LOCAL LEGEND LAUNCHES NEW BOOK Big-hearted local legend Sam Thaiday has written another book. His children’s book How the Fish got their Bones, brings to life a powerful teaching story from the Torres Strait Islands.

His iconic football career established his status as a much-loved celebrity and since then he has become well known for his work in the media and his extensive efforts supporting indigenous young people.

In 2025 he claimed the title of King of the Jungle after being crowned winner of the television reality contest I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! Australia.

In addition to raising money for a charity close to his heart, his time in the South African bush sparked the idea for a book, which has now come to fruition with the launch of How the Fish got their Bones earlier this month.

Together with artist Tori-Jay Mordey, they bring to life the story of two boys who encounter an old man on the beach. The boys make a fateful decision not to share their abundant catch with him, and this has far-reaching consequences.

With a rhythmic text and vibrant illustrations that make each page dance, How the Fish Got Their Bones carries a powerful environmental message for young and old alike, while showcasing the Torres Strait environment and the importance of balance in the natural world.

It’s a book meant for sharing and reading aloud together, and a wonderful way to bring First Nations culture to our young readers.

Sam will be reading and talking about his book at Pages in the Park, the new

children’s book festival happening at John Scott Park on Saturday August 22 from noon to 4pm.

VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD EVERY LIFE MATTERS: A PLEA FOR WILDLIFE AWARENESS ON LOCAL ROADS As residents of Samford Valley, we are privileged to share our beautiful rural environment with a diverse range of native wildlife.

Living alongside such rich ecological diversity brings a shared responsibility, especially when we take to the roads.

Local roads have seen an increase in injured and killed wildlife in recent times.

With winter bringing shorter daylight hours, wildlife is actively on the move during breeding season, particularly at dawn and dusk.

High-Risk Hotspots Identified City of Moreton Bay Council (COMB) data reveals a sober reality for local motorists: three Council roads in our immediate surrounding area rank in Moreton Bay’s top 11 worst locations for wildlife-vehicle collisions. These are Gibbons Road (Samford Valley), Winn Road (Cashmere) and Lilley Road (Warner). Foggs Road in Mount Samson has also seen a concerning spike in wildlife deaths recently.

Key connecting roads such as Eaton’s Crossing Road and Mt Samson Road also have a high risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions.

A recent study commissioned by the COMB revealed a direct link between vehicle speeds and the frequency and severity of local wildlife-vehicle collisions.

The study found that higher road speed limits led directly to more frequent and far more severe wildlife accidents.

COMB Mayor, Peter Flannery is urging motorists to slow down and stay alert, stating that every kilometer above the speed limit endangers wildlife.

You may have noticed Council has installed LED Wildlife warning signs in higher risk zones, which will activate when drivers exceed the speed limit, prompting them to slow down.

Recent statistics captured by the signs indicate that 86% of motorists were traveling at or below the speed limit. However, a dangerous percentage of drivers still exceeded the speed limit in these areas.

How You Can Help Slow down at dawn and dusk. Reduce your speed by just 5 to 10km/h in known wildlife corridors during peak movement hours.

Scan the verges. Keep an eye on the sides of the road, not just the lane ahead.

LOCAL NEWS TIME CAPSULE UNVEILED On July 26th, the Dayboro Lions unveiled their 25 year Time Capsule, which was filled with messages, photos, memorabilia and personal items from 2001, bringing the community together to reminisce the past.

Approximately 170 people attended the event and it was amazing to watch the excitement on everyone’s face as the time capsule was raised to the beat of the drum roll, played by two local high school boys – David Heath and Arcarius.

Bob Millar OAM, our Pine Rivers Shire Councillor in 2001, returned to Dayboro to take on the role of MC. A number of special guests were in attendance, including former club members and Dayboro residents, some who had travelled several hours to participate. Mayor Peter Flannery and Division 11 Councillor Ellie Emith were welcomed along with Steve and Chris Harper (sons of the late Tony and Audrey Harper) and Tony’s brother Brian.

Lion’s members of 2001: Joe Bradley, Jo Calam, John King, Lloyd McPerson, Russel Plunkett, Hans Tobler and Tommy Williams, along with 2001 Dayboro Scout leader Kevin Taylor and Scouts Ellen (Wynn) and Jane (Bourke), were also present.

The capsule was the initiative of two dedicated members, Tony and Audrey Harper, who came up with the idea of burying the past to raise money for the future – a Dayboro House Retirement Village. The preparation and burying of the time capsule in 2001 was a combined event with the naming of the Dayboro Lion’s Park by Yvonne Chapman, Bob Millar and Brian Costelloe.

My late husband Brian was President at the time and he would be proud to know that I am President at the unveiling/raising of the capsule.

Recent sightings of several platypus in the South Pine River are a lovely reminder of how fortunate we are to live in an area with such a variety of wildlife.

Right now, it is peak breeding season for platypus, so if you know where to look, there’s a good chance you’ll spot one of these very elusive creatures.

Platypus are also more active in winter, so they’ll be visible in the waterways for longer, as they need more food.

There are still details about the platypus that are unknown, so it is extra special to see them in our local river.

