Stage Arts and cultural events in the Seaford area Welcome to the latest of our regular updates on what is going on within Seaford’s vibrant arts and cultural scene, compiled by Andrea Hargreaves.

Cinema

There’s a wealth of films and theatre at Seaford Community Cinema during February with which to expand and enrich your screen tastes. The month starts with a matinée showing on Saturday 3rd February of Loving Vincent (12A). In this biographical drama about the life of Vincent van Gogh animation artists have recreated each of the 65,000 frames as an oil painting on canvas to represent the Impressionist’s work.

On Friday 9th February it’s Land of Mine (15), a DanishGerman historical drama inspired by real events when German prisoners of war were sent to clear land mines in Denmark after World War II. On 10th February, there’s a Saturday matinée of Goodbye Christopher Robin, about the boy and his dysfunctional family who are swept up in the international success of the books about his toys.

Next we travel to Detroit (15) on Friday 16th February, to witness the civil unrest in 1967 when a group of rogue police officers had retribution rather than justice on their minds. Still in America, in steamy Mississippi, it’s the NT Live screening of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (15) on Thursday 22nd February, starring Sienna Miller, Jack O’Connell and Colm Meaney. On Friday 23rd February it’s God’s Own Country (15), about a young man landed with the family farm, binge drinking and having casual sex until a Romanian migrant hired for the lambing season ignites an intense relationship.

Saturday matinées start at 2.30pm, Thursday NT Live screenings at 7pm and Friday evening films at 7.30pm.

Seaford Little Theatre brings us a production of A Slight Hangover, from Friday 16th to Saturday 24th February.

Ian Ogilvie’s comedy, directed by Trish Richings, is about a notorious, thirty-year ménage à trois, which ends with the death of one of them, leaving two old megastars stuck in their Caribbean mansion, until the deceased’s long-lost daughter turns up. There is a matinée on Saturday 17th February, starting at 2.30pm and all evening performances start at 7.45pm. Tickets can be bought, in person only, at Redgolds opticians in Broad Street.

Art & Books

Arts@theCrypt’s gallery in Church Street will be a place of beautifully chosen words on Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th February when LitFest 18 takes over. Brunch is at 11am, then from 11.30am until 1pm poet Peter Martin is reading and discussing his latest work, with musical interval. From 2pm until 4pm there’s a poetry workshop with Chris Goode and Richard Hume, and from 5pm until 7pm, Professor Nicholas Royle is reading from and discussing a work in progress. On Sunday there’s a brunch and browse session from 11am until 2pm, then until 4pm, Umi Sinha will be discussing her book Belonging and her new novel. Then Ruth Figgest will be discussing her new work, with a musical interlude. From 5pm until 7pm it’s Open Mic Poetry Night. Each session costs £5, with tickets available from Seaford TIC or thecryptgallery.com Seaford Contemporary Illustration and Printmaking Group is having an exhibition and workshop at Arts@theCrypt from 28th February to 4th March, see page 8. Called The Book Show, the exhibition is inspired by children’s literature and curated by Seaford Contemporary Illustrators and Printmakers (SCIP).

Music

On Sunday 4th February, Music from the Sofa will be playing at the Galley, Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club from 12.30pm until 2.30pm.

After millions of us watched Blue Planet, it is clear to see we need to care more about the plastic products we buy, which for me means thinking about changes I can make to my lifestyle, so every month I will have some Top Tips for easy changes we can all make!

Buy a reusable coffee cup. Millions of non-recyclable cups are thrown away each week, and it’s very simple to bring your own cup!

Pledge to stop buying items in plastic. This is a lot easier than you think. Swap your bottle of shampoo for a bar of shampoo soap, and use bars of hand soap instead of plastic bottles of liquid soap.

l

Swap your supermarket plastic bag for a reusable bag.

l

Say goodbye to buying bleach and strong chemical- based cleaners. Instead buy products such as Ecover and Method – both product lines clean just as well as harsh chemicals, but are plant-based, so kinder to the planet.

l

Go to the butcher, baker and deli counter with your own containers/bags instead of buying items pre-packaged in plastic that you throw away.

Don’t be afraid to ask in your local butcher’s – in my experience they are more than happy to do this.

Buy fewer new things this year. Second hand and charity shop finds and car boot sales really do make a difference and the savings can be huge. I find it’s always exciting to get something for less than half of the price if it was new!

l

Litter is a massive problem, so, if you create waste when you are out and about, take it home with you to recycle rather than throwing it in a street bin.

l

Stop buying any drinks in plastic bottles. If you drink water, stop buying bottled water and use your own refill bottle instead.

I organise regular monthly beach cleans in Seaford – come along and pick up the plastic that pollutes the seas. The next one is at 10am on Sunday 4th February, meeting at The Buckle, next to the Sailing Club.

The Book Show

An exhibition of contemporary illustration and printmaking inspired by children’s literature will be taking place at Arts@theCrypt, Church Street, from Wednesday 28th February until Sunday 4th March.

Journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland, or through the wardrobe to Narnia as Seaford Contemporary Illustrators and Printmakers (SCIP) present The Book Show, a five-day exhibition of pictures by some of the UK’s finest illustrators. SCIP have brought together the group to coincide with East Sussex’s celebration of World Book Day on 1st March. It is hosted by Alice Carter, Sally Elford and Josie Jo. Alice said: ‘This is the initial step in helping to create a new and dynamic creative scene in this up-and-coming coastal town.’

Joining The Book Show will be more than 20 professional artists, including award-winning author/illustrators Benji Davies, Karl James Mountford, Lesley Barnes, Graham Carter, Helen Musselwhite, John Bond and Bjorn Rune Lie. The exhibition will include affordable limited edition prints and original artworks, including prints from Benji Davies’ award-winning book Grandpa’s Island, critically acclaimed book covers by Karl James Mountford and original paper cuts by Helen Musselwhite. All the work on display will be for sale. And that’s just in the gallery space…

The 13th-century Undercroft will be transformed into a reading room by the Arabian Tent Company, to be filled with books by the county library. Throughout the exhibition this reading den will be open for children and their families to enjoy, and there will be book readings by local authors Graham Carter and Giles Paley Phillips.

One of SCIP’s aims is to inspire the next generation of artists, so throughout the show there will be mark-making workshops for children aged from three upwards, who will be encouraged to discover which household objects they can use to create their own piece of printmaking.

Sessions can be booked online or by emailing hello@ wearescip.co.uk. Budding artists will also have the opportunity to enter a Design a Book Jacket competition which will be running for the duration of the exhibition.

