BUILDING PEACE, ONE PERSON AT A TIME Rotary Club of Samford Valley When Lina, a German Exchange student sponsored by the Rotary Club of Samford Valley, came to visit and speak to members and guests recently, she brought along one of her favourite German snacks, pretzels. According to her Host Dad Graeme, Lina is “quite the baker”. She arrived with a big basket full of freshly baked pretzels to add to our Aussiethemed supper of mini meat pies, sausage rolls, lamingtons and Tim Tams. Needless to say, Lina’s basket went home empty. Another special treat for Lina was the surprise Bienenstich (Beesting in English) from The Samford Patisserie, who heard that Lina was visiting and sent along the German cake as a gift to Lina, in case she was missing some of her favourite treats from home. Lina was delighted. Lina’s host family Graeme and Lyn have kept her very busy, so she assured us that homesickness hasn’t really set in. She did, however, share that she was missing her pet rabbits, so the Samford Rotary Club decided to gift her a plush bilby, so she
has something soft and furry to cuddle. Lina is only here for 3 months, on a program called STEP (short stay exchange program), different from the LTEP (long term exchange program) which runs for 12 months. The goal of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program is to “build peace one person at a time”. The benefits to the students (aged 15 to 19 years), sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries are many,
for example students unlock their true potential to develop lifelong leadership skills, learn a new language and culture, build lasting friendships with young people from around the world and become global citizens. Lina spoke to the club about how much she was enjoying her time in Australia, despite the many differences. She also expressed how grateful she was for the experience and for the support she’s received from Rotary. If you’d like to know more about the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, you can connect online at youthexchange.rotary9620. org, connect on LinkedIn or email youthexchange@rotary.org. Our thanks to Brumby’s Samford for the delicious mini meat pies, to our friend of Rotary, Katie Wilson for her special sausage rolls and to Kylie and Anthony at The Samford Patisserie for the surprise Beesting cake for Lina. VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD
FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, Spring is well and truly upon us, with water carriers already being kept very busy and authorities conducting hazard reduction burns in preparation for what is expected to be a very dry summer. This month my congratulations go to the organisers and volunteers of the Samford Stags rugby league club’s Long Lunch fundraising annual event held recently. Samford Progress updates Cr Ellie Smith Ellie provided an update to members on several matters, including: the use of KPIs in the Council’s corporate reporting processes; the proposed Nexus development application (DA) at the Closeburn Country Garden Centre site; the importance of the Council’s Township Character for the Village; Council’s rate increases and caps; and a meeting held with Greggs Road residents. Nexus Church Ltd and Nexus Care Inc development (DA/2024/3769) The timeline for Council’s decision has now lapsed, resulting in the DA being referred to

the Qld Planning and Environment Court. Some local residents have serious concerns (especially traffic safety and noise impacts) and are considering their position and next steps. The DA’s details can be found on the Council’s DA Tracker. Samford Community Hub (SCHUB) The facility is getting some new equipment. A batch of new replacement chairs for the hall has been purchased; a quality second-hand photocopier has been donated; and options for a new portable PA speaker are being considered. Importantly, our long-awaited signed Agreement is now in place with the Department of Defence for their long-term hire of space for the Cadets to use. Traffic Many drivers are still exceeding the new 40kph speed limit in Main St. If this situation doesn’t improve, one option is to request some highly-visible illuminated speed limit signs. Meeting with Council Cr Ellie Smith facilitated a constructive meeting between Samford Progress reps and the City of Moreton Bay Council’s CEO to highlight our experiences and concerns with the recent Main and Junction Streets DA assessment process and how learnings could be used. Volunteer Awards Samford Progress will host its Volunteer Awards at this year’s Christmas in the Village event. Residents, community groups, businesses and schools will be invited to provide nominations. If any of these topics interest you, please feel free to reach out to us or better still come along to our monthly meetings. Did you know? A quick and easy way of reporting issues with council assets in our area such as potholes, graffiti, fallen trees etc is via the easily downloadable Snap Send Solve app (https://snapsendsolve.com). Simply use this free app to snap an image and confirm the location and the issue is automatically sent directly to City of Moreton Bay Council. Gentle reminder The Samford Progress AGM is being held on Wed evening 21 October 2026 at the SCHUB. If you are interested, you are welcome to come along. However, only members can vote on the candidates for the Management Committee positions. Until next month! David Harrison

LOCAL NEWS SPRING HOEDOWN A WINNER Samford RDA’s Spring Hoedown in September raised more than $10,000 to support the Riding for the Disabled program at Samford Showgrounds. The old-style bush dance was attended by some 200 guests who enjoyed an evening of hospitality, food and dancing under cover in Samford RDA’s Jenny O’Malley Arena. Organisers thank major sponsors, the City of Moreton Bay and IGA Drakes Samford; plus a host of supporters including Golden Valley Keperra Lions, Rode Meats, Samford Patisserie and Simon George & Sons. This Sunday, 4 October will see another fundraiser benefit Samford RDA, with the Riley Motor Club of Queensland hosting its second Classic Car Show at the showgrounds from 9am. This event will be open to all classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. The cash entry fee for both display and visitor vehicles is just $5. President of Samford RDA, Michael Costello, said support for the charity from the local community was