BIRD SURVEY On 17 July, our birders recorded 61 species in about 3 hours following the usual route. Silvereyes continued to be found in good numbers this winter, but the highest count was for two flocks of Topknot Pigeons totalling approximately 90 birds.

Australasian Figbirds were also plentiful, with one large flock sitting in the top branches of a dead Waterhousea. It was very pleasing to find all 3 local species of fairywrens (Superb, Red-backed and Variegated), some which were in the rank vegetation beyond the waterhole and to hear a White-eared Monarch nearby.

An Eastern Yellow Robin was gathering nest material along the edge of riverbank planting P4, so we hope the pair is successful with raising young. The grand finale while sitting in the netball shelter cross-checking our bird list was watching an Australian Hobby zoom low over the riverine canopy heading upstream.

We had been alerted by the alarm calls of Noisy Miners and watched this sleek raptor as a it covered a few hundred metres in very quick time. Full details can be found on the free eBird app.

Bushcare Our next bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 9 August from 2pm to 4pm. Our priority will be weeding around our new

infill and understorey plants in rainforest zone P2 and hillside planting P3, but we would like to tackle riverside planting P4 too.

However, if the weather remains dry, we may need to water some of the new plants too, so a big turnout (ideally well over a dozen volunteers) would really help us. We hope to see you there.

LOCAL NEWS A NEW CHAPTER FOR OUR COMMUNITY There is something quietly magical about slowing down and reading a book outdoors. Wrapped i n a b l a n ke t , surrounded by trees and listening to children discover new stories, it reminds us that life’s simplest moments are often the most memorable.

That spirit is at the heart of Pages in the Park, a new celebration of children’s literature coming to Samford at John Scott Park on Saturday 22 August, from 12 noon to 4pm. Created to bring families, readers and local creatives together, the event offers a relaxed winter afternoon where stories come to life beyond the page.

Picnic Bring a picnic rug and your favourite snacks or enjoy food from nearby cafés. For a special treat, grazing boxes from Sophia’s Greek Kitchen can be pre-ordered for collection just a short stroll from the park.

The afternoon begins with time to explore local author stalls, including Emily Serow, author of Kirra and Coco, alongside a range of interactive activities.

Children can decorate the stone bookworm, add ideas to the wishing tree, browse the community book swap, plait sections of a story rug or create self-portraits for the Pages in the Park poster.

Creative competitions for bookmarks, colouring and short stories will run

throughout the day. Visitors can also support local creative businesses by joining Foliage and Moss to craft miniature bookcases, pick up handmade storytelling animals from The Little Crafter, browse zines by artist Chelsea Lomandra or discover new reads from Baffies Oan Books.

MEET AUTHORS INCLUDING SAM THAIDAY From 1pm to 3pm, the Story Stage will feature live readings and conversations with local authors, giving audiences the chance to hear directly from the writers behind the books.

We are very excited that Sam Thaiday will among them, reading from his new book, How the Fish got their Bones, a traditional Torres Strait story retold for children. It explores the importance of sharing, respect for nature, and community balance. Sam’s favourite children’s book is The Gruffalo.

Other highlights include Bethany Loveridge, author of Harper Wells: Renegade Timeline Officer, recently selected for the 2026 Readers Cup. The festival concludes from 3pm to 4pm with competition winners announced, prizes presented, and an opportunity for visitors to share feedback to help shape future events. With community support, Pages in the Park has the potential to become a cherished annual tradition celebrating literacy, creativity and connection.

TIME TO ACT: FIREWEED HAS ARRIVED If you’ve noticed bright yellow daisy-like flowers appearing along local roadsides and in paddocks this winter, you’re not alone. Fireweed has arrived early across the Samford district.

This year’s unusually warm, wet winter has created ideal conditions for Fireweed and many other broadleaf weeds to germinate earlier and establish more vigorously than we would normally expect.

We recently assisted Riding for the Disabled Association Samford (RDA Samford) to control Fireweed that had spread from an adjoining council nature reserve into the Highvale Holiday Block.

GrassForce has been helping improve pasture productivity and weed management on the property over the past year.

Widespread By the time we inspected the site, the infestation was too widespread for hand removal, making a selective herbicide program the only practical solution.

Fireweed is more than just another weed. It is a Category 3 Restricted Invasive Plant under Queensland’s Biosecurity Act 2014, meaning landholders have a General Biosecurity Obligation to take reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks it poses.

The biggest concern is its impact on livestock, particularly horses, which are common on our local acreage properties.

Fireweed also affects cattle, causing cumulative liver damage if consumed.

While sheep and goats are generally more tolerant than horses and cattle, they are not immune to Fireweed toxins and should

not be relied upon as a control method.

An average plant can produce more than 10,000 seeds in a season, with seed readily spread by wind, livestock, hay, pasture seed, mulch and machinery.

If you only have a handful of plants, act now. Wear gloves, remove the entire plant, including the roots, place it directly into a plastic bag, and dispose of it in your general waste bin or an approved disposal facility. Don’t leave pulled plants lying in the paddock, as flowering plants can still mature and release seed.

Once plants become widespread, hand pulling quickly becomes impractical, making spot spraying or boom spraying with an appropriate herbicide the most effective option.

