Welcome...

to the June issue of Seaford Scene. Finally it really feels like we’re getting back to normal with more restrictions lifted ,and by the time you read this you’ll be able to meet up with others in your home and many more outside. Hospitality should be up and running including entertainment such as cinemas, museums and children’s play areas, plus theatres and gyms. Hotels and B&Bs will be open, and travel to some countries is possible. Above all, we can choose to hug friends and family – however, we must be cautious as this remains a way of transmitting COVID-19. On this more positive note, as you browse through the pages of this issue, you will see that things are getting back on track in Seaford. We have news from Seaford Tennis Club on page 16, and gardens will be open and raising funds for charity this year, see page 73. Seaford Music Society is performing live this month (page 23) and there are a variety of exhibitions on at the Crypt Gallery (page 20). It’s World Refill Day on the 16th (page 76), and with environmental issues in mind, we have articles from Seaford CARES (page 108), Trees for Seaford (page 51) and Greenhavens Network (pages 64 and 115), plus updates from Seaford Community Garden (page 71) and A View from the Potting Shed (page 68). Find out what Cradle Hill Primary School has been up to on page 36, and check out what’s happening on Seaford Beach and Seafront, pages 5, 81 and 98. Let’s celebrate the summer solstice on the 21st and, all being well, the easing of more restrictions! Enjoy your June! Fran Tegg. Editor

What an Achievement! By Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team (SVET) We’re overwhelmed and delighted to have been awarded the Mayor’s Award for Health and Well Being 2020/1. This is an award and achievement for each and every volunteer who helped set up the service, kept it going and helped our community in so many ways. Congratulations and well done to you all! As many of you will know, Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team was rapidly set up in March 2020 in response to the Covid crisis and Lockdown. The service provided a telephone helpline to connect our vulnerable residents with volunteers who could help with shopping and prescriptions. Although we must confess to helping with a few other different calls for support, which we rose to the challenge on. This team involved over 200 volunteers and a network of community support pulling together for a common aim. From individual members of the community, through to the Rotary clubs, Town and District Councils, and local Churches who provided physical or financial support. What we have achieved for our lovely town of Seaford would not have been possible without all of you who stood up, stepped out or stayed at home to protect the health and well being of the town during the Covid lockdowns. THANK YOU ALL. As we’ve been wrapping things up, we’ve reflected on the achievements made between March and December 2020: l Created a team of over 200 volunteers. l Provided volunteers with PPE. l 11,000 leaflets delivered to every household in the Seaford area. l Set up and manned a telephone helpline. l Set up a bespoke database system to enable more efficient despatch of tasks. l Completed more than 2,808 total tasks (averaging approximately 10 tasks per day, for every day of activity). l Implemented a team structure and management committee with governance and policies in place. l Continually refined/revised our service as the situation kept changing. l Became members of the National Council

6

for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) to support our activities. l Left a legacy in place for the volunteer team structure, framework and resources for the future. We’re also very proud of how our town set up more services to handle people’s needs, and we used the service to help promote these and enable our callers to become more confident, independent and selfsufficient. When we were confident we were no longer needed, we closed the helpline from 1st January 2021, keeping a watchful eye over the most recent lockdown. Since this time, we’ve wound up our service, sorted our admin and put our finances in check. Any remaining funds received from individual donations on our GoFundMe campaign have been retained alongside some other resources, and our team governance, in readiness for a future emergency/purpose. All this infrastructure will enable us to jump into action again quickly should the need arise. Although, of course, we all hope that this is not needed for some time! We’ll continue to keep our Facebook page active. We’d like to keep in contact with our network of volunteers and supporters, and continue to provide our community with useful information. The motto of Seaford is often quoted as ‘In the Wind Strength’, yet the essence of that strength is in the town’s community. As we all look back on what’s been achieved together this has been a vibrant, energetic, passionate, and caring team from the very start, working together, using each other’s individual strengths and skills. It ends in a greater sense of community and stronger friendships. The measure of what’s achieved is in the voices and words of those we helped and those who volunteered. To everyone who came together and supported this great team effort – no matter how big or small – we thank you and hope you’re as proud as us in what we were able to do for our great town. Sarah McStravick (SVET Chair) and the rest of the SVET Team.

Seaford Photographic Society For our first meeting after the Easter break we were privileged to have a lecture by Chris Weston, one of the world’s most influential wildlife photographers. This was an inspiring talk and he gave us all a lot to think about on how we go about creating our photographs. His view is that it’s not about capturing what you see; it’s about capturing what you are feeling. The best subjects are therefore ones that you feel passionate about, so you will bring something personal to your photographs. With his wildlife photography he will often spend a day or two in the area without a camera, just watching his subjects’ behaviour. He will then work out the shot he wants and plan in advance how to achieve it. The penultimate round of the second PDI league competition was judged by Bob Webzell ARPS EFIAP from Rottingdean and there were over 60 entries to get through. Well done in particular to David Nickalls, Anna-Marie Armstrong, Simon Rigby, Liz Fitzsimons, Kevin Smoker, Chris Dawson and Colin Mitchell, whose images all received high scores. The following week we had another lecture, this time on ‘Photographing the Night Sky’ by Pete Colley. This is quite a specialist subject and not for everyone, but Pete certainly knew his stuff and the talk included a lot of technical information. It covered a wide range of techniques from how to get better images of the moon and Milky Way with an ordinary camera, right up to photographing galaxies and nebulae with a star-tracking camera mount and stacking software.

10

In late April we organised a socially distanced photo meet-up at Tide Mills. We had a good turnout and it was nice to meet some of our newer members in person for the first time. You can see some of the photos we took on the club’s Facebook page. Going into the final round of the second PDI league there was everything to play for as the top scores were all very close. In the Standard group Anna-Marie’s two 20-scoring images were sufficient for her to get first place with an unassailable 100 points, the maximum possible. Simon Rigby was second with 95, and Liz Fitzsimons and David Nickalls joint third with 93. It was good to see some of our newer members doing so well. In the Advanced group, Simon Watkins just grabbed the first place from Colin Mitchell, with a total score of 98 to Colin’s 97. Chris Dawson’s two 18s and a 19 were just enough for him to catch Janice Hewitt, giving them both joint 3rd place with 95 points. Exciting stuff and a fun evening. The KCPA exhibition will be going ahead this year, but only for digital images, not prints. There will be a virtual slideshow on YouTube rather than the usual exhibition at the gallery in Faversham. Several SPS members have entered images and we will see whether any of them get accepted. As usual, detais will be posted on our website www.seafordps.org. Photos from top: Painting the Pachyderm by Kevin Smoker; Milky Way Over Namibia by Colin Mitchell; Beauty by Design by David Nickalls; Sedge Warbler with Azure Damsel Fly by Simon Watkins; Sand Mountains by Liz Fitzsimons.

Seaford Town Council

reduce singleuse plastic in seaford

Seaford welcomes four new water refill stations across the town Seaford is an incredible place to live in or visit, enjoying amazing scenery, access to several beautiful beaches, the South Downs National Park, and a fabulous town centre with eateries, shops and galleries to peruse. Seaford Town Council has been working hard to look after the town and surrounding nature for many years to come by reducing the use of single-use plastic with the introduction of several new water refill stations. After the successful launch of Seaford’s first water refill station in The Salts Recreation Ground, Seaford, in September 2019, Seaford Town Council and its Young Mayor of 2019-2020 James Jenkins, have raised funds and installed four new water refill stations throughout the town. James Jenkins did an amazing job of raising funds for the water refill station at Place Lane in Seaford Town Centre, and Seaford Town Council have worked hard to secure funds in partnership with Lewes District Council for the installation of several other water refill stations which are located by the Martello Toilets, Frankie’s Café, and Bonningstedt Promenade beach huts. These stations will give members of the public access to fresh, free drinking water and help reduce the consumption of single-use plastic in the town.

are delighted it has taken off so well in Seaford and more people can now enjoy some of the 14 million litres of tap water we clean and distribute to the town every day, when out and about. It’s great to see Seaford’s Young Mayor James lead the fundraising and for the whole community to get behind the project, especially given the tough year we have had. We have a dedicated team of environmental experts who work with communities across the region to protect at source the quality of the water we all need and schemes like Refill go a long way in helping us do just that. Well done Seaford and we all hope the latest Refill is a roaring success.’ Tom Webster, Chair of Seaford Town Football Club said,’It’s a delight to be able to support Seaford Town Council in their efforts to reduce single-use plastic usage in the town and bring fresh clean drinking water to residents and visitors. At Seaford Town Football Club we actively encourage our players to stay hydrated and understand the importance of hydration for a healthy mind and body.’ A spokesperson for Refill Seaford and Newhaven, said, ‘After 3 years of campaigning and support from STC, LDC and sponsors we are absolutely delighted to see the installation of what is now a network of waterpoints in Seaford. We really hope these can be added to in the future so that we can reduce the scourge of empty plastic bottles which are discarded all over our town and beauty spots. Being able to Refill on the go will enable residents and tourists to show how much they care for our environment. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.’

