THE FUTURE OF THE GLASSHOUSE PRECINCT

City of Moreton Bay has been progressively delivering a masterplan at the Samford Parklands to ensure the site reflects a balance of community, cultural, environmental and recreation values.

The Parklands are currently home to the Samford Community Hub, urban farming, sports and recreation activities, an ecocorridor, pastures and a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service precinct.

The Village Green project will soon commence, and deliver an events and picnic lawn, play area, gathering plaza and edible landscapes. This will be located next to the Samford Community Hub.

Consultation for the Glasshouse Precincta 2400m2 area within the parklands located close to the Community Hub and Village Green on the site of the original CSIRO glasshouses – was open from 4 November to December 2023, where community feedback on the future of this area was sought. This was the outcome:

• a facility that enhances the arts community by providing more space for workshops, performances and showcasing work by local artists;

• urban farming to continue in the Samford Parklands and for it to integrate with future development in the Glasshouse Precinct;

• a “branded destination” that attracts tourists while acknowledging the

rich history of the site and character of the local area;

• the future occupants to have shared values that contribute to the successful operation of the facility and align with the values of the broader Samford community.

Council has commissioned artist’s impressions of the reimagined future for the Glasshouse Precinct (below and Pg 3) which are intended to form the basis for the design going forward. They consider:

multiple uses of the facility; community values associated with the site (as heard during consultation) including the site’s history and character of the local area; best practice design principles; site constraints; and potential budget.

Based on recent discussions at the monthly Samford Progress meeting after the latest community consultation, we asked Cr Grimwade to respond to some questions to update the community.

You can find these on Page 3.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I’d like to comment on the recent letter to the Editor from one of our locals who had to get rid of six of his cows, including two calves, because some horrible person reported him to the Council for having too many on his land. I’d like to say to that person, SHAME ON YOU. Whether or not there may have been some pedantic regulation on number of cows per land area, this was NOT a case where the intention behind such regulations was triggered.

These cows are a source of joy for those of us walking, running, or cycling by. They’re healthy, truly happy cows. One of them loves head scratches. They’re curious, friendly, and content. I’d regularly see them moved around on to different fields. They were not neglected in anyway and instead were well looked after and loved. Cows are intensely social animals and love each other’s company. They even have “best friends” in their herd. I’m devastated he had to get rid of them.

Whoever you are, thanks to you six healthy, happy animals have likely ended up in the slaughterhouse because as the buyers are to have said “you get more money for them that way”. Shame on you, whoever you are, shame on you.

GLASSHOUSE PRECINCT

Q: Before any other work can take place on the site, the existing structures need to be removed and site preparatory works completed. Why do the structures need to be demolished?

A: The original structures are in extremely poor condition and while there has been some minor worsening in recent years, it needs to be clearly understood that the structures were never fit to be reconfigured into community facilities when vacated by CSIRO, because of the research function they were built to accommodate. The critical structural elements of the glasshouses have been assessed by independent engineers and architects who have advised Council they are effectively at end of life and unable to practicably be repurposed.

Q: Why is the flooring of the project cement?

A: The floor of the reimagined glasshouse is intended to be concrete for durability. It appears that there was a misunderstanding about the external surface being concrete and this is not the case. It is intended to be a compacted gravel type surface that can accommodate a wide range of activities while further funding is sought for additional facilities.

Q: There seems to be a lot of glass in the roof of the design. Given the heat in summer, this could make the building too hot to use during the day. What is the reason for the glass?

A: The artists impressions tried to emulate the look and feel of the old glasshouses. However, they are simply an impression of the scale and form of the structure which remains very respectful of the current glasshouses. If a hard roof is deemed

THE FUTURE OF THE GLASSHOUSE PRECINCT

more effective and functional, Council will consider this in the coming detailed design phase to ensure the structure is fit for purpose.

Q: Pods will be designed for the inside of this space. How will these be used?

A: The pods are intended to be flexible, bookable spaces in which meetings and other activities can be conducted. They might be able to be moved to allow more flexible use of the overall pavilion space and could be booked for a range of times to support demand from user groups. They will avoid the dilemmas of dedicated spaces that might not work for everyone, noting the community will need to grow into the facility.

Q: Will there be toilets in this project?

A: Yes there will be dedicated toilets and a modest kitchenette in the first stage.

Q: Will the existing community groups continue at this site once the project is complete?

A: Council has no intention to displace current user groups as a result of the project. The intention is to allow the widest possible spectrum of community use. Council acknowledges that there are some activities that can’t be held in the SCHUB and the concrete floor in the pavilion and external gravel surfaces will allow a wider range of activities.

Q: Budget has not yet been finalised for the project. Once this has happened the project will progress from concept to detailed design. Will there be further community consultation at this time? If so, when will this occur?

A: Council has completed community engagement on the glasshouse precinct which can be viewed on the project website. As detailed design progresses, Council will continue to make information available about the look and feel of the project. The feedback received in the recent engagement

session has been very valuable and will greatly assist Council in honing in on key outcomes of the design phase.

You can read more about the project here: https://yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ samford-glasshouse-precinct-revitalisationproject.

FIRE ANTS - KEEP UP TO DATE

The Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta , is a nasty invader from South America. Ant nests have been discovered nearby so an alert campaign has been initiated for the Samford Valley. These ants destroy all small animals living at ground level, but humans, household pets and larger farm animals can suffer multiple stinging with the possibility of a severe reaction.

