VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD Remembrance Day 2026 Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day, is observed across Commonwealth countries to honour those who died in the line of duty. It has been commemorated since the end of the First World War. At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of relentless warfare. This meant that allied forces had been successful in driving German invaders to defeat. The Germans called for an armistice (ceasefire) to negotiate a peace settlement and accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. About 70 million people had been mobilised in this first world conflict leaving the devastating impact of between 9 and 13 million deaths with about one third of the victims with no known grave. On the first anniversary of armistice in 1919, two-minutes’ silence was instituted in the commemorative ceremony at the cenotaph in London. The second anniversary held great significance when it also became a funeral with the return of the remains of an unknown soldier from the battlefields of the Western Front. Then in 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane formally declared 11 November as Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one-minutes’ silence.

After the Second World War the Australian and British governments called the commemoration ‘Remembrance Day’ rather than Armistice Day to remember all war dead. The Poppy is a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day because of the poem “In Flanders Field.” Ironically and symbolically, Poppies bloomed a brilliant blood red across some of the worst Battlefields of Flanders. Thank you to everyone for sharing your tasty and varied goodies for lunch. No celebration is complete without the celebration cake, which left us all forgetting about waistlines and what the scales say until another day. Pat and Bill, the youngest and oldest in the group, having their birthdays in November and February, had the honour of cutting the cake. Each attendee had the opportunity to tell their life’s journey and how, why and when they came to live in the beautiful Samford Valley. A lovely day of sharing good food, stories and memories. LOCAL NEWS WELLBEING PROGRAM GIVES LOCAL FAMILY CARERS VITAL SUPPORT A targeted wellbeing program has supported 46 unpaid family carers in the Samford region, helping them manage stress, strengthen resilience and connect with people facing similar challenges. The Carers Foundation delivered its Wellbeing from Within program with funding from Community Bank Samford. Through workshops, gentle movement, creative therapies and shared lunches, participants were encouraged to step away from the demands of caring and focus on their own physical and emotional health. Organisers said many carers arrived feeling exhausted, isolated and overwhelmed, but left with practical coping strategies, renewed energy and a stronger sense of belonging. The sessions also helped participants form friendships and informal support networks that could continue after the program ended. Joan Wilson-Jones said the results were evident in the changes participants experienced. “We know the programs offered by The Carers Foundation work,” she said. “We see carers arrive exhausted, often in tears, sharing stories of sleeplessness and feeling completely overwhelmed. We then see them leave smiling, feeling lighter, more energised and with a renewed commitment to their own self-care and wellbeing.” Participant comments reinforced that impact. Carers told organisers, “It’s the first time I’ve felt seen”, “I laughed today - I can’t remember when I last laughed”, and “Today was just what I needed to reset and lift my spirits.” Joan said her own experience had shown her why such support mattered. “As a former carer myself, I can personally attest to the need, importance and success of these programs,” she said. The Carers Foundation founder Ronnie Benbow thanked Community Bank Samford
for helping the organisation reach people who often put their own needs aside while caring for a family member. “We are incredibly grateful to Community Bank Samford for believing in our carers and making these programs possible,” she said. “Many family carers come to us completely exhausted, isolated and overwhelmed by the demands of caring for someone they love, often having neglected their own health for many years.” She said carers finished the program with less stress, better mental and emotional wellbeing, and reassurance that they were not alone. “The difference can be lifechanging - not only for the carer, but for the whole family who depends on them,” she said. Ronnie said local backing was particularly valuable because it allowed assistance to be offered early. “Community Bank Samford’s support enables us to reach carers before they reach crisis point and reminds these

SAMFORD PROGRESS UPDATES Citizen Science Project On 24 September, our birders carried out the latest quarterly bird survey of 2 woodland plots at QUT SERF in Camp Mountain, using the BirdLife, 2 hectares in 20 minutes protocol. We recorded 27 species in the first plot, including 3 new species: Rufous Fantail, Little (Rufous) Shrikethrush and Variegated Fairywren. We recorded 21 species in the second plot, with 1 new species: a flock of 14 Australasian Darters was circling overhead (a phenomenon that none of our birders had seen before). The only summer migrant recorded was Leaden Flycatcher, which was found in both plots. This citizen science project in collaboration with TERN has now been going for 5 years and to celebrate, we were joined on this survey by our team leader, Dr Katie Irvine from the University of Adelaide, who was in Brisbane for a conference. Dr Irvine said: “This long-term data set collected by the Eco-Corridor team will be very valuable to our researchers at TERN. We are extremely grateful to these citizen science volunteers”.

