SAMFORD STATE SCHOOL CELEBRATES MUMS Samford State School P and C honoured Mums with a lovely Mother’s Day breakfast last Friday morning. The choir’s heartfelt rendition of “How Sweet it is to be Loved by You’ warmed everyone’s hearts.

A special shout out goes to resident OSHC artist Immy, who outdid herself with her lovely hand-designed photo backdrop, and to Tara whose organisational skills have earned her superhero status, as well as to the tuck shop legends.

There were so many excited children and happy mums, so we asked some of the children what they loved about their mums. Pictured (top right) is Jodie with her children Violet and Jasper who said: “She is simply the best Mum ever, and that includes her hugs.”

Pictured (bottom right) is James with his mum Lizanne, and Pheobe with Hugo. They enjoyed the morning with James telling us: “I love mum’s cooking and her kindness.”

The next school event will take place on May 24 when the P and C will host the Long Lunch alongside Alfresco catering. This event has been running for a few years and has become a slick and stylish operation with immaculate aesthetics, gourmet food and live music on the oval.

Recycling Household Batteries

Established in 1989, National Volunteer Week is the premier celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia and provides an opportunity to say thank you to the millions of Australians who volunteer. The purpose of the week is to highlight the crucial role volunteers play in our communities and to encourage new individuals to experience the rewards of volunteering.

The 2026 theme is Your Year to Volunteer, aiming to honour the contributions of volunteers, inviting people across Australia to make 2026 a year of meaningful involvement, in ways that work for them.

2026 is the United Nations International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026), recognising the vital role volunteers play in building sustainable, inclusive communities worldwide.

National Volunteer Week 2026 supports IVY 2026 by amplifying the voices of volunteers, celebrating their contributions, and encouraging action to help volunteering thrive across Australia.

There are so many amazing local community groups who are very keen for more volunteers to keep them operating.

Rechargeable AA and AAA batteries offer an economical alternative to standard household batteries. They are quick and easy to recharge using a small, inexpensive battery charger available readily from supermarkets.

However, all household batteries (even rechargeable ones) have a limited life.

They are hazardous items which cannot be placed in household or recycling wheelie bins. When used batteries get tossed in these bins, they create a fire hazard and can end up in landfill where they leak toxic materials into waterways.

The City of Moreton Bay reported in January 2026 that they are averaging 12 battery-related fires a month, putting our local waste trucks and drivers at significant risk!

The safest thing to do with used household batteries is to tape the terminals with clear sticky tape before dropping them off for recycling. This prevents the battery terminals from touching, sparking and catching fire.

Store taped batteries in a glass container, making sure the container is not airtight as pressure can build up. (Batteries should not be stored in a metal container, or with metal objects due to fire risk.) Keep the batteries in a cool, dry place away from heat sources like stoves. Take particular care to keep batteries away from children, especially small batteries (like button batteries) that can be swallowed.

Taped household batteries can then be dropped off for recycling at: • Drakes Samford (right side of entry door) • Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and Bunnings stores • any of City of Moreton Bay’s waste facilities.

LOCAL NEWS Hidden Populations of Endangered Glider Species Found in Moreton Bay Southern Greater Glider distribution in City of Moreton Bay is greater than initially thought, with the endangered species detected at multiple new locations. The known range of the nocturnal marsupial – nicknamed the flying koala due to its fluffy appearance and diet of eucalyptus leaves – has grown from one known site at Sheep Station Creek Conservation Park, Upper Caboolture in 2023 to 11 locations across the City.

Two detection dogs helped uncover the hidden populations over the past three years as part of a Council conservation project.

Despite their large ears and long fluffy tails, the Southern Greater Glider is one of Australia’s most elusive animals, as they hide out in large eucalyptus trees with wellformed hollows during the day and make no audible noise.

The detection dogs sniffed out scats, or faeces, from the Southern Greater Glider with DNA analysis confirming the presence of the species at 10 locations across Cedar Creek, Cashmere, Moorina, Bunya, Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said this was a significant development given the species’ endangered status.

“Our conservation project has shown that City of Moreton Bay is home to a much larger population of Southern Greater Gliders than previously known,” he said. “We thought it didn’t make sense that Southern Greater Gliders would only be living at Sheep Station Creek Conservation Park given the

amount of suitable habitat in our City, and we’ve been incredibly pleased to discover so many places where the marsupial has been hiding out. The substantial presence of this endangered species is yet another example of the exceptionally rich biodiversity that exists in our City.”

