Welcome

to the April issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. Easter falls in April this year with Good Friday on the 15th and Easter Sunday on the 17th. The churches in Seaford are holding special Easter services, all of which are listed on page 16. Easter can also be a time to reflect and take stock of what is going on in our lives and the world – the war in Ukraine has been horrendous and Seaford has wasted no time in offering support in the crisis – turn to page 8 to find out how the town has been helping out. The East Blatchington Lectures return to St Peters Church – see page 67 for details of this years’ talks, and we have an update from Cross Way church on page 84. There are plenty of arts and crafts this month, with an exhibition at the Crypt Gallery on page 30, painter Lindy Dunbar’s exhibition on page 23, a pop-up Easter Craft Fair on page 64, and the latest collection from Gallery Uno – this month’s cover is a painting by Barbie Harrison, Gallery Uno’s featured artist – see page 18. Find out what’s happening at Seaford Afternoon Flower Club on page 97 and the Meridian Lacemakers are on page 108 We have news from Seaford Striders on page 60 and an update from the Youth Counselling Project on page 73. And keeping us all safe and sound is Seaford Neighbourhood Watch Association on page 36. All this and so much more in your April issue. Happy Easter! Fran Tegg, Editor

Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford this month. Be aware that events could be affected by COVID rule changes announced after the time of writing

Art

Andrew Rafferty is showing his photographs at the Crypt Gallery in Church Street until Tuesday 12th April, with an exhibition called Seahenge in the Flint Room and Passion in the Undercroft. Free admission.

Cinema

The cinema’s spring season should have been closing on Friday 1st April at 7.30pm with Daniel Craig’s final Bond outing in No Time to Die (12A), but on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm it will also be showing the rescheduled charity event for The Youth Counselling Project, the lively musical In the Heights (U). Directed by Jon M Chu and starring Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace, its stunning music and lyrics are co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the Heights is a powerhouse of Latino vitality and promises pure joy. A film version of the Broadway musical, it centres on characters living in Washington Heights who can only aspire to the good life in neighbouring Manhattan. For more info go to seafordcinema.org and page 73. The summer season has a royally theatrical start with a screening of NT Live’s production of Henry V (15) on Thursday 21st April at 7pm starring Kit Harington of Game of Thrones playing the title role in William Shakespeare’s thrilling study of nationalism, war and the psychology of power. The film programme opens on Friday 22nd April with the COVID-postponed showing of Hope Gap (12). The director and writer of this autobiographically inspired film, William Nicholson, will be at the cinema to talk about how he made this

4

picture. As well as starring Bill Nighy, Annette Bening and Josh O’Connor, it goes big on Seaford and the Downs. Tckets for all shows are via seaford cinema.org, the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) or on the door.

Folk music

Seaford Sessions is hosting The Trials of Cato at Seaford Little Theatre on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm. Dubbed the Sex Pistols of folk, they revitalise old bones to have you stomping your feet to their modern spin on tradition. Formed in Beirut, the band returned to the UK in 2016, performing up and down the country. They won Radio 2’s Best Album in 2019’s Folk Awards, with Mark Radcliffe calling them: ‘One of the real discoveries on the folk circuit in recent times.’ fRoots magazine said the band’s name was on everyone’s lips. Tickets from the TIC or from WeGotTickets.

Classical music

Seaford Choral Society is putting on a Spring Concert at the Baptist Church on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm.

Seaford Photographic Society We are often told that to improve our photography we need to add that ‘extra element’ to transform a photo from just a record of what we have seen into something that tells a story and that has obvious input from the photographer. This is something that is a lot easier said than done, but with time and practice it can be achieved. We were therefore very fortunate that, due to a last-minute cancellation, we were able to welcome Lloyd Moore DPAGB AFIAP BPE4* to give his talk entitled The Art of Storytelling – the Extra Element. This was an inspiring lecture, with lots of technical hints and examples, and I think most of us went away itching to try out some of his ideas. There was far too much to summarise here, but some of the elements to consider, in trying to make our photographs stand out from the rest, included impact, originality, narrative, mood, emotion, movement and behaviour. The second round of this year’s PDI league competition for Projected Digital Images was judged by regular visitor to Seaford, Zoe Garnham-Archer. In the Standard group, Tulip by Peter Cavanagh (photo left) was the only image to score the maximum 20/20. Simon Watkins continues to impress with his superb wildlife images in the Advanced group and his Long Tailed Cormorant scored another well-deserved 20 (photo right). Also doing well in this group was Colin Mitchell’s Dog Sledding in Finland and a black and white image taken in Greece by Chris Dawson.

6

The following week we had two set-subject competitions, judged by Mike Warren ARPS CPAGB. Stephen Day’s tennis shot perfectly captured the moment and got him 1st place in the Sport competition (photo right). There were 21 entries for the Creative competition and Thelma Long’s ‘The Ghost Within’ took the winner’s trophy (photo left). Following a series on ‘Zoom-only’ meetings at the start of the year, we were pleased to get back to our usual venue for the third round of the PDI league and Stephen Day scored the only 20 in the Standard Group. Feeling Refreshed by Janice Hewitt (photo right) was one of the five 20s awarded in the Advanced group. Following a gap of a couple of years we are currently looking at staging our popular annual Print Exhibition again this year. Details have yet to be finalised but it will be well advertised around town and on social media, with full details on the website. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including the latest news, programme of events, successful images and competition results. If you want to improve your photography and meet some like-minded people, why not think about joining us? We meet every Friday at around 7.15pm from September until the end of May at Seaford’s Constitutional Club in Crouch Lane. You are welcome to just turn up to one of our meetings to see what you think.

Seaford supports Ukraine East Sussex Charity Boost for the Homeless & Other Worthy Causes has collected a huge amount of donations from Seaford residents, including the loan of a removal van to transport items to Hove, to then send out to Ukraine. and Poland. ‘What we thought would be a small operation, turned out to be our largest to date,’ explained volunteer Carole Pink. She continued: ‘East Sussex Charity Boost for the Homeless and Other Worthy Causes were approached to ask for donations of clothing, toiletries and dried food for Ukraine. We put a couple of notices out; one on Seaford Notice Board and the other to the Community Champions at Morrisons, expecting just a few replies. Almost immediately my phone wouldn’t stop pinging with messages, literally every five minutes for the first day. Items started arriving, the word quickly spread and suddenly my downstairs

rooms were full of donations. There were so many items that the rooms had to be emptied twice! On top of this we had a van and car that picked up the donations from Morrisons and two mini vans full of items from Seaford Head school. Our members sorted everything and travelled back and forth to doantion points that were transporting to either Ukraine or Poland. We even had a removal van lent to us by Steve Hampton removals. Lots of local groups were involved in this massive manoeuvre, including Teddy’s Treats, Bond School of Dance, J J Fashions, Walmer Road Store, Around a Pound, Harbourside Gym, Apex Care and many local resident for which we shall be eternally grateful (I’m so sorry if I missed anyone, it literally was a flurry of what seemed to be hundreds of people). Carole Pink Photos from top: Seven trollies of donations from Morrisons customers; Morrisons Community Champions; the Ukrainian lady who organised the lorries going to Poland; the huge amount of donated items packed into boxes, ready to go into the lorry. On the Verge

Blossoming April

By the time you read this, we should be well and truly into Spring, and just like the flower buds, we are raising our faces to the sun and blossoming with ideas to bring nature back to our town. We are trying to get as much support as possible for No Mow May, an initiative by Plantlife. Since the1930s we have lost 97% of our flower-rich meadows. Leaving your lawn to grow (even just for the month), will allow wildflowers to appear, which can increase the amount of nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies and butterflies. Could you help us spread the word, by stocking or giving out our new No Mow May leaflets, or putting one up on a noticeboard near you? We would love to hear more success stories about your meadow projects. Check out the On The Verge blog page for a story about how Daniela turned her front lawn into a meadow. Not only did it help wildlife and look fantastic, but it brought neighbours together and encouraged them to join in this year!

