Trees for Seaford

Welcome to the January 2021 issue of Seaford Scene. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas, in the best possible way that you could under the circumstances, and I trust you are keeping safe and well. And so, after an extraordinarily challenging 2020, it’s time to look forward to a brighter, happier and healthier new year ahead! I’m so pleased to bring you the first issue of 2021, including articles from all your favourite local clubs and organisations. We have news from Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team, who have been a tremendous support to the Seaford community throughout the pandemic, see page 72, and Seahaven Storehouse, who also continue to help and supply food to Seaford residents in need, see page 52. Find out how the exciting, new Tide Mills Project is progressing on page 56, and we have an update from Seaford Museum, which is now...open! (page 16). Trees for Seaford and Greenhavens Network are both out and about planting trees in the community – if you fancy helping and volunteering with either organisation, turn to page 4 and 84 for more details. Find out who is in the new Senior Student Team at Seaford Head Sixth Form on page 71. Do you know someone in Seaford whose service to the town should receive recognition? Turn to page 60 for the Mayor’s Awards and Certificates, and more information. All this and so much more in your January 2021 issue. Thank you to everyone who continues to support and enjoy Seaford Scene magazine. Wishing you all the very best for a Happy New Year!

Trees for Seaford Trees for Seaford celebrated the end of Lockdown and National Tree Week at the beginning of December. Disease-resistant Elm trees were planted in Chyngton Way by both experienced and new members of the group. Like many groups, Trees for Seaford had to work differently last year. Although most activities were outside, it isn’t always easy keeping two metres apart when caring for trees on the narrow verges. Some of these maintenance sessions had to be cancelled as the whole country was in Lockdown, but others went ahead under new rules. The group had to perform strange little dances to avoid getting in other people’s space. There was no sharing of tools either and masks had to be worn when we had coffee together afterwards.

Are you creative? Do you like writing? Do you love our green spaces? Would you like to give something back to your community? Greenhavens Network connects communities and green spaces, with 3,000 members we continue to grow and are looking for people who would be keen to rekindle our monthly newsletter. The environment, climate change and biodiversity are all topics we care passionately about, and if you do too we would love to hear from you.

Last year was full of uncertainties and so it was particularly uplifting to be planting trees that will be standing for decades to come. We look forward to planting many more in the new year ahead, and of course our maintenance sessions will also continue – a vital part of improving the town for people and wildlife.

We are a volunteer community-led group, and passionately believe we can make magic happened in our communities. If this excites you, check out our website and Facebook group, and email us on greenhavens@yahoo.com #greenhavensnetwork

If you would like to join us, you don’t need to have experience of trees – just enthusiasm. There are many roles and we welcome everybody. Visit our website to find out more (see below).

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB Happy New Year to everyone, we hope you enjoyed the festive period. We are looking forward to the coming year and helping the local community through the various projects we organise and are involved with. As well as the Members, we also have other people who give up their time to help us out. In order to recognise this we presented Certificates of Appreciation to Bill Marshall who is a Friend of Lions. Amongst the support Bill gives he organises the collection of spectacles from the various opticians in our area and they are then sent off to be recycled. He also comes along to the monthly beach clean sessions in Seaford, as well as helping us out with the Half Marathons, Donkey Derbys and Santa Sleigh runs. We also presented a Certificate to Val and Brian Percival who have done a great job driving the NP&S minibus to deliver food parcels throughout the community, in partnership with the local foodbanks. In the last five months they have helped to deliver 3,776 food parcels,1,861 frozen meals and the same for fresh/ bakery bags and 82 emergency parcels. We are very grateful to all those individuals who support us throughout the year.

SEAFORD MUSIC SOCIETY Seaford Music Society invites you to a concert at 3pm on Sunday 24th January 2021 at Seaford Baptist Church lasting for about one hour. The concert will be repeated at 6pm subject to demand. COVID measures will be in place during the concert with social distancing, the required face coverings, minimal socialising and a limited audience of 50 people. The Society looks forward to welcoming two award winning and gifted musicians, Maggie Cole and Sebastian Comberti, to play a programme of music by Beethoven and Schumann. A piece by David Popper, a Bohemian cellist and composer born in 1843, is also included.

Happy New Year to all We provide the Seaford Town 120 circular route covers Morrisons, Marine Parade (Edinburgh Road), Hawth Hill/Crescent, Hurdis Road, Clementine Avenue, Beacon Road, Station Approach, Morrisons. The 30 minute circular normally runs 5½ days per week, but frequency and seating may be restricted owing to covid-related issues. Hopefully things will improve shortly. We also run service 26 on Sundays linking Seaford to Eastbourne via Alfriston.

Maggie is a distinguished keyboard player on harpsichord, fortepiano and the modern piano. Born in America, she now resides in England and is best known for her many recitals on BBC Radio3, playing at music festivals along with performing in venues all around the world. Maggie also has numerous recordings of her work performed with other well-known musicians, and also finds time to teach and bring music into facilities for youth offenders.

Concessionary fares are accepted on all our services after 9.30am and anytime at weekends.

Sebastian is a renowned cellist. He studied firstly in Italy and then at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1983 he became principal cellist with the London Mozart Players and has frequently appeared as its soloist. He developed a keen interest in playing with many of London’s period instrument groups, and has done research into early cello repertoire which resulted in several recitals being recorded by the BBC. In 2001 Sebastian founded Cello Classics, a label devoted to recordings of rare repertoire and gifted artists.

Seaford Photographic Society

Congratulations to Colin Mitchell and Kevin Smoker who have been successful in gaining ‘Licentiate’ (LRPS) distinctions from the Royal Photographic Society.

It was a good week for Kevin as he also won both the Street and Tabletop competitions! These were judged by Lorraine Robins from St Austell Camera Club, in Cornwall. Second place in the Tabletop competition went to Jennie Edwards, and Janice Hewitt took third place with another of her very imaginative images. In the Street Photography competition Charlie Verrall took second place and Peter Cavanagh third. It was good to see so many people sticking around for a while at the end of the Zoom meeting, and it turned into quite a good social get-together, or as well as can be expected without meeting face to face! We were pleased to welcome Steven Galvin LRPS back to the club, this time to present his talk: Judge, Jury and Executioner! This was a fascinating insight into the world of club competitions, with many tips and examples of how to take, process and present competitive images. To put it another way, it was really all about how to take better photos and avoid some of the more common mistakes that people make! At our request, he also did a short version of his talk on Triptychs, as we have a competition on that subject coming up in March. The final round of the PDI League was judged by Malcolm Bull from Steyning Camera Club, and we had

12

a record 74 entries. In the Standard Group, AnnaMarie Armstrong’s ‘Getting Ready’ monochrome image scored the maximum 20/20, as did Simon Rigby’s nature photo ‘Hanging about in the Wheat’. Steve Hewitt’s minimalist and very artistic ‘4 O’clock Tern’ scored a 20 in the Advanced Group. Very different, but equally successful was Jack Taylor’s monochrome scene, taken in Paris, called ‘Peace in the Park’. So the final league positions were Colin Mitchell in first place in the Advanced Group and Anna-Marie Armstrong in the Standard Group. Well done to them both. Hopefully we will be having a proper AGM and prize giving meeting in May, when they will be presented with their trophies. The final meeting of the month was a superb talk by Justin Garner, speaking to us all the way from Manchester, on macro and close-up photography. Justin was the winner of 2017’s Outdoor Photographer of the Year, Small World category. This really was a fascinating evening, with lots of examples of his work plus many technical hints and tips. One of the techniques he covered was focus stacking, where you take several photos of the same subject, focusing on a different part each time. You then use some specialist software which combines the sharp bits from each photo and merges them into one, which is pin-sharp from front to back. You can see large versions of all the competition-winning photos on our website www.seafordps.org, and if you’d like to know more about the club, just get in touch using the ‘contact’ button. Photos from top: Getting Ready, by Anna-Marie Armstrong; Hanging About in the Wheat, by Simon Rigby; These Boots are Made For, by Kevin Smoker; High-Key Still Life – Something Blue, by Kevin Smoker; 4 O’Clock Tern, by Steve Hewitt; Peace in the Park, by Jack Taylor.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

The Museum is open – fly the flag! At Seaford Museum, we look forward to being open each Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm in the winter months of 2021. So as you take a bracing walk along the Seaford Esplanade this month, look out for the flag flying from the Martello Tower flag pole and come in for a visit. If you have never been in, you will be surprised at the amount and complexity of exhibits in this Tardis-like museum. The blue Museum flag is flown when the Museum is open, but it has to give way for official flag days. On days to be officially marked, such as the Queen’s official birthday or Commonwealth day, you will see the Union Flag flying. But you will also see St George’s Cross flying on 23rd April for St George’s Day and the Red Ensign on 3rd September for Merchant Navy Day, as well as other flags to mark various days.