Detection dog surveys were undertaken at 40 Council-owned reserves and various Land for Wildlife Properties by a combination of Council’s Environmental Services team and the National Environmental Science Program. German Shepherd Ada and English Springer Spaniel Stanley took it in turns to visit the survey sites where they would search for greater glider scats.

Their handler, animal trainer Nicky Wright, said both dogs were raised and trained to detect greater glider scats, with Ada also trained on koala scats.

“We would try to use fire trails and tracks to walk on and send the dog off; when they find a scat they demonstrate a change in behaviour and then present their find,”

she explained.

“Ada sometimes found koala scats, which look very different to that of a greater glider.

On some sites we found so many greater glider scats there was no longer the need to keep looking!”

Council officers collected the scats, which were sent off for DNA analysis to confirm their origin.

As part of ongoing efforts to locate further Southern Greater Glider populations, Council will soon conduct thermal drone searches at reserves with inaccessible terrain following a successful trial at Sheep Station Creek Conservation Park.

Council has been distributing flyers to residents to see if they can find Southern Greater Gliders on their properties as regular torches can be used to spot their distinctive, reflective golden eye shine.

LOCAL NEWS RiverWatch O n 7 M a y, our RiverWatch volunteers, led by coordinator Courtney Damen and PRCA’s Lou Klatte, carried out a 6-monthly comprehensive survey of the South Pine River at the Eco-Corridor and at Showgrounds Drive, Highvale. This involved measuring water quality with a hand-held meter, taking water samples for more detailed laboratory analysis, making a general environmental assessment and collecting invertebrates from the riffles, pools and under the bank.

A quick scan of the net before bottling the invertebrate samples at the Eco-Corridor revealed dragonfly and damselfly larvae and several freshwater prawns. Community Bank Samford sponsors this PRCA-run project.

Bushcare Our next Council-assisted bushcare working bee will be from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 17 May, which is a week later than usual to avoid Mother’s Day. Depending on soil moisture levels, we hope to be planting border and understorey plants as well as continuing our vital weeding across the site,

CAM’S CORNER What’s Happening to Your New Pasture?

It’s Being Eaten Over the past few months, I’ve had a growing number of calls from local landholders whose pasture struck well, then disappeared within weeks. If pasture never emerges, that’s usually an establishment issue - soil, moisture, seed quality, temperature or seed-to-soil contact.

But if it comes up well and then fades out, the cause is usually different. In many cases, the pasture didn’t fail to grow. It failed to survive.

Once seedlings are up, the equation changes. Survival depends on two things - follow-up moisture and grazing pressure.

You can’t control the rain. You can manage the grazing.

The critical window is the first two to three weeks after emergence. At that stage, a grass seedling has minimal roots, limited energy reserves and very little ability to recover. In practical terms, it’s a leaf on a thread. Remove the leaf, and the plant is gone.

Now consider what’s happening on the ground.

During the day, Australian Wood Ducks graze actively across new pasture, often in surprising numbers. At dusk, wallabies move in from surrounding bushland. Overnight, hares continue grazing at ground level.

The result is a near 24-hour grazing cycle with very little recovery time. Under that pressure, seedlings can be removed faster than they can grow - sometimes within days.

We’re outside the main tropical pasture establishment window now, but it’s still prime time for winter feed species like ryegrass, oats and legumes. Those young seedlings are equally vulnerable.

Wood Ducks move in from the dam and graze the paddock heavily, stopping at the bushland gully.

Note the over-grazing and visible droppings.

On our own property, we recently lost an entire newly established lucerne, chicory and turnip crop. The strike was excellent within two weeks it was completely wiped out by grazing wildlife.

Agronomist Anthony Buchanan from Nutrien notes that Wood Ducks can be a serious problem in small crops, lucerne and newly sown pastures, sometimes wiping out paddocks within days.

So what should you do differently?

First, recognise the risk. Properties with dams, open paddocks, nearby bushland and limited surrounding agriculture generally attract higher grazing pressure.

Second, protect pasture at emergence not after damage appears. By the time bare patches show, the damage is done.

Regular disturbance - vehicle movement, dogs, human activity or livestock nearby can help. Ducks strongly prefer quiet, open areas where they feel safe.

