2024

Season Recap

If you went to a Sea Dogs game in 2024, you probably saw three things: top prospects, Slugger and a stadium full of fans. Last season, 395,461 fans caught a game at Hadlock Field and had a front row seat to some of Boston’s brightest stars.

Later known as the ‘Big Four,’ Red Sox top prospects Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel and Kristian Campbell took the Eastern League by storm, giving hope to Red Sox Nation about the future of the franchise. Mayer has been a familiar name to fans across New England. The Red Sox selected him as the fourth overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft and fans have been eagerly awaiting his arrival to Fenway Park. Despite missing part of the season due to injury, then a promotion to Worcester in August, Mayer had the fourth-most amount of doubles (28) in the Eastern League.

Roman Anthony continued his dominance at the Double-A level batting .269 through 84 games in 2024 with the Sea Dogs. Anthony smashed 15 home runs and 20 doubles while driving in 45 runs. He also showcased his speed with 16 stolen bases. Anthony displayed versatility in the outfield, playing all three outfield positions but primarily in center field. He finished the year with a .977 fielding percentage and committed only three errors in 132 total chances.

Kyle Teel was Portland’s full-time catcher before his promotion to Triple-A Worcester. Ranked as Boston’s number three prospect at the time, Teel had a standout month of May earning Eastern League Player of the Month honors. He slashed 357/.443/.560 and led the league in average (.357), RBI (22), and OPS (1.003) during the month and recorded nine multi-hit games and posted separate hitting streaks of seven and eight games throughout May. Teel was traded to the Chicago White Sox on December 11th with Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez in exchange for LHP Garrett Crochet.

2024 Season Recap

Kristian Campbell vaulted to the top of prospect lists after his incredible 2024 campaign. Across three levels, he hit .330 in 115 games with 32 doubles, 20 home runs, three triples and 77 RBI. He also displayed his speed around the basepaths with 24 stolen bases. Campbell was only caught eight times. Not only was Campbell excellent at his bat-to-ball skills, he was an incredibly patient hitter. He drew 74 walks, contributing to a .439 on-base percentage. Campbell played a variety of positions in both the infield and outfield. Fans saw him play second base, third base, shortstop, and centerfield while occasionally designated hitting. The accolades poured in after the conclusion of the season, including Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year, Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year, Minor League Baseball Hitting Prospect, Minor League Baseball Breakout Player of the Year, and Eastern League MVP to just name a few.

It wasn’t just about the offense in 2024. On the mound, Isaac Coffey and Hunter Dobbins dominated the level. Coffey, named Sea Dogs Pitcher of the Year, led Double-A in winning percentage (.733), ranked third in wins (11) and strikeouts (148), fourth in average (.215) and seventh in ERA (3.17). In the Eastern League, he led in strikeouts and winning percentage, was second in average, third in ERA and wins, and fifth in WHIP (1.23). Hunter Dobbins was another workhorse in Portland’s rotation throwing 105.0 innings allowing 37 earned runs on 90 hits while

(Continued from page 11)

walking 39 and striking out 98. He finished the season on a high note and recorded a 1.27 ERA in August, fanning 19 hitters in 21.1 innings pitched.

The Sea Dogs featured two new community nights honoring the victims of the tragedy that took place on October 25,2023 in Lewiston. They partnered with the Pine Tree Society and the Maine Association of the Deaf to host a Deaf & Hard of Hearing awareness night, presented by Yarmouth Audiology, wearing specialty jerseys that had “Sea Dogs” spelled out in American Sign Language (ASL). They were auctioned off to benefit the Pine Tree Society. The Pine Tree Society is Maine’s only not-for-profit sign language interpreting agency. It’s also where one of the victims of the Lewiston victims, Joshua Seal, worked as the Director of Interpreting Services. Sea Dogs will host another Deaf and Hard of Hearing awareness night on June 4, 2025.

On July 31st the Sea Dogs hosted Maine Strong night and the team wore specially designed Maine jerseys based on the original State of Maine flag. The back of the jersey had “Lewiston Strong” on the nameplate with an outline of the state of Maine on the jersey with a heart placed on Lewiston’s location. The jerseys were auctioned off to benefit the Lewiston/Auburn Response Fund, an organization addressing the current and emerging needs associated with the tragedy. With the Maine Community Fund as a conduit, 100% of every dollar donated was allocated to people impacted and the organizations that helped guide LewistonAuburn through the process of healing.

