CNN reported September 29 that Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron granted a request by an unnamed juror to release transcripts from grand jury deliberations in the Louisville, KY Breonna Taylor case. This was after Cameron initially refused to release the transcripts despite growing public outcry.

The juror claimed that Cameron misrepresented what actually occurred in the hearing and did not offer panelists the option to indict the two officers involved in Taylor’s tragic death. According to CNN’s report Monday, “Cameron announced he would comply with a judge’s ruling ordering a recording of the grand jury presentation be added to the court’s case file.”At press time, the juror had yet to speak out publicly and the recordings were yet to be released.

Tuesday, September 29 President Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden met for what turned out to be a chaotic and intensely combative night, with President Trump aggressively sparring and repeatedly interrupting Joe Biden, often preventing any semblance of a civilized and honest discourse. By night’s end, even Trump supporter Chris Christie - who reportedly helped Trump prepare for the debate - criticized the president’s performance, calling it “too hot.” A known white supremicist hate group, The Proud Boys, immediately took to social media to adopt Trump’s call for them to “Stand back and stand by,” when Trump was asked to condemn white supremicist and militia groups.

Debate: continued from page 1

Debate moderator, Fox News Anchor Chris Wallace, reminded Trump that he had agreed to observe debate rules. Time and again during the 90 minute debate, Trump refused. As he has done throughout his presidency, Trump broke our democratic norms. His core base may love him for it, but the general consensus among Republican and Democratic political pundits was that his debate performance was ineffective and, as Wolf Blitzer of CNN said, “a disgrace to the American people.” Biden’s performance, while not sterling, was largely considered to be calm and competent and showed he genuinely cares for the well being of the American people.

Debate topics were: The Trump and Biden Records, The Supreme Court, Covid-19, The Economy, Race and Violence in our Cities, and The Integrity of

the Election. Not much of either candidate’s positions were substantially shared Tuesday night due to Trump’s overly combative interruptions, constant over talk, and deliberate strategy of misinformation.

For his part, Biden often peered directly into the camera to address the American people and get his message heard. “The fact is,” Biden said at one point, “this man doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Biden implored everyone to “Vote. Vote. Vote.”

When asked whether the American people benefited from such a contentious debate, Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris said, “I think America benefited from the contrast” and said Trump was “dog whistling through a bullhorn.”

Senator Harris and Vice President Mike Pence will have their vice presidential debate next Wednesday, October 7, 2020.

In Support of the Breonna Taylor Case is a Glaring Example San Diego NAACP President of America’s Two‑Tiered Justice SysteM

The San Diego Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is preparing to hold elections for Officers. One would think that a local organization which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in the short life of its interim President, would be more than glad to have such a demonstration of leadership and fiscal success continued during such difficult times. It appears that there are those who do not agree that Mrs. Francine Maxwell has done such a great job during the time she has stepped up from First Vice President to President.

It has been under the leadership of Mrs. Maxwell that the local chapter has seen a growth in real involvement of the

civic life of the people of the City of San Diego. The local chapter of the NAACP should be encouraging both membership and involvement consistent with the 101 year old history of the National organization. Mrs. Maxwell and any others that meet the requirements of membership should be able to be nominated, and if possible, elected to a full term as local President. Those members of the Chapter’s present Nominating Committee which has vowed to block Mrs. Maxwell from even being nominated, should resign in the interest of the organization they pretend to care about.

The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint supports the nomination and hopefully the election of Mrs. Francine Maxwell as the next President of the San Diego Chapter of the NAACP and urges the community to get involved and do the same. Under her leadership, the organization has been a strong partner of this newspaper in advocating for all the members of this community, regardless of race or gender. Such refreshing efforts should be rewarded with the opportunity for the continuation of service. Let’s not exchange the “passion of leadership for the pearls of illusions” that some would offer even though they have done very little, if anything.

Trump Brands Black U.S. Senator

to Crime and Avoids Denouncing Violence

On August 18, speaking at an event at the White House, President Trump said, “The suburban voter, the suburban housewife, women and men living in the suburbs, they want security and they want safety. They don’t want to have their American dream fulfilled and then have a low-income housing process built right next to their house or in the neighborhood… That’s not part of the deal.”

