Welcome...

to the September issue of Seaford Scene. As the government continues to gradually lift restrictions, life seems to be slowly returning back to more familiar times – I’d missed being able to eat out, and having enjoyed a pub meal with friends just recently, it’s made me appreciate much more, those little luxuries in life. Having said that, schools, colleges and universities will be reopening this month and what a totally different experience it will be for everyone – wishing pupils, students, teachers and staff members, all the very best. Talking of children, turn to page 92 to see the winners of the ‘Stop Littering’ poster competition, and for those of you who will be getting down to some studying, turn to page 116 for exercises on how to ease the strain of digital technology. It’s Art Wave 2020 this month and despite the COVID-19 restrictions, some venues will be open in Seaford, exhibiting work by local artists and makers – more details on the What’s On page 125 and throughout this issue. Seaford Photographic Society are back, snapping away on page 8 whilst Seaford Museum is hoping to open its doors again, see page 22. How about a spot of natural history? Turn to page 84 for news from Seaford Natural History Society, whilst Sussex Wildlife Trust ask us to take care at Seaford Head Nature Reserve, see page 4. With sports news from Seaford Cricket Club and Cycle Seahaven ,and Seaford’s new Young Mayor on page 120 there’s so much to enjoy in this issue. Have a great September!

Sussex Wildlife Trust Why Do We Graze Livestock on Seaford Head Nature Reserve? I’m sure many Seaford Scene readers know Seaford Head well and will have seen the cattle and sheep on the site at various times of the year. Have you ever wondered why they are there? Livestock select different plants, and even different parts of the plant, to nibble or browse. Over time, this creates a varied structure within the habitat. It is this that helps create the right conditions for a wide range of insects, birds, and plants to exist. Sussex Wildlife Trust has its own livestock and a dedicated grazing team to look after them. Conservation grazing is a really important tool for managing many habitats. Without this input, as well as the many hours put in by our volunteers and some mowing, the area would become completely overgrown with scrub and we would lose the diversity of habitat and wildlife. You can find more information about this on our website. Last winter we extended the grazing area above the Coastguard Cottages to include Hope Bottom and the ten cows did a great job. We choose breeds that are not only happy on rougher vegetation but are docile and well behaved. On the eastern side of the Reserve, adjacent to Seaford Head Golf Course, we graze sheep. They are kept in electrically fenced compartments which we move around giving them a few weeks on each patch. We never put fences across a Public Right of Way and try to avoid other paths or ‘desire lines’, but occasionally you may be asked to make a slight detour when walking there. Signs give information about the location of livestock.

Grazing and Dog Walkers – if you are a dog owner please read this!

The Nature Reserve is a popular dog walking area. If you are visiting with dogs please follow these guidelines: For the sake of the sheep please put your dogs on a lead when in the vicinity of the flock. When meeting sheep with your dog, it can be stressful for both yourself and the sheep. A sheep will often run and

4

if chased when pregnant can abort lambs. Sheep are easily brought down by a dog, which will often injure or even kill them. Coming across cows does not mean you have to put your dog on a lead. In fact if an inquisitive cow wants to take a look it is better for you if the dog is free to get out of the way. The cow is usually more interested in your dog than you. Dog poo spreads disease. There has been a nationwide increase in dog-faeces-related diseases affecting livestock. Animals can die, and unborn lambs and calves can be aborted. Please bag it and bin it.

• •

Not only is the Reserve a beautiful place, but it is home to many nationally rare and significant species of plants, birds and insects, recognised by the designation of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI, often referred to as a ‘triple SI’) giving it legal protection. It is also part of the Sussex Heritage Coast and the Beachy Head West Marine Conservation Zone. Whether you are visiting for a walk, to see wildlife, to exercise your dog, have a picnic, or just sit and enjoy the superb views, please look after this special place. I know many of you really value it, often picking up litter when you visit. This has helped to keep the Reserve tidy during a very busy time over the last few months – thank you very much. Seaford Music Society Seaford Music Society invites you to our next online concert. Please join us on Saturday 12th September at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased for this concert by logging on at seafordmusicsociety.com (try to do this in advance rather than at the last minute). Tickets are priced at £5 each with an option of a donation of £5 if you wish, any surplus income will be given to the charity ‘Help Musicians UK’ . Violinist Julia Bishop will join Sebastian Comberti on cello in an exciting programme of Baroque masterworks by Bach, Handel and Vivaldi and ending with a popular piece by Corelli. The concert lasts for approximately 1 hour. The best picture will be on a desktop computer, laptop or tablet, connecting to a television is even better. The link to the concert which uses Zoom will have been emailed to you when buying your ticket. If possible install the Zoom app beforehand, then you will be ready to go when the time comes. It is wise to allow about 20 minutes before the concert starts to log on so the beginning is not missed. You will be welcomed by our host Kate Comberti who will introduce the programme details for you. The Society welcomes all newcomers, friends and anyone abroad can access the concert, so let your relatives and neighbours know too. For anyone listening abroad however there will be a time difference. A good audience would be much appreciated by our musicians and any feedback after the concert is finished would be welcome too. Enjoy the concert and thank you in advance for watching. Sylvia Reeve

Seaford Photographic Society Our season was brought to a premature close back in March because of the Covid-19 situation so there has been a bit of a gap in these newsletters. However, we are now back and our Friday evening meetings will be starting again this month, albeit with a few changes. A number of our members felt uneasy about meeting up physically so, in line with what many other clubs are doing, we have made the decision to hold all our lectures and competitions online using Zoom, at least until Christmas. We will review the situation in November, with a view to getting back to physical meetings in early 2021 if the situation allows it.

We have managed to organise a few events for members during the summer months to encourage everyone to get out with their cameras. The first was an informal summer competition on the subject of ‘Lockdown’. We were pleased how many of our members joined in and there were 39 entries in total. After all the images had been received, they were displayed on our website and members voted for their favourites. We then got together for a catch-up on Zoom and Adrian, our Deputy Chairman, commented individually on all the entries and announced the winners. First place went to ‘Lockdown Escape’ by Peter Cavanagh. Julian Purkis took second place and Chris Dawson third. As I write this, in early August, the second summer competition is getting underway, with the theme of ‘Summer’.

8

We also had a meet-up and photo event in August where we all brought our cameras along and had a stroll around the South Hill and Hope Gap area. It was good to catch up with some friends from the club who we hadn’t seen for five months. Most people were going for close-up shots as there were lots of butterflies and other insects around. One of us, however, decided to bring the long lens to try and get some interesting shots of birds. Apparently, it seems that nearly all the birds disappear in August, apart from the odd pigeon and a few herring gulls! Oh well, it’s all part of the learning process and they did manage to get some butterfly pics from a distance, while everyone else was trying to get as close as possible with their macro lenses! And we did see the NHS Spitfire flypast. A lot has been going on behind the scenes as well during our enforced break. Those of you on Facebook might be interested to know that the club now has its very own page www.facebook.com/ seafordphotographicsociety. We will be showcasing some of our members’ work here, providing useful links and news on general photography matters, and even providing some photography hints and tips. Please follow or like the page and share with anyone who might be interested. Our website www.seafordps.org continues to be expanded and now features news updates, members’ galleries, competition photos and results, and lots of information about the club. If anyone is thinking about joining SPS send us a message via the Facebook page or website and we’ll send you an invite to one of our Zoom meetings. Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Rich in history – where town meets country at the Pells of Lewes

Sussex towns and villages are steeped in history and there is growing interest in researching the past by local history groups. This month (September) sees the publication of a fascinating book about a neighbourhood in Lewes called the Pells, near the River Ouse, where the famous outdoor swimming pool was built in 1860. The Pells of Lewes: pool, park, people, places, edited by Ruth Thomson and Sarah Bayliss, is a 160-page full-colour book published by Lewes History Group (LHG) in its series of street stories. The book has been written by 15 enthusiasts who researched their houses, local streets and landmarks, including a pub, a church and a school, and interviewed residents with vivid memories of times past. Some authors traced long-gone features in the landscape – from ancient burial mounds, sacred springs and medieval swanneries, to a paper mill and an iron works. The book describes how generous benefactors gave land over the centuries to the townspeople, creating a ‘pleasure ground’ or park to improve public health and welfare. The first was a local solicitor, John Rowe, who donated a water meadow in 1603. Centuries later, the Pells swimming pool was built there, paid for by public subscription and replacing two much older baths which had been used for washing as well as swimming. Today, the pool’s Grade II listed structure is the oldest, outdoor, freshwater public pool in continuous use in England. Between 1879 and 1883, a cattle market, which had moved from Lewes High Street, took place fortnightly in the Pells but was closed down after an outbreak

14

of foot and mouth disease. Then the land was laid out as streets, with building plots sold for housing and a school, eventually becoming known as the Pells neighbourhood. Before World War I, the lake, fed by natural springs, attracted large crowds to ‘Venetian fêtes’ or regattas, held by Lewes Rowing Club. In 1920, Wynne E. Baxter, the first mayor of Lewes, finally achieved a life-long ambition to buy the Pells Lake and a tree-lined walkway around it from the Marquess of Abergavenny’s estate. Baxter, from the Lewes printing family, who had become a lawyer and famous London coroner, donated the Pells land for public use just before he died, aged 76.

