Welcome...

to the August issue of Seaford Scene. At the time of writing, the COVID-19 restrictions are continuing to lift and things are getting back to some kind of normality. It’s great to see so many shops and businesses opening up again in the town, seeing familiar faces and catching up with family and friends who we haven’t seen since before the lockdown – wonderful! It’s still a very strange time though, social distancing remains in place and wearing face coverings in shops is now mandatory – I do hope you are all adapting to this new way of living. I’m delighted to be bringing you another printed issue, keeping you up to date with the clubs and organisations in and around Seaford. Once again we have news from Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team – if you require support of any kind during this crisis, turn to page 4 for more details. Despite the restrictions, celebrations for Seaford’s Sussex Day (page 12) and Veterans and Armed Forces Day (page 109) took place in July. Find out what’s been happening at Seaford Community Garden on page 74 and what was the Lockdown Butterfly Project (page 24) all about? Fancy a challenge? Turn to page 96 for our Maritime quiz or try doing some outdoor exercises to improve you health and well being (see page 65). All this and so much more in your August issue. Stay safe, alert and enjoy! Fran Tegg. Editor

Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team – Moving forward Phone line hours: Mon to Fri: 8.30am – 5.30pm, Sat: 8.30am – 1.30pm. Tel: 01323 899054 As I write this we are just easing out of Lockdown and shops and businesses are reopening. This means that many of you will now be getting out and about a bit more and getting your independence back... as well as an overdue haircut! Many of our volunteers have gone back to work as well, which means that we can’t always guarantee to meet your emergency needs on the same day, so please be mindful of this when ringing us or filling in the online form. We hope you will still be supporting the local businesses that have delivered to you during Lockdown – Burts Bakery, Walbrins, Scoop and Weigh, Wynnes and Around a Pound to name a few. Morrisons have set up a service for you to ring up and get delivery for next day shopping (0345 61161111 option 5) from their limited list plus 10 items. ONLY on a Friday they are also delivering prescriptions so if you use their pharmacy make sure the script is there earlier in the week and ask for the service. Both Morrisons and Sainsburys seem to have plenty of Click and Collect slots as well now, plus their delivery availability has increased. All these services will help you to manage in the ‘new normal’ and get back in control of your daily lives. The Seafriends ‘time for a chat’ service is also up and running and can be contacted via our helpline. In the meantime we’re still going to be here for you and to respond to anyone who suddenly has to go into isolation, but this means we need your help to enable us to pay for the phone line, PPE and other things we need to keep everyone safe.

Many people have offered to donate to support us in the last few weeks but previously we did not have a means to collect any money. There is no obligation from those we are helping but we have set up a GoFundMe which you can find on our Facebook page and website, or ring our helpline 01323 899054 if you are not online and we will tell you what to do. A big thank you to everyone who has already done so. Remember you can also contact us on our website https://svet.proffer.org.uk and fill in the request form for support. Thank you to everyone who has pulled together to make this possible.

Martello Rotary Seaford

What does the future hold for Rotary?

I hope this update finds you all well and coping with the ongoing new normal. As restrictions ease we are completely aware of the importance of social distancing and appropriate hygiene practices. We are also increasingly aware that the “new world” into which we are emerging has fundamental differences from previous years. As a club we will not be able to raise funds by running bars at events, organising the Seaford Proms, the Seaford Half Marathon or collecting at events such as the Bonfire Society fireworks night. This has made us take a concentrated look at what it really means to be a member of Rotary, supporting the community and maintaining the Service Before Self ideal. We have made a fundamental shift in how we intend to support the local community, how we raise funds, liaise with the community, and perform a function that adds value without causing risk. We recognise that we need to attract new members by working in a flexible and open fashion, removing some of the more traditional perceptions of Rotary. Those of you who have been helping in the Covid-19 crisis may be looking for alternative channels to maintain your involvement within community support, and we may be just the organisation to talk to. We need volunteers at all levels to become involved in helping us to: l work with the Local Council and interested Friends groups in the maintaining development of green spaces in Seaford; l assist in environmental programmes such as tree planting; l support those still in isolation or who need to be helped back into the community; l provide delivery services for those who are housebound; l support our Living History programme where we share with pupils what it was like to live 20, 30, 40 or more years ago before the mobile phone or tablets arrived on the scene; l support our general social programmes that help

6

reduce social isolation, create awareness, and build community structures for the future.

We would love people to join Rotary but realise this is sometimes too much of a commitment. If you can spare a few hours a month or more, please do get in touch and see if you can help. If you would like more information email us at: contactmartellorotary@gmail.com.

Virtual run

As we cannot hold the Half Marathon this year, we have decided to hold a Virtual Marathon instead. As many of you will know, the Martello Rotary Club in Seaford has had to cancel the Half Marathon planned for July, and a further race, a Seaford Head 10K planned for September is in some considerable doubt. So as an alternative we offered a virtual event during July, with all monies raised going to a mix of charities. For more information go to; https://race-nation.co.uk/ register/seaford-martello-rotary/virtual-run

Looking for a calendar for next year?

Seaford Community Calendars are now on sale, with beautiful pictures and all proceeds go to local charities: the RNLI at Newhaven and the Youth counselling Project in Seaford. The cover picture, and also the cover photo on this issue of Seaford Scene magazine, was taken by Kevan Wilkx and is an example of the wonderful photographs shown throughout the calendar. There are two sizes to fit most spaces and the cost is £8 and £6. respectively. Current outlets are Badgers Inks, Barwell’s the Solicitors and JXP Financial Services. You can also search for ‘Seaford Community Calendar’ on Facebook and join our page. If anyone is willing to sell them for us please contact Nick White on nick88nick@gmail.com. Great Green Bush Cricket

The sound of silence

I’m a huge fan of sci-fi B-movies and they don’t come any better (or worse) than 1957’s Beginning of the End. It’s the usual story; overeager government scientists intent on increasing crop yield inadvertently create giant irradiated grasshoppers the size of doubler-decker buses, which set about destroying Chicago. There are some similar creatures lurking around Sussex. OK, they’re not going to come stomping around Sompting any day soon but they’re still mighty impressive.

of ‘Now That’s What I Call Stridulation’. I played it this morning and track 24 had gone. It was there a few years ago but now… silence. I’ve started to lose my crickets. The beginning of the end.

The Great Green Bush Cricket can claim to be Britain’s biggest insect. Yet this Godzilla of the undergrowth is surprisingly hard to see. Its long, leaf-like body blends in amongst the brambles rendering it almost invisible. Bug eyes, impressive jaws and twirling antennae give it some monster movie credentials, but there’s nothing to fear from this harmless native.

It isn’t just me who will be hearing less wildlife in the future. Our countryside is becoming quieter as crickets, bees and birds vanish. Wildflower meadows, the home to crickets and grasshoppers, have been lost and the wildlife that depends on them has silently disappeared. The ‘Silent Spring’ predicted by Rachel Carson in 1962 has seeped across every season. This August, get out and listen to the sounds of summer before they fade.

