Seaford’s Civic Awards Announced

to the May issue of Seaford Scene, At the time of writing we are starting to move forwards towards normality again – restrictions are lifting, shops and businesses are re-opening, meeting up with friends and family is allowed and travelling further afield is permitted. What a relief! Remember however, we must still continue to stay safe by socially distancing, wearing face masks and washing our hands regularly. We’re certainly not out of the woods yet! Talking of woods, in this issue we have news from Trees for Seaford (page 6) plus an update from East Blatchington Pond Society (page 68). We have gardening articles – How Does your Garden grow? on page 108, Seaford Community Garden on page 100 plus info and gardening tips from Seaford & District Horticultural Society on page 98. Hooray...Seaford Museum will hopefully be opening it’s doors again this month (page 20) and Seaford Little Theatre is getting ready to lift its curtain for the summer production in July on page 45. Turning to Seaford’s history, find out which ships have been washed up on Seaford Beach over the years on page 31 and who’s been leaving footprints across Seaford on page 12 – fascinating stuff! Oh, and don’t miss Seaford Town Council’s Civic Awards announcement on page 4, plus their own award on page 114. Enjoy your bank holidays this month and your May issue. Stay safe and well.

Seaford’s Civic Awards Announced Seaford Town Council is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2020-2021 Civic Awards, chosen by the Mayor and Young Mayor of Seaford Each year, Seaford Town Council, through its Civic Awards, recognises the contributions of local individuals and groups to the betterment of the town and the local community. The Civic Awards recognise members of the community who have made their mark on Seaford, whether this be working selflessly for others in the community, bringing credit or positivity to the town, going above and beyond their duties (whether voluntary or paid) or displaying great bravery in the face of adversity. The Town Council is pleased to announce the following awards and commendations for 2020/21: Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team (SVET) Volunteers and Management Committee for ‘Health Promotion’ including running, walking, healthy eating and conversations that help overcome isolation. Claire Sumners, representing Plastic Free Seaford for ‘Sustainability’ including minimising the use of water, energy pollution prevention and control and ‘greening initiatives’. Peter Tattam, representing Cycling Without Age (the Tri-shaws Project) for ‘Intergenerational Activities’ promoting relationships between older and younger residents of Seaford. The Don Mabey Award 2020/21. This prestigious Award has been received by Clare Davis, President of the Seaford Chamber of Commerce for outstanding services to the town – this year promoting business, community and tourism. Her nomination states ‘we are all aware the Travel Industry has been severely hit with all overseas travel being cancelled. Clare runs a travel agency franchise, and the pandemic increased her workload significantly. Whilst also working nights in Sainsburys, Clare spearheaded Seaford Chamber of Commerce, ensuring the smooth running of the Chamber and helping fellow members through the current situation. Clare has inspired us with her “can do” attitude and deserves recognition for this’. The Don Mabey Award was introduced in 2014 in memory of

4

Don Mabey MBE, a Freeman of the Town and known to many for the significant work he did for the town and our organisations. ‘Highly Commended Certificates’ have been awarded to: Cedrick Trenfield of the Blatchington Pond – his nominators write ‘we have lived in Seaford for 50 years and during that time the pond has been looked after by Mr Trenfield and his team. He has kept it in very good order, providing a safe place where parents can relax, watch their children play and feed the ducks’. Dawn Woodgate of the Seahaven Storehouse (Foodbank) – nominated for going above and beyond, not just throughout the pandemic but for a considerable time before that! Indefatigable work to aid the community. Hilary Miflin, Ben Miflin and Tim Chappels – nominated because during the summer of the pandemic, they maintained the Beach Garden and the Sunken Garden for the pleasure of visitors and residents. Normally the garden would be weeded and planted by a group of volunteers assisted by contractors. Thanks to their work the Garden has been a splash of colour to cheer us up during lockdowns. Lara Hague, Year 11 Pupil at Seaford Head School – nominated for the work she did for sustainability and the eco club. She championed the recycling project, organising a group of students to go and sort through the bins to ensure they were not contaminating the recycling waste, and teaching the younger students how to recycle and the importance of recycling. Sussex Volunteer Crafters – nominated for having the community at heart by organising the non-stop crafting of masks, scrubs and gowns. The group has a wide range of people with a diverse range of talents, crafting a wide range of materials with recycling fully on their minds. Simon Lambert, Head Greenkeeper at Seaford Head Golf Course – his nominator writes, ‘Simon has worked immensely hard over the years on the ecological side of managing the Golf Course, he was invaluable in the Town Council’s Operation Pollinator status and putting in of the borehole to enable the watering of the course using run-off water, and he continues to plan and manage wildflower areas’.

Young Mayor’s Award 2020/21 is awarded to: Isabelle Ireland Age 9, for raising money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice after she sadly lost her Grandad. She’s been such an inspiration and raised an outstanding amount of money, over £1,600 so far! Highly Commended Young Mayor’s Certificate awarded to: Gabrielle Ripley Bond of Chyngton School for preparing and donating hampers for NHS staff in local hospitals and to Key Worker Staff at School to thank them for their hard work during the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, Gabrielle has been supporting the community through ‘Surviving the Streets’ in her efforts to help people who are homeless. Congratulations to all Award recipients and thank you for all your continued hard work for our community.

Trees for Seaford

Trees for Birds

Lots of birds rely on trees, for nesting, for cover, for roosting, and for food. We may not have many woodlands in Seaford, but there are still a lot of woodland birds around.

Recently I caught the unmistakeable drumming sound of a woodpecker (probably great spotted) in Alfriston road, in the tall trees opposite the Last Wood. I also spotted a green woodpecker a few times near the Coastguard’s cottages, or the path between Hope Gap and the Barn. It has an unmistakeable ‘yaffle’ of a call, hence its nickname! At the Seaford nature reserve, up the hill near the old trenches, I was delighted to spot a jay out in the open. Jays are normally quite shy woodland birds, and well known for stashing hundreds of acorns, which sometimes end up growing into oak trees. Continuing my walk along the old Chyngton lane, I was delighted to spot a goldcrest, that was far more interested in searching the hedge for insects, than it was bothered about me. These tiny birds are usually found in coniferous woodland or in parks with mature trees, but in the winter you may spot them in other habitats such as hedges looking for tiny morsels such as spiders, other insects and moth eggs. What a stunning little bird it is. If you have space in your garden, it’s well worth getting a tree to encourage birds and other creatures. There are trees for all sizes of gardens, for example some crab apple trees only grow to a few metres high, and will still bring blossom and welcome fruit to your garden. There are some good ideas for native trees to attract wildlife on the Woodland Trust website. https://

6

www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/ blog/2019/03/british-treesto-plant-in-your-garden/ In my windswept garden, my small crab apple tree doesn’t grow all that well, but still the birds love it. They spend a lot of time perched in it, in between darting to the bird feeder, or bird bath. If you put food out for the birds, they will prefer having the cover of trees or shrubs near the feeders. I find that even a trellis to perch on is appreciated, and this can have climbers such as clematis, honeysuckle or ivy climbing up it, for extra benefit for wildlife. Even shrubs in pots, are worth a try, if you struggle to encourage birds into your garden. In the absence of trees and their cavities, some birds will happily nest in bird boxes, and it can be wonderfully entertaining watching them raising a brood. Birds such as blue tits, great tits and sparrows are likely to take up residence in a box with a small hole. Other birds such as robins prefer an open-fronted box. Tree planter Margery was delighted to spot the first bird’s nest in one of the trees planted in Chyngton Avenue, a couple of years ago. Trees for Seaford has planted over 1,400 trees in Seaford, and has plans for lots more! Do get in touch if you would like to join our regular volunteer team. Experience is not essential, as training can be given. If you and your neighbours would like to see more trees in your street, do get in touch. If you have added trees or other flowering plants to your own garden to encourage wildlife, do log your space with the ‘Metre Square for Wildlife’ site. So far over 2000 square metres have been pledged in Seaford! https://www.seafuture.org/a-metre-square-for-wildlife/ https://treesforseaford.wordpress.com/ Photos from top: Goldcrest; Green woodpecker; Jay.

