Report from Your Master POA

By the time you receive this letter it will be the Holiday Season so let Joan and me wish you all a great holiday season and fun times visiting with your family and friends. It also means that we have completed another Hurricane Season without suffering a direct storm. We did not even exhaust the storm alphabetical listing for the year. But do not fret, the” hurricane gods” will recycle this year’s names again in the future. Actually, it was a blessing that we did not have a major storm this year as there is still a lot of Ian damage left in SWFL, especially on the barrier islands such as Ft Myers Beach and Pine Island. There has been a lot of progress and driving around the mainland you have to look hard to see remaining damage. Our last significant structure damage, the roof on the 5th hole rest room building, was finally repaired last month.

The month of November is the Annual Members Meeting of the Master Property Owners Association. This year we bid a farewell and thanks to two directors: Susan Baker and Steve Borley. Susan was the Chair of

the Communications Committee while Steve was our Board “construction expert”. While Susan is leaving the Board, she has agreed to become the Editor of the Gazzette. She succeeds Bob Pinnell who is moving to a Life Plan community, Cypress Cove on the campus of the Lee Health Park Hospital. We wish him and Sandy a wonderful life there and thank them for all of their contributions to Grandezza since moving here as an original homeowner.

Jack Jones (Savona) and Sarah Hartman (Ville Grande) are our 2 new directors. We appreciate their volunteering to assist in managing the Master assets in Grandezza. At the Board meeting following the Annual Members meeting the Board elected the following as officers: Fred Thompson (President); Peter Dersley (VP and Infrastructure Chair); Mickey Wheeler (Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair): Nancy Reilly (Landscape Chair); Sarah Hartman; (Secretary); Jack Jones (Communication Chair); and Mike Patricelli (Access Control Chair).

Our November luncheon was all about decorating for the holidays. Many of us wanted to go home and start decorating. It was inspirational!

During the meeting we highlighted the main projects the Board completed during 2023. These included: the planning for the repaving of about 80% of our roads; arranging with the Audit committee for the tri-annual fiscal audit; contracting for the capital asset reserve study and calculating the new capital asset assessment; continuing with the final cleanup of the Ian landscaping damage; identifying and renting the office for our Property Manager, Cheryl MacFarland; and arranging for the new Gazzette Editor. Virtually all of these projects required the coordination between various directors.

Longtime girlfriend, Shirley Cook, started her floral career in 1993, after retiring as a cosmetologist, and still works part-time at a flower shop in the summer. As a floral designer, she enjoys creating beautiful arrangements for others that always bring joy, whether it’s a fresh flower or custom silk arrangement. There are so many tips and tricks to make arranging flowers a little easier and affordable, and she shared many of those with us at the event. Shirley and her team of Liz Taylor, Dolores DeLong, Laura Summy and Judy Carter did four different tablescape designs for the tables. As usual, they did a fabulous job! Thank you, ladies!

Our second speaker, Liz Flowers, is an interior designer, originally from the southwest suburbs of Chicago. She completed design portfolio at the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated from Illinois State University with degrees in Art

Reader’s Corner

In a few weeks many will raise tall crystal flutes filled with golden, effervescent bubbly to welcome the New Year. Whether it will be the Veuve Cliquot, Moet & Chandon, Pommery, or any other champagne label, the odds are the wine will be made using a process developed in the 1860s by the house of Pommery based in Reims, center of the French Champagne region. The novel by acclaimed American

Pommery, a woman who fought hard to support her family and achieve her dream while revolutionizing the champagnemaking business in France.

In 1860 newly widowed Madame Pommery learned that her recently deceased husband’s wool and red wine business was heavily mortgaged. Louise Pommery, educated at the best finishing schools in England, was a highly respected local society authority on etiquette, and the founder of an orphanage for poor children. The new widow was advised by her husband’s banker to sell the business and a stately family manor in Reims and to move to a country cottage with her three-year old daughter Louise, so that her older son Louis could continue his studies at the University.

Against all advice, the forty-year-old widow who neither had experience in business nor winemaking, decided to make champagne. When all area champagne houses refused to share their secrets, Louise Pommery read everything she could about making champagne and forged ahead with her

Trust

vision to create a very different kind of bubbly wine. At the time, champagne was a very sweet, “ladies” beverage consumed with desserts. It contained about 140 grams of sugar per liter of wine added during the fermentation process. Louise’s vision was to make a dry, crisp wine that was not too sweet, and might be enjoyed anytime, with or without meals. While the champagne vineries traditionally blended grapes from multiple years harvests, Pommery decided to use a single year’s harvest, creating the first vintage brut champagne. She also used grapes from late harvests, allowing the grapes to stay longer on the vine and to naturally develop higher sugar content, thus eliminating expensive sugar additions afterwards.

