Welcome...

to the October issue of Seaford Scene. As I write this to you, the government have introduced the ‘Rule of Six’ socialising restriction, as the number of coronavirus cases rise. If we are to ever get through to the other side of this pandemic, we must continue to do the right thing and stay safe and socially distanced. Remember hands... face...space! Aside from the pandemic however, there are other global issues to contend with, and in this issue we have articles regarding climate change (pages 6 and 119), the effect that plastic has on our planet (pages 30 and 54) and environmental concerns (page 5, 70 and 115). On a lighter note, I’m pleased to announce that Newhaven Country Market has opened it’s doors again, page 52 and the Garden Show at Firle will be in full swing from the 16th to 18th (page 24). The Corelli Ensemble will be performing live in Seaford (page 116) whilst other ‘What’s On’ events are listed on page 121. Please note that events may be cancelled at short notice due to COVID-19, so do check with the organisers beforehand. Find out how funds have been raised for Macmillan Cancer Research on page 22, and if you’ve been getting out on your bike over the last few months during lockdown, Cycle Seahaven offers invaluable advice regarding safe cycling (page 12). All this and so much more in your October issue. Oh, and don’t forget the clocks go back on the 25th! Stay safe and well!

hoped that it should be completed by the end of October. This will however be weather and tide dependent.

The Town Council is pleased to report that repair work at Splash Point has started.

The works will require plant and machinery equipment on the promenade so for the interest of public safety, and to ensure that the works can be completed as quickly as possible, we ask that people stay away from plant and machinery equipment. The work is being undertaken by CJ Thornes on weekdays, between 7am and 7pm.

Unfortunately, in February, Splash Point was so badly storm damaged that it had to be shut off from the public. The Town Council is pleased to announce that it has agreed to jointly fund, with Lewes District Council and the Environment Agency, repair work to this much-loved and iconic seafront feature. Works have commenced and it is

A Covid-19 focused Risk Assessment has been carried out, which can be found here and all necessary environmental consents have been obtained. Members of the public will be kept up to date as the project progresses and on when Splash Point will be fit to reopen.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND SEAFORD On the 20th August Seaford Town Councillors unanimously declared a Climate Emergency following the example, rather belatedly, of the Government, East Sussex County Council, Lewes District Council and most councils throughout the country, and reflecting the majority of scientific and popular opinion worldwide. What does declaring a Climate Emergency mean, and how will it materially change anything? This is a very good question and one which was levelled at me when I first put the idea to Full Council last autumn. It could mean very little, as has been seen with the Paris Accord, where European Governments made pledges to reduce carbon emissions drastically, but in practice none have met their goals. But it could mean a lot if together we take action in our town to reduce our carbon use, try to live sustainably and actively support our neighbourhoods to be resilient and environmentally aware. Climate Change is a hugely complicated subject, but after the recent extreme weather conditions – wildfires, thawing of ice-caps and unbelievable biodiversity loss – it should be apparent to any reasonable person that this is a real event which will affect the lives of us humans and possibly every living thing on the planet. As a seaside town it may affect us more with the predicted rises in sea levels. The Climate Change Working Party (CCWP) at Seaford Town Council was formed last autumn to look at how we in Seaford can aspire to reduce our carbon output as a council and as a town. I, with four other councillors, have worked hard to look at things that can be achieved within the town. Much of what needs to be done, we recognise, needs to be on a large scale and this involves infrastructure change and countrywide policy change from central government, which is beginning to be seen, although very slowly and not at sufficient scale of investment.

6

But we also agree that there is a role for everyone in society to contribute and ‘do their bit’ in helping to reduce our impact on the environment and therefore our climate. The smallest actions can cumulatively have a large effect. For instance, if everyone who only needed a couple of things from the town centre left a bit more time and walked or cycled there instead of using the car, that would be a large carbon saving throughout the year. It would also be healthier for them taking the exercise and for others not being affected by the exhaust. Locally there are some active groups, a few of them listed below, who are keen to work on neighbourhood projects to do with saving our green spaces, and encouraging wildlife and sustainability. Do join up with one of them or, if you’d prefer, create a space for wildlife in your own garden, or make a hedgehog run through your garden fence. Every little helps! The CCWP thanks councillors for backing the declaration and now looks forward to the community getting behind this decision and making our town safe and sustainable for the future. Cake and Charity!

For many of us the past months since Covid-19 arrived the time has flown by. For some the opposite. At least being a member of a club the more able members have been able to connect with those less fortunate and given support to help carry on though the difficulties. Thank heavens for the telephone and Skype. With the easing of lockdown we have enjoyed a number of small tea parties (photo below),

hosted by our joint Presidents. This enabled some members to see each other for the first time since March. New skills had to be learned so that we could hold group meetings on Zoom (photo top) – another new word to remember – but we completed two monthly meetings and our AGM successfully. As a result plans have been made for ways to raise money to enable us to assist needy causes. We hope to run a stall at the Rotary Boot Fair (weather permitting) and arrange coffee mornings for small groups of members, both to raise money but also to keep in touch with one another (that’s where the cake comes in!). So many of our normal gatherings have been cancelled. District and National rallies have fallen by the way. It is through these meetings that we get to mix with members from all over the country and share ideas, and come away having made new friends and ideas to support our fundraising endeavors locally. Lets hope that soon we can get back to a state of normality. Andrea Butti, Club Correspondent

Nominate a family in your area in need of a free holiday Do you know a family, NHS or frontline worker in your area that has been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and needs a break? As part of the nation’s emotional and wellbeing recovery from the pandemic, the national charity YHA (England and Wales) wants to give away free holidays to families in your area. The breaks have been funded from donations from members of the public to YHA’s Project90 appeal which was launched as part of the youth hostelling charity’s 90th anniversary celebrations. Donations to date will enable YHA to fund a total of 400 much-needed family breaks across England and Wales. Conscious that fewer people can now afford a break because of the pandemic, YHA particularly wants to hear from families that have been financially impacted in the crisis and are in need of some quality family time together. Family time together on holiday is more important than ever. In a survey* conducted by the 90 year old charity, it was found that more than three quarters (77%) of parents believe that an annual family holiday is important in order to spend more time with their family however 12% of survey respondents had not been able to take a family holiday at all in the last three years. While the free breaks are being rolled out, fundraising for YHA’s Project90 campaign continues. YHA hopes to raise a further £120,000 to give breaks to 500 more families in need of rest, recuperation or spending

quality time away together. The breaks are available at YHA’s network of youth hostels in England and Wales in both coastal and rural locations. The 153-strong network of youth hostels, which were closed during Lockdown, re-opened on 17th July with a pledge from the charity to play a key role in the recovery of society by helping people reconnect with each other, the outdoors, nature, culture and heritage. James Blake, Chief Executive of YHA (England and Wales) explained: ‘The pandemic has put enormous financial and emotional strain on many people and has left a number of NHS and frontline workers and families suffering hardship. A break away together can make all the difference to these families and be an important part of their wellbeing recovery. It will give them valuable time together to reconnect in the outdoors as well as have fun in the process. ‘I very much hope that people will get in touch with us and either put themselves forward for a break or nominate a family that they feel would benefit from spending some quality time together.’ If you know of a family that would benefit from a short break away, let YHA know at https:// getinvolved.yha.org.uk/breaks-for-key-workers/ To donate to YHA’s Project90 campaign and help it reach even more families, please visit getinvolved.yha. org.uk/fundraising/appeals/project90/

Cycle Seahaven Helmets – A matter of choice Cycle Seahaven is now beginning to put on rides for its members, ensuring COVID-19 safety regulations are maintained by limiting the number of riders per ride leader. On our rides, safety is of utmost importance and for this reason, one of our rules when joining a ride is that a helmet is worn at all times. During the pandemic, many people dug out their bikes, or treated themselves to a new one, but one thing I noticed was either the lack of, or ill-fitting helmets. Some of the sights I saw included helmets being carried on the handlebars rather than worn, or helmets that were so far back on heads, they were almost vertical and offering no protection to the forehead or temples. A common sight is when families are out riding – quite often the children are wearing helmets but the adults don’t. I can’t help but wonder if they have thought about the impact on their children, if their mum or dad were no longer around, or suffered injuries so severe they were unable to care for their children? Whilst the use of helmets for cyclists is not law within the UK, research has shown that they can be very effective in reducing serious head injuries and even death, but it is important that they are worn correctly. The following information is from RoSPA article written in March 2018: Although helmets cannot be expected to be effective in preventing or reducing the extent of head injury in all scenarios, evidence does suggest that helmets are effective in reducing injuries. The effectiveness of the helmet is therefore dependent on the type of collision that the cyclist is involved in, the injury tolerance of the rider and the surface that the helmet makes contact with (e.g. a kerb or a car bonnet). A Cochrane Review found that five case-control studies from different countries showed the large protective effect of helmets. The review suggested that helmets decreased the risk of injury to the head and the brain by 65%-88% and the upper and mid-face by 65%. However, the review

