Welcome to the July issue of Seaford Scene. So, half the year has gone already and have we had a summer yet? Well, I still live in hope.

We definitely need some sunshine if the Olympics isn’t to be a wash out next month! Seriously though, it’s the best time of the year to be out, enjoying this beautiful world that we live in, so with that in mind why not visit some of the open gardens in Seaford as part of the Mayor’s Open Garden Trail and Seaford in Bloom? There are also outdoor theatre productions on at the Crouch gardens, summer fairs, a ‘Krazy Kite Day’ at the Martello Fields, ‘Seaford Family Fun Day’ at the Downs Leisure Centre and a ‘Big Wild Picnic at the Old Brickfield Site - details of all events are on the ‘What’s On’ pages, 90 - 91.

SEAFORD DiAMOND ONS jUBiLEE CELEBRATiONS Thousands of people enjoyed the Seaford Town Council Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at the Martello Fields, Seaford Seafront on Monday 4th June 2012.

The Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Linda Wallraven, was delighted to introduce the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field, to open the afternoon’s programme which included arena displays from dance schools Up The Tempo, Spoonys Streetdancers and the Nikki Bond Dance School, physical activity displays from Sama Karate, Zumba by Louise Cave and an excellent demonstration using crowd volunteers and resus dolls for resuscitation to the tune of 'Staying Alive' by the Seaford Lifeguards.

The morning started with a procession of community groups parading along the seafront, waving to the hundreds of spectators gathered along the route and accompanied by a flotilla of small sailing craft, moving alongside the procession in the sea. The Seaford Brownies, Lions and Lionesses, Air and Army Cadets, Musical Theatre, Bonfire Society, Seaford Twinning Association, Rotary Club and Dance Schools were just a few of those taking part in the parade, led by Mayor Wallraven, Young Mayor Amy Gough and Town Crier, Peter White.

Music was provided by the Officials, Seaford Rock and Jazz Orchestra, Seaford Silver Band, Seaford Musical Theatre and Juniors and the Archway Choirs during the day and other highlights included the Seaford Dog Rescue fun dog show, Fantastic 4 Flyball Team, Lionesses Fancy Dress Competition and Alfriston Maypole Dancers.

Daytime community stalls offered visitors tea and cake, Rotary 'Tavern In The Tent', free climbing wall and Punch and Judy show, fairground rides and much more. Town Clerk, Sam Shippen praised the efforts of the staff, volunteers and councillors in creating the biggest community event ever produced by Seaford Town Council, especially the efforts of Adam Briggs of Sussex Events Ltd and Ben King, Projects and Facilities Officer, who worked tirelessly to make the event a day to remember.

The weather was kind enough to brighten up for the afternoon and evening, allowing hundreds of people to stay and enjoy a music concert with performances by The Riffz, Raising Maisie, Juno, Jo Harman and Co and Mama's Gun - which was topped off by a laser show by Jo Allen of JPP Limited, set to music and the Seaford Bonfire Society set off the Jubilee Beacon to the backdrop of a beautiful full moon.

YOUNG CARERS & BRAvERY AWARD WiNNERS ATTEND SPECiAL DAY AT DRUSiLLAS PARk On Friday 8th June, five special young people attended a Winners’ Day at Drusillas Park after being recognised at the Seaford Young Mayor’s Awards. Amy Williams, Elin Waite, Nicole Allen and brothers Calum and Lewie Clifford all received awards for bravery or for their services as young carers.

Each of the winners received a prize from Gordon Burke, Trustee of the Keith Baker Charitable Trust who sponsored the Seaford Young Mayor’s awards evening.

The Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Linda Wallraven, and Young Mayor, Amy Gough, also attended the event to welcome the winners and observe the proceedings.

The children enjoyed a buffet lunch in Explorers Café Restaurant before each experiencing one of the zoo’s Animal Encounter sessions. Amy Williams, aged 8, was the first to undertake her experience feeding the zoo’s group of lemurs. Assisting Zoo Keeper Clare Morris, Amy received a behind the scenes tour before giving the furry favourites their lunchtime feed of sunflower seeds and grapes. Next 6-year-old Elin Waite fed the meerkats.

With the help of Zoo Keeper Sophie Leadbitter, Elin hung enrichment baskets around the enclosure filled with peanuts and straw providing her with the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with the nutty nibblers. The zoo’s four resident racoons then received an afternoon snack courtesy of 14-year-old Nicole Allen. Assisting Section Leader, Peter Holmes Nicole, received a tour of the off-show areas before delivering the hungry troops some of their favourite treats. Finally, Calum and Lewie Clifford rounded off the afternoon’s

encounters by feeding the penguins. Aged 11 and 12, the brothers attended the afternoon feed talk with Section Leader, Claudia Perryman and provided the zoo’s feathered residents with their afternoon fill of fish.

Amy Gough, Young Mayor of Seaford said: “What an amazing day for some truly phenomenal young people.

Getting up close and personal with the animals was an amazing experience for all the winners.”

Gordon Burke, Trustee of the Keith Baker Charitable Trust added: “Absolutely thrilled to be able to reward such deserving children, whose bravery has to be seen to be believed. We’ve all had a lovely day, thanks to Drusillas staff for entertaining us.”

iNNER WHEEL CLUB OF SEAFORD Our May Fair held on May 26th in St Leonard’s Church Hall, Seaford was a great success with a variety of stalls to choose from and our visitors were quick to take advantage of the goods on offer. As a result nearly £600 was raised in aid of the Chestnut Tree House Hospice.

