BRODIE RIDES INTO BIRMINGHAM The sheer mountains of Switzerland where Brodie Chapman recently made podium in the final climb of the Tour de Suisse, makes her home village of Mount Glorious look like a speed bump. However, it was pedalling the tough bitumen and dirt roads of the D’Aguilar range that honed her skills to become one of the elite athletes who will represent Australia at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, 28 July - 8 August. Brodie lives and breathes bicycles: BMX, mountain bike, fixed-wheel, commuter or road bike, as long as she’s pedalling on two wheels, going fast or tackling tough courses, she’s happy. Her foray into racing began with downhill mountain biking and although she had great results in that genre, it was while at university that Brodie decided to try road racing with the UQ Cycling Club. Her natural talent showed its form, making podium in her first race at the Uni Games. She went on to race domestically for the National Road Series in 2016/17 before being offered a place

in the Australian team to race the inaugural Women’s Herald Sun Tour in 2018. Taking a day off work, Brodie raced her heart out and, although an amateur, won the race against professional riders. This historic win, coupled with strong results during the season, saw Brodie being offered a contract to race professionally in Europe. Turning pro in 2018 at the age of 27, Brodie has been selected for four World Championships and has contributed to some

stellar performances for her trade team, FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope, who are currently ranked third in the Women’s World Tour. Brodie pedalled herself clearly into view of selectors, choosing her as one of 5 athletes in Australia’s Road squad - part of 34 athletes selected in the Australian Cycling team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The road time trials will be held Thursday August 4 and road races on Sunday August 7, taking place on a Warwick loop, with the women completing seven laps of the 16km course. “It will be so much fun to race the Commonwealth Games, the team is strong and we’ll be sure to give it a good crack,” said Brodie. As athletes don their green and gold, Australians will be shouting from every corner of the nation, but we’re sure the cheers just may be a little louder coming from a tiny village atop a glorious mountain in Brisbane’s hinterland.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Budget 2022/23 - Staying Ahead of the Game and Protecting Our Environment. This year’s record $259 million capital works program is dedicated to building new community hubs, investing in grassroots sports, focusing on upgrades to our road network, protecting our environment and improving local playgrounds. I have heard the concerns of locals who want to ensure their lifestyle is protected as the region’s population grows and who want Council to change its priorities to better protect our environment. Whilst this year has seen a slight increase in our rates that equates to approximately $1.71 per week for the average owner occupier property, our rates are still the cheapest in Queensland, much lower than those for Brisbane City, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich. This year our Council will spend $62.4 million on its sustainable waste management program, but we still charge the lowest waste charges in South East Queensland. This year we are ramping-up our enormously successful land buyback program, so we can protect more natural areas from development. A large allocation of your rates will be placed in a Regional Infrastructure and Environment Fund, which gives us a green war chest for strategic land acquisitions and tree plantings. Some of the key infrastructure projects for the Samford and surrounding area include: • A $1.3 million ‘village makeover’ for Samford to enhance the contemporary rural character of the village with new landscaping, paving and street installations along Main Street. • $800,000 to build a new carpark next to Alan Cash Park (behind the Farmers Hall) in Samford Village. • $550,000 to complete the brand new $1.96 million community hall at Camp Constable in Mount Glorious, which will include a play area for kids. • $2.26 million to resurface 15 roads across the division. • $137,500 for a new pathway along Cash Avenue. LOCAL NEWS Australian Gymnastics Championships GOLD Toby Armstrong kept his balance to place overall first as the All-Around National Champion Level 8 Open at the 2022 Australian Gymnastics Championships. If his name and achievement sounds familiar, it was only last year The Village Pump wrote about his winning the Level 7 Open, for which Toby received the Young Sports Person of the Year Award in the 2022 Australia Day Dickson Awards.