To mark the centenary of his gift, local residents had planned celebrations for June 2020, supported by Mayo, Wynne Baxter, the Sussex legal practice which still carries its founder’s name. The Covid-19 pandemic meant all the events were cancelled but, happily, Lewes History Group maintained its strong commitment to publish the book. A bunting project, with flags portraying the history and natural life of the Pells, continued through the lockdown and now has 180 flags, stitched by 70 women, to decorate the pool and streets in future. The flags feature in the book alongside photographs, maps, drawings and house plans found at The Keep (East Sussex Record Office) and the Sussex Archaeological Society. Editor Ruth Thomson said, ‘It is quite astonishing how rich the history of the Pells area has proved to be. Residents past and present, and Lewes collectors too, have been most generous with their photographs, illustrations, documents and postcards – many previously unpublished.’ The book will be available to order from 1st September from the LHG website, www.leweshistory. org.uk/pells-of-lewes/, price £12.50 plus postage. A talk about the history of the Pells will be hosted online on Monday 14th September at 7.30pm. Attendance is free but anyone interested will need to register at www.leweshistory.org.uk/meetings.

This month’s featured member, Alison Mcdonagh only joined last year but her stunning textiles have been an instant hit.

Collections 2020 SPOTLIGHT: Alison Mcdonagh

Alison grew up in Farnham, Surrey in a household where there was always a garment of some description under construction on the dining table. Her father machined with his engineer precision, her mother

taught her knitting and hand sewing and her sister always maintained that she could run up a dress in an evening, so instilled speed and confidence! By osmosis her lifelong interest in textiles was a given’ and a love of music was fostered by an older brother. Dissuaded from going to art school Alison studied a B.Ed degree course in music at Bath instead but painting, paper collage and textiles remained passionate hobbies. Later her husband suggested turning her passions into a business and, following a course at the Scottish College of Textiles, she bought a knitting machine and began a new adventure in fibre and colour. A successful designer knitwear business was established until her three boys were born. A move to the USA meant a return to education this time in the alternative sector, including some years as a home educator. A strong believer in lifelong education, Alison took a course in machine embroidery at West Dean College in 2014, opening up thrilling new possibilities to using the sewing machine as a drawing and painting tool. Combining paint, threads and stitch she started to create textured landscapes or vivid abstracts which were often thought of as paintings. On closer inspection the subtle textures are revealed as stitches created by hand and machine. Alison enjoys the challenge of making something out of nothing and uses her trips to Seaford charity shops to buy interesting fabrics which are cut up and reassembled. New fabric is made out of the pieces by dyeing, painting and embroidering them, mostly by machine but sometimes with added hand stitching to create one-off pieces that are transformed into unique bags, cushions, journal covers and clothing, ethically made, and a positive response to our growing concern about fashion being the second biggest polluter on the planet.

This September Seaford Art Club joins with Art Wave 2020 to welcome you to their annual exhibition which this year is supported by The View Restaurant at Seaford Head. For over 65 years Seaford Art Club has held an annual exhibition and this year, undeterred by COVID-19, the club didn’t want to fail to put on a show. Dialogue and friendship between members plays an important part in encouraging and developing work, and this virus has meant that club members like so many other clubs have not been able to meet in person for several months now. But despite COVID-19 the club will be showing a varied selection of work and cards for sale during Artwave 2020 at The View Restaurant at Seaford Head. Regular visitors to The View have been enjoying seeing a selection of artwork by Seaford Art Club for several years now. A cautious reopening Incoming Chairman Jane keel announced: ‘We are delighted to finally be able to say that we hope to be reopening the Museum on a limited basis towards the end of September. Please look at our Facebook page and our web site for opening dates, times and details as it is an ever moving situation.’

‘It has been a very long time and things will of course have to be slightly different with a strict social distancing policy and other necessary measures to keep everyone as safe as possible, but we are sure everyone will understand.

‘The Museum is so packed with artefacts and exhibits that we have had to devise a one-way route around the Museum to try to keep all our visitors and volunteers safe. Thankfully, we have had excellent support and advice from a specialist on how best to achieve this, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming visitors back to our Museum again!’ ‘One exhibit is having to be changed completely. The Edwardian village shop with its superb display of grocery packs and tins from over 100 years ago has had to be totally dismantled. Unfortunately, during the process of installing our new dehumidification system, we discovered quite substantial water damage, which had obviously accumulated over the years. The extent of the damage was such that we decided to use the fact that we weren’t open to completely revamp the shop. And all praise to our Heavy Gang maintenance volunteers who are doing a magnificent job! ‘It is likely that the Edwardian shop – complete with the very popular cash transport system – will be not be ready when we reopen but visitors will be able to observe “a museum at work”- not quite Open All Hours, but the shop will be there,” Jane continued. ‘When we reopen, the Museum will have to be run a little differently from before with lots of precautions and we will have additional volunteer stewards on hand to keep things running smoothly.’ If any reader feels that they would like to get involved with the Museum in any capacity, all volunteers will be most welcome. Please contact Seaford Museum via info@seafordmuseum.co.uk or leave a message on 01323 899222. Photos from top: The Heavy Gang remove and rebuild the shop; The General Store before the repairs. Generous Youth Counselling Project donors It is with great regret that we have to report the death of one of our co-founders, Clive Lacey, who did so much to spread awareness of what The Youth Counselling Project does to help troubled students at Seaford schools. Please turn to page 32 to read more about this remarkable man’s life. The magnificent efforts of Clive and his wife Rosalind, who led the local team of fund-raisers, have brought in £7,500 in 2019 and £3,500 so far this year, but of course the effect of coronavirus is to severely curtail opportunities like outdoor events. This means that we are more than ever before reliant on what the whole community can do to support this important charity, see below. Another big thank you must go to Martello Rotary Club which is currently supporting us, and we were

out in force on the last Sunday of July on the seafront together with RNLI personnel – including the crew of Newhaven lifeboat – which Martello Rotary is also supporting. If you didn’t see us it’s because the wind was blowing so strongly that we couldn’t erect our banner. The Youth Counselling Project owes an enormous debt of gratitude to major donors who have stepped up with grants now totalling £26,900 since the start of the Covid-19 crisis, our latest contributors being The Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust, £5,000, and The Hendy Foundation, £1,600. The Youth Counselling Project provides therapy for troubled students at local primary and secondary schools. It makes provision for 10 sessions of therapy by appropriately trained counsellors for each of 60 young people taking part from the town’s primary schools and from Seaford Head School. With each block of 10 sessions costing around £450, and Child Line and Young Minds both reporting a steep rise in stress in young people resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the money couldn’t have come at a better time. We’ll let you know when we are able to run events safely again, but in the meantime there are still ways to contribute. Visit the Project’s website at www.tycp.org. uk to see how you can donate via JustGiving, Amazon Smile and Lewes Lottery, or think of a way in which you could personally contribute, perhaps by running a Zoom coffee morning or a guideline-observing small garden party. Every little helps and will go towards supporting students who need therapy urgently. HAVE BEEN I have been OFFERED offered A a SETTLEMENT settlement AGREEMENT agreement AND I’m AREunsure UNSUREwhat WHATthis THISmeans MEANS? and Nobody would dispute that one of the sad repercussions of these last difficult months is the fact that a large number of people may find themselves being made redundant or being offered a settlement agreement. A settlement agreement is an agreement between you and your employer where you agree to give up your rights to bring any claim against your employer in exchange for a sum of compensation. In some settlement agreements the compensation sum can be quite high but in others the offer can be relatively modest. The first £30,000 payable as a compensatory payment under most settlement agreements will normally be free of tax and national insurance. A settlement agreement can cover situations where there is a potential redundancy, disciplinary, or where the relationship between you and your employer just isn’t working, but your employer wants the comfort of knowing that you will not bring a claim against them.