Some of our Renaturing Champions plan to work closely with the ‘Friends of ’ green spaces groups set up by Martello Rotary, such as Chalvington Fields and Foster Close. Thanks to the Cares lottery fund, we now have funding to buy survey kits – this will include flower guides, hand lenses and quadrats to carry out plant surveys, litter picking safety equipment, and more basic spotting guides for plants and beasts for Citizen scientists of all ages. We also have funding for event kits (tables, banners, collecting boxes etc)’ so that we can get outside and do some roadshows to spread the word. Let us know if you would like us to attend your events, or visit your Seaford club. We always need more volunteers, and would love to hear from people who would like to help with events and workshops, with writing and design for an exciting new newsletter, publicity (especially social media experts), fundraising, finance and administration. We would also really welcome people with specialist knowledge they would like to share – for example on butterflies, bees, fungi, bats etc! https://www.seafuture.org/verges-blog/ Email: ontheverge@seafuture.org

We are still looking for more Renaturing Champions to regularly monitor biodiversity in local green spaces, particularly more people at the Salts, Edinburgh Road, and Chyngton Lane. Please get in touch to find out more. We hope our champions will enjoy helping us with formal plants surveys and other initiatives, like pollinator counting with Buglife. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Tower House School Garden project A Seaford school’s garden project has received a boost thanks to a local garden centre and Sussex-based charity. The Budding Foundation worked with Paradise Park garden centre in Newhaven to donate plants, compost and seeds to Tower House School, Seaford. David Donnelly, senior teacher at Tower House, is organising a project to renovate the school gardens with the help of 16 students who have a primary diagnosis of autism. ‘We are delighted to be able to help the students as they create a more engaging and meaningful space [in which] to spend time and learn’, said Clive Gravett the Budding Foundation’s creator. ‘Hands-on learning

experiences, particularly those in nature, provide a wonderfully rich experience and therefore it is something we are pleased to support’. Photo: Martin Waite, teacher at Tower House, together with Luca one of his students and Clive Gravett founder of the Budding Foundation charity.

UNO22: FOUR – A Joyous Selection of Art, Design and Craft for Eastertide Gallery Uno, 14a High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Summer opening times: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays midday – 3pm (Closed Wednesdays), from Thursday 31st March until Tuesday 26th April. We are well into spring at Gallery UNO. As Barbie Harrison’s painting depicts on our latest poster there are signs of warmer days ahead, with budding trees and returning swallows in the skies. This painting and many other delights for the eyes will feature in the Sussex Arts Collective’s fourth monthly exhibition of art, craft and design of the year. And, as with all their previous exhibitions UNO 22 FOUR will be as individual and distinctive as the next ensuring you that like the swallows in Barbie’s painting, you’ll return again and again to see what’s new. Amongst the many exhibitors taking part in the show, there are those who have graciously contributed to the Collective’s success over many years, none more so than Barbie Harrison, this month’s artist in the spotlight.

BARBIE HARRISON – Painter Born in Durham, Barbie came to Sussex in 1969, to study English and American literature at Sussex University, graduating in 1972.

Seduced by the soft feminine landscape of the Sussex Downs, so different to the dramatic and sparse beauty of Weardale, Barbie settled in East Hoathly with husband potter and teacher Dave, their children and numerous dogs, cats, sheep and chickens. When the children were small, she began to develop her long-established interest in the visual arts, eventually painting part time for a well known shop in

18

London: Dragons of Walton Street, which sold painted furniture for children. She developed a now well- loved portfolio of designs, which primarily featured animals and the natural world and worked on numerous pieces of furniture for the rich and famous. Children all over the world have been given chairs decorated with ‘Barbara’s Bunnies’! For many years, she curated the art and craft show during the Chiddingly Festival, encouraging and promoting not only established, but also fledgling local artists, designers and makers. Barbie regularly opened her studio during the festival as well as exhibiting in Brighton Festival Open Houses. Barbie has been a member of the Sussex Arts Collective since its inception in the early 2000s. During this period she began working on her ‘modern icons’ inspired by Greek and Byzantine icons and tapestries. These small wooden panels explore her love of the natural world, particularly the flora and fauna of the Sussex Downs, which she observes from her garden studio with her whippets at her feet. They are executed in oil and enamels on reclaimed and treated wood, and more recently on poplar off cuts from a local supplier of wood for musical instruments. Once rubbed back or ‘distressed’ they are partially gilded to convey a sense of age and mystery. They aim to capture a fleeting moment of time and express the visual beauty inherent in plants, birds and animals. They are contemporary yet timeless, reminiscent of traditional folk art from bygone days. During a trip to Dartmoor, she discovered an enigmatic place on the map called Ephraim Pinch. The name has subsequently become an imaginary character that has triggered a series of paintings depicting the travels of the eponymous Ephraim, many of which are in her current exhibition.

Seaford u3a News February’s coffee morning was attended by a record number of people, both members and non-members, reflecting no doubt the general wish of the population to get out and do things again following our Covid problems. Membership of Seaford u3a now stands at over 400. Hoping to build on this success, coffee mornings are now free to all. This month’s coffee morning will be on Wednesday 20th April from 10am to 12 noon at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. As before non-members as well as members will be welcome. Nothing in Seaford could be better value – free coffee/ tea, biscuits and friendly chat! Talks at the Downs are well back into their stride. Ian Everest gave a well-received talk to a packed audience on A History of Newhaven running through its history by means of the alphabet, which was a novel approach. Ian grew up in Bishopstone old village and knows this area well. He had some excellent photographs to illustrate his talk. Talks continued with Anne English starting her group about women overshadowed by a more famous relative. The first subject was Anne Bronte, sister of Charlotte, who was a respected writer in her own right though she never achieved the fame of her sister. Anne followed up with a talk on Annabella Millbanke, Byron’s wife, and his daughter Ada Lovelace, a mathematician who worked with Babbage on his Analytical Engine. The wide-ranging programme which followed included more Women in the Shadows, Early Art from the Netherlands and two member’s interest talks on A Soldier’s Journey to Siberia and Berlin and

on Opiates. In addition, in April there will be a free talk by Ruth McEnery-Carter on Preventing Falls. The talks at the Downs are open to members only, and there is usually a small entry charge. A new Art Group is starting at the Hillcrest Centre, Newhaven, where experienced artists would be welcome to pass on their tips. There are now three Art Groups running. Despite the large membership, Seaford u3a is run by a small Committee of eight members, who divide the roles between them. They are ably assisted by some members who are not on the committee but take on single-purpose roles such as running the pub lunch or outings. Like most voluntary organisations, Seaford u3a can have difficulty in finding volunteers, particularly volunteer committee members. New volunteers would be welcome. They could either signify their willingness to help by giving notice before the Annual Meeting in October, or by approaching a committee member to discuss their involvement. New Group leaders are also always welcome particularly as the membership has expanded so much. Seaford u3a members have lively minds and a variety of talents, so a willingness to share their interests would be just what is needed to run a group either in their own homes or in one of the outside venues. Most groups run for a period of between four and six sessions, either on a weekly or fortnightly interval. Again, anyone interested should contact a committee member to discuss this. Running a Group brings a lot of pleasure to those members who attend and is not very onerous. The u3a is essentially an amateur organisation, so perfection is not essential! For more information about Seaford u3a, see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack. Common Pipistrelle