Australian biting-stinging ants are pathetic amateurs compared to these invaders. Typically, the ants are first detected after a multiple stinging episode by ants from a well-established nest. The ants will probably have been established for some time with thousands of individuals located in a number of connected nests.

Detected ant colonies are exterminated and surrounding areas are inspected for other infestations but with so much bush areas, the chance of 100% detection is low, however, we must fight this pest to our maximum ability and government agencies have been active since its discovery in Australia. The local campaign is to increase surveillance for ant colonies with a rapid

reporting system on possible infestations. An improved inspection of soil and mulch materials that could be harbouring ant nests has been instituted through the Qld Government website: https://www.fireants. org.au/

Scouts Go for Gold

The Samford Scouts recently took part in an adventure camping weekend for which the theme was creating a pop up gold miners tent town set in the mining boom of the 1800’s. Known for their excellent skills in almost everything, Scouts were called upon to provide basic infrastructure including a Hospital, Bank, Pub, Electricity and an Explosives store. When a miner’s rebellion was staged, the Scouts were called upon to construct canons and take part in the final battle for gold.

Providing adventure challenges like this is part of Scouting - discovering the world with new friends and getting the chance to master new skills and try things that home or school won’t provide.

The ultimate camp experience for Scouts is attending the Australian Jamboree and in January 2025 this will be held in Maryborough, Queensland.

Every Scout wishing to attend has to achieve a set level of qualifying achievements and for their parents, there is a significant cost to cover for attending the ten-day event. So, to support the Jamboree Scouts, the Samford Scout Group is running a Jamboree Lottery with 52 prizes worth over $300,000. Tickets are available now at www.samfordscouts.com.au

Samford Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has been selected as the Charity Partner at The Star $3M Stradbroke

Ladbrokes Calcutta at Howard Smith Wharves on June 13.

The annual event donates 10 percent of the night’s raffle and auction proceeds to a chosen beneficiary; and Samford RDA is pleased to have been chosen by the Brisbane Racing Club as this year’s recipient in the fundraising initiative. Last year’s recipient, Rise Up, received around $17,000 from the event. Grants and outside fundraising are vital to charity operations like RDA.

The Calcutta is part of Stradbroke Season, Queensland’s premier racing carnival, and a highlight of The Star Stradbroke Day.

The Calcutta is not the first time Samford RDA has benefited from a charity fundraiser with the Brisbane Racing Club. Local RDA volunteers have attended three race days in the past few years to participate in the 50:50 Charity Raffle. This not-for-profit initiative is operated by the 50-50 Foundation to raise funds for charities throughout the State. Half the prize pool raised at each raffle goes to a lucky ticket holder, with the remaining 50 percent (less commission) going directly to its partner charity on the day.

Bird survey

During our latest survey of the EcoCorridor on 23 May, our birders recorded an impressive 57 species, yet saw no raptors or waterbirds (since the January flood, the South Pine River has only been easily accessible at the waterhole). Early highlights included a Rose-crowned FruitDove feeding on fruiting White Cedar on the riverbank near the picnic table and an Azure Kingfisher on a dead branch overhanging the river.

The morning was notable for the high number of small bush birds, including all 3 local fairywrens (Superb, Red-backed and Variegated), all 3 finches (Double-barred and Red-browed Finch and Chestnutbreasted Mannikin) and all 3 ‘little brown jobs’ (Brown Thornbill and Large-billed and White-browed Scrubwren). Winter migrants comprised Grey Fantail and Spotted Pardalote. There were large numbers of Silvereye, including a couple of the Tasmanian subspecies, distinguished by their buffy flanks. Other notable records included Grey-crowned Babbler heard to the west and Tree Martin hawking overhead. As well as the birds, it was great to see four uncommon Bordered Rustic butterflies seeking out their host plant, Flintwood (Scolopia braunii), in riverbank revegetation zone P4.

Bushcare

Our next Council-assisted bushcare session will be from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 9 June. Weather permitting, we hope to have two piles of mulch to spread (at the picnic

site and near the powerpole) and a few infill shrubs and trees to plant. However, there are still masses of weeds to remove, particularly in riverbank planting P4, so we would really appreciate all hands on deck, with new volunteers always welcome. Afterwards, we will share afternoon tea, supplied by our parent organisation Samford Progress, at the picnic table.

A DELECTABLE 5 YEAR CELEBRATION

The 5th annual Samford Edible Garden Trail was held on 18 and 19 May and, for something that always takes months of planning, it sure goes by in a heartbeat!

Fortunately we couldn’t have asked for better weather: Saturday dawned to a beautiful clear blue sky, with no sign of the drizzle which dampened the previous two days and had us slightly worried for the weekend ahead; Sunday was equally spectacular, with a cold snap just as our Trail-end celebrations drew to a close.

Each day saw dozens of enthusiastic volunteers decked out in eye-catching purple branded t-shirts heading to their garden of choice. Firstly to meet the hosts who graciously opened their gardens to the public, then to greet food gardeners from near and far at the gate and swap tales of growing successes or learning opportunities. In all, we had 79 welcome desk volunteers, 28 of whom had volunteered at least once before (if not two or three times!), ie, 35%. [What a great statistic to be typing mid-way through National Volunteer Week!]