The best long-term defence, however, isn’t herbicide, it’s productive pasture. Fireweed establishes most readily where pasture has become thin, overgrazed, repeatedly slashed short or otherwise stressed.

As a general rule, try to maintain around 15 to 20cm of pasture height through winter and year round wherever practical.

Dense, vigorous pasture shades the soil, suppresses weed germination and leaves little opportunity for Fireweed, or almost any other broadleaf weed, to establish.

The takeaway is simple, this season’s warm, wet winter has given Fireweed an early start, but there’s still time to get ahead of it. Walk your paddocks now, deal with isolated plants before they seed, and treat larger infestations strategically. Healthy pasture isn’t just about producing more feed, it is the most effective long-term weed control you’ll ever invest in.

LOCAL NEWS COURAGE, PURPOSE AND POSSIBILITY In 2021, Teresa Burbery’s life took an unexpected turn when she sustained a spinal cord injury. After spending 20 years building a successful career as a professional hairdresser and salon owner, she was suddenly faced with the challenge of rebuilding her independence and adapting to a new way of life.

While the journey has not been without its challenges, it also opened the door to a new purpose, one centred on helping others through compassion, understanding and lived experience.

Mental Health Throughout her rehabilitation, Teresa became aware of the limited mental health support available for people adjusting to acquired disabilities. Rather than allowing that experience to define her, she used it as inspiration for a new goal.

Determined to help others facing life’s challenges, Teresa enrolled in a Diploma of Counselling at TAFE Queensland.

With support from a scholarship funded

For Teresa, the application process itself became a turning point.

WELCOME TO TERM 3 What a wonderful few weeks it has been as we welcomed back both familiar faces and new families to Samford Community Playgroup for another exciting term of learning, play and connection. It has been lovely to see our community come together once again, with children eagerly exploring, creating and making new friendships.

Our little explorers roared into week one with a prehistoric adventure, enjoying a range of dinosaur-themed activities.

Children became budding palaeontologists as they uncovered hidden dinosaur fossils through sensory excavation, while our marvellous dinosaur playdough inspired imaginative storytelling, creativity and fine motor development.

World Nature Conservation Day On 28 July, we celebrated World Nature Conservation Day, a special opportunity to encourage children to appreciate the natural world and learn about the importance of protecting our environment for future generations. Throughout the week, families enjoyed a variety of nature-based experiences inspired by the beautiful native plants blooming throughout our playgroup garden.

Children carefully observed the colours, textures and shapes of native flowers before creating their own still-life paintings, fostering creativity while encouraging observation and an appreciation of Australia’s unique flora.

Another favourite activity was our clay exploration table. Clay provides rich sensory experiences while strengthening the small

muscles in children’s hands and fingers, supporting the development of skills needed for drawing and early writing. As children rolled, pinched, squeezed and sculpted their creations, they were also developing hand-eye coordination, problem-solving abilities and confidence through openended creative expression.

Our ever-popular nature potion station was buzzing with excitement as children mixed leaves, flowers, seed pods and other natural treasures into magical concoctions.

This imaginative play encouraged curiosity, scientific thinking, language development and cooperative play while nurturing a deeper connection with the natural environment.

Community Opportunities Our much-loved Mindful Movers Yoga program continues to be a highlight for many families, providing children with opportunities to build confidence,

develop balance and coordination, practise mindfulness and learn valuable strategies for emotional regulation through imaginative movement and storytelling.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SAMFORD’S MAGICAL CREEKS While most classrooms have four walls, the children at The Prince Charles Hospital Early Education Centre, Chermside are fortunate enough to discover that some of the most meaningful learning experiences happen outdoors. Their Creek Kindy program provides children with regular opportunities to immerse themselves in nature, planting the seeds for a lifelong love of the natural world while promoting resilience and a genuine sense of belonging through hands-on discovery.

Creek Kindy was implemented by Assistant Director, Katie McLaren, whose connection to Samford began more than two decades ago. After moving to Samford with her family in 1999, Katie quickly fell in love with it all.

Undambi Rotary Park Her childhood was spent exploring Undambi Rotary Reserve Creek with her older brother, climbing trees, balancing across rocks and creating memories that would shape her appreciation for the outdoors, and the important role nature plays in children’s confidence and wellbeing.

Today, Katie has brought that passion to life through Creek Kindy, creating opportunities for children to experience the same sense of wonder that defined her own childhood. Every visit encourages children to take safe risks through exploration, build resilience and develop confidence in different environments. More than an excursion, Creek Kindy has become a third classroom, where children develop an authentic connection with nature while experiencing the beauty of Samford.

Katie describes the program as one of her proudest achievements and says she will always be a Samford girl at heart.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SALE SUCCESS Beautiful weather helped visitors from all around Queensland and further afield show up for the two-day fundraiser with lots of books, puzzles and games finding new homes. All the home preserves also sold well, for a great fundraising result.

Funds raised are sufficient to cover an official audit and purchase additional shelving for books in the storage shed.

Rain showers did threaten to create an issue during outdoor pack up, however all was well.

Thanks to five helpers, especially our American visitor Beverly, Friday set up and Sunday pack up was a breeze and done in record time.

