Support our Seaford Charities

Sunday 5th September

Martello Rotary, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions, Seaford Rotary, Seaford Bonfire Society and the National Coastwatch Institution, are cooperating to plan and run Support our Seaford Charities a fun-filled fundraising event on the Martello Fields on Sunday 5th September. These five local service organisations have realised that most, if not all, of our Seaford charities and ‘not for profit organisations’ experienced difficulties in fund-raising for most of last year and into this year. This was because of the pandemic and its restrictions, charity shops closed, and fundraising volunteers required to socially distance or quarantine. This has resulted in our Seaford charity sector having less money than it needs and on-going challenges in raising money. The five service organisations have come together to support the ‘Mayor’s Charity Initiative’. Councillor Rodney Reed invited charities and ‘not for profit organisations’ based in Seaford or delivering their services and support in Seaford to join in this support project and nearly 40 of them have accepted. This Mayor’s support includes profile raising for them using his Mayor’s Facebook and the video interviews now being posted to Facebook and support for the groups in their fundraising. Our Mayor recognised it was not possible to choose just one or two charities for support during his first or in this his second year in office, because so many worthy local causes urgently need funds.

Support our Seaford Charities on Sunday 5th September is to help these groups raise the funds they need. It builds on the success of Seaford Rotary’s recent Over the Rainbow sponsored walk and uses the same approach – whatever the charities and the other participating ‘not for profit’ groups raise on the day they keep. The organisers want this to be a fun-filled day so there will be a large central arena with music and dance performances by local choirs, singing groups and young people throughout the afternoon. This will include contributions from the Seaford Silver Band and Sunshine Strummers. There will also be sports demonstrations including women’s football, rugby minis, the ‘toddle bubble mini marathon’ with other sports to be announced later. There will be a lot of charity stalls with activities for the whole family, as well as face painting and a family picnic area. Martello Rotary’s Tavern in the Tent will be on site along with local businesses providing a range of food on their stalls during the day. The full programme for the event will be published near to its date. The stalls and the refreshment areas will open at 10am. From 12 noon to 4pm music and dance performances on the main stage will alternate with sports demonstrations in front of that sound stage in the central arena. Music will continue into the evening beside the Tavern in the Tent’. Wilder Gardens is a Greenhavens Network initiative and is growing from strength to strength. Our Champions have undergone First Aid training, Health and Safety and Risk Assessments as well as more exciting things like Bat and Moth training.

We have more training coming up in August and September, including workshops with BugLife, Sussex Butterfly Conservation Society, Sussex Bat Group as well as ‘making homes for nature’ sessions being run by Jessie the Wilder Garden Co-ordinator.

A Greener Seaford Community Climate & Eco Fair In 2018, Earth Overshoot Day fell on 1st August. Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. When we discussed partnering with Seaford Town Council to hold a community climate and eco fair, we chose this date to highlight this. It turns out this year, Earth Overshoot Day falls on the 29th July – two days earlier. If we were just looking at UK consumption, our overshoot day would fall on 21st May! What does this mean? It means we can’t carry on consuming the way we do if we want to leave a habitable world with enough resources for future generations. We need to think more about the resources we use. So, to show it can be done, the ethos of this fair is to show what we can do with the resources we have. This has the added bonus of not costing a lot of money! Over 40 local groups and organisations will come together to share their knowledge and skills to help us understand and learn more about how we can protect our environment. We decided to make the fair as sustainable as possible, we wouldn’t have anything for sale including food. Of course, we couldn’t make this happen without the fantastic volunteers who feel this is important enough to give their time and energy to discuss ideas, make things, prepare information, games, activities, and help on the day, all making an extra effort so we can be more sustainable. Thank you to the children of our local primary schools for decorating banners to advertise the fair. Any printed information posters and games we make will be reused in our climate hub and at future events. We will have a 100% off sale where we are giving away stuff for free to show how we have enough ‘stuff ’ already, we just need to think of better ways to redistribute it instead of burying or burning it and buying new!

14

The most noticeable waste at an event is food and food packaging. This is why we decided not to have any food stalls at this event. We invite you to join us in our challenge to make this event more sustainable by bringing along your own food and drink and joining us for a waste-free picnic. We have chosen the Salts because it is central, the train station and bus stops are nearby so it is easy to get public transport to the fair. As the Salts doesn’t have any bike parking, we will install a temporary bike park so please cycle down if you can. We will have a Repair Café stand where young people and adults can take apart broken electrical items that would have been thrown away and see how it was made. An added bonus of taking the items apart means we can distribute the parts into the relevant recycling points. Visit our talks tent to hear from expert speakers about a range of issues including – what climate change is, flightless travel and the circular economy. We would like to say a huge thank you to Dazzle Events who are very kindly donating a marquee to be used for the day, and to the Rotary Martello Seaford, who are also kindly donating the use of their marquee. We will borrow gazebos, tables, chairs and anything else we can. What we can’t borrow we will buy secondhand and then sell on if we can’t use them again in the future. So come along to the fair with a difference! We’ll have – games, activities, talks, art, a bug hunt, a 100%-off sale, storytelling for adults, music and more! C RY P T GALLERY Exhibitions at the Crypt

There is so much going on in the gallery now that restrictions have been minimised, and life and Seaford take on a sunnier hue. So here’s what’s happening this month. Until 3rd August you will be able to view work by Rosemary Drysdale. This is a collection of diverse work using mixed media from an artist who has exhibited widely in the south of England. Rosemary has been experimenting with more vivid images and the use of a variety of media. She hopes when you view her paintings you will gain a sense of the joy with which she approaches and executes her work. Cecily Tucker takes over from 7th to 15th August, showing mainly new paintings including local scenes painted during Lockdown, when she went out very early in the morning and viewed how the early hours transformed the ordinary into something new. The new work includes landscapes, streetscapes and still life. From 17th to 21st August the Crypt and 10 children from the Cabin Group at Seaford Baptist Church are getting arty and crafty by creating some lovely artwork. The group is being run by the gallery and will be working on the theme of the Seaside (of course!). The fabulous creations will be shown off at an exhibition on Sunday 22nd August from 10am until 1pm. It would be great to see you at their exhibition. The last days of the month, from 27th August to 1st September, Seaford Art Club presents its annual exhibition of recent works. There will be plenty of colour on show with the gallery’s 13th-century merchant’s undercroft providing the perfect backdrop for an eclectic mix of work by over 30 local artists. You will find original works for sale and unique gift cards, all at reasonable prices.

Make Tide Mills Flip Books with Filmspot Seaford-based film organisation, Filmspot, is taking part in the Tide Mills Project this September, creating animations which will be displayed on site at Tide Mills during the Heritage Celebratory Week (20th – 26th September), on large-scale video screens. The animations will represent characters from the history of Tide Mills, and will appear and disappear, ghost-like, giving a glimpse of past residents. You can be part of the installation, as Filmspot is calling on locals of any age and ability to help animate present residents of the area around Tide Mills! Come and create a simple flip-book animation of yourself, your family, friends – or even pets. It all takes place at the Crypt on 4th August. The workshop will run 10am – 4pm; booking will be available via Eventbrite, linked on the Crypt site, and at www.filmspot.org.uk. Leave your book with the Filmspot team, and they will digitise it and include it in the installation at Tide Mills. Animations from the workshop will also be projected into the windows of the Crypt on 21st and 22nd September. Find out more about the Tide Mills Project at www.tidemillsproject.uk

New Crypt Digital Showcase The Crypt’s lovely monthly challenge is no more, for now at least, as we glide back into something like normality. But despair not, the Crypt is ready to announce its next wonderful participatory event.