Players aren’t the only ones working their way to the major leagues one day, it is also the broadcasters. Sea Dogs broadcasters Emma Tiedemann and Rylee Pay each made their MLB debut on August 26, 2024 becoming the first female duo to ever call a Red Sox game. Tiedemann has been the Director of Broadcasting and play-by-play voice of the Sea Dogs since 2020 while Pay joined the organization as the Broadcast and Media Relations Assistant in 2023. They joined Dave O’Brien and Kevin Youkilis on a Monday night for the second game of a doubleheader that featured Danny Jansen becoming the first MLB player to play for two teams in the same game in the first game. They called play-by-play from the third inning until the end of the game, providing color analysis for all nine innings.

As the door closes on the 2024 season, there is plenty to look forward to in the upcoming season. Prospects such as Jhostynxon Garcia and Mikey Romero will dazzle on the field and the Sea Dogs will have plenty of promotions to entertain fans of all ages. The Sea Dogs are poised for even greater things ahead in 2025 and beyond!

CHAD EPPERSON MANAGER

Manager Chad Epperson will lead the team in his fourth season in Portland. In 2024, he led the Sea Dogs to a 78-60 record, the best record in the Northeast Division of the Eastern League, and third best in the league. In his fourth season with the team, he is tied for the longest serving manager in Sea Dogs history with Arnie Beyeler who managed Portland for four seasons from 2007 to 2010. Top Prospect Travis Bazzana

While Basallo’s overall surface numbers weren’t as eye-popping in 2024 as they were the year prior, struggling a bit in a small sample in his first taste of Triple-A, he still projects to be a very productive left-handed hitter. He hits the ball hard as consistently as anyone in the system and even had good exit velocities despite his tribulations with Norfolk. With strong hands and a simple setup, Basallo has a good approach at the plate, limiting strikeouts and drawing walks. He can get over-aggressive at times because of his knack for making contact, leading to higher chase rates, but he’s shown the ability to drive the ball with considerable power to all fields.

The franchise began as the Canton-Akron Indians in 1989 and then moved to Canal Park in Akron as the Aeros in 1997, then becoming the RubberDucks before the 2014 season. The new moniker represents the City of Akron’s companies and is still home to Goodyear and the Bridgestone/Firestone Technology Center. Fun Facts

Altoona’s popular Copa de la Diversión identity, will return for the 2025 season after making its debut last year. The “*Gold Fish”* will make six Tuesday appearances throughout the 2025 season, including April 15, May 13, June 10, July 1, August 19, and September 2. When deciding on an Altoona Curve Copa de la Diversión identity, “Peces Dorados” made the biggest splash. Translating to “Gold Fish,” this new colorful identity pays homage to a fan-favorite mascot in Curve, PA, Al Tuna.

On July 5, 1999, catcher Yamid Haad became the first Curve alum to reach the Majors, debuting with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The home of the Altoona Curve, Peoples Natural Gas Field, is modeled after a railroad roundhouse and seats 7,200 fans. The field’s Rail Kings Seats were ranked among ESPN’s Top Ten Seats in Minor League Baseball. The ballpark features the Skyliner roller coaster of Lakemont Park just past right field; the moniker represents one of the oldest amusement parks in America.

In November of 2024, the Baysox announced that the team’s official renaming to the Chesapeake Baysox during a special event at The Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis. The updated team name represents a new chapter in Baysox baseball, expanding the brand to better reflect the broad and diverse community of fans who support the team across the region. The Baysox will continue to play at their home, Prince George’s Stadium, in Bowie, Maryland.

Fun Facts

During the 2024 season, from Maryland alone, the Baysox welcomed fans from 378 zip codes across the state, representing all of Maryland’s 23 counties. Beyond Maryland, the team welcomed fans from 1,733 zip codes across 42 other states, totaling 2,111 zip codes from 43 states. To better reflect its remarkable regional draw, the Bowie-based team will now be known as the Chesapeake Baysox.

Camden Yards is just 27 miles away from Prince George’s Stadium. Bowie won its first Eastern League Championship in 2015, defeating the Reading Fightin Phils three games to two in the Championsip Series. Former Sea Dog Joe Gunkel, who was traded in the middle of the 2015 season, started the fifth and deciding game for Bowie. Top Prospect Jackson Jobe

Jackson Jobe set a career high with 91 2/3 innings last summer across three Minor League levels and debuted in the Majors on Sept. 25 before making a pair of postseason appearances out of the Tigers bullpen. The 6-foot-2 righty grabbed headlines when he touched 101.8 mph in a Spring Training game on March 12 - the highest velocity recorded by Statcast during 2024 Spring Training - and while he never quite got there again the rest of the year, his four-seamer remained a stellar pitch, typically sitting 95-97 mph with strong rise and run metrics. He can still crank it up to 99100 mph as he did during the postseason.