On August 31, with 62 days until Election Day, Trump said, “Westchester was ground zero for what they were trying to do. They were trying to destroy the suburban beautiful place — the American dream really. They want low income housing and with that comes a lot of other problems including crime, may not be nice to say but, there is a level of violence. So, you have this beautiful community in the suburbs including women right — they want security. I end it where they build low income housing projects right in the middle of your neighborhood. I ended it.

If Biden gets in, he already said it’s going to go at a much higher rate than before. You know who is going to be in charge of it? Cory Booker, that’s gonna be nice OK.” Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey represents and lives in Newark. In recent days since the end of the Republican Convention, Trump has made his 2020 election strategy clear: He will attempt to scare white suburban women.

Barely trying to conceal his consistent racism, Trump appeared to be attempting to get white suburban voters to vote for him by using fear and channeling various stereotypes about violence, crime and poverty.

During the week of the Republican convention fear was a reoccurring theme that never left the stage. Trump has steadfastly avoided being critical of the recent violence seen in Wisconsin after Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha Police Officer.

In August 2017, days after a racist rally in Charlottesville of neo-Nazis resulted in the murder of Heather Heyer and the inadvertent deaths of two Virginia State Troopers responding, Trump said, “I watched those very closely, much more closely than you people watched it. And you have — you had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent, and nobody wants to say that, but I’ll say it right now. You had a group — you had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit, and they were very, very violent.”

At the time, White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon was on staff at the White House. The turmoil in Charlottesville was just a precursor of what was to come. In only the last six months, Trump has mishandled a deadly pandemic that has led to the deaths of over 180,000 Americans. The U.S. now leads the world in the number of deaths.

Trump’s use of fear in an attempt to win the White House easily surpasses recent Republican presidents who have marketed “law and order” and other tag phrases to stoke fear in the minds of white suburbanites. Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon and George Wallace used similar southern strategy tactics to get white voters galvanized. But no one has gone as far as Trump has in stoking fear and inciting violence.

Trump’s consistent reliance on controversy, fear and race baiting is likely to get worse in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election.

Perversion of justice is too feeble a term to describe the decision of a grand jury in Louisville not to file even a single criminal charge related to Breonna Taylor’s death.

The barrage of gunfire that endangered Breonna’s neighbors is the very same gunfire that took Breonna’s life. The grand jury’s decision that the risk of injuring neighbors is a crime but the actual killing of an innocent young woman defies comprehension.

Grand juries respond to the evidence presented to them by prosecutors; because the proceedings are secret, we don’t know what the jurors were told and what was withheld from them. Witnesses are questioned only by the prosecutor, and there is no one to challenge inconsistencies in their statements or cross-examine them.

The tragedy of Breonna Taylor’s death is likely to go down in history as one of the most glaring examples of the twotiered system of justice we have in the United States in 2020 – one for white Americans and another for Black people.

Kentucky is a Castle Doctrine state and has a “stand your ground” law. But when Breonna’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker – a licensed gun owner with no criminal record – exercised his right under Kentucky law to defend himself and Breonna, he was charged immediately with attempted

murder. There is no earthly reason to doubt that he believed a home invasion was in progress and their lives were at stake. He immediately telephoned 911, crying and pleading for help.

The white officers who smashed their way into the home and returned Kenneth’s single shot with a flurry of deadly and reckless gunfire, are absolved. That’s the justice system for white America. If not for the sustained pressure of activists and protesters, Kenneth would still be in jail. That’s the justice system for Black America.

Endangering neighbors with gunfire is a crime. That’s the justice system for white America. Fatally shooting an innocent woman is not a crime.

That’s the justice system for Black America.

When white shooters who live in a “stand your ground” state claim self-defense in the death of a Black person, 36 percent are ruled justifiable homicides. That’s the justice system for white America. When Black shooters claim self-defense in cases involving the deaths of white people in these same states, just 3 percent are ruled justifiable homicides.

That’s the justice system for Black America.

