Welcome...

to the December issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. This month it’s all about Christmas, and why not? After all, it didn’t really happen last year... And so, at the time of writing, it looks like we’re on track for a super Christmas (fingers crossed)! Seaford’s Christmas Magic returns on Saturday 4th December from 11am to 5pm – shop local and see page 4, plus there’s the Pick ’n’ Mix Pattern lantern-making workshop and Children’s Lantern Parade from 4pm, see page 5, followed by the turning on of Seaford’s Christmas lights at 4.45pm. Father Christmas will be doing the evening rounds on his sleigh in the run-up to Christmas, also stopping off in Broad Street on Saturday mornings and Christmas Eve – see page 6 for all his Christmas routes. And if all that wasn’t enough, there are Christmas markets, fairs and exhibitions to enjoy, so you can buy those special Christmas gifts – browse through the pages and see the What’s On listings, 125 to 129. We have music from Splash Point Jazz, Seaford Music Society, Concentus Sings and the Corelli Ensemble, plus Seaford Little Theatre’s latest production. All this and so much more in this issue. Finally I would like to thank everyone who has continued to support Seaford Scene over the last challenging year. Without your support, this community magazine would not exist, so a huge thank you! Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas! Fran Tegg. Editor

FREE CHILDREN’S LANTERN-MAKING WORKSHOP

Saturday 4th December, 10am – 3.30pm The Mercread Youth Centre, Mercread Road, Seaford, BN25 1AB This December SCIP invite you to step in to a delicious world of pure imagination. Collect your candy bag filled with magical sprinkles, and get ready to stick and pattern your lantern and join this year’s Christmas Magic Pick ’n’ Mix Pattern Parade, created and produced by Sussex Contemporary Illus-trators & Printmakers (SCIP) in association with Seaford Town Council. Take your inspiration from retro pick ’n’ mix patterns to Charlie’s Chocolate Factory for the sweetest parade Seaford has ever had!

After getting creative and decorating your lantern you can join the parade. Head to East Street at 4pm to assemble, and Willy Wonka will be waiting to lead you through Seaford Town to the turning on of the Christmas Lights. The lantern-making workshops are free of charge and suitable for children aged 3+. No need to book but numbers are limited as we have designed the workshops to be as Covid-safe as possible. There will also be the opportunity to relax in Beth’s Kitchen & Cakery pop-up café in The Mercread Youth Centre on the day. ‘It’s not easy making a hands-on children’s workshop Covid-safe but we are doing everything we can to ensure that we minimise any risks. We are so excited to be working with Seaford Town Council on this event again. I think we all really missed it during the Lockdown’ says Josie Swan, Creative Director of SCIP. Seaford is Banking on the Climate Hub

Seaford Environmental Alliance (SEA) is a newly formed charity working to raise awareness of the climate and ecological emergency and help people take steps to live more sustainably. On 30th October the Alliance celebrated the opening of their Climate Hub. The hub, located in the old NatWest bank in Clinton Place, represents the culmination of many months of work by SEA. The Team has secured a year-long lease for the building and, in the last couple of weeks, has been joined by volunteers coming forward to help clean the hub and prepare for the opening to coincide with the start of COP26.

With the impending threat of rising sea levels Seaford is on literally on the frontline of the climate crisis – a crisis which is so challenging it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. However, SEA aims to support people to overcome this paralysis and take positive and practical action. The Alliance wants to build networks between local people and organisations,

so that together they can build a stronger and more resilient community. It was only just over a year ago that SEA was formed. Initially due to COVID, and lack of a meeting space, everything was online. As a result, the Alliance has a very informative website www. seafuture.org providing advice and inspiration on a range of environmental topics including travel, energy, food, waste and biodiversity. However, the opening of the Climate Hub represents an important new step, providing a very flexible and accessible space for people to gather together and find out more about environmental issues locally and worldwide. The hub’s first day was very lively, with people popping in to see exhibitions of the work being done by local groups, including Trees for Seaford, Friends of the Downs, On the Verge, and Seaford schools. Visitors were treated to a spread of vegan cakes and cookies while they chatted about future plans and how to get involved. In the afternoon the hub hosted its first Repair Café offering free fixes on a range of items including clothes, bikes and electrical goods. This was followed in the evening by a showing of the environmental documentary film 2040. In addition to regular film nights and a monthly Repair Café, the hub will provide, talks and workshops, activities for children, a Community Fridge and a Revive store for everyday essentials such school uniform and kitchen equipment. Everyone is welcome to just drop in for a chat and a cuppa, and make free use of the library and children’s area. Opening times and details of events will be publicised on the website and the door of the hub.

Seaford Photographic Society We were fortunate to have three excellent speakers giving talks during October, starting with photographer Roff Smith (www.roffsmithphotography.com), a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. For the past 30 years he has been travelling extensively and photographing for some of the world’s great publications. He has visited every continent and over 100 countries. As well as giving us some history of the origins of National Geographic, he shared a selection of his wonderful photos. Many of these were taken within a few miles of his home in St Leonards-on-Sea and featured meticulously planned images of him on his bike at various locations. We particularly liked his Edward Hopper style images and he even has a print of one of these in New York’s Edward Hopper Museum. Round 3 of the PDI League competition was judged by Gerald Kitiyakara LRPS. In the standard group Peter Cavanagh and Martin Brewer both scored 20/20 for their images. There were eight 20s awarded in the advanced group, including two each for both Chris Dawson and Simon Watkins. Our second talk of the month was by professional IT instructor Richard O’Brien and was entitled Architecture: Exposure to Edit. This was a two-hour talk on shooting internal and external architecture images, covering equipment, tricks and thought process, all from the point of view of an amateur photographer. It also included a live demonstration of editing techniques using a combination

12

of Lightroom and Photoshop and I think we all came away having learnt something new. The above talk was very well timed as it was followed by the first two set-subject competitions of the season, for Architecture and Monochrome. There were 27 monochrome images entered, and Jamie Sheldon took the winner’s trophy with one of his excellent Formula 1 motor racing shots. Chris Dawson took second place and Simon Watkins third. Thelma Long’s very creative image won the Architecture competition, with Kevin Smoker and Chris Dawson second and third. The final talk of the month was by acclaimed artist and photographer Jane Lazenby BA(hons) Fine Art, QTFE(2), ASEA, LRPS, DPAGB, BPE4, EFIAP, AMPA (www. ejlazenbyphotography.co.uk). Jane started her career as an artist but then discovered the creative potential of Photoshop and now produces beautiful fine art photographs. This particular talk was all about how to use Photoshop to create textures and use them to produce composite images using layers. The first part of the evening was about finding and photographing suitable textures, and after the break she went on to do some live edits to show the artistic potential of this technique. Members were particularly impressed with the demonstration of how to easily improve distracting backgrounds using simple texture layers and blending modes. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including all the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and more. It is updated every week. The live music performance stage will be hosted by Shannon Smith, with an eclectic mix of vocalists and musician performances throughout the day within the Crouch Gardens Market space. The last film of Seaford Community Cinema’s current season is on Christmas Magic Saturday when it will be showing children’s movie Arthur Christmas (U) at the Barn Theatre on 4th December at 6pm. Directed by Sarah Smith and Barry Cook, it stars James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton in a storyline that imagines the dysfunctional Santa family struggling to get the presents down chimneys on time. This is animated Christmas enchantment to conclude Seaford’s special day. The Times critic Wendy Hide described it as ‘disarming, imaginative and genuinely funny.’ Tickets at £6 non members, £5 members and £3.50 under-18s are available from www. ticketsource.co.uk, from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street or on the door. Current Covid guidelines apply, and at the time of writing the cinema was limiting seats to 100 and allowing patrons to choose whether or not they wear a mask.

BANKING ON A GREENER FUTURE It’s very timely, after the COP26 conference, that 4 Clinton Place, once home to Seaford’s Nat West Bank, has been repurposed as SEA Climate Hub, a welcoming centre championing environmental issues and promoting local green initiatives. It’s a practical, useful and relevant place for everyone in the town to visit and find out how they can make a difference. It’s open to all and you can come along to repair, fix, swap, borrow and learn, as well as to offer your own ideas, knowledge and skills about a greener future. You can enjoy inspiring talks and exhibitions, take part in workshops and get stuck into local projects, from repairing to re-wilding. In the first week of December, drop in to Treasure from Trash, a family friendly pop-up selling exhibition of surprising, creative upcycling from around the globe. As well as enjoying the engaging displays, you can take this one-off opportunity to buy greener Christmas gifts, choosing from hundreds of inventive, unexpected, and often stylish, treasures for unique presents. Every handmade object on show was once something else, ranging from rolled paper and bottle top jewellery to licence plate handbags, tin-can collectibles, papier-mêche masks, misprinted metal boxes and briefcases, and sturdy metal tools, braziers and utensils. Treasure from Trash is at SEA Climate Hub, 4 Clinton Place, Seaford BN25 1NN. Daily from Friday, December 3rd to Saturday 11th December (excluding Sunday 5th December), 10.30am to 4pm. Entry free. Greenhavens Network is delighted to launch its Wilder Garden webpage. It’s got a huge amount of resources to help communities make a difference to nature in their own homes. The information has been localised by local experts in the communites including Gardening In Seaford, Geoff Stonebanks from Seaford, Peacehaven Horticultural Society and a South Downs National Park Ranger. https://greenhavens.network/wilder-gardens/

The old town hall tea room Following our enforced closure earlier in the year we are pleased to say we have bounced back to our precovid level of trading. In order to operate a successful community-based operation you need to have loyal customers and loyal volunteers – we are pleased to say we are fortunate to have both. It is always rewarding when we see regular clients who we look forward to seeing often on a weekly or, in some cases, daily basis who have become ‘Friends of the Tea Room. Our volunteers get used to seeing old faces and are able to chat to them about what’s going on in their lives. If however people just want to come in and have a quiet tea or coffee and a biscuit they will be equally welcome. As we move closer to the Christmas festivities, we hope to see more people dropping in for a quick drink whilst shopping. There is nowhere nicer to come than the oldest in-use building in Seaford with it’s eclectic collection of teapots. Our opening times are Monday to Friday, 10am to 1pm and Saturday 10am to 12 noon.

