SAMFORD SHINES AT GRAND FINALS
Samford Netball Club has closed out a standout season in style, with four of its five grand final teams claiming premierships in the Downey Park Netball Association competition last weekend. Samford 10 (12yrs) kicked off the club’s grand final day with a 27-9 win, before Samford 1 (Opens) followed up with a commanding 51-23 victory. Samford 3 (Inters) then fought out a tighter contest to win 49-43, and Samford 7 (Cadets) continued the winning run with a 25-16 result. Samford 4 (Cadets) played the final match
of the day, going down 42-39 in a close, hard-fought grand final. Five grand finals is an incredible effort for a club of Samford’s size, and to come away with four premierships is something every player, coach, manager and supporter should be so proud of. The results cap off a season to remember for the club. If this season has proven anything, it’s that there’s a place at Samford Netball Club for players of all ages and abilities, so why not make 2027 the year you or your family join in the fun? VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD HIGH PRAISE FOR SAMFORD MUSEUM We recently visited Samford Museum on a school outing. The day was so well organised and the resources they have on site are wonderful. I wanted to give a special thanks to the presenters. They were all just amazing. Their knowledge, their kind and patient interaction with the students, and their genuine passion for their topics made every activity so interesting and engaging. It was terrific. The students had a great day, and I am sure they also learnt so much about life in the past. It was a real eye-opener for them. Marshall Road Primary School

PILATES IN SAMFORD, A SHOUT OUT FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS Two years ago, I gave Well Body Pilates in Samford a try. I signed up for the introductory pack, and I’ve been a regular ever since I’ve clocked up 150 sessions based on a goal of two classes a week. I’m in my mid, okay, late 50s, and my goal is to keep playing social basketball. Pilates builds strength all over, helps with balance and introduces you to muscles you never knew you had. That strength gives me confidence when I take knocks on the court, and even helps me sink some outside shots (hoorah). I love how much stronger my ankles are and the balance I have. This year, I’m preparing to play in the Pan Pacific Masters. I’m no athlete, just an office worker who once busted a disc and learnt the hard way how important it is to look after myself. Pilates is not a luxury spend for me; it’s an investment in my health. I’d rather spend that money now than spend it fixing something and being in pain. In today’s class I met Sue. She has a few niggles and some mobility challenges which made her think she couldn’t do Pilates. But here she is, one week in and realising she can. She’s getting expert advice from the very experienced instructors on how to do things safely and within her range. I can assure you that it’s a very safe and friendly environment where you can build confidence and achieve your own personal goals. I fully recommend that you give it a try. Liz Billing

DIVE INTO SUMMER WITH SAMFORD STINGRAYS Summer is just around the corner and what better way to spend Friday nights than beside the pool with friends, a sausage sizzle and a little bit of friendly competition? The Samford Stingrays are getting ready for another exciting season, with our first club night kicking off on Friday 9 October, and this year, we’re especially looking forward to welcoming lots of our youngest swimmers, our Pups. Our Pups are generally aged between 5 and 8 years old and club night is a fantastic introduction to the fun and excitement of swimming competitively. You don’t need to be the fastest swimmer in the pool and you certainly don’t need to have years of racing experience. In fact, one of the things we love most about Stingrays is that swimming is about challenging yourself and achieving your own personal best. Every week swimmers are grouped with other swimmers of a similar ability and speed, rather than simply being matched according to age. This means children get to race against swimmers who are at a similar stage to them, giving everyone a genuine opportunity to compete, improve and have fun. For our younger swimmers, this can be a huge confidence boost. They learn how
to race, how to prepare for an event, how to listen for their marshalling and how to approach the blocks, all while surrounded by supportive coaches, parents and teammates. And there is plenty more to club night than just swimming. Our Pups race early in the evening, giving them plenty of time afterwards to relax, catch up with friends, watch the older swimmers and enjoy the all-important BBQ. For many of our families Friday night at Stingrays quickly becomes one of the highlights of the week. The club is also a great place for children to build friendships and confidence. New swimmers are welcomed into the team and supported by experienced swimmers, club captains and committee members, so they don’t need to arrive knowing anyone. For our older swimmers, the new season will also bring plenty of exciting racing and opportunities to chase those all-important
PB’s. There is something incredibly motivating about seeing your own time improve, whether that means dropping a fraction of a second or achieving a goal you’ve been working towards for months. At Samford Stingrays, we’re not just racing the swimmer beside us, we’re racing ourselves. So, if you have a swimmer who is ready to give club swimming a go come along to our first club night on Friday 9 October and give it a try. For more information about joining Samford Stingrays, or to ask any questions, contact our Registrar at registrar@ samfordswimclub.com.au. LOCAL NEWS KAKADU ORGANICS WINS MAJOR EXPORTER AWARD Local business Kakadu Organics has been named The Indigenous Exporter of the Year at The Supplier Diversity Awards held in Perth in August. This award recognises and celebrates the success of Kakadu Organics in taking Australian native foods and wellness products to an international audience, while supporting remote communities. Other finalists in this category were South Australian-based Munda Wines and Kirrikin, a luxury fashion label. Kakadu Organics has established a strong and growing international export
footprint, with trade partnerships across Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand. Kakadu Organics has also been named a finalist in the upcoming Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards, to be announced on 8 October. Kylie-Lee Bradford, the founder of Kakadu Organics, is a proud Murumburr woman from the Patonga aboriginal community in the heart of Kakadu National Park. Her mum is a traditional owner of this region and a well-respected elder. The business, which started as a shop in Samford Village, has now shifted its focus towards online retail with products curated from Kylie’s knowledge of native botanicals
and bush foods. The business is also a social enterprise, incorporating a dedicated giveback programme to nurture culture and empower women to thrive.