To reach this level of achievement, Toby trained 16 hours a week for the past year to give himself the greatest chance at performing to the best of his ability. Despite rarely missing a training session, Toby knows it wasn’t just his dedication alone that netted him the title. “A big thank you to my coach Mike for believing in my ability, as well as his assistance as I honestly wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I did without him,” Toby said. “I also want to thank my parents, especially mum for all the effort she makes to get me to every training session.” Toby has reached this achievement while completing his final year of high school. While gymnastics will continue to play a big part in his future, he is also contemplating a career where the sky’s the limit. “As well as continuing with my gymnastics and seeing how far I can go with that, I would like to study aerospace engineering, with maybe even a future in the Air Force,” he said. We’re sure there’s more to come from this high achiever. Tanya Hall

Toby also medalled gold on pommel, gold on parallel bars, gold on high bar, bronze on floor and bronze on vault. These achievements followed an unorthodox start to Toby’s year. “I had a tough start to the year facing injuries, so when I was named National Champion for Level 8 Open it felt really amazing, plus a huge sense of relief knowing the challenges of overcoming my injury and all those training hours I put in were finally worth it,” he said.

LOCAL NEWS Our Kindy kids have now finished Term 2. We are already halfway through the year - blink and we will miss it! Their friendships are flourishing, imaginations are exploding and their Kindy clothes seem to be shrinking - or perhaps they are just growing way too fast! A huge highlight for the term was the Evergreen Children’s Theatre visiting our kindergarten and performing a lively and educational puppet show called The Reef Experience. Throughout the show, children explored the enchanting world of the Great Barrier Reef. They were encouraged to connect with the many interesting inhabitants and foster a sense of appreciation and respect for this natural wonder. The children also learned about the importance of caring for the reef environment so it can be enjoyed by all for generations to come.

SCK’s second working bee for 2022 was held at the end of Term 2 and what a result! The kindergarten is looking wonderful. Thank you so much to our SCK parents and teachers for their mammoth contribution, particularly Danielle and Stacey for coordinating everyone on the day. The weather shone, brekky burgers were provided and we had great company to tackle the tasks. What more could we ask for? The maintenance of our kindergarten is essential for the health and safety of everyone and the contribution from our families is what makes a community Kindy such a special place. Also, thank you to everyone who attended our recent open day. It was a great success and an absolute delight to meet the future families of the Kindy. Samford Area Mens Shed Isn’t it lovely when a well-oiled machine just hums along smoothly? Men particularly can relate to this as they admire mechanical creations from luxury and sports cars to steam engines and all other manner of mechanical marvels. There’s many a wife or girlfriend who just can’t understand what causes a grown man to drool over the miraculous marvel of machinery, or see beauty in greasy and oily engine parts, but men have been known to address their consternation with the words: “It’s a boy thing” as though that was all the explanation that was needed.

When the men of SAMS work with wood, metal or paint and pencil, it’s not just the satisfaction and enjoyment of creating something beautiful out of something that was rough and unformed, but also the satisfaction of admiring something that they created and crafted and that works with a purposeful function similar to a well-oiled machine. Any person who has seen the work that the men of SAMS do, can’t help but admire the creativity, skill and workmanship that has resulted in the object or artwork that they see in front of them. These talents come easy to some while others work hard to develop them. At SAMS there are always men who already have the knowledge and who are ready and willing to teach and share that knowledge with the other men. LOCAL NEWS ROOSTERS PLAN A GETAWAY Everton Park Roosters Junior Rugby Union U15’s fields a team of 22 boys aged 13 – 15 from suburbs in North Brisbane including Mt Glorious and Samford. While the team is in a lower division which is often a hard slog, they bring their positivity and team sprit to each game. Clancy Ponting from Mt Glorious (pictured) is an active member of the team. “I enjoy being part of a team, learning teamwork, and it has helped me build my concentration and determination. Plus, it teaches you how to make decisions quickly,” he said. The EP Roosters is a small club with little resources, backed by a group of parent volunteers who give time and talent to help the club thrive. They are planning a team end of season trip to Cairns in September, to celebrate the boy’s passion and commitment this year. The objective of the trip is to provide an inclusive, unique, meaningful experience, which will include adventure, activity and team building opportunities. Several fundraising activities are planned which will help them raise the funds needed

