Welcome to the March issue of Seaford Scene. So Spring should be on its way, what with the days getting longer and the clocks going forward on the 29th. I can’t wait! In this bumper issue there’s plenty to read about and to get out and enjoy. Music is in the air with performances from Seaford Music Society, the monthly Lunchtime Concert at St Leonard’s Church and there’s more from The Corelli Ensemble. We have news from Seaford Choral Society and Seaford & District Folk Dance Club celebrate their 30th Anniversary. There’s the Sovereign Seas Folk Festival in Newhaven, not to mention the all the local gigs in and around Seaford. Enjoy! Oh and don’t forget it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday 15th!

Seaford Museum secures its third decade in the Iconic Martello Tower! Seaford Town Council and Seaford Museum & Heritage Society is pleased to announce that the lease for Martello Tower, which has housed the museum since 1979, has been finalised. Seaford Museum & Heritage Society now has the security of a ten-year rent-free lease being in place. The Chairman and Secretary from Seaford Museum & Heritage Society, Kay Turvey and Mike Wright respectively, met with Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Mark Brown, at the Martello Tower to confirm the signing of the lease. The Society is undertaking a hugely important project to improve access to the museum in order to enable all residents and visitors to the town to be able to gain entry to the museum. The tower is an iconic attraction

of the town and is vital to preserve the history and heritage of the town and local area. Now that the new ten-year lease is in place this will enable the Society to apply for further funding towards the project. The Society has also recently been successful in registering as a charity limited by guarantee, which opens up their opportunities for seeking support with the accessibility project. Seaford Town Council is committed to helping secure the future of the Museum and Society where it can and apologises sincerely for the delays that have been experienced with getting the new lease finalised. The Council is looking forward to working in partnership with the Society in the future and ensuring that the needs of the community and town are met. Anyone wanting more information on the Society or Seaford Museum itself should visit their website at www. seafordmuseum.co.uk

MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB It was back to business in January for the members of the Martello Rotary Club after the Christmas festivities.

Seaford Silver Band

Our first visitors of 2015 were Chris Goodchild and Bryan Pearce from Seaford Silver Band, who gave a very entertaining talk about the history of the Band and then demonstrated some instruments. The club really values its association with the band, which has been playing at every Proms Concert organised by the club since 2004. President Dave Winsor was pleased to hand over a cheque for £350 to Chris and Bryan as a donation. (photo above).

As we have reported in previous editions, the Martello Rotary Club provides support for many good causes, and our main focus internationally has been working with a local charity called CTAS, which stands for Community Training Assistance & Support (www.ctascharity.org.uk). Michele Spencer, the founder and driving force behind the charity, is an Honorary member of the club and she gave members an update of what has been happening in Pokhara in Nepal. Projects to supply clean water to communities in that area are ongoing, but the other activity that CTAS are involved in concerns childrens education and the Rato Paiera Childrens Tiffin project (feeding 40-45 children each day) has been threatened with closure as the Government has withdrawn financial support for the teaching staff. CTAS have decided to take over the funding of the two teachers at a cost of £600 per year, which just goes to show how a relatively modest amount of money can make a huge difference to the lives of those children,

who would otherwise have no education. President Dave Winsor presented Michele with a donation of £500, to be spent by CTAS.

Global Scholars

In late January the club had a visit from its “adopted” Global Scholar Ayumi Watanabe who comes from Nagasaki, Japan, together with Rotarian Yoshifumi Nishikawa from Omura Rotary Club. His Rotary District number 2740 has sponsored Ayumi and as he was in the UK on business he paid us a visit. Club President Dave Winsor presented him with a Martello banner and Yoshifumi presented Dave with one from his District. (photo above). In early February the club had a visit from another Global Scholar, Edward Boydell, who is studying for an MA at the University of Sussex. He was born in the UK but his family emigrated to Australia when he was five years old and he obtained his first degree in Canberra, before heading out to Fiji and Vietnam on various volunteering projects. The club wished him the best of luck for the future.

Would you like to find out more about Rotary ?

The club is always looking for new members and has organised an Open Evening for the evening of Monday 23rd March at Seaford Golf Club, with two guest speakers, the journalist and presenter Natalie Graham from BBC South East and Richard James from the Rathfinny Estate in Alfriston, a vineyard on our doorstep! This will be an ideal opportunity to chat with Rotarians and find out more, if you are interested please e-mail: plbseaford@aol.com or call 07802 305158 to book in.

Rotary Club of Seaford Just the Ticket for Good Health Practice

The new visual display in Reception at Seaford Medical Centre is proving just the ticket for patients – thanks largely to the Rotary Club of Seaford. Although funding has also come from two other sources it was due to Rotary’s generous contribution that Sue Smith, the chair of the Patients Participation Group at the practice in Dane Road, Seaford, was finally able to complete the plan to install the simple but clever device. Instead of standing in a queue for Reception (which has spilled outside the door on some occasions) you now just take a numbered ticket from the machine and then

sit in a comfortable seat, watching for your number to come up on the illuminated display to tell you it is your turn to approach the desk. The system clicked into action on Monday 19th January and has proved popular. Many have likened it to waiting your turn for the meat and fish counter at the supermarket – only here you can sit while you wait. Sue Smith said,“We are very grateful to Rotary for the funding. Our group is nothing to do with medical treatment, consultation or dispensing. We just aim to make it a better experience for the patients.” Practice Manager, Phil Abbott said, “Already we’ve had many comments from patients saying how well it all works. I’m sure it will prove a great help for everybody.”

