In the last week of August children all over Australia channeled their literary alter egos with dress ups and parades and Samford Village was no different. FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, I’m taking the opportunity to slip this additional update in to ensure the timing of my regular monthly articles aligns with our monthly members’ general meeting (held every third Wednesday of the month).

Well, it’s goodbye Winter and hello Spring.

If you’re having a Spring clean-out at home, please spare a thought for those people who could benefit from pre-loved clothes or other items you no longer need. Consider a visit to our local Op Shops where you can donate items or simply pick up a bargain.

Also, I’d like to wish a Happy Father’s Day (6 September) to all the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and other valued male mentors.

Samford Progress updates Aircraft traffic The Samford Area Aircraft Action Group gave a presentation to members detailing the proposed multi-aircraft concentrated flight path directly over our valley and hinterland and the impacts for residents as flight numbers and frequency drastically increase.

Samford Village Green This project in the Samford Parklands is completed, with the formal opening by the Council held on Saturday 22 August. Also, the entrance to the area via the tennis courts end has now re-opened.

Pages in the Park Congratulations to everyone involved with this event held in John Scott Park.

There was a real community vibe in the air, and it was great to showcase the talents of so many authors and artists. The smiles on the children’s faces said it all.

Road safety Speeding on our roads and residential streets continues to be a community-wide concern, with members discussing how to increase awareness, including a more visible traffic police presence as a deterrent.

Council Rates Despite the Council having a 15% cap on annual rate increases, some residents are worried about the compounding effect of such increases over time.

improve recycling of common household waste items (e.g. phones, CDs and DVDs and blister packs) by Council introducing Recycling Hubs (similar to Brisbane City Council and some Officeworks stores).

Christmas in the Village Planning is well underway, with the promise of some new attractions. Make sure you put Saturday 5 December in your diary to attend this much-loved community event.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Following on from Kathy’s letter on wildlife awareness published in the 7 August newsletter, we would like to let people know that the same issues occur in the suburbs that border with Samford Valley, in particular Upper Kedron and The Gap. There have been a steady stream of wallaby deaths in both these suburbs over the past few years. Particular streets of concern that we are aware of are Lochinvar Rd and Ross Rd in Upper Kedron and Gap Creek Rd, The Gap. The main plea we would like to make is that you remain vigilant when driving through these areas and slow down if you see a wallaby by the side of the road.

Don’t assume that the wallaby watching you approach is going to stay there as you pass. Unfortunately, they have a habit of bolting unexpectedly in front of a car just as you get level with it. This is how many of the deaths occur. As Kathy said, let’s work together to keep our local wildlife and our community safe on the roads.

A fundamental aim of this exercise is to achieve a community-wide consensus on the issues that are important to the 4520-postcode community. These could then be the foundation for developing recommended actions or proposed solutions. This will of course rely very much on the willingness of locals to get involved. Many thanks to those people who have contributed to date.

SAMFORD FUTURE MAKING UPDATE A Future Making open invitation evening workshop was held on 29 July and identified several priority areas for potential action.

This follows on from written and verbal input from the community via a survey in the Village Pump and at the Samford Show, as well as individual and small group inputs from people in the community. It also builds on the back of a detailed review of the preparation and findings of the Samford Futures Report on the samfordfutures.org website.

The Future Making process can help build a picture of our local community’s needs and desired vision for its future. This in turn can be used to inform key decisions that shape our community, for example the City of Moreton Bay Council’s review of its Planning Scheme that is currently underway.

The workshop and other small group gatherings have enabled people to add value to the survey findings and highlight those aspects that people felt were important to

address.

There are hundreds of issues that reflect in detail the sentiments and aspirations of people who have engaged in the process to date. Work is continuing to sort through the suggestions received so far and arrange them into a manageable format. An initial sample (not exhaustive) of some emerging themes so far, is included below (in no order of priority). There are many more.

• Planning and development: reflective of country character, semi-rural lifestyle, green-lung brand, variety of residential block sizes, height limits, village charm, Main Street character.

• Electrification of Samford: sitting within a renewable energy strategy and sustainability umbrella, part of transition town and learning community concept.

• Community engagement: inclusive approach to engagement, community jury concept, engage youth, community organisations, give voice to disabled and less engaged.

• Biodiversity and habitat protection: safe habitats, natural corridors,

LOCAL NEWS COMMUNITY VISION REALISED WITH VIBRANT VILLAGE GREEN The new Samford Parklands Village Green has been officially opened to the public.

The versatile community space has open lawns for gatherings, shaded picnic shelters, a play space for children, and accessible walking paths with stunning valley views.

The project has been funded by the Australian Government’s Thriving Suburbs Program in partnership with City of Moreton Bay. A vibrant new community space is now open to the public at Samford, giving locals and visitors a versatile place to enjoy events and family gatherings, or simply relax and play.

With open lawns, shaded picnic shelters, a play space for children and accessible walking paths with stunning valley views, the Samford Parklands Village Green will encourage active lifestyles and strengthen community ties for generations to come.

The $5.8 million upgrade has incorporated community feedback and best-practice design to deliver a new multipurpose hub for events, recreation and social connection.

Samford Parklands Village Green was officially opened during a community celebration on 22 August.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the project was more than a park upgrade, creating a space where the community can come together for life’s celebrations and to enjoy the lifestyle that draws people to Samford.

“Samford Parklands Village Green now has open lawn areas for gatherings and events, barbecue and picnic facilities and landscaped gardens with shade trees,” Mayor Flannery said.

“It’s a beautiful setting and a place where

memories can be made for many years to come.

“We invited the community to provide feedback on the project vision from December 2020 and February 2021, and this was used to shape the final design.

“I’d like to acknowledge the Australian Government for supporting our shared vision for this important community space.”

The Samford Parklands Village Green project has been proudly funded by the Australian Government’s Thriving Suburbs Program ($2.28 million) in partnership with City of Moreton Bay ($3.5 million).

LOCAL NEWS Samford Rural Fire Brigade FIRE PERMITS AND BURNING Always remember if the vegetation to be burnt is more than 2M in any direction then a fire permit is required. A fire permit is not just a piece of paper. It is a legal document issued by a Fire Warden or Chief Fire Warden.