Down at heel Exercise walks or runs by the sea have never been more popular than during Lockdown – and will probably long outlast it. South Hill (February issue, page 52) is a popular start of local walks. Chief Seattle apocryphally once remarked ‘Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints’. The American engineers that laid the busy tank road to South Hill certainly left their prints (about size 10 boots, photo right). Not to be outdone, at Tide Mills, on the opposite side of Seaford, there is a slightly younger hand print (photo below) at the end of another tank road popular with walkers. Earlier this year, the cold winter weather opened up potholes on our tarmacked roads, like every year on the popular Bishopstone Road (photo below). In comparison, nearly eight decades later, the concrete surface of the tank roads is more or less intact. Some roads laid by Roman engineers lasted a millenium or more, and it remains to be seen if concrete proves as durable as stone. Some walkers have gone a step further and left their footwear instead. Old rotary shoe heels sometimes wash up alongside lost fishing gear on the beach (issue 162, October 2020, page 30). Unexpectedly on such mundane items, various patterns and even inscriptions can be seen. The original six-pointed star design (photo left) was patented in

12

the USA by Jan Van Melle ninety-nine years ago. Other manufacturers therefore had to use different designs. While rubber heels can accidentally pop off on our beaches, other visitors have lost or left entire shoes. An unusual find after the spring gales was a pegged sole (photo right), which can be seen more easily on the detched heel (photo left, twenty pence for scale). Relying on small wooden pegs instead of nails or thread takes shoes back a couple of centuries. It made sense in a damp coastal environment to use wooden pegs, where cotton thread and iron hobnails were equally perishable. Probably a safer option too if worn in the town battery and windmill at Sutton which contained gunpowder and flour respectively. And easier to DIY repair if you could not afford new shoes during the Depression, in the decade following Van Melle’s patent. Our final sea-worn find evidently wore chunky shoes and had an animal curled around her foot (photo right) – made of ball clay which was used in cottage industries as far back as Roman times and more famously in smoking artefacts – hence called a pipe clay. Although the head is missing, she probably had a head cover, as part of a moulded hood is on her back. Who is she? The national clay pipe society is stumped. No, not Anne Boleyn nor Jane Grey! Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Seaford Photographic Society Earlier in the year we had a go at entering the GB Cup, a national competition open to photographic clubs from all over the UK. All SPS members were given the opportunity to contribute and we ended up submitting 32 images, from 9 different photographers. Of the 120 clubs who entered, we came 62nd, which is really quite an achievement for such a small club, so well done to everyone who entered. Particular congratulations to Chris Dawson who scored the club’s only 13 (meaning at least one of the judges gave it the maximum 5/5). We had a surprising 35 entries for our first ever club Triptych competition and it was great to see so many people having a go. Sue Clark LRPS CPAGB AWPF did a fine job in carrying out the judging duties. Congratulations to Heather Roberts for taking the first prize with ‘Guitar Triptych’ (photo below) and Steve

Hewitt who took the second place prize with ‘Westerly Wind Prevails’ (photo above). Third place went to Simon Watkins. All this year’s competitions for prints had to be cancelled because of Covid so we changed the Print League into a Second League for PDIs (Projected Digital Images). Well done to Simon Rigby and David Nickalls (Green Door, top photo) in the Standard Group; and to Colin Mitchell, Thelma Long and Simon Watkins (Kingfisher with Perch, opposite, middle photo) in the Advanced Group, who all scored the maximum 20/20 in the first round. Judging was carried out by Gerald Kityakara LRPS.

Brighton Craft are taking over the Cuckmere Room in Seaford’s Crypt Gallery for the whole of May for their exhibition ‘Beyond & Above II’. This will feature 13 artists and makers from across Sussex, and Seaford Photographic Society is pleased to have been invited to exhibit. We will have some of our work on display as well as a selection of mounted photographic prints for sale. We had another excellent turnout for Round 2 of the second PDI League competition, with 60 images entered, judged by Paul Parkinson LRPS CPAGB BPE1*. Members particularly appreciated Paul’s advice on how some of the images could be improved, for example by slightly different cropping. Anna-Marie Armstrong continued her run of successes in the Standard Group, scoring two 20s. In the Advanced Group Janice Hewitt, Simon Watkins and Chris Dawson (Two Trees and a Sheep, photo above) also scored 20s. We hope to re-start our outdoor photography meet-ups as soon as we are allowed, so do stop and say hello if you see us out and about. As always you will find lots of details about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including larger versions of all the competition-winning photos, members’ galleries, programme of events, latest news, and contact details.

Seaford Museum & Heritage Society

Reopening the Museum – we hope!

When the first Yellow Jack was raised above the Martello Tower last March to denote ‘quarantine’, little did we realise that we would have to buy a number of replacements as, one by one they were shredded by the infamous Seaford winds. Now, after too many weeks and months closed, we hope to haul down the yellow flag again and to reopen Seaford Museum in the Martello Tower on Wednesday 19th May. For the summer months, we will be open on Wednesdays from 2 to 4pm, and Saturdays and Sundays (and Bank Holidays) from 11am to 4pm. We value everyone’s support and encouragement, so please come along to visit us again. We are sure that visitors will understand and accept the restrictions of access to some of the exhibits and the one-way route around the Museum that will have to remain in place for the foreseeable future. In August last year we reported that the Edwardian village shop display in the Museum was having to be dismantled and renovated completely because of water damage seeping through from the Esplanade walkway above. The Museum’s ‘Heavy Gang’ of artisans and workers had already set to work on the rebuild. Thankfully, most of the exhibits – everything you would have seen in an Edwardian shop – were largely undamaged, but the structure of the shop needed replacing completely and work commenced. Tragically, one of the Gang would not be around to see the finish of the project. Tony Lamberth passed away quite suddenly in September 2020. Tony had been a stalwart of the Museum for many years, contributing countless hours of work and expertise, and he and Brian Early had been the principal workers on the project. Without Tony, the rest of the Heavy Gang rallied round and work has continued. Tony was also actively involved in many local activities including kayaking and the Seaford Rugby Club, and is greatly missed by all. At the end of March, at the Annual General Meeting of the Seaford Museum and Heritage Society which

20

runs the Museum, it was unanimously agreed that the rebuilt shop should be named ‘Lamberth & Early’ in recognition of their efforts. The work on the Edwardian shop will continue apace while the Museum remains closed and, hopefully, will be completed and ready when the Museum reopens to visitors. Come along and see the hard work! Photo: Hopefully this will be the last Yellow Jack flag to be shredded by the Seaford winds!