On higher-pressure sites, structured deterrents may be worthwhile. Laser deterrents are emerging as one of the more promising options in Australian trials and field use. GrassForce is currently trialling

them locally with Bird Control Australia, including on our own property. Results vary between properties, and what works well on one block may not on another.

The takeaway is simple. If pasture or winter feed strikes well and then disappears, don’t just blame the seed or the soil. In many cases, something is eating it.

LOCAL NEWS MAKERS ON MAIN: A Beloved Creative Hub - Now Looking for its Next Custodian.

A little over seven years ago, in January 2019, four creative ladies decided to band together to create a permanent space to showcase our creations as an alternative to attending markets. We started small and slowly introduced a selection of locally handmade products to add to our range.

I don’t think any of us imagined that the Makers On Main space would become the amazing creative hub that it has. We’ve been overwhelmed by the community support.

Since then we’ve had the privilege of representing over 40 local and Brisbane based artists and makers, and what we’ve created has become part of the Samford community - a go to for beautiful gifts and homewares.

We have loved creating this beautiful space, but as life changes, it’s time to move on and let someone else with a passion for handmade take the reins. So, we are offering our little business for sale.

Ideally, we would love for the shop to continue in the same manner, stocking quality handmade creations and supporting the local handmade community. We have casual agreements with our family of creatives who would love to continue stocking with Makers On Main. As an established business, this is a great opportunity. SORRY DAY COMMEMORATION The Teralba Park Stolen Generation Support Group invites local Indigenous and non-indigenous community members to join with us on Tuesday 26 May at 7am to remember the ‘Stolen Generations’. At a dawn service we honour lived experiences and acknowledge the ongoing impacts of forced removal as we reflect on our shared history. All are welcome.

The 26th May is National Sorry Day. It began in 1998 in response to the National Bringing Them Home Report. The report recommended there should be ‘an official acknowledgement of, and apology for, the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’.

In that year, a small community group came together to work towards building a commemorative site at Teralba Park, in Everton Park. ‘Teralba’ is aboriginal for tall trees and it has a special significance to the Stolen Generations story, being near the site of the former Enoggera Boys Home (19061978), where many children were taken to after being removed from their families.

From those early beginnings, the commemorative service has grown until now we see hundreds in attendance including Stolen Generation survivors and their families, local schools and their choirs, politicians, church people and a range of different community members We ask you to arrive at 6.50am for a 7pm start. A welcome to country and smoking ceremony will begin proceedings, followed

by guest speakers. The ceremony includes prayer, song, the lighting of candles, the laying of flowers and sharing of experiences.

A highlight this year will be renowned Gunditjmara/Kokatha Songman, Dave Arden singing with the Marist Chamber Choir.

You are invited to join us for breakfast following the service.

VOLUNTEERS PRESERVE HISTORY Interest in preserving the local history of Samford and its surrounds can be traced to the lead-up to Australia’s 1970 bicentenary of Captain Cook’s landing.

Over the past four decades, through the combined efforts of dedicated volunteers, local businesses, community organisations and the wider Samford community, the Museum has grown into a significant precinct of relocated and purpose-built buildings. It houses an extensive collection of artefacts, curated exhibits and resource materials focused on life in Samford before 1960.

The United Nations has declared 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development. Meanwhile, Queensland is celebrating Volunteers Week with the theme “Your Year to Volunteer.”

The Samford Museum offers a mix of volunteer opportunities and roles that draw on a wide range of skills and qualities.

Volunteers support educational sessions for

local school children and contribute trade and technical expertise, communication skills, visitor services, collections support and event assistance throughout the year.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Parklands parkrun Samford Parklands parkrun has been running - or jogging - or walking - or volunteering - since September 2024, and is now a well-established weekly event attended by many locals and visitors from near and far. parkrun is a free and friendly weekly 5km community event where participants can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or spectate. The event starts at 7am every Saturday, with a briefing held at 6.50am on the grassy knoll near the Samford Bowls Club.

All parkrun events are organised by volunteers. if you are interested in volunteering as a once-off, once a month, or every week, email us samfordparklands@ parkrun.com.

Since parkrun started in Samford Valley, we have held over 80 events, attracting close to 14,000 participants.