The show is open from the Wednesday to the Saturday from 10am until 5pm, and on the Sunday from 11am until 4pm.

Wind of change

In the December issue, Louise Addison reminded us of hazards at sea around Britain, especially in the age of sail.

Seaford is a bit notorious in this respect. Not only does it hold something of a record in the number of ships lost in one night, more than two hundred vessels have come to grief in the bay over the years. Unlike in Cornwall, the Seaford Shags did not need to lure ships on to the shore.

In bad weather, they arrived anyway. Today, wrecks and strandings are less frequent, but when the wind blows, old wreckage is still washed up as a reminder.

One change from the past is the recent naming of storms by the Met Office to engage the public. They usually roll in off the Atlantic, often starting as more powerful hurricanes in the Caribbean, and affect the land and sky, as well as the sea. Last October, on the anniversary of the Great Storm thirty years earlier, Storm Ophelia gave us a memorable red sun and yellow sky for a day or two, which would surely have inspired the artist J M W Turner back in the age of sail. The colour was due to fine dust and wildfire debris in the atmosphere, drawn from as far away as North Africa and Southwest Europe.

Storm Brian altered the local map for a couple of months because the Cuckmere stopped running straight out to sea as shown on the Ordnance Survey Explorer. At low tide, it curved around to the West opposite the old coastguard station. The river mouth filled with shingle, and the river washed

away prehistoric deposits which were fortunately investigated a year ago. To the East of the haven a new puzzle appeared at low tide, this time of riveted, rusty iron or steel with straps and shackles. As autumn changed to winter, Storm Eleanor washed up something much finer and lighter back in the bay from the age of flight.

The days are getting longer now, but the windy season is not over yet.

Out to sea, the wind farm has taken shape this past year, the most serious attempt to harness the wind since the age of sail.

Teddy Treats and The Royal Society of St George

the cost of the coach to take 20 children and 12 adults to the Panto in Eastbourne, and now was able to give them a further £300 grant from the Charitable Trust of The Royal Society of St George to help make the outing even more special for the youngsters. In the presence of the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Linda Wallraven, branch President Laurie Holland presented the cheque to Brenda Edwards from Teddy Treats. It was through Rob Willis (AKA Santa and Elvis) and friend Tony, that the cost of the panto tickets was raised. President Laurie Holland said: ‘What a lovely privilege it is to help give a special treat to these children at Christmas time.’

Seaford Photographic Society The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) held its first ‘Masters of Print’ competition in October and this was open to over 40,000 camera club members from all over the UK. Just 59 prints were selected to go forward to the subsequent exhibition, held at the R K Burt Gallery in London during December. We are delighted to report that ‘Walk in the Snow’ (photo below), by our very own Jack Taylor, was not only one of those selected for the exhibition but also won a Silver Medal. Many congratulations to Jack for this national award. This is a great example of a composite image, made from more than one photo and then combined using Photoshop or other software. Photography is not just about taking pictures as a record of something you have seen; there has always been a creative element to producing the final image as well. It is often quoted that, back in the days of film, between 50% and 90% of what makes a great photo used to be achieved in the darkroom. With digital photography there is now much more scope for us all to try some of these creative techniques.

Back to the usual club news now. We had two set-subject projected image competitions in December, on the themes of ‘Low Light’ and ‘Abstract’. Unfortunately the visiting judge was unable to attend on the night, so our club secretary Gary Carter stepped in to replace him. First place in the ‘Low Light’ competition went to Cathryn Mantovani for her lovely view of the

The ‘Abstract’ competition is notoriously

difficult to judge and Gary did a splendid job.

The winner this year was Arthur Willmer for his study of shapes, colours and textures entitled ‘Underside of Roof Tiles’ (photo left). Second place was taken by Janice Hewitt’s very creative and colourful image called ‘Spirals’ (photo below right).

We were due to have a lecture by Landscape photographer Colin Westgate but this had to be cancelled due to ill health.

Instead we held a practical evening, including a talk by club member Garry Bisshopp on making your own photobooks from scratch. This was a fascinating insight into some of the different bookbinding techniques and how they can be used to make a photobook. Garry also showed us some of the many beautiful hand-crafted books he had created for his award-winning images.

To round off the year we had a Christmas quiz evening and annual raffle.

We meet every Friday evening from September to May in the Martello Room at Seaford Constitutional Club and if you think you might be interested in joining just come along to one of our meetings to see whether you like it. For more information see our website www.seafordps.org.uk.

Some of the proceeds from Michael and Pippa Logan’s Charity Garden Party last year, plus generous donations, have enabled the Friends of Seaford to become proud sponsors of the Fahnjah Public School, Eastern Liberia. 280 children will now receive a daily meal of either rice and peas or corn soya porridge for a whole year whilst at school, under the umbrella of the registered charity Mary’s Meals. It costs just £13.60 a year to provide a lunch in a place of education for a year.

On behalf of the children, a big thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to this project. Plans are already underway for this year’s Garden Party, to be held 1st July at 31 Sutton Avenue. We look forward to seeing you at the event.

Seaford Plauschgruppe & Twinning News Seaford’s GermanConversation group, the PLAUSCHGRUPPE, will be continuing its monthly meets.

On 6th December 2017, 9 members of the Friends of Bönningstedt delivered the coup de grâce to the Seaford Twinning Association, donating the remaining balance to a St Wilfrid’s Hospice collecting tin, and closed the books. Ironically friends from Bönningstedt, which remains as Seaford’s twin town, were here in November. They visited the Harry Potter Studio Tour and saw the Lord Mayor’s Show with Seaford friends.

Former members of STA and their friends are invited to their traditional Twinners’ Chinese New Year Lunch at Tang’s Restaurant. This is on Sunday 18th February, and intending diners should book with Liz Riley on liz_riley18@hotmail.co.uk or 01323 896315.

Seaford Rambling Club

From the South Downs to Rome

Seaford Ramblers have had a very successful year, with 150 scheduled walks in 2017.

Very few of these were cancelled owing to bad weather, though two notable casualties were the Fish & Chip Walk in August and the Mary Burton Memorial Walk in December. Many old favourites were revisited, such as Pelham House Tower, Birling Gap and Cornish Farm, the four villages (Bishopstone to Alfriston), Hope Gap & Cuckmere Haven and all Seven Sisters, but there have been many new walks to try, locally and up in the Weald.

We meet at the War Memorial and some walks start from there, but most involve a bus or car journey to the start. We are most grateful to the Number 12 bus, which links us to many convenient starting or finishing points from Eastbourne Pier to Ovingdean.

