Well, what an extraordinary and difficult time we have all been experiencing – the coronavirus pandemic has affected everyone in so many different ways and life may never be the same again. Thankfully, there seems to be some glimmer of hope as, at the time of writing, the government has lifted some of the restrictions and we are now able to meet up with people from other households, albeit on a one-to-one basis and keeping a safe distance, whilst some businesses are resuming work and following the government’s safety guidelines. I’m so pleased to be printing Seaford Scene again in order to help and support Seaford’s community. All the businesses that have advertised within this magazine will need extra help right now, so please continue to use and support them as life gets back to some normality. Don’t forget the Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team is on hand to help you if you are finding things difficult, see page 18 and please continue with your kindness, consideration and fantastic community spirit, which will get us all through this and out the other side! VE DAY with the SEAHAVEN BRANCH, THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE

Matthews (Falklands RN Veteran) who carries the Standard for HMS Glamorgan. They were there to show their support for the day and respect the memory of the men and women of Seaford who died during the Second World War, service personnel as well as civilians victims of bombing of he town by the Luftwaffe.

£400 was collected for the Forces Charity, Combat Stress by Chairman Major Bob Peedle MBE outside his Seaford home. This vital charity was to be the recipient of the proceeds of this year’s Veterans and Armed Forces Day, which has been cancelled. The event is usually organised by the Seahaven Branch along with Seaford Town Council for the whole of the District of Lewes and surrounding towns and villages. This was just one of the activities of branch members on this 75th anniversary of VE Day, 8th My 1945. Many entered into the spirit of the day with flags and bunting.

Local Charity CTLA Keeps the Wheels Turning to Help Members Newhaven based Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA) is a local charity which provides affordable and fully accessible transport for those who do not have access to private transport and experience difficulty in using public transport. The charity delivers over 80,000 passenger-journeys a year, enabling predominantly but not exclusively older and more vulnerable members of the community to continue to live an independent lifestyle, and gain access to social events and other everyday goods and services that others take for granted. The charity’s staff and volunteers are on the frontline in helping

many local people combat the devastating effects of loneliness and social isolation. However with the advent of the coronavirus epidemic, most of its members were advised to go into shielding. CTLA’s response to this was to set up emergency delivery of essential food shopping and prescription medicines to the doorstep of those who could not get out on and travel on their buses. In the past 8 weeks CTLA has made over 300 individual deliveries to the doorsteps of members and even seen an increase in the number of people becoming members. The staff and volunteers have also been busy working with Kempton House volunteers to deliver hot meals to the doorstep of those who would normally attend a lunch club too.

Reed Warblers and Sedge Warblers

I bless the rains down in Africa

It’s amazing how a song can transport you someplace else. I can’t hear ‘Africa’ by American soft-rockers Toto without drifting back 35 years to a school disco in Plymouth. Right now I’m sat by a Sussex reedbed listening to two songs simultaneously pouring from deep in the reeds. These songs also take me back to my childhood and Saturday mornings spent birdwatching beside similar reedbeds in South Devon. These summer singers are two small brown birds; the Reed Warbler and the Sedge Warbler, and their songs make me feel strangely nostalgic for a place I have never been; Ghana, where these warblers will have spent the winter before returning to Sussex each spring. Reed Warblers are rather plain whereas Sedge Warblers sport a streaky back and stripy head with a heavy ‘eyebrow’ that fixes them with a permanently intense expression. But these identification features aren’t important because you’ll rarely see these secretive birds. But, boy, will you hear them! Because when they start singing, they just can’t stop. The Reed Warbler’s song is a loud, repetitive stuttering chatter of jumbled phrases that just doesn’t just doesn’t seem to just just just just doesn’t just doesn’t seem to seem to go anywhere. It sounds like one of those warehouse-sized 1950s computers churning out data. The Sedge Warbler’s song is similar but much more energetic and erratic, with added harsh ‘churrrs’ and whistles, giving the overall impression that it urgently needs a straightjacket and heavy medication. These complex songs have a simple message; ‘Hey ladies, my territory is so rich in insects that I don’t have to spend much time hunting for my food; I can waste my time just singing’. It’s the loudest, longest, craziest song that will seduce a feathered female. Sedge Warblers raise their family in a no-thrills nest low in vegetation but the Reed Warbler weaves an incredible

In August, after raising their families, their warbler thoughts drift back to Africa where drums echo and wild dogs cry out in the night. The warblers will gorge themselves with aphids and, with a fat belly full of fuel, take off from Sussex and head over Iberia, North Africa and the wide Sahara to Ghana; a 3,000-mile journey. I always imagine a Ghanaian naturalist pausing momentarily each autumn to observe these returning visitors. Do his thoughts drift to the Sussex riverside where they spent the summer? It’s been a while, but what about the good stuff? Well, it has been a while since I last wrote on these pages, since you had this little magazine arrive on your doorstep, since you even needed to consult this magazine about what is going on in Seaford. Well, we might not quite be at the point of getting out and doing whatever used to be normal, but we have got to the point where the Seaford Scene can safely be written, published and distributed. One small step... It has been a whirlwind few weeks and months with so many life changes for all of us, not one of us has escaped and I am sad to say so many people have suffered in so many ways. On a personal note, I’ve learnt so much from the lockdown period. I have seen amazing community spirit – we might have been social distancing but we were creating an even stronger community in the process. Neighbours shopping for their neighbours or checking in on their older, more isolated friends and neighbours. Friends helping out other friends, lending tools/equipment to help with the DIY that had no real excuse not to be done now we were home for more than six weeks and people stopping in the street, to cross the pavement to allow for social distancing but doing it with a greeting and a smile, that made a huge difference to all of us. Every Thursday at 8pm Seaford has come alive with clapping and recognition for ALL the key workers keeping us safe. An incredibly small gesture for a huge sacrifice, but the one thing we could do to show our thanks and respect.