to pay for the trip and they’re reaching out to the community for support. On Sunday 10th July, they will be selling fundraising socks at Northey St Markets. XS to XL sizes are available with a range of fun prints for kids and adults. They will also have a raffle with some great prizes. On Saturday 16th July the team is hosting a Bubbles N Paint fundraiser. These are always great fun and the best part is you don’t need any art skills or experience to participate. An art teacher will guide you while you enjoy a glass of bubbles and a laugh with friends. The event is from 3pm – 6pm at Everton Park Junior Rugby Union Club grounds, 95 Hurdcotte St Enoggera. $60 covers arrival drink, nibbles and all painting needs. Lucky door prizes too. BRIDGING COMMUNITY ACCESS Increasing safety and accessibility across the South Pine River, the new Private Percy Cash Pedestrian Bridge has been widely welcomed by local residents. Some community groups have raised questions about the bridge’s design for horse riders, which was also tabled at a recent SDPPA meeting. Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11) was thrilled to MC the bridge opening by MBRC Mayor Peter Flannery, after multiple requests from parents, community groups and people with disabilities calling for a safer way to cross the South Pine River. “Not only will this pedestrian and cycle bridge mean local residents can safely cross the South Pine River, it also unlocks future opportunities to expand the existing network of footpaths and trails around the Samford Parklands area and adjoining estates to the north of the River,” Cr Grimwade said. Pine Rivers MP Nikki Boyd said this bridge was a priority project encouraging active lifestyles. “We know for every dollar we invest in active transport, we return $5 to Queensland health benefits, reduced traffic congestion and other benefits,” she said. While the new bridge promotes outdoor activities, safety enhancement was behind the initial idea put to Council. Local resident Carl Harries started advocating for a new development in 2010 after witnessing a number of near misses involving pedestrians and cyclists. “I was waiting to pull out of Gibbons Road when a family with small children were cycling across the bridge towards Samford. There were two trucks passing on the bridge at speed and I was convinced they must have been struck due to the lack of room. So much so I and another person jumped out of our cars and rushed to the bridge to assist. The family were okay but in shock.”

While many people are taking advantage of the new bridge, horse riding groups have major concerns about the bridge design and creek access underneath the bridge. Jed Millen noted the new earth works under the bridges makes it impassable for horses to cross where they used to. Attending the Samford War Animals ceremony on horseback with a young soldier, it was necessary to ride across the road bridge using an escort vehicle with hazard lights. Kath Evans from Samford Equestrian Group said the bridge has a blind corner for horse riders who cannot see if other cyclists or dog-walkers are crossing at the same time, which can cause some horses to panic. “The bridge and users need signage, both to say horse riders are allowed, and to guide other users to perhaps slow and/or give way to horses already on the bridge.” Local resident David Bannerman, a longterm advocate of the new bridge, notes recent flooding has made the crossing under the pedestrian bridge deeper than it used to be. “Horse riders have the option of using the road bridge, risky but they are classed

as road traffic, or going upstream above the junction with Samford Creek and using the low-level crossing Bob Millar (previous Councillor) developed from the old CSIRO crossing. It is just under water now since the flood,” he said. Cr Grimwade noted horses can cross the pedestrian bridge and other river crossings, including one along Gibbons Road. Informal pedestrian and horse access via the river will also be viable when new plants under the bridge are consolidated. “The gabions, placed rock and handrail have been installed along the majority of the southern bank as part of the project. These were not intentionally installed to reduce access to the river but were necessary to comply with footpath safety requirements and to protect the new bridge and adjacent footpaths from ongoing stream bed erosion,” he said. Despite these concerns, a number of other groups and local residents are pleased with the new bridge. “Samford Rangers FC welcomes the opening of the new bridge as it provides a further safe access point to the Samford Parklands facility,” said Graham Young, Samford Rangers Football Club President. Local residents similarly welcomed the enhanced safety aspects of the new bridge, including Yugar residents Helen and Heather-Lee. “Growing up here I occasionally saw people trying to cross the river using the car bridge, and every time was scary. There really was no safe way to cross over the river, and for those who use a pram or a toddler bike, any ‘bush path’ across the river wouldn’t have been suitable,” said Helen. Continued over