Not content with exploring Sussex, the club organised a walking holiday to Weymouth in May, when 29 members enjoyed a week of long and short walks. Highlights included a walk to Studland Bay, being awed by the Agglestone Rock or Devil’s Anvil, amazed by a visit to the Cern Abbas Giant and inspired at Portland Island where they saw the Olympic Ring and some stunning sculptures.

Further afield, ten of the group walked the Via Francigena, 130 kms of the ancient pilgrimage route from France to Rome. They averaged 10 to 15 kms a day in temperatures of 23/25ºC. This was a planned walking holiday and luggage was taken on to the next hotel each day. The route varied, sometimes along motorways, along rough tracks and dusty roads but also through shady olive and hazelnut groves and woodland.

Finally, they had four nights in Rome sightseeing the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and Coliseum.

Social events of the Club included a Skittle tournament at Barcombe, the summer walk and social at Bishopstone, the Annual Dinner at Blatchington Golf Club, and the End of Year Walk and Lunch at Bishopstone.

Soups, simple and sophisticated

Noel Gallagher famously said that his brother Liam was ‘like a man with a fork in a world of soup’. So unless, like Liam, you are deficient in the cutlery department, you can enjoy this month’s recipes. I’ve chosen two vegetable soups from the BBC Good Food website. Either works as a decent lunch, especially if served with a chunk of fresh crusty bread, and the parsnip one with its Asian flavours will make a good starter to an evening meal.

Both need to be whizzed down with a hand blender or food processer, but it is well worth the effort to achieve a silky smooth soup rather than a vegetable stew. These are vegetarian dishes, but if you are not too fussed about that, chicken stock works well for the liquid.

Leek and Potato Soup

Serves 6

Ingredients

1 tbsp vegetable oil; 1 onion, sliced; 225g/8oz potatoes, cubed; 2 medium leeks, sliced; 1.2 litres/2 pints vegetable stock; 150ml/5fl oz double cream or crème fraiche; salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Method

Heat the oil in a large pan and add the onions, potatoes and leeks. Cook for 3-4 minutes until starting to soften.

Add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil. Season well and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Whizz with a hand blender or in a blender until smooth.

Reheat in a clean pan, stir in the cream or crème fraiche, heat through and serve.

Serves 6

A small knob of butter; 2 garlic cloves, sliced; small piece fresh root ginger, peeled and sliced; 6 large

parsnips, peeled and chopped; 1 tsp cumin seed; 1 tsp coriander seed; 2 cardamom pods; 1 tbsp garam masala; 1.2l vegetable stock; 150ml pot double cream. To serve: 1 tsp olive oil; 1 tsp toasted cumin seeds; 1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced; coriander leaves.

Method

Heat the butter in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook for a few mins to soften. Throw in the garlic and ginger, cook for 1 min more, then add the parsnips and spices. Cook for a few mins until fragrant. Pour over the stock and gently simmer for 30 mins. Add most of the cream, bring to the boil, then turn off the heat.

Blitz the soup until completely smooth in a blender or with a stick blender. The soup can now be chilled, then frozen for up to 3 months. Serve in bowls, drizzled with remaining cream and the olive oil, scattered with cumin seeds, sliced chilli and coriander leaves.

Seaford Striders

The Mince Pie 10 Mile 2017

Approximately 400 runners braved some very wet and windy conditions on 12th December to run in the Annual Mince Pie 10 Mile event, which is organised by the Seaford Striders as its major charitable fundraising event.

This multi-terrain course, which has been voted one of the UK’s top ten races by Runner’s World magazine, is extremely popular and this year’s race limit of 500 places was once again sold out weeks in advance.

The start and early stages of the race saw runners being flanked my motorcyclists from SERV Sussex (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers), who once again ensured that the runners had a very fitting send-off.

The rain made for slippery conditions underfoot on the off road sections, particularly the downhill section to Pickers Hill Farm and along past Saltdean Football Club near the halfway point. The rain, together with the strong winds that prevailed throughout the race, ensured that the course records are safe for another year.

Running extremely well given the weather conditions, this year’s winner was James Baker from Chichester AC in a time of 58:53, with the first female runner being Ali Guihen from Brighton & Hove AC in 1:09:48. Seaford Striders were all involved with marshalling on the day so didn’t have any runners in the race. Sadly, race sponsor David Jordan, Seaford Estate Agents, had intended running but had to pull out before the event with an injury. Seaford Striders remain indebted to him for his continued sponsorship of this event, together with Inter Sport, who provided prizes for the first three ladies and

the first three men to cross the line, together with a large number of spot prizes, which went to the many runners who turned out in fancy dress.

Our most grateful thanks are reserved for all the many marshals and helpers from Seaford Striders, and their family and friends, together with all the other helpers, who gave up their valuable time on a Sunday to once again make the Mince Pie 10 Mile event such a smooth running success – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Most importantly, a substantial sum has been raised for this year’s chosen charity – Headway, East Sussex. This organisation offers rehabilitation and support services for people with acquired brain injuries, their families and carers. How do you like your pancakes?

13th February is Shrove Tuesday and I will be tossing pancakes with the best of them. Usually I am a traditionalist and favour lemon and sugar topping, but this year in the interests of research I canvassed my friends for their favourite sweet and savoury pancake fillings, and tried them out. Here are my top seven.

a revelation. The liqueur works brilliantly with the fruit, and the hot pancakes with cold ice cream is a sublime combination. Clearly I have classy friends!

Blueberries and maple syrup: This contribution from an American friend goes well with thick or thin pancakes. She tops hers with bacon, but you can leave that out. If you like.

Mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon: A British

brunch-style pancake, or maybe a savoury supper.

Nutty chocolate spread and banana: This

Wilted spinach and Ricotta cheese: Sprinkle

tasty filling bulks the pancakes out, and makes the batter go further. Perfect if there are lots of people at your pancake supper.

Fresh mango and Greek yoghurt with a splash of Cointreau: Very sophisticated and

utterly delicious.

Fruits of the forest with vanilla ice cream and a splash of Amaretto liqueur: This one was

with a little fresh nutmeg and this makes a very tasty vegetarian supper.

Stewed rhubarb and crème fraîche: You can

prepare your rhubarb as tart or sweet as you like. I liked mine tart. The crème fraîche works really well with it. I scraped some vanilla seeds into mine and beat them in before serving. This is officially my new favourite way to eat pancakes.

Youth Theatre’s Confidence Courses a Remarkable Success A series of ‘fun shops’ for children to learn about confidence, self esteem and resilience has proved a big success at a Seaford theatre.

