Located at the municipality of Quintana Roo off the coast of Cancún, with an area of 7.5 Km long and an average 500 meters wide, Mujeres Island is the place where every year snapper come to lay eggs in a definite season. It is during this event, called “Whale Shark Festival”, that these animals migrate to the region to feed on the spawn.

DESTINATION | Isla Mujeres - Mexican Caribbean | Text and photos: Kadu Pinheiro
The first notice of Isla Mujeres dates from the period between 564 and 1516 AD, mentioning it as a Mayan province, one of the four Mayan territories or provinces which formed today´s Quintana Roo State. By then Isla Mujeres wasn´t a town, but a sanctuary for the goddess Ixchel (the goddess of weaving, happiness, the Moon, abundance and medicine, among other virtues), and abundance it ensured, as the number of whale sharks in its waters surpasses any other place on Earth.

From Playa del Carmen, I drove to the marina in Cancún from which boats depart for the whale sharks tour. July and august are the months with more sightings, when one can spot up to 200 sharks in a single trip. But the season extends to September 15th, and the reason for this high concentration is the great quantity of plankton and snapper eggs, fodder for these animals which can reach 20 meters long. Only in this region and Ningaloo Reef in Australia is it possible to snorkel with great numbers of them. As I went at the end of the season, “only” 40 whale sharks were around for my enjoyment.

After the skipper checked with his colleagues (there are 80 boats licensed to take tourists) on the location of the whale sharks´ aggregation, we prepared to enter the water. Normally there is a rotation so that only two people at a time get in the water with them, but I was granted a special permission to be in the water at will given I was there to prepare this article and gather as many images as possible during the three hours of duration of the tour.

Meeting this magnificent creature, certainly listed as one of the highlights of any trip to Mexico, is unforgettable even for those who´ve had many opportunities to dive with them around the four corners of the world. Only the format of the activity is open to question; comparing it to what I believe to be the best way to exploit marine life, and even with specific rules and patterns to prevent harassing the animals too much, still there are hundreds of totally unprepared people in a frenzy “bothering” the animals. Something to reflect upon. At the end of the trip, the dive boat stops off a beach at Isla Mujeres and the skipper prepares a tasty shrimp ceviche, while everyone on board enjoy a dip in the sea, amazed at the experience just lived. Let´s know a little more about this animal with Gabriel Ganme and check the testimony of journalist Renata Maranhão:

Whale Sharks, the Gentle Giants Text: Gabriel Ganme and Renata Maranhão | Photos: Kadu Pinheiro
Let´s start this chat by talking about a fact that illustrates well the feelings this immense plankton filter arises in divers. During my latest cruise to the Galapagos in May this year we were able to see hammerhead sharks, several Galapagos sharks, schools of spotted eagle rays, sea lions, and the incredible sunfish, weird and very big. I left the dives mesmerized by those creatures. But we saw no whale sharks… not a single one. And the reader can bet that the crew´s moral wasn´t exactly top notch. It was as if we had lost the final soccer match at the Olympics, at the very last minute by erring on an easy head kick.
DIVEMAG International Dive Magazine

And then the pain Gabriel Ganme (your writer here) was there celebrating the sunfish, doing a pizza dance and all. But don´t get mistaken, reader: wherever whale shark sightings are deemed frequent, even as nature offer a spectacle the absence of this animal causes people to feel down.

And the anticipation is well founded. Getting to at least 15 meters long, Rhincodon typus is the largest fish in the ocean, and undertakes incredible migrations, basically searching for food. This animal is frequently around during the spawning of certain fish, algae blooms, always looking for a snack. After all this active filterer can, besides simply swimming with the mouth open filtering plankton, make lateral movements with the mouth, generating suction waves.

Its scientific name was actually altered by a writing error. Originally it was described as Rhiniodon, meaning denticles. Its small teeth do not seem to have much use, but inside its throat there is a grinder in a roto-rooter fashion to filter and grind the plankton. It is not rare to watch the creature doing a retrowash (to avoid saying pucking), expelling food scraps. The whale sharks belongs to the order Orectolobiformes, which main features are the mouth positioned well in front of the body and the eyes, which are generally small in proportion to the body. With two spineless dorsal fins, the order also encompasses some other members which are well-known to divers, such as the nurse shark, common along the Brazilian northeast, and the zebra shark (also called leopard shark in the Indian Ocean).

