Samford Arts Trail starts this weekend

GLAMOROUS RUNWAY DELIVERS FOR CARERS

A REWARDING LOOK BEYOND FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Like many young women her age, 21-yr-old Samford Valley local, Sinead Skorka-Brennan dreamed of finding the perfect job. One that would build her confidence but also give her independence and job satisfaction. In a world where preconceptions about disability are still an issue, she was finding employment opportunities really difficult to come by. You see, Sinead is a young woman with Down Syndrome and because of this, she is often treated like a child, instead of a young adult.

Anticipation is building for the Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios, commencing this weekend and continuing for the next four weekends in June. Thirty five local artists will display their talents throughout the Samford Valley, Samford Village, Yugar through to Warner, Cedar Creek, Clear Mountain and Dayboro. Join the talented artists and artisans for a great day out (or several!) in our beautiful region.

The Carers Foundation Australia held a Glamorous Runway Show Luncheon featuring the fashions of Queensland’s Queen of Couture, Sonia Stradiotto Couture, at the Emporium Hotel Ballroom in South Brisbane on 23 March.

Attended by 220 beautifully dressed guests (with many more on a wait list) and hosted by Damien Anthony Avery Rossi and Channel 9’s Melissa Downes, the event’s aim was to raise vital funds for The Carers Foundation so they can continue their incredible work.

You can pick up a Studio Guide (which includes a map) from the Slab Hut in Samford, Information Centres and selected retail outlets in the area, or head to www. creativesamford.com/2019-arts-trail/ for a downloadable digital version. The Guide features the artists exhibiting in the Trails, as well as a great range of workshops on offer for you to enjoy.

Ironically, Sinead is an accomplished gymnast, having represented Australia at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March this year, bringing home four medals, two of them gold in bar and beam events. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Dickson Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. You would think these achievements alone would open doors for her – but unfortunately not.

Guests enjoyed champagne, a delicious lunch and a stunning parade and were delighted to hear from Sonia who was joined by fashion doyenne Di Cant OAM for a conversation about her designs. The event was attended by Brisbane’s Lady Mayoress and Carers Foundation Patron Nina Schrinner and Gold Coast Mayoress Ruth Tate, with entertainment by Lisa Lockland Bell.

For the first time this year, the Arts Trail will be working with MBRIT and Mountain Wine Tours to offer a ‘Wine and Art’ bus tour. This will be a great day out with wine tasting and food experiences, while enjoying a great variety of local art. Tours can be booked on the Mountain Wine Tours or Creative Samford websites.

One of the artists featured this year is Danielle B Latta, owner of Running Duck Studio in Dayboro. This year, Danielle is undertaking an Endangered Project, whereby artwork will be created to draw attention to the plight of many animals

“Ever since Sonia became our valued Ambassador, she has worked tirelessly in honour of her beloved mother Marietta to support our carers, raising an incredible $75,000 just from this event,” said Carers Foundation Co-Founder and Managing Director Ronnie Benbow. (pictured right with Sonia). “Sonia has now raised more than $140,000 - we are so grateful.”

Enter the award-winning and critically acclaimed ABC documentary series Employable Me, which followed the stories of nine people with disabilities as they battled to find work. The documentary, which was aired in April, aimed to show potential employers the capable people behind their condition and highlight the importance for people to feel valued. Throughout the series, participants worked with experts, job coaches and their families to uncover their skills and talents and match them to roles that harnessed their strengths.

Sinead hoped to work in aged care with the goal of improving the lives of those she cared for. Taking steps toward her goal, she completed a Certificate 3 in Aged Care and was looking for an employer to give her a chance. That employer was Anglicare Symes Grove, where Sinead secured a parttime role, helping residents with their daily needs two days a week.

While the Runway Show was a highlight, so too was Ronnie, who gave a moving speech highlighting that, “At a time when carers need more support, the past 2 years has been particularly difficult since the Foundation receives no government funding.”

“The aim of the Foundation is to prevent health crisis breakdowns in unpaid family carers due to the extreme stress, anxiety, loneliness and mental fatigue they face daily. Many carers are teenagers and children,” said Ronnie.

in the wild - from beautiful big lions and elephants to the smalls of our very own endangered pygmy possum, the variety and numbers are overwhelming. As an artist, Danielle finds herself looking a lot deeper into every aspect of her surroundingsvisually, spiritually and emotionally. Drawing from these observations allows her to connect with the viewers of the resulting artwork. Danielle will donate a portion of the sale of artworks sold from this collection, to the corresponding animals’ preservation fund, in your name. Danielle’s studio is Number 23 in the Arts Trails booklet.

Carers, some as young as eight-years-old, are experiencing high levels of stress and mental illness as a result of their unpaid

“I make cups of tea and coffee and serve meals and drinks. I feed someone if they can’t feed themselves. I help with activities like craft or physio classes, take residents for walks, or push someone in a wheelchair or wheelie bed so that they can participate in special activities, for example in a concert. I will also run activity programs in the future,” said Sinead.

caring role. The Carers Foundation Australia provides wellbeing programs from its Cedar Creek retreat at no cost to carers. For many, this is the only break they get from roundthe-clock caring responsibilities, which leaves many carers under severe mental anguish.