Members of Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ) enjoyed six weekly sessions working with local mum, Wendy Reed, who started Remarkable Kids to help children feel good about themselves. The free course finished just before Christmas and was held at the Barn Theatre in Seaford and funded by the Chalk Cliff Trust.

Paula Woolven, SMTJ’s founder and director, said: “We were delighted to be offered the opportunity to work with the Remarkable Kids’ programme for selfesteem thanks to funding from the Chalk Cliff Trust. It gave us an opportunity to continue our commitment to the great things that performing and creative arts can bring to children and young people. Wendy has made a massive impression on the participants of the scheme.

The workshops (fun shops) are entertaining, empowering, encouraging and many other positive things beginning with E!” Wendy, who is a former professional actress, said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with these wonderful young people over the six fun shops, we don’t call them workshops as that sounds far too dull.

It’s never been more vital to equip young people with techniques and skills to boost their self-confidence and resilience due to the constant pressures social media can put upon their shoulders. The course involves a mixture of drama techniques, self-defence, discussion and games.

Children and young people can be taught how to build their confidence and self-esteem just like they can learn about Maths, English or Drama Studies.” As part of Remarkable Kids community payback policy Wendy donated £120 to local charity CTLA Community Transport.

Showtime for Ylena – A Christmas Carol

Ylena Lucy Green, (photo left) who was a member of the Chyngton Youth Academy, needs to raise over £130,000 for lifesaving surgery. Her friends at Chyngton Youth Academy decided they wanted to help her raise the funds by putting on two performances of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. St James’ Trust also donated their rooms for rehearsals and Seaford Head School offered their facilities for the show. For three days, local children and young people plus present and former members of the Academy rehearsed tirelessly for the show.

The show began with full cast singing the Twelve Days of Christmas in a colourful opening scene. In this production, the main characters were the two miserly brothers, Ebenezer and Elijah Scrooge, performed by Sami Green and Zachariah Green, who both gave outstanding performances. On Christmas Eve, the Scrooge brothers were visited by the chained ghost of their deceased business partner, Jacob Marley (Cyrus Hafezparast) – cue the spine-chilling, clinking chains sound effects! Marley warns the brothers they will be visited by three ghosts that night, one of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future.

As the clock struck one, the first spirit appeared and reminded the brothers of their happier but lonely younger days, they see their beloved sister Fran, Mr Fezziwig their old employer and the sad fiancée Isabella who ends her relationship with one of the brothers after she realises that he will never love her as much as he loves money.

The second spirit, the ghost of Christmas Present takes the brothers to a joy-filled market of people – a wonderful atmospheric scene involving the whole cast dancing and singing. They also see their nephew Fred (Charlie Herridge) with his family at Christmas and visit their underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit (Aaron Davies) with his family and his youngest son, Tiny Tim (Ruby Clough) – a happy boy who is seriously ill. The spirit informs

them that Tiny Tim will die soon unless the course of events changes.

The last, black-hooded spirit appears and shows them a Christmas Day in the future and the death of two men who are disliked by many locals. The brothers see lots of rejoicing at the news of these deaths, however they are alarmed to see their possessions stolen and Bob Cratchit and his family mourning the passing of Tiny Tim. The ghost then shows the brothers the graves of the deceased men, whose tombstones bear the names, Scrooge!

The brothers awake on Christmas Day relieved that they survived the night and both appear very changed and happy men. They decide to visit Fred’s family to celebrate Christmas and send a large turkey to Bob Cratchit’s home as well as giving him an increase in pay. From that day forward, the brothers decide to treat everyone with great kindness, generosity and compassion, embodying the spirit of Christmas.

This cast comprising of children and young adults were brilliant, with confident acting skills, enthusiastic singing and well-rehearsed choreography. As well as polished performances by some of the more experienced cast there were very endearing solo songs by the younger members, especially Tiny Tim. I particularly enjoyed the Punch and Judy scene, with Joshua Knight as Punch and Caitlin Maybank as Judy, as well as the hilarious performance of ‘Champagne Charlie’ including full on cockney accents! Other very welcome songs included I Say Goodbye to Love, Deck the Halls, Down Among the Dead Men and O Tannenbaum. The final performance closed with rapturous applause and a very well-deserved standing ovation. Well done to everyone both in front and behind the scenes! What a wonderful performance for such a worthwhile cause. So far the production has raised over £2,300. Many local businesses and individuals also supported Showtime for Ylena with raffle prizes and donations. The club’s 2017 Christmas Dinner was held for the first time at the Constitutional Club in Seaford.

The food was home-cooked

and delicious, and the Constitutional Club went out of their way to create a lovely atmosphere and make everyone feel very welcome.

The club members, as can be seen, greatly enjoyed the food and company, and felt it was a very fitting way to end the year.

At the first meeting of 2018, on 10th January, Tony Hope presented his excellent, award-winning display entitled ‘The Long White Cloud’. This display of postcards, ephemera and stamps brought to life Tony’s memories of his years spent in New Zealand.

The next meeting, on 14th February, will be ‘Irish Postcards and Postal History’ given by Florence McCarthy.

It’s our way of making sure that new members get the chance to talk to course leaders and for course leaders to share their knowledge in an informal way. The new members of today will probably be the course leaders of tomorrow!

We’ve got a lot happening in February, beginning with the Tea Party at the Constitutional Club on the 5th, when James Dickenson will give a talk about William the Conqueror. Tickets as always are £4. Please contact the organiser on 01323 895598 before 10am on the day of the talk to reserve your ticket, or to cancel if you cannot come. Places are limited. This is a members-only event.

On the same day there is an outing to the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester, followed by a visit to the Novium Museum to see the exhibition about Tim Peake.

We have our Winter Talk at the Downs on 5th February between 2–4pm when Tim Mc Donald will be giving a talk about Cathars and Rennes-le-Château. This is free for members with tea and coffee provided.

We had a lovely outing to Hever Castle on 12th December. It was a cold, crisp and very sunny day and we had a private guided tour around the castle before going around on our own and into the grounds. There was so much to see, both inside and outside the castle.

It was interesting to see how the castle had developed since being in the Bullen (Boleyn) family in the 15th century when it was just a Mediaeval Hall House, to when the Astors took it over in the early 20th century and transformed it into a really comfortable residence.

We were told about how not only the interior, but the landscape was changed dramatically, involving changing the course of the River Eden so that the Moats could be put in place and a ‘Tudor Village’ built. Fortunately changing the course of the river probably ensured that the drastic flooding which had previously taken place, would not happen again, thus saving a valuable piece of our heritage.