Volunteers Special thanks to Ray, Sev and Kendall who turned up early on Saturday and Sunday to set up the outdoor area of two marquees, six tables and 30 cartons of crime fiction books to load onto the tables.

Thank you to all the students from Samford State School and Hillbrook who

volunteered over the two days. Once again, thanks to David Reed of Samford Scouts for his help in assisting the sale to run smoothly. In future happenings, Ali France MP has tentatively booked to visit the BindersKeepers site on 8 August.

The annual AGM and General Meeting is set down for 11 August (venue yet to be confirmed) starting at 6.30pm (and generally finished by 7.30pm). All are welcome to attend. All positions are vacant for anyone interested in either taking on a

role, or general help or simply coming along and hearing the latest news, book sorting and shelving progress.

On 12 August BindersKeepers will be attending the Bunnings Keperra Ekka event with tables of jigsaw puzzles (all guaranteed complete) and games. The event runs for two hours from 10am to 12 noon and will be held outdoors. Keep a look out for our orange branded marquee.

Samford Bowls Club PENNANTS The pennants season is well under way with only a few rounds to be played before the grand finals on 29 August. Division 4 is presently sitting in sixth position on the ladder with Division 6 sitting at fourth position. With three more rounds to be played, both Division teams could still make it into the semi-finals.

Venues Announced 2026 State Champion of Club Champions and the 2026 Open State Pennant Finals.

B Wilson from Bowls Queensland (BQ) has announced that the host venues for two of the state’s most anticipated interclub events, will be as follows: The State Champion of Club Champions will be held at North Mackay Bowls Club (Goosies Sport & Recreation Club) from 14 to 21 November, with the State Pennant Finals following on 28 and 29 November.

The Pennant Finals mark a significant moment for the sport in Queensland, with

all three divisions now operating as open gender competitions.

The change, backed by 75% of respondents in a state-wide survey conducted in late 2025, allows teams to be made up of men, women or a mix of both, competing across three rinks of Fours over 21 ends.

Division 1 of the State Pennant Finals will be hosted by Coolum Beach Sports Club, Division 2 by Capalaba Sports Club, and Division 3 by North Mackay Bowls Club, reflecting the Board’s commitment

to spreading major events across regional Queensland.

Both events would be well worth watching as the best players from around the state will be competing.

Club Championships The Samford District Bowls Club Championship Final competitions have almost all been completed. The winning team of the Fours Championship final was Lesley Maher, Maureen Sacco, Julie Gallwey and Sue Ferguson.

The winners of the final Pairs Club Competition were David Englebright and Martin Hewitt. Both these teams are now eligible to enter into the District Champion of Club Champions.

QCWA Samford ANNUAL AGM CWA Samford Branch held their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 15 July.

The meeting was chaired by Anna Mead, Secretary of Greater Brisbane Division.

On Saturday 18 July several of our CWA Samford members attended the 612ABC Brisbane Open House event at South Bank, Brisbane. Lilah, Tanya and Diane took part in pre-selling the Jenny Woodward ABC/QCWA Weather Calendar for 2027.

All proceeds from the calendar sales go to Queensland Country Women’s Association to support vulnerable women in regional and rural Queensland. The official date for release was 6 August. Also included in the calendar are some memorable and delicious QCWA recipes.

Some talented Samford CWA members crafted a fabric square (pictured) depicting an Ekka memory for the 612ABC and Queensland Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists 150 Years Ekka Quilt. The quilt will be on display at the exhibition to bring back memories for everyone who has attended the Ekka over the years. AROUND THE VILLAGE ANOTHER GRANT FOR NODDY Samford RDA horse Noddy (pictured) has received a second $5,000 grant from the Queensland Off the Track (OTT) Program to assist with his care. As an ex-racehorse, Noddy is eligible for annual grants to support his new ‘career’ supporting people with a disability. However, the funding has come at a perfect time.

Last year, Noddy was suffering from a gastric problem when financial assistance arrived. This year, it’s rain scald, a painful skin condition.

Noddy raced as Hey Frisco in his former life but made an easy transition from galloper to reliable RDA horse. He also delights riders and volunteers alike with his gentle but cheeky nature.

Samford RDA is very grateful for funding from the OTT Program which supports the placement of retired racehorses and pacers to promote productive lives after racing.

The RDA herd has had several ex-racehorses over the years, proving the adaptability of horses of all breeds and sizes to meet the strict requirements necessary to work with people with a disability.

Samford Rural Fire Brigade OPEN DAY SUCCESS Despite a very cold start to the day, the sun was shining to greet our visitors for our Open Day on 26 July. The cooler weather must have sparked everyone’s appetite as the BBQ was running hot all morning.

Our Brigade members were on hand to share vital tips ahead of the upcoming fire season including creating a bushfire survival plan, property preparedness, obtaining fire permits, new smoke alarm regulations and the fire danger ratings and warning systems.

How many lollies were in that bottle? 122!

With Reuben guessing 121 and Maeve 123, both were given prizes. All the budding firefighters spent their time in and around the fire trucks. A fun time for all.

