PLAYBILL

WELCOME Welcome to TTF’s first fully live Theatre production since the outbreak of Covid-19. We are extremely delighted that you are joining us, and supporting all efforts at returning to the age-old tradition of live theatre. Indeed, we have come to understand and appreciate the adage; “...you never realize what you have until it’s gone.” We have spent the past 18 months working at meaningful ways to maintain our craft, while providing our patrons and audience with rightly deserved world class productions, over the virtual platform. We highly appreciate your presence at this production and thank you for returning to support our work, as we present our musical production of Steel Pier. We acknowledge that there are many who are unable to join us at this place and at this moment. Not because they do not want to, but because the multitude of challenges caused by the pandemic has, in one way or another, interrupted their lives. We think of them now and pray that they will overcome the unexpected obstacles. Please enjoy Steel Pier, and continue to stay safe.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Steel Pier is a show that I have been enamored with since it premiered in 1997. Although I did not see the show, the Tony award performance and the cast recording have lived with me to this day. What is it about this show that has stayed with me for so long? Of course, the romantic and lush score by John Kander and Fred Ebb is one reason. The fact that I have been fascinated by the nonstop dance marathons of the 1920s and 30s is another. But recently I have thought about how relevant the subject matter of this show is to today. The dance marathon, where couples would dance for days, weeks, and even months on end, was born in the 1920s as Americans were obsessed with breaking records. Who could dance the longest? These eventually developed into entertainment spectacles during the depression era where amateurs off the street would dance side by side with celebrity dancers, all trying to win a cash prize for the couple still standing at the end. Sometimes they were rigged, other times as fair as they could be. So, how does this connect to 2021? In essence, these marathons were the first reality shows that Americans were able to experience. While this did not happen on television, listeners could follow along and cheer for their favorites on the radio and attend these marathons at any time during the day or night. Tonight, you are that audience. We have transformed the Main Stage theatre into the Marine Ballroom on the world famous Steel Pier in Atlantic City. As you follow the story of Rita and Bill, our emcee Mick, and all the couples who are fighting for the grand prize, immerse yourself in the spectacle and grit as the marathon dancers spin round and round, fighting for prestige and survival during one of the most difficult times in American history. Sound familiar?
