From ongoing neighborhood improvements to memorable community celebrations, it’s been a busy and rewarding season.

This past month, the Abacoa POA completed pressure washing throughout our common areas, giving many of our shared spaces a fresh and clean look. Keeping Abacoa beautiful is a year-round priority, and these improvements help ensure our community continues to be a place we’re all proud to call home.

One of the highlights of July was seeing American flags proudly displayed throughout Abacoa in celebration of Independence Day. The patriotic displays added a special touch to our streets and served as a wonderful reminder of the strong sense of pride we share. We hope everyone enjoyed a fun, safe, and memorable Fourth of July!

August is also filled with exciting opportunities to get out and enjoy everything Abacoa has to offer. Whether you’re attending a concert at the Amphitheater, visiting one of our local restaurants, or participating in one of the many community events, we encourage you to get involved.

If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”~~Ferris Bueller’s Day Off August reminds us that life moves at a rapid speed. Children are heading back to school, families are settling into new routines, and the slower pace of summer gives way to fresh goals and new beginnings. For many adults, August offers something equally important: a chance to put yourself back on the priority list. Whether you’ve spent the summer traveling, entertaining family, or simply keeping up with life’s busy schedule, this is the perfect time to ask yourself: Am I dating with an ultimate goal, or am I simply playing games with others and even myself?

Before jumping into this topic, we want to thank all of our readers for joining us each month. We are grateful to be part of your journey and hope these conversations inspire you to approach dating with confidence and clarity. If you’re happily taken, please share this optimistic news with your single friends and family. Someone you know needs this information, so do pass it on!

One phrase we hear almost daily in the dating world is, I’m just seeing where things go. (I.e., I am rolling the dice.) On the surface, this sounds harmless. It feels relaxed, removes pressure, and even comes across as open-minded. Au contraire, after helping thousands of singles over the years, we have noticed something surprising. Sometimes seeing where things go isn’t about remaining open at all—it’s simply another way to avoid commitment. We are not suggesting anyone should rush into an exclusive relationship after one or two dates. Healthy relationships deserve time to unfold naturally. Every couple has a different timeline, and many factors contribute to building a lasting partnership. There is a significant difference between allowing a relationship to evolve organically and keeping one foot out the door.

Modern dating has created a culture encouraging endless options and envy. Dating apps and social media continually

remind us that there might be someone more attractive, more exciting, or seemingly more compatible around the corner.

Before long, that mindset begins to shape how we date.

Instead of asking: Could I build something meaningful with this person? We begin asking: Could someone even better come along next week? The problem is that meaningful relationships are rarely discovered overnight. They are built through consistency, shared experiences, honest conversations, and a willingness to invest wholeheartedly in another person rather than keeping one eye on the next possibility.

As professional matchmakers, we have seen wonderful people walk away from promising connections—not because of incompatibility, but because they were searching for certainty too soon. They were self-sabotaging. In truth, love rarely arrives with fireworks after the first date. More often than not, attraction deepens, trust grows, friendship develops, and respect strengthens over time. In a world that rewards instant gratification, love still requires patience.

There is another hidden cost to remaining noncommittal that few people talk about: emotional exhaustion. Starting over may seem easier than taking a chance, and eventually, every first date begins to feel the same. The same introductions. The same stories. The same hope, followed by yet another reset.

Who else is out there?

Dating becomes tiring not because there are not incredible people to meet, but because so few connections are given enough time to become something meaningful. One of the oldest sayings still rings true: The grass isn’t greener on the other side; it’s greener where it’s watered. That doesn’t mean staying in unhealthy relationships or ignoring genuine incompatibility.

Healthy standards are important. Yet, there is a difference between keeping your walls up versus open-hearted vulnerability.

Love thrives when we are brave enough to invest before every answer is guaranteed. Perhaps that’s the mindset more singles need to hear today—and we’re happy to be the ones to say it. Instead of asking, Let’s see where this goes, maybe we should begin asking, Am I willing to give this person a genuine opportunity?