LOCAL NEWS THRIVING TOGETHER IN MENTAL HEALTH MONTH A recent survey by Mental Health Australia has found that an overwhelming 64% of Australians believe we are becoming increasingly disconnected from each other. This is despite knowing that connection and belonging have a positive impact on mental health. Mental Health Month takes place every October. This year’s theme, Together We Thrive, focuses on the power of shared connection, everyday kindness and community support. “People understand the importance of connection and community, yet many feel like we’re drifting further apart. That’s concerning, because connection is an important protective factor for our mental health and wellbeing,” Mental Health Australia CEO Carolyn Nikoloski said. “Right now, many people are navigating uncertainty, rising costs and constant change, which can leave us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. Yet our fundamental need to feel connected, safe, understood and valued hasn’t changed.”
She reminds us that small moments of care, kindness, conversation and connection can help strengthen belonging and support good mental health, whether it’s reaching out to a friend you haven’t seen in a while, joining a local group, chatting with your local barista or saying hello to a fellow dog walker, simple acts of connection can help foster belonging and community. Mental Health Australia has developed a
range of free resources, including wellbeing calendars, posters and other materials to encourage people to get involved throughout Mental Health Month. Several Mental Health Month ambassadors, including clinical psychologist and guest on The Imperfects podcast Dr Emily Musgrove, TV personality Myf Warhurst and performing artist Rob Mills, share personal messages encouraging people to prioritise connection and support one another. The survey also revealed that workplace settings were particularly challenging in terms of mental health transparency, with just 29% feeling comfortable telling their employer they were struggling with their mental health, compared with 67% who would feel comfortable telling friends. Together We Thrive is more than a theme. It’s a powerful reminder that strong connections are essential for good mental health, and that when people feel connected, included and supported, individuals, families and communities can thrive. www.mentalhealthaustralia.org.au
GREAT FINDS ARE KEEPERS AT THIS LOCAL SHOP Finders Keepers Gift Shop on Main Street has continually evolved since Brendan and Debbie opened it eight years ago and the owners admit with a smile that they are still unsure where it will go next. Samford locals for more than 10 years, they have enjoyed watching the village grow while retaining the friendly, close-knit character that makes it special. Asked what they value most about Samford, Brendan said: “It’s the people. Samford has a wonderful community spirit, and we have been incredibly lucky to get to know so many local people through the shop.” Brendan appreciates the way residents support local businesses, look out for one another and stop for a chat while exploring the village. That community spirit is reflected in Finders Keepers’ eclectic range. Customers can browse giftware, greeting cards, women’s clothing, dog apparel, candles, soaps, children’s toys and items for the “Old Guys Rule” brigade. The shop has expanded to include pre-loved goods, giving quality items a Page 6 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 16 OCTOBER 2026
second life, along with garden pots, water features, plants, and fresh and dried flowers for special occasions, or simply because someone deserves them. Then there is the homemade fudge. Its unusual flavours have become a talking point and, conveniently, provide Brendan and Debbie with an excuse to sample it while working. “Our business is unique because you never quite know what you’re going to find when you walk through the door,” Brendan said. “We’ve tried to create a shop that is interesting, fun and a little bit different.”
A customer might arrive for a birthday card and leave with a plant, something for the dog, a pre-loved treasure, flowers and fudge. After eight years, Brendan and Debbie are still having fun, rearranging the shop and wondering what they can possibly fit in next.