Animal Animal||Tubarão Whale Shark, baleiathe o Gigante Gentle Giant Gentil| |ByPor Gabriel Gabriel Ganme Ganme | Photos: | Fotos:Kadu KaduPinheiro Pinheiro Let´s take the whale shark profile below to identify the main anatomical structures of these sharks:
ESTA É A NOSSA REPUTAÇÃO, FAÇA DELA A SUA As opposed to several biting species, the whale shark does not have the famous nictitating membrane (which protects the eyes during attacks or contacts), but sports pretty eyelashes, which can be seen moving when divers get too close to its face, giving a false sensation of a wink. In an actual, factual way, whale sharks have two interactions with divers: indifference, not giving a darn thing for us, or uneasiness, when they usually detour and move away.

Animal Animal||Tubarão Whale Shark, baleiathe o Gigante Gentle Giant Gentil| |ByPor Gabriel Gabriel Ganme Ganme | Photos: | Fotos:Kadu KaduPinheiro Pinheiro By the way, in many sites where encounters are frequent, certain things should better be avoided. At Darwin´s Arch in the Galapagos the animals get easily pissed with your bubbles rolling on their bellies. And here´s another curiosity: in the so-called whale shark season, contrary to most sites where we meet this animal, it doesn´t get there for food, but hoping for the Galapagos sharks (C. galapagensis) to attack their remoras, which seem to bother them a lot. I have already seen an animal with some ten meters with more than 30 remoras attached to it, ruining the poor animal’s hydrodynamics. As our friend the Galapagos shark does not have the surest attack in the world, we often see bite marks in the fins of whale sharks. Very little is known about the species´ reproduction and virtually nothing about where do they give birth. Fecundation is internal, with the pair of claspers from the male penetrating the female´s cloacae. This apparently is of good result; a captured female had 300 embryos, with about 50 or 60 cm each, already near birth. And from this sad catch it was found that the species is ovoviviparous, with placental links. 300 at once? Seems mom actually releases its brood slowly. A way of giving the pups a better chance? Or is it better for the mother? Our gentle giant attains sexual maturity only around 30 years of age, and may live up to 100, if it doesn´t fall victim to ‘human animals’ before that.
25
Animal Animal||Tubarão Whale Shark, baleiathe o Gigante Gentle Giant Gentil| |ByPor Gabriel Gabriel Ganme Ganme | Photos: | Fotos:Kadu KaduPinheiro Pinheiro
Odd indeed – this animal with a life span akin to that of humans, being born with 50 cm and attaining 15 meters eating ‘veggies’, while we are born with the same 50 cm and rarely reach 2 meters, eating everything that we should (or not). With a considerable loss of its populations, being easily spotted from the surface and becoming therefore an easy target for fishermen who sell its fins for about a hundred US dollars per Kg, whale sharks are listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in the Red List of IUCN – World Conservation Union, which can be accessed at www.iucnredlist.org. There are several sites for whale shark encounters, especially Central America´s Pacific islands, Australia (Ningaloo Reef), Esatern coast of Africa, Maldives, and so on. That while the animal still exists.
In summary, I´ve had encounters with these animals a few times a year, for more than ten consecutive years, including in Brazilian territorial waters (St. Peter & St. Paul Rocks) and by now I should be jaded. But every time I visit this distant relative, my heartbeat soars, and my spearfishing fins (which I only use to swim faster) enter in convulsion mode. Just like our Editor, who upon seeing a beautiful specimen off Malpelo, didn´t blink at dropping his lunch half-eaten and jumping in the water without even thinking – without fins!

My first whale shark was at a Tokyo aquarium in 1992. Alas, there were two. In that giant tank I had a vague idea of what I could see in the ocean. Only 18 years later, already a diver, I was able to get closer to one of them again – this time in its natural habitat. As I learned more about these docile, endangered ocean giants, I fell in love. Then I heard about the “Whale Shark Festival” at Isla Mujeres and went to Mexico. Once a year there´s this great fish spawning event and all whale sharks in the region gather there, hence the “Festival”. One thing impressed me about those whale sharks there. I found them all to be rather small! They looked like youngsters, between five and eight meters. I thought I was in a whale shark nursery and was moved by the six-meter “shorties”. But several stories float around about those whale sharks. In one hand, it was said that with the depletion of tiger sharks in the region (which would eat whale shark pups) the giant guys bred at will, hence the large concentration of babies at Isla Mujeres. A “good” ecological imbalance. On the other, I knew they could vary in size according to the nutritional quality of the regional plankton. One lives to learn.
Foto: Noeli Ribeiro
I was producing material for TV and did some aerial footage from a helicopter. Having the coordinates the pilot located the whale sharks from above and I was moved to see so many together. They are solitary animals; you usually se one or two swimming together. There, I lost count of how many I could see. Knowing I was in the presence of a rare phenomenon made me feel special and I thanked God for it. Back to the ground I had one more day to swim with them. When I tried to follow one, another crossed my path and I could choose which one I wanted to swim with. These were very precious days, with plenty of spawn for the whale sharks and plenty of whale sharks for humans. As many other species of shark, the bigger among them is threatened with extinction. We must ponder over the high risk of extinction that the species faces in nature, in the open sea. If it continues like that, seeing whale sharks will only be possible in aquaria like the one in Tokyo.