Serious penalties can be incurred for lighting a fire without a permit or not adhering to the permit conditions.

(Maximum 50 penalty units, $8345 or six months imprisonment).

It specifies the conditions (weather e.g. temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction) under which the fire can be lit and what preparation work is required.

A fire warden can impose specific conditions deemed necessary to safely manage, contain and control the fire. This includes the number of people on site, equipment to extinguish the fire or even the attendance of a local Rural Fire brigade.

The permit holder must notify Firecom

(1800 017 029) immediately prior to lighting.

The permit holder must notify the local Rural Fire Brigade or Fire Station (depending on locality) prior to lighting.

The permit holder must have a copy of the permit in their possession before lighting and until the fire is out.

Fire permits have an expiry date so contact the Fire Warden if it has expired.

Permits are only issued for burning vegetation including large area burns for hazard reduction, managing grazing lands, weed control, ecological purposes and collected vegetation (stacks).

Toxic or hazardous materials such as rubber tyres, plastics, paint and CCA treated timbers cannot be burnt.

If there is a Fire Ban in place, permits

may be suspended or cancelled. Not much is free today, but a fire permit is. If you are concerned about the fire behaviour or the fire has escaped beyond its boundaries, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Upon receiving a permit, it is important to carefully read and understand what is required before lighting. If you have any questions, contact your Fire Warden.

LOCAL NEWS CUB SCOUT TAKES ON THE WORLD Samford Scout Group’s Alex Ford has become the only current Cub Scout in Queensland to hold an amateur radio licence, and at ten years of age he has already used it to take on the world.

Alex earned his Foundation radio licence by sitting the same assessment as adults many times his age. Getting there meant studying a Scout’s course in electronics as well as operating practice and the regulations that govern the amateur bands, a solid amount of homework on top of school.

Amateur radio has a long and varied history. Operators are licensed to build and run their own stations and talk to people all over the globe without using the internet or the mobile network. That independence matters when everything else stops working and amateur operators have carried emergency traffic during earthquakes, cyclones, floods and bushfires when normal communications have gone

down. The hobby also reaches a fair way further than that, with amateurs regularly making contact with astronauts aboard the International Space Station as it passes overhead.

With his licence in hand, Alex joined a contest team operating from a station near Esk to compete in the CQ World Wide DX Contest, one of the largest amateur radio events on the calendar. Over a single weekend, tens of thousands of operators in more than a hundred countries compete to make as many contacts as possible with

as many parts of the world as they can, working around the clock as the bands open and close.

Alex took his turn at the microphone alongside experienced operators, contacting stations across Asia, North America and Europe from a paddock in the Brisbane Valley.

The team finished first in Australia, first in Oceania, and 30th in the world.

Closer to home, Alex has been putting the same skills to more practical use. He carries his radio on Cub hikes and acts as an emergency contact for the pack in country where mobile phone coverage thins out or disappears altogether, giving leaders a way to raise help that does not depend on bars on a phone.

It is a neat fit with Scouting, where preparation, self-reliance and looking after the people around you are good qualities.

Cub Scouts is open to children aged eight to eleven, with Samford Scout Group meeting weekly on Wednesdays at 6.30pm during school terms.

On 19 August, our birders recorded 70 species in about 3 hours following the usual route, which is an impressive total for late winter. An early highlight was seeing a platypus swimming in the river, which surprisingly was still there at 10.15am on the return leg.

Other notable sightings included a pair of Pacific Bazas soaring fairly low to the south, an Azure Kingfisher fly past to land of a branch overhanging the river, a pair of White-eared Monarchs near the waterhole, and all 3 local species of fairywren and all 3 ‘little brown jobs’ (White-browed and Largebilled Scrubwrens and Brown Thornbill).

Bushcare Our next Council-assisted bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 13 September from 2 to 4pm. The tasks we undertake will depend on the weather conditions from the time of writing (we may need to water plants if we don’t get the forecast showers).

There is always plenty of weeding to do, which takes 95% of our effort to keep the site in good condition. New volunteers are always welcome. Afterwards we will enjoy afternoon tea at the picnic table, kindly provided by Samford Progress.

CREATING AND CARING AT SAMFORD PLAYGROUP What an amazing couple of weeks it has been at Samford Playgroup. Our little friends have been busy learning, creating, exploring and caring for the world around them.

Earlier in the month, we celebrated Keep Australia Beautiful Week, we continued this theme with hands-on activities focused on caring for our environment. The children practised recycling and helped clean up a very messy pretend beach. They carefully sorted rubbish and cleared the sand and water to create a clean and safe home for our sea creatures. It was a wonderful way to introduce conversations about litter, recycling and the small things we can all do to look after our beautiful environment.

Our worm farm also received plenty of attention. The children recycled old fruit and vegetable scraps, using scissors to chop them into smaller pieces before giving our worms a delicious lunch. Along with strengthening fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination,

this activity helped children learn about food waste and composting. Our worm farm provides a fantastic opportunity for children to see a natural recycling system in action, discovering how worms can turn our food scraps into nutrient-rich castings that can help our gardens grow.

We were also very excited for the arrival of Book Week. Throughout the week, we were lucky to have some wonderful parents volunteer to read stories to the children.

Our farmyard and Three Little Pigs messyplay table had the exciting addition of mini bricks, encouraging children to build, create and retell the familiar story through their play.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar also made an appearance with some colourful messy play, while Bluey joined us at the playdough table for some beach-inspired fun. Children explored shells, sea-themed rollers and other loose parts as they created their own imaginative beach scenes. At our writing table, our friends became authors and illustrators, creating their very own storybooks. Sharing books together also encourages children to communicate their ideas, ask questions and develop a lifelong love of stories.

HEALTHY SPINE HEALTHY LIFE

On Sunday 16 August families, friends and supporters came together at New Farm Park for Run2Cure Brisbane 2026, raising vital funds and awareness for Neuroblastoma Australia and the children and families affected by this devastating childhood cancer.