DISCOVER JOY AND HARMONY BRINGING BALANCE TO YOUR SPRING GARDEN It’s our spring seasonal cross over time in Samford. This can be a tricky time for vegetable gardeners. Understanding how balance can be woven into your vegetable gardening will help. Crops from our cooler season planted late could be suffering from too much heat, such as rocket going to seed a bit earlier than you would like. While heat loving crops, such as cucumbers, may be growing slowly because it is not warm enough In our local climate, the spring to early summer time is normally one of increasing heat, low humidity and more often than not, low rainfall. The garden soil may be repelling moisture, compacted, lacking in structure and dry. Fruiting vegetable crops that thrive at this time of the year are watery. Having good water holding capacity in the soil is vital for success. Here are three tips I work with, using balance as the framework to create more resilient crops during spring to early summer: Soil Striving for the ideal balance of nutrients, minerals, air and water to provide the habitat for life in the soil is a yearlong process. In our spring, you can help by loosening compacted soil to get some air into it, watering more regularly and adding biologically active liquids. Crop selection Working consciously with seasonal is Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 18 SEPTEMBER 2026
essential. Select crops that are ideal for this time of the year and if you want crops that are more heat sensitive, create microclimates with shade to get them started. Balance crops to achieve biodiversity and companion planting. Activating life processes Plant vitality is a balance of sufficient light, drainage, water, appropriate soil and plant management. We find biodynamic soil and plant preparations are an essential part of this framework to lift plant vitality to its optimum and cope with weather extremes during spring. From my 30 years of experimenting with vegetable, herbs and edible flower growing in our climate using organic and biodynamic methods, spring can be a bounteous time for vegetable gardeners. I provide one-onone and group coaching to guide you to a consistently productive, functional and beautiful food garden over the year. This coaching also focuses on deepening your connection to nature or inner gardening, as I call it. More information at www.myfoodgarden. com.au Peter Kearney
Looking for a fun way to lift your spirits and meet fantastic local people? The Samford Community Singers always welcomes new members, and we want you to join our musical family. Whether you are a seasoned vocalist or only sing in the shower, our choir is open to all men and women, of all ages and skill level. There are no stressful auditions here, just a shared love for making music together. The benefits of group singing stretch far beyond the music sheet. Health studies show that singing is a natural boost for physical and mental wellbeing. It improves lung capacity, enhances posture and lowers stress by releasing feel-good endorphins. It acts as a gym workout for your brain and lungs. Socially our rehearsals provide a warm, inclusive space to connect with your neighbours. Group singing builds fast friendships and creates a wonderful sense of belonging and community pride right here in Samford and surrounding areas. Term 4 commences on 5 October and is a great opportunity to meet our group and find your voice. We meet every Monday from 6.30 to 8.30pm at the Farmers Hall. The first two rehearsals are free. $150 per term with all music provided. For more information, please email samfordcommunitysingers@ gmail.com. Marie Grealy
LOCAL NEWS With a bit of help from Chappy Joss and Rotary volunteers, Janelle and Carol, the children worked hard to prepare for their fundraising event. They spent many lunchtimes making craft items to sell, and some students even worked on their items at home to complete them in time. That’s true dedication. In other Rotary / Samford State School news, Chappy Joss put the call out to our Rotary Club for help needed at the school’s Father’s Day Breakfast again this year. Well, they can hardly ask the dads to come and cook the BBQ for themselves. Our members are always happy to help at these school events (along with several volunteer mums, teachers and the admin team too). It was great to see so many children and parents enjoying, not only breakfast together, but some fabulous entertainment provided by the school band. Some of the Rotarians were seen rocking along to T.N.T. I wish we’d captured a photo of that!