A BIG Thank You

to our amazing local businesses for their support of this year’s Trail, starting with:

• Our sponsor Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank. If not for them, our lively and thoughtprovoking Saturday evening panel discussion “How do communities ensure local food security?”among other things - would not have been possible. Panellists Jerry

Coleby-Williams, Morag Gamble, Peter Kearney and Cliff Holden shared their ideas on this important and complex question/topic, and sought thoughts from enthralled audience members who were happy to contribute;

• Anthony from The Famous Samford Patisserie, especially for donating the marvellous cake which we made short work of at our Sunday evening post-Trail debrief and dinner;

• Latin Shack Cafe for their venue with amazing atmosphere;

• Samford Progress President Leah Hudson for ensuring we didn’t go thirsty, and John from Semantic Signs for updating our banners free-of-charge;

• Samford Variety Store for discounts and price matching so we could shop locally and meet our stationery requirements on budget; and

• The Long Yard Larder, Kakadu Organics Juice Bar, Canter & Colt, and Little Tree Bake & Brew House for getting behind our event by showcasing a particular meal/dish incorporating locally-grown/sourced ingredients.

We L-O-V-E putting this event on and having such an invested community in which to do it. Time to relax a bit now, before we start planning the next Trail.

THANK YOU to our garden hosts – what an incredibly talented group of people who were so generous sharing their time and talent.

THANK YOU to everyone who purchased tickets and came out – many on both days –to enjoy the gardens and the sunshine and buy the produce that was on sale.

THANK YOU to our sponsor Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank.

The Good Wool Fairy

On the day we delivered an SUV load of rugs, beanies, scarves and full toiletry bags from Crafting Kindness, and baby kits and toys from Charity Craft Creators and Crafting Kindness, to lovely Pat Needham from Samford Support Network who coordinated a collection for Care Kits for Kids, the good wool fairy delivered bags of beautiful wool and squares to be joined into rugs to the SCHUB for our busy fingers. If you haven’t heard of Care Kits for Kids, they support children and teens in crisis and in care.

Then - in answer to a callout for good quality clothes for the displaced and others in need, another lovely fairy facing her own challenges, appeared with exactly what was needed. It was like Christmas. The joy of seeing how our community works together,

selflessly to help others is beyond measure. Thank you to all those who give so much. You may not see the effect of what you give, but it is very much appreciated. The fabled Aesop said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Our program for this month is as follows: 31st May: Cuppa and Chat at 2, Good Stuff Ideas Forum discussing Mothering at 3 ish.

7th June: Samford Scribblers at noon til 2, then Cuppa and Chat til 5ish.

14th June: Cuppa and Chat at 2 followed by Therapeutic Chair Yoga with Ruth at 3.

21st June: Crafting Kindness with the usual Cuppa and Chat at 2.

The Airservices Noise Action Plan for Brisbane (NAP4B) continues to disappoint. Airservices next round of faux engagement theatre commences this month. But don’t get too excited, as Airservices have chosen to ignore all communities north of the Brisbane River. (See ad Pg 27)

Their next round of engagement will focus on:

• preferred designs for over-water departures from the legacy runway (progressed from Phase 1).

• additional segregated modes (progressed from Phase 2).

• new flight path proposals to reduce the complexity of Brisbane airspace operations.

• updates on Simultaneous Opposite Direction Parallel Runway Operations (SODPROPS).

• Package 3 design methodology developed by Trax International.

As you can see, this next round will include and may impact our area of Samford. Therefore, I suggest you register for an online meeting:

Wed 5 June: 6pm - 7:30pm ONLINE

Tues 11 June: 12noon - 1:30pm ONLINE

Tues 18 June: 6pm - 7:30pm ONLINE

Please use this link to register your attendance:

https://engage.airservicesaustralia. com/nap4b/surveys/ phase-4-engagement-session-registration

Airservices has also released the results for the NAP4B Phase Two. This concerned our area because it included night time departures over land Noise Sharing. To cut to the chase, Airservices has hand balled these options to TRAX International to include in Phase Three and Four.

In other words, we are still in limbo as Airservices fail to meet their obligations to the community and are not capable of professional flight path design.

A CALL TO BARE ARMS FOR BLOOD DONATIONS

Blood supplies in Queensland are currently at a critical level for all blood types, with the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood service calling on the general public to roll up their sleeves and donate if health permits.

Every blood donation is separated into three components: red cells, plasma, and platelets. Red cells are the vital, oxygencarrying cells in blood, with around 34 per cent of donated red cells used to help patients with cancer and blood diseases.

Without a significant boost in people donating, supplies will soon be at their lowest level this year.

Some blood types are most in demand, including O negative red cells which can be given to anyone of any blood type in emergencies.

Local resident John Clark knows the inside of a blood donation room better than most, having donated over 480 times and counting since 1970.

“Donating blood takes less than 10 minutes and I just feel good afterwards,”

he said. “It’s better to give than to receive, especially when it comes to blood.”

Donating plasma or platelets is a longer process taking up to 1.5 hours, but can be undertaken every two weeks. Donating whole blood can be booked in every 10 weeks.

“I’ve scheduled 5-6 appointments in advance so I can go on the same day at the same time when it’s convenient for me,” John said.

“They’re good people at the Blood Bank, and they look after everyone really well once you’re there.”

OUT & ABOUT Visual Artists

This year at Samford Kindy, the teachers are implementing a Visual Arts program created by Sally Morrison, which was developed and perfected over several years at Dayboro Community Kindergarten.

Engaging in the processes of Look, Explore, Wonder and Create, the children have begun their learning by exploring the visual element of Line and its expressive qualities.

First, they explored straight lines and the terms horizontal and vertical and what they mean. The children enjoyed using their bodies to create tall and strong vertical lines that go straight up and down and sleeping, horizontal lines that go across or left to right.