Alternate Identity Fauxback Game Jerseys

Fun Facts

In 2024 the Erie SeaWolves introduce a nostalgic fauxback alternate identity. It’s a blast from the pseudo-past that will make Sunday games at UPMC Park a journey back to a golden era of baseball.

The new identity, which imagines how the SeaWolves might have looked if the team had been founded earlier than 1995, takes inspiration from iconic unforms and logos from the 1930s through the 1960s. The players will don specially designed uniforms and caps, featuring a wolf logo that pays homage to classic animation and the SeaWolves’ brand of family fun.

South Portland, Maine native Charlie Furbush made five starts for the SeaWolves in 2010, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.24 ERA. In 1999, the SeaWolves joined the Double-A Eastern League as an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels. The SeaWolves were an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1995-1999 prior to the expansion of the Eastern League in 1999. The SeaWolves became an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels after moving to the Double-A level before becoming a Detroit Tigers affiliate in 2001. South Portland, Maine native Charlie Furbush made five starts for the SeaWolves in 2010, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.24 ERA. Along with the Pepperoni Balls alternate identity, the SeaWolves also take the field as the Erie Pinatas throughout the season as a part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversion initiative.

How To Keep Score

Looking for a great way to get closer to the action at Hadlock Field? Keep score using the scorecards on the next two pages!

Fielder’s

Stolen Base

Sacrifice

Strike Out

Called Out On Strikes

Base on Balls (Walk)

Intentional Base on Balls Double Play

Each defensive position is represented by a number 1-9, illustrated in the diagram above. Use the symbols in the table to the left to record what happens in each batter’s plate appearances. Use the position number to record which defensive player makes each out or error. If multiple defensive players touch the ball, write the position number of each player involved in the order that the players touched the ball. As the runner advances, fill in the basepaths to show how far he reached. If he scores, fill in the diamond.

In the example scorecard on the right, Benintendi leads off with a walk, and then steals second base. Devers then hits a home run, scoring Benintendi from second base. Chavis hits a ground ball to the shortstop, who throws it to the first baseman to record the first out. Mars hits a single, and De La Guerra grounds out to the third baseman, who starts a double play to end the inning. In the second inning, Bradley leads off with a double.

Top Prospect Dylan Crews

Crews finished his three-year spin at LSU with a lengthy resume that included the 2022 SEC Co-Player of the Year, the 2023 Golden Spikes Award and the 2023 College World Series title. His phenomenal junior campaign captured scouts’ attentions not only for posting gaudy numbers, but also for honing his plate discipline. The Nationals selected him second overall that July. Crews proved to be as advanced as expected in his first full season in 2024, hitting .270/.342/.451 with 13 homers and 25 steals in 100 games between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester and debuted in the Majors on Aug. 26.

Alternate Identity Playeros de Harrisburg

Fun Facts

The Harrisburg Senators partnered with MiLB’s Copa de la Diversión initiative to bring an alternate identity to life that honors local members of the Hispanic and Latino community. The Senators take the field throughout the season as the “Playeros” which roughly translates to “beachgoers”. The identity aims to emphasize the familial and community bonding that is often associated with going to the beach-a theme that is important to Hispanic culture. Harrisburg’s Playeros identity also highlights the team’s home on City Island by emphasizing a beach-themed rebrand.

The Senators have won nine league titles, four of which were won in consecutive order from 1996-1999. In August of 2007, the Sea Dogs scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and defeated the Harrisburg Senators 12-11 in front of a sold-out crowd of 34,746 fans at the first game the Sea Dogs ever played at Fenway Park. The Senators boast the league’s longest tenured identity. The region’s dense population of Mayflies inspired an alternate identity in 2007.

Top Prospect Chase Dollander

After one year at Georgia Southern to start his college career, Dollander transferred to Tennessee and was named the Southeastern Conference’s pitcher of the year in 2022, setting the stage for him to potentially go at the top of the 2023 Draft. His inconsistency as a junior kept that from happening, but he still went No. 9 to the Rockies and pitched his way to Double-A in his first full season with a trip to the Futures Game mixed in.

