Welcome Welcome to the February issue of Seaford Scene. Love is in the air and tradition states that February 14th is the day when birds pair up! It’s also a leap year, in which according to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men on February 29th – every four years, so watch out single men of Seaford! According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are Leap Day World Record Holders held by one family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29th. CRYING FOR MY TOWN Seaford has a long and varied History, best represented by its Martello Tower, now a local history Museum. The Martello Tower was built in 1808, but Seaford had a long line of gun batteries and other defences built both before and after it.

Seaford’s premier videographer, and director of many films showcasing jubilees, anniversaries, and town events such as Armed Forces Day, Sussex Day and Christmas Magic, is Chris Conil. Chris conceived the idea of Crying for my Town, a video project telling the town’s story through the eyes of its series of Town Criers. There is humour, pathos, local colour, and a factual thread to the narrative.

The film looks at the whole gamut of reasons for having a Town Crier, the past and future rôles, and whether Town Criers have a future in this digital age. Whether the Crier

Seaford has had a Town Crier for at least 150 years (from 1865) and the current Crier, Peter White, is approaching 40 years in the post.

A former teacher of history in schools and adult education, Peter has been a Town Crier since 1973. He has been a member of Seaford Museum since 1973 and he was the Museum’s Chairman for a year after it moved into the Martello Tower. He began History Walks around the Town in the 1980s, a rôle now skilfully undertaken by Kevin Gordon.

Peter White produced a narrator’s script, and with the input of local experts Chris brought the whole concept together: directing, filming, and editing the inputs and music to produce a polished film lasting 23 minutes. For his historical narrative Peter relies on books, pamphlets and interviews. Among those involved were Joan Astell, Pat Berry, John Farrant, John Odam, local historian Kevin Gordon, Des Abbott and Betty Abbott of the iconic Coastguard Cottages at Exceat, and lifeguard, Peter Gwilliam.

Chris Conil, trained as a Master Baker at the National Bakery School, London. His father, Jean Conil, acclaimed cookery writer, always encouraged him to pursue his creative talents, which included music and acting. After many years running his own business he eventually semi retired to Eastbourne to run a small hotel with his wife Suzanne, finally moving to Seaford to continue his passion, making movies.

Chris has produced many artistic, cultural and fly-onthe-wall videos, most available on You Tube, some even winning awards. His aim is to create interesting and community based productions that highlight this beautiful landscape.

Rotary Club of Seaford Christmas Collections

Santa Claus and his helpers were out in Seaford during December knocking on doors. They collected in packs on 17 week nights (some horribly wet) and on 4 static collections in Broad Street (again some wet).

The crowds, both young and old came out to see them; to give contributions; have their photographs taken; and to receive sweets from Santa. It was joyous to see the expressions on the children’s faces as they talked to, and received their sweets from, Santa. Indeed so many sweets were devoured that Santa had to send home for more supplies!

Thanks to the generosity of the people of Seaford, the collection this year raised a record amount of £9,910 plus a cheque donation of a further £200. After expenses for running the event including licences, sweets, fuel etc, this money will be deposited in our Charitable Trust for future disbursement to worthy causes in Seaford.

The Rotary Club would like to thank all the people involved with organising, collecting, and counting this magnificent amount. In addition grateful thanks are due to the District Scouts for allowing us to run the collections from their garage in Chichester Road. But above all thank you seaford for your generosity.

The Club is still looking for a plot of land on which to build a garage, or to buy a garage, with a nine foot high opening in order to house Santa’s sleigh during the coming years. If you know of anything suitable, please contact Elf Jim on 01323 492846.

Police Meet Santa

There we were on Wednesday standing by the sleigh with Santa while Chief Elf explained to all the other elves where we were going next when a police car drew up.

We looked at each other. What had we done wrong?

Chief Elf was aghast, Santa had a strange look in his eye.

(Well we think that was what it was, but difficult to say with beard and all). Three Officers got out of the squad car and advanced slowly. We looked at each other again...

“Can we have a photo with Santa?” said one.

“Well of course!” replied Chief Elf while Father Christmas made room on his sleigh. Then we waved as our police resumed their patrol.

Mary’s Meals Backpack Project

Local children once again have excelled in their kindness and generosity. As a result surprises are coming for some 110 children when a consignment of colourful and fun filled backpacks arrive at their schools in faraway places.

For the second time, pupils from Annecy RC Primary School and parishioners from St. Thomas Mores Church, Seaford, have spent the last few weeks collecting, sorting and packing the bags for those children less fortunate than themselves. Each backpack contains basic requirements to enable the children to carry out their learning more effectively. Included in the bags also are basic toiletries, PE kit and flip flops or sandals for their personal use.

These bags are distributed to those children who attend school where they are provided with a meal as part of the Mary’s Meal School Feeding Programme. It costs just £12.40p to feed a child for a year in school.

Mary’s Meals currently feed over 1 million children daily.

It is especially nice to be able to support this project at Christmas time knowing that the personal backpacks the children receive will play a major part in their education and help secure them a better future.

Young Artists Competition

The Club has recently launched its latest competition for our younger citizens. The competition to find the Seaford Young Artist of the Year is the third competition being run by the Rotary Club for young people in our town. There are categories for ages under seven, seven to ten, eleven to thirteen, and fourteen to eighteen on 1st January 2016.

Entrants are required to produce a painting, drawing, or collage with the title “Life Around Us” unframed and not larger than A4 size. Full details and Entry Forms are available on the Club website www.seafordrotary.org.uk or from Rotarian Jim Anderson on 492846.

Seaford U3A’s Christmas Celebration Seaford U3A celebrated Christmas on December 14th with a concert of carols, readings and musical offerings which was organised by Christine Cooke, Jean Colebourne and Michael Reynell, followed by seasonal refreshments. A retiring collection raised over £122 for the Seahaven Storehouse.

We have many talented people in our ranks. Michael Reynell played the organ to accompany the carols which the audience joined in with, apart from a solo performance by Ann Harvey who sang the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City. Our recorder group, which was led by Jean

Colebourne played some beautiful pieces including a Gavotte by William Boyce and Jingle Bells to really bring us into the festive season.

Six members of the Seaford Hand Bell Ringers (whose group was founded and is led by Jo Twigg) really brought Christmas sounds to life with pieces which included Leopald Mozart’s Sleigh Bells and the popular carol Silent Night. Our popular guitar group, Four Shades of Blonde didn’t disappoint as the audience joined in with It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and the ever popular Winter Wonderland.

Readings were given by Anne English who took us back to Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie when we were treated to Carol Singing featuring some very naughty little boys!

This was followed by a tale of another naughty little boy who met with a bad end as Geoffrey Jury read Ogden Nash’s The Ballad of Jabez Daws complete with audience participation!