Rotary Club of Samford Valley ROTARY CLUB COLLABORATES WITH SAMFORD STATE SCHOOL Our Rotary Club is very proud of our hardworking EarlyAct Club and this term’s fundraising event, planned and organised by the students, is testament to why we are justifiably proud They made a profit of $296.80 to donate to their chosen charity. Regular readers may recall that the EarlyAct Club at Samford State School is a Rotary-sponsored lunchtime club for students in years 4 to 6. The main goal of the club is to encourage young people to embrace the Rotary motto of Service Above Self by getting involved in community projects. Rather than rushing in, our young members think deeply about the needs of our community, and under the guidance of the School Chaplain, Josslyn Cathcart, they research community
A TEE-RRIFIC TIME WAS HAD BY ALL For Father’s Day Samford State School OSHC hosted a free community event for families called Par-Tee for Dad. It was a golf-themed celebration. The Caddie Kids, a group of older children, helped run the event. Fun golf-themed treats such as golf ball cake pops and tee-time lamingtons were served and guests could cool down with an icy cold juice popper or water from the beverage cart. Families made golf themed cards for the fathers, uncles, grandpas and other special figures in their lives, decorated golf balls

using sharpies and played putt-putt on the oval. Lots of families attended and everyone had a great time getting to know each other better. These events help us to build relationships within the OSHC service and create genuine connections with the families who attend. During regular drop-off and collection times, interactions can often be brief, with families understandably needing to quickly collect their children and continue with their day. Community events such as this provide a relaxed and meaningful opportunity for educators, children and families to connect, engage in conversation and strengthen our sense of community.

COMPARE THE PAIR GREY AND LITTLE (RUFOUS) SHRIKE-THRUSH The Grey Shrike-thrush is one of Australia’s most common and widely distributed birds, found throughout the continent except in the driest deserts. It lives in a wide range of treed habitats, from tall open forests to arid scrublands. In our district, Grey Shrike-thrushes can occur almost anywhere from parks and gardens to local bushland, but they generally avoid large open paddocks (as do most bush birds). They are often seen foraging on the road early in the morning, particularly around Mounts Nebo and Glorious. The Grey Shrike-thrush (pictured on the left) is one of our plainest birds, grey-brown above, grey below with white lores (the area between the bill and the eye) contrasting with the grey head and black bill.
Females are even plainer, with pale grey lores and a dark grey bill, while juveniles and immatures have fine streaking on the underparts. The beautiful rhythmic song “pur-pur-pur QUEE-YULE” or “too-tootoo-weet” is one of the most characteristic sounds of the Australian bush, which gave the species one of its earlier names of Harmonious Shrike-thrush. Pairs are sedentary and glean a wide range of arthropods from tree branches or among leaf litter on the ground, but they will occasionally take seeds and fruit. They can become quite confident around houses and will sometimes nest in hanging baskets, particularly among ferns. The related Little (or Rufous) Shrikethrush (pictured on the right) of eastern and northern coastal Australia is also found in our district, but is seen less often because it prefers denser habitats such as rainforest, creekside vegetation, thick gullies and wetter woodlands. As the name suggests, it is somewhat
POSTIE BIKE CHALLENGE This year, the Postie Bike Challenge began its journey at the Samford Showgrounds on Sunday, 5 September. During this 10-day adventure more than 80 enthusiastic bike riders travel thousands of kilometers across the outback on Honda CT110 postie bikes. Founded in 2002, the event has become an iconic endurance event that puts the stamina and camaraderie of the riders to the test, while supporting many charities and community groups. Page 6 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 18 SEPTEMBER 2026
With Darwin as the final destination, riders must overcome many obstacles on their 4 000km journey. These bikes are famously slow, top speed is capped at 75km/hr and riders need to average about
smaller than Grey Shrike-thrush, with rufous underparts, olive-brown upperparts and a large pale pink-brown bill. The song is a rich and melodious string of piping whistles “tu-whee-wot-wot-wot” or “tu-wewhat-what”. It is sedentary, foraging for arthropods among foliage and branches in dense vegetation and occasionally on the ground on logs or among leaf litter. Although generally unobtrusive when not calling, they are often detected by rustling noises as they lift and tear bark from branches and trunks while hunting for insects. They usually nest in an upright fork among foliage in shrubs or trees, and sometimes in a tangle of vines, usually Lawyer Vine Calamus caryotoides. If you want to attract these delightful songsters to your yard, you need to retain (or plant) mid-storey trees and shrubs that are so often lacking in Samford properties. Both species are seen regularly at the Samford Eco-Corridor. Article and photos: Peter Storer
400km per day. Registered Honda postie bikes are provided and are fitted with a rear plastic milk crate and a 5-litre jerry can for extra fuel. Participants come from a variety of countries, including New Zealand and the UK. Bronte and Nick, managers at the showgrounds, were very pleased to support this grand adventure. Local community groups were involved as well, with The Happy Tummy and The Men’s Shed providing food for the intrepid travellers with typical Samford hospitality.