There are about 35 species of crickets and grasshoppers (Orthoptera) in Britain. Crickets differ from grasshoppers by having much longer, thread-like antennae and they ‘sing’ by rubbing their wings together (while grasshoppers rub their legs against their wings). This song, or stridulation, is the male’s way of romancing a female – who, if interested, will reply. The best chance of finding the Great Green Bush Cricket is to head out on a warm August evening and listen for their downland duets – a loud, incessant rattle. Imagine an enthusiastic maraca player. I recently went for a walk through the flower-rich meadows of Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Southerham reserve. I was blown away by the wall of sound created by hundreds of crickets and grasshoppers, but it became apparent that not everyone could hear this orthopteran orchestra. The sad truth is that as we get older our ears can’t tune in to the higher frequencies produced by these insects and species by species they fall silent. I have a compilation CD of the chirps and buzzes of Britain’s crickets and grasshoppers – a sort

Seaford’s Sussex Day Celebrations 2020 Although COVID-19 restrictions meant that, disappointingly, a physical Sussex Day event could not take place this year, on 16th June, Seaford Town Council hosted a virtual celebration. This virtual event invited Seaford residents to celebrate Sussex Day from the comfort of their own homes. Celebrations kick-started with Seaford Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP) creating a video artist tutorial with Jane Robins. SCIP hosted a collage competition inspired by the tutorial and there were lots of entries and two incredible winners. Well done to all who entered! The flag was raised, complying with the Government’s Covid-19 guidance, with only six attending and keeping at a 2-metre social distance. This was led by the Seaford Town Crier, Peter White, who read the official ‘Sussex Day Charter’ for all the people of the ancient kingdom of Sussex, celebrating the rites and traditions of Sussex. This was followed by the Town Crier’s own more humorous ‘Sussex Day Cry’, which gave a potted history of the origins of the celebration, which marks the festival of St Richard of Chichester. The Mayor of Seaford Cllr Rodney Reed, Mayoress and Consort Mrs Ann Reed, Flag Volunteer Cllr Dave Argent, and Seaford Lifeguard’s Peter Gwilliam attended the flag raising – thank you to Mrs Pat White for taking the photographs. A huge thank you to all involved in raising the flags and in organising the virtual celebration. A special thanks to the Martello Museum for raising the Sussex flag and decorating the Tower with bunting; to SCIP for creating the tutorial; to Artwave for promoting the competition; and to Onneke who allowed Seaford Town Council to share images of her popular Sussex artwork on the led up to Sussex Day. A HEARTFELT MESSAGE OF THANKS TO THE PEOPLE OF SEAHAVEN Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to all of you kind people and organisations in Seaford and the surrounding area who have given – or are regularly giving – food and finance so that we may support the many households struggling with food poverty at this time. Before Coronavirus, we were providing food parcels for around twenty to thirty households per week; this has now risen at its height to over one hundred. We have needed a great deal of food to sustain this support... but, thanks to you, with the need has come the supply and no-one has gone without. The need has not diminished, so we remain grateful for everything given us, be it groceries or money, to help us to keep going on behalf of those families or individuals in need. It has been impossible to thank every one of you personally but we hope, once distancing is less of an issue, to be able to express our gratitude to you in a more tangible way. With love and thanks from Dawn Woodgate and the Seahaven Storehouse Team

Sussex Arts Collective COLLECTIONS 2020 The Cuckmere Room Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford Due to COVID-19 Collections 2020 some exhibitions have been cancelled until further notice.

Collections 2020

The countdown has started! In just a few weeks the Sussex Arts Collective will be making their long anticipated return to The Crypt Gallery to launch their ARTWAVE 2020 exhibition COLLECTIVISTS!. The delayed ARTWAVE festival will probably be the first event of its kind and will come as a blessed relief to those who have been starved of visual art for so long. Saturday 5th September ours doors will be flung open to welcome you with open arms; of course at a suitably social distance. It’s the greatest pleasure to introduce you to this month’s featured member, Chris Ford. Having only just joined this year his exquisite pots were an immediate hit at our one and only COLLECTIONS exhibition earlier this year. Without a doubt you’ll see his work in the ARTWAVE exhibition.

Collections 2020 SPOTLIGHT: Chris Ford

Chris grew up on an estate for workers at the Atomic Energy establishment at Harwell Berkshire. His early life was dominated by the sciences – studying biology at university becoming fascinated with embryos and how they start as a single cell transforming into organisms of such varied shapes character. In 1975 he settled in Brighton where he lectured at Sussex University on the subject. He was inspired to take up a pottery evening class after watching the Michael Casson BBC series on the craft of the potter. Having tried the wheel he was

18

hooked and continued attending for the next 20 years, primarily as a relaxation from work.

In 1996 he joined a small group taught by Chris Lewis at South Heighton Pottery that had been set up by Ursula Mommens in the early fifties. At that time the pottery had a two-chambered wood kiln and a natural gas kiln. Chris gained experience firing both types of kiln as well as learning how to throw a range of tableware and make larger pots in sections. Retiring in 2005 he took up a part-time job at the pottery where in return he was given space to make his own work. He has a longstanding interest in glazes containing wood ash, particularly those that generate refractory blue (chun) colours. Working with Chris Lewis he was able to experiment with ash from a range of sources in a recipe by Michael O’Brien. His current glaze using ash obtained from a local fish smokery, was derived from these tests. His colour palate is created by using reduction-fired stoneware glazes; glazes fired in the kiln with reduced oxygen. He uses a dark, high iron glaze (tenmoku), a low iron blue green glaze (celadon), and ash glazes made from willow, holly, fruit tree and oak. The chun blue colour on some of his pots arises from the interaction of the surface ash glaze with an underlying high iron layer. High-fired pieces are also more durable and suit work used daily. Six years ago he set up his workshop. He prefers making domestic ware which has a function. All work is thrown on an electric wheel (including chess pieces) and modified afterwards if required. Recently he has started using porcelain, adding stained porcelain to partially thrown unstained porcelain. The resulting pieces are dynamic with splashed stained patterns.

Why is Seaford Museum like a swan? Because even though it looks serene on the surface, it’s paddling like mad underneath! Despite the fact that the Museum will remain closed for a while, we are taking the opportunity for a lot of essential maintenance work and some new developments to be done. We have installed new dehumidifiers to improve the atmosphere and help preserve the thousands of exhibits and archives from the damaging sea air. The (relatively) new access bridge across the moat is being spruced up ready for when we feel it is possible to reopen. We look forward to welcoming new and returning visitors again. There’s an enormous amount to see in over 6,000 square feet of space – some visitors come back more than once to see everything. Being a local museum, we often have visitors offering items for display, which is very generous and much appreciated. But like many other museums, we have

more exhibits to display than there is room available, and so we have to be very selective about what we accept. Seaford Museum occupies the Martello Tower which is an ancient monument with restrictions on how we can alter the space and structure. To try to increase the display space available and improve the visitor experience, we are planning to extend the usable space into the open moat. Which is where you come in...

Calling all volunteers!

Do you have a few hours free? Seaford Museum is on the lookout for volunteers to help with the running and maintenance of the Museum. Plus we are seeking people to help with the administration side – cataloguing, cleaning and conserving items in particular. And of course, we would welcome anyone with a feel for local history who would like to become a steward and join our team. Please get in touch. The Lockdown Butterfly Project During lockdown, some children took part In a butterfly project. This supported wildlife whilst also teaching a basic biological process in an interactive way. The reception years were set the topic ‘Mini Beasts’ for week 1 of term 5 and this was of course lockdown when all schools were closed. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle was the book chosen and children were also encouraged to go on butterfly hunts in the garden or on their daily walk. Sadly those little ones who enjoy going off to the Sussex Wildlife Trust ‘Nature Tots’ experience to

explore the outdoors, bug hunt and build dens haven’t been able to continue these outdoor pursuits due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many families added to the mini beasts topic by sending away for their own grow your own butterflies kit and this proved to be the highlight of lockdown! There was great excitement when the kit from insectlore.co.uk arrived. It included a mesh hanger, complete with caterpillars and feeding plates. The children are encouraged to watch and note their progress as well as read stories about caterpillars and butterflies. After watching the caterpillars pupate and then emerge as butterflies (five Painted Ladies) they fed them for three days on fruit. Releasing them was a big event for the little ones and in our case took place on Father’s Day, 21st June 2020. Waving them off was very important and of course it’s never, never easy to say goodbye!

by setting up a new short-term fund to support local communities. As reported last month, the grants couldn’t have come at a better time as Lockdown has meant local fundraising by holding events has virtually ceased at a time when the need for youth counselling is mounting.