The Open Day was in recognition of RFSQ week which celebrates the 27,000 volunteer firefighters from more than 1,400 brigades who keep their communities safe across Queensland.

DID YOU KNOW? NATIVE HYPOESTES (HYPOESTES FLORIBUNDA) Not many native plants flower in the winter months (apart from hybrid cultivars and wattles), which makes Native Hypoestes a valuable addition to the garden, adding a welcome splash of colour to understorey areas in the cooler months. This species

has a widespread distribution, occurring in drier rainforest, open forests and woodland in inland and coastal areas of Queensland, New South Wales and northern Australia.

It is also found in parts of South-East Asia, such as the Philippines. Indigenous Australians are said to use the leaves and stems to relieve colds and treat sores.

Native Hypoestes is an attractive herbaceous shrub 60cm – 1m tall with

mid-green opposite leaves. The mauve to purple flowers with a prominent lip are carried in clusters in the leaf axils during autumn and winter. The flowers attract native bees and other beneficial insects.

This hardy shrub tolerates most soils and grows best in semi shade or shade. It is easily propagated from seeds or cuttings and will readily self-seed in the garden.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR NATIVE PLANTS The real estate saying, location, location, location applies to growing native plants as well. Many people have been put off growing these wonderful plants because they think they are difficult to establish in suburban gardens or because they have been unsuccessful in the past. This is usually because they have attempted to grow a plant in unsuitable conditions. Each plant species has its own particular requirements for growth.

Questions to consider when selecting a plant include: What are the garden conditions, for example, soil type, aspect, amount of shade and rainwater flow for example?

Do the normal conditions under which this plant grows match up with the conditions in the garden?

Selecting plants that grow naturally in your area is a good indicator of success.

Some factors, such as soil type can be modified to some extent. For example, clay soils can be made more friable with the addition of compost and gypsum.

Sandy soils will retain water better with the addition of lots of organic material. All soils benefit from mulching. This not only prevents evaporation of soil moisture, but also helps maintain an even soil temperature, suppresses weed growth, prevents water run-off and erosion and, if using organic mulch, provides soil nutrients as it breaks down. Addition of a slow-release fertiliser for native plants (ie low in phosphates) every 3 to 6 months also aids plant health and vitality, Tube stock plants have been found to establish better than larger plants. roots develop faster in the new conditions.

Regardless of the size pot, a hole that is two to three times larger is recommended.

The removed soil should then be mixed with compost and the hole filled with water.

When all water has drained into the surrounding soil, a shallow layer of the remixed soil can be placed back into the hole and the plant can be removed from its pot (whilst keeping the potting mix and root ball as undisturbed as possible).

Pots can be soaked in a bucket of water for half an hour for easy removal whilst digging the hole.

Easy steps to remove a plant from a tube are as follows; slide the hand over the top of the pot with the stem between two fingers, then massage the pot slightly to loosen the soil. Finally upturn the pot so the hand will collect the root ball and potting mix. If the plant does not slide out, give the pot a flick or tap the bottom with a solid object.

Place the plant into the centre of the hole so the root ball is about 2cm below the finished ground level. This slight depression will capture water. Gently backfill around the plant and tap the soil down to ensure good root-soil contact and to eliminate any air bubbles that could result in drying out.

Water the plant in well using a seaweed, fish emulsion, compost tea etc tonic at the recommended concentration. Mulch well around the plant, being careful not to place the mulch in contact with the stem.

Watering every few days over the first weeks of transplanting helps to establish the roots. Thereafter a deep, infrequent watering (when the soil about 2cm below the surface is dry) should be adequate to maintain a deep rooting plant.

DID YOU KNOW? CEDAR CREEK BUSHCARE How much do you really know about ticks? It’s a familiar topic and one that came up when we introduced a new member of the group to the rewards and risks of bushcare. The problem is there is a lot of old-school folklore floating around that can actually make a bite worse. So we thought we’d share four of the most common myths about ticks, debunked by modern science and medical guidelines.

Myth 1: Ticks fall from trees If you speak to almost anyone who has had to deal with an attached tick, they will likely tell you it ‘dropped down’ onto their head. This myth is commonly believed because ticks do love to attach themselves to the scalp, hairline and behind the ears.

When we find them there, we assume it fell or jumped from above. In truth, the tick simply hitched a ride on a shoe or ankle from ground level and silently crawled all the way up to one of their preferred places to feed.

Myth 2: You need fine tipped tweezers to remove a tick It is not safe to use tweezers to remove

an Australian paralysis tick. Simply disturbing the tick can cause it to inject more saliva containing toxins and allergens, so squeezing it is the last thing you want to do. This is when a tick bite becomes a serious health risk rather than an irritating itch. Think of tweezers as ‘tick squeezers’.

Myth 3: It’s only a scrub tick Don’t be deceived. Just because

Queenslanders might refer to them as scrub ticks, they are actually paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) and they don’t just inhabit the bush. They will happily hitch a ride on local wildlife such as your resident brush turkey, possum, bandicoot or snake and make themselves at home in your backyard.