SMILES AND SPRINGTIME AT SAMFORD PLAYGROUP Spring has officially sprung at Samford Playgroup, and we’ve been enjoying a wonderful few weeks filled with special visitors, movement, sensory play, creativity and plenty of opportunities to learn through play. We were delighted to welcome Esther and Reece from Admire Dentistry (Samford Smiles) for a special visit. They spoke with our little friends about how to keep their teeth clean and healthy and shared a story about visiting the dentist. The children then had the opportunity to dress up as dentists, complete with masks and gloves, and practise cleaning some
model teeth. It was a fun and engaging way to help children become familiar with dental care and encourage healthy habits from an early age. Miss Yoga was also back at playgroup, taking our friends on some wonderful imaginary adventures. The children headed off on a surfing adventure before venturing through the jungle, incorporating dancing, music, stretching and yoga poses along the way. Each session finished with some calming mindful meditation. Yoga is a fantastic activity for young children, supporting balance, coordination, flexibility and body awareness. It can also introduce children to simple breathing and mindfulness techniques, helping them practise slowing down, regulating their emotions and finding moments of calm. Our new playgroup resources have also been a huge hit. Mini bricks have inspired plenty of constructing, building and imaginative play, while our homemade sensory sand, created by mixing play
sand, cornflour and oil has been perfect for moulding, shaping, scooping and creating. These hands-on experiences are wonderful for developing fine motor skills and encouraging creativity. We have also been experimenting with our new Air Toobz, a fun STEM resource that allows children to explore airflow, movement and cause and effect. There has been plenty of excitement watching objects travel through the tubes. Of course, we couldn’t welcome spring without some beautiful seasonal play. Our spring messy-play table featured chickpeas, different shades of green and pink butterfly pasta for scooping, pouring and exploring. At the playdough table, children created their own spring-inspired worlds using flower stones, figures and plenty of imagination. We can’t wait to see what the rest of spring brings at Samford Playgroup. Upcoming Events: End of Term Party Friday the 18 September (3 to 5pm) featuring Dansland Music, sponsored by Tom Norris from LOYLE Real Estate.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SAMFORD VALLEY WEATHER CELEBRATES 20 YEARS
Samford Valley Weather is celebrating its 20th year of operation with the launch of a brand-new website and a range of new features designed to provide even more useful information for the Samford community and surrounding areas. The software behind the old website had reached the end of its useful life, so I have rebuilt the site from the ground up using WordPress and Divi. While it retains the familiar look and feel of Samford Valley Weather, the new site provides a much more modern experience, improved presentation and many new features. Some of the additions include Warnings Portal, bringing together warnings and information affecting Samford and nearby areas from a range of sources, including the Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Fire Department and Energex. Aircraft Information, live information about aircraft flying over the Samford area, together with historical flight activity dating back to 2021, using data from my local aircraft monitoring system. Updated Trivia, a refreshed and validated collection of weather and local information. And, of course, all the previous favourites remain, including Samford Climate, Astronomy, current weather observations, historical weather information and more. I have also created a new Facebook page, Samford Valley Weather & Information Service. The page receives daily weather summaries and Orange and Red alerts and provides another way for the community to keep up to date and provide feedback or suggestions about the website and service. I hope you enjoy exploring the new site, and I genuinely welcome suggestions, feedback and reports of the inevitable bugs. If I don’t know about them, I can’t fix them. Samford Valley Weather remains a free community service. Developing and operating it involves ongoing costs as well as many hours of my own time, so donations of any size are always greatly appreciated. Contact and Donate buttons are available on the website. Visit www.samfordweather.com or follow us on Facebook: @SamfordValleyWeather
SOMETHING NEW FOR SAMFORD LOCAL ANNA LOBLEY After more than nine years with the same real estate business, Samford local Anna Lobley has made the first major agency move of her career, partnering with One Group. For Anna, it is a big step, but one that feels like the right fit for where she is heading and how she wants to continue supporting local families across 4520. Having spent her entire real estate career working in and around the Samford region, Anna has built strong relationships with local homeowners, buyers and families over many years. She also lives the lifestyle herself. Anna and her family are part of the local community, with horses, riding and life around Samford all forming part of what she loves about the area. The new partnership with One Group gives Anna something she has not had before: the backing of a much larger network, with nine offices across South East Queensland. For locals selling, that means their property can be seen by
a much wider audience than what a single local office may be able to reach on its own. For buyers, it means stronger connections to people looking to move into Samford and the wider 4520 area from across Brisbane and beyond. Anna sees that broader reach as a major positive, while keeping the part of her work that matters most to her: local knowledge, personal service and being someone people can trust through a major move. “I’m really proud of what I’ve built over the past nine years, and I’m grateful for the people who have supported me along the way. This next step gives me the chance to offer local families more, while still staying close to the community I love.” Anna will continue working throughout the Samford region and supporting local families who are buying, selling or moving within 4520. She also plans to continue her involvement in the community and remain a familiar local face. For Anna, it is a new chapter, but very much the same focus: helping local people make their next move with confidence.

