MEET MICHAEL STEWART

Sabal

Springs Director of Golf

It isn’t often a 55-plus community like Sabal Springs gets lucky. But, in the case of snagging our Director of Golf, Michael Stewart, we surely are lucky. Michael came to us approximately 10 years ago with more than 30 years of world class experience. While being interviewed, Michael related that his career has allowed him the opportunity to rub shoulders with the likes of presidents of the United States, the Philippines and Indonesia, as well as many other varied government officials and military dignitaries, golf and other sports professionals, actors, sheiks and even kings – all because of the great game of golf!

At the early age of eight years old, Michael first picked up a golf club when his grandfather began teaching him and his brother the ins and outs of golf. Michael stated that he and his brother completed morning chores around the farm and even detasselled Iowa corn many mornings so they could play golf in the afternoons during his early adolescent summer days. Later in high school, Michael played golf almost daily and began working at a local golf course in Dubuque, Iowa where he eventually became the Assistant Golf Professional.

Following high school graduation, Michael entered the PGA Apprenticeship Program and began working towards his goal of becoming a Head Golf Professional. Michael explained that the PGA Apprenticeship schooling included study and direct experience in business and the administration of golf course management and turf grass agronomy. In addition, the training included learning proper golf fundamentals and instructional techniques such as the mechanics of the golf swing and more. He quickly developed a reputation as an astute swing coach through his training in the program which has been carried through to today. He went on to say that as soon as he passed his PAT (Players Ability Test), he turned professional in 1984 and became the Assistant Golf Professional at the Links of Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida.

As he continued to develop his skills, Michael moved into the role of Head Golf Professional when he was offered a position at the beautiful 63 Hole Championship Golf Course at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena, Illinois. Eagle Ridge is a well-known resort golf course

which is approximately 2 1/2 hours from Chicago. According to Michael, many high-profile people have been known to play the course because of the course quality and style.

A few years later, when offered an opportunity to work as Director of Golf for I.M.G. (International Management Group), he jumped at the chance since he was, “a young ambitious single guy at the time…,” he said with a chuckle. Michael went on to explain that I.M.G. is a company that oversees prestigious golf courses around the world. He stated that he gained valuable experience in managing many varied course conditions and cultural norms in countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Dubai and Kuwait. During that tenure, many of the clubs included the oversight of 100 + employees, and multiple 18 Hole Championship Courses. He stated the position was challenging but also exciting as he met multiple types of dignitaries along the way and learned how to make the best of various course conditions, and, he said, “I always remembered that I was a guest in their countries.” We can only imagine the widely varied customs, religions, and unusual circumstances living and working in the tropics and deserts in those parts of the world must have been!

Once back in the States some seven years later, Michael performed the role of Director of Golf/Manager at the semi-private golf course called Royal Tee Golf and Country Club in Cape Coral, Florida, where he stayed for 8 years. While there, he also coached the North Fort Myers Boys’ High School Golf Team for a time while trying to increase Junior Golf participation in the community.

Michael stated that he remembers arriving in Sabal Springs early in 2014 because the course needed serious help. Those of us who were here then will remember that our tee boxes and greens were overrun with weeds and turf disease was rampant throughout our golf course. Our general golf course conditions were quite suspect at best as you can see by the first picture on the left above (example of turf disease) while the second picture on the right is

an example of our course today. His immediate goal then was, and continues to be, to increase and maintain course conditions at a respectable level so it is marketable. He went on to say that he also saw that the course had not been promoted and therefore outside play was minimal, so he set a goal to increase marketing through his connections and through social media. He began slowly making changes and working towards developing a team of golf course staff who are knowledgeable and capable. Michael is proud to work with his current golf course staff. He says he is also committed to making our golf course as good as it can be. He believes that our golf course is becoming known to be a nice (and challenging) 18-hole executive golf course. He mentioned that there is a lot more management and oversight going on behind the scenes than what we see.

When Michael was asked what he wants Sabal Springs residents to know, he unequivocally stated that we all need to know that he is here to protect homeowners’ golf interest in Sabal Springs. He understands that he is running a business for us and that he has to balance outside play with homeowner play which has at times become controversial. He also wants us to know that he is here to make our golf course as good as it can be given the budget and general make-up of the course.

He also wants us to know he is available to help us in any way he can. If we individually have a simple question about our golf swing or about a rule, he is happy to help. Also, if we are interested in individual or group golf lessons, he has the expertise to accommodate us.

Michael further stated that he wants us to always remember that golf is a game – that it gives us an opportunity for comradery and fun, and a chance to get to know and support one another in a way that no other game can. He went on to say, “golf is a unique sport that offers many life lessons such as perseverance and discipline to those willing to learn.” Michael thinks golf has taught him the meaning of integrity and honesty as well as the importance of learning good social graces, trust and patience.

Lastly, Michael, in all sincerity, stated that he loves Sabal Springs, not just the golfers but also the many people he meets along the way around the Clubhouse. “I love the people here. This is where I want to be…”, was one of his last statements as our interview came to a close. I guess that just about says it all.

So, if you see Michael Stewart around, thank him for his commitment and many contributions to our community at large, and to our golf course in particular. We are lucky to have him as our Golf Professional!