Alternate Identity Thunder Chickens

The Hartford Yard Goats Baseball Club announced that it will play a game as the Hartford Thunder Chickens during the upcoming season at Dunkin’ Park. The players will dress in the newly designed Thunder Chickens uniform jerseys and caps. The Thunder Chickens logo includes a turkey illuminated by a flash of lightning. The Thunder Chickens is one of two new alternate identities the Yard Goats will play as this season; the second identity will be the Leaf Peepers, in honor of the millions that travel to New England to enjoy the fall foliage. The Thunder Chicken is a nickname given to wild turkeys, because of the loud gobbling sound they make, which can be thunderous and guttural. Connecticut is home to a large and stable population of wild turkeys, an estimated 35,000 birds. It’s also a nickname for the ruffed grouse… a bird native to Connecticut.

Fun Facts

Portland set a new franchise record with 24 runs scored against the Yard Goats in the final game of the 2023 season at Hadlock Field. The Yard Goats don several alternate identities including a Copa de la Diversion identity called “Los Chivos de Hartford” which translates to “the Goats of Hartford”. The New Britain Rock Cats relocated to Hartford for the 2016 season. A Yard Goat is a serious workhorse locomotive that moves and shuffles cars from track to track. The team moniker honors the railroad history in Hartford. MLB Home Run Derby X made its U.S. debut at Dunkin’ Park in June of 2023.

Eastern League Northeast Divisionnew hampshire fisher cats

Toronto Blue Jays

Top Prospect Arjun Nimmala

Only 17 heading into the 2023 Draft, Nimmala drew tons of intrigue for his future projection and slotted in as No. 11 in MLB Pipeline’s rankings for the class. The Blue Jays selected him 20th overall, making him the highest first-generation Indian-American ever drafted in the four major sports. With short-season ball limited to the complex, Toronto faced a decision on where to open the shortstop in 2024 and chose Single-A Dunedin after his strong spring. Nimmala hit just .167 with a 34.4 percent strikeout rate through 29 games, and the organization did an in-season reset in mid-May. After he returned to the Florida State League on June 27, he took off with a .265/.331/.564 line and 13 homers in his final 53 games.

Alternate Identity Space Potatoes

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats launched their alternate identity, the New Hampshire Space Potatoes. With rooted history beyond baseball in New Hampshire, the Space Potatoes take the field for three nights in 2025, beginning Saturday, April 19 at Delta Dental Stadium. Much like the Manchester Chicken Tenders launch in 2022, the Space Potatoes identity is backed by the wide-ranging lore of firsts in New Hampshire. On top of being the state’s official vegetable since 2013, the white potato first found American soil in Londonderry (Derry), New Hampshire by early 18th century Scots Irish settlers.

The Fisher Cats mash the potato’s roots in New Hampshire with the infamous Barney & Betty Hill incident that occurred on Route 3 in New Hampshire’s White Mountains late in the summer of 1961, remarked as the first widely reported alien abduction in the United States.

Fun Facts

Manchester was home to the Yankees Double-A affiliate from 1969-1971. The most recent league for the Fisher Cats came in 2018 and featured MLB All-Stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, Santiago Espinal, and Jordan Espinal. Prior to the start of the 2017 season, the team announced a million-dollar stadium renovation that included tiered seating in left field, a music stage, a Tiki Bar, and a rock waterfall at the entrance.

Top Prospect Andrew Painter

One of the best high school arms in the 2021 Draft class, Painter looked like perhaps the best pitching prospect in the game during his first full season, reaching Double-A in 2022 and earning MLB Pipeline Pitching Prospect of the Year honors. His express train to the big leagues was derailed by an elbow injury and subsequent Tommy John surgery that kept him off a competitive mound for all of 2023 and 2024. His highly anticipated return to action in the Arizona Fall League last year did not disappoint, and there was little rust as the right-hander displayed his elite-level stuff over the course of six outings.

The Reading Fightin Phils, Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, are excited to announce that they’ll be playing as the Reading Flapjacks for the 22nd Annual Morning Game on Tuesday, September 9. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. against the Somerset Patriots. The R-Phils will continue the morning-game breakfast tradition as they played as the popular Cream Chipped Beef in 2024.

Fun Facts

They are the only brothers in Sea Dogs franchise history to have been teammates.Reading has been the AA affiliate of the Phillies since 1967 and is tied with the Lakeland Flying Tigers for the longest affiliation in all of Minor League Baseball.

Top Prospect Bryce Eldridge

Eldridge won USA Baseball’s Dick Case Award as its top player in 2022, when he starred as both a hitter and pitcher while winning a gold medal at the 18-and-under World Cup, and he was the best two-way talent in the 2023 Draft. An ankle injury limited him on the mound as a high school senior but didn’t stop him from leading Madison High School (Vienna, Va.) to its second state Class 6 title in three seasons. He earned top prospect honors in the High-A Northwest League and led all Minor League teenagers in homers (23) and slugging (.516) while ranking second in OPS (.885) and fifth in wRC+ (137).