In May we stopped and remembered those before us who had gone through a much tougher fight and war to allow us the freedoms we usually have. On VE day I saw the community spirit of Seaford shine, people decorating their houses with flags and bunting, local craft groups and artists creating posters to help decorate homes and gardens or even creating craft activities for children. People still followed the social distancing rules but they came together to remember, to never forget, and to show support for the here and now. People put their chairs on their driveways and played music, sang across the balconies, had drinks over garden fences, shared memories, and enjoyed the sunshine and community spirit, at a safe distance. I wonder how many other towns can be proud of this. How many other towns can be proud to say that during a worldwide health crisis they stood together, supported the local shops on the high street, helped their neighbours, smiled at someone as they crossed the road, understood that the children running too close on the beach were really too young to understand? There are too many words for this magazine to express what this experience has meant to people – it’s been life changing or that awful word we’ve heard so much from the media, ‘unprecedented’. At times, for far too many, it has been traumatic and ruined lives and livelihoods in so many ways. Yet, despite the horror of the situation it has shown me the amazing community of Seaford, how lucky we are to live in a town that cares for those around it and how proud we should be of getting through it and still showing a smile at the end of it, however briefly that smile may feel. Seaford Sessions Seaford Sessions are so sorry that they can’t bring you live bands at the moment but, as soon as the government’s Coronavirus guidelines allow it and venues are open again, be assured that they’ll be back bringing you the best of live folk, roots and Americana bands. Thunder and Rain and the Slocan Ramblers, who were due to appear this year, have been re-booked for 2021, and any tickets already bought will be carried forward to new dates. Speaking of which, a huge thank you to every last one of you from SS volunteers for not requesting refunds – it really helps with what otherwise would be a big administrative task. As you know, artists and venues are really struggling at the moment so why not support them and give

yourselves a treat by listening to some of the many online concerts, such as: Village Stage Lunchtime Live (Facebook Group) – an online Lunchtime Live Concert Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12.00 to 12.45 with artists from around Sussex and the local area. The Green Note – this excellent London venue normally puts on gigs from many of the same artists that Seaford Sessions put on. They have live-streamed shows every Wednesday and Friday at 8pm. Tiny Desk Concerts – many of you will already be aware of the Tiny Desk Concerts which host musicians from all around the world and in many genres playing an intimate half-hour concert at the offices of NPR. Check out their back catalogue for some absolute gems! Meanwhile they are releasing Tiny Desk Concerts From Home – the same spirit with strippeddown sets, an intimate setting, just a different space. Tel: 01323 899054 Little did we know in the middle of March when a call came out to reactivate what was essentially an old flood defence emergency group what was about to happen in our town as the country had to face the spread of Covid-19. We hope you are all doing well and coping with the continuing lockdown. As we see a few changes we know that many of you are abiding by the governments advice. Thank you to all who are volunteering so magnificently to make that even possible. Lewes District Council is astounded by what we and the other Covid-19 support groups have been able to achieve so rapidly in just 8 weeks. After being inundated with worried residents at the launch of our phone line (some to check we are really here) the calls in evenings and weekends have now reduced substantially. Owing to this we have decided to reduce the phone line hours to match the times most of you have been ringing for shopping and prescriptions (which are the main requests). There have been well over 1,000 of these dealt with as I write, and by the time you read this it will be many more. You can also contact us on our website https://svet. proffer.org.uk and fill in the Request form at any time. In addition, Listening Ear is now up and running via SeaFriends, working in partnership with SVET to provide a check-in and chat service for isolated and lonely Seaford residents during this time. SeaFriends is a partnership of established local charity organisations who have been working together for the last 18 months to address social isolation and loneliness, to establish a befriending service and support people back into community activities. When we became aware of the fantastic work that SVET were doing during the Covid crisis we offered our help to set up and run the Listening Ear arm of the support they are offering. Moving forward we will continue to train and support volunteers and match them with requests from members of the Seaford community ensuring they have regular contact through this challenging time. Social isolation and loneliness are cross generational and have a negative impact on physical and mental health. A weekly call for a chat can make all the difference to someone who would not normally talk to anyone. We are a voluntary service of friendly local residents, so we cannot provide professional advice or mental health support, but we can offer a friendly chat and time to talk. Their support meant that we could purchase more PPE equipment, launch the ability to take card payments at the doorstep and also provide gift vouchers for volunteers to use to do the shopping. I sincerely hope you are well and managing to cope with this situation we find ourselves in. From my point of view there is certainly no better way of distracting myself than being absorbed in making a piece of art or craft. Indeed, there’s nothing more satisfying than completing a project and being able to stand back and say ‘I made that’. Having chosen to spend my time over the past year and half organising art exhibitions rather than exhibiting in them, having the time during our imposed lockdown to get my hands on a piece of clay once more has been most therapeutic. As for the Sussex Arts Collective our next COLLECTIONS 2020 exhibition at The Crypt Gallery is due to begin on 4th July. We have registered for ARTWAVE 2020 which is now due to start on Saturday 5th September, but as with everything at the moment these dates are subject to change. So keep watching posts on Facebook and our website www.sussexartscollective.com. This month’s spotlight turns to Mark Preston, who epitomises the Sussex Arts Collective’s guiding principle to produce work using traditional skills in a contemporary way. So many of our visitors have bought or thoroughly admired his instantly recognisable work.

Collections 2020 SPOTLIGHT: Mark Preston

Mark was born in Yorkshire and after completing his photography degree, at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, he moved to London in 1991. He first worked as a photographer’s assistant and worked with many photographers on a wide variety subjects, before starting a career as a freelance photographer, specialising

in still life projects. With the arrival of computers and particularly Photoshop, he transitioned to a more illustrative style of work. Since then Mark has worked as a digital illustrator for book publishers and magazines around the world, a digital artist for several national newspapers, a children’s illustrator working in 3D and most recently as the Creative Director for an American toy company, where he designed a range of award-winning emotional learning children’s toys.