I look forward to this happening on our side of the river,” she said. Heather-Lee added, “It’s been disappointing to see the negativity in the local social media. People forget that just because it may not benefit them it still does benefit many others in the community. The new pedestrian bridge is of great benefit to me as it now allows me to safely walk and cycle to Samford village for shopping, dining, visiting local friends, taking my grandkids to the park and the skating bowl etc. I can also now safely access the trail into Ferny Grove and public transport.” Local resident Michael has similar sentiments. “I like the new bridge. It means pedestrians and kids on bikes are much safer now as they don’t have to cross the

Samford Stags Your Local Rugby League Club

Over the school holidays Samford Stags held the North Brisbane Aim Higher program. More than 40 kids from different clubs on the Northside of Brisbane came together over two days, participating in this high performance program. They had a great time developing their skills and learning about health and wellbeing, diet, sleep and recovery, while improving their overall performance. Big thank you to Nathan Drage, Rachael Swinbourne and Damien Kelly who gave up their time to support the program and kids – fantastic effort. Our Tots program has been a huge hit with 25 children aged 4 – 5 years participating every week, introducing these youngest club members to rugby league. They get a taste of ball skills, playing games passing the ball, kicking goals and many other games. Thank you to Scott Willard, Tim Woodland, Damian Crowley and many senior players, helping with this program every week. Scott Willard said, “Some future stars being born, and the kids are just having so much fun.” The Tackle Safe program is being rolled out with our two under 7s teams. They are only a couple of weeks away from their first

Gala Day, where tackling will be introduced for the first time. We have had support from Brisbane Rugby League to roll out this very successful program. Both our MKN Open Men’s teams and Under 17s are sitting in the top 4, while our Under 13s and Under 14s are in 5th and 6th positions. July is a huge month for the club, kicking off with Lady’s Day on Saturday 16th July (see ad opposite for further details). This is a very popular day, raising money for the McGrath Foundation. Players in all three games on the day will be wearing pink socks in support. The last two weeks in July will host Old Boys Day and the Country round. Another big day is planned for Old Boys Day on Saturday 23rd July with five huge games of footy, commencing with the under 7s at 10.30am and under 14s at 11.45am. In the afternoon, the under 17s will kick off at 1pm, followed by the two MKN Open Men’s teams from 2.30pm. Don’t miss this day - one of our biggest of the year. Country round will be held on 30th July. Big thank you to all our junior volunteers that turn out every week to get our kids/ players on the field, we appreciate your work. PINE RIVERS ELECTORATE UPDATE GIBBONS ROAD UPGRADE As part of the end-to-end Eaton’s Crossing Road safety upgrade, the intersection at Gibbons Roads and Mount Samson Road will now be upgraded to include dedicated turn lanes. This will significantly improve traffic flow around this intersection and increase safety for all road users. Further, dedicated directional turn lanes are planned for the intersections of Hodge Road, Lergessner Road and Alpine Drive. The safety upgrade plans for Eatons Crossing Road did not have Gibbons Road originally included. I strongly advocated to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey on the imperative for safety improvements here. Gibbons Road was added to the scope of works. I thank the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Minister for listening to the communities’ concerns and for progressing this important upgrade. Designs are scheduled to be released in coming months, with construction set to start in 2023. QLD State Budget Our Government has handed down a record state budget with investment in health and our frontline services. The largest health budget in our state’s history will deliver new hospitals and expand existing hospitals. It will recruit more doctors, nurses and frontline health workers and fund better health services for rural and regional centres. More bed capacity will be added with 93 beds at The Prince Charles Hospital and 204 more beds at Redcliffe

