Impact of YOUR Philanthropy Guardian Scholars Program Impact Report 2021

Message from the Vice President I hope this message finds you healthy and well. On behalf of San Diego State University and the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, we extend our gratitude for your support of the SDSU Guardian Scholars Program. Effective June 1st, I assumed the role of Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. The division’s main priorities are ensuring the quality of the SDSU student experience and enhancing diversity within the pathways through higher education, while fostering and affirming a campus culture based on the core values of excellence, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Guardian Scholars Program holds a special place, not only at SDSU, but for me as well. My twin brother and I were former foster youth. We were born when our mother was incarcerated and became immediate wards of the court and placed in foster care. We were fortunate enough to be adopted by a foster family, where we grew up with 12 brothers and sisters. Not only do I empathize with our students, but I can relate directly to their experiences. As COVID-19 has positioned our campus in a very unique circumstance, we were able to determine that we will provide housing for students within the detailed restrictions of the San Diego County’s Center for Disease Control. In doing so, our campus will house students at half capacity, approximately 3,500 beds. Of the individuals prioritized to live on campus, Guardian Scholars are considered as the most critical of our student population. Your support ensures that our Guardian Scholars are engaged in the campus community and are more likely to continue attending and succeed in college, which results in an increase in graduation rates and improved quality of life for students post-graduation. We hope you enjoy learning of their recent achievements and know they appreciate the impact you continue to have on their lives. Thank you for all you do for San Diego State University. Warm Regards,

Dr. J. Luke Wood, Vice President for Division of SACD and Chair of Diversity San Diego State University

GS Funding

Academic Year 2020-2021 With the generosity of private philanthropy and state funding, we are able to provide scholarships to support the academic journey of Guardian Scholar students. This funding continues to impact their lives each and every day. Housing | A Transformational Experience SDSU's innovative collaboration with the San Diego Housing Commission and Urban Development (HUD) highlights the tremendous impact public/private partnerships can provide for our region's most vulnerable young adults. Residing on campus provides opportunities for students to have access to learning communities and the ability to engage and participate in co-curricular experiences and high-impact practices. Additional benefits include: Guardian Scholars students are able to focus on their academic studies within a stable living environment, often for the first time in their lives. Research shows that students who live on campus have higher GPAs, higher retention rates, and can complete their degrees faster than those who live off campus. By focusing on our Guardian Scholars students' basic needs of housing and food insecurities, we ensure they have the support and services needed to maintain maximum focus to achieve their educational goals. Student Housing Testimonials . . . allowed me to have someplace to call home while I am attending school and gives me a place to stay over the summer instead of being lost and not having a place to stay. - Rene, Junior

. . . helped me transition back into a full-time student after a leave of absence as well as making on-campus resources easily available. - Jaquelin, Senior

. . . As an undergrad, I am able to concentrate on my research without having to worry about my housing, which is a HUGE part of what sets Guardian Scholars in its own league. With the support of our donors and staff, this program will continue to reach students like myself who just need a chance to create a better future. - Oscar, Senior