Seaford-based The Youth Counselling Project has been awarded two more grants on top of the two announced last month. The Chalk Cliff Trust has given the Project a handsome £5,000 and Groundwork and Tesco Bags of Help £500, to add to the £10,000 granted by the National Lottery and £4,800 from Sussex Crisis, Sussex Community Foundation. This brings the total awarded in the last couple of months to a much-needed £20,300. The Chalk Cliff Trust is a foundation set up to provide grants and donations to charities, action groups and benevolent organisations in East Sussex. Tesco Bags of Help is responding to the current COVID-19 crisis

The Youth Counselling Project provides therapy for troubled students at local primary and secondary schools. It makes provision for 10 sessions of therapy by appropriately trained counsellors for each of 60 young people taking part from the town’s primary schools and from Seaford Head School. With each block of 10 sessions costing around £450 and Child Line and Young Minds both reporting a steep rise in stress in young people resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the money was most welcome. Even though planned events like the midsummer party, fashion show and quizzes have had to be put on hold, there are still ways to contribute. Visit the Project’s website at www.tycp.org.uk to see how you can donate via JustGiving, Amazon Smile and Lewes Lottery.

Dear supporter, You are...amazing! Recent months have been very strange and difficult with the unwelcome arrival and uncertainty of COVID-19. It has impacted our everyday lives in ways we could not have imagined. Yet despite this upheaval, I continue to be constantly amazed by the kindness and support that you, our local community, has shown. You are amazing and your support enables us to continue caring for those children that need us most. Over the last few months you have been truly inspirational - creating virtual events, shaving your heads, running marathons in your back gardens, climbing mountains using your stairs, and singing from your rooftops. You play our weekly lottery and fundraise on your birthdays. You are the unknown sponsor to our appeals or the anonymous donor on a JustGiving page. You are the school, office, business, care home, sports club, or community group, working hard, organising days, nights, and weeks to raise funds for your local community. Together, you are the future of Chestnut Tree House, and I cannot thank you enough. Thank you.

Local Author Nominated for Award Emma Jackson’s debut novel, A Mistletoe Miracle, was published in November 2019 and has recently been nominated for the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s special debut novel award, the Joan Hessayon Prize. The winner will be announced in September this year. Since being published by Orion Dash, over 10,000 copies of A Mistletoe Miracle have sold, and Emma has had two further books released. First, a historical fantasy novel, The Devil’s Bride with DarkStroke (as Emma S Jackson), and most recently another romantic comedy with Orion Dash. Summer in the City follows the story of two secondary characters from her best-seller, as they journey towards their ‘happy-ever-after’. Despite A Mistletoe Miracle being inspired by the gorgeous chocolate box setting of Alfriston village, Emma has set her new novel in the bustling metropolis of New York City at the height of summer. If you fancy a little armchair travelling, you can download the ebook on Amazon for £1.99.

Sometimes the one thing you’re looking for is right in front of you... Stephen is on a very personal mission to find his father as per the wishes in his mother’s will. But he has no idea where to start, not that he’s going to tell anyone that... When Noelle, native New Yorker, daughter of a detective and desperate for a distraction from the

novel she’s been struggling to write, offers to help, it feels like the perfect solution... Except the last time she spoke to Stephen he thought they’d be seeing the New Year in together and instead she stood him up and sold him out! Stephen’s big enough and been around the block enough times to understand that all is fair in love and war, isn’t he? But when Stephen accepts her offer and they begin their search across the city, it soon becomes clear that the weather isn’t the only thing that’s heating up. A heartwarming summer romance perfect for fans of Heidi Swain, Sarah Morgan and Holly Martin. Understanding the stages of dementia Nial Joyce of leading dementia care centre, Clifden House in Seaford, outlines the different stages of dementia and how to recognise the symptoms. When it comes to the different stages of dementia, we can typically categorise the trajectory of the disease as mild, moderate or severe. However, a seven stage model that looks at cognitive decline is perhaps more useful. Knowing where a loved one falls on this scale can help to identify signs and symptoms, while also determining the most appropriate care plan.

their personal care, they might find it difficult to dress appropriately or be unable to remember simple facts about themselves, such as their address or phone number. However, they usually recognise family and friends and can recall events from years ago, especially their childhood, with great clarity. On average this stage can last around 1.5 years.

The 7 stages of dementia

Severe Decline

Normal Behaviour

In the early stages of dementia your loved one may experience no symptoms, though changes in the brain might already be occurring – these can happen several years before any dementia signs or symptoms emerge.

Forgetfulness

A person living with dementia might forget things easily and constantly lose things around the house, although not to the point where the memory loss can easily be distinguished from normal age-related memory deterioration.

Mild Decline

You may begin to notice subtle changes and signs that something ‘isn’t quite right.’ They might be frequently losing their purse, or keys or forgetting appointments. This stage can last up to seven years.

Moderate Decline

In these later stages of dementia, the signs and symptoms become clearer to everyone.Your loved one may find it difficult to manage money or pay bills, or remember what they had for breakfast. If they visit their doctor at this point, and undergo a Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), it’s likely that they will be diagnosed with dementia. The average length of this stage is around two years.

Moderately Severe Decline

They may need more help with day-to-day living during this stage. While they can probably still manage

When it comes to the final stages of dementia, constant supervision is needed at home. They may need help with washing and dressing and may also become incontinent. You could notice changes in their personality and behaviour – such as anger and aggression – that can be upsetting and difficult to cope with. Although they might be very confused, they often still know and recognise the people closest to them. This can bring some comfort. Experts believe this stage can last on average around 2.5 years.

Very Severe Decline

Many people pass away before they reach this final stage of dementia, often as a result of other health conditions. At this stage, they’ll experience severe loss of speech, need assistance with day-to-day living, feeding, need round-the-clock care and the support of professional carers. At Clifden House we aim to maximise each individual’s potential through activities and choice, reduce the use of unnecessary medication and help to alleviate the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford has been delivering exceptional care in Sussex for 50 years. As a leader in specialist dementia care it aims to facilitate each person to continue to live a fulfilling and active life with privacy, dignity and security.

U3A News

Ukulele players

It was a relief to come to the end of the lockdown and to hope that life can return to a semblance of normality over the next few weeks. It was particularly good to see friends and family at last. As many commentators have said, it will not be the same as before, though Seaford shops are functioning on the whole and people have flocked to the beach at Seaford and at Cuckmere Haven. Since March, U3A members have been meeting virtually for online chats in French, Spanish and Italian; photos of works of art have been shared and discussed ,and ukulele scores have been exchanged. Now, since June, we have been able to move from the realm of video conferencing to ukulele playing and murder mystery play reading in the garden, while adhering strictly to social distancing and sanitizing rules. The photo shows the socially-distanced ukulele group in action. We hope to be able to add to our outdoor activities, weather permitting, and expand our use of online chat groups. At this time of year we are usually busy preparing our programme for the next season, and at our heart are our group coordinators, members who want to pass on their knowledge to others, whether it be science, art, cookery, philosophy, music, poetry or chatting about current affairs. Even at this difficult time, our coordinators have not let us down and we shall be sending out a summary list of possible activities shortly to members, although dates and venues cannot be finalised. Enquiries will be made as to whether there is any possibility of the pub lunches starting again in September. This was a very popular event, with plenty of chat and there will be a lot to catch up on. Seaford U3A committee is aware that for many people it will take a leap of faith to go out again and join in activities with other people. We shall have to take it slowly to see how things work, and the more members who come forward to engage in the programme the better it will be. U3A membership was due for renewal on 1st August and all members should have received a membership pack in July. We hope to hold the AGM in October

when 20% of members will be needed to attend to form the quorum. Without a quorum the new committee cannot be elected and no resolutions can be passed, so it is to be hoped that members will support the U3A at that meeting. Let us meet together to try to make the U3A as close to the organisation that we had before as we possibly can. For more information about Seaford U3A and also about its linked organisations, Sussex U3A Network (SUN) and SE U3A Region see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack.

Smishing!

Meet the new kid on the fraud squad’s block.