UNESP RESEARCHERS FROM SÃO VICENTE FIND BLUE WHALE FOSSILS – SPECIES MAY HAVE BEEN AT THE IGUAPE REGION ABOUT 6,000 YEARS AGO AT LEAST The bones were buried in the sand, under the rubble of a house which went down due to beach erosion. The fossils – parts of the skull, scapulae and ribs – were found by a local resident, who alerted the Stratigraphy and Paleontology Laboratory of the university. According to paleontologist Francisco Buchmann, likely the whale stranded on an ancient beach, when sea level was much higher than today, and ended up being buried.
Este pode ser o seu próximo local de trabalho. Faça parte da família de profissionais PADI.
Its discovery was made possible due to the cyclical variation of the coastline due to erosion which happens at the Praia do Leste region. Buchmann explains that every 50 years on average the beach regresses about one kilometer and then comes back. The site is now experiencing this process. An analysis of Google Earth satellite images shows that between 2001 and 2010 some 700 meters of beach were already eroded by sea action.

The fossil rescue activities were completed in only ten days. In August 22 Buchmann did the first reconnaissance expedition to the site and an initial excavation, when he realized that the bones were covered by wood logs. He the summoned his students from the Marine Biology and Coastal Management course to help in the excavation, which was done in two parts.

Archeology| Blue Whale | By the Newsroom “We needed to be quick to make the most of the low tide. We had but a few hours before the water rose. When the skull was buried, it was safe, but if the sea broke over it while we were lifting it, it could all be destroyed, he said. While some in the team used shovel and hoe to build a barricade with sandbags to protect the remains from wave action, others dug using only their hands to avoid damage to the bones. The smaller ones were removed, but the skull was yet to come. In the moment the sea began to rise, a team of 25 people was able to lift it, leaving it hanging on a tripod, beyond the reach of waves. According to Buchmann, it is highly likely that this is an ancient whale and not an animal hunted when whaling was allowed in Brazil, in the 18th century, given the level where it was found. He explains that sea level has only been that high during the Holoce-

NAUI Mercosul hosted between August 14th and 19th its 16th Annual Instructors Meeting in Jundiaí, São Paulo State. The event was held at the NAUI Headquarters, in the pools of UniAnchieta and at the Serra Jundiaí Hotel. Almost 120 active members (NAUI Leaders) were present, with some 40 Dive Centers in attendance.

NAUI 2012
The six days of events were divided in two parts: the first three days were destined for instructor training in several specialties, during which many had the opportunity to update and add new training to their courses portfolio. The second part, during the last three days, was dedicated to debates, talks, workshops, round tables and gear and dive destinations exhibits, aiming at updating NAUI members about what´s on in the market nowadays. And, of course, these were days of fraternizing among old and new friends, as the NAUI meeting is a date not only to generate new businesses among members, but also to meet people and establish new relationships.

TOTAL SAFETY
DIVEMAG International Dive Magazine
The certifying agency is very proud of having one of the lowest accident records among its divers. Its motto is “Safety Through Education”, and for that reason at this 16th Meeting there were intense debates about the accidents which unfortunately have been growing in the market, including Brazilian divers, reinforcing the importance of training entirely geared towards the student´s safety. NAUI actions directed towards this issue during the Meeting included the updating and the course for new First Aid Instructors, and the updating and formation of new Rescue Specialist Instructors, at the UniAnchieta premises. Besides, there were specialty courses for Divers and Instructors on Recreational Wreck Diving, Wreck Penetration, and Intro to Tech NAUITEC.

Several of the talks held on Saturday, August 18th, were dedicated to safety, reinforcing NAUI`s commitment. Marine Biologist and NAUI pioneer in Brazil Vinicius Ribeiro, from Deep Blue - Rio de Janeiro, talked about the Brazilian Technical Norms for recreational diving, relating it to the profession of Dive Instructor. NAUI Instructor Alexandre Alves, one of the great Brazilian specialists in Large Dimension Risk Analysis, talked about emergency systems and plans for diving operations. And DAN, once again invited to the event, contributed to the debate with the theme “Why are so many dive accidents happening?”. Eduardo Vinhaes, Hyperbaric Physician and DAN and NAUI Instructor, coordinated the debate based on the numbers of the largest study undertaken by DAN, dated from 2010, about dive accidents. All these talks were full and interactivity about the issue was encouraged, Instructors being unanimous in their understanding of the need for ever safer training for their students.