DECK THE HALLS:

Christine trained at Liverpool School of Art during the 1980s specialising in printed textiles. She worked for design studios and freelanced in London, selling her artwork internationally to fashion companies who produced her designs on all manner of clothing.

Gallery Uno, 14 High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Open Daily: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays 12pm – 3pm from Thursday 2nd December until Thursday 23rd December.

In 2001 Christine retrained to become a primary school teacher, working in London for six years before moving to East Sussex to continue teaching in rural village schools around Heathfield.

An exhibition of fine art, design and craft for the festive season

It was a truly momentous event for the Sussex Arts Collective members participating in their inaugural exhibition UNO ONE and those who toiled over redecorating the gallery as the doors were opened on 4th November to their own dedicated exhibition space, GALLERY UNO. Their reward was a steady stream of eager visitors making their way to see what was on offer, many leaving the gallery with their spoils and those who left empty handed vowing to return soon. And so, their season of monthly exhibitions continues. On Thursday 2nd December the gallery opens for the festive offering, Deck the Halls. A fresh crop of exhibitors will join the gallery to display a profusion of quality fine art, design and craft items that make thoughtful gifts for friends, family or even for oneself at surprisingly affordable prices. The gallery will also launch the first of six specially commissioned limited edition prints designed by Stefan Mucha of Sussex Art Prints. This will be a chance for you to own this very unique numbered and certified piece of artwork based on the UNO logo. In this edition Seaford Scene our popular feature that puts a spotlight on one of the Collective’s members returns. This month is Christine Masters, excited to be part of the Sussex Collective’s first ever Christmas show at Gallery Uno.

Christine Masters BA Hons

Following careers in textile design and then in teaching, Christine is now happiest drawing and painting from her home and garden in Cross-in-Hand.

22

Leaving teaching 2½ years ago Christine followed her overwhelming desire to ‘just draw’. Much of Christine’s work is inspired by the beautiful scenery of the South Downs and coastland. She particularly enjoys the challenge of creating tone and atmosphere in monotone, and loves the immediacy of fine-line pens to describe the flow, texture and pattern of landscapes and landmarks. Her graphic images are then further personalised with her own style of decorative foliage. Christine also makes detailed botanical drawings, often floral, but also natural forms such as fruit and vegetables, seed heads and conkers. Using fine-line pens she adds colourwashes to the images with permanent inks to fully describe the beauty of these forms. Christine also draws and paints clients’ homes and their gardens to commission. She is extremely versatile and has been commissioned to capture various other subjects, such as house interiors, dragonflies and even tractors! In the short time Christine has been actively painting and drawing again, she has produced a large portfolio. She exhibits with the Sussex Collective in Seaford, the Green Tree Gallery in Horsham, the Grierson Galleries in Cranbrook and takes part in South East Open Studios events. She also enjoys the opportunity to meet people, selling prints, cards and discussing possible commissions at art and craft fairs. Seaford u3a News In December the usual and very popular coffee morning will be replaced by a special Christmas Tea. This will be on Wednesday 15th December from 3pm to 5pm at the Constitutional Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. Christmas music will be played on handbells and by the u3a recorder group. As usual it will be open to both members and non-members. The afternoon will be free and some seasonal snacks will be served. There may have to be some limitation on numbers if the event is over-subscribed. Not to be outdone at the Christmas table, one member with Polish ancestry led three Polish vegetarian/vegan cooking sessions for members to experience and enjoy in her small kitchen. Due to demand, the course was repeated several times. At the finish each time, participants sat down to a tasting lunch, consisting of food just demonstrated and cooked. Here are some examples of what was on offer: It started with Borsch, spelt Barszcz in Polish, a traditional soup eaten all year round, but especially at the table on Christmas Eve. There are many versions of this soup and three types were tasted. The Christmas Eve version is a clear Barszcz which can be drunk from a heatproof glass as a starter to the meal. A delicate stock of carrots, charred onion and prunes is the base. A spoonful of all spice is added, as well as salt and pepper (all spice is called the ‘English herb’ in Polish and is a popular addition to sweet and savoury dishes). Next sliced raw beetroot – the star of the dish – is added; lots of beetroot is necessary, three bunches for 4 litres of water. Twenty minutes before serving, apple slices are floated and simmered on the jewelled red soup to sweeten it. To serve, all the vegetables are taken out, (you have a ready-made beetroot salad with these). The soup is clear and it is accompanied by small pierogi dumplings at Christmas time. The Polish Christmas Eve meal consists of twelve dishes to represent the twelve Apostles. There is no meat, but lots of fish. A young carp with soft bones is favoured. Pierogi dumplings are served with the hot Barszcz described above and as a separate dish. There are lots of fillings for Pierogi. Members tried several

varieties, accompanied by a shot of vodka (optional!) to aid digestion. The final session of the course was based on sweet bakes. A shortcake with milled blue poppy seed filling was baked and eaten, and ‘Chrusty’, sweet pastry shapes, were fried, dusted with icing sugar and sampled. Last of all on the sweet day members indulged in a slice of baked cheesecake made with Polish cheese. In the New Year there will be sessions on East European cakes. All members of u3a are welcome to join. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack. SEAFORD ROTARY

Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs

Seaford Rotary would like to express its immense gratitude to those members of the Seaford community who attended the Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs in 2021, and contributed to the Fair’s success. The six Fairs raised over £5,300, which is compatible with the monies raised at seven fairs in the record year of 2018. The August Fair with 85 stalls had the most stalls, but the June Fair was the most successful with over £1,100 raised. There were 394 stalls at the six fairs. The Rotary plant stall set a record in August by taking a massive £310, exceeding the previous record set in 2018. Including the plant stall, the Rotary stall sold nearly £920 of items. Vendor donations totalled nearly £270. Over £1,000 was deposited in our donation buckets. All the money raised at the Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs will be put to good use for charitable causes. Seaford Rotary is glad to be able to announce that Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs will take place on the West Martello Field on the following dates in 2022, 3rd April, 1st May, 5th June, 3rd July, 7th August, 4th September and 2nd October. We look forward to seeing you there.

Can We Help? Grant Applications

Seaford Rotary in partnership with Martello Rotary, has developed a Grant Application scheme which supports individuals and community organisations within Seaford, including Bishopstone and Alfriston to raise aspirations, engender community spirit, assist those in need, or improve the natural environment. There are no set limits to the amounts available for local and worthy causes, although most grants are between £250 – £500. Requests may be from or for: • organisations or individuals with specific needs not able to be met by state, local authority, or specific charity funding, either in full or in part, • projects that benefit the local community and the environment,

26

• national or international charities and organisations that aid individuals or groups of people within the ocal area of Seaford, • individuals or groups aspiring to excel in sports or arts to assist with significant costs to enable them to achieve their potential, • challenging and demanding projects that will stretch the individual, preferably beneficial to the community or environment, • projects that help marginalised people and communities in a positive way. For more information visit either www.seafordrotary. org.uk or www.martellorotary.org.uk.

The Duchess of Cornwall visits St Wilfrid’s There was an air of excitement at St Wilfrid’s Hospice at the beginning of November as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall dropped into the hospice during its 40th anniversary year. It was wonderful to see The Duchess back at St Wilfrid’s – she officially opened the new hospice building in Broadwater Way in 2014. She was met by Chief Executive David Scott-Ralphs and Chair of Trustees Fiona MacIntyre, and greeted by staff, volunteers and supporters in the hospice café, before heading to the Inpatient Unit to meet and talk to patients and family members. The Duchess also met some of those supported by the hospice’s Seahorse Project, a bereavement support service for children and young people. The Duchess planted a tree in the hospice gardens as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project – find

out more at queensgreencanopy. org. Ten-year-old Holly Fuller was delighted to present a posy to the Duchess. She and her family have been supported by the hospice’s Seahorse Project, a bereavement support service for children and young people. Holly’s mum, Debbie Kelly said: ‘After I lost my dad and my nan, I was struggling with my grief and so were the children. I contacted the Seahorse Project and their support really helped.’ St Wilfrid’s hospice was, and always has been, supported by the community – it really is a charity for local people, supported by local people. Chief Executive David ScottRalphs said: ‘Local people helped set up the hospice in Mill Gap Road in 1981– you provided funds to enable St Wilfrid’s to move to its new building in Broadwater Way, and you continue to offer financial support and help through volunteering today. Thank you so much for all that you do for us. ‘The Duchess was very interested to hear how our services have developed since her original visit and we are grateful to her for coming back to see how St Wilfrid’s is continually improving and striving to be the best we can be for the community.’ The Seahorse Project is kindly funded by Children in Need. Last-minute Christmas Gift Cake Traditionally Christmas cakes are made well in advance, but if you haven’t had time try our last-minute version. It makes two, so you can also give one away as a gift, and solve two problems with one recipe! Makes 2 cakes, each serving 8 Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 1-1¾ hours, depending on oven.