12

did acknowledge that little to no protection is offered to the lower face and jaw. Recent studies have found that helmets do offer protection to the cyclist’s head, but often to a lesser extent. A French Would you rather have study found that helmets this damage to your contributed to a 24%-31% helmet or damage to reduction in head injury and a your head? 70% reduction in head injuries categorised at more than a level 2 (moderate injury) on the abbreviated injury scale. Cycle helmets must adhere to standard EN1078, (EN1080 for children) which states that a helmet must be designed to withstand an impact similar to an average rider travelling at 12mph falling onto a stationary kerb-shaped object from a height of one metre. To ensure that your helmet meets this standard, look for a CE marked EN1078 sticker. Helmets should be replaced on average every three years, or if they have received any kind of impact. With nearly 400 members in Cycle Seahaven, we have seen some injuries but thankfully, all who have experienced some horrific crashes, have been able to get back out on their bikes and many of these are due to helmets being worn. So whilst it is a matter of choice, we do urge you to consider it, whilst you can and remember, if you are a member of Cycle Seahaven, you are entitled to a 10% discount at Mr Cycles who can help ensure you get a properly fitting helmet. Membership starts at just £7 per year. Information can be found on our website www.cycleseahaven.org.uk.

seaford U3A News Seaford U3A does not stand alone! It is part of an international movement which began in France in 1973 at the University of Toulouse under the guidance of Professor Pierre Vellas. The model adopted in France is that each U3A is linked to a local university to partake of the academic life and teaching available. This model is followed in many other countries, including most European ones, but not in Britain. There are even U3As in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia, with an online U3A in Russia, linked to universities. When the U3A movement reached Britain in 1981 it was taken up by three founder members, but it was and is radically different to the French model, being based on self-help. Although there is a national coordinating body, The Third Age Trust, each branch is self-governing, self-financing and there is no connection with universities. In 2016 the British U3A movement started its 1,000th branch and there are now over 400,000 members nationally. The British model was copied in Australia, Cyprus, Dominica, New Zealand and South Africa. In Australia it was started in 1984 and by 2013 there were 250 U3As with 85,000 members. In Canada there are U3As in Ontario and in the USA there is a similar organisation called Lifelong Learning Institutes. Lewes had a U3A branch earlier than Seaford and two of the four founder members of Seaford U3A started off in 1986 being members of Lewes. In April 1989 they organised an inaugural meeting in Seaford and 25 people joined immediately. A steering group was set up, some courses organised and a General Meeting was held in December 1989 when the number of members rose to 60. There were ten courses organised in the first year entitled Power in British Society, Modern Communications, Science in the Community, 20th-century Literature, French conversation (beginners and intermediate), German, Listening to Music, Introduction to Music and Recorder Playing. For a small new branch this was an amazing range of interests, and the members responded with enthusiasm. From the beginning Seaford U3A was also a contributor to the Sussex U3A Network (SUN), joining with other local U3As to hold workshops and Study Days.

14

By the second year Seaford U3A had 108 members and eighteen courses. The photograph above shows a patchwork wall hanging made at one of the early courses and now hanging in the committee room at Seaford Museum. The different events increased. Guided walks were introduced from the beginning; there was a newsletter; the U3A Orchestra started and is now a very popular part of the U3A; Seaford Handbell Ringers started as a five-week U3A course; the monthly Coffee Morning was introduced, as was the monthly Tea Party and Downs Talks. There were increasingly ambitious outings to places of interest and exhibitions. By 2019 Seaford U3A had over 400 members and was going strong. In the present difficult times it is encouraging to look back and see how the U3A has grown nationally and in Seaford. We can take inspiration from that and seek to continue its successes. For more information about Seaford U3A and also about its linked organisations, Sussex U3A Network (SUN) and SE U3A Region see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. The Town Crier’s New Clothes! Although I have been Town Crying since 1972 (officially appointed to Seaford on 1st January 1977) and been Serjeant at Mace since 2012, I now have, for the first time, a light(er) weight Summer Uniform. (photo right). The ‘weskit’ was made by my usual tailor, G. D. Golding of St Albans (Warranted Tailor by appointment to H. M. The Queen – making her family’s Naval uniforms); and funded by Seaford Town Council – the first time the Council have purchased part of the Town Crier and Serjeant at Mace’s uniforms. Thank you STC!

The blue uniform (photo left) was made by a national newspaper for a Crier in Somerset, and now dresses a tailor’s dummy in Seaford Museum. This allows me to boast I am the only Town Crier to be stuffed by public demand! That gets me past the period of appearing as ‘The Man in Tights!’ The more military style uniform (photo right) was crafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s tailor, based in Exeter of course! Based on a Bishop’s frockcoat, it has a ‘Poacher’s Pocket’ in each of the two coat-tails. Why? ‘For Sherry and Port!’ the Tailor told me. Other ‘military’ versions (photo left – uniform with square shoulders) were made by G. D. Golding, based on a single photograph (photo below) of Town Serjeant and occasional stand-in Crier, William

The Jabot (or stock) was made by experienced local designer of Wedding Dresses and Stage Costumes, my very good friend Meg Lewis. With a smaller (less tall) top hat, this relieves some of the problems our hotter summers are causing the loudest man in town! Marching ahead of the marching band and cadets at last year’s Armed Forces Day Parade, from Broad Street to Martello Field, in a temperature of 32ºC, was quite an experience in the traditional Greatcoat and Gloves! The first two uniforms were made in 1951 for the Festival of Britain for Crier and former Guardsman Charles Keep (photo left), and the replacement copy for me in 1978. The latter, made by Jessie Keep and paid for by Seaford Rotary Club, still appears on local stages adorning Mr Bumble in the musical ‘Oliver’.

Both recent military style coats were funded by public subscription, Rotary Clubs, fundraising events, donations including $500 from one of the Seaford’s in USA, and from our Twin Town, with two people donating their Winter Fuel Allowances. The latest summer uniform has already made some appearances, suitably distanced. If you ask me how I like it, it’ll be: ‘OYEZ! Cool Man! God Save the Queen!’ Peter White, Seaford Town Crier

A big thank you to those who visited Sussex Arts Collective’s ARTWAVE 2020 Exhibition COLLECTIVISTS!

ARTWAVE 2020 COLLECTIVISTS!

The CUCKMERE & FLINT Rooms, Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford.

The Sussex Arts Collective exhibitors and organisers of their ARTWAVE 2020 exhibition ‘COLLECTIVISTS!’ would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to all our visitors during the show. Under not ideal circumstances your patience and adherence to COVID restrictions helped to make the whole affair run smoothly and be a huge success. We can’t express how much we are indebted to you for your enthusiasm and support. Many of our members have had very little or no opportunity to present their work to the public since March, as one event after another were steadily cancelled through the spring and into the summer. With the prospect of the situation not improving in the near future, the exhibitors were, not say the least, very enthusiastic and excited to once more air their work to such an appreciative audience.

Likewise amongst our visitors there were many who had themselves not had the occasion to leave their homes for anything else but to exercise or shop for groceries. On many occasions they spoke of their gratitude for having somewhere to go where they could feel safe, welcome and hugely inspired.

As with all our Artwave exhibitions, ever since our first in 2005, in COLLECTIVISTS! we presented a broad and diverse display of fine art and craft work from members new and those who are very familiar to our regular attendees. But without fail all our exhibitors had used their time during Lockdown to develop and reinvigorate their portfolios. Consequently, it was a show that was not only instantly recognizable as a Sussex Arts Collective exhibition but was also fresh, lively and dynamic, guaranteeing that there was always something to see anew. Unfortunately our two remaining COLLECTIONS 2020 small-scale exhibitions in the Cuckmere Room Crypt Gallery have had to be cut from the Sussex Arts Collective’s programme this year. However, we will be back at the end of November and through out December until Christmas to exhibit our festival selection of work in a show entitled ‘A FESTIVE HULLABALOO!’ So keep your eye on subsequent editions of Seaford Scene, our website www.sussexartscollective.com, our Facebook (@ sussexartscollective) and Instagram (sussex.arts. collective) pages, as well as www.thecryptgallery.co.uk. In the meantime you can relive our fantastic COLLECTIVISTS! exhibition by visiting our Instagram page to watch the videos we have wwuploaded. Keep safe.

Seaford Photographic Society For anybody who is interested in learning more about photography and meeting up with like-minded people, now is a perfect time to join us at SPS. We have a special offer of FREE trial membership from now until the end of 2020 then just £30 from January for the rest of the season. All meetings are on-line using Zoom for the time being. Just send us a message via our Facebook page (@seafordphotographicsociety), or use the contact link on the website www.seafordps. org, and we’ll send you a membership form and invite to our next Zoom meeting. Why not give it a try? We welcome all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. The club held its second Summer Competition in August, this time with the theme of ‘Summer’. We had a very good response with over 40 entries and, as would be expected, people interpreted the theme in widely differing and imaginative ways. We had everything from melting ice creams to rain-swept beaches, but the winning image, ‘Dog Days’ by Simon Watkins, was a beautiful glowing shot of a fox, backlit by the low sun. Second place went to ‘Brits on the Beach’ by Anna-Marie Armstrong. Was it a candid shot or was it posed? Of course it doesn’t matter – it was a great summer image. Third went to Peter Cavanagh’s ‘Through Summer Fields’, another very evocative photo on the set theme. Our outdoor photo meet-ups are proving very popular with members as it’s the first time we’ve been able to meet up in person since March. At the end of August we had a visit to Friston Forest for a morning’s photography and it was a great success with,