A few years ago, ‘phishing’ was big news. There can’t be a person in the UK who hasn’t received their email from an imaginary Nigerian prince or a shady London Investment Office. Most of us are wise to phishing emails. But now there’s ‘smishing’. This is shorthand for SMS phishing. SMS stands for ‘short messaging service’ and is basically ‘texting’. So smishing is the text equivalent of phishing! Smishing texts are sent for the sole purpose of committing opportunistic fraud. The texts look like they’re from a reputable company and they all have one thing in common – they encourage you to take action, often calling a premium rate number or sharing your confidential information. It can be easy to mistake smishing texts for genuine messages but there are give-aways:

They are often peppered with spelling mistakes They may tell you your account is in danger and you need to act immediately, the threat being that if you don’t your account will be suspended or reported or blocked. This is a scare tactic, to prompt you to follow their instructions. They may tell you that you have won a prize, or that you will miss out on an exclusive offer unless you call a number immediately.

STOP!

If the text is badly written and full of spelling mistakes, it’s unlikely to be genuine. If your account is in danger then no phone company, bank, credit card company or HMRC will expect you to contact them directly from the text. GO TO THE ORIGINAL SOURCE OF THE COMPANY THE TEXT CLAIMS TO BE FROM. Phone them from the number on official documentation, such as a bill, or a bank statement, or use the contact details from the company’s official website. DO NOT call any numbers given in the message. They will tell you whether the text came from them. If it didn’t, they may refer you to their fraud department. If a prize or an offer seems too good to be true it almost certainly is. Simply receiving a suspicious message won’t breach your phone or bank security. Scams won’t work unless you follow the instructions in the text. DON’T RESPOND in any form to the message as that indicates the number is active and you may be repeatedly targeted. If you accidentally fall for one: Change your passwords immediately to bank accounts, phone accounts and email account. Contact your bank and your phone company for advice. Don’t feel embarrassed; smishing messages are designed to look convincing. Sarah Davey

Town Council’s Community Grant Scheme 2020/21 Seaford Town Council is pleased to announce that its annual Grants Scheme is now open for applications! Each year the Town Council extends the opportunity to local community groups, charities or voluntary organisations to apply for a financial grant from the Town Council’s grants pool. Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, the application process of this year’s Grants Scheme was delayed. However the Town Council has now opened the Grants Scheme and is welcoming applications. In the 2019/20 Scheme the Town Council was delighted to be able to support the local community with grants totalling £30,000. There are two types of grant available, small grants of up to £500 or larger grants over £500, up to a

maximum of £3,000. Terms and conditions do apply. In previous years, grants have been awarded for a variety of projects for example helping to fund the Lapwing Music Festival for Cuckmere SOS, assisting with funds for a Summer Camp for the Downs Syndrome Development Trust and new bowling aids for the Crouch Bowling Club to name but a few. Grants have also been awarded to help ensure the continuation of services offered that have a clear benefit to the community and residents of Seaford such as the Dial-A-Ride bus service and Seaford Citizens Advice Bureau. There are certain criteria that must be met to be eligible for a community grant – these are set out in the Council’s Grants Policy. This policy and all details including the application form can be found on the Town Council’s website here: https://www.seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk/communitygrants/ Please note that the closing date for applications to be submitted is noon on Friday 14th August 2020 and that applications should be marked for the attention of Lucy Clark, Finance Manager and emailed to admin@ seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk.

Seaford Rotary New Members Seaford Rotary was delighted to welcome its second lady member earlier this year when Samantha Thomsett joined us, and in July we are looking forward to welcoming Linda Wallraven, a former of Mayor of Seaford. By the time that Seaford Scene goes to print, our numbers will be further boosted with the transfer of three members of Seaford Martello Rotary club to Seaford Rotary and an additional new member. This will bring our numbers up to 43, of whom 6 are ladies.

New President In the President’s handover meeting on 1st July, Keith Ross, President of Seaford Rotary for 2019/20 gave a review of the achievements made in the period of his Presidency. Martin McGill was installed as the new President for 2020/21, and Keith Blackburn and Mike Ogilvie as his Deputies. In his inaugural speech as new President, Martin outlined to members some fresh ideas for the coming year which involve further work with the community, green projects, and further cooperation with the Seaford Martello Rotary Club. During the month Rotarians were able to meet online with Rotary members of the Baridhara Rotary club based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as well as holding Zoom meetings with speakers from two charities. At our 10th June meeting we heard from Amy Hope, Fundraising Manager at Care for the Carers, during Carers Week, a national campaign, with the theme this year to make caring more visible. Rotary GB&I are working to support Care for the Carers by working together with CarersUK to raise awareness of the challenges they face. Amy informed us that Care for the Carers is the leading organisation supporting unpaid carers across East Sussex, and the recognised carers centre for the county. They provide help to over 8,300 carers each year through services including direct support,

42

groups, counselling, an information and advice network and activities programme. Amy outlined to us the challenges that carers have been experiencing during the coronavirus pandemic. An unpaid carer is anyone who looks after somebody who couldn’t do without their help. This could be a family member, friend or neighbour. Caring takes many different forms, from a 16-year-old girl helping her parents look after her disabled brother, to an 80-yearold man caring for his wife who has Alzheimer’s. The number of unpaid carers has grown by 50% because of the coronavirus pandemic. There are 34,000 new unpaid carers in East Sussex because of the virus, taking the total unpaid carers to an estimated 102,000. For further information contact: Care for the Carers, Highlight House, 8 St Leonards Road, Eastbourne, BN21 3UH or via their website www.cftc.org.uk or Telephone: 01323 738390

On 21st June Abi Wells, Corporate and Community Partnerships manager of the charity LEPRA joined us on Zoom to tell us about the work of LEPRA, a British charity working for the relief of Leprosy. LEPRA works in India, Bangladesh, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and offer support, training and health system strengthening in their project countries. Lepra’s teams on the ground have pioneered many successful programmes and capacity building systems that have been adopted by others, including government and international organisations. Leprosy is a communicable disease, caused by bacterium, which affects the skin and peripheral nerves of people. It can cause severe disability, prejudice and even cause blindness. LEPRA’s expertise also helps those affected by Lymphatic Filariasis. Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) can cause swelling of body parts and alter the immune system. It is the second major cause of long-term disability in

Martin worked for some years with HMRC on the Customs side and later as an International Trade consultant for the Independent Accounting and Consulting firm Grant Thornton. Martin joined Rotary about 5 years ago, seeing it as an opportunity to help the local community and charities. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic Martin, together with a number of Rotarians continues to help the community by working with the local Seahaven Storehouse foodbank. He is looking forward to the return of something like normality, so that Seaford Rotary can restart it’s fundraising and community activities fully again. How Covid-19 has changed buyers’ desires in Seaford Space may well have been the final frontier for the crew of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek, but it’s also proving popular much closer to home. According to a BBC report based on data from property portal Rightmove, the lockdown changed people’s priorities when it comes to buying or renting a new home. Indoor and outdoor space has always been a big draw for home searchers in Seaford. But the article suggests it’s now top of most people’s lists. These new desires may end up being temporary, but they do make for interesting reading. The findings also highlight that due to the rise in home working, a spare room which can be used as an office or workout area is towards the top of home seekers’ minds right now. As is good wi-fi, a pet-friendly home and having parks or a natural environment nearby. And it’s the combination of being able to work from home AND have access to a beach and the South Downs which is making Seaford a popular choice for people looking to move out of more built-up areas.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

The most significant changes in homebuyers’ desires after the outbreak began are: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

Access to a garden A bigger home Access to a garage A better home workspace Proximity to parks or countryside A Pet-friendly home

Since 1987 we’ve been serving the people of Seaford. We’ve seen the property market’s ups and downs and observed the changing trends and priorities of sellers and buyers over those years. So, if you are thinking of moving, we’ll help you boldly go where you haven’t gone before. Thanks for reading.