A Mother’s Union lecture A Mother’s Union lecture via Zoom – well, that makes a difference. It will be on Tuesday 19th January at 2pm, presented by St Peter’s Church in Seaford, and it is on the theme of Angels. There will be two speakers: the Rector, the Rev Arwen Folkes, who will draw from scripture, and the art historian Kay Blackburn, who will talk on the theme from an art viewpoint. Intrigued? Then please contact: rectoryebb@ gmail.com to register your interest. All are most welcome. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. On the eastern side of the Martello Tower, by the old entrance, there’s a small notice of explanation to tell you the reason for flying a flag on that day. The Museum is very lucky to be able to rely on the services of Michael Staples to raise and lower the commemorative flags as required on the 28 days each year. Mike follows the ‘official list’ but has also added additional dates – and one in particular – 12th July. ‘Athelstan was one of our greatest Anglo-Saxon kings. He was born in 894 became King of Mercia in 924 and of Wessex the following year. In 927, he conquered the last remaining Viking kingdom – York. And in Eamont near Penrith in Cumbria on 12th July 927, the various Kings and rulers of Wales and Scotland accepted Athelstan’s overlordship, making him the first Anglo-Saxon ruler of the whole of England. So 12th July is England’s Birthday and it’s a date worth celebrating! For several years the Museum has also proudly flown the Sussex Flag, which has six gold Martlets (mythical birds, a bit like a swallow but without feet) on a field of blue, on Sussex Day,16th June. This is St Richard’s Day – St Richard of Chichester being the patron saint of Sussex. The flag seems to have been associated with Sussex since at least 1611 when it first appeared on a map by John Speed. There is however, one flag that we hope never to see flying over the Martello Tower ever again. The Yellow Jack indicating the presence of contagious disease was flown while the Museum was closed on too many days in 2020. Let’s hope it can be packed away forever. Photo caption: Michael Staples raising the new flag above the Martello Tower.

Martello Rotary Seaford

Oh, Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, what shall I do with thee…

By the time you read this Christmas will have passed, the tinsel will be sagging and you will be looking at the Christmas tree, once resplendent, but now slightly droopy and dusty, and wondering how you can get rid of it without making the usual awful mess!. Never fear, Martello Rotary is here. We will come and pick up your old tree from the bottom of your drive on either the 9th or 10th January for a small payment of £5 (plus a bit more if you want to give more to charity). Just follow the QR at the end of the paragraph for link to eBay (or search Martello Rotary on eBay). We will take your old tree away and dispose of it environmentally. All proceeds go to Seaford and local area charities. This year we are supporting the Youth Counselling Scheme, Newhaven RNLI, WOLO and many other local charities and projects

Grant application re-launch As you will see in our sister club’s article (page 44, we are working with them to re-launch the Grant Application scheme. We want to support individuals and organisations in our community in a way which will engender community spirit, assist those in need, or improve the natural environment. Grants are potentially available for individuals and community benefit organisations within Seaford, including Bishopstone. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, we will only be able to receive requests by electronic means. Notice: This issue of Seaford Scene has been distributed by an independent delivery company. Please note that Seaford Scene is not responsible for any other publicity material that is delivered at the same time as the magazine. If you have any issues regarding the delivery of Seaford Scene, please contact MA Distribution www.madistribution.co.uk

For more information and an application form, visit www.seafordrotary.org.uk, and follow the links to Grant Applications.

Yet another virtual run completed successfully…Seaford 10K…so then on to the ‘Mince Pie’ run For all those keen runners, especially the Seaford Striders who have continued to support all of our virtual runs, a BIG, BIG, THANK YOU, 33 runners participated in our 10K virtual race and proceeds will be going to Newhaven Life Boats. We are now (at the time of writing) in the process working with Seaford Striders to set up and book for the ‘Mince Pie Run’. By the time you read this we will, we hope, have had an even bigger turn out. Proceeds from this will be split between Seaford WOLO and our general local charities. Long live the virtual run. Anyone interested in a virtual bike ride?

Keeping Seaford green Despite Covid restrictions, Martello Rotary continues to provide support to the environment group Trees for Seaford that has over a number of years carried out tree planting along grass verges and in open green spaces in the town. A new programme has been agreed and, whilst being weather dependant started again on 28th November, which was the start of National Trees Week. As part of our ongoing plan, Martello Rotary will assist with the planting of a number of trees and the maintenance of others previously planted by the group. Contact Martello Rotary for further information on contact@martellorotary.org.uk or use our QR code to visit our website. Seaford Business Inspires National Hospice Campaign

Local couple Jerry Lyons and Wendy Reed run the business and explained what inspired them to do it. Jerry said: ‘Covid-19 has meant 2020 has been a brutal year for hospices who often rely solely on fundraising. With all events pretty much wiped out since March, they have been under extreme pressure to keep providing the magical and much-needed care and support they provide people who are in the winters of their lives.’

A business in Seaford has teamed up with 16 independent estate agents in England, Wales, and Scotland, to donate £3,200 to hospices.

Jerry continued: ‘I know from personal experience how much their work matters because my mum saw out her days in a wonderful hospice. I’m proud of our clients for stepping up, putting their hands in their pockets and making it possible for us to match fund their donations and donate to the local hospice in their area.’

The Estate Agent Content Club (EACC) which provides written articles and graphics to non-competing independent agencies, launched the Helping Our Local Hospices campaign in the last week of November. It’s charitable arm, the Karma Club, offered to match fund any of its members who wanted to donate £100 to their local hospice.

One such member was John Paul from the Castledene Group in the north-east. He said: “We’re proud to have played our small part in the Helping Our Local Hospices campaign, it’s an inspiring idea and shows typical generosity from Jerry, Wendy and their Karma Club.’ Photo: Jerry Lyons of the Estate Agent Content Club.

Start the New Year as you mean to go on… 23rd March 2020. A date that will go down in history. The date Boris Johnson announced England would have to stay home! The date upon which many families realised they could not continue to live with one another. 2020 has been a stressful and lonely time for many, not least if you’ve experienced a separation. The coronavirus pandemic played a huge part in disrupting the contact arrangements for the children of many parents. Whilst some parents are using coronavirus to withhold legitimate contact, other parents have used it as an excuse not to share childcare at all, neither of which are fair. They add to the pressures of Lockdown, and the worst part is when children are caught in the middle. 2021 is a year that will continue to look very different for many families. If you find yourself not being able to agree on arrangements for your children, Mayo Wynne Baxter Solicitors can assist. It is important to act promptly so matters can be resolved. We can assist you to seek to resolve matters outside of court, but we can also guide you through the dispute resolution process (such as mediation or working collaboratively). As a parent, you can ask for the following (private law orders): l Parental responsibility order – this can give a father, other parental figure/carer legal rights and responsibility for a child. (Biological mothers automatically have parental responsibility).