Mark moved to Sussex in 2001 and it was there that he began to explore the local countryside, and particularly the Ashdown Forest and the South Downs National Park, with his dogs and his camera. It was not until 2017 that he began utilising this large library of photographs to create pieces of art for his first exhibition at a local art fair in Uckfield. To create his work Mark digitally enhances his photographs with paintings, drawings, textures, and found objects to create the final artwork. Some pieces are more literal interpretations of the places he has photographed, while others are more conceptual or graphic in their approach, but all seek to evoke the beauty, drama, and atmosphere of the landscapes around him. He uses the coordinates of where the original photograph was taken as the titles of his work so they may be visited or found on Google Maps. Since starting to work full time as an artist Mark has exhibited all across the South East and London. Seaford Kurlers Hello Seaford Sceners. As I am writing this article at the beginning of May, I have no idea how we will be dealing with the coronavirus when you read this article. Lockdown may have relaxed and we may be able to exercise and have more movement in our daily lives. When leisure centres are allowed to open for business will depend on the government ruling and guidelines. This will then determine when Seaford Kurlers can return to their sport of new age kurling at the Downs Wave Leisure Centre, Sutton Road, Seaford. At this moment, even if Wave Leisure is operating on limited opening, it’s difficult to see how we can play New Age Kurling and exercise the social distancing. requirements. Personally, I cannot see Seaford Kurlers returning to the sport until September 2020. When I have more information than I know now, I will contact all Seaford Kurling members and Seaford Scene. The Art of Home SchoolING Most children love to draw or paint. While so many of us are stuck at home it’s a great way to keep them occupied too. A few friends wondered if they should be encouraging more ‘mind-improving’ activities such as maths and English worksheets. Art tends to be viewed as a ‘bolt-on extra’ in school. But art is so much more, and along with music should be given a much more prominent role within education. Drawing, painting and sculpting help mental, social, and emotional development. Creating art boosts our ability to analyse and problem-solve. As a conscript teacher in the ‘school of mum and dad’ it’s easy to fall into the trap of ‘right and wrong’ when we would be better to remember that art should be about the process rather than the product. As children manipulate a paintbrush or pencil, their fine motor skills improve. As they mix colours they learn about proportions, and when they experiment with different media they dabble in science. Most importantly if a child feels good about being able to experiment while creating art, it boosts their self-confidence. Children who feel able to try things and make mistakes develop more creative ways to think which extend beyond their artwork. Lots of parents don’t feel comfortable with art, because unlike maths there isn’t a ‘correct’ way to do it, or they feel they have to intervene to make things look ‘right’. So, I’ve put together a list of art websites that offer tutorials aimed at the children themselves rather than at their parents. favourite site by a country mile. Lindsay teaches live sessions on Facebook a couple of times per week. The tutorials then stay on the page so that children can access them at any time. She’s an encouraging, enthusiastic teacher and paints along with her sons, who are funny, lively and very normal, and this is the big bonus for my own son, who is missing his friends and the banter of the classroom. We probably underestimate how much of the important stuff in a school day doesn’t seem important at all. The silly incidents and funny anecdotes our children bring home are woven into the tapestry of their day-to-day existence, and at the moment that part of their lives is on hold. Lindsay and her boys are a breath of fresh air in our house. The art is great, and she also leads adult classes for when the kids are in bed. Cannot recommend this one highly enough. Debra Grant

Exclusively open to ALL 10 – 16 year-olds living in Seaford Over the 50 years of its existence, the museum has collected an eclectic mix of artefacts and documents. We want to bring that collection right up to date and we are launching The Living History Project on Saturday 16th May 2020. It is so important, for the future, to have first-hand information from people living though these unusual times. Most of the focus on the television has been on adults, but our project directs the attention on young people, those who are currently 10 years old and up to and including 16 years old (years 5 – 11). This is an opportunity for their voice to be heard. To share their experiences, both good and not so good. To make their mark on history. Every few weeks a Talking Point will be sent to those who have registered: they will contribute their thoughts in various ways: written, photographs, pictures. Full guidelines are given for each Talking Point. We will be building a real insight into

their lockdown – how they kept entertained, how they exercised, the impact on their education, friendships and more. This valuable first-hand viewpoint will provide invaluable information for an exhibition and further research on how one group of Seaford’s young lived through lockdown and its impact on them. Staying Friends with Your Back in a Time of Challenge There’s never been a more important or challenging time to take care of our own and each other’s health as now during the coronavirus crisis. Even as the lockdown gradually eases, social distancing and shielding looks set to remain a feature of our lives for some time to come. Now looking after ourselves is also looking after each other. Our wellbeing is everyone’s wellbeing, staying apart to stay well, a strategy of caring for others. And so, with doctors, nurses and essential workers, their health is our health. This is surely a strong message for our time. How do we then look after ourselves when during a prolonged period of social distancing, personal and professional help of therapists may not be readily at hand? My first port of call, as a Pilates teacher is my practice mat – a place where I’ve always been able to find a sense of calm and inner resource as well as capacity to be with whatever is felt. As not everyone is able to access online classes, here are some tips for self-care using Pilates movement that I hope you too may find useful to calm feelings of anxiety or if, as is common for many people, you have overstrained your back.

Calm and Re-balancing Breath

Either sitting or lying: 1. Rest one hand on your belly, the other on the centre of your chest, observe your natural breathing for a few moments, then breathing in through your nose and slowly out through your mouth, become aware of the flow of its rise and fall. There’s no need to exaggerate or force your breath, and if you start to feel lightheaded, stop and rest. 2. Then place your hands on the sides of your ribs, feel a gentle expansion as you inhale. Exhale slowly through pursed lips or as if blowing gently through a straw. Rest. Repeat this a few more times. How symmetrical is your breathing? Does one side of you breathe more? Press your hand very gently against the side that seems to breathe less, as you breathe in and slowly out for 2 or 3 breaths. Rest your hands down, observe your breath, how is it now?