Asked what she liked most about her job, Sinead said, “I like helping other people. That is why I had the idea to work in Aged Care already since High School. I find it most rewarding when I am able to make the residents happy and can help to make their lives a little bit easier. I find it very rewarding to get to know each resident and know what their needs are and how they like something done. It makes me happy when they are happy.”

numbers increasing every year,” she said. The trails will run from 10am to 4pm over the first four weekends in June, with the fifth weekend playing host to some great workshops. This is your chance to get your friends together and enjoy a great day out in the country.

For more information, see the Creative Samford Website, keep up to date on Facebook www.facebook.com/ samfordartstrail, or contact Ann Russell at trails19@creativesamford.com.

It is estimated that unpaid family carers save the government up to $86 billion annually. The incredible generosity from this event will make a significant difference, enabling more carers to access counselling, wellbeing programs, vouchers for essential items such as food and fuel, plus healing therapies to restore their health.

The Foundation has hosted hundreds of carers for one and three day wellbeing programs, specialising in evidencebased health practices for unpaid family carers.

“Carers arrive at the retreat completely burnt out, incredibly stressed and often even suicidal,” Ronnie said.

Feedback from carers who have attended a retreat show that after three days of rest, massage, yoga, conversations and other specialty counselling, they leave having made long-lasting friendships and with resilience tools to help them cope in their caring roles.

The first weekend of March saw the Samford State School Interschool Equestrian Team compete at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre (QSEC). Frankie Corkery and Charlie Hatfield represented Samford State School in show jumping and combined training. When asked, Frankie and Charlie said that they were proud to be the first students to compete under the Samford State School emblem for many years. They are looking forward to competing throughout the year and thanked their parents for the opportunity.

Deputy Principal, Trish Bennell-Kling, said, “We are incredibly impressed with Frankie and Charlie. They managed to win one 1st and three 3rd placings. I would like to thank both the Hatfield and Corkery families for their support of our school and Interschool Equestrian. We look forward to our team growing too.”

Kids stage a takeover of the Samford Show!

In another first for the Samford Show, planning for the 2023 Show will be a joint undertaking for the Show Society and a Junior Show Committee of students from Samford State School.

According to School Principal Nicole Collins, this is a great innovation that gives local children the chance to work with trusted adults, learning how to plan and manage a major event in their own community. The main focus this year will be on special events and exhibits at the Show for students from the School, ranging from arts and crafts to fun competitions. It will involve developing project plans, competition rules and judging, running events and generally being embedded in one of Samford’s most cherished annual events.

P&C President Jo Harris confirmed parental support for the idea. “When Terry came to us with the proposal, we could immediately see the benefits. We live in a wonderful community, and this is one way to get our kids to appreciate what they have and to contribute to their future,” she said.

Show Society President Terry Hogan sees this cooperation as a natural extension of the decision by the Show Society a few years ago to invite the school captains to open the Show, which is now an established local tradition.

“Basically, the Show is about kids, so kids should have a say in what it offers. It’s a great learning opportunity, not just about planning something big, but how important it is to become involved in their community to the best of their ability. For the Show Society and other volunteer groups, we’re engaging the next generation of community leaders,” said Terry.

Sounds like another great Samford Show is planned. Don’t miss it – Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July. Tickets available soon. www.samfordshowsociety.com.au

Easter Memories

‘Father O’Donoghue, Parish Priest of Enoggera Parish 1934-c 1952, came to Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Samford monthly. He lead the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday and said Easter Mass.’ from Sacred Heart Church Samford 1896-1996compiled by Dorothy Stevensen 1996

An Easter childhood memory - Yvonne and Valmai Currell’s enjoyment was to put the crosses on the hot cross buns in their fathers’, HB and AB Currell, Samford bakery. The bakers made dough into long strips. The girls cut and placed the strips atop the buns After cooking, a mix of sugar and water was made to glaze the finish. These were produced just for Good Friday not for weeks ahead as happens today.

CAN YOU HELP THE MUSEUM?

In a recent Village Pump, we published an article and picture of this train trip (above) from about 100 years ago, of the Samford banana growers’ excursion to Toowoomba, which featured in the Daily Mail, 10th February 1923 paper. Some of the travellers have been identified.

Does anybody have an original or a copy of this photo to help in identifying more of the passengers?

The passengers were mostly local farmers. Mr. Robinson, the head teacher at Samford School, is standing in the doorway, with Tom Richards in the light grey suit on the ground below him. The rail motor is a McKeen, made in America and put into service in Qld in 1913. They were petrol powered, not steam.

If you can help, contact the Museum or Geoff Harris on 0417 610 983.

