HONOURABLE RECOGNITION FOR LOCAL CARER

We congratulate Ronnie Benbow, Founder of The Carers Foundation Australia based in Cedar Creek, on receiving The Order of Australia in the General Division (OAM) in this year’s Kings Birthday Honours List, for service to the community.

“I received a letter from the Governor General’s offce in March to say I was being considered for an OAM, then the offcial confrmation arrived from the Attorney General on 25th May. It was a wonderful surprise and very hard to keep secret!” said Ronnie.

Ronnie has been an absolute champion of carers, particularly young carers, since she set up the foundation in 2015. Alongside husband Michael, Ronnie passionately advocates for unpaid family carers of all ages in the community, by providing unique health restoration programs to support emotional, physical and mental wellbeing at no cost to them. This in turn helps to avert health crisis breakdowns in carers from compassion fatigue.

In receiving this award, Ronnie is hoping it will raise more awareness for The Carers Foundation Australia and the unpaid family carers they support.

“Family carers are hidden members in our communities and they do not receive adequate support or recognition for the work they do behind the scenes,” she said. “Behind every person with a disability,

chronic illness, cancer diagnosis or mental health condition, there is usually a family member caring for them, some as young as eight years old.”

There are an estimated 2.8 million carers in Australia, with 533,200 Queenslanders (1-in-9). Carers are identifed as those who care for their family member with chronic illness, disability, mental health issue, aging, addiction or cancer conditions.

prevent health crisis breakdowns. Carers often forego their own health, giving up their entire lives to care for their loved ones. In fact, two out of three carers have a serious mental health issue and it has been proven that 30% of family carers can die before the person they care for.

“Some of these carers are teenagers caring for their mum, dad, brother or sister. These amazing children miss out on school, have no friends or family to help, have no time for their interests or hobbies and two out of three develop serious mental health issues.”

The Carers Foundation Australia is not government funded and relies on grants, donations, gifts and bequests to provide these essential, lifesaving programs.

You can support them by buying a ticket to their annual signature event, “Unsung Heroes” on 7th October at the Fortitude Music Hall. Eight incredible, high-profle businesspeople have committed to raising funds and will “sing off” at the fnale. Come along and hear The Coffee Club’s John Lazarou, Margaux Parker from Triple M, and local Samford hero Nat Nixon, to name a few.

The Carers Foundation Australia is the only charity in Australia that provides wellness programs - at no cost - to support the physical, emotional and mental health of family carers from the ages of 12, to

7pm start. All welcome. Further information: secretary@samfordprogress.org.au.

Dear Editor, I wish to thank two unknown gentlemen who assisted me in helping my elderly wife to her feet after tripping and falling heavily to the ground, due to bad alignment of the edge of the bitumen on the car park and pavers in front of Brumbies shop, just after 5.30pm (dark), on Thursday 1st June.

Having reported this serious accident (resulting with a black eye from a bump to the right temple and other injuries down the right side of her body, in addition to broken spectacles) to the attention of a Body Corporate member, I trust that attention to this dangerous situation will be rectifed quickly.

My sincere thanks to the two gents of the public who rushed forward to help.

Thank you both.

P&C MEMBERS FOR LIFE

An outstanding contribution to Samford State School since the 1970s has seen Ross and Janet Pickering, awarded life membership to the school’s Parents & Citizens Association. Ross and Janet are well-known around Samford not only for owning Samford Garage, but also for often being the frst to put their hands up to support community causes.

Ross and Janet’s three children Sonia, Melinda and Steve each went to Samford State School, with Janet taking on responsibility of the tuckshop during this time. Working with Anne Drake, Janet restarted the tuckshop in the 70s, putting in many unpaid hours to this much appreciated school service. The present tuckshop, which now operates fve days a week, owes much to the early work put in by Janet, Anne and later Heather Tadgell.

During the years her children were at Samford State School, Janet also volunteered her time to read with children experiencing reading diffculties.

The Pickerings were heavily involved in the running of the annual School Fete, as well as The Samford Charity Night; an annual event that brought the community together to raise funds for local charities, including Samford State School. This was a fantastic community event featuring top bands performing live to entertain Samford.