After gardening, repetitive movement, heavy lifting, or prolonged sitting or standing in a static posture, don’t ignore back twinges that may be a sign of trouble brewing. Here are 3 MOVES TO REBALANCE AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK:

Shoulder Bridge

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet parallel and hip distance apart on the floor, with arms alongside your body. Start by gently rocking your pelvic backwards to flatten your back against the floor (exhaling) and then forwards to arch away from the floor (inhaling) – repeat slowly at least 10 x to ease your back into movement. Then on an exhale push down through your heels down and lift your bottom off the floor (try not to arch your back or push your ribs out). Breath in. Exhaling roll down along your spine to return your back to the floor. Repeat 5-10x. Going up into bridge strengthens the glutes. Rolling down lengthens the back muscles, and develops awareness of the relationship between the abdominal muscles to the back. If you get a cramp in the back of one thigh or both thighs you want to engage your buttock muscles more.

Hip Roll

Bring your knees and feet together, and open your arms wide to your sides on the floor. Take a full breath in and on the exhale turn your waist so your pelvis rotates as the knees trace over to the diagonal, turn your head to the opposite side – only turn as far as you are able to keep the back of both shoulders on the floor. Inhale, and on the

exhale return to centre using the abdominal muscles in your waist. Repeat to the other side, then alternate sides slowly and with control 10x.

Table Top Arm & Leg Lift

Roll to your side and come up to kneel on all fours with hands directly under shoulders and knees beneath hips. Breathe in deeply, on the exhale unfold and extend your R leg back with the L arm forwards. Inhale, return to all fours. Repeat 8-10x alternating sides. If this is too challenging, break it down – just extend one leg at a time. Then just the arms. Add challenge by holding the extended position for 2-3 breaths. Points to watch out for: stay in the middle, without swaying the hips to one side; keep your head and belly lifted so your back stays like a table top and doesn’t arch or round; breathe throughout each movement. Lots to work on! Tip for painful wrists – place a rolled towel under the heel of each hand or elbows on top of some blocks. Please do not attempt these exercises when your back is in acute pain. Walk about first, as soon as you’re able, and only once the pain has eased off should you attempt these moves. To condition your back and help it to be more resilient these exercises are a start. If you want to learn more about managing back pain consider joining a regular class. This guidance however, is in no way intended as a substitute for medical attention. Stop if you are in pain. If symptoms persist you should always seek advice from a medical professional even during a lockdown. Karen Hall is a qualified teacher of Pilates,Yoga and Exercise for managing low back pain. It seems as if there is as big a mix of age groups as there is a mix of bikes, some of which are real classics (the bikes not the riders). Hopefully the reduction in traffic, cleaner air quality and a greater appreciation for where we live will inspire people to keep riding. That’s where Cycle Seahaven can help. We are not your usual ‘competitive’ cycle club and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We are more about having fun and enjoying rides with others. The Club caters for road riders, tourers and off-road riders of all abilities. In ‘normal’ times we have a very busy calendar of organised rides, led by our wonderful team of experienced ride leaders who arrange all sorts of outings including ladies’ rides and family rides in the forest. Yes it’s June – the month for brides and roses and English strawberries. Time for tennis, cricket and garden viewing, but unfortunately our topsy turvy world will be limiting these activites. June however is not suspended – we can enjoy its glory in our parks and gardens, and there is plenty to do. Garden centres have reopened, and bedding plants are available in the supermarkets, so let’s get potting. Fill every container you can find with rainbow colours to lift the mood and brighten every corner. Chelsea has been cancelled, and Hampton Court is deferred, so let’s create our very own show gardens. Red geraniums, orange marigolds, yellow begonias, green ivy, blue lobelia, indigo petunias and violet fuchsia. Endless choices, let’s grow a rainbow.

Mowing is essential garden maintenance, and mowing produces clippings, but what to do with them? Putting them in a green bin will remove the problem, or a trip to the tip, but it’s a shame to dispose of them. Properly treated, and mixed with ‘browns,’ the clippings (greens) will produce excellent compost for your borders. For full information check out Composting on the RHS website. Alternatively if you cut the lawn regularly, and the grass is dry, you can remove the collector and let the clippings fall back into the lawn. The dead plant material is broken down by minibeasts and microbes to make plant food. Fresh clippings can also be used as a thin layer of mulch (1-2 inches) on your borders. NB Avoid composting cuttings following chemical weed control.

Dear Members, at the time of writing, the Government has updated us regarding the gradual lifting of the lockdown, and it’s clear that it will be some time before life returns to ‘normal.’ With this in mind the Committee and I have agreed that it would be prudent to further cancel all social meetings and outings up to mid-September, hopefully reconvening for the social evening on 24th September 2020. This means that the annual show will NOT go ahead this year. We suggest that for those of you that have paid fees for Cambridge and/or Wisley, we hold on to them, as we will rebook both of these trips for next year. If however, you wish to have your monies returned, then please contact Pippa Logan in the usual way and I can arrange for a cheque to be sent to you. For all members who have paid subs for the year 2020, these will be carried forward to cover 2021 as a gesture of goodwill, and in the hope that next year will be better and brighter for all of us. National Garden Scheme This summer is seeing a total lockdown of all private gardens that would normally open for the National Garden Scheme. Here in Seaford there should have been the Seaford Trail, with a record nine gardens opening for the scheme this season, plus Geoff ’s own garden, Driftwood, which would have opened five times for the charity this year, in recognition of its 10th year of opening for them. One of the brand new gardens that should have opened on the Seaford trail is pictured, 5 Clementine Avenue. The National Garden Scheme is reaching out to people to help support the nursing and health charities for which it has raised money since its foundation. With all gardens closed and no income coming in, the National Garden Scheme is looking at alternative ways to raise funds to make up the shortfall in its donations, which has inevitably resulted from the Coronavirus crisis. The campaign has been led by Britain’s most famous gardener, Alan Titchmarsh. Commenting from his garden in Hampshire, he said, ‘Gardens offer us a sheet anchor in times of turmoil, never more so than this year. The National Garden Scheme uses the joy of gardening and garden visiting to reach out and help all kinds of people.This wonderful organisation has been inviting folk to open their gardens and raise funds for nursing and health charities for more than 90 years. It’s given away more than £60 million and during all that time the gardens have never had to close, not even during the Second World War. That is until now.’