The choice of charity at our May Fair is traditionally given to our outgoing President and Pauline Ruckes was very happy with the amount raised.

STAFFORD ROAD OPEN HOUSE ARTWAVE 2012 IS COMING! UNIQUE, CREATIVE AND AFFORDABLE are the buzz words for our Open House this year! Once again the Stafford Road Open House is in full preparation to present a stunning new exhibition of local art and hand-crafted gifts of the highest quality. We want our Open House to have a wow factor this year and to be so memorable that visitors will rush out and tell their friends about the many beautiful works of art and hand crafted gifts they saw and bought.

This year our house will have several new features. Each room will be ‘themed’ to better showcase our work. So for example, we will have a Gallery Room hung with fine art from several well-known local painters and a local printer who is new to Seaford. There will be two Photography Corners offering a choice of both traditional pictures and abstract photographic works of art. There will be an Aladdin’s Cave of Jewellery featuring three well known and well-loved local jewellers and a Textile Treasure Room with a cornucopia of hand-painted silks, felted jewellery, plus fabulous gifts made from recycled textiles as well as stunning upcycled clothes. Last but not least, the Ceramics Conservatory will showcase ceramics from two well-known Brighton based makers as well as wood turning and mosaics.

This Open House goes way beyond the traditional set up. Last year we had seated massage and a Rock n’ Roll shed in the garden as well as, of course, our delicious homemade cakes. This August we are putting up yet another gazebo and running workshops for both adults and children throughout the three weekends of the festival.

Our workshops will be varied and not all of them related to art. We will have silk painting, rag rug making, yoga and art for kids and Pilates tasters for adults! So come early to book early.

We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses for our event. Our eight sponsors, without whom we could not put on such a special event, are: David Jordan Estate Agents and Seaford Health Store who have helped fund our publicity efforts. Diella’s Restaurant, The Archway Seaford and Jaju Beans and Leaves (Rottingdean) will each showcase the work of our fine artists and photographers in their establishments before and during the festival. Sedici and Foam and Fabric have agreed to display our artists’ work in their shop windows during August and early September. Last but not least, Seaford School of Dancing are supporting us with the use of their fence for our banner, during the festival period. So keep an eye out for our work as you go out and about in Seaford.

As you can see, we are planning a great experience for visitors with a fantastic opportunity to buy both art and hand crafted gifts that cannot be purchased anywhere else in the world! Our house is warm, friendly, entry is free and parking is free and plentiful.

COMMEMORATivE GATE RESTORED FOR jUBiLEE A commemorative gate which was made for Her Majesty, the Queen’s Coronation has been restored in time for the Royal Diamond Jubilee weekend.

The gate in East Street, Seaford leads to the Crouch Gardens and was built and installed by local ironmongers, Berry Brothers, for the coronation in 1953. It has been painted matt-black and the lettering is picked out in gold. The work was paid for by the local branch of the Royal Society of St George.

The restoration was the idea of local historian, Kevin Gordon of Seaford Museum. Kevin said “The gate was looking a bit weather-worn and I thought it would be a good idea to repaint it to show how it looked when it was originally installed in 1953. My wife and I were able to repaint it before the Jubilee Weekend. I would like to thank the Seahaven branch of the Royal Society of St George for their sponsorship and also Seaford Town Council for giving their permission to do the work.”

BOOTS AND SADDLED (WiTH THE WEATHER)

Rotary Club of Seaford The first anniversary of the Rotary Club of Seaford’s Car Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs took place on Sunday May 20 with early dreary drizzle. We were somewhat surprised at reports that other boot fairs had been cancelled, but then we often have better weather along the coastal strip, so try us if your boot is closed!

However, it soon cleared to provide us all with some fine booting weather, and our many bargain hunters had their faith rewarded, snapping up the goodies on offer.

Although we had fewer stalls than last time the sun helped us have just as many customers as in April. So the sellers did well too. Our proceeds were over £300, destined for local charities and good causes, so that brought a large smile to our faces!

The Sunday 10th June Boot, Craft and Produce Fair came at a busy time, just after the Seaford Jubilee event on June 4 (which we also supported jointly with our friends Seaford Martello Rotary Club, running Tavern in the Tent). This Fair, the third of 2012, was the first where we tried to provide entertainment for children in the shape of a bouncy castle.

For the future this year, there are Sunday Boot, Craft & Produce Fairs at the Martello Fields in Seaford between 9am and 1pm on July 8th, August 12th, and September 16th. We will continue to increase the appeal of the fairs by adding other attractions, providing a fun day out for all the family. We plan to add a specialist Craft and Food

Included among the new venues is the lovely garden that won ‘Best Back Garden’ and ‘Best Overall Entry’ in the Seaford in Bloom 2011 Floral Competition. This is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the variety of plants and shrubs that thrive in a very windy seaside location growing in a varied selection of gardens which are very different in their size, style and content.

Throughout the afternoon, cream teas will be available at two of the nine gardens. Ashley Stephenson LVO will be on hand at one of the gardens between 1pm and 2pm to offer his expert gardening advice. For the first time, ‘The Bourne Chorus’ will be performing at The Barn between 3.30pm and 4pm.