TEAM UP FOR SUCCESS

Teaming up for success is exactly what twelve teams of four golfers each did on Wednesday, February 14th and again on Thursday, February 15th in an attempt to successfully win their individual flights in the 2024 SSLGA 4-Person Team Tournament. Conditions were great, attitudes were right and leadership was established as the foursomes set out to play four different games in the two-day event. At the conclusion of day one everyone checked the scoreboard to see their status and plan their strategy for day two, but, in the end, four teams emerged victorious and claimed their awards on Friday, February 16th at the SSLGA monthly meeting held at Magnolia Landing with a luncheon hosted by Laurie Simkins, Reenie Heberer and Nancy Bastin. The margins from first place to second place were minimal this year including .73 points in the “A” Flight and an even closer margin of .18 points in the “C” Flight. The winners by flight were as follows:

“A” Flight Patsy Clark, Loretta Gehman, Reenie Heberer, Donna Ireland

“B” Flight Donna Blosinski, Cathy Dobson, Liz Jurocko, Eileen Linehan

“C” Flight

Mary Lou Collins, Mary Holten, Marcia Madison, Sherry Triptow

“9” Hole

Kathy Carpenter, Joy Melin, Helen Parlett, Beth Zes

Congratulations to all of the winners. As of this deadline, the next and final special event taking place for the SSLGA is the playing of the Club Championship Match Play Tournament.

HOLE IN ONE TIMES TWO

In less than one week two of our Sabal Springs lady golfers scored a hole in one. On Sunday, February 25th Donna Ireland teed up on hole# 4 and achieved the milestone of her fifth hole in one while playing with Al Parchuck and Tedd and Karen Jamieson. Less than a week later, Barton Sala scored a hole in one on the steeply banked hole# 7 while playing in the Saturday Couples event with her husband Gavin Kirk and Jack and Ellie Nelson. Fortunately for Barton, she was entered in the Hole-In-One Pot that the couples have for Saturday play. After buying endless rounds in the bar, I hope she has some prize money to indulge herself. Congratulations, ladies!

SUNSHINE SINGLES

The Sunshine Singles group is growing in numbers with a following of approximately 40 and about 24-30 active members. As our group grows, we also grow in a variety of activities. Newer members bring their different ideas and frequently find that others have similar interests.

An unexpected side effect that has recently developed is that it’s not only a social group but now a group of singles who truly care about friends who may be in need of help. We reach out and contact each other daily to be sure we are all doing well and help where help is needed. We are single but we are not alone.

Last month members of the group enjoyed live theater at both the Florida Repertory Theatre and Broadway Palm, and dining/dancing at The Standard as well as other local clubs. We’ve enjoyed outdoor activities such as shuffleboard, pickleball, tennis, and the pool. We’ve visited Margaritaville and Sunseekers Resort as well as joining some Cape Coral Singles’ activities. We’re currently planning mini-golf, beach and movie days, and a monthly dine out at Pine Island, Matlacha or other interesting spots. Our Singles Trivia Team won 3rd place last month at The Standard Trivia night!!

If there is something you’d love to do but don’t want to venture out alone, bring your ideas to our next meeting and potluck dinner, on April 25 @ 5:00 PM. Contact Geri Gregorio or Donna Milbee for more information. We look forward to meeting you!

We’re back hard at work again now that the holidays are behind us and Spring is in front of us. Some of the things we have plans for are as follows:

We will be offering again some classes conducted by the Fire Department throughout the year.

We’ve heard hurricane season may start early this year!! So we want to be prepared! That leads to this, we are having a volunteer and instructional meeting in April. The tentative date of April 20th from 2:00pm4:00pm is in play as of now. So if you are a volunteer in our program or if you would like to volunteer, mark your calendar now and come! It’s really important that you be there (the clubhouse main room). Block captains are asked to please attend and If you feel you CAN help, this would be the time to sign up. We would love to have you and your skills. Or if you just want to find out what we actually do join us.

The committee would like to give some thank you:

● To Ron our new CAM for his input and enthusiasm for our committee.

● To Linda and Doug Pechstein for their donations of our safety vests.

● To Tom Tripto and Jim Chandler at the front gate for their time and help with the access to our internal program.

Once again please mark your calendar for April 20th and remember all of our upcoming information can be found on our bulletin board outside the HOA office. Thanks and have a wonderful and safe April.

RICHARD (DICK) SCUDDER

Richard (Dick) Scudder paints in acrylic on canvas usually but recently started a series of sea life cut from 3-ply cardboard, which may be influenced by his move to Florida in 2021.

If you noticed the love of horses in his work that was influenced by his growing up in what we call the “Horse Capital of the World” Central Kentucky. He has a business administration degree which took him all over the Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia area during his career.

His father was an administrator at Georgetown College where his parents started him in art lessons at the age of twelve. He is pictured here with his first painting that his parents cherished all these years.

The show horse painting is of My MY, a six time World Champion Five Gaited Horse, bred and shown by Frank Bradshaw, his neighbor and friend in Georgetown, Ky.

When Dick and his husband, Dan Deshon, decided to move to the Ft. Myers area they took a couple of months to navigate the real estate market looking for a gated community before settling full-time in Sabal Springs in November 2021. Dan works part time as a horticulturist with Edison Estates. His “green thumb" is obvious in the couple's well planted landscaping and potted plant filled lanai. They have a lovely home near the back gate where they enjoy entertaining and have provided some powerful pudding shots for community tasting.

Dick has a daughter and grandchild living in Atlanta who affectionately call the couple Grand Dad and Grand Dan.

Dick paints at a leisurely pace and says painting has always been a source of relaxation and accomplishment though he has sold a few paintings and recently completed a commissioned piece.