Myth 4: You have to make sure you get the head out For starters, ticks are arachnids like spiders so they don’t have a head like an insect. What you might think is the head, is actually the barbed mouth parts it used to pierce the skin and attach itself. When these are left behind you don’t need to resort to a sewing needle to dig it out.

Just leave it as you might a tiny splinter, apply antiseptic and avoid making a bigger wound for bacteria to infect. The dangerous body of the tick is already gone and how you removed that is more important.

DID YOU KNOW? Samford Museum REMEMBERING LONG TAN AND VIETNAM VETERANS’ DAY On Tuesday 18 August, the Samford community will pause to mark Vietnam Veterans’ Day and the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, one of the most remembered Australian engagements of the Vietnam War. Many Vietnam veterans have made Samford their home, continuing a local tradition of service that reaches from the

world wars through Korea, Malaya, Iraq and Afghanistan. At Samford Grove Retirement Village, six residents deployed to Vietnam, while others served at home in essential support roles including training, logistics

and administration.

From 1962, almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam with the Army, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy. More than 500 died and thousands were wounded. At home, the war divided public opinion, and many who returned faced a lack of understanding and support.

In a defining battle which took place on 18 August 1966 in heavy monsoon rain at the Long Tan rubber plantation, 105 Australians from D Company, 6RAR, and three New Zealanders from 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery faced a much larger North Vietnamese and Viet Cong force. In mud, poor visibility and confusion, the small company held its ground in what became a defining moment in Australia’s Vietnam story.

D Company had left the Australian task force base at Nui Dat after Viet Cong mortars struck the base the previous night. Led

by Major Harry Smith, the patrol entered the plantation to locate the enemy firing positions. Instead, the soldiers encountered concealed positions and a far larger enemy formation than expected.

The 275th Viet Cong Regiment and D445 Battalion launched repeated attacks as rain turned the ground to mud and disrupted communications. Ammunition ran low and pressure on the platoons intensified. New Zealand and Australian artillery provided crucial support, firing thousands of rounds to break up the assaults.

Ammunition RAAF Iroquois helicopters from No 9 Squadron also flew through dangerous conditions to deliver ammunition near the front line. By early evening, D Company was under severe pressure, but reinforcements from B Company and M113 armoured personnel carriers reached the plantation at dusk, helping force the enemy to withdraw.

The battle came at a heavy cost: 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded.

Enemy losses were later recorded at at least 245 dead. Recognition of Long Tan was delayed by division over the war at home, but the battle now holds a prominent place in Australia’s military history. Vietnam Veterans’ Day honours all who served and reminds us of their sacrifice, resilience and service. Lest we forget.

CELEBRATING LOCAL MUSIC Two of our groups coming soon feature artists with local Samford roots and there is music for all tastes, from swing era jazz and classic song, to grooves of ska and reggae.

Thursday 20 August Melody Graves Quartet Hot jazz, blues and swing from the 30s and 40s, music steeped in old dance halls and New Orleans. This quartet of Brisbane’s favourite jazz musicians is led by vocalist and washboard player Paula Hackney (aka Melody Graves). They have played festivals, venues and jazz clubs across South East Queensland.

Thursday 17 September Kate B & Menaka Trio Singers’ Night Samford-based Kate B lives and breathes a life of song. Her music infuses eclectic styles on Celtic harp, guitar and ukulele beautiful folk songs and sweet melodies.

Kate is accompanied by Michael Grayson on bass and lead guitar.

Award-winning Indian-Australian singer Menaka draws on her heritage to write songs that seamlessly blend traditional Indian vocals with contemporary influences.

Festival appearances include Woodford, Queensland Multicultural Festival, Festival of Tibet, Brisbane Fringe, BrisAsia, and Women In Voice.

Thursday 15 October Seven of Ska Be ready for a blast. We love our own, and this group are a local success story. A Steiner graduate as frontman, two Highvale members and two who have taught music locally. Plus, a stage full of good vibes, a recipe for a great night out.

The Seven of Ska play a joyous repertoire of originals and hand-picked covers.

Inspired by the greats of reggae, they draw on influences from soul, rock & roll, roots reggae, a touch of jazz, Latin and funk. All held together with the grooves of ska.

We love the interior of our cosy little book shop, but are relishing the opportunity to get out into nature and among the community at the inaugural Pages in the Park, a new children’s book fair coming to Samford on August 22. We can’t wait to celebrate children’s stories with our community. Bring a picnic and a blanket, there will be lots of fun and activities for everyone.

While we are still waiting in anticipation for the final line-up to land, we can confirm that four friends of the shop will be there.

Having previously hosted local authors Jenni Guse, Bethany Loveridge, Emily Serow and Nick Mehaffy at the shop, we just know already that the afternoon will be a magical one.

Books for August Murder at the Hotel Orient by Ranelli Alessandra and The Children by Melissa Albert will be discussed on Tuesday August 11 and The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout has been chosen for Sunday Book Club, taking place on 30 August.

This little book has recently found itself on the Booker Prize long list which was announced at the end of July.

Boyle, dramaturg Julie Robson, set designer Sue Loveday, sound designer Mike Willmett, animator Andi Sparks, and tech designer Daniel Flood - have been rehearsing weekly at The Grove to build the show from scratch,

alongside a workshop and an installation that will go on display at The Grove once the workshop wraps up.