I spend way too much time in graveyards (especially considering that I’m going to spend an awful lot of time in one in the future). But they are great places to look for Pipistrelle bats. At this time of year, adult Pipistrelles are emerging from their winter hibernation and taking flight. Above Sussex, the night sky is a battlefield of deafening cries as Pipistrelles swoop and swirl, plummet and pounce at their insect prey. The acrobatic anarchy overhead goes unnoticed by us humans. Our hearing is limited and when it comes to night vision we’re as blind as, well, something with really bad eyesight…in fact, anything but a bat. Bats have excellent vision. But it certainly isn’t their best sense. Echolocation is one of the animal world’s most incredible superpowers. A Pipistrelle shouts, the shout hits something and bounces back. This echo is instantly analysed in an amazing brain and tells the bat how far away the object is and whether it’s a mosquito, a moth or a mansion. To get the maximum information from their echo, Pipistrelles yell at high frequencies (45 kHz, we can only hear up 20 kHz). And these shouts are loud; pneumatic drill or jet fighter loud. Up to 110 decibels in some species. A bat would deafen itself if it heard its own shout. So Pipistrelles have to disengage their ears, then shout, then turn their hearing back on, listen for the echo, analyse, then start all over again. All at the rate of 10-15 times a second. This gives bats an amazing, multi-layered awareness of their surroundings. But it’s tricky (and impolite) to shout when you’re eating, so once a moth is in the mouth the bat has to chew-shout-listen-chew-shout-listen to avoid a collision.

Pipistrelle’s Freddie Mercury. These are the Soprano Pipistrelles. There’s now a third: Nathusius’ Pipistrelle. By affixing lightweight metal rings to this species’ wings, researchers have discovered that these bats are migrating to Sussex from as far away as Latvia. An amazing journey for an amazing animal. Michael Blencowe of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Images l-r: Pipistrelle by Roger Jones©; Common Pipistrelle by Hugh Clark FRPS©.

There are 17 different species of bat in Sussex. Our smallest – the Common Pipistrelle – is also the one you’re most likely to see around your gardens. Back in the 80s there were just four TV channels, two types of videocassette and one species of Pipistrelle in Britain. But in the 90s, scientists discovered that some Pipistrelles were echolocating at higher frequencies (55 kHz); a Montserrat Caballé to the Common To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

SEAHENGE: A JOURNEY The discovery of Seahenge on the foreshore in North Norfolk caused great excitement. It was a circle of 55 split oak trunks, and at its centre – a huge oak stump, upside down. What was it for? A place where body and spirit meet? A mortuary? A site for sky-burials? The poetry and story-telling of Kevin Crossley-Holland and the thrilling photography of Andrew Rafferty come together with memorable effect in Seahenge: A Journey. This specially produced read-aloud ePub features Kevin Crossley-Holland narrating the poetry.

a photographic installation for the spooky crypt in St Pancras Church.

Andrew Rafferty is an innovative photographer whose work is always imaginative and fresh. Art supporters Ernst and Young have no fewer than one hundred and thirteen of his images in their London HQ. He photographed the development of London’s City Hall from start to completion with his images displayed when the Queen opened the building, and he created

The exhibition is on at Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford from Tuesday 29th March to Tuesday 12th April, 11am – 4pm except Sunday 12pm – 4pm.

An exhibition at The Crypt gallery displays for the first time new images from his revised ePub in Apple Books, released on 1st March 2022.

Andrew Rafferty’s photography of the historical landscape of Britain spans some 40 years, and started with the wonderful collection in The Stones Remain (Century Hutchinson, 1989). He is one of the few photographers to have images not only of Seahenge just after it was discovered, but of the elusive Seahenge II, just 100m away, but which rarely surfaces above sands. The images capture the essence of places and of nature, where colours blend and harmonise, transfiguring the spirit of the space, and enabling the viewer to relate to an image with an experience of their own. There are many reviews of his work in Seahenge: A Journey. Here are just a few: Rafferty’s images...are as enigmatic as the circles themselves. Norfolk Archaeological Trust Rafferty’s rich-hued, abstracted photographs...are almost tactile in the sensory connections they make. New Welsh Review. Dramatic, often gorgeous...photographs. Salzburg Poetry Review. ...the images are kinetic with rhythmic waves, blurred branches, smudged clouds and dancing grasses... impressionistic, atmospheric. Book 2.0

What is dementia? The word ‘dementia’ describes symptoms that may initially show in mood changes. The symptoms often include difficulties with thinking, language, day-to-day memory, planning and orientation. Yet it is the manner in which the symptoms become apparent, and more obvious to friends and families of sufferers, that make this such a difficult and emotionally trying disease. In fact, one of the best definitions we have come across to the describe the illness is one where the sufferer may have no idea that they are unwell. Imagine being confronted by someone in your home who is claiming, however gently and empathetically, that they are there to give you a bath. Your confusion at this event, even if you cannot remember that the same thing occurred the day before, and the day before that, may swiftly turn to exasperation or even anger at the ridiculous idea that someone should be here to bathe you. Yet you may not have been aware that perhaps you’ve been unable to look after yourself quite as well lately. You’re forgetting your meals, or having issues cooking on your old kitchen, and beginning to lose weight, and forgetting your medication because that used to be taken after dinner, and you haven’t been out in a while, or caught up with concerned family, and so on. So how do you give someone a bath when they don’t even recognise that they need help with this previously straightforward part of their day? By gaining their consent, their real consent, through communicating the idea of a rewarding rest in warm water and a cosy environment or freshening up in the shower so that the reward becomes their idea, their goal, we can then assist them to achieve another positive in their day. At Clifden House we negotiate this learning and relearning with each individual in many different

34

areas, perhaps several times a day. This requires special patience and fortitude from our carers. We care deeply about our residents and have specific training to help them with their needs, whatever they might be. Initially you may see that the person is withdrawn, anxious or unusually sad. This may start off in small ways and grow over time to become more noticeable. With some types of dementia, the person may also suffer from visual hallucinations or become delusional. We take an individual approach to each resident, working alongside families to find out things they liked doing, and all our staff are fully trained in managing symptoms. Often, this can be as simple as taking the time to sit with a resident and talking to them about their day, in order to open up all and any lines of communication at a time when communicating previously straightforward thoughts and emotions has become complicated, difficult and frustrating. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup SAVE THE DATE: SPRING EXPO & AGM: Notice is hereby given of the S&BNHW Association AGM to be held on WEDNESDAY 25TH MAY at SEAFORD BAPTIST CHURCH HALL at 6pm. The brief AGM will be followed by our Spring Expo. Come along for an information-filled, socially fun, Great Neighbours event where you can meet the people who keep us safe, get tons of info on great safety and security products and services, and meet some of the unsung heroes that serve our town. Reminders and a programme will be sent out by email, so please subscribe to the mailing list if you haven’t already done so. To exhibit, please email our Chairman, Mark Brown chairman@sandbnhw.co.uk. Warmer weather brings everyone out, and unfortunately that includes those with nefarious intentions too. In Seaford we are savvier and safer than most, but with all the isolation of the last two years, a quick refresher on our SMARTS is in order. There is a wealth of advice at https://www.sussex.police.uk/cp/ crime-prevention/ to keep you safe, happy and well informed, but here’s our SMARTS recap.