Although there are several other Open Garden events taking place in and around Seaford during 2012, we hope that our event will once again be well supported, as it has been for the last 15 years. All the money raised from this event goes towards funding the floral displays in Seaford Town which this year have a main theme of red white and blue, marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Year.

There’s still time to enter the 2012 Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition! There should be something for everyone among the eight available categories: Best Front Garden; Best Back Garden; Best Container Garden; Best Hanging Basket (private); Best Hanging Basket (commercial); Best Street/Close/Row (min. of four adjacent houses); Best Commercial Premises; Best New Entry For example, just one hanging basket can be entered, and the entrant does not need to be present for the judging, as long as there is access for the judges to carry out their task on 10th July.

Entries should be submitted, with name, address and phone number, to Seaford in Bloom, 17 Sandore Road, Seaford, BN25 3PZ to arrive by 3rd July 2012.

Local band Dr Scardo have release their new video for the single ‘Leave us alone’ from their forthcoming album, filmed mostly in Seaford!

For those of you who were wondering why there were a film crew and loads of support people in April hanging around the town centre, the results can now be seen on the Dr Scardo Youtube channel - www.youtube.com/ drscardo - and it’s attracting great reviews.

Lead Singer Simon Scardanelli was a chart hit in the early ‘90s with BigBamBoo and with new band Dr Scardo is back with an album full of great new songs.

A chance encounter in a local Sussex pub two years ago led to Scardanelli saying those immortal Blues-Brothers words “We’re putting the band back together”. With fellow band member Si Early on board, the seeds were sown. Fast forward two years and James Stathatos (bass) and Alvaro Hurtado (drums) complete the band Dr Scardo.

MAYOR’S OPEN GARDEN TRAiL Now that Seaford Mayor, Cllr. Linda Wallraven, has picked up the gold chain of office for a second term, she can bask in the credit afforded her over the amount of money she raised for charity last year with the full support of Seaford residents. Her nominated charity, Waves, will receive over £6000!

Driftwood. Pomegranate have very generously funded all the printing costs for the event, so a massive thanks to them both.

Part of this money was raised when she asked Geoff Stonebanks to open his garden, Driftwood, last summer, at very short notice, as the Mayor’s Open Garden. So successful was the afternoon, raising £600 for Waves, that it spurred Geoff into suggesting to the Town Council an annual Open Garden event to raise money for the Mayor’s nominated charity each year! Thus was born the 1st annual Mayor’s Open Garden event which, this year, will take place on Sunday 8th July between 1pm and 6pm. The Mayor’s chosen charities are St James Trust and Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group, both based in Seaford.

All it needs now is a lovely day and for you to turn up and support the Mayor on the 8th July for these very worthy causes.

The gardens opening are, 9 Kingsmead; Cosy Cottage, 69 Firle Road; The Exchange Project, Crouch Gardens; Driftwood, 4 Marine Drive and 5 Coastguard Cottages, Geneva Rd in Newhaven. Tea, cakes and savoury items will be available at Driftwood & cold drinks and cake at Cosy Cottage. St James Trust will have a bric a brac stall at Cosy Cottage and be running a silent auction.

Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group will be at Driftwood and Andrea Wootten will be selling her Phoenix greeting cards at The Exchange.

In order to raise funds, Geoff has secured 5 gardens, 2 of which have never opened to the public before for this great new event for Seaford. Norman Baker will be on hand to open the trail at Driftwood at 1pm, along with Linda Wallraven.

The Garden Trail sponsors, Seaford businesses, Pomegranate and Ollivers, have really done the mayor’s event proud by contributing to the wonderful raffle prizes available on the day. 1st prize will be a £100 voucher for the winner to spend in Ollivers restaurant.

2nd prize will be three £20 vouchers for the winner to spend in Pomegranate on three separate visits and 3rd prize will be a vintage china garden decoration from

The next lecture will be on July 3rd when the Rev. Dr Andrew Mayes, who is an expert on Jerusalem, will tell us all about this fascinating place. Dr Mayes does guided tours of the Holy Land and we look forward to his talk. We are still trying to raise money for the church therefore we appreciate the large audiences we get, who buy tickets for these lectures.

September 4th is the last of this year’s lectures and we are delighted to have the well-known local author David Arscott. David writes books on Sussex villages and guides on how to get there. He will be selling and signing copies of his books.

HOBSON’S CHOiCE

Seaford Little Theatre’s production of Hobson’s Choice, directed by Stella Dench was well worth the ticket! An excellent adaptation that was carried admirably by Ann Mabey as Maggie Hobson, the delightful Roland Boorman as Willie Mossop and the humorous Douglas Wragg as Henry Hobson.

This comedy, set in Lancashire, is about wealthy shoeshop owner Henry Hobson and his three daughters Maggie, Alice (Jenny Humphries) and Vickey (Lindsey Hollege). Struggling with his daughters’ ‘uppishness’, Hobson is advised by Jim Heeler (Stephen Newberry) to have his daughters married however Hobson knows that Maggie, his eldest, is too valuable to his business to lose and declares she is past the marrying age and has been ‘shelved’. In retaliation headstrong Maggie decides she will marry the shy, uneducated but very skilled bootmaker Willie Mossop who will also bring business opportunites.