In order to secure the future success of the water refill stations, they are sponsored by local businesses and organisations to ensure they are maintained and looked after for many years to come. Seaford Town Council would like to thank the sponsors who are South East Water, Plastic Free Seaford and Tom Webster on behalf of Seaford Town Football Club.

Claire Sumners, the Lead of Plastic Free Seaford said: ‘Plastic Free Seaford is thrilled to have been able to sponsor a Refill station. Public water fountains were a part of life but their appeal became outdated when companies and supermarkets started to push bottled water as more appealing and healthier. Cue 2021 and we all know the dangerous threat single-use plastic bottled water has on the planet. We are ever hopeful that every member of the Seaford community will see the Refill stations as theirs to use and inherently environmentally-friendly.’

Emma Goddard, Head of Environment at South East Water, said: ‘We’ve been champions of the brilliant work of the Refill campaign for a very long time so we

Please help make a difference and bring your reusable bottle for a free refill next time you visit Seaford Town, The Salts or the beach.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Seaford and Blatchington Tennis Club

Return to play

We’ve all had a heck of a year, some dealing with more than others – but all having our mental and physical health tested. For some Lockdown has provided an opportunity for reflection, and to prioritise what’s important to them; be that family, health and enjoying the simple pleasures such as being outdoors in nature.

Tennis has returned for our members and we’ve seen the rusty and the energetic return, happy to be back enjoying the sport they love, coupled with the oncourt interaction with others. It’s a social sport, we’ve seven outdoor courts, and it’s amazing for fitness. At Seaford Tennis Club we’ve measures in place around the club to keep hygiene and social distancing in check, but we’re open. We have coaching, team match practice, social weekend events, box leagues and more. Most sessions are more popular than ever, and with depth at all levels, new members and families are soon made part of the club and have others to join in with if they so wish.

Future Federers

27 new Juniors have signed up for our LTA endorsed Kick Starter 6-week course. A great initiative where for just £34.99 4-11 year olds, new to tennis, gain a racket, t-shirt and expert coaching for six weeks. If they like it, they can consider membership – what better way to sample a sport, discover your talent, and develop a lifetime passion?

Team Talk

Sussex Leagues are up and running, and whilst we’ve only played one match across our 5 men’s and 3 ladies teams – we’re boasting a 100% win ratio. Even better, it was against our noisy neighbours the other side of the Seven Sisters. Mondays and Wednesdays see squad players leisurely put through their paces as we prepare for the summer ahead and future bragging rights.

Social Scene

Our weekend social from 2pm is open for members to come down and mix in. A gentle hit for all-ability

16

levels, with further sessions in the week for all different age groups. We’re firm believers that you’re never too old or too new to the game to get started. Inclusive, enjoyable, and with teas and cake thrown in for good measure – we’re keeping our much-loved club traditions alive. How much you mix in is totally up to you – with plenty of courts and club activity, you’ll be able to gain court time with friends or join and make many more.

Coaching Core

Whilst a members’ club, we know we offer a community service. We’re so pleased to have Matt Gollege guiding our coaching team meaning we’re able to support from novice to performance level – a gentle giant, he’ll get your game on the right track from the get go. New members and starter classes ensure whatever your level, you can develop and learn. We’ll also be proactively talking to the schools across Seaford to see where we can support tennis provision as an active part of their curriculum.

Members make us

We’re the sum of our parts. We’re a happy merry band of vastly arraying abilities; we share one thing – an enjoyment of the game. If chasing a yellow furry ball, swinging a racket with a smile on your face, learning new skills, finding your new feelgood, or connecting with your family over a new common interest sounds like a summer you can get onboard with, then why not try before you buy? Come down to our open day on Sunday 4th July 2021, or contact us for more information at www.seafordtennis.com. Photos from top: some of the tennis courts; Club members on one of the courts.

C RY P T GALLERY It’s so good to be back

Art, craft, making, upcycling, fiddling about with some old paints found in the back of a cupboard; whatever you want to call it, loads of people have either found or developed their creative side this past year or so, though some, it must be acknowledged, have found it difficult to focus or just ended up sticking their fingers together. But what nobody has been able to do is suck up inspiration from, or just be transported away from the daily grind by, real, in the flesh, exhibitions. So for everyone at The Crypt it’s wonderful to be up and running again and extremely happy to invite everyone to our programme of shows over the coming months. From 3rd to 9th June we welcome back Colour Wave, an eclectic collection of work by Seaford artists using different media to showcase their skills. This will be the fourth annual Colour Wave exhibition at The Crypt which reflects the success the collective has had with its previous shows. Sandra Chessum, a local painter and part of the Last Minute Artists Group in Seaford, will be displaying her work in our windows from 11th to 25th June, so stroll past and take a look. And finally for this month, Katy Oxborrow will be exhibiting her work from 26th June to 3rd July. Katy builds up her work using paint combined with layers of collage, mark making, text and other mixed media to create evocative canvases which reflect her response to the world around her. The Crypt, like everywhere else, will still have to comply with Covid regulations, so please wear your masks and follow the arrows around the gallery. You

20

can always go round the circuit twice or more times to revisit favourite pieces!

The June Crypt Challenge What is this thing about superheroes? Yes, they can fly through the air, swivel their necks, arms, legs and other parts of their anatomy 360º whilst kick boxing their bitter enemy to the ground or even change shape, and all whilst wearing a strange skin-tight and weirdly colourful outfit, but do they do anything really useful? OK, they have occasionally been known to save the world from some equally strange evil-doer or to snatch a child from the jaws of certain death in a totally unrealistic situation, but can they make an interesting dinner night after night for a family of picky eaters? No! Do they swoop down to write history GCSE essays, compress all the world’s rubbish into a one centimetresquare cube or use their superhero lungs to blow malaria-carrying mosquitoes into outer space? No they don’t. How many times have you wished that someone or something would just appear from nowhere and sort out a particularly difficult world or personal problem? So this is where The Crypt’s June Challenge comes into its own and saves the world, or at least some people you know. What we want this month is a representation, either two-dimensional or three dimensional, of your fictional superhero and his/her/ its powers. What would they do, what would they look like, what are they called? The challenge, as always, is divided into two age groups, children and old(er) people, with a prize for each age group. The closing date is Friday June 25th. Please send us a picture of your entries via email to cryptbookings3@gmail.com before then. If you’ve made a sculpture you could send us a short 360° video. If you haven’t got email, then just pop your entry – or photos of your sculpture – into our letterbox at 23 Church Street, Seaford. Winner or not, we will publish all your entries on our website, thecryptgallery.com, and our social media. Image by Katy Oxborrow

Seaford Music Society This last year has inevitably meant that Seaford Music Society has been unable to present its usual concert season. In the anticipation that we will all soon see a return to some kind of normality, an exciting season of concerts for 2021/22 will be announced in June. Meanwhile we are presenting two pairs of short concerts at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road BN25 2EE in June and July, with socially distanced seating and all prevailing precautions taken, to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for our audience. In the first concerts, on 6th June at 3pm and repeated at 6pm, Sebastian Comberti, cello, and Maggie Cole, piano, will present a programme featuring works by Beethoven: Sonata in A and Variations, David Popper: Romance, and Schumann: the ‘5 Pieces in Folk Style’. In addition, we will be remembering local composer Kenneth V. Jones, who sadly died last year at the age of 96, with his ‘2 Contrasts’ for solo cello. The concerts will last just over 60 minutes and tickets need to be booked in advance from the Treasurer treasurer@seafordmusicsociety.com or on 01323 491601. Full details of the programme and ticket availability can be found at www.seafordmusicsociety.com. Further concerts, given by London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble will take place on 11th July. We look forward to welcoming audiences old and new.

