PLAYBILL

WELCOME to the opening production of our 100th Season: Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party! We are thrilled that you have joined us for another outstanding production in a long tradition of excellence spanning the past century. Throughout our 100th Season, we will illuminate the breadth of theatre at SDSU by highlighting the diverse areas that contribute to our productions. This production celebrates the excitement, artistry, and exceptional training of our Musical Theatre programs. Founded in 1982, the MFA Musical Theatre program has been preparing artist-scholars for more than 40 years. It is especially meaningful that alumna Courtney Corey (‘26) is directing tonight’s production. The cast features the newest class of MFA Musical Theatre students, along with many students from our BA Musical Theatre program. Our BA in Musical Theatre, the School’s newest degree program, was established in 2024. It provides students with broad-based, professional training that is rare in the field. I offer my deepest gratitude to Professor and Head of Musical Theatre Robert Meffe, who championed the creation of this new degree and continues to lead the area with inspired vision and dedication. My thanks also go to all of the faculty and staff who teach, mentor, and support these two extraordinary programs. Tonight’s production takes us back to the 1920s—a time of debauchery, excess, and wild abandon. It is fitting that we begin our 100th Season in the very decade when our production program was born. I look forward to sharing the rest of this remarkable season with you as we celebrate the faculty, staff, and students who make theatre at SDSU shine!

Stephen Brotebeck, Director School of Theatre, Television, and Film

DIRECTOR’S NOTE In 1926, Joseph Moncure March left his position as the first managing editor of the fledgling magazine The New Yorker to pursue a full-time writing career. He began this new chapter in his life with a rhyming couplet:

“Queenie was a blonde, and her age stood still, And she danced twice a day in vaudeville.” Over the course of that summer, he expanded those two lines into a sizzling narrative poem, driven by an intoxicating rhythm and filled with vivid, jaw-dropping details of a wild night that ends in destruction for some and profound release for others. At the time, the United States was in the midst of a thirteen-year period of nationwide Prohibition. Americans were well acquainted with the deep reach of government and social authority, which extended into their homes, habits, private choices, and everyday pleasures, dictating what they could consume and what was supposedly “good for them.” Perhaps this intense desire to push against pressure and constraint compelled March to write with such uninhibited daring. While the poem explored what might happen in the shadows of a censored society, March’s own efforts to place it in the hands of the public also encountered the force of censorship. Initially deemed “too hot to publish,” the poem finally appeared in 1928 in a limited edition of just 750 copies. Subsequent editions followed, but many were altered, excising much of the poem’s original heat. In 1994, illustrator and graphic novelist Art Spiegelman, who was, coincidentally, a contributing editor at The New Yorker, revived March’s now-public-domain poem in a fully uncensored edition featuring his striking black-and-white expressionist drawings. That edition eventually found its way into the hands of composer Andrew Lippa, who transformed March’s story into a jazz-infused contemporary pop-rock score, reimagining the poem for the modern musical theatre stage. After its Off-Broadway premiere in 2000 featuring Julia Murney, Brian d’Arcy James, Idina Menzel, and Taye Diggs, The Wild Party quickly became a cult classic.

And here we are, one hundred years after the original poem was written, producing this complex story on the Main Stage at San Diego State University. In an era when political and societal tensions may be exerting a gripping, stifling pressure of their own, perhaps it is time for us all to release the valve and let our hearts pulse to a collective, rebellious beat for a couple of hours. I invite you to enter The Wild Party with us as we lift the veil of propriety and explore the many dimensions of what lies beneath. And, if tonight we offend, excite, prickle a nerve, or ruffle a few feathers, then perhaps we will have done our job. We will be carrying forward the legacy of a frustrated young writer who, one hundred years ago, dared to give voice to the forbidden. — Courtney Corey, Director

He attended the University of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1954 to 1956 and received a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Southern California in 1959. He taught at multiple universities, including Eastern Oregon State College, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Southern California, and was a member of the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1967 to 1996, where he mentored hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to have successful artistic careers. < Scan here to learn more about Marvin, his art, and to purchase paintings.

Take a Seat! SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign. You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.

The engraving you select promises that you or your loved one will be a visible part of this dynamic Performing Arts District for years to come.