Rotary Boot, Craft & Produce Fairs

The Rotary Club of Seaford is very pleased to announce that this year’s series of our very popular Boot, Craft & Produce Fairs will be starting again on Sunday 26th April. As for previous years, they will all be at the Martello Fields on Sundays from 9am to 1pm (weather permitting). Gates will open to stallholders at 7.30am and the cost of a pitch remains at £8. Admittance and car parking will be free for the public and refreshments will be available. For any questions phone Mike on 0771 443 0930 or email events@seafordrotary.org.uk. Stallholders do not have to book, simply turn up from 7:30 onwards, pay at the gate and set-up your stall. Our pitches are a very generous 20 feet wide, which means you have plenty of room to park your car and display your wares. This year’s dates are 26th April, 24th May, 14th June, 12th July, 9th August, 6th September and 4th October. Last year’s fairs were once again a great success and enjoyed by many. So if you have any unwanted bits and pieces, or craft and produce items that you would like to sell, or if you are looking for that special item why not come along and enjoy the day! Gellux Nails and Manicures

Gellux is perfect for natural nails, on fingers or toes for instant, long lasting, vibrant colour. The polish dries instantly - no waiting for polish to dry means no accidental smudges and a long lasting glossy finish. Gellux is a hybrid between traditional nail polish and salon gels, it is applied like a polish but with a hard wearing chip, scratch and fade proof finish that lasts up to 15 days. It is easily removed in approx 20 minutes, using finger foil parcels and remover. Gellux causes no more harm to the natural nail than a traditional nail polish and can even help to protect the natural nail from bumps and breaks. It can be applied over any nail extension system.

Seaford Station Community Scheme & art competition Seaford Station Community Scheme Wild Flower Garden had a brilliant first day back on Saturday 24th January. The scheme has been going from strength to strength with continued support from volunteers and donations of plants, bulbs, and seeds from the community. Come spring the garden will be an array of colour. Sylvia Dunn and Jenny Thornton (organisers) would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time. A very big thank you goes to Mark Epsom, Area Manager of Southern Rail and Michael Bradford from Network Rail, who carried out the massive cleanup operation on the opposite side, with the outcome of uncovering the old guard house, which is now in need of a makeover. After much discussion Jenny Thornton, Cllr Sylvia Dunn and Cllr Sarah McStravick came up with the idea to run

a young person’s art competition to mural the three boarded up windows with scenes of a waiting room, guards’ room and luggage/cloak room to replicate the Victorian/Edwardian or 1920/1930s era. The competition is open to anyone aged 11 to 18 years. Designs of either one of the scenes should be sent on A4 paper with age, name and contact details, also contact details of parent/guardian if under 18 to either: Jenny Thornton at the station, or Cllr Sylvia Dunn and Cllr Sarah McStravick c/o Seaford Town Council 37 Church Street Seaford. Closing date for entries is Friday 20th March. Mark Epsom on behalf of Southern Rail has kindly donated the winning prize, and the winners will have their art incorporated into the windows. If you would like to support the station’s Wild Flower Scheme, please donate plants, bulbs, and seeds. All donations can be left at the station with Jenny.

AGE Concern Eastbourne

Home from Hospital Service in the Seaford area

AGE Concern Eastbourne now runs a Home from Hospital service, which includes the Seaford area and which provides short term practical and empowering support, (eg shopping, light cleaning, escort to local appointments), initially for 3 weeks, for people aged 55 and over, and who have been recently discharged from hospital. You will get an initial assessment where the assessor will ask about your social support, financial support, mobility, befriending, home adaptations and unmet need. INVITATION BY SEAFORD FAIRTRADE GROUP FairTrade was formed just over 20 years ago and the Seaford Fairtrade Group is now 10 years old, being formed in 2005. The group meets on a regular basis and works hard trying to create more awareness in the town amongst businesses, schools, churches and organisations throughout the town. The group would like to invite you to Clinton Hall on Saturday 7th March from 10am for a FAIRTRADE MARKET as part of ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ where you can browse amongst the stalls and sample cakes made from Fairtrade ingredients, together with a free cup of coffee or tea. Entrance is 50p and children are free. There will also be a raffle. On Sunday 1st March there is a Fairtade Church Service at St Lukes, Walmer Road at 9.30am. Buying Fairtrade goods is about entering into a proper relationship with those who supply the food and goods we use. This allows the producers to receive a fair wage for their work rather than paying them a small amount, as so often happens in our High Streets. Everyone of us can help by buying a Fairtrade products for our everyday needs, just look for the Fairtrade logo. Fairtrade means that small scale producers and workers in developing countries can raise their standards of living. Many of them receive very low prices and wages for products that we in the developed world demand and consume. For more information about the Seaford Fairtrade Group please contact Group Secretary at: eil.tony370@btinternet.com or 01323 491638 or learn about the Fairtrade Foundation at fairtrade.org.uk