LOCAL NEWS Recycling: X-rays Recycling of X-rays is tricky in the City of Moreton Bay as the Council does not currently accept X-ray films for recycling. However, X-rays can be recycled through specialised recycling services. The silver is extracted for recycling, and the remaining residue used in materials for road construction. It is suggested that personal information be removed from X-rays before contacting the radiologist, hospital, medical or dental centre, or veterinary practice that took the X-ray, to see if they accept the old film for recycling. Failing this, X-rays can be placed in the general waste bin for disposal only (not the kerbside recycling bin). Wendy B
October is Queensland Seniors Month Seniors Month celebrates the contribution older adults make to our community. Mayor Peter Flannery said it was a great opportunity to take the time to connect with an older person and hear their story. For Moreton Bay volunteer Ian Hunter, getting older hasn’t meant stepping away from the community. Instead, he’s using decades of experience to connect with the next generation and share knowledge. As Queensland Seniors Month celebrates the contribution older people make to their communities, for Kumbartcho Sanctuary volunteer Ian, it’s about more than giving back. The 73-year-old has given his time to the sanctuary for three years and said he first discovered it when he and his wife visited the nursery looking for plants. “When we saw what they were doing and how they worked with young people and visitors, we thought, ‘Wow, that’s great.

Something I’d be interested in’,” Ian said. “I have great fun with the volunteers that are here, and I have great fun working with the older people, the young ones and their parents who visit.” A retired teacher of more than 35 years, Ian said volunteering had also given him an opportunity to continue using the skills he developed throughout his career. “The good thing about here is I’m still using some of those skills that I learned as an educator, working with others and connecting with them. One of the challenges of aging for some may be loneliness and losing your connections with other people. Being at Kumbartcho has taught me that taking small steps each day to stay connected with others and with nature is the best medicine.” City of Moreton Bay libraries and museums are helping seniors stay active through a range of workshops and classes designed to foster social connection and community participation. What are we doing for our best friends? In times of uncontrolled warfare, AI uncertainty, degraded biodiversity, climate change and many other human made challenges, well may we ask who our best friends are. After all, they have no say over it …. we are the ones to determine that. And what has sustainability got to do with pet care in any case? We in Samford are big on pets of all shapes and sizes. So we are huge purchasers of pet care products, from food to bedding to apparel and beyond. All these products consume energy in their production, transport and sale and food products have the added question about healthy ingredients. How do we decide which pet products are the most sustainable? Some pet care manufacturers let us know about the environmental credentials of their products, but producers simply need to be checked out – many will be authentic but some may be greenwashing us. AROUND THE VILLAGE DO YOU HAVE HAIRY WATER? Be Weed Aware: please don’t let this weed get into our waterways. An infestation of Hairy Water Hyssop (Bacopa lanigera), a popular aquarium plant, has been found in and around a dam in the Samford area and the property owners are aware of the problem. This species has recently been declared a category 3 and 5 weed, which means by law it must not be kept, sold, given away or released into the environment. In Queensland it was first found in Cedar Creek near Yugar. This plant has lots of fine white hairs on the stems and undersides of leaves and has small, fivepetalled blue to mauve flowers. If it gets into waterways, this South American native will spread rapidly to form dense mats, choking out native plants and reducing habitat for animals. If you find the weed on Council property, you can notify City of Moreton Bay using the ‘Snap, Send, Solve’ app. If you find it on your own property, you must take all reasonable and practical measures to remove it and minimise the biosecurity risk. If unsure what to do, contact the Council’s environment department. Ken Perkins Samford Landcare Pictured top right and below: An infestation of Hairy Water Hyssop in the Samford district. DID YOU KNOW? Samford Museum WHEN TIMBER RULED SAMFORD VALLEY It is easy to enjoy Samford Valley today for its shady roads, quiet bushland and green hills, but the valley once echoed with a very different sound: axes, saws, bullock bells and timber wagons creaking along rough tracks. From the 1860s, timber getting became an important part of local life, with cutters, teamsters and mill workers making a living from the magnificent trees that covered the district. In the early days, getting timber out of the hills was hard, patient work. Bullock teams hauled heavy logs from the lower slopes, often along muddy, winding tracks that tested both men and animals. Teamsters were up before daylight, calling in their bullocks and preparing for long days in the bush. One well-known local, Henry Cash, was said to yoke as many as 20 bullocks to a timber wagon. On a good morning, it might take half an hour to get the team ready; on a stubborn morning, much longer. The timber trade changed as the decades passed. By the 1920s and 1930s, trucks began to replace some of the old bullock work, and motorised winches helped drag logs from steeper country. Later came bulldozers and chainsaws, making the job faster but also changing the rhythm of the bush forever. Every cutter had his own way of keeping track of timber. Logs were marked with a