Samford Parklands parkrun has several themed events during the year to encourage fun and participation. These include a seasonal Pace Week, where volunteers encourage other participants to pace themselves against an experienced runner or walker to achieve a set time.

Other themed events have included Junior Takeover, where volunteers were under 18 years of age, and Senior Takeover, which featured volunteers from the 60+ bracket.

We also make a point of holding a Tutu parkrun - a parkrun tradition whenever the event falls on the 22nd of the month.

Another popular themed event introduced in 2025 is Police Parkie. It will return this year on Saturday 23 May, as part of National Road Safety Week, which is held from 17–24

TGIF

May. This year, the Queensland Government is the official host of this event, and Saturday 23 May has the theme of Drive safely on Regional, Country, Rural, and Remote Roads.

Samford Parklands parkrun will be hosting the Queensland Police Service (QPS), with officers from the bike squad, a highway patrol motorbike, crime prevention officers, and local police. There will also be officers from Transport & Main Roads attending with information about road safety.

The QPS bike squad officers will lead out the front-runners, and officers will have their LIDAR speed detection devices out to record the speeds of the parkrun participants. This was a highlight for many participants - big kids and little kids - last year.

Time flies and it is hard to believe that we are already putting a call out for the May Thank Goodness it’s Friday. We have been very excited to see so much enthusiasm from the community for this monthly event. Thank you to everyone who has become a regular, and it is always great to see new people continually joining us.

The live music has been incredibly popular, and we are grateful to have so many talented people generously donating their time to entertain the community.

We have also been amazed by how many people have been hiring the hall. There is a diverse range of activities taking place, with many ongoing hirers, along with one off events, including another wedding and a variety of other special occasions.

Come along and join us for the next Thank Goodness it’s Friday community BBQ on Friday 29th May. This event is made possible through the dedication of the committee and volunteers, with funds raised helping support the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the hall for the benefit of the community.

TGIF BBQ kicks off at 5.30pm, with food available until 7.30pm, or until sold out.

BYO nibbles and your favourite sundowner. Camp chairs and picnic rugs welcome.

Live music continues until 8.30pm, so don’t rush off - stay and enjoy the evening.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Rural Fire Brigade ANZAC DAY It was a spectacular sunrise to welcome the public on Anzac Day. A contingent of our members attended the service which was of special significance as the main address was presented by Mark Orreal who is a member of our Brigade. Mark made an exceptional speech reflecting on the past. He gave us the message of respect for all and how everyone can contribute to a peaceful future within the country, community and with ourselves and families – kindness, courage, unity.

Lifeblood On Friday 1 May, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood launched their 2026 Emergency Services Blood Drive. Queensland Fire Department along with other emergency services aim to donate as much blood and plasma as possible between 1 May and 31 July. RFSQ and QFR crews were on hand to support the cause. Our members Ed and Colin rolled up their sleeves to donate. Each donation can save three lives.

The installer of the acoustic tiling believes that we will be amazed at the difference in the noise level in the clubhouse now they have been installed.

We are awaiting the ‘Elvis and Legends’ evening on 29 May to test them out. Don’t forget to get your ticket to this one night only event at the Club. It is so good to see so many members and visitors enjoying the wonderful Autumn weather on the green. The Club is averaging 25-30 players on each social bowling day, Wednesday and Saturday. We saw 36 players signed up to take part in the annual ‘Shirts and Skirts’ day on ANZAC Day. This event was proudly sponsored by Anton Brown Funerals. The day began with a short but respectful and reflective ANZAC ceremony then followed by an afternoon of bowling.

The light showers early in the afternoon didn’t dampen the players’ spirit. Once again the ‘Shirts’ came out on top with a 4-2 win. Better luck next year ladies.

The Club’s broader acres will be looking sleek with our new ride on mower. The mowing volunteers are all anxiously waiting their turn to use the Cub Cadet Zero Turn with a 60 inch cut so it will take less time for them to do the job. This new mower

Samford Area Mens Shed Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Glen His heritage has been directly traced back to pure Viking stock. But you wouldn’t guess it. Coming from the longest line of farmers any of us has ever heard of, his family’s farm was dead flat with a bunch of dead trees, and at the age of three he was lined up for butting practice by a feisty lamb twice his size, every time he emerged from the house. Hardly Viking material.