Lynn and Linda are looking forward to presenting a collaboration of their work with a ‘Colour Full’ Display. Lynn Beck is a self-taught artist with a passion for colour. Working in acrylics, Lynn is inspired by the local scenery and well-known landmarks, looking beyond the obvious to capture something unique with an ironic twist. Linda Wells (lindavidual) As the play on words suggests Linda’s hand-felted landscapes are unique, using a wide variety of fibres and threads, providing colour and texture, which are enhanced using creative embroidery techniques. In addition Linda will be showing a selection of oils and mixed media paintings incorporating colour and texture to give atmosphere in her work. Lynn and Linda will have framed and unframed original work, limited edition prints and greetings cards available for you to peruse. Previous visitor comments: ‘Lovely, vibrant, energetic pieces’. ‘Thankyou for a superb exhibition, filled with colour and style’. ‘Beautiful, inspirational, escapism’. ‘Wonderful paintings in a wonderful environment. Art makes the world a b etter place’. We welcome everyone with open arms! Colour Wave at The Crypt Gallery, Seaford is free to enter and there is a car park to the rear (free on Sundays). The Green Fuse A book by botanist Hilary Miflin explores her journey from science to its subtitle ‘Our Deep Connection with the Power of Plants’ Hilary Miflin, who can often be seen tending the Beach Garden, until recently split her time between Seaford and her alpine home in France in the aptly named Vallée d’Abondance. There she developed over 20 years a burgeoning garden that took advantage of south-facing mountain slopes to produce herbal products from lavenders, Melissa (lemon balm), roses, Calendula (marigolds), rosemary and many others. The Green Fuse, which she wrote over seven years, not only explains her energetic, explorative and patient approach to gardening, but describes the personal journey she took to empowerment through plants. What all started with endeavouring to heal her inner self after cancer treatment continued with her realisation that known science only goes so far in our understanding of nature and that now is the time, more than any other, to turn to the plant kingdom to heal not only ourselves but our relationship with our planet. When Hilary and husband Ben were working with Swiss pharmaceutical companies, they bought the house in 1987, gradually replanting where necessary and learning that the old native varieties did much better in the alpine climate than most UK ones. While transforming house and garden in the early years Hilary was treated for breast cancer. The surgery went well but, feeling unhealed in herself, she was told about the Breuss Diet, a 40-day fast which allowed only herbal teas, beetroot juice, clear onion soup and, halfway in, the addition of a daily half grapefruit. This was the turning point. By day 13 she was starting to feel wellbeing, physical energy, elation and light-heartedness. By day 18 she re-read scientific papers relating to cancer and burned them as no longer relevant.

32

With the completion of the diet regime Hilary freelanced from La Vallée d’Abondance, began quilt making and reading Jung, remembering how to remember her dreams. She also embarked on a herbal medicine course and decided to create a herb garden on her mountainside and to find someone who could lead her into Jung’s work and understand what she calls monumental changes that occurred to her while on the Breuss Diet. In 1993 a new position for Ben found them based in London where Hilary found a Jungian analyst close to Kew Gardens in which she would chew over what they had discussed. The lynchpin was volunteering at the Chelsea Physic Garden where she transcribed their 7000 handwritten plant record cards onto a database. Inspired by this garden, she started developing her French one into a herbal heaven, planting her herbs into glistening and vital black soil Continuing the herbal medicine course, she soon found herself at odds with their teaching. While she was looking for a way towards holistic healing; they were pursuing an increasingingly scientific approach. ‘I was a sceptic. The course lacked the dimension of a deep appreciation of nature.’ she told me. ‘There are too many people on the planet and we should be looking for natural remedies and green technology to find a solution. With creativity and imagination, if we go in the right direction we can make choices that can be very much in tune with nature’. So she switched to a ‘greener’ diploma course in aromatherapy, learning about essential oils and growing the herbs in France. She designed a still with the help of two experts, and found two markets in the UK which bought everything she produced. The house and garden in France are now sold and Hilary and Ben, who left London and eventually settled in Seaford 13 years ago, are permanently back in town. ‘We love it here. Lockdown has made us realise what we have, the sea and the Downs. When we realised we were focusing on Seaford, we decided to make that transition.’ All who want to work towards a continued future for our wonderful world should read this book. activities, there was an award presentation at the end which saw every child receive a football shirt, medal and souvenir. The end of the week Seaford Rugby Club came into school offering free sessions. All children that attended for the two days learnt fun rugby skills from the Seaford Rugby coaches. The second week was taken over by Brighton Albion coaches who offered a fun four-day event of sports, games and fun activities. This free event also delivered healthy eating workshops to the children with the schools catering company Chartwells. The event was achievable due to Brighton Albion securing grants and working with the Chartwells area managers who cooked and presented the workshops free as volunteers. The school also utilised some of its own funding towards these events to ensure the costs were as low as possible or free. Andrea Keith, Head Teacher of Cradle Hill Community Primary School said ‘After what has been an incredibly challenging year for many, we are determined to support our children and their families with their emotional and physical wellbeing. We believe working closely with community run clubs and offering these exciting opportunities will support all our children and the wider community. We will continue to keep our school open during most of the school holidays this year and dedicate this time to maintaining and improving physical activity and wellbeing.’ Cradle Hill have also started up after school sports clubs each night after school for the above as well as Saturdays dedicated to Seaford Football Club for Girls for Term 5 & Term 6. She was an Administrator for Hotel Designs Ezine, and most recently has become a District Councillor! Christine lives with her partner and rather demanding rescue tabby cat. What does your role involve? We aim to reduce reliance on single-use plastic and enable everyone to Refill reusables. We set up a Facebook group to share information locally, then started to visit businesses to ask them to advertise that they would freely give tap water. I gave talks to some local organisations, got some press coverage and then began to lobby Seaford Town council about installing public water points. What do you like best about Seaford? The fresh air and friendly people. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here, now I can hardly go out without seeing someone I know.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Relaxing with a book in a very quiet place. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford? I love to walk on the seafront when there are not too many people about and gaze out to sea. I don’t even mind rough weather. What makes you sad? Dumped dog poo bags, discarded masks, plastic bottles and cans – any litter in fact. How do you relax? I can lose myself in a book if it is really engaging. I like to walk on the seafront and on the cliffs. I enjoy fibre arts, but they are on hold at present. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Learning is a lifelong process, there is always more to know and learn. What is the first line of your favourite poem? When I am old I will wear purple… What is your favourite journey? Arriving in Cape Town to see my family – always so moving to see Table Mountain then out in the bush to see the starry skies and wildlife. How would you spend a million pounds? WHAT’S WHAT IN SEAFORD MUSEUM? As we re-open to the public after an exceedingly difficult year, we ask the question: have you ever actually been in the museum? It is always surprising to find just how many local people have never ventured inside the Martello Tower No.74 (the last in the long chain of defensive towers built around the south coast). Walking across the recently installed bridge and stepping inside is like entering a different world… many people liken it to a Tardis. It is so much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. Take a few steps up to the roof where you can see for miles and view the cannon at close quarters. Our flag is flown from here and, on special occasions such as the Queen’s birthday, we raise the Union Jack. The main collection is downstairs below the promenade, and our lift makes this easily accessible. You will find so many different things down here, something for everyone. We house the second-largest collection of Neolithic flint tools ever found in the UK. These were dug up in the High Street when essential services were being installed. The history of Seaford is on show together with a record of the changes to the path of the river Ouse and coastline over the centuries. We have an astonishing collection of domestic equipment, radios, televisions, telephones and much more. Our Edwardian shop is being rebuilt but is nearing completion when it will re-join our other displays: a Victorian kitchen; the Ritz cinema, an air-raid shelter, Camerons, Wynns, our bathing huts and much more besides. Our wartime kitchen features a kitchen dresser that was bought at the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1936, then exported to Germany with its owners who had to leave it behind when they left Germany in a hurry! Amazingly, when they returned after the war they found that their house had been used by German officers and their dresser was still there in good order. It was used by the family for many years.

We have a large collection of local drawings by the local artist H.H. Evans, who managed to draw the most amazingly accurate pictures of local houses and landmarks despite having only one arm! An amazing feat. There are many stories behind so many of our displays. As stewards will tell you, the most commonly overheard remark is ‘My mum had one of those’. It really is a stroll down memory lane. We have had to make a number of adjustments due to Covid-19 but every care has been take to keep people safe. Come on down – it really is an amazing place! Open Wednesdays 2 -4pm, Saturdays and Sundays 11-4pm.