When it was time to experiment with line making in their art journals, the singing bowl and word prompts were used to guide

children observed and commented on the different lines they could see, which included rainbow shaped lines and many short white lines that reminded us of snow.

The children will continue to build on their knowledge of visual arts elements, including shape and colour, how artists use them and how they can use them when making artworks of their own.

These artful experiences have multiple developmental benefits for our kindy children across physical, social, emotional and cognitive domains. We look forward to sharing more of the masterpieces created by our little artists over the coming weeks on our social media accounts. Please follow along.

2024 SAMFORD SHOW Just Over the Horizon

With only about seven weeks to go until the 2024 Show opens on Saturday 13 July, the Committee are making final preparations – and hoping that La Nina stays on the other side of the horizon at least until the last satisfied patron leaves the Showground late on the afternoon of Sunday 14 July.

The Show is one of the most popular and best-loved celebrations of life in our region. Each year we seem to break new records for attendance while retaining our reputation as an unfussed, family-friendly celebration offering top quality events, exhibits and entertainment for all ages. Our Show has just about everything the Ekka offers, except for the hassle.

This year the very popular Dinkum Dinosaurs are returning to the Show. Kids from past years still remember cuddling a baby dinosaur that feels just about as real as an original. Other cuddly four-footed

creatures will be happy to get up close and personal in the petting Zoo, and less cuddly ones at the educational Dreamtime Reptiles. Magnificent horses will do their thing all weekend in the Equestrian main arena, the pavilion will offer displays of local produce and the skills of our cooks, and cattle and poultry competitions will be other reminders of Samford’s rural heritage.

As ever, the Show Committee Society is providing a wide range of food outlets in the Food Court area. Patrons expect a full day out with the family, including top quality food from the cuisines of many international cultures. Relaxing with the family, enjoying great food and a drink from the Rotary Bar while watching the fireworks on Saturday evening, is a tradition for both locals and visitors from far afield.

The Show Society several years ago adopted a Sustainability Policy under which plastic containers are not allowed to be sold at the Showgrounds, but tap water is available for patrons to refill their own containers.

EXCELLENT VETERINARY CARE RIGHT HERE IN OUR REGION

Online ticketing for adults, children, families, concessions (children under 5 have free entry) will be available from mid-June and will be announced in the Village Pump and on the Show Society website. Prices have been kept at the same level as last year and parking is free on site.

The Show is wholly planned and managed by volunteers, and the Committee welcomes anyone from the community - with or without particular skills - who would like to be a part of this iconic event.

Samford parkrun Coming Soon

Local resident Tricia Velthuizen has been working for many, many months to get a parkrun for Samford. What’s a parkrun? Well, it’s a free, community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. It’s 5kms and takes place every Saturday morning.

Approval has recently been given by City of Moreton Bay for the proposed route which will start in John Scott Park. The next step is to raise $7,500 as start up funds and gather a build on the small group of local volunteers to make it all happen. As Tricia says: “parkrun is not really about a run. It’s about coming together in our local community to enjoy time outdoors and time together.”

If you can help, get in touch with Tricia on Facebook. We’ll also keep you updated as this great initiative takes shape.

Club members were very sad to learn of the death of one of our past members, Ross Valentine. (16th November 1947 – 9th May 2024). Ross was a wonderful husband to Theresa, father to Janita and grandfather. He was always a keen sportsman playing cricket, tennis, golf and in later years, he joined Samford Bowls Club and learned the game of lawn bowls. He not only played bowls but along with Theresa, he was a devoted club member taking on running the Club Bar. Ross was a true gentleman. He was a kind, softly spoken man with a warm smile for all. Ross and Theresa moved to the Sunshine Coast to enjoy their later years.

The ladies Champion of Champions 4’s competition final was played on 11th May. The winning team of Jo Ehrlich, lead, Shirley Martin, 2nd, Janice Ridley, 3rd and Pam Campbell, skip, took some time to warm up with the opponent team, Glynnis Brownhill, lead, Margaret Reilly, 2nd, Di Wilson, 3rd and Judy Campbell, skip, leading by ten in the early stages. It all came down to the last 3 ends and could have been a win to either team until the last bowl was played. The

winning team will progress to the district 4’s competition to be played over the weekend of June 29 – 30th.

Upcoming events

1st June: Patron and Club Representative’s Day. Our Patron, Mac Patterson and sectional representatives, Lesley Maher and Rod Palmer invite all members to join them for lunch on this special occasion followed by an afternoon of 2 Bowl Triples. Sponsored by Denture Square.

16th June: Bribie Island Social Club visit. A bus full of eager bowlers travel from various Bribie bowls clubs to enjoy a day at Samford for lunch, bowls and the chance to meet some fellow bowlers for an afternoon of social bowls. Sponsored by Alex Gow Funerals.

Samford Bowls Club will be supporting the 100 years celebration of St Paul’s Church Samford on Saturday 29th June, 1.00pm to 5pm. Look for Kitty’s Kitchen stall and mini lawn bowls rink.

20 – 26 May was National Volunteers week with the theme Something for Everyone, ‘recognising the diverse passions and talents everyone brings to volunteering’ – which describes the members of the Samford Bowls Club perfectly. Across Australia, it is estimated that nearly 6 million people

volunteer through an organisation annually. Our club would not operate without the wonderful members who dedicate so much time volunteering to ‘make things happen’. From taking positions on the board, players committee, sub committees, coaching, cleaning, running the bar, mowing, selectors, office staff, district reps, writing grants, kitchen duties, web pages plus the many more small and large jobs that need doing. Thank you.