In order to try and combat this, the charity has been asking it’s garden owners to shoot short films of their gardens, looking their best, and to submit them as virtual tours. The films are being hosted on the National Garden Scheme website www.ngs.org.uk and via social media links and in the weekly eNewsletter distributed to supporters. New films are added on a weekly basis. Virtual visitors are then asked to consider donating money to the charity in recompense for their virtual visit. The donate button is on their home page. At time of writing, Driftwood is the only Seaford garden to have a hosted tour, but there are many others from across Sussex that you can view too, like Ocklynge Manor in Eastbourne or The Garden House in Brighton and Butlers Farmhouse in Herstmonceux. You may also have recently seen the short films on both BBC SE Today and ITV Meridian News about the National Garden Scheme’s virtual tours, both news channels had segments with Geoff, filmed at Driftwood. These can be viewed through his own website, www. driftwoodbysea.co.uk via the media page. If you want to support the National Garden Scheme you can also TEXT a donation to them by entering 70085 and typing GARDENS 5, GARDENS 10 or GARDENS 20 where the amount you wish to donate is typed after the word GARDENS, making sure a space is left between the word and the amount. Seaford Afternoon Flower Club Like all other clubs and organisations the Seaford Afternoon Flower Club has not been able to meet since February and we donâ€™t know when our next meeting will take place. We had to cancel our AGM meeting in March when we were going to make Easter baskets. I dare say they will keep until next Easter! In the meantime we have been emailing and telephoning members to keep in touch. We have still set our club competition themes and members have been emailing photos of their designs. With so many members self isolating, we have been fortunate that the weather has been so good and that there has been such a lot of colour in our gardens for making arrangements. Seaford Community Cinema When lockdown first began way back in March a bit of wishful thinking saw Seaford Community Cinema thinking it would be reopening sometime in June. Sadly though, that is unlikely to happen and our summer programme will have to wait until such a time as Government guideIines permit normally distanced seating again. Be assured, however, that the team that brings you films and live-beamed theatre is continually talking via Zoom to consider when we will be able to return. The answer to that one remains of course that we won’t be in the Barn again until it is considered safe. Inner Wheel Club of Seaford is proud to be part of an international organisation, International Inner Wheel is launching a Covid19-Disaster and Vaccination Fund that is to raise money to help with the immediate effects of the pandemic and to help with a long-term solution. At the end of April, six members of Seaford Inner Wheel were looking forward to attending the Inner Wheel Conference in Belfast. Understandably this gathering was cancelled. It is hoped that a good number of members will be able to attend next year’s Conference in Blackpool. Members were looking forward to the Annual Inter Club Tea, which was going to be held at East Dean Village Hall in May. Arrangements had been made for catering, hosting guests, guest speaker and welcoming members from other Clubs throughout the District. While we were disappointed we weren’t able to hold this very enjoyable annual event, we fully understand the reasons why and look forward to next year! Our Welfare Officer, Maureen, does an excellent job for us in providing health and welfare reports regarding our membership. Members are able to support each other where needed and to date we are grateful that all our members are safe and well. On a District level, our District events have been cancelled in the short-term. Once we are ‘back to normal’ members are very much looking forward to joining in the Club’s activities and more.

Tree Flowers Following April’s Spring Flowers article, we continued in partial lockdown in May as our local trees and shrubs came into flower. Some garden wildlife even paused for Ed to photograph this time. A thank you to eagle-eyed readers who spotted the transposition of Alexanders with White dead-nettle in Spring Flowers!

Bursting with leaves, the three-hundred-yearold elm dominating our garden (right) is a hybrid, possibly commemorative. Pandemics, however, are not restricted to people. A young elm overlooking the public footpath from Bishopstone to Seaford has succumbed to DED (Dutch Elm Disease) photo right). The sunny and dry spring weather should, nevertheless, help to slow down the spread of DED.

So called because of its edible black berries appearing later in the year, the white flowers make a nice drink! (photo left).

A purple spring flower for a change, it is pollinated by bees and butterflies. (photo right).

We include this (photo left) because woodland herbs have to flower quickly in spring before they are shaded by trees. Alias Ramsons, the odour is distinctive!

Restrict access to health-related news

It’s important to keep up to date, but more than a few of us have found that the need to check and recheck has become compulsive, feeding our anxiety. It’s better for our mental health if we limit the amount of time we spend reading or watching news to one or two periods per day.

Try not to seek constant reassurance It’s a natural human response to seek reassurance. Reassurance makes us feel calmer for a while. It’s difficult to provide reassurance in a situation where

no one really knows all the facts and things change from day to day. In this situation our brain can create a feedback cycle where we seek reassurance then have to re-seek it as the news shifts and makes us anxious again. In this way we become reassurance junkies, needing more and more. If you feel like this, it’s time to take action.

Exercise

Go for a walk. Jump. Dance. Shake your arms. Vigorous movement helps rid your system of adrenaline, which will help you feel calmer.

