At this year’s Senior Design Day, students demonstrated what is possible when creativity meets purpose. From advancing safety solutions to exploring technologies with far-reaching applications, their work reflects both technical excellence and a commitment to solving meaningful challenges.

Over the past year, we expanded hands-on learning, strengthened collaboration in areas such as AI and smart infrastructure, and deepened student engagement. These efforts prepare our graduates to lead in fields shaping the future, including renewable energy, robotics, and resilient systems.

Propelling the SDSU Community Forward Endowment Created to Support Aztec Electric Racing Aztec Electric Racing celebrated its 10th anniversary with an elevated experience for donors at The Thermal Club in Thermal, California. During the event, loyal SDSU alumni and friends collectively established an endowment for the student organization.

Comprising more than 80 students, primarily from the College of Engineering, Aztec Electric Racing will use the funds to support the design and build of its vehicle, as well as travel costs associated with competitions and related program needs. The student organization has more than 200 active members and, in its 10-year history, has built nine vehicles.

SDSU Day of Giving 2026 Generous contributions from alumni, friends, and corporate partners propelled the College of Engineering to the top of the leaderboard during SDSU’s annual Day of Giving in March.

The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program received the highest level of support, followed by Aztec Electric Racing and the Space Club. This marks the third consecutive year the College of Engineering has led all colleges in Day of Giving contributions.

Thriving in the Aztec Experience Julie Hong, Class of 2026 Class Level: Undergraduate Student College: College of Engineering Major: Mechanical Engineering

My seven-year journey at SDSU has been filled with unexpected hurdles. I navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, the loss of my mother, a difficult transition back from studying abroad, and the unique challenges of being a first-generation, female, engineering student. I owe much of my success to the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program, which has played a major role in my academic, professional, and personal growth by providing access to leadership conferences, industry tours, scholarships, research opportunities, tutoring support, and a strong support network.

I am deeply grateful for the scholarships I've received through this program, including the Paul Stuverud Endowed MESA Scholarship. Thanks to Mr. Stuverud’s generosity, the scholarship helped ease the financial burden of my education and allowed me to focus on my academic and professional development.

I had the opportunity to become involved in undergraduate research, leadership roles, and student organizations that helped shape me into a well-rounded student. I cannot thank the MESA Program enough for helping me get to where I am today, and one day, I look forward to giving back to this community to help future students achieve their goals.

Charlie Chavez Meeboom, Class of 2028 Class Level: Undergraduate Student College: College of Engineering Major: Mechanical Engineering/Math, Finance

Having the opportunity to learn, grow, and work alongside students, professors, and faculty at SDSU’s College of Engineering has been an unforgettable part of my academic journey. The heart of the program lies in the clubs and research opportunities made possible by SDSU and its donors.

One of the most meaningful parts of my experience has been Aztec Electric Racing (AER). Through AER, I helped design the cooling and drivetrain systems for our electric race car, applying classroom knowledge to a real engineering challenge. Contributing to the full design process showed me how donor support connects students to impactful, hands-on projects.

Research has been equally transformative. In my second semester, Dr. Zahra Nili Ahmadabadi welcomed me into her lab, where I worked on next-generation autonomous underwater vehicles. This experience exposed me to coding, electronics, and autonomous systems, pushing me beyond mechanical engineering and expanding my technical skills.

Points of Pride

Celebrating Shared Success Recent Highlights Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Chunting (Chris) Mi was recognized as one of the world’s Highly Cited Researchers 2025 by Clarivate’s Web of Science, placing him among the top 1% of scientists worldwide for exceptional research influence and citation impact. In addition, the California State University System named him the system’s outstanding faculty award recipient.

Assistant Professor in Coastal Engineering Ignacio Sepúlveda was published in the March 2026 issue of Science, one of the world’s top peer-reviewed academic journals. In collaboration with researchers in three nations, Sepúlveda used satellite observations to capture tsunami details that are often difficult to measure with traditional tools.

Expert on the integration of innovative digital, robotic, and AI systems in construction engineering and Associate Professor in Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Reza Akhavian has been named the inaugural recipient of the Jim Ryan Endowed Chair in Construction Management.

The College of Engineering was awarded a $4.5 million National Science Foundation grant to help ensure graduate education keeps up with the new kinds of training and research needed to make use of these innovative digital, robotic, and AI systems. The five-year grant is among the very first awarded through a new Research Traineeship institutional pilot program at NSF and will create a certificate program and ultimately a new master’s degree at SDSU. Dr. Reza Akhavian is the principal investigator.