SAVING KOALAS FROM EXTINCTION

Update from Deborah Tabart OAM

Deborah Tabart, “The Koala Woman”, is updating us on the status of koalas and the work of the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) at our meeting on Tuesday, 4 June, 6:45pm for 7pm at the CWA Hall, Main Street Samford. Visitors are welcome.

Deborah, Chair of the Australia Koala Foundation (www.savethekoala.com), has transformed it into an internationally recognised scientific organisation that is the leading voice for Koala conservation. Habitat destruction is the main cause of the decline of koalas, alongside diseases of koalas and eucalypts, bushfires, droughts, and attacks from dogs and road vehicles. The Australian Koala Foundation works to research, educate and advocate for koalas and their preservation, ultimately aiming to enact a Koala Protection Act in the Australian Parliament.

Deborah spoke to NPQ Samford members at the AKF’s Quinlin Research Station at Kenilworth five years ago. Of note, given the magnificent success of the 2024 Samford Edible Garden Trail (SEGT) in demonstrating the Samford community’s collaborative approaches to ensure food security, Deborah practices permaculture and grows her vegetables.

These issues are pertinent, given that Australia’s State of the Nation Report 2023 shows a continued decline in environment habitats and species and is rated 7.5 out of 10 for overall health. Private local landholders with Land for Wildlife and non-government organisations such as the AKF, contribute significantly to Australia’s commitment to conserving 30% of land by 2030. Australians, especially in the Samford District, realise we

can and are making positive environmental contributions.

The meeting will proceed through its agenda, followed by a show and tell of interesting plants brought in, Deborah’s presentation, and then supper when our raffle is drawn. Bring a little cash for tickets to win one of 5-7 native plants, such as a few from the May meeting: little Evodia, a Fern-leafed Tuckeroo and a Cinnamon Myrtle.

Stefan Hattingh’s comprehensive talk on building barn owl nest boxes to attract them for efficient and safe exotic rodent control was very informative and entertaining. Nest box plans are available on the internet. Let’s clean up the rodents and the rodenticides in our environments by collaborating with the barn owls.

I must again commend the SEGT for uplifting the spirits of the Samford community and its visitors.

For the second year, Samford State School students have been learning the fine techniques of archery under the tutelage of volunteer coaches at the Samford Valley Target Archers club grounds.

This was the first time in a few weeks that the students were able to get out onto the grounds, rather than shooting in the indoor range. Shooting has been going well, and some of the students could well find their sporting future in archery.

The reason for the restriction was the works that had been going on at the club grounds, laying concrete paths to facilitate wheelchair movement and target presentation. Crusher dust has also been placed in the waiting areas to improve the footing. Club members have been most impressed with the improvements, and the Club continues to be a major sports facility.

The works were funded by grants from the State Government and the City of Moreton Bay, and input from the Club itself. The Club also gratefully acknowledges the support from Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank, for their grant to support the project with the Samford State School.

Long-term plans see improvements to the Club’s facilities continuing well into the future.

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Graham!

Growing up in the ’50s, he laughed at the Ma and Pa Kettle films with their 15 unmanageable kids, until he eventually found himself number 3 out of 12 kids in his own family. His mum never went to work after getting married, but in her defence she was pregnant a lot, and such a great cook. His dad was an SP Bookie so didn’t exactly work either. Graham’s first job earning taxfree pocket money was cycling around his home town of Lismore, NSW, transferring sealed bags and unmarked boxes between the DHA Depot (Drug Houses of Australia) and local pharmacies, with no questions asked. Essentially a drug courier.

Later on, he applied to join the Navy but failed the entrance exam. The recruiter said unfortunately he didn’t quite meet the height requirement, but he suspects it may have had something to do with his resumé proudly listing drug courier as prior work experience. Believing his calling was to help

people, he took on Balmain Hospital as his next venture, where he extracted blood from mostly willing patients, and personally signed bodies out of the morgue to ensure the funeral people got the right ones from then on. He really enjoyed that, but wasn’t doing too well in his Medical Tech course,

so chose to join the Weather Bureau instead.

The intensive 12 months at Training School was mostly spent in a Melbourne boarding house, where he could tell what day it was by the meal in front of him. His initial posting with the Bureau was Hobart, where he passed his motorbike licence by proving he could ride to the nearest roundabout and back without knocking anyone over or falling off. It was at a nurse’s party in Tasmania that he met his lovely wife-to-be. They married not long after and started their own family, having two children in WA and two in Tassie.

At SAMS, Graham was our Treasurer for a good while, and we’d kid him about taking so many holidays, but these days he likes to mop the kitchen floor, order monogrammed shirts for new members, and has been voted Shedder Of The Month by his peers. No questions asked.

Check out SAMS website samfordshed. org.au, enquire at samssecretary1@gmail. com, or visit us at Showgrounds Drive, Highvale, next to the Showgrounds entrance.

OUT & ABOUT

Now the weather has settled somewhat from all the rain, sorting and shelving of books can again continue. The time out has been quite timely with two of BK most experienced library volunteers incapacitated for one reason or another, although both are otherwise well and will make a full recovery.

The library diary is busy preparing for several events over the next couple of months:

Sunday 16 June: The Book Trailer returns to the Cedar Creek Public Hall (CCPH) for the Welcome to Winter Soup Day. This event was the Book Trailer’s first outing complete with canopy. Large crowds attended the Hall last year for an entertaining day. The hugely popular music for the day will again be provided by Asleep at the Reel. Lots of stalls with a variety of goods will be present. The presentation and range of homemade soups, cakes and desserts last year were fabulous!