branding hammer, so ownership was clear. Cash used the initials “HC”, and many logs from the district found their way to Poultney’s Mill off South Pine Road. Licences were part of the business too: £2 a year for softwood and 10 shillings for hardwood. Names such as Henry Cash, Syd Davey, Charlie Patrick, Bill Dawson, Jim Paterson and Doug Smith are still remembered in connection with Samford’s timber days. Their work helped shape local roads, settlements and family stories, leaving traces that can still be imagined when travelling through the valley. Today, much of the remaining bush is valued for its beauty, wildlife and shade. That makes the timber era feel distant, yet it remains an important chapter in Samford’s story. The old timber getters worked hard, knew the country well and played their part in building the community we know today. Next time you pass beneath the trees, it

A Wonderful Start at Samford Playgroup Last term, we were lucky enough to welcome Deb, our local Queensland Children’s Rights Ambassador. Deb spent the morning sharing stories with the children and chatting with our families about the importance of children’s rights. She also generously provided us with some
wonderful resources to use during Children’s Rights Week. Children’s rights are about ensuring every child is safe, valued, respected and heard, with opportunities to learn, play, grow and participate in their community. We’re so grateful to Deb for taking the time to visit, share her knowledge and help us continue creating a welcoming and supportive space for our littlest community members. Term 4 has also kicked off with lots of fun at playgroup! After some exciting renovations, our families have been enjoying our refreshed layout, with lots of new little spaces inside for children to discover, explore and play. A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers and families who helped us pack up playgroup before the renovations and then came back to help reorganise and set everything up again. We are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful community willing to lend a hand. We truly couldn’t do it without you. Our friends got creative in week 1 making their own self-portraits using markers and paint. Self-portraits are a wonderful early childhood activity, encouraging children to notice their own unique features while developing their sense of identity and
belonging. They also support creativity, observation and fine motor skills as children explore how they see themselves. Of course, we have also been enjoying plenty of our favourite playgroup activities. Our floral-inspired playdough invited little hands to roll, squash, shape and create, while our colourful messy play provided plenty of opportunities for scooping, pouring, mixing and sensory exploration. It has been wonderful welcoming our families back and watching our little friends reconnect, explore and settle into another fun-filled term together. Make sure you follow the Samford Playgroup Facebook page for the latest updates, special events, activities and visiting guests. We have lots more fun to come.

MOSSES ARE THE BOSSES We humans owe our existence on Earth to mosses. That was one key take-away from our latest guest speaker, Brisbane botanist Andrew Franks. That’s because byrophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) were the first organisms to transition out of water onto land, more than 400 million years ago. Andrew’s presentation on the big, beautiful world of these tiny plants was both highly informative and visually wonderful. One just had to remember the photos were highly, highly magnified because
bryophytes are typically only millimetres in size, and their classification often requires a specialised microscope - and fieldwork on hands and knees. Worldwide, there are more than 12,000 moss species, up to 9000 liverwort species and just 200 or so hornworts. “Not everything called a moss is a bryophyte,” Andrew said. Definitely not lichens or algae! Byrophytes have used extraordinary features and adaptations to colonise every ecosystem on Earth, except salt water, from coastal mangroves to alpine peaks, from bright sunlight to dark caves.
Who’s looking over our shoulders? Big beautiful bryophtes smile down on NPQ Samford member Kevin Oliver and Brisbane’s moss whisperer, botanist Andrew Franks. (The bryophyte image is totally authentic - enlarged but not altered in any way.)