Specific issue order – where a decision needs to be made about a particular point of dispute about a child’s upbringing, such as where a child should be schooled. l

Prohibited steps order – this stops a person doing something to or with a child, for example saying a parent must not remove a child from his or her school or take abroad. l

If you already have an order in place, we can also assist you with enforcement. In addition, we can also guide you through the divorce process and the financial implications of a separation. We hope that you will not have to, but if you do need us, we will do everything possible to ensure the whole process is completed with the least possible stress to you. We do not under-estimate the difficult times our clients face when going through the legal process. We will guide you at every step of the way and provide you with advice tailored to your individual circumstances. If you would wish to speak with one of our Family Law Specialists, please contact our friendly team on 0800 84 94 101. Tia Harrison Family Partner

Child arrangements order- which can set out where a child will live and when a child will see a particular person, usually a parent. l

Goodbye 2020 – Hello 2021 It’s a great time to do a quick review of last year and look forward to what this next 12 months may bring. Remembering 2020 When we remember 2020, the way the community of Seaford came together will be at the front of our thoughts, significantly how people responded in the first lockdown. It was truly inspiring and shows what spirit there is in our town and how many generous, kind, and good-hearted people live here. From a local property market perspective, 2020 was the strangest year we’ve experienced in the thirty-three years we’ve been serving Seaford. We entered 2020 off the back of a General Election that gave clarity around what would happen with Brexit. The ‘Boris Bounce’ as it was dubbed made the housing market a lot busier than it usually is in the winter. And it was motoring along very strongly until something totally out of the blue derailed it and everything in its path. The Covid-19-induced lockdown in late March meant the market was placed on hold like never before. Recessions slow down house sales, but this stopped it totally, pretty much overnight following the lockdown announcement. Then when the first lockdown ended, the market started up again with historic levels of activity. That continues, perhaps not as crazily as it did in the summer, but lots of people are still looking to move home. And lots of people are looking to move to Seaford.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

2021 – An Optimistic Outlook We’re confident there will be a real feel-good effect next year when life returns to some form of preCOVID-19 normality. And we think this will positively impact the property market. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for the vaccines, maintain our social distance, and stay as safe as possible until we can get back to the way things were. If you’ve got any questions about the property market, please contact us.

Stephen and Andrew PS: We’d like to wish all our clients, colleagues, and the community in Seaford a Happy New Year. 2021 already looks like being better than its predecessor thanks to vaccines offering us all hope.

The Rhythm of Prayer has a Powerful Beat… The year that has just departed has been a challenge for everyone. But one church has adapted to all kinds of restrictions, including having to shut for a time, and discovered a new way of working. Now St Peter’s, in Belgrave Road, Seaford, is greeting the year 2021 with a gentle challenge which everyone in Seaford (and beyond) can share. For months the church, faced with the problem that for weeks the public could not be admitted, has used Facebook and YouTube to share services, and that inspired move has brought an unexpected bonus. People all over the town and far beyond, across the county and indeed the country, have joined in to share them. Now it wants to extend its reach for everyone with something else.

The Rector, the Rev Arwen Folkes, explains: ‘We stop as a church community at 9.30am and 7pm each day Monday to Saturday to share in the prayers that are set for that day. We pray for our church and the world, but we also pray for specific streets, people who are sick, and our local communities. ‘It has been so rich and good that we have decided to continue on and would like to extend the invitation outwards. ‘Scientific studies have shown that the sort of rhythm this brings can be highly beneficial and we’re inviting everyone to share it, with the use of printed booklets and Facebook Live.’ How? It’s easy. To take part, all you have to do is turn up at the times on www.facebook.com/stpeterseb/live. Or you can email rectoryebb@gmail.com for a booklet that can help. She adds that such innovation means St Peter’s has the opportunity to reach out and connect with people, whether they are online or not. Not a bad resolution for the New Year, perhaps.

seaford afternoon flower club At the time of writing (beginning of December) we are anticipating a rather different festive season to those we have experienced in the past. Now that all that is over, we can begin to concentrate on thinking positively about this new year and hoping that 2021 will be very different to 2020. The competition theme for November was A Touch of Sparkle, and as you can see from the photographs, that is exactly what our members delivered. The enthusiasm for creating something frivolous and glittery was perhaps a reaction to the doom and gloom we kept hearing in the

36

news. Similarly, rarely have we seen so many houses decorated outside as we saw in December. We must take comfort from the fact that every day now we have a few more hours of daylight and it surely won’t be too long before we begin to see the appearance of snowdrops, daffodils and other spring plants that lift our spirits. Generally, our club does not meet in January, but this year we have continued with our newsletter and competition in the anticipation of meeting up later in the year.

Seaford’s changing sea level

Back in last November’s issue, we were left suspended over fifty foot (more than 15 metres) up Short Cliff (photo left) wondering how a river got uphill. But first a bit of history…

Seaford grew up where the land and sea meet – once evidently joined by a river, giving us the ford. Currently the oldest land, the White Chalk as in the Seaford Cliffs, started on the sea floor of a hothouse earth during the age of the dinosaurs. The sea retreated during the following age of mammals as the climate steadily cooled, leaving a few patches of tertiary sand, as on the Seaford Head Golf Course. The younger sediment can be seen streaming over the chalk from Splash Point (photo below). Much later, the Channel started filling up with sea water as it emerged from a cold icehouse, nearly 12,000 years ago. The sea reached us by Celtic times with a buried beach below the bus stop at Bishopstone (photo left). Sea cliffs appeared from Rookery Hill to the Seven Sisters. The drowned mouths of our local rivers then started to choke with sand and pebbles: mud piled up behind creating saltmarsh, and eventually new land, from Tide Mills to the Steyne, and behind Cuckmere Haven. A cut created Newhaven harbour, a protective breakwater blocking the supply of pebbles into Seaford Bay, resulting in dredged shingle being artificially added to our beach, redistributed every year. The new pebble land can be seen from Castle Hill (photo top).

38

When Seaford had an arctic climate, with ground frost shattering and

rearranging the chalk at Cuckmere Haven (photo left) size eleven welly for scale), global sea levels dropped because so much water went to create glaciers and polar ice, depressing the land surface. The landscape was rather bare and prone to erosion, the rivers and streams first down cutting the chalk, then burying it under sediment, as at Short Cliff. A few fossils of woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius photo right) and wild horse (Equus ferus) were also buried there. Interestingly, the old bed of the River Thames can also be found in London at 50 to 60 feet (15-18 metres) up. Hippo remains (Hippopotamus amphibius image left) have been found in it, dating from the last warm episode, about 125,000 years ago. Our climate then must have been somewhat warmer than today. Finally, as the ice melted and sea levels rose, the eroded land surface bounced back, but not to its previous level, leaving the old river beds perched as terraces on valley sides – now exposed by coastal erosion at Short Cliff. This does not explain, however, how the chalk seabed rose up in the Seaford Cliffs, especially as there were no polar ice sheets during the age of the dinosaurs. That too is another story. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Seaford Rotary

Seaford Sleigh

Seaford Rotary reluctantly took the decision in late November to not invite Santa to visit the streets of Seaford this December so that the community of Seaford could remain COVID-safe. This decision, a consequence of the Government restrictions imposed after 2nd December, was taken after much consideration, and thought. For over 60 years Seaford Rotary has been accompanying Santa on his sleigh around the streets of Seaford on December evenings. This was the first time that Seaford Rotary has not been able to let the children of Seaford see Santa in the weeks before Christmas. We hope that we can invite Santa in 2021. Nevertheless many people have been generous in supporting us by making a Christmas donation to Seaford Rotary by visiting the Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving. com/campaign/seafordsleigh. We are very grateful for all your contributions, no matter how small.