Needing glasses as a teenager, meant it was hard to play the many team sports that he enjoyed so much, as he couldn’t focus that well, once again throwing doubt on the Viking bloodline. Yet 48 years later he’s still playing competitive volleyball, albeit on sand floors.

He recalls an episode from year 12 boarding school, where he attempted a 1¾ trampoline somersault, the closest he came to making his Viking ancestors proud. The 3 mangled vertebrae, 5 weeks in traction and 2 months in a neck brace weren’t quite enough to stop him playing sport again by

the end of the year, though.

Meeting his lovely future wife at university – where she made him look second rate at volleyball (she still does) – was the best thing that happened to him. Then the next best thing was snagging an engineering job at Ford in Melbourne, which grew into a fulfilling career in design and manufacture within other diverse companies.

On the less active, more cerebral, side, Glen says he really enjoys creating things, a trait passed on from his dad whom he’d often watch and occasionally “help”. And at SAMS, he’s an integral part of the Art Group, channelling his enthusiasm and love of the outdoors through watercolours and acrylics. One of his goals is to kickstart a woodcarving cluster, if he can find the time between fishing, volleyball and surf skiing of course. Incidentally, look out for him and some of his work, should you visit the Samford & Hinterland Arts Trail, in June.

As a self-confessed tinkerer, able to solve tall problems in a single bound using the tried and true practical method, he reckons that if he can’t see it and can’t feel it, then it just isn’t real. And if it involves the slightest bit of electronics, especially the type that’s inside a black box, “Then it’s utter voodoo,” he reckons. “And we Vikings don’t do voodoo.”

QCWA Samford At the ANZAC Day service held at Samford’s Avenue of Honour, our President Lilah lay a wreath on our behalf to commemorate, honour and remember the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand men and women who served and are serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), ‘Women Walk the World’ event is held at the end of April every year and Samford CWA members participated in a number of ways. Members and friends walked the Avenue of Honour on Sunday 26th April with Samford District RSL President Mr Mark Orreal who gave a presentation on the Samford Monuments development along the Avenue. Many thanks to Mark for a captivating and detailed talk.

Our appreciation also goes to Samford RSL.

CWA members Tanya and Megan walked in Lanark County, known as the Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario, a scenic region in Eastern Ontario near Ottawa, as part of the ACWW 31st Triennial World Conference. This area is famous for its Maple Syrup production, particularly in March and April where events like Taffy on Snow - hot boiled maple syrup is poured onto fresh snow to create a soft, chewy treat - is held. This symbolises the start of the Maple Syrup season.

A fun and creative Craft Extravaganza will be held at our CWA Hall in Main Street, Samford on Thursday 28th May from 9am to 1pm. For more than 25 years Samford Anglican Church has conducted an ANZAC Day Sunrise Service at Jolly’s Lookout. The

service started at 6am and as the service progressed the sun appeared. Although chilly and some drizzle on the mountain, a respectful crowd gathered to give thanks and to contemplate the service of many Australians and New Zealanders who have served and serve their countries.

We were honoured that a number of returned service people read prayers of thanks and for peace. We thanked those who served in the many past wars and campaigns as well as those who took part in peace keeping operations. Many returned personnel and family members wore medals.

This year, 13 year old Ben JacksonAndrews played the Last Post and Reveille on his trumpet. We trust that Ben will be able to join us for many years to come.

After the service Rev Robert then returned to Samford to take part in the ANZAC Day proceedings in the Village.

In the church calendar, we celebrate Pentecost or Whitsunday late in May. Pentecost occurs 50 days after Easter. After

the death and resurrection, Jesus appears to people and reassures them that the Holy Spirit will empower them to be witnesses throughout the world - everywhere and eventually to everyone (Acts 1:8).

Pentecost is the beginning of international effort to include everyone, Jewish and nonJewish, into God’s family. It is the birthday of the church as the Holy Spirit represented by tongues of flames, empowers Christians to live and love as Christ did. Though we are human with human failings and emotions we long to live as Christ would have us and to feel the love of God deep within us.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Wild Discoveries: Citizen Scientists find rare plants in Moreton Bay Sharp-eyed nature enthusiasts are uncovering rare and invasive plant species, with their discoveries playing an important role in protecting City of Moreton Bay’s natural environment. They’ve been uploading photos of their observations on the community-driven app iNaturalist, which suggests identifications and creates research data for scientists, researchers and other users to support conservation efforts.