amazing and thanked the Riley Motor Club for selecting Samford RDA as this year’s car show beneficiary. “We do not receive government funding, so we are very grateful for the support from businesses and local residents and community groups,” he said. “Funds raised from special events such
BUSHCARE During our Council-assisted af ter noon bushcare session on Sunday 13 September, our volunteers split into 2 teams. With site conditions now very dry, one team watered the new understorey and infill plants in rainforest revegetation zones P1 and P1 using watering cans filled at the tennis centre. Most plants were given about half a can of water, but our 20 precious Richmond Birdwing Vines planted during the People for Nature Biodiversity Workshop received a full can (up to 9 litres). A second team weeded the lower section of riverbank planting P4, bagging any weeds that were running to seed, and removed numerous young Climbing Asparagus plants from rainforest zone P2. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed socialising over another delicious afternoon tea kindly provided Samford Progress. We thank all attendees for a job well done. Our next Councilassisted bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 11 September from 2 to 4pm. when we will probably need to water plants again as well as carrying out essential weeding. Bird survey On 15 September, our birders recorded

68 species and counted 254 birds in about 3 hours following the usual route. We were mesmerised as we watched an Azure Kingfisher fly back and forth across the waterhole, from a prominent perch on one side to a more concealed location within foliage on the other. Other notable highlights were watching a Brown Goshawk harassing a White-bellied Sea-Eagle in the sky to the east and getting very close to a covey of 6 Brown Quail foraging quietly on seeding grasses by the road to the SCHUB. The only winter visitor still hanging around was a Spotted Pardalote near the waterhole and the only early summer migrant was Sacred Kingfisher heard beyond the waterhole. We added a new record for the site, which was a Eurasian Coot seen in the South Pine River below the Bowls Club. This brings the cumulative

and pitch their proposed solutions. The winning startup, Koei Dreamworks, has developed a self-propelled inspection robot in response to the challenge theme of “infrastructure maintenance management”. The innovative robot is called Haikan-Kun which translates as Pipeworks Buddy and can navigate inside pipes using internal pipe imagery, pipe routing location data and distance data. The unique advantage of the robots are
their ability to navigate smaller diameter pipes to address potential issues like blockages, cracking and general aging. City of Moreton Bay is home to over 90km of stormwater pipes measuring less than 150mm diameter and in various states of condition making timely inspection of these sometimes challenging. The self-propelled inspection robots will soon be trialled and tested across Council’s stormwater network as well as throughout Unitywater’s wastewater network.
LOCAL NEWS Samford Museum BE PART OF SAMFORD’S STORY Samford Museum is looking for friendly volunteers who enjoy people, stories and community spirit Every local area has stories worth keeping, and Samford is lucky to have many of them gathered in one very welcoming place. At Samford Museum, old photographs, farm tools, household treasures, school memories, family histories and everyday objects all help tell the story of how the district grew from earlier farming days into the lively village community we know today. Now the museum is inviting new volunteers to come along and be part of that story. You do not need to be a history expert and there is no test to pass before you join in. A curious mind, a friendly nature and a willingness to lend a hand are the most useful qualifications. If you like meeting people, learning new things or helping your community in a practical way, there is likely to be a role that suits you. Volunteers help
in all sorts of ways. Some enjoy welcoming visitors, answering questions and sharing a yarn about local life. Others prefer quieter behind-the-scenes jobs such as researching names and places, cataloguing items, caring for displays, helping with school visits, gardening, maintenance or pitching in at special events. There is room for people with practical skills, people who enjoy organising things and people who simply like being part of a friendly team. One of the nicest things about
volunteering at the museum is the chance to feel more connected to the place we call home. You might discover a surprising detail about an old village business, learn how local families lived and worked or hear a visitor share a memory that adds another piece to Samford’s bigger picture. These small stories matter because they help children, newcomers, longtime residents and visitors understand the character of the district. There is flexibility too. You might have a regular morning free each week, an occasional day available or time to help with a particular project. New volunteers are supported as they settle in, so there is no need to feel daunted. If you have been thinking about doing something useful, social and meaningful close to home, Samford Museum would be delighted to hear from you. The Museum is open Sundays and Wednesdays from 9am to 3pm. For more information see www. samfordmuseum.org.au/website, telephone 3289 2743 or email info@samfordmuseum. org.au.