S = Scam Aware:

Scams are rife and you don’t have to be online to be scammed. A scam can be as simple as a bloke on your doorstep telling you your roof needs fixing (when it doesn’t) and then charging you an arm and a leg for the work (that he never did). To learn all about Scams, how to spot them, how to avoid them, and how to stay safe, please visit https:// www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk. Run by National Trading Standards, this site is the most comprehensive and effective tool against becoming a victim. The site is fun, informative, a real eye opener, and free.

M = Money Wise: More and more reports are

received daily of neighbours falling into money traps where scammers and frauds are becoming more

36

sophisticated and harder to spot. The most common types of Money trap are the unexpected (and very frightening) phone calls about unpaid HMRC bills, your NI number being cancelled, or collections calls for debt you never actually had in the first place. Another is the increase in Lonely Hearts scams where people innocently date online and find themselves ‘groomed’ into lending money to total strangers. More worrying is the spate of social media hacking, where someone you are friends with on Facebook, for example, suddenly direct messages you asking for financial assistance. This is a cunning deception and your real friend will be oblivious to the hack or that you have been asked for money. Another is online marketplaces, where folk pay for goods and holidays for example, where the goods and holidays do not exist. The money is gone, so is the scammer, and there is no recourse. A devastating scam is one where you are convinced to move your pension, make an investment or buy stocks and shares where the ‘agent’ is convincing and on the surface of things, everything seems legitimate (and too good to be true). Always check https://www.fca.org. uk/scamsmart for advice and guidance. Don’t ever part with money unless you are absolutely certain of who you are paying the funds to, have an invoice or some kind of record of contract, and have verified that the person you are paying money to is who they say they are, and where savings and pensions are concerned, you have taken reliable and trustworthy advice from a registered and licenced financial planner. Never pay for goods or services with vouchers or store cards of any kind – this is a sure sign that the deal is as dodgy as it ever could be. To learn more about money scams and for excellent guidance, visit https:// www.moneyhelper.org.uk/

A = Alert: None of us like to feel we must be on

our guard all the time but there are simple ways to stay safe that are easy to turn into habits that will keep you and your possessions safe.

• •

Lock your outbuildings even when at home – Fit a decent lock fitted, hinge and fittings that cannot be shaken or pried loose. Lock your doors, even when you are at home –

doorstep crime and opportunistic thefts can be avoided this way. Someone distracting you at the front door, could mean his pal is helping himself to your wallet through the kitchen door! Close and lock your windows and doors when going out – a hard-to-get into property will deter an opportunistic thief. And if you have a home alarm system, use it! Keep your bags and backpacks closed and on your person when out and about – pickpockets are fast and an unattended open bag is an open invitation. Mark your possessions and your bikes – there is a great website where you can register your movables https://www.immobilise.com/ which is Police run and will help get your things back to you if stolen. Be aware of your surroundings. Fun in the sun can make us all a little complacent, but looking around now and again may not only keep you safe, but will keep others safe too if you spot something. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle overnight. If you have a locked garage, there’s less worry, but if parking on the road or the drive, take your valuables indoors.

R = Report: The Police can only do something if

they know something. We complain that there is not enough policing, but few of us are aware that Police resources are allocated to where they are most needed. If no incidents are reported, then no policing is required.

For any emergency, or where a crime is being committed or is about to be committed, where minors are involved, or where there is a threat to human life or property, call 999. Do not even hesitate. The call centre we have in East Sussex is state of the art and your call will be triaged fast and efficiently. For any other incident, you have a number of choices. By far the most effective way to report incidents is online at https://www.sussex.police.uk/ and right from the landing page, choose REPORT and the most appropriate link, or TELL US ABOUT to advise the Police on other matters they ought to know about. You can also email the Police at 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk or if you have the patience, call 101, which is the least preferred method for the Police as it is so time consuming for both them and the caller. Attempted Phishing Scams? email: report@phishing. gov.uk and for all other types of attempted fraud or scam report it to Actionfraud online at https://www. actionfraud.police.uk/ or by phone to 0300 1232040. Remember that the Police can only stop crimes where they know about them in the first instance.

T = Take Care of Each Other:

Great Neighbours make for safer neighbourhoods, no doubt about it. Get to know your neighbours. This doesn’t mean you have to be pals, just get a feel for your patch, what your neighbours look like, who may need a little cont...

Almost all streets in Seaford and Bishopstone have NHW street signs and if your street sign needs a face lift, or is missing, please email chairman@sandbnhw.co.uk and we will get it sorted. One day he asked to have a story that he was in, so whilst playing around with lots of silly stories including his friends and family, the story of Phoenix the dinosaur losing his tail kept growing. Phoenix added lots of details and told his daddy where he wanted the story to go. They decided to write it down so as not to forget it, and eventually it became this book.’

This children’s picture book is packed with fun and adventure. We follow the story of a young boy who likes to put on his costume to become a dinosaur. During the story he loses his tail, and whilst looking for it he becomes reminiscent of the things he misses about his tail. Will he find his tail in the end? We s hall see… Micklefield Nursery ordered a copy and shared it with the children as part of their World Book Day celebrations in March. ATTENTION WOMEN BORN IN THE 1950s I have written previously about the plight of 3.8 million women born in the 1950s who were given little, or in most cases, no notice of up to a 6-year increase in their state pension age, leading to a loss for each woman in the region of £50,000 in expected pension income. The Lewes constituency has approximately 6,500 women affected by this lack of notice. Many women were left struggling financially (clearly partners and husbands have also been affected by a loss of up to £50,000 in expected joint pension income), but those women who were not lucky enough to have partners/husbands to support them i.e. those who are single, separated, divorced or widowed, were left in absolute poverty, and many have lost their homes and their savings. The impact for these women has been devastating. Women in their thousands complained to the DWP, then to the Independent Case Examiner and lastly to The Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman (PHSO) as far back as 2016. The PHSO