Among the discoveries is the highly invasive Tropical Soda Apple, which was detected by a local contractor who uploaded a photo of the weed to the app. Citizen scientists have also uncovered some rare plant species, with their recordings providing important datapoints for conservationists.

Recordings on iNaturalist help paint a clearer picture of the rich biodiversity in Moreton Bay. Mayor Flannery said one of the most important recordings to date was the Tropical Soda Apple, which poses a major threat to other plant species and livestock.

“The sharp prickles on this weed can

injure people and animals, and the plant can become so dense that it prevents livestock from accessing shade and water, not to mention that it can displace native plants and host plant viruses,” he said.

Another important plant discovery has been the threatened Birdwing Butterfly Vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa), a rare vine species and essential host plant for the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, the largest sub-tropical butterfly in Australia.

Citizen scientists in City of Moreton Bay have also recorded the Scrub Turpentine (Rhodamnia rubescens), which is listed as critically endangered. Once common in rainforests, this species has been severely impacted by invasive myrtle rust fungus, meaning every healthy tree documented supports conservation efforts.

Also on the list of special finds is the

Bush Sophora (Sophora fraseri), a shrub often mistaken for the weed Easter cassia – a confusion that may have contributed to its decline in Queensland.

Recordings on iNaturalist show the City’s local bushland is alive with a variety of wild macadamias and an incredible array of native orchids, from the bold Large Tongue Orchid to delicate Fairy Lantern Orchids.

Bush and land care groups have dedicated pages on iNaturalist, with the public able to view maps of their extensive observations.

Roars, Relaxation and Special Moments From roaring dinosaurs and thoughtful Mother’s Day activities to calming yoga adventures for Mindful May, it has been a busy and exciting few weeks at Samford Playgroup.

Our little learners loved stepping back in time during our dinosaur-themed activities.

The children became mini palaeontologists, carefully digging up dinosaur bones made from salt dough and brushing them clean with paintbrushes. There was plenty of excitement as friends squashed and squished green dinosaur playdough using special rollers to make fossil and footprint impressions. The creativity continued with dinosaur collage and craft activities, where children explored different textures, colours and materials to create their own prehistoric masterpieces. These kinds of sensory and imaginative play experiences are such an important way for young children to learn through exploration and hands-on discovery.

We also enjoyed celebrating the special people in our lives with a range of Mother’s Day-inspired activities. Children painted handprint flowers for their mums and grandmas, created beautiful drawings of their loved ones, and explored rose-scented playdough decorated with sparkly hearts. It was lovely to see the pride on the children’s faces as they created meaningful keepsakes to take home.

A very special congratulations to the lucky winner of our Mother’s Day Retreat giveaway. Thank you to everyone who nominated a deserving mum in our

London, 28 December 1950 - Brisbane, 23 April 2026 If you can remember a grey 4 door MG-Y 1967 with a slim, snappy dressed driver - that was my Barbara. Sorry to say cancer got her and, within 6 months, life was getting too hard and she decided on a voluntary ending.

Back to the beginning

Both of us were looking. Sheer luck brought me to the amateur stage performing musicals with the Ignatian. I was told “You are a bass - if you want to join us sit with the basses.”, rehearsing for Show Boat. What a fun group - young, from all walks of life, but all with the same hobby: singing, laughing and sometimes making a fool of yourself and getting away with it.

Barby was there and our eyes met a few times. I thought she was far too young looking?!

This, my first show, was a ripper and I signed up for the next - Pirates of Penzance. To my delight, Barby was there and more eye contact! Perhaps I am shy but my engineering brain and fate had a plan! In Act 3, the pirates hiding behind rocks can pick a maiden while they enter the stage for their beach walk. If I pick a rock in the middle and be fast, I can beat any of the tenors. It worked. I got her and bellowing the bass’s notes and words. The tenors sing melody and different words, I put them off. Then the director points the finger at me “You should be over there”. So I got an alto partner. At tea break I go to Barby to apologise. “Oh” she said, “that is quite all right.” The rest is history.

We did 12 shows together, she was only 10 years younger and, most importantly, our star signs were compatible. It worked for us - we got married and she joined me whole heartedly in my world of fun like car rallies, German club, flying, and dancing to Trad Jazz. The fun we had each 12 months for 45 years of marriage is more than some couples have in a lifetime.