SCIENTIFIC DIVING
DIVEMAG International Dive Magazine
Worldwide – and the Mercosul is no exception – NAUI is an agency committed to work with several universities and scientific research institutions. At last year´s meeting, the program to qualify NAUI Scientific Divers was introduced. In the current year, already as a result of the training´s practical effects, two talks showed some results and paths towards this type of diving, which uses recreational diving and tech diving techniques to train divers involved in research. Marine Biologist Fernando Gibran from the Federal University of the ABC, and the Director of Tupinambás Ecological Station, both NAUI divers, lectured about the project for Monitoring of the Alcatrazes Archipelago Through Scientific Diving.

MORE TALKS One of the new NAUI Facilities in Brazil, Caiman Scuba Dive, from Bonito, brought great images, while its owner and Instructor João Gomes da Silva explained about one of the most intruiguing dives in the world, that of Lagoa Misteriosa (Mystery Lagoon). Jesús Ortega from Mexico, representative of Hollis Company brand for Brazil and other Latin American countries, told the participants why rebreathers are becoming ever more accessible with the development of new technologies and reaching an ever wider array of divers, both recreational and tech. Saturday´s work was closed with a debate about the Shipwreck Diving Program as one more tool for Continued Education by the NAUI Instructors in Brazil.

SPONSORS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION
DIVEMAG International Dive Magazine
As has been happening since its first event, NAUI Mercosul counts on the active participation of important sponsors, service and products providers from the diving industry operating in Brazil. During the weekend of the 18th and 19th, in the same space used for the talks and round tables, there was an exhibit of tourism destinations and dive gear, where the Platinum sponsors showed their new releases. Infinity Sports, importer of Oceanic and Hollis brands, showed some new items through their representatives, focusing their efforts on the Prism2 Rebreather, “combined” with Jesús Ortega´s talk in one of the most sought after spaces of the exhibit. Sea Sub, the largest Brazilian importer of several famed brands, focused its exhibit mainly in already well-accepted gear from Scubapro and Mares. Leandro Antonicelli, Sea Sub´s technical consultant and salesman, talked to everyone about the advantages of selling these brands with higher aggregated value.
KS Esporte, which has Cressi as its spearhead, showed a very beautiful line of products with perfected colors and design, both from Cressi and the Princeton Tec flashlights, and exhibited a new line called Cetus, a company department aimed at lower cost products but also offering accessories which are often hard to find in the market, such as stainless carabiners. One of the import firm owners, Eduardo, coordinated his team in their attention to the public.

Aqualung Brazil also brought news in its line, showing Aqualung and Apeks products. Friday the 17th was dedicated to talks and training promoted by the sponsors, and through its representative Walter Nunez the brand offered information on how to become an “Aqualung Partner Center”, the advantages and visibility that a dive center accrues with this partnership. Their stand was well sought after by NAUI facilities owners seeking better understanding of this proposal.

Tourism was very well represented, with the two main operators in the Brazilian market also as Platinum sponsors. The Adventure Travel stand counted on the presence of the company´s owners, Amilton Diniz and Karin Siegrist. They focused on Colombia as a destination, in the liveaboard programs, and on Friday the 17th Amilton talked about Adventure´s work, its daily quest seeking better service, and about saba, a destination still mostly unknown to Brazilians but with dive features which enchant visitors, explaining to Instructors and dive center managers how to sell the package, both for individual sales and for groups. Arribatur on the other side brought a team led by Flavio Lara to talk about their international and national destinations, to do business with NAUI facilities and to consolidate its presence in the event. On Friday the 17th Reinaldo Alberti, Commercial Manager of the operator, did a workshop titled “Tourism Business in your Dive Business”, to qualify instructors and managers of dive businesses in best practices for selling dive travel and in the performance of the Dive Instructor as a travel guide, aiming at strengthening the dive center as a more efficient travel agency.

THE DIRECTOR SPEAKS Alvanir de Oliveira, aka “Jornada”, NAUI Mercosul Director, points to a consolidation of the Agency in Brazil and neighboring countries. In his own words: “Every year the Meeting has strengthening even further the bonds among NAUI leaders. The main concern, besides the fraternizing aspect, is that they can go back to their work places more qualified than when they came to the event, especially in the safety aspects of their courses and dive activities. This year we´ve had special moments spread over the Meeting days, such as the debate about recent dive accidents involving Brazilian divers, always reinforcing NAUI members´ commitment towards safety through learning. Looking towards the next year we have been working on training shipwreck divers, now that the materials for this specialty are ready and new Instructors were formed during the Meeting; and tech diving, mainly through the developing of rebreather courses, where the certifier still had not worked in Brazil, now however being committed towards this technique.