10 people including one guest attending. Highlights of the morning included a meadow with thousands of beautiful Fox Moth caterpillars and we were delighted to see a couple of rare Wasp Spiders. These colourful arachnids are new immigrants to the UK from continental Europe and are confined to south of England at the moment but slowly moving north. The next outing is to Birling Gap on Saturday 3rd October. Our first meeting of the new season was held at the beginning of September with a later than usual AGM and presentation of trophies, all on-line using Zoom. Congratulations to all who received prizes, particularly our new Chairman Colin Mitchell who, in the Advanced Group, scooped both first place in the Print League and Photographer of the Year. Steven Wares took the trophy for first place in the PDI League. In the Standard Group Simon Watkins took both the PDI League and Photographer of the Year Trophies so he will go up to the Advanced League for the coming season. Simon Rigby came out on top in the Standard Group Print League. We now have a full and varied programme organised for the year and in October there is a tutorial on Lightroom/Photoshop, two lectures – on ‘Seeing Opportunity’ and ‘Street and Urban Landscape Photography’, plus the usual competitions. Photos from top: Group outing; Wasp Spider; Trophy Winner (Advanced Group) Photographer of the Year Colin Mitchell – also our new Chairman; Summer Competition 2 – ‘Summer’ 1st place – ‘Dog Days’ by Simon Watkins; 2nd place - ‘Brits on the Beach’ by Anna-Marie Armstrong.

fundraising for Macmillan Cancer support group Champion fundraiser, Geoff Stonebanks, tells us how he has fared this year, raising money for his cherished charity, Macmillan Cancer Support, through his Driftwood Fundraising Group. He’s been raising money for them since 2012 and the grand total to date is an incredible £85,000. What a strange year he’s had with his fundraising for 2020. The annual garden trail had to be cancelled, which should have taken place at the end of July, his own garden, Driftwood remained closed all year and the monies normally raised from a grand raffle at Driftwood failed to materialise due to the pandemic. Geoff tells us that in 2019 he and his volunteer team of garden owners and helpers raised in excess of £14,000 for the charity. He decided to set himself the target of trying to raise £5,000 this summer and as it transpired he hit just over £4,000 but still not bad with the challenges that had to be overcome. By the time the decision was taken to cancel the trail, back in April, 17 gardens had signed up to open. Geoff asked owners if they could make a short film of their garden, which he would edit and add music to. Several agreed and Geoff went out and filmed some of the others himself. The net result was 12 of the 17 had virtual tours available to view on the trail website www. macmillangardentrail.co.uk and were jointly viewed almost 2,000 times over late July and early August! Adam and Dan, owners of 11 Rugby Road in Brighton, were scheduled to open and decided to sell products, including plants, they would have been selling at their summer events, out in front of their garden. They donated a percentage of all their June sales to Driftwood Fundraising Group. Jan Wilks from Peacehaven contacted Geoff, knowing he had been struggling to raise funds, as his garden was closed. She said she was so bored during lockdown that she made facemasks from fabric she already had at home. She raised over £1,000 and wanted to give half

22

to Macmillan, which she donated to Geoff. Geoff too had organised a fundraiser on social media for his birthday in April and raised nearly £500. Other online fundraisers were set up too. Debbie Pryer, a volunteer at Stanford & Cleveland Community Garden, which was also scheduled to open in Brighton, suggested the volunteer team there donate plants and sell them to passers by and ask them to log on and donate to the Just Giving site Geoff had set up. They raised over £1,000, a great team effort again, enabling Geoff to hand £4,106 to the charity for 2020. Sarah Coxhill, Area Relationship Fundraising Manager in the South East wrote to Geoff and said, ‘I have returned from a period of furlough to hear what incredible work you have continued to do (including continuing to raise thousands, in addition to much needed coverage) despite everything thrown at what would normally be such an interactive face-to-face event. I am eternally impressed with your tenacity, drive and commitment to Macmillan and the awareness alone it delivers to our cause – we have never needed it more and it heartens me enormously to see your familiar name pop up leading the way of how things can be done in times of adversity. A huge thank you and congratulations from me’ Fingers crossed the trail will take place on 24th and 25th July 2021, and Driftwood can open its garden gate too. See Geoff’s proposed 2021 open dates at www. driftwoodbysea.co.uk. The Garden Show

at Firle Place 16th - 18th October, 10am - 5pm daily Firle, Nr Lewes, BN8 6LP.

We are sure you are as keen to get out and about as we are. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all our lives and cast a blight on those otherwise hardy perennials, The Garden Shows at Firle, Stansted and Loseley. However, the country is opening up again and we are pleased to announce the shows are good to go ahead and ready to blossom again. We have already had two very successful shows this year at both Loseley Park and Stansted Park. The showground layouts were altered so that physical distancing could be maintained, and other safety regulations were implemented so you may be confident that everyone’s wellbeing and good health comes first. Although there will be necessary change the essence remains the same: ‘to support the smaller business and have a good day out in beautiful locations’. Now is the chance to be social and gather together again, albeit at a safe scial distance. The Garden Show at Firle Place is now in its 13th year, proving that it’s the perfect time and place to plot and plan for the garden year, and be inspired to enhance the home and your lifestyle with specialist growers guiding one to the right plant for the garden and the right place in the garden for that plant. Although there will be fewer plants, it’s the perfect time for autumn planting with trees, shrubs, bulbs, winter flowering and indoor plants too! Plenty of garden-related goods, artisan designs, homeware products, garden furniture, sundries, fashion accessories and the most delicious harvest festival of country foods… So why not do a bit of early Christmas shopping? The show specifically encourages the smaller businesses, and the majority of stands are from the local area. New for 2020 the Studio Shops in the beautiful Old Georgian Riding School, showcasing and demonstrating unique artisan and design work, and Weald Craft Tent will be full with a variety of craft wares.

24

Apart from the extensive selection of retail companies at the Show there are many other attractions. Expert advice daily from The Gardening Doctors, Val and Steve Bradley. The show welcomes back, on the Sunday, Ben Cross from Crosslands Nursery, who will be extolling the British Cut Flower Industry … ‘British Flowers Rock!’ Ben has grown a bumper crop of flowers, but was worried that they would go to waste, so instead he teamed up with a supermarket to send his blooms to frontline NHS workers with their food orders. Visitors have the opportunity to wander up to beautiful St Peter’s Church and into Firle Place Herb Garden and around to the Park. There are plenty of activities on site to keep all the family occupied, including The Giant Tombola, a chance to win amazing prizes donated by The Garden Show exhibitors in aid of Hands of Hope, the show’s chosen charity (www.hohcharity.co.uk). There will be all the fun of the fair, keeping younger visitors busy and happy whilst anyone from 5 years to any age can try their hand at archery! There will be ongoing Artisan workshops and demonstrations, and The Jazz Trio will be wandering the gardens delighting all with their evocative music whilst Huxley Birds of Prey thrill the crowds as they soar to the skies. The children’s entertainment on the Saturday and Sunday will bring smiles as they learn to juggle with the jester and join in on a fantastical Halloween Treasure Hunt for younger visitors along with fab Punch and Judy shows! All this and much more. A great day out for the whole family. Life is good in your garden!

RE-PRINTS OF BOOKS BY SEAFORDBASED WRITER AND PERFORMER After the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Seaford-based writer and performer Rose Collis had to postpone her new Arts Council-funded stage show Forty Years Out (And Counting): Performing The Archive until 2021. However, in the meantime, she has taken the opportunity to arrange for the re-publication of two of her ground-breaking books, Portraits To The Wall and Death And The City. In the lively and entertaing Death And The City, Rose Collis explores Brighton as a perfect microcosm of the nation’s ultimate shared experience: death. This small coastal city teems with idiosyncrasies and uncanny landmarks that have had a profound effect on our collective history. Through extensive research, Collis explains why this former fishing village became so significant in our approach to death, attracting a weird and wonderful array of visitors and residents, whose stories illuminate and enrich our understanding of the final human journey. The book covers all main aspects of death: funerals in Grave Undertakings, cemeteries and suchlike in Final Resting Places. There are chapters on causes of death: Accidents Will Happen; The Public Health (featuring everything from epidemics to binge-drinking; By Their Own Hand (suicide); Murder Most Foul and Suffer Little Children (child deaths). The subject of war deaths is separated into two: WWI gets its own chapter. The last chapter, Post-Mortem, deals with all aspects of what happens once someone has died, including wills and obituaries. First published in 1994, Portraits To The Wall is an internationally acclaimed celebration of lesbian lives often concealed by history. It rediscovered the lives and

28

loves, consorts and concerns, passions and politics of a diverse range of British and European women. They include: Composer Dame Ethel Smyth, who wrote the suffragette song, ‘March of the Women’; Edy Craig, actress, writer, feminist and daughter of Ellen Terry, who established Smallhythe Place and the Barn Theatre; Maureen Colquhoun, born in Eastbourne. From 1965 until 1974, she was a member of Shoreham District Council, Adur District Council and West Sussex County Council, and was the first out lesbian MP. Rose Collis says, ‘Twenty-five years after I wrote about it in Portraits to the Wall, the relationship between Queen Anne and her female courtiers became the subject of The Favourite, the acclaimed film starring Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz, which garnered multiple Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations and awards. In 1988, I was one of the few journalists to give column space to a book about a hitherto obscure wealthy lesbian of the manor, who had chronicled the minutiae of her daily life and loves, in four million words’ worth of coded diaries, translated by Helena Whitbread. Of course, now everyone knows her as Gentleman Jack — but back then, only a few of us paid much attention to Anne Lister.’ Both books are available in paperback and Kindle editions, and include the entire original text, plus new Prefaces/Epilogues. Price £9.99, available from Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/y9lngwwr For more information, visit www.rosecollis.com.