A John Betjaman poem about Christmas was read by Mary Young, which took many members back to a time long past, and Heather Howell brought the readings to a close with the verses from St. Luke telling of the beginning of the Christmas Story. The final carol, Hark the Herald Angels Sing was sung very enthusiastically by the audience and they then went out to the foyer where warm spicy fruit punch made by Betty Adams, and a selection of mince pies awaited them.

Our audience was very generous in giving over £122 in the retiring collection to Seaford U3A’s chosen charity, Seahaven Storehouse.

All in all it was a very successful day!

Running Commentary...

For those Seaford Scene readers who have done the Beachy Head Marathon and enjoyed the challenge, they should perhaps consider tackling the Steyning Stinger Marathon which takes place in early March. In my experience it is a shade tougher than the BHM, adding maybe 30 minutes to your likely finishing time.

It is almost entirely off-road, brilliantly organised, has superb views, and will stretch your physical and mental staying power to the limit. Value for money as far as the entry fee is concerned is second to none, and there’s more than enough mud around the route for everyone too. Camaraderie among runners is always present in marathons, yet it sometimes seems to increase with the degree of difficulty of the course, which is probably why this event has been on the runners’ calendar for so many years.

As a consequence of a leg injury (unrelated to running) I have decided to ‘hang up my trainers. Therefore this will be my last Running Commentary because I think it would be wrong to continue writing about a sport that I no longer participate in. Although I am endeavouring to maintain my aerobic fitness by walking and cycling, there is nothing to compare with the thrill of running. That feel-good factor has been there in every run I have ever done, whether it was a training run or a race, whatever the distance and regardless of the speed I was running.

Although I will continue to support my colleagues at the Seaford Striders, I will miss the physical involvement or running.

Of all the races that I have done, and that must be close to a thousand, there are some that stand out as particular favourites, ones that are as vivid now as when I first ran them, and in a way, they reflect the reasons why I have enjoyed running so much. They include the Dublin Marathon which nearly became a DNF when a sudden severe muscle strain brought me to a standstill after barely 400 yards. It was only my stubbornness that enabled me to jog the last 26 miles! I include in my list the London Marathon, an event that everyone should do, for the sheer spectacle of running over Tower Bridge, past so many other iconic views and, of course, for the noise that a million spectators make cheering you on. The abiding memory of running the Neolithic Marathon which began in Avebury in Wiltshire, was of crossing the finishing line in the shadow of Stonehenge. The Beachy Head Marathon and the Steyning Stinger are obviously in my list of top events, as is the New Forest Marathon, whose route took me round the area where I lived as a child.

The Eden Project Marathon is also on my list because of the stunning and beautiful landscape that participants are treated to… and the pint of beer and Cornish pasty that you are given at the finish. Top of my list is the Tresco (Isles of Scilly) Marathon. Only those who have been to Tresco would understand why it is my number 1 marathon. To describe it would take another page of this magazine. In addition to those marathons I would have to include the Charlwood (near Gatwick) 10-mile race simply because I recorded a time of 55mins10secs, possibly my fastest piece of running. The Tough Guy would also be on my list as the most awesome and evil cross country race ever!

And I couldn’t leave out the South Downs Way 80-mile race, The London to Brighton 55 mile event and the Grand Union Canal 145-mile Challenge.

Each of these races could have warranted a page to explain my choice and to encourage others to try them.

However the common factor in my list of races can be summed up by the short sentence – Enjoy the journey as well as the arrival.

STRESS LESS

Stress is a factor in most of our lives and we all cope with it in different ways. Depending on the cause of our stress, we can usually sort out the situation and move on. However, if we have a lot of stress piling up or a major issue to deal with, stress can build up and affect both our mental and physical wellbeing.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is a response to any kind of pressure. The greater the pressure, the greater the stress. It has evolved from a form of survival; the ‘fight or flight’ response to get ourselves out of danger.

Our body prepares itself to either run away or stay and fight. This survival technique stopped us from being eaten up by a dinosaur. Our modern day dinosaurs come in different forms: worry about job, money, relationships and sometimes having to juggle all of these things together brings a new type of threat. When the ‘to do’ list gets bigger and bigger the increasing pressure builds our stress levels.

Stress is a major cause of many of our modern day health problems. We are faced with many psychological threats: money, relationships, job… the list can go on. The physical aspects of everyday life such as bad traffic, family illness or increased workload and interference to our routine can also increase our stress levels.

Stress can cause a variety of health problems from headache, migraine and insomnia to more serious illness

such as hypertension, heart attack or stroke and chronic pain. At The House we see the negative mental results of stress: anxiety, depression and a lack of intimacy in relationships. These conditions are not only affecting adults, we also see a worrying number of young people at The House suffering from the results of stress.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

It’s stressful just thinking about how stress can impact our lives. All is not lost! There are things we can do to prevent stress taking hold. Firstly, it’s the old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’. Take better care of yourself. Take some form of exercise every day. This doesn’t have to be pounding the treadmill at the gym. Go for a walk – being outside is great for your mental wellbeing. Most importantly, do something you enjoy. Exercise enables you to breathe more efficiently, gets your body’s defences working and helps to keep your stress levels down. A healthy eating regime dotted with a little of what you fancy every now and again, is also important for your mental wellbeing. Eating should be a joy, giving both pleasure and nourishment.

It is so easy to fill the diary with medical appointments, kids’ activities and work commitments and forget to fit in the fun stuff. Schedule in things to look forward to. Don’t put the recreational activities at the bottom of the list.

Sometimes we need time by ourselves to reflect and to prioritise what’s really important. When life feels too much, take time out to be still and recalibrate. A technique I use to help with anxiety is ‘7/11 breathing’.

Count to seven as you breathe in and count up to eleven as you breathe out. Think of the breath going right down into the pit of your stomach. Taking extra time with each breath will slow your mind aand draw you away from other distractions.

Talk through issues as they arise rather than letting concerns build up in your mind. If you’re feeling lonely get support by seeking out community activities. (There is a list of What’s On in Seaford Scene every month).

If you feel your stress levels are too overwhelming to deal with yourself consult a professional therapist. Counselling and psychotherapy can help you to change your negative thought patterns and help you to cope differently when faced with stressful situations. Remember, you can’t always change what’s going on in your life, but you can change how you react to it.

Cycle Seahaven Thinking of dusting off an old set of wheels or beginning a new hobby? We may be the right place for you to start. Cycle Seahaven is a locally based cycling club with a growing membership of all ages. The inaugural meeting of Cycle Seahaven was held in 2009 at The Wellington, Seaford, when some 35 enthusiastic people turned up, a committee was formed and off we went!

Our aim then was simply to get people onto their bikes and it still is. We are an inclusive club, seeking to encourage people of all ages, abilities and cycling interests to do more cycling and share the enjoyment of cycling with other people living in the Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford area.

