A Message from
Maureen Madden Head of School
Over the course of the last two years, the outpouring of support from the families, alumni, trustees, and friends of Seabury Hall has filled our hearts, lifted our spirits, and instilled in all of us a strong sense of hope and a belief that we would come out stronger after facing incredible challenges. When we re-opened our campus to in-person learning in August 2020, we were nervous and unsure of the journey ahead. Yet, at the same time, we were emboldened by the knowledge that there was an entire ‘ohana standing beside us and behind us knowing that our kids in class each day was the best decision for our students. With your help, we were able to increase on-campus safety by making testing and personal protective equipment available, along with enhancing our cleaning and sanitation procedures. Your generosity also ensured that every student with a scholarship continued to receive uninterrupted financial aid. Although some days were really tough, we managed to do some pretty amazing things during an uncertain time. So much has changed, much for the better, as we move forward. We have very good reasons to be hopeful about the future. No matter what we face in the next week, month, or year, we know that our school will continue to thrive because of the generosity of Seabury Hall’s ‘Ohana. Your trust and belief in our school has given us the opportunity to continue learning, creating, and inspiring one another every single day. I hope as you read this issue of ‘Ohana you will be encouraged by all of the good news coming from our campus. May it bring you the same sense of joy and hope it has brought to us. Warmly,
Maureen O. Madden Head of School

Excellence in Learning
Science Olympiad, Math Counts, TEDx, and CyberPatriot Throughout the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, students worked hard to improve their mastery of science, math, technology, and public speaking. Our Middle School Science Olympiad and Math Counts teams provided a world-class example of scholarly sportsmanship by winning 1st Place at the 2020 Regional Science Olympiad and 2020 Maui District competition, respectively. Seabury Hall's CyberPatriot teams also took some of the top spots at the 2021 state-wide competition, earning 2nd Place in the Hawai‘i State Platinum Division, and 1st and 2nd Place in the Hawai‘i State Middle School Division. In February 2021, students organized and hosted a TEDxYouth@SeaburyHall talk around the theme of "The Power of Knowledge: The Power of Learning, The Power of Habits, and the Power of Self-Awareness." Student speakers from Seabury Hall explored the many ways education could be implemented to benefit the community and improve a person's ability to understand themselves. The event also featured Malia Paulino, a Biomedical Sciences student at Northern Arizona University, whose TEDx talk advocated for teenagers experiencing battles with mental health. 5
A Sweet Escape
Students find healing through the practice of the fine arts
In the midst of an intensely challenging time and school year, Seabury Hall’s students found art playing a pivotal role in their quest for relief and rejuvenation. “I find art students tend to be resilient people in general, but this year art became a place of respite for them,” Fine Arts teacher Lenda McGehee said. “Many of my students escaped into their art as a way to take a break from the pressures of everyday life. It became a source of healing and restoration.” Much of the art produced throughout the year showcased the students' thoughts and perspectives on the pandemic and how it impacted their lives. “Interestingly, many students created pieces that either depicted nature and the idea of going back to the land or used their work as social critiques, attempting to right the scales of justice in terms of how blue-collar workers were viewed and treated,” said McGehee.

The Show Must Go On The joy of performance returns to the stage
Although many adjustments were made, students in Seabury Hall's Performing Arts Program brought their talents and passion to the stage once again. They transported us to new worlds through song, dance, music, and theater, and reminded us about the power of performing arts. "It is a deeply rewarding experience to continue working together toward a common goal," Dance Director David Ward said. "Obviously COVID-19 has changed the way we present everything in the performing arts. But the joy and creativity we are experiencing with our students is far more important. It remains a celebration of the human spirit, art, and the joy of performance!"

Spartan Athletes Shine in 2019-2020 Seabury Hall Teams Bring Home MIL and State Championship Titles The 2019-2020 athletic season was an exciting time for Spartan athletes. The dedication of students and coaches led to a historic school win, several MIL titles, and a State Championship title. In October 2019, the girls’ volleyball team defeated Molokai High School, winning the MIL Division II title and securing a spot in the State Championship, where they placed 4th overall. The following month, both the boys’ cross country team won the MIL Division II title and the girls’ cross country team won the MIL Division II title as well as the overall title. Both teams competed in the State Championship, hosted at Seabury Hall. There, the girls’ team placed 2nd and the boys’ team captured the State Championship Division II title. In January 2020, both the boys’ and mixed paddling teams clinched the MIL title at regatta No.4, held at Kahului Harbor. At the final regatta of the season, the girls’ team edged out King Kekaulike for first place, securing a sweep of the MIL titles and a spot at the State Championship in Honolulu. The boys' team took 7th place while the girls' team took 3rd and the mixed team placed 4th in the state. Then, in February 2020, both the boys' and girls' basketball teams won the 2019 MIL Division II title and went on to take 6th and 5th place respectively in the State Championship. In the same month – and for the first time in school history – the girls’ swim team became co-champions of the MIL Division II Championship, tying King Kekaulike at 54 points. 10

etsy was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of leader and supporter of our school. “Without Betsy Erdman, there would be no Seabury Hall. But her impact goes far beyond the gifts she gave,” Director of Advancement and alumna Kaimanamālie Lee ‘03 Brummel said. “Her generosity undeniably transformed our school but what truly made Betsy special was the way she unselfishly gave of her time, talent, and treasure. She was ‘all in,’ determined to ensure the students of Maui had the best educational opportunities available to them.”
pitched in wherever there was a need and Betsy was no exception. While pregnant with her son, Sumner, Betsy volunteered to be the coach of the swim team. “Unlike other people who give to certain parts of education, be it athletics, the arts, or academics, my mom believed in giving to all parts, recognizing that schools need all facets to help make it complete,” Sumner shared. He remembers how his mother set an example of educational philanthropy throughout his childhood and most of all, how she took the mission of Seabury Hall to heart by giving to “body, mind, and soul.”