Next up: Sew Reel The Seamstresses have another exciting project up their sleeve. Their next project, Sew Reel, is a four-part online series with online production funding that tackles textile waste head-on, turning clothes we no longer need into something new and fabulous.

Right now, they’re on the hunt for sports jerseys and holey socks with a story behind them; the more everyday, the better.

STITCHED WITH MEMORY The Seamstresses are bringing Backstitch to The Grove. Samford Locals Emma Che Raethke and Sarah Whitehead, known on stage as The Seamstresses, have been developing a new work right here in Samford. They will be piloting this new show, Backstitch, at The Grove Retirement Village in late August.

Comedy BackStitch is a comedy about memory, care and the threads that connect us to the things we keep.

Polly and Esther go looking for discarded textiles and the stories stitched into them, then invite the audience to do the same: swapping memories. It’s a timely message in a world drowning in fast fashion and textile waste.

DAYBORO HISTORY KELLY BROS STORE The end of an era came on 15 April 1985 when the Dayboro Newsagency went to auction. That was 41 years ago. To many locals it was known as Kelly’s Paper Shop, but you could buy almost anything there.

John Kelly, his wife Margaret, and their three children arrived in Moreton Bay on the Duke of Buccleuch on 6 December 1887. He established a boot-making business in Fortitude Valley. In 1905 the family, which had grown to nine children, took up residence in the Orange Hall near the corner of Laceys Creek and Mt Pleasant Roads.

Bakehouse By 1912 John Kelly had built a small shop in McKenzie Street with a bakehouse at the back.

On 7 September 1925 the name of the shop was changed to Kelly Bros. John’s son Fred Kelly took over the business in 1928.

Some time later Fred decided to take on the daily paper delivery from Petrie to Somerset Dam, the construction of which commenced in 1935. Fred’s wife and nephew ran the shop while Fred did the paper run.

Street and Delaney Road was used for printing the Dayboro Times and Moreton Mail. On 23 May 1949, Kelly’s shop was moved across the road to the old printing shop which was extended.

Fred and his daughter Hazel ran the shop for a number of years and then Bill McKenzie joined the staff.

In 1968 Keith Kelly, Les Fealy (Hazel’s husband) and Hazel, purchased the shop.

TAKING APPOINTMENTS FOR:

Keith and Les owned Dayboro Garage at that time and the newsagency was run

by Hazel, Bill McKenzie and Jessie White.

When Keith and Les gave up the garage, Keith and Hazel ran the shop.

Fred Kelly died in 1975. Keith and Hazel continued to run the newsagency until it was transferred to Peter Hall from Samford on 15 June 1985.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED PINE RIVERS UPDATE Samford & Hinterlands Arts Trail & The Samford Show We’re so lucky to have some great events over the winter that bring so much joy. Creative Samford put on another fantastic Samford & Hinterlands Arts Trail.

This impressive, creative event just keeps growing, and there has been so much positive community feedback. Thanks to Creative Samford and the artists for putting your heart into this fantastic event.

The Samford Show was a huge success.

It was great to catch up with so many of you and see many locals at their own stalls. Thank you to the many volunteers who work tirelessly to put together this fantastic event.

Budget for Pine Rivers The Queensland budget was handed down last month. There was a lot we were fighting for in the Samford community, and I’m sad to say there isn’t much to report back. There is no new critical cost of living relief guaranteed for households.

At a time of intense global uncertainty and a national affordability crisis, this was disappointing. The state government showed that it’s not willing to do the work, claiming energy savings, that are entirely at the mercy of the regulator, and a promise of water bill relief, with no guarantee that it will be passed on to households by water providers. Legislation should have formed part of the budget and locked guaranteed savings in for our community.

I was fighting for universal cost of living relief, the Ferny Grove to Samford rail trail,

evidence-based solutions for hooning, housing solutions, increased disaster resilience funding and more healthcare and road upgrades for Pine Rivers.

No matter what, I’ll keep fighting for our fair share. It’s Teacher Aide Appreciation Week between 31 August and 4 September.

Teacher Aides play an important role in supporting students in the classroom with their education, and helping teachers create engaging learning environments. YOUNGS CROSSING REACHES CONSTRUCTION MILESTONE The much-anticipated upgrade of Youngs Crossing has reached a construction milestone, with the first of 83 pre-cast concrete girders now in place to support the new flood resilient bridge.

The Youngs Crossing upgrade is one of the biggest road infrastructure projects to be delivered in the City of Moreton Bay. Four-lane It will construct a new four-lane bridge west of the existing road crossing as well as three new signalised intersections and improved pedestrian and active transport connections.

The project spans more than 1km from Protheroe Road to Dayboro Road, with the new bridge being approximately 200m long.

The Youngs Crossing Road transport corridor is a critical link in the South East Queensland road network that currently experiences significant flood and congestion safety challenges.

