Seaford Christmas Magic – Lighting up the Festive Season! Welcome back to the festive spectacular that is Seaford Christmas Magic! Saturday 5th December 10am – 7pm and later! This year’s event improves upon 2014, with lots more going on and a full range of attractions to provide a whole day of shopping, entertainment and festive cheer! From 9am onwards the shops will be starting to open their doors warming up nicely to the start of the main event. From 10am the main event starts; the stalls will be open for trading and the Main Stage kicks off with the Concentus Choir. There are hourly Story times at Seaford Library again this year, so you can take a break for some peace and quiet with the kids between the main performances on the Main Stage. Alternatively, if you like the idea of staying in the middle of things, there are a few smaller sets from performers on the Main Stage on each half hour, including a Puppet Show. Even better, if you do happen to miss out on any performances on the main stage then look out for the Buskers Corners, in various locations around the town. Market Stalls will be providing you with something a little different, while your local Seaford retailers are keen to see you on the day, with so much choice available in Seaford town, make sure you visit the shops to see what they have on offer, you will NOT be disappointed. Don’t forget to include a walk around all of the side streets to take it all in. Not only on Broad Street, there’s plenty of variety on Clinton Place, Dane Road, Church Street, Place Lane, Sutton Road and High Street. With some of the finest independent retailers in the area ranging from Toys to Hardware, from Tech to Christmas Trees and Fencing, Eyecare and even Ink; there is something for everyone, not to mention the exceptional eateries, pubs and restaurants providing you with some mouth-watering options throughout the day. Why not plan to make an evening of it too, with a visit to one of the pubs or restaurants? Look out for the event programme – this gives you a rundown of the main event features, and you can pick up a copy from Seaford TIC and from a number of retailers
4
around the town. They will also be coming out to schools and nurseries. Then there are the website, Facebook and Twitter pages helping you keep up to date on any of the little changes or extras; and there will be public announcements throughout the day over the PA to keep you updated and giving you some ideas on what to look out for. Getting to and from the event is made that little bit easier with the CTLA providing Bus Services on a ‘Round town’ bus route, which picks up from existing stops and drops you on Dane Road and Saxon Lane close to the action Visit www.ctla.or.uk for the route and Timetable. There is seafront parking available for park and ride if you do struggle to find a space. Then for one day only, the Pay and Display Parking has been suspended so there’s free parking for all. There are Street Performers, Princesses and Fire Breathers, so don’t forget to take some time to soak up the atmosphere – watch out for that photo opportunity with one of the magical characters there on the day! Don’t forget to visit St Leonards Hall between 10am and 4pm for Lantern Making, and family fun with ‘Seaford Family Focus Group’ and ‘Seaford Schools Together’ this will lead up to the Lantern Parade meeting at around 4.45pm, setting off around 5pm and ending with more music and the Christmas Lights Switch On. It doesn’t end there, with entertainment going on into the evening. There will be a Fire Show and a Funk Band just about the same time that some of the younger ones can make their way to the Funfair on Church Street. If you’d like, Seaford Community Cinema will be showing the delightful PADDINGTON movie from 6.30pm at The Barn Theatre on Saxon Lane. This event would not be the same without the sponsors; for information about the valuable Christmas Magic supporters visit the webpage where you will find links to their websites and information about their services. Watch out for updates; visit one of the pages below and listen out for more information; there is more planning going on so watch this space... www.seafordxmasmagic.uk www.facebook.com/seafordchristmasmagic www.twitter.com/seafordmagic

Twinning twice remembered in Seaford A ceremony took place recently (Thursday 15th October) at Seaford Museum which means the Town’s international civic links with Bönningstedt in Germany are twice commemorated on the seafront. Seaford Town Mayor, Cllr Dave Argent, accepted the invitation from the Town’s legendary Town Crier, Peter White, to formally unveil the original twinning plaque, which has been restored by Museum volunteers and which now overlooks the Martello Tower moat from one of the curtain walls. “We were delighted to become Custodians of the original plaque when it was replaced by a new one, which recognises the 30 years of twinning between Seaford and Bönningstedt,” said Museum Vice-Chairman,

David Swaysland. “Our volunteers carefully cleaned and repainted the sign to restore it to its original splendour and we are proud to have it displayed on the outside of our Museum, where it can be seen by passersby on the promenade,” he added. Seaford was officially twinned with Bönningstedt in 1984, after several years of informal discussion
between the civic leaders of the two towns. That event was commemorated in May 1993 when a generous anonymous donation allowed the then Friends of Bönningstedt, which is now the Seaford Twinning Association (STA), to provide the original plaque. “At the time Bönningstedt was also twinned with Crivitz, which was in the GDR, (East Germany) and Rachoni, which is a holiday resort on one of the Greek Islands,” explained Peter White, who is also the official Town Crier for Bönningstedt and Crivitz, as well as Chairman of STA, “so it seemed only sensible for Seaford to regard Crivitz and Rachoni as ‘friendship towns’ and to develop those further links. We still have good contact with Crivitz, but little contact with Rachoni,” he added. The new plaque which marks the 30 years of friendship and reconciliation, was unveiled at Bönningstedt Promenade in Seaford in June 2015 by the Mayors of Seaford, Bönningstedt and Crivitz and includes the dedication “Lest We Forget”. The unveiling of the restored plaque means this important international civic link is now commemorated twice along our popular seafront: with the new plaque taking pride of place at Bönningstedt Promenade to the west of the town centre, and the original at the Museum towards the east,” said David Swaysland. Rotary Club of Seaford
Last Boot Fair of the Year
Below are just a few of the comments made by people who were at the Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair on Sunday 4th October, whether buying, selling, organising, or all three! It really was a wonderful spectacle to see so many cars with so many and varied goods and chattels for sale to so many browsers, bargain seekers, and all with plenty of fun! What a difference a day makes! Yesterday we were blessed with a sunny morning and 63 hopeful sellers. Another great Boot Fair and a very big thank you to all involved. I am sorry I could not be with you but I was there in spirit. Brilliant result and I for one have enjoyed every minute of it. Great way to interact with the public and enhance Rotary’s profile!
the aim of greater independence. A sensory garden has been constructed for people to experience the touch and smells of an outside space. The team at the activity centre recently had a dream to equip a room which could be used all year, with a range of sensory experiences for people with sight loss and disabilities. They combined two rooms to free some space to allow the plan to happen. The Rotary Club of Seaford discovered this great idea and decided it was a wonderful opportunity to fund the whole plan. “We provide grants for many things but rarely can we fund a whole project and bring such an immediate benefit to a community,” said Steven Willox, Community Services Chairman. “The Club was able to join a coffee morning at The Bradbury Centre to present a cheque to cover the work required and we are looking forward to visiting once the work is complete.” Photos from top: L to R Vice President Bill Pierce, Manager Carol Somers, and Community Services Chairman Steven Willox, the Boot, Cradft and Produce Fair.
Rotary Club of Seaford
Treasurer Geoff Lowles (right in the photo with his fetching tabard) soon came up with some figures. The proceeds raised by the last Fair of the year came to £765.65. The proceeds for all the Fairs this year were a staggering £4,108.05, which will be used to help our charities and worthy causes.

Sponsored Walking Bus
On Sunday 11th October, a Sponsored Walking Bus took place to raise funds for CTLA, the only Community Transport charity of its kind covering the Havens coastal strip and the rest of the Lewes District. The walkers included Lewes MP, Maria Caulfield, and the Mayors of the Havens Towns – Cllr Wayne Botting (Telscombe), Cllr Robert Robertson (Peacehaven), Cllr Steve Saunders (Newhaven) and Cllr Dave Argent (Seaford) as well as staff, supporters and volunteers from the charity. They walked 8 miles from Seaford to Telscombe Cliffs.