In memory of Gloria Roberts Gloria Roberts (formerly Tucknott, née Bray) passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in March. She was the last surviving founder member of Seaford Dramatic Society, now Seaford Little Theatre. She became a Seaford resident in 1926 when her photographer father opened a studio in Clinton Place and moved the family to Seaford. Her involvement in the Theatre started at the war’s end in 1945 when it was still Seaford Operatic and Dramatic Society, and even appeared on the stage at Glyndebourne with the company in 1946 with their first production At Mrs Beams. Gloria regularly performed on stage until 1957 and was noted for her love of character parts, particularly displaying her natural ability with accents, which never left her.

She worked at the tax office, was married and widowed twice, brought up a family, ran a guest house, and worked as an office administrator for several local businesses. She served as honorary treasurer for the Seaford British Legion Club and also continued to support the Theatre. Gloria had returned to the stage in 1978 in the production Stranger in the Tea where she played Lottie Grossbeck, the German housekeeper, and continued to perform until she was 80. This was in 2005 in Waiting in the Wings during which she had her first mini stroke (TIA). After this Gloria continued to support the theatre by serving refreshments and selling programmes. She was a member of Seaford Evening Flower Club and the Horticultural Society for many years, and loved tending to her roses. Gloria was also an avid supporter of Seaford Film Society where she loved helping with refreshments. She also loved watercolour flower painting and attended St James’ afternoon craft club regularly. Gloria is survived by her much loved family and friends, and the theatre that she co-founded.

Shipwrecks in Seaford Bay The Nympha Americana was wrecked at Crowlink in 1747, much to the benefit of the local population. The history of wrecks seems to attract less attention than smuggling, but this event is recorded in a new pamphlet about wrecks available from Seaford Museum. And there are some 200 known wrecks in Seaford Bay. In the 1970s weekend sub-aqua enthusiasts often brought up cannon and anchors which came to the Museum’s former home in Pelham Road for cleaning and temporary storage. In the last 50 years there have been three ‘groundings’ in the Bay, and all were refloated successfully, with no loss of life. The first was Walter Richter in February 1972. When it came ashore on Tidemills late at night, the Newhaven lifeboat Kathleen Mary made valiant attempts in the storm to launch lines to the ship but they went into the sea. Coastguards ashore, despite their floodlighting failing, got a breeches buoy line aboard, and the sixstrong crew were brought ashore. As volunteers on the rope, a friend and I got pulled into the surf each time a crew member came ashore! Walter Richter, although much smaller than the celebrated Athena B which sat on Brighton Beach for a month in 1980, attracted a lot of sightseers for the month it was ashore. Two Dover-based German ocean-going tugs, Danzig and Hermes, failed to haul it off. Newhaven firm Metrec, having dug a channel through the shingle, and using a winch and their tiny tug Mallard, turned the stricken vessel and towed it afloat. It was largely unscathed.

In December 1988 the Belgian trawler White Horse came ashore opposite the Buckle Inn. It also attracted the crowds but was not there for long before being refloated. Ten years later, a Dutch sail-training vessel Eendracht suffered engine failure after leaving Newhaven and was washed broadside onto Tidemills Beach. The helicopter bringing the mainly-young crew of 51 ashore was filmed by local TV. Eendracht was quickly refloated. Mercifully no fatalities occurred, but these events remind us of the power of the sea, and other losses which have been more tragic. It is worth remembering that Newhaven Lifeboat, despite the loss of 12 months of fundraising events, is still there to respond to emergencies, and that it’s only a 999 call for the Coastguard to mobilise the rescue services. Seaford Rotary

Bluebell Walk, Arlington

Following the closure due to the lockdown, the Bluebell Walk at Arlington opened from 12th April. Seaford Rotary supported the walk by manning the entrance gate and payment point on 22nd and 23rd April and will also be doing so on Tuesday 18th May. Seaford Rotary will receive a donation from the farmer based on the number of visitors each day. The number of visitors will however be limited and unlike previous years there will be no refreshments available. Tickets from 10am – 4pm (last entry 4pm) may be pre-booked online only at https://www.bluebellwalk.co.uk. All payments will be contactless. On a circular walk of 800 metres or half a mile in Beatons Wood, suitable for wheelchair users, you may see white anemones followed by the vistas of bluebells, established over centuries. On this walk there are seats for you to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this oak and hornbeam ancient wood. Along the walks there are signs illustrating the flora and fauna of the countryside for your information. There will be no mobility scooters available this year due to the COVID restrictions. So, if you missed the opportunity to come along in April to see the wonderful vista of bluebells whilst also supporting Seaford Rotary, please come along on Tuesday 18th May. All money donated to Seaford Rotary will be used to support charitable causes.

Over the Rainbow Walk:

To take part in the Over the Rainbow Fancy Dress walk, all walkers should be aware that entries are required to be secured by registering to take part before the registration deadline of 17th May. The number of teams taking part will be strictly

34

limited. Sponsorship for your charity may begin as soon as you register. The earlier that teams of wouldbe walkers register, the greater will be the fundraising opportunities. Seaford Rotary wishes to see colourfully dressed charity groups and family teams of up to six walking from Splash Point to Seaford Sailing Club and back. Individual walkers, pairs, and groups of less than six can also join this fun-themed event. Each group of walkers will start at defined times at 5-minute intervals during the afternoon. For full walk details and a registration form please email rainbowwalk@seafordrotary.org.uk. Note that this email address is different from that previously advertised.

Bansang Hospital – an update

Seaford Rotary is pleased to have supported the Bansang Hospital Appeal (BHA) for many years and has recently agreed to contribute to the cost of the refurbishment of the final dilapidated staff accommodation unit of four into housing for doctors and their families. Bansang is the location for the only government hospital in the interior of The Gambia. The hospital, built by the British and opened in 1938, has a catchment of around 600,000 people. The Gambia, surrounded to the north, east, and south by Senegal is no more than 30 miles wide north to south and stretches about 300 miles eastwards from the Atlantic Ocean. As you travel away from the coast, the country becomes less developed, and around Bansang, a town about 200 miles from the coast, it is totally rural and undeveloped. Anita Smith MBE MRG, founder, and Director of the Bansang Hospital Appeal (BHA) came across the hospital in 1992. Since its opening there had been no improvements and only basic maintenance. How did Anita find the hospital? Despite asking more than once, the only answer has been ‘exploring’. Since then, she has devoted her life to improving the hospital with remarkable results. It is now considered to be one of the most advanced hospitals in sub-Sahara west Africa. The most recently completed project was refurbishment of the enormous 80-bed Children’s

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Unit. The first phase at a cost of £19,000 replaced cardboard ceilings with plaster ceilings throughout, greatly reducing heat ingress from the roof void. All electrics, lighting and ceiling fans were replaced with low energy alternatives. The second phase was the Surgical Ward, cost £21,558 with new flooring, wall tiling to bed height, new patient and staff showers and toilets. The newly installed aluminium partitioning now offers greater infection control measures, privacy for the 6-bed ICU, a 6-bed Burns Unit and a large separate dressings bay. Throughout the department there are now stainless-steel sinks and taps set in fully tiled surrounds. The third phase, the subject of the 2019 Christmas appeal, cost £20,558. This proved to be the toughest challenge of all due to Covid-19. Delays were inevitable as the country had imposed emergency lockdown measures. It was difficult for both staff and patients as they adapted to being moved around the rebuilding work. The resourceful staff, knowing that the result would be so beneficial, carried on providing the best possible care. There is now a tiled Malnutrition Ward, Premature Baby Ward, Neonatal Ward, ICU Ward,

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Unit among other specialist areas, together with staff room, solar battery room and medical storeroom. This full Children’s Unit was open and fully operational on 20th August 2020. The latest project, the subject of the 2020 Christmas appeal, has been the refurbishment of 4 dilapidated units into units for housing doctors and their families. Providing staff accommodation has been a key feature of BHA’s programme for many years. Over 60 accommodation units have been provided and this has been key to achieving the remarkable staff retention of over 95%. The first unit of the 4 is occupied, the second is now ready for occupation, the third is fully funded. Seaford Rotary is pleased to have contributed to the cost of the final unit. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members. For more information contact us on http://www. seafordrotary.org.uk/contact.php. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Health Foundation’s annual Mental Health Awareness Week and the Foundation is clear that: ‘Making art can enable people to take greater responsibility for their own health and wellbeing by helping maintain levels of independency and curiosity, and improve the quality of life by bringing greater joy.’ And so to The Crypt’s May Challenge.