Will I have to pay Legal costs?

Can I tell anyone about the offer?

It is a requirement of any settlement agreement that you have to seek advice from an independent legal advisor. Your employer will usually contribute a sum of money towards your costs, normally between £250-£500 plus VAT. We would recommend that you speak to your solicitor straight away to see if there will be any additional charges on top of this.

Generally your employer will include a clause that will ask you to keep the existence and the terms of the agreement confidential. It is very common to see a clause requiring that you only discuss the agreement with your immediate family or legal advisor.

Once you have received the settlement agreement, you need to speak to your solicitor and consider whether you want to accept the offer. You can always reject the offer or see if you can persuade your employer to increase the offer. It is best to discuss this with your legal advisor so that you can get the best possible outcome.

It is essential that you are confident that you clearly understand all of the terms and the requirements under the agreement. There is a risk that you would have to pay back the settlement monies if you breach the agreement.

If you have any questions, have received a settlement agreement or would like any advice on settlement agreements, please do not hesitate to contact our litigation team on litigation@barwells.com or 01273 582271.

SEAFORD CRICKET CLUB CELEBRATE U14s FESTIVAL WEEK

Festival week is traditionally one of the most exciting weeks our Junior’s look forward to during the long summer break and families even arrange their holidays so that their children can take part. With Lockdown and COVID-19 set upon us this year, it was looking likely that this event would be cancelled. However, following the new government guidelines and then the go ahead announcement from the ECB at the beginning of July, our Club and Committee worked extremely hard to put in place all the necessary steps and were able to announce to our young aspiring

cricketers that their week would in fact go ahead! The week did not disappoint, glorious sun shining upon us on all four days with games being played at our home site The Salts Recreation ground and visits to Eastbourne and Brighton. Several new players have joined our growing squad this year and have all said how welcome they have been made to feel. They are enjoying the new friendships and friendly banter with existing team players. Seaford Cricket Club is all about developing cricketing skills, having fun and making lifelong friendships! Our final game and a successful win for Seaford being played on the hottest day of the year so far, ended with a celebratory fish and chip supper on the lawn, together with the sound of lively chatter and laughter reflecting on the weeks events. You can find more about us on our extensive website www.seafordcc.co.uk for all activities and news.

Clive Francis Lacey

4th July 1946 - 24th July 2020

One of Seaford’s most avid supporters, Clive Lacey, has died, leaving behind a legacy of public awareness of the charity which he cofounded to support the town’s young people. The Youth Counselling Project began as a result of a conversation four years ago with Judy Renihan of The House who was concerned about the number of school-age children needing therapy. She asked Clive and his wife Rosalind if they would be interested in starting up a charity to find counsellors. Julia Hancock and Mairin Colleary were persuaded to cofound The Youth Counselling Project, which now helps up to 70 students a year from Seaford schools. Clive’s role was to spread the word about the aims of TYCP, and to persuade them to bring in much needed cash to help pay for counselling services. Clive excelled in this role and it is largely down to him that support has been received from such sources as the two town Rotary clubs, the town council via Mayors’ charities and local people running events. Clive was a well-known and colourful figure, often on his electric tricycle, and it is a tribute to his stoicism that he had pedalled from their home in Edinburgh Road to Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club for lunch on the day before he died of a heart attack. Clive was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the age of 52 and had since had a leg amputated, as well as suffering other problems associated with his illness. But he never let it get him down and no matter how much pain he was in he was always kind and considerate. He was never seen without a welcoming smile on his face. He was born in the Medway town of Chatham. His mother had brought him up on her own and he spent weekends with his father. Aged 16, he got himself a job as a shipping clerk with Kimberly Clark in Aylesford then, to help fund a car, also became a cinema usher. He was

32

then recruited as a trainee manager and was Deputy Cinema Manager of Grenada’s Maidstone picture house when Rosalind met him in 1969. He was soon to be ticked off for his breezy informality, as a result of which Rosalind was slightly taken aback when she called him Clive only to have him insist, ‘It’s Mr Lacey.’ He quickly found an opportunity to apologise, however, and they were married in 1971, first living in Chatham and then moving to near Gillingham. For many years he was a lay preacher with the New Apostolic Church. He worked for Kimberly Clark, and Dun and Bradstreet for many years, concluding his career in 2010 as Managing Director of credit information company Graydon UK. When Ros retired two years later they decided they needed an adventure and set about finding a home by the sea. Their search all along the south coast from Deal to Bognor finally brought them to Seaford, where a cup of coffee outside a Broad Street café and friendly eye contact from strangers made them realise this was the place to be. They knew no one and, says Rosalind, used Seaford Scene as their bible, finding their first friends, Lindsay and Arwyn Thomas, through an advertisement for garden design. They joined Archway Choir, - ‘one of the best decisions we made,’ says Rosalind - and Clive gave business management support to Nick Mallinson at Seahaven FM. Then came The Youth Counselling Project. ‘He talked about it the whole time,’ says Rosalind. ‘What he liked about Seaford was that everyone’s got time for you. Everyone knew him on his electric trike. We had so many friends.’ Clive and Rosalind had taken leave of absence from TYCP at the beginning of January to go on a world cruise and managed 50 days of it, reaching the Marquesas before he became unwell. They flew home from Sydney in late February and his health deteriorated from that point. Clive was a talented artist, sketching his grandchildren – he adored his family – and painting in watercolours and acrylics. Most of all, says Ros, he was a promotor of the town’s benefits. Cremation took place at Woodvale, Brighton on 19th August, family flowers only with donations to The Youth Counselling Project. Clive also leaves daughters Simone and Kate, son Paul, and three grandchildren. Andrea Hargreaves Photo: Clive and Rosalind Lacey

Seaford Little Theatre It has been a long, long spring and summer for the actors, backstage crews and other theatre helpers at Seaford Little Theatre who would normally have been enjoying rehearsals, performances, workshops and plenty of social activities. Suddenly everything came to an abrupt halt! So as we begin to adjust to the ‘new normal,’ now is the time to look about us and take stock. When we all went into Lockdown back in March, Ladies in Lavender was well on its way with rehearsals swinging along and the set almost completed. The decision was quickly taken to make this our first production once theatre performances became possible again. But with severe restrictions placed on indoor gatherings that likelihood is not going to be possible for some time. Of course we shall let everyone know once the situation changes enough for us to contemplate presenting a play in the theatre once again, but for now we must be patient and consider

how best to use the considerable talents of our members. When any firm decisions have been taken we shall rush into print again. Meanwhile our imaginative and energetic treasurer Jon Terry set up a weekly Zoom quiz night for members and friends (you may have seen the notifications on Facebook) and also organised a weekly Zoom play reading. Members have taken turns to present the quizzes and steer the play readings, and a good time has been had by all. Importantly, these evenings have been a great way of keeping theatre friends in touch with each other. Despite these valiant efforts there remains a big hole in our hearts. We miss the buzz of the theatre. We miss our lovely, supportive Seaford audiences – and not just Seaford. Some people travel long distances to watch our efforts! As soon as we possibly can we shall be back in our beautiful little theatre, eager to entertain you all again. Keep well, keep safe and never forget that the town has a great asset in our theatre. We must not lose it. Sue Williams

cycle seahaven It’s been a tough few months for a lot of people and we have seen many changes due to the coronavirus. Bike shops, both local and national have seen sales rocket, resulting in empty shops and waiting lists for bikes, parts and servicing. It has been great to see so many more people out on their bikes, either just enjoying the sunshine and exercising, or using them to commute to work and avoid public transport. It would be great if people can keep this up and to encourage this, the government’s recent announcement to provide a £50 voucher towards repairs (not servicing), was greatly received, causing their website to crash within 5 minutes. With only 50,000 vouchers being issued, competition for these is great. The good news is, with Cycle Seahaven, no voucher is needed. Our ever popular Dr Bike, along with our organised club rides, were put on hold due to Covid-19 but I am pleased to announce we are back!