Now I realise what loneliness and isolation might do to people who find themselves in my situation – unable to drive and reliant on others for shopping, doctors’ appointments and a social life. I urge people to support CTLA in any way they can and help people who need the accessible minibuses as their only way to the outside world.” To sponsor Ray and the other participants of the Walking Bus go to: www.localgiving.com/walkingbus To find out more about CTLA go to : www.ctla.org.uk
The photo shows a gentleman called Ray Woolven from Peacehaven. Ray is 70 years old. Three months ago he had a massive heart attack that nearly claimed his life. He can no longer drive or walk for longer than 5 minutes as only 25% of his heart is functioning. On Sunday he walked for a few minutes with the sponsored walking bus (assisted by his grandson, Danny, dressed as Spiderman!), because he knows too many people like himself. CTLA Community Transport charity is a life-line. For people like Ray, CTLA is the only way to reach the outside world and essential services. “I had to do what I could,” said Ray “I have always been active and have been able to just get in my car and

Choosing wine can be a bit of a minefield, and it’s all too easy to get it wrong. Follow our cheat’s guide to creating the perfect match. Fish course – Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require wellbodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well. Spicy dishes – You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes.
complement 10:33
Juicy red meat – Bring out a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon. Turkey – Choose a full-flavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Veggie main – There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese course – There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. Have fun with your choices and enjoy! By Kate Duggan Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Seaford Evening Flower Club
For the last 35 years Seaford has been home to the Seaford Evening Flower Club. The club is affiliated to NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. This is part of a world wide organisation. Seaford Evening Flower Club celebrated its coral (35 years) anniversary in April 2015. With 36 members we are not a large club, but we are a busy active one. We hold monthly meetings which have a varied format, including demonstrations, workshops, talks and competitions. Demonstrators are very talented and workshops are held to help members learn different techniques and styles of flower arranging. Competitions are held every club night for members. There are five different classes from Novice to Challenge, so everyone can have a go. We have a busy

schedule of fund raising for the club and our nominated charity this year is the St James’ Trust. We support local churches by arranging the flowers for their flower festivals and we also enter flower arranging shows throughout Sussex. In the past have arranged flowers for Charleston Manor and Nymans. We provide a warm welcome to any one who wishes to join us, no experience is needed – just a love of flowers. We meet the first Thursday of each month at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Seaford. Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm. Why not come along and give us a try. Your first night, come as a visitor for FREE. For further information contact Marian Burgess on 01273 515544. l
Owls Out and About
Owls Out and About was formed in April 2012 by John and Linda Allen, Helen Newing and Pam Brewer. We are all private owl owners with many years’ experience between us. We take our birds to a number of events to help increase public awareness of these beautiful birds while raising money for good causes. We have 14 birds between us, some native and some rarer foreign species. The oldest being an Indian Eagle owl and the youngest an Asian Brown Wood Owl – others include Barn Owls, Tawny Owls, Long Eared Owl, Southern White Faced Scops Owl, Canadian Grey Owl, Spotted Eagle Owl and more. All our owls are bred in this country by specialist breeders, and are bought by us at approximately 3 weeks of age and hand reared. The birds live in individual aviaries in our gardens and are fed as natural a diet as possible – including rabbits, mice and cockerel chicks, all of which are bought frozen from a specialist animal food supplier. Owls and About is not a business or bird center, we keep our birds as a hobby and enjoy giving people a chance to meet the birds, ask questions take pictures, and if they wish, to handle the birds on a glove provided by us. Owls Out and About can be contacted on 01273 516192, 07704 560970, 01273 700993, 07824 885606 or email: owlsoutandabout@hotmail.co.uk for further details or visit: www.owlsoutandabout.co.uk

CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS September 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of the formation of the Choir, and ‘Concentus Sings Christmas’ in Seaford is their first concert of this celebratory year. Concentus was born in 2005 when an Adult Education class, tutored by Adrian White, evolved to form the embryo of the present Choir. Concentus Chorale, as it was then called, started with 45 people, singing their first concert in that December. Since then the Choir has grown, with a membership of 100 singers. Adrian White, Director of Music, set the tone of the choir from its inception – positive, welcoming, supportive, with a willingness to work hard to achieve ever higher choral standards. He continues to instill these qualities today, with humour, direction and just the right touch of discipline. The Choir gradually expanded its activities, as it added Summer and Christmas Concerts in Seaford and Eastbourne, ‘Sing-a-longs’, carol singing in the streets and the Arndale Centre, and singing at Eastbourne’s bandstand. They have sung, by invitation, at numerous local events, and in France and Germany, and now exchange visits with a German choir. This year they were awarded the Eastbourne Achievers Award for the Best Community Group of the Year, and were invited to sing to departing travelers when the ‘Orient Express’ visited Eastbourne. The list of Concentus’ achievements stretches on! Over the 10 years of the Choir’s existence, Concentus has supported the charity ‘JPK Project’ in its plans to build independent-living accommodation for people with learning difficulties from local areas who need this support. The Choir has raised over £22, 000 for them so far.

For the first time, Concentus will be singing at Seaford’s ‘Christmas Magic’, on Saturday, 5th December, at 10am. Come and hear them sing, and get a taste of the treats in store at ‘Concentus Sings Christmas’ on the following Saturday. This year’s ‘Concentus Sings Christmas’ is a real celebration of Christmas, with traditional music as well as modern favourites. Mozart, Handel, Purcell, Rutter, Englebert Humperdinck (1854-1921 ), Elton John are featured, as well as popular pieces from lesser known composers. Concentus is proud of the vocal quality of its members, and the Concert includes offerings from soloists and groups drawn from the main Choir. You may discover that the music, quite subtly, touches on the emotions evoked by Christmas: you may hear excitement, nostalgia, thanksgiving, reverence, joy, humour, love, exasperation...You’ll have to come and hear, to see how many feelings you can experience! There will also be several well-loved carols for the audience to sing with the Choir. The Choir will be ably accompanied by Colin Hughes, piano, and John Ross, organ. All in all a joyous, moving event just right to kick-start your own special Christmas! If all of this sounds exciting to you, then why not think about becoming a choir member yourself? You could be singing in the Summer Concert, and joining in all the 10th Anniversary social events the Choir is planning. You will find a friendly, welcoming group, and you don’t need to read music to join. Pick up a leaflet at the Concert, or ring Evelyn on 01323 643358. The Choir is looking forward to welcoming to the Concert the winners of our free ticket draw. You could be a winner for the next Concert – just by filling in the very short exit survey in your programme, and it will only take you a few seconds! The ‘Concentus Sings Christmas’ Concert is being performed on Saturday, 12th December, at St. Leonard’s Church, Church Street, Seaford, at 4pm and again on 19th December in Eastbourne at St Saviour’s Church, South Street, Eastbourne, at 4pm. Information about ticket prices and sources for both Concerts can be found on the advertisement on the oposite page. www.concentus-sings.com Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Seaford’s Little Flower Shop Gets Bigger! Church Lane Flowers founder, Helen Thomas, had an unusual start in the business of floristry; a few vintage flower vases filled with fresh blooms and set out in the lane in front of her Seaford home proved popular with the locals. The flowers sold out that weekend and the next, and the little flower stand in Church Lane soon became a regular feature. Despite the success of this initial venture, Helen never imagined that six years after she sold those first few bunches the business would have grown in the way that it has. The shop is still in the lane but is now inside the building, and houses not just a wonderful array of fresh and beautiful flowers but also vases and handcrafted candles from Denmark, vintage items sourced by Helen herself, a selection of books and a range of cards. Open six days a week for the last year or so and busier than ever, Helen has also added a member of staff and recently acquired a workshop nearby, both necessary to
deal with the ever-growing number of weddings, funerals and events in the order books. The last year has also seen a number of other exciting developments. Over the summer, the first ever Church Lane Flowers workshop ran, with a small group receiving tuition from Helen and producing a beautiful hand-tied bouquet each; more are planned for 2016. In May, the team provided the florals for a styled wedding shoot at Photography Farm, an innovative school for wedding photographers, and subsequently collaborated with acclaimed photographer Lisa Devlin on a shoot in Brighton; the results will be published in the January issue of Rock ’n’ Roll Bride. It’s all a far cry from the humble beginnings of Church Lane Flower,s but one thing remains constant; Helen insists that every bloom that leaves the shop is as fresh as it can be, to ensure that her customers can enjoy the flowers she loves for the longest possible time. For her, it’s still all about the flowers, but now there are a lot more of them!