This event is Hall’s major fundraising event of the year. 11:00am to 4:00pm. See you there!

Saturday 29 June: The Book Trailer will be at the St Paul’s 1924 Fun Day from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Evoking the scenario of Samford from 100 years ago: anything and everything that can be regarded as 1924-ish, including arts and crafts, country dancing, traditional games for kids, colonial foods like damper, pumpkin soup, mulled wine and creamy syllabubs. There will be Devonshire teas, baked potatoes and treats.

Plus of course the 1920’s glamour of cocktails, jazz, flappers and the cha-cha!

Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 July: Mark the date of the Annual Books, Puzzles and Games Sale for all ages. Many thanks once again to Samford Scouts (62 Cash Avenue North) for allowing the use of both the Den and the back area to house the Book Trailer. This event is one of the two major fundraisers of the year.

Hopefully by that date, BK has been successful in a grant application for two branded marquees to provide extra shade for shoppers and sale items.

Watch this space for further updates.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The annual Make a Difference Appeal hosted by Officeworks, raises money for local causes across Australia. This year’s Appeal will focus on supporting charities – including Stationery Aid - that enable children to learn, create and connect for a sustainable future.

Stationery Aid is one of 15 local community organisations selected by Officeworks store team members, based on what felt most relevant to their local communities.

Stationery Aid’s mission is to support our most disadvantaged school students and their families with environmentally sustainable education resources, giving all school students in Queensland, regardless of their background, an equal opportunity to achieve the best possible learning outcomes for a positive future. Through diverse community collaborations, Stationery Aid is able to collect, sort, clean and donate renewed school stationery that would otherwise be heading to landfill. The funds from the Officeworks Make a Difference Appeal will greatly assist Stationery Aid in being able to provide completed school booklists for many more students in need.

Founder Alison Schutt says:

“Based on our research over the last three years, we estimate there are more than 23,000 students annually across Queensland state schools are in need of support with education resources to start school. This is just 4% of the 16.6% of children that live in poverty across Australia so the number of students that require help would be much greater.”

For the month of June, Officeworks customers are encouraged to donate to the Appeal to support Stationery Aid at the check-out in store or online, including Strathpine, Aspley and Windsor stores.

Samford Museum

It is reported and recorded that volunteering was done to give aid to the poor and sick in early times. By the 19th century, more organisations were committed to making a positive impact by introducing volunteers. The word “vol-un-teer” is described as a person who works for an organisation, without being paid.

Being a volunteer, apart from helping in different circumstances, is all good for the soul, wellbeing, meeting new people, and keeping mentally fit and healthy. This is no exception at the Samford Museum. Each facet of this organisation relies on volunteers.

Our visits from different schools are increasing, mainly due to the fact that the curriculum in the classroom has changed somewhat. And that is where the museum comes into play - comparing “years gone by” and “present-day living.” A big requirement is to help and assist the schoolchildren in each display, to showcase what we are all about.

Our request to you is: Are you able to join us as a volunteer? We induct and orientate new people, acquaint them with activities and give a guided tour and introduction to the many displays and other volunteers, which also includes learning what we can pass on to the schoolchildren. The hours you volunteer are up to you - maybe one day, two days, or your choice. A blue card is required to work with schoolchildren in this area. We provide morning tea and lunch.

We have ‘upstairs’ in the main building, where we have many talented people. An historian who was born here is kept busy recording and receiving pertinent and valuable material. The secretary, who handles all of our office work, plus much more. The curator receives donations and accessions them, then adds them to the database. It is necessary to record the whereabouts of all donated items.

Volunteers organise, display and collate relevant information for upcoming special occasions. Always a big job. One who reorganises and adds to displays. There is always filing to attend to, with information from local papers, etc. We have a resident researcher of WW1 and WW2, plus family history.

Relevant data on the museums’ displays is researched, written and collated into a story, passing on the history of the area, which is then published in many local papers. Our

go-to person, who is capable of different jobs, and last but not least, our treasurer.

Downstairs – In general, the volunteers restore very old machinery: lawn mowers, tractors, drays, wheelbarrows, old pumps, gardening and generally tidying up. Racking up leaves, painting restored items and helping with demonstrations, helping set up on demonstrating days, or a general rouse-a-bout.

It is worth a minute of your time to sit and ponder whether you could be one of the many appreciated volunteers, assisting when you are available. Morning tea and lunch are provided. Please feel free to contact us on 3289 2743 or visit us at 21 Station Street, Samford Village. Adults: $5 –children: $1. Open Wednesday and Sunday 10am - 4pm.

FERNY STUDENTS GET MOO-VING

Year 9 Agricultural Practices students at Ferny Grove State High School are getting valuable hands-on experience through a calf rearing program in collaboration with a dairy at Mt Mee.

They’re learning about animal care, feeding routines, and the importance of responsible farming practices. This program aligns with our school’s vision of “every individual discovering their passion on their pathway of learning.” By working directly with animals, students are gaining a deeper understanding of agriculture and exploring potential career paths in this field.

SUSTAINABILITY LEAD ENTERPRISES SIGN UP

Two award winning regional businesses have recently signed up as Green Street Sustainability Lead Enterprises. What this means is they will be sponsoring other organisations to join Green Street so that they access practical sustainability tools, templates and guidance to have a go at being sustainable.

Many Samfordites know that Green Street is a locally-grown online service designed to help households, businesses and enterprises of all sizes have a go at being sustainable.