Later this year, on 4th September, the people behind London Craft Week are putting on something called Create Day (see createday.org), a global initiative celebrating the creative process, talented makers and their work. It involves artists and makers from around the world sharing what they do via live-streams, film, demonstrations, tutorials, tips and tours, all viewed on the website. Then, one week later, our little part of the world will see the opening of Artwave 2021, our local but no less inspiring and exciting window on creativity in the area. So, to mark both events and share the amazing art and craft work going on in homes and studios around us, the Crypt is asking you to send in photos and/or videos of you, your creative process or your creative output, be it painting, knitting, ceramics, willow weaving, photography or anything else that was born in your imagination and transformed by your hands into something original; whatever you’ve been up to, we want to see it and show it. We are still organising the submission process, technology and other necessary bits and pieces, so we’ll let you know how to do it as soon as we know how to,

Seaford Rotary A Golden Rainbow Walk

At the end of the Rainbow the true Pot of Gold we discovered was not just the money the event will raise for deserving causes, but the feel-good factor which it engendered. Rotarian Jean Cash’s brilliant idea, The Over The Rainbow Fancy Dress Walk in aid of The Mayor of Seaford’s Charity Initiative on Sunday 20th June, occurred in a glorious weather window after several days of unseasonable rain and gloom – and before a vast deluge the day after. Perhaps the sun does shine on the righteous after all! There was a parade of colour along Seaford Seafront as walkers wore bright, outlandish outfits on their journey between Splash Point and the Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club – and back again. There was no rush, with the chance to stop off for a drink and a breather, but there was fun and laughter all the way from Superheroes, Wise Owls, Colourful Councillors, pushchairs, trikes and wheelchairs, and Town Crier Peter White. Family groups, businesses, clubs, and societies were involved, most of them seeking individual sponsorship for their own choice of charity and wielding their collection buckets. People gave amazingly generously. Now the word has got out, we will be aiming for a real extravaganza next year because this simple format means practically everybody can take part. Covid-19 restrictions involved limiting the number of walkers who could set off at any one time, though the ideal is a mass start, when all the colourful costumes and happy smiling faces of the walkers can be seen all together. It was great to see the effort many teams put into their Rainbow outfits, some carrying collections buckets which were kindly filled by people out for a Sunday stroll and a cup of something from the kiosks. The sum raised by individuals and teams who took part for their nominated charities exceeded £3,000. Eleven charities will receive donations from the individuals and teams. In addition, approximately the £700 in registration fees raised by Seaford Rotary will be passed to The Mayor of Seaford’s Charity Initiative.

Particular mention should be made of a 9-year-old boy who has autism and type 1 diabetes, who completed the walk. His target was to raise £150 for the National Autistic Society – he raised £735! It really was a great day with a great future.

Presidential Handover On 30th June, President Martin McGill relinquished the Presidential chains of office to incoming President Mike Ogilvie. As last year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was still not possible for the Club to hold face-to-face meetings, including the traditional handover meeting at which the outgoing President reviews the past year, and the incoming President looks forward to his year in office. So, for the second time, the couriering of the regalia was repeated this year, and they magically appeared during a Zoom handover meeting. In his Presidential address President Mike Ogilvie acknowledged Immediate Past President Martin McGill’s contribution to managing the club during this time of national crisis. He continued: ‘It is a considerable honour for me to take my place as the next President of this wonderful club which has such a history and reputation of serving the community.’ Seaford Rotary welcomes new members. It’s a Cliffhanger! The generator is ordered. Lighting is organised and hanging boards are up, courtesy of the previous incumbents of derelict South Hill Barn – thanks Seaford Contemporary Illustrators and Printmakers (SCIP) who opened it up for the Green Show two years ago – and suddenly reopening this building isn’t such a nail-biter after all. All the effort involved in undertaking to stage an art exhibition in a ‘gallery’ with no mod cons, indeed utilities of any kind, is so worth it because the setting is superb. Look through the vast doors of this old barn and you get a snapshot of the Cuckmere Valley and its rising hills while outside… well, let’s just reflect on that iconic Seven Sisters view. You could be inside a painting… So what is going to be going on inside from 7th to 15th August? Well, Last Minute Artists have assembled a great and varied collection of locally based artists who are contributing to the Cliffhanger exhibition of hanging work in a multiplicity of media plus 3D art – so spare a thought for one of the artists, composer and musician Nigel Goss, who as you read this will be completing

the plinths that artists might usually expect a conventional gallery to supply. The multi-talented Nigel will be showing paintings and sculpture, some of an automaton nature, and his band Cushion the Blow will be playing from 5pm on Saturday 14th August, tickets on the door, £5. Entry to the exhibition is free from 10am until 4.30pm each day, and it will also include the varied work of artists such as painter and potter SallyMae Joseph, painter Sarah Gregson whose local countryside views are so loved, mixed media artists and painters Geraldine Edmunds and Susan Casebourne, plus invited artists including ceramicist Adrienne Shields, painters Sandra Chessum and Lisa Bagot, box artist Andrew McDonnell, stained glass artist Adele Walshe, and costume designer and maker Judy Dewsbery with her kimonos.

Making a special appearance will be some work by the mysterious Planksy – Seaford’s own Banksy – whose colourfully executed and sculpted birds and exotic animals are such a favourite feature of the town and around. Hungry and thirsty? Cottons Coffee Bar opens in the courtyard from Wednesdays to Sundays. seaford choral society update

What have we been doing?

Like most of you, we have been Zooming. It’s not like real singing together but at least you can have a chat once you are unmuted (yes, you are sitting singing to yourself most of the time). Thanks to our great musicians, Colin, John and Rebecca we have been honing our singing skills. One of our members, Carole, has been very busy painting, and selling her paintings for choir funds. They now adorn many walls from here to Harrogate. Drop us a line if you would like to see the ones that are left or commission one for yourself.

Back to real singing again?

It’s nearly time to sing together again. It is oft said that you don’t fully appreciate something until you lose it. I think we all appreciated getting together to sing, but there is certainly going to be something extra-special about getting together again after 18 months away. There are those things that are really hard to make yourself get back to after a break, like swimming or going to the gym, but singing doesn’t seem to be like that. Our singers are just raring to go.

Have you tried it?

We are starting on Monday 6th September. We rehearse at Seaford Baptist Church, starting at 7.15pm. For our first meet we will be performing Vivaldi’s Gloria just for fun. If singing some church music composed by someone who died 280 years ago doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, you may be surprised if you come along and give it a go. Vivaldi, like many of the great composers, had a wonderful sense of humour

and made sure singers and listeners alike would enjoy themselves. There won’t be an audience, so it doesn’t matter whether you know it backwards or never heard it before. It’s just about getting together to release all the tensions of the last 18 months. There’s no better way. If you fancy seeing what it’s all about, drop us a line on the website above and come along to give it a try.

Who are we?

SCS has been in existence for just over 100 years, providing local people with an opportunity to sing together. We have over 80 members of a range of ages, though we would like to welcome more younger singers. There is no audition, just an expectation that once in the choir you will make every effort to attend all possible rehearsals.

Dates for your diary 6th Sept – Back together with Vivaldi. 27th Nov – Welcome back concert – Vivaldi, Haydn et al – St Leonard’s Church. 11th Dec – Festival of Christmas Music – St Andrew’s Church, Alfriston (‘The Cathedral of the Downs’) Book your tickets online: seaford-choral-society.com We’d love to hear from you.

SINGING FOR FUN For adults of all ages and abilities Like to sing for the sheer joy of it? ...then join us each week for a time of musical fun!

