Meanwhile, social tennis for both men and women is alive and well. All are welcome to join in the fun on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for men and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for women whenever there is no scheduled league play.
Be sure to check out the new Facebook page titled “Sabal Springs Tennis”. Everyone is invited to join.
The first Line Dancing Lesson was held on Friday, January 5, 2024. We had 15 to 20 people show up and fun was had by all. Here is a photo of those who showed up at l:00. Others came later. Noreen, our instructor, had just had surgery but was up to the task. We are hopeful that more will show up (and more snowbirds will be returning). Lessons are every Friday at 1:00 to 3:00 under the portico at the clubhouse entrance until the end of March. Hope to see you there!

HOW DO I LOVE THEE??
By Loretta Gehman
Let me count the ways or the couples. On Saturday, February 10, 2024, forty-two couples representing members of the SSMGA and SSLGA participated in the annual Couples Valentine Day Scramble event. The smiling faces of the committee consisting of Jeff and Linda Charlesworth, Jim and Sharon Croxton, Dave and Robin Fritz and Bill and Susan Roberts greeted the golfers by offering doughnuts and goody bags with candy and crackers to snack on while on the golf course. At precisely 8:30 a sea of red and pink shirts was seen as the golf carts made their way to their assigned tee boxes throughout the course. Many of the holes had special challenges for the teams of four to complete, some with prizes, some with difficult tasks. Upon completion of the scramble event the entire group gathered in front of the Pro Shop to await the results as the scores were tallied by the organizers. While waiting, the couples were challenged to a putting competition.
The scores were checked, the winning teams were put in order and it was time to announce the winners. Twelve places were awarded with prize money in the following order:
12th place Len Hallesy, Joy Melin Larry & Barb Cassidy
11th place Dave & Robin Fritz and Bill & Susan Roberts
10th place Richard & May Wine and John Baas and Sue Short
9th place Bob & Kathy Carpenter and Sid & Yvonne Cegelski
8th place Hugh & Faye Cantrell and Paul Larson and Linda Sholette
7th place Keith & Karol Bunch and Leo Pierson and Arlene Roy
6th place Wayne and Cathy Piper and Ed Herrgard and Nan Shewalter
5th place Scott & Patsy Clark and Roger & Charley Frantz
4th place Art & Jo Decker and Bill & Laurie Simkins
3rd place Brian & Jane Ward and Bucko & Donna Blosinski
2nd place Dave & Loretta Gehman and Ron & Coleen Birmingham
1st place Tom & Sherry Triptow and Dick Hansen and Mary Lou Collins
Traditionally, each special couples’ contest of the season finds the last place team rewarded with the announcement of their distinctive achievement, the title of “LAST PLACE”. It seems this award went to Bob Connelly and Liz Jurocko and John & Eileen Linehan for this event.
As was mentioned above, several holes had special challenges associated with play on that hole. First up was Hole# 1 which was closest to the pin for men’s white tee players. It was won by Paul Larson. Hole# 3 had a heart and a windsock in the fairway for the golfers to attempt to place their ball near. The ladies’ winner was Reenie Heberer and the men’s winner was John Baas. On Hole# 4 a foil heart with a small opening was placed over the cup so that the putt had to be made through the heart. On Hole# 8 All of the ladies were given a chance to get their ball closest to the pin. Sherry Triptow was the winner of that challenge. Hole # 13 was another fairway marked with heart windsocks for closest placement of the ball for both men and women. The winners were Scott Clark and Gayle Barnes. The final closest to the pin was on Hole# 16 and was for men’s gold tee players with Norm Heberer taking home the win.
As always, a great time was had by all of the couples on a very well-groomed golf course thanks to our very capable Director of Golf Michael Stewart and Superintendent Dayton and his crew. Next special event, St. Patrick’s Day!
SOLAR ECLIPSE APRIL 8TH
By Donna Milbee
A total solar eclipse that will occur this April should be spectacular in many ways, even for those who were lucky enough to catch the sun’s show in 2017.
With total solar eclipses occurring every 18 months or so and many visible only over oceans or equally inaccessible areas, any such eclipse over a densely populated region is a cause for celebration. But 2024’s total solar eclipse over North America will happen when the sun is near the peak of its activity cycle. That’s in stark contrast to the last great American eclipse, which occurred in August 2017, when the sun’s activity was approaching a minimum.