So what did you do to get through it? The Crypt May Challenge No doubt about it, the past 14 months have been tough but, on the plus side, being stuck at home has encouraged lots of us to actually spend some (more) time doing things we have been wanting to do for ages but just never got around to: emulating Tom Daley and knitting everyone a jumper; having our own personal bake-off at home; being inspired by Grayson Perry to find those old paint brushes and go for it; making collages out of the growing pile of chocolate wrappers; finding comfort in mud, seeds and the watering can, and more. However, by the time you leaf through this magazine, we should be (fingers crossed) slowly easing our way back to some form of normality. It may not be the same normality of pre-March 2020, we may not be feeling the same about normality – or even feeling normal, but, nonetheless, it’s some kind of rearranged strange new normality which surrounds us. But does that mean you have to stop doing all those wonderful new things you found kept you sane? Of course not! In fact, May is the month for The Mental

Whatever it was that kept you going through Lockdown, and whatever it still is, the Crypt wants to know. But, of course, we don’t want you to send us an email or postcard with a couple of words jotted down. Oh no! The May Challenge is to send us an artwork using any medium, in either two dimensions or three, which captures what you got up to to keep you happy, to relax or just to keep you from climbing the walls day-to-day during Lockdown. The challenge, as always, is divided into two age groups, children and adults, with a prize for each age group, and the closing date is 26th May. Seaford Little Theatre At last! Seaford Little Theatre is delighted to be able to tell you that we are re-opening in time for the summer production.

you know when the box office is open, and now you can book online too – follow the link on the theatre’s website. After Mixed Doubles we hope to stage our everpopular musical revue with Graham Tubb at the helm. This should take place at the end of August and a good time will be had by all. And then comes a Christmas treat. Our November production will be Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious Season’s Greetings. What happens when families get together for a Christmas house party? You’ll have to come along to the Little Theatre to find out, but we can promise you a thoroughly entertaining evening’s entertainment.

It has been a sad year and we have missed our lovely Seaford audiences more than we can say, but now we can look forward to presenting the very funny and thought-provoking Mixed Doubles at the end of July. Mixed Doubles is a series of very short playlets charting the ups and downs of marriage. They will be great fun to rehearse and even more fun to put in front of an audience. So do be ready to book your seats a few weeks before – we’ll make sure to let

For those of you who would like to involve yourselves with the theatre, either onstage or backstage/front of house please get in touch with the Membership Secretary at the theatre (4 Steyne Road, BN25 1HA) or by email memsec@seafordlittletheatre.co.uk to either renew or take out new membership. There is a membership application form on our website and membership costs just £10 each year (students £5).

We can’t wait to open and see you all again soon!

Sussex Wildlife Trust

Searching for extinct animals

A wonderful museum lurks unassumingly on Brighton’s Dyke Road, the tree-lined residential avenue that connects the city to the rolling chalk hills of the South Downs. It was here, in the illuminated cabinets and cases of The Booth Museum of Natural History that my story started. A display of the bones, eggs, fur and feathers of extinct animals reconnected me with my childhood obsession with lost species. It was the starting point for a journey which led me deep into the caves of New Zealand looking for the bones of the mighty extinct Moa – birds which stood over 12 feet tall. I hike mountain ranges in search of the South Island Kōkako, a bird known as the ‘Grey Ghost’; which some believe may still exist. In San Francisco I seek the remaining sand dunes where the diminutive Xerces Blue butterfly once flew and in a dimly lit museum storeroom, I am a granted an audience with the holiest of extinct relics – the

mummified head of the legendary Dodo. Although my quest leads me to Copenhagen, Helsinki, Paris and New York I was surprised to find that, if I was searching for extinct animals, there was a story right on my doorstep. Sussex was the last known whereabouts of Ivell’s Sea Anemone, declared extinct in 1997. This delicate creature once existed in Widewater Lagoon near Shoreham and is known from nowhere else on the planet. Widewater’s faded information panel contains a drawing of this mythical beast. Grey and tubular, the illustration resembles a section of somebody’s small intestine or a really long sock with wiry tentacles poking out of one end. I headed off in search of the only remaining specimens of this species, stored deep in the basement of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Here I was handed a jar with a domed glass stopper. Inside the jar was a solution of 75% ethanol and floating in that ethanol was …nothing. I put on my glasses and raised the jar up to the storeroom’s light bulb and only then could I make out the anemone, a miniscule, thin squiggle suspended in the solution. After giant Moa bones and mummified Dodos, there was no disguising my disappointment. I had harboured a hope that maybe I could be the man to gallantly re-discover Ivell’s Sea Anemone in Widewater lagoon. The fact that I couldn’t re-discover it in a jar two inches from my face didn’t inspire me with confidence. Undaunted, I carried on my quest and, armed with a snorkel, a faulty torch and an inflatable lilo in the shape of crocodile I bravely waded into Widewater. You’ll find the rest of this story and many more of my adventures in my new book Gone: A search for what remains of the world’s extinct creatures, published on 27th April and available in bookshops and online. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

A Good Read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owen

When a young man is found dead on the North Carolina coast the local police – and local residents – start looking for the culprit. It doesn’t take long before they turn their attention to Kya, also

Threeways Nursing Home

National Day of Reflection

On 23rd March (National Day of Reflection) the staff at Threeways Nursing Home remembered those residents who sadly lost their lives whilst battling Covid-19. A one-minute silence was held in the lounge and a balloon tower in memory of those residents was displayed. Money was raised on the day for Marie Curie.

known as the Marsh Girl. But is she guilty of anything more than being an outsider? What follows is actually two stories intertwined. As the hunt for the murderer continues we learn of Kya’s life in the marsh. At the age of 6 she watched Ma walk away from their shack with a blue case and high-heeled shoes. Though Kya waited, her mother never returned and over the following months her siblings left as well, leaving her alone with Pa. He was often drunk or absent, so it was up to Kya to survive, until he finally left when she was 10. To some extent, this is a coming-of-age story. It is an unforgettable novel; a celebration of nature and some of the most engaging parts are the descriptions of the marsh world through which Kya glides effortlessly in her canoe. It becomes a character in its own right. There is no denying that this novel will stay with you long after you finish it and feel as if you have been along the journey though the marsh with Kya.