Our dear sister, friend and colleague, BARBARA LOUISE DAVIS, left this mortal world on June 17, 2020, at age 74. She was born in Poughkeepsie New York on May 18th 1946, the child of Minerva and Charles Davis (USN Dec.) She graduated from San Francisco State University, obtained a CA teaching credential and garnered her law degree from the University of San Diego, School of Law. She was a longstanding and active member of Bethel Baptist Church, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and past president of the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association. She is survived by a paternal aunt, Frances R. Davis of Donalsonville, GA, cousin George Riley of Atlanta, GA, a number of other cousins and friends, students, clients, legal and church community members whose lives she touched in the course of her extraordinary life.

Although she wished for no service, she loved children, please donate to a children’s charity in her honor and memory. She would appreciate that.

SIMON DAWSON was born the ninth child and fifth son of Lillie B. Keys Dawson and Lovelace Dawson, on Friday, April 12, 1946.

Simon completed grade school and middle school at Hopewell School and graduated from Carver High School in Collins, Mississippi. Simon loved God and accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age.

He didn’t like his food being touched, and his coffee had to be fresh and black. His hair stayed dyed black and always combed to the back. He loved smoking cigarettes and would only buy certain name brand items. He was an avid reader and loved to debate on subjects he was passionate about. Above all else, Simon was kind hearted and spirited about Christ, life, and believed in paying his tithes.

EARNEST MICHAEL CHAPMAN entered into this life. He lived his life in a similar manner, smooth with his words and an effective persuader.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Michael spent his youth object of the game was to win, and Michael set his sights at being the best on the field. He completed his formal education College in Hayward, CA., where he played football.

Because of the commitment by God to religiously educate our children, he was exposed to the Catholic faith by his mother Wanda Davis where he completed the sacraments of the church, while attending Christ the King Catholic Church. He participated in the youth choir, the CCE (Continuing Catholic Education), and volunteered his services whenever he was needed for the ongoing ministry.

On September 24, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. in Los Angeles, CA, Simon entered into eternal rest.

Featured were 4 top leaders in San Diego education. From the government side was the San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paul Gothold, as well as the Senior Director of Equity for the San Diego County Office of Education, Dr. Fabiola Bagula. Representing teachers was Tamara Muhammad, a school principal and board member for RISE San Diego.

Also featured was Steven Askar, the co-founder and chief operation officer at Read Aloud Productions: ReadToMe.

Tamara Muhammad feels a more personal responsibility in her daily life—she approaches her duties as school principal under the idea of “how can I repair that hurt?” The hurt she references are the years of students and teachers alike not being listened to. She believes in the idea that it takes a village to raise a child and that village should provide every resource a child needs.

Leading the digital forum was RISE San Diego President Tony Young. He began the hour by giving out a general statement to think about: “When you look back on 2020, what did you do?”

He continued by asking each panelist about their daily challenges. Dr. Paul Gothold didn’t hesitate in his answer: when he wakes up, he knows he is responsible for 42 school districts and over 100 charter schools. Dr. Fabiola Bagula expanded on this notion by saying she feels her job is “in service representing the kids of San Diego County.” The challenges she

COVID-19 has shown a spotlight on the gaps in these resources, whether it’s emotional or physical. Problems that were looked over before are now being brought to the forefront in the wake of long distance learning. Children are facing complex issues at home that highlight the need for education to go beyond academics.

“Much like Tamara was saying about the whole village,” Dr. Bagula says, “Right now, is the demand for the whole village and we’re seeing it…

[COVID-19] has forced us to say, how are you going to work together to improve conditions for everyone?”

The main question of the night was “How do we continue to improve education after COVID-19?”

Dr. Bagula highlights the importance of understanding the collective disruption that COVID-19 has had on everyone’s lives, not just students. Her solution has been in online workshops that teach districts how to cope with new stressors and how to handle the different difficulties a student may be facing during this pandemic.

She stresses that compassion for all is a key component for moving education forward.

Muhammad has seen firsthand how COVID-19 has affected teachers at her school and the new challenges they face. She says this shake-up in normalcy has forced teachers to become innovative in the way they teach and connect with their students—something that all not all teachers cared to do before. Her new approach is to tell teachers to do what feels most natural and above all, teach.

“A lot of people lost that prior to COVID. They were going through the motion, they were looking at the curriculum and following pacing guides, they weren’t connecting with students.

