Welcome...

to the April issue of Seaford Scene. By the time you read this, the clocks will have jumped forward by an hour for daylight saving, so the evenings will be lighter and the dark nights shorter – spring is on it’s way! All being well, some Lockdown restrictions will have lifted and life will be starting to return to some normality! It’s Easter Sunday on the 4th with holidays on Good Friday the 2nd and bank holiday Monday the 5th, plus it’s St George’s Day on 23rd. In this issue we have news from Seaford Town Council who are holding a virtual Town Forum on the 20th – an online meeting open to the public, including awards and presentations – see pages 4 and 78. We get out and about in one of Seaford’s hidden green spaces on page 34, explore Seaford’s wild flowers on page 110 and visit a re-wilding project on page 6. Seaford’s garden trails will be opening up soon too, see page 43. On the theme of outdoors, we have news from Cycle Seahaven on page 58, and how about being involved with the ReCycle project and getting out on your bike? See page 72. You’ll learn how to repair and maintain your bike – it’s good for the environment and great for your health! And talking of good for your health, why not tune in to the Splash Point Jazz sessions on Thursday evenings, (see page 90) or have a go at the Crypt Gallery’s April challenge (page 108) or help to support the Youth Counselling Project (page 61)? All this and so much more throughout this issue. Happy Easter! Fran Tegg. Editor

COVID Hero Certificates in Seaford

The Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed, has awarded members of the community, nominated by the public, with certificates to recognise their relentless kindness, dedication and hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic. A show of appreciation and recognition of to some of our local unsung heroes during the pandemic.

The following organisations and individuals have received Certificates. Carole Pink – on behalf of a group who knit, sew and purchase items for the homeless under the care of ‘Surviving the Streets’. They have supported the staff at Eastbourne District General Hospital and paramedics with hampers and also helped animal charities. Esther Morgan – for her selflessness in volunteering with ‘Surviving the Streets’, helping the homeless over the winter with warm and waterproof clothing. Fler and Justin Wright of the WOLO Foundation – Fler and Justin have been providing food hampers and organising fundraising events. All funds have gone towards supporting families with a loved one who is battling cancer. Gill Morgan a Community Nurse who also volunteered by supporting vulnerable friends and family during the pandemic (photo top left). Julie Moore Scoop and Weigh – Julie was the most nominated recipient of this award in recognition of her amazing positive community spirit and going out of her way to check in on the vulnerable. Throughout the pandemic she collected prescriptions and other groceries for those isolating, organised raffles for the homeless and collected donations for the foodbank. (photo top right). Lucy Watts Seaford Volunteer Group – for cheerfully befriending and supporting members in the community during Lockdown (photo bottom left). Mary Hawes (photo bottom right) and Min Stone, ‘SeaFriends’ – Mary and Min have worked throughout the pandemic to connect isolated individuals with volunteers who offer support over the phone. Those nominating were moved by the difference they made to people suffering and feeling lonely during the pandemic.

4

At Christmas they delivered festive hampers to their clients to bring them some joy, as most were spending the festivities alone. Morrisons Manager and staff – The staff have been exemplary throughout the year with queues and numbers well managed, as well as staying open all hours for the community. Old School Surgery and Seaford Medical Centre – for the admirable way the Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, and administrative staff have adapted to working during the pandemic and continuing to provide exceptional healthcare to the community. Philippa Davis of the Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association – Phillipa and the team with ‘Sew Sussex’ in Seaford, co-ordinated people in their homes to manufacture PPE for distribution to the NHS and other healthcare staff. Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Rodney Reed, said: ‘There are so many people in our Seaford community who have gone “over and above” the call of duty or of neighbourliness, so I was delighted when so many nominations came in response to my request for local COVID-19 heroes. All of the people and organisations nominated have been awarded a COVID Hero Certificate. Our Seaford community spirit will continue to carry us through the difficult days that remain and ensure that our business and community life evolve into a post-COVID normal.’

Wilding my patch When I moved into my house in 1988 the garden was mostly lawn with a thin flower bed around the perimeter. In the last 20 years I have slowly added some trees and shrubs with the sole purpose of bringing wildlife in. A silver birch which I transplanted as a sapling is now some 9 metres tall, and is a haven for many insects. We regularly have a couple of bats who hunt around it on summer evenings. I have also introduced a crab apple, two cherry, and a hazel which I coppice into a sort of short hedge. One side of the garden forms a sort of woodland edge, which is ideal for many bird species. I have a log pile under a holly tree and have added soil over the top and brushwood. The pile is an insect’s heaven and also one of the two places my hedgehogs hide in during the day and for hibernation. I have

put up a total of eight nest boxes, most of which I made myself. It has been fascinating watching a pair of Great Tits bicker with a pair of Blue Tits over who is nesting in which box. Two years ago I made a very small pond out of a reservoir from a water feature. In the first year it had attracted pond snails (probably brought in on the plants I added), diving beetles, pond skaters and solitary dragonfly species (I found the discarded nymph casing on a reed stem). I added some frogspawn from a neighbour’s pond. The pond is visited by many birds to drink and bathe and I have witnessed the hedgehogs drinking and also, on one occasion, a very healthy looking dog fox. My latest project has been to let the lawn grow long. In summer it can look a little messy but the seed heads are actually quite attractive. It’s amazing how many wild flowers appear. Last summer I saw more butterflies than ever before and the first Small Tortoiseshell, as well as a Jersey Tiger Moth. I cut the grass down to about 3-4 inches in the autumn after the seeds had set. That leaves a good length for overwintering insects and thus makes good foraging for blackbirds, starlings etc. Last year I bought a colony of Buff-Tailed Bumble Bees, complete with a nesting box. From that initial colony I had three more through the season. One in the log pile, one in the compost bin and one under the shed. They particularly liked the catkins on the willow tree. To put it simply, let your garden go a little wild, you’ll find it much more interesting and more beneficial to local ecology. SEA – Seaford Environmental Alliance – is very grateful to Pete Tattam for sharing this fascinating account of life in his garden. If you would like to make over a patch of your garden for wildlife, go to: https://www.seafuture. org/a-metre-square-for-wildlife/ There is also a wealth of other useful information to help you live a more sustainable life in harmony with nature.

Martello Rotary Seaford

Here we are again. Spring is definitely in the air and the early lambs are appearing in the fields. Lockdown may have caused major disruption to many, but life goes on and there is an awful lot of activity just here in Seaford.

Local Green Spaces Survey

Last month I mentioned the forthcoming survey on Local Green Spaces. The idea behind this survey is to obtain feedback from local residents as to how they really wish the areas around them to be developed. We need people to be focused and involved in what is happening to their local green spaces and to help identify if these spaces need work or could be used for community-rooted projects and activities, and to help provide wildlife havens, ultimately reducing greenhouse gases and making our environment a nicer place to be. Fundamentally, we need to understand if residents wish to see the development of ‘green corridors’ that enable this, through the planting of trees, creation of meadows, community orchards etc. We also want to see if you would like to participate, and to be able to have the ability to engage in assisting the ‘Friends of ’ Groups, influencing the Seaford Community Partnership and having the ability to effect changes by commenting on, and working on, the actual projects. Initially we are working on the following areas. • Princess Drive open space/Grand Avenue bridleway • The Ridings, Lexden Road • Normansal Park Avenue/Chalvington Fields • Alfriston Road land east of Old Nursery Close • Foster Close open space So, if you live near one of these spaces or just want to participate please go to our survey site at: https://www.surveylegend.com/s/2znx. Results will be consolidated in April and published as quickly as possible.

Associates Rule, OK!