As summer comes to a close and the Fall 2026 season begins, we encourage you to stop waiting for the perfect person to magically appear and instead become proactive about building a meaningful connection. Sometimes the greatest risk isn’t committing too soon—it is never allowing yourself and

your potential paramour the chance to grow. Until next month, embrace this new season, invest in yourself, and remember: the best relationships aren’t found by accident—they’re built with intention. Neighborhood News Abacoa Community Garden – Summer Soil Solarization While most traditional vegetables struggle in the intense Florida summer heat, June, July, and August provide an opportunity to naturally clean the garden beds. By using soil solarization—covering dormant beds with clear polyethylene plastic for six to eight weeks—you can naturally bake away weeds, harmful nematodes and soil-borne diseases.

To begin the process, clear the bed of all debris, roots, and mulch by lightly raking the top two inches of the soil and removing what you gather. Next, water the garden bed thoroughly just before laying down the plastic, unless it has recently rained, because wet soil conducts heat far more effectively than dry soil. It helps to pile the dirt up slightly toward the center of the bed before covering it, which prevents rainwater from pooling on top of the plastic and cooling down the soil underneath.

Once the bed is prepared, stretch a strong, clear polyethylene plastic between 2 and 6 mils thick over the entire area, or least a plastic that will not tear or decay in the heat. Clear plastic is essential because it allows sunlight to pass through and trap the heat underneath. To seal the heat in, dig a shallow trench around the perimeter and completely bury the edges of the plastic with packed soil, or lay down rocks, to trap the heated air.

Leave the plastic in place for six to eight weeks. Keep watch though, for the process isn’t working if you see weeds growing underneath the plastic. If you notice growth, check for tears or unsealed edges where heat might be escaping.

When ready to plant, remove the plastic and let the bed air out for a few days. While solarization is incredibly effective, the downside is that the heat also kills off beneficial soil organisms alongside the harmful ones. Fortunately, the beneficial organisms return and recolonize the soil much faster than the pests do. You can easily help rebuild your soil’s microbiome by mixing in fresh compost before you begin planting.

Around Abacoa Summer Isn’t Over: Drowning Prevention Must Remain A Priority As families continue enjoying the final weeks of summer, pools, beaches, and boats bring opportunities to make lasting memories—but they also remind us that the risk of drowning remains high this time of year.

For my family, water safety isn’t just a cause—it’s deeply personal.

In 2013, we lost our precious son, Jake, in a drowning accident while we were on a Thanksgiving family vacation.

Jake was just 2 years old. In the midst of what should have

been a memorable vacation with our family, our lives changed forever. That unimaginable loss led us to create the Live Like Jake Foundation so that other families would never have to experience the heartbreak we live with every day.

Sadly, drowning remains one of the leading causes of death for young children, and Florida has experienced record-breaking child drowning numbers in recent years.

These heartbreaking tragedies remind us that drowning is not a rare event—it is a preventable crisis affecting families in communities across our state.

The encouraging news is that drowning is preventable when we use multiple layers of protection. No single safety measure is enough on its own, but together they create barriers that can save a child’s life.

The most important layers of protection include: • Constant, undistracted supervision. Always designate a responsible Water Watcher whose only job is watching children in and around the water.

• Secure your home. Keep all doors and windows leading to the pool locked and alarmed at all times. Door and window alarms provide an important alert if a child unexpectedly exits the home. If you hav e a pet door, lock it or remove it entirely while young children are in the home.

• Survival swim lessons. Children can begin ageappropriate survival swim lessons as young as six months old. These lessons teach essential self-rescue skills that can help save a child’s life if they unexpectedly enter the water.

Playground Improvements Are Underway The Town continues to make progress on park and playground improvements throughout the community.

Following Town Council approval, new playground equipment will be installed at Abacoa Community Park, Heights of Jupiter Park, Daily Park and the Jupiter Community Center. These upgrades will feature artificial turf surfacing, shade structures, and modern, inclusive play equipment designed to treat safer and more accessible spaces for residents for all ages.

Construction is underway on a new restroom facility at Indian Creek Park. Future enhancements planned for the park include a splash pad and additional parking, further improving the experience for residents and visitors in 2027.

The Town looks forward to celebrating these improvements and welcoming the community to enjoy the enhanced park facilities.