Grant Applications

Seaford Rotary, in partnership with Martello Seaford Rotary, has re-launched the joint Grant Application scheme. The purpose of the scheme is to support individuals and organisations in our community in a way which will raise aspirations, engender community spirit, assist those in need, or improve the natural environment. Grants are potentially available for individuals and community benefit organisations within Seaford, including Bishopstone and Alfriston. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, applications for grants can only be received by electronic means. For more information and application form, visit www.seafordrotary.org.uk and follow the links to ‘Grant Applications’.

Helping the Seahaven Storehouse Foodbank

During the Covid pandemic Seaford Rotary has been supporting Seahaven Storehouse foodbank in several ways. Rotarians have collected food from suppliers and assembled packages ready for distribution, whilst others have delivered the food to families in Peacehaven, Newhaven and Alfriston, as well as Seaford. In the last year, the estimated weight of food delivered to an average number of 62 families was 77,500 kgs. The total number of deliveries made by 9 drivers over

44

468-working days was 3,100, all supported by three Rotarians inside the Storehouse working the equivalent of 50 days. Other members and their friends have been involved in producing recyclable cloth bags (300 so far but we are aiming for 600) to replace the vast number of plastic bags being used. There is an appeal for old curtains and strong material to make up further bags as the pandemic restrictions have stopped the usual charity shop supplies used to make the bags. The Club has also responded to requests from the Storehouse for crates and trolleys to help get deliveries to the drivers and onwards to those in need by donating 3 trolleys and thirty bale arm crates, as well as providing a ramp and a donation box (currently in Morrisons), whilst some members have provided new toys for family Christmas boxes. As the Seahaven Storehouse must buy most of the food that they send out, their funds have become seriously depleted due to the increased demand caused by the pandemic, particularly as the festive season approached. Just before December, Seaford Rotary responded by handing over a cheque for £1,000 to help keep needy families supported during this difficult time.

Walking Back to Happiness: Over the Rainbow

Please put the Over the Rainbow Walk on Sunday 21st March from 2pm in your diary. Our Over the Rainbow walk will take place along Seaford seafront between Splash Point and the Sailing Club, about 5km/3 miles there and back – a nice Sunday afternoon stroll! We are aiming for an inclusive community event with a rainbow of colourful fancy dress costumes Photo (l-r): Clive Livingstone, President Martin McGill, and Dawn Woodgate from Seahaven Storehouse receiving a cheque for £1,000 from Seaford Rotary.

inspired by films, famous people, music or your own imagination; or perhaps something which represents your local clubs and groups, and raises your group’s profile. It should be a fun afternoon for families, groups and individuals to enjoy. The entry contribution fee of £10 per adult, or £25 for a family of six or fewer, will go to the Mayor’s Charities Initiative. Walkers can choose their own charity or group to benefit from the sponsorship they raise from their families, friends, and neighbours. So, your efforts will also support good causes. What could be better! We are planning to have free parking for registered walkers in the Martello Fields before the event where you can check in at our nearby information point and receive an entry number. And if it rains cats and dogs, we will merely announce a revised date for the walk. Further details and an entry/registration form may be obtained from Jean Cash on 07484 323038 or email: jeannecash@gmail.com. Rotary Club of Seaford welcomes new members. the Storehouse have had to be put on hold, leaving just the food delivery system operating at present.

Seahaven Storehouse

A HEARTFELT MESSAGE OF THANKS TO THE PEOPLE OF SEAHAVEN

Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to all of you kind people and organisations in Seaford and the surrounding area who have given – or are regularly giving – food and finance so that we may support the many households struggling with food poverty at this time.

Before Coronavirus, Storehouse we were providing food parcels for around Seahaven is your twenty to thirty households per week; this has now risen at its height to over one hundred. We have needed a great deal of local Seaford foodbank – but food to sustain this support... but, thanks to you, with the need has come the supply and no-one has gone without. not just a foodbank, a lifeline The need has not diminished, so we remain grateful for everything given us, groceries or money, to need help us to keep for those inbe itdesperate going on behalf of those families or individuals in need.

Before Seahaven operated It has the beenCovid impossiblecrisis to thank every oneStorehouse of you personally but we hope, once distancing is less of an issue, to be able to as express a centre for support for the less fortunate members our gratitude to you in a more tangible way. of our local community, most of which found themselves With lovebeyond and thanks from Dawn Woodgate in circumstances their control and without a and the Seahaven Storehouse Team clear path to break out of their predicament. Very often their situation is invisible to the community. For more information, please contact Dawn on 07921 844930 or e-mail: seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com

The Storehouse logo represents Toucans, or ‘TwoPart of Seaford Community Church: Charitable Trust No: 293090 cans can make all the difference’. Don’t settle for your premium brand tin when you can get two tins for the same price, the second tin can be donated within your budget. Families, couples and single people in need across the Seahaven area used to attend Seaford Community Church on a weekly basis where they would receive a warm welcome, an opportunity to voice any concerns that they may have, receive a hot cooked meal, and a supply of food to carry them over for the week. The Storehouse offered counselling, advice, support and direction as to how and where to get help with addressing any worries or concerns. Each week arrivals would be engaged in conversation that over time built up a level of trust and openness, enabling the Storehouse team to get to the heart of situations and, where possible, to resolve presenting problem situations. Covid precautions have meant that the Storehouse had to close the Church building in February to all but the volunteers who prepare the weekly food bags. As the clients were no longer able to collect the bags a team of volunteer drivers has taken to delivering the bags to home addresses across the Seahaven area. Sadly, the opportunities to access the help and support from

Where does the food come from?

Each week shops and stores around the town have regular collecting boxes where the community can place food donations. Other donations come in from local churches and the community at large. Whilst some donations are dropped off at the Storehouse, drivers have a regular collection round. However, food donations represent only 20% of weekly food stocks required, the Storehouse bulk buys food from a local supermarket to make up the remaining 80% to meet the amount of food sufficient for weekly deliveries. This is supplemented by regular donations from Fare Share, distributing the surplus food from the major supermarkets. The source, amount and type of food varies each week so cannot be relied upon to meet Storehouse needs. In an average week the Storehouse will distribute 1,500kg of food to roughly 85 homes. Normally family situations would be reviewed every six weeks, but these are not normal times and we expect demand to rise.

How is the Storehouse financed?

The Storehouse is reliant on the generosity of the community, cash donations are regularly received and all of it is directed towards food purchase. Whilst under the umbrella of the Church Charity the finances are kept strictly separate. Weekly the Storehouse volunteers go out to supermarkets and bulk buy food at an average weekly cost of £1,000. Being solely dependent on donations there are weeks when there are insufficient funds to stock up, but no one goes without. Food donations have reduced over the Covid period, probably reflecting the reluctance of some community members to go out as frequently as they did, some now preferring to give the cash alternative instead.

What’s in a food parcel?

Food parcels are scaled according to the size and age range of families. A weekly family delivery can weigh in around 30kg and mainly consists of dried and tinned foods, as well as long life milk, fresh vegetables and bread as available, pasta, rice and cereals. Tins consist of pies,

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

meat, vegetables, soups, potatoes and fish. A family of four consuming two meals per day would amount to 56 meals over seven days. The Storehouse aims to provide at least three days’ meals. Not everyone has the knowledge or the skills to cook, while some have not the means to cook and are without ovens or microwaves, others have basic sanitary and toiletry needs, dietary issues or pet animals, so the Storehouse does what it can to adjust deliveries to meet individual requirements.

The foodbank operates all year round supported by dedicated volunteers who give their time and service to help the community of Seaford and Seahaven area. Cash donations can be made to: Seaford Community Church account: 57915415, sort code: 60-18-37, giving ‘Storehouse’ as a reference. Email: Seahavenstorehouse@gmail.com for more information You can also place food donations in the boxes at prominent stores around the town.

None of us know when we might find ourselves in similar circumstances, and there are many challenges to overcome, feelings of guilt and embarrassment that can be detrimental to self esteem and the ability to seek help.