So, Martello Rotary is driving the development of a new group, Martello Associates. The objective of this group is to enable joint working on Environmental, Social and Sporting topics in a fun, unstructured, relaxed, and social manner. The Group is part of Martello Rotary, in that we will help to provide structure and direction, but members are NOT Rotarians and are not members of Rotary International. It is formed from a younger demographic and from people who currently have been working within the community during the pandemic. Some now find they have no natural ‘home’ to continue those chosen works, hence the creation of the Martello Associates group. To enable the group to attract younger members, the membership upper age will be capped at 50 years old. After then, members would join the Martello Rotary Club as full Rotarians. Associate Members will have the opportunity at any time to join Martello Rotary. Martello Associates will be associated with charitable fundraising activities and community service projects, which can be requests for assistance from the community, from Martello Rotary or projects initiated by the group itself. The Group is designed to offer members the chance to become involved in new events, make new friendships, gain new experiences; with the opportunity to make a difference to those around them. For those who already work or operate charities or community schemes, it is the opportunity to further interact with like-minded people, finding inter-related projects that can enhance all aspects of modern life. If you are interested, checkout the meetings and program by mailing membership@martellorotary.org.uk.

And finally

Now many of you out there will be thinking: Rotary, no good to me, only Bank Managers and Accountants join, smoke cigars and wear DJs, anyway you have to be drawing your pension, don’t you?

12

Wrong! We are all normal people who want to do service for the community that we live in and love. However, Rotary does rather have a certain image, and it is hard to attract younger members of the community who have not been involved in some form of community service activity, and may not know what it’s really like.

If you want to join us or just to find out more about us contact Martello Rotary on contact@martellorotary. org.uk or use our QR code to visit our web site.

Seaford Photographic Society February turned out to be a month of competitions, which are always the most popular of our meetings, and we had around 27 people attending each week via Zoom. The idea of competitive photography might seem a bit strange but it encourages all members, no matter what their level of skill, to show off their images and get them anonymously critiqued by visiting qualified judges. This is a valuable experience for everybody as we listen and learn from the comments, then go out and apply them to our own photography. For most people learning and improving is what club photography is all about, as well as the social aspect of course. The first meeting of the month was the annual Nature competition, judged by a regular visitor to the club, Zoe Garnham-Archer. Congratulations to Anna-Marie Armstrong who scooped both first and second places, with Colin Mitchell taking third. The 38 entries featured lions, rhinos, leopards, water buffalo and warthogs, but also lots of flora and fauna from around the Seaford area. To show that you don’t necessarily need expensive kit to take good photos we held a competition for mobile phones or tablets only. Charlie Verrall has been taking photos for over 70 years and he demonstrated that he hasn’t lost his touch with his winning image ‘Shadowlands’, taken on an iPhone. Colin Mitchell took second place and Anna-Marie Armstrong third. This was a light-hearted fun competition judged by our Print Secretary Adrian, who did a splendid job of commenting on and judging the 31 entries. He had obviously put in a lot of time looking through them before the meeting. This year’s Landscape competition was judged by Mike Warren ARPS from Steyning Camera Club. There were some very strong images and Mike commented that many of them would have been good enough to represent the club in regional competitions. Congratulations again to Anna-Marie for her 4th competition win of the season. Her image of Durdle

14

Door (photo right), with its fantastic lighting, was a well deserved winner, and showed how important the time of day is in landscape photography. In second place was Jack Taylor’s very creative photo of Crowlink (photo left). Peter Cavanagh took third place. The final meeting of the month was judged by our old friend Andy Smith LRPS CPAGB and featured two competitions, Architecture and Black & White. AnnaMarie Armstrong continued her winning streak with a Black and White image entitled ‘Footsteps’ (photo above). Kevin Smoker took second place and Chris Dawson third. Peter Cavanagh’s ‘Sunday in the City’ (photo left) took the win in the Architecture competition and the judge commented that it was a perfect example of what architecture photography is all about. Janice Hewitt’s colourful photo of the Towner

Art Gallery in Eastbourne (photo right) took second place, and ‘Changing Face of London’ by Adrian Bishop was third. Do keep an eye on our website www.seafordps.org, where you will find lots of details about what we do, plus larger versions of all the competition winning photos, members’ galleries, programme of events, latest news and contact details.

The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. Poetry to Light up Dark Days

Seaford poet, Peter Martin, dubbed by one newspaper as ‘Poet of the South Downs’, is lucky that Lockdown has not affected his writing. A former teacher and environmental educator with RSPB and WWF-UK, Peter lived for many years with his wife in the Surrey Hills ‘Area of Outstanding Beauty’ which inspired his first book Seasons Regained published in 2005. Since moving to Seaford in 2006 he has published four more books in the ‘Poetry of the Sussex Downs and Coast series, inspired by the beautiful landscapes, and the social and natural histories a short distance from home. Since his fourth volume was published in 2019, and during Lockdown he has written 18 new poems, some referring directly to the pandemic, but all showing how people can find solace and inspiration in the constancy of the natural world. One of these,

Quarantine, has been framed and displayed on the wall of Seaford Museum during Lockdown. All Peter’s books are beautifully illustrated by Sussex artists – Ghost Music by the late H.H Evans; Kindred Spaces by Sarah Gregson; Story Lines by Charlotte Matthews and Flight Feathers by Robert Greenhalf. Robert, based in Rye is one of the UK’s leading wildlife artists. Over the years, Peter has collaborated with various musicians, including the Seaford-based Corelli Ensemble who commissioned a new piece of music based on three of Peter’s poems. This was premiered as part of Seaford Head School’s project, Seaford in Harmony, and later at a memorial concert for Lord Denis Healey. He has also performed many times, often at Seaford’s Crypt Gallery, with Joy Lewis and Derrick Hughes, the talented Seaford-based players of a wide range of traditional instruments. In November 2019 Peter took part in a concert at Florence House to raise funds for the Seaford Youth Counselling Project. A packed house enjoyed performances by Dame Felicity Lott, the internationally renowned opera singer, and Maeve Jenkinson, Director of the Corelli Ensemble, interspersed with a selection of poems read by Peter. In 2019 the composer Nathan James asked Peter if he would read his poem The Long Man during the premier of his new cantata On Windover Hill. This took place in early 2020 in the magnificent Boxgrove Priory in West Sussex, with two choirs and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. ‘I am grateful to my wife for her critical first reading of my poems, editing the manuscript and also participating in poetry readings’, says Peter, also to my good friend Tom Cunliffe of Seaford who designed the last four books and who sadly passed away suddenly in 2020. He is very much missed’. Peter’s books can help to raise spirits during these challenging times – see the advert oposite for details of availability. What the Spring Budget Means for Home Movers in Seaford Last month the Chancellor Rishi Sunak outlined his plans to get England back on track as we come out of the pandemic. Among furlough extensions, extra support for the selfemployed and business loan schemes was the welcome news that the stamp duty holiday is being extended. When it was introduced, the original deadline was 31st March 2021. Here’s what the Chancellor announced and the impact it could have on the Seaford property market. Until 30th June 2021, no stamp duty will be charged on a residential property bought for up to £500,000. Until 30th September 2021, no stamp duty will be charged on a residential property bought for up to £250,000. From 1st October 2021, the stamp duty rate returns to pre-Covid-19 thresholds.

What it Means to Movers

For people with sales currently in our pipeline, it means they will not miss out on the savings the holiday is providing. This is potentially thousands of pounds and

Lenders are being offered incentives to provide mortgages to first-time buyers and existing homeowners, with just 5% deposits to buy homes worth up to £600,000. There was also good news for people planning to buy a home but struggling to save what is often a sizeable deposit. Sunak announced a Mortgage Guarantee scheme that means homebuyers will be able to access 95% mortgages, backed by the Government, from High Street banks and lenders.

Free Funding Opportunities for Local Businesses? The last 12 months have been the most difficult times for businesses across the country, and we are all desperately hoping for an upturn. One positive that has come about is that people now realise how important it is to shop locally and keep money in our area, stimulating the economy, helping local producers, and creating jobs for local people. If your business is in East Sussex, there are currently some excellent schemes to be aware of. These offer expert advice, grant funding, support for start-ups, as well as growth funding. Finding what’s available is sometimes difficult if you aren’t a member of a networking group or Chamber of Commerce. Even then, it’s not always straight forward, so here is a brief outline of what you can apply for: Business Growth Support provides up to 10 hours of free support and advice from practising business professionals. The programme is available for companies in the first few years of trading and businesses with larger ambitions eager to reach the next level. The South East Business Boost Programme is 1:1 business support with a team of specialists in Marketing, Sales, Crowdfunding, Product Development, Finance Management, HR and people issues, Leadership, Strategy, Exporting, PR, Design, Branding and Digital. Manufacturers have a specific growth programme that can be tailored to their SME business. Revenue grants are offered for project costs between £1K to £5K, where they can receive 30% of the cost. These are easy to apply for and delivered by Economic Growth Solutions. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. All rights are reserved over the content and design of Seaford Scene unless agreed otherwise. The opinions expressed in editorial matter are not necessarily those of the publisher. Every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of entries. Seaford Scene cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage caused by errors, omissions or alterations, and assumes no risk or liability for articles or adverts or the accuracy of the facts within them that are provided by contributors. Seaford Scene does not endorse companies, products, services or religious or political organisations that appear in this magazine.