4-7-8 breathing

You can do this exercise either sitting or lying down. Place one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Take a deep, slow breath from your belly, and silently count to four as you breathe in. Hold your breath, and silently count from one to seven. Breathe out completely as you silently count from one to eight. Try to expel all the air out of your lungs by the time you reach eight. Repeat until you feel calmer. Louise Addison

Could it be fake? It’s ok to reject or ignore requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

Contact the bank immediately if you think you have fallen for a scam and report it to police.

Criminals will often use the publicity around events such as the Flybe going into administration or even exploiting the current Coronavirus crisis to trick you into revealing personal or financial information. Such events provide an opportunity for the criminal to pose as a genuine organisation, including banks, police officers, retailers and travel companies. Often the criminal will pretend to be a representative of the company effected or claim they are dealing with an issue resulting from the collapse of a company. The Town Council urges people to use Seaford beach responsibly whilst there is no lifeguard cover Boating, swimming and other sea-based activities are now allowed once again in England under the new Government guidelines, but, now more than ever, people need to respect the coastline. Swimming in the sea is now allowed as daily exercise in England, along with paddle boarding, surfing, windsurfing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing. Sailing and owners of private boats may also go out onto the water.

Those with private boats and yachts should carry out all the usual safety checks and make sure they have a way to contact HM Coastguard if they get into difficulty, as should everyone visiting the coast and beaches. On the advice of their governing body, Surf Lifesaving GB, Seaford Lifeguards will not be patrolling Seaford Beach. However, they will still carry out weekly inspections of Public Rescue Equipment along the seafront. Seaford Lifeguards are operated by volunteers and Seaford is incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated team on its beaches. It was not a decision taken lightly but the lifeguards must consider the safety of their team members. As with previous years, yellow buoys will be sited 200 metres out to sea from Splash Point to Edinburgh Road. The landside of these buoys denotes a safe swimming zone where only hand-powered craft are permitted. It is strongly recommended that despite the buoys being back in situ, only strong and competent swimmers, and those with the necessary equipment, enter the water in order to reduce unnecessary risks, and only in ideal swimming conditions. Please use the beach responsively, maintain social distancing and consider if your activity might put people, including yourself and frontline responders, at risk. If you get into trouble call 999 and ask for the Coastguard who will come to your aid. #StayAlert

A Thermos flask that holds 1 pint. 450-500ml of milk. Whole milk gives the creamiest results and is the one we prefer, but semi-skimmed also works well. 4-5 tbsp live yoghurt at room temperature. (If the blurb on the pot says ‘made with live cultures’ you’re good to go). Optional – 25g milk powder. Some methods said this made the yoghurt thicker and creamier. I found that it gave the yoghurt a slightly grainy texture, but it might have been my ancient milk powder! A kitchen thermometer is helpful but not necessary. Sterilise the flask by filling it with boiling water. I empty it and pop the lid on to keep it warm.

the heat and allow to cool to 46°C. Then whisk the room-temperature yoghurt through and add the milk powder if using.

No thermometer method

Heat the milk until a ring of bubbles forms around the edge of the pan. This means the milk has reached scalding point. I checked and it is between 82 and 86°C. Allow to cool for at least fifteen minutes. Then (make sure you have super-clean hands) dip your little finger into the centre of the milk up to the first knuckle. When you can comfortably hold it there for five seconds the good bacteria will be comfortable too (I checked and it’s somewhere around 46°C). Whichever method you use, pour the resulting mixture into the warmed, sterilised thermos flask. Seal and leave for 12 hours. I usually leave overnight. In the morning you should have yoghurt! Decant into clean glass jars and enjoy. You can use a few tablespoons of this yoghurt to make your next batch. It’s the food that keeps on giving. Sarah Davey

Working together at Seahaven Foodbank by Mike Ogilvie

Despite the current lockdown, Seaford Rotarians have been as busy as ever working with fellow Rotarians from Martello Rotary, Lewes District Council and the Seaford Voluntary Emergency Team (SVET) to support the Seahaven Foodbank.

What is it and how does it work?

The food bank fits into the National and voluntary structures that have been implemented to support the Seaford Community. The Lewes District Council deliveries include food banks but also deliver direct to the 1.2 million particularly vulnerable people who have had to isolate for 12 weeks. The Seaford Voluntary Emergency Team (SVET), working in partnership with District Councillors and the local churches are picking up any residents who are in need and matching them with volunteers to do shopping, collect medicines etc, especially residents who can pay for their shopping but for one reason or another canâ€™t get to the shops. A loan fund has been set up to overcome immediate cash flow problems with the purchase of shopping and the means of reimbursement. This avoids any volunteer having to pay out for goods or handling residents bank cards etc. One of the key roles of Seaford Foodbank is also to support those residents of the Seaford and Newhaven area who may have been referred by the social agencies and for a time may be dependent on support by the food bank.

Every Thursday a group of Rotarians from Seaford and Martello Rotary clubs join other volunteers at the

food bank in Vale Road at 9am and spend the first two hours sorting and stacking fresh, dried and packaged food purchased directly from Morrisons, or received from the gift food boxes from local supermarkets and churches, or received from Lewes District Council. Deliveries and donations from supermarkets and donation boxes are weighed in and stacked on tables in a sort of supermarket fashion, distanced between rows to keep safe distances for the pickers and packers. Volunteers then start picking items, packing up food parcels before weighing them again for allocation to clients. Lists are drawn up of clients and their family size, with allocations of 16Kg for a single person, 24kg for a couple and 30kg plus for a family. Within the weight of a weekly delivery there should be at least three meals consisting of tinned meat, fish, curry, pasta, tea, coffee, a squash drink, sugar and milk. Soup, beans, a dessert of some kind, fresh or tinned vegetables as available, cereal, and bread (donated weekly by Burts Bakery). At Easter we were able to include an Easter egg per child. By 1pm prepared food parcels are ready for collection. Some clients pick up food parcels, while others are sent out for delivery by a group of volunteer drivers (who include a number of our fellow Rotarians and a spouse). They deliver to clients as far away as Telscombe Cliffs, Peacehaven, Newhaven, Seaford Bishopstone and Alfriston. Deliveries are made to the door, taking account of Health and Safety requirements and social distancing. Clients include those with confirmed Covid-19 virus.