Sussex Wildlife Trust

Adonis Blue

On Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Malling Down nature reserve, just fifteen minutes’ walk from the centre of Lewes, something is stirring. Something rather beautiful. Something rather… blue. The Adonis Blue must be in with a good chance of being crowned our most beautiful butterfly. The male’s dazzling, electric blue wings are an insult to all other butterfly species who consider themselves blue. Believe me – you haven’t experienced blue until you’ve watched a male Adonis Blue fly past. And, like many other famous Lewes residents, our Adonis Blues also have a colourful and somewhat odd life history. During the larval stage of its life cycle, the Adonis Blue caterpillar exudes a sugary sweet secretion and, amazingly, sings an enticing siren’s song. This drives local

ants into a frenzy and they fall under its spell. With its sugar-drunk, loved-up ant admirers in tow, the caterpillar cruises the Lewes Downs with the ants protecting it against parasites and predators. Each evening, when the caterpillar retreats to the soil, the ants bury it – effectively tucking it in for the night. It’s amazing what devotion you can get around these parts in return for a drink and a song! When it’s time for the caterpillar to pupate, the ants stand guard over the chrysalis too in an underground chamber, and when the adult butterfly emerges they escort it to the surface. Without so much as a thank you for their loyalty, the butterfly unfurls its wings and deserts them for the skies above – no doubt leaving the ants wondering how they’re going to explain themselves to the queen when they get home. The existence of this wonderful butterfly is only made possible due to the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s careful management of Malling Down. The Trust’s rare breed sheep, which you can see from Lewes High Street, graze the reserve to ensure the correct habitat is maintained for this rare species. An important factor in the Adonis Blue’s life cycle is heat, and if the grass here gets too tall the temperature at ground level drops. Without the grazing management, the fantastic downland habitat would disappear, along with all the amazing species that depend on it. Trees for Seaford volunteers – back on the verges! We were delighted that the lifting of Covid restrictions in April has allowed us to get back outside to resume our ‘Tender Loving Care’ sessions for the trees we have planted. This includes pruning, checking stakes and ties, replacing mulch mats etc. It’s been so nice to get outside and see everybody in person! So far we have been working in Bodiam Close, Belgrave crescent and Seaford Golf Course. Look out for our new tree labels which are recycled from old tin cans! If you spot any problems with our trees do get in touch. That’s not to say we have been idle during Lockdown. On the contrary there has been plenty of planning and discussion going on, albeit in a virtual world! Lots of our volunteers have been helping developing the sister “On the Verge” group. This is a very enthusiastic grassroots volunteer project to connect people and wildlife pathways throughout Seaford. Trees don’t grow in isolation; not only do they need a bit of protection and support from us, but they also need enough rain, nutrients through the soil, and a whole range of life forms, from microscopic mycorrhizae fungi, to insect pollinators, to birds and mammals to spread seeds. You can read more on our website, and that of Seaford Environmental Alliance. Trees for Seaford is working as part of the Seaford CARES Project, led by Seaford Community Partnership, with its project vision for: ‘An engaged, knowledgeable Community, where residents and decision-makers understand the threats posed by the climate and ecological emergency and are actively collaborating to reduce their carbon footprint and build personal and ecological resilience.’ It’s so important to keep talking to our partners and work together. We recently met up with representatives from Seaford Town Council and their contractor Idverde to work together to protect our trees. Did you know that trees need their bark more than we need our skin? Humans can survive a scrape or a cut quite easily. But severe damage to a tree’s bark can set back its growth or even kill it. We are therefore so pleased to

get agreement from Idverde that an area will be left unmown around our trees, to protect them from damage. We are also delighted to support Seaford Town Council’s plans this year to leave areas of our parks and green spaces unmown. This will save the council money, and we will be watching with interest to see what flowers grow in the longer grass, and what insects can be found. If you enjoy watching our green spaces get ‘wilder’ do let the council know that you support them! A group of us were recently delighted to meet Keith Sacre from Barcham Trees. Keith is the UK’s foremost expert on urban tree planting. He advised us on planting and tree care techniques, also on different species we could plant in the future. We feel very privileged to have him advising us. And last but not least, did you know that the first week of June is National Hedgerow Week? Planting more hedges is also on our To-Do List, so do get in touch if you can help, or would like to know more! Photos: Trees for Seaford volunteers; Tin can labels.

5 key messages for carers and individuals with dementia… It seems like our world is beginning to open up. The vaccination programme has given us a glimpse back into everyday existence, almost like we remember it, and the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown is enticing us with thoughts of hugs, contact and conversation. For us at Clifden House we are cautious and excited. We operate at our best with the engagement of families and loved ones, interactions between individuals with eye contact and touch, but we are also aware that things may not quite be the same again for a little while longer. When you care for someone, it is easy to worry, and the Covid crisis has given us plenty of that. However, it is always better to turn that concern into positive, progressive action that helps us all to not simply manage through this difficult period, but even to thrive. We remain cautiously optimistic that we can build on the amazing focus on the vulnerable around us that we have all shown over the last year, and we wanted to share some advice from the Alzheimer’s Society in cooperation with several research departments of UK universities.

Stay safe and well

Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by issues with your health, whether Covid-related or otherwise. Do continue to be aware in company of the twometre rule if you remain vulnerable, and please seek and accept help from those you know and trust.

Stay connected

Though you may be overwhelmed by Zooms and telephone calls, it has truly never been easier to keep in touch with those friends and family that may otherwise be physically distant. Knowing that we can reach out and interact helps us feel closer to those who are important to us.

52

Keep a sense of purpose

Completing jobs and pleasurable activities allows us to keep hold of a daily routine that is proven to be beneficial for our physical and mental health. These can be hobbies or simple tasks such as tidying up, preparing food, or making sure we don’t miss our favourite TV programmes.

Stay active

Daily exercise in a manner that you enjoy lifts the spirits. If you can, even 30 minutes direct exposure to daylight, even on a cloudy day, can help you rest better at night and assist your natural body rhythms.

Stay positive

We will all by now have stories of testing times over the past months, but the key thing to remember is that we are not alone in this. We all have those stories and therefore all share this experience, with its ups and downs. You don’t need to struggle on alone and support is out there. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

seaford afternoon flower club

Our April competition was entitled ‘Blossom Forth and Burst into Flower’ and once again, some of our members have sent in photos of their inspiring designs.

Looking back to this time last year, I see from the Seaford Scene entries that we had been enjoying some beautiful warm weather, and that the gardens were colourful and many plants were flowering ahead of their normal time. Sadly, that has not been the case this year. April temperatures were below average, and whilst the sun has shone, the winds have been unseasonably cold. Hopefully, summer is just around the corner! Nevertheless, at last restrictions are being relaxed and we have events to look forward to, not least the

Let’s All Support Seaford’s Small Business As we emerge out of Lockdown, there’s one thing we can all do to help Seaford recover from the pandemic – and that’s to shop locally. Independent traders and the shopping areas across

the town are the lifeblood of our community, generating interest and footfall, and providing local jobs. But after an incredibly challenging year, small businesses in our town need help to stay afloat.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

Social responsibility

The momentum is there as the lockdown measures are being eased; we need to keep it going as the economy opens up again. If you’re still not convinced, here are three reasons to support Seaford’s small businesses.

Small businesses in our town are rooted in the community we all serve, and they often support local charities, schools, and sporting clubs. Shopping locally is an easy way you can say thanks to them for lending a hand to the small organisations that make a big difference across Seaford and help maintain our community spirit.

It’s character building

Good for the environment

Small businesses, and the people who run them, bring character and personality to Seaford. They make our area feel special and unique, rather than sterile and anonymous.

Thanks for reading.

If we give all our business to online multinationals, what will become of our high streets? Answer: they’ll become ghost towns.

The Seaford Youth Forum has created a wonderful project called ‘Use it or lose it’, which encourages young people to use local shops and helps them understand the value and importance of community. It’s well worth checking out, and the project runs until June 2022.

Shopping locally helps to reduce the carbon footprint. We’re very environmentally conscious, as are many other businesses in the town. Since we opened our doors in 1987, we’ve always done all we can to support the local economy, and that’s something we’ll continue to do.

Martello Rotary Seaford Martello is still busy supporting the community and this month’s update focuses on the environmental and the work that we are supporting both financially and with active participation, and some of the groups that we have financially supported. Trees for Seaford

Despite being hampered by Covid 19, Martello Rotary continues to work online with Trees for Seaford in their ongoing programme for planting trees around the town. While new planting will now have to wait until the autumn, the maintenance of trees planted over the past years and the surveying of the roads to decide on the location for new planting is now a priority. When you see us out on the street, give us a wave!

Environmental Survey

By the time you are reading this article, Seaford Community Partnership and Martello Rotary will be continuing to evaluate the results so far received for the survey which can still be found on the Facebook page called Martello Rotary Seaford. The survey can also be accessed directly on the website https://www. surveylegend.com/s/2znx. It is not too late to take part if you haven’t yet had your say. This is one result of the ongoing teamwork between the two organisations, to try to address both the need to mitigate the impact of climate change, and also to enhance the appearance of our townscape. It focuses on six of the Local Green Spaces protected by the Seaford Neighbourhood Plan by finding out how we can enhance their contribution to our well being and enjoyment of our green heritage.