In 1973, Ross and Janet bought part ownership of Samford Garage and took full ownership in 1992. During their time at the Garage, they have been the RACQ service provider as well as being the early rural fre brigade during work hours, when most of the members were out of the area working.

As strong advocates of being part of a

vibrant community, Ross and Janet have consistently provided sponsorship and donations to community organisations and events including the Samford State School Fete, Samford Valley Steiner School, Ferny Grove SHS, Samford Riding for Disabled, Samford Golden Valley Pony Club, Samford Netball Club, Samford Rangers FC, C&K Samford Community Kindergarten, Farmers Hall, Samford Valley Target Archers, Christmas in The Park/Christmas on Main Street, and Samford Churches. They also provided gift vouchers to numerous raffes and fundraisers.

The Samford State School P&C wish to wholeheartedly thank Ross and Janet for their generosity, community mindedness and long standing support of the Samford State School Fete and other fundraising events. They refect all the qualities of what makes the Samford community great. In acknowledging their exceptional contribution to the school, the P&C also strives to encourage this sense of community-mindedness among present students.

Funny Fundraising

Putting the fun into fundraising, Samford State School P&C held its frst Comedy for a Cause evening on June 3.

Samford Farmers Hall turned into comedy central with performances from renowned funny people Lindsay Webb, Dave Eastgate, Sandeep Totlani and Joshua Coutinho.

Over 90 people doubled-over in laughter on the night, which was hailed as a sidesplitting success.

The event raised funds for new playground equipment at the school in order to keep the kids smiling too. The Samford State School P&C were extremely grateful to Samford Valley Meats and Drakes Samford for sponsoring the raffe on the night.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE FOR LOCAL JP

Samford Justices of the Peace in the Community celebrated one of their own recently when long time Samford resident Sandra Huelsmann was presented with a 25 year Distinguished Service Award. Sandra became a JP back in January 1994 and has been providing JP services to the community ever since. She commenced volunteering with the Samford JP site a few years ago and averages over 80 hours of service a year.

“Providing a JP service in your local community is a special way to assist people in a voluntary capacity. The work involves witnessing formal documents such as Statutory Declarations, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advanced Health Directives and many other legal documents,” said Sandra.

“As a JP, you become aware of the changing circumstances of families and how precious the lives and health are to the people who come for assistance. JP’s play a small part in the legal processes which accompany these changes. If you, or a family member, would like to contribute

your time in a meaningful way on a regular basis, (usually once a fortnight), please consider becoming a Justice of the Peace, especially at our local Samford Community Hub which is the most pleasant offce you could wish for. The JPs who work there are a special bunch. I am honoured to be

recognized for my voluntary contribution.”

Ange Fairweather

JP’s are available at the Samford Community Hub on Tuesday evenings 4pm – 7pm and Thursday mornings, 9am –noon. This is a walk-in service. No Bookings required.

Samford EcoCorridor links with our School

This term, as part of their local area mapping main lesson, students from Class 4 experienced an informative and fascinating creek walk with local Samford Eco-Corridor coordinator, Peter Storer. Walks to the local creek are a regular part of our school week, and Peter added another dimension by sharing his wealth of knowledge about the local fora and fauna. We encountered many bird species along the way, listening to their songs. After a walk and talk the children chose a tree to draw and write about. The children enjoyed learning about the uses of the different trees, both for humans and for animals, drawing and being in nature.

Here are some of their refections:

“During the creek walk I experienced some amazing things. I loved seeing the different shapes and sizes of the different shades of green. I learned a lot. Peter’s

knowledge was amazing the way he could identify different plants.”

“My favourite thing about this creek walk was that Peter told us on our walk what not to eat. For example, red berries are poisonous for you. Some unready ones could be poisonous especially yellow berries.”

“I was really interested in the foaming bark because when it rains it foams up at the bottom because it contains chemicals which can be used as detergent to wash things.”

“I liked how the trees and plants had different uses. I learned about what foods were safe to eat or not. I learned that the birds would eat the berries and seeds that we couldn’t eat.”