The Nature of Plastic Few materials have fallen from grace in modern times as fast as plastic. This is because of a widespread waste problem since the last century, due to people synthesizing and discarding this durable organic polymer into the environment, especially the sea. Back in December, after Storm Atiyah (issue 154, page 43), a piece washed up in Cuckmere Haven encrusted with non-local goose barnacles and, uniquely, a coral (photo right). Brian Rosen and colleagues at the Natural History Museum have since kindly identified the latter as a brooding reef coral (Favia fragum) native to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. A second specimen had washed up in the Netherlands. Evidently some plastic on our beaches comes from as far away as the Americas. We are left wondering what other exotic wildlife is also arriving in this way, especially if it disembarks unspotted. The first artificial plastic (synthesized from phenolic resin) was bakelite in the first half of the last century. An old piece from the beach was illustrated in the last issue (issue 161, page 88). The mysterious number under the molded logo has since revealed that it was the back of an oxygen gauge (photo below,1p for scale) from the cockpit of a Spitfire or Halifax – indispensable when flying above 17,000 feet (over five kilometres) high. Some plastic is perfectly natural, including amber (fossilised tree resin) which is millions of years old and used to make jewellery, whilst beautifully preserving extinct species

30

of wildlife. A piece about an inch across (photo left) turned up with strombolo (local fossil wood) on Seaford beach in the aftermath of Storm Dennis in February. Unlike on the East coast, amber is rare here, so Ewa Wagner-Wysiecka at Gdansk University of Technology kindly analyzed it. Unexpectedly, it matched Dominican amber from the Caribbean. Amber doesn’t naturally cross oceans, so it appears to have got here with human help. Some natural plastic is also elastic, like rubber. Perhaps the most curious rubber item on the beach is small, circular pieces, usually two-and-a-half inches across, with a central hole and molded pattern (photo right) often with inscriptions (photo below) on one side. Thanks to a visit to a retro cobbler’s shop in the 1970s (half a century old then), we recognize these as rotary heels from antique leather town shoes, useful if (like Ed) you walk unevenly. They would have come off easily on our pebbly beach before modern plastic beachwear. Christopher Columbus was intrigued to see the indigenous people of the New World playing with rubber balls made from tree latex. This milky white ooze can be found in other plants, including our local dandelions (Taraxacum, photo right). We have yet to make our first natural elastic band, especially as latex can irritate the skin. Love it or hate it, the story of plastic is far from finished. Ed and Biddy Jarzembowski

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

The Royal Society of St George

VJ Day Commemorations

VJ Day, Saturday 15th August, was commemorated throughout the country. In Seaford the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George was supported by the Mayor, Cllr Rodney Reed, with a small commemoration at the Town’s War Memorial. The Mayor welcomed all at 10.45am and this was followed by prayers led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Revd Andy Machin, before the exhortations read by Ken Jupp, Chairman of the Seaford RBL, then there was the national two minutes’ silence. Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Christoper Goodchild from the Seaford Silver Band. The Town Crier, Peter White, at the same time as Criers throughout the Country, gave a cry in which he announced the day and included a tribute to two local men who were involved in the war against Japan. The late Major Peter Gadsdon MBE MC, who fought in the Arakan and at Kohima, and the late Roger Rothwell, who

was captured at the fall of Singapore. Both returned to civilian life after the war and pursued successful careers. Seaford resident Peter Gadsdon also became a local councillor and chairman/president of the Alfriston Branch RBL. Roger Rothwell was Headmaster of a school at Rye, before becoming headmaster of Tideways School at Newhaven then in retirement Town Clerk at Newhaven.’ Photo: At the Seaford War Memorial, (left to right) Cllr Rodney Reed, Mayor of Seaford, Laurie Holland, President of the Seahaven Branch RSSG and Major Bob Peedle MBE, Chairman.

A dramatic sea rescue At Seaford Museum and Heritage Society, we decided to recall some of the more dramatic moments in Seaford’s history month by month. From armed mutiny to storm mayhem and much more in between. On 21st October 1998, the Dutch sail training vessel Eendracht left Newhaven harbour with a crew of about 15 and a sail training crew of 36. The latest of a long line of Dutch vessels to bear the name ‘Eendracht’ (meaning ‘Unity’) dating back to about 1655, she is a three masted schooner. The Eendracht left harbour under engine power, the gale force 8 storm winds being too energetic for the ship to take sail. Unfortunately as the vessel left harbour, either the engine cut out or the propeller caught a fishing net and the vessel began to drift before the wind. Despite the efforts of the crew, the schooner was grounded on the shingle at Tide Mills. The subsequent events, described as ‘The biggest air-sea rescue ever seen in the South’, were shown country-wide on television. Within minutes, the alarm was raised and expert teams of coastguards, lifeboatmen, helicopter crews, police, paramedics and welfare workers sprang into action. Two helicopters were scrambled from Lee on Solent and Portland after attempts by the Meeching Tug and the lifeboat to tow the ship off the beach failed. ‘Sparks’ from Newhaven recalled in 2009 (http://www. ournewhaven.org.uk/ ) ‘The pilot boat was first on the scene, followed by the lifeboat and tug. The Coastguard came down to the beach and tried to get a line aboard. The helicopter seemed to turn up very quickly and it was lucky it did. We were amazed when we found out how many people were onboard, including some

disabled crew. It was decided to winch people off but the helicopter could not carry that many. It was then decided to do it in batches and to land them on the beach. Because it was so cold and wet we decided to get the buffet on standby, and I got my team to get the Stena buses up to ferry the crew back to the buffet a bit later on. East Sussex emergency services backed us up with a soup kitchen. Thankfully all went well although I was asked at the time who was going to pay the buffet bill. My reply was to take it out off my wages! Stena Line did pay the tab, thank heavens!’ Two days later, as the storm eased, the vessel was freed from the shore at high tide, after diggers had removed shingle from around its hull, and the Eendracht was towed to Dover by the Newhaven tug Lady Hamilton. There it underwent seaworthiness tests before returning to Holland. Seaford Museum hopes to be reopening regularly soon. In the meantime we would like to say thank you to all those who have volunteered to help us. Photos: Eendracht aground, 21st October 1998.

Citizens Advice

Drowning in debt?

During the pandemic there has been a significant easing in debt collection methods with mortgage holidays, rental security and no bailiff visits, however, this won’t last forever. With this is in mind, Lewes District Citizens Advice is encouraging people to take advantage of their free debt advice. Jackie Wilkes, Chief Officer, says: ‘In the past, debt has always been one of our top enquiry issues, but during the lockdown this has reduced. People seem reluctant to get to grips with their debts while some things are on hold, but it is vital that people don’t let things get out of control’. The good news is that debt can be managed and help is available. The first step is to check the Citizens Advice website, which can guide you on a number of debt-

related issues, and even has interactive options such as the debt remedy tool. You can also make contact via a webform on the Contact Us section. If a one-to-one approach is more appealing, we have specially trained debt advisers available to help you. Our aim is to help people regain control of their finances and, where possible, repay their debts at a level which is affordable, whilst allowing enough money for daily living costs. At every stage the client is in control and they make the decisions they are comfortable with. Whatever you decide, don’t put off dealing with debts until it’s too late. Help is at hand – call us today.

Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team (SVET) Latest News Phone line hours: Mon to Fri: 9am – 5pm. Tel: 01323 364058 In September we asked you to use our new phone number as we moved into a new stage of supporting those are still vulnerable. The original number is still live for diverts so we have not been missing anyone, however the number of calls continues to decline. The National and local situation moves constantly so we are unable to predict exactly where we will be by the time you read this. However we will react speedily to any further decrease – or potential increase – in requests for help and according to local public health advice. This means we may make sudden service changes but there will always be an answerphone message to let you know and we will post on our Facebook Group, website and via and other local media. Now that the shops and cafés are open again more people are venturing out in their masks to stand in line for their own prescriptions and support our local shops, as well as meet up with their friends for a socially distanced coffee both inside and out. We hope the weather holds for a few weeks so we can continue to enjoy the fresh air and keep our independence. We are still going to be here for you in an emergency. We are able to respond to anyone who suddenly has to go into isolation, or falls ill, but this means we need your help to enable us to pay for the phone line, PPE and other things we need to keep everyone safe. Many people have offered to donate to support us in the last few weeks but previously we did not have a means to collect any money. There is no obligation from those we are helping but we have set up a ‘GoFundMe’ which you can find on our Facebook page and website or ring our help line 01323 364058 if you are not online and we will tell you what to do. A big thank you to everyone who has already done so. Remember, you can also contact us on our website https://svet.proffer.org.uk and fill in the request form for support. Thank you to everyone who has pulled together to make this possible.