Maggie sets up a rival shoe-making business with Willie and is soon taking away many of Hobson’s customers. Hobson in the meantime takes to drinking heavily whilst his two daughters are left to run his business but not very well, realising that Maggie had a lot to do with the success of the business. Maggie begins tutoring Willie, encouraging him to develop his confidence and their relationship gains strength, leading to moments of tenderness interspersed with hardened northern humour - the terrified Willie finds comfort sucking his thumb in his bed in the living room, only to be dragged by the ear by Maggie to their wedding bed!

Hobson continues to drink heavily whilst his daughter Alice pursues a courtship with a young solicitor Albert Prosser (Chris Church) and Vickey with Fred Beenstock (Peter Barnes); meanwhile, his business declines further. To top it all, in a drunken stupor Hobson falls through an open cellar door at the ‘Moonrakers’ pub and is sued for trespassing! On

falling into despair and realizing that he has been ‘deserted by his daughters’, Dr MacFarlane (John Hamilton) is called to treat his illness. With very amusing exchanges between the two, the doctor diagnoses Hobson with depression and alcoholism and prescribes him a total abstinence from drinking and recommends that he gets Maggie back to save the business.

Maggie is invited by Hobson to tea and returns with Willie who by now is an educated and very confident businessman. Will proposes to Hobson a business partnership on condition that the business be named ‘Mossop and Hobson’. Due to his circumstances Hobson has no choice but to agree and the play ends happily with Maggie and her transformed husband Willie, clearly very much in love...ee bah gum!

A fine cast is completed by Mary Young (Mrs Hepworth), Dennis Picott (Timothy ‘Tubby’ Wadlow) and Wendy Picott (Ada Figgins). A classic play brilliantly performed, with excellent direction by Stella Dench. Full marks too for the costumes used by the cast and for the set designs (Alan Lade).

The All New Sunday Lunch Club Starting on Sunday 15th July, the All New Sunday Lunch Club will be opening its doors to all senior citizens in Seaford. This once-a-month get-together aims to bring older people in Seaford together, to get out of the house, to chat, socialise and make new friends over a delicious Sunday roast lunch, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

The Sunday roast and pudding is cooked by Steve Mitchell of Ab Fab Food, whose meals are superb - as I experienced. Each month, either roast beef, pork, lamb or chicken is served along with all the trimmings crunchy roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, home-made gravy and sauces, followed by a traditional pudding or sweet dessert - I had the sticky toffee pudding which was to die for! A glass of sherry starts the meal off and a wonderful Sunday lunch and social occasion is enjoyed by all. Special dietary requirements can be catered for.

As well as the meal, a raffle is held which helps to partfund the lunch.

OUT AND ABOUT WiTH SEAFORD NATURAL HiSTORY SOCiETY Nature can’t be relied on - in April we said that you could expect to see Hawthorn blossom (often called May) in April this far south but because of the weather it was well into May before most of it appeared. We are therefore writing this article at the end of May for the July issue of Seaford Scene with some caution. Again, it is based on the survey we did around High and Over and Cradle Valley last year – see our website at www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk for details.

There are so many wild flowers out at this time of the year that it is impossible to list them all but look out for wild basil, wild marjoram and honeysuckle and also for the red star thistle, which is locally common but rare elsewhere.You can also expect to see lots of moths and butterflies when the Seaford winds are not too strong.

The vivid scarlet spots of the Burnet Moth (below left) are striking and so too is the Marbled White, which looks a little like stained glass. The Speckled Wood and the Gatekeeper (below right) dancing around you (but always moving when you want to photograph them) are more muted but their rich browns are still very attractive.

The most exciting butterfly we saw last July was a White Admiral in Cradle Valley. Although they are known in Friston Forest this was apparently the first time one had been seen in this location.

Weather permitting, butterflies are the focus of our July walks on 10th and 24th July at Rowlands Wood and Bopeep respectively – see the listings for details. Seaford Natural History Society is a friendly informal group of people keen to learn about the plants, birds and insects of our local countryside. We welcome visitors and prospective new members on our walks which usually last about two and a half hours. We suggest that visitors make a £1 donation.

Maggie has lived in Seaford since 1989 and has been the Director of FSW for nearly five years. She has worked at the Royal Alex Hospital, Brighton and at Kings College Hospital in acute children’s surgery, as a Health Visitor in Hailsham and was Assistant Director for Children’s Services for the local Primary Care Trust. Maggie is a member of the Seaford Allotment Association, is married to Nick and has two dogs.

What do you most enjoy about your job? The variety of each day; working with a very dedicated staff team, meeting with our supporters, organising and running events, having the brilliant resource of Knowles Tooth Children’s Centre, but the best thing is working for an organisation that gets results and does positively change family lives.

What do you like best about Seaford? Its thriving community spirit; ‘Artwave’, Seaford in Bloom, Seaford Bonfire Society, the youngsters’ football tournament, the Exchange project and many more.

Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford and why? I love the walk between Cuckmere and Hope Gap on a summer’s evening when the wild flowers are in full bloom, it’s just beautiful.

What is your favourite song or piece of music?

LiviNG AT CUCkMERE HAvEN

Part 11

With the Summer Solstice on the horizon, Robb and I are really relishing these long days. Even when the skies are gloomy - as they have been a little too much lately – we still don’t have to light the candles until after 9pm. All this extra daylight gives us more time to get things done and we’ve both been busy with different projects.

This time of year brings the film crews too, and last week three crews were around and about Cuckmere Haven.