Club structure and membership

Cycle Seahaven’s committee is made up of local cycling enthusiasts. The Committee members are voted in by the members at our AGM, usually held by February, and they all work hard to cater for members’ interests. The Committee really welcomes any feedback, ideas and suggestions about any aspects of the Club. If you fancy doing a particular ride then contact us with your ideas – we’re keen to expand our knowledge of local routes for all abilities.

Rides

Cycle Seahaven organises rides for mountain bike riders and road riders of many levels of fitness and experience.

We have devised a grading system to enable members to determine if a particular ride is for them.

At Level 1 there could be a steady ride along the Ouse valley path while at Level 4 there could be a challenging 50 miles on road or two-hour off-road ride across the Downs. We have ride leaders of varied cycling interest and experience who publicise rides on our online rides calendar, as many as 10 rides a week at peak times. The rides are great fun with various refreshment stops included e.g. cake and coffee or pub!

The Rides Calendar on our website is regularly updated with details such as the ride leader’s name, grade of ride, the meeting time/ place, and a brief description of the route. The rides are listed as a summary, but you can click on each one to see more detail. There is also a Rides Hotline so you can telephone to find out if there are any last minute cancellations caused by bad weather.

Campaigns

Cycle Seahaven actively campaigns to bring about improvements to access and facilities for cyclists in the Seahaven area. We have established excellent links to many organisations including: Forestry Commission; South Downs National Park Authority; Sustrans; National Trust; Cycle Touring Club; East Sussex County Council, Lewes District Council and Seaford Town Council; local Police; parish councils and other cycling groups in East Sussex. We like to think we have influenced many recent innovations such as cycling along Seaford prom, The Egrets’ Way and the cycle track avoiding Exceat Hill.

Membership

Riders of all abilities are catered for and no one gets left behind! You can join via the website http://cycleseahaven.org.uk/ or pop into Mr Cycles, Seaford. Membership is £5 a year, this runs from April to march, which is amazing value!

Seaford Striders Looking for New Members The three-mile run from the Martello Tower to the Sailing Club and back has been Seaford Striders tradition for nearly 30 years and is always well attended.

This year, braving windy conditions, but enjoying a brief respite from the rain, both adult and junior members welcomed in the New Year with a seafront run, which helped shake off some of the excesses of the festive season.

The Seaford Striders have always welcomed new members of all ages and abilities. The club has a thriving junior section, which meets each Wednesday at the Salts Car Park, Richmond Road at 5.55pm until 6.45pm. The Senior Club has a wide range of ages and abilities, from teenagers to runners in their late sixties, proving that age need not be a barrier to keeping fit and healthy.

The senior club meets at the Downs Leisure Centre

on Mondays (except 1st Monday of month) and Wednesdays at 7pm. On 1st Monday of the month the Striders meet at the Lewes Running Track 7.30 – 8.30pm.

The annual membership costs just £16 for an adult with a reduced rate of £8 for unemployed, retired members and juniors. Each evening contains a structured training session, whilst still catering for mixed abilities.

Whether you are a dedicated runner or someone just starting on the road to greater fitness you will receive a warm welcome.

Five races in five weeks - Marathon man in quintuple bid A quest to complete five marathons in as many weekends has begun for Jason Martin.

The Seaford man has set out to tackle the Milan, Rome, Brighton, London and Milton Keynes races starting from 3rd April and ending on 2nd May. Jason, who has previously run nine marathons said “Over the last few years I have just run to keep myself fit but recently cancer has affected many of my friends and family so enough is enough – it’s time to put the effort in for a good cause to help get rid of this terrible disease. So this year I have set myself this daunting challenge to try and raise £5,000 for Cancer Research UK.” Cancer Research is the the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They have saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, and survival has doubled over the past 40 years.

Exploring Seaford in Victorian style

The Victorians are famous for their exploration and discoveries. Not only did they go to remote parts of the world, they also had a closer look at different parts of Britain for the first time. At the turn of the century, Arthur Rowe and Charles Sherborn made a special field trip to our local cliffs and mapped Seaford Head in considerable detail for the first time. Arthur was a Margate doctor and writer and Charles a smart dresser in his Norfolk jacket (photo). They made this trip because they realised that the layers of White Chalk in Sussex continued in Kent, France and beyond, despite enormous gaps between these different regions. The key was the different fossils in the chalk layers if you looked closer—especially sea urchins. These zonal fossils, as they are still known, could be found conveniently exposed in the cliffs between Seaford Town and Cuckmere Haven, thanks to coastal erosion. The study of the sea urchins became a classic example of evolution in many a student text book.

But this was not just another geological expedition. Like modern travellers, Arthur and Charles expected certain amenities as recounted by their biographers Andy Gale and Ron Cleevely. They were dismayed that their briar pipes kept going out in the “baffling atmospheric conditions” or our familiar coastal wind. They resorted to cigars, but only after a scientific experiment. They tried a number of different suppliers, covered up the labels, eventually agreeing on the best cigar. They then bought 200 per trip. They sensibly found that “leathern gaiters are indispensable” for protection from brambles, but the advice for dealing with startled sheep would have had local boatmen chuckling: “They say that the course which they invariably adopt is to open the legs wide and to allow the sheep to get past in that way”. The advice came from the Isle of Wight.

Nowadays, health and safety considerations would probably dissuade our Victorian explorers from some of their enterprise. You are, nevertheless, left wondering what we are missing—but what they would undoubtedly have found fascinating. Arthur and Charles’ map of Seaford Head (plus some 30,000 chalk fossils) are preserved in the Natural History Museum, London.

Newsletter Winter 2015/16

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2016.

We hope you enjoy reading it and find the information useful and informative.

Your chairman, Mark Brown, on behalf of the committee wishes all our members a very happy and rewarding New Year.

We are looking forward to increasing our membership and strengthening our co-ordinator and deliverers network this year and to our AGM in March. There is still a lot to do to ensure our membership and our residents are kept informed of events and are safe during the coming year.

With this in mind we will continue to inform you all of events as they are reported to the committee by our local and district policing team and the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

May I please remind you that you can report any events of concern to the police on telephone number 101 or if you consider the event is serious on 999.

Please do use this service as it is important to provide our police force with as much information as possible to enable them to react to our concerns. and if possible to apprehend the perpetrators of crime.

We are also launching a project this year to review where all our NWA signs are located and which of them may need replacing. If you know where these signs are located could you please inform me so we can prepare a register. If they are on lamp posts could you please record the post number and street.

I hope that you all had a Happy Christmas and are looking forward to 2016. December in Seaford was a

good month with no house burglaries and very little theft in general. In fact there have been no house burglaries since 11th November when there were a series of burglaries in the Aquilla Park, Wellington Park areas. Though the man responsible for these offences was subsequently arrested and charged, it did show how vulnerable garages are to burglary. If you have a garage that is fixed to your house, especially if is a newer property, you need to make sure that at all times the outside door is securely locked, and even more importantly that any connecting door to the house is fit for purpose and locked at all times, even if the outside door is locked.