Mountain mosses, for example, create their own anti-freeze while desert byrophytes can withstand temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius, produce their own sunscreen, and survive years of desiccation until the next rainfall or heavy dew. Mosses are poikilohydric, i.e. totally dependent on their environment for hydration, and can dry out totally and re-hydrate without permanent damage. To do this, they effectively go into hibernation until moisture revives them to full life function, often in a matter of minutes. Even long-dead bryophytes can be unfurled for study by simply spraying with water. ‘Bryos’ (my term of endearment, not Andrew’s) have no vascular system, no wood (lignin) and no roots, but happily cling to a multitude of substrates, including wood, leather, rocks, walls, bricks and bitumen. One Scandinavian moss even specialises on reindeer dung. They have no flowers or seeds but reproduce in a variety of ways to ensure survival - sexually with spores, asexually, or even by producing special cells which can be splashed off their surface by water drops and start a new plant where they land. Andrew also highlighted how useful bryophytes are. For example, Sphagnum Moss in heating and horticulture, for insulation, and specialised Scotch Whisky production. Their antiseptic qualities saw them used as dressings for wounds in World War One, before antibiotics were discovered. They’ll always stay fascinatingly small and beautiful, Andrew said. “If you grow a moss lawn, you’ll never need to mow.” Alastair Silcock

AROUND THE VILLAGE Shine a Spotlight on Moreton Bay’s Community Champions Nominations are now open for the City of Moreton Bay’s 2027 Australia Day Awards, recognising the individuals who make a positive difference in City of Moreton Bay. The awards celebrate the volunteers, leaders, mentors and unsung heroes whose dedication makes City of Moreton Bay a stronger, more connected place to live. Anyone can nominate someone they believe deserves recognition for their contribution, with nominations closing 31 October. Mayor Peter Flannery said the awards recognise people who go above and beyond to support others and help create a stronger, more connected city. “Every community has individuals whose dedication, generosity and leadership make a lasting difference to the people around them,” Mayor Flannery said. “The Australia Day Awards are an opportunity to celebrate those contributions and shine a spotlight on the people who help make our Moreton Bay such a great place to live. From volunteers and advocates to mentors, fundraisers and local leaders,
these awards recognise the people who work tirelessly to support others and strengthen c o m m u n i t y connections.” There are two categories open for nomination: Citizen of the Year and the Mayor’s Community Spirit Award. “Whether someone has devoted many years to serving the community or has made an exceptional impact more recently, we encourage residents to nominate them,” he said. 2026 Citizen of the Year recipient Chris Paterson, whose charity employs people living with a disability or mental health challenge to clean up local waterways, said receiving the award was a surreal moment and that he was grateful to have his contribution recognised. “It’s good to have that acknowledgement that you’re on the right track, and people do appreciate the hard work and the volunteer hours that go into it,” Mr Paterson said.
2027 Awards Program Citizen of the Year: Recognises a local resident for their outstanding achievement and/or contribution to the community. The recipient must be an Australian citizen living in City of Moreton Bay. Mayor’s Community Spirit Award: Recognises individuals who have made a significant contribution to community life through service, leadership or community involvement. Recipients do not need to be Australian citizens or residents of City of Moreton Bay. For more information and to nominate, visit Council’s website.

QCWA Samford TALOFA LAVA GREETINGS! QCWA Samford Branch International Day was held on 24th September, celebrating Samoa and Strawberries. Strawberries are the QCWA Product of the Year and CWA Country Kitchens prepared some recipes using strawberries for morning tea. Members had fun guessing how many strawberries were in a bowl. Megan was the lucky winner of a huge bag of freshly picked delicious strawberries from our guest speaker, Nicky.