THANK YOU GREG

It is with great sadness we announce that due to unforeseen circumstances our President, Greg, has had to resign his position. We wish to thank Greg for his dedication, hard work and tireless contributions over the last 6 months. We would like to assure our clients, members and the wider Samford community that the remaining Management Committee members are committed to working together to maintain our services to support our local community.

AN OPEN LETTER

From Greg Goad (Immediate past President Samford Support Network).

To Friends, Members and Clients of the Samford Support Network (SSN).

Thank You

Thank you to the friends and supporters of the SSN, those marvelous community groups, individuals and commercial

organisations who have contributed to the SSN in so many ways, a special thanks for everything you have done in support of your community.

Thank you to the members of the SSN, those absolutely fantastic volunteers who give so freely and generously of their time and services to help others within our community. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly into your midst, and for electing me to represent you as President at last year’s Annual General Meeting last October. It’s been an exciting ride.

Thank you also to the clients of the SSN, for providing the SSN an opportunity to serve you in so many ways. You are the sole reason and purpose for the SSN’s existence.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have been chosen to serve you, and it is an experience that I will long remember. Unfortunately, as is the case with all good things, they must come to an end. I have developed a bit of a health condition that needs a somewhat concentrated effort to address. So without further ado, I bid being your President adieu.

But before I leave I would like to acknowledge, compliment, commend and thank the Management Committee for, not only their friendship, but also for their perspicacity, resilience and abundance of energy and boundless enthusiasm for the work they have done, and continue to do, to guide the SSN, a 100% volunteer managed and operated organisation, as it continues to provide essential support and service to the local community.

I wish you all every success for the future, and may your lives be filled with joy, happiness and a sense of accomplishment. Gg

What is a Dental Implant? What is a Dental Implant?

March fun began with our International Women’s Day Morning Tea. Special guest was pilot Rebecca Hawkins who flies 737’s and Triple 7’s. We just loved her passion for flying any type of aircraft, especially the big jets. Her future was stamped when, as a young child, she just loved the thrill of watching planes and the smell of the fuel.

Our third Wednesday of the month meeting was great too, with guest speaker Mr Rob Reed. He grows dragon fruit (Pitaya) and from the taste, he grows them very well. Did you know there are over 70 varieties of this fruit and it is actually a cactus? Thanks Rob for the taste samples and for testing our guessing skills of red or white inside the fruit. Thanks also for sharing some of your cuttings.

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB

A Question Of Honour

On Friday 31 March at 3.30pm, Jenni will lead us in a timely discussion about the many perceptions of HONOUR at the Good Stuff Ideas Forum. Nelson Mandela, South African anti-apartheid activist, said ‘honour belongs to those who never forsake the truth even when things seem dark and grim, who try over and over again, who are never discouraged by insults, humiliation and even defeat’. Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States said, ‘no person was ever honoured for what he received. Honour has been the reward for what he gave’.

Do these perceptions of honour represent all of what honour is? Are there other views that can further enrich our concepts of honour? Come and join us as we flesh out this fascinating topic.

On Good Friday, 7 April, our Cuppa and Chat will not be open. Samford Scribblers has been postponed until 14 April at noon, the Crafting Kindness starts at 2.00ish and Cuppa and a Chat will be back and buzzing then too.

CWA is selling very lovely tea towels too for this study of primary product. (pictured)

ANNOUNCING OUR BIG NEWS!

A lot has happened in the last few months! Our journey to establish a community garden on the old carpark at Cash Ave, Samford Village has come to an end. After almost two years of working to secure the site, we reached a hurdle we were unable to surmount. However, as gardeners we are a resilient bunch. As one door sadly closed for us, another one opened.

I am so pleased to announce we have secured a new location, close to the village, and full of potential! We are incredibly privileged to be setting up base on a small section of land at Millen Farm - the area of fertile land that Arran Heidemann has

farmed, cared for, nurtured and cultivated for the last 6 years. On the back of his hard work, we as a community will have the privilege of growing in this space.

The Samford Community Garden @ Millen Farm will be a combination of some individual plots, as well as shared areas where we plan to grow some low maintenance easy crops and a community orchard.

Sounds pretty amazing right? Wondering how to get involved? I’m glad you asked.

Our working group is still in place, however, there is always room for more. If you have time to dedicate to this project over the next two months, we would like to hear from you.

But do not fear, if you don’t have the time to be actively involved right now, there will be ample opportunity for you to engage very soon! We anticipate a couple of working bees over the next few months and are planning for an open day over the weekend of 20th and 21st May.

The best way to stay in the loop about how to get involved, open days and new opportunities, is to sign up to our newsletter - samfordcommunitygarden.com.au.

I hope that you are all as excited as we are at this opportunity we have to bring the Samford Community Garden @ Millen Farm to life. It will certainly be the culmination of a dream of many, many people.

Empowering Young Locals Through Defensive Driving

Community Bank Samford - Bendigo Bank, recently revved its engines at the Bank’s annual Defensive Driving course, equipping local young drivers with the skills to anticipate dangers on the road and hone their reactions.