hospital. We are also creating a 150-bed specialised Queensland Cancer Care Centre at Herston. Major funding for national parks, the ongoing war on waste and climate action headline our ongoing commitment to the environment along with expansion of the State’s network of protected areas. We are also allocating funds towards communityfocused climate action that help drive better science and modelling so we can seize the opportunities in Queensland to accelerate emissions reduction and more jobs in more industries. Recently, I had the pleasure of opening Private Percy Cash Bridge alongside the Mayor Peter Flannery and local Councillor Darren Grimwade. Not only does this infrastructure provide our

community a critical connection for current and future safe active transport pathways, but it also provided local jobs and economic activity through our Covid recovery. This was a partnership project with Council, in particular it took lots of persistence from Darren and I to get the funding commitment required. I’d also like to recognise the advocacy of local residents such as Carl Harries on the importance of this bridge for the local community. Carl joined us for the opening alongside David Bannerman, Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association President Michael O’Sullivan, and other important community members. OUT & ABOUT ‘HAVE A GO’ MONTH CHASE YOUR DREAMS AT SEG After an extended season of cancelled events due to our sodden grounds on Denis Goodwin Reserve (and Samford Showgrounds), the area is finally dry enough for us to be back up and running - just! Entry numbers have been stronger than ever these past couple of weeks, with our recent clinics, jumping and dressage competitions packed out. After all the summer rain, eager riders are super keen to exercise their horses on suitable and safe footing such as our professional sand arenas and upgraded grass jumping surfaces. With another wet weather event forecast at time of writing, fingers crossed the grounds will once again hold up as we look forward to our next major event – another awesome ‘Member’s Day’ on Sunday 17th July. These friendly Dressage & Working Equitation competition/training days have proven incredibly popular as newbies can come along and participate side-by-side

with experienced high-level competitors in a fun and supportive environment regardless of experience. As the saying goes: ‘To participate is to win’ so there’s no better time than NOW to start your dream journey with us. As equestrians, we’re all on a lifelong learning curve – even Olympians! LOCAL NEWS Samford Museum The financial year has just ended which means we hear of Council budgets and the plans for the year ahead. Here we take a very brief look back at some items the Councils of 1917- 1919 dealt with according to “Not pineapples, not pine tree but Pine Rivers” compiled by Melva A Welch and published by Pine Rivers Shire Council in 2008. Copies are in Samford Museum’s research collection and MBRC libraries. 1917 and 1918: Council elections were held annually. Councillor William John Smith was Chairman. Members for Division 1, which included the Samford districts, were Robert Morrison, Charles Edward Nicholas and Henry William Cash. Items noted from the minutes: Letters of condolence sent to residents whose sons had been killed in WW1; Impounding was enforced after a resident complained of cattle being allowed to camp on the roads at night. On several occasions the resident had to get out of his car to wake the animals in order to pass; Roads maintenance and formation, culverts and bridge repairs were monthly business items. Inquiries were made re road graders, but shortness of funds already required the decision to dispense with services of many employees. 1919 - Robert Morrison was Chairman and Alexander McNeven had replaced Charles Nicholas in Division 1. Pneumonic influenza vaccine was supplied by Department of Health for the Pine Rivers Shire prevention program; Discussion was held on the suitability of blue crayon formerly used to

mark voting papers. Crayon was replaced by blue lead pencils for following elections; A bill to amend Local Authorities Acts was assented to in January 1921. Included in the changes was for triennial Council elections to be held on a Saturday between March 1 and 24. Unlimited rating powers were granted on the repeal of the limitation of six pence in the pound for the general rate. The Trustees and Committee are all volunteers, committing their time with no financial gain to help build and maintain a place in the community where all people are welcome. LOCAL NEWS VALE GRAHAM RADCLIFFE A gifted sculptor with a distinctive style, many would have experienced Graham Radcliffe’s wonderful collection of more than 100 marble and bronze indoor and outdoor sculptures permanently on display at the Pheonix Sculpture Garden in Mt Glorious. Sadly, Graham passed away at home on Thursday 19th May, not long after his 88th birthday.