Our local Team Chloe was incredibly proud to take part this year surrounded by an amazing group of family and friends.

Thanks to the generosity of our community Team Chloe raised an incredible $13,000, contributing to more than $145,000 raised at the event.

Chloe was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma in September 2024. Almost two years later, Chloe is still undergoing treatment and continues to face everything that comes her way with incredible strength and determination.

Samford residents Adam, Fiona, Anna and Chloe have experienced firsthand the enormous impact a childhood cancer diagnosis has on an entire family, as well as the importance of research, support and hope throughout the journey.

Neuroblastoma Australia is a charity dedicated to improving outcomes for children diagnosed with neuroblastoma, one of the most aggressive childhood cancers.

Through events such as Run2Cure, the organisation raises funds for vital research into better, more effective and less toxic treatments, while also providing information and support to families navigating a neuroblastoma diagnosis.

“Run2Cure is also an opportunity to bring families together to honour children who have faced neuroblastoma and remember those who are sadly no longer with us.

Seeing so many people taking part in support of these children was incredibly special,” said Chloe’s mum Fiona.

“We would like to take this opportunity to say how grateful we are to everyone from the Samford Valley community and beyond who supported Team Chloe,

AROUND THE VILLAGE CARING FOR JEWELLERY YOU LOVE Jewellery is often the most sentimental thing we own, an engagement ring, a grandmother’s wedding ring, a gift marking a milestone. Yet most pieces are worn daily for years without a second thought, until a stone goes missing or a clasp gives way. Why repairs and check-ups matter Like anything worn every day, jewellery experiences wear and tear. Many people don’t realise that standard home and contents policies only cover jewellery up to a modest limit, often less than the value of a single

He was passionate about science, researching the geology, shells and botany of Australia and writing many scientific papers. He also travelled further afield in Asia reporting on mineral and coal deposits.

He received the prestigious Clarke Medal in 1888 for his service to science.

BOOK WEEK CHAMPIONING THE JOY OF STORIES There are certain weeks in the school calendar that feel a little bit magical, and at Samford State School, Book Week is one of them.

For a few wonderful days, the characters usually tucked between the pages of books spill out into our classrooms, playgrounds and hallways. There are superheroes and witches, princesses and pirates, detectives, dragons and more than a few characters that leave the adults quietly asking, “Which book are you from?”

But beneath the costumes, parades and excitement, Book Week at Samford State School is really a celebration of something much bigger: the joy of stories, imagination and the people who help our children fall in love with reading.

And at the very heart of that is our wonderful librarian, Kerry Rosenberg.

Kerry is a qualified library technician who has worked in school libraries from primary through to high school. At Samford State School she works as a teacher aide in the library as well as supporting students across the school, including in classrooms and with interschool sport.

Her job description, however, doesn’t quite capture what Kerry means to our school.

Spend five minutes in the library with her and you’ll understand. Children’s faces genuinely light up when they see Kerry. She knows them, she knows books and perhaps most importantly, she has an extraordinary knack for knowing which child needs which story.

INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS Families from Samford and the surrounding communities gathered to celebrate storytelling in all its forms at the village’s new festival, Pages in the Park.

Kicking off Children’s Book Week, Pages in the Park brought together 20 local authors and creatives for an afternoon of arts, activities and imagination.

“We want to instil that love of reading,” co-founder Janette Zlamal says.

The festival transformed John Scott Park into something like a scene from a storybook, a dedicated space where children had the opportunity to express themselves surrounded by community.

Her ability to hold a room full of children completely captivated by a story is second to none. She brings books to life with warmth, humour and an infectious enthusiasm that reminds us that reading isn’t simply something children learn to do, it is something they can learn to absolutely love.

Book Week is, understandably, one of Kerry’s favourite times of the year.

“I especially enjoy Book Week because it brings books and reading to life in such a fun and exciting way,” she says. “Seeing the students dress up as their favourite characters and watching their excitement as they share their favourite stories.”

And this year, Samford certainly brought them to life.

Across the school, imaginations ran wild as students and staff embraced the celebrations, transforming familiar spaces and filling the school with colour, creativity and plenty of laughter.

Our Outside School Hours Care educator team took things to another level again, pouring an incredible amount of creativity, time and enthusiasm into bringing literary dreams to life. Their contribution helped turn Book Week from a celebration into an experience, the kind of school memory children carry with them long after the costumes have been packed away.

Author Eileen O’Hely believes giving children the opportunity to interact with authors lets them know storytelling is something achievable for the average person, just like them.

Author Jessica Galatol (pictured with Katherine Owens) credits her love for her craft to the creative environments she had access to at a young age. “It exposed me to the fact that these things exist and they’re important, and that I could do them,” she says.

An estimated 1000 people attended over the four hours. But for Janette, the true measure of success isn’t in numbers, it’s the immeasurable ripple effect.

“What ideas did these stories plant in young minds?”

Janette, along with the rest of the community, hopes this Pages in the Park is only the start, and that the next chapter is even better than its first.

BOOK WEEK

EVERY PERSON HAS A STORY TO TELL Samford Valley Steiner School came alive with colour, creativity and a shared love of reading during this year’s Book Week celebrations, inspired by the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s 2026 theme, Symphony of Stories. The theme encouraged students to reflect on the idea that every person has a story to tell. Just as each instrument contributes its own unique sound to an orchestra, every member of the school community brings their own experiences, perspectives and talents.

Together, these voices create the rich and vibrant story of the school.

The celebrations also provided an opportunity to recognise the long history of storytelling in Australia. Long before stories were written in books, First Nations peoples shared knowledge, culture and history through oral storytelling, song, dance and art. These traditions continue to connect people, culture and Country, demonstrating the enduring power of stories to teach, inspire and bring communities together.

A highlight of the week was a visit from acclaimed Queensland author and illustrator Peter Carnavas (pictured), whose books have delighted young readers across Australia and beyond. Known for his warmth, humour and deeply thoughtful storytelling, Carnavas worked with students across a number of year levels, sharing insights into the creative process behind his books and illustrations.