On Wednesday there was a fantastic silver Mercedes on the beach for a magazine shoot, looking entirely incongruous. Of course, just as the model was dressed in her best and teetering precariously across the stones in painfully high heels, the heavens opened! The poor crew were beside themselves. There’s not much mobile reception down here and they were all frantically trying to access the weather news on their phones. Someone managed, and the BBC cheerily promised sunshine at 5pm. Looking out at 4pm to moody grey skies and heavy rain, it seemed unlikely. The crew huddled hopefully in their huge Winnebago. At 5.01pm, the clouds cracked open and the sun bowled out merrily, as if to ask what all the fuss was about. The crew got their final shots with the cliffs glowing pink and gold, and the sea streaked with light.

The rain has brought out the snails. Seems we are running some kind of snail farm in our garden. The new inhabitants – from the delicately small to the glutinously huge – are enjoying a feast of greens. For a week, I was getting up at dawn to pick them off the vegetables, taking them to the grass opposite the house. But they soon made it clear that grass just wasn’t a good enough menu as they started trundling (can snails trundle?!) back to our garden in their droves. Now I pick them off as and when I can, and mostly watch in distress as they chomp their way through anything and everything. Luckily, we seem to have the most abundant garden. Even after gale force winds, when everything is black with wind burn, within a few days new green shoots appear.

For five gloriously sunny days, we went to visit friends in Suffolk. Our visit culminated in our friends’ wonderfully home-spun wedding, which took place in the motherof-the-groom’s cosy back garden. One rather lovely thing to have come of the recession is the number of

home-grown celebrations. The weddings we’ve been to recently seem to be less about flashing the cash and more about love and connection. They’re more likely to take place in a village hall or a back garden than a lavish but soulless hotel function room, and are all the better for it. More home-spun celebrations up and down the country for the Jubilee weekend – it was lovely to see all the decorations and home-made cakes everywhere. My friend even knitted bunting – now, that’s truly homespun! When we got home to Cuckmere, the garden had literally exploded. We had brassicas that were taller than me, like high rises for snails. A profusion of wild flowers covered every available surface. After a day of both of us tackling some of the grass overgrowth, we were still only half way there. But we both agree that part of the charm of the garden is its tendency to run wild (that’s our story and we’re sticking to it) and there’s nothing like wild flowers to lift the spirits as they burst into colour. Where are we supposed to plant our carrots though?!

I don’t think I’ve ever not succumbed to the post-holiday blues. But just coming through the gate at Cuckmere was like being given a massive hug by an old friend. The smell of the sea, the poppies waving wildly, all the kitties coming out to say hi. Coming back from holiday felt a bit like going on another holiday. I went out walking to see what had sprung up in our absence. Blowsy briar roses, oxeye daisies, buckthorn, woundwort, buttercups, bird’s foot trefoil, green alkanet…to name but a few. Yes, that’s me you’ve seen out clutching a well-worn wild flower book! I’m learning, slowly but surely, though I have to admit I’m better at admiring than identifying them. It’s exciting to watch the changing seasons though, especially now when every week something new seems to appear.

Seaford Musical Theatre Review

Seaford Musical Theatre put on an enjoyable production of ‘When the Lights Go On Again’ at the Barn Theatre from Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th June.

Elsie (Sue James) and Vera (Shar Turnbull) were as they gossiped with the ladies in the ration queue and later on in Act II in the cinema queue and over the garden wall. The school classroom scene provided excellent and amusing performances by the children from Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors whilst the camp concert had us rolling about in the aisles with the Sergeant Major (Steve Lewelyn) and his boys - men in drag and a saucy striptease, ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ sprung to mind!

Directed by Julie Terry, this was her directorial debut and she certainly proved she knew what she was doing.

The show revolved around the Parker family and the very amusing “It’s disgusting” Gran (Angie Wright) and how their lives were affected during World War 2, from rationing to gas masks, letter writing to loved ones, school concerts to dances on a Saturday night, air raids to Christmas - it was full of comedy one-liners interspersed with moments of sadness when the reality and tragedy of war hits home.

The cast sung enthusiastically throughout, with some lovely harmonies, strong duets and competent solo performances. The band led by Brett Welcome were excellent and came into their own with the Saturday Night Dance tunes, ‘In the Mood’ and ‘Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree’. The show ended triumphantly in the final scene as the Japanese surrender and the end of the war is celebrated in patriotic style at the street party. The audience join in again with ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘Rule Britannia’.

With well-known songs throughout, the audience joined in with many of the numbers; “White Cliffs of Dover’, ‘Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant Major’, ‘The Lambeth Walk’ and ‘We’ll Meet Again’, to name but a few. What a laugh

A most enjoyable and entertaining production that not only gave me an insight into life during the hard years of the war, but it also had me laughing, crying and singing along the way. Well done to everyone involved. Fran Tegg

SEAFORD kURLERS It is time again for the Seaford Kurlers to tell you about our recent events. Like the rest of the people in Seaford, we all enjoyed the recent beautiful, sunny days. Seaford Kurlers are still enjoying very good turnouts every week.

We must be doing something right! We had our Diamond Jubilee Party at the Downs Leisure Centre on Tuesday 29th Ma.y Chair man Keith Hylan ds and his wife (treasurer) Val. which was a fantastic success. The Wave Leisure staff were very professional and the catering staff prepared a really great spread. They are to be congratulated. Our Kurlers all turned up in red, white and blue outfits which was an excellent sight.