Thefts from motor vehicles are also down in no small part due to various operations against a gang that were living in Seaford. However this does not mean we should be complacent, and the advice as always is to never leave any bags or valuables in your car and always secure it even if it is on your drive. It was this time last year when at least 30 vehicles were entered and searched during just one night in Seaford and none of them were locked. You will always be especially vulnerable parking in rural car parks and the lessons from the gang that I have mentioned were that they were watching people park up and seeing where they hid items, so always take bags and valuables with you.

In the last few weeks we have had a few reports of rogue gardeners calling door to door and over charging for work. The rule is never to employ anyone who cold calls in this way and only get work done when you need it by someone who has been recommended and has given a written estimate in advance.

Finally we are still getting reports of computer fraud, usually where the victim is called by someone with a foreign accent claiming to be from Microsoft or an internet service provider. Never deal with these calls

We’ve added to our ‘Scroll of Honour’ There’s an old saying that if you want to test someone’s commitment to a cause see if they will give their time or money towards it.

Seaford is lucky to have a large number of people who volunteer to give their time freely to the dozens of community clubs and groups within the town. We’ve talked about this before and it remains a big part of why Seaford is a special place.

We like to think we show our genuine commitment to the community by putting our hand into our pockets and supporting whenever we can.

We will always try to help local causes whether that’s by making a donation, selling tickets from our office in Church Street or helping to promote events in our window.

Alongside our environmental beliefs, supporting the community is something we are all really enthusiastic about.

We were talking about this subject in the office recently and made a list of all the clubs, groups and causes we are proud to be involved with.

The sheet of paper we made our list was light heartedly christened our ‘scroll of honour.’ It currently features: Seaford Striders, the Crouch Bowling Club, Premier United football, Seaford Choral Society, Blatchington Pond and Seaford Music Society.

CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS – REVIEW 12th DECEMBER Concentus gave the packed audience in St Leonard’s Church a splendid, well received concert with a full, varied programme which proved to be an exhilarating, joyous, moving and, in part, humorous, start to the Christmas festivities – an audience member who hadn’t heard Concentus before said that they knew they would enjoy the music, but hadn’t expected to have so much fun!

Adrian White, Musical Director, had arranged a programme which catered for many musical tastes, moving from a beautifully delivered Ave Verum Corpus, (Mozart), which one audience member said moved him to tears, through a very special Teddy Bears’ Picnic, (J. Bratton), via a joyous Feliz Navidad, (J. Feliciane), to culminate in a well controlled and balanced offering of For unto us a Child is born from Mozart’s Messiah.

Look at the World, (Rutter), opened the concert and Adrian told the audience that this concert marked the 10th anniversary of the first concert Concentus had ever given, and this work had opened that first concert.

Pieces for the choir, for choir plus soloists, for various sized groups, for a soloist, and a duet made up the programme, with John Ross skillfully accompanying on piano and organ.

The full choir, with evident enjoyment and with their expected professionalism, sang a number of works.

Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem was sung with fluidity and expression; Mary had a Baby, (M. Sargent), was joyous and full of wonder in turns; the humorous Twelve Days After Christmas, (F. Silver), had the audience laughing and applauding, and The Teddy Bears Picnic riveted them as they heard the many moods the choir painted for them.

The in-house soloists delighted the audience. Amongst others, Sue Barnes sang O Holy Night, (A. Adams), with great beauty and delicacy. Maralyn Streeter gave us the solo of Mozart’s Laudate Dominum with fine control and clarity. Steph O’Grady sang the solo part of The 3 Kings, (P. Cornelius), in a new-to-many setting of the carol, creating an atmosphere of mystery and reverence.

The audience enjoyed the talented and humorous offerings from the group ensembles, which included a lovely rendering of the Sans Day Carol, (D. Willcock), and a very funny I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, (J. Rox). Musical Director Adrian White showed us his vocal talents by singing with several of the groups, and in An Extremely Famous Christmas Song, where, with David Horne and Louise Soper, we were given a very amusing version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, (J. Marks).

These were just some of the goodies on offer, in what proved to be an excellent and well-balanced concert.

Audience members made comments such as ‘the variety of music was amazing’, ‘the range of voices was impressive’, and ‘the sound was clear, with all parts easily heard’. At the end, they showed their appreciation with vigor, and departed with Unto us a Child is Born ringing in their ears, and with a lightness to their footsteps.

A retiring collection was taken for the local charity, the JPK Project, which Concentus has supported since the choir started. The aim of the charity is to provide a Supported Living Centre for local learning disabled young adults. They raised £308.84 at this concert, bringing the total raised so far for JPK to £22,972.72.

Concentus has had a very busy Christmas season, singing in 8 different venues. You may have seen them on local television at the dedication of Eastbourne’s pier, carol-singing in the Arndale Centre, or at our own Seaford Magic event.

The Peace Garden Restored After two bouts of vandalism, Seaford Peace Garden has finally been restored to its position in the town as a place of beauty and serenity.

The garden, which was opened by Sheila Hancock in July 2011, after three years of fundraising and development, provides a space for quiet reflection amid the business of modern life.

The Peace Garden was designed by Lindsay Thomas and contains a sculpture by Christian Funnell (whose work can be seen in Newhaven, Birling Gap and throughout the country) stone carvings by

Jo Sweeting, a Brighton based stone carver, and a world recognized Peace pole with the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth� in English, Arabic, Japanese and Spanish.

The garden was provided by Seaford Quakers, with both local and national funding, and is maintained by Seaford Town Council. The garden is well used and is appreciated by residents and visitors to Seaford who welcome the peace garden as a quiet place to sit alone or with friends, reading, eating their lunch or in contemplation.

We hope that the garden is left in peace now but if anyone should see any more vandalism please let the police or the council know.

These pure golden yellow flowers are native European woodland plants and can produce a bright display along with snowdrops in February to March. They like shaded areas and when planted in large numbers under shrubs and deciduous trees will give a carpet of colour and efficient ground cover, growing to a height of only 13cm. Aconites can be bought as tubers in the autumn, but are better acquired when in the green (in leaf) during or just after flowering and will establish themselves more easily.

They are happy growing in a well drained light acidic or alkaline soil. Seeds are also available to sow in March to June.

There are some seeds that can be planted this month in a greenhouse as they don’t mind the cold weather and will germinate in around 10ºC. Vegetable seeds such as onions or peas, and flowers such as sweet peas, begonia or cosmos sown now will grow up to a good size ready to plant out in April or May. ebruary is the month when the garden can start to wake up, bulbs appear above the surface and buds are ready to burst into leaf as soon as the warmer weather arrives. Lighter evenings are coming, the weather can still be cold and there may even be snow and frost, but even so some of the plans made in January can be put into action. At the Society’s meeting in January we were entertained with a photographic presentation of the past year, part of which featured the Horticultural Show, and the many exhibits that were displayed and prizes won. This month then is the time to start thinking about what to exhibit at this year’s show due to be held on 13th August. It would be great to have more people exhibiting. There are almost 100 different classes to choose from – flowers, fruit, vegetables, crafts and cooking to name a few. It is great fun, and there are small money prizes, cups and shields to compete for so give the show a go. There are classes for children too so the whole family can be involved – showing something that you have grown, made or created yourself gives a real sense of achievement and satisfaction.