Aerospace Engineering Senior Design students developed Ember Eye, a lightweight, longendurance unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with thermal imaging to detect heat signatures from missing persons and emerging wildfire hotspots. Designed to be affordable and easy to deploy, the system reflects the College of Engineering’s emphasis on practical, real-world solutions.

Engineering received a $4.5M NSF grant to advance graduate training in digital, robotic, and AI systems through a new certificate program and master’s degree.

Transforming Lives Elisa Torresani, Ph.D. Title: Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering College: College of Engineering

Achievements: Recently awarded a grant as principal investigator from the Keck Foundation for the project “New Materials Processing via Electro-Nano-Pulsing (ENP),” Dr. Elisa Torresani also received the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Research Initiation (ERI) award for her work combining additive manufacturing and spark plasma sintering to create complex, high-temperature alloyed components.

Dr. Torresani’s research focuses on the fundamental understanding of sintering and the development of constitutive models that predict the macroscopic and microscopic behavior of porous bodies. Her innovative approach emphasizes the coupling of experimental and theoretical investigations to advance sintering-assisted additive manufacturing and field-assisted sintering processes. Since joining SDSU, she has secured significant funding to drive this research forward and has had 30 total publications.

Dr. Torresani’s research is garnering increasing interest from industrial and federal agencies due to critical applications in strategic sectors like energy, aerospace, and biomaterials. She was honored with the prestigious TMS-AIME Champion H. Mathewson Award during TMS2022 for notable contributions to metallurgy and materials science.

Faculty and Staff Achievements

Ignacio Sepulveda Oyarzun, Ph.D. M.Sc Title: Assistant Professor, Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department College: College of Engineering

Achievements: The SDSU Coastal Engineering Lab led a major discovery, showing how satellite measurements of tsunami waves can improve understanding of subduction zone earthquakes. The study, focused on the 2025 Kamchatka earthquake, was published in Science.

Dr. Ignacio Sepúlveda founded the Coastal Engineering Lab at SDSU in 2021 to study coastal hazards from their origin and to train students to address the emerging threats facing coastal communities. His work is grounded in the belief that advances in fundamental science are essential to preparing future communities to be resilient, especially as coastal populations continue to grow and climate change intensifies risk.

Through the lab, Dr. Sepúlveda has built a research program that combines fundamental science, engineering, and technology to better understand coastal hazards and develop new tools for a safer future. This includes research on major events such as the Tonga eruption and tsunami, which highlighted the global complexity of coastal hazards, as well as efforts to improve the way water levels and coastal processes are observed through new measurement techniques, including GPS antennas. His group has also led important accomplishments, such as a first-author Science paper and rare measurements of tsunami behavior in estuaries.

For Dr. Sepúlveda, one of the most meaningful aspects of his work at SDSU has been preparing students with strong technical and analytical skills while involving them directly in the creation of new science and new tools. He is proud that the Coastal Engineering Lab contributes both to fundamental understanding and to the long-term resilience of coastal communities.

Faculty and Staff Achievements

Karen May-Newman, Ph.D. Title: Professor, Mechanical Engineering College: College of Engineering

Achievements: Dr. Karen May-Newman has been named the 2026 recipient of the Pushpa and Kewal Gupta Lifetime Achievement Award in the Development of Therapies for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases from the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO)—one of the field’s most prestigious honors.

This award recognizes Dr. May-Newman’s decades of contributions to cardiovascular biomechanics, particularly her research on how implanted medical devices, such as heart valves and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), interact with human physiology. Her work has helped shape the development of life-saving mechanical circulatory support therapies.

Dr. May-Newman earned her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UC San Diego and completed postdoctoral training in Cardiology at Johns Hopkins University before joining SDSU in 1998, where she founded the university’s bioengineering program. Her research has been supported by the NIH, NSF, and the Whitaker Foundation, among others.

A dedicated mentor, she serves as faculty advisor to SDSU’s student chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society. Dr. May-Newman’s lifetime achievement recognition is a testament to SDSU’s impact on human health and the strength of our faculty’s nationally recognized scholarship.

SDSU Rocket Project Rocket Project (RP) at San Diego State University is a diverse, studentled collegiate rocketry team focused on providing hands-on aerospace engineering experience through the design, testing, and launch of experimental rockets and related technologies.