Flowers and Mother’s Day Mother’s Day began in 1908 after an American lady, Ann Jarvis, asked the local church if they would set aside a day to commemorate her mother’s death. From this grew the idea to create a holiday on which all mothers – alive or dead – could be remembered, parents respected, and family bonds strengthened. Ann started a campaign to have Mother’s Day recognised as a holiday. In 1914 she succeeded when US President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day, celebrated in May, an annual holiday. The practice has spread throughout the world! During her campaign, Ann posted or handed out white carnations, and this flower became a symbol for the day – a white carnation if their mother was dead, and a coloured one if she was still living. In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated in March on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, this was a time

when all family members were granted time off work and could gather together to worship. The day became known as Mothering Sunday – or Rose Sunday – because roses were handed out to all women present at church. Flowers symbolise purity, beauty and life – all attributes possessed by mothers – and gradually the tradition of giving flowers grew. But above all, flowers are given because our mothers like them! This year, Mothers Day is on Sunday 15th March 2015. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.15am TO 1PM Tues TO SAT. Closed Sun & Mon. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter. Feeding garden birds is a popular activity. According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) over half the adult population of the UK feed birds in their garden. As winter takes grip putting out food and water on a regular basis makes a huge difference to bird populations regardless of whether you live in town or countryside. But choosing the right food and providing a safe feeding environment is also vital to their welfare and safety. At Seaford Home Hardware Seaford we have a selection of bird feeders and recommended wild bird foods that will encourage garden visitors, and provide the essential proteins and nutrients they require to survive the harshest of winters. As birds can be quite fussy, they will be attracted to better quality products, so to maximize the number, and the species of visitors, we suggest our own brand. In fact, our own brand, Home Birdcare, is specially formulated using the very best ingredients and only available from Home Hardware of course, we do sell other brands too. Most of us have somewhere in our garden for a bird table or feeding station. Importantly, it needs to provide a safe haven for the birds and be of a design that will deter scavengers such as squirrels from easy pickings. It should also be sited well away from garden walls and fences, and even overhanging trees from which the local cats might spring a surprise attack! It is important to know that some seemingly innocuous foods can actually be harmful to birds so it is always

advisable to buy wild bird food that has been specially formulated. Fat balls and other fat-based food bars are excellent winter food. Peanuts are rich in fat and are popular with many species including tits, greenfinches, house sparrows, nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers and siskins. But they can be high in a natural toxin, which can kill birds, so only ever buy them from a reputable dealer. It is important to regularly clean bird tables and feeders. Mouldy food can cause respiratory infections in birds, while stale food provides a breeding ground for salmonella bacteria, which can cause food poisoning in birds, animals and humans. So never put out too much food. Finally, birds will welcome fresh water at any time of year, so put out a shallow bowl of water on your bird table and remember to replenish it daily, also checking it doesn’t freeze solid in winter. So, why not fly down to Seaford Home Hardware for friendly advice and to see our range of bird feeders, wild bird food and accessories that will encourage new life and colour to your garden. Let’s get going – Walking Football If you thought your footballing days were over, or you thought you were too old to start, think again! A ground-breaking new programme is now available to residents in Seaford and the surrounding areas who are aged over 50. Walking Football is a slow-paced version of the beautiful game, aimed at the over 50s and designed to help people keep an active lifestyle irrespective of age. As well as simply getting back to playing football it is also a great way to meet like-minded people. Walking Football is offered at the Downs Leisure Centre, Sutton Road, Seaford on a Wednesday morning between 10am and noon, and is open for everyone aged over 50. The sessions cost just £2. There are no skills required and it is paced to the slowest person in the group – running is not allowed! Neither is body contact or sliding tackles. The sessions are structured around a warm up, basic ball skills, a 20minute game and a warm down. Volunteer Walking Football Coach, Dick Plowman says: “I am a retired frustrated footballer myself. We are running these sessions to help and encourage all over 50s to be active; and to offer a session for all frustrated footballers! It really does encapsulate fun, fitness and friendship.” Walking Football is not only suitable for male retired footballers, it is also suitable for ladies and for those who have never played football before. The group relaxes after the session by meeting in the café for coffee. To attend the Walking Football, contact Downs Leisure Centre on 01323 490011 or visit the Wave Leisure Facebook page.

Eat yer greens! (or you don’t get any pudding)

by Julian O’Vegetables

Fast forward fifty years or so and here I am writing about the virtues of green vegetables. They are full of vitamins, like my pudding hostage-Xtaking Dad used to tell me, but they are also high in dietary fibre and, if prepared and presented the right way, can look and taste good too. Simply add other flavours and turn those green vegetables into soup. This one uses broccoli, but any will do.

A not-so-fond childhood memory. The smell of boiling cabbage announces Sunday lunch. Mum puts a plate in front of you that has so many nice things like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and gravy and roast potatoes. And a pile of dark green mush in a puddle of green water. You tuck in and eat the nice things, putting off the inevitable. Once before, you managed to slip the greens under the table for the dog, who would hoover up any scrap that came his way, but even this four-legged dustbin turned his nose up. You only have the greens left. You toy with them, prodding with your fork. Dad turns and says: ‘Eat yer greens, or you don’t get any pudding.’ Would be classed as cruelty these days!

Vegetable oil; 1 onion, finely chopped; 1 celery stick, sliced; 1 leek, sliced; 1 medium potato, diced; knob of butter; 1 litre chicken or vegetable stock; 1 large head broccoli, roughly chopped (use it all, including the stalk); 1 lump of stilton or other blue cheese (optional)

Fry the onions in a large pan until soft. Add the celery, leek, potato and butter. Cover the pan and sweat the vegetables for a few minutes, then add any chunky bits of broccoli and pour in the stock. Cook for 15 minutes. Add the rest of the broccoli and cook for a further 5 minutes. Transfer to a blender and blitz until smooth. Crumble in the cheese if wanted and serve. Enjoy!