Excitement building for Tide Mills Project Plans for the Tide Mills Project and the celebratory week, which will run from 20th – 26th September 2021, are coming together. LYT Productions, directed by Phil Rose, is collaborating with highly regarded professional artists, designers, sculptors, poets, musicians and writers, as well as many members of the local community, on this exciting creative heritage scheme. During the week-long celebration in September, Tide Mills will be brought back to life through imaginative installations, digital arts, animations, constructions, soundscapes, performances, workshops for all ages and guided tours. The celebratory week will be free and accessible to all – there are many opportunities for schools, colleges, young people, families and retirees in the community to get involved, learn from the professionals and share their talents. Most schools in Newhaven and Seaford have already signed up to take part in the scheme, which will see creative professionals visiting and facilitating projects with the pupils in 2021. Fun educational workshops are also planned to take place during the celebratory week. The project is being led by LYT Productions, a not-forprofit community organisation, which offers high quality

Phil Rose, who founded LYT Productions 12 years ago, has over 30 years’ experience in the entertainment industry, and creates inclusive environments where young people can safely learn practical, transferable skills with the support and mentoring of industry professionals. This is his most ambitious project to date. The LYT Productions team is calling for members of the public who have any special memories or connections to Tide Mills to get in contact via their website. Many local residents have already been in touch with the team with fascinating historical stories, which will all be reflected in the celebratory week. The Tide Mills Project, devised and delivered by LYT Productions, is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England and the South Downs National Park. Who’s Who in Seaford?

Les Fothergill, Chairman of Seaford u3a

Les has lived in Seaford for three years and has been chairman of Seaford u3a for two months, having been involved with u3a for about two years. Les was educated at Chatham Technical High School and the Universities of Surrey and Southampton. Before retiring he worked for the Government in the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Les used to work on the physics of buildings – mainly energy conservation, ventilation and acoustics. After retiring he worked with charities including taking disabled people and their carers for narrow boat trips, helping people with computer problems, and working for what was the Citizens Advice Bureau. Les is married to Ewa and has two grown up daughters, Annie and Helen. What does your job/role involve? Chairing committee meetings, maintaining contact with the members through a Newsletter and strategic planning. What do you most enjoy about your job/s/role? u3a is a club for retired people, and I enjoy communicating with (and hopefully meeting) members who have a wide range of interests. What do you like best about Seaford? The friendly people and the seafront. It is a town by the sea, not a seaside town.

Nominations sought for Mayor’s Awards and Certificates Do you know someone in Seaford whose service to our town should have recognition? Seaford Town Council has a scheme for providing civic awards to members of our community who have made their mark on Seaford; whether this be working selflessly for others in the community, bringing credit or positivity to the town, going above and beyond their duties (either voluntary or paid) or displaying great bravery in the face of adversity. Nominations for the Mayor’s Awards 2020/21 are now open. The categories this year are: Award for Health Promotion in Seaford including running, walking, healthy eating, and conversations that help overcome isolation. Award for Sustainability in Seaford including minimising the use of water, energy pollution prevention and control and ‘greening initiatives’. Award for Intergenerational Activities – promoting relationships between older and younger residents of Seaford. In addition to the Mayor’s Awards there is a Special Award made to an individual who has gone above and beyond with their services to the town and its residents. This is The Don Mabey Award for outstanding services to the town, this year including promoting business, community or tourism. The Don Mabey Award was introduced in 2014 in memory of Don Mabey MBE, who was a Freeman of the Town and known to many for all the work he did in and around the town and for its organisations. These Awards are to be presented during the Town Forum in April 2021 or in a ‘virtual’ replacement for that meeting. This year as well as Awards there will be COVID Hero Certificates – for individuals, groups and organisations that have provided exemplary service, comfort or support during the pandemic as it affects Seaford.

60

The Certificates will be presented by the Mayor Cllrs Rodney Reed and the Deputy Mayor Cllr Jean Cash, during February. Nominations for the Mayor’s Awards and the COVID Hero Certificates should b e emailed to Sue Treadwell: mayors.secretaryseaford towncouncil.gov.uk and received on or before 28th January. Nominations for awards or certificates need to include the name, address, contact number and email of the person making the nomination and the details of the person, group or organisation being nominated . There also needs to be a brief paragraph about why the nomination is being made. There is no guarantee of an award as a result of a public nomination, but due consideration will be given to all nominations received. The unprecedented challenges presented by the pandemic have also generated fresh expressions of Seaford’s resilience and community spirit. We are not yet out of the woods, but we have an opportunity to recognise the selfless service and personal commitment that has enabled us to show Seaford and our community in its true colours. Finally, thank you to the schools who sent in children’s designs for the Mayor’s Christmas Card and thanks to the other groups and individuals who sent in ‘The First Christmas Reimagined in Seaford’ designs. All of the designs that were received have been posted in the Mayors Facebook – please do take a look! @ mayorofseaford. The Co-op Local Community Fund has generously donated £2,563 to The Youth Counselling Project. This sum is more than enough to provide 10 much-needed sessions of therapy for each of five children who will be helped to go into the new year and beyond feeling much more grounded and happy. The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) is committed to providing 75 school students with therapy during the current academic year. The organisation acts as a facilitator to provide specially trained therapists who go into the town’s schools to deliver its service within the schools with whom we work. They liaise closely with the school and together identify students who might benefit from our support. 11 per cent of boys and eight per cent of girls aged 5 to 16 have a clinically significant mental health problem, which often presents as self-harming. These young people have a chance of significantly improving their lives if they are treated early enough.

TYCP relies on funding resulting from applications for grants from trusts, businesses and other philanthropic organisations, like the Co-op fund and The National Lottery. Meanwhile our local fundraising team normally generates awareness and funds through events held throughout the year. Unfortunately this has not been possible this year due to Covid guidelines and regulations so we are really grateful for gifts whether in kind or money directly to TYCP, through JustGiving, Amazon Smile or Lewes Local Lottery. For more ideas please visit www.tycp.org.uk/donate TYCP is really grateful for all help, so was delighted to receive a festive hamper of goodies from Morrison’s, presented to TYCP chair Julia Hancock by Morrison’s Community Champion Carole Croll. This has been handed over to Seaford Head School who were holding a competition to win it. Photo: TYCP chair Julia Hancock with the Morrison’s hamper.

New Senior Student Team appointed at Seaford Head Sixth Form

Interviews took place last week at Seaford Head Sixth Form to appoint the new Senior Students from Year 12 who will take over from the current Year 13 group. Anna Branson and Tarnnia Baldwin were appointed Head Students and will chair the Whole School Council.

Anna said: ‘I’m really proud to have made Head Student and I hope that I’ll be able to make the school more engaged within the whole community’. Moran Haj-Yahya and Jonathan Rollings were appointed to the role of KS5 representatives and will be sharing the views of sixth form students on the Whole School Council. Moran said: ‘I am looking forward to collaborating with other year groups to continue the good work that our school already does with supporting students’ mental health and wellbeing.’

Fleur Read-Riseley and Reuben Male were also appointed to the sixth form committee with the responsibility of leading on Charity Events and Environment respectively. Mr Rob Handy, Assistant Head teacher and KS5 leader: ‘Our Senior Students play an incredibly important and active role in the running of the school through helping to coordinate and respond to the “Student Voice”. It is important to me that we nurture a learning environment where students are known as individuals and feel supported so that they can achieve their full potential, no matter where their Post-18 journey may lead them.’ Photo from left: Moran Haj-Yahya, Anna Branson, Tarnnia Baldwin, Fleur Read-Riseley and Jonathan Rollings.

Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team

Well done Seaford, You’re Amazing!