Alternate Identity Ardillas Voladores de Richmond

Fun Facts

The Richmond Flying Squirrels partnered with MiLB’s Copa de la Diversión initiative to connect their popular aerobic mascot with the supporting Latin community. In 2010, the Flying Squirrels became known for their high-flying mascot which became highlighted through a Copa variation of the “Ardillas Voladores de Richmond”. The superhero image aims to amplify the legendary luchadors from Mexico and Latin America while tying in the traditional franchise branding. The Flying Squirrels take the field in these alternate jerseys every Friday to highlight the culture of their Latin community.

Richmond hosted Triple-A baseball from 1966-2008 as the International League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. In 2023, for the second consecutive year, the Richmond Flying Squirrels clinched a spot in the Eastern League Playoffs. It was the fourth postseason appearance for the team and the second time they reached the playoffs under manager Dennis Pelfrey.

New York Yankees

Top Prospect Jasson Dominguez

10 Patriots alumni made their MLB debut in 2023. Yankees legend and 1977 Cy Young Award Winner Sparky Lyle is their Manager Emeritus. Lyle managed the Somerset Patriots from 1998-2012. The Patriots don two alternate identity jerseys- the Zorros de Somerset which is Spanish for Somerset Foxes, along with the Jersey Diners. The Patriots will make their Jersey Diners debut at TD Bank Ballpark, hosting the Hartford Yard Goats on June 8. Additionally, the Patriots honor the New York Black Yankees, a professional Negros Leagues baseball team that was based in New York City, Paterson, New Jersey, and Rochester from 1932 to 1948 with a special jersey night to honor the historic team.

Alternate Identity Jersey Diners

The Somerset Patriots introduced a new alternate identity prior to the 2024 season, planning to take the field as the “Jersey Diners” for three games this season. Infamously known as the diner capital of the world, New Jersey is home to roughly 500 diners across the state. Believed to have originated in the late 1800s, diners were majority owned by Green-American immigrant families in the Jersey area. Due to the dense population of the Garden State, traditional Jersey diners are characterized by long, narrow buildings reflective of a railroad car. The diner represents an aspect of community within the Jersey area and is fondly associated with family and tradition. The retro moniker represents a rich aspect of New Jersey history and quickly gained widespread excitement across Minor League Baseball prior to the 2024 season. The logo was so popular, the Jersey Diners won Alternate Identity of the Year for MiLB Awards.

Fun Facts

The Rise of Kristian Campbell

Despite missing out on being on top prospect lists, Campbell ended the year as one of the most decorated players in Sea Dogs history.

When Kristian Campbell started his second professional season in 2024, few people could predict the meteoric rise that would take place over the course of the season. Despite missing out on being on top prospect lists, Campbell ended the year as one of the most decorated players in Sea Dogs history.

Campbell attended Georgia Tech after graduating from Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia. In his lone season with Georgia Tech, he hit .376 across 45 games with 16 doubles, four home runs and 24 RBI. Campbell

was already showing off his extreme patience at the plate and only struck out 17 times while drawing 29 walks in 217 plate appearances.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Red Sox, Campbell appeared in 22 games between the Florida Coast League and High-A Greenville Drive. He hit .309 with four doubles, two triples and one home run while driving in five runs.

The Red Sox assigned Campbell to start 2024 with the Drive again, but he did not stay long in Greenville. He started the year on a tear, batting .306 with 13 doubles and eight home runs through 40 games. He was promoted to Portland on June 4th and continued his dominance at the Double-A level. Campbell collected two hits in his Double-A debut against the Akron RubberDucks, then rode an eight-game hitting streak, highlighted by a four-hit performance on June 11th at Reading.

Campbell’s name became almost synonymous with ‘hitting streak.’ After his initial eight-game hitting streak when he was promoted, he would then go on to record two separate 13-game hit streaks and a 10-game hitting streak. Throughout his 56 games with the Sea Dogs, he did not record a hit

in the outfield, making incredible catches while being versatile enough to play multiple positions in the infield, also. His arm strength, paired with his quick reflexes, has made him a standout in the field.

Campbell’s primary position at Georgia Tech was

second base, third, left field, center field, and right field in addition to shortstop. He has turned 12 double plays at second base and 15 at shortstop, including eight total with the Sea Dogs. Out of 156 total chances with Portland last season, he only committed four errors, helping earn him Portland’s

Portland. A natural athlete, he became a reliable force

Campbell’s success immediately forced him into conversations about the future of the Boston Red Sox. At the time, fans were drooling over Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel donning them as the ‘Big Three’ but with Campbell’s undeniable raw talent, fans knew that he had to join the trio in some capacity.