A Good Day for Climbing Trees

by Jaco Jacobs

Don’t let anyone tell you that you are too young to take a stand. Sometimes all it takes is one simple, spur of the moment decision, to change your life for ever. Marnus is fed up. No one seems to notice him. His older brother acts as if he is in charge, and his younger brother seems to know everything. But a single knock on the door, a petition, and a tree under threat, will ensure that everyone notices him. This charming novel from one of South Africa’s most popular and prolific children’s authors will hook you in straight away. It will make you laugh and will make you think about grabbing those opportunities that life gives you. Willow Coby

Property Protection Trusts (PPTs) are by far one of the most common types of trusts included in wills. It is likely that many of you reading this now will own a home with your spouse, or a partner. It is also likely that for most of you, the home is your biggest asset. Therefore, there’s no doubt that you will want to look to protect your home and ensure that your share goes to who you want it to go to (more often than not your children). A Property Protection Trust is designed to take the deceased’s share in the home and give someone else (usually your spouse or partner) a life interest in the property which will give them the protection of living in the property for the remainder of their lifetime or earlier if the trust specifies i.e. remarriage. It also ensures that if the survivor requires long term care, at least half the property is preserved for the benefit of your beneficiaries. This trust ensures your beneficiaries are protected and eliminates any risk of sideways disinheritance – whereby the surviving partner remarries, and the house passes to their new spouse under the Will. The trust would be set up on the death of the first person. The legal title will then be transferred into the joint names of the surviving spouse/partner and the trustees. It is important to add here that a property cannot enter a life interest trust on death as until the mortgage has been settled, you are not seen to own the property. As a result, it is imperative to ensure that life cover is in place. The property must be held as tenants in common (TiC) to enter the trust. Holding the property as Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

tenants in common means that each owner holds a share of the home which can be gifted via your Will. If the property is held as joint tenants, the survivor would inherit by virtue of survivorship, regardless of what is in the deceased’s Will. A Property Protection Trust can also include powers to allow the life tenant to downsize and use the sale proceeds to purchase a substitute property to live in. The additional proceeds from the sale will remain in the trust and the life tenant can be paid an income from this. This can be useful where the life tenant may not be able to look after a large home as they grow older. Property Protection Trusts are a serious consideration for those who wish to protect their main asset. If you want to take the first step and get in contact with me, I can be reached on 01323 893 245 or by email at jamie@penrosewills.co.uk I look forward to speaking with you soon. Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni

A classic Italian supper

Preparation time: 10 min Cooking time: 1 hr 20 plus cooling Serves: 2-4

Ingredients

250g fresh egg lasagne sheets For the sauce 1 tbsp olive oil; 1 onion, peeled and cut in half; 1 carrot, cut in half lengthways;1 celery stick, cut in half; 800g tinned plum tomatoes; 1 small bunch basil; a splash of balsamic vinegar For the filling 250g fresh spinach; 1 tbsp butter; 1 small garlic clove, peeled and crushed; 175g fresh ricotta; 30g Italian hard cheese, grated; nutmeg

Method

Heat the olive oil in a wide pan over a medium heat, add the onion, carrot and celery, and fry for two minutes, until they start to brown. Add the tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinegar, bring everything to a simmer, then turn down the heat and cook gently for about 30 minutes, until thick. Remove the vegetables and herbs, then blend the sauce until fairly smooth, and season to taste. While the sauce is cooking, trim and discard any tough stalks from the spinach and wash the leaves well. Put the still-wet spinach into a saucepan over a medium heat, cover and cook, shaking the pan occasionally, until the spinach is completely wilted, then run under cold water to stop the cooking process. Once it’s cool enough to handle, squeeze until dry, then chop finely. Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat, add the garlic, cook for one minute, then add the spinach. Sauté to coat everything with the butter, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. Heat the oven to 200ºC (180ºC fan) / gas mark 6. Mix the ricotta and spinach and add most of the grated cheese, reserving some for the top, season the mixture well with nutmeg and salt.

Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

64

Pour a thick layer of tomato sauce into the bottom of a medium baking tin. Make a sausage shape of filling on the short end of one of the pasta squares and roll it up, until you have slight overlap. Put the filled tube seam side down in the baking dish, then repeat with the remaining pasta and filling. Pour the remaining sauce on top and bake for 30 minutes. Scatter the remaining grated cheese over the dish before serving and place under the grill until it bubbles.

East Blatchington Pond News The East Blatchington Pond Society was not able to publish and distribute its annual Newsletter last year, due to the pandemic. This is our normal method of keeping residents up to date and also fundraising for Pond maintenance. We will be producing a Newsletter this summer, we hope, but here is a short update in the interim. During the lockdowns, both last year and this year East Blatchington Pond has been a well-used and much appreciated open space. The Pond volunteers who work around the pond are part of the East Blatchington Pond Conservation Society, who as most readers will know, rescued the Pond back in 1980. Although the current Pond may look natural is it artificially re-created and lined – even the duck island with its willows is man-made. The Pond does require regular looking after and the volunteers have been working all year, every Saturday between 10am and 12 noon, in most weathers. Seaford Council’s contractors do basic maintenance like mowing the grass and tree felling – they recently had to remove a dangerous tree behind the Pond’s tool shed. Tasks like clearing silt out of the traps which collect runoff water from the roads, and the Pond itself, and planting and strimming the banks, are done by the volunteers. A number of local people have commented on the recent pollarding of the trees on the island, which was necessary as they had become too big and one had fallen into the water. They should regrow quite rapidly. The bullrushes and reeds are also managed to stop them taking over the Pond too much,

and the banks are kept trimmed so that wildflowers can grow, as well as the daffodils and other bulbs that have been planted over many years. The spring flower display is very colourful, and enjoyed by many visitors. The volunteers’ work is directed by Cedric Trenfield, our Pond Manager of many years, who now has two deputies on site. Cedric received an award for his work last year. Any volunteer is happy to answer or redirect questions about the work, and if you would like to join us as a volunteer please come down on a Saturday and say hello. We are committed to helping wildlife in and around the Pond and have created woodpiles and habitats for frogs, slow worms and insects. The Pond itself has some resident aliens which are often observed – lots of fish and terrapins who have been ‘released into the wild’! The terrapins certainly aren’t a native species, but cannot be legally removed, and can be seen sunning themselves on fine days. We now have a new website: www.eastblatchingtonpond.org and would love readers to visit it, to improve our Google search rating among other things! There is a lot of information about the Pond’s history, and photos of it now, and in the past. Our former webmaster Mick Barrett is now retiring and the new website has been built with his content. The Pond Society would like to thank him for all his generous work and hosting over the years. It is now possible to pay ‘subs’ or make a donation online via the new website’s donations page. The Society recently had a welcome donation from Pondsyde Court’s residents, and a new bench was generously donated by the Rumble family and is being much appreciated. Cycle Seahaven

Cycling Changed My Life

It’s been five years since I first signed up as a member of Cycle Seahaven and started following the club on Facebook when I noticed that they were putting on Beginners Rides. So I dusted off my aged bike and with some trepidation, cycled to the meeting point for the Beginners Ride, where I was warmly welcomed by ride leaders, Paul and Roger and we set off on my first cycle in decades. At the time I didn’t realise what a life-changing day that was to be and that my focus on Sunday mornings would never be the same again. I returned home so

elated that I then recruited friends to join me on the next Beginners Ride. I’ve been reflecting on my cycling journey with the club having recently cycled over 360 miles during March as part of a Cycle Seahaven challenge to get us all back out on our bikes after the long winter and Lockdown. Five years ago I could never have imagined myself, now 63 years old, being able to cycle so many miles, mostly off road and at the moment still on a manual bike, although I definitely have my eye on an e-bike in the not too distant future! Over the years my usual position on a club ride has been ‘Tail End Charlie’ bringing up the rear – but somebody has to do it! So five years and two bikes later, with many miles cycled, I’ve been encouraged and supported throughout by ride leaders, all with endless patience just wishing to share their passion for cycling. I’ve always loved walking on our beautiful South Downs, but through Cycle Seahaven I’ve learned of many cycle routes away from our busy roads which have enabled me to enjoy even more of the beautiful countryside we have right on our door step, plus I can now confidently cycle on the road when absolutely necessary! Most important, I’ve made many friends and am probably physically and mentally more fit than I have ever been thanks to being a member of Cycle Seahaven. So I thank everyone involved in running this incredibly friendly, fun and successful club, and suggest that you dust off your bike. Take it to Cycle Seahaven’s Dr Bike if it is in need of repair and give cycling a go as you too may never look back. Written by a member of Cycle Seahaven www.cycleseahaven.org.uk