“I never knew that trees had names. I learnt so much! My favourite part about the nature walk was that I got to be in nature and learn a lot more than I expected about the environment and watching the birds singing was really nice, plus we got to learn how people before us survived with nature.”

Thankyou very much Peter Storer and

Samford Eco-Corridor for spending the morning with us. For more information about the Eco Corridor - Facebook: Samford Eco-Corridor.

June bushcare report

We had a solid turn out for our bushcare working bee on the beautiful afternoon of Sunday 11 June. Environmental Offcer Stefan brought along the new Council water trailer that holds 900 litres, which was just enough for us to water the plants on the upper bank, including 20 kindly donated by Geoff Maudsley and planted on the day. Our volunteers also weeded amongst the new planting, bagging some small madeira vine and glycine and pulling and dropping many other less critical weeds. We thank everyone who came along.

Afterwards, Karen Reid of the SDPPA brought along a nice spread for afternoon tea, which was enthusiastically consumed. Bob Millar

10 Year Cedar Creek Restoration Project with USC Begins

A local resident’s determination to mitigate the erosion and land loss caused by foods on his farm in Cedar Creek, led him to collaborate with a team of academic experts in soil management and environmental science. Through his initial research, Frank Pszczonka discovered a successful creek rehabilitation project in Kin Kin, QLD, where a like cattle farmer had experienced similar land loss issues and had worked with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and Noosa Landcare team, on a 10 year land rehabilitation project.

By leveraging the knowledge and experience gained from the Kin Kin project, Frank and the USC team embarked on a comprehensive restoration plan, combining advanced technology, vegetation and strategic engineering to stabilise the eroded creek embankment. To learn from the Kin Kin project, Frank arranged meetings with the university team and other collaborators, allowing him to see frsthand the strategies and techniques implemented in the creek rehabilitation project.

At the start of the project, the university researchers conducted numerous site visits to Frank’s farm, to map the different forms of embankment erosion and determine suitable remedial strategies along the creek.

“The project involved many visits to the farm by the researchers to determine which remedial options would be used to counter the different types of erosion,” said Frank. “I’ve lived on this property all my life, but climate change is having a dramatic impact

Inspired by their success in Kin Kin, Frank and the USC team began stage 1 in late April 2023, which involved signifcant tasks such as, trucking in over 250 cubic meters of clean fll, planting approximately 300 Riparian plants, and utilising different types of geo matting that aims to stabilise the soil, allow root systems to develop and prevent further erosion.

By installing different types of geo matting, the research team intends to compare and evaluate their effectiveness in holding the soil in place. Stage 2 gets underway in mid to late June.

Frank expressed his satisfaction with the university collaboration, acknowledging the expertise of the researchers and their efforts to tailor the project to address the specifc erosion challenges on his farm. Their dedication and collaborative approach provides hope for other farmers in

Closure of Busine

due to foods and climate change. It was Frank’s hope that a neighbour on the other side of the creek would join the project, but a dispute over fencing issues aimed at protecting the creek, as well as differences of opinion relating to the effectiveness of the project prevented this from happening.

“Merely leaving the embankment untouched for 10 years will not result in self-rehabilitation,” said Frank.

As the project progresses, ongoing monitoring and evaluation will be crucial to assess the effectiveness of the implemented strategies and make any necessary adjustments. Through their collective efforts, Frank and the university research team aim to create a sustainable and resilient solution that can withstand the challenges posed by future foods and protect the land necessary for grazing on Frank’s farm.

Young Entrepreneurs

If you’ve recently called out a plumber or attended a local yoga class, you may have noticed that Samford is home to a range of young entrepreneurs who have taken a chance on themselves and their ideas to start their own business. Over the next few weeks, we’re taking the opportunity to fnd out how some of our young locals are forging their own way in and around the Valley.

Carey Haden | Samford Valley Plumbing Service

the smash repair industry. I did a plumbing apprenticeship in my mid 20’s and really enjoyed the job, so I then decided to go further with it by getting my contractor’s licence and gasftter’s licence,” he said.

Finding a job he enjoyed has paid off, with Samford Valley Plumbing Service quickly gaining a strong reputation in and around the Valley.

“We have been receiving really great feedback from customers,” Carey said.