Craftstone of Sussex

Gas, Electric & Solid Fuel Fireplaces & Stoves

has now completed Stage 1 of their investigation into 1950s-born women’s complaints, and last July they concluded that the DWP was guilty of maladministration in not notifying women of the changes. They are awaiting further evidence from the DWP in order to progress Stage 2 of their investigation which consists of 3 stages. An All Party Parliamentary Group for Women’s Pension Inequality, co-chaired by Andrew Gwynne, Labour MP, and Peter Aldous, Conservative MP, with approximately 13 other MPs as members, was set up and they looked at evidence relating to the lack of notice provided by the DWP and the impact that it had on 1950s-born women’s lives. They diligently sifted through mountains of evidence, listened carefully to the various women’s pensions groups and they really seemed to understand our experience. The MPs concluded that: ‘Not only has the maladministration impacted on women financially, but it has also caused extraordinary emotional, physical and psychological distress, forcing women to endure a reduced quality of life’. They said that the impact is ‘as devastating as it is widespread.’ Despite these MPs’ different backgrounds and political perspectives they are absolutely united in calling for compensation at the highest level. As the report says, 1950s women ‘have faced horrific injustice and have been neglected time and time again.’ Janet Blackman, Co-ordinator for the Lewes WASPI (Women Against State Pension Injustice) Group says that it is now time for the government to face up to its responsibilities and accept that 1950s women deserve fair and fast compensation. She said that it is important to note that WASPI women do not disagree with the equalisation of the state pension age but the way in which it was introduced for women born in the 1950s, with no time to mitigate such a devastating loss. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Seaford Inner Wheel

Donation to St Wilfrid’s Hospice

At the February meeting members of Seaford Inner Wheel warmly welcomed Sarah Marsh, Community Fund Raiser from St Wilfrid’s Hospice. St Wilfrid’s provides support for people with any life-limiting illness towards the end of their lives. Support is provided to families and carers in the hospice building, in the person’s own home or a care home. Sarah gave an entertaining and informative address, explaining how last year St Wilfrid’s celebrated its Ruby Anniversary – 40 years of giving support to local people, their families, and carers. Fundraising events included a Starlight Stroll memory walk, an Art Auction, where local artists kindly donated 40 pieces of art which were sold via an online auction, and ‘Paint the Town Red’, when over 150 businesses and 18 schools across East Sussex threw parties, dressed in red, lit

up their buildings and laid on lunches, dinners, and afternoon teas. Joint President Eileen Lynch presented Sarah with a cheque for £1,000 that had been raised and donated by members of Seaford Inner Wheel. Money raised by Seaford Inner Wheel came from fundraising events held at a Support our Seaford Charities event in September and Clinton Centre, and a Christmas Cracker event in December. SEAFORD ROTARY

Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs 2022

The first Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair of 2022 will take place on Sunday 3rd April at West Martello Fields. Further Fairs will take place on the dates shown below.

Homemade refreshments will be available throughout the day. For further information, see www.bluebellwalk. co.uk.

Defibrillators in Seaford

Seaford Rotary has been researching the provision of defibrillators in Seaford as part of a small team, including Seaford Mayor Councillor Rodney Reed and Greg Anderson, a Friend of Seaford Rotary. There are 19 defibrillators in Seaford, nine of which are available 24/7. There are other defibrillators within schools/ care homes/doctors’ surgeries and private establishments. Relocation of these defibrillators externally is being investigated, as well as additional defibrillators in areas with poor coverage so that they are available 24/7.

Bluebell Walk and Farm Trail

Seaford Rotary is pleased to announce that on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd April 2022 it will be running and providing the refreshments at the Bluebell Walk at Bates Green Farm, Tye Hill Road, Arlington, Polegate BN6 6SH.

In April, a carpet of bluebells and other woodland flowers should be able to be viewed in warm, sunny and dry weather. We look forward to seeing you; come and enjoy a relaxing bluebell woodland stroll.

54

First Responders were not aware of several defibrillators in the town, and as some First Responders work with the Southeast Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb), it is possible that they are similarly unaware. There are no maintenance plans for several donated defibrillators, or funds are not available to replace batteries and pads when used or time expired. Three 24/7 defibrillators are not operational, either due to damage or life expired batteries and pads. It is not known if SECAmb have been notified that these defibrillators are not useable. Our research has highlighted that in an emergency there could be difficulty in finding a working 24/7 defibrillator. Additionally, without signage or a map, it is difficult to know where the nearest one is situated. The team is working on two initiatives: • installation of direction signs to three defibrillators on the seafront (Sailing Club, Lifeguard garage, Martello toilets) • a map showing the location of the 24/7 defibrillators. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information contact us on www.seafordrotary.org.uk.

Seaford Striders Boost your health and wellbeing: register now for Seaford Striders Couch to 5K Programme

Running is a proven way of boosting both physical and mental health. But getting started isn’t always easy. Seaford Striders running club will be helping runners take their first steps to improved health and wellbeing with the sixth edition of its popular Couch to 5K programme. The programme will take place over nine weeks and follows the NHS Couch to 5k plan with the support of volunteers from the friendly running club. The programme is designed to get just about anyone

off the couch and running 5km in just over two months, under the encouragement and guidance of an experienced running leader. The next Couch to 5K group programme will begin on Tuesday 26th April at 7pm in central Seaford. Margaret Osborne took part in the 2021 Couch to 5K group and was awarded the 5km Award at the Seaford Striders annual awards evening in February. She said: ‘I used to do a bit of running years ago but never got involved with a club and certainly never considered myself to really be a runner. I started the Couch to 5K programme with Seaford Striders after a chance meeting with a club member who encouraged me to give it a go, took my phone number and sent me all the details. We’d never met before!’ Margaret added: ‘The Club members made me feel so welcome, and I really enjoyed the weekly sessions leading to the great sense of achievement I felt when I completed my first 5K run, encouraged all the way by Jill, an experienced Striders member. I now run regularly with Striders on a Wednesday night and have made some lovely friends. The friendly support I’ve found in the Club has encouraged me to go on to enter several races from 10K to 10 miles, and to take part in local Park Runs. I’m looking forward to my next challenge – a Half Marathon in April.’ She concludes by saying: ‘None of this would have happened without the kind and enthusiastic support of other Club members, and the pleasure of being part of a big running family. Running has changed my life. I feel healthier and happier and best of all – I’m now a runner! Thank you, Seaford Striders’. The club continues to lead members of its previous Couch to 5K groups at their regular Monday and Wednesday evening meetings. Participants in the next group are welcome to join Seaford Striders running club for on-going support and coaching during or after the programme. Due to the popularity of previous courses, preregistration is essential by emailing infoseafordstriders. org.uk. Joining instructions will be emailed to participants prior to the start of the programme. For further details on the Seaford Striders visit the website: www.seafordstriders.org.uk Photo: Members of the 2021 Seaford Striders Couch to 5K.

charity event for tycp

When Covid closed school’s anxiety levels among local students rose dramatically, to the extent that when other causes for mental ill health among young people are factored in, The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) is now budgeting to provide therapy for 93 pupils from the town’s five schools in the next academic year. The effects on them of war in Ukraine were at the time of writing undocumented, but there is no doubt that anxiety levels will rise again as a result. This is likely to mean an increased demand for help over and above what has been planned for, with even more money needed to pay for specially-trained therapists. It is known that young people respond well to counselling when it is given quickly, but for some years the NHS’ Child and Mental Health Services (CAMHS) has had long waiting lists for help for all but potentially life-threatening conditions. By providing a Seaford schools-based counselling service TYCP steps in just below CAMHS’ criteria, its therapists giving one-to-one counselling for serious problems such as self-harming, depression and eating disorders. TYCP facilitates a block of 10 sessions for each child believed to benefit from it, each block costing around £500.