TOP TIPS – no. 4 Revitalise your old kitchen or wardrobe doors…

… A cheap way to bring new life to old kitchen or

wardrobe doors is to apply one or two coats of oil based eggshell paint. Prepare by rubbing down lightly with 180 grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface clean with white spirit and apply the paint with a small fine wool roller. You need to work quickly and avoid going back over painted areas as it starts to dry or you will pull the surface and create roller marks. If the colour is the same as before you may get away with only one coat. For a change of colour, lightly rub down and clean with white spirit between coats

Postings for newly joined groups will continue through the Autumn. Next Spring ‘Support our Seaford Charities’ will be a fundraiser organised jointly by Martello Rotary Seaford , Newhaven Peacehaven Seaford Lions, Seaford Rotary, Seaford Bonfire Society and National Coastwatch Initiative – Newhaven. Covid-19 restrictions provided the opportunity to turn the ‘Mayor’s Garden Walk’ into ‘Seaford’s Secret Gardens’ on Facebook for the town organised by Deputy Mayor Cllr. Jean Cash. This generated many ‘likes’ and ‘sharing’ of the photographs and videos. The Mayor and Deputy

Mayor thank the 17 gardeners who contributed photographs and videos. The Civic Service and the virtual replacement for the Town Forum are available on YouTube as videos. The ‘Secret Garden’ photos and videos are on the Mayor’s Facebook, if you have not done so already, please do take a look. The Mayor with Mayoress Mrs Ann Reed have been able to accept invitations to several socially distanced outdoor events. Events with the Mayor have included a socially distanced Civic Service, Sussex Day flag raising, Armed Forces Day, VJ Day 75 and may continue into virtual Remembrance Events at the War Memorial and the War Graves in Seaford Cemetery. Rev Andy Machin as the Mayor’s Chaplin has led prayers at the War Memorial and has led a ‘Reflection’ before the start of each Council Meeting. Hopefully, the Mayor’s Carol Service will be ‘actual’, in Sutton Baptist Church, socially distanced and on YouTube. A Christmas Card design competition will be launched during the autumn. Seven town Councillors, including the Mayor, took part in the Plastic Free Seaford September Beach Clean. It is encouraging to have our Councillors working together and to experience the strong community spirit of our town. Photo: Cllrs. James Meek, Rodney Reed. NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN & SEAFORD LIONS CLUB Owing to the current circumstances surrounding a particular global pandemic (which shall be nameless!) NP&S Lions, like many other charities, have sadly been unable to organise any of our usual fundraising events this year. Normally by now we would have been involved in several activities, including helping to organise the Seaford Half Marathon, running car boot events, and holding our regular book sales, courtesy of Paradise Park. We would also have manned fundraising stalls, collecting money for other charities such as our local RNLI in Newhaven. Unfortunately, we have been unable to stage any of these events so far this year, and at a time when there has never been a greater call on our services.

So, we are particularly grateful to all the lovely friends who are supporting us each month through the Lewes District Lottery and our NP&S Lions 200 Club, and our particular thanks go to Andy Harsant and members of Seaford Striders, who have kindly donated over ÂŁ400, their entry fees for the postponed Seaford Half Marathon, to our funds. These donations have enabled us to continue our contributions to the local food banks and we are grateful to our volunteer drivers for their ongoing support, using our two minibuses to deliver food parcels to those who are self-isolating, and to do shopping and collect prescriptions for people in our community who are unable to get out and about.

them, and the beautiful coastline where we live has continued to be affected by plastic pollution. We have enjoyed the opportunity to support this project each month, and hope more of you will join Claire, NP&S Lions and other members of our community in these monthly clean-ups.

Volunteering

Over the last few months, we have been grateful to the many people who have volunteered their services to help those in our community who have been selfisolating, with shopping, collecting prescriptions etc. If you have been one of these, have enjoyed volunteering and found it rewarding to help your local community through this difficult time, and think you might like to continue in some way, you would receive a very warm welcome at any of our Lions Clubs. We are always looking to recruit new members, and if you are interested do please check out our NP&S website.

Beach-clean

We were pleased to be able to help out with the local beach-clean when Claire Sumners relaunched this activity after Lockdown. Several Lions and friends and family were out picking litter on the beach, socially distanced, of course. We have been delighted to welcome so many more visitors to our beaches this summer, but sadly they have not all been so conscientious about taking their litter home with To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

What do you like best about Seaford? Seaford Seafront – I love walking along the Promenade in all weathers. What is your favourite piece of music? I love ABBA so it would have to be ‘Waterloo’ – but I also love Classics so I would choose Nimrod by Elgar. What is your favourite film? I have two – The Notebook and Galaxy Quest. What book are you reading at the moment? Anything by Debbie Macomber or Erica James. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Sitting in my garden with friends, sipping tea. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford and why? Sitting on the seafront either at the Sailing Club or at Martello kiosk just watching the sea. Which living person do you most admire? The Duchess of Cornwall. I like the way she deals with life and she is the perfect foil for Prince Charles. What makes you sad? Cruelty to animals or children. What words or phrases do you most overuse? ‘It’ll all come out in the wash’ or ‘In it to win it’. How do you relax? Gardening – I love my garden. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? You only live once – life is not a rehearsal. What is the first line of your favourite poem? Slowly Silently now the moon walks the night in her silver shoon by Walter de la Mare. What is your favourite journey? The top deck on the bus from Seaford to Eastbourne. How would you spend a million pounds? I’d share it with my family. What is your most memorable learning experience? Going to Brighton Art College to do my Art Foundation Course. What is your greatest extravagance? Collecting Christmas Ornaments. What is your greatest fear? Driving on any motorway. What is your favourite smell? Phlox and Sweet Pea flowers – they remind me of my childhood holidays at my great-aunt’s house. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Just be yourself. What would your motto be? What will be, will be. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Queen Victoria – so many inventions happened in her reign, both social and industrial. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My family, especially my grandchildren Flynn and Amali. Anything else you may like to include ? Clive and I would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to all our lovely friends in Seaford – we will miss you!

Volunteer Driver Charity OpenING The Mayor of Newhaven, Councillor Graham Amy, officially opened the Havens Community Cars charity on Monday 7th September at their new office in Thompson Road, Denton. Mayor Amy praised the efforts of the volunteers and Trustees in creating the scheme. He mentioned that he personally knew local people who were unable to use public transport that would benefit from the service, and who needed help to attend vital hospital appointments and other essential daily living journeys. The charity has just appointed Nikki Marten as Scheme Co-ordinator. Chair of Trustees, Paula Woolven, said ‘We were delighted to be able to appoint such an approachable, community-minded manager, and Nikki will sustain and grow this vital new service for coastal residents from Seaford to Saltdean. We know that every journey matters.’ Volunteer drivers can give as little as two hours per week to make a difference, are fully trained and provided with PPE with fuel expenses being reimbursed. To find out more about becoming a volunteer driver or to sign up to become a member, ring 01273 918226 or email havenscommcar@gmail.com Photo: Mayor Amy cutting the ribbon with scheme Co-ordinator Nikki Marten.

Tips for maintaining mental health with dementia To mark World Mental Health Day on 10th October, Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford, offers his advice on how to help someone living with dementia maintain good mental health. Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways, causing distress to the person living with dementia (and those caring for them). They may pace, fidget or become agitated. They might follow a person they live with around the house, seeking reassurance, and may want to go to a place they feel safe. Relatives and loved ones can provide support by offering affection and reassurance and being prepared to listen to their concerns.

Depression

Depression is common among people with dementia, reportedly occurring in 40 to 50 per cent of dementia sufferers. Depression is often experienced during the early stages of the disease, when the person is aware of the decline in their abilities. Regular exercise, in line with their physical ability, may help improve their mood. However, if the depression or anxiety becomes extreme, it is important to seek advice from a GP, as soon as possible.

Memory loss

As we age, some degree of memory loss is to be expected. This is different to the memory changes symptomatic of dementia. It may mean forgetting basic skills such as how to dress and wash oneself, stored knowledge about life events and the ability to recognise loved ones. Research shows that depression can impact the brain’s ability to retrieve memories, possibly exacerbating existing symptoms. Carers can help to manage memory loss by maintaining a regular routine, avoiding stressful situations and using memory aids such as lists and clear written instructions.

Hallucinations

Although hallucinations and delusions that can be experienced by dementia patients are imaginary, they will seem all too real to the person having them and can cause extreme anxiety and distress. You can attempt to minimise the stress by managing the surroundings of the person with dementia. Try to maintain a familiar environment and routines, increase the lighting around the house and use night-lights. Some hallucinations and false ideas can be ignored if they are harmless and do not cause the person to become agitated. Do not take accusations personally and be aware that the person is not able to control this behaviour. At Clifden House, we place the same importance on mental health as physical wellbeing. High standards of care should be a given in any care home setting. We are passionate about delivering quality of life to all our residents, regardless of how advanced their dementia is. We will answer any questions you may have and aim to make this transition as easy as possible for you and your loved one.

For further information please call 01323 896460 to speak to our care team www.clifdenhouse.co.uk To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

ENERGY EFFICIENCY UPDATE

The Green Homes Scheme – new grants to make your home more energy efficient

This is one of a series of articles on energy efficiency in our homes. It’s about the Green Homes Grant scheme introduced in July 2020, and at the time of writing due to be launched in September 2020.

Who? The scheme is aimed at homeowners, and social and private rental landlords.

How much?

It provides grants (not loans) in the form of vouchers up to £5,000 to help make homes more energy efficient. The scheme will usually cover at least two thirds of the cost, but people on low incomes can claim 100% with a possible maximum of £10,000.

What?

It covers the following energy-saving improvements:

Primary category

• Insulation: Solid wall, cavity wall, under-floor, loft, flat roof, room in roof, park home. Low carbon heat: Air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, solar thermal where the home has or is installing wall and loft insulation.

Secondary category

• Draught proofing. • Windows and doors: Double/triple glazing (where

How?