TAKE CARE, KOALAS ARE ON THE MOVE You may have noticed an increase in Koala activity recently. The little fellow in the picture was rescued off Samford Road at the entrance to the village by good Samaritans Cameron and Janice last month. They contacted Pine Rivers Koala Care Association and when representative Sharni arrived, he was hanging off the speed sign alongside the busy road. They managed to gently encourage him to move away from

the road and higher into a large tree. Sharni observed the Koala from a distance, took photographs and undertook a health check, which established that he was a healthy, young male. He had no tag and the siting was logged. She said that this kind of event was not unusual for this time of year. “From the end of July and probably till October, we are run off our feet with calls about koalas on the side of roads. The majority of the koalas we check are young males,” says Lynn Doccar, of the Pine Rivers Koala Care Association. The reason for this is mating season. The young back-riders are dispersed by their mum, meaning the teenager is kicked out. A young male is then in the predicament of being on his own, needing to find his own territory and vulnerable to the older males who will fight to keep their territory and the females within his area. Consequently, the younger male is chased and wanders around trying to find somewhere of his own, she explained. Land clearing With a lot of land clearing creating disjointed habitat, they end up in the back yard of homes where dogs may be present, crossing roads more and searching for the feed trees they need to mark their own territory. Some may decide to take on an older male and they will fight. Meanwhile, the females will either hunt out a male if she’s ready to mate or, if carrying a joey in her pouch or a younger back-rider, try to hide from the males and look for a place they haven’t left their scent. The male rubs the scent gland on his chest on the tree trunks. This warns off other males and for the females warns her or attracts her depending on what she wants. Signage for koalas is not to be ignored. They are placed by volunteer groups, TMR or council because they are a likely blackspot or known corridor. If habitat is fragmented, they have no option but to cross roads. Please take extra care: Slow down near koala warning signs and known habitat and be especially vigilant at dawn, dusk and during the night. Watch the road edges and verges for movement. Remember that a koala may be nearby even if you have never seen one in the area. Please report koala sightings to 0401 350 799, even if the koala appears healthy. AROUND THE VILLAGE COMPARE THE PAIR Varied and White-winged Triller Trillers are small members of the Cuckooshrike family (Campephagidae). The resident Varied Triller, found in eastern and northern Australia, prefers dense habitats such as rainforest, mangroves and riparian zones (along creeks and rivers). In our area, it can be found commonly at Mts Glorious and Nebo and along the South Pine River and its tributaries throughout the valley and in gardens with dense vegetation. It forages among foliage for fruit, seeds, nectar and insects and rarely comes to the ground. One of its colloquial names is Pied Caterpillar-eater, suggesting that insect larvae make up a good portion of the diet, but it is also particularly fond of figs where it may mix with other frugivorous birds such as figbirds and fruit-doves The male has black upperparts with a white supercilium (eyebrow), two parallel white wing bars, white underparts with very faint scalloping and rufous undertailcoverts. The female is similar, but has dark grey upperparts and greyish white underparts with noticeable grey barring and the undertail-coverts are paler. The song is a distinctive churring trill ‘drr-eea drr-eea drr-eea’. Breeding is little known, but the nest is a tiny cup of small twigs, bark and grass built in the fork of a tree and is just big enough to hold one egg. Both parents feed the single nestling and keep the next very clean, removing any faecal sacs. Varied Triller (male) In spring, it is worth keeping an eye out for the related, but much less common, Whitewinged Triller as it migrates south from its northern wintering areas, with a few pairs breeding in South-East Queensland (e.g. at Samford Lagoon). This species is found throughout Australia and favours more open habitats, such as sparse woodland with a grassy understorey. The main food
Pictured clockwise from top: Varied Triller (male), White-winger Triller (male) and Whitewinged Triller (fledgling begging to female)
is arthropods, including caterpillars (the colloquial common name of White-winged Caterpillar-eater is much more apt for this species), spiders, beetles, grasshoppers, flies and moths, but also seeds, fruit and occasionally nectar. Unlike the Varied Triller, it often forages on or near the ground, but also among the foliage and flowers of trees and shrubs by gleaning and sallying. Its arrival to our area seems to coincide with the flowering of Silky Oaks in which it is often seen. The plumage is superficially similar to the Varied Triller, but this is a smaller and slimmer species. The male has black upperparts (with no white eyebrow), grey rump, a large white shoulder patch (not bars) on the wings and clean white underparts including the undertail. The female has mainly brown upperparts, darker brown flight feathers with paler
edges, white underparts and a very thin white eyebrow. Males are strongly territorial when breeding, advertising their patch by conspicuous loud singing from high perches and taking song-flights. The song is a long rich trill ‘ditch-ditch-ditch … joey-joeyjoey…’. The nest is usually a small shallow cup built in a horizontal fork of branch of tree towards the end of a limb. The nest may be made of bark, grass, moss, wool or horsehair, bound together and fastened to the branch with substantial amounts of spider webs. The female lays 1 to 3 eggs that are incubated by both sexes for 14 days, with the male taking a greater share during day and the female incubating at night. Both parents feed the nestlings and remove the faecal sacs. The fledglings beg silently with fluttering wings, which is quite disconcerting because you expect to hear calls. Keep your eye out in the Samford district this spring for both species and let the Village Pump know if you see a Whitewinged Triller.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SPORTS FOOTWEAR RECYCLING Preloved sports footwear which is still in good condition can often be passed on to a family member or friend or donated to a local op shop for re-use. However, if your old sports shoes are past their use by date, please consider recycling them responsibly through TreadLightly rather than throwing them into your general waste bin. TreadLightly is an initiative operated by the Australian Sporting Goods Association with support from the federal government which aims to increase the responsible recycling of unwanted sports and active lifestyle shoes. This is important as Australia currently imports about 28 million sports shoes each year and when they end up in landfill the shoe components can take up to 1000 years to decompose. Sports shoes are collected by participating retailers and sent to a recycling plant in Australia for sorting, breakdown and processing. Reusable components, including rubber, leather and fibres, are turned into recycled crumb by Save our Soles. This recycled crumb is blended with material