Community Grants

We are pleased to let you know that working in conjunction with Seaford Rotary we have given

58

£500 to Seaford Little Theatre https://www. seafordlittletheatre.co.uk/ to help them improve their air conditioning system, and £500 to Sailhaven, https:// www.sailhaven.org/ (a local organisation based in Seaford/Newhaven, developing the infrastructure to help disadvantaged youngsters learn the skills and participate in sailing). If you are involved in a community group or working to help the community and need financial help don’t forget we are here to support you if we can. Grants are available on a discretionary basis to support organisations and individuals that will be of community or environmental benefit, or aim to raise aspirations, engender community spirit, or assist those in local need. You can download Grant Application forms from either of the two local Rotary web sites: martellorotary.org.uk. or seafordrotary.org.uk.

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup Happy Birthday to Us!

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch (S&BNHW) turns 35 this year, making us one of the oldest NHW Associations in the UK. To celebrate, we are planning a bumper EXPO in September with lots in store to celebrate our community and the neighbourliness that makes us one of the safest towns in the UK to live in, work in, or visit. We are also one of the best subscribed Associations in the country with well over 10% of our households registered members. We are visible, active and relevant, which keeps crime rates down, and community spirits up. Far from being stuffy and bureaucratic, our NHW success stems from our core ethos of Great Neighbourliness. The way we, as a town, have rallied and supported one another through this ghastly pandemic evidences this spirit. Proudly, Kindly, Seaford. Keep an eye out for the dates of the

!

September Birthday party – we are holding off setting anything in stone until we are certain that we can safely meet in person.

We Do Things Differently

S&BNHW is a constitutioned association and a registered charity. This means we get to do things our own way. We consider all Seaford residents automatic members of the NHW, and our work as a committee is for the benefit of all residents. You will soon notice a face lift to the NHW signs in your street – NHW will be even more visible and as a result, all of us benefit. You can join NHW on a national level at www. ourwatch.org.uk which is totally free and automatically registers you with our scheme. You can also become a registered member of the Association and your subs contribution will help to keep us ticking along. Subs are ridiculously affordable at £3 per household per year or £2 per household per year for a senior household. Joining is easy at www.sandbnhw.org/join.

Notice of our AGM

Like last year, our AGM will be held virtually on Zoom on 23rd June 2021. Please keep an eye out for the meeting notice in your email inbox. If you haven’t yet subscribed to our mailing list, please do so at www. sandbnhw.org so that you don’t miss out on any invites or alerts. We never spam and you will not receive unnecessary mail from us, ever.

MEMBERSHIP FORM: To Join or Renew, please complete this form and return to The Treasurer, S&BNHW, 37 Church Street, Seaford, BN25 1HG.

Extended Renewal Season

With all the chaos of lockdowns, endless isolating, and the disruption of Covid, we took a view that you had more important things to think about in 2020 and 2021 renewal seasons than the NHW and your subs. There is no rush, but we will need to catch up with renewals and if you haven’t already set up an autorenew on Paypal or on our website, then this is the time to do it – it takes no more than 1 minute to set up and then you can forget about it. It will autorenew each year until you cancel. Visit www.sandbnhw.org/join and select the membership you prefer. Then follow the screen prompts. This method saves us a ridiculous amount of time in admin, running around with cash and cheques. If you prefer to do it the old way, there is a tear off form on the opposite page for your convenience.

Scams are Rife

Without a doubt, digital and cybercrime far outstrip any other type of crime in our community. Being scamsavvy is your first and best defence to this type of crime and we strongly encourage you to take the Trading Standards Friends Against Scams online course, which is free, and become a Friend Against Scams, sharing that knowledge with others. It is outrageous how clever most scams are and how insidiously scammers inveigle their way in, to empty bank accounts and devastate lives. Scamming is not just a phishing email or a dodgy link in a text message. Some scammers take months to work their way in, building trust and developing a relationship with their victims with no other purpose but to steal as much money as they can. We often read about people losing tens upon hundreds of thousands in a phone

scam and we wonder how on earth someone could lose that much money – well when you are elderly, lonely and some charlatan befriends you over a course of months on the phone, it starts to make more sense. This is why being a Great Neighbour and being scamsavvy is so vital – keeping an eye on our vulnerable family and friends and sharing your scam-savviness with them will help protect us all. The statistics of scam crime are astounding, and our elders are at most risk. Our most precious neighbours are scammed to the tune of £5 to £10 billion pounds a year. Yes, billion. Most who have been scammed are too ashamed to report the crime, so our best and only defence is being well prepared and knowledgeable. You can access the course here https://www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/

Report Everything

It seems like a drudge when scam calls, texts and emails are a daily event, but the more scam attempts that are reported, the better our Cyber Units at the Police are able to work together to stamp out this crime. Most of this crime is cross border so our Police Cyber Crime Units need our reports to better map the crimes and where they originate. You can report telephone scam fraud most easily at https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ and text scams and email scams can be forwarded as follows. For text scams forward the whole message to 7726 which sends it to the National Cyber Security Centre. Email scams can be forwarded to report@ phishing.gov.uk. There is a wealth of information on the National Cyber Security Centre website which you can visit here https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/suspiciousemail-actions It is such an exciting time with our brilliant NHS getting us all vaccinated and what looks to be a glorious summer ahead of us. Please be safe when out and about. Remember that your safety comes first – make sure windows and doors are secured, and your front and back doors locked even when at home. Keep purses and wallets well out of sight and do not leave your bags and backpacks unattended. Keep being the Great Neighbours that you are – be generous with your smiles, your encouragement of others and your kindness. See you in September for our Birthday Expo – we look forward to hugs and laughter (and cake) aplenty. Be safe.

Love your Wild Verge? Love your Wild Front Garden? Put a BLUE heart in the ground made out of re-cycled materials to show that you CARE for nature. A blue heart symbol, made out of recycled materials, is staked in the ground over the area being re-wilded. This communicates to neighbours and friends that re-wilding is in process (and that it is not just the owner or council being lazy!). The campaign is now partnered with Keep Britain Tidy and Eco-Schools England. The campaign promotes the re-wilding of our gardens, parks, road verges and school grounds. It suggests that a part of this ground is set aside and left to grow through the summer. #greenhavensnetwork #urbanwilding #wildergardens #BlueHeartCampaign https://bluecampaignhub.com/

We are lucky to be beside the seaside, which saves us from the lowest temperatures, but those vicious north winds have caused some damage, and young shoots may have been nipped by the frost. Let’s hope June will be kind.

the m

th on

Will it be flaming June in 2021? Will we be basking on the beaches? Or will the weather try to spoil our fun? According to the Met Office, winter 20/21 as a whole, and despite that -23º in Braemar, was not far from average. But surely the same cannot be said about the spring, especially the exceptionally cold April that brought air frost somewhere in the UK every single morning of the month. Those chilly nights continued into May, bad news for gardeners, especially those in the frozen north.

BEE Friendly

In Victorian and Edwardian times magnificent herbaceous borders were found in country house gardens throughout the UK. These borders relied predominantly on herbaceous perennials, plants that die back to a rootstock each winter before bursting back into life again in spring and flowering throughout the summer. Nymans Garden in West Sussex has splendid examples that were planted in Edwardian times giving maximum colour impact in the spring and summer when the family were in residence. Nyman’s ‘summer borders’ are now a layered mix of those herbaceous perennials with added grasses and blocks of annuals for extra colour and interest. They are big and bold, but you could have a scaled down version. Choose several hardy perennials for the backbone of your border; the design should aim to provide interest from April to October e.g. achilleas, asters, astrantias, delphiniums, euphorbias, heleniums, lupins, peonies and phlox, while hardy geraniums come in dozens of varieties. One of my favourite perennials is penstemon, a long flowering bee-loving plant in shades of pink, mauve and purple. Bulbs, grasses and annuals can be added to the scheme to produce a crammed mixed border – no room for weeds! To maintain the border, clumps of congested perennials are lifted and divided in autumn, followed by a good mulch of manure to keep the soil fertile. Winter interest is created by leaving some stems and seedheads intact until new shoots start to emerge in early spring. Grasses especially can look good in winter. Establishing a stunning herbaceous or mixed border requires lots of patience, loads of manure, and plenty of plants, and don’t forget plants supports. It’s a big project but the bees will love you, and that wow factor will be worth it.