And quality control, which has always been and will continue to be a priority of the Agency in Mercosul, guaranteeing always a good training of divers, will continue to grow. Keeping this control, through various processes, which include the evaluation of NAUI courses and leaders by the students, will ensure that NAUI continues to grow, but always with quality criteria and not only in quantity of new divers and leaders.”

EVENT | 9th DAN COURSE ON DIVING MEDICINE | Text Reinaldo Alberti | Photos: Kadu Pinheiro e Irène Demetrescu
WHY IS THIS COURSE SO IMPORTANT?
Whoever works with diving, is a fan of the activity or intends to learn how to dive, will, at some stage, need information about medicine in relation to the dive practice. It might be something as simple as learning how to deal with an ear barotrauma or more rarely about the suspicion of a decompression illness. In these moments we all feel safer to call upon a doctor who is familiarized with diving and understands the importance of the activity for those who love it. What many people still don´t know is that health particulars related to diving are seldom treated during medical training or that of other health areas. This fact is not exclusive from Brazil, but repeats itself practically all over the world. That´s why the DAN organizations worldwide offer programs aimed at doctors and health, rescue and diving professionals, seeking to widen specialized knowledge and avoid unnecessary exposure to dive lesion risks or decompression accidents. DAN America has reached the 72nd edition of its course, and DAN Brazil has done its ninth edition of the Diving Medicine Course in Portuguese!
DIVEMAG International Dive Magazine
WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME FROM? The course was organized by two important divers, not by chance both doctors and dive instructors, Márcio Monteiro and Eduardo Vinhaes. Márcio, an Urologist specialized in Hyperbaric Medicine, is a member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society – UHMS, besides being a NAUI Course Director and DAN Instructor Trainer, having been invited in 1998 to participate in a similar DAN course done in Mexico, which arose his interest for the need of more colleagues (either physicians or dive instructors) to acquaint themselves with hyperbaric medicine in our country. He then contacted Eduardo to question about the lack of it in Brazil. Eduardo, a Pathologist, Thorax Surgeon, Hyperbaric and Diving Doctor, also a member of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society – UHMS – besides CMAS and NAUI dive instructor, had also participated of the 97th Meeting for the Evaluation of Risk Situations in Diving, in the end of the 1990´s, with attendance from Mexicans, Colombians, Venezuelans and himself from Brazil. Happy with Márcio´s challenge to undertake a course in Brazil, they started to mobilize to make it happen. Eduardo´s involvement was such that today he leads the first Postgrade in Hyperbaric Medicine in Portuguese. Márcio is directly responsible for the operation and management of the DAN Medicine Course in Brazil. From those initial conversations other, very productive actions sprung to benefit Brazilian divers, such as the DAN Hotline for Latin America, with Spanish and Portuguese speakers, implemented in 2001. Today Eduardo is the Contact Volunteer Doctor for Emergencies in Brazil, and Márcio is the Deputy Doctor for the same service. Today, DAN Brazil is a reality and the largest divers´ association in the world, with more than 300,000 members, has a presence in our country. The Course was planned over the same lines used for the United States and other countries. This international format is based on scientific knowledge, with doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists and nurses teaching professionals of their respective areas, besides professionals from rescue and diving. It always has an international guest – who is a DAN Hotline Coordinator physician in his country – and is consolidated in Brazil since 2003. Although we are talking about the “ninth” edition, there were already then courses, since one was done during the International Congress of the Brazilian Society of Hyperbaric Medicine (SBMH). Today the course is very well known and referred to by the SBMH, undertaken also during meetings of the Society.

THE RESULTS: DAN BRAZIL SPEAKS Sergio Viegas, DAN Brazil´s CEO, PADI Course Director and DAN Instructor Trainer, lists the principal direct benefits of the Course: 1. Direct rise in the number of doctors who are familiar with Diving Medicine. 2. A big improvement in the capacity of undertaking good medical exams for courses, with a very efficient selection, reducing or eliminating the chances for serious problems during the first dives of students from any course level. 3. It allows for the establishment of a contact network among physicians and dive instructors. 4. It is an opportunity for exchanging experiences between divers and the health sector in the face of the deficiencies from doctors practicing several specialties in relation to the physiology of diving. 5. Participating dive instructors deepened their knowledge of the subject, preventing problems or nominating specialists after the filling of the “medical requirements forms” during the enrollment of their students, and can also improve their teaching of dive techniques (such as equalization options for instance). Sergio is aware that critical mass is still out there to be attained, but points out that the Course and other actions by DAN are excellent tools to reach the Association´s goal – the prevention of accidents. Professionals who recognize this are very important, and the Course has this power.