We have some bittersweet news to share with you as we enter a new year and a fresh hope of life to change again to something more familiar. Despite being in Lockdown#2, during November and December, we continued to see a drop in calls to our helpline – often only one a day or even none. We’ve worked hard as a team to support our community and those vulnerable to Covid since March and we’re proud to have helped so many people to this point. And as the town set up more services to handle people’s needs, we supported our callers to become more confident and independent which, in turn meant that so many have become self-sufficient. So, we’ve decided to close the helpline from 1st January 2021.

deliveries and pharmacy options that are able to deliver prescriptions to elderly and vulnerable residents.

Found a love for volunteering? If you wish to continue helping, we understand that NHS Responders are recruiting again across East Sussex, including to help with the Coronavirus Vaccination Programme. You can visit their website https://nhsvolunteerresdponders.org.uk. Remember you can ring up and get deliveries from Burts Bakery on 01323 894318, Scoop and Weigh on 01323 899047 and Walbrins/Gabriellas Butchers/ Greengrocers on 01323 892781. Support our local businesses. Finally, Morrisons Doorstep delivery scheme means you order anything you want (except ice cream!) for next day delivery. Call 0345 611 6111 and select Option 5. This service remains free to those who are vulnerable or elderly. To help them in the store please be as specific as possible about what you want. Alternately, if you’re able to order your shopping online the supermarkets seem to have increased the number of delivery slots available.

A recorded message will remain on our number, advising those who need support to contact NHS Responders (Good Sams) on 0808 196 3646 (8am till 8pm). Over the next few weeks there’s a number of housekeeping activities we’ll need to do to put our affairs in order. Look out for a report from us in the Spring. Our Facebook group will remain in place and will be revitalised should another Emergency create the need.

We’re incredibly appreciative of all our wonderful local volunteers, the unsung heroes and heroines of the last nine months. We’re proud of everything we’ve collectively achieved and thank everyone who’s pulled together and made this possible. We hope you all had a peaceful Christmas and are looking forward to a happier 2021. Please refer to the opposite page for more useful numbers for you to cut out and keep...

Over Christmas we’re giving our dedicated team of call handlers, task dispatchers, organisers and practical volunteers a well-earned break by closing for Bank Holidays. Some of our management team will monitor the phoneline and cover any requests that arise over 29th, 30th and 31st December.

Please stay safe and remain socially distanced for now. Thank you, Seaford, for your support and community spirit. Signing off... Sarah McStravick (SVET Chair) and the rest of the SVET Team.

Information about these changes has been added to our helpline answerphone and publicised on our Facebook group, website and via other local media. We hope that as we move into a new phase and the vaccinations are rolled out, more of you will feel able to get out and about again. Meanwhile, please continue to use the advice we’ve given about local shopping

A simple way to overcome dementia communication barriers Even with masks on as we continue to deal with the ongoing Covid pandemic, we are constantly surprised at Clifden House at how much expression residents can read from our eyes and demeanour, expressed somewhere between the top of our masks and our hairline. However, as dementia is a degenerative condition, an individual’s ability to read these non-verbal expressions can deteriorate over time. We have implemented the use of simple but very effective aids for its residents. These are called ‘Communication Cards’. Communication Cards are pictorial representations of common emotions and needs and have proven to be an exceptionally useful mechanism for residents – allowing dementia sufferers to quickly and easily express themselves clearly. A person with dementia can often have difficulty communicating. They can struggle to find the right words and frequently repeat words or become stuck on a certain syllable. This can be very frustrating and often distressing for dementia sufferers. ‘I feel’ expressions are the first set of communication

cards and includes faces and words to describe how residents are feeling. Examples of emotions on the cards include worried, excited, sad and cross. Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: ‘Members of staff at Clifden House carry communication cards with them. They find them useful for engaging with residents and help overcome communication difficulties. ‘It is important for us to understand how residents are feeling and these cards are a great help. They allow us to give a more focused standard of care and help to minimise misunderstandings and potential frustration for the resident.’ Communication Cards are also very handy to use alongside everyday conversation to keep residents aware of how they are feeling and to let them know that it’s normal for them to have trouble communicating. Now more than ever we seek to offer our residents reassurance and empathy, however that can be expressed, and this is simply one more tool in our arsenal to ensure every route to sincere communication remains open to us all.

Havens Social Enterprise Honoured Havens Community Hub CIC has been recognised on the UK Social Enterprise Roll of Honour for their outstanding work supporting people throughout the pandemic at a special event bringing together the UK’s business community. The Roll of Honour was announced at Social Enterprise Futures, which took place on 25th November and saw nearly 1,000 attendees come together to celebrate the heroes of the last year. The Havens Community Hub has adapted its services and community work and has run a food waste and insecurity prevention co-op, social clubs for older people and home welfare support during the lockdowns, and supported the launch of the only volunteer driver scheme in the Lewes District – Havens Community Cars. At the Social Enterprise Futures event, the Havens Community Hub was celebrated along with others on the Social Enterprise Roll of Honour, by a session hosted by actor, comedian and director, Chris Addison. The Roll of Honour acknowledges those individuals and businesses which, over the course of an extremely challenging year, have demonstrated the strength, passion and resilience which is so characteristic of the social enterprise sector. Commenting on being named as part of the Roll of Honour, Hub founder, Paula Woolven said: ‘Social Enterprises are always at the heart of their communities, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been doing all we can to pivot our business model to keep supporting those who need it most. We feel honoured to have been recognised in this way.’ Speakers at Social Enterprise Futures included former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who commented on the success and strength of the UK’s social enterprise movement, stating: ‘there is no route to the future that does not have social enterprise at its centre’ .

Other speakers included leaders of big business such as former CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman, and economist, Kate Raworth, who stressed the sheer extent to which business needs to change to build a fairer and more sustainable economy. The event was organised by Social Enterprise UK, in partnership with social enterprise trade bodies across the home nations – Social Enterprise Northern Ireland, Social Enterprise Scotland and the Wales Co-operative Centre. New Seaford Town Clerk Welcomed Seaford Town Council is thrilled to announce that in December a new Town Clerk was welcomed onboard. Following on from a thorough and insightful recruitment process, the Town Council was delighted to offer the position of Town Clerk to local resident, Mr Adam Chugg. Adam has been Chief Executive of local charity 3VA for 12 years, and is a strong leader with a sound background in working with his staff, stakeholders and partners to achieve the organisation’s aims. Adam is fuelled with a passion for Seaford, having a good local knowledge of the town, its aspirations and needs. Adam is part of a household committed to sustaining the town, being married to a current Town Councillor. This is not unheard of in parish and town councils across the country and in a professional setting as maintained at Seaford Town Council, so the logistics of having inter-personal relationships within a local council as a workplace are easily navigated. Adam will be joining the Town Council at a crucial time, enabling him to get involved with ongoing projects including; the COVID-19 recovery strategy and planning, the 2021/22 budget setting process, and the review of the Town Council’s assets portfolio and Strategic Objectives, amongst others. Adam says: ‘It’s a pleasure and an honour to be appointed as the new TC for Seaford and I can’t wait to get started. I’m looking forward to bringing my wide range of skills and experience and my love for Seaford

I look forward to working with him.’ In what has been a challenging year, not just for the Town Council but globally, Town Councillors and staff members are looking forward to welcoming Adam to the team and working alongside him for the continued development of the Town Council on behalf of the town, its residents and visitors. Join local Seaford resident Tom Jones on his adventures around the world by sea. Published in October 2020, Tom, now 93 years old, recounts his travels whilst in the Royal Navy during WW2, journeying from Liverpool east across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Panama Canal and into the Pacific. His missions took him to New Zealand, Australia, Ceylon and Singapore before returning to the UK via Bombay, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean. After spending time back in England and working in London, Tom’s feet were soon itching to travel again, and when the opportunity to apply for a job in Trinidad came up, he took it. Before you could say Fyffes bananas, Tom was on board the banana boat and heading to the Caribbean. Following a terrible accident in Trinidad, Tom decided to take some time off and join the tourist trail visiting numerous islands in the Caribbean. Here he recalls the many places he sailed to, the people he encountered and the experiences he enjoyed or in some cases didn’t enjoy! It’s a fascinating read for anyone interested in world-wide travel and those who care to drift off to far away lands.

