REFLECTION, PRIDE AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT ANZAC Day in Samford began long before sunrise, with volunteers arriving from 3am to dry off chairs, set up breakfast and prepare sound systems for the dawn service. As first light approached, it became clear the crowd was larger than expected. Even though the speakers strained to reach the edges of the gathering, the atmosphere was one of quiet respect and shared purpose. Kookaburras decided to help with the introduction from Peter Bates Brownsword, who delivered a heartfelt address that reflected his stage of life and long connection to service. His brother Harold supported him beautifully as the Bugler sounded the last post and reveille, adding depth and warmth to the moment. From there, the community moved to the memorial service at the Avenue of Honour, where George Scown, a past President once again brought strength and clarity to the proceedings, welcoming guests. The service started with two Tiger Moth biplanes swaying

slightly in the morning wind approaching from the east, while by chance, Brisbane’s F 18 thundered through a rainbow and dark grey clouds to the west en route to the city service - the contrast of the most modern with the most old. Storm clouds gathered as the service began, but they held off allowing the ceremony to unfold undisturbed - a small mercy that many quietly appreciated. The Samford State School Choir delivered one of the standout moments of the morning with their recital of Here We Lie. A soloist recited the New Zealand national anthem supported by the choir, followed by the full

choir closing with the Australian national anthem. The Second Wind Community Band captured the spirit of remembrance with grace and emotion. Brisbane North District President Mark Orreal was the guest speaker and complemented their performance with a thoughtful and fitting ANZAC address that resonated deeply with those in attendance. This year’s ANZAC Day was a powerful reminder of what makes the Samford community special: early morning dedication, shared remembrance and moments of beauty that arrive when least expected. It was a morning marked by pride, reflection and a sense of togetherness that will be remembered long after the rainbow fades. Paul Smith Secretary/Vice President Samford RSL SubBranch