By the time many families begin thinking seriously about college admissions, valuable opportunities have already been missed. A strong college application is built over four years, not during the first few months of senior year.

With admission to Florida’s public universities becoming more competitive each year and scholarships

such as Bright Futures requiring students to meet specific milestones, every year of high school matters.

Freshman year is about building a strong foundation.

Students should focus on earning the best grades possible, developing effective study habits, and becoming involved in activities they genuinely enjoy. FAU Study: Out Of Darkness, Blind Mexican Cavefish Illuminate Brain Evolution Deep within the dark caves of northeastern Mexico lives a fish that has spent hundreds of thousands of years adapting to a world without light. The blind Mexican cavefish (Astyanax mexicanus), has evolved in perpetual darkness, losing its eyes and pigmentation while developing remarkable adaptations that help it survive in nutrient-poor environments.

Now, scientists are using this extraordinary species to uncover how evolution rewires the brain and shapes behavior.

Because Astyanax exists both as sighted surface fish and as more than 30 independently evolved cave populations, researchers can directly compare how life in darkness alters sensory systems, neural circuits and behavior.

With new genetic tools and advanced imaging technologies that allow scientists to watch brain activity in real time, this unique fish is providing unprecedented insights into how animals adapt to extreme environments – and how evolution transforms the brain itself.

To investigate how evolution changes the brain to produce new behaviors, Florida Atlantic University researchers and collaborators compared how surface fish and cavefish respond to changes in light. They combined behavioral experiments with advanced whole-brain imaging techniques that allowed them to visualize neural activity in living fish at cellular resolution.

Using genetically engineered fish that express fluorescent markers in neurons, the scientists tracked how different brain regions responded when fish were exposed to light and darkness.

They also mapped these responses onto an established cavefish brain atlas and used targeted experiments to examine the role of dopamine-producing neurons in driving behavior.

The study, published in Science Advances, revealed a striking evolutionary reversal in behavior. While surface fish became more active when suddenly plunged into darkness – a response believed to help them search for light – cavefish did the opposite, becoming more active when exposed to light. This light-triggered response likely helps cavefish avoid illuminated areas such as cave entrances, where they would be more vulnerable to predators and environmental conditions outside their dark subterranean habitat.

By mapping activity across the entire brain, the researchers identified changes in a region known as the posterior tuberculum,

as well as a previously unrecognized neuronal cell type linked to these behaviors.

“Remarkably, neurons that respond to darkness in surface fish were found to respond to light in cavefish, suggesting that evolution can repurpose existing neural circuits rather than creating entirely new ones,” said Erik R. Duboué, Ph.D., senior author, an associate professor of biology in FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, and a member of FAU’s StilesNicholson Brain Institute.

The team also discovered that dopamine signaling plays a central role in these responses, revealing a conserved brain pathway that has been modified over evolutionary time.

“Our discovery that cavefish have evolved light-evoked photokinesis allowed us to ask what brain regions are affected and which neuronal subgroups could contribute to behavioral variation,” said Duboué. “The fact that all previously studied eyed fish exhibit dark photokinesis and that only cavefish exhibit light photokinesis suggests that this behavior evolved as an adaptation to cave life.”

The findings expand scientists’ understanding of how brains evolve in response to extreme environments and provide one of the clearest examples of how changes in neural circuits can drive behavioral adaptation.

Because similar dopamine pathways are conserved across vertebrates, including fish, rodents and primates, the research may offer broader insights into how brains process sensory information and adapt to changing conditions.

The study also provides evidence that photokinesis is genetically inherited. By crossing surface fish with cavefish, the researchers observed a wide range of responses in hybrid offspring, demonstrating that the tendency to become more active in light or darkness is encoded in the genome. Future studies will explore the genes and developmental mechanisms responsible for rewiring these neural circuits and shaping behavior.

“Cavefish provide a unique model for studying how sensory systems evolve and how brains adapt to novel environments,” said Duboué. “By understanding how evolution modifies neural circuits to process environmental information, we can gain deeper insights into the fundamental principles that shape behavior across the animal kingdom.”