The course took place at the Lakeside Raceway, Kurwongbah, where participants experienced slamming on the brakes in puddles and wearing thick-bottle glasses to understand how our senses are impacted when alcohol is involved. Attendees also experienced the real impact of looking at their phones while driving.

The hands-on program is designed to teach the importance of safe and smart driving. It provides a unique chance for participants to experience driving in difficult conditions whilst in a secure environment.

Young driver Zac Panagiotopoulos attended the latest Defensive Driving

Course, walking away with a number of tips that have empowered him as a safer and more confident driver.

“I enjoyed the day at Lakeside Raceway where we were able to practice our car handling abilities on a wide range of obstacles and road conditions to further develop our driving skills,” Zac said.

“The interaction with the instructors, Huddo and Jack, made for a relaxed learning environment on the track whilst the in-house training was well presented by Ian (with a few laughs to keep everyone engaged),” he said.

“I have already recommend this driver training for 2023 to my brother who is on his L’s and will be moving onto his P’s during the year.”

The program called upon specialist trainers from across the driving spectrum. This included ex-police officers and ex-paramedics with real-life experience in responding to the aftermath of horrific accidents. Their first-hand accounts and advice brought a depth of experience to the training that resonated with each attendee.

This is the 11th year Community Bank Samford has organised the Defensive Driving initiative, emphasising the value that the company sees in this important program designed to help protect young drivers as well as the wider community.

Anyone interested in the next course scheduled for December 2023 is encouraged to get in touch with the branch now to add your name to the waitlist.

HEALTHY BOOTIES WALK FOR CANCER

Did you know 20,428 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year? Sadly, that number continues to rise.*

These smiling faces above wanted to do something about it so they participated recently in the International Women’s Day Fun Run to support women with breast cancer. Organised by Bindy Caulfield, her team of 26 Healthy Booties members, family and friends (plus a few dogs) set off from John Scott park, walking the loop past the Avenue of Honour, under the new bridge and back past the Community Hub to the village. They enjoyed a well earnt coffee afterwards and were very proud that their efforts raised $1600 for Mater Foundation. Awesome effort!

NATIVE PLANTS MARKET THIS WEEKEND

A final reminder that our Autumn Plants Market at the Samford Showgrounds will be open from 9am on Saturday 1 April. Get there early for the best selection from a huge range of native plants at reasonable prices (see list at npq.org.au). Expect queues at busy times.

Our next meeting on Tuesday 4 April in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start will feature Francis Rigby who will explain the trials and tribulations of growing Finger Limes commercially. He will detail how the farm in Closeburn came about, the infrastructure involved and his plans for the future.

We encourage attendees to bring along labelled native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash) while socialising.

Our AGM in March was a great success, with a new team of key office bearers kindly

stepping up to ensure the smooth running of the branch. All other positions were also filled on the night (so it is ‘safe’ for other members to return).

After the formalities, Angie Fairweather enthralled the audience with a practical demonstration of how to set up a terrarium using native species. The base of the terrarium comprises decorative stones and pebbles, which are covered by the allimportant layer of activated charcoal that keeps everything fresh. A layer of sphagnum moss is used to hold water and the plants are planted in a blend of sterilised potting mix and perlite.

Finally, moss is added for aesthetic appeal and everything is watered with demineralised water. If set up correctly, the terrarium won’t need to be watered again for at least 12 months: it becomes a selfsustaining environment. We thank Angie for sharing her knowledge and skills.

SAMFORD & SURROUNDS ARTS TRAIL & OPEN STUDIOS

Artists and artisans from Samford to Dayboro are painting, potting, sculpting and letting their “artistic juices flow” as they build their collection for the upcoming Samford & Surrounds Arts Trail & Open Studios.

Artists throughout the region throw open the doors of their Art Studios or exhibit in “pop up” Art Spaces every weekend across June, bringing hundreds of visitors to the region.

Some artists, like Deb Pettigrew from the Good Egg Gallery in Samford have been involved in the Trails for many years while Mike White, a modern impressionist, will re-join the Trails family for the first time since 2016.

Deb will exhibit her own eclectic works at the Good Egg Gallery, which will also be home to textile artist Lucie Verhelst and Jenni Meek, a mixed media artist.

“I love being involved in the Trails produced by Creative Samford every year as the event brings so many people together to look at all the art,” Deb said.

Mike White was involved in the Arts Trail in just its second year in a solo Exhibition. Now in its ninth year, Mike said a combination of factors made him feel this was the time to re-join the Trails family.

“Every year I considered it, but it was just never possible. This year everything fell into place and the combination of a really good Art Space and terrific artists

to exhibit alongside has really excited me. I like painting “large” and I like my work to recreate the feeling of the scene I experienced, usually in bright colours and contrasts.”