Our next event is the Seaford Fun Day at the Leisure Centre on 22nd July, 2012. Wave Leisure put on a fantastic day of family sports and events and there is always something for every age group - it all revolves around family and all age groups getting together. We shall be in the main sports hall to demonstrate the sport of New Age Kurling. If you have not seen the sport then please come along and give it a go.

SEAFORD OSTEOPATHiC CLiNiC CELEBRATES iTS OWN jUBiLEE In 1972 Seaford County Secondary School became a comprehensive and the Local Government Act was passed meaning Seaford ceased to be an Urban District Council and became part of Lewes District Council. 1972 was also the year that the now ubiquitous Banoffee Pie was invented at the Hungry Monk in Jevington. Seems like a long time ago? Well, that was the time that Seaford Osteopathic Clinic was first established by Mike Lemon.

In those days, osteopathy was a relatively unknown treatment form, so Seaford resident Mr Lemon was way ahead of the times. He was joined shortly afterwards

by Veronica Bower and Jane Riley, who established the successful chiropody clinic. Mrs Bower is still practising and has now been joined by podiatrist Julie Canning.

When Mr Lemon retired, the clinic passed to Mr Derrick Retief, and the present owner Mr Jitendra Vara took over in 1993.

SHiATSU MASSAGE AT HAvEN THERAPiES Shiatsu massage with Rose St John is now available at Haven Therapies clinic in Saxon Lane, Seaford.

What is Shiatsu massage you may well ask? Well, I went along to meet Rose and find out for myself.

Rose is a registered, fully insured practitioner and has been practising Shiatsu massage for over 20 years, having also trained in acupuncture and reflexology. She has a strong interest in natural remedies and has also studied meditation and tai chi.

Shiatsu massage is a holistic touch therapy which evolved in Japan and is based on the same principles as acupuncture but using hands instead of needles. It aims to balance the body’s energy system using gentle pressure on pathways in the body called meridians, through which energy flows. For many reasons this energy can be blocked and stops flowing easily and as a result can produce physical symptoms of illness and poor health as well as emotional, psychological or spiritual disharmony.

Shiatsu massage is suitable for adults and children and babies and it can help with many conditions including chronic neck and back pain, postural disorders, headaches, muscular and skeletal problems, digestive and respiratory complaints, high blood pressure, stress and depression, ME, the early onset of arthritis, labour and childbirth and many other disorders.

The treatment is non-invasive and the patient is fully clothed either lying on a futon on the floor, lying on a massage couch or sitting in a chair. Sessions last an hour with the initial session lasting longer to include a thorough consultation. The number of follow-up sessions varies depending on the client’s symptoms.

My treatment with Rose involved lying on a futon on the floor and prior to my massage, I had a consultation during which Rose asked about my current health and well-being. Rose explained that she treats all of her patients as individuals, concentrating on the person as a whole incorporating the wellness of the mind, body, spirit and emotions and how they connect, rather like a jigsaw puzzle! For me, the pressures of work deadlines along with aches in my right shoulder due to using a computer and lower back pain exacerbated by sitting at a desk for long hours and cycling were areas of concern.

Having been advised to wear loose clothing (jogging bottoms and a T-shirt) for comfort, I started by lying down on my back whilst Rose applied gentle pressure to

points on my head, shoulders and chest. Just lying down in a quiet room made me feel relaxed. I then laid on my front, with my head to one side and again using gentle pressure with her hands, - fingers, thumbs, palm - Rose touched various points across my body. Incredibly, I could instantly feel the tightness and deep pain around the shoulder area, hips and lower back. By holding her fingers on these points for what seemed like several minutes, the pain did subside somewhat. Then, lying on my back again, Rose focused on my back pain by using pressure points around my waist and down both legs. She worked on points on my feet, which helps to ground and relieve symptoms in the upper part of the body. She also asked me to do a deep breathing exercise using my diaphragm, which would help to strengthen my core muscles, which in turn would ease my lower back pain - clearly my breathing was shallow, possibly due to the cycling that I do, where I take in air using only the top part of my lungs.

By the end of the massage I felt very calm and relaxed and some of the stiffness in my shoulders and lower back seemed to have disappeared. Rose explained that although I may not feel the benefits immediately I could experience a good night’s sleep - funnily enough, I was aware I was yawning my head off all the way home...

Just 10 days before the Paralympic Games begin in London, the programme - running from 10am until 4pm - will include four sporting activities plus a buffet lunch. The activities will include wheelchair basketball, Kurling, Boccia and Wheelchair slalom. Seaford Kurlers and Lewes Boccia will be organising and running their respective activities and we are hoping to be able to recruit some wheelchair basketball coaches.

Wave Leisure Managing Director Peter Crowley said “We are thrilled to be able to host this event for another year and we hope to build on the great atmosphere of participation and competition that was generated last year.”

We are only able take a maximum of 40 participants on the day, and we would ask that participants must be accompanied by a carer at all times if required.

Running Commentary...