The Seaford Striders have always welcomed new members of all ages and abilities, and has a thriving junior section, which meets each Wednesday at the Salts Car Park, Richmond Road at 5.55pm until 6.45pm. The senior club has coached two separate ‘Couch to 5k’ groups during 2017. This has seen an expansion in club members over a wide range of ages and abilities, from teenagers to runners in their seventies, proving that age need not be a barrier to keeping fit and healthy. The senior club meets at the Downs Leisure Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm. The exception is the 1st Monday of the month when Striders meet at the Lewes Running Track 7.30-8.30pm.

The annual membership costs just £16 for an adult with a reduced rate of £8 for unemployed, retired members and juniors, and the joining fee includes a free club T-shirt or vest. Each evening contains a structured training session, whilst still catering for mixed abilities.

DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY

Are you feeling guilty about being happy?

If you’re someone who feels guilty about being happy, take note: Everyone deserves happiness in their lives.

When I ask clients what they want from life, the stock answer is usually ‘to be happy’. Interestingly, often when I see people reach a state of happiness they say they feel guilty about being happy. We wish for happiness, but when it comes we can feel too overwhelmed with guilt to enjoy it. There is a misplaced idea that by feeling happy you are taking happiness away from someone else or that you don’t deserve to be happy. Let me put everyone straight on this point: nobody benefits when you allow guilt to interfere with your ability to feel joy. Everybody deserves the right to be happy.

Stop Worrying That The Joy Will Disappear

Accept that you won’t feel happy all the time. We all experience a range of emotions; joy, sadness, fear and anger. Life would be very boring if we didn’t. When you’re feeling happy relish the feeling at that moment. Don’t spoil the joy by fretting that it might disappear. Celebrate the fact that we experience a tapestry of emotions, it’s what makes life interesting and allows us to appreciate happiness. Don’t hold happiness in a terrified vice grip, let it sit with you and enjoy.

How to Stop Feeling Guilty Give Yourself Permission about Being Happy

Look To See Where The Guilt Comes From

Ask yourself why you should feel guilty. Once you understand why you feel guilty you can make changes so that you can allow yourself to be happy, then you can move past the guilt.

Don’t Let Others Dictate How You Feel

Sometimes when we are suffering from a bereavement or are surrounded by someone who is going through a rough time, we may feel that it’s not fair that we feel happy when other people are struggling. We might worry about appearing insensitive or unfeeling if we look happy.

If a friend or relative is sick or has passed away, feeling obliged to be sad and miserable doesn’t mean you care more for that person. It is possible to be sad and empathetic and be happy at the same time. Obviously, we need to be conscious of how people around us are feeling, but I think sometimes we feel that we are rubbing salt into the wound if we are happy around people who

If you feel you don’t deserve to be happy, assess how you got to this happy state. I’m sure you’ve been a good friend, you work hard, you’re kind, you may have had counselling or therapy, you may have decided to lead a healthier life. I’m sure you will have earned your happiness.

Although, as I have said, happiness doesn’t need to be earned; it is the right of every human being to feel joy.

A colleague gave me a book for my birthday, The Book Of Joy. The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu met to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday and to mark the occasion by creating The Book Of Joy. Both men have faced extreme adversity but despite their history of hardship and witnessing the terrible plight of others they manage to live a life that overflows with joy. I offer you a leaf of happiness from The Book Of Joy. Be Happy.

A DAY OF MEDITATION AND CREATIVITY

Thursday 1st March 9am – 5pm, Florence House, Southdown Road

This will be a day of deep relaxation, meditation and ritual to cleanse and rejuvenate us spiritually and physically for the demands of the coming year. The day will include Yoga Nidra, a ‘sound bath’, meditations, creative exercises, chanting, visualisations, shamanic practices and ritual.

The main focus for the day will be on our bodies and our well-being. We will start with a creative exercise that leads to a better understanding of how the stresses of day-to-day life have impacted on our bodies this year.

We will consider the links between our mind/body/spirit using energy work and a visualisation.

After a break we will go on a Medicine Walk around the grounds of Florence House to connect with the Spirits of Nature, and ask them for guidance and healing.

After the delicious Florence House lunch there will be time to respond creatively to our experiences from the Walk using whatever feels right for each individual: talking, poetry, writing, painting, clay, drawing or collage.

Finally, with shamanic drumming to ground us, we will use a simple chanting ritual to give thanks and to look to the future for ourselves, our loved ones and our beautiful, precious planet.

A simple way to overcome dementia communication barriers A leading dementia care centre in Seaford is keen to share its advice and successes in caring for people with dementia. Its February top tip for anyone caring for someone with dementia is to use a simple but very effective communication aid.

Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has implemented the use of simple but very effective aids for its residents, called ‘Communication Cards’.

‘I feel’ expressions are the first set of communication cards, including faces and words to describe how the person is feeling. Examples of emotions on the cards include worried, excited, sad and cross.

Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: ‘Members of staff at Clifden House carry communication cards with them. They find them useful for engaging with residents and help overcome communication difficulties.

‘It is important for us to understand how residents are feeling and these cards are a great help. They allow us to give a more focused standard of care, and help to minimise misunderstandings and potential frustration for the resident.’

Communication Cards are also very handy to use alongside everyday conversation to keep residents aware of how they are feeling and to let them know that it’s normal for them to have trouble communicating.

Communication Cards are pictorial representations of common emotions and needs, and have proven to be an exceptionally useful mechanism for residents – allowing dementia sufferers to quickly and easily express themselves clearly.

A person with dementia can often have difficulty communicating. They can struggle to find the right words and frequently repeat words or become stuck on a certain syllable. This can be very frustrating and often distressing for dementia sufferers.

Rotarians Clive Rimell and Rodney Reed went along to their weekly get-together and were shown how it all works – a very efficient system is in place to process all the food donations that come in. Clive said ‘We are very pleased to be able to support this very good cause, as there is clearly a need for it.

Our donation will help them to provide a little bit of extra help at Christmas time.’

Seaford Head School Food Donations

Helena White, a student at Seaford Head School, organised fellow students at the school to donate items of food in the run up to Christmas, and the Martello Rotary Club volunteered to transport these items to Seahaven Storehouse. In the last few days of term, all these items were collected and duly delivered to the Storehouse – there was so much of it that several journeys were made. We would like to congratulate Helena for all her hard work in co-ordinating this amazing collection, which was very gratefully received and will have made a significant difference to many families over the Christmas period.