3 Check dahlia tubers that have been in store over winter, planting the good ones into potting compost & keeping in the greenhouse till they start to shoot.

3 Turn over the compost heap with a fork to aerate it & add some water if it seems dry.

3 Its not too late to feed the veg patch – spread over or dig in some compost – this will give the soil a boost ready for planting in the next few weeks.

3 Check new summer raspberry canes are all tied in. They can also be trimmed down slightly if they have got too tall for their supports.

Seaford Gardening Club I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year.

What dreadful weather we have experienced, but luckily not as bad as some areas. I wonder what 2016 holds for us all?

There was no talk in December as the club held a Christmas dinner on the 9th. As usual, the meal was delicious and the atmosphere very welcoming by Jane and Martin at the Avondale Hotel. Twenty-four members and guests attended, with everyone having a go at the quiz and some taking home lovely raffle prizes.

A good evening was had by all.

Our next talk is on Wednesday 24th February and will be held at 7.30pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (using the door opposite Tesco). Our speaker will be David Fitton, advising us which plants to use for the patio and containers.

Visitors are very welcome for a fee of £2, or you can join for £10. There are no extra charges and refreshments are available. morning. We’ve had some lovely carrots on sale and the leeks have fattened up nicely.

What smells of peanuts, has deep-red panicles and puts on an enormous growth spurt in favourable conditions?

Well, some of us didn’t know either, but committee member Katie was really excited to see how well our Melianthus major is doing, explaining that it comes from South Africa and is much frequented by sunbirds. Sunbirds? Not much chance of sun let alone birds on that particular day. There we were, sheltering from the precursor to storm Frank in that jaded time between Christmas and New Year when all you want to do is get back to normal again, when, over a recuperative coffee and Jim’s lovely homemade ginger biscuits, we got to pondering why some plants were flowering unseasonably early while others were sensibly biding their time. Ah, says Katie, who knows about these things, it’s because some plants are temperature sensitive while others respond to hours of daylight. So we concluded that hellebores, rosemary and the evergreen Clematis Winter Beauty, which was about to burst into its lovely white flowers, were revelling in the mild temperatures and heavy rainfall while other plants needed to wait until the sun advances further over the yard arm. Hmm, we know the feeling. Nevertheless, the aforementioned Melianthus, which had put on 6ft of growth since being planted last spring, along with an acacia which promises highly scented pompoms, and our tree echiums are flourishing in the exotic area in the bed opposite the entrance gate to our walled plot behind the Peace Garden in the Crouch.

But back in the classroom we all admitted to feeling a bit bah humbug as we munched our way through the last mince pies – well it would have been a pity to waste them – admired a Christmas table decoration left over from our party and vowed we would make some to sell for next year. Thank you to the Pop Ups who entertained at the party with Christmas songs and carols, and for John’s impromptu daft dancing, and to all those who made delicious and very warming soup. Now pass that box of choccies someone… and own up now, who’s eaten all the purple ones?

Seaford Garden Trails 2016 This summer, two established garden trails celebrate their 5th anniversaries in Seaford! On 5th June it’s the 5th Mayor’s Open Garden Trail and on the weekend of 9th to 10th July the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail. There are already six gardens scheduled to open in the town on the 5th June and 7 over the weekend of the Macmillan Trail. Seaford Afternoon Muddy Paws & Flower Club Happy Claws

The Club does not meet in January and our delightful afternoon’s entertainment on 17th December on the theme of Seasonal Music played on unusual instruments

by Joy and Derrick, seems a long way away.

This month on Thursday 18th February we have a members’ afternoon in-house imposed workshop. Members are all given the same flowers, equipment and design, which they then attempt to create in their own style.

The results are always interesting and varied and everyone enjoys the friendly atmosphere. Even if you are not a member why not come along and chat, offer suggestions and see the results.

Our meeting on 17th March is our AGM and presentation afternoon. This will be followed by a demonstration and tuition on leaf manipulation. Nonmembers are welcome to come along. Chinese New Year Chinese New Year has been celebrated for thousands of years. No one knows exactly when the tradition first started, but it is believed to date from at least the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC – 1122 BC), although it may be much older.

The Chinese calendar is much older than the Gregorian one we use today, although it has evolved over time.

It follows the lunar cycle, with each month beginning with the new moon. Chinese New Year falls between 21st January and 20th February on the Gregorian calendar. This year it will be celebrated on 8th February.

Celebrations run from Chinese New Year’s Eve, to the Lantern Festival 15 days later. It is the Year of the Monkey, one of twelve animals associated with Chinese New Year. The others are rooster, dog, pig, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse and sheep.

The colour red is often associated with Chinese New Year. In Chinese folk lore there was once a beast called the Nian who roamed the land at the beginning of each year, terrorising villagers. Red was found to drive the Nian away, so red clothes were worn, and red lanterns

and scrolls were hung.

The tale goes that the Nian was eventually captured by a monk, but people have continued the traditions.

Red packets containing money are also often given to younger people by married couples, to bring luck.

Food plays an important role in Chinese New Year. New Year’s Eve dinner is a day for families to gather together to celebrate at home. The type of food served depends on the country and region. Some of the most common food traditionally eaten on or around Chinese New Year includes dumplings, fish and spring rolls. Many of the ingredients are chosen because their name is considered auspicious. For example, there is a vegetarian dish called Buddha’s Delight which is often eaten at this time of year. Fat choy is usually included in the dish, due to the last syllables of its name sounding similar to a Cantonese phrase for prosperity. The preparation and way of eating the dishes is also considered very important.

Restaurants across the UK will often hang up decorations for Chinese New year and hold their own celebrations, including special menus and entertainment.

Many cities also host Chinese New Year celebrations and activities, from lantern making and martial arts demonstrations to parades and firework displays.

The Chinese dragon has become an iconic part of Chinese New Year. Dragons are said to ward off evil, and bring prosperity and good luck. The dragon dance is performed by a group of dancers carrying a giant, moveable dragon. It is believed that the longer the dragon, the more good luck it can bestow, so some can reach over 70 metres! There are certain characters and stories that we have all grown up with. We know that it isn’t a good idea to build a house out of straw or sticks. Apples given to us by strange old women might not be good for us.

And planting some magic beans in your back garden is certainly not the smartest thing you could do unless you want to be attacked by giants! But they are just old stories, right?