How much food is provided?

Over the month of April the amount of food and the number of deliveries has increased significantly. On 10th April 850kg of fresh, dried and packaged food was distributed to more than 38 clients. On 16th April volunteers put together 2,000kg of food parcels for

70 families (each of 3 – 5 bags). On 23rd April it was 2,500kg of food parcels and on the last day of April we actually provided food to 93 families. Deliveries and back office work are usually finished by 5pm and then we have a few days to recover before it all starts again the following week. The donated food is much appreciated and we do get a lot of thanks for the work of the foodbank teams by recipients and even the occasional text: ‘Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the food, honestly (you) don’t know what it means to us’ – a mum with two boys. If you are interested in donating needed food items they can be left in the bins of Morrisons or the two Co-ops, Scoop and Weigh or in the foyer of St Peters Church in Belgrave Road. Priority needs continue to be milk (long life), tinned goods such as soup, baked beans, meatballs, hotdogs, coffee, tea, tinned vegetables and cereals. Martello Rotary Seaford This month’s submission is slightly different from the usual. It’s about feedback on one of the activities we did with Seaford Head School just before everything closed down, an event called Living History and it’s very relevant as we have just had VE day celebrations. This feedback provides insight into how important it is for the young and the old to keep in touch and share experiences of life. Firstly, an intro from Mathew Lewis, who is Head of History at the School. For the second year running, staff and students at Seaford Head have been privileged to have had the opportunity to listen to local residents recall their youth as part of the Living History project. On this occasion some of our year 8 students were entertained and enlightened by a number of guest speakers who recounted their experiences as children during the Second World War. As teachers we try to make our subject as lively and relevant as possible at Seaford Head, and this project is a wonderful way for us to bring history to life. I know the students really enjoyed hearing the stories and it certainly led to some lively discussion afterwards. We would like to thank the Rotary clubs in Seaford for organising this event and we look forward to it continuing next year. And here is the report on the event by one of the students who was there.

Living History Day Report By Elias Webber ‘For Living History Day, my class and I went to the assembly hall to talk to some people about their experiences of the Second World War and how it affected them. We got to hear about lots things like rationing, bombings and evacuation. It was quite amazing how they learnt to deal with these conditions and how their childhoods were surrounded with warfare. ‘The first person my group talked to was Mike, who was born in Buckinghamshire in 1945. He was not

around for much of the war itself but was certainly affected by rationing. The sugar rationing was the thing that affected him the most because without sugar you cannot have sweets. He said that his first sweet was the Polo mint. Another thing which was rationed was firewood, this meant nothing to keep you warm during the night. ‘Mike grew up on a farm, so all the milk he drank was straight from the cow. There was also other livestock. Of his memories on the farm one of my favourites was one where he owned a pig while he grew up. The pig was from the farm piggery, which was run by a Ukrainian prisoner of war, who had been trusted enough to do this job. Mike had to care for his pig by himself. He had to find food and water for it. ‘The second person my group spoke to was Barbara. She was born in 1939 and grew up in London. During the war she was very scared because she thought the Germans would invade. Her father had dug an Anderson Shelter in the garden and there was a Morrison Shelter in the house, which was like a cage which would protect you if the ceiling caved in. When the bombing started to get bad and the children were being evacuated, Barbara’s mother kept Barbara with her. Later though she was sent to live with her Aunt in the country. ‘One of the bombs used during the Blitz was a Doodlebug, which was basically a bomb which flew like a plane without a pilot. After the fuel ran out it crashed down wherever it was, causing a mighty explosion.

When the war ended there were massive parties in the street which Barbara said were fun. ‘The third person my group talked to was Bob who was born in 1938. He did not remember much about the war, but he does remember being carried off to the air-raid shelter. In it everyone sang songs to try to keep spirits high. Bob also remembers that his mother made lots of sacrifices for him and his brother. She would often give up food for them, so she was very skinny. Another of his memories was when his father came home all dusty. This was because a bomb had dropped near him and he dived behind a wall. The wall was destroyed but he had protected himself from the blast. ‘Overall, I found Living History Day very interesting and I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Seaford for making this happen.’ We are always looking for volunteers to go along to the school when we hold these sessions. SAFETY AND WELLBEING DURING THIS PANDEMIC We thought you may be interested in news from lockdown at Clifden House, our leading dementia care centre in Seaford. Thanks to the diligence and hard work of our brilliant team, we have continued to operate with no cases of coronavirus within the home. While lockdown has meant no visitors, and we appreciate how difficult this time has been for friends and families of our residents, we care for residents at Clifden House as if they were in their own family home. We have worked really hard to keep residents engaged and happy with all sorts of social interaction, including virtual group activities with their families, bingo, singing and quizzes. We are also sharing photos from families with residents. We went into preparation mode early on, having carefully watched developments in Europe and nationwide. The situation, as any avid news watcher would agree, has been changing and developing daily, and we continue to act in the best possible way for our residents and team members. Whilst we wait for the authorities to catch up with announcements on support and supply for care homes, we have been able to source PPE independently, and to adhere to the guidance from Public Health England on best practice in care homes. One great lesson is that the single greatest protection at this time is good, regular and efficient hand hygiene. Everything else depends on this, whether that is putting on a mask or delivering care. Our team at Clifden House, as with most care homes, have experience in infection control and dealing with similar viruses such as flu and the norovirus. We are well versed in controlling viral infections and have procedures in place to protect other residents. We have put in place a number of measures to protect residents, staff and their families. These include: l increased cleaning schedules across the home l refreshed infection control training with all staff

increased signage to remind staff to follow good handwashing techniques and the importance of hand hygiene, and use of alcohol-based gel on arrival and departure from the home l switching to sachets instead of communal bottles in dining areas. l