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club

The Seaford and District Stamp Club a few years ago voted to amend its title to the Seaford and District Stamp and Postcard Club. This is because we hoped to encourage those collectors in the area who were more interested in postcards than stamps and postal history. Postcards, unlike stamps did not originate in this country. Austria started using stationery cards in 1872 and their use spread rapidly once the Universal Postal Union agreed their format in 1874. By the late 1880s chromo-lithographic printing processes were developed around Southern Germany which allowed ornate printing, including in colour, to be used. These developed in popularity on the Continent in the 1890s, together with a larger format than the court card format our own GPO permitted at the time. This developed into what collectors called the Gruss Aus type, meaning Greetings From in German. Illustrated (opposite top) is an early monochrome type

from Cervignano in Italy sent in 1897, and a multicolured card from Henhart in Austria posted in 1900. (image below). At this

time only the address was allowed on the back, so messages were written on or around the scene!

Sometimes cards were sent for general reasons, the French card right depicts a rustic scene of travellers on a cart, posted in 1901. The French for some reason often favoured placing the stamp on the ‘view’ side. Finally the German card (image left) posted in 1904 seems to be a joke with military connotations! By 1902 and the new monarch, the British GPO agreed to the larger postcard size and pressed for the ‘divided back’ format we know today. This allowed a full picture to be put on the subject side, and better photographic techniques by that date allowed real photos to be used. I think some of the charm of the early cards was lost though, do you agree?

Seaford u3a News Like other organisations u3a has been restricted during the Covid crisis by being unable to hold face to face meetings and events. This has been a difficulty but fortunately Seaford u3a has some clever computerbuffs who have been able to set up online events. The monthly coffee morning has continued via ZOOM and provides a meeting point for those members who can access the technology. This is enjoyed on average by about 25 members per month though they have to provide their own coffee and biscuits. Virtual biscuits just don’t taste the same! Members were online again for a talk in March. It’s surprising how little people know about the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 and 1919, so it was interesting to take part in an illustrated Zoom lecture by u3a member Dr Di Parkin, which explained the origin and horrifying death toll of this virus, with particular reference to the effect on Brighton. Di was part of Brighton group Spanish Flu in Brighton (https:// www.spanishfluinbrighton.co.uk) who researched the pandemic in 2019/20 and obtained contributions from people with family memories of that time. The first mention of a strange type of influenza came from the United States where it was identified in military personnel in April 1918. This was a time of war, with global troop movements and so the virus spread and caused at least 50 million deaths worldwide. There were important differences with the current pandemic as mortality mainly killed younger people and also of course, there were no vaccines. Seaford did not escape and the Commonwealth War Graves section of the cemetery on Alfriston Road includes those of Canadian soldiers who returned successfully from the war only to die from the virus. The second recent talk online was by Dr James Taylor MA (Hons), FRSA, expert on maritime art and former curator at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. His talk was entitled Ocean Liners and was generously illustrated with photos of famous liners, some of them showing the opulent interiors, and artwork produced at the time. The 1935 poster shown here was by the French graphic designer, Cassandre, and shows the French flagship Normandie which sailed in the same

era as the Queen Mary and vied with that ship to take and re-take the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing. The Normandie was fabulously furnished with the best French craftsmanship, including pillars in the dining room made by Lalique, but met a sad end in New York harbour when she caught fire whilst being refitted as a troop ship in 1942 and could not be salvaged. Dr Taylor started his talk with the Brunel-designed ships, Great Western, Great Britain and Great Eastern and also told of the Titanic and her sister ships the Lusitania and the Mauretania as well as going further through famous ships to the liner Queen Elizabeth 2 which was the last ocean liner designed for the transatlantic crossing. After that the cruise market became more popular. This is the third talk which Dr Taylor has done for Seaford u3a. Members have been well entertained by his professionalism and excellent illustrations. At Seaford u3a there will be a continuing programme as circumstances allow. Martello Rotary Seaford Martello is still busy supporting the community and this month’s update focuses on the environmental and the work that we are supporting both financially and with active participation, and some of the groups that we have financially supported. Trees for Seaford

Despite being hampered by Covid-19, Martello Rotary continues to work online with Trees for Seaford in their ongoing programme for planting trees around the town. While new planting will now have to wait until the autumn, the maintenance of trees planted over the past years and the surveying of the roads to decide on the location for new planting is now a priority. Environmental Survey

By the time you read this article, Seaford Community Partnership and Martello Rotary will be continuing to evaluate the results so far received for the survey which can still be found on the Facebook page called Martello Rotary Seaford. The survey can also be accessed directly on the website https://www. surveylegend.com/s/2znx. It is not too late to take part if you haven’t yet had your say. This is one result of the ongoing teamwork between the two organisations, to try to address both the need to mitigate the impact of climate change, and also to enhance the appearance of our townscape. It focuses on six of the Local Green Spaces protected by the Seaford Neighbourhood Plan by finding out how we can enhance their contribution to our wellbeing and enjoyment of our green heritage.

Community Grants

We are pleased to let you know that working in conjunction with Seaford Rotary we have given £500 to Seaford Little Theatre https://www. seafordlittletheatre.co.uk/ to help them improve their air conditioning system and £500 to Sailhaven, https://www.sailhaven.org/ a local organisation based in Seaford/Newhaven which is developing the infrastructure to help disadvantaged youngsters learn the skills and participate in sailing. If you are involved in a community group or working to help the community and need financial help, don’t forget we are here to support you if we can. Grants are available on a discretionary basis to support organisations and individuals that will be of community or environmental benefit, or aim to raise aspirations, engender community spirit, or assist those in local need. You can download Grant application forms from either of the two local Rotary web sites: martellorotary.org.uk. or seafordrotary.org.uk.

the Churches of St Thomas More and The Immaculate Conception of Our Lady As we all start to emerge from Lockdown, I am looking forward to welcoming everybody back to our churches in Seaford and Peacehaven, as social distancing and restrictions on gatherings are eased. This has been a very challenging time for us all, particularly for those parishioners who live alone, are housebound or struggling to cope with the demands of living under a pandemic. Many people have felt lonely or anxious, or are missing family and friends. Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, the churches have been open whenever possible, with limited access, throughout the pandemic. Unfortunately it was necessary to close the churches as precautionary measures earlier this year, although the introduction of a live streaming service from

WESTERLEIGH NURSING HOME

St Thomas More has allowed people to access Mass online by visiting the church’s website (details below). Although this large parish has tried hard throughout the past year to contact those who may be in need of support or just someone to talk to, I would like to develop a more established contact network throughout the parish. To do this, it is necessary to update the contact details (telephone numbers, email and home addresses) of our parishioners who normally attend the Seaford and Peacehaven churches. This would allow the Parish Pastoral team, my deacon Colin, and myself to more easily stay in touch with families and individuals, and also to offer support and help. If you are a parishioner or are interested in learning more about our churches, please contact Mary in the Seaford office or Lyndsey in the Peacehaven office. I look forward to seeing a full Church again soon at both our sites. Father Ian Byrnes

Enjoying food with dementia… Food, sharing meals and cooking are central to all of our lives, and here at Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, we cook our food daily, even baking cakes daily for afternoon tea. We all know that food is often linked to strong emotions. For some people cooking was their role in the family, which gave them purpose. It can be an essential part of a routine, but many people who have dementia struggle with cooking. Preparing even a simple meal requires remembering many steps and multitasking. Brain changes that occur in dementia often impair the mental abilities necessary for cooking. Moreover, dementia can damage taste and smell, making food preparation even more challenging. Difficulties with cooking will come on gradually and may be inconsistent. It can be difficult for both the individual with dementia and their family to know when and how help is needed.