At the magic moment of totality in 2017, when the moon was aligned precisely over the disk of the sun’s visible surface, it was briefly safe to look at the convergence with bare eye—and to catch the stunning sight of our home star’s atmosphere, or corona sketching a shallow smear of white around the moon’s blackness, marked by a few shining spikes.
This April a similar total solar eclipse will grace a different swath of North America – including Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, Upstate New York, Maine and more.
This time around, scientists expect that the corona will appear larger and have more outflows and spikelike structures than in an eclipse during quieter solar conditions.
Understanding the sun’s activity carries much more serious consequences than simply enjoying a variety of coronal displays. Solar activity ripples out through the solar system and can interfere with communication and navigation satellites that orbit our planet.
Yet a total solar eclipse remains a priceless opportunity for studying the sun because no instrument can observe the corona in visible light as close to the sun’s surface as is feasible during an eclipse. And those are exactly the kinds of observations scientists need to better understand how the star’s corona and magnetic field interact—and how consequences of these phenomena can affect satellites orbiting Earth. This is part of why scientists flock to every total eclipse, no matter the sun’s activity, and hope others do as well. “Total solar eclipses are always exciting,” per Madhulika Guhathakurta, a solar scientist at NASA. “It will change you.”
Excerpts from Meghan Bartels’ January 18, 2024 article in Scientific America; Why 2024’s Total Solar Eclipse Will Be So Special.

DAYLIGHT SAVING DEBATE
By Cathy Ward
Clocks of all sorts will need to be moved ahead one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 24 – but it might be the last time we need to do the two-times a year switch.
Controversy over this Day Light plan has gone back and forth for years, several presidents and hundreds of lawmakers, and right now at least 19 states including Florida are asking it be halted.
But even the proposed plan is still under debate as some want clocks to follow “sun time” year-round as it is now and some want the clocks to be changed to move the clocks ahead one hour permanently for longer daylight in the evening.
The idea of DayLight Saving is not new. Benjamin Franklin proposed it in 1748, but it wasn’t until 1918 that
it was put into practice in the United States during World War I under President Woodrow Wilson. Germany had started the switch in 1916.
In order for it to be changed, according to Google resources, both the U.S. House and Senate must approve it and then President Biden must sign to approve it. Right now, our Senate has approved it, but not the House.
Currently only two states, Arizona and Hawaii follow no clock-changing plan. Indiana did for a while, but had a split in the state with one side changing clocks and one side not.
Some medical professionals claim the change of times is not healthy, leading to heart attacks, car accidents, missed appointments and stress. Others in retail business claim it helps their business with more people shopping later in the day. Some love the extra daylight in the evenings. Some believe many of our farmers wanted it, but this is apparently not the case. They argued we stay with standard time to keep their animals on the same schedule.
So is Daylight Saving time on its last legs? Right now it is still set to change in March and back to standard “sun time” on Nov. 3rd.
One more thing. While most people call it Daylight Savings time, actually there is no “s” on Savings. It is really Daylight Saving Time.
SABAL SPRINGS PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION (SSPA) NEWS
By Donna Milbee
The SSPA would like to thank everyone who has supported us through our fundraising efforts this past year which have brought us about a quarter of the way to our goal! Our sponsors and residents have helped us raise approximately $14,000 to date. And we have a $10,000 pledge which brings the total over $24,000.
In July 2023, the Board of Directors granted use of the third tennis court for pickleball. This decision came after numerous estimates were discussed as to where permanent courts should be located. It was concluded that the most logical and financially suited location was the third tennis court. Funds must be raised to pave over that court, thus creating four pickleball courts. We do not want to burden the HOA with all the funding, so we are seeking donations within the community. Our goal is to raise at least $100,000. Because of their love for Sabal Springs and passion for pickleball, Jim Van Kuiken and his wife Diane Galante have pledged an additional $10,000 and are challenging others to match or surpass
that amount. While any amount is greatly appreciated, a sizable donation will be permanently recognized at the courts.
Dozens of people play pickleball each week and many fresh faces are enthusiastically attending the beginner’s clinics, proving the necessity for pickleball in Sabal Springs. Having pickleball as an amenity not only increases property values but brings another avenue of unity and social opportunities within our community.
There are fundraising activities in the planning stages. So SAVE THE DATE - APRIL 24TH for rescheduling the Dance that was postponed in November. And “back by popular demand” the Semi Annual Cornhole Tournament is coming to you in June.