Advice and support will be available from the Simple Energy Advice Service – https://www. simpleenergyadvice.org.uk/ It will also give details of TrustMark and/or Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) registered tradespeople in our area who can do the work.

Why?

The aims are to reduce the costs of home heating and to lower its impact on the environment. For example, if the owner of a semi-detached or end-terrace installed cavity wall and floor insulation costing around £4,000, they would pay £1,320 – with the Government paying £2,680 (and remember a homeowner on low income could claim 100% of the cost). Doing so could save over £200 annually on fuel bills and reduce their carbon footprint by cutting 700kg of CO2 a year. (Thisismoney.co.uk). And home heating is a significant contributor to the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions – 15% of the UK’s carbon emissions comes from residential accommodation (2018 UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions). It seems odd that the Scheme doesn’t include the installation of ordinary (photovoltaic) solar panels – it only includes solar for heating water. It looks like homeowners are on their own on solar panels, although if you install them yourself you can apply for payments from the Smart Export Guarantee Scheme we wrote about last year. Despite the lack of support for photovoltaic solar panels, the Green Homes Grant Scheme looks like a good opportunity to reduce both fuel bills and greenhouse gas emissions. The first step is to contact the Simple Energy Advice Service to see whether the work you want to do is eligible and whether you can get a two-thirds or 100% grant. Anne Fletcher, Mary De Pleave, Donna Lonsdale-O’Brien, Lyn Sands

replacing single glazing), secondary glazing (in addition to single glazing), upgrading to energy efficient doors (where replacing doors installed prior to 2002). Heating controls and insulation: appliance thermostats, hot water tank thermostats, hot water tank insulation, smart heating controls, zone controls, delayed start thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves. You can’t do work in the secondary category unless you also do work in the primary one.

Embracing the Future – We’ve gone virtual Like many people, we learned a lot during the lockdown. When the property market went on hold for the best part of six weeks, we had time to look at how we did things and to explore new ideas. Top of our to-do list was to look at ways we could improve what we do for our clients. The need for social distancing and reducing the risks linked to Covid-19 led us to invest in virtual technology which now allows us to sell and let homes more safely and successfully. We’ve introduced a 3D, 360-degree camera and mapping software which allows people to take a virtual tour of your home. It’s a very fancy piece of kit, but we see virtual tours as being a ‘must-have’ in the future as

Seaford Rotary

What’s it like being a member of Seaford Rotary Club?

Do you need another interest, or want a chance to meet more people in Seaford and have an opportunity to give something back to your community? You may wish to explore joining Seaford Rotary Club. Have you seen businesses around Seaford that are members of our successful Business Partners Scheme displaying the Rotary sign and wondered who we are? At present the club has 40+ members from all walks of life, and we endeavour to raise money to support worthwhile causes. Our club is one of over 1,700 Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. There are over 35,000 Rotary clubs worldwide, with a membership of 1.2 million individual Rotarians. If you wish to join Seaford Rotary, you would be invited to attend three lunchtime meetings. Currently these are being held virtually, but under normal conditions we would be meeting at Seaford Golf Club on a Wednesday. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you, and for you to meet those people who will become your friends. At our vibrant lunchtime meetings, we enjoy each other’s fellowship, sort out our business and welcome invited speakers with wide ranging topics such as Railway Journeys around Britain or Care for the Carers.

So, what do we do?

You may be asked to help out with fundraising activities, which can be great fun, organising car boot fairs, the Christmas sleigh journeys around the streets of Seaford, the French market to name a few, all aimed at raising money for our registered charity. We do not solely raise money but much of what we do is service, or project related. During these difficult pandemic times, we are helping distribute food parcels to those in need for Seahaven Storehouse foodbank. We have two teams that focus on serving the community and the youth of our town. The latter organise and run youth competitions for writing, music, cooking, art, science, and

74

photography, although these are all in abeyance currently due to the pandemic. Once the pandemic restrictions are relaxed, some of us hope to be able to recommence visiting our local primary schools each week to help pupils on a one-to-one basis with reading, and others will enjoy a similar arrangement for maths at Seaford Head School. One team is also dedicated to international services, helping specific projects, such as the hospital in Bansang, Gambia, or donating to emergencies to provide aid following severe tropical storms or earthquakes. Globally, Rotary has contributed to the eradication of polio. All of this may seem like hard work, but like everything in life, you get out of it what you put in. We do however have fun and a great social life, albeit restricted at present due to this wretched pandemic. We arrange outings to theatres, museums, and places of interest; we have a walking group and an informal breakfast group; we compete against other Rotary Clubs in sports competitions – skittles, darts and a quiz – all an opportunity to meet and socialise with like-minded Rotarians. We are twinned with a French club in Rouen Rouvray and arrange exchange visits. Each member pays an annual subscription which covers the costs of running our registered charity, so that 100% of what we collect from the public goes to worthwhile causes. The Rotary motto is ‘Service Before Self ’, which is how any Rotarian likes to behave, although we do so with the understanding that family, dependants, and work have to take precedence. So why not contact us? We welcome new members. Our website www.seafordrotary.org.uk has lots of information for you to see if this is for you – we are open to all adults of any age. You may find it enriches your life considerably!

Shopping online? How to raise money for Seaford Rotary Club at no cost to yourself

So, this is what you need to do: For Amazon, go to smile.amazon.co.uk (not www. amazon.co.uk), search for Seaford Rotary and select Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust as your selected charity. Then do your shopping as normal. That is it. Just continue to use Amazon Smile from now on, and you will be contributing to our charity funds. Once you have done this, continue to use Amazon Smile for your shopping with Amazon, it will remember to whom you are donating. Once logged on, Amazon Smile is an exact replica of what you see on the Amazon website. For other online stores, use www.easyfundraising.org.uk. You will need to register by providing your name, email address and a password. Then, whenever you want to go online shopping (other than with Amazon) go to: www.easyfundraising.org.uk, select the store you wish to use. The shopping part is exactly the same as you normally experience. Again, Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust will receive a percentage of what you spend. Please use these ways of online shopping. Obesity and COVID-19

What is the link?

COVID-19 and its effects have scared us all, health professionals and public alike. We’re still learning about the virus, but one fact has been all over the news in the past couple of months. Obese people (people with a BMI over 30) are more at risk of complications. Why is this? Most of my friends with BMIs close to or greater than 30 seem perfectly healthy individuals. Should they be worried?

In order to answer this question, we need to look at the immune system: When we catch a virus our body’s defence system is triggered, and inflammation occurs. This is due to our all-purpose innate immune response, which serves as the first wave against foreign invaders. Blood flow increases to the infected area, causing redness and swelling. When your nose blocks and becomes red when you catch a cold, that’s inflammation. This reaction is caused by white blood cells called macrophages and the proteins they produce called cytokines. It’s the cytokines which trigger inflammation. Usually this inflammation is simply a sign that our body is releasing the hormones and proteins which activate our white blood cells to kickstart the recovery process, and ultimately defeat the infection. No inflammation means no defence…and that’s bad.

So far so good; so why is obesity a problem? Well it turns out that white blood cells aren’t the only type of cell that have the ability to produce those inflammation-inducing cytokines. Fat cells (adipocytes) can also do this. Scientists have learned that fat is an active endocrine organ, one that can secrete a whole host of proteins and chemicals, including inflammatory cytokines. When your body keeps adding adipose tissue (fat) cytokines are released by your fat cells, triggering inflammation. Researchers even characterised obesity as ‘…a state of low-grade, chronic inflammation.’ This

means that an obese body has its immune system permanently switched on and is therefore in a constant state of inflammation. Over time this can lead to the development of both minor and major illness and conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

How does this relate to COVID-19? Back in 2009 when the H1N1 Swine Flu was at its most virulent, doctors in Spain noticed that overweight and obese patients were being admitted to intensive care units in disproportionate numbers and took longer to recover than non-obese or overweight individuals. Their increased risk was attributed to the excess number of pro-inflammatory cytokines in their bodies. Researchers in Canada then analysed the flu records for the previous 12 years and found that people who were obese were statistically more likely to be admitted to hospital for respiratory diseases than those whose BMI was in the normal range. They concluded that obese people were an ‘at risk’ population during flu seasons due to their compromised immune response. As we go into the winter and the risk of a second wave of coronavirus, if you have a BMI over 30 it makes sense to try to bring it down and minimise your risk. Talk to your GP. Louise Addison

October – autumn – the beginning of the last quarter of a very strange year. The Society started 2020 on an optimistic note with a busy planned programme of social evenings, coach outings and competitions, and something new. Three workshops were to be held in 2020: ‘Springtime Jobs,’ in March, ‘Caring for your Bonsai,’ in April, ‘Autumn Jobs and Putting the Garden to Bed,’ to d

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD Members are reminded that all events are cancelled to the end of the year. The AGM, which was programmed for November, has been provisionally rearranged for our meeting on 28th January 2021, at St Leonard’s Church Hall, Seaford. A speaker is booked for the evening, so the AGM will follow. It should be fairly brief as there won’t be any prize giving. This is of course all dependant on the COVID-19 situation. Please keep an eye on Seaford Scene, Facebook and also our website for further updates. Best Wishes, Sara (Chairman).

and February. Autumn sown ones will flower a few weeks earlier giving you a good display from June to September. Sew hardy annuals now, either directly into the ground or in seed trays. This will give you earlier flowers next year.