MYRTLE RUST Botanical Enemy No 1 In just a few years, Myrtle Rust could drive more Australian tree species to extinction than the past 240 years of human modification.

That was Professor Rod Fensham’s dire warning during his presentation at last week’s meeting, although there are some green shoots of hope with rescue projects underway. Prof Fensham said 17 rainforest tree species face extinction before they have a chance to develop tolerance to the disease, which ‘came across the Pacific’ in 2010. He likened Myrtle Rust to the human coronavirus Covid 19, in that it appears to have mutated from a wild strain in South America before ‘hitching a ride in our modern world of globalised economies and travel’.

Prof Fensham described Australia as super-rich in Myrtaceae species, the family most susceptible to Myrtle Rust, with ‘heaps of potential hosts naive to the disease’. Eucalypt species are seemingly ‘doing okay’, he said, but three genera Gossia, Rhodamnia and Lenwebbia - are particularly affected in Queensland, with

the state’s south-east providing perfect climatic conditions for Myrtle Rust.

The rust can’t survive North Queensland’s long dry season or inland areas, so a number of projects are aiming to propagate generations of the threatened species in suitable areas and conditions, where they might develop resistance for later re-introduction to their former environments.

“The point is we don’t want species to go extinct,” Prof Fensham said.

Research botanists believe only 12 plant species have disappeared from the

Australian landscape since 1788, so with 17 species at immediate risk and a further 19 in serious decline, Myrtle Rust represents a huge challenge to native plants and their dependent ecosystems.

In an unrelated matter, Prof Fensham said his Guide to Brisbane Eucalypts has now sold out its first 3000 print run, but a reprint is due out later this year. This was welcome news to various attendees, especially Australian Native Plants Society eucalyptus study group membership officer Sheryl Backhouse.

Prof Fensham flew to Melbourne the following day where his co-authored Guide to Melbourne Euclaypts is being launched this week.

AROUND THE VILLAGE DIVISION 11 UPDATE Over the past few weeks I have enjoyed spending time out and about meeting with a range of local community groups. It is always invaluable to hear directly from the people who are doing so much behind the scenes to support our community.

Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a “communi-tea” gathering with the new River North Community Foundation, bringing together local groups to share the work they are doing and to connect with one another. While there was a shared concern that volunteering is declining and that the load is increasingly falling on fewer shoulders, the breadth and energy of those in the room was a clear reminder of how fortunate we are to have such a vibrant and active community here in Samford. If you’re at a loose end, I’m happy to point you in the direction of half a dozen or more wonderful organisation to get involved with.

I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful ANZAC Day commemorations held across the district this year. My sincere thanks to the Samford RSL branch, the Samford Historical Museum and the local horse riders for their efforts in creating such meaningful and respectful services. It was

an honour to lay a wreath on behalf of the City of Moreton Bay and to stand alongside past and present servicemen and women as we paid our respects.

You may have noticed work is progressing visibly at the Village Green. It is exciting to see this project begin to take shape. In addition, on-street parking works adjacent to the CWA have now been completed, improving access in the village.

I am also pleased to share that the Samford dog off-leash park has been completed ahead of schedule.

Looking ahead, a free Council-contracted community event will be held at Roderick A.

Cruice Park in Dayboro from 2pm to 6pm on 23 May. “Groovin’ in the Green – Harvest Jam” is shaping up to be a relaxed afternoon of music and community connection. I encourage you to come along and enjoy the festivities.

LOCAL PLANTS

MINT BUSH There are about 90 species of mint bushes (genus Prosanthera) indigenous to Australia. About 80% of these have very aromatic leaves, with oil of cineole being the major component, as do a number of culinary herbs such as mint, thyme, oregano and sage to which they are related. Oil from the leaves of some species is distilled for use in cosmetics and soaps. In the wild, natural hybrids occur between several species whilst most species are believed to hybridise in cultivation. This ability has caused some difficulties in classification.

The leaves of mint bushes are simple and opposite but the shape in different species is variable – ranging from thinly lanceolate to broadly ovate or circular. The apex of some is rounded. In others it is pointed.

The leaf margins of different species may be smooth, wavy or toothed.

The leaf colour ranges from mid to dark

green, but some species have leaves whose lower surfaces are paler than the upper surfaces or covered with hairs or glands.

