DIRECTOR PETER CIRINO graduated from UCSD with a Master of Fine Arts. He received his Bachelor of Arts degrees from Southwest Texas State University. After graduating from University California San Diego, Peter founded Planet Earth Multi-cultural Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, an alternative theater that produces avant-garde plays, late-night cabarets, traveling shows, and collaborative works. Peter has translated many classic Spanish works for English productions. Professional acting experience includes numerous Spanishlanguage commercials, films, and voice-over credits. Currently Peter is a professor at San Diego State University. He has also taught at UCSD, creating a series of student written plays and monologues. Additionally, Peter developed the curriculum for the Teatro Meta program at the Old Globe Theatre. Peter is the Artistic Director for the San Diego Asian-American Repertory Theatre, as well as co-founding TuYo Theatre, a Latinx company six years ago.

DRAMATURGS NOTE

Blood isn’t always thicker than water.

The House of Bernarda Alba is a dramatic tragedy that follows the journey of Bernarda and her five daughters through a period of mourning in Spain in 1936. Set in a matriarchal household, Bernarda rules with an iron fist, and the audience will witness the suffocating, repressed environment Bernarda’s daughters must live under. For Bernarda’s power, control and reputation is everything, and whatever she says must be obeyed. But she will soon find out that not everything is as it seems within the confines of her meticulously controlled world.

The play serves as a reminder of the consequences of denying one’s true self in the face of societal pressure. This can be seen through the experience of each of the five daughters, who are trapped in the same tyrannically ruled household, unable to pursue their own aspirations. The daughters, each with her own hopes, dreams, and desires, are all forced to navigate the treacherous waters of family duty and societal expectations. This story explores the complexities of female relationships, exposing the delicate balance between loyalty, rebellion, obedience, and defiance. The House of Bernarda Alba shows us the true nature of human relationships, revealing the fragile bonds that hold families together and the destructive forces that threaten to tear them apart. As tensions escalate and the façade of responsibility begins to crumble, the Alba family is forced to confront the painful truth that lies at the heart of their existence. In the haunting echoes of the play’s final moments, we are left to ponder the profound implications of our choices and the vulnerability of the human spirit to succumb to overwhelming challenges.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/DRAMATURG

ALONDRA ZUNIGA is a third-year Television, Film, and New Media student at SDSU, with a minor in Digital Journalism. She has previously worked on several student short films on and off-campus. She has a passion for screenwriting and performing. This is Alondra’s first time being a dramaturg and co-directing a play, she is excited for audience members to see all the hard work this amazing cast and crew has put into this production.

SCENIC DESIGNER ATRIA PIROUZMAND

is a Scenic and Production Designer. She’s in her second year of the MFA program at SDSU, majoring in Design and Technology. She earned her BA in Drama and Film and Media Studies from the University of California, Irvine, in 2022 with a minor in Digital Arts. Throughout her academic journey, Atria has co-designed scenery for productions such as Into The Woods, Love’s Labor’s Lost, Ziggy, Stardust & Me, and Los Malcriados

COSTUME DESIGNER CLAIRE PETERSON

(she/they) is a third year graduate student at San Diego State University in Costume Design. Her credits at San Diego State include Cabaret (2023), and A Raisin in the Sun (2022). Previous designs also include Man and Moon (MOXIE Theatre), The Fog (Montana Repertory Theatre). Claire has worked as an assistant at La Jolla Playhouse for several shows, including Sumo, The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical, and Love All. Instagram: @clairepetersondesign

LIGHTING DESIGNER MARY ASHLEY

FULTON is a candidate for an MFA in Lighting Design at SDSU. She joins the Aztec community from Rollins College (Theatre Arts—BA, Critical Media and Cultural Studies—BA). She is excited to be bringing the poetry of Lorca to light. Thanks to her family and her boyfriend for their constant support. She would also like to thank Kevin Griffin for putting her in the box booms on her first day of Electrics Crew.

MANAGER ELIZABETH PITTOORS Lizzy is a graduate of the Orange County School of the Arts, Production and Design Conservatory. She particularly enjoyed stage managing Legally Blond: The Musical and working as Costume Designer for Mamma Mia, a production with over 200 costumes, for which she also designed and made the iconic Abba-inspired costumes. In her spare time, she sews, reads, rides horses, and leads trail rides. Lizzy is a freshman and this is her first production at SDSU.

Sarah Anderson (Maid)

Sarah is very excited for her debut show at SDSU! Her recent credits include being in student films made here at SDSU, and an upcoming MFA Thesis Film. Her stage credits include Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, and Cosette in Les Miserables. Hope you enjoy the show!

Bianca Ibarra-Olalde (La Poncia)

Bianca is a freshman at SDSU and very excited to be a part of The House of Bernarda Alba. This is her first play in the department and is incredibly grateful for the opportunity. Past roles of hers include Meg in Little Women, Martha in The Children’s Hour, and Lela in Teen Beach Movie for the SDSU MTC’s 24-hour musical. She’d like to thank the cast and crew for making this an unforgettable experience

Skyzx Labastilla (Bernarda Alba)

Skyzx “Ski-ziks” Labastilla, a first-year MA in Theatre Arts student, holds a BA in Art Studies from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She worked as a performing arts coordinator for over a decade and has top-billed lead and supporting roles in over 60 plays/films in Filipino and Cebuano languages. The House of Bernarda Alba is her first play in English. In 2018, the Aliw Awards awarded her best actress for a 2-hour solo performance portraying twenty characters in a Filipino adaptation of A Girl is a Half-formed Thing. She dedicates this performance to her family, the SDSU community, and those who feel they don’t have a voice.