With the departure of Teel to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for pitcher Garrett Crochet, the organization has a new ‘Big Three’ that has fans excited for the future of the organization.

It will only be a matter of time before Campbell is donning a Red Sox jersey. The only question would be

HALL OF FAME

CELEBRATES

ICHIRO’S ELECTION AND NEW YAKYU | BASEBALL EXHIBIT IN 2025

Ichiro Suzuki’s reverence for baseball history was evident from the first time he stepped onto the diamond in the major leagues.

But when Ichiro officially joined the legends in Cooperstown in January, the Hall of Fame took on a whole new meaning for the star who opened the doors for Japanese position players in MLB.

“I’ve been to the Hall of Fame seven times and every time I go, I feel so good,” Ichiro told reporters after learning he had earned Hall of Fame election on Jan. 21. “It’s like an at-home feeling. And so I always felt like guys should go to the Hall of Fame as an active player. That’s how I felt.”

Two days after he was elected, Ichiro made his eighth visit to the Hall of Fame. He toured the entire Museum, including the spot where his bronze plaque will hang and the floor where

the Museum’s new Yakyu | Baseball exhibit will debut in July.

“What an honor it is,” Ichiro said, “for me to be here as a Hall of Famer.”

The multifaceted impact of the cultural exchange of baseball between Japan and the United States will be celebrated in the new exhibit opening at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this summer as Ichiro prepares for his Hall of Fame induction. Yakyu | Baseball: The Transpacific Exchange of the Game will explore the longstanding exchange of teams and players in the more than 150 years since baseball was introduced to Japan. The exhibit, which is scheduled to open in July just prior to the July 25-28 Induction Weekend, will feature artifacts and stories about a game that became the most popular sport in Japan less than 50 years after the United States and Japan established diplomatic relations.

The exhibit is made possible by Guggenheim Partners, a global investment and advisory firm, with additional support from Peter O’Malley, former Los Angeles Dodgers owner and son of Hall of Fame executive Walter O’Malley. The exhibit will be housed in the newly created Guggenheim Gallery.

The exhibit will open during a year when Ichiro becomes the first Japanese-born player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Among the many legends highlighted in the exhibit, Ichiro is one of three players – along with current and former Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani and Hideo Nomo– who will be centerpieces of stories that will explore how the countries have connected through their shared love of baseball.

Artifacts representing Ichiro scheduled to be included in the exhibit include his batting gloves, wristbands, and elbow guards from his record-setting 261st and 262nd hits in 2004; his Team Japan batting helmet from the 2006 World Baseball Classic; his Mariners jersey from 2009 when he recorded his 200th hit for a record-breaking ninth consecutive season; and his spikes from the 500th stolen base of his MLB career in 2016. Ichiro has generously donated dozens of artifacts, many of which are on display throughout the Museum, to the Hall of Fame throughout his illustrious career.

An exhibit dedicated to members of the Class of 2025, including Ichiro, will open this spring on the Museum’s second floor. The plaques for the newest Hall of Famers will be installed in the Museum following the July 27 Induction Ceremony in Cooperstown.

“Yakyu | Baseball will look at how baseball has served as a cultural bridge between two nations that have long been uniquely connected to baseball,” said Josh Rawitch, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “The exhibit will

explore the players who opened doors on both sides of the Pacific as well as fan interaction and historic perspective. We are grateful to Guggenheim Partners and Peter O’Malley for their support of this exhibit as we prepare to celebrate a memorable year in Cooperstown.”

The exhibit will cover more than 1,800 square feet of space on the Museum’s third floor and feature four aspects of the transpacific exchange of baseball:

• Japanese teams touring America, including tours by the Waseda University Baseball Club and Keio University Baseball Club in the early 1900s

• American teams touring Japan, including the first trip in 1907 and the massively popular tour featuring Babe Ruth in 1934

• Players born in the United States playing in Japan, including Wally Yonamine, LeRon and Leon Lee, Matt Murton and many more

• Players born in Japan playing in the United States, including Kenichi Zenimura, Masanori Murakami, Hideo Nomo and the new wave of rising stars

“We are especially excited and honored to have partnered with numerous individuals and museums both in the United States and Japan in order to bring unique and rarely seen artifacts to Cooperstown for this special exhibition,” said RJ Lara, lead curator on Yakyu | Baseball. “Keio University, Waseda University, the Museum of Hanshin Koshien Stadium and the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Tokyo have been especially generous with their time and knowledge. The result will be a one-of-a-kind

experience for baseball fans on both sides of the Pacific.”