Dealing with change in abilities

Many people with dementia can also be resistant to giving up cooking and to losing their role as chef in the family. It is especially difficult for them, as well as for the caregiver, to accept someone else taking over the role or to relying on pre-made food. These changes are a practical and emotional challenge for both the caregiver and the person with dementia. While it won’t erase the changes taking place, the caregiver is helped by acknowledging the loss and finding strategies to moderate the emotional impact of the changes in someone’s ability to participate in preparing meals.

When to offer support

It can be difficult to know when someone with dementia is struggling with cooking. A goal of preserving independence is often at odds with the goal to maintain safety. Do you notice that they struggle to prepare recipes they have been cooking for years? Do they forget to add in essential ingredients, or leave an appliance on after a meal is prepared?

Cooking together makes cooking possible and can really be helpful for someone with mild dementia. It might relieve some of the worry and safety concerns if you can support them. Try simple recipes, making sure that the steps you use are as few as possible. Try to reduce the use of dangerous knives or blenders and watch out for the appliances being left on.

Nutrition

When a person with dementia is unable to cook for themselves, nutrition can quickly deteriorate. You may need to look at other options to provide your loved ones with the things they need. You could consider having their meals delivered and pre prepared. There are plenty of healthy nutritious ready meals now available pre-prepared from the supermarket. You could also have family, friends or a professional caregiver help prepare meals. Meals at Clifden House are tailored to the resident’s needs and what the individual and family tell us they like / don’t like. We cook food daily and bake regularly, ensuring that our residents get a wide variety of food to enjoy, as well as ensuring it fully meets their needs. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Thinking of Selling This Year? – These Four Tips Will Help... If you’re thinking of moving this summer, check out below. These tips below are based on our combined 60 years as estate agents serving Seaford and the surrounding areas, and can help if you’re considering moving. 1. Consider the costs of moving

Selling your home comes with certain expenses you should always budget for. There are solicitors, surveyors, and removal companies, plus several other costs to consider.

2. Sell before you seek

If you find somewhere you want to buy before agreeing a sale on your own property, then you won’t be in a position to proceed with the purchase (unless you are a cash buyer, first time buyer or investor). In this scenario, some people often end up paying over the asking price for the property they want to buy and potentially accepting less for their own home because they are so keen to move.

3. Remove reasons Often people will look for reasons not to buy a

property. Most of us fear making mistakes, especially when it’s something as life-changing as a new home. You can help reduce the reasons not to buy by applying fresh coats of paint where needed. And by getting all the niggly little jobs sorted like missing door handles on cupboards, broken hinges or removing any old, unused garden furniture.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

4. Think like a buyer Ask a friend who you trust, you know the type

who always gives you an honest opinion, to tell you what they think your property looks like from the outside. Their critique of your home’s kerb appeal could make all the difference by flagging up little jobs that need addressing before going onto the market.

If you need advice on any aspect of buying and selling in Seaford and Bishopstone, feel free to give us a call on 01323 490001. Thanks for reading,

Stephen and Andrew PS: We only focus on 20 properties at any one time, meaning you’ll get the attention you deserve. To find out more, get in touch.

NO SHOW this year folks – see the Members’ Notice Board below. Yes, it’s disappointing, but our gardens will continue to challenge, especially in the current climate of natural gardening. We have been urged in recent years to ditch poisonous pesticides, plant more trees, make homes for wildlife, and create natural ponds. Now mowing...Monty Don is vociferous, ‘cutting grass is about the most injurious thing you can do to wildlife,’ he declared last year, and he is not alone in advocating less mowing. The RSPB suggests ‘give your mower a rest,’ to create a temporary or seasonal meadow.’ Here in Seaford, the Town Council is continuing its less mowing, more wild-flowers in green spaces, following a successful trial in Summer 2020. So to mow, or not to mow, that is the big question.

Planting to feed the bees will help to stop their decline, and leaving dandelions to bloom is one suggestion for their spring diet. Spring bulbs can feed bees, but in my early April garden they make a beeline for the flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum). Well, what a difference a year makes. In January 2020, with Covid lurking round the corner, early springblossoming plants and shrubs, like chaenomeles, were already breaking blush-red buds into flower, as if to say ‘enjoy the beauty while you can because this is going to be a year like no other.’ Come April 2021 and the chaenomeles (flowering quince) in our beautiful garden at the Crouch was only then in full gorgeous flower, just like in a normal year. If you’ve a mind to be fanciful, could this be a sign that we will, soon, be able to welcome all our volunteers and visitors back? Oh, we do hope so. For those to whom Wednesday mornings are their garden treat, you are missing such delights as the spring snowflake, Leucojum ‘Gravetye Giant’ fronting the roses in the Mediterranean border, and a host of orangey-red tulips in pots, raised beds and among the fruit trees. If you look back to the dog days of last summer, the plum harvest was huge, and this year’s massed blossom surely presages a similar profusion of fruit. And near the entrance, the young rhubarb was prolific. The infant broad beans were shooting up strongly at either end of a raised bed near the classroom, protected by netting supported by sticks topped with flower pots. Katie said the rig pulls the netting tight and stops the birds from being trapped beneath. Ingenious eh? Peas will be planted between the two lots of beans.

100

Nearby, in front of the raspberry bed, Abdul was busy preparing the soil for runner beans, using our own homemade compost. Katie was to be seen peering into the depths of the little round pond in the gravel area which a month ago had been filled with frogspawn. However, the depths were murky and the top looked distinctly soupy. So what happened? It is possible that the spawn had not actually been fertilised or that the sudden frosts were too much for the spawn lying on the surface. But fingers crossed that there is still time for the frogs to lay some more. Last month we mentioned the furniture construction being carried out by Brian. His frenetic output includes a bench by the side of the classroom, still to be equipped with shelves, at which volunteers can work and plants can be displayed, a refurbished octagonal table and bench to provide seating for volunteer tea breaks and visitors in the sun, and the completion of a produce-weighing bench outside the poly tunnel. We can hardly wait to be able to show it all off. Until then, enjoy your own gardens, or venture into the Crouch gardens and the wonderfully replenished Peace Garden in front of our Seaford Community Garden. Calling all Local charities

Are you looking for a unique way to raise funds and awareness during 2021?

Seaford Town Council is looking to utilise the Martello Field (west) as additional car parking space temporarily during the busy summertime weekends in 2021, while also providing local charities/community groups with the opportunity to promote their work and raise funds while doing so.

preferred travel methods, but at the same time the Town Council feels certain that Seaford will see an influx in tourists travelling by car to the seaside and must therefore plan accordingly where it can to ease the burden of this on neighbouring streets and residents.

