CMC Advising Appointments

Since transitioning back to campus in August 2021, advising appointments have been conducted both in-person and virtually via Zoom or phone.

The Career Management Center (CMC) team would like to thank you for your constant generosity to support the career readiness and professional development of Fowler students.

During the 2021 – 2022 academic year, we emerged from a global pandemic and transitioned from working from home back to campus, interacting with students inperson once again.

The CMC team returned to campus in August 2021 with excitement and optimism for the new academic year, ready to offer programs, resources, and services — not just inperson but also virtually — such as our career-readiness and career chat series and employer engagement events, which your gifts have supported.

STUDENT ADVISING APPOINTMENTS Three staff conducted 684 appointments in AY21-22 compared to 819 appointments by five staff in AY20-21.

More than 70% of these appointments were with juniors (21%) and seniors (51%).

Post-Appointment Survey Results

91% strongly agreed they gained information/resources to help accomplish their goals 95% strongly agreed they knew what steps to take next 100% are likely to recommend the CMC to a friend FCB Career Fairs

The Fall Career Fair was held virtually and was well-attended by both students and employers. In fact, employer participation increased 42% from the year prior. The Spring Career Fair returned to an in-person setting with even more employers in attendance.

Post-Graduation Surveys

Since the May 2019 graduating class, we have worked to establish a solid base of knowledge about where Fowler students land after graduation. The survey is conducted with each graduating class three times per year, beginning three months postgraduation. The AY 2021-22 survey had a 40% response rate, leading to a more complete and accurate picture of the employment outcomes of business graduates.

New Programs and Events

Making An Impact

August 2021

| Meet & Greet Welcome Back Three-Day Event

100+ FCB students met staff, participated in games that assessed their career-readiness knowledge, and received complimentary professional headshots.

Empower 1/2 Hour

We offered a six-session, 30-minute career readiness series called Empower ½ Hour in an in-person setting with a hybrid attendance option. The series was live streamed with HD conference cameras to engage students in the virtual space, allowing us to be innovative and transformative in the services we provide.

CMC Career Chat Series

We developed a Career Chat series with prominent business professionals discussing career paths in management consulting, corporate finance, data analytics, supply chain management, operations management, product management, project management and entrepreneurship.

Thank you for supporting career readiness programs, professional development workshops, and student/employer engagement events offered exclusively to majors in the Fowler College of Business.

Student Spotlight

Brenda Leon, MBA (first semester)

Reinstated the Industry Showcase Series

Students enjoyed a panel conversation about business career paths within various industries, followed by networking with guest panelists.

Working the Room: How to Network with Confidence at Events Interactive workshop offered in preparation for the Industry Showcase Series for students to learn the importance of networking as a proven asset for successful careers, the communication nuances of "working the room," and the diversity aspects of networking.

Biotech Industry Showcase Panel discussion with directors from Pfizer, BD, Dexcom, and Thermo Fisher Scientific to discuss business career paths in the biotech industry.

"As a graduate MBA student, I personally have benefitted from the Career Management Center in many ways. The center has served as an excellent resource to not only learn how to completely redesign my resume, but to incorporate important lifelong skills, such as strategic networking. Additionally, the professional guest speakers are a great way to get insight about future careers and meet potential employers. I have worked with Greg Tanneberger, who shows he cares about our success; his passion to help shines through with his coordination of events and attention to our needs. We are lucky to have the Career Management Center at San Diego State University."

The Career Management Center increased collaboration with other units across campus, such as the International Student Center, Career Services, Graduate Life and Diversity, the Fowler College of Business Council, and student organizations to bring expert guest speakers and panelists to campus for professional development seminars:

Exploring Tech Careers for Non-Technical

Students

Participants explored 10 tech jobs that don’t require coding, learned the importance of building connections with alumni tech insiders, and reviewed how tech recruiters assess candidates and how to prepare for interviews based on hiring data.

A DM a Day Keeps the Imposter Syndrome Away

Students discovered how to find mentors, make courageous connections, and say goodbye to the imposter syndrome.

Identity and Belonging in the Professional World

Participants discussed what values to look for in employers, how to find a supportive workplace, and how to elevate themselves and their careers.

Developing and Driving Your Brand

Students learned how to build and drive their brand narrative.

Is Sales a Dirty Word?

Keynote speaker Edwin Baldry provided an approachable and thought-provoking message to energize and inspire students interested in careers in sales.

Overcoming Obstacles: Job Search for International Students featured an engaging panel of alumni who went through the job search process in the U.S. in the business and STEM fields as international students at SDSU and CSUSM. The session dove into obstacles related to sponsorship, networking, and how to leverage the international student experience.