With a new venue and safety measures in place to comply with Covid-19 regulations, our first Seaford Dr Bike session was a roaring success. You can now find us on the first Saturday of the month at The Salts recreation ground, adjacent to the café. Saturday 1st August saw our first session to be held here. Our amazing volunteers helped get 25 bikes up and running smoothly, and raised £142 for our nominated charity, Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group. Our service is FREE! All we ask for is a donation to our charity, which has (like many charities) suffered through the pandemic. We are able to provide some basic parts (brake and gear cables, inner tubes, though not all sizes) and we just ask for the trade cost of these to be covered, but ALL the money is donated to the charity. You don’t need to be a member to come along to our Dr Bike sessions but why not join? With membership starting from just £7 a year, you can enjoy riding and socialising with a great bunch of people, whether you like road or off-road riding. There are rides for all ages and abilities. In addition, you can enjoy discounts as some local businesses, including Mr Cycles and Positive Touch Therapy to name just a couple. More of our benefits can be found, along with our calendar detailing rides and events, including cancellations at www.cycleseahaven.org.uk. Our Dr Bike Sessions usually run from March to October each year – the first Saturday of the month in Seaford and third Saturday of the month in Peacehaven at The Big Park – both from 10am to 12.15pm but can be dependent on the weather so please do check our website calendar for any updates.

seaford U3A News ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close-bosomed friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run’ ‘To Autumn’ by John Keats, 1795 – 1821 This poem, of which this is only a part, was one discussed two years ago in a U3A group named ‘Delight in Words’. Corny it may be may be but after all these centuries it remains one of the best-known and bestloved poems about autumn, the season fast approaching. The photograph this month (right) shows early autumn in Friston Forest, near Seaford. The group was great fun and a good opportunity to get to know fellow members better which of course was one of the purposes of the activity. It was also an entertaining introduction to poems and poets which several of the members did not know, but there was no uncomfortable pretence of being intellectuals! Part of the U3A philosophy is to educate gently whilst remembering that learning can be fun.

The provisional Group Prospectus for members is now available with a large selection of subjects ranging from Bridge and Canasta, through Arts and Crafts, Cookery, Current Affairs, Drama, Languages and Literature, to Music, Science and Meditation. The problem now is – can the courses can be run with social distancing? With some careful thought and use of larger premises it is to be hoped that the programme can operate as soon as circumstances allow. In previous years many groups have taken place in members’ houses but a new process of using hired rooms might be the way forward. This is going to have to be a case of ‘watch this space’ as it might be somewhat experimental. It is particularly important to respect the CoviD-19 rules as the age groups from which most members come are vulnerable. The U3A is in fact ready to welcome anyone who has retired whether they be aged 20+ or 80+, but the majority of members are of conventional retiring age. Many members are quite understandably hesitant to be too adventurous about going out, and a reassurance will need to be given for them to participate in U3A activities. It is hoped that people who have previously been members have renewed their membership, which fell due at the beginning of August. It is only £10 per member and the organisation needs your support to be able to offer anything. New members are of course always welcome. For more information about Seaford U3A and also about its linked organisations, Sussex U3A Network (SUN) and SE U3A Region see the website www. u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack.

The Power of Music Have you ever wished you could play a musical instrument? Since Lockdown, many of us have been reevaluating our priorities, and discovering different ways to bring joy and meaning to our lives. Music has always been known to help lift our spirits, and learning to play an instrument can be a hugely enriching experience which brings significant benefits, both mentally and physically. As a violinist, I have been fascinated by a certain scientific experiment, which analysed brain scans of violinists whilst playing. These scans showed that every single area of the brain was actively involved in playing the violin. In my experience, I find this total involvement of the brain gives me a break from worries, and calms my mind. There are so many fantastic benefits which come from learning a musical instrument – too many to list, so why not realise your ambition today, and start having lessons! Maeve Jenkinson (Musical Director of the Corelli Ensemble) currently has a few vacancies for new pupils. She is a highly qualified and experienced violin teacher and performer, and teaches both adults and children, of all levels. She is DBS checked. During Lockdown, one-to-one lessons continued successfully over the internet. This remains a viable option for those who need to take extra care. If you are interested in having violin lessons, please visit my website where you can find more information about me, and use the contact form: maevejenkinsonviolin.weebly.com 01323 899238 To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

SEAFORD and DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY www.seafordhorti.com

A view from the Potting Shed

Traditionally farmers harvested in September, but modern farming sees the grain being gathered in as early as July, while September in Sussex normally features ploughing matches. There are in fact ploughing matches all over the country throughout the autumn, as well as competitions abroad, where participants display the art and skill of ploughing. Some competitors use horses to pull the plough, keeping old skills alive. Unfortunately numerous events will be cancelled this year due to coronavirus. ic o op f

Spring Bulbs

Spring bulbs give a welcome burst of colour after the winter gloom, and planting should begin now, except tulips, which are best left until October to avoid disease. Bear in mind that bulbs can be untidy for several weeks after flowering, so choose a site where emerging growth on other plants will hide the sprawl. Growing in pots avoids this problem – summer bedding containers can be cleared and revitalised with some fresh compost and bone meal before planting up with bulbs. Miniature daffs and smaller tulips are ideal for patio containers, also muscari, try layering different varieties with some crocus and a few winter flowering pansies at the top for a lovely winter into spring display. For even earlier indoor displays you can buy specially prepared hyacinth bulbs and plant this month for scent-filled rooms at Christmas. A pot of gorgeous blue hyacinth also makes a lovely Christmas gift. Remember that drainage is essential for bulbs, so cover drainage holes in containers with crocks or gravel, and raise pots off the ground using pot feet or bits of paving slab. Keep pots sheltered, and near the house if a severe frost is forecast.

September, the herald of autumn, a golden month of ripening apples and harvest. The summer might be over but a warm September day is a delight, with just that hint of chill early and late, and still plenty to do in the garden.

JOBS TO DO IN sept

3 It’s the ideal time for lawn jobs – laying, renovating and repairing. 3 Lift, divide and replant early spring flowering perennials while there’s still some warmth in the soil e.g. hardy geraniums, primulas, dicentra (bleeding heart) and lily of the valley. 3 Plant out biennials including wallflowers, sweet williams and foxgloves. 3 Plant overwintering onion sets, spring greens and young strawberry plants. 3 Keep camellias and rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well.

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD Once again the committee and I have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel all our events for the remainder of the year. The AGM was programmed for November, however, we have provisionally rearranged this for our meeting on 28th January 2021, at St Leonard’s Church Hall, Seaford. We have a speaker booked for the evening, so the AGM will follow. It should be a fairly short AGM as there won’t be any prize giving taking place. This is of course all dependant on the current COVID-19 situation. Please keep an eye on Seaford Scene, Facebook and our website for further updates. Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all as soon as we can. Sara (Chairman).

What’s that adage? There’s no such thing as a weed, it’s just a plant in the wrong place. Well, check out our garden at the Crouch where Lockdown restrictions have resulted in some wonderful juxtapositions. Indeed, so much so that our volunteers have adopted nature’s mood by planting bright dahlias kindly donated by Wynne’s Garden Centre in the middle of a burgeoning crop of courgettes and, er, some self-seeded squashes looking a lot like pumpkins. Of course, it so happens that the flowers will benefit from the veg’s watering system. And we related last month how tomatoes had self-seeded in the poly tunnel – a month later and its floor had been colonised by a single butternut squash plant. Allison explained: ‘During Lockdown when we were weeding, tomatoes and pumpkins had self-seeded around the garden so we decided not to waste them but to replant them in beds which benefit from the irrigation system. We don’t know if they are pumpkins but the butternut squash in the poly-tunnel has grown like an absolute triffid.’ On a brilliantly sunny day in early August the raised bed nearest the classroom was also host to the purplishblack flowers of nicandra which James said grows like a weed and the flower beds had an artless look of wildness which stopped the right side of untidiness, with Verbena bonariensis casting a bright mauve veil across the dry

50

garden while the burnt orange of crocosmia shone against a hugely spired tree echium and white roses. In the Mediterranean garden myrtle, melianthus and mimosa were making a show along with Verbascum chaxii. Also doing well was the lavender. Allison suggested that it was best picked while still flowering if you want to use it for lavender bags. ‘I looked it up on Google and found that the best way to preserve it is pick it while it still has some flowers on, to bunch it up and then dry it in a dark, wellventilated place. Then spray it with hairspray.’ Lastly, it’s thanks again, this time to the kind person who gave us some extra large plant labels. Ana said: “They are big enough for us to inscribe the plant name and what’s it’s good for.’ Seaford Community Garden is currently open on Wednesdays and, during the produce season, Saturdays from 10am until midday. See you there! The apples and pears are looking amazing. The Garden Team Photos from top: Verbena bonariensis adds grace wherever it is placed; The living roof is flourishing thanks to attention from Abdul and other volunteers; Pears are doing very well; Veronica with a glorious dahlia amongst the courgettes; All this from one self-seeded butternut squash plant!; Allison bunches some lavender prior to drying it; This squash may ripen into a pumpkin; A courgette flower is a wondrous thing.