Recognizing that French public was not ready for a dry champagne, Pommery decided to introduce her new brut vintage champagne at the London’s World Exhibition. A group of Scottish lords and ladies, Louise’s friends from school years, visited the Champagne Pavilion and placed large orders for the Pommery champagne, becoming her first and most loyal customers.

Despite the initial commercial success of the Pommery champagne in England and Scotland, the fledgling business was soon threatened by the Franco-Prussian war. Louise’s son Louis and her lifelong assistant Henry Vansier were conscripted by Napoleon III to fight the Prussians. While the invading, the Prussian army ransacked the area vineries, but Pommery wines escaped considerable damage because of Louise’ foresight to secretly store her wine reserves in the deep underground caves left over from the ancient Roman chalk mines. Both Louis and Henry were taken prisoners after Napoleon’s defeat. After escaping from the Prussian prison, they formed a resistance group aided by Louise. Hidden beneath the town’s garbage dump, the Pommery wine survived mostly intact and was ready to ship to the British customers once the war was over.

After the war, Madame Pommery envisioned building an impressive vinery styled after the great Scottish country houses in honor of her first clients. It was positioned on top of what used to be the Reims town dump and above the deep caves that would provide constant temperature for wine storage and aging. Madame Pommery hired local builders and a sculptor to create picturesque underground wine cellars in the deep “crayères” chalkpits beneath the vinery. Louise Alexandrine Pommery continued to manage the Pommery champagne house together with her children until she died in 1890. She was the first woman to be given a French state funeral in honor of her contributions to the Champagne industry. The Pommery cellars extend for 18 kilometers (over 11 miles), 32 feet underground, and today are a popular tourist stop in the Reims area.

writer Rebecca Rosenberg tells a captivating true story about Madame Louise Alexandrine

Are You Ready to Spark a Global Shift?

My eyes brimmed with tears as I turned in for the day. I couldn’t help thinking about the fear, hatred and catastrophes our world is facing. I try to stay informed by watching the news; however, I found myself watching too much. Driven by a desire to remain up-to-date on current events, a duty towards humanity to stay informed and intrinsic human nature, we are all programmed to scan for threats as a survival mechanism. Adversely, this can overshadow identifying positivity in our lives, obscuring the joy that surrounds us.

Considering the constant influx of information that inundates us, it’s crucial to balance between staying informed

and over-indulging in news consumption. While awareness of global events is undeniably significant, there’s a tipping point where it can become excessive.

Our collective dilemmas can seem too large and individual change can seem inconsequential. Yet, history is filled with ordinary individuals making extraordinary impacts. For example, Rosa Parks, who sparked the civil rights movement or Todd Beamer, whose bravery abroad a 9/11 flight thwarted a terrorist plan to target the Pentagon. Or, Candy Lighter,

whose personal tragedy birthed the powerful advocacy group, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MAAD). It’s important to remember, that many heartening tales and positive deeds performed by countless individuals worldwide don’t make it into the daily news headlines. It’s essential to recognize that many extraordinary events are also occurring across the globe. Krista Tippett articulated on Dan Harris’s podcast, “Three Skills for Staying Calm, Sane and Open in a Chaotic World,” that individuals who manage to change the world confront reality with a “Yes, And” approach. The question then becomes, what will follow our own, “Yes, And?”

Taking a “Yes, And” approach can also positively and powerfully influence those within our immediate circles, having the potential to expand. “Like the ripples from a stone tossed into the pond from the water’s edge, the effects of our choices extend infinitely outward.” As we reflect on the Dalai Lama’s quote, we all have the ability to create positive change – no matter how little or large – not only for ourselves but countless others.

Scheduling a Comcast Appointment Using the Xfinity App

Frustrated at navigating through the Comcast call center voice activated system? Good news - you can now schedule a Comcast technician visit using the Xfinity App on your smartphone. The App also provides you with many selfservice options.

Here’s a guide to using the App to problem solve and if necessary, schedule a tech appointment.

1. Download the App “Xfinity” from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

2. Sign-in using your Comcast Username and Password.

3. Click on the two dots in the top right corner to launch the Xfinity Assistant. This is a computer driven chat and at this stage not with a live person on the other end.

4. A menu will be displayed for you to select the issue you are experiencing. If you are experiencing a TV or Internet problem, select “Troubleshoot Internet Connection”.

5. Answer the questions that are listed.

6. When asked to describe your issue, describe the problem and also type “I want to schedule a tech appointment”.

7. The Xfinity Assistant will perform several diagnostic procedures, including restarting of your modem and TV box.

8. If unable to resolve the problem, keep asking “I want to schedule a tech appointment”, and you will be transferred to a Live Assistant who will also perform some additional diagnostic procedures. Note that you will still be in a chat but now with a live agent at the other end.