During the long and arduous preparations for this year’s Olympic Games, Lord Coe has talked regularly about inspiring the young to get involved in sport. It can begin by them simply watching sporting excellence on television as that can often trigger a desire to take up a new sport or make greater efforts in an existing pastime, and it is a fact that the Olympians of the future are today’s children. It is encouraging to know that most of our local sports clubs are attracting new, young members. The Seaford Striders, for instance, has a thriving junior section which fosters enjoyment of running while encouraging participation in events and over the course of time, some will progress to running with the seniors. As a result the Club now has a good number of talented teenage and early-20s runners. Not only does this bode well for the continuing success of the Striders, but also brings balance to a sport that is, at the moment, dominated by veteran-age runners. Most of the fun runs in Sussex have junior races attached, and theses act as excellent introductions into the world of ‘competitive’ running for young, budding athletes.

For newcomers (of all ages) to the sport of running, I would suggest that you make ‘enjoyment of running’ your guiding principle because it will help you to achieve more, and that you keep a record of every race you enter. Fortunately, I have kept a log of all the marathons and ultra-marathons that I’ve run in the last 35 years, recording the date, venue, finishing time and, in some cases, my finishing position. However, I haven’t been quite as organised with the 700 or so other races that I’ve done, and that’s something I deeply regret. Don’t wait until you’ve been running for a few years before you start to keep a diary of your running because it may be too late to recall the particular details of the races that you’ve done. Keep your results on your computer,

have hard copies in a folder and build up a scrap book of newspaper cuttings, photos and certificates. Then there’s the question of how you keep or display your medals, mugs and T-shirts which are often presented to all runners at races, the answer to which I’m still trying to solve.

When I began running (long before the running boom of the 80s) I didn’t realise that I was embarking on something that I would still be enjoying well into my 60s; meanwhile, my boxes of medals get heavier by the month!

The recommended event this month for those wanting a long race is the Bewl Water 15-miler, a superbly organised race round the reservoir. It sounds as though it would be a flat course but race organisers don’t think like that! In the last five miles there are some noticeable climbs from the reservoir path up to the finishing line in Wadhurst. For those preferring shorter races, there are Race For Life 5km events in Brighton, Worthing and Hastings, and a Sussex Grand Prix Series 5km in Bexhill.

jANE REEvES &THE ARCHWAY CHOiRS If you’re an avid reader of Seaford Scene, you should all be familiar with The Archway and the choirs that rehearse there - Gospelish, Contemporary and Glee, but who is the Musical Mistress behind them all? ... it’s the talented musician and singer Jane Reeves! Jane was born in London, and began her musical career playing the piano (to grade 7), clarinet, French horn and cello. She went on to become a piano and singing teacher and a touring singer with bands. During this time, Jane began writing musicals, and directing where possible, working with and appearing alongside artists such as Graham Norton and Brian Conley as well as writing an EP with Heather Peace.

In 2002 Jane studied at the (at the time) brand-new Brighton Institute of Modern Music and achieved a distinction in song writing and professional practice. A lot of work came out of this year and connections were forged, which still exist and support Jane’s work.

SEAFORD BOWLiNG CLUB Seaford Bowling Club held a Jubilee drive to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and everyone who attended dressed in the patriotic colours of red, white and blue. The weather in the morning was kind to us and by the time the bowling had finished at lunch time, the rain had started to pour. We all sat down to an enjoyable lunch followed by cake, which was decorated with the Union Jack along with a glass of bubbly to toast the Queen. A competition was held for the best-dressed lady and gent and this was won by Eve Crowley and Mike Gibbs.

After having children, Jane moved to Seaford and after noticing a dearth of contemporary music in the community?, Jane plotted to begin a choir, found premises and got going! After two and a half years of trading, there are now over 300 active members in six choirs from Seaford to Eastbourne with more choirs planned.

Jane arranges all her own vocal parts and uses her studio skills to professionally record them for her choirs to learn.

They are then reproduced on CD duplication machines which are all in-house and sold to the choirs. The studio also records professional vocal and acoustic demos for aspiring and established musicians. The Contemporary and Gospelish choir are now on Season seven, and between them have amassed a total of 80 songs and arrangements. The Glee choir (newly formed this year) is just finishing season one – this choir is fantastic for young people who enjoying singing and dancing at the same time – lots of energy and lots of fun and still only £5!!

Jane’s work at The Archway is made that much easier by the very fact that singing is just so good for you!!! So many studies have proved beyond a doubt that singing improves health, happiness and wellbeing. Being part of a group is like being part of a micro-community. It is supportive, engaging and fulfilling. Jane has an amazing talent for making people feel they can do anything, and the standard of their performances is testimony to what a group of people with no audition are capable of. Since starting The Archway, the choirs have helped to raise over £5,000 for various charities including, Pevensey Ward DGH, Family Support Work, Marie Curie, Waves and many others. Frozen Charlotte These are probably the smallest items in this series; they are two tiny china dolls called ‘Frozen Charlotte’. They are about half an inch tall and would have been used as charms in cakes.

The name comes about due an American folk tale written in 1843. Apparently young Charlotte refused to wear a coat when she went to a dance, travelling by sleigh ride one cold New Years Day. By the time she arrived at the ball she was frozen to death. The story became popular and was even set to music. The name is used for any small sold china doll, including ones which were used in doll’s houses. Many of them were made in Germany. I wonder if the dolls on display at Seaford Museum were ever baked into a cake?

BuYing PrOPertY in FranCe French house prices have dropped by more than 30% since 2008 and some areas now offer between three and four times more space for your money than South East England. Lush countryside, sandy beaches, rambling period properties and the short Channel hop home are among the attractions (not to mention the food). Yet British buyers must take care, as the French property system is very different to our own.