Meet some familiar faces in September If you think you are seeing double when you wander through Newhaven in September, don’t worry.

Familiar Faces Around Newhaven, an exhibition of portraits of some local personalities, will be adorning shop windows, and other venues, as part of this year’s Artwave. The portraits, by local photographer Hilary Musk, will be among the celebrations to mark the 900th anniversary of St Michael’s Church. There will be an accompanying family trail leaflet and quiz, which can

Many of the events planned by St Michael’s had to be postponed due to Covid-19, but Familiar Faces is able to go ahead and can be seen in the town from 5th to 22nd September 2. There will be an opening ceremony by the Mayor, Cllr Graham Amy at 10.30 am outside the library on 5th September, with Town Crier Jason Ede delivering a specially composed ‘shout’ for the occasion. Most of the people photographed will also be there, including community artist Carol Havard, who will be in situ to paint local people’s portraits. A book celebrating the history of St Michael’s and the town is currently on sale at various shops – including the Coffee House, Newhaven Pharmacy, and the second-hand bookshop. Further copies will be on sale at the opening ceremony. Proceeds from sales will go to St Michael’s Church and Newhaven Foodbank. The book – St Michael’s 900 Years – includes photographs and interviews with many of those featured in the exhibition. Also going ahead during the anniversary year is an open art exhibition to be held at St Michael’s Church and hall in November. Artists and craftspeople are invited to participate and should contact carolebuchan20@gmail.com or hilaryamusk@gmail.com for further information.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Yellow Meadow Ants

South Downs Skyscrapers

If you’re feeling boxed-in by buildings and overwhelmed by architecture, I’ve found the perfect escape route. Head up onto the South Downs and let the developed world be stripped away with every step.Yet here, in this ancient landscape, towering above the thyme and trefoils in the turf, you’ll find some of the most impressive buildings in Sussex. Ant hills are mini miracles of design and construction, the visible tip of the ant’s underground empire. Soil is mined and carried, grain by grain, to the surface to construct this metropolis of mounds, some of which can be centuries old. Every ant hill represents a separate colony of Yellow Meadow Ants – respected as the finest architects amongst Britain’s 42 ant species. Ant hills are high-rise heat-traps built to harvest the sun’s warmth. This soil solarium houses a series of chambers; the colony’s nursery. Here, worker ants tenderly tend to eggs, pupae and larvae – moving them around within the ant hill to keep them always on the sunny side. With a strong division of labour, each colony is a ‘superorganism’, made of thousands of hard-working individuals serving a common cause – their colony and queen. But life is far from peaceful. Every ant hill is a miniature kingdom at war with its neighbouring ant hills. Epic battles are fought daily on these downs, and every summer squadrons of winged ants take to the skies in an attempt to establish new colonies. It’s a perilous mission certain death awaits them if they land in occupied territory.

Down under the ant hill, other ants work on the aphid farm. Root-feeding aphids are herded and ‘milked’ for their honeydew – a hi-energy drink which helps fuel the colony. Ants also obtain a similar sugary syrup from the caterpillars of Chalk Hill Blue butterflies. When these caterpillars are ready to pupate, they are carried underground and adopted by the ant colony. Upon emergence, the subterranean homesick blue butterflies scramble back to the surface and escape to the summer skies. Ant hills don’t just benefit ants; their angles and aspects create a unique micro-habitat on chalk downland. Their sun-baked slopes are great for basking butterflies, grasshoppers and lizards, and their soft, sifted soil is loved by mosses, grasses and flowers. This softness is also their vulnerability. Every ant lives in fear of the great winged terror from the sky – the green woodpecker. Its brutal bill and sticky harpoon tongue can cause carnage in a colony. Winged monsters, kingdoms at war – it’s a veritable Game of Thrones out there on the South Downs in September. Sussex Wildlife Trust is an independent charity caring for wildlife and habitats throughout Sussex. Founded in 1961, we have worked with local people for over half a century to make Sussex richer in wildlife. www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk Photos from top: Yellow Meadow Ant by Paul Richards©, Chalk Hill Blue male by Bob Eade©, Green Woodpecker by Derek Middleton©.

Seaford Rotary

Seaford Rotary Boot Fair Returns

The Sunday morning dawned with a warm blue sky accompanied by the occasional white cloud and a gentle breeze, ideal weather for the return of the Seaford Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair after a long absence. Government Regulations for the Covid 19 pandemic had resulted in four fairs earlier this year being cancelled. Therefore, there was a degree of anticipation for this first fair of the year. Discussions had taken place with Seaford Town Council and to manage the risk due to the contagion, a series of new conditions had been agreed. Although the last two fairs of 2019 had seen over 100 stalls on the Martello Field, to maintain social distancing, a reduced number of stalls was permitted with no more than two persons manning each stall. Well before the gates were due to open at 7.30am a queue had developed on the approaches to the entrance to Martello Fields, and so to avoid traffic jams, the gates were opened early for the stall holders. After the rush, 44 stallholders set up in the marked areas. There were stalls offering plants, homemade conserves, cards, clothes, jigsaws and other children’s toys, tools, jewellery and other collectables. The Seaford Rotary stall had a large variety of goods on offer, and in particular a large number of tennis balls, ideal for our canine friends to chase. Martello Rotary set up opposite the Seaford Rotary stall and had their 2021 Seaford Community calendar for sale. Items for sale on other stalls included a junior drum set, guitar, and amplifier – one household would be quieter, and others noisier when sold. Other unusual items included a collection of bowls woods, a brass statue of an Indian goddess about 600mm tall, a portable air conditioning unit – very useful in the current warm spell. There was even the opportunity to sign up for welding lessons! Entry to the Martello West Field by members of the public keen to investigate the wares on offer was from the south-west access point to the field (adjacent to

74

Martello Tower), and they were required to follow the ‘one-way’ system of arrows marked on the field to guide them around the stalls before exiting by the pedestrian gate at the north-west of the Martello Field. The normal entry/exit point for pedestrians on the east side of the field was closed. In reality, not all the public wished to leave by the designated exit particularly as the car park was in the East Field, and several were seen scrambling up the bank to the promenade to leave the fair. A limit of no more than 150 members of the public were permitted on the field at any one time, and thus at times there was a queue of hopeful bargain hunters waiting at the designated entrance to the field. Hand sanitising units were positioned around the site with signage encouraging their use by the public. Two further Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs are planned for 6th and 27th September. Seaford Rotary Club hopes to see you there.

Lifetime Honorary Member: Pippa Logan Pippa Logan has become a Lifetime Honorary member of Seaford Rotary Club for her work in organising the catering at the Bluebell Walk, Arlington for the Club. She becomes the first Lifetime Honorary member of the Club. Normally the President of the Club invites one or two Seaford citizens to become an honorary member for 12 months, and occasionally this has been extended to a second year. It was agreed however that due to the enormous contribution to the Club given by Pippa since 2013 at the Bluebell Walk that a greater

degree of recognition was required, given that until the pandemic struck, this year was planned to be her last organising the Bluebell Walk refreshments. The award was announced at the Presidential handover meeting on 1st July. Seaford Rotary has been managing the Bluebell Walk at Arlington including provision of refreshments on two days each year since 2013. Each year the service Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. All rights are reserved over the content and design of Seaford Scene unless agreed otherwise. to provide the refreshments, including catering for all dietary needs such as a vegan menu, gets more professional and the standards higher. It is a juggling act catering for the visitors, the numbers being entirely dependent on the state of the bluebells, and the weather. The high standard of refreshments is due in no small part to the fabulous cakes the Rotary wives make, not to mention Pippa’s pre-bluebell baking sessions, filling her freezer and her neighbours’ freezers with sponges, cakes, soup and of course the scones and rocks cakes that are made fresh at dawn each morning. Our food is always complimented by the farmer as being ‘the best’. Our kitchen teams work hard to provide great food for the visitors. Pippa said ‘I am looking forward to running the 2021 Bluebell Walk as it is the farmer’s 50th celebration.’