Beyond illuminating how animals adapt to extreme

environments, this research may have far-reaching implications for understanding the human brain. Many of the neural pathways involved in sensory processing, movement and dopamine signaling are highly conserved across vertebrates, meaning they function similarly in fish and humans. By revealing how evolution rewires brain circuits to produce new behaviors, these findings could provide insights into neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders linked to altered sensory processing and dopamine function, including Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Study co-authors are Robert A. Kozol, Ph.D., an assistant professor, St. John’s University; Ally Canavan, a graduate of FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College – this paper was part of her honors thesis; Bernadeth Tolentino, a Ph.D., student at the University of Southern California; Alex C. Keene, Ph.D., professor and department head of biology, Texas A&M University; and Johanna E. Kowalko, Ph.D., an assistant professor of biological sciences at Lehigh University.

Bailey Foundation, will spend eight weeks in the laboratories of leading biomedical researchers, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge research techniques, experimental design, data analysis and scientific communication.

This year, more than 250 students applied for just 14 spots, making the Kenan Fellows High School Summer Internship Program one of the most selective research opportunities available to high school students in the region. The highly accomplished cohort includes students with experience in areas such as electron microscopy, computer programming, robotics and independent scientific research. Through the program, institute scientists provide mentorship and hands-on training to help prepare the next generation of biomedical researchers.

The interns will spend their summer working full-time, contributing to ongoing biomedical research projects while learning advanced laboratory techniques. Working alongside faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, they will gain firsthand insight into the collaborative nature of scientific discovery and the day-to-day realities of a career in research.

The interns’ summer of research will culminate in a symposium where they will gain experience in scientific communication by presenting their findings to peers, mentors, family members and friends.

The 2026 Kenan Fellows: • Sophia Chen, from Martin County High School, is interning in the lab of Ayako Makino, Ph.D., of the Center for Inflammation Science & Systems Medicine. Chen is a rising junior and aspires to build a career in medicine. “I am honored to have been selected for this prestigious program, which gives me the opportunity to intern in the Makino Lab. Throughout the program so far, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning a variety of lab skills, such as genotyping, cell culture and pipetting. This experience has reaffirmed my love for

science, and I am excited to hopefully continue this as my future career,” said Chen.

• Alexandria Cogle, from Jupiter Community High School, is interning with neuroscientist William Ja, Ph.D. Cogle plans to pursue an M.D. and specialize in pathology.

• Johanna Daugherty, from the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, is interning in the lab of Jason Yuan, M.D., Ph.D., of the Center for Inflammation Science & Systems Medicine, where she hopes to develop her research skills and prepare for a career in STEM. • Emily Dillon, from Oxbridge Academy, is interning in the lab of Patrick Griffin, Ph.D., scientific director of the institute. Dillon aspires to attend medical school and specialize in neurology.

• Lily Feiner, from The Benjamin School, is interning in the lab of Joe G.N. “Skip” Garcia, M.D., director of the Center for Inflammation Science & Systems Medicine and associate vice president for research at UF Health. Feiner is eager to contribute to scientific discovery at the institute. “I’m really enjoying being part of the Garcia Lab because it’s given me the chance to see the science I’ve learned in school come to life in a real research environment. Instead of just learning concepts in class, I’ve been able to see how they’re used to answer questions that could eventually improve human health, which has made me even more excited for my future in biomedical research,” said Feiner.

• Heather Garcia, from Jupiter High School, is also interning in the lab of Jason Yuan, M.D., Ph.D., of the Center for Inflammation Science & Systems Medicine. With previous experience in biochemistry, Garcia plans to pursue a career in biomolecular engineering. “Being part of this program has been one of the most impactful experiences I’ve had,” said Garcia. “I love working in the Yuan Lab and studying the SARS-CoV-2 E and Piezo1 ion channels in pulmonary hypertension because the combination of being hands-on and understanding the scientific framework that goes into each experiment has given me a new perspective of the research process. It’s made me even more excited to explore biomedical research and pursue a career where I can continue to build on what I’m learning this summer.”

• Aria Kaul, from South Fork High School, is interning in the lab of chemist Thomas Kodadek, Ph.D. An IB student with hands-on experience in PCR and gel electrophoresis, Kaul hopes to pursue both biomedical engineering and a medical degree.