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club During Lockdown members have been busy on their collections. My collecting area in recent years has been ‘stamps that tell a story’ such as German express mail letters sent from the end of the First World War up to about 1924. This covers the period at the start of the Weimar Republic when Germany was struggling to pay its international war reparation debts and began to print money which lead to hyperinflation. From April 1921 to December 1923 the cost of posting a letter went up from 0.60 to 100,000 million Marks and inflation

was particularly steep towards the end of this period. The photo rbelow left shows a postcard sent in March 1923 which is plastered with stamps on both sides to make up the 40 Marks postage rate and leaving almost no room for the message. The photo left shows both sides of a letter sent on the 8th November 1923 at a time when postal rates went up from 1,000 million Marks to 10,000 million Marks in a single week. Collecting stamps on cover, like this gives the whole social picture of the stamps and their usage which is lost when the stamps are removed from the envelope. If you have any queries relating to stamps or post cards please contact the club secretary David Manthorpe on 01323 492433 or email: david.manthorpe10@gmail.com.

HOME SWEET HOME Buying a property should be exciting. Not exhausting. All too often, the prospect of dealing with the ‘conveyancing bit’ of moving home can be a little bit daunting. At Barwells Solicitors, we believe it can be better than that. We think the whole process should be made as straightforward and painless as possible. You should be kept right up to date with what’s going on, in everyday language, rather than ‘lawyerspeak’. And you should be kept informed of the cost all the way through the process. In fact we don’t just think it we do it.

TREES FOR SEAFORD

trees have outgrown their stakes and weeds need to be removed from the base with new mats put down. Protection from strimmers is also vital, so guards are placed around the trunk and any low growing branches removed.

It’s been a strange time for everyone over the past few months, with life changing beyond recognition and all our familiar routines and activities being put on hold. Spring came and went, with the natural world carrying on regardless (and some may say flourishing in the new world order). And so we find ourselves, perhaps surprisingly, in the full flush of Summer. At the beginning of the year, Trees for Seaford was blossoming, having just welcomed an enthusiastic new group of members. And we had high hopes for the months ahead. Sadly we have not been able to put this into action, until now.

It’s a bit like giving them space to breathe again and gives them a good chance of thriving for many years to come, creating a greener and healthier place for us all to live in.

As restrictions ease we are starting to get back out to check on the trees around town and carry out any maintenance required. Some of the

It’s still early days, but we hope we will be able to do some more planting in the Autumn. You can keep in touch via our Facebook page @treesforseaford or visit the website: https:// treesforseaford.wordpress.com/ Photo: Trees for Seaford’s new branded hi-vis jackets.

More than three months into the pandemic Seaford Community Cinema had been looking forward to reopening at the beginning of September. However, after doing the sums the voluntary organisation realised that even at 1 metre social distancing they would still only be able to admit 30 people to each performance. Then there were the toilets to consider, the bar and the constricted foyer to manage safely. Not only would the cinema lose money but, even more importantly, in chair Paula Ross’s words: ‘Until we can get the ethos of what we are back we don’t want to adopt half measures.’ So it’s likely that the cinema at the Barn Theatre will be reopening in line with other cinemas, probably not until 1st January 2021. Paula added: ‘We want to give all of you the best experience, so can’t see ourselves reopening this year.’ People who have bought tickets for the last season may have their money back or swap them for new winter season films, so hold on to any unused tickets. Paula said: ‘We are obviously reviewing the situation regularly, and if anything changes we will be ready to spring into action. We want you all back, but happy, safe and well.’

The Big Butterfly Count

Friday 17th July to Sunday 9th August

During Lockdown while trying to engage my children in schoolwork I discovered that there is a society called Butterfly Conservation. They have organised a nationwide butterfly count every year since 2010. Butterflies are good indicators of the health of our environment because they react very quickly to change in their surroundings. This makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. The survey counts butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK, which assists in identifying trends in species. This helps Butterfly Conservation plan how to protect butterflies and understand the effect of climate change. To take part you need to sit in your garden, a park, a wood or forest, or your school field for 15 minutes on a bright sunny day and simply count the butterflies you see. July and August are when most butterflies are at the adult stage of their lifecycle, and hopefully there is more sunshine, so they are more likely to be seen. Count the maximum number of each species

that you can see from your vantage point at a single time. So if you see three Peacock butterflies on the same bush at the same time record it as 3, but if you only see one on a bush at a time then record it as 1, even if you saw one on several occasions. This is so that you don’t count the same butterfly more than once. You can also count while on a walk. Simply add up the number of each butterfly species that you see during the 15 minutes. You can submit separate records for different dates at the same place, and for different places that you visit during the counting period. Even if you don’t see any butterflies or moths your count is still useful. For more information visit www.bigbutterflycount.org Download identification apps for Android or IOS – search for Big Butterfly Count. Sarah Davey

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford

Several Firsts

June has seen a few pioneering activities for members of Inner Wheel. We successfully held our first Annual General Meeting by Zoom when Ann Reed and Janis Livingstone were recognised as Joint Presidents for the year. Although restrictions are in place, social distancing will be observed, and members look forward to being able to meet in the Joint Presidents’ gardens for a cream tea and friendship. Members of Crafty Ladies continue to be highly active, utilising their craft and sewing skills for the good of others. The Mayor’s Consort received her ribbon and facebook absolute beauty seaford regalia and a storage and transport box. The Mayor’s regalia, however, was received by itself, apparently having lost touch with its transport box several years ago. Crafty Ladies of Seaford Inner Wheel were 27/02/2017 09:42 pleased to respond to the newly appointed Mayor’s request for a storage and transport pouch. The lined velvet draw string bag exceeded all expectations in terms of style and quality. Photographs of the handover and the draw string pouch received many positive comments when posted on Facebook. Stitched inside the pouch was an embroidered label showing it had been made with love by the Crafty Ladies, and so this delightful donated green velvet storage pouch can be used by Mayors for many years to come.

Who’s Who In Seaford?

Sarah McStravick, Chair of Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team (SVET) Sarah is currently staying in Seaford, having lived in the town since 1977. She went to Seaford County Primary School, Seaford Head, Lord Mayor Treloar College and the University of Huddersfield. SVET reformed from a response to flooding in 2015, and most recently to help coordinate a community response to support those shielding in the COVID-19 crisis. Sarah also works as a Social Worker in a London borough, currently working virtually. She has also worked as a children’s advocate, a BT telephone operator and was a Seaford Town Councillor between 2011 and 2015. Sarah is a member of Seaford Little Theatre – enjoying their quizzes throughout lockdown, and also a member of London Welsh Rugby Club. Sarah has a son aged 22, a daughter aged 21 and a pet Peace Lily plant called ‘Lil’! What does your role involve? I initiated the group, but I now have an amazing team around me. I chair a weekly coordination meeting, volunteer on the helpline when I can, and support with safeguarding issues. What do you most enjoy about your role? The helpline, listening to those who use our service and liaising with the whole team! What do you like best about Seaford? The people, the community feel, landscape, seascape, ‘it’s my kind of town!’ What is your favourite piece of music? Bohemian Rhapsody. What is your favourite film? The Princess Bride. What book are you reading at the moment? Maybe Esther, by Katya Petrowskaja. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Sitting in a deck chair on a warm (or windy) summer’s day on Seaford beach.