Wednesdays 11am – 12pm Thursdays 7pm – 8pm Seaford Baptist Church Price £6 on the door

The Power of Music Have you ever wished you could play a musical instrument? Since lockdown, many of us have been reevaluating our priorities, and discovering different ways to bring joy and meaning to our lives. Music has always been known to help lift our spirits, and learning to play an instrument can be a hugely enriching experience which brings significant benefits, both mentally and physically. As a violinist, I have been fascinated by a certain scientific experiment, which analysed brain scans of violinists whilst playing. These scans showed that every single area of the brain was actively involved in playing the violin. In my experience, I find this total involvement of the brain gives me a break from worries, and calms my mind. There are so many fantastic benefits which come from learning a musical instrument – too many to list, so why not realise your ambition today, and start having lessons! Maeve Jenkinson (Musical Director of the Corelli Ensemble) currently has a few vacancies for new pupils. She is a highly qualified and experienced violin teacher and performer, and teaches both adults and children, of all levels. She is DBS checked. During lockdown, one to one lessons continued successfully over the internet. This remains a viable option for those who need to take extra care. If you are interested in having violin lessons, please visit my website where you can find more information about me, and use the contact form: maevejenkinsonviolin.weebly.com 07765 715729 To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

Seaford War Memorial Restored to its Former Glory

Thanks to generous donations Seaford’s Sutton Park Road War Memorial has been renovated. In advance of Armed Forces Day 2021, Saturday 26th June, and to mark its centenary year, Seaford Town Council made arrangements for the war memorial on Sutton Park Road to be cleaned and have the inscriptions repainted. The work, carried out by specialist contractors, would not have been possible without the donations from Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association and Seaford Rotary Club, so the Town

Council extends it thanks on behalf of the town for their contributions. This war memorial, which is one of many war memorials and monuments within the town, was originally erected in 1921 in Dane Road but was re-sited in 1952 to its current location. The memorial is in memory of those who laid down their lives for their country and commemorates men from the South African War, First World War and Second World War, including Seaford civilians who lost their lives in the latter. Since its re-siting, the war memorial site has also welcomed the installation of the commemorative Tommy bench in 2019 and the memorial paving stone for Major Cuthbert Bromley VC, unveiled in 2015 on the 100th anniversary of the week of his death. Regrettably, the Seaford Armed Forces Day Committee was forced to take the decision to cancel the Armed Forces Day event again this year due to COVID restrictions in place and in line with guidance on the safe holding of events. However, the Armed Forces flags were flying at the Martello Fields on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 26th June, in order to allow safe space for people to visit the flags to pay their respects. The public is also being encouraged to pay tribute online to the British Armed Forces community for their hard work, dedication and efforts – by using #SaluteOurForces you can join this tribute with photos of your salutes on the Armed Forces Day Facebook or Twitter pages.

School’s Out – But the Seaford Property Market is Still Open There’s a widely held belief that the summer leads to a dip in housing transactions. The kids are off school, so mums, dads, grandparents, and all other caregivers are busy trying (and sometimes failing) to supply six or so weeks of entertainment. However, these busy families only represent a small part of the home-seeking market. And while our glorious unspoilt beach may be filled with sun-seekers and day-trippers, many people use the summer holidays to find a new home. Especially as our options for a fortnight abroad are ever-changing due to current Covid rules – here and abroad.

Home Seekers

The summer holidays give a chance to those who work within the education system – sixth forms, universities, and adult learning providers – to put away their red pens and move home themselves. And all these teachers and support staff are now in the market, looking for their next home. These people can now get out and start viewing properties to begin the moving process before September rolls around again. People often don’t realise how long moving home can take. It’s not just a case of putting your property on the market and finding a new home. There are then weeks, or maybe months, of time while the solicitors do their work.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

If you’re thinking of moving and want to be in your next home by Christmas, now is a fantastic time of year to find a highly motivated buyer. Not only could you see in the New Year in your new home, but you’ll also be settled and comfy, no longer living out of boxes and suitcases. So, it’s worth remembering if you are thinking of selling your home this summer that although schools may be out, motivated buyers are very much in the market right now. This is true especially in Seaford, where we are witnessing record demand for properties. Thanks for reading.

Attempted murder on Blatchington Beach

On the 30th of August 1833, the Coastguards on Blatchington Beach were surprised to see a man apparently trying to drown a young girl. Having dashed into the surf to stop the appalling act, they were more than surprised to find that the girl, Sarah Dean, was the man’s daughter. The man, one Philip Dean, a labourer, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder. Dean had been observed walking some distance on the shore carrying the girl, who he beat several times. On the water’s edge, he stripped her of her clothes and waded chest deep into the sea where he threw the little girl out into the sea, whereupon he turned and waded back onto the beach. The Coastguard and several other people had seen what happened and rushed to intervene. Seeing them Dean turned back and tried to retrieve his daughter from the sea. The rough sea brought the little girl back to the shore, half drowned and partly conscious.

It might have been expected that Dean would have been hanged at Lewes or Horsham Gaol, but there is no such record. A check on the list of convicts transported to Australia shows that Philip Dean was onboard the prison ship Arab on 22nd February 1834. Somehow his sentence had been commuted and some mercy had been shown, and Prisoner No 954 Philip or James Dean arrived in Tasmania in June that year. As for his daughter Sarah, there is no record of her life thereafter. Perhaps she entered the workhouse or found a place of safety with a new name elsewhere. We hope she enjoyed some kind of life thereafter. The research for this article and the original text was taken from On Blatchington Beach by Rodney Castleden.

At a nearby public house (probably the original Buckle), she was revived and examined by a Doctor Charles Verrall from Seaford. He revived her and noted many bruises on her legs and body, surmising that these had been inflicted by her father.

Removals & Storage

At his trial, Dean’s defence was that he had been travelling alone with Sarah for three or four years and had ample opportunity to murder her before, and had no intention of murdering her at any time. As he had drunk twelve or thirteen pints of beer he was probably intoxicated and asked for mercy because of this.

H Full packing service available H Packing materials supplied

The jury found Dean guilty of his daughter’s attempted murder, but recommended clemency. However, the judge felt he would be failing to do his duty if he were to offer any hope of mitigation of sentence. Dean was sentenced to death. Sarah was handed to her father for a moment who embraced the little girl with tears in his eyes. She was too young to understand what was going on and smiled at her father.

Trees for Seaford – heritage tree trail In June our volunteers were again busy on the verges, maintaining the trees we planted in Westdown Road and Grosvenor Road. A few of us even managed to find enough sunshine and time to have a very pleasant picnic in the Salts afterwards! Please look out for young trees on the verges which were planted for everyone to enjoy, and do let us know if you spot any problems. If we finally get a run of dry summer weather, then any trees near you may appreciate some water when you are passing! Also in June we were delighted to welcome Keith Sacre of Barcham Trees to Seaford, with his specialist knowledge and visionary approach to tree projects. Although planting new trees is important, we also need to appreciate and protect our existing trees, and to do that we really need to know what trees we already have, and why they are important! We’ve started working on a ‘heritage tree trail’ for Seaford and Keith kindly agreed to help. On a very wet Monday morning, he met a small group of us to walk around Seaford and gave us some fantastic ideas of stories round the trees we walked past, that could be developed as part of our trail. It’s not necessarily the oldest, or rarest trees that are needed. We could use trees that highlight our history, linking in with other historical heritage trails in town that are currently being updated. We hope to use modern technology such as QR codes on the trail so that people can find out more. We might choose examples of trees to show how the aspect, soil and geography of the town, affect the choice of trees and their health and development. We can learn more about the trees that thrive here, and the ones that are threatened by disease, pest and other challenges. We would also like the