The Martello Field (West) will be available to local charity/community groups to hire from May through to September, where this space can be marshalled for much-needed extra car parking.

The Martello Field (East) will remain open as usual for use by the public and also, when restrictions allow, for hire for events and other community activities.

The local charity/community groups will be able to encourage donations towards their cause from users of the site, in return for offering the off-road and convenient car parking for the day. To avoid any financial risks for the charities taking part in the scheme, and to maximise the money they can make, the Town Council will collect a hire fee of 25% of any donations made during the day, capping the rate at £42.45 (the daily hire fee), with all remaining proceeds going to the charity/ group. In order to raise awareness of this new provision, temporary banners (supplied by Seaford Town Council) will be installed on the field fence. Charities/groups will also be encouraged to promote this parking option through their communication channels too. The decision to offer this parking solution was made following residents’ feedback regarding the extremely busy promenade and lack of car parking during the summer months of 2020. Another key factor is the highly anticipated ‘2021 staycation boom’, which is forecasting even higher than usual visitor numbers to coastal destinations. The Town Council would like to stress that this measure is not being introduced to encourage greater car use, with public transport, cycling or walking still being the

If your charity or community group would be interested in this opportunity, please do contact Town Council officers by email at admin@ seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk for further details.

seaford afternoon flower club Our March competition was entitled ‘Ring of Roses’ and we had some delightful interpretations and some beautiful roses, as you can see. Some of our members used knitted or crocheted roses in their designs. This was because we have been asked by Sussex National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) to make some roses to be incorporated into designs in their forthcoming Diamond Anniversary Floral Extravaganza entitled ‘Flower Power’. This will be held from 9th-12th September at Leonardslee Gardens and tickets are on sale now at £12 each from sussexflowerpower@yahoo. com. This promises to be a spectacular event and well worth a visit. For those of you who might feel inspired to have a go at flower arranging, NAFAS National Virtual Shows have produced a wide range of videos which can be seen on NAFAS YouTube channel.

With the relaxation of restrictions and the advances in the vaccination programme, we are hoping that it won’t be too long before our Club can resume our regular monthly meetings. What a joy it will be to see everyone again and to appreciate our exhibits displayed on our competition table, rather than in a two-dimensional format in a photograph. In the meantime, we will enjoy the spring and the welcome thought of summer approaching.

How Does Your Garden Grow? And how help may be on hand in the future When I moved into my home very near the seafront over ten years ago, I inherited a back garden with nothing but a scruffy area of grass with some paving and a couple of windswept shrubs, and a front garden which had been completely covered in tarmac, so it was indistinguishable from the pavement. Indeed, a selling point on the Estate Agent’s details was that it had parking for several cars! Coming from long line of gardeners I was keen to create a beautiful, wildlife-friendly space where I could plant the cuttings that I had brought from my previous home in Oxford and add to my collection, but everyone said that it couldn’t be done! They said that the salt-laden winds would decimate anything that I tried to plant. Well, they had a point! None of the plants that I had nurtured and carefully brought with me survived more than a couple of months. But not to be outdone, I did a bit of research, dug up the tarmac in the front garden and planted a wildlife-friendly shelter belt of tamarix and rosa rugosa to shelter the back garden from the worst of the wind. I added a gravel garden and experimented with plants which could survive the tough conditions, particularly sea shore plants such as the horned poppy, sea lavender, sea campion, sea holly and sea aster. I sowed teasels to provide seeds for the

birds. Ten years on the tamarix and rosa rugosa have had a huge impact on what I can grow in the back garden. There is usually something flowering, even in the middle of winter, and I was recently very excited to be able to take a photo of goldfinches feeding on the teasel heads just outside my living-room window. As for the help may be at hand bit... You may have heard of the Cliff Gardens project, which is part of Seaford CARES, a £2.5 million lottery bid covering the whole of the Ouse Valley (hence the Ouse Valley CARES project). This bid was submitted to the National Lottery Climate Action Fund by the South Downs National Park Trust. Its aim is to create projects throughout the region to help mitigate the effects of climate change and to create communities aware of the issues of rising temperatures, rising sea levels and extreme of weather – including storms. The Cliff Gardens will be developed as an educational garden showing the effects of climate and wind erosion on plant growth. It will be exposed to the same conditions and salt-laden winds as my garden. We hope to put the experiences of gardeners like myself to good use by providing advice to local people so that their gardens can become green oases which support abundant local wildlife and give pleasure to all. Seaford Town Council’s Civic Office Achieving National Awards Seaford Town Council has received national recognition for its work throughout the Covid-19 crisis Seaford Town Council has received national recognition from the National Association of Civic Officers for its work throughout the Covid-19 crisis. The Town Council was awarded a ‘Commendation’ for part one of the award and a ‘Highly Commended Second Place’ for part two. There is a small award of £150 for the highly commended 2nd place, which will be split between the Mayor’s and Young Mayor’s charities. Part one of the award was ‘how the Civic Office responded to work during the national crisis of 2020’ and part two was ‘how the Civic Office is moving forward after the national crisis of 2020’. The submission detailed the hard work that had gone into the last year, including how the Civic Office (Mayor’s and Young Mayor’s office) reacted to the pandemic and how the Town Council adapted its approach and found new ways to work effectively. This included more hosting of virtual events and meetings; increased collaborations with local groups and speaking on regional and local radio. Seaford Town Clerk Adam Chugg is quoted as saying: ‘As a Civic Office, the pandemic highlighted the key role the Mayor and Young Mayor (and their deputies) play in engaging with the local community and listening to their needs. The Civic Heads are in a unique position of being able to bring people together (albeit digitally) for events, acts of remembrance or kindness and really harnessing the sense of community through a common theme: neighbourliness and pride in our Town.’ Highlights of the achievements of the Civic Office during the pandemic include: Civic Events were either pre-recorded, shared on social media or ticketed socially distanced and live streamed. This included a collaboration featuring the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff, neighbouring Mayors and Council Chairs. This also enabled a greater audience than would normally be the case. National Commemorative days such as Remembrance Day were still respected and marked with private wreath laying.

114

The Mayor of Seaford created the Mayor’s Charity Initiative, inviting all local charities and non-profit organisations to sign up to have their profiles raised throughout the year. The Young Mayor of Seaford organised a sponsored cycle, and fundraising raffles for her chosen charity, the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance. The Mayor’s Garden Trail was changed into ‘Seaford’s Secret Gardens’. This revised format opened the event to lots more smaller gardening enthusiasts who would not normally have a large enough garden to be included in the annual garden trail, which were featured on social media. Christmas continued in a limited way and included an electronic ‘Mayor’s Christmas Card competition’ with local schools. Despite the Christmas Magic event being cancelled, the Town Council and the Mayor supported the ‘Buy Local Campaign’. Other festive events also took place such as the Christmas lights switch on, Prayers for Seaford, and the Best Window Display Competition. At the start of 2021, the Mayor launched the Covid Hero Awards to recognise local individuals’ and organisations’ dedicated work throughout the pandemic. The virtual civic events can still be viewed via the Town Council’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/ channel/UCjAYAaMKgdv8ckENO9NsSjA/videos For more information see the Mayor’s Facebook Page: https://mtouch.facebook.com/pg/mayorofseaford/ posts/?ref=bookmarks&mt_nav=0 https://mtouch.facebook.com/seafordyoungmayor/ Photos l-r: Mayor of Seaford Cllr Rodney Reed; Seaford Young Mayor, Chanel Pritchard.