Students were fascinated to learn how stories often begin with the smallest spark of an idea, whether a memory, observation or feeling, before developing into fully realised characters and narratives. Through engaging and interactive workshops, Carnavas encouraged students to embrace creativity, curiosity and perseverance, inspiring many young writers and artists to begin exploring stories of their own.

Another much-loved feature of the week was the school’s Library Book Fair, held

in partnership with Baffies Oan Books.

Thanks to the strong support of the school community, the fair also raised funds that will help the library expand its collection for future generations of students.

One of the most anticipated events of Book Week was the Primary School Dress-Up Parade. Students brought favourite stories to life through imaginative costumes celebrating beloved literary characters and the joy that books inspire.

Adding a special dimension to the festivities, one of the school orchestras brought the Symphony of Stories theme to life through a performance that combined music and storytelling. Narratives about the pieces were shared with the audience, highlighting the powerful connection between music and story and demonstrating how different voices and talents can come together in harmony.

Book Week 2026 was a celebration of imagination, creativity, connection and community. The school extends its thanks to students, staff, families, volunteers, Baffies Oan Books, Peter Carnavas and the many performers who helped make the week such a memorable success.

Together, they reminded us that every story matters and that each of us has an important role to play in the continuing story of our school community.

SOMEONE HAD TO DO IT, SO WE DID Every show has to have an afterparty.

This is when cast and crew watch the video of themselves performing and take in in turns to wince, groan, laugh, clap and even boo. Before that we donated our profits to the wonderful local charity Stationery Aid on a lovely sunny morning at the Samford Markets.

SPADEwerx Theatre always donates the profits from its shows. So, we’re really grateful not only to our amazing volunteer actors and crew, but also to our wonderful audiences who buy the tickets that make profits possible.

An event of this scale is only possible with a community that helps each other out. Huge thanks go to the local businesses that stepped up with sponsorship: Baffies Oan Books, McGrath Real Estate, Capers Early Learning Samford, HMG Home Loans, Platinum Joinery Interiors, Makers on Main, She’s My OT and Golden Fox Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Invaluable institutional support was also provided by the CWA, Samford Scouts and Samford Progress. And a thank you to everyone for the generosity at the book swap tables which helped us raise $100 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Community feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with parents sharing that their kids simply didn’t want to go home. Locals loved the relaxed atmosphere as a wonderful way to catch up with friends, with many already asking if the festival could become a monthly event.

A DELIGHTFUL DAY OUT Pages in the Park on Saturday 22 August was a gentle, delightful tribute to children’s literature, a very fitting start to Children’s Book Week, that folk of all ages enjoyed.

Book Queen Janette (pictured) from Baffies Oan Books took the germ of an idea from a bookie conversation and grew it into a miraculous gathering of amazing local authors, book lovers, dedicated promoters of children’s literature and literacy and happy children, in a wonderfully creative safe space in the centre of our community.

Apart from the lovely bookie buzz, the big take away was the community spirit. When there was a problem, somebody stepped up to solve it.

Samford Progress magicked a gazebo in to protect the paper craft from the drizzle; parents and children popped up to help everywhere from setting up to packing up; authors gave their time, reading, answering questions and finding just the right book for a story-thirsty child; and other stall holders and volunteers (especially the children from Samford State School and some wonderful older boys) went out of their way to make the day special.

Hopefully this can become a yearly event.

AROUND THE VILLAGE INCLUSION, DETERMINATION AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT They made history once before, now they’re back to do it again. Claire’s Cottage participants from Ferny Hills are returning to the Great Brisbane Tram Pull as the event’s first all-abilities team, and this time they’re coming back with one goal: to crush the competition. A few years ago, our team proved that people with disability belong in the middle of the action, not watching from the sidelines.

Now our participants are ready to get behind the rope again and show the community what they can do. And they’re bringing the yellow army with them. We’re calling on family, friends and the local community to come along, wear yellow and get behind the team as they take on the challenge.

What started in 2023, when Claire’s Cottage entered the first all-abilities team into the Great Brisbane Tram Pull has now become an annual tradition for participants from the Ferny Hills-based NDIS-registered disability organisation. Three years later, they are back and ready to pull again.

The Great Brisbane Tram Pull is a unique community event where teams work together to pull a one tonne historic tram along the track at the Brisbane Tramway Museum in Ferny Grove. It takes teamwork, determination and plenty of muscle, and our participants absolutely love it.

The Claire’s Cottage team includes people with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disability, cerebral palsy and

vision impairment, with some participants being legally blind. What they have in common is a love of getting involved, having a go and being part of their local community.

Since entering the event in 2023, the Tram Pull has become something our participants genuinely look forward to each year. They are proud to have been the first all abilities team and are keen to come back, compete, improve and see what they can achieve.

This year, the team is hoping to have a big crowd behind them and is calling on family, friends, support workers and the wider community to come along and wear yellow.

For Claire’s Cottage, the Tram Pull is about much more than pulling a tram. It is about giving people with disability the opportunity to get involved, have a go, work as a team and be part of something happening in their own community.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Museum MEMORIES OF SAMFORD An extract from Graham Neuse’s story, published in Samford Reminiscences Unpublished.

I was born deaf in1942 which was a big blow to Mum and Dad. Our family moved from Brisbane to North Queensland soon after. At the time food and clothing ration coupons were still being issued and WW2 was on our doorstep.

As a youngster, I was with Dad one day when he was building a house when one of the men saw me tap Dad and indicate what I wanted. Dad was embarrassed, but the man told him that the Brisbane Deaf and Dumb School would be able to help me to communicate. Dad told Mum and Mum rang my grandmother in Brisbane, asking her to go and check the school. She did and said yes, it would be good for me, so we moved to Gaythorne. I started school a year early in 1948, travelling by tram from Enoggera.

Here I began learning to communicate using a few basic signs and finger spelling the

alphabet.

Mum and I would catch train from to Central Rail next to Anzac Square and hop on the Queen Street tram to Dutton Park Deaf School and then go home via the same route. Poor Mum travelled with me for two years before she knew I was okay by myself.

She was worn out from travelling this route four times a day.

Highvale Dad became tired of building and wanted a farm as he had grown small crops and had poultry before going to and while in Northern Queensland. I was 10 years old when, with my parents Jack and Ruth and my two older sisters, Dorothy and Barbara, moved to a farm (Portion 126 parish Samford) on Dawson Creek, Highvale in 1952. Dad bought the farm from Mr Knowles.

Leaving home about 7am, I travelled by Bill Porter’s bus from Highvale to Little Roma Street, then I walked to Queen Street where I caught a tram to the Deaf School at Dutton Park. In the afternoon it was in reverse returning home about 6pm. I was always late for school.

I completed schooling in 1957, one year early at 14 years 11 months old, rather than in 1958 when grade 10 was the final year.

My principal wanted me to attend Gatton Agricultural College as the first deaf student, to build on my education. This was during the time of a bad five-year drought and money was very tight. Dad wrote to the Board of Education to have permission to allow me to work on his farm. The school board gave Dad permission to allow me to help my dad and not have to continue my education, much to the disappointment of my mother and the principal.

On Sundays I had only light farm work to do for Dad, like bringing in the cows on my horse with my blue cattle dog. I spent a lot of time with neighbours, the Baker boys, swimming, riding horses and playing tennis.

After I left school Dad taught me to drive the tractor. Dad and I worked together on all the farm jobs for example, building new bails and barn, using a knapsack to spray the cows for ticks, building an above ground silo and filling it with fodder crops of corn/maize, sorghum and oats. Handfeeding crops into the steam engine-driven chaffcutter to chaff the crops for filling the silo and feeding to the cows was hazardous and hard work.

When we got electricity, Dad bought a small black and white tv. It opened the world news for my small deaf world.

When Dad was a Trustee of the Highlands Recreation Reserve he, my brother-in-law and I pulled down the old high wire fence around the tennis court and other farmers cleaned out weeds, put in new crushed granite, new high posts and fence. The cricket pitch was also reopened. I didn’t play cricket however I knew a deaf boy who did play.

Dad sold the farm at the time the milk tankers began collecting the milk. He was getting tired and the expense to change was too great.

I learnt a lot from Dad (and Mum was very strict making me learn English reading) during those years we worked together on the farm.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Museum A LIVING LANDSCAPE OF HISTORY Samford Valley offers the kind of landscape that encourages people to slow down. Its quiet roads, forested hills, walking trails and open spaces are well known to locals, but the area’s appeal runs deeper than its natural beauty. Around Samford Conservation Park, the land holds stories stretching back thousands of years.

The district is believed to have been known as Kupidabin, an Aboriginal Waka word meaning “place of possums”.

Samford Valley’s first inhabitants are thought to have been connected with Waka and Kabi Aboriginal clans, whose lives were shaped by the district’s creeks, forests and ranges.

One of the valley’s most significant cultural places is the Samford bora ring, regarded as the best-preserved example in South-East Queensland. Early settlers also recorded bora rings across nearby districts including Samsonvale, Dayboro, Mount Pleasant, Laceys Creek, Petrie, Keperra

and Kippa-Ring. The Samford bora ring was last recorded as being used in 1874, and traditional ceremonial life in the region is generally accepted to have ended by about 1880.

European settlement brought rapid change. After the Moreton Bay convict settlement closed in 1842, free settlers moved into the area. Pastoralists took up the Samford Run in the 1850s, and by 1873, 317 acres between Bunyaville and D’Aguilar National Park had been reserved for timber. Gold mining was also attempted, although little gold was found.

In the early to mid1900s, a railway line ran through the park from Camp Mountain to Ferny Grove, carrying travellers through the district. That history turned tragic in 1947, when a train derailed while descending Camp Mountain, killing 16 people and injuring 38. The line closed soon after, but the event remains part of local memory.

Today, Samford Conservation Park forms part of a rich natural corridor close to

D’Aguilar National Park. Cool mountain tops, forest flats and shaded streams support ferns, mosses, giant barred frogs and spiny crayfish. At night, yellow-bellied gliders and short-eared possums move through the tall open forest, while owls, including the vulnerable powerful owl, hunt among the trees.

Birdwatchers may also hear or spot bowerbirds, wompoo fruit-doves, bell miners and yellowtailed black-cockatoos.

Now protected as a 624-hectare conservation park, Samford remains a place where natural beauty and local memory meet. For residents and visitors alike, its tracks and open spaces offer a chance to enjoy the bush while appreciating the deep history held in this remarkable valley.

AROUND THE VILLAGE MIND YOUR PETIQUETTE Australia is becoming more pet-friendly, with almost three in four households now owning at least one pet. But as dogs become more visible in cafés, airports, parks, apartment buildings, beaches and other shared public spaces, pet owners need to practice good petiquette by respecting venue rules, other people and other animals around them.

Pets are increasingly regarded as family members, with many owners bringing their furry companions along for everything from quick errands and social catchups to extended holidays.

Brad Smith, CEO of RSPCA Pet Insurance, says the rise of pet-friendly venues, travel options and public spaces is positive, but it comes with greater responsibility for pet owners. “Australians clearly see pets as part of the family, but that does not mean every social setting is suitable for every animal.

A dog that is calm at home may not cope well in a busy café, airport queue, crowded market or off-leash beach.”

Assistance animals Under Australian food safety guidance, assistance animals must be allowed in customer-accessed areas, while pet dogs may only be permitted in unenclosed outdoor dining areas. Food businesses can also decide whether to allow pet dogs and set their own conditions, including requiring dogs to stay on the ground or remain on a lead.

Rules also vary across parks, beaches and public spaces, where leash, off-leash and dog-prohibited areas are generally managed by state, territory or local council rules.

Television veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren says good petiquette is not only about following venue rules but also understanding that not every dog wants to

meet another dog.

“Dog-friendly does not mean every dog should be allowed to approach every other dog,” says Dr Warren. “Dogs of different breeds, sizes, temperaments and energy levels may not always interact well, so owners need to give other dogs space and ask before allowing a greeting.”

Dr Warren says owners should never assume a dog that is relaxed at home will behave the same way around food, children, crowds or unfamiliar animals.

Signs a dog may be uncomfortable include a stiff body, tucked tail, ears pinned back, lip licking, yawning, turning away, hiding behind their owner, raised hackles, growling, barking, lunging or freezing in place.

“These signs are a dog’s way of communicating that they are unsure, stressed or need more space,” says Dr Warren. “The safest response is not to force the interaction. Move calmly away, give the dog room and allow both animals to settle.”

AROUND THE VILLAGE DAYBORO TIME CAPSULE The Dayboro Time Capsule was opened on 26 July at Dayboro Lion’s Park 25 years after it was buried in 2001. Around 170 community members gathered for the event. The contents revealed photographs, family letters, messages to the future and keepsakes reflecting life in the village at the time.

The Queensland Dair yfar mers Organisation’s envelope was one of the documents recovered from the capsule and according to Jenny Easlea revealed a lot of interesting information.

The envelope contained information about the activities of the 27 dairy farmer members of the Dayboro and Samford branch of the organisation at the time the capsule was buried.

Members were spread from Upper Kedron to Ocean View, and Mt Mee still had an active branch.

Joe Bradley was the chairman and Jenny Easlea the secretary.

Meetings were held regularly followed by information sessions: farmers learnt about things like how to lodge your first

BAS statement, ticks and drought assistance.

The district was in drought, having only had 40ml of rain in the last 3 months from April to the end of June 2001.

An annual Christmas party was held with meat and drinks provided by sponsorship, as well as entertainment, Santa and Christmas presents for the children.

Pasture, Functional Dairy Herd and Milk Quality Competitions were held in conjunction with the Dayboro Show. Results

of the pasture were Weston’s in first place, Easlea coming second and Nugent third.

While Functional Dairy Cows had Leis first, Rowley second and Bond third. Other names in the competition were Rowe, Reilly, Sellin, Court, Ward, Rowley and Vrutocky.

The branch nominated Bill Rowe as Dayboro Resident of the Year 2001, and this was successful.

Bill had been a QDO member for over 50 years as well the secretary Dayboro Producers’ Association since 1975. Pat Rowley another branch member and local farmer was president of the Australian Dairyfarmers Federation of Australia and President of the QDO. Pat had been Chairman of the dairy group of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers from 1992 t0 1998.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SAMFORD NETBALL FINALS-BOUND AFTER STANDOUT SEASON Samford Netball Club is heading into finals on the back of one of its strongest seasons in years, with eight of its thirteen competitive teams progressing through to the first week of finals in the Downey Park Netball Association (DPNA) competition.

Of those eight finalist teams, six finished the regular season as Minor Premiers, while the remaining two secured spots in the top two of their respective divisions. For a community club run entirely by volunteers, it’s a result the club says reflects the depth and effort across every single team this season.

team this year has made this one of the best seasons our club has had in years,” a club spokesperson said. “That’s a wholeclub achievement, and every player, coach, manager and supporter is part of it.”

Alongside the on-court results, the club is also celebrating three of its developing umpires, who were awarded their DPNA Junior Umpire Badges this season (pictured).

The badges are presented through the association’s Junior Umpire Award, which recognises and encourages talented umpires as they progress through DPNA’s umpire development pathway.

With the 7/8/9s age teams still to complete their seasons over the coming weeks, and finals now underway for the club’s other teams, there’s plenty of netball still to be played.

The club is also gearing up for its next round of Little Netta, kicking off to coincide with Term 4. Little Netta is a great entry point for young players wanting to give netball a go, and families interested in getting involved can find more details at samfordnetball.org.au.

QCWA Samford NETWORKING Ekka time for the QCWA Samford branch is always an exciting time to network with other CWA ladies and meet the visitors who come into the CWA cafe. The Ekka Cookery Competition at the Royal Queensland Show is a highlight for many. Samford CWA member Anne won first prize for her chocolate cake, second place for her cumquat marmalade, highly commended for her Anzac biscuits and commended for her Rosella jam. Congratulations Anne.

The QCWA Eats & Treats Stall has been staffed by CWA members since 1925, with visitors always looking for the famous fresh scones, jam and cream. Samford branch members join in volunteering at the cafe every year.

QCWA Greater Brisbane Division Cookery Competition Day was held on Saturday 22 August at QCWA Redcliffe Hall.

Congratulations to our CWA members for your winning entries and to everyone who entered. Many thanks to the organisers, helpers and the judge.

Other competitions held on the day revolved around art and craft; for example, a pained tea towel, yarn crafts and scrapbooking among others. Entries were all creative, clever and inspiring. First prize winners will go onto the State Competition Finals being held at the Queensland Country Women’s Association State Conference on 26 to 28 October at the Maroochydore RSL. Update to our CWA Samford Hall The old and deteriorated lattice at the back of the CWA Hall Samford has been replaced by aluminium screening, which is secure, modern and clean. This was made possible by a grant. Thank you to Gail for pursuing the grant funding.

One of the most exciting parts of Makers on Main is discovering just how much creative talent exists right here in our local community.

Every time a new artist or maker walks through our doors, I get to hear another story about creativity, inspiration and the joy of making something by hand.

Our Featured Artist is Barb Rushe (pictured), a professional artist and founder of BRushe Creative Studio in the beautiful Samford Valley.

Barb’s expressive watercolours are inspired by nature and everyday beauty.

Rather than aiming for perfect realism, she captures the feeling and essence of her subjects through flowing washes, layered transparency and beautiful texture.

Barb is certainly not the only exciting local creative we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming into Makers on Main. Julie Little has recently joined us with her beautiful ceramic earrings, along with her oil paintings. Ashley Lauren from Fern Gully Farm in Cedar Creek creates the most whimsical and wonderfully interactive ceramics. And from nearby Dayboro, Ann Gillespie brings her beautiful ceramic work and another wonderful perspective on the

Yesteryear Caro Claire Byrk Yesteryear is a cutting inventive satire about an Instagram influencer spruiking the joys of living the clean pure sustainable ways of her pioneering forebears while cosplaying a Christian trad wife in the backwoods of Idaho, complete with a cowboy husband and six apparently charming children.