Christmas Hangover Arts@thecrypt Church Street, Seaford 5th - 8th and 10th - 13th December Last Minute Artists, the group which stages the popular pop-up exhibitions at the arts@thecrypt gallery in Church Street, has got itself so together this year that it is putting on not one but two shows, hence the name Christmas Hangover. Running back-to-back, the main spaces will feature a total of 30 artists, with 15 at the first show, and another 15 at the second, so expect fizzing bubbles of colour and form. With Christmas in mind, the work will be affordable, and as well as watercolours, acrylics and other wall-hung media in a variety of styles, the exhibitions will include sculpture by the likes of Jim Pilston, jewellery by the Silver Sisters and others, lanterns, and work by Crypt newcomers too, such as unusual flower paintings by Sally-Mae Joseph. And if you haven’t bought your cards yet, or are looking for individual special cards for special people, then several of the artists will be providing these too. The Undercroft will belong to Last Minute Artists’ founders Bill Bovington, Bill Savidge, Geraldine Edmonds, Lynn Gould, Nigel Goss, Sue Casebourne and Sarah Gregson, most of whom will be selling work ranging from cards to wall art. Admission is free and the gallery will be open from 10am until 4.30pm each day from 5th - 8th December and 10th - 13th December. Mince pies and mulled wine will also be served. Arts@thecrypt will be closed on 9th December to make way for the second colourful show. Image by Sally-Mae Joseph.

HAVE YOURSELF A CRAFTY LITTLE CHRISTMAS Perhaps at Christmas, more than any other time of the year, handmade cards and gifts evoke, a sense of tradition, and timeless handicraft skills can be used in so many ways to add to the occasion. And it doesn’t have to end there. Homemade indoor and outdoor decorations, table centres, gift boxes, wrapping papers and even simple trinkets and toys can all be created or packaged from everyday items and raw materials, a few basic tools and accessories – and a generous sprinkling of imagination. But what if you’re no Kirstie Allsop or Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen? Don’t despair because the internet is full of inspirational and clever ideas. Sites such as Pinterest, that describes itself as a “catalogue of ideas” rather than a social networking site is a great starting point. Search some more and you’ll discover websites from all over the world dedicated to seasonal handicrafts as well how to make

Seaford Voices is a gem at the heart of Seaford. The group was formed three years ago and has grown naturally and beautifully into a choir at the centre of the community, where people come together and sing for the pure joy of it. There is no accompaniment, no music to read, just our voices, learning by ear and marvelling at the sound we create (a Natural Voices approach). We sing in a circle so that we can hear ourselves and each other. The notes travel around it, as do the smiles and the laughter. There are many ‘tingle factor’ moments too! One singer remarked: ‘Where so much communication these days is on a superficial level, it is lovely to get together with people and simply sing.’ Monica, our leader, is an inspiring, skilful and passionate teacher, whose enjoyment of singing is infectious and who loves to see the smiles of amazement when people realise that, they can not only sing, but actually help to create wonderful harmony. Songs are collected from all over the world and include the rich harmonies of Georgian music, the infectious rhythms of Africa and the lilting melodies of our own English and Celtic traditions, with the occasional jazzy number thrown in! There is no audition for Seaford Voices, though being able to sing in tune is a help! Many of our members thought they couldn’t sing before they joined and were pleasantly surprised. Singing is good for you! As well as sounding beautiful, it expands the lungs and frees you from stress, and there’s something about singing in a choir that gives us a great sense of belonging. We meet on Fridays from 2pm until 3pm at St Peter’s Church Hall, East Blatchington, and enjoy an interlude of laughter, fun and of course, singing. New members are always welcome, particularly male voices, to enhance the range of parts that can be sung. For more information contact Monica on 07788 166173 or email her on monmaloney@googlemail.com. Contributed by group members

Talkin’ Turkey
by Julian O’Vegetables
Christmas comes but once a year and seems to get earlier each time. Personally, the festive season hasn’t arrived until I’ve heard a radio station play ‘Fairy Tale of New York’ by the Pogues and the late, great, Kirsty McColl. Christmas also comes with Turkeys, usually the size of adolescent Ostriches and don’t get me started about sprouts. In the days after Boxing day, you will be faced with that ‘bin or brunch’ conundrum. You’ve spent a small fortune on an enormous bird but you are fed up to the back teeth of the taste and sight of the thing – what to do with the leftovers? Well, here’s a simple recipe for an Asian inspired turkey dish that will make the most of what’s left. For an accompaniment, a savoury rice dish will go down very well and one of the forty rice dishes in Rice is Nice... Hmmm by my mate Eddie Martin (advert right), would be ideal.
Asian Inspired Turkey
Serves 4: Cut half a kilo of white and dark meat into small chunks. Use just the white meat if you must, but I find the contrast of colour and texture nice. White turkey meat also tends to be too dry after a day or two. The rest of the ingredients: 6 tablespoons hoisin sauce; 4 tablespoons barbecue sauce; 1 tablespoon minced fresh root ginger; 1 tablespoon sesame oil; salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste; 3 spring onions, diced.
PAM-A-CAKE
FOR ALL YOUR SPECIAL OCCASIONS
WEDDING & CELEBRATION CAKES DESIGNED TO ORDER
Method
In a large saucepan over medium heat, whisk together hoisin sauce, barbecue sauce, ginger and sesame oil. Mix in the turkey, salt, pepper and spring onions, gently tossing until all ingredients are well blended. Cook for 10 minutes. Serve immediately. If you want to get even more value out of the thing after this, you can simmer the bones and remaining scraps with onions and root vegetables for a nourishing broth which you can freeze, reheat in the Spring, and eat while you think of Christmas past. Happy Christmas and enjoy! Julian O’Vegetables is an alter ego of Alan Lindsay

Speed Reduction Proposed for A259 Buckle Bypass Seaford Town Council has received notification from the Communities, Economy and Transport Department of East Sussex County Council, confirming that as part of their review of rural speed limits, it is proposed to reduce the existing National speed limit to 50mph on the A259 Buckle Bypass. The proposed speed limit will incorporate a number of junctions, including Bishopstone Road, Marine Parade and Hill Rise. The extent of this proposal is indicated on the plan below. As part of the scheme, East Sussex County Council will also be reviewing the existing signs and road markings between Seaford and the Denton Roundabout and implementing improvements where appropriate.
this area was just recently highlighted by the Council as a priority to be sought from the County Council for the benefit of pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists alike attempting to travel safely on this busy and fast-paced stretch of road. A timescale for the proposed scheme is not yet known but is expected to be released by East Sussex County Council in due course.
Seaford Town Council’s Planning & Highways Committee members welcomed this news. A speed reduction in