Greenhavens Network

Improving your Community through Trees

A tree lives for many hundreds of years – but it can also take many months of planning to plant it! Planting a new tree is exciting, but do you know how much planning is involved before the tree can go into the ground? Lots of time is spent examining service maps, land owner permissions and then checking what’s hidden below the surface. There are four voluntary community groups planting trees across our district: Trees for Seaford, Newhaven Tree Wardens, Lewes Urban Arboretum and Greenhavens Network. All these groups are made up of passionate people who volunteer their time because they care about wildlife and their communities. It’s also a great way to spend time outdoors and meet new, like-minded people.

of a CAT scanner and 4 safety signs in order for the groups to be able to plant trees safely. Karen Rigby-Faux, one of the volunteers on the course said: ‘Rob, our trainer, was great at explaining how we can keep ourselves safe when we’re planting trees on roads. I feel much more confident now in understanding the legal requirements and the practical steps we need to take.’ In fact, Rob Richardson, Wilbar Associates trainer, hopes to return to Seaford next year and join the volunteers in planting some trees! Wherever you live in our district, there’s a friendly tree-planting group nearby. All sorts of skills are needed – from planting trees and scanning for underground services, to liaising with local residents and organising events. Please get in touch to get involved.

As well as the cost of buying the trees, these groups need to raise funds for caring for the trees, and training volunteers. This year, Trees for Seaford and Greenhavens Network worked together to fund eight places on an intensive course – a legal requirement to enable the volunteers to plant trees safely on highways.

Greenhavens Network

Wilbar Associates – the course training provider – was really impressed by the work of our tree-planting volunteers. So much so that they arranged the donation

CYCLE SEAHAVEN KEEPS MEMBERS MOTIVATED THROUGH LOCKDOWN Whilst 2020 has brought some challenging and turbulent times our way it is true to say that the members of Cycle Seahaven have embraced the spirit of the club to its full. We are a club that prides itself on encouraging members to get up and go cycling with guided rides, support and friendships in abundance. Due to covid-19 restrictions our guided rides have been limited, and so we came up with new and fun ways to keep our members riding. Virtual rides became a way for everyone to take part, even those isolating at home. Our first virtual ride saw over 80 members adding their miles together to ‘Cycle Around the UK’. 14,000 miles were cycled and led the way to our next virtual challenge. ‘The Pan American Highway’. More members joined in and with over 120 taking part we managed to complete the challenge in just five weeks, a total of 19,000 miles. The photos and stories we shared kept us all motivated and inspired us to keep riding. When the rules allowed, our ride leaders stepped back into the helm and saw our many touring group rides both road and off road at varying levels being offered. Tony Roswell was the first to start back with his regular Monday rides. The ever popular Thursday night social ride was back on the calendar thanks to Kate Carver,

and our successful ladies only rides made a return thanks to Sarah Winser and Kate. Eight ladies enjoyed a lovely sunny ride to Litlington Tea Rooms for brunch before heading to Seaford Prom for some tasty ice cream. The second consisted of both a road and MTB option where both groups cycled from Seaford Prom to The Big Park, Peacehaven. As always plenty of chatter, laughter and a nice hot drink to finish. Our team of volunteer ride leaders came together in October under the guidance of Dave Sutton and Sarah Winser to run a multi-group led ride. Nine Ride Leaders and 21 riders took to their bikes on what was a blustery, cold and wet morning. Seven small groups with staggered start times allowed us all to keep to the tight restrictions but to still have a great ride out. All sharing the same route and weather and of course all enjoyed the usual refreshments, this time at Southease Youth Hostel. The club has been inundated with positive feedback and a request to do it all again once restrictions are lifted. With another multi-group ride in the planning and plenty of published rides for you to follow there really isn’t a better time to get on your bike, join our club and get exploring. Check out our website (cycleseahaven.org.uk) for more details and how to join this friendly, fantastic local cycling club. Chair, Cycle Seahaven

why should i make a will? Dear Seaford Scene readers, I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas. I would like to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year as we move away from 2020 – a year gripped by a global pandemic, which has proved distressing for individuals and businesses alike. I am the Managing Director of Penrose Wills Limited. Our head office is situated in London, however I am personally based in Seaford and cater for our Sussex clients. We are members of The Society of Will Writers and have experienced Solicitors and Legal Consultants, who are able to deal with your instructions from start to finish, yet at highly competitive prices. Anyone with assets should have a Will. Without a Will, the state will decide who inherits your assets under the law of intestacy, not you.

How Penrose Wills can help

At Penrose Wills, we are able to make the process of making your Will hassle free:

• We are able to visit you in the comfort of your

own home, OR… • We can arrange a video appointment with you on a daytime, evening or weekend that suits you. • You will be met by one of our experienced Solicitors or Legal Consultants, who will deal with your Will instructions from start to finish and provide you with expert advice throughout.

If you are single

You might want your estate divided amongst friends, relatives and charities of your choosing and in the proportions you want.

If you are married

Don’t assume ‘my other half will get everything’. Brothers, sisters or parents may have a claim. Often your children have a right to part of your estate too.

If you are retired

Maybe you made a Will a long time ago. It probably needs updating to include additional grandchildren or

94

deletion of persons you no longer feel you want to benefit.

If you are living with your partner but are not married

If this is the case, you may be treated as a single person and a surviving partner may get nothing at all.

If you are a parent

You should consider who you would like to look after your children in the event of your death by appointing a guardian in your Will. This is particularly important in the case of single parent families or unmarried parents living together. If you have not appointed a guardian in your Will, then the court will decide on the future of your children.

If you are entering into a second marriage and have children from a previous relationship

In order to ensure your children’s inheritance is protected on your death, it is essential to make a Will and seek legal advice. Not doing so could result in your new spouse receiving all or the majority of your estate on your death and your children with nothing. At Penrose Wills, we are able to create a Trust in your Will(s) to protect your share of your estate, so that it will pass to your children.

If you want to leave a legacy to charity

Your Will is an opportunity to provide a legacy for the cause or causes you care most about. Around 15% of income generated by charities in the UK comes from legacies left in Wills, and at Penrose Wills, we are passionate about working with charities and individuals alike to ensure that legacies can be gifted by Will and charities can flourish. If I can assist in any way, please feel free to give me a call on 01323 893 245 or email me at jamie@ penrosewills.co.uk I look forward to speaking with you soon. Jamie Howell, Managing Director, Penrose Wills Limited.

seaford U3a News We are turning into a nation obsessed with the news. There have been so many different new subjects we can read about in newspapers and watch on television that current affairs is a hot topic. Our collective knowledge of COVID-19, vaccines, Brexit, the American election and more, all topics which we can discuss amongst ourselves, is impressive. No surprise then that u3a met the hunger for information and discussion with not one but two groups on current affairs. If a group is oversubscribed the practice in u3a is to start another one so the maximum number of interested members can take part. Because this is a member-led organisation it is usually possible to find someone who will act as group leader to start a new group. Having too many people in a group can be counter-productive and stultify conversation. The first current affairs group to be established began each session with individual contributions which progressed to become a full-group discussion. The coffee break was followed by any quirky or odd items members had found in newspapers and magazines. The conclusion was a look at local news and any topical local activities. The subjects ranged from Brexit to science, space, climate change and a host of other topics, all of which were of interest to the 13 members who formed the group. The group leader says ‘A sense of humour is essential for this group’. The second current affairs group was called ‘What the Papers Say’ – a title with a nod to the late night television programme ‘The Papers’ (except that the u3a was looking back to the papers not forward). There were 10 members in this group and the photo shows them in session. Although it might look as if one of the members is so bored that she has resorted to reading her newspaper, she is contributing in full! Here the emphasis was on the national newspapers and the members brought along an article each for discussion. Interestingly it was rare for two members to pick the same story. Although one member brought articles about royalty and others brought articles about the environment, the bias in this group was towards politics and economics. Members who joined in these groups found them very enjoyable, and this is a good testimony for the u3a

principle of ‘fun learning’. Sadly this face-to-face participation has been removed from us, let us hope just for a while. In both cases group leaders have made an effort to keep the groups occupied either by emails or by running a short current affairs session online. Zoom has really come into its own during the pandemic. Within the u3a and other organisations people who would never have thought of using Zoom to keep in touch or to view talks and webinars are quite blasé about it now. The u3a national website has been particularly helpful, offering support and guidance for members, with links and information about video presentations, and online tutorials to help members to use digital platforms to continue learning and participating during the lockdown. Seaford u3a has offered talks online and is gearing up for more online action in the next couple of months. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. SEAFORD and DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY www.seafordhorti.com