“Word of mouth advertising is so very important, especially in an area like the Samford region. It is a great feeling when a new customer tells us that they called us because they heard good reports from friends, family or neighbours.”

To keep up with demand, Samford Valley

Plumbing Service is investing in more equipment for high pressure water drain jetting and camera inspection gear. It is also growing slowly with an apprentice on hand to eventually add another ute to the group.

There is also another team member Carey credits for the successful day-to-day operation of his enterprise.

“While I get to be the known face of the business, it wouldn’t be running at all without the help of my partner, Leanne. She is the friendly voice that answers the phones, does scheduling and booking, QBCC contractor reporting and so many other administrative tasks that are so important to run smoothly. Thank you Leanne!”

Samford Valley Plumbing Service trucks can often be spotted on Main St heading from one blocked drain to another water flter installation job. Carey Hayden is the person behind the business, which he runs with his partner Leanne.

After Carey completed his plumbing apprenticeship in his mid-twenties, starting a business was a no-brainer for someone who had taken a chance on his own ventures throughout his teenage years.

“I have always had the urge to work for myself. As a young kid I mowed lawns and collected aluminium cans at the local footy. I started spray painting at 15 and started my own painting business when I was 21, which made lots of friends and no money!” Carey said.

“Plumbing has its own challenges, but it has presented the opportunity to be self-employed again with a bit more life experience and confdence to help it run well.”

During high school, Carey found he struggled to connect well with the school environment. He made the decision to leave after year 10 to start his work journey, trying different industries to fgure out what was right for him.

“I initially did a trade qualifcation as an automotive spray painter because I love cars, but never found job satisfaction in

Have you seen the new colourful mural on the wall of Community Bank Samford?

Creative Samford would like to give a big thanks to the bank for the commission to undertake the design and painting of this gift to the community.

After a few glitches, the fve artists consulted together and painted for many hours to create this wonderful mural. The mountain range and river fow through each panel and a leaf makes its journey from the river source to the Village and beyond.

The frst panel was to depict our indigenous past and was painted by Lauren Rogers, a young, contemporary indigenous artists with ancestral blood lines to the Ngarabal nation. Lauren is self-taught and began painting at a very young age. She says that art is a very important platform to share her culture with the wider community.

For her panel, Lauren chose to interpret the river as having pools of water which occur as the river runs bubbling down from the mountain range.

“The wattle is very important in Indigenous culture for food, medicinal purposes and frewood. The sky is depicted with clouds which often occur over the range and Valley. The rocks appear all around the river and Samford Valley,” she said.

Panel two was to depict our history – a diffcult task as it is rich and diverse. It was painted by Sean Leahy who many will know as a well respected cartoonist. This panel shows the beginnings of early white settlement and industry – cattle and dairy farming, banana growing, pineapple farms, timber cutting – as well as the early slab hut housing, the frst school and the horse drawn transport. It also includes the 1954 train crash.

Glen Pacholke depicted our local fauna beautifully in the third panel. His plan was

to capture some of the interactions between animals, usually unseen by us except in lucky feeting moments – birds harassing other birds; secretive animals operating in the dark or under logs or water – look closely, there’s a lot to take in.

“While putting a helmet on a magpie would have been more ironic, I can’t think of any animal that needs one more in Australia than the glorious bin chicken,” said Glen.

Tatiana Afonina’s colourful interpretation of our fora in the fourth panel had a focus on the eco-corridor. The native fowers in particular pop from the panel as well as the ‘pollinators’, the bees and butterfies.

“I thought about the importance of people’s work, who feel responsible for looking after that eco-corridor, revegetating the area and supporting new growth,” she said.

Fifth panel artist Marie-Ann Coyle was tasked with representing the present which of course changes all the time, so it captures a moment in time - our streetscape, historical buildings and landmarks.

Thank you to Craig English for the wonderful photos and the Long Yard Larder for the special food on opening night.

If you’re out on the Art and Open Studios Trail or having a coffee at the Larder, don’t miss taking a look at the mural as well. Creative Samford hopes to create many more murals in the Village in the future.

