D i r e c t o r ’s N o t e s At times, we all find life’s challenges difficult to navigate alone. Sometimes we need help, which can come in many ways and in many forms. Sometimes it’s from a family member, a close friend, a co-worker or a counselor. Sometimes it’s from a complete stranger. And many times it comes from our furry friends. I mean, how many of us find great solace in our animal companions when we’ve just had too much of the outside world’s shenanigans? How many times have we confided our innermost secrets to those sweet faces? Oh, if they could only speak…we’d be in a lot of trouble. O’Reilly has written a beautiful and charming play about hope and companionship. What strikes me most is the honesty with which his characters speak. As they break the fourth wall throughout the production, I feel as if I’m a trusted friend lending an ear when it’s needed most. I’m compelled to share in a hug, a tear, and certainly a cup of tea and a biscuit. I am proud of this labor of love our company shares with you now. My hope is that as you observe these two lonely strangers crash into each other, you know that you are never alone and that even when life is toughest, a laugh can set the world aright. Sincerely, Christopher Williams

May 24 – June 16, 2024 Preview Performance: May 24 Opening Night: May 25

Becky is “bad.” Amelia is “good.” But in an unfair world, it isn’t always that simple…Two women— one born into privilege, another straight from the streets—attempt to navigate a society that punishes them for every misstep. Clever Becky’s not afraid to break the rules; soft-hearted Amelia’s scared to bend them. Both strive for what they want—but neither can thrive without the other. Through Becky and Amelia’s victories and losses, this thrilling, highly theatrical (im)morality play explores how flexible our morals can become when the wheel of fortune turns…Bold, wickedly funny, and shockingly relevant, Vanity Fair demands that we face our own hypocrisy. After all…who are we to judge? A brilliant adaptation of the classic novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. (CONTAINS ADULT SITUATIONS)

SETTING Dublin, Ireland. Modern day.

ABOUT At its core, Chapatti is storytelling. It is storytelling the Irish way – elaborate, with detail and nuance. Laughter and tears are an eyelash away from one another. Chapatti is a tale of two lonely hearts.

CONTENT ADVISORY This production contains adult themes and discussion of suicide. It’s not always obvious when someone is in pain. If you or someone you know may be thinking about suicide, it’s time to talk. Call the San Diego County Access and Crisis Line at (888) 724-7240. You are not alone.

GIVING BACK TO THE ARTS A law went into effect in 2020 (AB-5) that impacts the way theatres throughout California pay performers and production teams. As a result of this, plus inflation, our production costs have skyrocketed. Please consider making a donation or choose to sponsor one of our actors or crew members. Visit scrippsranchtheatre.org/donate for more information.

WHY WE DONATE TO SRT

Anne and I support Scripps Ranch Theatre because we believe that it is an outstanding gem in the Theater World of San Diego. I fell in love with theater while I was still in high school and college by acting and serving on the crew for most of those productions. When the opportunity arose for me to become the Executive Director of SRT, I was excited to take on that challenge and to be associated with an excellent theater company once again. The quality of the SRT productions meets the highest standard imaginable. The people who act, crew, or serve in various functions in the background at SRT are simply first-rate. I am continually in awe of the productions that reach the stage at SRT. Although I am no longer on the Board of SRT, I certainly want to help this local theater right in our backyard to survive and thrive. Any support provided by donors will make that happen!” – David and Anne McClure