To get obscenely wealthy, she attracts 8 million followers who believe everything she says she does, they have no idea there are farm workers, production assistants, nannies and modern kitchen equipment everywhere behind the scenes. “Angry Women” try to slay her online persona but she out-fronts them.

“I wanted all the aesthetics of the olden times and all the amenities of modernity,” Natalie says. Her voice is razor sharp and often hilarious.

Twist Happy perfection it seems until a timeline twist lands her in midst of the pioneer reality of 1855. The premise is made more brilliant by making Natalie the intelligent, brutally ambitious, mean-spirited, cruel, narcissistic, and abhorrently addictive antiprotagonist. She describes herself as, “the manic pixie American dream girl of this nation’s deepest, darkest fantasies”. At times Natalie’s thoughts are twisted and disturbing and her children suffer.

Roll on sweet schadenfreude.

In the brutal reality of 1855, after her social media downfall, she tries to determine if her new life is a nightmare, time travel or something else. Whatever her new reality is, she’ll do anything to escape.

The story is split into two narratives: the first documents her life up until her fall from grace; the second reveals what happens when Natalie wakes up to the 1855 pioneer reality that isn’t hers. It was hard to predict where the story will go. Both narratives are extremely compelling to read.

Yesteryear is about the tradwife lifestyle, toxic social media, lies, politics, hypocrisy and narcissism. It doesn’t shy away from marital issues, motherhood, expectations on women, pronatalism and obeying one’s husband. Take a risk. Read it.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES STRONG LEGS SHORT SESSIONS If you’ve tackled the trails out through D’Aguilar National Park or pushed on toward Mount Glorious lately, you’ll know the ascent isn’t the hard part. It’s the long downhill stretch afterwards, when your knees start complaining and your quads feel like they’ve given up on you three kilometres from the car.

The team at Samford Valley Physiotherapy sees this constantly. Walking downhill puts far more strain through the knees than most people expect, because your quads aren’t just holding you up, they’re working hard to control every step down, lengthening under load the whole way. That kind of work is exactly what tends to leave people sore the next day and prone to niggles like knee pain or tight calves if their legs haven’t been prepared for it.

The good news? You don’t need to overhaul your week or carve out hour-long gym sessions to get trail ready. A handful of short, simple sessions scattered through the week does the job just as well, arguably better, because they’re sustainable.

Think ten minutes here and there: a set of

step-downs off your back deck before you put the kettle on, a few slow squats while dinner’s cooking, some single-leg calf raises brushing your teeth.

These little bursts, done consistently two or three times a week, build the exact strength your legs need for the downhills, without needing a gym membership or a

spare hour you don’t have.

A simple starting point • Step-downs off a low step, controls the lowering motion your knees rely on downhill.

• Bodyweight squats, builds the quad and glute strength for climbing.

• Single-leg calf raises, protects your Achilles and ankles on uneven ground.

• Sideways band walks or shuffles, keeps hips stable on rocky, rootcovered trails.

Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a week, is genuinely enough to notice a difference within a month, and it’s far easier to stick to than promising yourself a big weekly gym block you’ll inevitably skip.

If your knees are already niggling on the downhills, it’s worth getting it looked at sooner rather than later, small problems are much easier to sort out than the ones that have been building for months.

FESTIVALS, FAIRS AND DRESS UPS Baffies Oan Books love to celebrate Book Week and champion storytelling as well as creativity. We had quite a busy week, starting off with the new book festival in Samford, Pages in the Park, and then jumped onto a week-long book fair at Samford Valley Steiner School.

We also peppered group readings throughout the week at local childcare centres and attended the dress up parades at our local junior schools. What a joy to witness the children and their teachers showcase their love of reading and books in such imaginative ways.

Baffies Oan Books is a small indy bookstore based at Lifestyle Centre Samford Valley. We currently run three book clubs, but watch this space as we have something new coming soon.

My First Book Club for our littlest readers takes place every Monday morning at 9am after school drop off, under the mural of

a tree and friendly powerful owl in the children’s room.

Leeanne’s Brain Candy Book Club meets on every second Tuesday of the month at 1pm, while Sunday Book Club meets on the last Sunday of every month at 3pm.

Book clubs take place at the bookshop and we love adding new members. Drop in or enquire at the shop and we will pop you on the mailing list. Vibe is laid back and casual and very welcoming, you can say as much or as little as suits your personality and we serve tea and snacks.

Samford Farmers Hall Association Inc. is seeking a reliable, organised and community-minded Hall Manager to manage the day-to-day administration, bookings, financial coordination and operational support for Samford Farmers Hall.

About the role

The Hall Manager will act as a contractor with their own ABN and will be responsible for completing the tasks and duties associated with the management of Samford Farmers Hall.

The role is suited to someone with strong administration, communication, financial and coordination skills who can work independently while liaising effectively with the Samford Farmers Hall Committee.

Eyeglasses (or spectacles) are made up of a complex mix of different materials which take generations to break down so should not be placed in kerbside rubbish or recycling bins.

However, there are reuse and recycling options available so old glasses can have a second life.

If the glasses are in good condition, they can be reused by donating to: Dayboro Lions Club, who have collection boxes at Dayboro Pharmacy, Dayboro Medical Centre and Dayboro Valley Health.

Alternatively, spectacles or unused contact lenses can be sent to: Reply Paid 3021, Lions Recycle for Sight, PO Box 3021, CLONTARF MDC QLD 4019.

Please remove the glasses from any cases and pop them in a padded bag or bubble wrap. Do not send broken spectacles, nonprescription sunglasses or cases.

Many optometrists also accept glasses for refurbishing through Lions Recycle for Sight Australia.

Glasses in poor condition (broken or scratched) can be recycled through Opticycle. These glasses are recycled and made into new sustainable building materials, like pavers, bricks, blocks and eco-aggregates in Australia. Any excess metals are sent to a metal refinery for further separation.

Vaughn first came along with some friends to our Give Bowls A Go event back in September 2025. He enjoyed his first taste of bowls, came back for some more lessons and discovered something he liked.