from recycled tyres to manufacture new flooring for commercial and domestic applications. The following sports footwear is accepted for collection: athletic lifestyle shoes, sports branded shoes, thongs and slides, football boots, leather sports shoes, hiking boots, sneakers, runners, golf shoes and sports style school shoes. (Shoe laces should be tied together before donating to keep pairs matched). Please note that there is a limit of five pairs of shoes per person, per visit for footwear recycling. Please also note that the following items are not collected as part of this scheme: business footwear, wedges, pumps, leather
dress boots and ballet flats, heels, work boots or gumboots. AROUND THE VILLAGE
A MARVELLOUS END TO TERM What an amazing final week of term we had at Samford Playgroup. Our little friends laughed, danced, explored and celebrated together as we wrapped up another wonderful term. Our messy play was inspired by our beautiful local community. With Samford surrounded by farms and fresh produce, we created our very own vegetable patch sensory experience. Different shapes of painted pasta became colourful vegetables, while brown rice made the perfect “soil”. Our friends loved scooping, pouring, digging and filling containers, enjoying plenty of hands-on sensory fun along the way. Splashed With the warmer weather arriving, water play is back. Our friends splashed, poured and experimented in the sandpit, making mud pies and creating their own little rivers and waterways. Combining sand and water provides wonderful opportunities for openended learning. We finished the term with a very special Friday afternoon celebration, welcoming back our friend Dan from Dansland Music for an afternoon filled with music, movement and laughter. The children danced, sang along to familiar favourites and even explored a
little musical theory. Dan introduced the children to tempo, demonstrating how music can become faster or slower and encouraging everyone to sing well-known songs at different speeds. There were plenty of giggles when Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star suddenly became Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Car! Music experiences like these are a wonderful way for young children to develop listening skills, rhythm, coordination, language and confidence while simply having fun together. Our beautiful afternoon was made complete thanks to Tom Norris from LOYLE Real Estate, who was behind the BBQ making sure everyone was fed and happy. Thank you Tom for generously sponsoring our BBQ and helping us create such a wonderful afternoon for our families. Support from local businesses helps us continue providing special experiences for our families while strengthening the wonderful sense of community that makes Samford Village so special. Samford Playgroup is now closed for the school holidays while exciting renovations take place. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in Term 4. embers, though they were a far cry from today’s protective gear. One especially memorable fire was at Whites’ Mountain in 1951, in upper Camp Mountain. Mr Ray Mitchell suffered burns after his clothing caught in barbed wire while he was helping fight the blaze. By then, telephones were making a real difference giving residents earlier warning and a better chance to prepare. That fire also marked the last outing for Mr Domrow Senior’s old truck, which had been used in local firefighting efforts before being deregistered. These stories remind us that bushfire awareness has always been part of life in the district. The equipment, roads and warning systems have changed, but the basic message has not: take every fire seriously, stay alert in hot weather and look out for one another. After all, as the saying goes, from small things, big things grow. The Museum is open Sundays and Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm. Adults $6 and children $2. Groups welcome. 21 Station Street, Samford Village. Tel: 3289 2743. Website: www.samfordmuseum.org.au/ website and email: info@samfordmuseum. org.au
BUSHFIRE MEMORIES FROM SAMFORD DISTRICT Summer seems to be turning up earlier every year. One minute we are enjoying those lovely warm spring days, and the next we are checking the sky, watching the wind and hoping the bushfire season stays kind. For many local families, bushfires are not just headlines on the evening news, they are part of lived memory. John Domrow once shared the story of a frightening fire in 1928, when his family home came dangerously close to being lost. As the flames approached, Mrs Domrow made the practical decision to open the pens and let the pigs, poultry and calves make their own way to safer ground. The fire was thought to have started from burning timber left unattended during land clearing near Mt Nebo Road. The house survived, but the family lost a large part of their banana plantation. A few years later, in the early 1930s,
another fire broke out near the top of Camp Mountain. Local farmers, helped by two police officers from Mitchelton, worked quickly to slow it down. Their answer was to burn a controlled line along the lower ridge, creating a break before the main fire could push further through. By the 1940s, bulldozers were being used to cut firebreaks, but firefighting was still hard, hot and smoky work. Those on the fireground carried axes, hoes and 44-gallon drums, doing what they could with the tools available. Handkerchiefs or cloth masks helped against smoke, dust and flying