THE RESULTS: SOME PARTICIPANTS FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS SPEAK (Divemag is grateful for these testimonies gathered by Journalist Luisa Baptista)
“This course should be mandatory to all Instructors, Otorhinolaryngologists, Pneumologists and Physicians in general! To me DAN has always been a safety service (an assistance plan) and not an information clearinghouse. Today I realize that it is much more than an accident safety service. It provides vital information which should be widespread among everyone in diving. I will be one more publicizing tool for DAN, with great pleasure and pride of you. Count on me always! Ignorance leads to serious dive accidents! I am proof – but still alive!” Adriana Hime (Physiotherapist and Diver)
“The Hyperbaric and Underwater Medicine Course by DAN is always very interesting. I had done the same edition of thos course in 2005, when I was a Divemaster. And today, after having done DAN courses and being a Dive Instructor and DAN Instructor, it is possible for me not only to update all my knowledge, but also to seek it in a more consolidated way in a relatively short period of time. It is a weekend immersion. The benefits come with the updating of this course, the consolidation of information and the certainty that for diving safely prevention and knowledge is the best way. It was really nice. The course was all-encompassing, allowing addressing the interaction between divers and the health community who sometimes ends up rescuing us either in a preventative or curative way, and to realize that divers should be more interested in prevention and in seeking safety always.” Mário Krüger (IANTD and PADI Dive Instructor)
“We know that the incidences of decompression sickness and decompression illnesses are very limited, but a rescue done wrong or an ill-directed treatment may bring serious injuries and even death of the victim. So all this understanding, the comprehension about illnesses and their causes and the dynamics of DAN´s functioning as a supporter in such a complex time is very important. The job of this course in building understanding for the professionals working directly in the area and also for doctors who might be attending to these cases is very important. Although the speakers were almost all doctors and the majority of the public being also of health professionals, the way the information was transmitted was really didactic, very well explained, so I believe that DAN already does this job in accordance with its objectives, namely to publicize this information to be understood by all participants. The course as a whole was very satisfactory, I understood all the themes as they were very well explained, my doubts were cleared and I am very satisfied and happy to go back to my State with this knowledge. We, firefighting officers, intend to come back next year for the course´s next edition. Also our presence here had this objective, our mission was to learn and take this knowledge further. We will take the information to our institution so that everyone understands the importance of us having this knowledge about diving illnesses and their prevention. It is our mission to get back to our institution in Espírito Santo and share what we learned”. Carlos Alberto Mendes de Souza (First Sergeant-Diver of the Firefighting Corps of Espírito Santo State)

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR THESE RESULTS TO LAST AND SPREAD
Incredibly the quantity pf health professionals is growing and in relation to that in courses done in other countries. As the course promotes great interactivity among professionals from the health and rescue area and dive instructors, it is vital that these later get involved in the course. All the instructors who participated in this and previous editions guarantee that it was one of the best update trainings in physiology and dive accidents they ever did, making them better educators, more knowledgeable about some of the anxieties and concerns of their students. Therefore, if you are a dive professional, find time for this; the course will continue to be held always between the second and third weeks of August, every year. Talk about this article with Instructor and Divemaster friends and take part. Help diving become safer!

NEXT DAN ACTIONS IN BRAZIL TO MAKE DIVING ALWAYS SAFER
DAN Brazil is striving to bring ever more information about safety for divers, physicians and dive professionals. In this regard, besides the 10th Medicine Course in Portuguese, in August 2013, DAN will organize in December 1st of this year the first Workshop on Dive Fatalities in Brazil. It will be held at the Quality Hotel Itupeva (Bandeirantes Highway, near the Hopi Hari park), from 8 AM to 5 PM, hosted by DAN Brazil reference doctors and international guests, including Chris Wachholz, a DAN America consultant, and Petar Denoble, organizer of the wider study ever undertaken by DAN about dive fatalities in the United States in 2010. The intended public are dive professionals, Divemasters and Instructors, tech divers and any diver willing to be better informed about safety in our activity. Seats are limited. LITTLE RIVER – FLORIDA CAVES Text and Photos: Kadu Pinheiro
Continuing with our series on Florida cave dives, we will talk a bit about Little River Springs, one of the most beautiful caves in Florida, with its golden walls, strong flow and peculiar formations being one of the caves which best caught my eye in terms of photography, due to its colors and difficulty in attaining the correct exposure. Little River and its copper-colored walls were one of the high moments of this expedition to me.