South East Creatives is another development programme offering workshops and financial support (equipment included) to the creative sector, which includes businesses providing advertising and marketing, architects, crafts, fashion, film, TV, radio, IT, gaming, museums, galleries, music, performing arts, photography, publishing and visual arts. See www.southeastcreatives. co.uk; if you have a project costing between £3K and £6K, you could receive 35% of your costs. Mentoring and internships are also part of this programme. There is further support for freight, transport, logistics and manufacturing through www.tale.org.uk, which offers larger grants for the provision of software for tracking, warehouse management, stock control and cybersecurity. More details from author and specialist on the SEBB Programme, Julia Johnson, Director of Fine Marketing. julia@finemarketing.co.uk or 07572 422303.

3Attend to your lawn – scarify to remove

thatch and moss, and use a high nitrogen spring lawn fertiliser. If moss is a problem choose a combined fertiliser and moss killer. Apply lawn dressing (a fine sandy top soil) mixed with grass seed if lawn is sparse. 3 Tender bulbs including gladioli and nerine can now be planted out. Plant on coarse grit in heavy soil. 3 Sow annual ornamental grass seeds now. Flower and seed heads will be useful for arrangements. 3 Prune forsythia immediately after flowering. Members’ Notice

you have a winning formula. Covid-19 upset last year’s open gardens, and this year we must continue to follow government rules, but NGS is open for business, and I for one will be pre-booking some viewings. th on

Days are longer, the sun is warmer, and gardens everywhere are springing into growth to greet the lovely month of April. Gardeners will be busy this month prepping, planting and pruning, especially those who generously open their gardens to support the NGS – National Garden Scheme, and other local garden viewing initiatives. The NGS, dating back to 1927, has its roots in Victorian District Nursing. It’s an interesting history of an idea that grew and blossomed into today’s major funder, donating millions to nursing and health charities. Garden visiting is a joy on a sunny afternoon; wandering pretty paths with a friend, admiring blooms, collecting ideas for your own plot, and sometimes the opportunity to chat with the owners or buy plants raised in the garden. Add a little sit down with tea and home-made cake and

Ornamental Grasses

The grass isn’t necessarily greener, sometimes it’s yellow, or red, or even zebra striped. Ornamental grasses come in a myriad of varieties and colours, tall and short, annual and perennial, and most are low maintenance and easy to grow. No wonder they have grown in popularity in recent years and are widely available. There is an ornamental grass for nearly every garden situation; sun and shade, in borders, gravel gardens, containers, or as a specimen plant. I remember from my childhood the towering Cortaderia selloana (pampas grass) in my great aunt’s country garden, where it had pride of place in the lawn to show off its feathery white plumes. These plumes are apparently now much sought after for flower arranging and internal décor. If you are looking for some grassy impact in your garden Stipa gigantea (golden oats) will add height and airy movement to a sunny border. Or maybe try Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ (feather reed grass), a tall, erect grass providing a strong winter presence. Winter interest is in fact another good reason to feature grasses in your garden. Try Stipa tenuissima ‘Pony Tails’ (aka Mexican feather grass – see picture) a more compact grass with attractive feathery seed heads that last into the winter. With so much to choose from it’s worth a bit of research to find your ideal grass.

‘Can we announce to eagerly awaiting Seaford Scene readers that our magnificent garden at the Crouch is reopening later this month in all its spring glory?’ we ventured. ‘Noooooooo,’ said Katie, fingers and toes crossed inside her gardening gloves and boots. ‘Don’t let’s tempt fate!’ So, be assured that while we are obeying government rules we are only too anxious to resume normal Wednesday morning viewing and volunteer times just as soon as we can. Yes, we have had a couple of volunteers working one or two days a week at a safe social distance while our gates have been shut, and we feel awful when we have to tell people who catch sight of us over the wall that they can’t come in, but it’s really not long to go, and when you do get to enter you may spot some differences, established in the main by the tireless and very skilled Brian and Val. Ever conscious of the pleasure of just sitting in a delightful garden to enjoy its full sensory splendour, they have been busy rebuilding and providing new seating areas. For instance, Val has been showing off her considerable bricklaying skills to construct a semi-circular alcove in which a refurbished curved bench can be placed. Besides looking good,

the bricks will also hold back soil from the flower beds to maintain easy access along the path at the back of the poly tunnel. Meanwhile husband Brian has been putting his carpentry skills to good use by repairing raised beds and making racking on which to display plants for sale outside the front of the poly tunnel. He also has plans to make another bench outside the classroom to provide a further seating area. So much social pleasure has been missing from our community garden lives, an important part of the weekly effort being the tea and coffee break in the classroom where cake maker extraordinaire Steph’s fantastic cakes are greatly missed. Steph always bakes a beauty to celebrate volunteers’ birthdays so, looking forward in hope, we can anticipate a giant party to mark all those missed anniversaries. Better get baking, Steph! Back to work in our garden then and future plans include turning logs from pruned tree branches into seating for the children’s garden and a step for viewing the wildlife pond safely. Also in this area, a natural ‘sculpture’ from part of a fallen tree in the Crouch is at the time of writing so charmingly surrounded by spring flowers that no one would be surprised to see a fairy or two making merry there.

DANARTHUR

So, bring on the magic and – abracadabra – we can look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Hidden spaces of Seaford Seaford has many hidden green spaces, many of which are known only to their closest neighbours. One of these is Micklefield Green When houses were built on the site of Micklefield School, 15 years ago, the field with the running track was left as a green space with a twitten beside it. It is now a well used area – for dog walkers, people chatting on the seat (which catches the last rays of evening sun), and groups of young people relaxing and sometimes kicking a ball about. It is mostly open grass but along the path are trees which, on closer examination, turn out to include some unusual specimens. Surprisingly, there are in fact 47 trees. Unfortunately, a silver birch was broken off when it was a small sapling and it did not show any signs of sprouting shoots last year. The area is fenced on three sides but there are hedges – mostly beech – on the long side. A pair of robins and a pair of blackbirds are residents in a corner of the hedge, in privet which provides cover for them all year round. At the moment one notices the differing shapes of the trees’ silhouettes against the grey skies. Some retain fruit and seeds – the alder has little cones and the rare Paulownia has some candelabra groups of its seed pods. There are two Austrian pines – one of which is showing signs of the effects of our relentless

salty winds. A eucalyptus has blue-green leaves which are attractive as they blow about. It has stubbornly managed to develop a thick, attractively peeling, trunk despite being bent over because of the prevailing wind. I had been cheered by the early appearance of catkins in early January but the chilly weather has stalled further signs of Spring. The Council manages the area and came recently to prune the hardy shrubs in the beds nearest the houses. Last year some swathes of long grass were left under trees where a collection of wild flowers bloomed and attracted butterflies. As we move into Spring, the trees will provide a procession of dramatic changes – several of them usually blossom in succession and their different leaf shapes will emerge. It will be interesting to see whether there is a more extensive range of wild flowers if, again, some grass remains uncut until late summer. East Sussex Social Friends Meet Up’s The past 12 months have had a serious emotional impact on a lot of people, the combination of much anxiety, loss of control of the external environment, a reduction in social interaction and physical activity, everyone is feeling the same. We can however, all find a way to take back control of our life, by joining the group East Sussex Social Friends Meet Up’s which was founded by Caroline Smith on Facebook just after the first lockdown. The group offers an online quiz, Zoom sessions, interaction with photos of cooking, seascapes, countryside and artwork. The group has more than 950 members as it helps people to contact others and make people feel less isolated in their lives. When Lockdown is over Caroline has plans to hold events to bring members together for beach meet-ups,

themed dinners, charity coffee mornings etc, similar to the events she organised in between the lockdowns. Caroline has recently been nominated for Community Hero in a local newspaper by some of the members because of the difference she has made to other people’s lives during difficult times. Why not join East Sussex Social Friend’s Meet Up’s to meet new people, and make new friends with likeminded interests.Visit the Facbook page: East Sussex Social Friends Meet Up’s Photo: Caroline left with ESSFMU member, Lorraine in the Peace Garden, Seaford.