TYCP fund-raiser film

In recognition of TYCP’s need for ongoing funding, Seaford Community Cinema is putting on a charity event at the Barn Theatre on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm, and is hoping for a full house to see its screening of the acclaimed Lin-Manuel Miranda musical In the Heights (U). Tickets are now £8 because burgers can no longer by supplied due to unforeseen circumstances. Those who bought a ticket at the £15 price may either have the difference of £7 refunded at the door, or can accept a ticket for another film. As a bonus, up-and-coming dance group Streetfunk will be getting you in the mood by performing just before the film is shown. The film version of In the Heights was adored by the critics. It tells the story of a group of characters living in

impoverished Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan where the good life is tantalisingly close, yet seemingly unattainable, a place to chase dreams. A Rotten Tomatoes consensus said: ‘Lights up for In the Heights, a joyous celebration of heritage and community, fuelled by dazzling direction and singalong songs.’ Directed by Jon M Chu, it stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace.

Miranda and his work

In the Heights has music and lyrics co-written by LinManuel Miranda, whose award-winning work includes Hamilton and Encanto, with a Tony for Best Original Score for In the Heights. In the Heights and Hamilton both won Laurence Olivier Outstanding Achievement in Music awards for Miranda. Miranda made his Broadway debut in the 2008 musical In the Heights, in which he starred and wrote the music and lyrics. The production won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The stage musical was adapted into the film released in 2021. Miranda’s script, along with music and lyrics for Hamilton has been acclaimed as a pop culture phenomenon since its 2015 Broadway premiere. It earned the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for a record 16 Tony Awards and won 11, including Miranda’s first win for the Best Book of a Musical. The Hamilton cast recording spent 10 weeks atop Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart and became the 11th-biggest album of the 2010s. The Hamilton Mixtape, a cover album by Miranda, further reached number one on the Billboard 200. Miranda has written original Oscar-nominated songs for the studio and wrote the story and music for Encanto – a widespread critical and commercial success. Tickets for In the Heights are available from seafordcinema.org, from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street or on the door. Buy one or treat the family and you should have a great Saturday night out knowing you are giving a much-needed boost to TYCP and its work for the town’s young people. How to Successfully Handle Offers on Your Property A common question we get asked from homeowners selling a home with us: How should I respond to offers? Below are five pointers on what you need to consider when deciding whether it’s an offer too good to refuse or one walk to walk away from. Firstly, an accurately priced and well-marketed property usually gets offers quickly. The ideal scenario is that people want your property so much they offer the asking price. In this current market, this is often the case, as demand for homes in Seaford is outstripping supply. If buyers compete for your property, this will drive the price up even more. However, there are five factors to consider, aside from which buyer is willing to pay the most. 1. Their Situation – a good agent will give you as much information as possible about the people making the offer. Do they have a property to sell? Would they be in a chain if they did? 2 Their Finances – do they have a mortgage offer already approved? The ideal buyer is a cash one, but these are rare. This ‘money already there’ scenario often sees the whole process take far less time to complete.

potential buyer the way you like to be treated. A little respect goes a long way with both parties involved. 4 The Offer – the ‘offer’ part of the property process is where a good estate agent proves their value. You should have a relationship with them which means you are in constant contact, and feel informed of what’s happening. They are negotiating on YOUR behalf. 5 From Sale to Sold – accepting an offer is just another part of the process, and there are a few more hurdles to overcome in terms of surveys and conveyancing. But, again, a good estate agent will help you navigate through, from selling to sold. Thanks for reading, Stephen and Andrew Serving sellers and buyers in Seaford since 1987

Seaford Little Theatre

Private Lives

Book group members may be familiar with reactions to a story that no-one has enjoyed; that it is still ridiculously easy to find fault with it even when well into the second glass of wine. Conversely it can be difficult to say anything worth listening to once everyone has agreed that it’s a good read. And so it was with Seaford Little Theatre’s production of Nöel Coward’s Private Lives. For once I find myself stuck for words because it was so well directed, cast, acted and designed.

Anyway, I’ll have a go and start with Mike Truman, who directed his first play as a student at the age of 17 with the help of acclaimed director and writer Mike Leigh, and has directed ever since. Under his control this production was slick, crisp and very, very funny. It could have been subtitled The Truman Show because his wife Sandy, with whom he now runs a theatrical production company, was artistic director of a touring theatre company for five years. Having played roles from Chekhov to Ayckbourn, Sandy’s professional experience shone in her first part for the drama society, as the shrewish Amanda Prynne, a character to which she gave energetic physicality, throwing herself on and off sofas and laps but, most of all, displaying a great facility for rapid-fire delivery with wit and great timing. Lesley Drew as Sybil Chase, Jon Terry as Elyot Chase and David Hallett as Victor Prynne are no slouches when it comes to appearances on the Little Theatre

80

stage and elsewhere, and Drew was a match for Truman in her delivery of Coward’s weedling but overtly bossy lines in this implausible story about the consequences of two sets of honeymooners with a former husband and wife from each staying in the same hotel and then running away to the same Paris flat. Terry is another pro the theatre is lucky to have – since Lockdown he has taken a show up to the Edinburgh Fringe and performed in several productions in Brighton and Lewes – and as something of a Lothario to Sandy Truman’s impulsive Amanda, set her sparks shooting off in all directions as he provoked her to raging jealousy while insincerely rekindling their former relationship. Hallett has worked with the Trumans in their Bryteye Productions company and was a great fit for the more conventional Victor. These four parts were individually captivating in what would be a pointless play if acted without the verve that Coward’s sharp and paced lines require. Of course there has to be a maid to balance the decadence of the 1930s and Margaret Kennedy had a great cameo role as Louise, delivering her lines in beautifully accented French but in a style reminiscent of Acorn Antiques’ Mrs Overall. As for the set, Mike Truman transported us to the brittle Art Deco with aplomb and lots of cushions to hurl. Judging by the laughter and applause we all adored this production. Andrea Hargreaves Photos by Andrew Parkinson Top photo l-r: David Hallet; Lesley Drew; Sandy Truman and Jon Terry.

Lots happening at Seaford Museum in April! Spring at last, and our first break of the year in the form of the long Easter Weekend. April will be a busy month for the Museum as we have several events planned. On Friday 8th at 7.30pm, Monty Larkin will be delivering two fascinating illustrated talks; one on The Cuckmere Valley and a second on Exmoor Ponies. These will be at the Little Theatre in Steyne Road, Seaford. Entrance is £5, and just £2 for Museum members (another good reason to become a member!), payment on the door. Looking forward to May, the talk at the Little Theatre will be on Friday 13th, also at 7.30pm and will be

82

presented by Mairin Collearly – Overland to Mongolia at 70. For the youngsters, we have a day of special Easter Craft events on Wednesday 13th April from 11am. Crafts, painting and colouring, plus an Easter Egg hunt around the Museum. £3 per child (up to 10 years) accompanied by an adult. Pre-booking is essential via our website (www.seafordmuseum. co.uk) as places will be limited for this popular event. Easter weekend will hopefully bring us some good weather and the Museum will be open all four days from 11am to 4pm as you would expect. There will be another opportunity for visiting children to take part in a different Easter Egg hunt for a Creme Egg and chick: from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

If you haven’t visited the Museum for a while, do come again as there are a number of new exhibits to interest and intrigue you – whether you leave with an Easter egg or not!