Well, what if they weren’t?

In this first novel in the Sisters Grimm series (aimed at children around the age of 10), we meet Sabrina and Daphne Grimm. They live in New York and have in the past year been placed with one foster family after another following the mysterious disappearance of their parents. The girls have become experts at running away from each home as they find themselves treated badly.

Suddenly, out of the blue, their grandmother appears and offers them a home: shocking as the girls had been told that she had died. The authorities don’t seem too concerned by this – they are simply happy to get rid of Sabrina and Daphne – and so they are delivered a small town called Ferryport Landings and to the welcoming arms of Granny Relda.

But Ferryport Landings is no ordinary town, as the girls will soon discover. After all, how many schools have Snow White as a teacher? Here live the Everafters: characters from fairy-tales who are doomed to remain there for ever due to a curse. A curse that Sabrina and Daphne find themselves at the heart of.

It soon becomes clear that Granny Relda is no ordinary Granny and the fact that she is still alive is just one secret that has been kept from the Sisters Grimm.

Apprenticeship opportunities Young people on the search for the perfect job can find out if an apprenticeship with East Sussex County Council is for them.

Following the success of the last work readiness programme session, the local authority is inviting up to 25 young people aged 16 and over a place on the next event, which runs from February 8 to 12. Participants will be prepared for life at work and given advice to help them decide if an apprenticeship is the best route to take.

Romalie Ford, who attended the session in October last year, said: “The event was really useful because many of us had never even worked before. It provided us with the information that we needed about work and becoming an apprentice, and this helped us to get in the right mind-set to start work.”

Eastenders Star Supports SEaford Moo-sical!

Seaford Moo-sical Theatre members Paula Woolven and Caley Foster were delighted to meet Eastenders star, Steve McFadden, at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley when they collected the cow, Pat, for their Pantomime in January Pat (previously known as Daisy) was tipped to be the star of the show at the Barn Theatre, Seaford, in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ that ran from 15th-17th and 22nd-24th January 2015. Pat was joined on stage by the winner of the Dean Factor 2015, Gemma Albrow, as Princess Jasmine and top cabaret singer Jack West, as Jack Twinkle.

The 17 year old was one of 21 young people who signed up for the week-long work-readiness course, which included advice on interview skills and CV writing, and an introduction to working in local government by East Sussex County Council chief executive Becky Shaw.

The week ended with two work experience days with different council departments. Following interviews, 14 apprentices were hired to become business administration apprentices at the county council.

Romalie, who was successful in the interview process and began work in November, said: “Everyone has been really friendly and welcoming, and I am thrilled to now be an apprentice at East Sussex County Council. My apprenticeship is going to open up opportunities I may never have had, and ensure I have the skills to build a promising career in the future.”

Each apprentice has been assigned a mentor to help them in the workplace, and all 14 apprentices will meet regularly and support each other while studying towards their qualifications.

Cllr David Elkin, East Sussex County Council lead member for resources, said: “Having been fortunate on leaving school to become an apprentice I can really recommend it. I’ve always said that I started my education the day I left school and became an apprentice. It’s the best thing I ever did.

“Apprenticeships offer an opportunity for young people to get relevant, on-the-job experience and get their foot on the first rung of the career ladder, and the workreadiness programme is a great way for them to find out if apprenticeships are right for them.”

The scheme supports the East Sussex employability and skills strategy, launched in 2014 in a bid to ensure the county’s workforce has the skills businesses need.

The county council will be recruiting more apprentices in 2016 and are looking for young people who want to pursue a career in Health and Social Care or Business Administration.

Seaford Inner Wheel

Local Window Cleaner

We had expected the Christmas month of December to be very quiet in terms of fund raising. How wrong could we be? We have two little china pigs into which loose change (shrapnel) is posted at every meeting.

These two pigs mount up little by little for Sightsavers and Water Aid. However, both charities told us that the Government would double their fund-raising – what could we do, but arrange for our November and December meetings to be dedicated to each charity.

Sightsavers benefited by receiving £285 and Water Aid by just over £100.

Also Inner Wheel District in Cumbria and Lancashire wrote to every club in the UK asking for emergency funds to help people who had been flooded out. We turned our Christmas coffee morning into an appeal to members and accumulated £200, which was sent off immediately.

Also at our December meeting Eileen had the pleasure of inducting two new members, Babette Garman and Marilyn Ross (photgraphed).

On 9th January 2016 our first event of the year is the marking of Inner Wheel Day worldwide and our input this year will be a Bangers and Mash lunch at St Leonards Church Hall.

six Ways to stay mentally healthy and ward off dementia

By Nial Joyce, Clifden House Dementia Care Centre

Take action now and you can significantly reduce your chances of developing dementia.

In East Sussex alone there are a staggering 13,000 people with dementia. On a national basis one in six people over the age of 80 has dementia, and the proportion of people with the disease doubles for every five-year age group.

These are quite alarming figures, but what was previously thought of as an inevitable part of ageing is now becoming much better understood. Thanks to research and scientific study we now know that there are several ways to prevent or at least delay the on-set of dementia. Making core healthy lifestyle choices, especially in mid-life, can significantly reduce your risk later on. If you introduce as many of these things as you can now, you’ll reap the rewards in your golden years.

Exercise This is the big one. Regular physical exercise, for example cycling, swimming or brisk walking, can lower your risk of dementia by 30 per cent and Alzheimer’s disease by a whopping 45 per cent. Of all the lifestyle changes that have been studied, taking regular exercise appears to be one of the best things that you can do to reduce your risk of getting dementia. The NHS advise that adults aged between 19 – 64 should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week, and strength exercises on two or more days a week.

Aerobic exercise is particularly beneficial. In a modestsized controlled trial* of healthy older people, one year of aerobic exercise resulted in a small increase in the size of the hippocampus (the brain area involved in memory) equivalent to reversing one to two years’ of age-related shrinkage.

Diet A balanced diet may not only help to reduce the risk of dementia, but it’s good for you in so many other ways too, not least in helping to maintain a healthy weight. Cut down on saturated fat, salt, dairy and meat, and include plenty of fish, fresh fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget to reduce your alcohol intake, too.

Work your brain People who keep their brains active

reading, writing and playing games appear to have reduced levels of beta-amyloid. The presence of this protein is a major hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. The Times crossword, anyone?

Vitamin D Our skin isn’t able to make vitamin D from the winter sun in the UK (November to March) as the sunlight hasn’t got enough ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in it. Even in the sunny months we know it can be a challenge in this country. The solution? Get out in the sun as much as you can (follow sunscreen guidelines for your skin type); consider taking a multi-vitamin supplement and up your intake of oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon. Some fat spreads and cereals are also fortified with vitamin D. Don’t stress Stress is hugely detrimental to good health and several studies have pointed to a link between dementia and stress, although little is known about why this is. The best solution? Whenever you feel the panic rising, take some deep breaths and count to 10. Kick the caffeine habit, and try yoga, meditation and mindfulness, all of which help to re-focus the mind towards a calmer state.