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB

Social Isolation and Loneliness

In Samford Valley, despite the efforts of many service organisations, small groups like Friday at the SCHUB, and friendly neighbours, there are lonely and isolated people. About a quarter of adults over 65 are socially isolated due to loss of family and friends, living alone, chronic illness, hearing loss, vision impairment and mobility issues. In rural communities, isolation occurs because neighbours are so far apart. Single parents and those living alone experience the highest rate of social isolation.

Social isolation — the lack of social connectedness — can lead to loneliness.

Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact. Nearly a third of adults over 45 acknowledge feeling lonely, which is associated with our climbing rates of depression, anxiety and suicide. Living alone or not being in a relationship are substantial risk factors for both social isolation and loneliness. Unemployment, receiving income support and fnancial crisis, contribute to the development of loneliness in adults. Loneliness can be self-reinforcing if associated with depression or anxiety.

Our community is immensely sensitive to social problems. Part of this problem is that many of the lonely and isolated can’t drive in an area where cars are a necessity. Volunteer drivers like those from Samford Support Network and Meals on Wheels partly address the problem but the need far outstrips driver availability.

A small community bus that could pick up folk for social outings might help alleviate this diffculty, but we face the problem of funding. The second conundrum is how we might help busy lonely single parents connect with community.

Do we need blue-carded, adopt-a-gran to babysit, so these parents can get out without the kids occasionally? Surely we can work out ways to help the isolated and lonely connect.

Friday afternoon at the SCHUB is community time. Everyone is welcome.

BOTANICAL ODD-BODS AND ECCENTRICS

Our next meeting on Tuesday 4 July in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start will see the much-anticipated return of Jo and David Roberts as guest speakers. Jo and David are former TAFE lecturers in horticulture and their talks are always very informative and entertaining.

Their upcoming presentation has the intriguing title of ‘Botanical Odd-bods and Eccentrics’ and will cover some unusual Gondwanaland plants with unique

adaptations and unusual strategies for ‘living their best lives’.

Visitors are welcome and attendees are encouraged to bring along labelled native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffe (bring a little cash).

LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARDED

At our June meeting, Peter Storer was unanimously voted life membership of the Samford Branch of NPQ. He was President for 17 years, in addition to holding several other Branch positions, and has enthusiastically promoted the use of native plants through regular articles in this newspaper and at local displays and events. His commitment to the development and ongoing maintenance of the Samford Eco-Corridor is also to be commended.

The fauna surveys that Peter organises to monitor the development of the site have shown how planting local native plants has increased the number and diversity of wildlife in the Samford Parklands.

Life membership of our Branch is our

acknowledgement of all the hard work and dedication Peter has shown towards the cultivation and conservation of Australian native plants over the past 3 decades.

Our June meeting also included Donna Farrell who described the landscape project work she and other Tree Huggers have been involved in at Woodfordia, a 500 acre property where the annual Woodfold Folk Festival is held. This has involved the planting of over 100,000 trees. The most recent addition to the property is Lake Gkula, a swimming area with sand beaches, wetland fltration and three waterfalls surrounded by native plants. Woodfordia now has 20 permanent glamping tents, surrounded by native plants, and an amphitheatre.

Many of the plants used around the lake and tents came from their nursery and display plants used at the folk festivals. You can learn more about Woodfordia and the Tree Huggers on their website (www. woodfordia.org).

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

MBRC LOCAL PROJECTS FOR 2023-24

This year’s 2023-24 Budget is all about improving the lifestyles of locals in Division 11, with a host of upgrades in the works for playgrounds and sports facilities as well as plenty of vital road, footpath and food recovery projects.

The budget will see a swathe of projects to cover the communities of Division 11 from Samford Valley and Mount Nebo in the south, up through Armstrong Creek to Ocean View in the north, Narangba in the east, and everything in between. Division 11 is one of the largest and most diverse areas of Moreton Bay, each community with their own unique demographics, needs and wants.

With so much growth coming to our great region, it’s important that we show the love to all of our communities, so they have the infrastructure, services and facilities they need to have a happy and healthy life.