Rotary Club of Seaford welcomes new members. For more information contact us on http://www.seafordrotary.org.uk/contact.php. Photos: Seaford Rotary August Boot Fair, Pippa Logan with her award certificate.

One thing that Covid-19 has shown is how much we all depend on opportunities to meet with other people and be given the chance to talk and be entertained by enthusiastic individuals presenting their specialist subject. Most talks revolve around collections of stamps, post cards or items of postal history throughout the world, whilst some meetings are based on member’s other interests so that model trains and sewing machines have appeared at these meetings. It is important to know that having a collection of stamps or postcards is not required, just the wish to meet new people and have a healthy interest in a wide range of subjects. Why not call in and see us once the meetings recommence? Further information can be obtained from the club secretary David Manthorpe on 01323 492433, email: david.manthorpe10@gmail.com (or watch the monthly activities that appear at the end of this magazine).

Seaford Natural History Society During the summer months the main activities of the Society are guided walks and recording the wonderful wildlife of the area. These came to a complete halt with the onset of the Covid-19 lockdown! At the time of writing, restrictions are beginning to ease so there is a chance that some of the planned walks may take place before the end of the season. With recording, the situation is more encouraging, as members can observe singly or in pairs. For example, butterfly surveying on Seaford Head and botanical observations are taking place. Many readers will have fond memories of spending time as children on the seashore, looking for crabs and other creatures in rock-pools and under stones. It isn’t just children who can enjoy this, and with several areas of good rocky shore near to Seaford there is plenty to see. Rocky shores can be accessed from Hope Gap, Cuckmere Haven or Birling Gap. Further afield, the Pound at Eastbourne (by the Holywell Café) is great at very low tide when the reef is exposed. The shoreline in these areas is a wave-cut chalk platform. There are deep channels and rock pools with loose rocks in them. Apart from the very colourful sea anemones, most of the living creatures are to be found under rocks. Turn them over and you will often find small fish, crabs, prawns and various molluscs. Look out for:

Snakelocks Anemone

There are two types of sea anemone commonly found on our shores, the Beadlet (which is red or green) and this, the larger Snakelocks, which has very long tentacles. You can find large numbers of these at Hope Gap in the channels and rock pools.

Chitons

These are like Limpets but they are oval in shape and have a series of plates in their shells.

Sea Slugs

You have to look carefully for these molluscs as they are usually quite small and will contract when disturbed. However, if you can put one into a pot and let it open up, they can be amazing. Many of them have brightly-coloured ‘tentacles’ along their backs. If you are going rock-pooling, remember to check the tide times first – the best time to start is about an hour before low tide, and keep going until the tide has turned. Be careful on the rocks as they are often slippery, especially the ones with bright green algae on them. You need to wear wellingtons or waterproof sandals in order to get into the water. PLEASE PUT EVERYTHING, ANIMALS AND STONES, CAREFULLY BACK WHERE YOU FOUND THEM.

Who’s Who In Seaford?

Jeremy Sales, Chairperson of Seaford Art Club Jeremy was born in Sussex and has lived in Seaford for nine years. He has been Chairperson of Seaford Art Club since 2014. Jeremy was educated in London, Surrey and Reigate School of Art, and worked as the Design Director for an international publishing and exhibition company, and also ran his own creative design business. Jeremy and his wife love walking on the Downs and they decided after looking all over Sussex that Seaford would be the place to retire to. Jeremy enjoys painting, drawing with charcoal, contemporary art history, walking and cooking. Seaford Art Club, founded in 1954, remains a friendly and social group of amateur and established artists. As Chairperson, he enjoys encouraging members to try something outside their comfort zone. COVID-19 has unfortunately put a temporary stop to any normal club activities. With the wonderful weather the committee has been able to meet outside and plan how to go forward. As a result the club is holding its annual exhibition as part of the Artwave Festival this September at The View.

TOP TIPS – no. 3 Redecorating walls and ceilings with emulsion…

… If you are painting the ceiling and walls in different colours – white ceiling and coloured walls. Paint the ceiling first, overlapping the walls by around 10mm. Cut back with the wall colour to give a straight edge – it’s easier to get a straight line on the top of the wall than it is to cut in the ceiling edge. You should only cut in once.

If we had to fight them on the beaches

Our region is famous for historical invasions which are also tourist and re-enactor attractions (photo below). Thus the road signs to Hastings announce that you are in 1066 country, the year of the Norman invasion. Historians keenly debate if the Roman invasion in 43AD came via Sussex, e.g. Fishbourne, rather than Kent. Seaford’s Martello Tower and Fort Newhaven date from nineteenth century invasions that never happened – and are visitor attractions nevertheless. Eighty years ago this month, we were due for another invasion which is not on local road signs. Operation Sealion (or just S Day) was penciled in for the 21st September by the evening of which Bishopstone and Seaford were to be occupied by the Ninth Army sailing across the Channel from Le Havre. The village of Tide Mills was already evacuated, for good. At nearby Bishopstone, the new Art Deco station had brick pillboxes added on the roof, making it look Art Guerra (photo right). The forlorn hut in Newlands Field is a memorial to Sea Flame which inspired public confidence (photo left). Even makers’ marks were blanked out on cartridge cases for security (photo top). Silent memorials to Sealion survive in Seaford too. The most durable are the anti-tank concrete cylinders,

88

like the dented one lying discarded on its side at the Buckle Car Park (photo below). A line of cylinders still guards the station car park, while others have been painted into seafront garden walls. More ominous is the occasional beach mine, like this inert one found in 2011 (photo below with size 10 welly for scale). Visitors to

Cuckmere Haven can view more obstacles to delay invaders. One concrete ‘tooth’ with contemporary graffiti exposed by the tide is inscribed upside down, as if meant to be read from above (photo right). Unlike earlier invasions, Sealion was expected to come by air as well as by sea. A balloon invasion was mooted when the Martello was built. This time, the threat was piston-powered, and an epic air engagement climaxed in the sky that summer as people below endeavoured to go about their work in towns and fields. Amazingly, a ’40s piece of plastic debris from one of our aeroplanes, brought up by Storm Jorge on the beach in March, still preserves its Air Ministry logo (photo left). Thanks in part to a strategic error, Sealion was postponed on S -4 day, although remained on the backburner for some time after. There are still stories to be told of those days, like what did the secret resistance at Bishopstone get up to in Badger 1? Let’s safely enjoy dramatized history, but especially if some of it never happened in the end. Ed and Biddy Jarzembowski

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford A new Inner Wheel year has started with joint Presidents at the helm. Despite the present restrictions on our activities we look forward to a year of friendship ,fun and service. Here is a little bit about our Presidents. Janis Livingstone, Co-President of the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford for 2020-2021 has been a member of Seaford Inner Wheel for four years having moved here five years, ago from Hampshire. For the past two years Janis has enjoyed being the club’s Social Organizer and a keen member of Crafty Ladies, a group of industrious knitters and sewers within the club. She married Clive, a civil engineer, in 1971. They have a son and two daughters. When Ann Reed accepted the invitation, in 2019, to be Co-President with Janis, she was not aware she would also have the privilege to being Mayoress of Seaford following the appointment of her husband Rodney as Mayor. Ann is delighted to be appointed Co-President and looks forward to working closely with Janis and the members of Inner Wheel. Ann, originally from Cornwall, has settled in Seaford after living in Birmingham and Bangladesh. Ann joined Inner Wheel shortly after arriving in Seaford and has enjoyed the friendship of the members and varied activities. Both will get together to decide on their special charity for the year, and we hope that Covid 19 will not prevent the Club from its usual support of local charities. Stop Littering Poster Competition Seaford Town Council and Plastic Free Seaford announce the winners and runners up to the ‘Stop Littering’ poster competition. Plastic Free Seaford and Seaford Town Council asked students from local primary schools to design posters to encourage members of the public to stop littering. A huge total of 65 fantastic entries were received and the winners and runners up were chosen (with difficulty) by the Mayor of Seaford and Plastic Free Seaford Lead, Claire Sumners.