Whilst the different species vary in flower colour, the flower structure for this genus is unique – the five sepals (basal whorl of the flower) are fused into two lips. The petals vary in size. In spring, the flowers, which are formed in leaf axils, make a spectacular display.

Mint bushes grow best in loamy, welldrained soil in dappled shade. They tolerate light frosts and will grow in subtropical to cool temperate climates. New plants should be watered weekly or when the plants begin to droop, until established. Over watering can cause root rot and fungal infestations.

Since they are not very sensitive to phosphorus, prosantheras respond well to annual fertilising after flowering. Wilting of the plants during dry periods can be rectified with mulching and watering.

Growing mint bushes as border plants near pathways will release their exotic aromas when brushed against. They make a beautiful feature specimen, as well as being fast growing, effective screens or windbreaks or in erosion control. Whilst playground friendly, they are significant habitat plants, attracting bees, butterflies and other insects.

Three species that grow well locally are the Round-leafed Mint Bush (Prosanthera rotundifolia), the Spiked Mint Bush (Prosanthera phylicifolia) and Oval-leafed, or Mountain Mint Bush (Prosanthera ovalifolia). The leaf shape indicates the species. All are rounded shrubs between

1.5 and 2m in height and width.

The Round-leafed Mint Bush is also called Native Oregano. It produces clusters of purple to mauve flowers in spring. Its main attraction, however, is its leaves which are valued for both culinary (an oregano or mint substitute – both fresh and dried) and medicinal applications (in the treatment of headaches, colds and fever). This species grows well in pots but requires regular pruning. As the name suggests, the leaves of the Spiky Mint Bush (P. phylicifolia) have lanceolate leaves with strongly recurved margins. They are mildly aromatic. The stems are square in cross-section with short hairs growing between the corner ridges.

The flowers are white to pale purple with dark purple spots in the corolla throat and yellow spots on the lower lobe. The Ovalleafed Mint Bush (P. ovalifolia) is probably the most widely cultivated, easy to grow mint bush, with a strong minty aroma.

Flowering is so dense that it often obscures much of the foliage. Although purple and mauve are the usual flower colours, pink and white forms are known.

A cultivar of Prosanthera seiberi, ‘Minty’ has been developed that has a particularly strong emission of mint aroma when brushed or crushed, adding to the sensory appeal of a garden. A compact and dense shrub of neat growth habit, it produces delicate white to pale lilac flowers.

HAPPY READING GOLDEN Jade Timms Timms’ compelling debut YA novel, shortlisted for CBCA Book Of The Year 2026, deals with the impacts of a traumatic past, yet it is life-affirming and upbeat, focusing on self-acceptance, overcoming self-blame, evolving friendships and first love.

17 year old Eddie, the narrator, describes her beach-hometown summer holiday and her struggle with her self-blame for the drowning death of Jackson, her brotherin-law, who she adored. He’d told her not to help in a perilous rescue three years ago.

She watched him drown.

Eddie withdrew from friends and family, especially her twin brother, Pat, with whom she’d been very close. She only cares for her older sister, Viv, Jackson’s widow, believing she’s the one who needs support.

The heavy themes dealing with grief, guilt, anxiety and trauma are sensitively and cleverly woven into the very believable day-to-day reality of beach community life - the painful deflation of Eddie’s lungs any time she goes near a beach, especially the beach where Jackson died; her anger over her co-worker’s sloppy attitude to working

enter; family hiccups, falling outs, crushes and first loves – all glue Eddie together in different ways.

Her flashbacks and memories are peppered throughout. The catharsis when she finally ‘opens up’, guided by the new guy in town, the one who charges Eddie with electricity every time she touches him, the one who wants to hang out with her, brought a welcome rush of tension relief.

Eddie develops with every incident, every page until she releases her feelings and begins to trust again. You walk into the pages of this lovely book, cry and laugh and never doubt its depiction of reality. Its hopeful conclusion is very satisfying. Share it with a teen you love.

Celebrating 50 Years Arana Hills District Probus Club The club is celebrating a major milestone in 2026 as Probus Australia marks 50 years of bringing people together through friendship, shared interests and community connection.

Founded in Australia in 1976, Probus has grown into a nationwide network of social clubs designed for semi-retired and retired people who come together through shared interests and regular activities.