Seaford Afternoon Flower Club The club meets this month on 15th February, when Stephen MacDonnell will demonstrate ‘A Backward Glance’. Stephen is a very entertaining and talented demonstrator, and I am sure we will all enjoy a delightful afternoon. Our competition is entitled ‘Bare Necessities’, using foliage only, no flowers, and this will prove a challenge for our members at this time of year.

The club rounded off last year in a very festive fashion. In November, members participated in a Christmas workshop using an attractive pave design referring to a cobblestone street. Plants are massed to form a purely horizontal pattern, creating a cobblestone effect. This proved to be a most entertaining afternoon and provided members with ideas for future designs.

In December we were treated to a demonstration entitled ‘A Christmas Cocktail’ by our chairman, Georgie Wall. Her creations were inspiring and innovative, and we are lucky to have such a talented ex-demonstrator in our club. Georgie judged our competition entitled ‘A Golden Glow’, and provided constructive criticism for us.

Once again we were delighted by the number of entries to the competition, especially amongst the novice class, some of whom show enormous talent. The afternoon was rounded off with a Christmas tea and lucky dip.

Our new season begins on 15th March with our AGM, and we have a full and varied programme of demonstration, workshops and competitions for 2018.

Why not come and join us? Our fees for this year have been held at £28, which is fantastic value for 11 meetings.

February once again. Hopefully Seaford Kurlers will have a good year and gain popularity for the sport of New Age Kurling. We live in an increasingly digitalised world.

The rapid rise of online services is relentless, and can make life easier, but can also bring its own problems. Every industry and service has embraced new technology to some degree.

For some it works splendidly, like buying books, booking travel or downloading music. But for other, more personal transactions, dealing with an onlineonly service can feel faceless, remote and lacking real expertise. This can apply to estate agency, and to legal services, especially conveyancing.

A conveyancer is a solictor who specialises in the legal aspects of buying and selling a property.

And they play an important part in making sure transactions happen smoothly.

There are now plenty of online-only conveyancing services. They are often cheaper than traditional solicitors, but that comes with its own price. In our experience the online conveyancing services can be tricky to deal with.

They lack the personal touch which we feel is needed when someone is buying or selling a home. It’s very often the biggest financial transaction people make, and it’s reassuring to be able to pop in and see the

solicitor who is working on your behalf. You can’t do that with an online-only service.

There’s often a lack of a dedicated conveyancer working on your behalf. And we’ve seen cases where several different conveyancers have worked on a deal, slowing the process up and causing issues for the clients, especially when unforeseen problems arise.

We don’t recommend online-only property solicitors for these reasons.

The good news is that Seaford has several very good conveyancing solicitors who you can pop into and see. They are all based locally, and in our experience, offer personal, professional and dedicated services.

So, when it comes to choosing a conveyancer you’d do well to make it personal and keep it local.

CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS – REVIEW

St Leonard’s Church, 9th December 2017 The choir stands. The church is quiet in hopeful anticipation as Musical Director Adrian White walks to the podium, bows to the collected people, turns and opens the concert. AND WHAT A CONCERT! – once again exceeding the expectations of the packed throng (extra chairs needed to be found to accommodate everybody).

Adrian had selected a varied, well-balanced programme; the choir was very well rehearsed; choir discipline was excellent – all the makings of a really professional performance. The large and enthusiastic audience loved it and was full of praise for Concentus. Comments included: ‘We loved the variety in the music and the way the choir could move so smoothly from the complexities of Mendelssohn’s Elijah to the quiet peacefulness of Christmas Sanctus – a beautiful contrast’; ‘they get better and better each time I hear them’; ‘it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to hear a choir of such quality and professionalism’; and many more in similar vein.

People praised the choir for its use of well-controlled variations in volume and pace to express the many shades of feelings and emotions in the pieces sung – such as tenderness, peace and love in Christmas Sanctu’ (L and S Dengler), The Peace of God (J Rutter) and A La Nanita Nana (G Gilpin); excitement and joy in God Bless Us Everyone (G Ballard/A Sylvestri) and Jingle Bells (J Pierpont); nostalgia in Christopher Robin (A A Milne).

Carol of the Bells (K Shaw) was well liked – ‘something new’, ‘unexpected and exciting’;You Raise me Up (B Graham/R Lovland) ‘sent shivers down my back’. The Holy City (S Adams/F Weatherby) was sung beautifully clearly and expressively and the difficult amalgam of soloist (Lynn Large) and choir in O for the Wings of a Dove (Mendelssohn) was executed in a masterly fashion.

The soloists (Karen Hobbs, Lynn Large, Steve Isted) and groups – all drawn from within this talented choir – performed with clarity and sensitivity, and the Paul McCartney number We All Stand Together with the Frog Chorus from the animated film Rupert attracted special acclaim when the Musical Director left the podium to join the small group, giving the audience a glimpse of his fine singing voice and his equally fine sense of humour!

There was communal singing of favourite carols, and many more fine renderings than there is space to mention.

John Ross accompanied the choir on both organ and keyboard, and thoroughly entertained the audience with his magnificent improvisations on the organ. John was kind enough to make special journeys from his new home to play at both concerts. The interval was marked with the opportunity for a glass of wine and a mince pie or two, and there were retiring collections in both Seaford and Eastbourne for the JPK Project charity, which jointly raised £889.36. Jill Parker, chair of the charity, spoke movingly of the aims of the Project to provide assisted living accommodation and skills training for local people with learning disabilities.

Two people were lucky enough to attend the concert for free, having been picked from everyone who had filled in the short exit questionnaire. A standing ovation ended this excellent concert, and people left with smiling faces and a lightness of spirit. So, what has Concentus got in store for their Summer Concerts? Can they really improve on this splendid performance? We had all better make sure we get our tickets early to be certain of getting a seat!

Shrubby Dogwoods

Shrubby dogwoods or Cornus, of which there are many species, are known for their colourful leaves, blossoms, berries and stems. The species known as Cornus alba is grown for its stem colour during the winter months. Starting in autumn with red leaves, the stems then also turn a bright red. These will shine in any winter sun, giving some much needed colour to the garden. Other dogwood cultivars have purple, green, yellow-orange stems, purple autumn leaves, white and yellow flowers and strawberry-like fruits at different times of year. All dogwoods can be planted from October to March in well drained fertile soil, and cope with full sun or partial shade.