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup Spring is springing and what a beautiful time of year it is. Daffs are doffing their pretty yellow hats at all the new life and vitality bursting all around us, a joyful celebration that winter is behind us and that much like us, emerging from our Lockdown hibernation as we are, there is so much to be grateful for. It is a splendid spring indeed and we encourage you, our exceptionally great neighbours, to kick up your heels and be joyful. Hopefully, the worst is behind us. How wonderful it would be to show our own spring with bunting and banners, the Christmas lights that barely got a look in, with flowers and gardens resplendent and with smiles and good cheer. Let’s keep all the good of this past year; the community spirit, the neighbourliness, the kindness and consideration, the support of local businesses, the generosity for those battling far more than they should be, the sprit of willing helpfulness, our Seafordian-ness, and let this be the lasting good out of what has undoubtedly been, a terrible year. As if battling through a pandemic were not enough, the scammers have had a field day with mobile phones and land lines under siege of electronic threats. From threats of the National Crime Agency cancelling our National Insurance numbers and issuing warrants for arrest to HMRC debt collectors coming to our homes, and folk based in far flung lands with the powers of x-ray vision able to see our routers, we have heard them all. Keep doing what you are doing and hang up, block the number, and report the call to ActionFraud. https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ We haven’t had many reports of doorstep fraud but we are aware that neighbours have had a flood of post and email fraud attempts which are so clever that they look real, and some really rather alarming. Again, keep

44

doing what you are doing – report the attempted fraud to ActionFraud. https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ We encourage all neighbours to take the online course offered by Friends Against Scams, the antifraud division of Trading Standards. If you visit their website https://www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk/ you can learn everything there is to learn to be totally scam-savvy and how to protect friends and family too. The online courses are free and a real eye opener – you honestly will not believe how many people get caught out and the devastation that scam fraud causes. The only way to combat it, is to be scam-proof, and the only way to be scam-proof is to know what you are up against and share that knowledge. With a social summer fast approaching, now is the time to check sheds, garages and outbuildings, and make sure they are secure. Sussex Police have great advice on their website for keeping your home, property and valuables secure, as listed below. Many people don’t secure their shed or garage in the same way they do their homes – often using an easy-to-break lock or padlock to protect valuable contents such as a car, bike or lawnmower. An opportunistic burglar will try a shed or garage first because they can find the tools they need to break into the main house.

Insure It:

First off, check that your insurance covers the contents of your shed or outbuildings from theft.

Think Like a Thief:

Take a look at your shed and consider how you would break in. It’s worth having a good padlock on the door with no exposed screws. Pay attention to hinges, as these are sometimes easily removable. If you have windows, then these could be vulnerable unless they’re secured with wire mesh or grills. And keep it locked at all times.

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

Alarm It:

Consider a battery-operated shed alarm. They look low key, but they respond to movement or door contact with an extremely loud siren.

Lock It, Hide It or Mark It:

Don’t give them the opportunity or the tools to commit a crime. Lock everything away securely. Tools can be locked inside a locker or box or secured with a chain. Secure your bike to the ground or a lockable stand within a locked shed or garage. Visit Sold Secure to search for ground anchors and other locks designed to fix to floors and walls. It’s always worth draping an old sheet or blanket over the top of mowers or bikes to keep them covered from view. Although it might sound like stating the obvious, never leave your garage or shed door unlocked if you’re not around. Property marking your items is advisable and some tools can be painted with your name or postcode. Forensic marking is also an option. https://www.sussex.police.uk/cp/crimeprevention With spring springing, it is also time for us to renew – we haven’t pushed it through 2020 but your £3 per household per year (and just £2 per senior household per year) keeps us ticking along. We rely on you, our neighbours, to keep us doing what we do, and what we do, we do very well. 2020 may have seemed like a dormant year for many, but we seeded two new schemes in Newhaven, now fully on their own two feet.

A visible Neighbourhood Watch is a proven deterrent to crime and our exceptionally low crime figures in Seaford are a testament to our effort and our success. So please carry on being the eyes and ears in our town – due in large part to our very savvy Seafordians, crime remains low but we are no less vulnerable than the next guy. Keeping up with the latest info, and then sharing that with family, friends and neighbours, increases our resilience to scammers and makes us rather an unattractive target. The easiest way to join or renew is online at www. sandbnhw.org/join but if you fancy joining or renewing the old fashioned way, there is a handy tear off slip below. There is also a new online shop for Neighbourhood Watch decals and stickers so if you need a refreshed members pack, please just order – all it will cost you is the postage. We are looking forward to a far more connected 2021 as we all blossom back to normality – we have an Expo planned for late Summer, and we hope to see you at the fairs and shows that can go ahead this year in our town. Our thanks as always to our neighbours for your loyal support. Carry on being generous with your smiles, your care for yourselves and each other, and above all, be safe.

Ashley Stephenson LVO FCIH 1st September 1927 – 3rd February 2021 Ashley left school at fourteen and joined Newcastle Corporation Parks Department, serving a three-year apprenticeship before being called up for National Service. On leaving the army he returned to gardening, and was in private service in Gosforth, before moving to a landscape gardening firm near Ponteland in Northumberland. His horticultural journey had now begun, encouraging him to attain a student position at the RHS gardens at Wisley, where he obtained his Wisley Diploma. In 1954 and now armed with a professional qualification he applied to join the Royal Parks. He was offered the post of Gardener Grade 2 working in Hyde Park nursery, propagating pelargoniums. Continuing to work his way through the ranks, Ashley eventually became Superintendent Grade 1 for the Central Royal Parks, which included responsibility for the gardens of Buckingham Palace. It was in 1980, when Ashley was appointed to the Royal Parks premier role of Bailiff, that Ashley and his family moved into Rangers Lodge in Hyde Park, the official residence that went with the job. Traditionally, one of the roles of Bailiff was to be the Queen’s representative for the Royal Parks and it was with fondness that Ashley remembered his royal duties. When Ashley retired in 1990 he and his wife Isabel moved permanently to Seaford, having purchased a property a few years earlier. As well as his career in the Royal Parks, Ashley was very active in the world of horticulture generally, both through his work with the ‘In Bloom’ movement and the Royal Horticultural Society. He was also a writer, at one time being gardening correspondent for the Times and the London Evening News. After judging ‘London in Bloom’ for many years he became Vice Chairman in 1984, later to become Chairman of South & South East In Bloom and a judge for Britain In Bloom, continuing his involvement well into retirement.

