The Old Town Hall Community Tea Room

The Old Town Hall where the Community Tea Room is located has many and varied incarnations, it is the oldest building still in public use in the town and began life in c.1562 when it was the site where the Corporation met. This lasted until 1886 when by Act of Parliament, Corporations were abolished. Subsequent to this it has been where Courts of Assembly were held with jails beneath. Electoral votes were cast here to elect Members of Parliament, two of whom became Prime Ministers, Pitt in 1783 and Canning in 1827. Subsequently it was used by the Town Council, the Fire Brigade, St John ambulance, the Home Guard during the Second World War, and now ourselves.

There are pictures and a folder for new and existing customers to browse whilst having tea, coffee,biscuits and cake during our opening hours of Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm, and 10am to 12 noon on Saturday.