Who’s Who In Seaford?
Gabrielle Edwards, Seaford Young Mayor
Gabrielle is 15 years old and has lived in Seaford all her life. She has been Seaford Young Mayor since April this year. She is also a member of Seaford Musical Juniors and attends Nikki Bond School of Dance. She has recently become a member of Seaford Youth Forum. She attends Seaford Head School and has two older sisters, a younger brother, a 5-month-old niece, 3 Yorkshire Terriers and a cat! What does your position/role involve? I attend many different community events and I also raise money for my chosen charity, Teddy Treats Children’s charity. What do you most enjoy about your role? I am proud to represent the youth of the town and really enjoy meeting new people and chatting to adults and children from all walks of life. What is your favourite piece of music? I don’t have a particular preference of music as my playlist goes from punk rock music to Disney movie soundtracks! What is your favourite film? The Longest Ride. What book are you reading at the moment? I am reading an autobiography by Carrie Hope Fletcher and she is my favourite youtuber. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford? I like going to the Crouch Gardens when its warm to read as its peaceful and quiet. How would you spend a million pounds? I want to go to New York and study Theatre at New York University, so I would spend it on that and if I were to be in a Broadway show I’d pay for my family to come see me! What words or phrases do you most overuse? “that’ll do Donkey, that’ll do...” Which living person do you most admire? I recently met a 87-year-old man who had just moved to Seaford, and he said to follow my dreams and take advantage of the education that I have because when he was my age he never got the opportunity. I don’t know this man’s name but I admire him. What is your greatest fear? No Wifi. What is your favourite smell? The smell of a chocolate shop. What makes you sad? When I realise I’ve eaten all my food. What is your idea of perfect happiness? To have my name in lights on Broadway!! What would your motto be? Hakuna Matata, which means no worries. Anything else you may like to include? My favourite sound is my baby niece sneezing and laughing!

Seaford Kurlers Hello Everyone. More ramblings from me on behalf of Seaford Kurlers. Are you all ready for whatever this winter throws at us? Just keep the ice and snow away. We have now had our annual AGM and have elected a new committee. That’s good because different minds looking at the way the club is run can often be an advantage. One of our earliest serving members, Greg Cooper, (left) celebrated his 60th Birthday with a card and chocolates from the club. Greg lives under the umbrella of the charity SeeAbility and is a very committed kurler. At the 2015 meeting we also counted votes for the 2015 winner of the Bob Matthews Achievement Cup (top right). The cup is voted for by club members. The members have to decide who has made
a difference for the better for the club or has achieved something for themselves. The 2015 winner of the cup is GERALD MCINALLY. Sadly Gerald was not able to be at the AGM to be presented with his keepsake cup. The cup is in memory of one of the founders of the club, namely Bob Matthews. Together with his wife Sheila, they began the club back in 2006. It is a sport where people with disabilities of any kind, can still compete without being at a disadvantage. Bob was greatly challenged in many ways from a health point of view. This did not stop him from striving to have as full an active life as he could and to encourage others to do the same. The club was initially a group within the Seaford Group of ESDA. We eventually formed our own ESDA group of Seaford Kurlers. As an ESDA group, we benefit from all the services that ESDA provide for people with disabilities and their families. Their contact is Eastbourne 01323 514500. The address is 1 Faraday Close, Eastbourne, BN22 9BH. Our next function this year is our annual Christmas Lunch at The Moorings, Pevensey. This will be the third time that we have held the lunch there. Before we close for the Christmas break we will have our traditional hot mince pies on the last Tuesday 15th December. We will return in the New Year on Tuesday 5th January, 2016.

Winter cheer for French Twinners: Raising our glasses to new links and getting a taste for it! During the winter months we will be offering members, their families and friends a number of small social activities such as wine tastings, quizzes or films. Hopefully this will keep us all in contact, give us an opportunity to get to know each other better and share ideas for future events. Any ideas and offers to hold a small get together would be great! Also you will be welcome to meet us if you are considering membership. (Phone 01323 890373 for information). Our first offering will be a wine tasting of the high quality wines of the Cerons Appellation (pronounced Seronz). So why is this wine in particular so special for our twinning group? Well, on our last twinning weekend in France, we were introduced to the Mayor of Cerons and a group of wine growers from his village during the commemoration of the battle fought by the British soldiers against Rommel’s forces around Veules-les-Roses. We were surprised to find that Veules is also twinned with the small wine growing village of Cerons (photo) near Bordeaux. All the wine for our special weekend was brought from Cerons for us to enjoy and it was superb. The reason for this unusual Twinning is that during the battle an armed merchant ship called Cerons was attempting to take off some 1500 British and French soldiers who, with their backs to the sea, were surrounded and heavily outnumbered. The ship approached as close as possible to the beach and soldiers began to board, but a combination of the additional weight and the receding tide caused the ship to become stuck fast with no hope of escape. It became target practise for the enemy guns, and to prevent further casualties the troops left the ship and made their way ashore into captivity. Under a blaze of artillery the Cerons soon sank and remained under water, except for a small part of its superstructure which was sometimes visible at low water, for the next 60 years. One day, a citizen of Veules happened to spot a bottle of wine bearing the name Cerons on a supermarket shelf and realised the significance of the connection to June 1940. A movement was started with the aim of “liberating” the artillery piece, which was mounted on
the forecastle of the submerged vessel. That gun now stands proudly above Veules-lesRoses, where an excellent memorial has been erected to the memory of the brave soldiers who gave their lives in the service of France and Britain. (It is said that when first installed, the gun faced England but if it did, that error has now been rectified.) The Mayor of Veules contacted the Mayor of Cerons and an official twinning was enacted between the two villages. Now we have been invited to taste some more Cerons wine by Seaford members’ Jim Taylor and his wife Margaret, the first of our group to visit the village. They were warmly received and returned to England with more wine of course. The “Cerons” Appellation is the smallest appellation in France and Veules-les Roses has the shortest river in France...As they say, small is often beautiful. Cheers! Physio Bike Fit
Being comfortable on your bike is essential because any time you’re in pain, not only will your PERFORMANCE be affected but so will your ENJOYMENT! SOUTHDOWNS PHYSIOTHERAPY is now offering a 2-Hour PHYSIO BIKE-FIT session from our clinic in Seaford Town Centre. A proper bike fit will help prevent pain that is common in the KNEE, HIP, NECK and LOWER BACK, particularly with riders who are trying to adapt their bodies to the bike they have already purchased. Whether you are a competitive cyclist, weekend bike rider, or a commuter, a professional PHYSIO BIKE-FIT is essential to help: – Improve Performance – Prevent/Treat Injuries
Why use a Physiotherapist to fit your bike?
From an injury treatment or injury prevention point of view the difficulty lies in assessing whether it is the setup of the bike that is incorrect, or whether it is in fact a musculoskeletal problem that needs addressing. If a BikeFit only addresses the set-up of the bike then problems such as spinal stiffness/muscular weakness/tightness etc. (which could be the route cause of the problem) will be ignored. A PHYSIOTHERAPIST is skilled in assessing both to TAILOR the necessary input accordingly.
What does the Physio Bike-Fitting process involve?
First of all we take a thorough history that takes into account your level of cycling, injury history, and goals. Next the Physiotherapist will examine you from a MUSCULOSKELETAL perspective, examining factors such as flexibility, core strength, skeletal alignment and foot position. If appropriate, treatment and/or exercise prescription for any discrepancies will be administered. After this we will attach your bike to our Turbo trainer and perform VIDEO ANALYSIS as you ride to ascertain which adjustments are needed. Once adjustments are made, further video analysis is undertaken to see if biomechanical improvements have been made.
Reasons why a Physio Bike fit makes financial sense: 1) 2) 3) 4)
It costs the fraction the price of a new bike. It’s cheaper than a possible course of treatment that could occur if the problems weren’t addressed. If the bike set-up is incorrect then the injury is unlikely to improve. For any Physio Bike-Fit sessions booked before 1st January 2016 we are offering a reduced price of £99 (The session will cost £139 thereafter).
To book a Physio Bike Fit, purchase a voucher, or for more information please call us at Southdowns Physiotherapy on 01323 894354 or e-mail us at info@southdowns physio.co.uk