For a change try Florence fennel. 3 Plant begonias inside, ready to go out in May. 3 Prune hardy fuchsia, hydrangea and forsythia. 88

It’s April and our garden views are a delight. It’s a busy month, but so rewarding to be out there gardening in milder weather with lighter evenings. No surprise then to hear that doctors are now prescribing gardening as part of their Social Prescribing, in an effort to help patients manage both physical and mental health issues. Any gardener will tell you how easy it is to happily

GOOSEBERRIES

A recent walk took me through Rodmell, where I purchased delicious, homemade gooseberry jam from a thatched cottage en route. But what has happened to gooseberries? In my childhood, gooseberry bushes were a regular garden feature, the fruit being used for tarts, crumbles and preserves. Gooseberries have been cultivated in the UK since at least the 15th century. From the 17th century they were extremely popular in the Midlands, Northern England and Scotland, where they grew well in the cool, moist climate. The 1700s – 1800s saw the rise of Gooseberry clubs and societies, where growers competed with new varieties bred to improve size, colour and flavour. This led Charles Darwin to comment that, ‘The most interesting point in the history of the gooseberry is the steady increase in the size of the fruit.’ After WW1 Gooseberry Societies declined, although a few remain to this day. They may return, as according to Alan Titchmarsh, gooseberries are one of the rising stars of the soft fruit patch. He recommends growing a dessert variety if you have room for only one, but cordon or standard trained will help out with space issues. Try Pax, a spineless, red dessert variety, or Invicta for a heavy cropping, traditional, green thorny variety, which is ready in June. Both are mildew resistant.

Spring cleaning to most of us might mean moving the furniture aside to vacuum behind it, but we in our garden at the Crouch were able to go several steps better, thanks to Coppard Plant Hire from Crowborough. When volunteer Jan mentioned to owner David that our classroom floor needed re-sanding, he dispatched Harvey to do a brilliant job. And volunteers Brian, Val and Phil revarnished the floor. Let’s hope that Harvey was able to take his eyes off the floor long enough to take in the spring delights emerging, with clumps of daffodils, crocuses and irises shrugging off recent rain, and coronilla a blaze of delicate yellow flowers in the dry garden. This latter contains a small circular pond which was playing watery host to three frogs (you have to look closely to spot the third!) who were doing what comes naturally (to frogs). Hopefully their union will spawn a battalion of froglets in due course. Well done James for being in the right place at the right time and capturing the act. Storm Eunice was remarkably kind to the garden, the only victim being a Daphne odora Aureomarginata’ Katie and Allison said they were trying to save it by taking cuttings, now being nurtured in the poly tunnel. Ever the realist, Allison commented: ‘It is a very fussy plant but we will give it a go.’ They were also considering propagating Melianthus cuttings

from the vigorous specimen in the Mediterranean garden whose long lower branches had started to produce roots where it touched the ground - nature’s own layering technique which effectively makes new plants. And now to upcycling. When Katie visited the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year she was very much taken with some planters made from pallets. She sent a picture of the planter to volunteers Brian and Val. Typical of them, it was a case of no sooner said than done, and now their own bespoke version is ready to display plants outside the classroom. They have lined it with a plastic mattress cover thanks to local furniture store VR Flowers and Son. Readers may have noticed that this piece begins and ends with gifts from supporters. It’s really great to have this proof that the wider community supports our all-embracing community garden – even the frogs. The Garden Team Photos from top: Brian and Val’s pallet was inspired by a gold-medal-winning original made by prisoners for Chelsea Flower Show; Polyanthus on the sales table; Coppard Plant Hire’s Harvey sands our classroom floor; Raindrops on an iris; Crocuses withstood some heavy showers; A pair of frogs spawning in the small pond.

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB At our meeting this month on 21st April Colin Whiteman will be talking to us about Seaford Head Flora and Fauna. Colin is an accomplished expert in his field and we are sure his talk will be fascinating to hear. Reflecting the theme of the afternoon, the competition will be A Seascape. At our February meeting we were entertained by a workshop with Gaenor Circus. Gaenor demonstrated how to make a bouquet holder from midelino sticks. This proved to be both interesting and challenging, and we all went home determined to master this new technique. In an attempt to show our endeavours to be more green, our competition was entitled

Look! No Oasis, and our members proved resourceful in their ideas of how to arrange their plant material using a variety of mechanics including pin holders, test tubes, moss and chicken wire. Looking ahead to our May meeting on the 19th, Susan Tausig will be demonstrating New Beginnings and our competition will be Green as Grass. We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for the year are £30 and visitors are always very welcome at £5 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or SueWard on 01323 894848 for further details.

Almost Instant

We have two new and exciting opportunities for singers and listeners. On Good Friday (15th April) we will be resuming our great tradition of an “Almost Instant” event. Anyone who knows the piece can come along and join us for the evening. Everyone (singer or listener) pays £5 towards a donation to the church’s chosen charity. This year we will be tackling Stainer’s Crucifixion. It’s a wonderful Victorian melodrama of a piece. It wallows in unashamed sentiment and emotion, which makes it wonderful to sing or listen to, but an easy target for ‘serious’ music critics. It includes several well known hymns and the beautiful and oft-sung anthem God So Loved the World. You can get a preview of this anthem at our Spring Concert on 2nd April – 7.30 at Seaford Baptist Church. It’s amongst the eclectic mix that we will be singing, from the classic choral to a particularly bawdy version of the folk and nursery favourite A Hunting We Will Go. Another highlight is the beautiful Nella Fantasia, originally

an orchestral piece Gabriel’s Oboe, written by Ennio Morricone for the 1960s’ film The Mission. Chiara Ferrau added Italian lyrics and it has been a great hit ever since. We are gradually reforming as a choir after two years of trepidation. Though still mustering only about half our number, we are making a pretty good sound, even through our masks (who would have thought that?). We have even added a few, very welcome new members and we are experiencing again just how good singing makes us feel.

Time to get out diaries:

2nd April: 7.30 at Seaford Baptist Church – Spring Concert. 15th April (Good Friday): 7pm at St Leonard’s Church – Almost Instant Stainer’s Crucifixion. Singers please come at 2pm for our Almost Instant rehearsal. We are planning even greater things for Summer, when we will be learning and performing Alexander L’Estrange’s Zimbe! with its traditional African songs set in Jazz style. Watch this space. Please join us. It’s good to be back.