Our branch International Officer Marnie brewed a Koko Samoa, a traditional rich hot chocolate drink, the national beverage of Samoa. The flavour is strong, smoky and bittersweet, often compared to a mix of dark chocolate and coffee. Members enjoyed the taste testing. The ladies were treated to a Samoan knowledge quiz, which was entertaining, winning prizes for the correct answer. The day also had Lucky Door prizes, Raffles and

Lucky Dips. To end the special International Day, Marnie led a group of members to dance the ‘Siva’ - a Samoan traditional dance which is unique for storytelling, with expressive hand movements and a connection to the Samoan way of life. Nicky, a Commercial Beekeeper from Macbee Honey, Hives & Rescue presented on the day, speaking about her work as a Commercial Beekeeper, which involves managing more than 300 beehives that require constant monitoring. Nicky’s bees help significantly with the cultivation of berries at the Driscoll Farms. Members enjoyed listening to Nicky speak on how she is determined to protect bees, sharing her knowledge on their significance. Many thanks to Nicky. Other presenters for the morning were CWA members Tanya and Megan who spoke about their trip to Ottawa, Canada for the 31st Triennial World Conference in April this year, meeting members of the Associated Country Women of the World ACWW. The conference included inspiring speakers and the ladies came away with an increased knowledge of ACWW and how the organisation connects and supports rural women, focusing on health, education and sustainable farming across over 80 countries. After attending the Gala Dinner at the spectacular Canadian Museum of History, they continued on a tour of Canada and we enjoyed their slideshow. Thank you Tanya and Megan. Tiger Lawson Award: 3 Andy Wallace; 2 Ari Kumar; 1 Steve Donoghue. It was another cracking day of cricket in the 2026 Chronicle Cup, with the Mongrels and Dayboro going head-to-head. The Mongrels once again arrived with the usual handicap - not enough players to make up a full team, but, as always, they were more than happy to take the field and have a crack. Winning the toss, the Mongrels elected to bat first and got off to a shaky start, with Dayboro’s opening attack of Ophelia and Ben Winn keeping the scoring rate firmly under control. Ophelia bowled a fantastic opening spell, conceding just 16 runs from her five overs and picking up the first wicket of the day, finishing with impressive figures of 1/16 off 5 overs. At 1/12, things weren’t looking promising for the Mongrels, and it soon became 2/18. However, Andy Wallace and Ben Jordin had other ideas, settling in and beginning to rebuild the innings. Jordin eventually fell for a valuable 21 runs, bringing Sam Wallace to the crease to join his father. The Wallace combination kept pushing the scoreboard, with Andy eventually retiring after a superb 52. Arhith Kumar then joined Sam and continued where Andy left off, helping the Mongrels put together a very respectable total. By the end of their innings, the Mongrels had posted 179 runs, giving Dayboro a decent target to chase. With the Mongrels once again short on numbers in the field, Ben Jordin’s daughter
Adelina was called into action, patrolling the boundary and doing her bit to help the undermanned Mongrels cause. Dayboro got off to a flying start, with Simon and Connor putting together scores of 28 and 19 respectively before the Mongrels finally struck. There was a double breakthrough, with Andy Wallace and Darren Shaw picking up a wicket each to give the Mongrels some much-needed hope. Fraser then continued the scoring for Dayboro and looked to be putting the game firmly in their favour before producing one of the highlights of the day — a chance that was brilliantly taken by Andy Wallace, who threw himself into a superb diving catch. Wallace was having a day to remember, and he wasn’t finished yet, picking up another wicket shortly afterwards to give the Mongrels another sniff at an unlikely comeback. Unfortunately for the Mongrels, Steve Donahue had other ideas. Donahue steadied the Dayboro innings with a composed 35 runs, taking the pressure off and putting Dayboro firmly in the driver’s seat. Ben Winn then arrived at the crease and wasted little time, smashing a quickfire 26 runs to put the result beyond doubt and see Dayboro home. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES Sizzling Sausages and Smiles Over the recent big footy weekend, Brendale Evening VIEW Club members put on their biggest smiles, volunteering at the famous Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. The team enjoyed serving up sizzling sausages to so many hungry customers, while raising funds and supporting the community. It was a fun day filled with plenty of smiles, good company and, of course, lots of sausages. This fundraising event is a valued contribution towards our club’s support of nine Aussie children through their education in The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a valued part of The Smith family, helping to break the cycle of poverty through education. The Brendale Evening VIEW Club and The Smith Family are proud supporters of AntiPoverty Week, held from 11th-18th October. This year, members