TAKING THE STRESS OUT OF CHRISTMAS
How to get the Christmas you want By Judy Renihan
There is something magical about Christmas – carols, tinsel, Santa and the smell of mulled wine. So what happens in reality to make it the most stressful time of the year? Is it finding the money so that the kids can have all the presents they want? Is it because we’re terrified that we won’t have all the right food on Christmas day and Morrison’s will be closed? Is it because you’re going to have to meet up with that relation you fell out with last Christmas? Or is it simply the pressure of having to be happy in this season of good cheer? Christmas comes with high expectations of the ideal happy family sitting in front of the fire opening amazing presents and gorging on sumptuous food, but most of us struggle to live up to these ideals. Christmas can intensify feelings of loneliness, or magnify family conflicts and highlight financial stress. Not so long ago we had treats at Christmas that we wouldn’t have at any other time of the year. Chocolate and sweets, for example, were the reserve of high days and holidays; in many families now it has become a store cupboard staple. In our commercial culture ‘Things’ are more readily available. It has become more difficult to make Christmas special.
Set realistic expectations
Advertisers will always intimidate us into thinking how our life ‘should’ be, especially at Christmas.Your living room will have soft warm lighting and star dust will shimmer down the chimney as everyone laughs and opens their presents. A turkey, with all the trimmings miraculously sits on the table waiting to be carved by dad. Sometimes we feel as if we’ve failed when we don’t match up to this Dickensian Christmas ideal. Manage your expectations ahead of the day. Maybe everyone won’t get the present they hoped for, perhaps dinner will be late and the cranberry sauce gets forgotten. Perhaps not everyone in the family will get along. It’s ok that Christmas isn’t all that you hoped for. Remember you can only manage your own expectations – you can’t take responsibility for everyone else’s. If you’re worried about being on your own at Christmas plan ahead; contact family and friends, get involved with the
54
community by attending events or volunteering. Some of us can’t avoid being on our own at Christmas, but sometimes by taking the initiative we can avoid the solitude.
Manage Obligation
Modern families can seem complicated, there is often some distance between us. We feel obliged to see parents and grandparents. This can become even more difficult if there has been a divorce and mothers and fathers have new families. And you have to consider your partners side of the family. It can feel like most of Christmas is spent in the car! Arrange to celebrate at other times of the year; Easter or birthdays. Put aside Skype time. I wonder if anybody benefits from you splitting yourself into little bits to ‘try’ and please everybody. This is one day in the year and family isn’t just about Christmas. You don’t need to feel obliged to buy things you can’t afford. Being a good parent isn’t about buying the latest iPhone or the biggest box of Lego. Real friendships are about relationship not what you buy each other.
Prioritise what is important
Coming at the end of the year Christmas is a good time to take stock and realise the things you’re grateful for. Being grateful helps prioritise what is important to you. Throughout the year I have been privileged to be involved with several voluntary agencies in Seaford who work tirelessly to support our community. How lucky to live in a place where people give so freely of their time and energy.
Remember
Happiness can’t be manufactured by M&S or Microsoft. It is a way of ‘being’ not a way of ‘doing’. Clear out the obligation and prioritise what’s important to you this Christmas. “Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.” Dr. Seuss Judy works from The House in Seaford. You can contact her on 01323 895594 for a consultation.
Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
We would like to thank everyone who supported us in the successful launch of ‘The House’ in 2015. We wish all of Seaford a Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year.

Two new faces AT Inner Wheel! At a recent meeting, President Eileen had the great pleasure of inducting two new members, Nina Gatward and Carol Gillespie. Both Nina and Carol have recently moved to Seaford to enjoy the benefits of the fresh sea air and friendly atmosphere in the town. The club warmly welcomed them. Nina and Carol have thrown themselves into club’s activities and are helping with fund raising work.
International
In the run-up to Christmas the club always thinks about children – our own grandchildren and children throughout the world who, because of their circumstances, might not have the chance to have some of the opportunities that youngsters can enjoy. This year is no exception – we have filled and wrapped 30 shoe boxes for the Mustard Seed “Love in a Box” charity. Our International group knows that these boxes will soon be on their way to Moldovia and the Ukraine.
… And here at home!
Our craft group (Crafty Ladies!) sew and knit throughout the year and recently put on a display at a Skills Café! They support local children’s charities – however, in addition, for the first time, they have raised enough to help some families have a little more Christmas cheer.
Next Year
9th January 2016 is a red letter day in the Inner Wheel calendar and we a planning a “Bangers and Mash” lunch in aid of the Friends of Eastbourne Hospital fund raising. Tickets are available from Inner Wheel members.

Running Commentary... The sport of running continues to increase in popularity year after year, and if I was empowered to give awards that recognise achievement and influence in running, I would want to present eight trophies. I would start with an award to the organiser of the madcap, character-building Tough Guy Cross Country Race, which is held just outside Wolverhampton. This event is not for the weak or unadventurous runner because it is truly the toughest race of its kind, with more mud than you’ve ever seen, more evil obstacles and more runners who fail to finish than any other race. The 12-mile course is so tough that the finishing times look more like marathon times. The runners’ calendar needs events like this to inspire and stretch runners to the limit. I would also like to recognise the positive effect that the London Marathon has had in encouraging people to take up running, and not just to run marathons. The TV images of the event have led to hundreds of thousands of ordinary people stepping outside the box and running.

Would running be so popular if there were no races to take part in? I doubt it! Events can only take place if there are dedicated people to organise and marshal them, and for this reason my next two awards go to race organisers. First, Linda Jennings who has been crucial to the success of the local Mince Pie 10 for so many years. Without her commitment the event would not be rated as one of the top three races in the Country. The other race organiser who deserves an award is Albert Kemp of the Wadhurst Running Club who has been in charge of the popular Bewl Water 15, also one of the top races. Sometimes, people who are inspired to take up running, quickly become the inspiration for others. Bianca Buss who joined the Seaford Striders as an absolute beginner in April, ran her first race, the Worthing 10km in June and just four months later completed her first half marathon. My next ‘trophy winner’ is James Lott, who in the junior fun run race at the Alfriston Festival Week in August, stopped to assist his brother who had fallen and hurt himself during the race. Because of this selfless act of sportsmanship he finished the race near the back rather than as one of the front runners. Recipient number 7 is Jo Pavey, who at the age of 40 and having given birth to her second child only 10 months earlier, won a gold medal at the European Championships in Zurich. I believe her exceptional achievements have encouraged countless runners to keep running and not be deterred by moving into the ‘veteran’ age category. My final recognition goes to Stuart Mills, who in October won the Beachy Head Marathon for the eighth time (in 3hrs 8mins), which is pretty impressive, especially for someone who is now in his 50s, and I doubt his 8 wins will ever be beaten. As a sports psychologist he clearly practises what he preaches, and having attended one of his seminars, I can vouch for his enthusiasm for running and his belief in positive thinking when training and racing. This list of award winners is obviously subjective and I realise it’s only the tip of a massive inspiration iceberg, yet it is people like them who make our sport vibrant and exciting. Stuart Mills would probably tell us all to keep a long list of such people in our head when we go out running...and see what happens. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club