Out and About with the

Seaford Natural History Society

You might have thought there was nothing to Gatwick other than one of Europe’s busiest airports, but you would be wrong. There is also a thriving Nature Reserve, home to Orchids, Pennyroyal, Owls and Nightingales, not to mention three species of fungi previously unknown to science. Perhaps we can find a fourth, as Seaford Natural History Society has been asked to help to produce a species list for the reserve! Gatwick is just one destination amongst the dozen walks the Society has planned for their Summer Walk programme this year. Another highlight will undoubtedly be a trip to Chichester Harbour, hosted by our friends in the local Wildlife Trust. Closer to home, another visit will take members to Court Lodge organic dairy farm to gain an appreciation of sustainable farming methods and conservation grazing – and perhaps taste some of the subsequent produce! The season begins with a fossil hunt in Hastings in May, and ends on the Downland slopes at Crowlink in September. Committee member Paul Baker said: ‘Seaford itself is a haven for wildlife, and local habitats won’t be ignored. Over the summer we will be visiting Seaford Head for bird migration, Tide Mills to see what can survive the harsh conditions of a shingle beach, and the ancient woodland of Arlington...and all our visits will be in the company of expert guides who will make sure we see everything there is to see. With a full programme of walks, wildlife survey work and dewpond renovation, a busy summer is in store,

Meridian Lacemakers Meridian Lacemakers meet on the 3rd Saturday of every month, (except December, when the date does change!) at the Meridian Centre, Peacehaven, in the AnZac Room, from 10am – 3.30pm. We are a friendly group of ladies who get together to make all types of bobbin lace, together with needle lace and tatted lace. We sometimes bring our crochet or knitting if we are tackling a project, and we have even been known to do a bit of cross stitch or other needle work! If you have ever wanted to have a go at bobbin lace, and it really isn’t as complicated as it looks, there are lots of us who would talk you through the basic stitches on our “have a go” lace pillow, and then help you further if you decide to join us. We can make coffee and tea in the adjacent kitchen, and you can either bring your own lunch or pop to the supermarket in the complex for a snack. Over the years we have enjoyed making various group items, which we display if we are demonstrating at different venues, and some have been entered

for competitions run by the Lace Guild, a national organisation promoting lace and lacemaking. Our latest entry, just recently completed, is for the triennial competition entitled Commonwealth, a Running Man wall hanging designed by one of our members. Our next meeting is on Saturday 16th April; just come along or contact Gail Ball on 01323 730552 if you would like us to have a beginner’s pillow ready and set up for you. OLD TOWN HALL TEA ROOM We at the Tea Room are getting ready for the spring season. Our landlords are hoping to give our building a spruce up on the outside as soon as there is a spell of dry weather, and our volunteers are giving our collection of cottage and novelty tea pots a dust and polish. When first-time visitors come in it isn’t always the history of the building that they ask about – initially it is often the tea pots that catch their eye. One of the most enjoyable things about volunteering in the Tea Room is welcoming new customers and being able to tell them about the age of the building, its history and its many incarnations, even if new visitors to the town don’t return for a few months or even a year or so, they often come back to see us. Whether it’s new customers or our loyal existing friends, we are always happy to greet them and to chat with them. Over the years we have got to know our regulars very well and their visits enrich our lives as we hope they do their’s. Our opening hours have not changed and are Monday to Saturday 10am to 1pm.

Trees for Seaford

Residents in a quiet Seaford road were surprised to see twenty people in bright yellow Hi-vis jackets gather at 10am on a chilly grey Sunday morning last month. They were a group from Trees for Seaford and brought tree loppers, pruning saws and huge empty bags. The group was there for a lesson and hands-on demonstration of how to prune trees from professional Keith Sacre. The first thing we learnt is that thinking about the shape of the trees along our streets is rather different from the approach we would take to trees in our gardens. The aim is to have trees with a long straight trunk without side branches, until the branches are above head height – or bus height. We looked together at a well-established tree, which many of us thought had grown into a lovely shape. When we looked more closely, several tall uprights were competing to be the main ‘leader’. We needed to choose the strongest and cut off a few feet from the top of the other competitor stems. All branches which were crossing over each other needed to be removed and some had rubbed against others, causing scarring. Slightly reluctantly the long loppers were put to good use – with our trained health and safety members watching carefully. The big bags were soon filling up with the trimmed off branches. They were taken away for recycling, but we’d love to find a better use for them if Seaford Scene readers have any better ideas! After an hour of debate (‘left a bit’, ‘no, not that one, the one higher up’) and lopping, the tree still had an attractive rounded shape, but its crown had been thinned out so that the key stems could grow more strongly. We were delighted

that the residents’ bird feeder still had its place. Many residents take good care of the trees outside their homes and we are very grateful for that. Keith took a trimmed-off branch and showed us how we should prune the young trees which the group has planted around Seaford – it’s better to trim them when they are easy to reach and when secateurs suffice. The group pruned several other trees of different species under Keith’s guidance. As the weather got colder and the gardening gloves came off, one of the other fully trained tree surgeons in the group offered coffee from the boot of his car!

TRUSTEES – Business Planning and Fundraising support Lewes District Citizens Advice is looking to recruit two volunteers to join our trustee board, which oversees the strategy and governance of our work across Lewes District. For one of these roles, we are hoping to find someone with knowledge of Business Planning and who could support this function. We are also looking for someone who has fundraising experience, who would help our District Manager to identify funds and make fundraising applications. If you would like to make a difference to your community, and work in an interesting environment then we would love to hear from you. We ask that you are able to commit a few hours a month to the bureau and are free to attend quarterly trustee meetings. For further information, please email districtmanager@lewesca.onmicrosoft.com or telephone 01273 007556 for an informal discussion and an application pack.

What is Emmett Muscle Therapy?

Emmett is a relatively new treatment developed by Ross Emmett in Australia. It relieves pain and discomfort, and can improve restricted mobility and poor circulation. Emmett is an excellent therapy for the treatment of conditions such as arthritis, sciatic pain, old injuries, fibromyalgia, and for patients awaiting knee replacements. It is a light-touch, non-manipulative method of releasing excessive muscle tension. It is not a cure, but a way of managing chronic or acute pain. My name is Hannah Staples, and I am a qualified Emmett practitioner living in Seaford. I treat patients in their own home, where they may be standing, seated or lying down as appropriate for the area being treated. I bring my own treatment table. Treatment is given either directly through

the skin, or is equally effective through light clothing, whichever is preferable for the patient. An introductory treatment is £25 in which I will treat the problem area. Any referred pain may need to be traced to its source. Follow-up treatments cost £50. The price is for one session of treatment and is not dependent on time, unless multiple areas are being dealt with. I first became aware of Emmett treatments in relation to horses and my original qualification was to treat horses and dogs, which I still do. Additional information can be found on the website www.emmett-uk.co.uk where I am listed as a practitioner under the BN25 postcode. My contact details are: Phone: 07710 162552 Email: hjdstaples@gmail.com Website: www.hamuscletherapy.com

February’s Seaford seafront walk was a great success, with around 20 people talking and strolling in good weather. Several new members came along, and we were delighted to be joined by two of our French twinning partners from Veules-les-Roses. Some of the group walked as far as the Museum, and some, enjoying the chance to meet up in person, continued the day with lunch at the sailing club.

Our early June event will be a quiz night in Alfriston on Thursday 2nd June. We hope to be visiting our lovely twin village of Veules-les-Roses on the Normandy coast in July, and hosting our French friends for their return visit to Sussex in September. New members are always welcome. There’s no need to speak French – our events and visits are planned so everyone can take part if they wish. Our membership secretary is Robert at rmorri1847@ aol.com.