LOCAL NEWS Samford State School Celebrates the Arts A display of pottery, paintings, wire art and sculptures offered an iridescent glimpse into our next generation’s minds at The Samford State School Art Soirée. With featured performances from the Senior Concert Band and Strings students, as well as vocal renditions from the Vivace and Allegro Choirs, the evening captured audience imaginations both visually and aurally. Every student created an innovative piece of art linked to their current curriculum, providing a new, self-expressed way to interpret the world around them. Deputy Principal, Trish Bennell-Kling, said the Art Soirée provided a welcome opportunity to showcase student creativity to the wider community after years of lockdowns and crowd restrictions. “With limited opportunities to showcase our learning over the last couple of years, it was important to bring the community together to celebrate the talents of our dedicated students,” she said. “Teachers innovatively used this opportunity to provide engaging

opportunities for student learning through English, Science, HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) and Technology. For example, Year 6 used their HASS unit as inspiration for historic pot making, Prep and Year 2 ensured their learning around sustainability was deepened through the use of recycled materials, and Year 3 were inspired by Indigenous weaving techniques.” The Art Soirée created an opportunity for teachers to think outside the box with this term’s syllabus, offering another medium to enhance student comprehension. “As a team, the teachers were excited for students to be able to demonstrate their learning in creative ways. Our teachers deeply value the arts, and this was another opportunity to engage our students and showcase their talents,” Trish said. “Samford State School takes a lot of pride in showcasing the learning of all students, especially with the community. One of the most memorable parts of the evening was seeing students’ pride and excitement in sharing their creative pieces with others,” she said. “We look forward to next year’s Art Soirée and hope to be able to include more art pieces from our wider Samford Community.”

Samford Bowls Club After the rainy days we had a blast of cold weather, but the beautiful winter days lately have made it a magical experience out on the bowling green and Samford Bowls Club is the perfect place to be. The Ladies Perpetual Trophy was played on Monday 20th June with teams from all over the Brisbane district travelling to Samford for ‘Take 2’ of this event that was previously washed out. A full day of bowls with games of Pairs and 4’s in the morning followed by Triples in the afternoon. To top off a great day of bowling, the Samford Owls team WON the trophy with 4 wins and with a margin of plus 74. Second was Chermside with 4 wins and a margin of plus 46, then Windsor with 4 wins and a margin of 25. Sponsored by Green Gauge and Samford Grove Retirement Village. Village Manager Bronwyn O’Brien was on hand to present the Trophy. Trivia night 24th June. As one member said to me after the event, “It lets you know how much you don’t know.” What a lot of fun 100 adults can have when you have two fun loving chaps Ken and David running the show. about it. The idea behind this tip is to hold you accountable. In other words, by telling your friends, family and colleagues your ambitions, they will motivate you and keep you on track if you start to deviate. While this sounds good in theory, a recent study proposes this is not the case. In fact, the researchers suggest the opposite is true – those who told others their goals were less likely to achieve them. Initially this does not make sense – surely the more people who know what your goal is, the more help, guidance and motivation you can get. And no one wants to be seen as a failure, correct? Psychology Professor Peter Gollwitzer would disagree. He is the primary author of the article ‘When intentions go public: does social reality widen the intention-behaviour gap?’ According to his research, ‘people who keep their intentions to themselves are more likely to achieve their goals than those who announce them’. Our brains struggle to differentiate between ‘reality’ and ‘imaginary’, and also between ’talking’ and ‘doing’. It seems when we tell someone what we want to do, and they acknowledge it, we start to feel good about it. We also feel we are already closer to our goals than we are. These good feelings diminish the drive to pursue the goal and we quit sooner than we would have. EDIBLE GARDEN TRAIL UPDATE MUM’S PUMPKIN PIE