AROUND THE VILLAGE MEET CLOSEBURN’S NEWEST RURAL FIREFIGHTERS Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a volunteer rural firefighter? For three Closeburn locals, wondering wasn’t enough, they decided to find out for themselves. Say hello to Terry Lawrence, Sarah Buglar and Louis Stares, the newest qualified firefighters at Closeburn Rural Fire Brigade and the latest locals to put their hands up to help keep our community safe. Getting there has involved a lot more than simply jumping aboard a yellow fire truck. Over the past few months, Terry, Sarah and Louis have given up evenings and weekends to complete their Basic Firefighting training. There has been plenty of theory to learn, equipment to master and practical exercises to complete, along with the heat, smoke and challenges of training around live fire. They have learned how fire behaves and how quickly weather, terrain and vegetation can change what is happening on the fireground. They’ve learned to operate firefighting pumps, handle hoses, work with different water supplies and use the
equipment carried on our trucks. And, despite what Hollywood might have you believe, firefighting isn’t simply about looking good in a helmet and pointing a hose at the flames. A huge part of the training is learning how to work safely as a crew. Clear communication, teamwork, situational awareness and looking out for your mates are essential when conditions are hot, noisy and changing quickly. Closeburn RFB’s multi-award-winning Training Officer Neil Glentworth said, “While our members are volunteers, there is nothing casual about
GOURMET LOCAL PLANTS If it’s possible to have a feast of samples, then that’s exactly what guest speakers Jo and David Roberts dished up at our September meeting. Even though their appetisers were tasty as Spanish tapas and amazing as Middle Eastern meze, there was nothing international about the bountiful nibbles. It was all about local Aussie tucker, endemic to Samford Valley. Take a gander at the menu; savoury bunya nut puffs garnished with green salad featuring swamp dock and scrambled lily shoots, paired with lillipilli mocktails. For dessert, the Cedar Creek bush food aficionados plated up wattle seed palmiers, cookies and cake, as well as small-leaf tamarind jam tarts. The delectable treats created so much tasty discussion that David had some difficulty maintaining audience contact as he presented information on more than 20 Page 10 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 18 SEPTEMBER 2026
freshly harvested samples of local culinary plants. “These are all things you could consider growing in this district,” David said, with the caveat that some bush foods are edible but not palatable. their training. They train to recognised national standards and must demonstrate the practical skills, knowledge and safety awareness needed to operate effectively on a fireground.” Terry, Sarah and Louis have now successfully completed that journey and are ready to put those skills into action with the Closeburn crew. Their achievement is also a reminder of what volunteer firefighting is all about. Behind every yellow fire truck heading down the road are local people who have left families, work, dinner or a comfortable bed because someone in their community needs help. With what could be a busy fire season ahead, having another three trained firefighters ready to answer the call is great news for Closeburn and our surrounding communities. Congratulations Terry, Sarah and Louis, you’ve earned it. Welcome to the crew. Our volunteer firefighters are ready to respond 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. And remember, if it’s life-threatening or an emergency, always call 000. Seeds of Sterculia quadrifida can be eaten raw or roasted and taste like peanuts, hence the common name peanut tree. Wombat berry roots have a carrot flavour, while the rather insipid fruit of Melastoma malabathricum will turn your tongue blue, hence its lizard-like common name. According to pioneer English settler Tom Petrie, the local Aboriginal people relied for their staple calories on the rhizomes of bulrush, water fern, bracken and cunjevoi, although the latter needed specific treatment to remove toxins, as did the large black bean seeds. As promised, Jo and David’s pop-up restaurant certainly proved a tasty treat for mind and palate. AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Rural Fire Brigade FIRE SEASON IS HERE The weather conditions on Father’s Day saw in increase in fire activity across Queensland with more than 70 fires recorded. Locally, it was what we refer to as a 30/30/30 day, temperature above 30C, humidity below 30% and wind 30kph. (We were on high alert with local readings of 34C, 17%, 28kph) The Fire Danger Rating was at High and all Fire Permits were suspended for 24 hours. Measures were put in place for the day, so our brigade could respond quickly in the event of a fire.

FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW A few months ago a lady called Deb posted on the Samford Community page that her 99-year-old mother knitted scarves and had many to give away. Deb asked for ideas and so began a collection starting with 12 scarves, which evolved into a collection of scarves and beanies for the Mission to Seafarers and blankets, doonas, sleeping bags, rugs, quilts and so on for rough sleepers at St John’s Cathedral in Ann St. Thanks to the inspiration of Thea Morrison (pictured), supported by daughter Deb and the generosity of people in Samford and Dayboro areas, we have now delivered our final load for this year, 3 full carloads. We intend this to be an annual collection named, Thea’s Mission to Rough Sleepers and Seafarers.
Many thanks to everyone who donated clean items in good condition. Your contributions have been gratefully appreciated. Scarves and beanies are provided to visiting seafarers in need of items in our chilly winter weather. With clean warm bedding and meals provided at The Cathedral, rough sleepers have a more comfortable night. All Things Nice preloved clothing boutique

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Museum FROM ANVIL TO MUSEUM: BILL GREGG’S LEGACY Long before cars and tractors changed everyday life in the Samford district, the ring of a blacksmith’s hammer was a familiar and welcome sound. For many local families, William “Bill” Gregg senior was part of that world: practical, skilled, and always close to the horses, tools and farm work that kept the community moving. Bill began his working life at just 16 in his father’s blacksmith shop in George Street, Brisbane. After his father died, Bill took over the business himself. He later moved the shop to Musgrave Road, Red Hill, where two men worked alongside him. School children walking home would often pause outside to watch the sparks fly and the men at work. At that time the Gregg family lived at Ithaca and Bill travelled to work by horse and sulky, sometimes letting the horse graze in a nearby park while he got on with the day’s jobs. A photograph of Bill’s blacksmith
shop now forms part of the museum’s curated photographic collection, giving visitors a glimpse of this once-busy trade. As a young man, Bill enjoyed many sports, but horses were a lifelong interest. He was well known in both racehorse and trotting circles, so it is no surprise that his blacksmithing skills were closely tied to the equine world. In 1937 Bill bought a property on what is now Greggs Road, Samford, and his family settled into the district as dairy farmers. He still did some blacksmithing on the farm, but during the Second World War he was called up for service as a blacksmith and opened a shop in Samford. Locals came to him for help, and deployed American soldiers also had their horses shod there. Samford resident Norm Knowles worked in
the shop and Bill continued blacksmithing locally until the end of the war. Blacksmiths were essential to early rural life. They sharpened knives, repaired tools, made and mended metalwork, and kept working horses properly shod. In a farming valley, that made the blacksmith a very busy and valued person. Bill passed away in 1995, and his son later bequeathed Bill’s blacksmithing tools and anvil to the Samford Museum. Today, the museum keeps that story alive. A copy of Bill Gregg Senior’s certificate from the Pine Rivers Show hangs on the wall, and the forge still comes to life for scheduled groups and monthly openings. Visitors can enjoy safe copper work demonstrations and the museum’s blacksmith can even help sharpen garden tools and other implements by request. It is a warm reminder that local history is not only something to read about, but it can also still be heard, handled and appreciated. BOOK REVIEW BY JULIE MARTIN BAD NEIGHBOURS Joanne Jenkins Joanne Jenkins’s third novel Bad Neighbours reveals her cast of characters in more colourful detail than in previous works, as her legal expertise weaves intricately through her narrative. The indomitable Ruth Lawson, partner in a successful law firm, is followed by unexplained deaths wherever she goes. When she moves into an elegant Art Nouveau apartment complex near the Sydney Harbour, a homeless young man Ben is poisoned in a lean-to garden shed. He used to live in the building until his father died and their flat was sold to pay some debts. Ruth concludes that the culprit is one of The Lumen’s residents. Is it Andrew or his trophy wife, the coolly calculating influencer Silver who live in the renovated penthouse and dodge the constraints of the
tenants’ association; faded pop star Zara who sublets a room to unconventional young lawyer Sybil who works for Ruth; the strict head of the owners’ committee Stella; Lucas a reclusive computer game designer (and Mavis his dog); or elderly couple Lawrence and Humphrey who wreak small revenges on those they dislike? Many regarded Ben as ‘a problem’. Ruth is convinced the police are dismissive of Ben’s death, so she instigates an unconventional investigation. The police are not impressed. She becomes a suspect because she has been adjacent to a number of murders in the previous couple of years. Her work is so badly affected she has to
step away; her friend Crack and her superior deceive her; and her partner is overseas, unaware of her deep trouble so give little support. Ruth has to try to clear her name by finding the real killer, with the help of Sylvia, her son Jack and a couple of others. Bad Neighbours is a cautionary tale of fraud, greed, risk taking and selfish indulgence, spiced with humour and the wayward intricacies of the property market. Jenkins also explores the challenges of high-rise, cooperative living, renovation, property development and corruption. It’s a good read.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SAMFORD FARMERS HALL: A BUSY YEAR AND AN EXCITING FUTURE PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2026 There’s never a dull moment at Samford Farmers Hall, and 2026 has been no exception. For more than a century, the Hall has been part of the fabric of Samford Village. This year, it has once again been buzzing with activity, bringing people together for classes, performances, celebrations, community gatherings and important life moments. From yoga and fitness classes to singing and acting lessons, dance groups, theatre productions, community meetings and Sunday church services, the Hall has been busy throughout the year. It has also provided a much-loved venue for christenings, birthday parties, wedding receptions, wakes and many other gatherings. And that is what makes the grand old lady special. It isn’t simply a venue, it’s a place where memories are made. One of the highlights of the year has been our continuing partnership with SPADEwerx Community Theatre. Their productions, Oh Gallimaufry and Nothing to See Here, brought creativity, laughter and theatrical energy to the Hall, while showcasing the wonderful talent that exists within our local community. If you haven’t experienced a SPADEwerx show yet, put it on your list,
you’re missing one of Samford’s great local cultural experiences! While maintaining the Hall remains important, the Committee has also been looking to the future. This year’s maintenance and equipment work has highlighted ways for making the Hall more useful and adaptable, including creating larger and more flexible spaces for theatre and community activities, as well as additional administrative areas. The aim is to future-proof this much-loved community asset and ensure it continues to meet the needs of Samford as the village grows and changes. There’s more to come, so watch this space. Of course, none of this happens without volunteers. The Hall is managed by a small but dedicated committee comprising Volker Jahnke, David Roberts, Jo Roberts, Tim Beiers and Don Cousins. Like many community organisations, we could use a few more helping hands. If you’re community-minded and happy to roll up your sleeves, we’d love to hear from you. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, 12 October 2026 at Samford

Farmers Hall, and everyone in our local communities is welcome. Come along, meet the team and find out what’s happening behind the scenes. We will also be saying farewell to our Manager and Bookings Officer, Natia Da Silva, who has taken on an exciting new professional role further afield. Natia has made an enormous contribution to the Hall, helping modernise our operations through the introduction of our online accounting system and digital booking platform, and the further development of our fantastic new website. We are very grateful for everything Natia has done and wish her every success and plenty of exciting adventures in her new role. Importantly, Samford Farmers Hall is a community-owned facility, held in trust by volunteers for the benefit of the district. Its future depends on all of us, the people who hire it, perform in it, attend events, volunteer their time and support local activities. After more than 100 years, the Hall is still going strong, and with the support of the Samford and Districts community, we intend to keep it that way for generations to come. Want to use the Hall? Bookings can be made through the Hall’s website or by contacting us on 0422 054 378. Here’s to another year of community, creativity, celebration, and an exciting future for Samford Farmers Hall. DID YOU KNOW? GLENGARIFF HISTORIC ESTATE CHANGES HANDS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 150 YEARS Glengariff Estate, one of Queensland’s most enduring family properties, has been purchased by local couple Kate and Brenden Beal. The sale marks a new chapter for a property that has helped shape the story of Kings Scrub and the wider Dayboro district for a century and a half. Kate and Brenden are no strangers to Glengariff. “We have attended several weddings at Glengariff over the past 10 years, including my best friend’s wedding there in 2015 where I was the maid of honour,” Kate says. “It feels like such a dream come true to now be part of the Glengariff story, a part where I get to share this unforgettable venue with a whole new generation of couples.” The 30-acre property, tucked into the rolling hills of Kings Scrub, has been part of the region’s fabric since the 1870s, when it

Such an exciting day, and a chance to catch up with friends that we haven’t seen for many years. And then the thrill of opening the envelopes. In our envelope were the following: Copy of the 2001 Schedules, the Liquor Licensing Permit so that we could have a bar at the show with the security requirements listed, a Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Society Inc Newsletter for May with lots of topics that are still very relevant to today’s show movement. These will be shared with the current show committee in due course, our raffle prize flyer, 2 nights for 2 people at the Gold Coast valued at $99, the results of the Woodchopping Competition, great to see that some of the competitors from 2001 are still competing today and have gone on to become Australian and World Champions, a couple of newspaper articles and three coloured photos of Miss Showgirl, the one and only Miss Alicia Bradley, now Brough, and a great one taken from the helicopter of the showgrounds and the surrounding Page 22 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 18 SEPTEMBER 2026
was first settled by Honorah Doyle, an Irish immigrant who arrived from a small village in County Cork in 1875. The matriarch built a working dairy farm from the ground up, remaining deeply hands-on with the property well into her later years, famously continuing to milk a herd of 40 cows by hand into her nineties. Over the following century, Glengariff evolved with the district around it. In more recent decades it became an award-winning wedding and events venue, drawing couples and guests from all over Australia and around the world, before closing its gates in 2021 amid the pressures of the COVID19 pandemic. The committee back then was President Errol Brough, sporting his moustache, Vice President Maurice Weston with his mo and beard, Secretary, yours truly, Treasurer Joy Weston and Committee Member Greg Easlea with his mo and beard. Some things never change! The winner of the Woodchopping 275mm Combination Queensland Championship in a time of 46.47 seconds was Danny Staib. It would appear that one of our locals, Steve Henderson competed in several events at the Show. Steve was one of our stewards who assisted with getting the timber to the show, setting up the arena and then removing the cut timber. Another name that stood out for me is C Cochran who was in the Veteran’s Standing Handicap I didn’t know Mr Cochran personally; however, I worked with his daughter Jodie at school tuckshop, and we often talked about her dad and his woodchopping knowledge. I have seen many of the choppers grow up, Mitch Argent and Jamie Head to name