Anyone interested in learning pickleball is encouraged to attend a clinic on the 4th Saturday of each month at noon. March 23, 2024, will be the next one. Contact Diane Galante for details.
This is an exciting time to see growth in our community and we hope that everyone will be a part of it.
ANOTHER L.E.G.A. EVENT
By Loretta Gehman
The morning of January 23rd arrived in North Fort Myers chilly but, thankfully, sunny for another day of ladies’ golf for the nine communities involved in the Ladies Executive Golf Association. This day the event was held at Six Lakes, a community on Littleton Road. Four members of the SSLGA were in attendance and enjoyed a pleasant day although none placed in the money. They were Charley Frantz, Loretta Gehman, Sue Short and May Wine. However, there was some excitement that day as Jill Harlow from Whiskey Creek scored a hole in one on hole #10.

THE TRASH TO TREASURE QUEEN
By Beth Lockhart
Sabal Springs has a lot of talented artists and I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing several of them. This month’s featured artist is Marlene (Moe) Rokosz. The dictionary should have a picture of her under the term multi-talented. Originally from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Moe moved to Florida at 17 years old and lived with her Aunt. She did move back to Massachusetts for a while but North Fort Myers is now her home for the last 8 years. She and her husband Bill have lived in Sabal Springs for 7 ½ years. Until Ian, they also had a condo on Sanibel that was unfortunately destroyed by the 20-foot storm surge that hit the island. They are planning on rebuilding but the process has been slow. They’ve been together for 20 years, married for 18. Bill just retired from a career with the postal service after 40 years. She has two daughters from a previous marriage and she and Bill share two adorable pups named Max and Mojo. They also share a passion for the dice game Farkle and play it almost every night.
Moe says she has always been interested in art. Her favorite medium is acrylics but she’s become very adept at chalk painting, glass etching, and pottery. Lately she has taken up watercolors and I bet before long she will be proficient in that as well. When you walk into her front lanai, it is filled with her talent. The brick flooring was painstakingly painted in a really neat pattern and some of her creations adorn the tables. When you walk into her home, it is a display of furniture she has repurposed into stunning pieces and of paintings that she has done. She can also paint rocks, shells and murals. She has sold thousands of pieces over the years. She can pick up six different things in six different places and turn them into one beautiful piece of art that anyone would love to have in their home. Her home here in Sabal really showcases what an amazing talent she is.
Moe is also a self-taught seamstress and has a keen eye for decorating. In high school she made and sold her own beanie babies. During her younger years and throughout her career she has been a hairdresser, a DJ on a radio station, a baker of wedding cakes, a bank manager, a medical secretary, a computer system engineer, a decorator for model homes, and she worked for the Sheriff's office. Through all of this, she has also found the time to own a cabinet shop and four different antique shops, one of which she still maintains in Brimfield, MA.
Moe is not afraid of large projects. In addition to her
front lanai, she also stenciled each tile on her back lanai and once completed her own paver patio in the backyard of a home she built in Cape Coral. She has also created an inspiring landscape design outside her home here in Sabal Springs. When seeing all that she has accomplished I wonder how she finds time to rest. I had to ask her what inspires her and she says “EVERYTHING”. I guess that’s why she’s so busy.

SUN SHINE SINGLES ACTIVITIES
By Geri Gregorio
The Sabal Springs Sun Shine Singles are up and running full swing. We're being creative during the Clubhouse closure and still having fun due to the generosity of our members who have invited us into their homes for monthly planning meetings and get-togethers. We joined the Cape Coral Singles for a Western Night filled with a delightful meal and dancing at Pine Lakes Country Club and another night of friendship and fun at Cape Harbour Clubhouse.
Several members hosted meet and greet driveway parties for BOD candidates. We enjoyed the Food Trucks’ delicious pizza and gelato, dancing, and seeing our community neighbors. We followed our favorite band -- Ron, George & John -- now known as Bandstand, to Cheeks for several nights of more great music and dancing.
Of course, we are attending many outdoor activities here at Sabal, participating in shuffleboard, pickleball, tennis, water aerobics, and pool-side get-togethers. We regularly attend live events at Florida Repertory Theatre, Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, Cape Cabaret, and Lake Kennedy Center.
So, we invite all Sabal Springs singles to join us in one, or as many activities that interest you. Bring us your new ideas!!! Our next meeting is March 28th at 5:00 PM. Please contact Donna Milbee or Geri Gregorio for the location of this meeting.