DIVEMAG Technical Dive
Little River is located in a public park, north of the town of Branford. To get there one should drive along US Highway 123 3.1 miles north of town, then turn left at 248 and proceed another 1.8 miles. Cave divers have free access to the cave; you just need to park your car, gear up and drop in the water. It´s one of the few caves which is not in a private site and has no actual diver entry and exit control in the cave. With long stairs and an entrance located at a small lake, it does not have any particular difficulty to access. It is however necessary to care not to leave any belongings unattended and in plain view inside the cars, as since you don´t pay any entrance fees the site has no security or control booth.
62
CAVE DIVE | LITTLE RIVER - FLORIDA | By: Kadu Pinheiro
63
The water flow gushes towards the cave entry (downstream) and directly into the Suwanee River. The cave has very clear, clean water, originating in the rains falling and being filtered by the calcareous soil of the region. When we dived, the flow wasn´t so strong and we were able to enjoy the dive without much effort at the entrance, planning and marking interest points to take photos on the way out.

During penetration in the cave it is possible to see marvelous calcareous formations, where in some places the air bubbles released by divers offer a show in itself, creating large mirrors in the ceiling.

It is a very technical cave, the main cable is in good condition and very visible but it is not a cave for novices; many accidents did happen in the past with cave divers and if you´re going alone and don´t known the region very well, do seek a local guide.

CAVE DIVE | LITTLE RIVER - FLORIDA | By: Kadu Pinheiro
Little River is formed by a main conduit, with some secondary jumps. At 270 meters of penetration we have the option to choose which conduit to we will follow: the Serpent or the Carousel, completing a circuit which goes back out to the main conduit. It is a groundwater formation cave, its walls being smooth and pointed creating interesting formations which, combined with the coppery tone of these walls, give the system a special touch.
CAVE DIVE | LITTLE RIVER - FLORIDA | By: Kadu Pinheiro
Much attention should be paid to the main cable, markings and water flow; the cave´s depth reaches 30 meters and keeps constant, and it isn´t difficult to enter deco mode as the conduits are very long. We used a decompression stage with O2 100% to accelerate our deco and even then did a dive with a total time of more than 2 ½ hours.

Canon anuncia novas câmeras compactas S110 e G15
S110 New model allows for capturing images with up to 12 megapixels and videos of up to 1080p. Whoever needs a good quality camera, light enough to be carried everywhere, will find a good option in the S110 (from Canon). The camera, announced during Phokina 2012, offers good resources for consumers, even without the heavy hardware of professional and semiprofessional cameras. Its design is similar to that of Canon S100, released last year. What really changed were some of the image capture resources, as now the camera has a CMOS high-sensitivity sensor to take pictures of up to 2.1 Megapixels. Other highlights are the 5x optical zoom and the possibility of Wi-Fi transfer of images to computers, without using cables. It is also worth noting that the Canon S110 has a high-speed system for sequential shots – up to 10 frames can be captured in just a second. Finally, it can record high definition videos reaching 1920x1080 pixel resolution. Reaching the market in October, they should be priced at US$ 449 (R$ 906).

HOLLIS NEO TEK SEMI-DRY SUIT Our Opinion: In our most recent expedition to the Mexican cenotes I had the pleasure to try the new semi-dry Neotek suit from Hollis. Among its many qualities, such as the integrated hood and the two side pockets, we still have the advantage of the frontal closing, dispensing with the need for buddy help to open and close the suit. Despite that I´d recommend that a hand be given anyways, as it allows for better adjustment of the internal neoprene. Built from the compression of resistant 8.7 and 6 mm neoprene (trunk, limbs and hood) besides an exclusive Hollis LavaSkin lining, this suit is very comfortable and elastic, allowing for ample, unrestricted movements. Its sewings are 100% sealed, an excellent alternative to a dry suit for tech diving in not so chilled waters. In long dives of almost three hours you still leave the water with some warmth. The frontal Glock zipper seemed to be rather resistant and not in need of so much care as the conventional metal zippers from other semi-dry models, and despite its simplicity the closing is smooth and sealing is perfect.

A WINDOW INTO THE UNDERWATER WORLD In 2010 I was invited by a school here in my own town to participate in a Science fair, to talk about diving and related things. I prepared a slide show with some 45 of my pictures, which aren´t that much when compared to those by my fellow photographers, but are useful to show nice things about the underwater world. I spent two hours talking about these 45 photos. It was really gratifying. In May of this year I was finishing my Masters and had a dream that I was giving a lecture with my images in the institution where I completed my high school, Dom Carlos Eduardo State School in Realeza, Paraná State – that in the past century. I followed that up by contacting the school board and proposed to talk to the children with my u/w photos. In the beginning the board was kind of wary but finally agreed when I explained that the objective was to stimulate the children to study further, even being in a public school, as I myself spent all my school and academic life in public schools – not that I´m such a great example but I think studying allowed me to dive in cool places and gather images to share with my friends.