They benefit from careful regular pruning, especially in the first few years of their growth.

ith 2018 well underway and spring around the corner, gardens are yearning for attention. There is a certain drabness after so much rain and frost, very little colour, the only positive perhaps is the bulbs that are starting to show – the promise of daffodils in a few weeks. Many of our gardens probably have some empty spaces that need filling with new plants, shrubs or flowers. Ornamental grasses have become popular in recent years and early spring is a good time to plant some of these. Grasses go well with flowers or colourful shrubs and have a calming effect within the garden. The range of grasses now available has grown. Some prefer shade and others a sunny spot, flowering occurs through summer into autumn. There are grasses which originate from cool climates and others from warm ones, so planting needs to be at the correct time. The ones to plant in late spring are from the warmer climes – Miscanthus being one and Spartina another. They will flower after mid-summer, and need a cut back in late winter ready for coming into growth again the following spring. For those with a small garden, some grasses are suitable for

The competition for the evening is 5 Hellebore Flower Heads floating in water. All members should now have received their 2018 schedule with all events for the year listed. If you want to go on any of the outings, early booking is recommended. Check through the Horticultural Show schedule as there are changes to some of the classes and a few new ones have been added. There are 105 different classes, so plenty to choose from.

When it’s blowing a real icy Seaford gale through the beds at our community garden at the Crouch, there are only two places to be: in the cosy polytunnel or in the classroom. So it was that the first Wednesday of the New Year saw a chilly group of women thawing out their fingers in warm compost and grit as they potted cuttings, watched by a couple of men who were sitting waiting for the kettle to boil. And so it was also that as soon as said kettle started to get a steam up everyone bundled into the classroom for mulled wine, tea or coffee to enjoy alongside tempting goodies made by volunteers bent on bringing in 2018 with shed-loads of good will.

Back to the polytunnel, and Magda was planting out box cuttings, a job that should really have been done in November; however the general consensus was that we would get away with it! Magda explained: ‘We cut branches from the mother plant, removed a 20 cm length and took off most of the leaves, then placed the cuttings around the edges of a pot filled with compost and grit.’

‘I’ve been told they won’t do anything in the first year,’ she said, obviously prepared to be patient.

And as for Mandy, she was pointing out pale patches on calendula leaves. ‘It looks like either a viral disease that may be caused by insects or a fungal disease,’ she observed. ‘The enclosed environment in here doesn’t help,’ she said, adding that she planned to take all the leaves off and perform an experiment by putting them outside, in a cold frame.

Meanwhile the cold snap wasn’t putting off the spring bulbs, which were daring to display their tender green tips, and the faithful hellebores were just coming into flower in our shade garden.

That was early January, so what’s going on this month?

There’s a newfound interest in natural plant dyes, and we’re delighted to announce that Christine Moore will be talking in the classroom at 10.15am on Wednesday 7th February, explaining the whys and wherefores of this subject. This talk is open to everyone, not just volunteers, so please scribble a note to yourself in your new year diary, and, however cold it is out there, you can be assured of a warm welcome and a cuppa.

The garden, just behind the Peace Garden, is open every Wednesday from 9.30am until 12.30pm. See you there!

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford December was definitely a busy, but fun, month. The highlight was our Christmas Dinner meeting where everyone got out their bling and enjoyed an excellent dinner... and a secret Santa! We didn’t forget those who might not be enjoying any Christmas fare as we all took a grocery item which was sent on to the food bank.

As a social occasion several members enjoyed a visit to Glyndebourne, where we were given an excellent and informative talk by the guide.

Many of our members are brilliant at craftwork, and, following the coffee morning and sale in November, they all felt delighted and privileged to be able to support East Sussex Young Carers. They attended their party, and were able to help financially with the food for the party and to provide gifts for the youngsters. Also from the money raised from the sale, a cheque will be presented at a later date to Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support group.

Seaford Tree Wardens

Trees and Me

We’ll be featuring stories from our tree wardens about the influence that trees have had on their lives. This month Peter Tattam shares his memories.

When I was four or five, my family moved from the army town of Colchester to a block of flats in the army suburb of London that is Woolwich. My father, a sergeant in the army, had been posted to a new role in the area.

There were simple grounds for the kids to play in but the jewel for us was a plot of land behind the flats, over a wall. ‘Over the wall’ was a wartime bombsite. It consisted of the remains of grand Regency houses that had been hit during the Blitz, the whole area was only about 100 metres by 75 metres but it was a wonderland to us. Untended for 20 years, it was transforming into a young woodland. Near the boundary were two big horse chestnut trees, and along the wall that separated ‘over the wall’ and the grounds of the flats were three fine plane trees. These are the first mature trees I remember. We collected the seeds of the planes to make homemade itching powder to annoy our friends at school. In autumn the annual conker harvest seemed the sole purpose of our existence. The younger members of our tight knit clan would spend hours throwing sticks into the canopy to try and dislodge the conkers because we were too impatient to wait for them to fall. The feeling of elation when you downed one stays with me to this day. The older siblings would climb into the canopy and shake them free. Access up the first twenty feet or so was by way of a makeshift ladder of six inch nails driven into the trunk by nobody knew who. Health and safety didn’t exist in those days and risks were taken that, in hindsight, were life threatening sometimes. My older brother fell fifteen metres from a tree when the branch he was jumping on, to shake free the conkers, snapped. He landed on his back, inches from the sharp stump of a snapped off sapling. I thought he was dead. I remember racing up to our flat yelling that fact to my dad. That was the only time ever that I saw my father run. Fortunately my brother was just winded and was on his feet by the time we got back to him. When my father left the army, we moved and left ‘over the wall’ behind. The army subsequently built houses there, the horse chestnuts have gone, as have two of the three planes (I’ve looked on Google Earth). I haven’t seen

those trees since 1970 but I felt quite emotional yesterday when, through the magic of technology, I saw them gone.

We moved about ten miles away to a 1960s’ council estate in a place called Abbey Wood, named after a fragment of nearby ancient woodland where stood the ruins of an abbey destroyed during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. Other fragments nearby were Castle Woods and Oxleas woods. Lesnes Abbey Woods became my new playground. In the forest we searched for newts and frogs around the abbey’s old fishpond, prehistoric shark’s teeth in the sandy banks along a few of the ancient pathways, and bird’s nests and squirrel’s dreys high in the canopy. Even then, I realised the importance of looking but not touching the wildlife infrastructure. I raced my Raleigh Chopper around those woods, nearly killing myself in the process. When I left school and joined the Merchant Navy, I didn’t see a tree for nearly a year. I don’t ever want to have that experience again!

We bought our second house in 1985 near the village of Bexley. The house looked out over farmland to a birch wood on a small hill. I walked there every day with my dog. During the storm of 1987 hundreds of trees fell, rather than being an unmitigated disaster, it provided new habitats within the wood to explore.