Along with precautionary measures taken, the benefit of social interaction remains in Clifden House and residents can still take part in the wide range of activities available to them. These activities can greatly boost residentsâ€™ overall well being, particularly when restrictions on visiting have been implemented. We have reviewed visiting policies to reduce the risk of infection from visitors and adhere to social distancing recommendations to protect the health and safety of residents, while also allowing visits in exceptional circumstances, and after health and temperature checks. The Power of the Micro-Lift The importance of those little hits of happiness At the time of writing most of us are still in quarantine. This makes us unwilling participants in a huge psychological experiment, unprecedented in history. Quarantine itself is not the problem for most of us. With online shopping, online seminars, online meetings, there are myriad ways we remain connected to the outside world via technology. But the recent rise in mental health issues suggests that something about self-isolation is a huge problem. Psychologists studying the effects of lockdown on our mental health have discovered is that being in isolation means we miss regular doses of ‘micro-lifts’. Micro-lifts are those pleasurable little incidents scattered throughout our day, which we usually consider so insignificant we barely remember them. It’s someone smiling a cheery hello as you buy a morning paper, or the little accidental dance you end up doing with a colleague as you both tried to get through door at the same time and which made you giggle. These seemingly banal events lift our mood without us even realising. If you’re in isolation on your own these little micro-lifts don’t happen naturally. We begin to go into micro-lift deficit after about two weeks and this can cause our mood to nosedive. Even if you are isolated with your family it seems that micro-lifts are in much shorter supply, as they seem to be more dependent on those little interactions and connections we make with a wider circle of people going about our daily business. This means that while we’re in quarantine we can improve our sense of well-being by generating our own artificial micro-lifts. To do this we need to create opportunities for small, real connections with others throughout our day. It might be smiling and waving at the postman each morning or exchanging a few words from a safe social distance with a neighbour. I mentioned micro-lifts to my 17-year-old son after he’d looked a bit down and complained that, ‘…every day is the same right now. I have nothing to talk about with my mates anymore.’ After thinking about it for a while

he came up with the idea of doing an online painting tutorial with a couple of friends. They all completed the same tutorial while chatting to each other on video call. It wasn’t about the end result; it was about the process of creating a time and space to connect with each other over a shared experience. They laughed a lot and teased each other and sounded like normal carefree teens for a short while. He felt much better afterwards, and it boosted his mood for a couple of days. They are planning to do something similar at regular intervals, which also gives them things to look forward to in the short term. Remember micro-lifts are not about the big stuff…this isn’t about setting out to lose twenty pounds, or learn Italian, or the cello, though these things might present opportunities for micro-lifts if you’re doing them with other people. They are about working brief, meaningful connections with others into your day, and the beauty of micro-lifts, is that every time you connect and generate one for yourself, you are doing the same for someone else. If in lockdown you’ve been rewatching the entire wonderful BBC series Call the Midwife, you might want to take the time to read the books on which it’s based. Jennifer Worth’s bestselling memoirs recall stories of life, birth and death in London’s East End during the 1950s. It opens as Jennifer – then fresh-faced young Jenny Lee – arrives at Nonnatus House, a community of nuns who provide midwifery and district nursing for the close-knit families of the dockers of Poplar, and follows her as she lives and learns amongst them.Jenny is an honest and sympathetic narrator, quick to point out her own failings. The nuns, from calm, steady Sister Julienne to mischievous Sister Monica Joan are characterised beautifully, and Jenny’s fellow midwives are a memorable bunch. But it is the people of the East End who burst from the pages – from terrified runaways to hardy mothers of four (and even twenty four!), from seedy pimps to rough and ready dockers, all are described so vividly that they practically step out to meet you. The backdrop is almost a character in itself. As the book progresses, the reader begins to understand something

Every birth is different, and the book contains comic, tragic and poignant experiences. Worth balances human interest and medical detail deftly, never talking down to the reader but never baffling them with complex terminology, as she guides us through the emotions as well as the technicalities. For anyone with an interest in birth, midwifery, social history or just a good story, this is a must read.

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins

We’ve watched all the Hunger Games films again while in lockdown. They are a great lead-in to the books which if possible, paint an even more vivid picture. Collins’ dystopian vision of Panem is even more sinister on the page. This land, which was once America, is now divided into twelve districts, controlled by the Capitol and subjugated both by hunger and by the yearly tradition of ‘reaping’ one boy and one girl from each area to fight to the death in a televised theatre of cruelty. In order to save her sister from this fate, Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her place. Instantly her life changes as she is taken first to the Capitol for a series of rituals, and then thrust into the Games themselves. To complicate matters further, she must decide whether her fellow ‘tribute’ from District 12, Peeta, can be trusted or whether he must be sacrificed in order for Katniss to save herself. This was the novel that turned my reluctant teenage reader into one who stayed up well into the small hours to finish it. And like all the best fantasy writing, it allows us to reflect on our own world, and how we treat others. No bad thing right now. Katherine Gillespie

Looking Forward to Life After Lockdown We hope this month’s article, written in mid May, finds you safe and well during these strange times. There are at last some green shoots of positive news about coronavirus coming from other parts of the world. Lockdown is being eased in many parts of Europe. We’re now back in the office, but carefully following the government guidelines. We’re installing screens and also introducing clean kits to take on valuations and viewings. These will include hand sanitizer, disposable gloves and face masks. The two months that we’ve been in lockdown has given us the opportunity to take stock. Until a vaccine is found we think that a lot of people will not want to venture out unnessasarily.