Aladdin performance For additional needs groups Seaford Musical Theatre held a relaxed performance of their sell-out pantomime, Aladdin, for local additional needs groups, and their friends and families on Sunday 1st February.

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail The new Sussex Cancer Support Centre in Brighton is well on the way to completion this Autumn. Geoff Stonebanks’s Driftwood Fundraising Group, which organizes the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, has contributed £23700 to the appeal so far. The appeal now needs a further £500K, so the 4th annual garden trail this summer will help swell the coffers. The trail will take place on the 25th and 26th July. 2015 will be a rather special event as the patron, TV Celebrity Gardener, Christine Walkden (photo right), will actually be in attendance in Geoff ’s garden, Driftwood, in Seaford to officially launch this years event. Time permitting it is hoped she will visit other gardens with Geoff that day too. Are you interested in opening your garden to support Macmillan Cancer Support? All the details are on the trail website, www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk

Relaxed performances are specifically designed to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including people with an Autism Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorders, or a learning disability. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement, and some small changes made to the light and sound effects, if necessary. As the show-run genie, Kate Horsecraft, was unavailable, understudy Cherry Newby delivered a sparkling performance, after being freed from the lamp, alongside Tanieth Kerr, as the Spirit of the Ring (pictured). To be added to the mailing list for future relaxed performances, please email Angie Wright at : angie@ angiewright.co.uk

Alternatively you can call Geoff on 01323 899296 and discuss how to become involved! There are currently 13 garden owners who have signed up to open between Brighton, Seaford and Eastbourne with just 2, so far in the town. Macmillan will provide the public liability insurance and you have the choice of whether or not to serve tea and cakes! So, take the plunge this summer and support a great charity and you might even see Christine Walkden in your garden! Photos: top and bottom 9 Kingsmead, Seaford and Christine Walkden

From Newhaven to Scapa Flow – Launch of MV Huskyan on January 22nd 2015 One wouldn’t think that there would be a link between Newhaven on the South Coast of England and Scapa Flow in the Orkney Isles. However there is, and that was seen when the MV Huskyan (meaning “Strong” in Orcadian) was launched from Newbury Engineering Boatbuilders Ltd boat yard in Newhaven in January. The owners of the boat, Emily Turton and Ben Wade, have worked non-stop with Brian Newbury to ensure that the launch of their new vessel went without a hitch. This is a fitting finale to Brian Newbury’s career in boatbuilding. He has produced some amazing vessels from his Newhaven Boatyard over the years, mostly fishing vessels for Newhaven and other UK ports, together with tugs, workboats and yachts for customers as far away as Tanzania. What better way to end than with a vessel like MV Huskyan. Emily Turton and Ben Wade run “Radiant Queen Charters” http://www.radiantqueen.co.uk/mv-huskyan. php and their new vessel MV Huskyan will be providing luxury accommodation for divers. She is double the size of their previous vessel, the Radiant Queen, which means that they are able to explore new sites. The Scapa Flow, where some of the Summer 2015 dives are to take place, contains some unique World War I relics from the German Fleet and divers will be able to investigate this fascinating site. After diving, what could be better than coming aboard the MV Huskyan where luxury accommodation and good food awaits them! This was a very successful day for everyone concerned!

Aladdin REVIEW

Seaford Musical Theatre at the Barn Theatre When you are taking an eight-year-old to her first pantomime you really really want it to be good, so she’s left with a lasting image of theatre that will give her a life-long love of live performance. The rousing overture over I sneaked a peek at Molly’s face as she reacted to Abanazar’s evil opening words – yes, the talented Steve Llewellyn had caught her imagination. But would she like the singing and dancing in old Peking? Oh yes she did! She was as delighted as me by the casting of long-legged Gemma Albrow as Aladdin and flame-haired Lamiah Davey as Princess Peony; this pairing sang beautifully and we all clapped like mad. However, it is to the Musical Theatre’s credit that they remembered that we return to the familiar panto stories time after time because of the comedy, the singing serving to provide a change of pace between the slapstick. And here the Barn performers excelled. John Tester was an exuberant Widow Twankee, dolled up to Ashley Electrical is Ashleyrun Electrical is a family a family Ashley Electrical is run business, business, are we a we family run are fully fully insured, insured, NICNICEICwe approved business, are EIC approved and fullyPinsured, NIC andPpart registered. part registered. approved and There nono jobjob too too big ThereisisEIC part P registered. big or small.

the nines in a gallon of blue eyeshadow, and making his entrance by disrobing to display a fat suit in abundant female form, which brought the house down; other costumes were more modest but sumptuous. Shar Turnbull, who was responsible for these, also put in a terrific and very comic performance as Wishee Washee and both got the audience participation going with a loud swing. The show was stolen, however, by Julie Terry and Ann Taylor as the incompetent policemen Y-Dun Wong and Hu Dun-Pong, entering on scooters, with blue lights on their helmets. Their tongue-twisting repartee was brilliantly voiced and chase scenes on such a small stage were hilariously executed. At this point I must give due credit to Sarah Eaton’s direction. She didn’t miss a trick, and used all parts of the theatre to make this production even more audience inclusive, aided by Shar Turnbull and some inventive choreography by Stuart Hall.