9. If the problem can’t be solved, let the Live Assistant know that you want a tech appointment.

10. A tech appointment will be scheduled.

and Interior Design. She and her husband moved permanently to Grandezza this summer, and Liz relocated her designer business to Southwest Florida to continue creating beautiful spaces for clients. Liz shared with us her tips for

Note that if you have no TV or Internet service you can still use the Xfinity App as long as you have cell service. If your tech appointment is more than 48 hours out, you should send an email to Cheryl McFarland cmcfarland@ vestapropertyservices.com describing the problem and providing the date and time of your appointment, along with your Name, Address, and Contact Phone Number. If you have no TV or Internet service, Cheryl will escalate in an attempt to pull the appointment ahead.

decorating holiday trees. Half the tree was decorated in Hanukkah colors and the other half was a fun golf theme in pink and green. Absolutely beautiful! We celebrated the birthdays of girlfriends Judy Carter, Janet Doll, Amy Maloney, Nancy Rajtik, Judy Rowland, Elaine Russell, Barb Stief, Sheryl Sullivan, and Elena Wild. The lucky winner of the bracelet was Sherry Guggisberg.

California – The Golden State

California is nicknamed The Golden State but we think it also qualifies for the Sunshine State with Florida. We were there in late August through early September and had nothing but sunny days and cool nights.

We met the Sorrentos in San Francisco and drove to Napa; staying at the Silverado Resort. Between golf games there, we managed to visit 11 wineries in four days. Between us, we purchased over 170 bottles of wine. Our favourite wineries were Baldacci Family Vineyards, Darioush and Lambert Bridge (for the wines), Reverie II (for the unique experience) and Castello di Amorosa (for the venue). Our best meal in Napa was at Oenotri (highly recommended).

From Napa we moved to Pebble Beach where we played golf at Spyglass, Spanish Bay and, of course, The Links at Pebble Beach. We stayed at The Inn at Spanish Bay. Be sure to have a cocktail outside as sunsets and listen to the bagpiper. This part of the trip was arranged by The Florida State Golf Association. They did a great job on pricing and organization.

I thank all of directors for their efforts for the Grandezza community!

At the Board meeting we confirmed that we will continue to meet at 5PM on the last Thursday of each month. The meetings are open to all residents, and we extend an invitation to each of you!

Several questions have arisen concerning the new owners of the club facilities. What we informed the audience is that the Board has not met with the new owners and were unaware of the negotiations to sell the club. The club ownership is completely separate from the Grandezza residents and the Master Association. They play no role in our association, and we have no official interaction with them. We have suggested to Stacey that they have a “Town Hall Meeting” in near future. But that decision is entirely up to them.

We attended an East Corkscrew Alliance meeting in November and learned that Phase 1 of the Corkscrew

We are already signed up for the trip they are organizing next summer to Whistling Straits.

On our last day we took a leisurely drive to Big Sur for lunch (Nepenthe) and then on to our final trip dinner at McCormick & Kuelto’s Seafood Restaurant in San Francisco; after the mandatory drive over and back The Golden Gate Bridge. We recommend both restaurants.

A great trip experience with great friends!

P.S. Ask the Sorrentos for a tour of their wine fridge wall, a lasting monument to our trip.

Road construction contract (basically running from Ben Hill Griffin to Wildcat Run) is expected to be completed by about February 15, 2024. Phase 2 of the contract running from Wildcat Run to beyond Alico Road is expected to be completed in 30-35 months. That section includes a major intersection at Alico Road.

During this holiday season please don’t forget our Grandezza United Way campaign to raise $205,000 this winter. The Grandezza team has done a great job developing fun events to support this worthwhile charity and you will be hearing about their 2023-2024 plans in the coming weeks.

Oh yes, before I forget about it. I am sorry that we will not be able to offer our book of the “Best of the Gazette Letters” as a stocking stuffing gift for your closest friends. My wife looked over the 2023 letters and decided that the trees that would have to be destroyed for the paper would provide more enjoyment than the books! Perhaps next year! Have a great (and safe) HOLIDAYS!!

Do you have a travel story to share?

Travel Stories From Grandezza Residents....

Now that the Covid cases have diminished here at home and in many countries around the world, our Grandezza friends and neighbors are beginning to travel again. Hopefully you noticed we have started a “Travel Corner” in The Grandezza Gazette with the help of our traveling residents. We would like to invite you and your traveling friends to share your travel experiences and tell us about any interesting, or unusual destinations and experiences along the way.

We would love to hear about your best stories/logs from your past, or present travels. Have you visited an “off the beaten path” place, or discovered a new or special attraction nearby? What was the most interesting/memorable, or the least interesting? Do you have any special/personal tips or advice that would help others planning to visit the same places? Would you recommend your trip to others? If not, why not? You get the idea! We’re looking for our Grandezza residents to write a short recap of your highlights (200600 words) in any direction you wish to pursue. There are no ground-rules except they must be personal resident experiences and not travel tips etc. from commercial travel agents. Virtually everyone loves to travel, so we expect the readership to be very high.