By the time you read this our delightful garden within the Crouch should be open again – at last! Since it became virtually a secret garden last autumn, a whole winter and spring have gone by but, nature coupled with a few very hard working volunteers have somehow managed not only to maintain it but give thought to adding further vibrancy and colour. So, two weeks before the official reopening, older plants were being split and either planted back to share their bounty in the beds or placed in pots for the sales table. Thus, there are all sorts of beauties, like irises in dark purple and white forms potted up to tempt visitors who may have spotted the velvety flowers of the purple one in a sunny border and coveted them. Katie, busy coaxing a Clematis alpina to spiral around a tree against the adjoining Peace Garden wall, pointed out a salvia that was left out over winter to see how it got on in this sheltered spot. ‘It survived!’ she said with surprised relief. The clematis was planted about two years ago and has been slow to grow but has now reached the dizzying height of 1.5m! Moving on to the telephone exchange wall, Katie next tackled a leaning tree echium that must be the great, great grandchild of one we were given several years ago, attaching a sturdy piece of rope around it and our majestic palm. Having got the echium vertical she turned her attention to the wall and pondered on the possibility of a wisteria there. And back to those great, great grandchildren, their progeny are growing well in various places including the raised beds. Katie said that while the baby echium seedlings had been potted up and all had succumbed

to the late frosts and vicious winds we experienced earlier this year, the naturally seeded plants were doing well. A case of nature knows best? Having said that, what is a garden but a wo/man-made thing? So the community garden was being assessed and where areas in borders clearly needed a little tlc they were being regenerated. For instance, some crocosmia were being removed and the space replenished in this case with scabious. Eryngium was being planted elsewhere. Not all plants can be grown at the garden so Allison, Katie and Val were to be seen wheelbarrow-ing in a variety of plants including eryngium and the scabious which were to be divided. Awaiting Allison’s green fingers were pots of tomatoes, peppers and chillies, which she was to plant out in prepared beds in the poly tunnel. And talking of tomatoes, the garden was last open at the very tail end of our tomato season, so here we are again, reopening at the start of a new cycle of cultivation. After keeping those gates shut for seven months, we confidently expect they will be wide open this summer to welcome back long-serving volunteers, maybe even some new ones, and of course lots of visitors eager to stop by on Wednesday mornings. We so look forward to meeting you all again and swapping gardening tips. Let’s just hope the classroom kettle hasn’t forgotten what it’s for! The Garden Team Photos from top: Val wheels in plants destined for the garden and the sales table; Iris and tulips offset each others’ charms; Katie spirals a clematis around a tree trunk; The pink of the stepover apple blossom contrasts prettily with the blue of forget-me-nots; Young tomato plants await transfer to the poly tunnel bed; Tree echium restored to an upright position.

Driftwood Garden opening again this Summer All being well, government guidelines permitting, Geoff Stonebanks is hoping to open his multi-awardwinning garden again this summer from 21st June, the final date in the government’s roadmap. Geoff tells us, ‘We are planning on three openings for the National Garden Scheme, on Tuesdays the 29th June and 13th July, and Sunday 1st August! However, please note that entry on these dates will be by pre-paid tickets ONLY, booked in advance on the scheme’s website for £5 each, www.ngs.org.uk. Please do not just arrive at the garden as you will not gain entry.’ Driftwood remained closed throughout 2020, due to the impact of Covid-19 and Geoff tells us he really missed his regular visitors. Readers may have seen the garden last year though, as it featured on both BBC South East Today and ITV Meridian news. It will not be business as usual though in 2021, as all NGS visitors will be booked into six individual sessions in the garden that will allow a maximum of 14 guests in any one hour from 11am through until 4pm. It is regretted that this year, there will be no access to the house (or bathroom) to any visitors, and a limited selection of cakes will accompany the teas served by Geoff and his team, direct to the tables in the garden. As usual, there will also be a small range of garden art for sale too. Geoff goes on to say: ‘In addition to these three timed openings, visitors can also contact me direct on 01323 899296 and arrange private visits on most other days between 21st June through until 12th August. I’d be happy to cater for special events if discussed and arranged beforehand. Admission on these days will be £8.50, with all the entry going to Macmillan Cancer Support, with refreshments extra.’

This year, all visitors will be able to see a few new additions in the garden since its last opening in July 2019 and be able to appreciate the planting with fewer visitors inhibiting their movement around the plot. Full details of all the events this summer at Driftwood can be found at www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk There are links on the homepage to book for the National Garden Scheme days and a new facility to book through Macmillan Cancer Support for other days too, if required. It is hoped that the Macmillan Garden Trail will take place over the weekend of 24th and 25th of next month, with more on that in the July issue.

food packaging, retail and PPE, and organisations have backtracked on their commitments to tackle single-use and scale reuse. We’ve seen retailers, chains and brands ban reusables, despite the evidence from Greenpeace and over 100 scientists publicly stating they’re safe to use.

World Refill Day

16th June 2021

World Refill Day is a global public awareness campaign to champion reuse over single-use and prevent plastic pollution. Together with our partners and Refill schemes around the world we’re creating a global movement of everyday activists, NGOs and sustainable businesses who are uniting behind a shared vision – a world where everyone can eat, drink and shop without the pointless plastic! As a result of the pandemic, we’ve seen a huge increase in single-use plastic – particularly from take-away

On 16th June, we’ll be calling on individuals, businesses and governments around the world to join the refill revolution and say goodbye to single-use plastic for good. We’re proud to be part of the Break Free From Plastic global community and will be aligning World Refill Day to support, and amplify the We Choose Reuse campaign. In the last few weeks we have been delighted to see the installation of the water points we campaigned for. A big thank you to Seaford Town Council plus all the fundraisers and sponsors who have made this possible. We now have a chain of three on the seafront and our past Young mayor James Jenkins raised money for another one at Place Lane. With the first one at the Salts intalled before the pandemic we now have five in our lovely town open all day, every day, as well as support from the businesses who will fill your bottle from their premises. Don’t forget Scoop and Weigh, Gabriellas/ Walbrins and The Health Food store who will fill your own containers as you buy lose produce/products from them. Morrisons has now re-offered a bring your own container on their delicatessen, butchery and fish counters as well. Do let us know via our email below if you run or know of a business that wants to join the scheme or will now offer refills for coffee etc. They can sign themselves up with the app or website and add the coffee cup icon. Please don’t forget you can download the Refill app here to get the location maps to find Refill points https:// www.refill.org.uk/get-the-refill-app/ and also register your business and others if you have their permission. If you want a Chilly’s bottle or food container which makes a great gift, you can buy one of these yourself to keep your lunch and drinks hot or cold from refill.org.uk/buy-a-bottle/ and Chilly’s make a £10 donation to the Refill campaign. Seaford Beach Gets a Makeover Thanks to Seaford Shingle Shifters! When Seaford resident, Chris Conil, put out a post on Facebook to ask for volunteers to help clear shingle from parts of Seaford’s promenade, he wasn’t prepared for the huge response from local residents offering up their services! When Lockdown restrictions eased accordingly, Chris put together teams of six people each to start clearing from the Edinburgh Road car park all the way to the western end of Bönningstedt Parade. Seaford Town Council is swept away by the generosity and hard work of the volunteers that undertook this gruelling work and would like to thank Chris and his volunteers, nicknamed the ‘Seaford Shingle Shifters’. The clearance work they have done has helped

ensure more of the promenade remains stone free and accessible for all. This is invaluable as the warmer weather approaches and the beach will start to see a stark increase in visitor numbers. When approached about what prompted him to take this on, Chris explained: ‘Every year Bönningstedt Promenade is subject to high tides and storms that lash onto the walkways, leaving difficult areas to manoeuvre. The job of the Environmental Agency is a massive one, shifting truck loads of shingle from one end to the other. Thanks to them our beaches are safe and well maintained. This year Seaford has experienced many more visitors due to Covid-19, who wish to walk and exercise along the Seafront, the difficulty being, shingle underfoot piled up on the promenade. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our small group of Volunteers who helped Sweep clean Bönningstedt area. Seaford Town Council supplied the brushes, we supplied the people power, so everyone can now enjoy the delights of Seaford bay, knowing the promenade is safe and ready for the summer, until the next storm arrives.’ Photo: Some of the Seaford Shingle Shifters in action.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Seaford Rotary

Return of the Rotary Boot Fair

A chill spring morning with blue skies greeted the early risers who made their way on 18th April to the first Seaford Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair of 2021.By time the gates opened to let the eager stallholders on to the Martello Field, some had been waiting over an hour. The sun warmed the field and soon a constant stream of potential customers to investigate the wares on sale at the 75 stalls were being checked and counted in at the entrance by Rotarian John Owen. It was apparent that during the recent COVID-19 lockdown some stallholders had been clearing out their attics. Tables on some stalls were full to overflowing, with the surplus goods for sale scattered and laid out on the grass. There was the usual eclectic myriad of items on sale, including several sets of golf clubs (had the owners given up during the lockdown?), luggage cases (possibly the result of overseas trips not currently permitted?), a set of four high-back children’s chairs, more than the usual number of pushchairs, plus some wooden curtain rails. The most popular stall appeared to be one selling vinyl records. Various charities also welcomed the opportunity to raise some much-needed funds and had set up stalls; these included Seaford Bonfire Society, The Royal Society of St George as well as Seaford Town Council raising funds for the Mayor’s charity initiative. Normally the period between fairs is 4 or 5 weeks, but as the April fair was delayed to mid-April, the second fair occurred only two weeks later on 2nd May. It was noticeable that several of the stallholders had been present at the first Rotary Boot Fair, and still had Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

stock from their lockdown clear-outs to sell. The next Seaford Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair will be held on 6th June. We hope that the weather is fine and dry and that we shall see you there. Further Seaford Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs will be held on 4th July, 1st August, 29th August and 19th September.