RP equips students with practical skills directly applicable to careers in aerospace and other engineering industries while fostering innovation, technical excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The team is organized into multiple technical sections, allowing members to develop specialized expertise and contribute to complex engineering projects.

Over the past year, RP achieved several major technical milestones, beginning with initial design work in September. The team progressed through design, manufacturing, integration, and testing on an accelerated timeline, culminating in the successful launch of Tezcatlipoca on April 25 to an altitude exceeding 35,000 feet and speeds over Mach 1.8.

In parallel, RP conducted an engine maximization campaign focused on increasing chamber pressure and thrust performance. Through this effort, the team became the first student organization to successfully refly a flight-proven, regeneratively cooled liquid rocket engine, demonstrating the reliability and sophistication of its propulsion system.

These accomplishments, achieved within a single academic year, showcase the team’s engineering capabilities, rapid development process, and potential to contribute to the future of aerospace innovation.

RP’s solid propulsion division, Team Icarus, also designed, built, and launched three dedicated test-bed rockets to evaluate advanced recovery systems and staging capabilities. These flights provided critical validation data for parachute deployment reliability, flight sequencing, and recovery performance, significantly advancing the team’s flight safety and mission capability for future high-power, solid rocket missions.

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program In fall 2025, through our annual Shadow Day program, 153 STEM students had the unique opportunity to spend the day at 17 tech companies throughout San Diego County. This immersive experience allowed students to witness the real world of work across a variety of engineering and scientific environments, helping them connect classroom learning to professional practice and envision their own futures in industry.

In the 2025-26 Academic Year, MESA distributed $54,000 in scholarships to deserving students, made possible through the generous support of our industry partners and alumni donors. These scholarships make a meaningful and lasting difference in students’ lives. By reducing financial stress, recipients are better able to focus on their academics, persist through the rigors of their curriculum, and fully engage in leadership opportunities and extracurricular activities that enrich their college experience.

Together, Shadow Day and MESA scholarships reflect the power of community investment in the next generation of engineers and scientists. Thanks to the continued generosity of our donors, students are more than surviving college — they are thriving.

Women in Construction The SDSU Women in Construction (WIC) Chapter experienced a year of exceptional growth and impact during the 2025-2026 Academic Year.

The chapter continued advancing its mission of supporting and empowering women pursuing careers in construction and engineering through more than 20 events this school year. Donor and industry support played a vital role in making these opportunities possible for students across the College of Engineering.

The chapter’s most significant accomplishment was the creation of the inaugural SDSU Women in Construction Week. Planned entirely by student leaders, WIC Week celebrated professional growth, wellness, networking, and community engagement. Events included a community service project with the San Diego National Women in Construction Chapter (NAWIC), a Pilates wellness event hosted with Performance Contracting Inc. (PCI), a donuts and coffee networking event with BNBuilders, an SDSU WIC Instagram takeover, and a site tour with Swinerton at the new Evolve Student Housing project on campus.

One of the featured events of the week was a guest speaker presentation by Vice President Cecilia Kucharski of Webcor, who shared her leadership journey and industry experience with students. WIC Week concluded with a career fair featuring Econ Construction, Hensel Phelps, and Greystar, providing students with valuable networking and internship opportunities. The career fair was followed by a professional panel featuring SDSU professors Dr. Thais Alves and Nensi Lakrori, alongside industry leaders Vice President Lori Ann Stevens of Turner Engineering and Senior Superintendent Catherine Osborne of Sundt Construction.

The success of SDSU’s first WIC Week demonstrated the chapter’s continued growth and leadership within the College of Engineering.

Through professional development, outreach, and industry engagement, the SDSU Women in Construction Chapter continues preparing students to become the next generation of leaders in the construction industry.

Senior Project On May 6, 2026, students came together in collaborative teams to research, design, and build a wide range of industry-sponsored projects under the guidance of faculty advisors. These hands-on experiences play a critical role in preparing graduates for successful careers as professional engineers.

This year’s Senior Design Day was once again our largest to date, showcasing nearly 100 innovative capstone projects representing all four departments within the College of Engineering. Many past projects have entered production and even receive patent recognition.

We welcomed an impressive 2,400 attendees, including industry partners, alumni, faculty, community members, and local high school students. With a record 631 students participating, the event highlighted the breadth, creativity, and real-world impact of our engineering programs. The strong engagement and support from attendees helped create a dynamic and memorable experience.

Aztec Baja Racing This year has been a major step forward for the SDSU Aztec Baja SAE team. Over the past year, the organization has undergone significant growth, both technically and organizationally, culminating in the development of a completely new Baja SAE vehicle for the 2025-26 competition season. The new car represents a full redesign effort focused on improving durability, suspension performance, drivetrain efficiency, manufacturability, and overall vehicle dynamics.

The team has placed a strong emphasis on in-house engineering and manufacturing, heavily involving students in the design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and validation of nearly every subsystem on the vehicle. Major developments include a redesigned chassis, updated suspension geometry, aerodynamic improvements, a major drivetrain regear, and the continued development of a fully custom CVT system tailored specifically to our competition goals.

One of the most exciting developments for the organization has been establishing a partnership with Fox Factory. Through this partnership, the team has been able to work with high-performance suspension components and further develop our understanding of suspension tuning, damping characteristics, and off-road vehicle dynamics. This partnership has provided invaluable educational opportunities for members while helping elevate the technical capabilities of the team and vehicle.

Beyond the car itself, the organization has continued expanding member involvement, professional development opportunities, and industry outreach. Team members have gained hands-on experience in CAD, machining, composites, manufacturing, data acquisition, testing, and systems integration while also building leadership and collaboration skills. The team has also increased sponsor engagement and strengthened alumni connections while continuing to represent SDSU at national Baja SAE competitions.

National Society of Black Engineers The 2025-26 Academic Year was a year of significant growth and new opportunities for the San Diego State University Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). A major development was the expansion of our professional development programming. This year, we hosted nine industry professionals at our general body meetings, a 125% increase from the four guest speakers hosted the previous year. These professionals provided members with career insights, mentorship, and networking opportunities that connected students directly with engineers and industry leaders.

Conference participation also reached new heights. Through fundraising and chapter support, we funded 25 students to attend the NSBE Fall Regional Conference in Oakland and 24 students to attend the NSBE National Convention in Baltimore. These experiences provided access to career fairs, professional workshops, and networking opportunities.

Several students secured internships and full-time job offers as a direct result of attending these conferences.

Member engagement continued to grow throughout the year.

Attendance at biweekly general body meetings consistently ranged from 38 to 50 students, representing an increase of approximately 65% compared to last year's average attendance of 23 members. We also expanded collaboration beyond SDSU. For the first time, we partnered with the University of San Diego NSBE chapter to host a Fall Regional Conference preparation event, strengthening relationships among NSBE chapters throughout the San Diego area.

Additionally, we collaborated with the World Computing Organization to host a discussion featuring Netflix Staff Software Engineer Desmon Vehard. Our digital presence grew significantly, with Instagram accounts reached increasing by 62.9% compared to the previous year. Overall, this year was defined by stronger partnerships, increased professional exposure, and greater member engagement, positioning our chapter for continued success and impact.

Society of Women Engineers The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at SDSU is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering female-identifying engineering students academically, professionally, and socially. Our mission is to equip members with the resources, support, and opportunities needed to thrive in their engineering careers while fostering a strong sense of community. Through SWE, members gain access to local industry connections, have the opportunity to earn scholarships offered by our organization, and make a meaningful impact on the next generation of engineers through community outreach events.

This year, our chapter achieved record-breaking growth in outreach, professional placement, and community engagement. We significantly expanded our SWENext initiative, totaling 20 hours of outreach volunteering across local middle and high schools. These efforts included supporting science fairs, conducting school visits, and hosting interactive campus tours and panels for prospective students.

Professionally, our flagship Evening of Professional Development (EPD) saw a surge in engagement, with 70 students connecting with major industry partners during a formal dinner and keynote session.

A major highlight of the year was taking a record 20 members on a fullyfunded trip to the Annual Women in Engineering Conference in New Orleans, LA. This experience provided invaluable networking opportunities, resulting in job and internship offers and fostering deep bonds within our membership. To maintain this momentum on campus, we hosted biweekly meetings with 20-30 recurring attendees, providing lunch alongside diverse workshops. These sessions covered critical career skills such as resume building, LinkedIn optimization, selfadvocacy, and financial literacy, as well as technical training in Ansys and PCB design.

By blending high-level professional exposure with a supportive social environment, SWE SDSU continues to build a more inclusive and technically proficient engineering community.