Ingredients

600g good-quality mixed dried fruits 150ml whisky, warmed 150g stem ginger, drained, plus 8 tsp ginger syrup from the jar 200g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 300g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp mixed spice 200g soft light brown sugar 4 large free-range eggs 2 tbsp milk Finely grated zest of 2 small oranges and 2 lemons 50g ground almonds 150g whole glacé cherries

Method

Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the fruit to plump up. Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a food processor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin. Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl, and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until pale and fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and their whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries. Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾ hours (this depends very much on your oven. A fan oven is super-quick, whereas an aga is slower). If you’re unsure, check after an hour then every fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm and golden brown. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked. You can cover it loosely with foil after 1 hour if the centre needs more time. This prevents the surface darkening too much. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, and then remove to a wire rack to cool. Trim a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard. Cut the cake in half to make two rectangles.

counselling for a troubled child. Watch this space for the next TYCP benefit date in this friendly pub.

The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP), which is always so grateful for the time and money given to the locallybased charity, has an ongoing hero in the form of quiz master Peter Linsdell. Pre-Covid Peter was hosting popular quiz nights four times a year at The Old Plough and TYCP is delighted that he has now been able to restart them. He composed a series of testing questions for the first of the new series in October and word must have got out about the popularity of this event because tables were filled with up to eight quizzers in each team vying to air their knowledge. The result was a very useful £315, a sum which will help substantially towards providing 10 sessions of

A block of 10 sessions with an appropriately trained counsellor actually costs nearer to £500, and thanks to the generosity of Seaford people and various foundations and corporate grant funding, TYCP is on course to provide therapy for 80 students at Seaford schools this academic year. Local support is essential because as well as contributing to the costs of therapy, it also demonstrates to the larger agencies that TYCP is backed by the local community. A schools-based charity, TYCP is all too aware that the ongoing effects of Covid have greatly increased the need for its services. According to the Director of Public Health for East Sussex, 11% of boys and 8% of girls aged 5 to 16 have a clinically significant mental health problem and latest indications are that these figures are rising.

A Gift for UC h r i s t m a sU My Journey as a Belly Dancer is Elizabeth’s true story of the challenges and dangers she experienced as a Professional Belly Dancer. Her youth was spent in Seaford and Rottingdean before moving to London, where she worked as a Legal Secretary and after a broken relationship in Barristers Chambers, she went on holiday to Morocco where she sensed ‘deja vu’ whilst watching an Arabic Dancer in one of the Hotels. She learnt the dance and fate led her to a Turkish Cypriot restaurant where the owner showed her the ropes to become professional, and whilst she danced in the clubs and restaurants at night as a Professional Belly Dancer, she also kept her job as a Temp Legal Secretary during the day, finding herself in two very different worlds! Many years later someone from her past tracks her down, saying he has such fond memories of her and wants to make contact. But does she dare meet up with him, since he’s become a famous celebrity?

A fascinating and compelling read! Order: Troubador Publishing Ltd and Waterstones. Amazon, AbeBooks and Book Depository. Around £9.99. 38

SEAHAVEN HARD OF HEARING CLUB Twenty members met to hear a very interesting talk by Jackie Marsh-Hobbs on Brighton Pavilion. George IV first visited Brighton in 1762. He was then Prince of Wales. He purchased a two-up-two-down house on the site of the present Royal Pavilion. In 1787 he demolished that property and built The Marine Pavilion. This is still the base of the present building. As he wanted to entertain more people more lavishly, he added to Marine Pavilion to form what is known as The Royal Pavilion today. By this time he had become the Prince Regent. It was the first building in Europe based on an Indian design. He added the Dome as a stables for his horses and The Corn Exchange as a riding school. The only known secret tunnel running from the Pavilion is the one to the Dome so he could reach his horses without having to go outside. A fallacy is that there is a tunnel to Marlborough House, where Maria Fitzherbert resided.

On the death of George without issue, his daughter having died in childbirth, the crown passed to his brother William who continued to use the Royal Pavilion. Upon William’s death, as he also had no legitimate children, the crown would have passed to the next brother who had been Duke of Kent, but he pre-deceased both his brothers. Therefore Victoria, as the only daughter of the Duke of Kent became Queen. She visited The Royal Pavilion six times but, although liking the palace, did not like Brighton. She felt there was no privacy as she and Albert were followed whenever they went out and about in the town. The Pavilion was then going to be demolished. Over three years from 1845, 123 wagonloads of items, including furniture, the fireplaces and wallpaper, were taken to London. The property was left empty for several years and then, instead of being demolished, was sold to Brighton Commissioners for the sum of £53,000. Although empty, this was a very good price as George IV had spent £500,000 to build and furnish the property. In WWI the banqueting room was made into a hospital for Indian Soldiers. The gateway at the southern end of the Pavilion was given to the town by the people of India as a thank you for helping their soldiers. It was built for an elephant to be able to go through it. During WWII the gardens were turned into allotments to encourage the people of Brighton to use their own gardens for growing food. The basement and tunnel were used as an air-raid shelter. George V and Queen Mary were the first royals to give items removed from the Pavilion back to the Council. Since then the present Queen has given items back and has loaned 150 items to be shown in their original places. The building was restored and opened to the public, and used for various functions to bring in funds to carry on the restoration. Unfortunately in 1975 a fire broke out in the music room and it took 11 years to restore the room back to its former glory. As the work was being completed the scaffolding around the building moved in a storm and a ball on top of a minaret fell through the ceiling and landed in the newly restored music room. The carpet was restored and if you look carefully you can spot this repair today. After the talk, tea and the raffle took place and final numbers for the Christmas lunch were taken. Our next meeting is our Christmas Party, where we will be entertained by the Seaford Strummers.

Friends of Blatchington Green – The start of a new adventure Over the summer Seaford residents set up a new voluntary community group – The Friends of Blatchington Green. Blatchington Green is a small area of green space (about 45 x 21 metres) in the corner of the North Way estate, where North Way meets Firle Road. The Friends will take over site management to improve it for the benefit of wildlife and the local community. When the North Way estate was built in the 1980s, the developer was obliged by Lewes District Council to hand over Blatchington Green, plus cash, for the benefit of those who would live in the new houses. Seaford Town Council became responsible in 2000. In the Middle Ages drovers brought sheep from the South Downs, using ancient paths, to export through Seaford to the continent. The public footpath that crosses Blatchington Green is probably a remnant from this time. Blatchington Green was part of the First World War training area for training troops stationed at North Camp. Today Blatchington Green abuts the South Downs National Park. The Green provides a wildlife corridor from open country into the centre of Seaford. Badgers, foxes, toad,s hedgehogs, woodpeckers, owls, slow worms, Brimstone butterflies and iridescent rose chafers are just a few of the interesting creatures that live in and around this area. The Friends of Blatchington Green initially met to fight plans from Seaford Town Council to sell the site for high density housing. The group was successful in 2018

and the council shelved plans. Residents nevertheless continued to canvass local councillors and, in June 2021, the council voted to offer this site to local resident management. The council wanted to save costs, but also contribute to the greening of Seaford. Over 60 people have joined the Friends of Blatchington Green, half of whom are working volunteers. For some weeks now the Friends have been seeking to conclude an agreement with the council, allowing us to manage the site in accordance with local wishes over a sensible period so our energy and plans have a chance to show results. The Friends must balance the needs of wildlife with community use. We have held small concerts and games on the Green. More activities are planned, hopefully including this year a Christmas carol concert, to raise funds for more planting of wildflowers, shrubs and trees. A bench may also be installed for the use of residents, including those in an adjacent nursing home. There may be complaints about the UK planning system. But here it did attempt to take account of the physical and mental health of residents. Medical science has increasingly reinforced this view that it is important to have green spaces close to where people live and work. Many would say that Covid has underlined just this. Seaford has a number of these jewels. They need to be preserved from developers, and councils with depressingly few options to generate cash. Several people around Seaford are trying to form groups to manage their sites. They need support. To its credit, Seaford Town Council is now offering encouragement, but the development threat never really disappears. Get in touch: info@Blatchingtongreen.co.uk.

Come and join us to try homemade Galette des Rois – Cake of Kings – and to crown a King or Queen of the day! We’re also, of course, hoping 2022 will be the year we can resume exchange visits with our lovely twin village of Veules-les-Roses on the Normandy coast. Who’s Who in Seaford?