62

What has been your most embarrassing moment? I’m sure I’ll have friends reading who will be able to think of things! Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford, and why? At the top of High and Over looking at the panoramic view on a clear day – for its breathtaking beauty. Which living person do you most admire? Baroness Jane Campbell. What makes you sad? That my children never met my father as he died before they were born. What words or phrases do you most overuse? Erm... How do you relax? Before Lockdown I loved to go to salsa classes in London, now it’s sitting in the garden with family or doing research on ancestry. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Life is short. Embrace everything. What is the first line of your favourite poem? Climb if you will, but remember What is your favourite journey? The Caledonian Sleeper Train. How would you spend a million pounds? Probably do some travelling, get rid of both mine and my childrens’ student loans, and help support community causes. What is your most memorable learning experience? My Granny taught me how to do many things with one arm as she had learnt from her father who only had one arm. What keeps you awake at night? Nothing, my epilepsy medication knocks me out! What is your greatest extravagance? Travelling when I can! What is your greatest fear? Being alone without family or friends. What is your favourite smell? My mother’s roast dinner. What is the best advice you have ever been given? You can do it! What would your motto be? Dream the impossible dream. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Eva Peron. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My mum and my children (equally). Anything else you may like to include? To request help or to volunteer, please visit: https://svet.proffer.org.uk or call 01323 899054 Mon-Fri 8.30am - 5.30pm, Sat 8.30am - 1.30pm. Also a big thank you to all the dedicated volunteers of Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team, without whom this response wouldn’t have been possible.

Members of the Committee have been in regular contact discussing how we could put on a large public event safely for the people of Seaford, our members and visitors. Sadly, we have had to take the difficult decision to postpone our event on 17th October 2020, which would have been our 10th anniversary event since reforming.

a duty of care to ensure that we put on a safe event. Clearly we cannot guarantee to do this as things stand. Irrespective of what Government guidelines might be in October, planning our Bonfire Night goes on all year, and it is in these summer months that members traditionally get together to make torches and build our tableaux. Clearly social distancing has put paid to this preparation as we would not wish to put any of our members at risk. Rest assured we will be back in 2021 with an even bigger Bonfire Night to celebrate our postponed 10th year! Photo: Guy Fawkes effigy by Pete Woj

3 Keep dead-heading flowering plants

to keep them blooming. Prune spent blooms just above a leaf joint with sharp secateurs or scissors. 3 Water tomatoes regularly but don’t overwater. Tomatoes like consistency. 3 Prune out old stems of summer fruiting raspberries and loganberries, and thin out new stems that are over crowded or weak, tie the remaining stems to horizontal wire supports. 3 Finish trimming conifer and evergreen shrub hedges this month. 3 Take semi-ripe cuttings from shrubs like ceanothus, cistus and fuchsia. It’s August, normally showtime, an opportunity to display the fruits of our gardening labour alongside cakes, jams and handicrafts. Unfortunately the war against coronavirus has, as Hitler did in 1939, forced the cancellation of all society events including our annual show. Horticultural and flower shows throughout the country have had to be abandoned in this dreadful year, and we can only look ahead with optimism to next year’s events. The gardening year is constantly looking ahead; planning and preparing for a good growing season. Now in August, with the garden in full growth, it’s a good time to take stock, take photographs, make notes and consider changes and improvements for the new season. Fortunately some NGS gardens have managed to open (some need pre-booking), and a visit or two can provide ideas, inspiration and plants for your own plot. to d

ferns

Many gardens have permanently shaded areas, in my case it’s the border beneath a covered pergola that I’ve successfully planted with ferns. Ferns preceded the dinosaurs and are perfectly adapted to life in the shade. Most ferns prefer a damp, sheltered, welldrained site, but many can also tolerate direct sunlight, provided the soil doesn’t dry out, whilst others will grow in deep shade. There are so many varieties, large and small, evergreen and deciduous, that you will find something suitable for your situation. The soft shield fern (Polystichum setiferum) likes partial shade and will grow beneath deciduous trees. The hart’s tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium), prefers an alkaline soil, even builder’s rubble, and the versatile common polypody (Polypodium vulgare) copes with both damp and dry, and will make good groundcover. If you want a dramatic statement plant, Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern) is one of the hardier tree ferns. Although ultimately tall, the tree fern is very slow growing so it’s worth buying big if you can. This plant needs moist shade and some winter fleece protection to prevent die back of foliage. Fern collecting was a craze in Victorian times when ferneries became a feature in large country gardens. A fernery can still be found at Kingston Lacy in Dorset, and Tatton Park in Cheshire has one of the largest surviving glazed fern houses in the country. Tree ferns are featured at Trebah sub-tropical garden near Falmouth, whilst Chelsea Physic Garden houses its collection in a restored 1907 fern house.

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD At the time of writing the next member’s social evening is scheduled for September 24th, however COVID-19 rules (from 4 July 2020) would prohibit this event as it would be impossible to follow the safety guidelines. Members will be kept informed.

To parody the evergreen song ‘What a diff ’rence three months made/2,000 hours brought the sun and the flowers…’ and weeds and seedlings and shoots and seeds. In spite of a squad of six volunteers at any one time doing their level best to keep order at Seaford Community Garden, our walled acreage has gone on the march and refused to keep to the horticultural rule book. And do you know, it looks ravishing, so thanks in particular to Allison, Brian, Val, James, Phil and Veronica, and others who have turned up during Lockdown to do their green-fingered stint. The garden reopened in the middle of June on a one visitor in, one out basis, and we’ll let you know as soon as possible when that rule can be relaxed, but in the meantime a visit on the first of July showed nature at her most vociferous, with foliage and blooms rampaging gloriously. Mauve poppies had selfseeded into the veg bed and James and Phil were taking out tree echium seedlings from among the broad beans and courgettes. Meanwhile Mummy Tree Echium was soaring majestically where she had been placed, wilfully scattering her seeds for a keen south-westerly to disperse just where we don’t want them.

Veronica was busy chopping down the poppies which had bloomed to reveal bulging pods from which the seed will be collected ready for selective planting next year. Although Lockdown meant no tomatoes were planted in the poly tunnel, that didn’t stop a couple of determined plants coming up anyway, so hopefully they will bear some fruit, along with a few outside-grown plants. Of course normally we would be well on the way to selling the usual glut of toms on the sales table, but this year don’t get your hopes too high. However, the broad beans, which will probably be over by the time you read this, were great, picked while small and tender. And French beans, lettuces and radishes are romping away while newly planted leeks look like spring onions in a raised bed. James was pruning the prolifically fruiting plums, just showing their first crimson blush. ‘We’ve got a lot of plums coming,’ he said. ‘I think it could be the best crop we’ve ever had. Roses have been great this year, and strawberries and raspberries have all done well after all that rain followed by all that sunny weather.’ See, just like the song lyrics. Anyway, come and see for yourself how our volunteers are taming nature’s bounty the better to enjoy her magnificence, by paying a socially distanced visit on Wednesdays and Saturdays from from 10am until noon. The Garden Team Photos from top: Sadly, Lockdown meant no NGS opening, but the signs came in handy for socially distancing the one-way tour route; this rose smells as delicious as it looks; volunteers put their backs into weeding; Veronica weighs up broad beans for the sales table; poppies self-seeded among the veg.

Seaford Afternoon Flower Club Whether it was the title of this month’s competition, or just the sheer enthusiasm of our members, we had an excellent response to the theme of “Wine and Roses”. Obviously, some of us have been enjoying the odd tipple and our gardens have delighted in an excellent display of roses this year. As a Club we continue to try to keep our members involved with newsletters and telephone calls, but of course, nothing can replace the joy of being able to interact face to face with one another at our meetings. One day...! It does seem as though some things are returning to a more normal life, including the weather, which at the time of writing has been unseasonably windy, even for Seaford. We hope to continue to delight readers with photos of some of our competition entries and look forward to learning what our next challenge will be.