Stay social Keeping socially and mentally active into mid and later life may help protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. If you can combine social, physical and mental activity that’s even better! Visit friends, volunteer at a local charity, join a walking or running group or even a pub quiz team – it all counts! The message? Keep active, eat well, soak up the sun, challenge yourself, make time for friends and stay cool as a cucumber. All of these things could help protect you against developing dementia in later life, and they will also reduce your risk factors for many other serious conditions such as stroke, heart disease and cancer.

It’s worth remembering that none of these measures are foolproof. Unfortunately the risks of developing the disease simply increase with age, and similar to a non-smoker who develops lung cancer, there is often no particular reason for the disease’s onset. However by taking note of the points above you can try to minimise your risks. And remember, from experience of working in the dementia care sector for many years, life certainly doesn’t stop with a diagnosis.

Seafordbased video maker and musician Chris Conil has won the 2015 East Sussex MovieMakers’ award for short video for his documentary called Quill. I. Am. It explores the beauties of Seaford Head and its cliffs and beaches from the viewpoint of local calligrapher and artist Sally-Mae Joseph whose lettering was inspired by the scenery and forms she finds on the foreshore.

Sally-Mae recently had a successful exhibition at the Christmas Hangover show at arts@thecrypt and started the Pop Ups singing group for which Chris composed and wrote the lyrics of a carol called Listen to the Bells.

Quill. I. Am and the carol are both available on You Tube.

Sally-Mae is a calligrapher, illuminator and lettering artist who has always had a love of making marks that later became expressed as lettering and has lectured internationally. Chris is making a series of videos about the people who make Seaford tick and has recently completed one about the Town Crier, Peter White, and another following the events of 2015’s Christmas Magic day, also on You Tube.

Maria Caulfield was welcomed by the club president, Jeff Winder, and she spoke about the importance of sport in the community and the value of it to the local people.

Maria then spent over an hour talking to club members and she said the club house was a wonderful facility.

In order to protect the club house in the future new flood defences are being installed this week.

The club now looks forward to a successful season.

The Synergy Theatre The Synergy Theatre continues its 2015/2016 Season with Terence Rattigan’s story of family, truth and justice, The Winslow Boy, once again performing at The Clinton Centre Adapted for the screen in both 1948 and 1999, starring Robert Donat and Jeremy Northam respectively, The Winslow Boy is based on the true story of the young Naval cadet, George Archer Shee, who was accused of stealing a five shilling postal order. Archer Shee protested his innocence and his family engaged a top barrister to take the young boy’s case to court.

In a landmark ruling, the boy was – correctly – found innocent and the matter dropped. However, the effect on the family’s reputation, finances and his father’s health was crushing.

Once again, we will be holding a pre-performance tea on Friday 12th, in the company of the cast, which will begin at 6.30pm. SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY

A Helping Hand For CTLA Seaford Choral Society is proud to be able to help local charitable groups by raising money to donate at their concerts. The retiring collection, taken following the Choral Society’s Autumn Concert in St Leonard’s Church on 28th. November 2015 was collected by and presented to Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA). The capacity audience, members of the choir and guest soloists raised £300 for the CTLA and a cheque was presented to representatives of the organisation at The Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven by the Chairman, Rosemary Collict. Derek Barnett, their General Manager said “On behalf of CTLA I would like to thank the Society for the donation. All funds are put to good use to ensure we can provide the best possible service to our clients, many of whom are the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our community.”

CTLA has been serving local communities since 1995 and is the only Community Transport Charity, of its kind, operating throughout the Lewes District. In our district of Seaford and Bishopstone, a very successful Dial-A-Ride service operates. Their aim is to provide an accessible transport service for almost anyone, especially those who have difficulty using conventional public transport services.

Meeting the needs that public transport leaves unmet, the service realises it is often more about the journey than the destination. CTLA currently undertakes 60,000 passenger journeys each year to help the community including offering accessible transport options to disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the community, who are often at risk of isolation and loneliness.

The Choral society is extremely pleased to assist this worthwhile organisation and we would like to thank all those who gave so generously.

The Best of Bellies

Slow Roast Pork Belly with Fennel, Chilli and Garlic

Coming home from the Butcher’s with a bag of purchases the other day, I told my wife: ‘I’ve got a Pork Belly!’

Serves 4

Ingredients

For the Pork: 1x1.5 kg boneless, unskinned pork belly patted dry with kitchen towel; 2 large onions, halved and thinly sliced.

‘You’ve had one for years,’ she said, scornfully. ‘It’s all the food and drink you put away.’

Fair comment, if a tad cutting.

Pork belly is a cheap and tasty cut, and if cooked properly gives you moist, tender meat that has lost much of the fat. And there’s delicious crackling too. Here’s a recipe by Rick Stein, he who more famously cooks fish. It uses a marinade paste which you can experiment with by using different herbs and spices according to your own taste.

Don’t just rub in salt and pepper.

For the marinade paste: 2 tsp fennel seeds; 1 tbsp black pepper corns; large pinch crushed dried chillies; 2 tsp sea salt, 3 large garlic cloves, crushed; handful rosemary sprigs, leaves removed; 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil.

Method

With a very sharp knife, score the skin deeply, cutting into the layer of fat underneath. Cut a criss-cross pattern across the whole joint. A clean Stanley knife is ideal. Grind the paste ingredients together in a mortar and pestle, or whizz in a blender. Rub the paste into the joint, making sure it goes deep into the skin cuts. Cover and leave overnight in the fridge. Layer the sliced onions in a baking tin and place the pork on top, skin side up. Roast the pork in the oven at 160c for 2 ½ hours, then remove the joint and slice off the layer of crackling. Crank up the oven to 225c and crisp off the crackling in a new tray for 15 minutes while the meat rests under foil. Skim off the fat from the roasting tin and make a nice onion gravy. Serve the pork in thick slices with the crackling and potatoes and veg of your choice.

The Love Heart Community Café To celebrate the second anniversary of The Love Heart Community Café we were honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Seaford who presented certificates of appreciation to David and Ella, the founding members of staff, on 10th December.

When we started In October 2013 with the support of Southdown Housing Association our objective was to provide a Community Café run by all abilities, promoting diversity and equality while encouraging participation and creativity among our staff and their customers. The extent to which this has been achieved is a credit to David and Ella, whose commitment and enthusiasm remains undimmed.

They have been there for every one of our Thursday mornings between 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Clinton Centre, obtaining excellent work experience.

When you visit us they will greet you and take your order from our menu of mid-morning favourites. Your time at the Love Heart Café may be spent relaxing to music, enjoying the company of friends or engaging in the crafts on offer.