Food Banks
Hunger and poverty. Many of us won’t associate these problems with our own society but it’s a fact that 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line. Five years ago food banks had scarcely been heard of, but today more than a thousand operate across the UK, giving assistance to people in need of basic supplies to survive. People need to use food banks for a variety of reasons: redundancy, illness, benefit delay, changes in benefits, unexpected bills, underemployment and family breakdown, to name a few. In today’s world of zero hours contracts and steadily rising food and fuel prices, an increasing number of people are finding themselves in need of help. The Trussell Trust – the UK’s largest network of food banks – fed nearly a million people in 2013-2014, over a third of which were children. Typically, clients are referred to food banks by front line care professionals such as doctors, social workers, health visitors and the police, who are trained to identify individuals in crisis. They issue vouchers which are exchanged at food banks for emergency food. Though all food banks may not operate in the same way, the Trussell Trust provides emergency rations for a minimum of three days. All food donated to food banks comes from members of the public. This could be from individuals like you and me, but partnerships are also formed with schools, churches and businesses. Large collections are made during Harvest Festivals and there are also collection points in many supermarkets available throughout the year. Donating is easy. All you need do is purchase a few extra items with your weekly shop, then drop them off in the
collection boxes situated near the checkouts. Most people decide on an amount they want to spend and keep on buying until this is reached! If you purchase budget brands, your money can go further and help more people.
Shopping List Milk (UHT/powde red) Sugar Fr uit juice (long-li fe) Soup Pasta sauce Sponge pudding (tinned) Tomatoes (tinned ) Cereals Rice pudding (tinn ed) Tea bags/coffee Instant mash Rice/pasta Tinned meat/fish Tinned vegetables Tinned fruit Jam Biscuits/snack ba rs
Items purchased should be non-perishable and in date – so anything in tins, packets and jars. If there isn’t a a food bank near you but you would still like to help, you can make a cash donation, which can be done online in many cases.
Once food is received at food banks, it is sorted and packed into boxes by volunteers, who also guide clients to agencies able to help them with longer term problems. None of us can do everything to solve the social problems around us, but all of us can do something. Donating to a food bank is one example. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

BEACHY HEAD MARATHON
24th October 2015
One of the country’s biggest and arguably toughest offroad events, the Beachy Head Marathon (BHM) took place at the weekend. The countryside of the South Downs National Park hosted nearly 1,500 runners, joggers and walkers. For most of the participants this is not so much a race but more an experience, and with 4,900 feet to ascend along the way this is not a course for marathon PBs. It commences with a ridiculous hill right at the start by Bede’s School, where crampons would appear more appropriate than trainers. The route then follows a continuous 20 minute climb before heading inland, crossing the A259 and after negotiating a treacherous flint and chalk descent, drops into Jevington, where a welcome drinks/food station awaits. After climbing out of Jevington it’s into the lovely Friston Forest, past the Long Man of Wilmington and on to Alfriston village. Then comes a long drag up to Bo Peep, which can really sap the energy, but spirits are lifted by the spectacular views along this exposed section. Here the route turns reassuringly towards the sea and perhaps for the first time thoughts of the finish, but it’s only half way and there follows a deceptively long stretch to High & Over, where there is extra cheer for home runners in the form of a road crossing and water station manned by the Seaford Striders. Then on to another stunning view, this time across the Cuckmere on the exhilarating plunge into Littlington and another lifesaving drinks/food station. Back into Friston Forest and two sets of wickedly steep wooden steps whereupon your quadriceps start screaming in protest. All of a sudden Cuckmere Haven appears in all its glory, but caution must be exercised on a steep descent before crossing the A259 once again. The Seven Sisters are reached after 20 miles. It’s said that you can train for 20, but the last 6.2 are in your head. Is there any marathon in the country with a tougher final 6.2. Seven Sisters? You run out of superlatives describing
72
this final stretch of coastline exemplified by the iconic Belle Tout lighthouse and Beachy Head, about the same time as energy levels begin to plummet and leg muscles suddenly start doing strange things. Whilst you may be forgiven for thinking this is mass torture, the sense of achievement on finishing the event is overwhelming and we are privileged to have such a stunning route on our doorstep. In perfect running conditions winner Stuart Mills (Uckfield Runners) took an early lead and stayed there, coming home in 3:08:05 with first lady Sarah Swinhoe (London Heathside) finishing in 3:23:44. Eight Seaford Striders took on the challenge and Paul Heywood (left) was once again first for the club in a very speedy time of 3:56:16. He was followed by Daniel Wittenberg in 4:28:37. First female Strider was Lisa Skinner in 4:31:51 and hot on her heels were with Claire Keith 4:32:41; Matt Eade 4:33:07 and Beth Ruddock 4:38:58. Sadly Kallum Wright took a tumble and after first aid recorded 4:56:17, much slower than he would otherwise have expected. Sadly Jacob Miles also picked up an injury and was unable to finish and Chris Wrathall had to pull out prior to the race due to a recent illness – club members really sympathise with these last three runners who had all put in hours of training and had been looking forward to achieving fast times at this event. What is exceptional about the above race is that for Claire Keith, in completing the BHM, she completed a Runner’s heptathlon, in that she ran seven races on seven consecutive weekends. Her heptathlon began with the New Forest Marathon (3:52:58), Hove Prom 10km (45:01), Barns Green Half Marathon (1:44:53 – Course Personal Best), Bournemouth Marathon (3:41:52 CPB), Chichester Half Marathon (1:46:04), Warren Hill XC (37:03 - CPB) and finally Beachy Head Marathon (4:32:41 - CPB). These seven races totalled 116 miles and were completed in 17 hours at an average pace of just under 7mph. Claire is raising funds for the Chartwell Cancer Trust, in memory of Lily Mae, the three-year-old granddaughter of club member John, who sadly lost her 10 month battle against a very rare liver and lung cancer. The Chartwell Cancer Trust supported Lily-Mae’s family throughout her illness. With work sponsorship, Claire is now close to raising £1,000 and if you would like to donate to this very worthwhile charity, please go to: http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/ showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=CRKeith

On Trafalgar Day this year, 21st October, the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George held a formal dinner to commemorate the battle and to toast the Immortal Memory of Admiral Lord Nelson. Nearly 70 members and friends sat down to dine at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston. Guest of Honour was East Sussex Deputy Lieutenant, Derek Stevens, who replied on behalf of the guests. The Immortal Memory was given by branch Chaplain, Revd David Farrant who reminded us that Nelson’s sailors came from many parts of the world, not just England with Scots, Irish, Germans, Spaniards and even some French. The gathering was graced by many civic representatives, including Mayors of Lewes, Seaford, Newhaven and Telscombe and the Mayor of Peacehaven arrived in his other role as Vice Chair of Lewes District Town Council. Alfriston Parish Council was represented by Jen Dumelow. This was also an occasion to present a cheque to the Sea Cadet Corps from the surplus money available following this year’s Seahaven Veterans and Armed Forces Day. Mayor of Seaford, Cllr David Argent, presented the cheque on behalf of the Joint Organising Committee. Branch member, Dr Peter Fenwick OBE also presented a cheque in his capacity as President of Seaford Rotary. This was a portion of the profits made on the day by Rotary’s Tavern in the Tent. The proceeds of the evening’s raffle, along with other donations, is to be given to branch committee member, Liz Holland, to support her fund raising for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, for which she has already collected over £2,200 and in the process raised awareness of this debilitating conditions amongst the public. Branch President, Laurie Holland, said, “It was great that tonight we helped the Sea Cadets with some useful funds, but also helping Liz out with her very special campaign was a privilege.”