50

Ashley’s wife Isabel shared his passion for horticulture, establishing and chairing the Seaford in Bloom committee for over twenty years, raising thousands of pounds each year through fund-raising activities that provided floral planters and hanging baskets throughout Seaford town centre. Ashley regularly attended the ‘Open Gardens’ events as a judge, giving advice and guidance to all the keen gardeners present. On retirement Ashley was a popular speaker on the cruise ship circuit, and this became a large part of Ashley and Isabel’s life in their later years. Sadly, Isabel passed away in March 2020. Alan Titchmarsh, friend of Ashley and Patron of the Royal Parks Guild, said ‘I am so sorry to hear of Ashley’s passing who I knew well. I have so many happy memories of cruises and talks and special times.’ Ashley had a long and illustrious career, and was part of that post-war golden horticultural generation, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Ashley was an active member of Seaford Rotary Club for many years and a popular member of Seaford Golf Club. He was devoted to his family of two children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Photos from top: Ashely filming in the USA; Ashleys wife Isabel was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Seaford through Seaford in Bloom; Ashley in his garden.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Cycle Seahaven Spring is well and truly on its way, it’s time to open your shed and dust off that bike that has been sitting in there over winter, as your local cycling club Cycle Seahaven would love to welcome new members to our fantastic community. We are an inclusive club with riders of all abilities and ages, we have mountain bikers, tourers and our great ladies’ rides as well as fast road riders and people that love to shred the trails in Friston forest. Why not visit our website www.cycleseahaven.org.uk and join us? As England moves into Step 1 of the easing of Covid restrictions, it is anticipated that from the 29th March 2021 Group rides can restart. All Cycle Seahaven rides will initially be subject to the rule of six, we are waiting on guidance from our insurers (Cycling UK) to clarify exactly what is allowed, but the committee anticipates that a Rule of Six group will be permitted. It should

be noted that two household groups may ride together from the 29th March 2021 even if the numbers exceed six. We are also delighted to announce that our Dr Bike team will be up and running again from 17th April, kicking off at the Big Park in Peacehaven (Centenary Park), so bring along your bike and our mechanics will give it a once over and get you riding safely again. We are very fortunate that we live in this part of the country, with its great trails and with the Southdowns National park right on our doorstep, you can hop onto the Southdowns Way and ride safely for miles. Or how about a nice ride from Splash point along Seaford seafront to the buckle and then onto the Ouse estuary trail to Newhaven and back, a nice flat route of about 7 miles. The choice is yours. Remember to wear a helmet when riding. You only have one head – and always be aware of other road users. If you are out over the hills keep an eye out for walkers and horse riders – a polite ding on your bell is always welcomed by them. Cycling is a great family pastime and as a club we offer family rides which are at the pace of the youngest riders and great fun, often in and around Friston forest, so mainly traffic free. As the lighter evenings are approaching, night rides become more popular and there is nothing better than riding over the hills and watching the sun go down. With the popularity of electric bikes more people are able to get out on two wheels. We have a lot of E-Bike riders in the club, and also have a couple for you to try out, which is a great way to get back in to cycling or if you just want to see what one is like, we are more than happy for you to try them. There is a great social side to the club and we often put on rides in the early evening, as well as other events like barbecues and the occasional party (restrictions permitting). We hope to see you soon and welcome you and your family to our club. Happy cycling! Member of Cycle Seahaven

‘There is still lots more work to be done to ensure that every young person gets the support they need for their mental health. But this [the £79m Government boost] is a positive step forward in cementing mental health at the heart of recovery from the pandemic and beyond.’

Seaford-based The Youth Counselling Project is delighted to report that it has received a £3,000 grant from The Edward Gostling Foundation. The Foundation provides grants to other charities that support people of all ages living on low incomes who have a physical and/or mental disability or long-term illness. The grant will pay for 10 sessions for each of six local students in need of counselling by one of the appropriately trained therapists that The Youth Counselling Project funds. This welcome news came at the same time as the Government’s announcement that it is to allocate £79m to boost health support for children and young people, with the number of mental health support teams in schools and colleges set to grow nationally from 59 to 400 by April 2023. However, that is up to two years away and in the meantime at local level the Project has to raise funds for its commitment this year to help 80 students attending Seaford Head and three primary schools. There is evidence that prompt treatment for mental health issues connected with depression, anxiety and self-harming can effect a cure. New NHS research suggests that one in six youngsters may now have a mental health problem, up from one in nine in 2017. This latter figure seemed shockingly high four years ago and resulted in the foundation of The Youth Counselling Project. Paul Farmer, Chief Executive of Mind, was quoted on a government website as saying: ‘We know that high levels of poor mental health and problems accessing mental health services were a problem for many children and young people even before the pandemic, and that coronavirus has disproportionately affected younger people. Over the past year our young people have faced a whole load of additional challenges, including school closures, loneliness and isolation, and the knock-on effect of the recession causing problems for families such as debt, unemployment, housing and access to benefits.

NHS Mental Health Director Claire Murdoch said: ‘The pandemic has turned our lives upside down and hit children and young people particularly hard.’ Children’s Minister Vicky Ford said: ‘For many young people this pandemic has amplified the feeling of lack of control which can have such a large impact on their mental health and wellbeing.’ Supporting The Youth Counselling Project means you will be assisting growing numbers of depressed, anxious and possibly self-harming young people to be helped quickly back to happier lives. While the Project searches for grants to cover the big sums needed, it also needs continuous local support, not only for the money but for proof of public awareness. Seaford Rotary

Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs

Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs are planned to be held on the Martello Field West on the following Sundays in 2021: 18th April, 2nd May, 6th June, 4th July, 1st August, 29th August, 19th September. The fairs will be held assuming that Government pandemic restrictions are lifted in accordance with the Roadmap announced by the Prime Minister on 22nd February 2021. The fairs may be subject to the operational restrictions in place for the fairs last year.

Presidential Changes

Each December, Seaford Rotary holds a meeting at which the existing President Elect (Vice President) and President Nominee (2nd Vice President) are confirmed as President and President Elect respectively for the forthcoming Rotary year from July and nominations for the next President Nominee are considered. Last December, however, a spanner was thrown in the succession plans, as Keith Blackburn, the then President Elect advised the President that his work on the Community Partnership projects had reached such a level, that he felt he could not continue with the post of President Elect. As he would have taken on the Presidency in July 2021, he decided to step down, so that another member could have time to prepare for the role. Before advising the President however, he spoke to President Nominee Mike Ogilvie, who, without too much arm twisting, agreed to take on the mantle of President Elect. From July 2021, 2nd Vice President Mike will therefore become President rather than in 2022.

62

This rearrangement also impacted upon the President Nominee position, and again, a member has thrown caution to the wind. Ann Reed, who was nominated to be President Nominee from July, agreed to take up that position immediately, so from July 2021 she will become President Elect, and in July 2022 the first female President of Seaford Rotary. The nominees for these positions were confirmed a few days later at the meeting, but the domino effect resulted in a vacancy for the President Nominee position from July 2021. Members were therefore asked to nominate their preferred choice (with their agreement!). A nomination for the President Nominee position from July 2021 was approved at the January Council meeting before the nomination was included on the agenda of the February Business meeting. At this meeting Seaford Rotary agreed that Mark Forrester should be the President Nominee from July 2021, and thus he should become President in July 2023.

Over the Rainbow Walk: 20th June 2020 Due to the national lockdown, it was not possible to hold the Over the Rainbow Fancy Dress walk as planned on 21st March. The new date will be Sunday 20th June 2021 (not 13th June as previously announced). Teams of would-be walkers should secure their entries by registering before the deadline of 17th May. The number of teams taking part will be strictly limited. Sponsorship for your charity may begin as soon as you register. To maximise fundraising opportunities, early registration is recommended. Seaford Rotary wishes to see colourfully dressed charity groups and family teams of up to six walking from Splash Point to Seaford Sailing Club and back. Individual walkers, pairs, and groups less than six can also join this fun-themed event. Each group of walkers

will start at defined times at 5 minute intervals during the afternoon. Government regulations permitting, it will be full steam ahead for the Over the Rainbow Walk on, hopefully, a glorious day. For full walk details and a registration form please contact Rotarian Jean Cash by email: jeannecash@gmail. com.

Jaago Foundation Tel-Ed Programme

Seaford Rotary has agreed to continue contributing towards the salary of a Jaago Foundation teacher, Mehenaj Hossain, a graduate from a university in Dhaka, who has been teaching at the Jaago Foundation Rayer Bazar school, Dhaka since 2016. Seaford Rotary has sponsored her salary for more than two years. Jaago Foundation is a not-for-project organisation in Bangladesh begun in 2007 to create change for impoverished children in Bangladesh and to break the cycle of poverty through education. Now, 13 years later, Jaago has 3,500 registered students aged between 4 – 15 years based in 13 sites throughout Bangladesh. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in Bangladesh were closed in May 2020 and in July 2020, Jaago devised an innovative approach to continue to provide education to those children who were unable to attend school. A Tel-Ed initiative was created by conducting classes over the phone and using short messaging services. The programme has engaged both students and their parents with the teachers and staff, and many positive responses have been received from students and parents. Teachers found that initially parents had some reservations and were doubtful about the process of Tel-Ed. Now, however, they are extremely satisfied and most of the guardians/parents acknowledge that Tel-Ed is helping to continue their children’s education. Although parents in the towns generally have limited technical ability with little or no formal education, they have expressed their gratitude and appreciation to Jaago after seeing their children interact with the teacher and their child during this period of COVID-19. Jaago began the Tel-Ed program to keep the students engaged, to maintain each student’s link with formal schooling, and to reduce the rate of student dropouts.