Alice Carter, co-founder of Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP) and owner of Boxbird Gallery. Alice has lived in Seaford for over 10 years and has been running SCIP for four years and Boxbird for 12 years. She was educated at The Manor House School for Girls in Surrey, and following 6th Form she went to the Welsh Film School in Newport and left with a BA Hons in Film Studies. Alice has also worked as the site manager for a film studio, a wedding makeup artist, ran a clothing shop, was the senior events manager at Rockinghorse Charity and is a mum (ongoing!). Alice is a very busy mum, however when the time allows she would like to join a choir. She is married and has two children, Noah, 10 and Fin almost 5. She has a ginger tom cat called Mr Bojangles. What does your role involve? I have the best job in the world! I sell artworks by illustrators such as Graham Carter, all over the world to customers and stockists! I also sell at art fairs in the uk when COVID restrictions allow! SCIP is my passion project – I help curate the exhibitions, design the workshops, co-ordinate the youth engagement programmes, fundraise and work with local business and trusts to ensure we have the money to keep the projects free for our beneficiaries! What do you most enjoy about your role? The creative side of my work is always my favourite. I adore contemporary illustration, printmaking and design and love working out ways to help other people fall in love with it. What do you like best about Seaford? I love the community. and that if you want to be part of something you can here. I love how passionate everyone is about their little pocket of the town, their clubs and community work. The beach is pretty spectacular too! What is your favourite piece of music? Someone’s Daughter by Beth Orton (or anything from the Trailer Park Album). What is your favourite film? The Goonies.

46

What book are you reading at the moment? I have just finished The Salt Path by Raynor Winn, and I’m about to start How to Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being on a wild campsite with my husband and kids. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford? The Beach… I love how it changes every day, it’s mood alters with the elements. I love watching my children swim in the shallows in the summer, and the glow of the Autumn sunsets. It’s a treasure. Which living person do you most admire? My mother. What makes you sad? When my kids are sad. What words or phrases do you most overuse? Amazing. Let’s do this. Awesome! How do you relax? TV – I know, it’s not a fashionable response but it helps me tune out of everything. But I’m very picky about what I watch! I also love walking, I can’t do long hikes these days because of a foot injury, but being out on the downs is very relaxing for me! What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Live your life, do not sit around waiting for your life, go out and take it. You have the power to make anything happen. What is the first line of your favourite poem? On the Ning Nang Nong where the Cows go bong... What is your favourite journey? For our Honeymoon my husband and I hired a campervan and travelled round Scotland for four weeks – it was the most incredible journey I have ever been on! How would you spend a million pounds? I would pay off the mortgage, pay off our debt, invest in SCIP, and take the kids on their first overseas holiday! What is your most memorable learning experience? Moving from Surrey to Newport in South Wales. Living in such a deprived part of the world for four years was one of the best educations I have ever had – it helped me understand how privileged I was and how little I knew about the real world. What keeps you awake at night? My four year old! What is your greatest fear? My children being hurt What is your favourite smell? Fresh brewed coffee What is the best advice you have ever been given? To relax into the heat in the summer, don’t fight against it! Which person in history would you most like to meet? Freddie Mercury. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My husband (and I’m not just saying that, he’s awesome!).

Super Saturday Seed Swap On Saturday 23rd October the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven was transformed into the Greenhaven’s Super Saturday Seed Swap Event. Lots of members of the Greenhaven’s Network of local organisations came together to promote their work in the community. Supported by local charities and craft stalls, the day started with a huge shout out from Newhaven Town’s Crier and Greenhaven’s Champion Karen Rigby-Faux. The seed swapping was hugely popular with people young and old coming from far and wide to take part and bring along their seeds. Plenty of generously donated seeds were also available to purchase. The event was really busy with everyone saying how lovely it was to see the venue buzzing again, and the café had to restock the popular cakes due to demand half-way through. The organisers estimate over 250 people came through the

doors of the Hillcrest Centre that afternoon. Face painting and kids tombola’s kept the little ones happy, whilst the parents checked out everything on offer, including Peacehaven’s Community orchards apple juice. There was a film show during the event, showcasing the new Wilder Gardens Documentary, which was very well received, and a grand raffle drawn by the Newhaven Mayor Lesley Boniface. Over £220 was raised by this very successful event, which was about raising the awareness of the good things that Greenhavens do, and promoting the wilder gardens project work and other local charities. The organisers are already hoping this will now be an annual event in the local calendar.

Happy Christmas from Refill We can hardly believe that this year is nearly over and we are looking forward to getting out and about more in 2022. Recently we welcomed two new members to our scheme...Newhaven Fort and the SEA Climate Hub in Clinton Place. Newhaven Fort will happily refill your water bottle and also welcome you to use your own coffee cup in the café. SEA Climate Hub will also refill your bottle whilst you attend an event or meeting there, see page 10. You may have noticed on the app that Morrisons petrol station will now refill you water bottle as well. Outdoor water points are springing up all along our coast now, with one opening in Peacehaven shortly and funds being raised for another in Eastbourne. Investigations are being carried out for another one in Seaford as well, but this is in the early stages. The five

we have already are well used. In the last four years so many of you have taken on board the need to say goodbye to single-use plastic water bottles, for which we and the environment thank you. Even so the litter picking continues, and we are so appreciative of our council teams and residents who do this. I am sure you are all aware that much of it is from take away drinks. The Refill family and message is now spreading across the world now, so let’s keep it going. Do let us know via our email below if you run or know of a business that wants to join the scheme or now offers refills for coffee etc – they can sign themselves up using the app or website and add the coffee cup icon. Please don’t forget you can download the Refill app here to get the location maps to find Refill points https://www.refill.org.uk/get-the-refill-app/ and also register your business and others if you have their permission. ANNECY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL SCOOPS TOP SUSSEX TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS Annecy Catholic Primary School in Seaford is celebrating the news that staff have scooped two overall wins and a district win in this year’s Sussex Teacher of the Year Awards. Headteacher Paul Gallagher and school secretary Chris Baillie have both won Sussex-wide awards, with Paul being named Overall Sussex Head Teacher of the Year and Chris taking the accolade of Overall Sussex Receptionist of the Year. Meanwhile, Reception class teacher Frankie Chappell has been named Primary School Teacher of the Year for Lewes District.

together to work collaboratively for the benefit of all children in the Catholic schools of Sussex.

‘As you can imagine we are absolutely delighted to have won these awards,’ says Paul. ‘All I can say of my own win is that it is a privilege to lead such a wonderful school community. I have such a great team supporting me, including Chris, who has kept the school running smoothly for the past 16 years.

The Sussex Teacher of the Year Awards are organised by Inspire Schools and KM Charity Team, with proceeds raised from fundraising at the ceremony going to literacy and road safety projects in the region.

‘Frankie’s win is thoroughly deserved for all the work, dedication and enthusiasm he puts into making the transition from nursery to primary school a smooth and enjoyable experience for the children and their families.’ Annecy has open days in December and January, if you would like to visit the school, please do not hesitate to contact office@annecy.org.uk to make an appointment. A Creative Storm for Seaford....

S. R. DAVIS & SONS ESTABLISHED 1978

BUILDERS & DECORATORS UPVC FACIAS & GUTTERS for all maintenance repairs & alterations interior and exterior decorating extensions & conversions A new creative arts club for the community is gearing up to launch at Seaford Little Theatre in early January 2022. Lifesong Arts is the brainchild of local professional Clarinettist Natalie White, who moved to Seaford last year to create a new musical life down in Sussex. Natalie’s passion and love of classical music is the driving force behind this new project, which aims to provide inspirational music/dance/song workshops for children, and give young people a space where they can let their imagination soar and reconnect with their creative spirit. A mum of twins, Natalie was concerned about the loss of creativity for children in an age where computers and screens seem to be dominating the lives of many families, especially after a year which saw families in Lockdown due to Covid. Natalie hopes to bring the community back together again through the Arts and reunite us all with our imagination... Lifesong Creative Arts Club brings together a team of inspirational musicians, singers and dancers, with a combined aim to bring creative arts back into the lives of the Seaford community. Alongside a Saturday music school and weekly workshops for children and adults, Lifesong will also be running an Open Mike Night on Friday evenings to provide a performance space for the community at large. Lifesong Creative Arts club will be hosting a launch concert on Friday 3rd December at Seaford Little Theatre, Steyne Road, 6.30pm Do come and join us for an evening of music, dance and an open floor for budding singers/poets/storytellers/musicians to perform. For details please see our website Lifesongarts.co.uk or call Natalie on 07936 511079.

Trees for Seaford

Trees for Christmas: Holly and Ivy

In this festive season we were delighted to hear some good news on funding. ESCC has won a grant from the Local Authority Treescapes Fund to plant trees in Seaford. This will include 180 new trees, mostly replacing stumps of trees that contracted Dutch elm disease. Planting will go ahead in both grass verges and pavements, with a further 20-30 trees in the Chyngton Estate. Trees for Seaford will also receive funding towards the 90 trees we’re planting this autumn.