The decisions made at global COPs (Conference of Parties) will shape the future of life on Earth, but too often they remain distant from the people most affected by them. COP is the annual conference of nearly 200 member countries to assess the world’s progress on the climate crisis, find solutions and hold states accountable for their commitments to climate action. Citizen COP Australia is community initiative organised by People for Nature which runs alongside COP17 on Biological Diversity (19 to 30 October) and COP31 on Climate (9 to 20 November). Citizen COP Australia brings climate, biodiversity and circular economy discussions into everyday settings, turning global negotiations into accessible, shared civic conversations. Not one conference but hundreds of local, citizen-led events. Samford will host one of these free citizen-led events on 15 November from 4 to 8pm at the Samford Community Hub, Samford Parklands. It will include a Climate Fresk workshop which will use the power of collective intelligence to solve the climate puzzle. This step-by-step creation of the Fresk provides keys to understanding the big picture of climate change and its complexity. Aimed at anyone interested in the issue, whether beginner or veteran, you will come away feeling re-energised and empowered. After building the Fresk, you will engage in a productive discussion on solutions and actions. The event is free but please bring a plate of finger food to share for dinner. QCWA Samford STRAWBERRIES GALORE CWA Samford members visited Rolin Pick Your Own Strawberry Farm on 10 September. The morning was a little overcast and quite windy, but the ladies had lots of fun and exercise picking the brightest red and largest strawberries that they could find. The strawberries were to be eaten and also made into sweet and delicious strawberry jam. Everyone enjoyed a coffee and friendship afterwards, with some tasting of the strawberries and a few homemade sweet treats. The activity was organised by our Activities Officer Gail and was a chance to connect with the CWA members and enjoy the outdoors. Thank you, Gail. The Special Guest Speaker at our last meeting on 16 September was Teresa Reed, the CEO of The Forgotten Women and Mangrove Community Homes. In 2018, Mangrove Housing established The Forgotten Women project, a flagship, grassroots initiative aimed at providing safe and secure housing for women over 55, which is the fastest growing homeless population in Australia today. The Forgotten Women’s Goal is to provide safe, secure, fit-for-purpose and subsidised housing units with tailored support so older women can age in place and dignity. GARAGE SALE FOR A GOOD CAUSE Claire’s Cottage is calling on the community to grab a bargain and help keep its Community Pantry stocked this year. The Claire’s Cottage Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday 10 October and Sunday 11 October from 7am to 2pm at 19 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills. Every dollar raised will go directly towards sustaining the pantry during its busiest time of year. The pantry supports people experiencing cost-of-living pressures, including retirees, people with disability and local families doing it tough. People with intellectual disability who attend Claire’s Cottage help manage the pantry by sorting donations, checking stock and helping provide food and essentials to people in their community. The Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club will also be on hand with a sausage sizzle. Good-quality pre-loved donations are also welcome in the lead-up to the event. Julie Gerstel
AROUND THE VILLAGE LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER Sometimes it’s the little details that make you stop and take a second look. That’s certainly the case with the two artists currently featured at Makers on Main. In our Corner Gallery, Christa Coetzee has created a collection of contemporary mixed-media works that are anything but ordinary. Working from her studio amongst the bushland of Clear Mountain, Christa brings together expressive marks, natural materials and beautiful touches of gold and silver leaf. One of the things I particularly love about Christa’s work is the connection to the natural world. Her handmade eco-ink pens are created using foraged eucalyptus, adding another layer of nature and craftsmanship to each one-of-a-kind piece. From a distance they are striking; up close, the layers and details really come alive. In our Small Gallery, you’ll find new work from Anne Smitchens, working across acrylic and watercolour. Anne has
a lovely way of playing with colour and texture, creating artworks that have their own personality and invite you to spend a little time looking at them. Both artists have very different approaches, and that’s what makes having a gallery space like this so much fun. You can walk in not knowing what you’ll find, and leave having discovered an artist or artwork that catches you completely by surprise. I love seeing people come into Makers on Main and browse slowly, point things out to each other and sometimes find the piece they didn’t know they were looking for. So next time you’re in the village, pop in and take a look. Don’t just glance, look a little closer. And if you’re a local artist or maker who would like to be considered for one of our gallery spaces or interested in becoming a Makers on Main maker, we’d love to hear from you. PET BLESSINGS THIS SUNDAY Bring your pets along this Sunday 4 October at 8am to Pet Blessings at St Paul’s Everyone is welcome to bring along their friendly, well-behaved, restrained pets for a special pet blessing on St Francis’ Day. St Francis is the Patron Saint of animals and ecology. As a son from a wealthy family, he renounced his inheritance to serve God. He founded the Franciscan Order, emphasising simplicity, service to the poor and respect for all creation. His message of humility, peace and love for all creation remains profoundly relevant today,
ANOTHER INSPIRING CROP There’s something special about harvesting food you’ve grown yourself, especially when you pull something unexpected out of the ground. This week at Green Thumb Farm, our volunteers harvested yet another an inspiring crop of ginger, and what a harvest it was. The ginger had been quietly growing beneath the soil, and when we dug it up, some of the pieces were bigger than our volunteers’ hands. Moments like this are at the heart of what we’re trying to create at Green Thumb Farm: a place where people of all ages and abilities can connect with growing food and

This Sunday evening a Last Sunday at 6pm service will be held followed by dinner. Sunday school is held approximately a welcoming community. From our Saturday Farmgate Market and community volunteering opportunities to school programs and Little Green Thumbs sessions for young children and their carers, the farm is becoming a busy community space. You can learn all about what we do by visiting our website or dropping into our Farmgate Market on Saturday mornings between 8 and 11am. As every community group knows, fundraising is a full-time job for community organisations. So, we were super excited to be invited to join the Community Lottery. You can buy a ticket for just $2 for the chance to win prizes including a car or a holiday, while also choosing Green Thumb

They are held from 7am till noon on 10 October and 14 November and the Christmas Market will be on 12 December from 3 to 7pm. We would love to welcome you at any of our services. Come as you are. Sunday Services 7.30am Said Service 9am Service with Hymns Farm as your nominated group. 100% of the proceeds are donated to Green Thumb Farm. The Community Lottery closes on 8 October, so if you have some spare change and would like to support us while being in the running for some great prizes, simply visit communitylottery.com.au and select Green Thumb Farm as your community group. Now that we’ve dug up the ginger, what next? Well, some of it will be sold at our Farmgate Market, while some will be divided up and replanted so that we can continue growing ginger to harvest again next winter. Green Thumb Farm is at 2204 Mt Samson Road, Samford Valley. Susanne
AROUND THE VILLAGE JANE AUSTEN BALL, THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR People came from Tweed Heads, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and from across Brisbane to attend our annual Jane Austen Ball. Many people told us how eagerly it had been anticipated and how it’s the highlight of their year. Why is it so special? The Ball has a very magical quality making it different from most other forms of dancing. The key element is social togetherness, teamwork. It is not just about the steps or the music, but the connections created. Unlike other forms of dance, this dance is deeply rooted in community, tradition and shared joy. When paired with the pleasure of beautiful costumes it becomes even more remarkable. Many make great effort to create a new hand-crafted outfit each year. Others are pleased with a simple outfit, something repurposed from an op shop or bought online. This year for the first time, Sophia of Samford created a magnificent, elegant and sumptuous feast for us, a treat
for the eye and the palate. We are looking forward to working with her again next year. A huge thank you to our Samford Village Dance community for helping transform the Dayboro Community Hall into a Regency Ballroom, creating a glorious welcoming environment to all. The amazing music, as ever, was delightfully supplied by our talented band, Phillip’s Dog. We are so fortunate to be able to re-enact the sounds enjoyed by Jane Austen, music that lifts the spirit (and the feet). The enjoyment and excitement of the dancers was captured on film by our special photographer, Darby Chapman.
Our regular classes in Samford and Arana Hills are part of the City of Moreton Bay’s Healthy & Active programme, and cost only $4 per class. We are also involved in upcoming special events, such as the Ipswich Galvanised Festival, Abbey Heritage Festival and 4MBS Shakespeare Festival. You can be a part of this, step into history and join the fun. Our goal is to enrich our community through traditional dancing, fostering connections and creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. CLASSIC CARS THIS SUNDAY The Riley Motor Club Queensland is ready for their car show this Sunday 4 October at Samford Showgrounds. Two stunning classic cars, a 1948 MGTC Roadster and a 1964 Buick Riviera Coupe, will be among many others on display on the day. All profits from the Car Show will be donated to Samford Riding for Disabled. The MGTC Roadster was assembled on
6 January 1948 at Abingdon on Thames, Oxfordshire, England. “It is a blast to drive, with direct steering. It is bit of a bone shaker with a leaf-spring front axle and live rear axle. It is not the fastest, but the exhaust note makes up for that,” says Owner Ross Waite. It was purchased in October 2025 and was driveable, but in need of mechanical and cosmetic attention. Many parts were researched and repaired or replaced, including brakes, lights and wipers. Correct

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES ART WITH ALTITUDE RETURNS NEXT WEEKEND Next weekend, the mountain community of Mount Glorious will once again come alive with colour, creativity and connection as Art With Altitude returns to the Mount Glorious Community Hall for its tenth anniversary exhibition on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October from 9am to 4pm. Since 2015, Art With Altitude celebrates the remarkable artistic talent of the Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo communities, bringing together an inspiring and diverse collection of original paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fibre art, glasswork, drawings and more. For artist Ann O’Connor (pictured), who has been involved with Art With Altitude since its inception, the diversity of the exhibition is one of its greatest strengths. “The Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo artists are showing you their unique way of experiencing the world,” she says. “Come
along to the exhibition, feel it, experience it, soak it up, even take some home.” With artworks available for purchase across a range of price points, the exhibition offers an opportunity for both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers to take home something created by a local artist. But Art With Altitude is about much more than the artworks themselves. Set amongst the beautiful surrounds of Mount Glorious, the weekend offers visitors the chance to spend a day in the mountains, meet the
SOMETHING NAUGHTY IS COMING ... We have a little confession to make. Tawny Trails is planning something naughty for November. Not that kind of naughty. We’re talking about the good kind. The kind that involves saying yes to yourself for a change. The kind that means taking a day off from being organised, responsible and busy. The kind that might involve a scenic drive, a beautiful view, a long lunch, an unexpected discovery and possibly getting home a little later than planned. We’ve been quietly working behind the scenes
on something rather special. Something designed for people who love art, nature, beautiful places and good company. Something that might give you the perfect excuse to gather your favourite people and head for the hills. There will be things to discover. There will be reasons to linger. There may be a few surprises.

But we can tell you this: November is going to be a little different on Tawny Trails. So put a little space in your calendar. Start thinking about who you’d take with you. And keep an eye on Tawny Trails https://www.facebook.com/TawnyTrails, www.tawnytrails.com Because Naughty November is coming. Your official permission slip is almost ready. Danielle B Latta

With its combination of exceptional local art, mountain hospitality and community spirit, Art With Altitude continues to be a much-loved fixture on the Mount Glorious, Mount Nebo and Samford events calendar. So, if you’re looking for a reason to head up into the mountains, come and discover the artists, makers and creative voices of Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo. THE MAGIC OF MOSS Our meeting next Wednesday 7 October will feature a special presentation The Wonderful World of the Bryophytes by guest speaker Andrew Franks. Andrew is a consultant botanist and arborist, but his true passion lies in immersing himself into the microscopic world of bryophytes, that is, mosses, liverworts and hornworts. His extensive bryophyte surveys have taken him all over Queensland and beyond, earning him a leading reputation in the specialised field of moss. His presentation will introduce us to these often overlooked plants, revealing the wonderful microscopic world they occupy. So, if you can’t tell a hornwort from a liverwort, or a bryophyte from an epiphyte, then this is a great chance to learn. (You’re not alone, by the way.) Next Wednesday’s meeting is at the SCHUB, 2204 Mt Samson Road, at 7pm. The usual show and tell, Q&A, and plant ID segments will precede Andrew’s presentation, followed by refreshments and plant raffle draw (bring a little cash).
On Saturday September 5, 18 NPQ members and friends enjoyed an informative walk through the impressive Golds Scrub overlooking Lake Samsonvale, halfway between Samford and Dayboro. The 2ha remnant rainforest was fenced off, with great civic foresight, by the Gold family more than 100 years ago, preserving it for posterity. Its value has multiplied over time in keeping with its increasing rarity. It’s now only available to the public with prior permission from SEQ Water, although
nearby areas are open, as is the adjoining well-appointed Samsonvale Cemetery, all well worth a visit. Long time elderly residents Jack Marsh and Robert Backhouse assisted NPQ Samford president Peter Storer with plant identification. Our youngest companion iNaturalist also proved helpful. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES LEARN TO RECOGNISE MIST FLOWER BEFORE IT TAKES OVER Signs of spring are everywhere; new leaves, flowers, ducklings, swooping magpies and sunny days. Cedar Creek has become quieter as the flow of water slows. Our conversation has swung from “when will the rain stop” to “when will it rain”? Grasses have dried and crunch underfoot as we check our bushfire preparations. And yet, the creek banks and green gullies still offer refuge to moisture-loving life, us included. It’s where you’ll hear frogs, find ferns and maybe even fireflies. You’re also likely to see fluffy, white flowers appearing in bunches like clouds on a neat, low-growing plant that is easily overlooked when it’s not flowering. This is mist flower (Ageratina riparia) and once you learn to recognise it, you’ll discover it is widespread and not as innocent as it appears. It is sadly not a native wildflower, but a garden escapee originally from Central and South America. Mist flower thrives in damp conditions, which is why it is a threat to the natural habitat our Bushcare group strives to protect. We find it everywhere from the rocky creek bed to the steep banks and beyond on moist slopes. We even find it growing beneath existing vegetation because it needs very
little sunlight. Weeding mist flower is a high priority in spring because each mature plant can produce an astonishing 10,000 to 100,000 seeds in a season. The tiny seeds usually travel only a short distance by wind, but our waterways and human activities disperse them far and wide. This aggressive invader also uses chemical warfare. Compounds released from its leaves can inhibit the growth of other plants, helping it dominate its native neighbours. Plus, it puts down roots wherever stems touch the ground and can regrow from tiny fragments. In South-East Queensland, the threat posed by mist flower extends beyond the plants it smothers. It is implicated in the loss of habitat for rare stream-dwelling frogs and several threatened native plants, from tiny orchids to the giant spear lily. The good news is that now is the ideal time to check for mist flower on your property. But be warned, after it sets seed, the top dies back and the base waits for the right conditions to reshoot. So don’t assume it’s gone. Join us at 8:30am in Andy Williams Park on the second Thursday of the month to chat with one of Moreton Bay’s Environmental Officers or give Fiona a call on 0421 071 412. CELEBRATE LOVE YOUR BOOKSHOP DAY Something exciting is brewing at Baffies Oan Books this spring. On Saturday 10 October, the Samford community is invited to join the fun of the Brisbane Family Book Trail. First launched in 2024 to champion independent bookshops, this fantastic initiative aims to foster a lifelong love of reading in young minds. Love Your Bookshop Day celebrates the role independent bookstores play in our neighbourhoods, providing a vital space for discovery, connection and community. For one special day, families can grab a beautifully illustrated event map designed by the acclaimed Andy Geppert and embark on a literary adventure across the city. As children trail through participating bookshops, they can collect unique stickers, explore beautiful shelves and dive into free arts and crafts hosted by local booksellers. Baffies Oan Books is hosting a special owl-themed workshop. Inspired by the powerful owl nesting in our beloved store mural, children can colour and collage their very own owl picture, which can double as a creative reading tracker. Upcoming events Love Your Bookshop Day Saturday 10 October, 9am to 3.30pm Brain Candy Book Club Tuesday 13 October, 1pm to 2pm The group will gather to discuss Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro and A Study in Sparkling by Jodi McAlister Tuesday 27th October (8:30am) Book Breakfast for the release of ACOTAR A Court of Splintered Harmony by Sarah J. DAYBORO DIRT JUMP OPENS
THE PEARL OF TAGAI TOWN Lenora Thaker Lenora Thaker, a Meriam and Wagedagam woman descended from Torres Strait Islanders, has created a remarkable historical fiction about those islands and the shanty settlements of Cairns during the 1930’s and 40s. based on her father’s experiences growing up in Malay Town where Islanders, Malays, Japanese, Aborigines —basically anyone who wasn’t white —were segregated. Thaker weaves traditional language and culture seamlessly into a warm captivating tale with vividly drawn characters, that exposes the racism and oppression of the times, including the forced removal of children, the unfair judicial system and the forced internment of the Japanese pearlers and their mixed-race families during the War. Strong-minded, whip-smart, hardworking, ambitious Pearl Able, teenage daughter of Torres Strait islanders who left their sea-bound home for a better life, yearns for independence. Caught by her family’s traditional values, the jealousies and rivalries of her peers, and the strictures of the “White Australia” policy, she struggles to thrive in close-knit Tagai. After Pearl rescues elderly white Mrs Tattle from an accident in her store in nearby white Figwood, Pearl is offered a job. She sets about becoming indispensable, the first woman of colour to work in a Figwood shop. Teddy, the son of the local bank manager, becomes her soul-mate lover. Her own parents and his vehemently oppose the relationship. They marry. Heartbreak begins. Teddy joins up and is shipped out. Pearl is left to face the most excruciating losses, question her spiritual beliefs and fight for what she values most. This is a sobering story of resilience, faith, and courage, capturing a small fragment of Australia’s social landscape at a time that changed our society. The opening chapter is clunky as often happens with a debut novel, but it is worth persevering. The insights gained are worth it.
City of Moreton Bay’s first official dirt jump is now open at Dayboro. Dirt jump riders teamed up with City project managers and expert track builders to build the track. The track will cater to riders of all ages and levels. A group of riders joined experts from Trailworx for a weekend track-building workshop in July, bringing their shared vision to life . It followed a design workshop in October last year. The $130,000 Dayboro Dirt Jump is at Bill Rowe Park (McKenzie Street). City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said it is commonplace within the dirt
jump community for riders to be involved in maintaining jumps and, in this case, locals have learned important skills from professional track builders. “There’s a learn to jump line with return track, intermediate and advanced jump line and a variety of features. We’ve also provided sandstone block seating and a water bubbler for riders and spectators. “Dirt jump tracks are a great way to get active and enjoy being outdoors. We know when tracks are built without technical guidance or approval, they can create safety risks, disturb local wildlife and impact nearby residents. That’s why we’ve worked with riders and the experts to create a first for our City,” he said.
We invite you to join us at the SAMFORD HISTORICAL MUSEUM to help restore, record and display our very large stock of interesting artifacts for present and future generations to enjoy.
For more than 40 years we have gathered and preserved items reminiscent of farm and family life in the Samford Valley in the early days.
Call in any Wednesday or Sunday to meet our Volunteers and find out about our activities. The Samford Museum complex is in STATION STREET, next to John Scott Park in the heart of SAMFORD VILLAGE.
Send an enquiry email to info@samfordmuseum.org.au or phone our President Mike Hannon - 0417 609 200 - for a chat. THE VILLAGE PUMP 2 OCTOBER 2026 Page 25
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ARANA BRIDGE CLUB Yes, the Arana Bridge Club had a celebration party to mark its 40th anniversary on Saturday 12 September. This was a special day and was attended by 100 members of the club and invited guests.
Also attending was Judy Valentine who was responsible for starting the club in 1986. Judy was the driving force behind starting a bridge club and the first games were held at her Arana Hills home. After this, play was held in the Community Centre in Dawson Parade, Arana Hills. The club had a wonderful day playing bridge including a beautiful cake and lunch as part of the occasion. The club, over the years, has helped many community members learn how to play bridge, exercise their mind, leave their homes, make new friends and mix in a very friendly and supportive environment. The club holds two courses a year for beginners, and this results in many people joining the club. Help with play sessions are held to assist people. In addition, the club holds two Bridge congresses every year where players come from around Australia. At these events there can be up to 120 players. The Arana Bridge Club has in excess of 255 members. Play is held at 20 Tramway Street, Ferny Grove in a modern airconditioned building. Enquiries 3851 0299 or email info@ aranabridgeclub.org.au
