Welcome

to the February issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine. Now that the festive dust has settled and the tinsel has been packed away, we can look forward to a more positive year ahead – with longer days and the appearance of new green shoots, spring is on its way! The most notable date this month is of course Valentine’s Day on the 14th, and Seaford Museum offers us an insight into the origins of this romantic day on page 12. This month’s front cover is by Seaford artist Julia Clark, who is holding a solo exhibition, Energy Solace, at South Downs YHA, see page 18, whilst Gallery Uno is unveiling its new exhibition of arts and crafts on page 20 – valentine’s gifts to purchase perhaps? We have news from Seaford Natural History Society; including the restoration project of Seaford Head Dewpond on page 83, and find out how drones are being used to manage the coastal erosion, also at Seaford Head, see page 70. Seaford & Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch is back with useful information and advice on keeping our neighbourhood safe (page 24), and find out what’s been happening recently with the Royal Society of St George on page 97. Don’t miss the stunning photographs by members of Seaford Photographic Society on page 8, and if you’re a business owner in Seaford, why not put your business forward for the 17th Annual Seahaven Business Awards? (See page 26). All this and much more in your February issue! Enjoy! Fran Tegg. Editor

Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford this month. Be aware that events could be affected by Covid rule changes announced after the time of writing but otherwise please show your support for the events below, all of which have taken a lot of preparation and rehearsals by ever-optimistic organisers and participants.

Musical theatre

Lights Action Musicals should take you back to a time when ‘movies were movies’ in the illustrious world of MGM. From 3rd until 6th February, Seaford Musical Theatre (photo above) is providing a programme packed with song and dance numbers from classic to contemporary. Enjoy the glamour at the Society’s Barn Theatre home. Tickets from Seaford Tourist Information Centre in Church Street or from Ticketsource. Showtime is 7.30pm all evenings and 2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Cinema

Staying in the Barn Theatre, Seaford Community Cinema is screening Supernova (15) (photo left) at 7.30pm on Friday 11th February as a precursor to Valentine’s Day. Directed by Harry Macqueen, this romcom stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as partners for 20 years and amateur astronomers. Tusker has early-onset dementia so is not getting on too well writing his latest book, while Sam is preparing for his final concert. Prepare to have your heart strings tugged amid glorious lakeland scenery. On Thursday 17th February at 7pm you’ll be transported to the National Theatre to see The Book

4

The cinema’s first matinée of the season takes place at 2.30pm on Sunday 20th February with the fabulous High Society (U). This Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie was shot in 1956 in VistaVision and Technicolor with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and stars Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra in a frothy remake of The Philadelphia Story. Timothy Spall as a newly-widowed man stars in The Last Bus (12A), at 7.30pm on Friday 25th February. He is attempting to travel from John O’Groats to Lands End using only his bus pass, all the while carrying the ashes of his late wife (Phyllis Logan). By journey’s end he is quite the celebrity. All tickets from Seaford Tourist Information Centre, seafordcinema.org or on the door.

Folk music

On the Verge – Out of the dark Back in December we were disappointed when the SEA Hub had to temporarily close, and our Christmas social was going to be cancelled. Our group is a mostly hardy bunch who love being outdoors in our green spaces, so we decided to meet outside instead. On a mild December evening we took torches and lanterns to light up the pitch-black evening at the Shoal, which turned out to be a perfect meeting point for some mulled wine and baked goodies, and quite invigorating hearing the sound of the waves in the background. It was great to have a chat about some of the plans and ideas for renaturing Seaford in 2022. We have started to firm up our plans to recruit green ambassadors. This could be on an informal ad hoc basis, perhaps letting us know about interesting green areas, and plant and wildlife sightings in various green spaces. For example one On the Verge member Melene has done just that during 2021, giving us a wealth of information about the plant and wildlife species spotted at many local green spaces around the town throughout the year. Some of those spaces are really quite tiny and easily missed – like the area very near to Splash Point behind the fishing boats. This is somewhere you might not expect to see many plants, however Melene reported ‘a beautiful carpet of Mayweed, White Clover, Bird’s-foot-trefoil, Thrift, Buckshorn Plantain and a tiny-leaved Sandwort’. All these spaces can be important individually (due to their unique aspect and soil type) and also collectively as part of our green space corridors, that allow pollinators such as bees and butterflies, to move through the town between larger green spaces. Can you guess where the following report was from in August? ‘More joined up and almost pretty, with Sea Lavender hugging about a third of the posts along the front edge.

6

Fine grasses with Clovers and Bird’sfoot-trefoil (with a Common Carder bee) make a neat patch of lawn in places though the Ivy and Silver Ragwort from the bank may smother them. A stoat appeared but it was very breezy, so a Red Admiral did not appear on the Hemp Agrimony until another day. There was nearly a “hedge” of Tree Mallow and Silver Ragwort plus Sea Beet, Knotgrass and naturalised Beach Aster from California’. Other plants spotted here included Ground-ivy, Medick, Buckshorn Plantain, Self-heal, Wild Carrot, Mouseear Hawkweed, Bramble and Wild Privet. (Answer is below). For larger green spaces managed by the council, we are planning to encourage small teams of volunteers to regularly check on a green space, and report back on any local issues (such as litter and vandalism). We also want to encourage observations of how biodiversity is improving. Formal surveys later in the year will then have the results fed into an exciting new mapping project. We are hoping to get funds from the Cares lottery fund, towards surveying equipment and training, so that more people can get involved with this interesting work. If you are interested in joining in, do get in touch! https://www.seafuture.org/verges-blog/ Email: ontheverge@seafuture.org Images from top: Boat Park Garden; Rottingdean Sea Lavender (often found along the seafront pavements); The Shoal. Answer to our green space teaser (written backwards) is krapraC elkcuB. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Seaford Photographic Society Seaford Photographic Society has some excellent wildlife photographers, so we were all looking forward to seeing what they came up with for the annual Nature competition. Our judge for the evening was Chris Shore, who is an FRPS, MPAGB, EFIAP and BPE5*, as well as being and ex-president of the KCPA. Colin Mitchell’s stunning kingfisher photo (photo left) deservedly took the first prize and Moorhen and Eggs by Eve Crowley (photo below) was second. Chris Dawson’s Small Red Dragonfly, which had already scored 20/20 in an earlier league competition, took third place. The judge commented several times that the images on display were of ‘an exceptionally high standard’ and he encouraged members to enter some of their work in the KCPA Annual Exhibition in 2022. For a small club like ours to get such praise from such a highly qualified photographer is something we should be very proud of! The final meeting of 2021 before our Christmas break featured two more set-subject competitions, Macro and Transport. Congratulations to Stephen Day for his first ever competition win. His photo of a reversing helicopter at Splash Point (photo left) was awarded first prize in the Transport competition, with Charlie Verrall’s monochrome image, taken on Seaford beach, in second place. Martin Brewer took third place.

