Until The Very End A monthly column by Wendy Derhak, Founder and Executive Director, The Pet Cottage, Jupiter Farms, thepetcottage.org Every time I welcome a new pet into The Pet Cottage pack, there is something I say directly to them. I place my hand on them, look into their eyes, and say, “You are part of The Pet Cottage now. We will always have your back until the very end.” I’ve spoken those words more than a hundred times. And every single time I know they feel the truth in my words. They know. They don’t know where we’re going. They don’t know what tomorrow will bring. But they know they are safe. They know they belong. They know they are no longer alone. At that moment, the promise begins. The beautiful thing about a promise is that you never know how long you’ll be asked to keep it. Sometimes it is measured in months; sometimes in years. Recently, two of those promises came full circle. Last week, we shared the sweet goodbye with little Ace. For eight years, he was part of The Pet Cottage pack. Through every season of his life, the promise never changed. He was safe, loved, and surrounded by the people who cherished him until the very end. Pet Matters on page 6