He eventually became a major donor to the school in her honor. “Nobody worked harder for Seabury Hall than Betsy,” said fellow trustee, Zadoc Brown Jr. who remembers how inspiring it was to work alongside Betsy for over 30 years on the board. “She set the bar for leadership very high, but at the same time, she knew how to bring out the best in each of us. She was also unmatched in her ability to fundraise. You just could not say ‘no’ to Betsy!” A Legacy of Giving In addition to being one of the founding funders of the school, Betsy continued to be a donor to Seabury Hall for over half a century, making significant contributions to many of the school’s milestone endowments and facilities.
adult teams from all over the island continue to use it. In 2007, Betsy gave another lead gift for the ‘A‘ali‘ikūhonua Creative Arts Center. The center was named by kumu hula Keali‘i Reichel and in honor of Betsy’s husband Pardee. The name was chosen to evoke the tenacity of the indigenous ‘a‘ali‘i plant found throughout the Erdman land in ‘Ulupalakua. Keali‘i wrote, “‘A‘ali‘ikūhonua: The ‘a‘ali‘i that stands firm in the earth”. This name is in recognition of and admiration for the family who has endured many hardships yet remains firm and strong. The center was completed in 2012, and has since hosted many concerts, plays, musicals, and dance performances which routinely bring both the Seabury Hall community and the community at large together.
Throughout her lifetime, Betsy donated a total of over $10M to our school, but her generosity extended far beyond the bounds of our campus. Betsy supported numerous organizations, including the Maui Arts & In the 1980’s Betsy gave a gift to create a professional Cultural Center, the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center, development endowment, which enabled Seabury Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, Punahou School, Vassar Hall to attract some of the best faculty from across the College, and the American Red Cross. this opportunity to foster my growth as a teacher and serve the school’s community.” Betsy’s generosity was also the catalyst for two major campus facilities. In the late 1980s, Betsy’s lead gift helped cultivate the creation of the Erdman Athletic Center. Prior to this, athletes practiced and competed in a steel building similar to a Quonset hut. When the athletic center opened in the early 90s, not only did Spartan athletes finally have a gym facility but community teams were also invited to practice in it, free of charge. An estimated 15,000 athletes use the center on an annual basis. To this day, club, public school, and community 14
Betsy was a wonderful role model for future philanthropists and her legacy continues to live on through her son, Sumner, who took over her role as a board trustee in 2004. Her granddaughter, Danielle has also chosen to support Seabury Hall through her own philanthropy. Yet of all the gifts Betsy gave, her greatest gift was that of a fierce and tenaciously generous life. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered not only by those of us at Seabury Hall, but also by countless others whose lives were touched with her bold vision, steadfast determination, and passionate spirit of generosity.

1971 Debbie (Debra) Tracey's art world has been expanding into wonderful new adventures! She shared that Vancouver, WA has opened many opportunities for her. Her work has been featured in: a show at Art at The Cave, an upscale restaurant called Elements, and the second floor of the Hilton Vancouver. She will also have her own show at a coffee and wine bar in April 2022. Debbie encourages the Seabury Hall community to take a trip to Vancouver to check out some of these wonderful places. Candy Rutherford Hibner shared a beautiful photo of "The Seabury Sistahs," who got together last July to celebrate their 50th reunion in Seaside, OR. They spent three wonderful nights reminiscing all the great memories, looking at old

1977 Jennifer Bruce shared the exciting news that despite the pandemic, she and Edward Baldwin '76 were married in May 2020. The wedding took place in Kula, Maui and was an intimate gathering with a party of 3.

for Julia Rivas Frey and her family. She and her husband Kurt celebrated
their 20th wedding anniversary and their daughter, Harper, turned ten. She shared "we were lucky to have an outdoor/backyard celebration with good friends. We have been visiting national parks on road trips this school year and can't wait to see more in the spring and summer!"
1988 Laura Robinson Wright celebrated twenty-two years as an editor for the Christian division of Penguin Random House publishing! She has lived in Texas with her family for sixteen years and her daughter is an active middleschooler. Their tiny Yorkie, Lulu and Budgie named BJ (after BJ Hunnicut, if anyone remembers M*A*S*H) get along...if you don't count the fact that Lulu would like to eat him. "Life is good," said Laura. " We're thankful for the peace of Jesus in trying times!"
CLASS NOTES 1989 After finishing as a runner up in a Hay House Publishing Writer's Workshop, Jordan Stark became a published author in 2021. You can find his book on Amazon.

She works in the Imaging Department at Livingston Healthcare Healthcare as a Patient Care Coordinator. The beauty of Montana is equal Maui - just with some pretty brutal winters! She and her daughter, Teal love to spend as much time outdoors as weather permits! Jennifer is looking forward to the Class of 1997's 25-year reunion in the summer of 2022.