It’s been wonderful to get together in person again, and this has given us some added momentum and a space to explore the best way to organise the group going forward. We’re always keen to hear from people who’d like to join our enthusiastic and friendly group. We were also successful in our application for the Tree Council’s Branching Out Fund, to cover the costs of a project at Annecy school. We had a great time and were very impressed with the enthusiasm

with affordable eco insulated roof panels

and knowledge of pupils, who were working with us to plant an orchard and meadow. We hope that our young planters will grow up alongside the young trees, and maybe will be running our group in the future! Tree of the month really has to be the Holly tree! Holly provides dense cover for nesting birds, flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects, and the leaves are devoured by the caterpillars of the holly blue butterfly and various moths. If there are both male and female trees nearby, then berries appear on the female tree, which are a vital food source for birds and small mammals. Ivy, too, is hugely beneficial to wildlife, as an essential food source for insects and birds when little else is flowering. The high fat content of the berries is a nutritious food resource for birds. It’s particularly important to many insects, including bees, hoverflies and wasps, before they go into hibernation. This woody climber has climbing stems with specialised hairs that allow it to stick to surfaces as it climbs. Enjoy the festive season and we will be back in the New Year. https://treesforseaford.wordpress.com/

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford An invitation to ‘Christmas Crackers’ on Saturday 11th December Attendees at the District 25 meeting of Inner Wheel enjoyed a superb lunch prepared by Seaford Inner Wheel at Ashington Village Hall on 4th November. District Chairman Jennier Pierce for the Inner Wheel Year 2021-22, a Past President of Seaford Inner Wheel, introduced her chosen charity for the year: Medical Detection Dogs. A very interesting presentation was made by Millie Harries and Biddy Wood who are Volunteer Speakers from Medical Detection Dogs. This organisation trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease with the aim of developing faster, more efficient and less invasive diagnostics that lead to better patient outcomes. Bio Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of those diseases in samples such as urine, breath and sweat. Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are trained to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal

odour triggered by their disease and alert them to an impending medical event, helping them manage complex, life-threatening medical conditions and improving their quality of life. Members of Seaford Inner Wheel are looking forward Christmas Crackers! on Saturday 11th December when they will be raising funds in support of St. Wilfrid’s Hospice. The event will take place at Cross Way Church, Clinton Place from 11am to 2pm when coffee, tea, mince pies, soup, cakes and scones will be on sale plus a Children’s Lucky Dip, together with festive stalls and a visit from Father Christmas.

SEAFORD HEAD PROBUS CLUB

Seaford Head Probus Club kept going during the Pandemic Not to be deterred by lockdowns, the Club continued with some activities during the second half of 2020/ first half of 2021, and has now resumed it’s normal full programme of monthly meetings. At first meetings were held via Zoom when our Member Dennis Cockram gave a talk, from personal experience, with the frightening title There is a Bomb On the Plane. While some members welcomed the opportunity to learn and practise the new online medium, others were less keen. So it was with some relief when government rules were progressively

loosened to allow real meetings outside, and later inside local pubs. Many were also fascinated by an exclusive visit in June to Filching Manor Motor Museum. In early October a coach full of Members’ together with partners and guests, toured Somerset over five relaxing days on the Club’s annual holiday. Our monthly lunches resumed in August, and at the most recent of these guest speaker Peter Fellows gave a presentation on the history of Shoreham Airport. In November a light-hearted Skittles Tournament, including a Fish ‘n’ Chip Lunch was held at the Crouch Bowling Club. New Members will be made most welcome. If you are a retired or semi-retired professional or business man looking to boost your social circle please contact our Secretary Brian Carter on 01323 898628 for more information. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month for lunch, followed by a speaker. Meetings are held at Seaford Golf Club, Firle Road. Don Macarthur President

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

SEAFORD YOUTH FORUM Time for our third look at the shops supporting the ‘Use it or lose it’, keep it local campaign. This time we’re in Broad St and Clinton Place. Let’s start then on the east side with Huckleberry Hair, SAM’S COBBLERS (who will be engraving our trophy), and HarriNat’s. These are followed by Chestnut Tree, Fotobox Ambers Florist, Crosby’s Menswear, Camerons, Cloe’s Café, Julie’s Scoop & Weigh, Grapetree, Ageless Skincare, Seaford News and the The Grumpy Chef. What an eclectic mix with some long time favourites in there. On the opposite side, starting at Walbrin’s corner, we find Lara’s, which took over from Millie’s, Evuina’s, Sussex Eyecare, St Wilfrid’s, and the Real Deli now no longer operating but thanks Chris for all you’ve given to the town and for your support. Then come Sweet Moments, Foam & Fabric, Premier Travel, Animal Fare and Sussex Stationers. Pomegranite did not wish to participate but did make a contribution, generous as ever.

Moving to Clinton Place we start with Be Creative, then Marian’s sadly gone but now the tempting Beth’s Café and Cakery, Snipz, Star Dry Cleaners, Brewer’s, David Jordan, Blue Room, Scope and Mr Cycles. Across from them we’ve been helped by Unique Hairdresser’s, Your Construction Shop, Intersport, Delicious Donor, Café Seven, Mortgage Adviser and, last but not least, Home Hardware. The staff there have echoed what others have said that there are several customers who they know have Primary age children but who forget to show their card, so a gentle reminder there, especially with Christmas looming. The recent news that our Lloyds branch is about to join the list of bank closures serves to emphasise the need to make the most of what is on offer locally, so please do let our 112 supporters, along with all our other shops, continue to serve us. Let’s Get Together and Support Seaford’s Shops This Christmas Saturday 4th December is national Small Business Saturday across the UK. But closer to home, it’s also Seaford Christmas Magic. It’s a brilliant day that traditionally kicks off the Christmas shopping period across Seaford. There has never been a better time to look locally for your festive items, presents, and anything else that makes this ‘the most wonderful time of the year.’ When we buy locally, we support our neighbourhoods and give the town centre the best possible chance of remaining lively, sustainable, and successful.

Below are five ways you can support our local economy (and bag yourself a bargain in the process). 1) Buy local or bye local

Remember, Christmas is crucial for independent traders, especially post-pandemic traders. We need to use them, or we could lose them.

2) Vote with your wallet/purse

When you buy from a Seaford business, you are showing that what they bring to the community is valued by you.

3) Get social

Tag the store you bought from in a social media post.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

how small, shows you’re grateful for their local involvement.

5) Post a review – One of the best things about

shopping from smaller, independent businesses is that your purchase really matters to them, and the service is often superior to larger, national retailers. Let the World Wide Web know if your experience with a local shop or business has been positive by leaving a Google review or similar.

Together, we can make a big difference to the future of the town centre and its small businesses. From all at Newberry Tully, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Stephen and Andrew

4) A form of thanks Many small businesses and shops get involved

with supporting community projects and events over the year. A purchase from them, no matter

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD

At our last meeting we received an excellent presentation from Mairin Colleary detailing the overland journey that she and a friend had undertaken to Mongolia. ‘Why on earth would two ladies want to travel overland to Mongolia?’ we asked. ‘Well,’ said Mairin, ‘I had just passed a significant birthday, so I wanted to do something slightly different’. The first stage was to acquire a second-hand van, for conversion into a small motor caravan. Since all the countries they were crossing drove on the right this meant buying a left-hand drive van in Europe, bringing it back to the UK, converting the lighting and other aspects to meet UK legal requirements to get the vehicle registered and insured, and then changing it all back for the first stage of the journey which started in Brussels. A further complication was that ‘Camping Gaz’ is unknown outside mainland Europe, and so the caravan was equipped with a petrol stove! The small size of the vehicle precluded the fitment of an Elsan chemical toilet, so for the whole journey the sanitary arrangements comprised a shovel and a torch. At Brussels they joined 11 other vehicles which were participating in a Charity Rally, although they saw very few of the competitors on the rest of the route. Throughout the journey the major hazards were other drivers, poor roads, roaming camels, the weather, and rivers to be forded. If there was any doubt is to the depth of the water, Mairin sent her friend Kitty ahead on foot! Road signs were virtually unknown. Uzbekistan is generally known for its herds of apparently wild horses; in reality they are farmed for meat.

In many areas there was evidence of large-scale road building by the Chinese. But when the road is finished the workmen do not go home: they stay and colonise the area by stealth. Siberia lived up to its reputation for midges; those in Scotland seem tame by contrast. Throughout the whole trip Mairin and her friend saw nothing but kindness. It seemed that the poorer people were, the happier they were to share what little they had. They met a local boy in Uzbekistan who spoke almost perfect English: not as a result of lessons, but by watching cartoons on Western television. The whole purpose of the trip was to raise money to buy books for Mongolian children – a much prized but virtually unobtainable commodity. The camper van was left behind, to be converted into a mobile library. After a lively question-and-answer session, Mairin was thanked for sharing her adventure with us. Only then did she mention one other fact about the trip: she and her friend had only managed to have two hot showers during the whole journey! For further details of our club please contact our Secretary Gavin on (01323) 893760.

WIN £2500 to help launch a new business LEAP is a FREE Business Start-up Programme that is available to Lewes based residents who are thinking of starting a new business. The Programme is also open to businesses who have been trading less than 6 months. LEAP is delivered by Edeal Enterprise Agency and is fully funded by Lewes District Council; this intensive business support programme offers a £2500 prize in the form of a grant to one lucky winner!

The LEAP Programme is split into the 3 stages: STAGE 1: Attendance at a business start-up workshop, this can be either a physical one-day workshop in Lewes on 17th Jan 2022 or a virtual workshop across 2 half days on the 9th and 10th Feb. After the workshops have been held, 15 candidates are shortlisted to move to stage 2. The remaining candidates are offered additional business advice and support under another mentoring programme. STAGE 2: The 15 selected candidates will be allocated a dedicated business mentor who will work with them to produce a strong, robust business plan. During this period, they will also attend two 3-hour workshops on Finance and Marketing. The completed business plans are submitted and judged when 5 finalists will be selected. The finalists will then present their plan to the judges at a mini–Dragons Den type event where a winner will be chosen. Win £2,500 cash to help get your business idea started!