A SWEET PUMPKIN TREAT With the chill of winter now well and truly upon us, we at the SEGT are gearing up for an amazing Trail weekend on 6th and 7th August. Thankfully, pumpkins are ripening, and bowls of tasty pumpkin soup are warming and sustaining us as we beaver away. For those who may be getting a bit bored with the savoury side of pumpkins, check out this sweet and delicious old family favourite that Ceri managed to snaffle from her Mum’s recipe files.

PASTRY 150g plain flour 75g cold butter 1tsp sugar 1 egg yolk 3tbsp cold water (add more if req) Put flour and sugar in a bowl, then grate cold butter into the bowl. Squeeze and rub until you get fine breadcrumbs (or this can be done in a food processor with great success). Add egg yolk and cold water in one go and mix until just combined. Make into a ball and roll out the dough sufficient to line (bottom and sides) a 22cm round flan dish. FILLING 1 egg ½ cup pure cream 1cup cooked pumpkin 1cup brown sugar ¼tsp ground ginger ¼tsp ground cloves 1tsp ground cinnamon 1tsp vanilla essence In a blender or food processor (or use a stick blender), combine all filling ingredients until smooth. Pour directly into the flan dish

and bake at 210c for 15 minutes, then turn down to 180c for 15 more minutes or until set and brown. Serve hot or cold (we love both) with whipped cream. Yum! If you’re lucky, you may be able to enjoy leftovers the next day. With the floods at the end of February and the heavy rains in May, the team down at Millen Farm have certainly struggled to keep farming under these conditions. Arran has never seen a start to the year like this. For Liam, it has been a struggle to grow food for Meals on Wheels Moreton Bay and it has been necessary to pause collection for a couple of months whilst he replanted the farm. In early March, the team were overwhelmed with local community support for their Farm Rescue Produce Box initiative. This certainly helped the farmers recover, after the floods washed away recently planted seeds and seedlings and soaked remaining produce to rot. Just as they were ready for full production, May saw continuous heavy rains which again was another setback, but thankfully not as bad as February. The farm is now recovering, knock on wood, and when you drive past you can see the rows of beds bursting with produce.

For those that are unaware, Millen Farm is host to two farmers: Arran from Powerful Owl and Liam who is the charity farmer for The Mini Farm Project. Both farmers have had an amazing working relationship for the last one and a half years since the farm restarted in October 2020. As we have navigated our way around the various restrictions and precautions associated with COVID-19, we have been reviewing our service times on a Sunday. Even before COVID, it was a regular practice to combine our two congregations over the Christmas School holidays when a number of people were away on holidays. This year we extended that practice and it has become our regular worship time, albeit subject to ongoing review. A recent survey found that most were happy with the arrangement. Music seemed to be the main difference. Some found music to be a distraction from worship while for others it was an essential component. These matters were considered and discussed at the June Parish Council meeting. During July we are going to trial a mixture of options. Our service time will remain at 8am but the format will vary slightly. 10 July - Sung Eucharist with hymns 17 July - Said Eucharist without hymns 24 July - Sung Eucharist with hymns 31 July – Said Eucharist with hymns.