42

trail to highlight how trees can counteract climate change. In previous projects Keith has calculated how much carbon individual trees or groups of trees are absorbing. It’s easy to walk past a tree barely noticing it, but if it had a sign or plaque on it, showing the carbon absorbed, and even a financial value of this valuable asset on it, maybe everyone would appreciate it more, in the same way that blue plaques around town alert us to historical points of interest. We spotted this tree (photo right) from the peaceful oasis of Bramber garden in Crooked lane, where it’s clear to see which way the prevailing winds come, and the tree frames the lovely view of Seaford head, and the seafront at the Martello Tower. Our trail is in the early planning stages, so we are keen to hear from anyone in Seaford who has a favourite tree, or knows of a tree that has an interesting history, or is an unusual or particularly old specimen. The trees need to be in public spaces, or if in private gardens to be seen from the road. We would love to hear all about your favourite trees and the reasons they are so special to you. Please contact us on Facebook or email treesforseaford@ gmail.com. Finally an update on our ‘Hidden spaces of Seaford’ article, do pop into Micklefield Park which is looking fantastic at the moment, with swathes of wild flower annuals, which are buzzing with bees and butterflies! If you are interested in wild flower planting, you may like to join our sister group ‘On the Verge’ #Seafordontheverge https://treesforseaford.wordpress.com/ Photos from top: Tree in Crouch Gardens; Garden near Crooked Lane; Micklefield Park.

Waste no time worrying about dementia, but instead avoid these four myths… We are all at some point frightened of those things that we do not yet understand, because we have evolved to stay away from those things that could potentially harm us, whether sabre-toothed tigers in our caveman days, unpleasant tasting drinks handed to us or stories of dangers lurking. However, as we have grown in knowledge and understanding, we are able to discern the difference between tales of possible negative effects and instead look into steps we can take to live with risks, avoid dangers and perhaps even change outcomes through positive actions. It is important therefore to separate fact from fiction when talking about the debilitating aspects of dementia, so we have assembled four myths associated with dementia that were recently discussed by Dr Kailas Roberts in the Guardian so that we can learn to avoid unhelpful discussion in coping with this disease.

Myth 1: Memory loss is an inevitable part of dementia

This is not the case and absence of memory loss does not mean dementia is not present. Alzheimer’s, with which dementia is most often associated, is just one form of the disease and happens to be closely linked with memory loss. Other symptoms could include personality changes; issues with language; alterations in behaviour; and the effects of compromises in different areas of the brain and the functions that they control.

Myth 2: Ageing is the biggest risk factor for dementia

Old age does not cause dementia, though the risk does increase each decade, but those with dementia in their 80s are still a minority in that age-group. It could be just as likely that other risk factors, such as general health and lifestyle behaviours, have had just as strong an impact.

44

Myth 3: Nothing can be done about dementia

At Clifden House we strongly believe that it is not only possible to live a rich and meaningful life with dementia, but even to thrive with the disease. A truly independent lifestyle may not be possible if you struggle to maintain a proper diet or forget to take important medication. Once these and other important issues are under the watchful eyes of carers, the shackles can be released on other meaningful areas, such as socialisation and creativity that give us such a strong sense of our self and worth.

Myth 4: Dementia is inevitable

If we feel that the cards have been played and we must simply accept the outcome, we hand over our ability to plan a healthy future and make it more likely that important decisions about our lives will be made without us, even if by those with our best intentions at heart. This places a huge burden upon them and opens up the risk that we are forced into a lifestyle we would not have chosen for ourselves. Positive interventions with assessments, medication and ongoing oversight can prolong the period of our healthy life and reduce the anxiety of a debilitating condition. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford Two members have once again come together to guide the Club. This will be the second year when the duties and responsibilities of Club President are shared. A change ‘at the top’ is always refreshing so that new ideas and personalities can influence the path ahead. For Patricia Haswell this will be her first time leading an Inner Wheel Club. She currently lives in Peacehaven but spends a lot of her time in Seaford. On retiring Patricia moved down to East Sussex with her late husband Terry 35 years ago to be close to family. Having served on Peacehaven Town Council for a number of years her experience in community work is soundly based. As a balance to this work Patricia took up line dancing! ‘That will be a 9 day wonder’ commented husband Terry but 25 years later she is still dancing! When asked about the year ahead she commented: ‘I look forward to being joint President of the Inner Wheel Club and working with Eileen, an established, long-serving member.’ Eileen Lynch came to Seaford to take up a teaching post at Seaford Head School in 1980. When she retired she joined Inner Wheel and has been a member since 2004. This will be her second spell as President. Married to Ian, with two grown-up children and one grandchild, plus a Labrador, her time is easily filled with family, walking the dog, folk dancing, book clubs and general socialising.

Ketchup is found in 97 percent of homes, but there’s more to it than burgers or hotdogs. In fact, ketchup dates back to imperial China. It was originally made with fermented fish entrails, meat by-products and soybeans... yum! This fish sauce was easy to store on long ocean voyages. The tomato-based ketchup we love today wasn’t invented until 1812. Tomato plants were brought to England from South America in the 1500s, but amazingly their fruits weren’t eaten for centuries because some people thought they were poisonous. The 1700s were a golden age for ketchup. There were recipes made from oysters, mussels, mushrooms, walnuts, lemons, celery, and plums. Usually, the ingredients were either boiled down into a syrup-like consistency or left to sit with salt for extended periods of time. This resulted in a highly concentrated end product: a salty, spicy condiment that became extremely popular. In 1812, someone finally thought to use tomatoes in the recipe. James Mease, a Philadelphia scientist, is credited with developing the recipe. Initially preservation of tomato ketchup was an issue because the fruits decomposed quickly. A relatively new company called Heinz developed a formulation which included, brown sugar, salt, spices, and distilled vinegar. They also pioneered the use of glass bottles, so customers could see what they were buying. Today, Heinz is the best-selling brand of ketchup the UK. 650 million bottles and 11 billion sachets are sold around the world each year. Something to consider next time you order a hotdog! The leaflets have been printed, the posters are all ready for the noticeboards and at the time of writing Seaford Community Cinema is waiting for the go-ahead from the government to resume business as near to usual as possible. To cheer us all up a generally light-hearted programme has been compiled for your autumn entertainment. SCC’s re-opening begins al fresco with films at Florence House, Southdown Road, thanks to the generosity of Mairin Colleary, on Sunday 5th September. Doors open at 3pm for the 4pm showing of A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (U). This stop-motion film about an alien who crashlands near Mossy Bottom Farm should greatly amuse adults and children alike. Directed by Will Becher and Richard Phelan, it stars Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes and Amalia Vitale. Can our Shaun outwit the sinister organisation out to capture the inter-galactic visitor? Doors open again at 6pm for the 7pm showing of The Greatest Showman (PG), directed by Michael Gracey and starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams and Zac Ephron. This high-wire extravaganza imagines a scandalous relationship between Big Top impresario Barnum and Jenny Lind. You’ll be singing along to songs such as the glorious and Oscar-winning This Is Me. Feel free to picnic – the show will go on whatever the weather – and enjoy Holy Cow Ices, crêpes from Crêpes de la Crême and drinks from the licensed bar, from which profits will go to this year’s chosen charity, The Youth Counselling Project. It’s back to the Barn Theatre in Saxon Lane for the remainder of the autumn programme, starting with Summerland (12) on Friday 10th September at 7.30pm. Directed by Jessica Swale and starring Gemma Arterton, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Penelope Wilton, Tom Courtenay and Lucas Bond, this film should appeal to all the senses

