Math for Good
The UNICEF math service project was a great way to utilize my math skills. Due to school being over for a while, my accuracy was really poor for the first few rounds, although I was able to get back into the swing of things. The math equations were very simple ranging from addition and subtraction problems, to basic algebra. I really enjoyed seeing how after every round, you got to see the amount of money you were able to donate. Slowly amassing a larger sum that would go to helping children in need. I went through dozens of rounds, which felt like taking a bunch of simple math tests, but I knew each equation that I answered was making a large impact.

For this service project, I spent a lot of time learning and practicing ASL not just for the script, but for other phrases as well. It was really fun practicing with my friends over facetime and watching them learn because they normally don’t speak ASL, and I’m sure it was fun for them to watch me struggle to re-learn a lot of stuff. I mostly worked with my cousin, Alondra Vasquez from Bonita Vista, and it was fun to watch her learn ASL when she never has before. I really enjoyed this service project mainly because I love how so many other people who are not hard of hearing or deaf were taking the time to not just learn the script, but to learn other ASL phrases too! I also enjoyed this service project because of how wonderful it is to be helping those in Yemen when I know most of us do not have the funds to donate. I hope that we do more projects that incorporate learning ASL, because I know a lot of individuals that want to learn it but just need a little push to start.

Welcome to SDSCPA

For this project, I recorded a short video of me talking to new and old SDSCPA students about the upcoming school year. This year will be very different due to ongoing world events, but I tried motivating people who’d see the video as best as I could by saying what I believe the school and its students are all about. I personally have not made a video for months now, so it was refreshing to just make a short clip like this. If I was to hear encouraging and motivating messages from a bunch of my peers, I’d feel more comfortable and ready for the year. I’m happy to contribute to this project and hope that the final product tells our intended messages of hope, inspiration, and motivation.