“I am really proud to be part of the local Arts community and the Trails is a great way to meet people, both other artists and visitors. It really gets your art out there and it’s a great way to connect with the community,” Mike said.

Mike is one of seven artists who will be exhibiting at St Pauls Anglican Church Hall on Mt Samson Rd, Samford.

The Samford & Surrounds Arts Trail & Open Studios runs from Samford to Cashmere and Eatons Hill, from Clear Mountain to Dayboro. Studios and Art Spaces are open every weekend in June from 10am to 4pm or by appointment. Visit www.creativesamford.com or email trails@ creativesamford.com for more information.

Food gardening tipsApril

As we move into April, humidity and temperature will drop, as well as night temperatures. This opens up potential for a large number of vegetable and herb crops to thrive from Autumn to Winter. Here is a list of my favourite vegetables and herbs to plant during April, along with some helpful tips on how to grow them.

Ideal to plant are:

• Sugarsnap and snow peas – Use climbing variety.

• Kale, silver beet, lettuce and Asian greens – Cooler times reduce

cabbage moth visits.

• Carrots, beetroot, garlic and red onion – Plant densely, direct seed carrots and garlic. Okay to plant are:

• Climbing beans – Purple king beans are my favourite.

• Cucumber – Plant early in month and make sure it’s full sun.

• Strawberries – Inter plant with leeks or spring onions to reduce slugs.

In our Gleanr planting calendar, you will discover an additional 80 vegetable and herb crops that are suitable for planting during the month of April in our local climate. Detailed growing instructions are provided for every crop including tips to deal with pest and diseases and companion planting.

Growing food in the month of April gets easier compared to the previous 4 months. Key things to consider are:

• The sun dips to the north in its east west path from Autumn to Spring, so it’s very important to have as much open access to the north sun as possible.

• As it’s more the time of planting Brassica crops, inter plant them with coriander - it helps to keep the cabbage moth away.

• Use the best compost you have or highest quality liquid manure to plant out your seedlings.

Lifting plant vitality is the number one priority. This is a combination of your garden design, soil management, planting in season, choosing healthy planting stock, sufficient watering and your attitude to life in the garden. To further improve plant vitality, plant on ideal planetary days. Such days are integrated into the Gleanr planting calendar.

For more resources on having a thriving food garden, visit the Gleanr platform at www.gleanr.com.au, providing:

• Tip sheets, videos and images on how to create and manage food gardens in the Toolshed.

SAMFORD’S FLORA GYMPIE NUT

(Macadamia ternifolia)

This small evergreen rainforest tree to about 6m is also known as the Small-Fruited Queensland Nut. It is endemic to South-East Queensland, with a limited distribution from Mt Nebo in the south to around Kin Kin just north of Gympie and inland to the Blackall Ranges. It is listed nationally as Vulnerable (it is one of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s priority species for conservation). It can be found on volcanic soils, but locally it mostly occurs in gallery rainforest remnants on alluvial flats.

The Gympie Nut has glossy leathery leaves in whorls of three that are narrowoblong, tapered to a sharp point and irregularly serrated. The showy soft young growth after rain is orange-pink or red. The pedulous clusters of pale pink or white flowers occur in late winter or spring and attract a wide variety of beneficial insects, including stingless bees.

The flowers are followed in late summer by small nuts in hairy green cases. Unlike the better known cultivated macadamias, M. integrifolia and M. tetraphylla, the nut is inedible/poisonous (it contains cyanide). This macadamia is a butterfly host plant for several species of blue butterflies.

This is a hardy tree that will perform well in most soils. It is relatively slow growing in full sun or semi shade and benefits from mulching. This is a valuable tree for wildlife, providing shelter, food, nectar and nuts.

Locally, specimens are found at Mt Nebo and within the gallery rainforest remnant at Days Road West Reserve in Wights Mountain. Young trees planted at the Samford EcoCorridor in 2014 flowered for the first time in September 2022 and recently produced nuts (see photo), which are now being used for propagation of

Samford Area Mens Shed

When a person thinks of the Mens Shed movement, visions come to mind of men tinkering away in a workshop-like shed environment working mostly with wood and metal and doing all kinds of handicrafts. A person may also think of a Mens Shed as a place where men can slip inside a “man cave” to get away from the world and the wife and kids for a while and talk “man stuff”.

To a certain degree, that may be true, but the Mens Shed movement offers more than that. If offers a place where men can gather in fellowship, friendship and where men can support each other through good times and times when life gets that little bit difficult. It’s a place where men can share with each other their feelings, concerns and ideas in a safe and accepting environment.

At Samford Area Mens Shed (SAMS) one of the highlights of each month is the Guest Speaker night. On this occasion, a person of note is invited to talk to the men about their life experiences. And just to gauge just how popular the Guest Speaker night is - it

always packed out with the men and their wives or other guests. A few weeks ago, the men were delightfully entertained by that legend of AFL rugby league, Sam Thaiday. Sam spoke about his football career and had all the men and their guests enthralled with what he had to say. The evening was a great success and Sam lingered longer to answer the many questions thrown his way. Men of Samford and surrounds, why not to come along and see what SAMS is all about.

Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. Find out more at samfordshed. org.au or email samssecretary1@gmail.com

ALPACA CARE –CALL ME AL

Alpacas are growing in popularity in Samford and surrounds and it’s not hard to see why. These guys make great lawnmowers, do less damage to existing plants and land, and are just plain adorable.

If you’re thinking of joining the alpaca herd or if you already have alpacas as part of your paddock family, Dr Georgia Gurney from Samford Valley Veterinary Hospital has some tips you’ll be fleeced to know.

“Alpacas have pads instead of hooves so do less damage to land, they graze more gently than other species allowing pasture growth to continue, they are very neat and tidy, tending to defecate in piles (latrines) away from where they are grazing and their manure can make excellent fertiliser,” she said.

Apart from being excellent livestock, alpacas can make quite good pets as they generally get along with other herd species such as sheep and even quiet dogs.

“Like any livestock species, Alpacas as pets tend to become quieter the more they are handled,” Georgina said. “However, owners must be aware that they can become quite

dominant and even aggressive so treating them as livestock instead of additional dogs or cats in the family is imperative. They may look cute and fluffy, but they generally do not enjoy being petted or cuddled especially on the head.”

If you’re thinking of stretching your neck out to add an alpaca to your land, there are a few things to be prepared for. Alpacas can live as long as 15-20 years so it is key to see them as a long-term commitment.

more information on and assist you with. Getting wormed once a year by the shearer is not adequate for most alpacas,” Georgia said.

“Alpacas also require twice yearly vaccination (after the initial course) to ensure prevention of serious disease including pulpy kidney, tetanus, black disease, malignant oedema and blackleg.”

Originating from South America, alpacas are prone to develop health issues in our very different Samford climate.

Prevalent health concerns local vets see regularly include: high parasite/worm burdens, mite infestation and fly strike, eye ulceration (usually associated with mites), tick paralysis, heat stroke and wild dog attacks.

Georgia also has advice on how many alpacas are needed for different land types.

“Stocking density for alpacas is based very similarly to sheep; it is very dependent on the quality of pasture. For very, very good pasture you could have as many as 10 animals per 5 acres, however, for most land in the Samford area, it would be recommended that you only have 2-4 alpacas per 5 acres to keep your animals and your property thriving,” Georgia said.

“It is highly recommended that prospective owners visit alpaca breeding farms and speak to the farmers or breeders about their stock. It is a good idea to try and buy from an Australian Alpaca Association accredited breeder and obtain the relevant health records for the animal/s they are buying,” Georgia said.

Alpacas also require health procedures including vaccination, worming and shearing. Ensuring you are able to catch and restrain them is key to their ongoing health.

“Alpacas require regular worming which is best based on their faecal egg count result, which Samford Vets can give you

“This is because alpacas have a complex three-compartmented stomach that makes them better at extracting protein and energy from poor quality forages and so more land per animal on lower quality pasture is more ideal than less pasture and more supplementation with feeds that may be inappropriate for them.”

It’s a seated activity, open to all people from 10 to 100 and is held weekly at the Samford Scouts Shelter Shed, alongside the bushland environs of Samford Creek.

The classes will commence on Thursday 20th April from 12 noon - 2pm. The classes can be attended casually and if there is enough commitment could progress to building towards a little performance for friends and family.

For further information and bookings, please contact Elliott Orr at elliott@ talkinthedrum.com.au or M: 0407 372 554, or Talkin the Drum on socials.

Thanks to Samford Valley Community Church for another great event, organising the Car Boot Sale. Despite lesser numbers of young people attending, having the upmarket Bric a Bric (kindly donated by supporters) made up for reduced sales in toys and games. The books were as popular as ever, with a big run on British author Lee Child, writer of thriller novels. As usual the Library had plenty of choice with a 7m x 6m presence!

The Car Boot Sale was very timely to help us continue covering additional Council, earthworks and crane hire costs, which are now ineligible for grants due to the changed land status for the temporary housing of the shipping containers on a private property.

In the meantime, boxes of books belonging to the main collection are being moved into the containers. This will be the first time in 2½ years the main collection will be located in one place. Following on, the next priority will be shelving for the books, followed by the shelving of the books. Volunteers can just about move boxes with their eyes closed these days!

Catering at the Native Plants Market being held at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 1st April is the Library’s next big fundraising event. Homemade produce, mostly relative to Australian native species, will also be available for purchase.

In the middle of activities, the manufacture of the trailer wagon-shaped canopy is being organised. The trailer will be out of action for a few weeks with a three part company process involved - the frame, the canopy and printing. Any company interested in sponsoring the trailer (logo printed on the canopy) please contact info@ communtylibrarysamford.org.

The trailer also needs a name. To date, the Book Wagon has been suggested. Further suggestions are most welcome! In the meantime, keep watch on fb Community Library Samford for updates.

OUT & ABOUT

OUT & ABOUT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS THE BEST MEDICINE

Throughout our lifespan, physical activity is extremely important in maintaining all aspects of our health including physical, mental and emotional. Research shows that more than half the Australian population currently do not meet the guidelines for physical activity.

Benefits of completing physical activity include:

• Improved physical and mental function.

• Improved quality of life.

• Increased energy.

• Reduction in the risk of multiple health conditions.

• Reducing the risk of obesity.

• Maintaining or improving multiple health conditions including blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

How much physical activity is currently recommended for adults?

Between the ages of 18-65:

• active on most days totaling 2.5 to 5hrs per week, approximately 30 –45 minutes a day.

• Strengthening 2 times per week

65 years and older:

• At least 30 minutes of moderate activity daily.

• • Do a range of activities that involve strength, balance and flexibility.

Tips to getting active

MAKE IT FUN - Get a friend and make each other accountable. Find something that you enjoy, and it is more likely that you will stick to it in the long term. Join a group or find a class. Start small and gradually increase - one short walk is better than none!

Psychology

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FRENCH TO MAKE THIS!

For those who’ve grown eggplants this year, you may have an abundance of these wonderful dusky purple globes hanging out there in the garden looking beautiful and ripe, just waiting for you to be inspired. Maybe you’ve cooked lots of grilled eggplant and babaganoush, donated some to the Edible Exchange, but look, there’s still more! Well - Ratatouille may be your answer. Here’s the passionate gardener - but time poor cook’s - version that’s wonderful to freeze for a warm vegan winter stew.

The nicest thing (apart from taste) about Ratatouille is it’s super flexible. The quantities are variable – just follow the basic principles in cooking and vegetable to fluid ratio and make it to suit your taste.

RATATOUILLE

Ingredients:

2 fresh picked eggplants (if older, you may need to salt them to remove bitterness)

2 medium/large zucchini

2 capsicum (I prefer red but take what I can get or grow)

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 x 425 tin crushed tomatoes (or fresh equivalent)

1 x vege stock cube (or your own blend)

400ml water

3tblsp oil (I use virgin olive)

Optional – herbs, curry powder

Method:

Decide if you like large or small cubes and cube/cut eggplant, zucchini and capsicum separately to suit.

In a saucepan or large pot, heat 1.5tblsps of oil, then add the eggplant and cook on a medium to high heat until it is a bit soft and has browned a bit. Use a wooden spoon to stop it sticking and burning. Remove eggplant when done.

In the same pan add another 1.5tblsps of oil, let it heat a bit, then sauté the garlic for half a minute. Add the zucchini. Use your wooden spoon to keep everything moving and cook for about 3-5 mins (depends on your cube size). Add capsicum and keep stirring and cooking for another 2-5 mins. Add back the eggplant, with the tomatoes, stock cube, water (I fill my tomato can 2/3 full of water and use that) and let it simmer on a lower temperature for a good 40 minutes or until everything looks cooked and the tomato sauce rich and tasty.

For a bit of spice, try adding a little curry powder.

This is a dish that improves over time, so it’s great for making the day before or just keep a big container full in the fridge and re-heat portions for lunch or dinner. It goes extremely well with rice, on toast, and even with mashed potato. Personally, I like it with feta cheese melted in, and some thyme sprinkled on top.

If you manage to keep leftovers, place into portion size containers for freezing when cool. It’s a great winter hotpot.

Finding Friendship Through the Years

This year marks sixty years of Fay Lergessner living in the Samford area, where she continues to embrace new local opportunities, even in her eighties.

After marrying Brian Lergessner, Fay moved from East Brisbane to an 80 acre block they shared with Brian’s mother after his father passed away. Brian’s father used to sell cream from his dairy farm, which he would carry to the main road for a truck to collect. This drop-off point was on the corner of today’s Eatons Crossing Rd and Lergessner Rd.

“The original way into our property was to go through Lergessner Rd, but it wasn’t formed back then. It was just part of a paddock that belonged to another farmer,” Fay said.

Fay was quick to find work in her new country town, serving customers at one of Samford’s first shops on Main St.

“It was one where you went and got products for cows. I was there for quite a while and they allowed me to stay there until the baby was born. They even gave me a bassinet to use,” Fay said.

Fay and Brian had three children, Sharyn, Raelene and Aaron, all of whom went to Samford State School. Fay took many opportunities as a young mum to keep active in her community through both volunteer work and further local employment.

“I started doing voluntary work as a teacher’s aide at Samford School with Barbara Fenwick, one of the grade one teachers. Then after that, I got jobs.”

Fay found work at the local newsagency located across the road from today’s John Scott Park. The shop then changed into a fruit and vegetable store which Fay continued to work at. She also polished the floors at the old pub.

“The polisher was so big; it was industrial and it used to swing me around!” Fay remembers.