8

The top three images in the Macro competition were all wildlife photos taken in members’ gardens. First place went to Chris Dawson for his image of a Crab Spider and prey. (photo right). Colin Mitchell’s very unusual image of a Barred Straw Moth looking straight at the camera (photo left) was second. Anna-Marie Armstrong’s Painted Lady butterfly, which had already scored 20/20 in one of the league competitions, took third place. These were all good examples of how you don’t need to travel to exotic locations to take award-winning photos. As I write this, the club is in the process of putting together entries for the first two external competitions of the year. The first of these is the PAGB GB Cup, which takes place in January. This is a national competition, open to the 1,000 or so photographic clubs in the UK. We don’t expect to be up there with the country’s larger clubs, but it is always interesting to see how we compare. By the time you read this the results should have been published, so keep an eye out on our website if you want to see how we did. The second is the KCPA Diamond Jubilee Competition, which is held in February, and is just for the clubs who are affiliated to the Kent County Photographic Association (KCPA), around 50, in Kent, South London and part of East Sussex. Last time we entered this, in 2020, we came 28th out of the 33 clubs that entered, which we are hoping to improve on this time. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including programme of events, successful images, competition results, and how you can join us. It is updated every week.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Happy Valentine’s Day Dr Sally White considers the development of the tradition Ah, Valentine’s Day Cards. All red roses and anonymous declarations of love. But it wasn’t always so simple. Back in 1537, King Henry VIII declared by Royal Charter that Valentine’s Day would be a public holiday and chose 14th February as the official day of celebration. Cromwell abolished Valentine’s Day along with many other enjoyable festivals but it was reinstated after the Restoration in 1666. In 1756 one writer described the great lengths some people undertook to discover the name of their Valentine. This young lady used several techniques, just to be sure. ‘Last Friday was Valentine’s Day, and the night before, I got five bay leaves and pinned four of them to the four corners of my pillow and fifth to the middle; and then, if I dreamt of my sweetheart, Betty said we should be married before the year was out. But to make it more sure, I boiled an egg hard, and took out the yolk, and filled it with salt; and when I went to bed, ate it, shell and all without speaking or drinking after it. We also wrote out lovers’ names upon bits of paper, and rolled them up in clay, and put them into water; and the first that rose up was to be our Valentine. Would you think it, Mr Blossom was my man. I lay abed and shut my eyes all the morning, ‘till he came to our house; for I would not have seen another man before him for all the world’.’ When using the bay leaf method many people repeated ‘Dear Guardian Angel, let me have what I so earnestly do crave, a Valentine imbued with love, who will both true and constant prove.’ In the sixteenth – seventeenth centuries, gloves, decorated stay busks, lace bobbins and knitting sheaths were all considered appropriate presents for a lad to give to his Valentine. In some parts of the country a girl expected her Valentine to give her a pair of new gloves to wear on Easter Sunday. Samuel Pepys refers to Valentine’s Day a number of times in his diaries and mentions the buying of gloves and garters as presents. Parsimonious man that he was,

12

he moaned about the expense of having to buy his wife a present each year since he had told her she would always be his Valentine. He refers to the Duke of York giving Lady Arabella Stuart a ring worth £800. By the early 19th century, a large number of rude and crude Valentine cards were being sent, and as the recipient had to pay 1d to receive post rather than the sender, it was costing the recipients dear – fathers were getting fed up. In 1829 Post Offices were warned that all undelivered (i.e unpaid for) Valentines must be sent to the Dead Letter Office. Mind you Valentine’s Day was the busiest time of the year for the Post Office so the revenue was important. In the 1830’s postmen were so busy in the days leading up to 14th February that they were given a refreshment allowance. Valentine Cards were often hand-painted on a quarto sheet of paper which was then folded and sealed as sending an envelope was charged additional postage. There is also a question concerning the language of flowers, showing how careful men needed to be in choosing the bouquet for their Valentine. Heartsease stand for friendship not love, carnations for jealousy, tulips for honour, snowdrops for hope and lily of the valley for amiability. Red roses declared true love but white roses meant ‘I love you not!’ Colour was not just important with roses. Generally yellow showed jealousy and pink, innocent love. One rose shows love, 12, gratitude, 25 congratulations and 50 unconditional love. It was all a bit more complicated than sending a saucy card to someone – unsigned, of course. But today, about 50 million roses are given each year worldwide at Valentines. It’s not yet known what affect ‘virtual’ bouquets or cards have had on the market. And around 15% of American women have admitted to buying themselves Valentine’s cards and presents. Happy Valentine’s Day! Dr Sally White, Seaford Museum & Heritage Society.

Many distinguished local dignitaries, representatives from local charities and members of the public were able to attend and support the Mayor. The service was led by the Mayor’s Chaplain and Minister of Seaford Baptist Church, the Revd. Andy Machin. Cllr Reed thanked the congregation who were present in the Church for attending and greeted those who joined the livestream from home. In his Address Cllr Reed continued with his theme from the Civic

Service; the importance of Faith and Community in these changing and challenging times. ‘I am grateful to the many people whose adaptability made the Carol Service possible. The four Primary Schools who tried valiantly to send their choirs to perform, including the two schools who sent their choir videos which were greatly appreciated in the Church and on the livestream. I express my gratitude to the Mayor’s Chaplain the Minister of Seaford Baptist Church, Rev. Andy Machin for leading the Service and for his Message, to all those who took part in the Service and last but not least my thanks to the church volunteers for their organising and hard work.’ With thanks to the generosity of the congregation, a retiring collection of £171 was collected for Waves, a local family support charity. Energy Solace Award-winning local artist Julia Clark has an exciting solo exhibition from 1st February at the South Downs YHA called Energy Solace. Julia explains ‘We wanted a title encapsulating the painting’s visual movement and energy, but also the place I mentally moved into whilst painting. Working on them has been a real solace.’ Invited to exhibit by YHA Artist in Residence Ashley Hyland, Julia said ‘This is a brand new collection of abstract paintings I’m very excited about!’ Julia will be hosting Meet the Artist days when prints and other items will be available for sale, including the opportunity to chat to Julia about her work and inspiration. Julia will also be running workshops in the Spring and be involved in events at the YHA during the summer. Years of creative work and training have led Julia to a passion for mixed media art. Julia tries to create pieces that take the viewer somewhere that evoke memories of good experiences. ‘When possible I use recycled materials and don’t waste a scrap. Living by the coast and countryside, I’m so inspired by my surroundings. I’ve had amazing feedback from people receiving or just viewing my work. It’s a great mental lift to give and get this from my art. These paintings are a new direction that I have longed to take, encouraged by Ashley. ‘2019 was a great year artistically, with positive feedback, and lovely commissions. I was so excited for 2020. Unfortunately of course, my plans were scuppered by Covid and my mental health took a real dive. My husband encouraged me to claw back some creative time, it really made such a difference to me and how much I could support the family in return. It can’t be underestimated how much a positive impact creativity can have on wellbeing, whatever you do, sketching, doodling, painting.’

18

Throughout 2021 Julia worked to get her positive focus back, getting involved in the local artist community, joining the Seaford Art Club and connecting with other local artist groups who regularly exhibit. ‘I felt a bit like the fog had lifted, it was great to get inspiration and make new friends too.’ Alice Jackman, curator says: ‘Julia’s work is full of vibrancy and teeming with life. In an image one can feel the buzz of energy and the calmness of nature at play on the same canvas. Her use of colours is thoughtful and considered, in a way that makes for a beautiful piece of art.’ Julia’s artwork can be seen throughout February at the South Downs YHA on the A26. There is plenty of free parking, delicious refreshments and some beautiful countryside to explore at the same time.More details on the event and Julia’s online artwork can be viewed through https://linktr.ee/juliaclark. UNO22 TWO: A new month, a new exhibition; a tonic for late winter Gallery Uno, 14 High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Open Daily: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Wednesdays 10am – 1pm from Thursday 3rd February until Tuesday 1st March. At Gallery Uno it’s a new month and so a new exhibition of exquisite art, design and craft from artists and creators gathered from around Sussex. Joining a number of regular exhibitors at 14A High Street UNO welcomes a further six more Sussex Arts Collective members who have yet to show at the group’s new dedicated venue including new members, painter Janet Roland and wood turner Dave Gillett. As visitors to their three previous displays of work will testify, this show will be a real tonic for the senses during these dark cold days of late winter months. Pop in and get your dose of creative reinvigoration. Amongst the returning exhibitors will be the ever popular jeweller/metal worker and Seaford’s very own Amanda Zoe. Amanda is a longstanding and stalwart member of the Sussex Arts Collective. So deservedly she is featured here as this month’s member under the spotlight.

Amanda Zoe BA Hons Amanda Zoe has lived and worked in Seaford for eighteen years. After finishing her degree in metal and ceramics at Brighton University, Sussex seemed a great place to stay. She moved to Seaford when her three children were small and the family needed a bigger house and garden. Amanda’s work is in metal, silver, gold, copper and brass, from jewellery in enamel, gold, silver and precious and semi-precious stones, to patinated copper and brass mirrors and clocks. Her designs are inspired by the local downland and seascapes. The colourful enamel jewellery uses

20

landscape detail and pattern. The enamelling has engraved detail which shows through the transparent enamel in a technique called champlevé. She has recently produced gemstone and silver work which uses the technique of engraving to enhance the surface around the gems. Engraving and enamelling are very controlled techniques – the rules must be learnt and followed. The landscape-patinated clocks and mirrors however, allow for much more spontaneity and freedom in their creation. Drawing is central to Amanda’s designs and techniques. To keep up her drawing skills she does a life drawing class weekly at the Paddock studios in Lewes. Amanda normally spends part of the week teaching small groups here in her Seaford studio and one evening at the Workshop in Lewes, and the rest making her own work. She is never completely alone in her studio as her dogs Bugsy and Patsy keep her company. Bugsy is a recue Pug cross, Patsy is a Chug rehomed only a few weeks ago. The Sussex Arts Collective is an accomplished group of Sussex makers which Amanda has enjoyed showing with since it began some years ago. She also sells work in the Sussex Guild shop Southover Grange Lewes, Julian Stephens’ Gallery Brighton and in her own Seaford Artists Open House, which she opens biannually and on her website. Amanda is a member of the Sussex Arts Collective, the Sussex Guild of designer makers, the Guild of Jewellery Designers, and the Guild of enamellers. SEAFORD ROTARY

Seaford welcomes back Santa on his Christmas Sleigh

Following the cancellation of his visit last year, Santa and his elves visited Seaford before Christmas. During seventeen December evenings, he travelled around the streets of Seaford and stopped off in Broad Street on three Saturday mornings and on Christmas Eve. It was lovely to see the smiles and looks of wonder on children’s faces, and the joy of their parents as they talked to, and received their ‘magic’ sweets, from Santa. Seaford Rotary would like to give a sincere thank you to the people of Seaford for their support and contributions to the Rotary Christmas collections. The total collection raised a massive sum in excess of £13,300, which is 20% more than the monies collected when Santa last visited Seaford in 2019, and which itself was a record sum. The 2021 sum included a phenomenal collection on a single evening of more than £930 on one route. Seaford Rotary would not have been able to collect such a generous sum of money however, if it was not for the help provided by 46 non-Rotarian volunteers who between them filled 97 (59.1%) of the 164 collecting slots. Our grateful thanks go to all those who braved the elements to help us throughout evenings and Saturday mornings in December. Seaford Rotary would also like to say thank you for all the wonderful comments on social media sites, appreciating what Seaford Rotary does in this town. These comments are much appreciated. Compared to previous years the weather was relatively kind. Only one collection was abandoned, that planned for Tuesday 7th December due to storm Barra, a hurricane-force cyclone with damaging gusts and heavy rainfall. The collection was subsequently carried out on a dry Saturday evening. Otherwise, evenings were generally dry and mild, although the fingers and toes of Santa’s elves were reliant on strong dry shoes and warm clothing. The sleigh incorporated a tracking facility for the first time, and social media was used to provide information as to Santa’s route each evening and how this could be

22

followed. The tracker was introduced to enable parents to have advance warning of the approach of the sleigh, thereby avoiding delays waiting for children to be ready to meet Santa. The tracker was in some cases too successful, as parents who missed the sleigh one evening or the sleigh did not go past their house, bundled their offspring into the family car and found Santa’s sleigh using the tracker. This December due to covid social distancing restrictions it was not possible for children to climb up on the sleigh. Accordingly, any photographs had to be taken with children standing in front of Santa’s sleigh. Once again, Seaford Rotary would like to express our sincere thanks to all who have given so generously this December, whether it be their time to help with the collections or their donations. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information contact us on www.seafordrotary.org.uk.

SINGING FOR FUN For adults of all ages and abilities Seaford musician Martin Neill set up this exciting Community Choir in September 2019. The aim of the choir is to raise money for Cancer Research UK, as well as the opportunity to meet up, make friends, and enjoy singing together. Despite being in lockdown for much of the choir’s existence, when rehearsals were held over Zoom, an amazing £5,000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK so far. This has been achieved through several concerts, and members kindly donating £5 each week, if they are able to. We are very excited to announce that we have acquired the services of an excellent accompanist for 2022. This is a paid position, and in order that members’ donations continue to go straight to CRUK, we are looking for local businesses to sponsor us. We have already had an amazing donation of £500 from Seaford Masonic Lodge, which means we can benefit from an accompanist for several months. If any local businesses would like to sponsor us, please contact Martin Neill at Martinneill139@gmail.com.

Like to sing for the sheer joy of it? ...then join us each week for a time of musical fun!

Wednesdays 11am – 12pm Thursdays 7pm – 8pm Seaford Baptist Church Price £6 on the door

No need to read music – words are provided!

Please contact Sally-Ann Fatkin Landline: 01323 365 495 Mobile: 07799 818 590

In return, we will acknowledge your sponsorship, using your logo, in Social Media and concert programmes. We are now looking for new members to come along and try the Seaford Sings experience. We sing a huge range of music, from Martin’s own songs (he’s a published songwriter) to musicals, sea shanties, folk, classical and pop. No audition necessary. The important thing is that we have fun, we have nice chats in the interval, and we raise lots of money for Cancer Research UK! What’s not to like? Rehearsals are on Thursdays 7.30pm – 9pm, at Seaford Baptist Church, Belgrave Road. Please email Martin at: Martinneill139@gmail.com or phone 07925 548217 for more information. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it. To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup A very hearty hello from all of us at NHW to the Great Neighbours of Seaford in what is hopefully a rekindling year. Having endured endless hokey-pokey of lockdowns, isolation, masking up, social distancing and the like, we are very much hoping that the light we see at the end of the tunnel is a lasting one. We have been quiet here at NHW, but very busy behind the scenes doing what we do. Crime is still at an all-time low for Seaford & Bishopstone and to see how we compare to other towns in Sussex, you can see all the statistics here https://www.sussex.police.uk/ area/your-area/sussex/lewes/ It is proven that where there is a visible NHW that crime is reduced by between 16% and 26%. Visible means a roundel on your door, and an NHW sign on your street. An active NHW where neighbours keep an eye out for each other, can reduce crime to almost nil. We are lucky here in Seaford that we do have a great community and looking out for each other comes naturally to us. That’s the core of our ethos – by being Great Neighbours, we keep our town a happy and safe place to live, to visit and to work.

!

We celebrated our Association’s 35th Birthday in 2021 and this year, Neighbourhood Watch UK is 40 years old. To celebrate this, there is a brand spanking new logo that schemes across the country will use for this anniversary year. We take tremendous pride in Seaford that we were one of the first schemes in the UK and certainly the longest running association. We are also one of the very few independently funded schemes in the country and through our autonomy, we do an awful lot to support our community and our community endeavours. This includes support by way of donations to our food banks, women’s refuge and women and childrens support organisations, as well as assistance to our veteran associations. Our subs have not changed in more than five years, and Association membership subs are still a steal at £3 a year per household, reduced to £2 a year for pensioner households. These subs keep us ticking along and enable us to distribute roundels and No Cold Calling decals for your doors, keep our website up and running, renew and replace street signage, and produce newsletters and mail drops. That said, it is renewal season. You can find the renewal form below if you like doing things the old way, or do it as quick as a flash online at www.sandbnhw.org/join.

Maria Caulfield MP for Lewes

As your Member of Parliament I try to be as accessible as possible to residents. I hold regular advice surgeries across the constituency. If you would like an appointment to discuss an issue or concern please do not hesitate to contact me

Scams are still rife and have become ever more sophisticated and insidious. For invaluable information and guidance on how to stay safe and savvy, please visit these three websites; www.friendsagainstscams. org.uk, www.ourwatch.org.uk/protectfromfraud and www.sussex.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/ fa/fraud/. One of our core focus points for 2022 is the safety of women and girls. This is a precariously delicate area of focus and vital if we want to eradicate gender-based violence in our communities. To learn more about what GBV is, and the quite astonishing statistics surrounding GBV, please see this article from The World Bank from 2019 www.worldbank.org/en/topic/socialsustainability/ brief/violence-against-women-and-girls. Sussex Police recently ran a survey regarding violence against women and girls, and while that survey is now closed, the page has invaluable advice for anyone who wants to know more, and to understand how to be involved in eradicating it. The page can be found here: www.sussex. police.uk/news/sussex/news/force-news/sussex-policelaunches-survey-on-crime-against-women-and-girls.

One way to become involved is to join www. whiteribbon.org.uk or www.safespacesussex.org.uk/dothe-right-thing. The safety of all of us starts with each one of us and being informed is a great place to start. On being informed, a great resource for information and safety advice is from our very own Sussex Police – their website is crammed full of advice from those who know best. Visit: www.sussex.police.uk/advice/adviceand-information for details. Having had a few queries about neighbourly issues, we discovered this resource on the Lewes Council webpages www.lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk/housing/ nuisance. If you are finding it hard to deal with neighbourly issues, this is an invaluable resource. That brings us to the end of this Roundup. Keep an eye peeled for more regular email newsletters, and if you haven’t already subscribed to the mailing list, you can do so at www.sandbnhw.org, where you can also order replacement roundels and decals if you need to. From all of us, our very best regards. Be safe and keep being the Great Neighbours that you are.

Celebrate Business Success and enter Seahaven’s 17th Annual Business Awards

If you run a business in Seaford, Newhaven or Peacehaven, the annual SBA’s, as they are known, are an excellent opportunity to gain recognition for your business in East Sussex. This year the Awards will be hosted by John Young, well known for presenting and reporting BBC News for over 30 years. John now uses those insights to help businesses do what news journalists do... communicate fast, meet eye-watering deadlines, and get more done on the day. The Seahaven Business Awards celebrate professionalism, creativity, innovation and business excellence, and have become an important feature in the local business calendar. Winners include businesses from every sector and provide business owners, small and large, with the chance to tell people about their company’s success story. There are seven categories, and three businesses are shortlisted in each category, with finalists invited to the Awards Ceremony and Dinner on 13th May 2022.

Mike Shorer, President of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce, said, ‘It has been two years since we held the awards. We have some brilliant businesses in the area. We hope they will come forward as we would like to celebrate their success. The three Chamber Presidents look forward to discovering new leaders and innovative businesses to celebrate in 2022. Newhaven and its sister towns of Seaford and Peacehaven are great places to run a business, and numerous companies deserve recognition for their achievements.’ Businesses have until 1st April to apply, but Mike suggests making an early start to your entry by thinking about evidence of your success, customers reviews and what makes you stand out from the competition. Categories include Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Best Environmental Business, Best Eatery, Best Customer Service, Best New Business and the President’s Award, Young Business Person of the Year. The SBA independent judges include two local Sussex MPs, Maria Caulfield and Lloyd Russell-Moyle. These local companies and organisations proudly support the awards which could not be held without their support: Veolia, Newhaven Enterprise Zone, CleanKill, Meeching Estate Agents, Fine Marketing, Co-op Funeralcare, HM Bookkeeping and Payroll, Newhaven Enterprise Centre, Arlette’s Florists, The Sussex Sign Company, Swindell’s Chartered Accountants, V R Flowers & Son, Experience It Now Travel and SeahavenFM. by Anthony Doerr

Marie-Laure is blind. She lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris forcing father and daughter to flee to the home of Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle, carrying what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. Werner Pfennig is an orphan, growing up in a mining town with his younger sister, learning about the world through a crude radio they find. Werner’s expertise in fixing radios makes him a valuable asset to the Nazis as they track down the resistance.

There is a running theme of interconnectedness, of invisible lives running parallel to one another, yet sometimes coming together in the strangest of ways. Marie-Laure and Werner are from different worlds, yet each influences the other. All the Light We Cannot See is a haunting novel. The elegant prose and engaging, heartbreaking stories will remain with you long after you’ve reached the final page. The title hints at the fact that just as we only see a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, so we are only ever aware of a fraction of the spectrum of history. But if we could look deeper, we’d see the untold stories and they would be beautiful and strangely luminescent in their own right. Tash Donovan IN

Doerr deftly interweaves the lives of these two youngsters, and along the way shows us how, against

all the odds, people mostly do try to be good to one another. This book is built on beautiful imagery. Both in the literal sense – vividly evoking 1940s Paris and Germany – and the metaphorical as it’s woven through with scientific and philosophical references to light, to seeing and not seeing, and the differences between the two. It’s the beautiful and harrowing story of two childhoods torn apart by war. We learn how Mari-Laure and Werner are both forced along paths they did not choose due to their desperate personal circumstances.

The results of our recent survey show that most of our members are not yet in favour of indoor gatherings, so we decided to cancel January’s Fête des Rois, and will continue to organise our programme of sociable events with safety in mind. being introduced for those thought to benefit from them. This academic year TYCP is on course, thanks to generous donations from the local community and from national foundations, to aid up to 85 children from all five of Seaford’s primary and comprehensive schools, but none of this vital assistance would happen without these contributions.

Christmas began for me with the utterly wonderful A Winter Concert put on by international opera singer Dame Felicity Lott, violinist Maeve Jenkinson who is Musical Director of the Corelli Ensemble and pianist Martin Neill, a freelance composer who has won several international composition competitions. Well, their programme certainly reignited a love of music and singing among those at a full St Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone. The concert, which raised an amazingly generous £392 for The Youth Counselling Project, included Gabriel’s Message and I Wonder as I Wander, arranged by Neill, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, heart-stoppingly played by Jenkinson, and Dame Felicity singing Morgen by Richard Strauss, Vilja’s Song by Franz Lehar and Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Harold Arlen). Christmas was ushered in with Howard Blake’s The Snowman, the traditional Silent Night and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.

So huge thanks also go to Jane Reeves’ The Archway Choir who allowed us to rattle a bucket when they sang at Trafalgar Square, raising £167. And to The Royal Society of St George which has given us £764 to provide resources for the counsellors to use, particularly with younger children. And to set the New Year off with a splendid bang, we have received £2,100 from the Pixel Fund, which is focused on granting money towards the mental health and wellbeing of children and young adults in the UK. What a great way to start 2022! Thank you everyone. If you would like to help too please go to www.tycp. org.uk and go to the Donate page where there are suggestions including JustGiving, AmazonSmile, the Local Lottery and gifts in lieu. Andrea Hargreaves,TYCP team member

I am sure many of us reflected that this happiness might not be felt by all young people, too many of whom are suffering mental health problems. The schools-based The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) was founded to provide therapists to counsel young people judged to be in need of this kind of care. Money raised for specially trained counsellors to provide 10 sessions at around £500 for each child. Group sessions are also

exotic veg

t

Exotic veg did not feature in my ’50s childhood. Meat and two veg in those post war years meant spuds, swede, carrots and greens, with peas and beans in their season and salad veg in the summer. Now our supermarkets are overflowing with exotic fruit and veg from every corner of the globe, and you can easily buy seeds to grow your own.

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD The February Social Evening is on Tuesday 22nd 7pm at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road. Our speaker is award-winning metal sculptor Paul Cox, who will entertain us with, My Journey So Far. Plus a Competition – 5 Hellebore Flower Heads Floating in Water. Don’t forget your tickets, £4 each, for 29th March Social Evening with actor Tony Harris and a Costumed Talk About Winston Churchill. Tickets from Social Sec. Jan Williams.

to d o

February is a good time to get a head start with exotics like aubergines, chillies and sweet peppers, that require a long growing season to mature and ripen. You will need a heated propagator as the seeds require a minimum temperature of 21ºC to germinate, plus a warm, well lit place for growing on. Remember these are frost-tender plants that can’t stand cold, but not difficult, less work than tomatoes says Alan Titchmarsh. Plant out in the greenhouse from mid-May, or outdoors in a warm, sheltered spot in June. Chillies are especially attractive plants for a sunny patio.

established by Pope Gelasius 1 in AD 496, in honour of Saint Valentine of Rome, who was martyred on February 14th in AD 269. Many legends/folk traditions became associated with St Valentine over the centuries, leading to the present day’s worldwide, commercialised celebration of romance. Red roses, symbolic of love, are a popular choice for Valentine’s Day. The majority of roses sold in the UK are grown in Kenya and Ethiopia, however the best come from Ecuador, which along with Colombia is one of the biggest producers and exporters of roses worldwide. What about UK grown? If your beloved is not enamoured by all those air miles, there are online companies that specialise in UK grown flowers, but it’s unlikely to be roses in February. How about a potted rose? It will be flowerless on Valentine’s Day, but Precious Love, My Valentine or ‘Thinking of you,’ are named roses that can’t fail to impress your gardening sweetheart!

what

Despite being downgraded by the R C Church in 1969, Saint Valentine’s Day is still widely celebrated, much to the gratitude of the cut flower and greetings card industries. The original Feast of Saint Valentine was

garlic, but you can still plant it now. Separate cloves from the head of garlic and use the biggest for planting. 3 Chit early and second-early seed potatoes. Sit tubers eyes up in an egg box or seed-tray and keep indoors in good light, but out of direct sunlight. Plant out late March to April. 3 Sweet peas can be sown outside 1cm deep. To speed germination and protect seedlings, cover with a cloche made from the top half of a large plastic bottle with the cap removed. They need good soil and supports. making it easier for everyone to make use of even when loaded up. Having had a mild winter up until early January, the first Wednesday of the new year saw the tender plants in our garden at the Crouch having winter capes and hats hurriedly put on in the face of a frosty forecast for the following day. OK, temperatures at the time of writing plunged several icy degrees below only for a day, but that would have been enough to severely curtail the growth of new veg shoots in the raised beds, such as young garlic and also the plants being nurtured on Brian, Val and Abdul’s new staging outside the poly tunnel. This staging will not only give us more space to bring on our newly propagated plants but also make it easier to watch over them for those of us who find bending down to the ground increasingly problematic! So it was all cold hands on deck to rig up fleece coverings in time to give these youngsters the best chance of survival. The protection, Allison said, also served to keep wildlife such as pigeons from devouring temptingly succulent new shoots – they never miss the opportunity. Thus, broad beans were netted too. Heavy rain in the days before the frost means plants placed in troughs were in danger of being in too much water, so Allison took on the very chilly job of emptying them before securing the sheeting which now will serve as a horticultural Mackintosh. Of course all this plus general tidying up required a sturdy wheelbarrow, so we were delighted to have one given to us by garden visitor Pam. Happily it’s lightweight as well as robust,

48

Meanwhile, when you read this there will be snowdrops and hellebores in a variety of colours to admire and no doubt the rhubarb, at the moment just pushing its way through the soil, will be tentatively showing some foliage, and buds will be fattening in all sorts of places. If you have rhubarb plants which are more than a couple of years old, now is the time to cover them if you want an early crop. Place as tall a container as you can find over the emerging shoots to exclude any light for up to eight weeks – then enjoy the tender young stems in whatever recipe you enjoy most! If you visit us on a warm sunny day you may even be able to drink in the scent of the Daphne as the flowers open. Hailing as it does from the Himalayas, it will simply shrug off any cold weather thrown at it. Witnessing the cycle of growth and regrowth of all sorts of plants, located where they will do best week by week, is fascinating and well worth a visit on a Wednesday morning, so please come. There’s even a flourishing plant table and if you fancy some primulas to herald spring, then we might still have a few. See you soon. The Garden Team Photos from top: Phil puts the new, to us, wheelbarrow to good use; Young garlic is guarded against frost and invaders while strawberry plants frill the edges; Outdoor staging means more plants can be over-wintered; Primulas are a bargain; Taste of spring: rhubarb shoots poke their heads up; come on boys: put your backs into it! Those broad beans need protection from avian scavengers.

Seaford Business Supports Local Charity in 2022 A family-run business The Estate Agent Content Club in Seaford is working with WOLO over the next 12 months after the organisation was chosen to become its charity of the year. WOLO, which stands for We Only Live Once, was founded by the husband and wife team Fler and Justin Wright. It helps families affected by cancer across Sussex with a wide range of support services. Jerry Lyons, the Estate Agent Content Club owner, said: ‘A friend of mine, Darren Evans, who is an ambassador for WOLO, made me aware of the brilliant work Justin, Fler, and their team do. As a business, we always choose a local charity to support over 12 months with a monthly donation and a fundraising effort – our target is to raise more than £4,000 by the end of the year.

We are delighted to be working alongside such a fantastic group of people like Team WOLO.’ Justin and Fler said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to have the support of Jerry and all at The Estate Agent Content Club in 2022. The funds they hope to raise for us will help to improve the quality of life of many families all over Sussex affected by cancer. We are very much looking forward to working with them this year.’ To find out more about Wolo, visit: www.wolofoundation.org. Photo l-r: Fler Wright, Jerry Lyons and Justin Wright.

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford Supporting St Wilfrid’s Hospice and celebrating Christmas A lunch at The Hydro was enjoyed by the members The closing event for December was the regular evening meeting at Seaford Golf Club when a new member was inducted. Members followed Government Guidance regarding COVID and were very happy to be able to continue to meet during December, and look forward to restarting their activities in January.

December was full of activities for members of Seaford Inner Wheel. The first occasion was a Christmas Cracker morning at the newly refurbished Crossway Church, which raised more than £600 by serving soup, cakes and other refreshments. The proceeds of a raffle, children’s tombola and various craft stalls all contributed to the amount of money raised for President Eileen Lynch’s chosen charity – St Wilfrid’s Hospice. The event was supported by The Town Crier and a special visit from Father Christmas. Members appreciated the opportunity to wear their Christmas jumpers and to relax with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie at a coffee morning hosted by Sue Barrett.

Seaford Little Theatre Review Fran allocated me 500 words for this review of The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society’s Production of A Christmas Carol, and the title alone takes up 14 of them. The clue though, is here: David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr’s festive comedy is a play within a play, and from the start, with Tricia Pape armed with mic as Phoebe Reece, the indefatigable chair of the society, bludgeoning members of the audience to take part with a mixture of syrup and offhand sarcasm to the finale when the ‘cast’ ineptly juggle large letters announcing THE END, Garry Fowler’s production was a rollicking triumph. Now confession time: I did not expect to enjoy this sort of comedy, but having sat determinedly stony faced for the first two minutes, I became aware of a consistent noise. OMG, it was me laughing uncontrollably along with the rest of the audience! The cast of five, with occasional appearances by Alan Lade as prop handler and stand-in Belle, did an amazing job delivering the production asides, not too sotto voce from backstage, as the Townswomen’s Guild ladies missed their entrances, impatiently told each other their lines and swapped from part to part, not always remembering which one they were playing. That the Seaford drama group not only accommodated to all this confusion but never missed a trick of great timing and vocal inflection was a feat that was a joy to watch and hear. There for instance was the always wonderful Jenny Humphries playing Scrooge and trying to climb into an upright bed fitted end-of-the-pier style with a hole for her head – well, you had to have been there – and

62

not being tall enough. A box slid from the wings enabled her to take up position in a joke that was repeated deadpan every time she met one of the ghosts. And for ghosts think sheets and shadows behind a screen. And here I must insert a bravo for Lee ColemanPowney who not only played Gordon Wince as Mrs Cratchit, Jacob Marley, The Ghost of Christmases Present and Past and Mr Fezziwig, but came up with the ingenious props. Pape as Mrs Reece took on Tiny Tim, Fred’s Wife, a Gentleman, Mrs Dilber and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, demonstrating her great ability with comedy. Angie Wright as the limping Mercedes Pimple, aka Bob Cratchit, Belle and a Boy, would have stolen the show for me were it not for newcomer to the stage Debbie Cox as Felicity Large (Snowman, The Ghost of Christmas Present, Fred, Little Fan and Old Joe). Treasure this talented woman. She can dance, sing and act with charm and ability. With this production Seaford Little Theatre increased the torque, their professionalism not confined to the stage but seen in the quality of the lighting and the humorously written programmes. The society must have had enormous fun with this show, and so did we. Just room for two more words, Fran: more please! Andrea Hargreaves Photos by Anrew Parkinson

Sexton beetles: subterranean corpse-disposal blues

Now, you got a corpse in a car, minus a head...take me to it. In Quentin Tarantino’s movie Pulp Fiction, Winston Wolf provides a professional clean-up service for two incompetent hitmen when they have a little ‘problem’ that needs solving urgently. Hopefully, illicit corpse disposal isn’t a regular dilemma for readers of this magazine – but in the natural world death, disposal, decay and decomposition are vital, constant processes which recycle the nutrients that keep our planet functioning. This clean-up duty is undertaken by a cast of unsung underworld characters. Bacteria and blowflies, fungi and foxes, worms and woodlice all put their tendrils, talons, mandibles and molars to the task. But if you want a corpse removed efficiently and cleanly, you had better call in the professionals: the sexton beetles. The sextons are members of the family Silphidae. At about 3cm long they are amongst the heavyweights of our county’s 3,000 beetle species. Some sextons can be identified by their lurid orange wing-cases; a hi-vis jacket befitting a worker at the scene of a tragedy. Now, let’s say you’ve got a dead blue tit in the back yard. Its little soul will have winged its way to that

great peanut feeder in the sky and now it’s time to return its earthly body back to the soil. Sextons, armed with super-sensitive chemoreceptors in their clubbed antennae, can detect the sweet smell of death from a mile away. The male flies in first and assesses the scene. First job – call for backup. He secretes a stink from his rear end to lure in a female and his partner arrives. Next job – secure the corpse. The beetles start beetling around the blue tit, stripping off the feathers. But – phew-wee! That smell will soon be luring in every fly in the neighbourhood, and the sextons don’t want to draw attention to their work. So, they baste the body with their antibacterial and antifungal chemicals, slowing down the decay and preventing the pong. Now the sextons live up to their name. Working together, they dig a grave and line it with feathers. The corpse is tenderly lowered down into the earth. It’s here, in this cosy crypt, that the sextons will raise their family. Eggs are laid and develop into hungry larvae which, unusually for an insect, ‘beg’ for food and are fed by their devoted parents. The bird’s body is slowly stripped of flesh and reduced to a simple skeleton. After pupation, new sexton beetles emerge from the soil and fly away, perhaps to find their own corpse or to become food for birds themselves. No eulogy, no flowers, yet it’s still a dignified, life-affirming send off. So, when it’s my time to go, just drag me into the garden and let the sextons do their job. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Using drones to capture coastal heritage before it’s lost Seaford Head, a nationally important heritage site at increasing risk of coastal erosion related to accelerating climate change, is being investigated and recorded under a new initiative involving Archaeology South-East, part of UCL’s Institute of Archaeology. Improved understanding is a necessary first step in the process of managing the loss of an archaeological site, and the Seaford Head Project is trialling ways of achieving this including 3-D modelling and surveying the site with drones. The project will also trial the use of podcasts and videos to engage local communities in a conversation about coastal change and how they feel about the eventual, inevitable loss of historic sites. The team and partners have begun capturing the nationally important archaeology of Seaford Head, East Sussex, before it is lost to coastal erosion. The headland, which includes an Iron Age hillfort and provides the iconic view of the Seven Sisters cliffs, has seen significant cliff collapses in the last year. The erosion is expected to increase in frequency and severity, with predicted rises in rainfall and storm events related to climate change. Jon Sygrave, project manager for Archaeology SouthEast, said: ‘Seaford Head is a striking and beautiful site featuring archaeology of multiple periods, including a Bronze Age bowl barrow (a type of burial mound), an Iron Age hillfort and a Second World War reinforced concrete structure. ‘Using a combination of non-intrusive archaeological techniques, we are assessing and recording the threatened heritage on Seaford Head. This includes desk-based analysis of historic maps, and aerial, topographic and geophysical survey, and could result in the discovery of previously unknown heritage assets. ‘A crucial part of this is using a drone to capture archaeological features exposed in the cliff and accurately map the site’s earthworks to create a 3D model of Seaford Head, preserving its complex heritage for future generations.’ The investigations at Seaford Head will be used to

70

provide a case study and template for other heritage agencies, landowners and community groups facing similar threats to their local heritage, to help plan and deliver local responses. The project is funded by £18,975 from Historic England with contributions from the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA). It draws together the expertise of UCL archaeologists from Archaeology South-East, artists and videographers along with several key stakeholders, principally Seaford Town Council, the SDNPA and Historic England. Marcus Jecock, Senior Archaeological Investigator and Coastal Lead at Historic England, said: ‘Coastal erosion is not a new threat, but climate change is accelerating the rate at which erosion is happening and thereby the rate at which archaeological sites of all types that exist around our coasts are being lost – often without proper record. ‘The hillfort on Seaford Head is a scheduled monument, meaning the archaeology here is recognised as nationally important. We, as a nation, cannot build sea defences to protect every stretch of coastline against erosion, so earlier this year Historic England added the site to the Heritage at Risk Register in recognition of the threat it faces. ‘At the same time, we have commissioned Archaeology South-East to map the visible, above-ground remains in detail and to conduct a geophysical survey to give us a picture of buried features within the interior. Funding this work will help us make informed decisions

on the long-term management and recording of the monument, before it falls completely into the sea.’ Adam Chugg, Town Clerk of Seaford Town Council, said: ‘As well as its archaeological significance, Seaford Head is an important area of Chalk Downland landscape, which includes a nature reserve managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, and a golf course run by Seaford Town Council. As owners and custodians of the site, we look forward to learning more about the fort before the remaining parts of it are lost to coastal erosion.’

An important part of the project is to engage the community with the findings and include the public in conversations about heritage loss between experts and policy makers. Anooshka Rawden, Cultural Heritage Lead at the South Downs National Park Authority, said: ‘This project is not only both exciting and timely given we know very little about this site, but it will also give us an opportunity to open up the conversation about heritage loss linked to landscape change. ‘The project will produce films and podcasts to open up discussions about heritage loss, and help us understand how the public feel about change and loss of this kind, particularly where we have perhaps become disconnected with the heritage in our landscape. We have the chance to rediscover lost stories that reveal the deep time of the South Downs.’

Contact Citizens Advice for more information. You might be able to pay less council tax or not pay it at all. A member of your household may be discounted, for example, if they have a severe mental impairment. You may be eligible for Council Tax Reduction (CTR) if you have a low income. Free school meal vouchers are available for children in qualifying families for February half-term and the Easter holiday. Talk to your school or contact East Sussex County Council. Seaford Striders serve up Christmas cheer at Mince Pie 10-mile race After cancellation due to Covid in 2020, the 2021 edition of the Seaford Striders Mince Pie 10-mile race was once again a sell out by mid-October, attracting a full complement of 600 runners. The race, which took place on 5th December, is organised and marshalled by Seaford Striders, raising money for the club and local charity WOLO. After a race briefing, the runners received a Thunderbirds-style countdown from 5-1 by firsttime race director Nick Farley. This was followed by an air horn blast sounded by Striders’ Chairman Rob Plant, who was trussed up and roasting in an inflatable turkey suit.

Funds raiseD for Seahaven Community Food Project The Southern Stomp Linedancers raised a final total of £677 to buy Christmas foodstuffs and treats for the Seahaven Community Food project. We presented all our purchases to Stef Lake from the organisation, knowing that it would be put to good use for members of our local communities, at the Community Supermarkets and in the Christmas hampers delivered across the area. It was fabulous to hear from Stef of the impact and benefit others would have as a result of the generosity of the dancers, a magnificent effort from the sale of the Lockdown Bears and individual donations! Joy Ashton, Southern Stomp Linedance Club www.southernstomp.com

80

The race started at 11am at the Peacehaven Leisure Centre and took in the countryside around Peacehaven, Telscombe and Saltdean. The 10-mile scenic route included both hill and trail, as well as road sections. By noon, the Striders were ready to cheer the lead runner across the line, shortly followed by 2nd, and 3rd male, and 1st female. As more and more runners finished, the Leisure Centre hall began to fill up, with the cake stall extremely busy with hungry runners topping up their sugar levels. Presentations were made to the first five male and female finishers, along with the team with the most participants, which this year was jointly crowned between Orpington Road Runners and Rogue Runners – each team having 41 runners. There were a total of 431 finishers. Race director Nick Farley said: ‘It was an extremely warm welcome back to the Seaford Striders Mince Pie 10, and as my first year as director of the race, we got it over the line! ‘After last year’s cancellation, it was great to see such a festive spirit among the runners with the majority brightening our day even more with their festive fancy dress costumes. Seaford Natural History Society

SEAFORD HEAD DEWPOND RESTORATION PROJECT

I wonder how many residents know what a dewpond is...and how many know that we have one here in Seaford? A dewpond is an artificial pond usually sited on the top of a hill, intended for livestock in areas where a natural supply of water is not readily available. Ours is right beside South Barn on Seaford Head...but it is in such a poor state of repair that the dozens of walkers that pass it daily probably think that it is a patch of grassland, unaccountably fenced off (see photo).

The Seaford Head dewpond is overgrown and so choked with invasive, non-native weeds that it looks like dry land. It has been a source of concern, particularly among members of the Seaford Natural History Society, for several years. In early 2020 the Society put together a funding bid with support from South Downs National Park and Seaford Town Council, for its renovation. We are pleased to say that the Society’s bid has just been approved. Over the past year an Ecological Assessment was undertaken, which confirmed the presence of rare plant species and the wildlife value of the proposed renovation work. Our project entails the gradual removal of non-native invasive weeds, and other vegetation to create an increasing area of open water, and improve conditions for amphibians and aquatic invertebrates. The removal of the excess vegetation has to be undertaken carefully to avoid its spread to other areas. It will be dried and burnt on site in small quantities. This work must be done by hand, not only to ensure careful control, but also to preserve the original pond liner installed in 1996. We plan to create a Friends Group who will take this work on and be responsible for on-going maintenance. We think that this has never been attempted before as most dewponds are remote in contrast to ours which is close to the main car park, with tens of thousands of people walking past it each year. A successful renovation will increase the biodiversity of the Nature Reserve, benefitting its wildlife and creating an important educational resource.

can learn more about the project, and an evening meeting later in March, time and venue to be confirmed. If you want to be part of the Dewpond Friends Group but are unable to attend either of these meetings, please contact me, Paul Baker, on prbaker2ep@btinternet.com for further information.

A new group for practicing meditators in Seaford

Science has shown that meditation has a number of mental health benefits, including a greater sense of wellbeing, equanimity and resilience. If you are a regular meditator you will know this already. It has also been shown that the benefits of meditation are greater if you meditate as part of a group. We are looking to set up a regular meditation practice in Seaford for people who are already meditating, and who want to deepen their experience and fully realise the benefits meditation can bring by meditating as part of a community. This is a nonreligious group which focuses on meditation as an aid to living better lives. If you would like to find out more about the group please email Chris Shaw at c.j.shaw@sussex.ac.uk.

Seaford u3a News I wonder if the sap is stirring yet, If wintry birds are dreaming of a mate, If frozen snowdrops feel as yet the sun And crocus fires are kindling one by one: Sing, robin, sing; I still am sore in doubt concerning Spring. (The First Spring Day by Christina Rossetti) It will come! The days are lengthening rapidly and whatever the weather we can look forward to Spring and Summer bringing with it, we hope, some respite from the worries we have had over the winter. We had some mild weather over Christmas which enabled Seaford residents to get out into the fresh air and the seafront was frequently thronged with people enjoying a stroll, sometimes in family groups or sometimes walking dogs. It brought into focus that Seaford is a pleasant place to live with plenty of open spaces and on the whole a considerate population. That might be the only compensation for the majority of Seaford u3a members for a while yet. Like many other organisations up and down the country Seaford u3a has found it difficult in the last few weeks to declare ’business as usual’. The Omicron variant of COVID burst our bubble of complacency and made us worry once more about being in crowded situations and in poorly-ventilated rooms. Roll on some sunny,

warm weather when we can hope that the virus will lose some of its potency! Talks to be given by members at the Downs Leisure Centre were postponed to safeguard the health of members. A number of home groups also failed to start after Christmas, particularly when group leaders were aware of participants having some degree of extra vulnerability. It might be that some of the talks and groups will carry on into the summer, which is something that has been contemplated previously. Although some members will be away on holiday, the greater majority would probably enjoy a continuation of getting together in groups. There is however an unfortunate feeling of ‘two steps forward and one step back’. Before Christmas the members’ tea was very much appreciated. Although it had been hoped that the u3a recorder group and a handbell ringers’ group would entertain members that was not possible and the tea became a ‘drop-in’ at the Con Club with delicious mince pies and Christmas cake. The pub lunch turned itself into a Christmas lunch and there was a good turn-out of cheery members to get into the spirit of the season. Seaford u3a members are still receiving a monthly Newsletter, and as soon as there is anything optimistic about events, groups and talks starting again members will be notified. The website at www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford has been re-vamped and is full of useful and interesting information about Seaford u3a and what we do. If you are interested in finding out about membership, email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack.

Start now if you want to ‘spring’ into a new home Make a note of the date – Sunday 20th March 2022 It’s the day we can officially say ‘goodbye winter, hello spring.’ And it doesn’t just usher in lighter, longer days and the reawakening of many parts of our natural environment... ...Spring is a busy period for the Seaford property market. Below are four tips that will help you plant the seeds so that you’ll be ready come 20th March. 1) Start now. If you are serious about a spring move, begin the process now. This will give you more than seven weeks to get everything in place. 2)

3)

Spring clean. Yes, we know you’ll be starting your spring clean a few weeks earlier, but it’ll pay dividends. Having a clean, clutter free home will make the marketing photos of your property stand out online. Prepare paperwork. One of the things that can delay a property sale is having to track down paperwork once an offer has been accepted. See off this issue early by getting all your warranties, guarantees and property-related paperwork together. We can help you if you are unsure of what you’ll need.

Think it through. Moving home is a big decision to make. So, make sure it’s the right thing for you to do at this moment in time. That may sound odd coming from an estate agent who makes their living from selling homes, but experience has shown us that homeowners should be 100 per cent certain about their decision. However, this time of year and current property market conditions make it an excellent time to sell.

If you have any property-related questions get in touch with us today. We’re here to help and have been since 1987. Stephen and Andrew

Martello Rotary News Despite the restrictions required by COVID, Seaford Martello Rotarians have been busy helping maintain the festive spirit, and fundraising for important local charities also.

2022 Calendars

From the start of Autumn, 700 of the new, improved calendars have been on sale. Over 1,000 images from local photographers (amateur and professional) were submitted, from which 24 were selected, to create the two-format 2022 calendars, printed by Tansleys, and sold for £6 (small) and £8 (large) each (envelope 50p extra).

What made these calendars special was that each came with a one-year guarantee, and after that could be used to create lovely pictures of local scenes suitable for framing and displaying in the home! My two favourite images were July 2022 small format – the Newhaven Ferry head on, by Sam Cadman, and September 2022 large format a night-time electrical storm over the mouth of Cuckmere Haven by Ben Russell. After deducting costs, we have been able to send £1,425 to the local branch of Newhaven RNLI and the same amount to the Seaford Youth Counselling Project.

Recycling Real Christmas Trees

For the last six years, Martello Rotary has provided a service for collecting the used Christmas trees after the Twelfth Night. This year was no exception. A team of six went out on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January and collected 75 trees from Seaford and Bishopstone. Saturday’s round was done under the most challenging

weather conditions and the RNLI all-weather clothing would have been more appropriate! As a result, Martello Rotary raised £470 for local charities, and helped contribute to the town’s green approach to these matters. Organiser, Julian Newton-Turner, took a moment to pose between two pines as we delivered them to the collection point at the Buckle. We weren’t sure if the water was coming from the sky or the sea at that time!

The Royal Society of St George, Seahaven Branch 2021 closed for the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George with a busy December. A good way to end not the best of years. We started the month with an invite for a couple of us to join in a reception at the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity at their base between Cuckfield and Staplefield. This was an excellent event to thank those (including our branch) for the support given. National Chairman RSSG Joanna Cadman also attended as a member of our Charitable Trust as did our Committee Member Nick and Jan Dutt. The entertainment was by the D-Day Darlings and Sergeant Major Colin Thackery, a Chelsea Pensioner who was winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2019. Next saw President Laurie Holland, Chairman Bob Peedle and Treasurer Jan White visit Florence House, Seaford to meet Mairin Colleary and Susie Silvester, both Trustees of the Youth Counselling Project, which now has a team for each of the five Seaford Schools. Our contribution was to provide finance for various items of admin and aids for all five schools. This is proving to be a very successful local charity that we have helped before. The sad news on that day, the 20th December, was that many of us were unable to get over to Beckenham, South London for the funeral of a dear friend and member, Colonel Keith Barker TD. He was an early member of the branch. He was a veteran of D Day where he received his fourth injury of the war and was awarded a mention in despatches for bravery. He had since received the French Legion d’Honour. He left the RNVR after the war as a Sub Lieutenant and moved over to the TA and became an officer with the RMP. He is sorely missed.

Our last event was on 21st December with a Christmas Lunch at the Inn on the Park, Deanlands. Although Covid affected the number present it was a glorious affair and after various lockdowns since we were there last, it was a delight to be back. Prizes were awarded for the best ‘Christmas’ style of dressing up. The judge was National Chairman Joanna Cadman. First Prize went to Bill Harrop and runner up Bob Newton for his festive socks! All the best to everyone for 2022, Bob Peedle MBE, Fellow of The Royal Society of St George and Chairman of the Seahaven Branch.

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB

Next month on 17th March we will have an imposed workshop entitled An Easter Basket and the competition will be A Foliage Arrangement – yet another challenge for our members.

We start our club meetings this year on Thursday 17th February when we will be welcoming Gaenor Circus to our club to demonstrate ‘Whirling Mad’. Gaenor is an experienced and proficient demonstrator and we are looking forward to seeing her ideas.

We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for the year are £30 and visitors are always very welcome at £5 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or Sue Ward on 01323 894848 for further details.

Our Club competition is entitled: ‘Look! No Oasis’ and this will be an opportunity to put to the test the lessons we learned at our meeting in October last year, where we were shown that it is not always essential to use floral foam when creating arrangements. We do not meet in January, but looking back to our December meeting, we all enjoyed a Christmas workshop making our own table decoration or wreath. This was an enjoyable, informal meeting when we were all able to chat together, exchange ideas and wish each other a happy Christmas. Old Town Hall Community Tea Room

On behalf of all our volunteers, may I take this opportunity to wish all our regular and occasional customers a very happy and healthy New Year. We will continue to offer everybody a friendly welcome and hopefully a pleasant stay for a tea, coffee or hot chocolate. I’m sure the conversations will be as diverse as they were in 2021, it is amazing how much our visitors know about so many subjects, however if someone just wants to come in, have a drink and read a book for half an hour or so, that’s equally fine.

For those people who don’t know where we are, just come down Church Street into South Street and we are behind the blue door on the right. As we have said before, this is the oldest continual-use building in Seaford. New visitors to the town are amazed by the history attached to such a humble building, we hope that many more local residents will come along and enjoy our hospitality. Our opening times are: Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm, and Saturday 10am to 1pm.

Remembering ‘Who I Am’ with dementia, in a care setting and in the community The National Institute for Care and Excellence (NICE) stated in 2018 that 1 million people were due to have dementia by 2021. Currently 69% of the roughly 500,000 care home residents in the UK are living with dementia. This simple fact means that a larger proportion of people with dementia in the UK are living in the community than in care. This often makes me think of how some of the practices we use at Clifden House to support our residents could assist us in how we live with those among us dealing with dementia in the community. At Clifden House we are embarking on a new adventure and upgrading our care monitoring software to better enable us to support our residents. Modelled on the Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘This is Me’ tool and other one-page profiles that are widely used in social care to improve the quality of information, our care software enables important information about the individuals in the home to be accessible to our carers whenever they need it. In this way, every interaction with a resident enables them to communicate to us ‘Who I Am’ instantly, and whatever their condition, temperament and communication is like that day. We can access: Things that are important to me Routines l Likes to talk about l What makes me feel better if I am upset or anxious l My life story l How to best support me l Wishes for the future l l

including their preferences, personal histories, backgrounds and potential, and to fully reflect their physical, mental, emotional and social needs. One section in ‘Who I Am’ offers information under ‘What makes me feel better if I’m anxious or upset?’ which gives our carers direct and personalised options that may assist us in helping that individual through what may be a difficult time in their day. A recent Telegraph article entitled ‘What it’s really like to work when you have dementia’ spoke about individuals still in employment dealing with signs of ‘forgetfulness’ and their employers’ reactions, leaving them humiliated and feeling unwanted. However, examples also existed of regular retraining, welfare support and creativity when it comes to assigning roles which can all help an individual in this position. In this way, family and friends, carers and employers can also learn to keep a track of ‘Who I Am’ for their colleagues and loved ones and, in this way, enable them to not just live with this condition, but to continue to thrive. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise everyone’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

This assists us in really knowing and respecting the people that we are caring for and supporting,

Seaford Stamp & PostCard Club The Victorian Age ushered in the great era of international exhibitions, leading from the huge success of the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, the building later moved to create Crystal Palace in South London. Other countries rushed to hold exhibitions, particularly from 1890 onwards there was hardly a year without one somewhere in the world. Paris held one in 1900, Brussels in 1910. At the same time postcards had become popular as souvenirs and a succession of exhibitions at Earls Court and Olympia can be portrayed on cards, the photo above is a view of the Latin-British Exhibition of 1911. The Franco-

British of 1908 had a complete replica Irish village called Ballymaclinton with a number of fair colleens to inhabit it in traditional clothing! After the Great War (as it was called) spirits needed to be lifted so the British Empire Exhibition of 1924/5 was held around Wembley, this was marked by the first commemorative postage stamps issued by the GPO. Special postmarks were available as well. Other exbitions were later held in Scotland and other locations in the UK. After World War Two the 1951 Festival of Britain soght to commemorate the centenary of the Great Exhibition. Held on the South Bank and other sites, it strove to promote a more modern Britain (photo above). Since then exhibitions have often become more limited in scope; I helped to construct (and demolish!) stands for a 4-yearly Telecom exhibition in Geneva in 1983, at the dawn of the internet era. Stands were not always destroyed however, for many years Seaford had a souvenir of the Paris Exhibition of 1900, in the shape of a Swiss chalet constructed by their government to promote the country (photo above). It was then carefully dismantled and brought to Seaford by Mr Emerson Bainbridge, and set up near the Crouch to be used for “the temporary reception of poor girls from the large towns”. Later run by the YWCA, it was finally demolished in 1966 and Bainbridge Close now stands on the site. Bob Brown, Chairman Seaford and District Stamp and Postcard Club