Solar Bollards Lighting and Promotion Products are both businesses already moving at quite a pace along the road to sustainability and are keen to bring others with them. So as Green Street Lead Enterprises, they will be paying for the Green Street membership for selected businesses in their networks and encouraging them to use the available resources to improve their sustainability.

Why are they doing this? Simple. It’s in the interests of their own companies and their network of companies to have their supply chains and clients on the same sustainability page. Helping their networks helps everyone to thrive in a climate conscious world while helping the planet. With ever-increasing demand for responsible products, services and practices, Green Street and its Lead Enterprises know that sustainability measures help to futureproof a business, manage risks and boost resilience. Customers, governments and industry supply chains expect businesses to meet environmental, social and governance requirements, cut carbon, and reduce negative impacts.

The existing Samford Sustainable Business Network has been pioneering the way forward for businesses and community to collaborate on ‘having a go at being sustainable.’ Likewise, Samford Progress’ Sustainable Samford project is an important cog in the wheel.

COMPARE THE PAIR: Noisy and Little Friarbirds

Honeyeaters (Family Meliphagidae) are the largest, and arguably the most diverse, family of Australian passerines (perching birds) with almost 80 species. They are mostly tree-dwelling songbirds with a pugnacious nature, defending their territories in a hierarchy based on size (the smallest, the Scarlet Honeyeater, weighs just 6 to 12 grams). Honeyeater bills are adapted for nectar feeding, but insects are also a staple part of the diet to provide valuable protein, especially for growing young, and they eat some berries too.

One of the largest and most distinctive groups of honeyeaters are the friarbirds, of which two species occur locally. Friarbirds have stout bills and much bare facial skin, which is black in most species. The aptly named Noisy Friarbird is common in our district and is characterised by a naked black skinned head and neck and an eye with a bright red iris. The upperparts are dark grey-brown and the underparts much paler, with silver-white feathers on the throat (known as a gorget). The upper bill of these

birds has a triangular protrusion called a casque. Immature birds have pale scalloping on their upperparts. Noisy Friarbirds are found all year round in our district, but numbers can be boosted dramatically during the Autumn migration when the southern populations move north in search of flowering eucalypts. Our woodlands can resonate with their cackling sounds during peak flowering, the timing of which varies from year to year.

The somewhat smaller Little Friarbird has blue-coloured bare facial skin below the eye and a dark brown iris. Overall, the colour is very similar to the Noisy, with grey-brown above and paler below, but with a pale grey nape (back of neck). It is the only Australian friarbird that lacks a casque on the bill. The

Little Friarbird inhabits woodland, riverine forests and even mangroves. Like the Noisy, it is a partial summer migrant to southern states, with flocks heading north over our district generally peaking in April, but some birds are resident here all year.

The Little Friarbird has blue facial skin and lacks a casque.

Both species will regularly visit gardens to feed on flowering shrubs and trees, especially Silky Oaks in spring. If seen well, they are easy to tell apart, but, if seen high in the canopy or in flight, focus on the difference in the head structure (bare versus mostly feathered).

Our annual Mother’s Day stall was an outstanding success, raising much needed funds to support victims of domestic violence. The lucky raffle winners were 1st Annette, 2nd Fiona, 3rd Paul and 4th Tim. A huge thankyou again to everyone involved.

At our meeting earleir this month, we ran our branch QCWA State Photography contest. Numerous entries were displayed in categories ranging from Black & White photos, Birds, Floral Blooms and much more. The photographic display was visually pleasing and enjoyable to see the variety and skills from the entrants.

Thank you to Ann W for organising the photos and the display, also to Dianne for her expertise in judging. The winning photos were judged at the Greater Brisbane District International Day on 25th May. They will progress to the Southern Regional Conference in St George, 7th – 9th June, 2024. Good luck to our entrants.

Our members were delighted to have Francesca from Francesca’s Flowers as a guest speaker. Francesca showed us how to create a beautiful floral arrangement

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Baffies Oan Books is turning two on June 2! To help celebrate the wonderful support we have received from the Samford and surrounds communities, we will be offering 20% off all new books (and a piece of cake) to anyone who pops in to say Happy Birthday.

We also now have a pre-order function on our website, so if there’s a title you are keen not to miss, you can pre-order it from us instead of a crazy billionaire.

Below are two more books that staff are particularly excited about.

HONEY

Isabel Banta

Honey is beautiful. Set in the 90s, a young girl called Amber is rising to fame as a popstar. But her raw talent for singing is not enough to distinguish her from all of her multitalented peers, so Amber begins to embrace an image of exaggerated sexuality and femininity. The writing is so lyrical and emotional, maturing as Amber does, exploring her struggle with body-image and the complexity but importance of female friendships. I felt like I was right beside Amber the whole time, navigating what it’s like to be in the public eye and questioning whether she deserves to be there. It’s a story about first love, familial relationships, and stardom. Everything about it is beautiful and vivid. Reading this book feels like basking in summer.

Honey is released on July 30, but you can preorder your copy now.

Stella Whitehouse

HOSPITAL Sanya Rushdie

Shortlisted for The Stella Prize and now longlisted for The Miles Franklin, this is an exquisite gem of a book. It may be only a slim volume but it packs a huge punch. Sanya tells us the story of a young woman sliding back into psychosis. Unlike Graeme

Simsion and Anne Buist’s latest novel

The Glass House which takes us into the world of a Mental Health Hospital via the experiences of a young doctor, Hospital is told to us through the words of the patient herself. It is fascinating, slightly unsettling but overall, profoundly moving. If you’re dipping your toes into some of the prize lists this year, make sure you don’t miss this one. Totally unique. 5 stars. Hospital is available now.