We promised that Dayboro would be next in line for beautifcation works

and we’re delivering by reshaping and resurfacing 18,000m2 of turf and improving drainage at the Dayboro Showgrounds to bring it up to modern standards as an event space. Planning will begin to bring the Dayboro town centre up to modern standards too with a brand-new civic area that will include a new event space, picnic settings, play equipment, amenities and landscaping; and fnally design work will also begin for an overhaul of the skate park at Roderick A Cruice Park.

There are playground and park upgrades scheduled right across the region with works beginning on the massive new Samford Village Green space that will make Samford an even better destination to picnic and enjoy local events within the beautiful surroundings of the valley.

Andy Williams Park in Cedar Creek will get a much-needed new amenities block and water tank too.

Construction or planning will begin on roughly 3km worth of missing link footpaths and footpath renewals across Division 11, including an important 300m stretch along Winn Road, Mount Samson between Kundes and Andrew Roads to greatly improve safety for school kids at Mount Samson State School.

We’ve allocated $3.7 million for road resurfacing projects, and millions of dollars have been committed to many food recovery projects including major landslip repairs at Mount Brisbane Road, Mount Pleasant, Mayfeld Road, Samford Valley and the Goat Track.

There are plenty of gravel roads being sealed too including Wirth Road, Laceys Creek, Clifford and Rahes Roads at Mount Pleasant.

Mount Nebo Road will get much-needed Blackspot upgrades to two sections, which will greatly improve safety for locals who regularly use this road and tourists who are unfamiliar with the area.

This is just a snapshot of some of the work that is happening this fnancial year as part of the blockbuster 2023-24 Budget across Division 11 and I can’t wait to see it all rolled out.

Budget highlights for Samford and surrounds:

• $1,615,000: Road Resurfacing Projects - Mount Samson Road.

• $1,552,793: Mayfeld Road, Samford Valley - Landslip Repairs.

• $1,500,000: Village Green ProjectSamford Parklands.

• $750,000: Mount Nebo RoadBlackspot Road Upgrades.

WELCOME WORKERS

Samford RDA had a welcome visit this month from employees of Charter Hall, an Australian property development and funds management company, who swapped a day at the offce for working in the horse paddocks at Samford Showgrounds.

The shopping centre management team, based at Arana Hills Plaza, allocate two community volunteering days every year. They spent the day at Samford RDA chipping weeds, trimming trees and cleaning grazing areas – work that was greatly appreciated by the committed Samford RDA volunteers who maintain the centre and surrounding paddocks.

Samford Rural Fire Brigade

When is bushfre season?

Fire season in Queensland often begins in July and runs through until October, but can extend through to February. However, bushfres in Queensland can occur at any time.

These times can vary each year depending on the condition of local bushland, longterm climate conditions, and short-term weather events. The impacts of climate change are creating extended fre seasons that include higher temperatures with more frequent hot days, and increased fre danger across the State.

Bushfres move fast, can be highly destructive and pose a serious threat to life, property and the environment. It’s important you have a plan in place and know exactly what you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property. The frst step is to understand your level of risk to help you make informed decisions that are right for you and your family.

Is your property at risk?

All Queenslanders need to be prepared for bushfre. You don’t have to live in the

bush to be threatened by bushfres, just close enough to be affected by burning material, embers and smoke.

If you answer yes to any of the questions below, you are at a heightened risk of bushfre.

• Do you live within a few kilometres of bushland?

• Does your local area have a history of bushfre?

• Do you have trees or shrubs within 20 metres of your home?

• Do you live near scrub?

• Do you live on a farm or near paddocks?

Visit the QFES website at www.qfes. qld.gov.au and use the post code checker to see the bushfre potential in your neighbourhood. Is your home at risk?

Use the risk factor checklist to assess the vulnerability to your home in the event of a bushfre. Consider what changes you could make to your home to reduce your risk. The more boxes you tick, the more prepared your home may be.

Does your home have:

• Non-combustible exterior walls.

• Sealed roof ridge capping.

• Enclosed eaves.

BUSHFIRE SAFETY GUIDE

• An enclosed underfoor.

• Metal screen vents.

• Non-combustible window trimmings.

• Non-combustible deck or verandah. If frefghters need to access your property, does it have:

• Access route clear of overhanging trees.

• Access route clear of overhead powerlines.