• Devesh Kumaresh, from American Heritage Schools Palm Beach, is interning in the lab of neuroscientist Sathya Puthanveettil, Ph.D. With prior training in laboratory techniques

• Emily Linder, from Oxbridge Academy, is interning in the lab of neuroscientist Gavin Rumbaugh, Ph.D. Linder plans to use her experience at the institute to build a strong foundation for a future in science.

• Aidan McCorkle, from The Benjamin School, is interning in the lab of Matthew D. Disney, Ph.D., chair of the institute’s department of chemistry and director of the UF RNA Genomic Medicine Center. McCorkle hopes to pursue biomedical engineering and develop innovative healthcare solutions.

• Cathryn Murray, from the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, is interning in the lab of Mauricio Martins, Ph.D. Murray plans to study biochemistry and pursue a Ph.D. focused on advanced immune therapies. “Being selected for this program has given me the amazing opportunity to gain hands-on research experience while working alongside talented scientists in the Martins Lab,” said Murray. “My project focuses on understanding immune responses at the injection site of a potential one-shot functional cure for HIV. It has been incredibly rewarding to contribute to research with the potential to improve lives and expand access to treatment around the world.”

• Stefanie Ratchev, from Suncoast High School, is interning in the institute’s robotic High-Throughput Molecular Screening Center with Timothy Spicer, Ph.D. Ratchev has experience in programming and design through STEM coursework and aims to develop innovative biomedical technologies.

• Brady Spanks, from Suncoast High School, is interning in the lab of Thomas Bannister, Ph.D. He plans to pursue a career in STEM. • Melany Suarez Ibarra, from Suncoast High School, is interning in the lab of Luis de Carvalho, Ph.D. With prior experience in laboratory, computational, and independent research, Suarez Ibarra plans to pursue a career in medicine while continuing advanced scientific research.

“Working in the Carvalho Lab and investigating the function of GuaB3 in Mycobacterium smegmatis has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had,” said Suarez Ibarra. “I’ve loved being hands on in the lab while also reading scientific literature and understanding the scientific foundation behind our experiments, and working alongside such supportive researchers made me realize how much I genuinely enjoy research. I had always planned on pursuing an accelerated B.S. and M.D. pathway, but this experience inspired me to pursue an M.D. and Ph.D., so I can continue contributing to research throughout my career.”

Government Northern Notes Midges – Those Pesky Insects!

By Katie Roundtree, Director of Finance and Administration, Northern Palm Beach County Improvement District Blind mosquitoes, phantom midges, aquatic midges, no-see-ums—call them what you will; when they hatch, you’ll know it!

If you live on or near a retention pond or similar body of water in Florida, chances are you are familiar with large swarms of flying insects that inundate your house, yard and screen room periodically throughout the year. Midges are small, dainty aquatic flies with one pair of long, narrow wings and long, skinny legs. While often thought of as the mosquito’s “cousin,” midges don’t bite, sting, suck blood or transmit disease.

Midges and mosquitoes are often mistaken for each other, which makes sense given that both belong to the order Diptera. The main difference is that mosquitoes have a proboscis, a mouthpart used to bite and suck blood, while midges do not bite humans. Otherwise, most visible differences are in the fine details.

Midges have the following characteristics: • When landed, fold their first leg pair in a “prayer” position (which can be mistaken for antennae).

• Have long tarsi on the foot portions of the forelegs.

• Lack scales on their wings, making them smooth.

Mosquitoes have the following characteristics: • Have scaly wings with a light fringe on their tips.

• Typically, don’t form swarms.

Aquatic midges breed in habitats such as ponds, lakes, wastewater treatment plants, and other nutrient-rich water bodies. Midge flies are a food source for other aquatic insects, such as dragonfly nymphs and several varieties of fish, so the goal is not to completely eliminate them, but to keep them in proper balance within the ecosystem.

Areas that receive excess lawn fertilizer runoff and very deep, organic lakes tend to be densely populated with midges, particularly phantom midges. The juvenile stages of development occur in the water and upon hatching, large swarms of adults congregate on the surfaces of buildings, screens, shrubs and other surfaces. These hatches create severe nuisance problems as they are attracted to light.

