By Donna Milbee
In an effort to fulfill our mission; “To strive to Provide a safe, efficient and effective method to get important, current information to all residents of Sabal Springs” we are offering bi-monthly training to assist residents in accessing the HOA Portal. Please contact Linn Campbell to register for the next one. Residents may also reach out to committee members for help to set-up email on their smartphones or tablets to receive the HOA Eblasts. If you are not receiving those you may contact George-Ann, in the office, for assistance.
DID U KNOW?
The lawn service contract is being revisited at this time, however; here are a few excerpts from the current contract with Greenscapes that may be of interest. If you feel they are not fulfilling these obligations, evidential photos sent to the office will be addressed. The full contract can be found on the Sabal Springs HOA website. SERVICES:
Turf Maintenance Contractor will provide for the
following applications consistent with the manufacturer recommendations:
Turf Fertilization - Four (3) treatments per year
Mowing shall be performed with specified mower types and blades to provide a quality cut. Mowing patterns shall be rotated to minimize scalping and rutting by mower wheels and to minimize soil compaction. Contract is for Floratam varieties only.
All turf shall be mowed weekly during the growing season of April thru October and bi-weekly during the slow growing season of November thru March. This will be a total of 42 cuts. Clippings shall be left on the lawn as long as no visible clumps remain on the grass surface 24 hours after mowing; otherwise Contractor will collect and dispose of clippings.
Lake Banks: To be mowed every other week.
Canal Banks: Canal banks to be maintained once per month or twelve times annually.
Del Prado Canal Bank: Canal bank outside of the wall along Del Prado to be maintained two times a month during the growing season and one time per month during the slow growing season.
Turf Weed Control: Chemical weed control will be rotated on an eight week cycle and can only be applied safely when temperatures are below 90 degrees and wind drift is at a minimum. Due to the unavailability or restricted use of effective control products, the prevention or control of Carpet grass, Torpedo grass, Bermuda grass and select sedges are not part of the Agreement and are not included in the Agreement.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
By Linn Campbell
We are happy to inform the residents of Sabal Springs as of today when you place a work order that the resident will be able, after a TWO WEEK period, call the office or go to the office for a notice of completion. Ron or George Ann will be happy to look up that information, which by the way is located on the portal, so there will no longer be any questions if the order is complete. This will be a temporary fix, classes on this will be available to you again on October 8th and December 3rd as of now. This should eliminate any question of what’s been done and that it has been completed. I’m glad the Communication Committee can help with your concerns and questions on this matter.
Once again thank you all for your help in this matter and let the committee know of any other concerns you the resident have and don’t forget the classes we have for you!!

SUN SHINE SINGLES
By Donna Milbee
This summer the singles’ group is all about community involvement. There is always a table full of singles at the parties at the Lakehouse Restaurant as well as “kicking-itup” on the dance floor many Friday and Saturday nights. A deluge of delicious desserts were provided for the Golf Cart Tasting Caravan. Over a quarter of the Block Captain volunteers are from the Sun Shine Singles, doing our part to help our neighbors.
Our own Lorraine Harrington (who has a BIG birthday this month) represented us well at the Artists’ Reception at the Lakehouse, selling several paintings and getting multiple commissions.
There's always more room on the dance floor, at a table, at a movie, or in our carpool! Send Phillis Monfredini (pmonfred@comcast.net) a message if you would like to be on the mailing list for future fun.
We're looking forward to making new friends Wednesday, Sept. 25th, at 4:30 PM in the Sun Shine Room for Happy Hour Planning and dinner afterward.
CAROL DUNCAN AND HER TIRAMISU
By Cathy Ward
Describing Sabal Springs resident Carol Duncan is easy – she is simply a perfect example of “A Student of the Universe.”
A brief summary of her life so far includes a college degree from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in art education, a ski bum in Vail, Colorado, a traveler to New Zealand where she learned to cook in a café, a brief stay in England and many places in Europe, a gourmet cook, a breeder of monarch butterflies, a travel agent, a staff member of Midwest Express Airlines and most recently a recruiter for a variety of companies.
Carol, who moved to Sabal Springs with her husband Jeff in 2017, was born in Hartford, Conn .but moved as a child to the Milwaukee, Wis. area, where she spent much of her life between her many travels. Various friendships took her to ski slopes, foreign countries and around the globe.
Still loving to travel, one of her recent and favorite ventures is being a member of ”Sisters on the Fly,” where she joins other women on camping trips around the country. It’s a women only group of about 20,000 women. Individual outings can have any number of women. The bottom line rule of this group is “Always be Kind.” The next event is viewing a meteor shower. “It’s kind of like being in Girl Scouts,” Carol said.
Carol and Jeff, she said, love Sabal Springs. Jeff is a board member here. “We have met so many very interesting people,” she added. They moved to south Florida to be closer to her parents, who were living in Venice. Her mom is still there. They came to Sabal to visit a friend and soon bought a home.
Carol’s hobbies include making jewelry, machine quilting, acrylic painting and trying new recipes. “You would not believe the stacks and stacks of computer printouts I have of recipes I plan to try. She notes she often tweaks them to fit their taste. One of her favorites is Tiramisu, listed below, which she insists is easy and always delicious.
Tiramisu
1 ½ c. heavy whipping cream.
8 oz. mascarpone cheese
1/3 c. white sugar
1 t. vanilla
1 ½ c. cold espresso
3 T. coffee flavored liqueur
1 Package Lady Fingers
Cocoa powder for dusting the top.
Whip cream, slowly add sugar and vanilla and continue beating until stiff peaks form. Add mascarpone cheese and fold in until combined. Set aside. Add coffee and liqueur to a shallow bowl. Dip ladyfingers in coffee, don't soak, just dip and lay them in a single layer on the bottom of a 8x8 pan. Smooth half of the mascarpone mixture on top. Add another layer of dipped lady fingers. Smooth remaining mascarpone cream on top. Dust cocoa powder generously over the top. A fine mesh strainer works well for the cocoa powder. Refrigerate for at least 3-4 hours or overnight before serving.
IT’S ALMOST TIME
By Loretta Gehman
Since there are so many new residents in Sabal Springs, I thought it appropriate to let all of the newcomers know that their community has a ladies’ golf association open to all levels of play from beginner to well experienced. League play starts this season on Wednesday, October 16th at 8:00 a.m. and continues every Wednesday thereafter until April 16, 2025, with several exceptions for special tournaments. The cost for a yearly membership into the Sabal Springs Ladies Association is $25.00. If you are interested in joining the group or want more information, please contact our membership chairperson Jane Ward at golfingwards@att.net or 239-373-7444 or Loretta Gehman at gehmans@gmail.com or 814-937-2942.

HOLE IN ONE
By Mike Temme (Jokers Wild President)
On Tuesday August 6th, Jay Lind (part of the Joker’s Wild Golf Club) approached the tee box on number 7 as he has done many times. However, today Jay pulled out his 7 iron lined up and struck the ball. At first he didn’t actually know where it went, only to his surprise one bounce on the green and the ball landed in the hole!
Congratulations to Jay Lind! What a great day!