54

with beautiful local scenery standing in for the not so white cliffs of Dover and a storyline that sees good triumph over bad in a World War II but bucolic setting. Next up, on Friday 24th September, is delightful semiautobiographical drama Minari (12) about South Korean immigrants who struggle on their Arkansas farm until the grandmother shows her young grandson how to plant water celery. Many critics named this as the best film of 2021 and it earned six Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director for Lee Isaac Chung. British independent comedy The Man in the Hat (12) is the directorial debut of composer Stephen Warbeck who will be at the Barn on Friday 8th October at 7.30pm to talk about the film, a musically-rooted road movie redolent of a whimsical French car chase film. Starring Ciáran Hands, Stephen Dillane, Maïwenn, Brigitte Roüan, Sasha Halls, Muna Otaru and Mark Padmore, The Upcoming described it as the perfect film to see for these troubled times. The Peanut Butter Falcon (12), Friday 22th October at 7.30pm, is another uplifting movie about a young man with Down’s Syndrome who runs away from his care home to pursue his dream of becoming a pro wrestler only to hook up with an outlaw on the run. This alternately moving and funny film was directed by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz and stars Zack Gottsagen, Shia LaBoeuf, Ann Owens and Dakota Johnson. The Old Town Hall Community Tea Room The Old Town Hall where the Community Tea Room is located has many and varied incarnations, it is the oldest building still in public use in the town and began life in c.1562 when it was the site where the Corporation met. This lasted until 1886 when by Act of Parliament, Corporations were abolished. Subsequent to this it has been where Courts of Assembly were held with jails beneath. Electoral votes were cast here to elect Members of Parliament, two of whom became Prime Ministers, Pitt in 1783 and Canning in 1827. Subsequently it was used by the Town Council, the Fire Brigade, St John ambulance, the Home Guard during the Second World War, and now ourselves. There are pictures and a folder for new and existing customers to browse whilst having tea, coffee, biscuits and cake during our opening hours of Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm, and 10am to 12 noon on Saturday.

Seaford Striders Couch to 5k participants go the distance ‘Graduates’ from Seaford Striders’ Couch to 5K (C25K) programme buddied up with members to tackle their final challenge last month.

knowing no one we came down to the Salts on that first Tuesday. I was rather glad to spot two people I did know (Greg who is a member, and Paula who wasn’t). I was really impressed with the welcome and the way that a member of the club would walk/shuffle/jog alongside us as we went out chatting to us checking that we’re OK.’ James added that neither himself, nor Lucy, had done any form of exercise which had resulted in them getting out of breath for a long time, but this didn’t prove a problem to joining a group. As well as

With Seaford Beach Parkrun suspended due to Covid restrictions, the group paired up with experienced Striders to complete the challenge, running from Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club towards Splash Point. Striders members ensured their C25K counterparts stayed the distance by keeping time – as well as giving gentle encouragement along the way. This year’s C25K programme was run with a difference with 39 participants starting the nine week programme operated in accordance with social distancing measures from England Athletics. Heather and Stuart Westcott were joined by their son and daughter David and Zoë, taking a whole family approach to the C25k programme. Zoë said: ‘We are so happy we made the decision to join Seaford Striders for their Couch to 5K Programme. Every single member is so friendly and supportive, encouraging us the entire time to complete the 9-week course and finish the 5k Graduation Run.’ She added: ‘We joined up as a family, which helped us to stay committed to the training during the week, and although one of us had to drop out due to health problems, we can’t wait for our family to officially join Seaford Striders and run with that amazing group of people on a regular basis. Thank you to everyone at Striders for showing Team Westcott that running can be an enjoyable experience!’ Seaford also has a quicker vicar, thanks to the Striders’ C25K programme. Vicar of St Leonard’s and St Luke’s, James Hollingsworth, was signed up to the programme by his wife Lucy, who spotted Couch to 5K on Facebook. He explained: ‘Rather reluctantly and

improving his fitness, James also found friendship – as well as some anecdotes to add to his sermons. He explained: ‘One Strider asked if I was the jogging vicar, to which all I could reply was that that’s only a halftruth. I genuinely didn’t think it would be possible to get this far, so the design of slow increments and constant encouragement has been really good. It’s been so good that I’ve used Seaford Striders as an example in my sermons about what good welcoming looks like!’ James and Lucy also used the C25K app between sessions to keep up the momentum. James said: ‘It’s been this odd mix of exercise, which is the point of it all, and friendship which has been an added bonus that has helped keep us going. There’s an interesting honesty and vulnerability, chatting to each other after we’ve succeeded together to get this far. We’re probably smelly and we certainly don’t look our best – but it’s a good inclusive moment!’ Notice: This issue of Seaford Scene has been distributed by an independent delivery company. An estimated 360,000 who lost their jobs in March or April 2020 are still unemployed a year on. A further 2.4 million people on Universal Credit are still looking for work. Young people, disabled people and single parents are facing an uphill struggle in the labour market. These groups already at a disadvantage when jobhunting have been hardest hit in the pandemic, risking an unequal recovery and long-term economic scarring. Nationwide since March last year, the charity’s frontline advisers have supported more than 450,00 people and seen hundreds of cases where the rules in Universal Credit are making it harder for people to find work.

Seaford u3a News

We’re back! Seaford u3a has held its first face-to-face events since it was hit by the Covid pandemic last year. The first event was a coffee morning at the Con Club in Crouch Lane, Seaford which was well attended by members and much enjoyed. Further coffee mornings will probably follow on the third Wednesday of each month at the Con Club from 10am until 12 noon. These are open to members and non-members, and there will be a modest charge to cover the coffee and light refreshments. The craic is free! There is no need to book – just come along and join in. Other ‘live’ events have included the start of a series of talks entitled ‘A glimpse of Tibetan culture’, given by one of the members who has had the experience of living in the foothills of the Himalayas for eighteen years and following the teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This was told in four documentaries which drew together different aspects of Tibetan culture and provided a fascinating glimpse into this secluded world. In July there are two more live events planned, a free ‘Welcome Back’ buffet for members to be held at the Con Club and the first pub lunch for members since the Covid break to be held at the White Lion. Both of these are after this article has gone to press but will be reviewed next time. There is a strong programme of groups which were showcased last month in Seaford Scene. There is also a good programme of talks by members at The Downs Leisure Centre. They start in September and run

through to March, ranging from Late Tsarist Russia and Women behind famous men to the art of Raphael and his contemporaries and Early Netherlands art. The Members’ Interests talks will also begin again at The Downs in December and run through to March. One of the events which was very popular with members in pre-Covid times was the Tea Party. Here an outside speaker regaled members with a talk on one of a wide variety of subjects followed by an afternoon tea of sandwiches and cake. These will be starting as soon as possible, probably in September. The member who organised outings is also raring to get going again and it is hoped that soon members will be able to experience more exhibitions, garden visits and historic places in visits that they have enjoyed so much. The Sussex u3a Network (SUN) has a programme of monthly Zoom talks for members. Seaford u3a is a part of SUN and its members can access the SUN programme. Before Covid SUN ran study days and talks which members could attend and it is to be hoped they can start again. Sticking with computers, two Seaford u3a members have set up a Facebook page where members can share information about forthcoming events, reviews of events they have attended, and suggestions for future groups and events. For more information about Seaford u3a (particularly pre-Covid) see the website www.u3asites.org. uk/seaford. Sussex Wildlife Trust