Accordingly, once normality is restored, post-COVID, students returning to the classroom should not be overburdened with having to familiarise themselves with the curriculum and the learning process again. In addition to the Tel-Ed programme, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the under privileged in Bangladesh the worst. Jaago has therefore distributed food and essential items since the lockdown was imposed to the worst affected families. Many lowermiddle-class families in Bangladesh have lost jobs and are struggling to ‘put food on the table,’ and so the food package campaign, which was initiated in the capital Dhaka, is being delivered in most districts of the country. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members. For more information contact us on http://www. seafordrotary.org.uk/contact.php. Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club In the 1930s, Seaford Stamp and Post Card member Tony Hope, often accompanied his father when he went to work on the SouthWestern Railways. Since then, he has had an on-going interest in all aspects of our old-time railways, including our local Southern Rail.

Oh for the Days of Yore! The Brighton and South Coast Railway L.B. and S.C.R. (image right) was formed in 1846 from the London and Croydon and London and Brighton Railways.

The Lewes – Newhaven – Seaford line opened in 1864 and the postcard from 1908 (image below) shows the Newhaven Continental Key with the Seaford Branch Line on the left.

the seaside from London Victoria. The fare was only 3/6d (now 18p)! Introduced in 1908, the all Pullman ‘Southern Belle’ (image above) ran from Victoria to Brighton. In 1923 the L.B. and S.C.R. became part of Southern Railway and the line was electrified in 1933. The train was then renamed the ‘Brighton Belle’ (image right) and was renowned for the very high standard of its cuisine and service, a far cry from the coffee in a plastic cup served today. We are hoping to re-open as a face-to-face club soon. Until then if you would like to find out more about the club, visit our website at Seaford Stamp and Postcard Club : http://www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sspc/ or email our club secretary: davidmanthorpe10@gmail.com.

Young Runners Raise £1,680 to Help Local Homeless People

A group of young runners from Seaford have used their lockdown exercise time wisely by running more than 500 miles and raising £1,680 for a homeless charity. The athletes aged between 6-16 from Seaford Striders running club took up a three-week running challenge to do at least seven miles each week, which was completed on Sunday 14th February.

Through sponsorship, they raised the huge amount for Surviving the Streets, a charity which supports homeless and vulnerable people across our region. The children ran 559 miles which has bucked a national trend that has seen physical activity plummet among young people during the third lockdown. The challenge’s organiser Wendy Reed said: “We’re so proud of the young runners who braved all weathers

to get out and clock up their mileage. Thanks to the parents who provided so much support and helped us raise a fantastic figure. Our initial target was £300, so thanks to people’s generosity we surpassed that by some distance. ‘The club has given us fantastic support throughout the challenge including a £190 donation to help us hit the £1,680 mark.’ James Robinson from Surviving the Streets said: ‘We are so grateful for the efforts of the children and the generosity of the people who have donated. The money will go towards buying breakfast packs for the homeless people we serve, as well as paying for the fuel to get our delivery vans out to those who need help during these tough times.’ The team of runners were: Lily, Annalise, Olly, Pip, Luther, Kearna, Hettie, Charlotte, Olivia, Jess, Grace, Zachary, Oscar M, Joey, Nancy, Ewan, Daisy, Finn, Oscar B, Lucy.

get involved. This means less landfill, more space and happy, healthy cyclists. Families may have a shed full of rusting bikes and want to get out on family rides. We can repair those bikes and teach anyone over 16 how to maintain them in a roadworthy condition. Those wanting to start a career in bike repair or renovation can learn all the relevant skills, and work with our partners to gain vital experience and move on to jobs with our contacts in this sector. We can help out with free equipment to get people started, and for those eligible, a free bike. We particularly want to reach female participants to start women’s groups at the workshop and develop a safe space policy. Seaford Town Council holdS Virtual Town Forum

Seaford Town Council is preparing for the Town Forum which will include presentations from the 2020-21 large grant awardees and presentation of the prestigious Civic Awards On Tuesday 20th April 2021, the Town Council will facilitate the Annual Town Meeting (also known as the Town Forum). This is a public meeting, not a Council meeting, that gives members of the public the chance to ask questions and receive updates on the Town Council activities over the previous year. Due to the restrictions in place and in support of the Government’s Covid-19 guidance, the Seaford Town Forum will be held virtually this year. The live virtual Town Forum will start at 7pm on Tuesday 20th April, hosted via Zoom by the Mayor of Seaford and the Town Clerk for any members of the public who wish to attend. Further details of the live Town Forum will be issued shortly.

the Young Mayor’s presentations of the annual Mayor’s Awards, which are given to members of the community or organisations that have worked hard for the benefit of the town or have overcome great barriers. The prestigious Don Mabey Award is also presented; an award first bestowed in 2014 in memory of the late Don Mabey MBE and his services for Seaford. The Don Mabey Award is given to selected residents of the Seaford community for outstanding services to the town. Nominations for Mayor’s and Young Mayor’s Awards are still open for consideration. If you would like to nominate someone, please email their details and reason for the nomination to mayors.secretary@seafordtowncouncil. gov.uk by 31st March. Further details regarding registering to attend the virtual Town Forum will be available nearer the time. Anyone is welcome to participate. In the meantime, please keep the date in your diary!

The event usually includes presentations from charities and organisations that have received financial grants from the Town Council; giving an insight into how the money has been spent and the benefit this has brought to the town. Due to the need to hold this meeting virtually, rather than the presentations being live, these presentations will instead be collated as a video and available on the Town Council YouTube channel and website on Tuesday 20th April. The video will also include the Mayor of Seaford’s and

A Good Read Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Ah, the Regency Era. The world of Jane Austen, elegant women dressed in the sumptuous fashions of the era, and dashing young men, all navigating a world of parties and courtship. Julia Quinn drops us into this intriguing world in her bestselling novel The Duke & I, the first in the Bridgerton series. Most people will know it through its highly successful adaptation on Netflix, but the original source material is well worth reading. We are introduced to the Bridgerton family with their eight children (all named alphabetically). Mrs Bridgerton is eager to find a husband for her eldest daughter, Daphne, and it would appear that all of Fitt Minimed in a day al disr uption ry

The

British high society – known as the ton – is lapping up the latest gossip. At one of many balls she attends, Daphne meets the rather irascible Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings. The two form an unlikely friendship and, since neither of them is interested in marriage, they agree to a fake courtship, in the hope of avoiding advances from prospective husbands and wives. But can it really work? And are they really so averse to marriage? One of the charms of this novel is that you are reminded that no matter what era we are born into, we are all basically navigating the same pitfalls in life. Enjoy the ride!

The Big Ugly Monster and the Little Stone Rabbit

by Chris Wormell Sometimes we all feel lonely. Sometimes all we want is a friend. The Big Ugly Monster is no different.