Bluebell Walk, Arlington

The Bluebell Walk at Bates Green Farm, Arlington which was first opened in 1972 opened this year for a 5-week period between 12th April and 19th May. To enable the Walk to open Honorary Rotarian John McCutchan put in place a series of measures to ensure social distancing. He introduced a booking system to limit the number of visitors to not more than 65 visitors every hour. Further, the only walk available to see the vista of wood anemones and bluebells was one way round Beatons Wood, an ancient wood of oak and hornbeam, with a separate entrance and exit. Thus, on 22nd and 23rd April, Seaford Rotary were at the Information Kiosk located at the farm entrance gate to check and ensure that only visitors who had booked and paid entered at their assigned time. Rotarians Janice Vince, Frank Thompson and John Windsor at the Information Kiosk awaiting visitors The restrictions imposed also meant that there were no mobility scooters or petting animals in the animal barn. Neither was it possible for Seaford Rotary to serve any food or drink including their usual array of homemade cakes and other delicacies in The Bluebell Barn. Each spring, Beatons Wood, provides a landscape of colours changing with the increasing warmth of the days. The timing of when the bluebells blossom is however dictated by nature, and according to the Met Office ‘April 2021 had the lowest average minimum temperatures for April in the UK since 1922’, so when Seaford Rotary manned the Information Kiosk, bluebell

leaves were still emerging through a white carpet of wood anemones. There were some patches of blue where English bluebells could be seen but white was the dominant colour above a sea of green leaves.

Over the Rainbow Fancy Dress Walk

Come down to the Seaford promenade on the afternoon of Sunday 20th June to see the ‘Over the Rainbow Walk’. The walk organised by Seaford Rotary on behalf of the Mayor of Seaford’s Charity Initiative will see participants, who are sponsored to raise funds for their charity or organisation, in colourful outfits, some possibly in fancy dress, walking along Seaford seafront from the Martello Tower to Seaford Sailing club and back. We hope that you will come and join in the fun and give them your support. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members. For more information contact us on http://www. seafordrotary.org.uk/contact.php. joined, a virtual version of the Club was formed on BBO. Members started to play virtual Bridge in June 2020, initially on Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 7pm. It proved very popular and Tuesday afternoons at 2pm were added in October 2020.

ANYONE FOR BRIDGE? Readers may be aware that for many years Seaford had two bridge clubs. In 2019 the clubs talked about merging and this became a reality from January 2020 with the Bridge club now being known as the Seaford Bridge Club, meeting on Tuesday afternoons in the Wave Leisure, Sutton Room and Wednesday and Friday evenings at the 60+ Club. The Covid-19 pandemic, however, brought a halt to face-to-face Bridge from Friday 13th March 2020! Obviously, this was a huge blow to our members and like many many other Bridge players throughout England, and indeed the world, online casual Bridge games by our members using the BridgeBase Online (BBO) platform became very popular. The club committee actively sought ways that members could continue to play Bridge together as a virtual club, and with the assistance of the English Bridge Union, which the club

It is not perfect and cannot fully replace the social aspect of face-to-face Bridge, but it does have its fans, and has kept the Bridge Club alive during these very trying times and allowed members to keep in touch and enabled them to maintain and even improve their bridge skills. The future of face to face bridge remains uncertain but the Club is in regular touch with the EBU as to the requirements necessary for that to restart at some point. That said, it is likely that virtual Bridge will continue to have a place for the future, perhaps mixed with face-toface bridge. We have always been a friendly club and welcome new members, happily providing support and assistance to those not familiar with online Bridge. If you are interested or have questions please visit https://www. bridgewebs.com/seaford/home.html where you can leave a message on the website to which one of our committee members will reply.

East Sussex Charity Boost for the Homeless

With the horror that the first lockdown brought, a small group was born. I was approached by two lovely local people, to be one of three administrators belonging to a group of 10 members, who were aiming to sew masks and scrubs for the NHS. Within three months the number of members had grown to 1,000. As the need for masks and scrubs diminished, and with winter fast approaching, I felt the time for me to leave was imminent. I had a sense of urgency to help another cause – the homeless of ‘Surviving the Streets’, being the aim. I left the group, and with a few like-minded members, formed a brand new one – East Sussex Charity Boost for the Homeless. The group focused on what we can do to turn a negative situation into a positive one. Although a small group, each member has contributed, either by knitting hats and scarves, sewing Christmas gifts for the homeless or buying items. It makes my heart almost burst with pride to be friends with these people. They have been so selfless in buying items and holding raffles. One of our younger members and her mum obtained thermals, waterproof coats, waterproof boots, etc for the less fortunate – the number of items is now in the hundreds. In recent months everyone has rallied together, including a young lady who is undertaking her Duke of Edinburgh award, to fill 43 hampers of relaxing items and snack bars for staff in the COVID-19 wards, staff at the mortuary and at Eastbourne District Hospital, and also the paramedics.

We also sent out over 100 vet beds and carrier bags full of treats to four local animal charities. The ages of these amazing ladies and one chap range from eleven up to retired, and to show how selfless they are, the saying I have heard several times by members is: ‘this group helps us, as much as it does others’. Seaford Seafront Doggie Dos and Don’ts Observing Seaford promenade’s dog ban by-law from 1st May – 30th September Seaford is well known for its attractive and unspoiled seafront. The beach is enjoyed by visitors all year round but in particular during the warmer weather and summer season. In order to ensure the comfort and ease of all beach users, a dog ban by-law was put in place from 1st May to 30th September on certain parts of the seafront. Seaford Town Council would like to remind all dog walkers visiting the seafront to please take care in observing the dog ban areas, which differ for the promenade and beach itself, and are in effect from Frankie’s Beach Café leading west to the start of Bönningstedt Promenade.

There are signs along the promenade displaying the designated areas either for ‘Dogs on Leads’ or ‘No Dogs Allowed’. Dog owners are also reminded to please pick up after your pets; this allows all users to enjoy the beach safely. To report an issue with dog fouling or breaches of the by-law, please inform Lewes District Council’s Neighbourhood First team online at https://www. lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk/environmental-problems/ neighbourhood-first/ or report it through the District Council’s ‘Report It’ smartphone app.

Seaford Inner Wheel Goes International Tri-annually we hold an International Convention and this year we were due to meet in Jaipur India. Needless to say we were unable to do this in 2021 and the Convention was cancelled last year. The Indian organisers would not take this lying down, so they got together with The International Committee and decided to run our first ever convention on line. It may sound easy but what a lot of planning and work went into creating our very first virtual convention, and in so little time. Two of our members from the Seaford club took part, and we really enjoyed it. By holding Notice: This issue of Seaford Scene has been distributed by an independent delivery company. Please note that Seaford Scene is not responsible for any other publicity material that is delivered at the same time as the magazine. If you have any issues regarding the delivery of Seaford Scene, please contact MA Distribution www.madistribution.co.uk

the convention online, the number of members who participated, increased by well over 25%. The voting was done simultaneously throughout the world (fortunately at BST!) and was certainly as well if not better organised than during past years. The whole conference could be enjoyed at any time to suit each delegate. There were also a number of rooms to visit, shopping, virtual tours of the major Indian cities and learning centres from sari folding to yoga. There was also the ability to chat with other Inner Wheel members around the world. Instead of speakers this year we were treated to dance displays from a number of Eastern countries. We would normally meet socially twice during the convention, but unfortunately this was of course impossible this year. To be honest, having spent eight hours per day looking at my screen I did not think I would have been up for it!! Inner Wheel will celebrate its century in 2024, and we have been awarded the convention that year in Manchester where it all began. Lots of hard work for us all, but we are all delighted. Seaford CARES UPDATE To re-iterate: Early last year the South Downs National Park Trust submitted an application for £2.5 million to the National Lottery fund for the Ouse Valley CARES project. It was called CARES to stand for Climate Action, Resilient Ecosystems and Sustainability and also to remind us ALL that we have an urgent need to look after our environment which is suffering from climate change and loss of so many plant and animal species because of destruction of their habitats. And to do this will require that we all change the way we live on this Earth – that is what sustainability represents! The Ouse Valley CARES project covers the Ouse Valley – from Barcombe, through Lewes, to Newhaven and then to the coastal towns of Peacehaven and Seaford. We all live alongside the Ouse river, which has flooded in the past and could certainly do so again in the future, causing so much damage (for those of you who remember 1986 and Lewes floods). Climate change is causing the ice caps at the North and South Poles to melt and sea levels to rise. Those communities inland will be affected by river floods and we in Seaford with our 4-mile beach and unprotected coastline will be subjected to flooding from the river, the sea and storms. The communities involved in the project are all designing and planning things we can do to lessen the effects of climate change. These are often quite small things but together they can add up to something significant. And that is important: the accumulative effect of so many individual actions. The climate on planet Earth is changing – as David Attenborough and many others have been telling us, because of our actions. We have burned so many fossil fuels – coal, gas, wood – to make electricity, heat our homes, drive our cars, power our factories, fly our planes etc. that our air is changing. It contains more carbon dioxide than it used to and that makes it heavier, more ‘blanket-like’ and so the surface of the Earth is warming up. Then the ice melts etc… But there is another thing that goes on too – the weather gets more extreme – more storms, more heat waves,