Among our plans for the future is a performance on stage at the St Luke’s Centre, Walmer Road, Seaford on Saturday 27th February at 6pm. The characters are loosely drawn from Peter Pan. Although entrance will be free, we will request donations towards our costs. The residue will be passed to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Seaford Tree Wardens

Focus on: Oak Trees

This month we take a look at one of Britain’s most known and loved trees – the mighty oak.

English Oak (Quercus robur) The English Oak is one of the most well known native tree species in the UK, with a distinctive lobed leaf shape, and wide, spreading canopy. Oak trees have a long lifespan, growing quickly when young, but growth slows as they age. The acorns which are a great source of food for wildlife such as squirrels and birds, are not produced by the Oak until it is at least 40 years old.

Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) The Holm Oak is a non-native species of tree, originating from the Eastern Mediterranean – it has been naturalised in the UK. When the leaves are young they have a shape very much like holly leaves, with spikey edges. The Holm Oak is unusual amongst Oak species in Britain as it is an evergreen, whereas most other Oak species in Britain are deciduous, shedding their leaves in Autumn.

Turkey Oak (Quercus cerris) Another non-native, the Turkey Oak was introduced to Britain in the 18th century. Leaf shape varies between pointed and round lobes, and it produces large, hairy cupped acorns. Small mammals and birds will eat these acorns, although they are not thought to be as desirable to them as acorns from native Oak varieties.

Seaford Kurlers Hello Seaford Sceners – I wonder what February will bring us. Please no more rain. This winter has certainly brought lots of misery to parts of Great Britain. But let’s look forward to Spring, which will soon break through and give us all happy faces.

2015 was a rather sad year for Seaford Kurlers. We lost two of our original members early in the year. They were Edna Dudley and Win Day. The year closed with another very sad note. Gerald (Gerry) McInally died on 4th December 2015. He won the Bob Matthews Achievement Cup for 2015. The sad thing is, although I had told him about the award, he died before he got to see it. For a lot of his life he was a professional deep sea diver and Royal Navy frogman. At the end of WW11 Gerry and other divers had to clear the Thames from unexploded underwater bombs from Tilbury Docks to Teddington Lock. Quite a task dressed in frogmens’ outfits.

He was indeed an extremely interesting man to talk to.

His funeral was on 15th December 2015 at Eastbourne.

His ashes will be scattered at sea from Portsmouth via the RNLI. His keepsake cup will be housed in the Seaford

At the time of writing the January issue, we had not had our Christmas lunch at the Moorings, Pevensey. The food was extremely good and we can recommend the restaurant. At the moment we do not have outings or events booked – it’s always a quiet time of the year.

There are no updates on the social funding for ESDA. This is set to be cut by 80% by ESCC due to Government cuts to councils.

At our last kurling meeting for 2015, a team of four players managed to get a rare result (photo above). All eight stones on the target. What a way to end the year – well done! And the score for all those stones: 1 to the blue team...sorry red team!

Basic Pancakes

by Delia Smith Ingredients: 110g/4oz plain flour, pinch salt, 2 eggs, 200ml/7oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water, 50g/2oz butter To serve: Caster sugar,

lemon juice, maple syrup, butter – or anything else you can think of!

Method: Sift flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in

the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Whisk in the eggs, incorporating bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl. Next gradually add small quantities of the milk/water mixture, whisking until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream.

Melt the butter in a pan and spoon 2 tsp of it into the batter and pour the rest into a bowl and use to lubricate the pan using kitchen paper to smear it around before making each pancake.

Get the pan very hot, then turn the heat down to medium. Spoon 2 tbsp of batter into the hot pan – as soon as the batter hits the pan, swirl the mixture until it is evenly spread. After 30 seconds lift the edge of the pancake to see if it’s golden, then flip the pancake over with a palette knife.

To serve, sprinkle with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then half again to form a triangle or simply roll up.

Variations: orange juice, maple syrup, butter or chocolate spread!

Anna Norman completed her 6.4k course, which had been freshly churned up by the men’s race, with a fantastic sprint finish to the line. Her efforts were rewarded with a 41st place. These races feature some of the best runners in the county and the ladies race was won by Grace Baker from Hastings, fresh from her junior team silver performance in the European Cross Country Championships in Hyères, France.

The Language Of Flowers It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and millions will be rushing out to buy or send flowers. Traditionally this will be red roses of course. Others may choose their purchases on the basis of colour, smell or even price but there’s a whole language and meaning to flowers too, which is called Floriography.

Roses

Red Roses, as most will know, symbolise Love and Desire but changing the colour of the flower leads to different connotations. For example, Yellow is for friendship, Pink for perfect happiness and Orange for fascination. There are different meanings for specific types of rose too, such as Tea Roses meaning ‘I’ll remember always’ and Dog Roses connecting to pain and pleasure. Formations also have an impact. Thinking back to the traditional dozen red roses, a bunch of a single bloom, means I love you or I still love you, whilst an assortment of colours represents the sentiment

‘you’re everything to me.’ A dozen red roses has become the norm, because of the significance of the number twelve within nature, philosophy and religion. The number 12 often represents a full cycle, so 12 months of the year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 hours on a clock for instance.

From ancient times, cultures around the world have developed calendars based on cycles of twelve, and there are many mythological and religious connections to the number also. The use of 12 across the natural and spiritual world means that 12 or a dozen, has taken on a universal quality which enhances the significance of a dozen roses. Turning now to other flowers we frequently buy in the UK:

Carnations: Pink carnations mean ‘I’ll never forget you,’ whilst red symbolise admiration and yellow rejection and disappointment, so probably best to avoid those! Lilies: Calla Lilies represent beauty and Tiger Lilies wealth so the latter is perhaps a good choice if you are looking to impress. Tulips: apparently show love and passion too.

Yellow ones which are my daughter’s favourite, mean ‘there’s sunshine in your smile,’ whereas red tulips are a declaration of love and white ones say ‘I’m worthy of you.’

Daffodils: show regard.

Freesias: demonstrate trust.

Of course there are many more wonderful flowers to choose from, so if you really want to be sure of making the right impression, it’s worth asking your florist about their meaning.

Seaford Golf Club – 2015 Seaford Town Salver Presentation The Ladies section of Seaford Golf Club presented the Seaford Town Salver to the 2015 winner, Carol Hall, recently. Ladies Captain, Sue Bradbery, made the presentation to Carol at the club with some members in attendance.

The Seaford Town Salver used to be played at both Blatchington and Seaford Head in alternate years with members from both clubs eligible to play. However, and sad to say, this has lapsed into the host club holding the event purely for their own members.

This is unfortunate as the men’s equivalent, the Seaford Town Cup, maintains the original format and why the ladies’ event has changed whilst the men’s hasn’t is hard to fathom. So the Seaford Golf Club ladies are going to see if the original format can be restored soon through further conversations with Seaford Head Golf Club.