BOOK REVIEWS THE DEATH ROW CLUB V.A. Vazquez Should the sins of a father be passed onto his progeny? If you like Crime Noir, then debut author Vazquez’s The Death Row Club is a hauntingly astute story about Nicola Fischer, the denigrated daughter of a serial killer. In the summer after her sophomore year, Nicola invites her best friend Claire Tenenbaum home, only to be mortified when she discovers a secret about her friend. She tells her very protective father. Claire disappears. Nicola researches as much as she can about her friend’s death.

Nicola’s life is ripped apart after the host of To Catch a Killer, Greer Woods, uses her research to identify her loving father as the Ellicott Creek Ripper, the killer of five women, including Nicola’s best friend.

He is arrested on Greer’s show.

Following her father’s conviction, friends, neighbours and teaching colleagues ostracise Nicola, believing she was an accomplice in Claire’s murder. She loses her job and turns to drink. A letter from Greer Woods invites Nicola to join the Death Row Club: An exclusive social club for the children of serial killers. Nicola accepts the offer to join their annual wilderness retreat, hoping to find like-minded people and some relief. Camaraderie turns to murder after an uninvited waif arrives and a retreat attendee disappears. Nicola, accused, is forced into a hunt for a killer while fearing she might be the next to die.

This innovative work has more twists and turns than the fibres in the noose of the hangman’s rope, betrayals galore, false leads and a chimera of a timeline that has you flipping back and forth to check whose story you are reading. It’s grisly and compulsive. Even if you are not a fan of Crime Noir, and I’m not, it’s worth the read to appreciate the cleverness of it.

DRIFT Pip Harry Harry’s sweet, YA verse novel Drift, is a great read for teens, especially reluctant readers. It enables readers to effortlessly buzz from page to page, experiencing all the Page 28 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 07 AUGUST 2026

BY JULIE MARTIN emotional depth of a full-blown novel. It deals with cyberbullying, mental health, the importance of bees and the curative effect of exercise in nature.

Nate’s parents bought an old cottage in an Australian seaside town to escape the bustle of Singapore, to settle Nate into an Australian high school and to prepare his mum Amber for an operatio. Nate’s dad stays in Singapore as Nate and Amber move in, but they are not the only ones who want possession of the house. 20,000 bees swarm into the walls. Amber wants to nuke them, but Nate pleads for mercy on environmental grounds.

Next door to Nate lives Luna, athletic, sensitive and understanding, who is returning to school after a long absence.

She helps him through the maze of his first school days, becoming a sort of friend.

While Nate has difficulty making new friends, he can’t understand why Luna is an outcast, even to her brother and her oncebest friend. With the help of local surfer and ace beekeeper Tyler and his girlfriend, Nate and Luna convince Amber the bees can be rehomed. The pair become enthralled with beekeeping, but in the shadows, threatening their growing friendship is a video and Nate’s promise to Luna. In that long summer, the pair have hopes blossom and wither, confront fears, and face the souldestroying effects of cyberbullying.

Perhaps it’s the teens’ bittersweet discomfit of building relationships, missing what once was and having to deal with uncertain tomorrows that makes Drift so appealing. It’s a great read for anyone between 12 and 120, even though it is technically for young adults.

GOOD PEOPLE Patmeena Sabit Good People is an addic tive haunting mystery that caters for those with “doomscroll” attention spans. It is written as a series of short testimonies, some only a few lines long, none more than a few pages. While it appears a light read, it is a serious commentary on how people’s perspectives on any public incident are coloured by their experience, their beliefs, their often self-serving past interactions with those involved in the event, their need to capitalise on any minor aberration that

might add juice to a story, the constraints of their employment and sometimes by the concept that free speech seems to grant the uninformed the right to have their say about everything. This is a novel to read blind without knowing much detail but not a novel to read alone. Discuss it with others because it worms into the deep recesses of your mind, making you see the world differently.

The Afghani Sharaf family are refugees who came with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, determined to achieve the Great American Dream. After years of hard work, they are successful, rich and apparently happy. They live in an exclusive neighbourhood; their children attend the most prestigious schools. Zorah, their beautiful, clever, eldest daughter, is the apple of her father’s eye. She balances precariously on the edge of her family’s traditions and expectations and the culture of her brave new world. An unthinkable tragedy involving Zorah thrusts the family into the court of public opinion.

We hear from family, friends, neighbours, teachers, schoolmates, journalists, the guy who found the body, those involved in the investigation (though very little from the police), and those in the wider community.

Bites of media commentary pick up on controversy rather than fact. A surrealistic picture slowly forms of a devastated family.

Versions of the tragedy are multiple and contradictory. Everyone has an opinion about what goes on behind closed doors.

The community turns detective, trying the grieving family by gossip rather than rule of law. Sharp revelations expose the societal divisions between the have and the havenots, and the recent-ish immigrants and a white establishment.

Though Patmeena Sabit never gives Zorah, her parents and her siblings a voice, we build a multi-faceted picture of their characters through the judgments, hints, contradictions, revelations, questions and verdicts of the many narrators. They feel real.

Their love for one another, their courage and resilience, as well as their fears, faults and tensions uncovered through half facts, narrators’ suspicions and condemnations, seem real. As the story sucks us in, we become complicit with the narrators and pass judgement. The energy of Sabit’s work is compelling, probably because she grew up as part of a migrant community. If you only read one book this year, make it this one.