A spokesperson from the Town Council has said: ‘The Town Council fully supports the poster initiative and is grateful to all those who took the time to so creatively highlight and encourage the public to stop littering. Thank you to Plastic Free Seaford for leading the competition.’ The three winners will have their poster printed and

used on the litter bins and at various locations along Seaford Promenade and the runners-up, due to such high-quality entries, will have paper copies of their posters added to local noticeboards. Plastic Free Seaford has said: ‘We are thrilled with the entries from the budding artists at each school. We ran this competition as a way to create Active Citizens with the young people in Seaford. Motivating young people to engage in environmental issues is key to motivating their behaviours as they grow older. These posters show they have an understanding and a voice to challenge bad behaviour – well done to all entrants!’

Now that schools have broken up for the Summer Holidays, Plastic Free Seaford has been unable to get in touch with the winners – if anyone recognises their poster entry, well done and we hope that you feel very happy and proud! Please contact Plastic Free Seaford via Facebook in September so that they can arrange an official photo opportunity if restrictions allow. A huge thank you to all the teaching staff for their support. The work carried out with schools is very important in supporting our younger community to become engaged in the need to keep our planet alive despite plastic pollution and climate change.

Winning entries from top: ‘E’ from Seaford Primary School, ‘C’ from Annecy Catholic Primary School, ‘R’ from Seaford Dave Geering 07971 072115 Primary School, ‘E’ from Cradle Hill Community Primary geeringelectrical@gmail.com School, ‘F’ from Cradle Hill Community, ‘L’ from Annecy Catholic Primary School Primary School. Seafriends

Bringing people together Ever felt like you have no one to chat to about your day, reminisce or share stories with? You’re not alone, nine million adults a day report feeling lonely or socially isolated, and not just our older generation. SeaFriends was formed by members of local groups with a shared interest in creating an environment in Seaford where no one feels lonely, to support people to make friends and re-engage with our community. SeaFriends were ready to launch just as COVID-19 forced clubs and activities in Seaford to close. So we changed tack, partnering with Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team (SVET), and we now offer a telephone befriending service. Listening Ear reaches out to those who are alone, for regular friendly chats. In addition we’re also making calls to all of SVET’s service users, checking they’re well, have all they need and offering them regular calls from one of our trained volunteers. Feeling lonely and socially isolated is proven to be detrimental to health. Something as simple as having someone to share your stories with can have an amazing effect on your wellbeing; we are, after all, social beings. All this can’t be done without our fantastic volunteers. Seaford has risen to the challenge of COVID-19, bringing the community together through volunteering. Our volunteers are matched with their new friend based on shared interests, and they decide how much or little time to commit. Our volunteers are trained and supported with monthly follow-up calls and virtual

chores and more Cleaning, ironing, errands, admin, etc. Reliable and friendly team, fully insured Locally recommended

coffee mornings where they meet other volunteers and socialise. Coordinators are always available to discuss any concerns or just for a chat. We’re all making new friends and working together to brighten peoples’ lives. Funded by the National Lottery until November, we’re working hard to continue this valuable service long term and have exciting plans for groups and activities to bring the generations together in Seaford. We aim to create safe supported spaces to get together and enjoy each other’s company, and are planning socially distanced coffee mornings once the circumstances allow. One of the hardest things to do is cross the threshold into a new place or group on your own, so we will be there, offering a buddy service where you can go along with someone you’ve already met and they’ll help you settle in. It really has been an amazing experience talking to so many interesting and different people, getting to know them and matching them with new friends. One short phone call can make a world of difference and for some it is the only contact they will have all week. If you’d like to join our volunteer team or receive regular calls contact us, we’d be happy to hear from you. Tel: 01323 914689, email: hello@seafriends.org.uk.

Havens Community Car scheme

Havens Community Car scheme is a new volunteer driver charity based in Newhaven which helps coastal residents between Saltdean and Seaford with journeys vital to day-to-day living. The coronavirus pandemic halted their planned launch in April this year, but after undertaking health and safety reviews and conforming to all government advice, they have ‘soft launched’ for emergency cases with a revised opening date of September 2020 to the general public. Re-trained drivers have already assisted elderly residents with journeys to dentist, hospital and doctors’ appointments, with most passengers not having left their houses for four months due to shielding. One member praised the efforts of her volunteer driver: ‘I don’t think I would have been able to attend my appointment this week without my Havens Community Car driver’ she revealed. ‘My driver stayed with me during my appointment and drove me home afterwards. She was so kind when I was frightened of both the treatment and going out for the first time. I’m a pensioner on a small fixed income and would have struggled with the £38 private journey fare.” The scheme is free to join, with members only paying

government approved mileage expenses. One of this week’s journeys took everyone at the charity by surprise when they were asked to urgently transport a volunteer from a cat shelter to rescue feral kittens who had become trapped in a rural location. Volunteer Driver and cat lover Paula was delighted to undertake the journey, helping transfer the tiny felines to foster carers who will rehabilitate them for rehoming. The scheme expects a high volume of new members needing support when they officially launch in September and are still recruiting Volunteer Drivers who can donate as little as two hours per week to help other people in their communities. Why Attention to Good Nutrition is Important for People with Dementia Neil Joyce, of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre in Seaford, talks about nutrition for people with dementia. Good nutrition is vital for the health, however maintaining a healthy weight can be a challenge for people with dementia. Difficulties eating and drinking are noticeable as dementia progresses, and unwanted weight loss is a common problem.

Weight loss

It is helpful to be aware of changes that can occur as dementia progresses, such as difficulties with using cutlery, recognising food or taste changes. These changes can result in a person eating and drinking less. However, losing weight is not an inevitable part of dementia. With time, effort and knowledge of the person, food and calorie intake can be managed. Poor nutritional intake and lack of fluids can contribute to the development and severity of delirium – sometimes referred to as ‘acute confusional state’. People with dementia are at a greater risk of developing delirium.

Preferences

As dementia progresses a person’s likes and dislikes for food may change. These can be quite dramatic. Asking a person with dementia about the food they like to eat is vital to ensure we provide options at mealtimes that they enjoy. We find that families can be a valuable source of information if the person with dementia is struggling to communicate their preferences. It’s also a good idea to show the person the choices that are available.

Smell and Taste

A person with dementia may start to lose their sense of smell, and this will have a direct effect on taste and impact appetite. We ensure food is flavoursome and tasty. The aroma can also help to promote appetite

106

and enhance connection to mealtimes. Research by the Design Council & Department of Health examines the impact of using aroma to help stimulate appetite for people with dementia. Visit designcouncil.org.uk and go to Ode case study

Excessive weight gain

Over time, dementia will affect a person’s ability to prepare food. Shopping and meal planning may be confusing. The person may find it easier to buy and eat snack or convenience foods rather than a balanced meal. A person may become less active too. Mobility problems may restrict walking, or they may feel anxious about going out alone. Subsequently they may eat more food than they need. It is important to identify what the causes are and support the person appropriately with advice from a dietician. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite dementia care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment. Follow us on Facebook for more dementia care advice.

Martello Rotary Seaford

New world, new ways of working

Covid-19, Lockdown and self-isolation have all seemed a bit insurmountable on occasions, but by thinking a little differently you can still make a big difference to the society that you live in and support. One of our biggest challenges is how do we raise enough money to support the many causes, both environmental and personal that need that extra bit of cash or help that can make a fundamental difference to people’s lives. Rotary is all about serving others before self. An old-fashioned phrase, not one you hear much nowadays, but you would be surprised at how many people want to support others. This is especially the case with causes such a Lifeboats, British Heart Foundation and the WOLO Foundation (helping families effected by cancer) to name just a few of the Charities that we support. This was proven when we organised a virtual race ‘Run for Rotary’. Distance to race could be chosen from several options, both running and walking. The idea was that individuals signing up for the race would initially pay a small subscription and then try to encourage contributions from friends and family for completing the race. It was down to the individual when they completed the run/walk, many using smart technology to track the occasion. For us this was a trial run (forgive the pun) as we had no idea how successful it would be. In the past we have organised and marshalled half marathons and 10k races, and they have been successful in both numbers turning out and contributions received for our charities. So, the idea of a virtual run was totally new to us. Luckily, we have Tony Humphreys in our team, who in a past life managed development of large-scale IT platforms and associated tools, and he pulled it all together for us. The result was that 55 people signed up to race, the majority completing their set distance and profits from the event have exceeded previously held ‘live’ races. We will definitely be staying in the ‘virtual’ world for the foreseeable future and will probably combine this with live events as soon as Covid allows.