When we moved to Seaford I had never been to the town before. I was gratified to find a forest on my doorstep. Friston forest has become my ‘over the wall’, Lesnes Abbey Woods, Castle Woods and others all rolled into one. Granted I haven’t found any prehistoric shark teeth, but you can’t have everything, can you?

Rake gently with a lawn rake as your lawn is likely to be quite wet still, being careful not to damage the grass • So long as your soil is not too moist and is free from frost, now is a good time to aerate your lawn. Often underrated in domestic lawns, this process allows water, air and nutrients into the soil and to the root zone: stronger roots make for a stronger lawn • Get your mower in good working order for your first cut. Make sure that the blades are in good clean and sharp condition Tips for February/March • As things start to warm up, you can start planning for your scarification if you didn’t do it in the Autumn. Scarifying removes the thatch (living & dead organic matter) and moss, giving space for new grass to grow

Christmas Sleigh of Goodwill Seaford Rotary Club wishes to thank the people of Seaford for the successful Rotary Christmas collections around the streets of Seaford, with Father Christmas in his Sleigh of Goodwill during seventeen December evenings, and the static collections in Broad Street on four Saturday mornings.

The weather was relatively kind this year in that it was generally dry during the collections, albeit very cold on some evenings.

There were 52 participants who undertook the roles of Father Christmas, Contact Man (leader on the night), plus drivers of the sleigh and support drivers, as well as collectors. Many of these did several nights and some Saturdays.

There were three new sleigh drivers this year, and generally these new recruits coped well with the sleigh, although there were occasions when things did not go quite to plan, such as on one evening when the sleigh arrived at the start of the collection without Father Christmas. This omission was however quickly recovered by one of the Rotarian collectors giving Santa a lift to the start of the collection.

The real stars of these collections, as always, were the people of Seaford and their children, who came out to see Father Christmas and flocked around the sleigh.

The kindness of folks was outstanding and enabled us to achieve to collect more than £10,000 during December for the third consecutive year. The total sum raised this year was again another record, exceeding last year’s total by 0.6%. In all, we collected 421 bank notes and 29,575 coins.

All the monies collected, after the deduction of expenses, have been put into our Charitable Trust for spending on good causes in the Seahaven area.

As last year, we received many very favourable comments about our ‘green’ vehicle, which interestingly is slower on the road with a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour, but was faster overall on each of the collections than the previous car towing the trailer carrying the sleigh, and which was also able to access many of the cul-de-sacs throughout Seaford previously not accessible for the car and trailer.

The art historian Kay Blackburn will launch this year’s series of East Blatchington Lectures on Tuesday 6th February at 2.30pm, when her subject is one of the most popular painters of all, the remarkable and tragic Vincent Van Gogh.

His life story is almost as well known as his famous works, and Kay has a huge choice of illustrations to bring to her talk, which will be at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford.

As usual, it will be open to everyone, but also as usual, there is always a big demand for these talks. Tickets are £7, and that includes refreshments, available from the church and from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, at 53 Church Street, Seaford.

Who’s Who In Seaford?

Peter Mercer, Vice Chairman of the Newhaven & District Life Boat Society Peter has lived in Seaford for 13 years. As well as being the Vice Chairman of Newhaven & District Life Boat Association, he is a member of the Wooden Spoon Society, Honorary Life Member Sussex Rugby Football Union, Director Heathfield and Waldron Rugby Football Club and Member of the Chartered Institute of Building. Peter was educated in Brighton and is now retired. He worked as a Construction Manager of a national construction company and was a Senior Partner in a practice of Quantity Surveyors, Cost Engineers and Contract engineers for 30 years, working in many different countries. In 2001, he gained an MA in English Local and Regional History and has written four books on local history. Peter has been married to Cynthia for 55 years, and has two daughters and one son, seven grandchildren, and a Jack Russell called Meggie.

What are your hobbies and interests?

Supporting my rugby club at Heathfield and the Sussex Rugby Union, watching cricket, also being very much involved in supporting the Newhaven Lifeboat over the last ten years and the RNLI over the last forty years.

What do you like best about Seaford? The surrounding Downs, the two rivers, the beach, the friendly atmosphere of the town and our terrific neighbours.

What is your favourite piece of music? ‘Mama Mia’ and music from the shows. Having walked along the Mohne and Elder dams in Germany the inspirational music from the ‘The Dam Busters’ is my all time favourite piece.

What book are you reading at the moment? A Peep into the Past: Brighton in the Olden Time with Glances at the Present

by John George Bishop. The best book written on the history of the town.

Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford?

To sit on the seafront on a fine summer’s day with a cup of coffee and a pair of binoculars, or walk up to Five Lord’s Burgh with Meggie.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Falling through the ice on Rottingdean Pond in 1948 after the village policeman told me to get off.

What is your favourite smell? Perfume.

Which living person do you most admire? The Coxswain Paul Legendre and crewe of the Newhaven Lifeboat.

What is your greatest extravagance? Buying boats.

What makes you sad? Undernourished and very poor children in foreign war-torn countries.

What words or phrases do you most overuse?

You can do it, work and try hard at every thing you do.

How do you relax? Writing and researching local history.

What is your greatest fear? The demise of Great Britain.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Try not to get upset, respect and politeness.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Sailing with the family and walking the Downs around Balsdean, a lost village of Sussex.

What is the first line of your favourite poem?

There’s a breathless hush in the Close tonight Ten to make and the match to win…

What is your favourite journey?

Along the quiet coastal road to Eastbourne.

How would you spend a million pounds? Securing the family’s future, supporting the Newhaven Lifeboat and the Wooden Spoon.

What is your most memorable learning experience?

Doing my MA in one year after retirment!

What keeps you awake at night? Differentiation!

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

To work hard and save for a rainy day.

What would your motto be? Carpe diem.

Which person in history would you most like to meet? Having been to his grave in Holland, Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, who led the raid on the Rhur dams in May 1943.

What or who is the greatest love in your life?

My wife and family, and little Meggie.

Anything else you may like to include?

I was born in Woodingdean when it was a downland village and first went fishing on board my grandfather’s boat from Sleepers Hollow in Newhaven harbour in about 1947. This was my introduction to the sea and sailing over the past 52 years around the shores of Europe and beyond. It also started my respect for the Lifeboats, as did my grandfather who gave in kind to the service. They in turn rewarded me with the Bronze Badge for services in 2014 which I treasure and pretend to share with my much loved grandad.