I used a holiday in my home town (Ponta Grossa) and in August 26th when to Realeza to visit my mom Lourdes Cerutti and also give my talk. I had some 50 pictures and prepared it to last 50 minutes, and in the end I had to give the talk to three different groups, each one with some 120 kids, and each talk lasted about 90 minutes. These talks were really very gratifying as I met colleagues from the old times and was able to share the underwater world. Going back to my home town I evaluated the result and realized that I could show a much more impacting image set if I asked my photographer friends for a picture each; I sent them emails and got back 33 photos with details about the picture, site, date, curiosities and etc. I organized a new slide show and proposed it to Desafio school, where I had done the first talk at the Science fair – a lecture titled “A Window into the Underwater World – Great Brazilian Photographers”. It was a complete success, more than an hour and a half talking to the kids and I only stopped because the parents were already outside to pick them up.

As a photographer, I think our images should serve for something more than becoming a wallpaper in a computer screen; we should make a nobler use of it, and it´s a good thing to do environmental education with it. I intend to continue giving this talk in other schools.

O.R.C.A. FORCE MISSION IS A SUCCESS O.R.C.A. Force has successfully captured video footage and images of the Namibian seal slaughter at Cape Cross. Its team’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) departed after the seal clubbers arrived at the Cape fur seal reserve, just moments after dawn. “It felt like living a James Bond movie,” tells team member Dinielle Stöckigt, “launching a stealth UAV, flying it over an airspace that’s restricted during the slaughter, capturing footage and seeing that the Namibian navy, army, police, guards and sealers did not have a clue felt pretty amazing.” The team will now extract from their secure location and make its way to a neighboring country. “We’ve secured footage with very little means,” says O.R.C.A. Force Director Laurens de Groot. “We need to get the video out of the country so we can show the world what we did. If the Namibian Government won’t stop the seal slaughter that’s their choice, but Sea Shepherd will do anything it can to make sure that the rest of the world knows about the crime of crushing babies’ skulls for profit.” O.R.C.A. Force modified basic UAV equipment to reach their goals. Hostile weather conditions almost ruined the execution, but the exceptional skills of the team’s UAV flyers resulted in a successful mission. “Flying was horrible today,” explains “Mr. Biggles.” The low cloud base, filled with moisture, clogged our instruments. At one point I was making zero progress over ground, while my air speed was over 30 mph. Not having a visual on the aircraft, knowing it’s over water, that’s when you get slightly concerned,” he grins. “Nevertheless we got what we wanted, retrieved the aircraft and didn’t get caught. I can’t wait to come back here.” After this year’s experience, Sea Shepherd is determined to return to the Southern African country. “We achieved such a great result with a minimum amount of equipment. Our next goal is bringing unmanned aerial systems that can fly for hours,” says South African coordinator Rosie Kunneke. “Equipped with a high-tech video we’ll be able to record every step of the Namibian seal slaughter at Cape Cross — the second biggest tourist attraction in the country. From the moment the cruel clubbers step on the pristine beach to kill the nursing baby seals to the moment they leave the processing factory in Hentiesbaai, Sea Shepherd will stream the biggest slaughter of marine wildlife in the world to a global audience — all of them potential tourists. However, there is an alternative for Namibia: End the pointless seal slaughter. In that case Sea Shepherd will stream video of live seals, enjoying the protection of the Cape Cross seal reserve, just as is supposed to be the case in a reserve.

DIVEMAG: Tells a little bit about you and how
and when did you start to take underwater photos?
IMRAN: It all began when I was some six years
old, while I watched the National Geographic TV programs with my mother. We saw some divers and I remember calling them “frogmen”. I told my mom that I´d like to work with that, and as the majority of Asian parents would, she advised me against it. Naturally 11 years later, I certified as basic diver and as I was already taking pictures on land, underwater photography came naturally. My career in u/w photo began with a Nikonos III and I have been a professional for the last 14 years. I continue to love every moment of my journey.

DIVEMAG: Tell us about the beginning of your career and some of the best sites you´ve visited.
IMRAN: At that time it was very difficult,
I had no access to information and technology as we now have with internet. So all the research had to be done in the “hard way”, going to local libraries or through specialized magazines. A name that juts out in my mind until today is that of my mentor David Doubilet. Watching and learning with him I started to develop my abilities. Today, with information literally at your fingertips, learning and understanding photography is much easier and quicker. Some of the best places I´ve dived are Indonesia, in Raja Ampat and Komodo, which are among the top for me.

■ EMBOLIA ARTERIAL GASOSA (EAG)