• Unrestricted driveway access (gates can be opened without restriction).

• Room for large vehicles to reverse in (Approximately four metres wide).

• Turning or passing areas for large vehicles.

• Heavy vehicle access on cattle grids and bridges.

• Two-wheel drive vehicle access.

• An alternative way out for vehicles. Do you have accessible water supply:

• Reticulated water supply.

• Tank supply suitable for frefghter access-50mm male camlock ftting with shut-off valve.

• Accessible open water supply such as a dam or pool.

• Firefghting pump and hose connected to a water supply.

Samford Bowls Club

Friendship Day held on 6th June was a great success, our thanks to Samford Grove who sponsored this event. Some members brought their young adult grandchildren to join in on the day, others brought along a friend or neighbour and were also joined by some community members.

Friendship Days and our Come and Try Days are an opportunity to see if this game of lawn bowls is for you – they’re also free. Our next Come and Try event will be in a different format. We are planning on having it in early September on a Friday evening, with a BBQ followed by barefoot bowls. Those who can’t make it to the club because of work commitments but would like to have a go, this might be for you! You may like to get some mates together and join us. More info closer to the date.

Our Tuesday morning social bowls group got together with partners, friends and bowls club members for an enjoyable bus trip day out in the country on Monday 5th June. Everyone was at the club at 7.30am for an early start heading up over Mt Mee then on to Kilcoy. Not for bowls, (we did

drive passed the Kilcoy Bowls Club) but a day of sightseeing and friendship. Lunch at Woongooroo Winery Estate, some wine tasting, bush poetry and a bush band kept us entertained. Everyone is looking forward to the next one.

Don’t miss our Murder Mystery playTwas The Night Before Christmas – 23rd July commencing at 11.15am for a lunch with friends and an afternoon of sleuthing. Tickets on sale at the bowls club. $20pp Booking essential. Contact Desley: 0475 420 900.

Vale Meryl Laffn

We farewell long standing member, Meryl Laffn who passed away on 13th June. Members will remember Meryl as a quietly spoken lady who was a demon on the bowling green, winning many District

and Club competitions. She will be sadly missed.

IT’S SHOW SEASON

Poultry is a popular and very noisy section at Samford and other shows. Poultry farming for egg production and chicken raising is part of Samford districts’ rural history. Even if not the main focus of the farm’s production, it was traditional to have free range ‘chooks’ for the family’s supply of eggs and meat. Some poultry farmers mentioned in Samford Reminiscences Vols 1-6 and unpublished are Campbells, Corderys, Reiners, Curtis, Hallams, Slawson, Moore and Banks. Gleam O‘Dawn, The

Good Egg and Highvale Traders were all well-known poultry farms along the road to Highvale.

Moores, of today’s Boland Court area, during the late 1940s-1953 raised chickens for meat, selling dressed birds by order to mainly butcher shops.

Mr & Mrs Banks of Bunya, in the vicinity of today’s Blue Hills Dr/Songbird & Rainbird Crts, reared poultry, selling dressed birds in the 1960s.

Slawsons of Camp Mt had poultry and chickens. Tom Hart was an employee. Campbells, followed by Corderys, poultry farmed for egg production until 1952. Reiners brought their eggs to Campbells from where they were taken to Roma Street.

K H Curtis, his wife and family at one time stocked approximately 5,000 free range laying hens on their farm at Cedar Creek. Hallams of Mt Glorious took their eggs to the Egg Board at the Normanby.

At Gleam o’ Dawn, the Gillies tried to make extra money at Christmas by rearing and fattening two hundred cockerels for the abattoir. The last day the abattoir would pick them up it was agreed would be 23rd December at 10am. “The shed seemed to be quiet, and, on opening the door, not one rooster could be seen. All gone – stolen! We became the frst and only poultry abattoir in Samford. Later we opened a small shop and sold eggs, poultry and vegetables….” by Clem Gillies.

Poultry and other Samford industry stories and photos are welcome by members of the Samford Museum, as we continue to collect and preserve Samford and surrounding districts’ history.

For further information please email info@ samfordmuseum.com.au or call Geoff 0417 610 983. Museum open Wednesdays and Sundays 10am-4pm. $5 adults, $1 children.