This wonderful picture book tells the story of a monster who is so ugly that no one will go near him. Lakes, rivers, and puddles hiss and dry up when he steps in them. Animals and birds run away from him. Flowers drop their petals and trees lose their leaves. But one day he decides to make his own friend out of stone, and he carves a little stone rabbit. We learn that he is only ugly on the outside and that he is a faithful, loving friend. A moving story that will stay with you long after the final page. Willow Coby

seaford afternoon flower club Throughout these challenging months we have endeavoured to hold the interest of our members by setting a competition each month. In view of the difficulties involved for some of our members in purchasing flowers, our chairman has been careful to select titles which can be interpreted using minimal mechanics and plant material that could be obtained from our gardens or even hedgerows for those who try to have a daily walk. With this in mind, February Rychlinski Flyer:Layout 8 3/11/14 10:59 our Page 1 competition was entitled ‘Twigs and Sprigs’ and offered a suitable challenge to our members. Splash Point Jazz Show

How it all started: Pianist/singer/ presenter Neal Richardson’s ‘Splash Point Jazz Show’ Weekly Livestream Gig, handmade in Seaford! Up to March 2020 I had been running six regular jazz clubs around Sussex, with occasional excursions up to London (Ronnie Scott’s) and abroad (France, Germany, Holland…), but the pandemic put paid to that. The day before the first Lockdown announcement I was on local TV in blissful ignorance being interviewed about the Splash Point Jazz Clubs and my life as a musician… then Lockdown hit! In the space of two hours I lost over 200 gigs as all the venues closed… so I had to think about what I would do. I got very down for a few days but then thought: ‘I’m lucky – I have access to a studio, I’ll start doing livestreamed gigs from there’. I was dithering about when to start, then BBC South TV asked me to talk about how I and other local businesses were coping a week later, so I thought ‘Now’s the time!’. The first one was 24th March 2020, and other than a summer break it’s been weekly ever since! (and now on Thursdays).

Member

My heroes are people like Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole, Ella, Frank, Chet etc so the music is very accessible to everyone.

I’d love more local people to join in as well as the far-flung ones in other countries, so I’m delighted to be included in the wonderful Seaford Scene!

Gentle traditional Yoga suitable for all

We will be back soon!! ‘Yoga in the garden’ for groups of 5 (if the weather lets us) from April, and more traditional classes from mid-May. If you’d like to join a class or offer your garden for a group, please contact me. Looking forward to sunshine and normality... Rosie Waters: Tel/Text: 01323 892638 / 07983 622840

The new Lockdown we’re in now is stricter, so I’ve returned to it being just me (and three cameras), with my wife the trumpeter/singer Sue Richardson joining for a few numbers each show – but actually the audience numbers have continued to climb.

They have been very kind in supporting the show through voluntary donations too, which seems to be the way paying for entertainment is heading.

Yoga

I’ve been a pro musician for over 25 years, so I know a lot of the best jazz musicians in the UK and beyond, and many have guested on the show already, with more to come.

I try to make it fun – there is a lot of banter between me and the audience, which is only possible because of the Chat ability on YouTube and Facebook, and the interaction is key I think. We’re building a nice feeling of a little community, with people ‘chatting’ between them too, as well as me doing the odd CD giveaway, requests, beat the intro etc. People even say it’s the highlight of their week – thanks, Lockdown!

It’s gone from being just me and an iPhone in mono, to five-piece Band (socially distanced in the studio), six cameras and studio-quality sound (I’ve produced over 20 albums for people so I got it right eventually!). Vajrasati

Having said that, the tech side of it has been a nightmare -– it’s very resource-hungry and involves three computers, so it still gives me the occasional heart failure!

My Back pages

I love old natural history books. It’s not just the information they contain. I love the smell, I love the binding. For the past twelve months I’ve avoided Covid anxieties by burying my head in old books, scientific papers and travellers’ journals. I’ve been researching a book of my own, an account of my travels in search of what remains of the world’s iconic extinct animals. A journey which took me from the dark forests of New Zealand to the ferries of Finland, and finally to an inflatable crocodile floating on Widewater Lagoon in Shoreham. After spending long lockdown nights writing at my computer, it was somewhat surreal to receive an advance copy of my book in the post this morning and to run my hands over its embossed cover. I finally filed it on my bookcase where it rubbed shoulders, and spines, with On The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin and Animal Magic by Johnny Morris.

My bookshelves sag with old natural history books. Just holding these tomes transports me to another time. Tucked away inside my battered (but beloved) copy of The Butterflies of Eastbourne (1928) by Robert Adkin is a map, which I always unfold eagerly as if I’ve discovered the concealed directions to some long-lost buried treasure. Indeed, in the book Adkin describes bounteous butterfly riches which could be found in the woodlands and downland coombes between Lewes and Eastbourne. You can almost hear Rudyard Kipling whisper of ‘something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!’ At the time, many young explorers answered the call and Adkin claimed that ‘almost daily during the summer, one meets small armies of schoolboys each armed with a butterfly net.’ Perhaps Adkin’s eager Eastbourne entomologist army had been inspired by another of my favourite books. The Outdoor World (1900) by William Furneaux aimed to distract children from ‘victimising their schoolmates’ and give them ‘a taste for something better.’ Back in 1900, it seems pinning butterflies and collecting birds’ eggs fell into the ‘something better’ category. Furneaux encouraged young naturalists to make ‘killing bottles’ in which they could dispatch butterflies, and instructed children to ask the local chemist for some cyanide. The chemist will, Furneaux assures you, sell you cyanide if ‘he is satisfied with your intentions.’ Although it all sounds rather macabre now, this popular book went on to inspire a generation of young naturalists (and probably one or two aspiring Dr Crippens). Back on my bookshelf, I look at my book and wonder if – in 100 years from now – my own story will seem as distant and ridiculous as a world where schoolboys wielded butterfly nets and 10-year-olds could pop to the chemist to buy deadly poison. One of the more positive aspects of the pandemic is that it has meant we have all paid more attention to our local community and what we have around us. This may have been using the local shop rather than driving to the supermarket, ordering from a local farm shop, having a takeaway coffee from a local café or just walking around our town with a different set of eyes. As the vaccine rolls out, we will gradually get back to some form of normality, but must not forget our recent experiences, and build back together and support our local organisations and shops etc.

‘We have all been missing this lately and believe that now is to the time to get back in to the community as well as think about learning a new skill and to give it a go’.

Even if you don’t take up this offer, the club asks you to support all organisations who have helped them out through Lockdown and those enterprises who have had to remain closed through no fault of their own.

We have been speaking to members of one of Seaford’s oldest sports clubs (Seaford Bowling Club) that dates from 1912, who are hoping to do just that. ‘Bowls is very much a community sport’, a spokesperson said, ‘as it can be played by all ages and abilities with no physical barriers. It is a strategy game and a target sport, as well as providing mental stimulation, a sense of achievement and a chance to destress and be sociable.

The club can’t promise to make you a world champion but you will be assured of a warm welcome and some fun. Please call June on 01323 398320 or Bruce on 01323 899845 to obtain more details.

Seaford Bowling Club

Anyone who saw the recent world championships on TV saw competitors as young as 19 years old taking part, and other clubs in Sussex have several younger members. The club now wants to invite interested parties of all ages to see for themselves and is offering a number of free of open days to try it out. Although it is primarily a lawn bowling club, it is open all year with winter activities, including short mat bowls and social events.

The Tide Mills Project

Love Your Landscape

Historically, the landscape of the Tide Mills area, now in an area of special scientific interest and in the care of the South Downs National Park, has been at the forefront of ecological activity: the great Mill used wave power, one of the first sustainable sources of energy. During this lockdown, preparations for the Tide Mills Celebratory Week have been proceeding apace! The whole community is involved, from primary school pupils to retirees. Two of the projects are Ghost Net Weaving and the creation of an allotment. Kittie Kipper is a fibre artist who uses foraged plastic materials, primarily ghost nets. She is running the Ghost Net Weaving project, encouraging makers of all ages to work with materials that have been discarded as waste. Thrown overboard by fishermen, ghost nets are fishing nets which rise with the heat from the sun and drop deeper into the ocean when it is cold, catching a range of marine life, unable to free themselves. Clearing these nets from the sea is vital. This project is an opportunity to make an impressive, large-scale collaborative installation that also has a positive impact on the marine environment, as ghost nets frequently wash up on the beach at Tide Mills. Kittie Kipper had put together special individual kits, each with a strand of discarded netting and other

materials, and online tutorial videos for school children and community members, enabling participants to weave attractively patterned circles: tidemills.app/ ghostnets. These individual circles will be woven together, on-site during the Tide Mills Project Celebratory Week, when participants can explain to visitors the purpose behind this installation. Over 400 school children and a large number of individuals from the community are already working on their circles. Another installation focusing on environmental issues is the creation of an allotment including many vegetables that were eaten by Tide Mills villagers years ago. This project is being facilitated by four local charities. Priory Community Garden, Seaford Community Garden and the Seaford Environmental Alliance are advising on the vegetables to be grown and when the seeds should be planted. Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) is providing young people, who work on external projects, to dig the plot and tend the plants. During the Celebratory Week, they will be on hand to talk about this project and the food the villagers ate in the past. CRYPT GALLERY NEWS Unfortunately we are still closed in April, but in the following months we have some great exhibitions to look forward to. These include past exhibitors like Newhaven Art Club and Katy Oxborrow returning but also we welcome Lindy Dunbar and Joseph Davey who will be exhibiting later in the year. We also really excited about working with the Tide Mills Project and FilmSpot in the coming months and will keep you updated. See tidemillsproject.uk and www.filmspot.org.uk for more information. We are still fundraising for our windows, and donations can be made through BACS or cheques put in our post box.