David Foster’s Emperor was suitably pompous and Caley Foster was a sweet but chippy So-Shy. But what about the magic? Get On Board! £4,000 raised for Community Transport Charity Bus The Haven’s Mayors were united in their support for the launch of a new community bus appeal last Saturday at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston. ‘Get On Board’ 2015 aims to replace the CTLA accessible minibus used by residents in Newhaven, Seaford, Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs.

The launch dinner event raised in excess of £4,000 of the £50,000 fundraising target set by the East Sussex charity, and guests enjoyed performances from vocalist Lamiah Davey, Britain’s Got Talent Semi-Finalist Sam Jones and Julie’s Art of Noise. CTLA undertakes over forty thousand passenger journeys each year for residents of the four towns. You can donate online to the ‘Get On Board’ campaign at: www.localgiving.com/getonboard or by sending donations to CTLA, Hillcrest Centre, Hillcrest Road, Newhaven, BN9 9EA. Seaford Kurlers Hi everyone – if you are reading this then you must have survived the winds and the rain. Well done! I am writing this in late January so no idea what February holds for us...it’s got to be good. Seaford Kurlers are finishing their annual membership enrolments. Most of the group are signing up for 2015 – so we must be doing something right. A few people have turned up to see what we are all about. If you are wondering, drop in to have a look and try us out. We do not just stop at playing the sport of New Age Kurling, there is also a lively social side to the club. So forget the image of tough sports people – we have a social break during the weekly sessions. We also arrange trips out and have our famous Christmas Lunch. We usually use ESDA coach services for these trips but at the moment we are unable to arrange anything because ESDA Coach service has gone in to administration. ESDA is however hopeful that they will find another coach firm to fill the gap. Coaches that are used by ESDA have to be fitted out for people with a variety of disabilities. For many people these coaches,

and the very caring drivers, are a lifeline. If it was not for such facilities, many would become housebound and isolated. This in turn leads to many serious health problems. ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association) serves the needs of many disabled people in the East Sussex area. If you wish to know more about ESDA you can contact them on 01323 514500, visit the website: www.esda.org.uk or write to: 1 Faraday Close, Eastbourne, BN22 9BH. Seaford Kurlers are a branch of ESDA and the sport of New Age Kurling can be done by people with any mobility problem. They do so on equal terms with people that do not have any difficulties. Visit us on Tuesdays from 2pm - 4pm and see what we do. Your first taster session is free, thereafter the cost is £2.50 and the annual membership is £5. Seahaven Lioness Club

After a busy time in the run-up to Christmas the Lionesses had a relatively quiet month in January, with just one or two social events for members and a coffee morning at the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven, which went surprisingly well, considering how poor everyone tends to feel in January! One of the projects the Club committed to some time ago was the introduction of the patient call system at the Dane Road surgery, which was a need highlighted in a patient survey carried out by the Patient Participation Group. The system has now been installed and several Lionesses went to the Surgery to make a presentation to Dr Paul Herridge, who represents the medical staff on the PPG, and Group Chair, Sue Smith (photo above).

GOOD FRIDAY 2nd APRIL 2015 ST LEONARD’S CHURCH, SEAFORD You are invited to join us to sing this ever-popular, hauntingly beautiful work in St Leonard’s Church. Anna Tabor, Music Director, conducts with organ accompaniment, and soprano and baritone soloists. Of the many settings of the Requiem, this is probably the most widely loved. In comparison with large-scale masterpieces of Brahms, Verdi and Berlioz, Faure’s (right) setting seems gentle and unassuming. However it is impossible not to be moved by

the beauty of this humble masterpiece. There will be a rehearsal for all singers on Monday 30th March from 7.15 to 9.15 pm at Cradle Hall School, Lexden Road, Seaford. Do not worry if you do not have a score, the Choir can provide these. On Good Friday, the day starts at 5pm in St Leonard’s Church with a run-through, followed by refreshments, before the performance commences at 7pm. All singers and members of the audience are asked to pay £3 at the door. Proceeds from the concert this year will go to Seaford Carers Support Group, a local group who provide support for carers of people with dementia, under the auspices of the Alzheimer Society. Everyone most welcome! And make a note in your diaries: SPRING CONCERT: Haydn’s The Creation, Saturday 2nd May, 7.30pm at St Leonard’s Church, Seaford For further information, please telephone the Secretary 01323 482387 or visit our website: www.seaford-choral-society.com or email: info@seaford-choral-society. com. Ollivers Restaurant

Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, then you will find the Sweet Treats menu on offer at the Galley Cafe hard to resist!

His own banana bread with maple syrup and Sussex ice cream hits the spot – a crispy crust, fluffy, warm banana bread with walnuts and cinnamon, topped with a generous scoop of creamy chocolate ice cream, drizzled with sweet maple syrup – the perfect combination for a healthy but indulgent dessert! There’s a gluten-free Chocolate Brownie with strawberry ice cream – ideal for wheat-free diets – moist and chocolatey with a warm, gooey centre and served with delicious strawberry ice cream. And if you didn’t manage to try the sharing platter in February, it’s still on the menu – gluten free Chocolate Brownie with Raspberry Blondie and a warm chocolate sauce. The Blondie was my favourite – a variation on the traditional brownie with raspberries and white chocolate, the ultimate in sweetness! So, as it’s Mother’s Day this month, why not take your mum for a Sweet Treat at the Galley Café – and treat yourself at the same time! The Galley at Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club, Marine Parade is open from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. Entry is from the car park on Marine Drive (next to the Buckle Holiday Park) or from the beach.