A view from the Potting Shed

Gardeners don’t grow wonky veg on purpose, always attempting to give produce optimum conditions for a good healthy crop. Wonkies occur when something goes wrong; stony ground might produce fanged carrots, and pollination problems can cause curly cucumbers. No doubt there are ways and means to produce super wonkies for a show, I’ll leave the wonky research to you!

In the 2020 Show Programme (a 2021 show will use the same classes) I’ve noted Class 69, ‘Wonky Veg.’ This term is used by supermarkets to describe produce that doesn’t meet strict selection criteria for size, shape or appearance, but is nevertheless perfectly edible. Wonkies form a small part of the farmers crop, and in the past some would have been discarded, adding to the mountain of food waste. Now we have the opportunity to purchase these rejects, which are very good value.

Happy New year everyone, hopefully a year when we can plan ahead, for haircuts, holidays and with luck, a horticultural show. Our Chairman Sara mentioned the Annual Show in her November update letter; she is expecting bumper entries, no excuses, so we had better get planning!

Mahonia

There’s no denying that a frosted winter garden can be a thing of beauty, but the same garden can be drab on a grey day, and that’s when the winter flowering Mahonia shines through. Mahonia, also known as Oregon grape, is a useful evergreen shrub that is ideal as a specimen plant, as part of a semi-shaded shrub border, or even for ground cover, depending on the variety. The plants have attractive holly-like leaflets, but it’s the long slender spikes of yellow flowers produced in winter that make it outstanding. Mahonia is bee friendly and also produces small purple/black berries. The RHS recommends Mahonia x media ‘Charity,’ an upright shrub to 4m, with flower racemes to 35cm long in late autumn and winter. Mahonia x media ‘Winter Sun,’ is another upright winter bloomer, it has an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM). For ground cover Mahonia aquifolium ‘Apollo,’ is a vigorous, low spreading shrub that flowers in early spring. This plant also has an AGM. For best results Mahonias need moist but well drained soil in partial shade. They can be pruned to encourage bushy growth, and benefit from mulching in spring and autumn. With so many varieties to choose from it’s worth finding one for your garden.

Christmas came early for our wonderful garden at the Crouch. Instead of gifts from Santa we had a magician in the form of Alex Lucas from Tree Wizard who came along with his climbing and tree cutting equipment and lopped off branches from a couple of sycamores which had grown much too tall. And now these trees are continuing to give, from hefty branches to the tiniest twigs. Our environmentally conscious volunteers are not wasting a splinter… This judicious pruning happened in late November, giving time for volunteers to turn into elves and set to making reindeer with cute button noses and twiggy antlers from the prunings; not surprisingly the Rudolph reds were the most popular. Bird boxes were also constructed and are for sale. Other logs are to be used to construct fun stepping stones to encourage kids to peer over the fence at the wildlife pond from the safety of their own children’s garden. This area is also benefitting from a tree that fell in the ornamental garden in the Crouch. The result is an interesting installation in the children’s garden shrub bed. Our garden is again open every Wednesday between 10am and noon, but work didn’t stop during Lockdown#2, with Val laying bricks for an attractive edging in a semi-circular border of the Mediterranean area and Brian constructing a sturdy new weighing

bench from timber outside the poly tunnel. Brian also sprang into action when Katie suggested aerial strawberry beds made from half-pipe guttering on one end of the bug hotel. Incidentally, the roof garden of this is flourishing even in mid winter. However, as all gardeners know only too well, not everything that is planted is a success. Our leeks can normally be relied on, but some of them really took against a raised bed we hadn’t tried them in before and became infected with onion neck rot where the leeks become soft, split and refuse to grow any more. Allison said that there was nothing for it but to clear the bed and never use it for anything in the allium family again, although this doesn’t mean other plants can’t be sown there. So let’s see what spring and summer bring in the way of more gifts for you to enjoy. Talking of leeks, we were delighted to be able to donate some of ours, along with some apples, to Seahaven Storehouse. The past year was undeniably awful but looking back, our garden benefitted from great weather and industrious gardening by a few volunteers at a time and has rarely looked better in a modish, ever so slightly wild sort of way. 2021 can, in the words of the song, Only Get Better. So here’s to a healthy New Year to volunteers and visitors alike, and make it your resolution to drop in and see for yourselves what we are up to. The Garden Team Photos from top: With a rueful grin, Allison clears the leek bed; Alex Lucas at work on a sycamore; Reindeer made from lopped sycamore; Garden volunteer Cameron hands over surplus apples to a Seahaven Storehouse volunteer; Winter-flowering clematis displays its purplespotted underwear; Pampas grass loves the bug hotel and shed roof; Val has laid edging bricks.

Nicholas Culpeper

The complete herbal hero Just over 400 years ago, in 1616, a legend was born; a rebel who partnered up with Mother Nature to revolutionise British medicine. The herbal hero, the botanical bad boy, the father of alternative medicine – ladies and gentlemen, I give you Nicholas Culpeper. Culpeper did his growing up upstream in Isfield, just north of Lewes. The country lanes and starry Sussex skies were his classroom, and the hedges and the heavens taught him botany, astronomy and astrology. He learnt about love too. In 1634, Culpeper and his Sussex sweetheart planned a secret Lewes wedding and a speedy elopement to the Netherlands. But tragedy struck when his love-struck lady’s carriage was struck by a lightning bolt en-route to the ceremony. She died instantly.

There’s no cure for a broken heart and Culpeper left Sussex to start a new life in London. He threw himself into his work as a lowly apothecary’s assistant, cataloguing medicinal herbs on Threadneedle Street. At this time, medicine was only practised by elite physicians. They would charge exorbitant prices for their secret remedies and would not even demean themselves to talk to patients, instead requesting a sample of urine to make their diagnosis. Culpeper believed medical treatment should be available to all – not just the privileged. Setting up his own practice in a poorer part of London, Culpeper started treating forty patients a day with herbal cures derived from English plants. Then he dropped his botanical bombshell. Culpeper published an incredible tome that instructed people how to pick their own remedies, free of charge, from the hedges and meadows. The book was ‘The English Physitian’ (1652, later enlarged as ‘The Complete Herbal’). His book promoted and preserved folk remedies at a time when physicians and priests were discrediting village healers and preventing them from passing along their traditional knowledge. Enraged, the medical establishment accused Culpeper of witchcraft. But his Complete Herbal endured. It’s been in continuous print longer than any other non-religious English language book, running rings around Tolkien and Rowling and their tales of hocus-pocus. No doubt Culpeper’s herbal remedies could have come in useful for some of you over the festive period; wild privet (for headaches), blackthorn (for indigestion), rosemary (for flatulence) and the juice of ivy berries ‘snuffed up into the nose’ (for hangovers). So, start 2021 by raising your Nutribullets on and ginseng teas to the healing properties of Mother Nature, and to four centuries of Nicholas Culpeper.