Have you got a business idea you’d like to turn into a reality?

Sara was taught to knit by her aunt when she was eight years old, and as a result she spent many happy hours creating lace, cross-stitching and tapestries. As an adult, she wanted to develop her passion into a business she could share with other people, so she created The Patchwork Cat Café & Shop in Newhaven. Whether you need a pin, or a large cutting mat, Sara and her team can help at The Patchwork Cat; you can learn how to create amazing patchworks, purchase materials and enjoy tea, coffee and homemade snacks. Christina Ewbank, the Chief Exec of Edeal Enterprise Agency said: ‘Whenever you start a new business, always choose to do something you love. The Patchwork Cat café and shop does just that, and so Sara won £2,500 to help her share her passion for creativity with all her customers.’ Statistics show approx. 660,000 new start-ups register in the UK every year; sadly 80% of businesses fail in year one. The reason is simple: starting up a new business can often lead to unexpected surprises. You might be the best designer, florist, chef, or film maker, but will you need legal advice, marketing guidance and financial support? Who can you turn to for impartial, honest advice? More importantly, at the very start of your journey, it is crucial to create a business plan that outlines who you are, what you do, who your customers are and how your business works. That’s why the LEAP programme has been so valuable for so many business people in the Lewes District. This free, comprehensive business start-up programme provides workshops, seminars, 1 to 1 mentoring and a chance of winning a cash prize of £2,500.

Advertising Feature

Since 2013, residents have been supported to turn their business dreams into reality including massage therapists, haberdasheries, gardeners, handymen, social media gurus and health and safety consultants, to name a few. The LEAP programme starts in January with a oneday workshop in Lewes or a virtual workshop across two days in February. Following this, candidates are selected to attend further workshops and access 1 to 1 mentoring support with a dedicated business coach to help them create a robust business plan. This plan is then judged by a team of experts and finalists are invited to pitch their plan to the judges at a mini-Dragon’s-Den style event. The overall winner receives the accolade of LEAP Entrepreneur of the Year and a £2,500 cash prize which will be presented at a Business Awards Dinner.

Who can benefit?

The programme is fully funded by Lewes District Council and is open to any resident in the Lewes District or any individual who is looking to set up a business in the area. This includes towns and villages like Ringmer, Newhaven, Seaford, Lewes, Peacehaven, Telescombe Cliffs, Chailey, Plumpton, Newick and Ditchling. Businesses trading within the last six months are also eligible to apply.

Key facts

LEAP is open to all residents in the Lewes district over 18 years of age. LEAP starts with an initial one-day business start-up workshop in Lewes in Jan or a virtual workshop across two days in February. 15 candidates are selected to attend interactive workshops on marketing and finance. These take place in the morning and evening – perfect for those with childcare commitments or jobs. Candidates are assigned a dedicated mentor who will work with them to develop a business plan which will be judged by an expert panel of judges. The winner will receive £2,500 cash and the title ‘LEAP Entrepreneur of the Year’ at a celebration Awards Dinner. Applications close on 1st February 2022.

LET’S KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Christmas? The word is made up of two parts ‘Christ’ and ‘mas’ which means ‘Christ celebration’. So Christmas is the birthday celebration of Jesus Christ. The word ‘Christ’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘anointed one’ which in Hebrew is ‘Messiah’. Jesus was a Jew, born over 2,000 years ago in a stable in Bethlehem, Israel. The name Jesus means ‘salvation’. He was condemned as a criminal because He claimed to be the Son of God. He died by crucifixion at the age of 33.

Most of his followers deserted him. He is probably the best known person that ever lived. History indicates that Jesus was most likely not born on 25th December, however this has come to be the traditional time for celebrating His birthday. The real time of His birth was probably September/October time. The Encyclopædia Britannica says that church leaders probably chose 25th December to coincide with the pagan Roman festival marking the ‘birthday of the unconquered sun,’ at the time of the winter solstice. So why do we still celebrate His birth? The coming of Jesus to planet earth is good news! It was foretold hundreds of years before it happened. It is a true historical event. For Christians, his birth was miraculous, his life impacted the world and His death was part of God’s plan. He was the only perfect man that ever lived. He didn’t stay in the grave – He rose from the dead and is waiting for us in heaven. There are several Christmas celebrations happening in Seaford during December – concerts, special services, school nativity plays – so when we go to them, let’s remember we are celebrating Jesus’ birthday! Post-modernist author William Burroughs named his infamous 1959 novel after ‘a frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork.’ Like the drug-fuelled characters of Naked Lunch, 76% of Brits will soon be itching for their festive fix from a bird which has taken a strange, disjointed trip through time and space to land on our plates. So, before you start gobbling this Christmas, allow yourself a frozen moment with the defrosted, oven-cooked, gravy-coated bird perched on the end of your fork. Let’s talk turkey! There are just two species of turkey in the world. The stunning iridescent Ocellated Turkey is confined to the Yucatan peninsula, while the more common Wild Turkey has a range that extends from the sun-baked savannahs of central Mexico, north through the oak forests of the United States. The Wild Turkey is a monstrous, spectacular bird. The huge males prowl the forests, their ruffled black feathers billowing like a cloud of volcanic ash. From this darkness erupts a bare, blue reptilian head with lava flows of red, warty skin dripping from it. These grotesque, leathery skin-flaps – the snood, wattle and caruncle – inflate with blood and are irresistible to females.

This extraordinary animal was revered by primitive people, who plucked its feathers for ceremonial rituals. Centuries ago, one population of Wild Turkey from the hills of southcentral Mexico was tamed. By the time the Aztecs ruled the roost they wore turkey, ate turkey and prayed to Chalchiuhtotolin, their turkey god. Spaniards returned from their Aztec conquests with ships laden with gold, silver and turkey. Not long after, in 1524, turkeys landed in England, where some geographic confusion about their country of origin gave the bird its name. Soon these supposed Turkish delights were being carved and served to the wealthy. Henry VIII may well have been one of the first Brits to enjoy a turkey for Christmas lunch, and then no doubt spent the rest of the afternoon asleep in front of the jester. The turkey’s domestication continued. In eastern England, specialist poulterers developed breeds such as Norfolk Black, Cambridge Bronze and the Broad Breasted White; the bird that we eat today. In 1620 the Pilgrim settlers, in a ‘coals to Newcastle’ scenario, shipped these brainwashed breeds back to North America and proudly gave them to the bemused native people, who for centuries had been enjoying the rich, dark meat of the larger, original Wild Turkeys. It must have been like aliens landing outside Harvey’s Brewery and presenting us with a small glass of weak lager! Today we remain a nation of turkey addicts. Ten million of them were eaten here last Christmas. It’s time to stop staring at your fork and satisfy your Christmas craving – so get it while it’s hot. It’ll be cold turkey for us from tomorrow. Merry Christmas everybody and best wishes for 2022. Michael Blencowe of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Photos: from top: Ocellated Turkey via Wikimedia Commons; Wild Turkey via Wikimedia Commons.

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club Mutiny on the Bounty

Until the Bounty reached the Cape of Good Hope in April 1788, the captain, William Bligh, and the masters’ mate, Fletcher Anderson, had a good working relationship, but later events led to this relationship souring and finally, the mutiny. The ship had been promoted by the Royal Society to collect breadfruit plants from the Polynesian island of Tahiti and transport them to the West Indies, where it was thought they would grow well and be a good source of food for the slaves. Conditions on the ship were poor. To carry the plants the large Captain’s Cabin had been converted into a greenhouse, and most of the 46 crew were cramped into bunks in the ‘cockpit’ and ‘forecastle’. Upon arrival in Tahiti, they set about collecting over 1,000 breadfruit plants. During their five-month stay the crew had little to do and enjoyed a hedonistic life, many of them forming close relationships with the Tahitian women and about half of them catching venereal disease. Captain Bligh was a strict taskmaster and often lambasted the crew for slackness, and resorted to flogging miscreants. In the four weeks after setting sail from Tahiti he is said to have become a paranoid

disciplinarian and Fletcher was often the target of his rages. Fletcher became very depressed and was persuaded that he would garner good support if he carried out a mutiny. On the night of 27th April 1789 he enlisted the help of others and successfully carried out the mutiny – but less than half the ship’s crew supported him. Captain Bligh was set loose with 18 others and five days of provisions in a small, over-crowded boat. They were lucky to survive and make it back to England. HMS Pandora was commissioned to track down the mutineers and bring them back to England for punishment. Nine were caught and three later executed but Fletcher Anderson, most of the mutineers and a number of women from Tahiti made it to Pitcairn Island and later Norfolk Island where they set up a long-lasting community. This display, beautifully presented by David Sumpter at our last meeting, contained a wide range of pictures, postcards, envelopes and stamps and was enjoyed by the largest audience our club has mustered for many years. I particularly liked the imaginative way someone has written the address on the envelope shown. We have a full agenda for next year starting with New Zealand on 12th January. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the the month at 7pm for 7.30pm at the Seaford Constitutional Club. You are welcome to come along, or if you would like to find out more about the club visit our website at Seaford Stamp and Postcard Club: http://www.seaford-sussex. co.uk/sspc/ or from our club secretary David at david.manthorpe10@gmail.com. East Blatchington and St Peter’s Living Advent Calendar December 2021 This December, 24 households in the roads adjacent to St Peter’s Church will be taking part in a living advent calendar. Every day from 1st December a new ‘window’ will be opened in a house or garden in a prominent position that can be viewed from a pavement. This will culminate on the 24th December with a crib scene in St Peter’s Churchyard. Advent calendar organiser Lucy Stuart said ‘Last Christmas was a very difficult time for many people, and I know I was greatly cheered by Norton and Bishopstone’s living advent calendar, and I thought, why not bring this wonderful idea to East Blatchington and St Peter’s this year. The Rev’d Arwen Folkes, rector of St Peters and Bishopstone, was in agreement and everyone has been incredibly supportive.’