108

more ‘Beasts from the East’ cold spells. Things get out of balance. So what can we DO? It seems a daunting task. The Seaford CARES project is part of the bid and has been developed by Seaford Community Partnership who’s aim is to make Seaford a better place to live, work and relax in – and if we are successful in being awarded part of this National Lottery grant, it certainly will be! While the months have been flying by, Seaford CARES members have been beavering away, dreaming, planning, Zoom-ing, talking, inviting others to join in… and making progress with the six projects we have chosen to be our part of the lottery bid – all of them inviting community involvement: The biggest and most ambitious is to treble the size of the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve. We plan to do it by hopefully purchasing the extra land; by active community engagement in developing and managing the final scheme; and by making a significant contribution to offset the impact of climate change by re-wilding the area and reducing the effect of flooding. The planned reserve will stretch from the river, all the way across to Bishopstone station area.

l

At the other end of the beach towards Splash Point, we have the Cliff Gardens project, where we want to create a ‘Climate Change’ Beach Garden to replace the current un-made-up road by Southern Water’s Pumping Station. It will be created so that residents and volunteers are fully involved in its design and eventual maintenance; Seaford Head School will be able to use it as an educational resource; information boards will raise awareness of climate change issues; a cycle path will be created joining existing ones and there will be ready access for the disabled. Also by incorporating the meadow in the adjacent pump field, biodiversity will be increased by the creation of a

l

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

‘green corridor’ of plants and hedgerows between the town and the Downs. Throughout the town a network of Trees, Hedgerows and Mini-Meadows will be created. This ambitious plan will involve so many people in the community working together to provide rich habitats and green corridors for wildlife; and a resilient community that understands and is taking steps to mitigate the effects of climate change. We are creating a strategic plan for increasing tree and hedgerow cover, and flowering plants; working closely with stakeholders, including the Seaford Environmental Alliance and local schools; and mapping and surveying the town’s road verges and green spaces. To set this project rolling, we are creating pilot schemes in three areas – schools; hedgerows and mini-meadows.

l

Friends of Green Spaces: Seaford has a number of designated Local Green Spaces. Martello Rotary Club has adopted this project to create a Friends Group for each Local Green Space identified in the Neighbourhood Plan by conducting a survey of residents, and considering for each space a Management Plan including re-wilding, tree planting, etc. Already their survey has gone out to over 500 residents and schools are also involved in giving their ideas for development of these sites.

l

The Cycling Project to reduce our dependence on cars: we are establishing the current best roads for cyclists (especially for the less experienced cyclists and children) to enable them to use quieter roads and bridal pathways to link with the National Park and to the town centre. Routes will be marked on physical and electronic maps and will be way-marked. This involves working with consultants, LDC, ESCC and Sustrans.

l

A diverse project to encourage walking: we are working with community groups to develop a strategy which includes physical and electronic maps and a database of existing Twittens and footpaths; and creating Health Walks and incorporating the existing Heritage, Blue Plaque and Slater marked walks.

l

All these projects are not just enthusiastic ideas in our heads but ‘ready-to-go’ projects, all planned and costed! This entails a lot of work. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

But of course all this work is only part of what is needed for a successful Lottery fund application. The other hugely important part is to motivate and encourage EVERYONE to be aware of what we all need to do and to want to be part of it. So much has been going on in Seaford for a long time before this Lottery bid came into existence – all those environmental groups working relentlessly for a cleaner environment: Plastic free Seaford, Refill Seaford and many others. There is also the recently formed SEA – Seaford Environmental Alliance, whose main aim is to raise awareness of the issues of climate change and promote sustainable living. We are delighted to work alongside them and acknowledge their huge contribution and efforts. We are optimistic that this lottery award can make all our aspirations more attainable. Then there is the Seaford Town Council Climate Change Working Party who has declared Seaford a Climate Emergency Zone. We all know the challenge we face and in the spirit of Community are planning a Climate Action day – A GREENER SEAFORD on 1st August. If you want to be part of this community action: to offer your expertise, enthusiasm, creativity and handson work, please let us know. There is so much to do and it involves every single one of us. Remember, what you do will make a difference. Please contact: seapartners@gmail.com and we will respond. Hilary Miflin (Communications Seaford CARES) Photos from top: The Pump field – with careful mowing regimes, a Sea Meadow for use as an outdoor classroom for schools; The Cliff Gardens project: from camper van park to educational garden, cycle track and foot path to the sea.

Seaford u3a News The coronavirus and lockdowns have taken a toll on the happiness index of most people, and the long cold spring has done little to dispel the gloom. We think of things as they used to be and we have a long way to go to get back to what we used to take for granted as ‘normal’. Fortunately, there are more things to look forward to as summer approaches. Seaford u3a is getting ready to reopen with a summer buffet party and our usual coffee mornings as soon as we are allowed to do so. Meanwhile our members enjoy free Zoom talks, some by our own members which reflect their interests, and some by professional speakers. Members who are unsure about using Zoom are given support by those who lead on technology in our u3a. The coffee mornings are continuing by Zoom. Early in April we had a presentation from an experienced retired police officer and detective who is also a tour guide in London. The subject was the poisoning and murder of Alexander Litvienenko. We looked at his life, death and the reasons why he was murdered using the radioactive nerve agent Polonium 210. The talk was very clear and well illustrated. There was the opportunity to ask questions and discuss points raised. We found out what happened to his family for example. Our espionage speaker who presented the talk on Alexander Litvienenko will give us another treat in July when we will hear about the mysterious death of a codebreaker and agent found dead in strange circumstances in 2010. The talk which followed could not have been more different. Jenny Mallin is a published author whose great, great, great grandmother Wilhelmena Hardy was Anglo-Indian, born in India in 1828. Jenny told us about her family tree and how all the women of her family from that ancestor were born and lived in India. The link between them all was a handwritten recipe book which was started by Wilhelmena in 1844 to which recipes were added by each generation. As the women had visited and lived in diverse areas of India the recipes reflected those found in different areas of that huge country, which at the time seemed to have little in common by way of ingredients and dishes. Most of the recipes had a strong Indian influence because the Anglo-

Indian women would have Indian cooks who added spices and sauces to English dishes. A recipe for spiced scrambled eggs sounded delicious and was known as Rufty-Tufty. The recipe book was more than just a cook book – it was an exercise in social history which reflected an era gone by. Wilhelmena was alive in the time of the East India Company, before the British Raj, and the history of this one family ran through until the British were beginning to be unwelcome in India in the 1940s when the speaker’s parents left India for England. A family legacy which the speaker had commemorated in her talk and a book which she has published. Seaford u3a is continuing to host Zoom talks at least once a month. For more information about Seaford u3a (particularly pre-Covid) see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned expert, or you have another gift, there is a place for you within this project, all are welcome. We want to help people to do something for nature, maybe letting their gardens be a bit wilder and in some cases just adding a few features to help even more. We totally understand that your garden needs to be suited to your family and your needs but it is amazing what you can achieve with just a few changes. We also understand now that formal gardens and non-native plants are also able to be amazing for wildlife. Together with friends, neighbours and hopefully whole streets we can create corridors for nature that is struggling to find space due to development and climate change. Let’s be the change we want to see, the time to act is now and together we can step up for wildlife. Please contact Jessie Rodriguez on infowildergardens@ yahoo.com or via Greenhavens Network on Facebook. This Greenhavens project is funded by the Enjoolata Foundation.