We are open for Mother’s day lunch on Sunday 15th March 12 midday - last orders 1.30pm. Please call to make a reservation. www.olliversrestaurant.co.uk

During their day trips and holidays in November and December, Victoria Travel held a raffle on the coach with five prizes on offer, from a weekend away for two to a bottle of champagne. Their regular passengers were only too happy to dip into their pockets to buy tickets to help this worthy cause. They also joined the team from Victoria Travel on a mystery fund raising day out. Everyone who came was happy to book the day out, not knowing where they were going or what they were going to do, which was very brave and trusting of them! They were firstly taken to Chichester, where the Chichester Canal Company kindly took them on a two-hour cruise along the local canal with tea and coffee on offer, and some lively and amusing quizzes taking place. In the afternoon they went to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum for their annual Christmas Market. Although it was a little wet under foot, there was a great atmosphere to get the Christmas spirit underway, although everyone was grateful for the cream tea and hot cuppa served once back on the coach. The raffle was drawn on Christmas Day during their annual Christmas trip and many joked that if they won they wanted their prize delivered that day! Ross Patrick, who runs Victoria Travel said, “when we came up with the idea to raise some money for Children in Need, we hoped to raise a few hundred pounds for the charity but it soon became very clear how generous our passengers were as the total kept rising. We had a wonderful mystery day out and everyone had a great time. We have a wonderful bunch of regular passengers and I would like to thank all of them who took part for their overwhelming generosity.”

Who’s Who In Seaford?

Julia Clark, President of Seaford Sweethearts WI

BEAUTIFUL furnishing fabrics at beautiful prices

Julia has lived in Seaford since 2006 and works as freelance Graphic/ Web Designer and co-runs a flat freehold company. She went to school and college in Leeds and Bradford, and gained a degree in Design & Ceramics at the University of Staffordshire. Julia is married to Aiden and has a son, Sam, aged 6.

What do you like best about Seaford? Whenever you go out you bump into someone you know. I like shopping and lunching and love the fact you can park easily in town near the shops for free, or very cheaply. What is your favourite piece of music? ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ by Massive Attack takes me right back to the great time I had in my Uni days. What is your favourite film? I especially like Christmas films but growing up I loved The Breakfast Club. What book are you reading at the moment? I am dipping into the non-fiction Make Your Mark at the moment which really inspires my design ideas. Which living person do you most admire? Working Mums who juggle everything. I only work part time and find it hard to get everything done – hats off to you ladies! What has been your most embarrassing moment? When I once accidentally hit ‘Reply to all’ (200+) on a work email with a cheeky jokey comment about someone, luckily it was just in jest with a smiley and the person took it in good spirits. What makes you sad? The fact that I lost my Dad through an unexpected and brief illness at only 64 before we had our son. I would have loved them to have gotten to know each other – I think my son is a mini version of my Dad! What is the best advice you have ever been given? You learn more from mistakes than from getting things right first time. What words or phrases do you most overuse? Hold your horses – I must say it a lot to my son because he’s started saying “hold your horse Mummy” when I ask him to do something! What is your favourite smell? Thai food, walking past Lush, fresh homemade brownies – yum! What is your greatest extravagance? Holidaying in the Maldives – the most beautiful place, absolute paradise,

If you’ve seen a furnishing fabric you love, we’ll supply it by the metre, saving you money. Just call us with the fabric name and brand, and why not ask about our making-up service, too?

Call Katie Sillett

and the people are so friendly. The bar staff remembered our drinks and room number from a visit 2 years before! (maybe we drank too much ;-) ) What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Life really is too short – don’t worry about what might never happen and don’t hold grudges, the only person they hurt is you! Which person in history would you most like to meet? Hmm, maybe someone from Ancient Egypt to find out just how they built those pyramids? What would your motto be? Never regret, if it’s good it’s wonderful, if it’s bad, it’s experience – I have that on my wall! Anything else you may like to include? Can’t go without mentioning our Seaford Sweethearts WI group again, it’s our 5 year anniversary this month and I am so glad I joined the group, I went with friends, but have made so many brilliant new friends through the group, learnt new skills and generally had a good laugh at every meeting! Email hello@seafordsweetheartswi.com if you’re interested in joining – we are a ‘young at heart’ group, no age limit as some assume – we’re more about making and doing than sitting and listening – oh and having a cuppa and a slice of cake of course too!

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB After the busy Christmas period we have had a relatively quiet month spending the money we have previously raised. We closed our Christmas Raffle and have sent £2,000 to the Lions Clubs International Foundation to go to their Ebola Orphans Aid Appeal Programme. All funds raised will be used for food, education, sanitation and countering the stigma of the disease, and will be distributed through local Lions in the countries affected. Every penny we donate goes directly to help those in need. We have also donated £300 to Dorothy House in Peacehaven to help them to get out a bit more, and a further £500 to the 60+ Club in Seaford (photo left) to update their toilet facilities. We have not just been spending money. We did have a book sale at Paradise Park – thank you once again Paradise Park for your support. The weather and time of year were against us but we still managed to raise nearly £100.

The Club meets at 8pm on the fourth Thursday of each month at the White Lion Hotel, Seaford. If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups with or without a driver, i.e. if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance) call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses. Unfortunately though, due to unreported damage to one of the busses, we may have to restrict their usage.