TABLE FOR TWO Amor Towles

The novels of Amor Towles have always felt, to me, a little like reading a multitude of short stories or vignettes that hang from the stem of a central plot. If you loved A Gentleman in Moscow , you will understand what I mean. He seems to delight in the rich detail of tangential stories to help build complex and moving characters.

Needless to say, I was excited to read this new collection of (not so short) short stories. The first half of the book contains beautifully crafted tales from New York in the 1990s, while the second section is a novella that picks up on the life of Eve, a central character in his first novel, The Rules of Civility. Amor Towles is a consummate storyteller who will draw you in to his tales of beauty and ordinariness. We will be reading Table for Two in our Last Sunday Bookclub in June, if you would like to join us. Table for Two is available now.

Fiona Taylor

EDENGLASSIE

Melissa Lucashenko

Melissa Lucashenko’s Edenglassi, explores two periods of Brisbane’s history: the mid 1800s; and 2024. The book’s title reflects the one-time name for the part of Meanjin/ Brisbane where the book is set.

In 2024, elderly Yagara woman Granny Eddie Blanket trips outside the Maritime Museum. Malaysian students help her up, not whites, as her activist granddaughter Winona notes. Eddie is cared for by Dr

Johnny, a recently revealed Murri. A white journalist grabs a chance for media glory with stories from “Queensland’s Oldest Aboriginal”, focusing on the upcoming bicentennial (or “John Oxley’s two centuries of criminal trespass”). Eddie basks in her celebrity, embellishing of her ancestral tales.

The novel transitions to the 1850s when Yugambeh man Mulanyin falls for Nita, a Ngugi woman claimed by the progressive Petrie family. He joins in Tom Petrie’s land search. Though Petrie seeks permission to settle on Turrbal lands unlike other whites, Lucashenko hints Petrie was not the savour described in Tom Petrie’s Reminiscences of Early Queensland.

When optimistic Mulanyin witnesses the public hanging of the leader, Dundalli, he is appalled. The hangman, a convicted rapist, botches the execution. Mulanyin learns “British pluck and progress” materialises in bullets, pox, poisoned flour, stolen land and stolen children. Back in 2024, Winona, Granny Eddie and Doctor Johnny, struggle to come to terms with this legacy.

“We can’t be sunk in bitterness,” Eddie tells her granddaughter, despite white people’s “never-ending provocations”. Winona, struggling to find a job and a place to live, is enraged by the conciliatory narratives of the bureaucracy. She’s for direct action, revolution, a Treaty, more public housing. Dr Johnny wants reconciliation too, but his is a considered, by-the-book approach.

“How come we gotta reconcile anything?” Winona retorts. “There was more dead on the Queensland frontier than Aussies killed in World War One.”

Lucashenko delves into how love helps healing, and what it is to be accountable to another person, a family, a culture, and a place. Edenglassie is alive with First Nations languages, rituals and spiritual understanding. The ancestors deliver the shocking, climactic revelation. This intergenerational novel challenges any version of history that, “looks in the other direction at what’s easy to see”. It reminds us it didn’t have to be like this.

TRAFFIC ALERTS

EATONS CROSSING ROAD & LILLEY ROAD INTERSECTION

Major works will be commencing at Eatons Crossing Road and Lilley Road intersection, Cashmere. Works are scheduled to begin late May 2024 and will take approximately 10 months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting. Works will be delayed if wet weather occurs.

Motorists are advised traffic management will be in place while works are underway. From mid-July 2024 areas of the intersection will be reduced to a single lane shuttle flow, under 24/7 traffic control for short periods to allow for road widening works.

Works will be undertaken, Monday to Friday between 6am to 6pm with occasional night works and weekend works as required. Traffic management will remain in place 24/7.

Motorists can expect delays and increases in travel time when temporary lane closures and traffic management are implemented within the work zone. Traffic controllers, portable traffic control signals, reduced speed limits, temporary lighting, road

signage and variable message signs will be in place to advise of the changed traffic conditions and to ensure motorist and roadworker safety.

Please allow extra time for travel during these works.

Contact the Community Liaison team on 1800 314 756 or ssrrsp@tmr.qld.gov.au for further information.

CAMP MOUNTAIN & SAMFORD ROADS INTERSECTION

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) would like to advise works will soon commence to improve safety at the intersection between Camp Mountain Road and Samford Road at Camp Mountain. This is the intersection closest to Ferny Grove. These works are part of the Samford Road safety improvements project.

Construction commenced for this project in early March 2024 to improve safety and reduce the rate and severity of crashes along a 1.5-km section of Samford Road, between Lomandra Access Road picnic area, Ferny Hills, and Camp Mountain Road, including at the Camp Mountain Road intersection.

To progress works, a temporary closure will be implemented preventing access between Camp Mountain Road and Samford Road at the intersection closest to Ferny Grove. This access closure is required for approximately three weeks from 10 June 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting. Samford Road will remain open.

This Camp Mountain Road access closure will enable TMR to complete significant works at this intersection in the most time and cost-effective manner.

During this time, access between Camp Mountain Road and Samford Road will only be available at the intersection closest to Samford Village.

Emergency vehicles will be given priority access through the work site and through the closed Camp Mountain Road access whenever possible. TMR will update local emergency service providers about the closure, access arrangements and alternative route.

Please contact the Samford Road safety improvements project team on (07) 5451 7055 or email northcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au.