The Good, The Bad and The Hairy

Once upon a time in the West Country. Dartmoor. August. High noon. A young boy wanders away from a family picnic. The sun beats down, buzzards cry and circle overhead. He is startled by a short, snappy rattle like bullets spinning in a revolver. Suddenly he is face to face with an amazing creature. A fly. But a fly like no other. The boy reaches for his camera – but he’s too slow. With a rattle the fly launches itself into the air and is gone. That first encounter with the hornet robberfly is one of my earliest and most vivid wildlife memories and had a huge impact on me. I searched through all my ‘I-Spy’ and ‘Spotter’s Guide’ books but couldn’t find anything that looked remotely like the beast I had seen. For years I believed I had encountered some weird, mythical beast and I vowed to hunt one down and photograph it to prove its existence. And they don’t come much weirder than the hornet robberfly. There are 28 species of robberfly in Britain and the hornet robberfly is the leader of this wild bunch. At up to 28mm long, it’s Britain’s biggest fly with a dusty yellow abdomen giving it a hornet-like resemblance. It has huge oval black eyes and a big ginger beard, the overall appearance lying somewhere between an alien and Yosemite Sam. The rootin’, tootin’ robberfly is a ferocious critter, although they never bother humans. But a grasshopper’s knees start knocking at the mere mention of its name. Like all good western bandits, they’ll wait on a high point in their long grass landscape until an unfortunate grasshopper wanders into their valley. Then, with their rattling, buzzing war-cry, they’ll swoop down and snatch up their victim in their hairy legs. Hornet robberflies dispatch their prey with a lethal weapon – a sharp beak which pierces a grasshopper’s tough armour and drains the very life from them. They lay their eggs on cowpats and their young bury into the soil where they hunt

underground for three years before emerging as adults in late summer. Hornet robberflies are extremely rare and getting rarer; a vanishing memory of a bygone age when our countryside was truly wild and not sterilised by insecticides. I had to wait decades to see another hornet robberfly. I was drifting through the high plains of Sussex when I heard a rattle from behind me and I was instantly transported back to that little boy on Dartmoor. But this time I was ready. My hand tightened around my camera. Ready to draw, point and shoot as I turned to face an old friend. This August, organise a posse and head out into them-thar South Downs hills for a wildlife walk and see what varmints you can find. SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB

Flaming June was the competition theme for June, although the title turned out to be rather inappropriate as June was anything but flaming! However, we were still lucky to have some beautiful arrangements sent to us by members. At the time of writing, we believe that we will be able to recommence our meetings in August. We therefore hope to meet on Thursday 19th August at the Seaford Baptist Church in Belgrave Road at the new time of 1.30pm until 3.30pm. This meeting will be a demonstration by Flowers and Pots, the new florist in Seaford, and we are all excited at the thought of being able to get together as a club. For those intending to renew their membership, subscriptions will be due on that date (£30 per year) and we charge visitors £5 to attend our meetings. For any further details, please contact Mary on 01323 893899 or Sue on 01323 894848.

Seaford Photographic Society We are in our summer break at the moment but are still holding a few low-key informal events for any members who want to participate. Some of us recently met up in Alfriston for photo get-together and a bit of socialising. We had a very pleasant stroll down the west side of the river and back up the east side. We are also organising monthly fun summer competitions with set subjects, to encourage people to get out and about with their cameras. Members vote for their favourite images and we then get together on Zoom to view and talk about them. We thought this would be a good opportunity to tell you a bit more the club and what we do. Looking back to the 2019/20 season, our meetings stopped abruptly in March 2020 with the first lockdown, but we managed to keep the club going for the whole of the 2020/21 season by holding all meetings online via Zoom. We have been delighted with how successful this has been, and not only did nearly everybody stick with us but we gained some new members as well. It also enabled us to source some very special speakers from further afield, who wouldn’t have been able to visit in person. We are now all looking forward to the start of the new season in September, when we will hopefully be meeting in person again at our usual venue, for the first time in 18 months! The programme for the year has now been finalised and is available to see on our website.

Geering Electrical

Our programme features a mix of competitions, lectures, illustrated talks, workshops and practical evenings. The competitions are very popular and cater for both prints and projected digital images (PDIs) so, if you are not used to printing, you can enter images straight out of the camera. Don’t be put off by the idea of competitions – you will find these are excellent for learning and developing your skills. The very experienced visiting judges are fully trained and they provide constructive criticism of the photos that people enter. They concentrate on the positive aspects of what works and why, but provide guidance on how the images could be improved. All this is anonymous, unless you get a high score, so there’s no question of having your photo pulled apart in front of everybody! There’s no pressure to enter the competitions – you can just come along to watch and learn if you like.

There is much more information on our website www. seafordps.org, which is updated every week. It features all our latest news, competition results, successful images, members’ galleries, programme of events etc, plus a contact form if you want to get in touch by email. We are always happy to respond to queries.

If you are keen on photography and have been thinking about joining us, whether you are a beginner or more experienced, just come along to one of our meetings where you can chat with existing members and even join us for a drink in the bar. Joining a camera club is a great way to meet up with like-minded people as well as learning loads of new stuff and improving your photography. We meet on Fridays from September to the end of May at Seaford Constitutional Club, Crouch Lane. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.45pm start. We are a friendly club that caters for all age groups and abilities, and people join for many different reasons. Some come for the social aspect and to chat about photography, others to see the lectures and talks, or show their work by entering competitions and getting feedback. The main thing though is that we all want to learn and improve. We know there are a lot of keen amateur photographers around locally, so why not come along to see what you think? The first meeting of the new season is on Friday 3th September.

Veggie Burgers

Preparation Time: 20-30 minutes Cooking time: 20-30 minutes Makes: 6 burgers

Ingredients

3-4 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion, peeled, thinly sliced 250g/9oz firm tofu, finely chopped 1 cooked beetroot (not in vinegar), peeled, grated 150g/5½oz fried mushrooms, drained 1 carrot, peeled, grated 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional) 1 garlic clove, peeled, crushed 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme 1 tbsp chopped kidney beans salt and freshly ground black pepper

To serve

6 burger buns 6 tbsp ready-made mayonnaise (optional) 3 beefsteak tomatoes, thickly sliced 2-3 gherkins, sliced

S. R. DAVIS & SONS ESTABLISHED 1978

BUILDERS & DECORATORS UPVC FACIAS & GUTTERS for all maintenance repairs & alterations

Method

Heat half the sunflower oil in a pan over a low heat and fry the onions for 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are softened, translucent and beginning to turn golden-brown. In a bowl, mix together the cooked onions, tofu, beetroot, mushrooms, carrots, smoked paprika (if using), garlic, thyme and kidney beans. Season to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Divide the mixture into six equal portions and shape into burgers. It’s easier to do this if your hands are a little damp. Heat the remaining sunflower oil in a frying pan and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side, until goldenbrown. You can finish cooking them for a few more minutes and serve them like this but I prefer to heat a griddle pan until smoking hot, then add the cooked burgers and fry for a further 1-2 minutes on each side, until there are clear deep char lines. Serve the burgers in buns and add any extras of your choice, such as tomato slices, gherkins, chargrilled peppers, salad leaves, coleslaw or mayonnaise.