are calling on the community to recognise the often-hidden costs of education and the impact these costs can have on children’s participation and confidence in the classroom. Anti-Poverty week highlights the challenges faced by families experiencing disadvantage and encourages Australians to better understand poverty and work together to address it. Through fundraising, friendship and community involvement, Brendale Evening VIEW Club helps to make a difference, one child, one education and one opportunity at a time. Our VIEW Club is looking for new members to share fun and fundraising. We are a very friendly group of ladies always ready to welcome new members to join us. If you are unable to attend our dinner meeting, join us for our Coffee & Chat morning tea on the 1st Saturday of every month, from 10:00am at the Kitchen Cove, Geebung RSL. Contact Gwen: 0419 768 031. Save the Date: Monthly Dinner Meeting: 17th November, 6:30pm for 7:00pm start. Christmas event featuring the band, ‘Strung Out’. Aspley Hornets Football Club, 50 Graham Rd, Carseldine. Bookings one week before meeting. Contact Suzanne on 0417 022 996. Facebook: Brendale Evening VIEW Club. Barbara

BOOK REVIEWS GHOST CITIES Siang Lu Who doesn’t love a good satire, an unconventional poke at society’s past and present absurdities? Siang Lu, inspired by the almost vacant Chinese megacities built to boost GDP, created dual intertwining narratives; one a fable about a megalomaniac Emperor god who rules through irrational illogic with no care for consequence; the other a fictionalised, at times parallel, representation of modern reality. In Ancient China, Emperor Lu Huang Du, after the death of his father who choked on a chicken bone, orders all chickens in the country be beheaded. The economic repercussions and the effect on food supply to ordinary folk are disastrous. He kills commissioned artists for creating art that is too beautiful, men who look too much like him and anyone else who raises his dander,
BY JULIE MARTIN so that he is the only creation exalted. In the modern narrative, Xiang Lu, a monolinguistic second-generation ChineseAustralian translator, is fired from Sydney’s Chinese Consulate for using Google Translate to do his job. His experience goes viral as #BadChinese. “Baby Bao,” an autocratic, power-hungry filmmaker creating a 27-hour epic in Port Man Tou, an abandoned, real-world “ghost city” in China, recruits Xiang Lu to go to China to film the mega-saga of Emperor Lu Huang Du’s reign, using his notoriety. Baby Bao creates mistakes in the film, a boom mic visible in a scene, an iPhone taken out of a pocket in a tense historical shot. He thrives on “perfection of imperfection.” Through black humour, Siang Lu explores the difficulty many children of migrants encounter because society expects their linguistic and cultural presentation to match their face. “Yes, but where do you come from?” He questions the absurdity of ego-driven leadership and the reliability of written and media representations of history. He exposes the ridiculousness of notions of self-importance. Ghost Cities is a refreshing, thought-provoking and often hilariously funny must-read.
UNDER WATER Tracy Menon 20-year-old Marissa writes adjective-laden captions for photographs of vacation destinations she has never seen, for a travel magazine in Manhattan. The images remind her of her childhood on a research station on a “tiny, uninhabited island in the Andaman sea” off the coast of Thailand, where her father took her after the death of her mother, and her soul-friend, Thai British Arielle, whose parents run a mainland resort which predators flock to “in droves knowing
they can have a woman for a price.” The girls, “creatures of the sea”, can identify individual manta rays from afar. They see the gradual degradation of the sea habitat by over-tourism, greedy fisherman, and climate change. We watched bright corals dim before our eyes. It was like watching a technicolor film fade to black and white. Every day, the reef turned whiter and whiter. Every day, there were fewer and fewer fish. […] There was no way to convince people that these gorgeous ghostly castles illuminated by the blue-green light of the ocean were a signal that the world was ending. Everything changes on Dec. 26, 2004, when the Indian Ocean tsunami wreaks destruction, killing Arielle. Seven years later, grief-stricken, physically scarred and traumatised, Marissa leaves her home’s ghost inhabited shores for New York. She drifts through life, incapable of escaping her haunts, or imagining a future without the ghost of Arielle she carries within. When the might of Sandy heads for New York in 2012. Marissa must face her enduring trauma. Menon’s debut novel alternates between the times before the unexpected horror of the tsunami and the days leading up to Sandy, when New Yorkers had time to prepare. The description of the tsunami is gut-wrenching but the work’s exploration of friendship, loss and the enduring, ephemeral beauty of memories is uplifting. This complex work refuses to avoid the hard questions, offering no easy answers as it tenderly, yet deliberately cuts deep into Marissa’s grief. This is a remarkable debut novel, well-worth the read. Baffies Oan has it.