Now, we have to make a concerted effort to connect with a student…I can’t see them face to face,” Says Muhammad. “That’s the part that needs to stick, what was in their heart.”

An assembly of power brokers came together to announce a newly created Black Community Investment Fund spearheaded by The San Diego Foundation and its President and CEO, Mark A. Stuart. The fund will invest in community-led, innovative efforts that increase racial equity and generational wealth for Black San Diegans.

It’s time for us to enjoy the American dream, because we really haven’t been, after building this country for 400 years.”

Knowledge is power and is the key to effectuate change.

COMMUNITY NEWS 98 Local Churches Unite To Pray Over San Diego Schools and Students

Pastor Miles McPherson, the Rock Church Senior Pastor, had this to say just days before the event took place: “Everyone, young and old, is experiencing the weight of the COVID-19, racial division and the unknown surrounding the future. Some are feeling alone, isolated and without hope. We want all those people to know that we see you. The community sees you. But most of all, God sees you and loves you.

We will be praying for God’s blessing to be poured out on our city, state and nation. As students have been returning to school recently, we know that teachers, parents, and educators need our support.”

Congressman Juan Hidalgo, Councilmembers District 4-Mike Diaz, District 4; and Chris Cate, District 6; National City Police Chief Jose Tellez and National City Police Chief Jose Tellez were in attendance, along with school representatives, families and teachers for a morning of prayer.

“Our community is in desperate need of physical help and spiritual hope. From the loss of jobs, financial distress and food insecurity, our communities are facing challenges daily. And now as we start the school year, families, teachers and students are faced with even more pressures whether they are learning virtually or returning to the classroom,” shared Abel Isaac Ledezma, Centro Familiar Cristiano Church.

“I believe that everyone cares about the health and well-being of our youth and their education! The We Pray San Diego focus on schools is a significant opportunity for people of faith to come together and make a positive impact by praying for our children, our families, our teachers, and the schools in our communities,” said Daryl Nuss of the National Network of Youth Ministries.

Individuals were encouraged to pray along streets, sidewalks and green spaces at the school sites where the prayer vigil took place, while observing social distancing measures, including wearing a face covering and keeping 6 feet apart. People also participated from their homes.

All in support of local schools and communities who may be experiencing untold stressors and fears surrounding COVID-19related sickness and financial instability along with the recent racial divisions affecting many households in recent months.

SOUL SWAP MEET FINDS

SUCCESS IN NEW LOCATION

The Soul Swap Meet has been up and running since 2018. Until now it has been one of San Diego’s best kept secrets. No longer is this the case.

Once held south of Interstate 8, the Soul Swap Meet started at its new location from 10am3pm at 8253 Ronson Rd in Kearny Mesa on September 19th at a largely commercial industrial area which has a variety of Asian restaurants and grocery stores. There are also enough craft breweries and outdoor shopping spots to satisfy the COVID-19 conditions San Diego is experiencing. It’s the perfect venue to pick up an assortment of goods and products that you need or didn’t know you needed.

Thanks to a most enterprising and inspiring young African American woman, Shala Waines, a beautiful opportunity has emerged for lots of entrepreneurs who look just like her, to a great degree. Ms. Waines is the creator of the Soul Swap Meet, which gives people of all races a chance to support African American vendors in a time when they need it most, during an economic crisis that is disproportionately impacting the African American community.

On September 19th the Soul Swap Meet was comprised of 42 vendors, one as young as 15 years old. The products ranged from candles to clothing and everything in between. These items will be available for sale each month. Future Soul Swap meets will be held on the following dates: October 17th, November 21st, December 5th and December 19th from 10am-3pm.

Ms. Waines believes everyone should be an entrepreneur and she is doing her part to build generational wealth among people who look like her. You all are invited to come out and support these amazing and hardworking vendors.

Those are the two sides of a debate roiling Nigeria following passage of an amendment to a law that orders convicted rapists to be surgically castrated if a man, or have their fallopian tubes removed, if a woman.

If the victim is under 14, the rapist will have his testicles surgically removed before being executed, under the legislation signed by the governor of Kaduna state last week.