Ed Jarzembowski – 2015 Jiangsu Friendship Award Congratulations to Bishopstone resident, Ed Jarzembowski, who has received a Friendship Award from the Jiangsu Province of China (which has a larger population than the whole of the UK). The “Jiangsu Friendship Award” is the highest award of Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government for foreign experts, and is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to Jiangsu Province with regard to economic progress and social development. The award was presented to Ed by the Provincial People’s Government at a ceremony in September. Ed has been Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy in Nanjing, Jiangsu since 2012, where his investigation of fossil collections with Chinese colleagues has led to many new discoveries of littleknown creatures from the age of the dinosaurs. As well as his museum experience, he has undertaken ‘digs’ in Southeast England since his schooldays, which enabled him to explore the ancient links between the English Weald and Northeast China. The provincial government in Liaoning has recently helped found a new museum there, and a new amber museum is now anticipated down by the Yangtze. Peter Austen

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB October is the month when we can relax a bit, though we are still busy with the mundane things running the club such as dealing with requests and spending the money we have raised during the summer.
together of the other Lions Clubs in the areaie Lewes District and Brighton, six clubs in all, and the first event was the Pub Games at the White Lion in Seaford. We came third. The second event organised by Lewes Lions was a Toad-in-the-Hole competition. Have you played Toad-in-the-Hole? It is a very enjoyable Sussex Game I’m told. We did well, coming second.
21st October was the date of the Autumn Tints trip. We took 60 pensioners on a trip through the beautiful countryside of Sussex, admiring the autumn colours. This year, the colours have been wonderful it is a shame about the weather which was damp. We ended up in Bodle Street Green and were given a cream tea by the local WI. A good day was had by all.
It has been a very relaxing month after all our efforts over the summer. We start work again with Christmas collections and chestnut selling. Look out for us over the Christmas period.
In November we managed to be very social with two Zone Olympic events. The Zone Olympics are a get

Our last social event was a wonderful Chinese Banquet at the New Dynasty in Seaford. Many thanks to David and his staff.
If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk We also have two minibuses for use by the community and take out various groups with or without a driver, ie if you want to provide your own driver you can do so (subject to insurance) call 01323 898961 for more information about the minibuses. Unfortunately though, due to unreported damage to one of the busses, we may have to restrict their usage. Photos top to bottom: The Lions with their raffle stall, enjoying a cream tea.

MINCE PIE SELL OUT Seaford Striders are delighted to announce that the 500 runner limit has been reached and their annually organised race, the “Mince Pie” is once again a complete sell-out.
in the area around Telscombe and Saltdean, with many entrants returning year after year for a bracing preChristmas work-out.
This popular multi-terrain event is contested over a challenging 10 mile course and raises funds for charities and the club itself. This year’s chosen charity is Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers (SERV Sussex). This organisation is run by volunteers and provides a free night-time service, 365 days of the year for NHS hospitals across Sussex. SERV transport urgent blood, samples, patient notes and other consignments between hospitals, eliminating costly transport bills and allowing hospitals to focus their resources on patient care. 3 to 4 volunteers are on call every evening, often using their own vehicles. For more information, please visit http://www.servsussex. org.uk/
Top quality race photographers, Sussex Sport Photography, will be on hand to capture runners aiming not only for a fast time but also those wanting a fun run, with the emphasis on end of season enjoyment, where fancy dress is welcome. Enthusiastic marshals are guaranteed and there are plentiful water stations along the route. A medal, goody bag and of course a mince pie await all finishers as well as spot prizes and a raffle. A pre- and post-race massage are available and there is an opportunity to buy sports clothing, footwear and equipment from local specialists InterSport, who will be in attendance.
The Mince Pie Race, sponsored by longstanding supporter, David Jordan Estate Agents, is on Sunday 6th December at 11am. Starting and finishing at Peacehaven Leisure Centre and heading off road, the route takes

Seaford Afternoon Flower Club We were delighted to welcome a number of visitors to our October meeting, and Lucinda Knapman entertained us with her demonstration entitled “Fabulous Flowers”. Her presentation was truly delightful and enjoyed by all. Our November meeting on the 19th featured an InHouse Demonstration by Members on the theme of “’Tis The Season”. This proved to be an entertaining and fairly informal afternoon and we were most grateful to those who took part. We are all full of inspiration and ready to decorate our tables and halls for the festive season. The December meeting on the 17th will follow a different format, being a musical afternoon of Seasonal Music played on Unusual Instruments by Joy and Derrick. Come along and be surprised and delighted. The entertainment will be followed by a Christmas Tea. We meet on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 2pm at the Baptist Church in Belgrave Road. Visitors are always made welcome. Contact Georgie Wall on 01323 490979 or Sue Ward on 01323 894848 for further details.

Martello Rotary Club Seaford Tree Charity Christmas Wardens Tree Collection Winter Tree Care Tips
A real Christmas tree is a wonderful thing to enjoy during the festive season. However, once the festivities are over, disposal of the tree becomes a real problem. Seaford Martello Rotary club will come and take away your dying tree in exchange for a charitable donation of ÂŁ4.
The scheme will operate in Seaford on Sunday 3rd January 2016. To request for a tree to be collected all you have to do is email rotarytrees@hotmail.com or telephone 07967 049988. Leave your address, and if possible a contact number before 6pm on Friday 1st January. Our lorry will collect your tree and your donation. We will let you know whether your tree will be collected am or pm. Last year’s collection went so well we are extending the service this year, so give us a call. All of the money raised will benefit one of our local charities and if you give us a name we can also claim gift aid on your donation. Thank you.
As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, here are a few steps you can take to keep your trees in top condition.
Pruning
Winter is an ideal time to prune your trees, as they are dormant throughout the colder months. Before pruning, carry out a visual check of the tree and identify any dead or diseased branches. These should be removed first, then carry out any shaping or thinning. Remember, if a branch is too high for you to prune safely from standing on the ground, call in the professionals.
Trees in Pots
If your potted trees are sitting directly on your patio, the cold can easily transfer from the patio to the pot. This can be prevented by raising your containers up using pot feet. Wrapping your pots with hessian or bubble wrap will help to stop them from cracking, and will stop your trees roots from getting too chilly.
Fleecing
Horticultural fleecing can be used to protect vulnerable species, such as exotic fruit trees. Make sure to remove fleece during prolonged periods of milder weather, as otherwise your trees may begin to sweat and rot. Winter is also a great time to plant trees, and the Seaford Tree Wardens will be planting trees in Seaford in February and March. If you would like to get involved, or want to find out more about the Seaford Tree Wardens, visit our website: www.seafordtreewardens.wordpress.com or our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SeafordTree-Wardens-402591039836438/

Local Musician Reaches Semi Finals In UK Song Writing Competition Local musician and song writer, Colin Mackay, has made it to the semi finals of this year’s UK national song writing competition. Colin, who is 65, has lived in Seaford for 12 years, primarily plays the drums, guitar, ukulele, keyboards and is also a vocalist. You may recognise him as a member of a number of local Sussex bands including Fat Belly Jones (Soul), Tony and the Saints (Rock & Roll) and currently the Pearly Cubes’ (’80s and ’90s). Colin has been writing songs since the mid-70s and has had some published by Bruce Welch of the Shadows and Ric Lee of Ten Years After. Colin was also a runner up in the last 24 songs in the Eurovision contest in the early ’80s! Colin explained “I have also co-written and produced songs with my friend David Morris who also lives in Sussex. We entered two songs this year in the UK Song writing competition and they both reached the pending stage, but it was the song ‘Crazy About You’ that I wrote and Dave produced, that got us to the semi finals, with the prospect of winning.” The song ‘Crazy For You’ is a stylish, 1920s inspired piece that Colin plays on the ukulele. You can hear his song on Soundcloud under the name ‘madjack1950’. We wish Colin all the very best in the competition.

Christmas Time, Mistletoe and ...Property Websites? Ah the festive season... It’s not that long now until December 25th. Excited kids, family gatherings, too much food, Sir Cliff Richard songs and nothing good on the telly. A time full of traditions, some good, some not so good. A fairly new tradition among the collection of festive must dos is people reaching for tablets on Boxing Day. Not to cure excess merriment. No, the type of tablets we’re referring to are of the electronic variety. For the past five years the property websites in the UK have recorded huge amounts of visitors on December 26th. People are at home, with time on their hands and want to have a look to see what properties are up for sale. It’s also a time people start to think about moving. For many a new home is at the top of their New Year Resolutions list. While the big day is indeed getting nearer you still have time to give yourself a great chance of being seen by those Boxing Day browsers. If you want to sell in the New Year, get us to list your property now before any festive decorations go up. Photos in January showing Christmas trees tend to make a property look odd. Obviously you don’t want people walking round your home while you tuck into your turkey, or as the family sits around playing board games or immersed in their new gadgets. But having your property on the property portals over Christmas gives it a much better chance of selling earlier in the New Year. 106
We’ve seen that the first two weeks of January can be very busy with people visiting properties they have seen on line during the Christmas break. Thanks for reading and a Merry Christmas to you all.
Andrew and Stephen PS: Our Christmas opening times are below: We close for the holiday on 23rd December at 1pm. On 29th, 30th and 31st of December we are open between 10am and1pm, and it’s the same hours on Saturday 2nd January. We return to normal opening hours of 9am to 5.30pm from Monday 4th January 2016.