Lewes District Citizens Advice

More than one in six struggling to afford broadband

This comes at a time when people are reliant on broadband to work, order essentials and stay in touch with others.

Citizens Advice found that certain groups, including people with children, disabled people, people from Black, Asian or ethnic minority backgrounds, those who were shielding and young people are struggling with their broadband bill. Also, that broadband customers in receipt of low-income benefits such as Universal Credit were twice as likely to struggle to pay their bill. Towards the end of last year, 2.3 million people were behind with their broadband bill. In December, regulator Ofcom ‘strongly urged’ all providers to consider offering cheaper tariffs for those on a low income or struggling financially. Citizens Advice is calling on the government and Ofcom to fast-track these plans by making it compulsory for all providers to offer affordable tariffs to people on low-income benefits. For people on welfare benefits, every single decision about how they spend £1 can make a difference.

Challenge Crypt

We had a really amazing response from our challenge in February and the winners were Graham Bacon in the adult group and Meadow in the youth group (see images above). Graham kindly donated his winning prize back to the Crypt to help our on-going fundraising. See all the entries on our website. It was a difficult job to select a winner.

April Challenge

Our challenge for April will be a photographic one. This is open to adults and children as for the other challenges. We know there are many brilliant photographers out there so this one will be really interesting. The theme is Capture Someone You Know (but ask their consent as these will be online). It would be good to hear why you have chosen them as well. Please send your entries as attachments to cryptbookings3@gmail.com by 28th April. www.thecryptgallery.com Winners of the February Crypt Challenge (l-r) Graham Bacon and Meadow. However currently only three of the largest 13 firms offer these tariffs. The Acting Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: ‘The pandemic has cemented the fact that broadband is an essential utility. It is not a luxury for those who can afford it.’ If you are struggling with broadband payments or any other bills please contact your local Citizens Advice office on 0800 144 8848 and they will be able to help.

Seaford wildflowers return for a new season Seaford Town Council announces that green spaces will continue to welcome wildflowers

Southdown Corner

After the successful trial in Summer 2020 of wildflowers in The Crouch, Seaford Town Council is trialling an extension of wildflower is through The Crouch, Dane Road, and the War Memorial. The War Memorial will be adapted in its planting to include its much-loved bedding plants, perennials and wildflowers, which will give the area more flowering and colour throughout the year. The changes in the wildflower and grass cutting will save the Town Council and Seaford residents over 10% in annual grounds maintenance costs – considering the financial pressure placed on the Town Council due to COVID-19, an essential saving. The Salts, The Crouch and Princess Drive Green will see some areas allowed to grow to encourage natural wildflowers and ecology. An example of stunning

With many animals and insect species being pushed to near extinction, we must act now, to encourage their return. Greeting new residents in lockdown Dementia is a debilitating illness. It does not stand still, and its effects can become more impactful over time. This means that change will come, even when the rest of the world is standing still in lockdown. People with dementia might need to make the move into a care home for a number of reasons. Their needs might have increased as their dementia has progressed, or because of a crisis such as a hospital admission. It might be because the family or carer is no longer able to support the person. Whatever the reason, the move can be really difficult, practically and emotionally, for everyone involved. Add to this the past twelve months’ worth of anxious tales about care homes and the virus, and understandably families, friends and medical professionals may be in two minds about which way to turn in caring for an individual with dementia. However, we in the residential care community are more ready than ever to offer safety and security and the promise of an active life, even at these times. It is always best to try to think ahead about if and when the transition to long-term care might be necessary, but it is not always easy to make the call when concern turns to crisis, even under the best of circumstances. Usually, the reason for considering a move is to ensure 24-hour supervision or ensure an improved quality of life and social contact for someone who may have become isolated. At Clifden House, we have always been of the mindset that one’s ability to not only cope with, but even thrive with a condition such as dementia, may only really become possible with the assistance

116

of trained carers and professionals in a residential setting. That independent life in a flat in town may not be quite as fulfilling if it leads to solitude or selfneglect, through absolutely no fault of one’s own. For most of us, forgetting to take our medication may be easily fixed, but for a vulnerable individual it can be life changing. This is just one example where the daily engagement of informed carers can lift the individual from just existing to really living with their condition. At the same time, carers have devoted years to caring for the person and may need help in coping with moving on from this difficult role. We truly feel that this can become an opportunity to move back into the role of friend or family member, that was simply not possible before. A carer can now find ways of continuing their caring role in partnership with the care home, as well as developing other interests in their own lives. Moving into care continues to be the start of a partnership between the individual with dementia, the carer and family and the care home staff. This may be life changing, now more than ever. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Seaford Museum & Heritage Society

Famous People... Sir Alfred Cope (1877 – 1954) from boy clerk via Customs & Excise, knighted for his role in the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921, General Secretary to the National Liberal Party and much else besides to Chairman of the Seaford Urban District Council.

Sir Alfred Cope (known as Andy) was born in Lambeth, the eldest of 11 children in a ‘modest family’. Boy clerk, he rose to be in charge of investigations throughout London, pursuing smugglers and illicit distillers for Customs and Excise. Drafted from the Ministry of Pensions to the AngloIrish settlement talks in 1920/1, he was regarded by many as a controversial figure with unconventional views. The target of hostility from many, however, he won the respect and confidence of the separatist leaders. He was described as displaying zest, courage and initiative in his search for a compromise acceptable to all sides which led to the 1921 Anglo-Irish treaty. He was appointed KCB in 1922 and became General Secretary of the National Liberal Party. In March 1924 his personal reputation was attacked in the House of Lords by Lord Muskerry. Defended by other peers, this led to confirmation of the principle:

“Tradition of your Lordships that we do not attack civil servants; we attack their chiefs... when we reflect on this debate in the future, that it is our rule, whatever the provocation, not to attack civil servants for anything they do, however strongly we feel about it. It is our tradition to attack their chiefs and I hope this tradition will not be in any way weakened.’ – The Earl of Donoughmore. This important principle still applies today. He then went into the management of Collieries where his negotiating skills were again valued both nationally and internationally. He retired in 1935. At the outbreak of the Second World War he returned to Whitehall for a short time as a volunteer in Air Raid Precautions. A resident of Marine Drive, he remained a driving force in ARP work in Seaford throughout the war. In April 1939 he was co-opted onto Seaford Urban District Council for the purposes of being elected its Chairman. Controversially it seems a ‘deputation’ of local Councillors, unhappy at the prospect of the then Vice-Chairman assuming the Chair, approached Cope. A newspaper column, in the Museum archives, by the anonymous ‘Mercredan’ described the ‘happenings of the past few days’ which included an after-dinner speech given by Cope, described as his ‘rotten hole’ speech! Despite misgivings ‘Mercredean’ did not challenge Cope’s potential or his motives, however he could not resist the comment, ‘Here is one, until recently almost unknown to the great majority of Seaford people... He proved himself one of the ablest Civil Servants in this country and no one can convince me that the friend and confidant of Prime Ministers, both here and in the Empire, the associate of some leading public men and a great industrial leader, is one unworthy to occupy the chair at The Crouch (the Council Offices)’. After the tragic death of fireman Fred Mace, Cope chaired a mass meeting in Queens Hall to protest about the allegations in the press about the Seaford ‘Cowards’. Cope died in Seaford, at his home at 11 Westdown Road, on 13th May 1954. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.