102

The Rev’d Arwen said: ‘We don’t yet know whether Christmas will be subject to restrictions, but learned last year that providing outdoor adventures is not only safe, but great fun! I am so looking forward to seeing the windows pop up and encourage others to follow the trail as it unfolds.’ The houses taking part are on Blatchington Hill, Chapel Close, and houses on Belgrave and Firle Road near to the church. A plan will be made available in St Peter’s Church, which is open to the public every day. All windows will be on display until 6th January (Epiphany). We hope Christmas lovers big and small will have great fun finding them all.

2021 – Living with dementia during the pandemic With the passing of time, we are beginning to see the lasting impact of the pandemic on the physical and mental health of older people. Age UK, the UK’s largest charity for older people, has recently issued a report looking into how people are feeling now society is opening up and we enter the winter period where the weather gets colder, and the nights draw in. The report concludes that while some older people had developed strategies to cope during the pandemic, many had experienced a heavy toll on their physical and mental health as they stayed at home to try and keep safe. Loneliness, lack of opportunity for socialising, loss of confidence and a physical deterioration, increasing the risk of falls, have all grown during the pandemic and lockdowns. When these are added to the existing impact of living with dementia, alongside other health challenges, it can be easy to become overwhelmed. However, it is important to look at the opportunity to develop a broader and more equitable service of care and health support for vulnerable people to ensure not only that they can maintain their current state of health, but also thrive and live a full and active life with this illness, beyond the impact of the pandemic. We have all seen the impact of the pandemic on care homes, but as we move to a longer-term relationship with the virus, it is clear that such care can also maintain the best aspects of independence, whilst avoiding the debilitating impact of isolation, loneliness and withdrawal that we have seen during Lockdown.

As a care service for individuals with dementia, we focus on maintaining mobility and fitness, as movement and exercise have a direct impact on health, whilst ensuring we maintain strength and balance, and so reduce the possibility of falls. Day-to-day activities can be as simple as direct, one to one conversation and hand-holding, so that people maintain contact with a community of support and interaction, without which we can all become susceptible to low mood, anxiety and challenging behaviours. At every point we treat our residents as no different from any one of us, with our quirks and interests; attitudes and viewpoints; skills and abilities and sense of community and fun as well as seeking peace and solitude when that is what soothes us. What works for any individual with low mood is attentive care and supportive time to re-engage with the world around us, works best for those that we care for at Clifden House. This is the method by which we will overcome the worst impacts of these trying times and move towards a New Year with opportunities to truly live a full and active life with dementia. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise everyone’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Last month’s competition was entitled An Artist’s Palette, and we were delighted by the quality and quantity of entries, some of which you can see here. Last month our meeting took the theme of Look! No Oasis and Other Techniques. In the drive to be greener and more environmentally friendly we are endeavouring to demonstrate techniques in flower arranging where it is not always essential to use floral foam and other methods, such as pin holders, flower roses, grids, glass pebbles, manipulated coloured wire and moss can be used. We believe it gave our members food for thought.

We do not meet in January but we have an exciting and innovative programme arranged for 2022. We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for the year are £30 and visitors are always very welcome at £5 on the door, which includes refreshments. See a model of a ‘model’ village at the Museum! It’s likely that most residents of Seaford have wandered through the ruins of the old Tidemills village on the beach towards Newhaven at one time or another. But only those with a finely tuned imagination would be able to make sense of the ruined walls, paths and trackways between the ponds and the shore, and appreciate the complexity of the original site. Around 150 years ago, Tidemills was a functioning village of more than 100 inhabitants, fully equipped with a kiln, laundry, mill and granary. The power of the tide was used to turn mill wheels and thence grind flour. The great storm of 1875 caused great damage to the village so exposed on the shoreline, and thousands of gallons of seawater and shingle were washed into the mill pools, and the windmill (used to lift sacks of grain in the store) was blown down. After the terrible storm damage, it was said that the flour ground in the mill tasted of seawater! The use of infinite and completely sustainable tidal power (so important now) was seen as outdated, and eventually the mill closed in 1883 then was demolished in

1901. Ex-workers and others continued to live in the cottages, although some were condemned in 1936 as they lacked any drainage or water, until the Second World War when the last of the buildings were demolished. As one of the Heritage week projects at the end of September this year, there was a recreation and celebration of the old Tidemills village on the beach towards Newhaven. And as part of the multi-media project – Bringing Tidemills Back To Life – local historian Charlie Grimble and local model-maker David Clarke carefully researched and constructed the most exquisite model of the village, including the cottages, the mill and the windmill. Even the Victorian glasshouse of mill owner Mr Catt can be seen. After the events of that weekend, we are delighted to say that the model arrived for permanent display in Seaford Museum. Seeing the model of the complete village and mill as it would have been in around 1866 allows visitors to the Museum to appreciate the size and complexity of the village, with far greater understanding than walking through the ruins on the beach. The Museum is also proud to display another of David’s exceptional models – this one is of the old Seaford gas works in Blatchington Road. We are increasing the opportunity to see this delightful model – and the rest of the Museum – by opening on Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 4pm right through the winter, as well as our usual opening hours of 11am to 4pm, on Saturdays and Sundays. So, please visit the Museum and find out more about our fascinating town and its surroundings. Our shop has some splendid gift ideas for Christmas, too. Photo: The exquisite model of Tidemills.

Martello Rotary For Martello Rotarians, emerging from COVID-19 has offered several opportunities for helping to support local charities through fundraising, and providing hands-on support for local environmental initiatives. The amazing Tide Mills Project event left a lasting impression on all who attended. A small team of Martello Rotarians, using their experience with Tavern in the Tent, provided a much-welcomed bar service for visitors throughout the project, through the generosity of the Long Man Brewery of Litlington. As a consequence, the bar profits will be going to support three local organisations: WOLO (We only Live Once), Lewes Youth Theatre Company (which through its director, Phil Rose, staged the entire event) and Chailey Heritage Foundation, an educational charity supporting the school for children and young people with complex neurodisabilities. Martello Rotary supports several local environmental projects. Commuters can enjoy the planters on Seaford Station, (which will be prepared for Christmas with Christmas trees made from recycled pallets). All who love a stroll through Seaford’s local green spaces will soon see the fruits of work done to enhance these, particularly at Princess Drive open space and bridleway, and the Last Wood and Meadow on the way out of Seaford towards High and Over. Longer-term work will see improvements to the open spaces at Normansal and Chalvington Fields, and The Ridings in Lexden Road. Our work with Trees for Seaford has been continuing over the last few months meeting via Zoom, and last week we had the first face-to-face meeting to discuss future operations, membership, training and events. In recent weeks we have helped carry out maintenance work on trees in Saltwood Road, Milberg Road and Chyngton Way. In November we start the season’s new planting programme and are considering Kingston Way and Tudor Close. We are finding that more local residents are taking an interest, and we are encouraging them to monitor trees in their road and to water them during dry periods.

There is still time to buy your 2022 Martello Rotary Calendar at the various events in Church Street and The Crouch over Christmas, and the proceeds for that go to support the local Youth Counselling Project, and the Newhaven Branch of the RNLI. Martello Rotarians joined forces with the Seaford Bonfire Society and Seaford Rotarians, to receive generous contributions from many who lined Seaford’s streets as part of the Seaford Bonfire Night on 23rd October. The buzz from that event was a real demonstration of Seaford’s determination to enjoy themselves together and experience the WOW factor, as they had done before during the Tidemills Project. Just after Christmas, Martello Rotary members are collecting Christmas Trees from Seaford to ensure they are properly recycled. If you haven’t booked the collection of the tree that will help you celebrate the Christmas season, then to do so, please use the link https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265345967629. It is not too late! The small fee for this service raises funds for local charities also. And if that is not enough, we are already planning our 2022 programme of activities including appearances of the Tavern in the Tent at two Bishopstone events, plus Motor Fest and Armed Services Day and a 2022 half marathon. Martello Rotarians are keen to welcome any new recruits that can provide the creative ideas and energy to support local charities. If the idea of committing to Martello Rotary does not suit your present availability of time, think about becoming an Associate Member. To find out more email membership@martellorotary. org.uk.

from. Landfill is bad because as the tree decomposes it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Chipping is much better, and many local authorities, including Lewes, now have arrangements for Christmas tree disposal through chipping.

The majority of real Christmas trees purchased in the UK are in fact grown as a horticultural crop, not felled from pre-existing forests. These real trees have a lower carbon footprint than artificial trees, which would need to be re-used for at least ten years to reduce their environmental impact. According to experts at the ‘Carbon Trust,’ how you dispose of your tree after Christmas is much more significant than where it comes TO D

Of course the best solution is to have a living tree that can be re-used, but this can bring its own problems. I bought a potted Norway spruce a few years ago that is now too big and heavy to bring indoors, it really needs a Norwegian forest! Happy Christmas.