Over the two days of the Show, the Junior members will be wearing distinctive shirts and rosettes around the Showgrounds when busy on offcial tasks. Adults Art and Craft

Under the watchful eye of Principal Nicole Collins and Deputy Principal John Mauch, the junior cohort has entered into the spirit of the Show with all the tremendous enthusiasm that 11 and 12 year-olds can muster. As well as having the four school captains take on the major task of writing speeches to offcially declare the Show open at midday on Saturday 15 July, the Junior Committee has been busy planning to take over the main arena a little after midday on Sunday 16 July, for fun events that will be a feature of day two of the Show.

Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton has offered to co-sponsor prizes for the

Several Aged Care Facilities also enter and compete for the Aged Care Facility Trophy.

As an extra incentive to enter, we have cash prizes again this year, thanks to Nikki Boyd MP, Cr Darren Grimwade and Bellevue/Roshana Care Group, who have all generously donated to the Adults Art and Craft section of the Show.

Cost of Living Impacts Children’s Education

The Brendale Evening VIEW Club is urging the local community to give generously to The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal this year, to support thousands of children and young people with their education.

CEO of The Smith Family, Doug Taylor, said families are having to make impossible decisions about where they spend their limited funds. This could mean paying for school essentials or paying for a meal on the table. The education charity is aiming to raise $6.2 million nationally to give over 14,000 children across Australia access to its proven learning and mentoring programs.

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is the largest community sponsor of students within The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. Members of the Brendale Evening VIEW Club support

• Secondary amenorrhea. (missing of 3 or more menstruation cycles)

• Rapid weight loss and extremely low body fat.

• Eating disorders and fxation with diet and exercise.

• Depression and anxiety.

Our psychologists and psychiatrist are experienced, caring and supportive with approaches taliored to suit the individual client.

• Low iron reduces oxygen supply to our muscles and reduces the capacity to perform at a high level.

• Reduced hormone levels increase the risk of stress fractures.

How to Treat RED-s?

• Engage with a sports dietitian to manage and address dietary factors.

• Exercise Physiologists help build strength and manage programming to prevent future injuries.

• Physiotherapist to manage load and treatment of any injuries.

• Doctor to guide treatment and complete any required medical assessments.

Zonta club wins Pine Rivers Queensland Day Award

The Zonta Club of Pine Rivers has received a Pine Rivers Queensland Day award by Nikki Boyd MP, State Member for Pine Rivers. The awards are a new initiative to recognise local individuals and groups who go above and beyond for the community.

The club is a member of Zonta International, a global organisation that works to build a better world for women and girls.

Club President Bronwyn Evans said she was delighted to hear the club had been selected to receive the award. “We are a small club comprised entirely of volunteers and I’m so glad the work by our members has been recognised through these awards,” she said.

At a local level, the Zonta Club of Pine Rivers provides hampers and other donations to CADA (Centre Against Domestic Abuse) at Strathpine to support those who’ve escaped violent home situations. Its members also make breast care cushions and drainage bags for those who’ve undergone breast cancer surgery.

Zonta recognises the importance of education in empowering women and

girls and funds an annual $2000 bursary at University of the Sunshine Coast (Moreton Bay) to help a female student with study related costs. Members also work with high schools to assemble kits for Birthing Kit Foundation Australia, providing a clean and safe birth experience for those in remote regions of the developing world.

Advocacy is an important part of the club’s mission and it works with other Zonta clubs in Brisbane to campaign against gender-based violence.

“We actively participate in the international Zonta Says NO campaign,” explained Bronwyn. “You’ll often see us wearing our orange Zonta Says NO polo shirts and we also use our social media channels to raise awareness. During November-December we take part in the global 16 Days of Activism and it’s during that time that you may have seen our orange banners hanging on Council posts in local parks.”

The club raises funds for their projects through Bunnings sausage sizzles, raffes and events, including their popular International Women’s Day brunch held in March.

Members currently meet monthly at the Kakowan Community Facility in Bunya. New members are always welcome. If you’d like to know more about the club or are interested in joining, email pineriverszonta@ gmail.com.