The premises offer free parking, disabled access and toilets. The Hillcrest Café is well known for its very good food, cooked fresh daily on site. A special date for your diary is THURSDAY 2nd APRIL 2015 when our popular Spring and Easter themed market enables customers to buy unique gifts. There will also be the usual wide range of stalls including cheese, eggs, fresh fish, Indian food and spices, baked goods, jams and preserves, and wholefoods. 30 years and still dancing

The present club was formed in 1985, but country dancing has taken place in this area since 1964, when it was run by the Education Institute. In 1969 a club was started by John Goddard whose son, Sean, is one of our regular callers. Dancing continued through the 1970s and early 80s at various venues. In those days there was a display group, which danced at many events in Seaford. There were costume balls at Corsica Hall and Charleston Manor. Today we just dance for fun, exercise and to enjoy the friendly social atmosphere. We meet at the Downs Leisure Centre on Mondays, 7.45pm to 9.45pm and we welcome new members.

There will be a celebration 30th Anniversary Dance on Saturday 21st March at the Seaford Constitutional Club, and we would be delighted if any past members would join us to meet old friends. There will be a display of photos from earlier days. For details please ring Judy on 01323 890759 or Pam 01273 585551

Running Commentary... Whether or not you set yourself new targets for the year back in early January, the onset of better weather and more daylight hours through March could well be a second opportunity to plan new personal running challenges for the months ahead. It will probably involve running further or faster, tackling new events which are perhaps not in Sussex or even somewhere overseas. Running might be your favourite pastime yet your motivation could still benefit from a prod or kick, or thinking outside the box more than usual. If you don’t do competitive running, and only go round the roads in Seaford, perhaps now is the time to venture further. A route that inspires me at any time of year, and one that I have run countless times is completely flat and 9½ miles long, but it never seems that far. It begins at the kiosk on the seafront by the end of West View, and goes towards the Sailing Club and under the railway bridge to the main road. It turns left and picks up the path through the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve to Denton Corner and then left to go over the level crossing and the Newhaven Bridge. The route then bears left and follows the path alongside the river, past the Lifeboat Station, and along Fort Road

www.movementforlife-pilates.co.uk all the way to the end, stopping at the fenced off West Pier. This is the half-way point so I retrace the route back to the Seafront kiosk and treat myself to a cup of tea. If 9½ miles is too long, then turning at the Lifeboat Station would make the route 8 miles long, or turning by Sainsbury’s petrol station would give you a 6-mile run. To me, it’s more than just an easy, longish run. It’s the constant inspiration gained from running past Seaford Beach and the ever changing seascape, and taking in all the beauty of the Nature Reserve. Making a mental note of the variety of wild flowers in bloom and how many different species of birds I see, seems to make me quicken my pace but with a minimal amount of effort. Then a different set of things catches my attention running from Denton Corner roundabout to the Newhaven Bridge. Perhaps it’s the quicker pace of life caused by running alongside the speeding vehicles or just looking forward to crossing the Bridge and noting the state of the tide. For anyone with just half an ounce of interest in all things maritime, the riverside path to the pier has plenty to enjoy, and then… to re-visit everything again on the return to the Seafront kiosk. Even the cup of tea at the finish plays its part in this, one of my favourite runs. Other runs which are at the top of my list include routes involving the Cuckmere Valley, The Downs, Mount Caburn and Seaford Head. Our amazingly beautiful local environment is always there to inspire us. All we have to do is to realise its potential and tune into it. Motivation is a crucial part of a successful runner’s mindset, whether you run for fun and fitness or for the enjoyment of competing. It can be totally selfcreated, from watching something on television, gentle persuasion from somebody, or the power of the natural world that we run through. The Archway Choir to sing with BGT’s Richard and Adam

A few weeks ago The Archway Choirs’ head office in Seaford applied to perform with Britain’s Got Talent duo Richard and Adam at the Congress Theatre on February 13th, 2015. An advert appeared on social media and in the newspaper inviting choirs to apply and win the chance to sing alongside the talented brothers. Only a few days ago, an email was received inviting us to take part in the show performing ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’, The Impossible Dream and one of their own arrangements – SkyFall arranged by Musical Director, Jane Reeves.

“We had to select 25 members from across all of our choirs in Sussex and it was very difficult,” said Jane, “but we are ready to go and can’t wait to share a stage with Richard and Adam.” Members were selected from both Eastbourne and Seaford Choirs and extra rehearsals are currently underway to prepare for the big show named ‘A Night At The Movies’. New members are always welcome to join Archway Choirs, with no audition necessary but lots of fun and wonderful projects to be involved in. Visit www. thearchwaygroup.com or call 01323 897590.

A view from the Potting Shed

Peat or No Peat? That is the Question?