After retirement, Fay continued to keep busy by taking up painting; filling her home with her artworks. Fay also volunteered at the Over 50s Club, where she served as President for six years before the club became part of the Samford RSL.

Meeting at Farmer’s Hall , the Over 50s Club provided a social hub for locals in their later years. People came together to play cards, boardgames and indoor bowls over morning tea.

“It was a big group that provided friendship. I met lots of people through the club,” Fay said.

“I have a friend now who came over from England and was ringing up different places so that she could meet people. She rang me and I said, ‘Yeah! Come on down!’ and we’ve been friends now for 15 years.”

Friendship is what has brought Fay to the next chapter of her Samford life, leaving the acreage where she was living on her own to move into Samford Grove Retirement Village.

“I love living here now, I thoroughly enjoy it. You walk outside and see people and have a chat. Where I used to live, I was up on this property by myself, and my neighbours were a fair way away. It was lonely,” Fay said.

“There’s quite a few people here I know. It’s just made a difference from being a sad face to a happy face. For friendship; I’d recommend it to anybody.”

Wrapped About Easter Recycling

While indulging in a few (or more) Easter eggs doesn’t always leave you feeling entirely virtuous, an eggcellent way to increase your good vibes, post-chocolate binge, is through recycling.

Foil Easter egg wrappers and aluminium foil in general can be recycled in the yellow lid bin. It’s important though to roll your bits of foil into a ball shape, roughly the size of a tennis ball. This stops tiny pieces getting lost in the recycling process.

Equally as important, with all of your foil wrappers all scrunched together, no one will ever know how much Easter chocolate you’ve eaten. By collecting wrappers over a few days or weeks, it’s surprising how quickly that tennis ball shape emerges.

Easter Driving

Don’t egg-ceed the limit!

Brendale Evening VIEW Club

Egg-cellent Easter Celebrations

The View Club ladies had a fun night as they celebrated Easter a couple of weeks early. The room at Aspley Hornets Club was decorated for the occasion as Gerry and Judy, our event coordinators, egg-celled themselves once again.

The Easter long weekend is synonymous with mini breaks, seeing friends and family, and road rule crack downs. However while a number of other states face double demerit points for road offences during this busier and more dangerous time on the road, Queensland runs this system year-round.

In Queensland, double demerits apply to those who commit a second road offence within a year of committing another. For anyone with a clear record for more than 12 months, demerits are issued as normal.

Police have warned drivers don’t need to commit the same offence as they did the previous time to be stung with double demerit points.

Our evening’s hostess Jenny was eager to welcome the ladies as they came with generous donations of Easter Eggs and goodies for the many Easter Raffles.

Members enjoyed a 2 course meal, tea and coffee while listening to our guest speaker Vicki Bennett, who spoke about her many books on the ANZACs. Afterwards, the Easter raffle draws filled the room with laughter as members quickly jumped up to claim their prize.

In Australia recycled aluminium is usually made back into more aluminium. Your rocky road Easter egg foil may become the aluminium in a soft drink can, an aluminium baseball bat or could simply end up being more aluminium foil.

Aluminium is especially well suited to recycling as 100 per cent of it can be recovered in the recycling process. Reprocessing usually involves crushing, shredding and melting with new aluminium before converting it into new products.

It is important that your foil ball is clear of any food stuck to it. If there’s too much melted chocolate stuck to your wrapper, it’s best to put that bit in general waste.

The cardboard or hard plastic packaging surrounding your chocolate bunny can also go straight into your yellow lid recycling bin. Again, the packaging needs to be clean and dry, which is a great reason to make sure every last bite of chocolate is eaten.

Road offences which can accrue double demerits include driver seatbelt offences, mobile phone offences, motorbike helmet offences and offences for speeding more than 21km/h over the speed limit.

Fines will not be doubled for subsequent offences.

For those who live interstate, New South Wales, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory will have double demerits in place from April 6 to April 10. Remaining states do not employ a double demerits scheme, so penalties are as usual over Easter.

Queensland Transport notes that anyone who is a Queensland licence holder that commits a traffic offence anywhere in Australia will have demerit points applied and recorded on your traffic history as if the offence was committed in Queensland. That being said, keep within the road rules and none of this will apply. Safe travels for everyone travelling to visit loved ones or chasing summer at the beach!

VIEW (Voice, Interests & Education of Women) is a national self-governed women’s organisation formed by the children’s charity The Smith Family. VIEW women fully support The Smith Family’s Learning for Life educational program, which gives disadvantage Australian children the step up they need through education to achieve their goals as adults, helping to break the poverty cycle. Our club supports 8 students.

Next Meeting: 18th April - guest speaker personal trainer Tom Law. You can also join our ‘Coffee and Chat’ on the first Saturday of the month, 10am onwards at White’s Coffee Co. at the Bracken Ridge Tavern.

Our Dinner meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at Aspley Hornets Football Club, Carseldine, 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Come give us a try – we’d love to meet you!