✓ Plant a tree: October – March is

planting season. Plant to the same depth as the pot and stake to provide support while the tree establishes itself. Mulch to keep soil moist. ✓ Plant Amaryllis bulbs in pots that are just big enough, leaving the top third of the bulb exposed. Keep warm and water sparingly until the flower stem starts to grow. ✓ Manure the veg plot, leaving one area unmanured for next year’s root crops.

WHAT

On 2nd December, the Norwegian gifted Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree will be lit, with the Salvation Army singing carols beneath its boughs. Add a few snow flakes and you have a perfect Christmas scene. But hold on, should we be chopping down trees for Christmas?

PPLANT A TREE

Trees are very much in the news at the moment, from the COP26 deforestation agreement, to ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) – Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.’ Her Majesty has extensive acreage for tree planting, but choosing a tree for the average garden can be very tricky. This is definitely a question of ‘right tree, right place,’ otherwise you could have big problems in the future with shading and disgruntled neighbours. You must also consider the affects of a windy coastal climate, which could rule out trees with delicate foliage like acers. The RHS recommends the following trees for smaller gardens as they provide multi-seasonal interest: Acer griseum, Amelanchier lamarckii ‘Ballerina,’ Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia,’ Malus sylvestris (crab apple), Prunus Serrulata ‘Amanogawa,’ and Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock.’ However, it’s best to do some homework and seek advice from a nursery or garden centre in order to get the perfect match for your garden space. No space? Go to queensgreencanopy.org to gift a tree in Memoriam, in Celebration, or for Schools and Deprived Urban Areas across the UK. The National Trust also has a ‘Plant a Tree’ scheme.

Remember all those 1000-piece fiendish jigsaws we spread on the dining table during the lockdowns, all blue sky and green grass? Well, Seaford Community Garden has its own ceramic puzzle, made by some of the original garden volunteers many years ago. They used their own hand prints to create a large and colourful mosaic which was displayed on the wall of the classroom but sadly, a couple of years ago it was almost destroyed when a storm blew it down. Ann and Veronica, helped by husband Phil and Brian, have accepted the challenge of piecing it together again. Failing that, they would like to recreate a corner of it – ideally the one depicting the hand of one of our longest-serving volunteers, Mike. At least they will all be cosy in the poly tunnel working to a picture that Katie found of it, scaled up and printed. Ann said: ‘It will be a labour of love but we’ll do it.’ Back outside in our beautiful garden at the Crouch, this late in the year there is still colour. At the beginning of November autumn was in full glory, with even the leaves swept up and put in the compost bin in a mass of glossy oranges and browns. Passion fruits on an arbour were glowing amber and the remaining apples promised mellow fruitfulness. The colours of delicately white-tipped bright yellow bidens were redolent of spring rather than autumn and contrasted zestfully with the rich purple of Salvia ‘Amistad’. Another star

112

of the Mediterranean area was an abutilon, it’s bell flower a muted crimson. Roses were still flowering in abundance in pinks, creams and yellows – come on someone, please identify their varieties for us… Of course all this beauty takes work, and new volunteer Neill was set to work hoeing a veg bed while another newbie, Amy, was being shown around, her tour taking in all the separate and labelled garden areas, from Dry to Shady and lots more in between, Maggie’s sales table, the children’s garden, the shed, the bug hotel and the wildlife pond for starters. While the garden is open each Wednesday morning, it does welcome other groups by private arrangement from time to time, such as Charlie Bears nursery, and we are delighted that the lifting of restrictions allows them to come back and learn about gardening, and the joys of sowing and planting. The garden is run entirely by volunteers, led by a committee. Allison has just stepped down from her role as chair after 3½ years and Phil has taken over. ‘Will he be making changes?’ we asked. ‘No,’ he said, ‘continuity is my watchword and we’ve got a very good system here.’ On the agenda for winter is repainting the classroom, so a big vote of thanks to Brewers who have supplied the paint along with varnish for the floor. ‘We’re in a position to do it when the weather’s good now that we have everything at our disposal,’ he said. And when it’s not there’s always that ceramic jigsaw to work on… We are opening on Saturday 4th December from 11.30am until 2.30pm as part of Seaford Magic. Make sure you add it to your diary! Merry Christmas from the garden team

On the Verge

Last month we talked about how the On the Verge is helping to connect people and wildlife in our green corridors. Some of our green spaces looked wonderful this year! Beautiful pollinator mixes in Crouch Gardens and Micklefield Park, bees and butterflies on the longer grass in the slopes in the Salts, a chorus of grasshoppers on Southdown Corner, and a whole array of plants, insects, birds and more, in the fields near the ‘Covers’ in College Road, to name just a few. Seaford individuals and residents’ groups are starting to care for and ‘rewild’ their local green spaces and gardens, as even the tiniest space can be a haven for wildlife. We’ve been able to connect people so they can share ideas, enthusiasm, seeds and plants. If you’d like support in rewilding your green space or garden, please get in touch and pledge your ‘metre square for wildlife’. We worked with Buglife to encourage people to monitor the number of pollinators in Seaford so we can measure whether our efforts will make a real difference. We have started detailed wildflower surveys, and started to analyse this data, to better understand the value of our green spaces, and improvements that

would help biodiversity. Following one survey we’re applying to get the Edinburgh Road wildlife verges extended to the whole road, and to improve the variety of plants in the bank at the top. In our Saltwood Road pilot ‘Nature Street’, residents were recently involved with raking grass cuttings away and planting yellow rattle (which weakens the grass and increases the number of wildflowers in the verges), and planting bulbs which provide nectar for bees early in the year. In the Maurice Road ‘Nature Street’, local residents themselves took all the initiatives, including asking neighbours to leave their verges unmown, carrying out a very detailed and enlightening verge survey, and writing leaflets. Their new ‘botany’ group now has plans to try and get neighbouring streets on board too. We plan to extend the pilot schemes in coming years – could your street be our next Nature Street? We are a friendly bunch, so if you are still sitting on that verge, do take a step in our direction, and come along to our meetings and events. Maybe you can help by talking to your neighbours about verges and growing wildlife-friendly plants in their garden. They could join Seaford residents who together have pledged over 9,000 square metres of their gardens to be wildlife friendly! With your help we really are on the verge of great change! https://www.seafuture.org/a-metre-square-for-wildlife/ https://www.seafuture.org/on-the-verge/ Photos from top: Botanist Sarah takes a close look at one of the clovers in the Pump field; Cheery flowers planted by residents in nearby Millberg Road; Insect counting and identification at the Salts.

Driftwood Transformed During 2021, after over 10 years of opening my garden, Driftwood, I began to realise it was more of a chore, than something enjoyable, to maintain the plot for visitors, especially from the watering perspective. With so many containers of summer annuals, the task could take in excess of five hours from start to finish, if watering the whole plot at once. I therefore decided to look at a way of maintaining interest in the garden, whilst drastically reducing the number of containers. At last count there were over 300 across the garden as a whole, with a heavy concentration on the back patio. Back in March, I conceived the idea to create a sunken garden at the rear of the house by digging out the area on the left side of the garden and creating a Mediterranean area with drought, tolerant plants and shrubs and collection of succulents. While doing this, the raised wooden beds alongside the rear of the house and around the central steps were rotting, so a decision was taken to remove them as well and create more brick/old railway sleepers edged features. The small patio by the green folly door was extended to meet the rear of the dug-out area which is secured, unusually, with 50 old railway sleepers on end. At the onset, a follower on Twitter posted ‘the destructive bit is terrifying – but then comes the creative bit.’ How very true those words really are. So, for 11 days in October, local landscaper, Dan Smith and his company, Ace Of Spades, worked their magic on my own design ideas to create an amazing space, bordered by upturned old railway sleepers. Dan navigated a mini digger through the left side of the house and excavated four skips of chalk and debris, creating the new sunken garden area. I felt so sorry for his team as they then had to wheelbarrow all the debris down the steep drive to the waiting skips. More importantly, they then had to carry the 50 railway sleepers up the drive too. The completed space already looks amazing but will not show its true potential until

116

next Spring, when it will be dressed with my large collection of succulents. Those that are interested can view the whole process from start to finish, including daily videos, on the garden development page of my website. Landscaper Dan said: ‘Thanks Geoff, hope you enjoy the new area as much as we did building it. It looks amazing – can’t wait to see it in its full glory in spring time.’ A Facebook visitor and follower, Sacha Hubbard, posted on social media, ‘Anyone who hasn’t seen Driftwood but has read your posts, might think you’re Mr Manyacres! What you do with an average size modern garden plot is simply astonishing. I think a “How I did it” book about your garden could be inspirational and valuable to so many people who don’t have a large garden but want to do something interesting with a relatively small space. Some garden publisher is missing a trick here.’ A friend suggested I bury a time capsule beneath the new patio. Spurred on by the idea, I purchased a capsule and set about asking people on social media what I should include inside. There is no date set to open it – it will be discovered whenever anyone changes the garden, at some point in the future! These are some of the items that made the final selection: Digital memory stick with images of garden, media and award coverage, charity recognition, achievements, cake recipes, garden visitors and pdf copy of my book about the garden; current monetary coinage; Covid-19 test kit and Frida Kahlo face mask;