3 The weather will now start to warm up

so start clearing and weeding the flower boarders. Mulch any bare soil to restrict any new growth of weeds. 3 You can now start to move any shrubs, evergreens or small trees. Stake them well at their new site and water well. 3 Start to plant any new climbers as the weather warms up. Make sure that you have any trellis or wires up before you plant. It may seem a bit bare at first but most climbers will get away fast and soon cover their supports. 3 Lift and divide overgrown or large lumps of summer flowering perennials. Reduce clumps to a smaller size, leaving out the centre of the old clump as this will soon die off. 3 Dead-head daffodils regularly but leave the rest of the foliage alone for at least eight weeks. 106

However, the point is that you can now make up your own decision as to use it or lose it! Mike Parker th on

eat is coming back to Garden Centres for those who want it. The government set a target to make the industry peat free by 2020 and supplies have been reducing over recent years. However, until a suitable alternative can be found that is acceptable to a lot of gardeners, the use of peat will continue. Peat is an ideal soil improver and growing medium especially for ericaceous (acid) plants. It has now been announced that the premium Irish moss peat supplier Bord Na Mona is therefore supplying a 75L bag from 2015 for £6.99. Thompson & Morgan also recently announced that they are now making their “Incredible Compost” available with

an 80% peat content and J. Arthur Bowers are soon to introduce their Masterblend Compost containing 100% peat at £6.99. Green supporters are most disappointed with this move. The campaign to save peat was not helped by the revelation that the majority of all peat harvested went direct to power stations and not to the gardening trade.

Celtuce Lactuca Sativa Celtuce, otherwise known as Stem lettuce, Celery lettuce or Chinese lettuce is grown for its thick stem and is still a popular vegetable in China, although it originated from India. Its leaves are rather poor on flavour so it is grown exclusively for its thick round central stem. The plants may be grown in full sun but prefer some shade. Sow in the spring in rows 18 inches apart in well drained soil. When about two inches in height, thin seedlings to 12 inches apart. The plants grow quickly and should be ready to harvest in 80 days. Eat when young, before the plant get too stringy. The seed can now be obtained from Kings, Thompson & Morgan or D.T. Brown or check other on-line sites.

The next Social Evening is on Thursday 26th March at 7pm. The guest speaker is Robert Hill-Snook, Head Gardener at Brighton Pavilion. This is our first members’ competition of the year. Three Daffodils in a vase. Bring your own vase.

Frozen snow is lightly covering Seaford Community Garden at the Crouch as this is written, but – ain’t nature wonderful? – the hellebores and snowdrops are blooming undaunted and the daffodils are just showing bud ready for a tremendous display as your March Seaford Scene plops onto the mat. Much as we’ve felt like hibernating through the winter cold we’ve been huddling in the comparative warmth of the polytunnel taking hardwood cuttings to add to those taken at the optimum time of November. We’re adding the lime and crimson of dogwood (cornus), the fragrance of mock orange (philadelphus) and the delicacy of sambucas (Black Lace). And by way of a thank you to all who regularly bring us your kitchen waste for the compost, and to Mike

who looks after them, when emptying your veg peelings you can now enjoy the scent of the sweet-smelling Christmas box (sarcococca) that has just been planted in the bed by the bins. You can never start gardening too young, as evidenced by the tots from Charlie Bear’s Nursery at the Mercread Centre who have prepared their bed for vegetables and made sure the birds keep off the seeds by making a most attractive but very scary scarecrow (above). Meanwhile we grown-ups are warming up our beds with cloches ready for broad beans, and the radishes are in. A group of volunteers got on the No.12 to Brighton’s Corn Exchange to visit Seedy Sunday, sponsored by Infinity Foods. Lyn reports that a variety of heritage and organic seeds were on offer to swap or buy, along with plants from local nurseries. There were wildlife conservation stands offering information on what we can do to help badgers, hedgehogs and bees, all vital to our biodiversity and garden health. You could also learn about the Brighton and Lewes Biosphere Site, now a UNESCO site and the first new one for 40 years. Why haven’t we got one in Seaford? There were also courses on offer on permaculture, herbal medicines and ‘conscious gardening’ at the Food Project Community, and cookery demonstrations. A new organisation. www.beyond-gm.org, provided answers about GM plants and the need to raise our voices to protect our food system for the future. And Christine Walkden spoke entertainingly and knowledgeably about growing better vegetables. Back at our own garden, James has been busy mending fences – the leeks at the time of writing were still prolific – and be sure that we shall be adding items for sale as soon as they are ready, along with plants that are available all year. So come in and visit any Wednesday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm. The Garden Team Hellebores mean spring’s around the corner (left). Tots from Charlie Bear’s made this colourful scarecrow (right).

Seaford Gardening Club I expect some hardy souls will be venturing out into their gardens in the cold weather – the greenhouse is always a warmer haven to do the odd jobs! Hopefully by the time you read this report the days will be a little longer and gardens will be more inviting to start tidying. Glenda Law, our speaker for January, introduced us to the beauty of Scotland, which she captured on film during five trips. As she rightly said, the weather can be a bit inconvenient, to put it mildly! She always stays at a self-catering cottage and is awakened by the dawn chorus each morning – a good start to the day. She often witnesses the bird migration in autumn which is quite a spectacle and sometimes badgers come to visit her and gobble up her peanut butter sandwiches! Nowadays wild wolves do not roam Scotland, but some live in a well protected wildlife environment. So many lovely slides of the varied number of lochs, the Isle of Mull (great for bird watching), Fingles Cave (photo right), also known as a piece of music, Glencoe (very stark pictures to show the mood of the place), and Ben Nevis – which she decided not climb as she did not want to call out a rescue team! On the shore of Loch Ness there is a large statue of the so-called monster. Reindeer are also now being re-introduced in one part of the Highlands. Glenda showed us a slide, taken by a licensed photographer, of an Osprey’s nest which was huge! The male bird does not build a new nest but just keeps adding twigs to the existing one as the years go by. It overlooked a large trout farm – the owners did not mind the birds helping themselves as it was wonderful to have them there at all.