“Drastic sanctions are needed to help further protect children from serious crime,” insisted the governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

The dimensions of the rape problem in Nigeria are disturbing to say the least. Last December, the minister for women’s affairs testified

that two million women and girls were raped in the country each year. Then in June she said that the number of rapes had spiked to three times the typical rate, because women and girls were locked down with their abusers during the coronavirus pandemic.

A DICTATOR PASSES IN MALI AND GETS A STATE FUNERAL

By Global Information Network When Mali’s ex-dictator Moussa Traore passed away this week at age 83, some might have expected a private affair for the man who seized power from Mali’s “father of independence”, in 1961, who tore up the Constitution, placed the country under martial law and set up an even more repressive system, eliminating his rivals until he himself was ousted by fellow soldiers.

After the coup of March 26, 1991, Traore was imprisoned and sentenced to death in 1993. Alpha Oumar Konare, president from 1992 to 2002, commuted Traore’s sentence to life imprisonment and finally pardoned him in 2002.

But rather than a quiet affair, the one-time autocrat received a formal state funeral with soldiers standing at attention in full regalia

at a Bamako military camp. There was a soundtrack of a funeral band at the arrival of his coffin, draped in the green, gold and red Malian flag.

When can people enroll in a Medicare plan?

You have a seven-month window around your 65th birthday to enroll. It’s best to sign up early to avoid gaps in coverage and late enrollment penalties.

For people already enrolled in Medicare, Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, and allows you to make changes to your plan or enroll in a new plan. If you have a qualifying life event, like a move, you can get a special enrollment period to switch plans during the year.

What should people think about as they compare their Medicare coverage options?

You need to take the time to explore your options and understand the benefits and costs of each plan. I suggest asking a few key questions such as: • Is your current coverage

RESCUE OF “JERRY” HENRY BY AN INTEGRATED PROTEST MOB On the first of October 1851, William “Jerry” Henry, an escaped slave and cooper residing in Syracuse, was arrested by federal marshals under the terms of the Fugitive Slave Law passed in September of 1850. He was brought before U.S. commissioner Joseph Sabine. A first attempt to free him by abolitionists occurred, and he was able to escape from the building and flee over the Erie Canal, but was recaptured and delivered to the city jail. The abolitionist Liberty Party was holding a state convention in Syracuse, and when the arrest became known, an integrated crowd of approximately twenty-five hundred people stormed the city jail and freed Henry. A few shots were fired, but the sheer force of the crowd daunted the officers. Jerry was hidden in the city until he was transported to Kingston, Ontario, where he remained until his death. “The Jerry Rescue” was celebrated as one of the great triumphs of the antislavery movement.

1951 DISSOLUTION OF THE LAST U.S. “BUFFALO SOLDIER” REGIMENT The 24th Infantry Regiment, was one of the all-Black military units authorized by Congress in 1866. September 15, 1951, marked the last significant attack conducted by the 24th Infantry. On 22 September, in the midst of the Korean War, the regiment received formal notice that on October 1st, the 14th Infantry regiment would replace them on the front line and the 24th would cease to exist as a unit. Poor leadership and heavy losses on the Korean peninsula had severely damaged the unit’s reputation, though there were instances of daring victories, as well. For a time, some thought the 24th might remain in Korea as an integrated force. In the end, however, the Far East Command rejected the plan. The reason given was that integration would have violated the 1866 act of Congress that had designated the 24th as an all-black unit. In the end, all of the remaining Black units were integrated and only the 24th Infantry, because of its peculiar legal status, ceased to exist.

Andrea Perez and Sylvester Davis, both Catholics, applied for a marriage license with the County Clerk of Los Angeles. At the time, under California law, individuals of Mexican ancestry were classified as White. On the application for the marriage license, Perez was listed as “White” and Davis was listed as “Negro”. The County Clerk refused to issue the license based on California Civil Code Sections 60 and 69. California’s anti-miscegenation statute had banned interracial marriage since 1850.

Perez petitioned the California Supreme Court to compel the issuance of the license. Perez v. Sharp held by a 4–3 majority that California’s ban on interracial marriage violated both the Fourteenth Amendment and the religious freedom of the plaintiffs. The opinion made California the first state to strike down an anti-miscegenation law in the United States.