It was a great joy to have a group of local artists exhibiting in the Parish Hall during the Samford Art Trail through June. There is so much local talent which unfortunately remains hidden for much of the time. Regular Sunday Services – 8am Motorcycle ride group gathers at Samford AMPOL on the first Saturday of the month for an 8:30/9am departure. OUT & ABOUT By the time these writings reach press, the library will be (weather permitting) holding the last two days of school holidays (Thursday 7th and Friday 8th) Children’s Books, Toys, Puzzles and Games for sale outside Drakes Samford. Many thanks to Drakes for once again allowing the library to set up in the shop frontage area. So far, the Drakes Samford fundraising days have been a great success, with many bargains had and lots of freebies handed out. Seeing the smile on children’s faces on receiving an extra little gift is always so rewarding. Books 4 Sale fundraising at the RSL Samford car park in Progress Street began on 25th June and the new trailer was put to good use. The day was well supported and turned into quite a marathon effort for volunteers in sorting books, as a new system needed to evolve with using the trailer. Each week, the system is refined and the workload is now much reduced. Two tiny baby plovers entertained volunteers earlier in the day while their watchful parents stood close by on squawk

watch. The trailer will be on site in the RSL car park every Saturday unless the RSL has an event or wet weather forces cancellation. Keep an eye out for the library’s street signage. ENTERPRISING STUDENTS Ferny Grove State High School Senior Business students showcased another spectacular Enterprise Day recently. This event was a fantastic opportunity for the business students to utilise and practice many essential 21st century skills. There was a definite buzz in the air throughout the day, and everyone enjoyed enhancing their skills in areas of problem-solving,

teamwork, leadership, collaboration, financial literacy, innovation and creativity. Prior to the lunchtime extravaganza, students had the privilege to hear from two keynote speakers regarding entrepreneurship and economic development in the real world. Thank you to Mrs Leah Hudson, Founder of Flametree Financial and State Manager, Business Development Qld for sharing your inspirational personal journey in the financial brokering business. Leah is also Co-chairperson for the Schools in Commerce Committee of the Hills & District Chamber of Commerce. Sharing the spotlight was Cr Steven Toomey from the Gap Ward. Cr Toomey shared his journey from starting his career as a Tradie to the position he holds today. He outlined the role and importance of the Brisbane Business Hub and the opportunities to connect with business networks. Cr Toomey spoke on the economic impacts of infrastructure and development and how this will unfold over the next 10 years leading up to the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane. PILATES LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING What a great term of Pilates classes it has been. Mat classes have taken us through standing work with weights and bands, connecting exercises together to create Flow classes and working with the Pilates circles. COCKSPUR THORN Most gardeners are happy to tolerate thorny plants for the sake of their flowers (e.g. roses and bougainvillea) or fruit (lemons). Wildlife lovers appreciate the benefits of growing the Cockspur Thorn (Maclura cochinchinensis) for its habitat benefits. Found growing naturally from Milton in south-eastern NSW to Cape York, this plant either forms a vigorous climber in shady positions or a dense shrub in the open sun. In its natural rainforest environment, the main indication of its presence is the dropped fruit on the forest floor. As a climber or a shrub, the thorns help to support the branches either between themselves or to a supporting tree. As with all thorny plants, the thorns evolved to protect the plant from large herbivores. The mid-green adult leaves are oblong to elliptical in shape and reach 10cm in length,

although the juvenile leaves are much smaller. Like the related figs and mulberries, the Cockspur Thorn has a milky sap and edible fruit. In this plant, the globular fruit are orange-yellow in colour, sweet and juicy and appear after summer flowering. Cockspur Thorn has separate male and female plants with fruiting depending upon the presence of both. The fruit is sought after by a variety of birds and lizards. Being thorny, the plant makes an ideal nesting space for small bird, like wrens and finches, that are protected from predators. It is a host plant for the common crow butterfly (Euploea core). Whilst probably not an ideal plant for small gardens, those with a large space or on acreage would find benefits from growing the Cockspur Thorn. Clipped as a hedge, it forms a protective barrier around, for example, a vegetable plot or chicken run, some remnant rainforest, or a revegetation area. In America (and in early Australian settlements), a similar plant, the ‘osage’ orange (Maclura pomifera) was grown around paddocks to retain horses and cattle – a job suited to the Cockspur Thorn. It is an ideal lantana replacement plant in addition to being fire-retardant.