Spiders build webs in eaves and around homes to catch midges, leading to excessive cleaning and expense.

Midges have become a prevalent pest over the last few years due to several key factors:

1. The number of developments that require stormwater systems to prevent flooding has increased.

2. High nutrient loads in deep stormwater systems are ideal for midge breeding.

3. Low dissolved oxygen levels are factors found in deep lakes.

So, what do we do about them? Chemical treatments by a licensed contractor, where applicable, for both larval and adult stages can provide temporary and expensive relief. To get to the root of the problem, the amount of nutrients going into water bodies must be reduced. This can be achieved by using best management practices for fertilizer application and stormwater inflow management. Adding oxygen to stormwater systems using diffusers and aerators will improve the health of lakes and ponds by increasing dissolved oxygen levels. By addressing these contributing factors, hatch offs can be greatly reduced. You may want to try lowering your light output at night to make your area less attractive to midges. Home barrier chemical sprays may also offer some temporary relief.

NPDES tip: Your neighborhood drainage system is not a garbage disposal—don’t treat it like one. Encourage residents to take responsibility and to not dump chemicals, fertilizer, paint, oil, etc., in inlets or pipes. Discourage sweeping of lawn clippings and dirt into street drains and disposing of lawn clippings and other debris (wood, concrete blocks, Christmas trees, etc.) directly into retention lakes. Keep drainage facilities clear of vegetation, trash, improperly and illegally discarded appliances, shopping carts, tires, cars, garbage bags, etc.

Commissioner’s Update A Day Out, A Second Chance: The Impact Of Doggie Daycation

By Commissioner Maria G. Marino One of the most exciting initiatives to arrive in Palm Beach County this summer is the Doggie Daycation Program, a creative and compassionate effort that connects residents with shelter dogs while helping more pets find loving forever homes.

The Doggy Day Out: Ambassador Program was launched to showcase adoptable dogs at Board of County Commissioners (BCC) meetings, giving residents the opportunity to meet them and learn about their personalities in a public setting. The program quickly proved successful, with dogs such as Coby, Tito, Strudel, Edison, and Trixi finding homes after participating. As additional County Commissioners’ offices and county departments joined the initiative, it expanded throughout Palm Beach County and gained state and national recognition. The program was also featured at the 2026 Florida Association of Counties Conference, highlighting Palm Beach County as a leader in developing innovative approaches that improve outcomes for shelter animals while strengthening community engagement.

The overwhelming community response to the Ambassador Program inspired the creation of the Doggie Daycation Program.

After meeting adoptable dogs at BCC meetings, many residents asked how they could spend more time with shelter pets and host a dog for the day. In response, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control launched Doggie Daycation, giving approved residents ages 18 and older the opportunity to take a shelter dog out for a day of fun and companionship. Participants can enjoy activities such as walks, visits to parks, relaxing at home, or

other dog-friendly outings. These experiences provide valuable enrichment, exercise, and socialization for shelter dogs while allowing residents to build meaningful connections with the animals and help showcase their personalities to potential adopters. By increasing community involvement and visibility for adoptable pets, the program helps create more opportunities for dogs to find their forever homes.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control provides all necessary supplies, including a leash, collar, treats, waste bags, the dog’s profile information, and recommendations for dog-friendly destinations throughout the county. The program offers a unique opportunity for individuals and families who may be unable to own pets due to housing restrictions or other circumstances to enjoy the companionship of a dog while making a meaningful difference in a shelter animal’s life.

The program serves as an important reminder to residents considering adding a pet to their family before

adopting a dog, by visiting Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. The shelter is home to many loving, loyal, and deserving animals waiting for a second chance. By choosing adoption, families not only gain a new companion but also help reduce shelter overcrowding and improve the lives of countless animals.

The Doggie Daycation Program is more than just a day out for shelter dogs, it is a pathway to hope, connection, and new beginnings. Through innovation, community engagement, and compassion, Palm Beach County is helping transform the lives of shelter animals one daycation at a time.