- Do your research. In France you don’t get the protection of standard searches before exchanging contracts. A motorway or sewage works could have already received planning permission near your new property and you wouldn’t be told about it. As well as investigating infrastructure, look out for unexplained gates or wells that suggest rights of way and research neighbourhood disputes, restrictive covenants and boundaries. Make the most of your contact with the vendors as they are obliged to answer questions truthfully.

- Be ready for a quick contract. In France buyers are expected to sign a contract as soon as a price is agreed. Contracts are usually drawn up by estate agents and they are legally binding. Check you’ve got let out clauses in case unexpected details are revealed down the line.

- Notaires are not solicitors. In France, although Notaires are self-employed like solicitors, they also act for the state to transfer deeds and collect taxes. One Notaire will usually deal with the whole transaction on behalf of both parties. They have a duty to act impartially, but only an

independent solicitor can be instructed to look after your interests alone.

- Find out the owners got planning permission for improvements to the property.

Investigate this before you sign the contract and satisfy yourself that permissions were obtained. Once you acquire the property you will be liable for any planning issues and problems that may arise when it comes to selling. Ask for copies of permissions and “declarations prealables” as well as bills from tradesmen and insurance as some building work comes with a 10-year guarantee in France.

- Understand French inheritance law. There are strict rules on who counts as a rightful heir, so individuals cannot simply choose who they want to leave their assets to. This causes particular difficulties for families with step-children. There are ways of mitigating the effects of these laws and these are well worth exploring before a property purchase as the options are more limited once the sale’s gone through.

re Horticultural or local Flower Shows dying off?

Most towns and villages in East Sussex still organise their own “show” each year and they do seem to be just as popular now as they were fifty years ago. The Annual Seaford Horticultural Show is probably one of the biggest and best in the county and pulls in many hundreds of visitors.

This year’s “Jubilee Show” is in the main hall at the Downs Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoon 4th August. It is open to the public from 1.30 to 4pm and entrance is free. These shows still attract visitors because of the wide variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables on the show bench. We also have domestic produce (cakes and jams), wines, photography, arts and crafts, flower arrangements, plus children’s entries. There’s something for all the family to see and admire. These shows are also popular with residents and members who enjoy the competitive side of exhibiting the results of their hard work. Gardening, including both the growing of beautiful flowers and

July should be one of the hottest months in the year and there is nothing better than sitting in the garden enjoying the cooling scent of herbs on the air.

Every garden should have a small herb patch preferably near to the door for easy access. Herbs prefer a sunny well- drained site but can be grown in containers or hanging baskets. They are usually left alone by pests and diseases, which seem to prefer other parts of the garden. When planning a herb garden choose herbs that you are likely to use in the kitchen such as mint, parsley, chives, sage, rosemary and basil. There are many to choose from so you need to check what space you have and what varieties you need. Place taller herbs at the back so as not to shade out smaller kinds. Be careful with invasive kinds such as mint and lemon balm. Harvest your herbs on a dry day when they are at their best. Most herbs can be preserved for winter use.

Preserve by freezing, drying, or use oil or butter. Alternatively make your own pot-pourri by mixing dried herbs with marigold, chamomile, dill or hyssop. Finally, get yourself a good herb book, which will give full instructions on growing and preserving these useful plants.

SEAFORD GARDENING CLUB Well, we have been experiencing some very fine weather over the past few weeks. I wonder how long it will last? It would be good to have some rain to water the parched ground and fill the water butts (preferably overnight!). Who said gardeners are never satisfied?

Members enjoyed their first half-day outing on 23rd May when we visited Riverhill Himalayan House and gardens near Sevenoaks. What an attractive place it was too, with the Riverhill Himalay an House and Ga rdens shady woodland areas sporting all colours of Rhododendrons, Azaleas and late Camellias and a new rose garden which included a bed of Diamond Jubilee species. More work is in progress there to develop a large rock garden and

herbaceous area. A short visit in the house was of interest to those who chose to see it and then 34 of us enjoyed a delicious cream tea before climbing back on board the coach, tired but happy with what we had seen.

There are still a few seats available on two more trips i.e. an afternoon visit to Latchetts Garden (full of surprises, variety and humour) on Wednesday 11th July or a full day trip to Clandon Park/House (near Guildford) on Sunday 9th September. Anyone interested in joining us, please phone Anne Silk on 01323 491331 - we do ask for an extra ÂŁ1 for coach fare for non-members please. We do not meet in July and August as we take a wellearned summer break. Full information regarding the September speaker, date and venue will also be in the August issue.

Holly, from Seaford, developed a passion for singing and acting at a young age, attending Seaford Head Community College and performing, singing in shows and attending talent competitions whenever she could. She then studied at Sussex Downs College in Lewes where she gained straight ‘A’s in Performing Arts and Dance A-Levels.

Holly went on to beat thousands of applicants, gaining a place at Drama School at London Arts Ed where she trained as an actor and spent her spare time singing and song writing. Since then she has been the lead in a short film called ‘Cracked’, is a dancer in rapper ‘Skeptas’ new music video and recently the lead in singer ‘Delilah’s music video. But singing and song writing is her passion.

“For me, there is nothing more amazing than getting all your thoughts down on paper, to then be developed into a song”, she explained.