was a genuine loss. “I know a few friends that always wanted to get married here, and when it closed down in 2021, they were devastated,” Brenden says. Now, with the sale to Kate and Brenden, the estate is poised to enter a new chapter. The couple have expressed their commitment to breathing new life into Glengariff while honouring the legacy left behind and are aiming to welcome their first couples back to the venue in September 2026. For residents of Dayboro and the surrounding districts, the sale represents more than a simple change of ownership, it is the continuation of a story that began 150 years ago and has endured through generations of Queensland history. Locals will no doubt be watching with interest as the Beal family sets about restoring and reimagining Glengariff Estate ahead of its September reopening. EVENTS & ACTIVITIES SAMFORD VALLEY STEINER INVITES COMMUNITY TO SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT PRESENTATIONS Samford Valley Steiner School invites the wider community to attend its 2026 Senior Research Project Presentations on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, from 8.15am to 3pm, for a unique opportunity to experience the creativity and dedication of its Class 12 students. An important part of Samford Steiner’s senior years program, the Senior Research Project (SRP) is a substantial undertaking completed alongside students’ regular curriculum studies. Over the course of a year, each student chooses a topic of personal significance and pursues it in depth, combining academic research with a practical or creative component. The process challenges students to work independently, manage a long-term project, and develop expertise in an area of genuine interest before presenting their findings to a public audience. This year’s projects reflect a diversity of interests, demonstrating what can happen when young people are given the time and support to follow their curiosity. Topics span engineering, entrepreneurship, psychology, environmental studies, archaeology, outdoor education, music, filmmaking, design and the performing arts. Students have explored questions as varied as the impact of social media on youth mental health, the role of nature in supporting wellbeing, human attachment and relationships, the connection between
people and animals and the ways music influences the brain. Others have undertaken substantial creative and practical projects, including writing novels and screenplays, composing original music, directing theatre productions, creating large-scale artworks, restoring motorbikes, designing a custom guitar and developing concepts for community spaces and events. For visitors, the presentations provide a rare window into the depth of thinking, creativity and perseverance that students can achieve through sustained independent inquiry. Each presentation represents the culmination of a year’s worth of planning, research, experimentation and problemsolving, as well as the courage to share personal discoveries and insights with a wider audience. The event offers an opportunity to hear directly from students about their learning journeys, the challenges they encountered and the outcomes they achieved. It is a celebration of academic achievement, creativity and the capacity of young people

SAMFORD LIVE GOES UP TEMPO We’re delighted to welcome back two of our most popular bands to round out our year. Book soon, these acts will sell out. Thursday 15 October - Seven of Ska The Seven of Ska (pictured) play a joyous repertoire of originals and hand-picked covers. Inspired by the greats of reggae their music draws on influences from soul, rock & roll, roots reggae, a touch of jazz, Latin and funk, all held together with the grooves of ska. Produced right here in Brisbane, The
Seven of Ska continue the tradition of combining ska with genres like soul and jazz to give a new, exciting sound using a classic line up. This highly proficient group features four horns, a rhythm section of bass and drums, and front man Emile Regano on guitar and vocals. And with a wonderful local twist, over half the band members have Samford connections, a combination of local residents, music teachers and a Samford Steiner graduate. This is a guaranteed recipe for a good night out as their fans confirm, “fantastic live band, energy, soul and rhythm wrapped in the joy of Ska, played by master musos”, and “great band, very entertaining and excellent musicians”.
Thursday 26 November Albi & The Wolves This touring New Zealand folk & Americana trio play music that is soul-filled, energetic, electric and beautiful. Albi & The Wolves create a huge sound using only acoustic guitar, electric violin, double bass, rich three-part vocal harmonies, and stomp. As a proud albino man with a big bushy white beard, Chris Dent (Albi) cuts a striking figure. His smooth, almost angelic voice and warm gentle demeanour, captures and holds his audience’s attention. On stage he is joined by his wolves, Pascal Roggen and Micheal Young. This pack come together with a massive sound to play everything from your soul-stirring ballads to your ear worming, foot stomping hoe downs. “This is folk that someone has tinkered with under the bonnet,” - The Hook, Ian Thomas.