October is a good month for seed collection, splitting perennials, soft wood cuttings, taking cuttings from tender perennials, cleaning, sharpening and oiling tools. We always clean out and fumigate the greenhouse this month so it is ready to receive all the non-hardy plants and seedlings. Pressure hose or clean thoroughly throughout, and then light a fumigation candle and leave for at least 12 hours. Aideen and Denis Jones

With self-seeded produce you are never quite sure what you are going to get. Last month it was obvious that the green and swelling orbs in one of the raised beds in our garden at the Crouch was a squash of some kind, but towards the end of August we were delighted to have our hopes confirmed. Prolific pumpkins were turning an exuberant orange in time for Halloween. Indeed one got early promotion to the sales table after it was accidentally separated from its stalk. The neighbouring bed was hosting self-seeded tomatoes, and Katie tried trimming off excess foliage to give the fruits as much chance as possible to ripen, but just let’s say that the chutney makers among you should get a bonanza of green fruit. Herb specialist Bob is delighted with the summer’s growth. ‘It’s been a great season for herbs,’ he said, planting some yarrow into the bed. Katie added that it had been a good year for figs and apples too, with some of the apples ready for picking early last month and more likely for October. ‘A lot of people have been asking about the step-over apples,’ she said. ‘Now is the perfect time to put in orders for bare-rooted ones. Order now and you’ll get them ready for planting some time during the winter.’ And with that Katie hastened to the classroom to get on with doing the seed catalogue for next year’s veg.

Sadly coronavirus has meant that we haven’t been able to have groups of kids putting their mark on the children’s garden but it is being kept in tick-over order until these sessions can be resumed. And it boasted a wonderful display of sunflowers children had grown from seed. These children will grow up always knowing the garden but it’s not unusual for long-time residents to discover it for the first time, and have a delicious surprise. Indeed, only the other day we were delighted to welcome a lady who had lived in Seaford for 30 years and walked in for the first time, coming in with her mother who had just been permitted to leave her care home after months of shielding. Katie reported: ‘Her mother loved it so much because she so missed her own garden.’ So top of our to-do list goes maintenance of chairs and benches so people can come in and, if they wish, just sit and enjoy what Seaford Community Garden has to offer. The garden is currently open on Wednesday mornings from 10 until noon and on Saturday mornings at the same times during the produce season. So please visit for a tour or for just a sit-down in a sheltered spot in the sun, and enjoy it with us. The Garden Team Photos from top: We’re on a mission to label everything on the sales table; Crimson dahlia blooms expansively among the courgettes and self-seeded tomatoes; Self-seeded tomatoes which are ripening nicely; Come in and say hello on Wednesday mornings. seaford afternoon flower club The competition title for August was Sumer Fruits and for those of you who have been following the activities of our club members, I must first apologise for the error in last month’s Seaford Scene. The competition entitled Animal Magic was for the month of July, not August as stated, and our August competition was entitled Summer Fruits. This title obviously inspired several of our members to create an arrangement and some of the entries are pictured here. Probably the abundance of produce resulting from our splendid summer was the catalyst in encouraging many of our members to arrange the produce from their gardens (both flowers and fruits) and share the results with all of us.

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club Tristan da Cunha – the most remote, inhabited island in the world Laurie Holland has collected stamps, postal history and ephemera relating to Tristan for many years and has built up a deep understanding of its history and inhabitants – he even visited the islands with his wife and younger son in 2006 and stayed there for a week getting to know them ‘face to face’. This is a brief sample of his extensive collection. Why collect philatelic items from this very remote and sparsely populated British Overseas Territory of under 300 people which is half-way between South America and South Africa? Answer: I was intrigued by its history. Discovered in 1506, garrisoned by the British in 1816 with the first settlement established in 1817 (photo below). Tristan did not have its own stamps or even a post office until 1952 when over-printed St Helena stamps were issued. (photo below). Instead island

1932. (photo left). In 1961 the island was evacuated due to a volcanic eruption shown on this stamp of 1963 (photo right) and the return of the islanders in 1973 (photo below). Access to the island is still difficult and frequently rough seas make it impossible for ships to land. On my visit in 2006 we had to climb down rope netting from RMS St Helena onto a rib to get ashore. Why not call in and see us once the meetings recommence? On Your Marks, Get Set, Go…

As previously mentioned in our articles we have been unable to hold the planned Martello Half Marathon due to Covid 19, so not to miss out Martello Rotary organised a virtual ‘Run for Rotary Challenge’ during July. In a virtual run, runners can enter online, then decide when and where to complete an agreed distance, entering their time on the website on completion. Apart from an entry fee, competitors could also set up a web page for individual sponsorship from family and friends. Response was better than expected, with 55 runners

signing up for the event and raising between them over £2,000 in fees and donations for a number of charities. The biggest beneficiary was the We Only Live Once (WOLO) charity, a local Seaford charity set up to help the families of cancer victims, for which the event raised over £1,500. The success of this event has encouraged us to plan others, with a virtual Seaford Head 10k in October, a December Mince Pie 10 race, and a 10-mile race in collaboration with Seaford Striders. If you are interested please join us, even a couch potato like me was able to participate! Watch this space for joining details.

At last! The Station pictures are up... Due to Covid we have been unable to access the train station to put up the pictures prepared by local schools. We recently received permission from Southern Rail to work on the platform and we have now got

the pictures in place. We also managed to replant the flower boxes after the hot, dry summer. Thanks to the students and teachers at Cradle Hill, Alfriston and St John’s schools for all their efforts. Do let us know what you think of them and how we can improve.

Become a Friend of your local green spaces In the previous edition of Seaford Scene we wrote about ‘Focus on the Environment’ and that we were beginning a dialogue with Seaford residents who care for the open spaces that have been safeguarded in the recentlyapproved Seaford Local Plan. Some of these spaces already have support groups that have done outstanding work to enhance these ‘green lungs’ of the town, such as the East Blatchington Pond

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Conservation Society, and the Friends of the Brickfields. Martello Rotary is focusing now on encouraging support groups on 4 spaces in the town that do not yet have such a wide following. • Foster Close (runs beside Seaford Primary School) • The Ridings, Lexden Road • Normansal Park/Chalvington Fields • Grand Avenue bridleway/Princess Drive open space. In addition, there is interest in seeing the potential for enhancing the pond that sits beside South Hill Barn and receives the rainwater run-off from its roof. So far, we have a core group of 40 keen local volunteers who have signed up to being a ‘Friend’ for their local space within this group of five sites. This can involve: • noting the wildlife from a naturalist’s viewpoint, • valuing the space as a green corridor whilst exercising your dog, • enjoying seeing your children use the space, taking pressure off your home and/or garden, • enjoying the plant life that grows there through the seasons, • seeing what birds visit month by month.

Our role in Martello Rotary is to support these groups, help to keep the momentum going and help the group attract necessary financial support. Each group also has support from the Seaford Community Partnership which is working with Martello Rotary on this new initiative to give real purpose and life to each site’s new planning status. There is scope for helping these sites be ‘outdoor classrooms’ for the two schools that are close to three of them. This would be an extension of the ‘forest school’ concept as a means of giving the next generation an appreciation of these spaces. If you want to find out more, please contact Charlie Grimble who is taking the lead within Martello Rotary for this on cagrimble@gmail.com. Interested in Martello Rotary? And in the world of a nocturnal hunter, silence and stealth are everything. Special serrated feathers slice the air, allowing it to fly as silently as a phantom and aerially ambush its victims. Incredible hearing achieved by asymmetrical ears allows them to accurately pinpoint the rustle of a nervous vole below. They can hear fear.

But stand in the woods on a moonlit night and listen for an unseen owl’s ethereal call. It’s an ancient, unnerving sound that still speaks to something buried deep within us and ignites a primeval fear. The Tawny Owl is the largest and commonest of our island’s five owl species, typically nesting in holes in old trees in our remaining woodlands. But what is it about this bird that has given us the creeps throughout history? Let’s start with those huge, lifeless black eyes that seem to stare into your very soul. An owl’s eyes are not spherical but tubular like two telescopes and give amazing vision at low light levels. However, the eyes stretched shape and position on the owl’s face presents a narrow field of vision. To compensate, a Tawny Owl has special bones and blood vessels in its neck so it can perform that freaky, Exorcistlike head twist. This gives the bird the ability to scan all around without having to move its body and arouse detection by prey.

October the birds are at their most vocal. Of course, Tawny Owls really couldn’t give two hoots about scaring us but throughout history these spectral calls have provided a soundtrack to our deepest fears. In a society which is becoming increasingly detached from nature, it’s time to get out into the woods this Halloween and allow ourselves to be unsettled once again by these mystical birds.

OC T2

Once upon a time, we were terrified of Tawny Owls. They were a portent of evil in fairy tales, folklore and just about every scary story, film or poem that needed a creepy cliché. But in today’s crowded marketplace of international terrorism, climate change and saturated fats the owl’s powers to scare us are fading. Recently, it appears this spokesman of the supernatural has got itself a new publicist. Its modern image is one of a cuddly pin-up, more Harry Potter than Hammer Horror.

COMMUNITY ACTION TO CLEAR UP THE MOUTH OF THE CUCKMERE RIVER Concerned residents of Seaford have taken up the task of moving shingles from the mouth of the River Cuckmere in a bid to save the Cuckmere Haven after years of neglect by the Environmental Agency. Residents have set up a Facebook group asking for volunteers to move enough shingle and create a channel from the sea to the Cuckmere to allow the river to flow into the sea and vice versa.

of the Cuckmere river. By clearing enough shingle to create a channel to the sea we may help prevent a future occurrence.’