Just a few weeks later, Vaughn joined our club as an associate member. By the start of 2026, he had stepped up to full competition membership and began entering club competitions. He is now the 2026 Novice and B Grade Champion.

Samford Bowls Club PENNANTS Both Division 4 and Division 6 of the pennant teams had an outstanding pennant season. Division 4 finished in second position on the ladder with Division 6 sitting at fourth position on the ladder. Hence both teams qualified for the semi-finals. Division 4 won their semi-final match by defeating St Lucia 62 to 46. They are now set to play Geebung in the final match on 29 August 2026. We hope that they are successful.

Unfortunately, Division 6 didn’t manage to win their semi-final match against Chermside. They went down 60 to 51.

However, they put in a great effort to reach the semi-finals. Well done to both Divisions for their courageous efforts throughout the 2026 season.

Club Competitions Congratulations to Jo, our 2026 Club Ladies Veteran Champion. She defeated Pam Campbell. Pam is always a formidable opponent and never gives up, putting up

a tough fight right through to the very last bowl leaving her hand. Well played both ladies.

Bribie Island Social Day Great company, a tasty lunch and good weather for bowls marked the annual Bribie Social Club visited recently. Thanks to Alex Gow Funerals for sponsoring the day and to the Bribie Islanders for visiting. Much appreciation is extended to the Samford district Bowls club volunteers that plan and run these days.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES MILESTONES AND CELEBRATIONS FOR SAMFORD PARKRUN The Samford Parklands parkrun community is heading into a big fortnight of milestones and celebrations. We’re about to reach our 100th event and our second birthday, and we’d love the Samford and wider community to join us.

First up, on Saturday 5 September, we will celebrate our 100th event with Pace Week.

It’s a great chance to chase a personal best (PB) with pacers from 20 minutes to 50 minutes.

If speed isn’t your thing, you are always welcome to join us for a relaxed run or walk.

The following Saturday, 12 September, we celebrate our second birthday with a crazy hat theme and a sweet treat at the finish line. It’s a chance to celebrate everything our community has built together.

In just under two years, Samford Parklands has grown into a welcoming community of movement and connection.

As of 4 September, we have had: • 4,647 different people cross the finish line • 355 different volunteers helping

keep the event running each week an average weekly attendance of 145 walkers and runners, and • an average of 17 volunteers each week These numbers show what makes Samford Parklands special, a free, communityled event where everyone belongs. It is proudly a parkwalk as much as a parkrun, welcoming all ages, abilities and paces.

Each Saturday at 7am, you’ll find friendly faces, wagging tails, encouragement and volunteers cheering people on.

We’ve also become a favourite stop for parkrun tourists. In recent months we’ve welcomed visitors from Ireland, the UK, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa and Japan, as well as greater Brisbane and across Australia.

Each visitor adds something to our growing story.

If you’ve thought about volunteering, now is a good time to give it a go. Whether you’re handing out tokens, scanning, marshalling, pacing or cheering, you’ll be part of the team. We provide training and support if it’s your first time.

The next two Saturdays are a celebration of community, movement and the fun we create together.

Rotary Club of Samford Valley EXERCISE AND THE AGEING BRAIN Dr Dan Blackmore made such a great impression when he spoke about this topic at a recent Rotary Conference that FOUR clubs in our district got together and organised for him to give a talk at Arana Leagues Club on 18 August.

A total of 75 members and their guests from Samford Valley Rotary Club, as well as Albany Creek, Caboolture and Mitchelton clubs, attended and enjoyed his fascinating talk about the positive effects of physical exercise on the ageing brain.

Dr Blackmore, from UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), with Emeritus Professor Perry Bartlett, led the longitudinal study in which volunteers (aged between 65 and 85 years of age) did physical exercise and had brain scans, over a six-month period.

Their research found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improved brain function in older adults for up to 5 years.

They discovered that exercise can, not only delay cognitive decline, but also improve cognitive function (learning and memory) with a bonus of improved balance We can only imagine what huge impacts this study could have on our understanding of aging related dementia and provide real strategies to mitigate its impacts.

The study was definitive in its conclusion that physical exercise can reduce the risk.

The presentation was thoroughly engaging and beautifully tailored to this audience. It offered a great reminder of how important it is to maintain an active lifestyle and close social ties, as we get older.

The Rotary clubs showed their gratitude by presenting Dr Blackmore with a cheque for $3800 (a combined donation from the four clubs) towards the work of the QBI. Dr Blackmore told us that further research is needed to assess the different types of exercise that could be included in aged care. He hopes that the research will inform exercise guidelines for older people.

MEMBERS DEVOTED TO THE COMMUNITY At the August Brendale Evening VIEW Club dinner meeting, members enjoyed an evening filled with fun, friendship, food, fundraising and inspiration. Guest speaker, Dave Hagger, an accredited exercise physiologist, encouraged everyone to get moving and explained how regular physical activity can help keep our brains active and our bodies strong.

The evening also provided an opportunity for four long-standing members to reflect on their many years of involvement with the club. Two members, Trish and Di, each celebrated 33 years of membership.

Celebrations Also joining the celebrations were Lyall, with 23 years of membership, and Fran, with 19 years. Between these four dedicated women, they have contributed an amazing 108 years of community involvement and sponsorship.

This month we announced the construction of new crisis and transitional accommodation for women and children leaving domestic violence via the Housing Australia Future Fund, including in our electorate in Dickson. Our local Pine Rivers, Samford and Dayboro shows were a great success, displaying the very best of our community. I was pleased to be a major sponsor of all 3 shows. MORETON BAY CALLS OUT UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR City of Moreton Bay has launched a new campaign that encourages respectful interactions across council services and community spaces.

One in seven council team members have reported experiencing occupational violence and aggression while at work. From answering calls to helping at libraries, to mowing parks and fixing roads, more than 2,000 dedicated City of Moreton Bay team members support the community every day. Council is now reminding residents to please treat those team members with respect.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said everyone deserves to feel safe and respected while doing their jobs.

“I want to encourage everyone to communicate with respect and empathy, recognising that there is a real person on the receiving end of every interaction with council. The way we speak and act to one another matters,” he said.