Hopefully, you have some travel experiences you would like to share. If so, please send them to Al Meyer at meyer815@aol.com and we’ll get them printed as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance for helping to make The Grandezza Gazzette more interesting for our readers.

Urbanization in greater Estero is not something that can be stopped. But it can be made to fit the vision of the Village of Estero. This thought highlighted a night filled with information and ideas for over 200 residents who attended Engage Estero’s Public Forum on the Future of Estero.

Held Oct. 25 at FGCU’s Cohen Student Center Ballroom, the forum highlighted the initiatives in place and under consideration for developing the greater Estero area. FGCU Professor Shelton Weeks moderated a four-member panel about these initiatives and what steps could be completed to improve the vision and objectives. The forum was sponsored by Greg Tolley, executive director of FGCU’s Water School.

The meeting was recorded and watched by an additional 780 residents during the last two weeks. If you want to view the meeting recording, please click www.esterotoday.com, then scroll down on the front page to the recording of the “Future of Estero.”

Attendees and panel members noted the difficulties of the current and future traffic congestion on East Corkscrew Road and Coconut Road (West). Village Manager Steve Sarkozy, a panel member, detailed what efforts are being considered on these challenges. He also discussed current plans for future projects.

Engage Estero’s management team prepared several recommendations for consideration that emerged during the forum.

• The village needs to encourage public input much earlier for planned developments and recreational changes being considered, as panel member Jim Wallace suggested.

• The village often takes a “hard line” to achieve the acceptable village requirements from developers to fit the vision for the village. But there is a need for a more cohesive vision for the village that takes account of all the developments and how they can enhance our community holistically.

• It was suggested that the village consider engaging with a planner or company with a proven track record in “thinking outside the box” to put forward their vision of what Estero will need to meet our future requirements. This does not

imply that village management is doing a poor job but that outside perspectives can provide a broader vision, considering potential shifts in the behavior and needs of the public. Longevity and Visually Learning More about the Village Plans for the Future is the topic for Engage Estero’s Jan. 25, 2024 community and member meeting. It will be held at the Estero Recreational Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Jodi Walborn will discuss that Blue Zones are in areas of the world where people live the most extended lives, consistently reaching the age of 100. In contrast, the average life expectancy in the United States is 77 years, according to the CDC’s Dan Buettner, a National Geographic explorer who identified five such Blue Zones. “People living in Blue Zones are also much less likely to suffer from chronic illnesses.” So, what can we do here in greater Estero that would work to enhance our longevity? Come and find out! Tony Carangelo, Engage Estero’s chef research officer, will reveal the value of looking at new local maps linked to the village’s capital improvement plan to quickly understand better the dynamics of locations in greater Estero. Tony will also reveal details compiled by FGCU students working with him on what potential options could be considered for the 65-acre area by the Estero River.

Don’t miss this important first meeting of the new year. You can learn more at our website: www.esterotoday.com.

SAFETY ALERT: STOP SIGNS GOLF CARTS CHILDREN AND SPEEDING

A STOP SIGN is to notify drivers that they must come to a FULL STOP before proceeding.

CHILDREN ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DRIVE GOLF CARTS

November 10 – December 25

Based on the popular film, this hilarious musical comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. Raised in the North Pole, Buddy is unaware that he is human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. Buddy embarks on a journey to New York. This holiday classic is sure to bring out the true spirit of Christmas...after all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear!

Dec. 30, 2023 - Feb. 17, 2024

Dates may be subject to change. This official Elvis Presley biomusical takes a closer look at the rock star and cultural icon whose impact shaped the history of music. Spanning from his childhood in Tupelo, Mississippi to his triumphant 1968 “Comeback Special” and his ascent to be “The King.” You’ll hear iconic hits including All Shook Up, Heartbreak Hotel, Burning Love, Hound Dog, Don’t Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, Blue Suede Shoes and more!

The driver must come to a complete stop at a stop sign, even if no other vehicle or pedestrian is visible. However, some drivers practice a maneuver called a rolling stop - slowing down but not stopping completely at the sign. This partial stop is not acceptable and is dangerous because pedestrians, bicyclists and other motorists are likely to assume that the driver is coming to a full stop and may proceed into the driver’s path. The MOST DANGEROUS practice is NOT stopping at all. Stop Signs are for the safety of our residents. You are urged to drive safely and come to a FULL STOP.

• Studies have found that four in 10 golf cart injuries are suffered by children. Children under “14” years of age are NOT permitted to drive a golf cart.

• Vehicles on our streets have the right of way.

• Golfers must STOP at golf cart crossings.