SAVE SEAFORD’S SWIFTS

The aim is awareness and protection! Have you ever heard the sound of birds ‘screaming’ above you and wondered what they are, or what they are doing? In case you didn’t know, these are swifts that come over from Africa every year, and nest in our homes! The ‘screaming’ or whistling, is presumably their way of communicating when they are feeding in their family groups, possibly with their young, and they always look like they are loving every moment – it’s wonderful to watch these fantastic aviators of the sky! They prefer to nest in older houses and due to our desire to modernise/improve homes, nests have been lost and consequently, caused a decline in their population. Not just here but everywhere! As well as this there is a severe decline in insects due to the use of pesticides! They are amazing birds, they eat, mate and sleep on the wing, so the only time they land anywhere is to build a nest and raise their chicks. The birds will return to the same nest year after year, and so will their young, once maturity is reached. As a result, swifts have evolved with small feet and legs, and do not have the ability to perch. As with so much of our wildlife, swifts are struggling to survive in our world – the aim is to raise awareness and encourage locals to engage with the swifts, and

respect their wish to inhabit our town, which is only for a few months every year from May to August. So do keep watch on the birds and note, if possible, where they appear to be nesting. One tool to use is an app called Swift Mapping, where sightings of a scream of swifts can be reported. A leaflet drop is due to be carried out in the areas where birds have been spotted nesting in Seaford. The leaflet will advise householders of the need to look out for the birds and not disturb the nests, and in the event of any external/roofing work to be carried out on buildings, to be sensitive to the needs of our wildlife. If they are known to be nesting in your property, we ask that you delay any such work until they have once again departed, usually by mid August. Consideration could then be given to erecting a swift box for the next generation. Certainly, swifts do not do any damage to a property or make a mess! www.Swift-Conservation.org is a very good website with lots of information, locally and nationally, with photographs, ideas for putting up nesting boxes, recommendations and a great deal of other information. The leaflet drop is being organised by Greenhavens Network so if you would like to help out, please see their Facebook page. The 2nd step is to encourage householders to have swift boxes fitted in and around Seaford, and thus entice more birds to breed here. If swift boxes or swift bricks are installed near known nesting sites, this will encourage more birds to nest nearby, as apparently, they look out for suitable nesting sites before departing! By the time you read this article, the swifts will be preparing to leave our skies once again, so look up now! Our skies will be a much quieter place once they are gone for another year! If you’d like more information, please follow the Facebook page, SAVE SEAFORD’S SWIFTS, where updates will be posted. Photo: © Inger Lund, www.swift-conservation.org

Five Reasons to Wear Sunspecs in the Sun

Sunglasses protect your eyes from the elements

Sunbathing, skiing or biking on a dirt track, sunglasses can protect your eyes from sand, wind and dust, all of which can irritate or scratch the delicate cornea.

Sunglasses help prevent certain eye diseases related to the sun

Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays can lead to early onset cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygium. Cataracts involve a clouding of the eye’s lens that requires an operation to correct; macular degeneration results from deterioration of the macula of the retina, which permanently destroys central vision; and pterygium involves tissue growth on the eyeball. Wearing sunglasses that have good UV protection helps keep your eyes healthier, longer.

Wearing sunglasses (particularly those with polarised lenses) allows you to get out and about without triggering an attack.

You’ll look cool

It’s almost impossible not to look cool in good sunspecs. They hide dark circles on a no make-up day and add a touch of mystery. You can ring the changes with different styles, from rock chick edginess to Parisian chic. Wherever you’re going this summer (and let’s face it, in 2021 for most of us it will be the local park!) be sun-safe and be stylish! Sarah Davey

See more clearly!

Polarised sunspecs help you see better in bright light. They cut glare and improve your perception of colours and contrast. Even on somewhat cloudy days, wearing sunglasses while driving can improve your vision and cut down on glare. If you’re a fisherman, you’ll also be able to see past the surface of water more easily without all that bright, reflective glare.

Avoid headaches and migraines

For many people who regularly get migraines or bad headaches, bright sunlight can be a major trigger.

Summer Wine

Which tipple to choose for summer?

apple and citrus, and stay away from full-bodied chardonnays. Try Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. A more unusual option is Albariño, a beautiful refreshing Spanish wine. Rosés are fresh-tasting because they are meant to be drunk young. They tend to be fruity and vary from sweeter to dry. Either work nicely for a summer day, and sparkling rosés are particularly pretty and festive for summer celebrations. Try Grenache rosé served cold for a perfect crisp blend of tannins and acidity. Sangiovese rosé is slightly sweeter and fruitier, and perfect for warm summer evenings.

The summer months require a different approach to wine. We’re more likely to want something refreshing, or to mix it with soda water for a spritzer. Also, even staunch red wine-lovers often drift towards a white or a rosé as the temperatures rise. Look for a dry white with high acidity, a light to medium body. If you favour sweetness, try to make sure it also has high acidity. Look for fruity notes, particularly

Some folks just love their reds even in summer. However, avoid heavy, full-bodied varieties unless you want to feel sleepy and dehydrated. Look for lighter reds that are best served chilled, with low tannin and high acidity. Cinsault is probably my favourite summer red on account of its fruitiness. It’s nicely high in acidity too. Frappato is also a good summer choice with low tannins and a fresh taste. Lambrusco can be sneered at in some circles but it’s actually the perfect bubbly sweeter red for summer. Cheers! Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes

Andrew Whittuck A Life in Wide Angle

27th August – 5th September 2021 This will be Andrew’s second exhibition at the Star Brewery Gallery in Lewes following on from his very successful show in 2020 entitled ‘A Performance’.

and Antonio Carluccio, and his photographic credits also include cookery books for Sainsburys, Marks and Spencer, Tesco and Waitrose.

Andrew studied photography at the London College of Printing in the 1960s and whilst there documented the tragic Aberfan disaster in Wales where 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a slagheap collapsed which destroyed their school.

Other photographic assignments included taking photos for book covers featuring authors Christy Brown, author of My Left Foot, Melvyn Bragg, Alan Sillitoe, John Banville and Celia Dale. Andrew has documented all of artist Bobby Baker’s performances, as well as other visual artists’ work, including that of Damien Hirst, Donald Judd and Sydney Nolan, as well as working for the White Cube, the Lisson Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Craft Council and other London Galleries. He was a visiting lecturer at the London College of Printing where he originally trained, and the City Lit in Covent Garden, and many other colleges in and around London as well as running his own courses from his London studio.

After he left college he worked as a freelance photojournalist alongside writer Farrukh Dhondy and covered many stories including the band, ‘The Pink Flloyd’. Andrew was lucky enough to get close up shots of them in his studio using a tripod and their gig lighting and was able to make high-quality prints which no one else was able to do. He also took photos of them at the Abbey Road Studios as they completed their first album ‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ as well as other gigs around London. He and Farrukh Dhondy covered other stories together including ‘Maharishi and the Beatle’ with Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful before they went to North Wales for a ‘preach in’ with the Yogi, and thus launching Transcendental Meditation. A conference at the Roundhouse called ‘The Dialectics of Liberation’ featured Stokely Carmichael (the black power leader following the death of Malcom X), the beat poet Allen Ginsberg and R D Laing, the Scottish Psychologist. Andrew said that one of the most challenging stories he and Farrukh covered was ‘Undergraduate Strain and Breakdown’ at Cambridge University. This was prompted by the fact that out of six of their undergraduate friends, two had breakdowns and one sadly committed suicide. For many years, Andrew worked as a studio advertising photographer specialising in food and still life working for publications such as the Sunday Times, The Observer, The Daily Telegraph and magazines including Elle, Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Journal, A la Carte and Interiors. As a result of this Andrew worked with many chefs including Keith Flloyd, Marco Pierre White, Nigel Slater,

98

Since he left London he enjoyed working on landscape photography both in the UK and in France, where for a few years, he and his wife, Fawzia ran Landscape Photography Holidays from their home in the Corbière region of South West France. It was hard work, but he said it was great fun and so lovely to meet such a diverse group of enthusiastic photographers. He says that he has always enjoyed (and still does) sharing his knowledge of all things photographic which has been accrued from many years working in this very varied world which has been his life time’s work. Andrew received a Gold Award from the Association of Landscape Photographers for his still life work in 1985. He is currently preparing for his forthcoming exhibition of Landscape photography this summer which is called ‘A Life in Wide Angle’. If you want to see more of Andrew’s work do look on his website https://andrewwhittuck.co.uk/ and the Star Brewery Gallery’s website https:// www.starbrewerygallery.com/ Photo: Seven Sisters after Storm.