THE WELSH ONION (Allium Fistulosum) The Welsh onion never forms a rounded bulb but does produce many long, white-based scallions (salad/spring onions). It is often referred to as the Japanese Bunching Onion. It is extremely hardy and should last many years. Its small onions are available for salads any time of the year. It’s probably referred to as Welsh because it resembles small leeks, but it originates from the orient and is most popular in China and Japan. If growing from seed, chose a light well drained soil sheltered from winter winds. Sow from April to August in its permanent position. Divide every two or three years, retaining only the youngest portion. Seed is available from Thompson & Morgan (Ciboule Arrow Onion), Ebay or via the Internet.

are I say it, Christmas is almost upon us! Garden Centres have now had their Christmas displays for at least two months so they will soon be coming down and Spring planting will be everywhere. Gardening usually goes on the back burner for Christmas, but as soon as it’s over there will be plenty to do. After Christmas is an ideal time to start your winter pruning of apple and pear trees. Don’t do it all at once. Wait a few weeks then start on roses, dogwoods and other garden shrubs. Aim to finish by the end of March. However, back to Christmas. What do you buy a gardener for Christmas? A visit to your local garden centre will give you plenty of ideas. Don’t ask a gardener what they want. Just think what you imagine they would like, and then at least it will be a surprise. What about new secateurs, a garden fleece, tomato food or just plain plastic labels, the list is endless. What about treating them to a year’s membership of your local Seaford & District
JOBS TO DO IN DECEMBER
3 If you haven’t already done so, order or buy next year’s selection of seeds, especially any which need to be sown early in the year. 3 Lag or protect any outdoor pipes. If you can, turn off the water supply and drain pipes. 3 From now on be prepared for snow. Knock heavy falls of snow off shrubs, hedges and small trees to prevent branches breaking under the weight. 3 Vines should be pruned after all leaves have fallen and the vine is dormant. 3 If Christmas day is sunny, go into the greenhouse, shut the door, sit on a chair and enjoy twenty minutes of peace and quiet.
MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD

It’s all very well us Community Garden insiders thinking that we know what we want from volunteers, but what are potential volunteers looking for? The answers are the direct result of us taking a table at an event at the Downs Leisure Centre held by the Senior Forum, at which lots of organisations were invited to take a pitch to sell their various appeals. One of those who approached our table and its photographs of activities in our delightful walled spot in the Crouch Gardens was Gloria, and we obviously made a good job of marketing ourselves because two weeks later there she was, hard at work on one of our regular Wednesday mornings. So what was the decider. We asked her while she got stuck in to tidying up cannas for the winter. “I went to the Senior Forum looking for a weekly commitment,” she said. I’ve always had a garden. I know a little about gardening, well, let’s say I know about my garden. I’ve lived in Seaford for 20 years and wanted somewhere to come to meet people, to get something productive out of the time spent. I’ve done art classes, the gym, playing cards, but I thought that here, if I don’t come every week I won’t be letting people down.” So what was her first day like then? “Ana showed me round and then I did some potting on,” she said as she worked companionably with another newbie, Alison, who explained that she moved to Seaford from Surrey four months ago. “I just found it,” she said. “I’m a keen gardener and it’s a good way to meet people.” The cannas that Gloria and Alison were attending to had been given to the garden, and another of our volunteers, Stan, knows quite a bit about these exotics, having lived in Spain for a number of years where they are much more at home. “They are tubers so will need to be dried off,
tidied up to avoid disease, and over-wintered in the poly tunnel,” he said, adding that his own had come into flower in October as a result of the late sun. Meanwhile, in said rather leaky poly tunnel – unfortunately peppered with a few more holes thanks to the unwelcome attention of some obviously bored youngsters who also managed to toss one of our plastic chairs into a tree; thanks lads! – Bill was potting on crocosmia. Its beds had only just been cleared of the last chilli plant, tomatoes and peppers, after the exceptionally mild autumn which saw some late fruiting. Outside, we are happy to pick kale for customers, and the leeks are showing promise. And we hope that some of the bulbs planted earlier will be ready for Christmas. So come and look at the sales table any Wednesday morning. We’d love to see you and show you round. The Garden Team Photos from top: Chillies were still producing hotly in late October; New volunteers Gloria, left, and Alison, prepare cannas for over wintering, Curly Kale – a renouned super food; Our sales area – always a popular place for discussing plants.

Seaford Gardening Club The clocks have gone back and gardeners are making use of shorter daylight hours to tidy their plots and greenhouses. Birds are filling themselves with extra food for colder days ahead and the hedgehogs are snuggling down into their winter hibernation quarters. Alan Grey, our speaker at our October meeting, gave a very interesting talk on the influence of the weather. Although his main interest is the Sussex Wildlife Trust, he has many other subjects he supports and also give talks on. His presentation on cloud formations varied from the oldest photos taken in 1973 up until 2010 – and were taken at various locations. There are many types of cloud formation, ie. the cumulus, which rise vertically. If they are up high it means cool days, but if lower the weather will be warmer. During depressions, air rises and cools to allow water vapour to condense, forming rain clouds. When air sinks and warms anticyclones can develop. The jet stream, which can move position, controls the kind of weather we will get. Mountains can attract rainfall and rapid changes in weather conditions, so this should be considered if you are thinking of climbing one! Rainbows are a favourite with young and old alike and are formed by light refracted through raindrops. There have been some particularly good ones in recent months. Fog is formed by radiation due to cooling on clear calm nights. Alan ended his talk with some lovely shots of local beauty spots, such as Devil’s Dyke, which produces lovely cloud formations, and storms and flooding in the Cuckmere valley. I am sure we all learnt a great deal about our varied weather patterns and moods.

At our AGM on 21st October it was announced that the club is in urgent need of a new treasurer and speakers’ secretary. Please think about this as the club cannot continue without these posts being filled as soon as possible. Phone Anne on 01323 491331 if you feel you can help. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. For visitors it is £2 but only £10 to join for the year. There are no extra charges and refreshments are available. We hope you will give us a try – you are more than welcome. Further information can be obtained from Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. There will not be a talk in December as members enjoy the annual Christmas meal at The Avondale. So the next talk will be on 27th January 2016 – more about this in the January issue. A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

Musical Showtime Concerts
The last concert was held on 10th October and included a new singing artist Matthew Bason, whose voice was beautiful. There was an excellent programme of musical melodies, ranging from rock ’n’ roll to Les Miserables. Getting up to Jive was on a lot of peoples minds that evening...if only! Matthew also offered a repertoire of good clean stories, and it will be a pleasure to see him in the not too distant future for a return visit. Once again Val and Ivor Lawrence put on an excellent show at the Meridian Centre Community Hall in Peacehaven. If you are interested in coming along, the first visit is free and after then, the price is £6. There is also a raffle with good prizes and refreshments can be purchased. Phone Val or Ivor on 01273 512771.
Transport is available on a first come first serve basis, c/o N.P.S. Lions. The cost is £4 return, from door to door. Please contact Rita Evans 01323 896877 to book and for more details. The next Musical Showtime Concert will be in March. More details will be published ion the March issue of Seaford Scene.