108

Focus on the environment

Martello Rotary will be partnering with the Seaford Community Partnership responsible for the maintaining of green spaces, and overall ‘greening’ of Seaford. We recognise the importance of supporting and contributing to these groups, not just for our own pleasure but to ensure that what we leave behind is a better place for our children and grandchildren to live in. Our objective is to create a system to allow members skilled in Business Management, Creation, Consortium Management, Project and Site Management to engage with local community groups to enable them to develop, grow and become free standing entities with capabilities. In this way the Rotary members can assist where needed on a just-in-time basis, withdrawing when no longer required but maintaining a ‘watching brief ’. Our involvement with multiple groups will allow the individual requirements to be identified and common platforms developed which will assist in the development of composite funding programme. We will update you on specific projects and activities over the next few months, which hopefully will encourage your participation and support.

Looking for a calendar for next year?

Don’t forget Seaford Community Calendars are now on sale, beautiful pictures and all proceeds go to local charities, the RNLI at Newhaven and the Youth Counselling Project in Seaford. Our cover picture was taken by Kevan Wilkx and is an example of the wonderful photographs shown throughout the calendar. There are two sizes to fit most spaces and cost is £8 and £6 respectively. Current outlets are Badgers Inks, Barwell’s the Solicitors and JXP Financial Services. You can also search for ‘Seaford Community Calendar’ on Facebook and join our page. If anyone is willing to sell them for us please contact Nick White on nick88nick@gmail.com. Interested in Martello Rotary? Use our QR code link to find out more.

Opportunity is knocking for homeowners in Seaford In this month’s article, we discover why the opportunity clocks are ticking for people in Seaford wanting to make the most of the Stamp Duty holiday. ‘Life is a Game’ is a quote attributed to Mother Teresa, but it could be easily applied to property. And as with all games, there are winners and losers when it comes to selling a home. With the announcement that Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) for properties under £500,000 is eliminated until 31st March 2021, there’s now plenty of opportunity knocking on the doors of homeowners in Seaford. Depending on what source you look at, it takes on average (from a cold start) between 176 to 200 days to sell a home. This means the opportunity clock is now ticking if you want to get moved before the March deadline and save thousands. The Stamp Duty holiday means: • Deals that were dead in the water over a difference in value (especially between £15,000 – £30,000) are now potentially resurrected. • Having more to put down as a deposit is opening more of the mortgage market to buyers.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

• If you’re thinking of selling, you’ll also benefit from the Stamp Duty removal if the place you’re moving on to is under the £500,000 bracket. • Plus, if the property you are moving to is over the threshold, you’ll still save money because you won’t pay SDLT on the first £500,000. Now is probably the best time to sell your home during the past four years. So, if you are interested to know how we’d help you make the most of the Stamp Duty stampede, we’d love to have a chat with you. Thanks for reading.

EASE THE STRAIN OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ON MIND & BODY It’s no surprise that coronavirus has triggered a boom in digital communication. Social networks have helped us foster resilience by reducing isolation and facilitating remote learning and work from home. Yet as technology deepens inroads into almost every aspect of our lives, it dislocates us from nature, from sensory experience in the body, physical activity and internally focused moments. Using devices affects the brain and research shows that our cognitive processes, attention span and ability to take in new information are changing. Virtual meetings devoid of embodied communication signals can be mentally fatiguing and physicality so diminished that after prolonged screenbound activity we come back to a body full of small repetitive strains, tension, dull aches and pain. Across the globe our world has been turned upside down, yet, as summer 2020 gives way to a new term we are tentatively finding our feet in the so-called ‘new normal’. One thing’s for sure, digital technology and our reliance on it to mediate our lives is here to stay. As we adapt it’s important to in-build good habits for self-care and wellbeing. Here are a few simple but effective exercises to do at regular intervals at your desk that can help:

Blink slowly as if your eyelashes softly open and

close your eyes. Then quicker ‘butterfly’ blinks.

Simply See

Take your eyes away from your screen and for a few moments simply look around your room, trace slowly the outlines of whatever you see, notice shape, colour, light, shade, textures. Become aware of the edges of the room. The key is to slow down and notice your breath. Bring your gaze to parts of your body that you can see, acknowledge your physical presence in relation to the space and a sense of being in the here and now.

Palming Rest your elbows on your desk or table, rub the palms of your hands together, then cup them over your eyes. Feel warmth radiate from your palms to relax the muscles around your eyes and visualise darkness

116

soothing the optic nerve. At first you may see after images or lights, which will gradually fade as the optic nerve relaxes. Breathe slowly and deeply, gently drop your shoulders away from your neck. Stay ‘palming’ for 3 to 10 minutes (or longer) to calm your mind and refresh tired eyes. To finish, softly blink your eyes and let light in around the edges of your hands then slowly take them away from your face. Take a few more deep breaths before you move on.

Touch your Face

Walk your fingertips along your eyebrows, trace around the bony orbits of the eyes and bridge of your nose. Smooth open across your forehead, lightly dust cheekbones and track along the jawline.

Smile & Yawn Smiling is naturally uplifting – it also

relaxes tension held by a glazed over facial expression. Yawning stretches tight jaw muscles, stimulates the production of tears that lubricate the eyes and expels stale air from the lungs.

Upward Stretch

Interlace your fingers (over the backs of your hands) and press your palms to the ceiling with arms raised overhead. Take 3-5 deep breaths – open your arm pits and lift up out of your waistline. Open and lower your arms to press your hands down into your seat, roll your shoulders back, lift the breastbone, your gaze and take 3-5 more breaths.

Figure of 4 stretch

Sit squarely on your chair, root your sit-bones and soles of the feet. Try not to disturb your pelvis, lift your R foot and place it across your L knee (don’t rush or force your way into this position and do not do this exercise if you have a replacement hip).

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Keep your spine straight, sides of your waist even and fold forwards from your hips to stretch behind the R hip. Stay in this position for at least 5 breaths and then come out of it slowly. Repeat with the L foot over the R knee.

Stretch your Back

Stand in front of your desk with hands on the edge. Walk your feet back and fold forwards from your hips to make a tabletop with your back. Feel the underneath of your arms stretching, and the backs of your legs (bend your knees slightly and stick out your butt), connect your arms to your shoulder blades in the upper back – stay for at least 5 breaths.

Rise above it all Curl your tailbone under and

press your pelvis towards your desk. As the upper back begins to uncurl press your hands into the desk, let your heels lift, engage butt muscles to stretch the front of your hips. Stay for a few breaths with your chest lifted, arching backwards and looking up. Then lower your heels and flex your hips back into tabletop and repeat both moves – try to connect them into a flow.

SEAFORD BAPTIST CHURCH

Minister’s Reflection

On our recent canal boat holiday our route took us through two tunnels – one of them was a mile long – at a slightly slower speed of 2mph, we entered the tunnel. At first, you were just aware of darkness enveloping you, but then, as you looked ahead you saw a small pin prick of light, which became larger and larger as the boat came nearer to end of the tunnel. There was indeed light at the end of the tunnel. For some of us, who are going through our personal tunnels of ill health or personal difficulties, we may feel that there is no light at the end of our tunnels. On the boat, we were not simply reliant on the light at the end of the tunnel to see our way through; at the front of the boat one of us sat with a torch, and together with the light on the boat, we had light travelling with us, lighting each step of the way. In John’s gospel, he reminds us that Jesus is the true light, who gives light to everyone, and, as followers of Jesus, we have the light of Christ within us. We have hope that there is the light at the end of the tunnel; but we also carry light with us. We bring that light into every place, every relationship, every conversation we enter into.

Seaford Kurlers Hello Seaford Sceners. Seaford Kurlers committee has made the difficult decision that whilst all the Covid-19 regulations are in place, it is not possible to play the sport of new age kurling. The social distancing, face masks and cleansing routines imposed, make it impossible to play and enjoy the game. Every piece of equipment that is handled will have to be swabbed each time a player has taken their turn and brings the stones back to base line. The score mat will have to be swabbed, as well as the storage cupboard. Sadly this is not viable and too costly for the club.