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Seaford Town Council

Green Spaces Offered for Community Use to Help Tackle Climate Change

Seaford Town Council met on 23rd June to discuss updates on a variety of current activities and pave the way for the next steps to be taken, including identifying exciting uses for some of the town’s lesser-used land and assets. The meeting was livestreamed to the Town Council’s YouTube channel, so can be watched at any time. The supporting paperwork is also available in full on the Town Council’s website.

Following the group’s creation in 2020, the Town Council received an update from its Assets Working Group, which included a list of recommendations for certain plots of land. These recommendations were all focused around increasing community use and involvement with green spaces, any potential for sponsorship or income from plots and one plot for sale on open market, if viable. The latter being the small, land-locked parcel of land owned by the Town Council behind Boots Chemist on Broad Street. Following the Town Council’s approval of all recommendations, one of the next steps will be to offer the relevant green spaces for community use. The Town Council will maintain ownership but this will enable the community to use the sites, such as to deliver work to tackle climate change on site; rewilding, community meadows, community food growing etc. This is a very welcome step in the right direction to help tackle climate change on a local level and gives members of the community the opportunity to not just be involved but coordinate and really take ownership of these initiatives.

scaffolding) and Lewes District Council (including plastic recycling methods); key financial updates following the closure of the 2020 – 2021 financial year; the ongoing consultation into changes of parliamentary boundaries (not directly impacting on Seaford but there is an impact on the Lewes constituency that Seaford is within); and the Town Council’s meeting arrangements in the coming months whilst COVID restrictions are still in place. In addition to the above, the Town Council is in the process of extending to a 50-year lease with Seaford Town Football Club for the clubhouse in The Crouch, enabling them to access more funding for their sport, facilities and invaluable community work. Finally, the Town Council also gave its support for the joint initiative coming out of recent meetings between the Town Council, Lewes District Council, and local anglers and swimmers, to trial ‘preferred swimming zones’ on the Seaford seafront. This will not be enforceable but is in place to guide swimmers and anglers on how best to safely use the beach together. The revised Seaford Beach Guide will be issued by the District Council in coming weeks. Town Council meetings are open for members of the public to attend or participate at. To sign up for updates on upcoming meetings, please email admin@ seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk or visit https://www.seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk/enquire/

The meeting also included discussions on: possible survey works on the Bronze Age hill fort/burial mount at Seaford Head; the Town Council’s plans following it declaring a climate change emergency; updates on Seaford-relevant activities by East Sussex County Council (including Exceat Bridge works and Talland Parade

Gales, buckets of rain and not a lot of sunshine have done no harm to our sheltered garden in the Crouch. On the contrary, plants have gone berserk and the team, including two new volunteers – welcome Lesley and Jackie – have been hard at it pruning, cutting back, harvesting the first of the produce and allowing a snatched minute or two to admire the burgeoning fruits of their endeavours. All this work was to ensure that the garden would be looking its best for the Macmillan Trail last month. Visitors would have noted cucumbers Mini Munch in the poly tunnel, which is still home to tomatoes, some even in hanging baskets above those ramping up their spiralled poles. Outside are more baskets of trailing tomatoes, fastened onto the runner bean pole structure, with deep purple-centred pinkish-mauve poppies providing a backdrop. Indeed these poppies are in odd spaces all over the garden, in keeping with a greener mode of gardening which welcomes a wilder look – so long as it is tamed. The roses are superb and, like the poppies, a tremendous draw for bees and other pollinating insects. Not an opportunity to plant is lost, and even the roof garden over the shed is home to a plume of grass among the sedums and house leeks, with wild strawberries planted on shelving on its end wall. And talking of strawberries, the more cultivated variety were being picked from the more conventional raised bed, and tasted delicious. Hopefully there will soon be enough to sell on the sales table – speaking of which, the courgettes were looking promising too. The garden will also be open on Saturday mornings (10am-12 noon) from 17th July so fingers crossed there will be something to tempt everyone.

110

As you read this the figs will still be plumping up against their sheltered brick wall, while the gooseberries were getting fat against the flint wall bordering the Peace Garden. Across the path blackcurrants, pears and apples from the step-over trees were doing well, but even last month’s storm couldn’t do nature’s work and dislodge enough of the fruit, so that was another task for Katie and James. Katie said: ‘Every year in June and July fruit trees drop some of their fruit because they couldn’t sustain it all. We gardeners also reduce them ourselves, so with a bunch of four apples, say, taking off one or even two. It feels harsh and mean but you have to steal yourselves to do it.’ James and Katie have also pruned the apples and plums to keep the trees the right shape and size and to allow more sunshine to get to the fruit. A big galvanised tank has been donated to the garden by Malcolm Pither and his wife and how that will be utilised is currently up for discussion with the big money going on a container for shade-loving plants. The pizza oven, apparently placed to provide a convenient stepping stone for those who don’t appreciate what a locked gate means, has consequently seen better days, so that’s another decision to be made, along with revamping the circular raised bed and replanting with some more sun-loving plants. That’s gardens for you, always changing. Come and see for yourselves on Wednesday mornings. The Garden Team Photos from top clockwise: Grasses on the roof; Figs love a

warm wall; James prunes the apples; Plump gooseberries; Roses, the scent of summer; Bees love the poppies.

Crocosmia

Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora, common montbretia, is an invasive non-native plant in the UK; since 2010 it has been illegal to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild, but less vigorous varieties of this cormous perennial are good for informal garden borders. The genus Crocosmia is part of the Iris family, and originates from South Africa. The first hybrids were bred in France in the 19th century and soon became popular in British gardens, where they grow best in moist but well drained soil in full sun. There are numerous Crocosmia available, mostly hardy, and all providing a fiery red/orange/yellow splash of mid to late summer colour. Some have Awards of Garden Merrit from the RHS, including the striking Crocosmia ‘Lucifer,’ a tall plant with long arching spikes of scarlet flowers. This eye-catcher is excellent for cut flowers. Or for a smaller variety try Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Emily McKenzie.’

Dear Members, following the lifting of Covid restrictions, I am pleased to tell you that we can meet once again commencing Tuesday 28th September at 7pm at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, Seaford. The speaker will be Gillian Edom, topic: Foraging for a Future. As I mentioned in the last edition, due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to find a new venue. This has meant that we have also had to change the night we meet. Please check the September edition of Seaford Scene for the latest information, but as this edition goes to press the programme for 2021 includes meetings on Tuesday 26th October at St Luke’s, speaker Darren Lerigo, topic: What Do I Do With This Space?, and on Tuesday 30th November at St Luke’s, when we will hold the AGM. Our handbook will be printed as usual, ready for starting the new year. Happy Gardening! Sara (Chair)

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD

the m

No show this August, but it looks like we could be getting back to normal. Hard work from Chair Sara has sorted a new venue, while Social Evening Secretary Jan has confirmed speakers for September and October. Well done to them. Applause also for Outings Organiser Pippa Logan, who led a coach trip to Cambridge University Botanic Garden on 3rd July. This outing had been cancelled in 2020, but 26 decided to board the 2021 coach and we were rewarded with a very interesting time at this wonderful garden. The garden dates from 1846, covers an area of 16 hectares (40 acres), and is well worth a visit. The next planned members’ coach outing is to RHS Wisley Flower Show on 9th September. There are still a few spaces if you are tempted (contact Pippa Logan for further details).

Jobs to do in August

3 Pull up onions and leave them to ripen on top of the ground until the green tops have withered away. 3 Prune rambler roses after flowering, but climbers are best left until spring. 3 Lavender cuttings are easy. Choose 3- to 4-inch non-flowering side shoots, gently pull from main stem, pot in sandy soil and keep watered. 3 Water camellias in very dry spells to prevent bud drop next spring.