Amanda Tran (Prudencia)

Amanda Tran is currently pursuing a major degree in Biology (BS) in addition to a minor in Theatre Arts. She started acting at the age of thirteen with the Professional School for the Arts, located in Torrance, California. The House of Bernarda Alba is the very first production she has ever worked on. She can’t wait to see everyone on stage and hopes that everyone enjoys the show!

Kennedy Garcia (Angustias)

This is Kennedy’s first show/year at San Diego State. She would like to thank her directors, castmates, and crew who worked so hard to put this show together. She would also like to thank her parents for supporting her and their sacrifices, along with her siblings for their love and friendship, and God for this opportunity. She is so excited and grateful to be a part of this production. She hopes you enjoy it.

Juliana Acevedo (Magdalena)

Juliana Acevedo (pronounced Huliana) is a third year student at SDSU. Previously on campus she played Moth in Love’s Labor’s Lost and Veronica in The Motherfucker with the Hat. As an English and Spanish major who grew up studying Lorca, as well as watching her older sister play Martirio, Juliana feels thrilled to be part of such a surreal and magical show that has meant so much to her. Que gocen, que disfruten, que lloren.

Olivia Gonzales (Amelia)

Olivia is a second year Theatre Arts, Performance major at SDSU and is thrilled to be in her third production, The House of Bernarda Alba, as Amelia. Olivia was seen as the Were-Jaguar Woman in The Weight of Dreams and as a Spider from Mars in Ziggy, Stardust & Me. Olivia has been acting on television and film since she was five years old and is currently a SAG actor. In addition to several theatre productions, Olivia has also been a competitive Hip-hop dancer and competed all throughout San Diego including Hip-Hop International and World of Dance. Olivia would like to thank her lovely and beautiful cast and crew for making this such a joyful experience. A true family has been made through this process and Olivia could not be more grateful. Mylah Anderson (Martirio)

Mylah is a second-year Theatre Arts, Performance major at SDSU. Her interest in theatre began as a sophomore in high school, and since then some of her works include 12 Angry Jurors (juror 12) and Xanadu (Calliope). She is very excited to be making her mainstage debut with The House of Bernarda Alba. She would like to give a special thanks to her roommate Hannah for helping her run lines and she hopes you all enjoy the show.

Sara Solorio (Adela)

Sara is a fourth-year Theatre Arts major at SDSU. Some of her most treasured productions have been Directing Little Women with Skull&Dagger, Costume Designing Rocky Horror for MTC, and playing Jasmine in Black Renaissance’s production of Pipeline. She’s beyond grateful for the opportunity to be trusted with Adela for her first main stage show. Special thanks to the sisters she made throughout the process. She hopes you enjoy this piece of Lorca!

Romy Stark (Maria Josefa)

Romy Stark is a first year Theatre Arts major and this is her first main stage production. She is beyond excited for you to watch the show and hopes you enjoy!

Larissa Carrasco (Chorus)

Larissa was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and came to the US to study at SDSU. She’s a professional dancer and is pursuing her BA in General Theatre Arts. Her first play where she found her passion in acting was in middle school. She has performed many plays during her life from famous writers such as Bertolt Brecht. She has also performed in some Brazilian plays by playwrights such as Jô Bilac. Since then, she has been dedicating her life to transforming the world through art.

The light bulbs in her apartment keep burning out; there’s a leak in the roof; the aquarium is full of dead fish; the cat’s gone AWOL, and her father—who chased off her last beau—is suspicious of Tom, their new neighbor, a TSA agent who just brought Sara home from the emergency room on New Year’s Eve with a fractured fifth metatarsal. As Tom’s attraction to Sara increases, he learns of the bizarre streak of bad luck that’s been haunting Sara for years—twenty-two years, to be precise.

Lucky Me

A masterpiece of the modern theater, The House of Bernarda Alba was written in 1936, just before the start of the Spanish Civil War. The play takes place in a small village in southern Spain following the funeral of Bernarda Alba’s second husband. After the mourners depart, the tyrannical matriarch announces to her five daughters that their period of mourning will last eight years. Obsessed with family honor, Bernarda rules the household with an iron fist, but all of her daughters secretly harbor a passion for Pepe el Romano, the handsomest man in the village. The eldest daughter is engaged to him, but the arrangement is a financial one, and it is the youngest daughter, Adela, who has a secret that threatens familial bonds. When the truth finally breaks through the atmosphere of suppressed desire, jealousy, anger, and fear, the consequences are tragic.

In A Sunshine State is a historical romance set in late 1950’s Florida during one of the most harrowing and untold moments in American queer history. Evelyn Pierce, a reclusive yet fiercely intelligent English professor, secretly falls in love with the strident new dean at her university, Betty Kincaid. The two set off on a path of self-discovery and bliss while a state committee and its corrosive chief officer investigate claims of Communism at the University, threatening their careers and their love affair.