From Japanese stars like Sadaharu Oh and Eiji Sawamura to United States emissaries like Lefty O’Doul to some of today’s biggest superstars like Shohei Ohtani and Roki Sasaki, the United States and Japan’s shared love of baseball has spawned thousands of individual friendships and helped bring the nations together during times of peace, conflict, and reconciliation.

Wilson attended Kents Hill School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Civil War, he fought for the 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment against the Confederates in Louisiana. After the war, he was hired by the Japanese government as a foreign adviser to assist in the modernization of the Japanese education system after the Meiji Restoration. On February 2, 2025, the University of Southern Maine held an event honoring the legacy of Horace Wilson. The event was attended by Boston Red Sox Masataka Yoshida who visited the Gorham farmhouse where Horace Wilson was born and met the descendants of Wilson’s family.

MAINE CANDLEPINS

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2ND

Candlepin bowling is a variation of bowling that is unique to New England and the Canadian Maritime provinces. It’s been a popular sport amongst Mainers since the 1880’s. Candlepin bowling is played with a handheld-sized ball and tall, narrow pins that resemble candles, hence the name.

“Candlepin bowling is a beloved throw-back game for generations of Mainers, stated Sea Dogs President Geoff Iacuessa. It is as much a Maine staple as lobster, whoopie pies, and Moxie. We are excited to feature this unique variation of bowling for the generations of Mainers who have played the game and to introduce the sport to fans who might not be familiar with this form of bowling.

Maine Candlepins is presented by Big 20. The team will wear specially designed Maine Candlepin jerseys and hats as part of the night. The game will feature various bowling themed promotions. The jersey resembles a typical retro style bowling shirt. The back of the jersey features lane markings and the numbering is in the design of bowling pins. The right sleeve features a pair of socks in the design of bowling pins in a pair of bowling shoes that will remind fans of the Red Sox logo. The left sleeve features the Sea Dogs state of Maine logo. The hat logo was created by Sea Dogs staff member Kevyn Tibbott while the jersey was created by Ted Seavey from Seaboard Studios based in Scarborough, Maine.

Maine Whoopie Pies- June 6th

The Maine Whoopie Pies will return to action in 2024, presented by Trademark Federal Credit Union. The Maine Whoopie Pies made their debut at Hadlock Field in 2019. This will mark the fifth time the team has taken the field as the Whoopie Pies. The name change is in celebration of the official state treat of Maine: the whoopie pie!

In 2023 the Sea Dogs partnered with the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival and Wicked Whoopies to set a Guiness World Record at Delta Dental park for most consecutive whoopie pies in a continuous line with 2,129 whoopie pies.

Maine Bean Suppahs- June 21st

The Portland Sea Dogs will once again become the Maine Bean Suppahs, presented by Camden National Bank, for the Saturday, August 10th game when the Sea Dogs host the Altoona Curve at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field.

Bean suppers or suppahs for Mainers is a centuries-old New England tradition. Typically served on Saturday nights, bean suppahs have been a source for feeding and gathering communities at churches and grange halls throughout the state. A Maine bean suppah commonly includes baked beans served with franks…red snappers for Mainers, and brown bread.

Maine Red Snappers- July 5th

The Sea Dogs will kick off National Hot Dog Month and the Fourth of July holiday by transforming to the Maine Red Snappers on Monday, July 1st. The name change pays homage to Maine’s iconic red hot dog. Known for their bright red color and natural casing snap, Maine’s red snapper hot dogs are traditionally served in a split top New England style hot dog bun. The red hot dogs have been the go-to hot dog for many Mainers for over 100 years. We’ll have plenty of Red Snappers for fans to enjoy at the game.

Maine Lobster Bakes- September 5

Making their debut in 2024, the Sea Dogs will transform into the Maine Lobster Bakes, celebrating Maine’s most iconic food…lobster. Did you know that 90% of the country’s lobster supply comes from Maine? The state produces 100 million pounds of delicious lobster each year – caught by local fishermen who carry on the tradition. It is the state’s fourth largest industry. While there are 49 species of lobster in the world, it is the Maine lobster that is the most highly coveted species because of its sweet and tender meat. Additionally, Maine lobster has a less salty taste than other lobsters as a result of the cold-water temperatures of the Northeast.