The Havens Community Hub The Havens Community Hub, founded to help solve unmet community needs, delivered their first ‘Happy Boxes’, themed to celebrate National Cream Tea Day on Friday 26th June, to nearly fifty older people in the Havens Community (Saltdean to Seaford and the surrounding villages). Grateful recipients, who have been isolated for over three months, expressed their delight in receiving a ‘Hug in a Box’ which contained freshly home-baked scones, cream, jam, retro sweets, biscuits, tea coffee and hot chocolate sachets, a bag of fresh strawberries, and practical items for coming out of Lockdown such as hand sanitizer and hand-stitched

comfortable fabric face masks. Practical support guides such as ‘Preventing Falls’ were also handed out along with motivational cards drawn by local primary school children acknowledging how hard lockdown has been for everyone and their hopes for a better future. The Hub secured funding for their first 100 Happy Boxes through their recent Silver Linings crowdfunding campaign and with support from the Small Sparks grant scheme by SCDA. Their next fifty boxes will be donated to Kempton House Day Centre and the Deans Senior Tea Club for their members, with a new theme and items.

A Good Read

Theatre Shoes by Noel Streatfield

If you have a child who loves to perform – dancing, singing, acting – then this is the book for them! Noel Streatfield is best known for her novel Ballet Shoes and this one is often overlooked. Whilst it may not have the classic status that Ballet Shoes does this is still well worth reading. Originally published as Curtain Up this follows the story of Sorrel, Holly and Mark. After the death of their mother, and the disappearance of their father during whilst serving in the Navy, the siblings are sent to wartime London to stay with their grandmother who they have never met. They find themselves in a world they have never experienced as they discover that their grandmother (and their mother) used to be a famous actress. She seems keen that the children follow in the

family tradition, even though they have no experience, and they find themselves enrolled at Madame Fidolia’s Academy of Dancing and Stage training. Fans of Ballet Shoes will recognise this as the stage school attended by the Fossil girls. Sorrel soon discovers a passion for performing, starring as Ariel in a production of The Tempest. Mark is determined to join the Navy like his father – despite being a talented singer – whilst Holly shines at dancing. Readers of Ballet Shoes will notice a similarity with the paths of the Fossil children, and they do indeed make cameos. Ultimately this story is about coming to terms with loss and discovering an extended family, albeit with the smell of the greasepaint and a pirouette or two.

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

Coming more than 30 years after her best selling The Handmaid’s Tale, readers certainly had a long wait for this sequel. The success of the recent television series has certainly brought in new fans, anxious to know what happens and whether Gilead will ever be brought down. Here Atwood tries to give us some answers. For those not familiar, the original novel told the story of America in the not so distant future where a totalitarian state has been established in the east of the country after a civil war. Women’s rights have been taken away from them and they are subjugated in this patriarchal society. This sequel tells us what happened next from the perspective of three women: Aunt Lydia, familiar to readers from the first novel, Agnes, a young woman living in Gilead, and Daisy, a young woman living in Canada. Here we learn something of how Gilead came to be in flash-back accounts from Aunt Lydia, how the outside world sees Gilead, and the life-changing decisions that are made for young girls in Gilead by society. As a fan of the original I found this to be a gripping read that did not detract from the power of the 1985 novel. Is it a satisfying ending? Is everything resolved with the end of Gilead? I’ll leave it to you to find out. Willow Coby

Frying pan Pizza

Yes, really – it’s so good!

Preparation time: Rise 2-5 days (yes this takes a little forward preparation but it’s so worth it.) Cooking time: 5 minutes + 35 mins Makes 4 pan-sized pizzas IMPORTANT – You cannot use a non-stick frying pan for this recipe. It has to be a cast iron pan or skillet.

Ingredients

Pizza base: 500g strong white bread flour (but if you have any Italian 00 flour, it’s is even better), 1½ tsp dried active yeast. I did not have this throughout lockdown and used rapid dried yeast instead. I found that the rise time was quicker (2 days vs 4 days) so this might actually be a bonus, 1 tsp table salt, 1 tsp sugar. Topping: 1 400g tin chopped plum tomatoes, 1 pack buffalo mozzarella, 1 bunch basil, extra-virgin olive oil, to drizzle – plain is great but you can add any toppings you like. We made pepperoni, ham and sweetcorn, and ham and pineapple.

GENERAL HOUSE & HOME MAINTENANCE CARPENTRY WOOD & LAMINATE FLOORING PAINTING & DECORATING DRY LINING OF WALLS COVING l KITCHEN FITTING SOFITS, FASCIAS & GUTTERING FENCING l FLATPACK ASSEMBLY SUMMER HOUSES & SHEDS NO JOB IS TOO SMALL

Method

Mix the flour, yeast, salt and sugar then stir in 325ml water to a smooth dough. Cover and put in the fridge for two to four days. Remember rapid yeast will activate faster and may only require two days, or even one if you’re in more of a hurry. Tip on to a lightly floured surface. Divide into four roughly equal portions, shape into balls, cover and leave for two hours. While the dough is rising take the cheese and toppings out of the fridge so that they come to room temperature. Empty the tomatoes into a saucepan over a medium heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, until they form a thick sauce. Season this to taste with salt and a pinch of sugar. Once the dough has proved, flatten it into pizza bases to fit your pan. For reference my pan has a 26cm base. Heat the cast iron frying pan or skillet over a moderate-high heat. It’s ready when you drop a little water into the base and it instantly hisses and bounces. Preheat the grill to between moderate and high. Lightly flour your hands then stretch the dough into a rough round, keeping the edges a bit thicker. Cook in the pan until the top starts to dry out then add some tomato sauce and mozzarella. Wait a minute before adding any other toppings. Leave in the pan until base begins to char. The first time I chickened out but as I got into the groove, the subsequent pizzas were much better. When you’re happy with the bottom switch the pan to under the grill until the cheese bubbles and the edges brown. Finish with a few basil leaves. These really are the next best thing to a pizza from a pizza oven or a proper pizzeria.

Eat to Boost Your Mood

We all feel a bit low from time to time. Modifying your diet may help. Go Mediterranean Scientists have found that those who followed a classic Mediterranean diet were 30 per cent less likely to develop depression. It is thought that the combination of omega 3 fatty acids together with natural unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants from olive oil and nuts, flavonoids and other phytochemicals from fruit and other plant foods, and large amounts of natural folates and other B vitamins in the overall Mediterranean dietary pattern may help to protect against depression. Eat selenium Studies have linked low mood with low

levels of the mineral selenium. Eating nuts is the best way to increase your intake. Brazil nuts are the most concentrated selenium source. Just three nuts contain the recommended daily intake of selenium for a woman.

Watch your blood sugar The glycaemic index

(GI) is a numerical system that indicates how quickly carbohydrates will make your blood sugar levels rise. Fluctuations in blood sugar lead to swings in mood and energy. Choose foods that are slow to digest, and which offer a gradual, sustained energy release.

Boost your serotonin Tryptophan is an essential

amino acid which is converted in our bodies into the neurotransmitter serotonin. Low serotonin levels are often associated with depression. Proteins such as lean chicken, tuna, salmon and beans are tryptophan-rich and have been proven to boost the mood.

Get plenty of fish Research suggests that omega 3, the essential fatty acids found in fish oils, can improve your mood. Regular consumption of oily fish (salmon, tuna and mackeral) has been associated with better moods and a higher self-reported mental health, even after adjustment for factors such as income, age and other eating patterns. Remember that depression is not low mood. It is a serious mental health condition. If you think you are suffering from depression please consult your GP. Louise Addison

The Birth of England Sunday 12th July was the anniversary of the birth of England. In the year 927AD, the king of the AngloSaxons, Athelstan, took control of the areas of the North of the country then ruled by the Vikings from York. This happened at Eamont Bridege in Cumbria. Thus was created England within its geographical boundaries, much as we know it today. From then on, Athelstan was known as Rex Angolorum, the first ever king of the English. This is a day that has not been specially celebrated over the centuries, so perhaps it is time that we start to commemorate England’s birthday, 12th July each year? Had it not been for the restrictions because of this year’s COVID-19 pandemic, the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George would have had a celebratory function – let us hope we can do something next year. Bob Peedle MBE, Fellow of The Royal Society of St George and Chairman of the Seahaven Branch.

Maritime Quiz Lockdown is easing but meetings still need to be postponed, including Ed’s talk on shipwrecks to Hard of Hearing. As we all live near or close to the sea, and there’s a summer gale brewing as we write, here’s a maritime quiz in the meantime. NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB In a normal year, NP&S Lions would already have been involved in several activities, including organising a half marathon, putting on a spring blossom outing for the elderly, holding several book sales in the local garden centre, running car boot sales, helping out with beach cleans, and manning a stall to raise money for other charities such as our local RNLI. Since the Lockdown on 23rd March, none of these events have been possible, but NP&S Lions has not been idle. Our Lionistic year ended in June, when we would normally have held an official changeover lunch in which we would have thanked our retiring President, David Hemming, for all his sterling work over the last two years. The last few months have been particularly difficult, and because of social distancing, he has had to conduct our monthly meetings via Zoom, and we have all had to become tech-savvy and learn how to help our community using e-mails and text messages. We welcome our incoming President, Lion Colin Meagher, who has been a Lion for many years, and will lead us through the challenge of carrying on with the vital work we do to make our local communities better places for us all to live and thrive in, despite the current situation. We are still finding other ways to help our communities through these difficult times. We made a decision early on to grant funds to the local foodbanks each month to enable them to provide essential supplies to families in need. Many charities have found themselves in a serious financial situation due to the current virus crisis, and we

have been happy to donate £2,500 towards continued provision of an important audio service instigated by Uckfield Lions Club. Called The Wealden Talking News, this valuable service provides news sticks for the blind and partially sighted in our area. One of our major assets has been our fabulous new minibus. Unfortunately, since the lockdown we have been unable to carry passengers, but another great use was found for the bus – Newhaven foodbank parcel deliveries! Because of the restrictions on manning this new service, we had to find a dedicated team to help out. This is where Brian and his wife Val came in. They have manned the bus since 23rd March, delivering food parcels to those families who are self-isolating down here on the south coast. On their delivery day they average 20 deliveries in Newhaven and Peacehaven, and also do shopping for vulnerable families. So far, they have dedicated over 160 hours of service to this task – a fantastic job, and we thank them for all their hard work on behalf of NP&S Lions. Over the last three months we have been grateful to the many people who have volunteered their services to help those in our community who have been self-isolating, with shopping, collecting prescriptions etc. If you have been one of these, and have enjoyed volunteering and found it rewarding to help your local community through this difficult time, and think you might like to continue in some way, you would receive a very warm welcome at any of our Lions clubs. We are always on the lookout for new members and if you are interested do please check out our NP&S website: www.npslions.co.uk Photo: Colin Meagher, NP&S Lions President 2020/21.

The Royal Society of St George, The Seahaven Branch

The Seahaven Branch, The Royal Society of St George together with Seaford Town Council held a small commemorative service at the Seaford War Memorial on Saturday 27th June, Veterans and Armed Forces Day. Just before 11am the event was introduced by the Town Crier, Peter White. In attendance was the Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed and Mayoress Mrs Ann Reed, the President of the Seahaven Branch Laurie Holland as well as other joint committee members and members of RSSG and the public. The Chairman of the joint organising committee, Major Bob Peedle MBE welcomed everyone. Prayers were then led by Rev Andy Machin, the Mayor’s Chaplain, in memory of those who have gone before, including the Nation’s recent loss of Dame Vera Lynn. The exhortations were read by Ken Jupp, Chairman of the Seaford RBL followed by Last Post and Reveille played by trumpeter Christopher Goodchild from the Seaford Silver Band. Prayers were then said for those men and

Seaford in Summer Well, we have made it! We have got to the summer holidays! I know for many of us, there may not be much difference in the months that have just past... kids at home and trying to find things to do, but I want to approach this with some positivity. The past few months have meant time away from family and friends and a lot of time at home, but maybe, the summer and relative easing of UK restrictions means we can really benefit from time with our friends and family, time to continue our hobbies, to enjoy our local area and to *maybe* start looking forwards. Here are some of my faves and plans for the summer...

k Get outside

I’m not going to lie, compared to some lockdowns across Europe, ours was relatively ‘light’ – unlike Spain we did get our daily exercise slot and freedom to get outside. I know that for many, our beach and Seaford Head became a popular spot. This won’t change for us now the summer holidays are here – bike rides along the esplanade, beach picnics (taking our rubbish home, of course) and walks around the local area really will be a big part of our activities. This means we get the fresh air and exercise needed whilst also attempting to steer clear of big groups and overcrowding. It’s a shame that so many of our local beauty spots have been overcrowded and even a little abused by visitors in recent weeks, but I’m hoping the novelty has worn off and we can make the most of Cuckmere, South Barn, Seaford Head and the glory that is Seaford beach.

k New hobbies

During the months at home, I found I needed something to keep busy with, that at the same time was calming and took my mind off the anxiety and worry of what was happening around us. Usually for me, I escape through a good book, but having read most of what was in the house and finding the times so challenging I needed something else...much to my Mum’s shock, this became sewing! I made a felt garland for a friend’s baby, a Christmas decoration for later in the year and am soon to start on a piece for our house. I should admit here that at the age of 37 I had NEVER sewn even a button on until Lockdown! Ha! It was great to challenge myself to try something new,

learn something, and really take my mind away from what was happening and the intensity of time at home with young children for so long. Did any of you find new hobbies or activities during this time? I hope if you did, you found them a help and continue with them.

k Catch up with friends

Technology is amazing. I’m sure we’ve all realised how crucial it has become for home working and keeping in touch with friends and family. But, a video call or message doesn’t make up for sitting with a cuppa and putting the world to rights, a play-date where the kids can play contently with much-missed friends, a BBQ on a sunny afternoon... I plan to do many of these things. If anything, the change to routine and ‘normal’ made me take stock of my life. Now, we may have the time to actually enjoy friends and family. It doesn’t need to be a costly activity, just a walk together, a meet in the park, a cuppa in the garden; these small pleasures can really brighten up our day. My family aren’t local to Sussex, so I have really made the most of technology to keep in touch, but I really can’t wait to see them face to face. Even if a hug isn’t quite allowed, I have learnt how precious time is. I hope you get to see your friends and family a little more in the weeks/months to come and can step outside and enjoy what Seaford has to offer. J Hanby-Penn

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY Choral singing is one of those safe and sedate activities we can all enjoy so these are strange days. We suddenly find ourselves in a similar risk category to motorcycle racing and bridge jumping. We can produce droplets by just breathing, thus the need to stay two metres apart, but singers take this to new levels. A side effect of the deep diaphragm breathing is the production of aerosols, tiny, invisible droplets that can float around for longer than the visible droplets we usually exhale or cough out. These make group singing an extreme sport in these unusual times. Like other choirs we are keeping a close eye on the science and the recommendations, and staying away for the time being. There is a fair likelihood that singing together in the same place will be put on hold until 2020 is over but this doesn’t mean that singing has stopped. Just as so many have discovered the joys of working from home, so singers have found ways in

which the World Wide Web can keep them singing. If you haven’t seen Gareth Malone in action in his garden office, do have a look. You can take part in his Zoom rehearsals without worrying what other people will think. It’s just you, with a little help from Gareth. Who knows? You may surprise yourself. You may think ‘That’s not bad. I’ll record it and send it in’. Four of us have been experimenting with digital singing. We have each recorded a part of ‘Brightly Dawns Our Wedding Day’ from the Mikado, and I have been putting them together as a quartet. Not ready for international release yet, but we are learning. We hope to put bigger groups together (virtually) to keep as many people singing as we can. Okay, it’s not the same as getting together on a Monday evening and socialising, but it should be fun, even if we can’t compete with Eric Whitacre. If you haven’t seen what Eric has put together, it’s a must. Try this one for a start https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7o7BrlbaDs Photo: 2019 – those were the days. Looking forward to all getting together for the next concert.

Maritime Quiz Answers:

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

For more information call Greg at Andy Anderson & Son Locksmiths