On Tuesday 18th August, brilliant progress was made with the help of some amazing volunteers, we moved enough shingles to create a very small channel,’ says Guy Denney the organiser and creator of the Facebook group. ‘A further and bigger event is planned for Saturday 22nd August from 11am to 4pm. I hope to see more residents turn up on Saturday’ he says. ‘Due to rainfall on Wednesday (19th August) the river is flowing as a one off, this does not do away with the need to move shingle away from the mouth of the Cuckmere and to create a channel from the river to the Sea as it is vital that the Cuckmere remains tidal’ explains Guy Denney. The Facebook group created by Guy Denney is called ‘The Cuckmere Clean Up’ https://www.facebook.com/ groups/2656616094579632 – within two days of its creation, it had over 270 members. According to Councillor Sam Adeniji ‘the Environment Agency’s refusal to dredge the mouth of the Cuckmere has meant that the meanders have dried up, and fish are dying due to a lack of oxygen in the river and a low water level, this poses a danger to wildlife and a health hazard to people. ‘Last winter due to heavy rainfall the Cuckmere meanders were completely flooded as a result of the Environment Agency’s refusal to de-shingle the mouth

Councillor Adeniji adds ‘Instead of being a magical meander, Cuckmere Haven now has an unpleasant smell. The efforts of local residents to take control of the situation led by Guy Denney puts the Environment Agency to shame, it shows that the people of Seaford are determined to save the Cuckmere.’ Photos from top: Cllr Adeniji, Guy Dunney and volunteers moving shingle; dead fish at Cuckmere.

Corelli Ensemble live at Seaford baptist church Covid-19 permitting, the Corelli Ensemble plans to put on two live concerts at Seaford Baptist Church on Sunday 8th November, 3pm and 5pm. This will be a very special event, not only because it features Vivaldi’s much loved Four Seasons, but also because it will (hopefully) be a live concert! Maeve Jenkinson, Musical Director of the Corelli Ensemble, will be the solo violinist, and Oonagh Barry will read the poems which precede each season, and explain a little about how Vivaldi has brilliantly depicted the poems through the music. Rest assured that we will take all necessary precautions to keep everyone safe, and will be limited to a socially distanced audience of just 54 people per performance. Tickets will not be sold at the door, but will only be available to purchase from the Corelli Ensemble website before the day of the concert. This will minimise queuing and avoid any exchanging of money. There will be a one-way system for entry and exit, and the audience will be required to wear face masks. Hand sanitizers will be available, and audience chairs will be disinfected after each concert. Sadly it will not be possible to serve refreshments after the concert. Seaford Baptist Church is very spacious and has good ventilation, however, we fully appreciate that there will be some members of our lovely audience who feel unable to attend in person. In order to make sure they are not

left out, we plan to film our concerts and live stream them via Zoom. As the Corelli Ensemble is only allowed 8 socially distanced people on the stage, our string orchestra will be slightly reduced in numbers, but certainly not in spirit! The Corelli Ensemble is all about bringing uplifting live Classical music to our lovely local audience, so do come along, or join us online, and enjoy the wonderful music of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, performed by the Corelli Ensemble with Maeve Jenkinson. Tickets for the concerts will be available from our website, corelliensemble.co.uk, costing £14 per person. If you wish to join us via Zoom, please contact us through our website, and pay £14 for a password which allows you to connect with the live concert. Seaford Town Council Declares Climate Emergency At its Full Council meeting Thursday 20th August, Seaford Town Council resolved to declare a Climate Emergency in order to identify this Town Council’s recognition of the climate and environment crisis facing the world. At an earlier meeting held in 2019, the Town Council created a Climate Change Working Party (CCWP) consisting of Town Councillors. CCWP was tasked with considering the climate change situation in Seaford and bringing forward recommendations for climate change actions/amelioration measures. CCWP presented a detailed report to Full Council on 20th August. The CCWP’s report recommended that the Town Council declare a Climate Emergency and highlighted key areas and ideas to support climate change in Seaford. Although the Town Council is currently unable to start any new projects until more is known about the direction of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Town Council’s recovery, the Town Council declaring a

What’s On Update Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many of the regular What’s On in Seaford events have been cancelled or postponed and are currently not listed on the What’s On pages (page 121). If you are planning on holding a ‘What’s On Monthly’ or ‘What’s On Weekly’ event/meeting in November, whether virtually, online or via social distancing, and would like the event listed in the next November Seaford Scene, please email: fran@seafordscene.co.uk, write to: Seaford Scene, 4th Floor, 60 Lansdowne Place, Hove BN3 1 FG, tel 01273 710793.

november issue deadline: wednesday 7th October

Climate Emergency is the first step towards supporting Seaford in raising awareness and making necessary changes. As soon as it is able, the Town Council will be reviewing its Strategic Objectives which form the skeleton of the Town Council’s plans over the coming years. When declaring the Climate Emergency, the Town Council agreed to create a Climate Change-specific Strategic Objective as part of this review where it hopes to include actions which will support the town in being more sustainable, environmentally aware and energy efficient. Until then, the CCWP will continue to research and work with community groups to prepare actions for this Strategic Objective, ready for consideration and adoption by the Town Council. Cllr Meek, Chair of the CCWP has said: ‘The CCWP is delighted that councillors unanimously voted for this declaration and I would like to thank my fellow councillors on the Working Party who put a lot of work and consultation into the report. There are voluntary groups forming in the town keen to work towards a sustainable future, such as SEA (the Seaford Environmental Alliance) and the Seaford Community Partnership linking with Martello Rotary Seaford to address resilience, and it is so important that Seaford Town Council and the community come together with these groups so that as a town we can do whatever we can to help solve this world situation which will affect us all.’

CONCENTUS CATCH-UP You will be pleased to hear that Concentus is alive and kicking! Although they have not yet met in person for rehearsals since shortly before Lockdown started, strenuous efforts have been made to keep the choir community in touch and functioning. Committee members have used great ingenuity, skill and a lot of hard work to support members in these strange times, keeping the friendly, caring spirit of the choir alive. At the start of Lockdown, a telephone cascade was initiated, so that every member was contacted several times ensuring support towards any help they might need and providing a friendly person to connect with. Right from the start of this period Adrian White, Musical Director, encouraged members by looking ahead with anticipation of lockdown affects eventually lessening. This involved setting out goals to aim for and providing structure to ensure the choir would be in good shape when circumstances allowed them to rehearse and perform together again. In March, Adrian embarked on a series of emailed newsletters, ‘Chorusing Weakly’ to keep members informed of general choir matters. Space was also included for people to describe what new things they were achieving in all that spare time! Unfortunately, choir engagements throughout the summer had to be cancelled including the choir’s biannual dinner, the Hippodrome concert with Paul Potts, Concentus’ two Summer concerts, the choir’s annual BBQ, and various singing engagements supporting local outside events. However Adrian refocused members sights in anticipating starting physical rehearsals again in September (should this be possible) and also devised the programme for the Christmas concerts. Luckily for all he always included some of his (in)famous jokes! Music for the Christmas concert pieces was sent by email to members, and Lou Soper (Assistant Musical Director) and Jo Fowler (Assistant Conductor) made, then posted/personally delivered the practice CDs to members, enabling them to start familiarising themselves with the music at home. Behind the scenes plans were afoot to develop a trial ‘pilot’ scheme to enable choir members to rehearse online! Jo (very conversant with all things digital) and Lou investigated the scope of Zoom and sent out joining instructions to members. They organised two online meetings to help members set-up

120

the IT equipment, with several internet-savvy people providing online and telephone support in assisting Zoom beginners. Shortly afterwards, Concentus piloted bi-weekly ‘Zoom’ rehearsals, interspersed with bi-weekly ‘social’ meetings. Adrian kept members up-to-date each week on choir matters at the beginning of each Zoom meeting. Jo and Lou widened the scope of the Zoom pilot study in exploring the ability for the four voice range groups to split off into separate ‘rooms’ to rehearse before coming back together for combined singing, while their latest refinement has improved the delivery of the backing music enormously. The committee is now seeking funding opportunities to help expand the scheme to take these virtual singing sessions out into the community. The purpose is to encourage non choir members to explore the social, health, mental and well-being supportive benefits that can be gained in counteracting the negative experiences of loneliness and isolation that so many suffered due to the effects of Lockdown. This will encourage the wider community to try something new and experience the ‘feel-good’ factors that come from the joys of singing together, whilst remaining in the safety of their own homes with our IT and musical direction teams providing full supporting mechanisms behind them! Friendship groups within the choir have used phone and internet to remain in touch with each other and once groups were allowed to meet outside again, the varying ‘coffee groups’ then met in person; albeit in smaller numbers than usual and abiding with social distancing requirements! Adrian is working towards the choir being able to meet and rehearse safely before too long, so that Concentus is able to perform their Christmas music in some guise or another, or at least be able to sing outside to support local Christmas events. However as changing circumstances evolve, Adrian and the committee will strive to ensure that Concentus will return with increased energy and enthusiasm in taking their collective singing forward into the future! Watch out for further announcements about singing and community involvement developments on social media, in the press and of course on our website: www.concentus-sings.com.