CRASHING THE GLASS CEILING: Emma

Tiedemann and Rylee Pay Make History at Fenway Park

On August 26, 2024, two names entered baseball history books — Emma Tiedemann and Rylee Pay — becoming the first female duo to broadcast a Boston Red Sox game. Their historic broadcast at Fenway Park not only made waves in the sports world, but also served as a powerful testament to the strides being made in a traditionally maledominated industry.

For both Tiedemann and Pay, the moment had been years in the making. Tiedemann has been broadcasting since the age of 15, while Pay had worked with multiple summer collegiate teams before the Sea Dogs. Their hard work, talent, and passion for the game finally culminated in this defining moment, one that will have lasting impacts on the landscape of sports media. When it comes to a female voice on a Major League broadcast, the

list is not very long. On August 3, 1993, Gayle Gardner became the first woman to do televised playby-play of a baseball game when she called the action of a game between the Colorado Rockies and the Cincinnati Reds. In 2009, New York Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman became the first woman to work a World Series game from the broadcast booth. On July 2, 2015, Jenny Cavnar became the first woman to provide analysis for a series of National League games in the radio booth, filling in on KOA for the Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks. Melanie Newman joined the ranks in 2020 when she started broadcasting for the Baltimore Orioles on the radio. Waldman continues to be the fulltime analyst on the Yankees radio broadcast while Cavnar is the fulltime TV play-by-play broadcaster for the A’s.

The Journey to Fenway Tiedemann called her first game when she was 15 years old in Dallas, Texas. After that initial broadcast, she knew she wanted to be a playby-play broadcaster long term and immediately started broadcasting as many games as possible. She graduated high school having broadcasted basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and soccer for the University of Texas at Dallas, then went to attend college at the University of Missouri.

At Mizzou, Tiedemann accepted an internship with the Mat-Su Miners, a summer collegiate team in the Alaska Baseball League in 2014. During her time with the Miners, she fell in love with the daily grind of working in baseball and broadcasting a game almost every day of the week.

Emma and Rylee posing for a photo together on their MLB debut at Fenway Park.

After concluding the season in Alaska, she then joined the Medford Rogues (Great West League) from 2015-16 and broke into professional baseball with the St. Paul Saints in 2017. After two years with the Lexington Legends (Single-A Kansas City Royals) from 2018-2020, she joined the Sea Dogs in March of 2020 as the Director of Broadcasting. She has called every Sea Dogs game, home and on the road, ever since.

New Kid on the Block Rylee grew up in the desert, watching baseball games with her grandfather in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her interest in sportscasting was piqued watching Erin Andrews roam the sidelines at football games, and she decided to attend UNLV after high school.

It wasn’t until a summer with the Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod Baseball League that she tried her hand at play-by-play. Her mentors with the team suggested that she call a game and she immediately fell in love with it. She continued to broadcast Kettleers games and eventually decided to apply for the open Broadcast and Media Relations Assistant position with the Sea Dogs. Tiedemann and Pay teamed up for

their first broadcast together on April 6, 2023, forming just the second all-female booth in professional baseball history. After working together for an entire year, Pay took over the reins for the first half of the

Tiedemann and Pay had to wait for their historic game for another monumental moment in baseball history. Catcher Danny Jansen became the first player in MLB history to play for two teams in the same game. The June 26, 2024 game between the Blue Jays and the Red Sox was suspended due to rain in the second inning, with Jansen batting for the Blue Jays at the time. Jansen was then traded to

the Red Sox a month later. When the game resumed on August 26, Jansen, now a member of the Red Sox re-entered the game as the Red Sox’ catcher, with the Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho pinch-hitting in Jansen’s slot in the Blue Jays’ batting order. After Varsho struck out in the top half of the second inning, Jansen came to bat in the bottom half of the same inning, lining out to first base.

Once that part of the history books was written, it was time for Tiedemann and Pay to take the mic. They joined Dave O’Brien and former Sea Dog Kevin Youkilis for the nightcap. Originally, they were going to be doing play-by-play for the middle three innings but ended up doing the entire game. It was a night and an experience that neither will ever forget. Pay was even on the mic for a Jarren Duran home run.

Both Tiedemann and Pay’s careers are a testament to hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering love for the game of baseball. With their talents and trailblazing spirit, they will continue to inspire future generations of sports broadcasters, proving that there is no limit to what women can accomplish in sports media.

Tiedemann joined the Sea Dogs staff in March of 2020 as the Director of Broadcasting.
Pay joined the Sea Dogs staff in March of 2023. She returned for the 2024 season while Tiedemann was on maternity leave.

Sea Dogs Staff Spotlight:
