Samford Arts Trail starts this weekend

CAMP
TRIUMPH
A REWARDING LOOK BEYOND FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Like many young women her age, 21-yr-old Samford Valley local, Sinead Skorka-Brennan dreamed of finding the perfect job. One that would build her confidence but also give her independence and job satisfaction. In a world where preconceptions about disability are still an issue, she was finding employment opportunities really difficult to come by. You see, Sinead is a young woman with Down Syndrome and because of this, she is often treated like a child, instead of a young adult.
Anticipation is building for the Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios, commencing this weekend and continuing for the next four weekends in June. Thirty five local artists will display their talents throughout the Samford Valley, Samford Village, Yugar through to Warner, Cedar Creek, Clear Mountain and Dayboro. Join the talented artists and artisans for a great day out (or several!) in our beautiful region.
From Camp Mountain to Mount Panorama, Murray Dowsett returned a winner from the 2023 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour production car race over the Easter weekend. The Bathurst 6 Hour is Australia’s longest and most prestigious race for production cars.
Dowsett was joined by talented young drivers Mitchell Maddren and Lachlan Bloxsom in his Lone Star Hire 11Racing Toyota 86. It marks the Camp Mountainbased team’s fourth visit to the famed circuit.

You can pick up a Studio Guide (which includes a map) from the Slab Hut in Samford, Information Centres and selected retail outlets in the area, or head to www. creativesamford.com/2019-arts-trail/ for a downloadable digital version. The Guide features the artists exhibiting in the Trails, as well as a great range of workshops on offer for you to enjoy.
Ironically, Sinead is an accomplished gymnast, having represented Australia at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March this year, bringing home four medals, two of them gold in bar and beam events. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Dickson Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. You would think these achievements alone would open doors for her – but unfortunately not.
The team put Bloxsom in the car for qualifying where he set the fastest ever lap of the intimidating Mount Panorama circuit for a Class D vehicle.
For the first time this year, the Arts Trail will be working with MBRIT and Mountain Wine Tours to offer a ‘Wine and Art’ bus tour. This will be a great day out with wine tasting and food experiences, while enjoying a great variety of local art. Tours can be booked on the Mountain Wine Tours or Creative Samford websites.
in the wild - from beautiful big lions and
who’ve supported me in doing this, Lockie and Mitch. It’s surreal, I never expected to be in this position.”
Race day saw Maddren start, followed by Dowsett and finally Bloxsom as the team completed a near-flawless race. The 11Racing Toyota 86 went on to not only win Class D by four laps, but finish an impressive 15th outright against many more powerful vehicles.
Dowsett was quick to pay tribute to his co-drivers, crew and family in their support for his Bathurst campaign: “I can’t thank them enough – my team, my wife and family
One of the artists featured this year is Danielle B Latta, owner of Running Duck Studio in Dayboro. This year, Danielle is undertaking an Endangered Project, whereby artwork will be created to draw attention to the plight of many animals
Enter the award-winning and critically acclaimed ABC documentary series Employable Me, which followed the stories of nine people with disabilities as they battled to find work. The documentary, which was aired in April, aimed to show potential employers the capable people behind their condition and highlight the importance for people to feel valued. Throughout the series, participants worked with experts, job coaches and their families to uncover their skills and talents and match them to roles that harnessed their strengths.
Anglicare Symes Grove Manager Sharon Marsden said Sinead had been a welcome addition to the team at the home. “We were thrilled to offer Sinead the chance to follow her passion of working in the aged care sector. She is a valued member of our team here at Anglicare and brings a lot of joy, compassion and empathy in the way she interacts with our residents.”
Dowsett, with team mechanic Kristy McAndrew, built the Toyota 86 car in Camp Mountain where he runs the Lonestar Hire equipment rental business that backed his Bathurst attempt.
Creative Samford Inc. is the organiser of the Arts Trail, and Coordinator Ann Russell is hoping that this year’s Trails will attract new visitors as well as those returning to experience them again. “This unique art experience benefits not only the artists, but many other local businesses, with visitor
First run in 2016, the Bathurst 6 Hour has become a modern-day classic. Teams can allocate two or three drivers per car, and drivers have a maximum allowance of three hour’s continuous driving time. Drivers are allowed no more than three and a half hours’ total driving time across the entire
Sinead believes that the series has made people more aware of what it’s like to have a disability and try to find a job. “It’s so much harder to even be invited for a job interview. Being in the Employable Me series was a huge opportunity for me to show that everyone has different qualities and strengths, disability or not,” she said.
numbers increasing every year,” she said. The trails will run from 10am to 4pm over the first four weekends in June, with the fifth weekend playing host to some great workshops. This is your chance to get your friends together and enjoy a great day out in the country.

race, and must be out of the car for over an hour before they can jump back in the driver’s seat.
Each car must also undertake a specific number of compulsory pit stops based on their class.
Asked what she liked most about her job, Sinead said, “I like helping other people. That is why I had the idea to work in Aged Care already since High School. I find it most rewarding when I am able to make the residents happy and can help to make their lives a little bit easier. I find it very rewarding to get to know each resident and know what their needs are and how they like something done. It makes me happy when they are happy.”
For more information, see the Creative Samford Website, keep up to date on Facebook www.facebook.com/ samfordartstrail, or contact Ann Russell at trails19@creativesamford.com.
Event entrants are divided into six classes from Class X ultimate performance vehicles to Class E compact cars. Class D production cars include a broad range of sporty road cars priced around the $30-$50k mark when new, opening up the field for regular car lovers to experience the Bathurst rush. Qualifying cars must be listed on the event eligibility list.
This year, eight cars raced in the Class D event, with makes including Toyota, Mazda, BMW, VW, Honda and Subaru.
After their stellar performance at Bathurst, the 11Racing team is scheduled to next head trackside for Round 3 of the 2023 Queensland Production Car series at Queensland Raceway on June 4th.

SDPPA NOTICE
DA APPLICATION
At the last two SDPPA monthly community meetings, members and local residents voiced their concerns about the proposed development on the corner of Main Street, which also incorporates the corner of Junction Street.
The SDPPA membership agreed to engage an independent Town Planner to review the DA application and respond accordingly. This decision is based on the SDPPA’s objective to act as a representative on behalf of the residents and ratepayers of our community and to liaise, and where necessary, advocate on their behalf with government and statutory bodies, in matters pertaining to the progress and protection of the Samford Valley and surrounding districts.
The advertisements appearing on Page 9 of this edition and Page 9 of the 14/04/23 edition are not Village Pump or SDPPA advertisements as suggested on social media, but booked and paid for independently by the Junction Street residents group.
If you are interested in this matter or have something important to raise with the community, why don’t you come along to our monthly meeting?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
MULTI-STOREY DEVELOPMENT
Everything proposed in DA/2033/4057 is already well catered for in the village. This application offers nothing new or innovative. The multi-storey building design does not fit in the rural setting of the village area. If approved, this project will negatively impact most of the already struggling small, local businesses. More traffic density will occur and choke the roundabout and the residential side streets.
Appropriate development is not a problem, inappropriate development and location definitely is.
If this application is allowed to proceed over the top of occupied residential land and homes as per the proposal, it will open the flood gates to more inappropriate development in the Samford Valley. Submissions (objections) re this DA are now open between 17 April and 10 May 2023.

Vale Lyndsay Walter Barton

12th October 1926 – 5th April 2023
As a volunteer support driver for Lyndsay and his wife Patricia (Pat), I was captivated by Lyndsay’s intellect and sharp wit. I never tired of his pioneering stories filled with enthusiasm for improving education for our most outback communities and of raising a family on the ‘smell of an oily rag’!
Lyndsay met Pat at a local dance and were married December 1948. His first posting as a school Principal at the tender age of 19 was Coowonga. There were a further 9 postings to various outback schools until his last posting at Grovely State School in 1976. Lyndsay was able to successfully transform the regularly vandalised Grovely State School through innovative school programs and engaging the local parents in a school committee.
In 1980, Lyndsay and Pat moved to Samford Village. Retirement 6 year later included international travel, the Samford Lions Club and Probus. He was also a contestant on ‘Sale of the Century’ and ‘Play your Cards Right’ with Ugly Dave Grey. His achievements included a Life Membership of the Queensland Association of State School Principal, District Governor for the Lion’s Club, a Mensa member, and an average golf handicap of 11.
Even in his 90s, Lyndsay was still keen to participate in making improvements in his

local community. As a part of the Samford Support Network’s program, it was Lyndsay and Pat that prompted the idea of issuing a medical alert system to support locals in staying in their own homes longer, kindly donated by the local Bendigo Bank.
“Lyndsay and Pat were an inspiration and delight to be around. Lyndsay was front and centre in making a video to demonstrate the alert system for fellow locals.” said Barbara Kienast former President of the Samford Support Network.
My word limit will never do justice to this devoted family man’s life-long achievements and commitment to his students and community. Lyndsay was an eloquent writer so I will let him speak for himself:
“My Life has been a wonderful journey spanning eighty-five (now 96) years. For sixty-four of those years (now 75 years) I have been accompanied by the love of my life, Pat, and her patience and perseverance, her undoubted abilities at whatever she puts her mind to and her love of our family and me have made that journey possible. The greatest adornment to that life have been our children, closely followed by their families.”

SOPHIA’S ARTISTRY REWARDED

Samford Local and 3rd year UQ Physiotherapy student Sophia Crisante from Premier Gymnastics, has been selected for the QLD Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Team to compete at the upcoming Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast. While this will be Sophia’s fourth National Championships, it’s her first as a Senior International.
Sophia is excited to be competing alongside some incredible teammates, such as Tokyo Olympian and 2022
Sophia’s last Nationals was in 2021, where her QLD level 10 team won Team Gold. Individually, Sophia was awarded Silver in Vault, Bronze in Bars, Bronze in All around, as well as the prestigious Floor Artistry Award. The highlight, however, was being named WAG Team Captain alongside Georgia Godwin.
In 2022 Sophia missed the individual season due to injury but was part of the National Clubs Championships last September, where her Level 10 Team took home Silver and her Club, Premier Gymnastics took home its first ever WAG National Club of the Year Award.
The Australian Gymnastics Championships are being held at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre from 7th - 21st May and will showcase 6 different Gym sports. If you love watching gymnastics, this is a great opportunity to support our QLD teams.

Schedules and tickets are available on the Australian Gymnastics Championships website.

The Samford Area Aircraft Action Group (SAAAG) continue to work hard with multiple stakeholders and invite all residents impacted by aircraft noise and pollution to attend our May meeting at the SCHUB on Wednesday 3rd May 7.00pm. New attendees very welcome - please RSVP to our email address below.

Over the last month there have been several important actions regarding air traffic in our area, including:
Airservices Australia (ASA) conducted a “drop in” session at the SCHUB on Thursday April 27th from 2pm -7pm. ASA was supposed to engage with the community and keep us all informed of their upcoming Noise Action Plan which essentially means Noise Sharing! Disappointingly, ASA did not communicate with the Village Pump before the relevant deadline had passed, so we needed to rely on social media and word of mouth to get the information out there.
As we know, this is a “complaints” driven process, therefore our concern is that ASA will receive less feedback from
the community because notification was not widely communicated. Let’s not allow that to happen!

The Australian Government has announced the establishment of the Brisbane Airport Community Airspace Advisory Board (AAB). The AAB is an ongoing, independent, community-based consultation body that will attempt to ensure that ASA fully implement the recommendations from their Brisbane Airport Post Implementation Review. In other words, AAB are keeping ASA accountable – we hope!
The Chair, Mr Ron Brent, called for volunteers to fill five community representative board member positions. The Chair has stated he is confident small changes to flight paths could result in significant impacts/improvements. A number of SAAAG members have nominated for the community representative positions, but we are yet to hear whether they have been successful. We will let you know when we find out how to directly lobby AAB.
Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance (BFPCA) is also lobbying hard on our behalf. Major planning is underway for the first physical protest to be held on 10th June - save the date and join us. More information
available www.bfpca.org.au or Facebook Group: Brisbane Airport Aircraft Noise.
Let’s hope that some of these recent changes can result in real progress in minimising the impact of aircraft in the Samford area.
GET INVOLVED
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting at 7pm Wednesday 3rd May. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any suggestions or concerns via our contact email contactSAAAG@gmail.com

Once again, we would like to thank the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association for their ongoing support.

One Last Ambulance Wish
Forever memories become even more important for those of us facing a terminal illness. Charity program Ambulance Wish is all too aware of the value of these key life experiences, working to fulfil the final wishes of Queenslanders with a life-limiting condition. Ambulance Wish provides the coordination, transport and clinical care needed to help those in palliative care experience their final wish.
Living in with her daughter’s family in Camp Mountain, Zdenka Zlamal engaged the help of Ambulance Wish to shore up her last wish; visiting Mooloolaba Beach.
“Really that was fantastic and I couldn’t wish for anything better. That was the day I’ll never forget and that will go with me,” Zdenka said.
Accompanied by her daughter Janette, son-in-law Damien, son Paul and her grandchildren Stanley, Maxwell and Zoe, the Ambulance Wish volunteer paramedics ensured that the day would be memorable for the whole family.
“When the ambulance came, the kids had a ball in it. Two of them pretended to be doctors and looked after me as I went into the ambulance. They went through every drawer and cupboard,” Zdekna laughed.
At the beach a nurse and professional photographer were ready for Zdenka, gifting her a handmade quilt as part of the Ambulance Wish package. The crew were on hand all day to ensure she made the most of her last beach experience. Providing beach shade and a beach wheelchair as well as organising transport, Zdenka was able to experience the ocean again.
“They helped me stand in the water. I could feel the waves wash over my feet, and it felt like magic,” Zdenka said.
When Zdekna requested a short beach walk, she was willingly pushed in her wheelchair along the sand. “The paramedics

kept saying throughout the day, ‘Zdenka, this day is all about you, nobody else. Tell us what you wish for and we’ll make that wish happen,’” she said.
Samford Golden Valley Pony Club

A lot of recent work at the SGVPC is finally coming together, with thanks to Qld Governments Active Game Day Grant, RACQ Active Community Grant and QLD governments Planting, Sport and Recreational Disaster Recovery Grant and the Trees for the Queens Jubilee Grant. All this would not be possible without the help and assistance from both Nikki Boyd and Peter Dutton, our local members.
Zdenka’s daughter Janette was extremely grateful for the efforts of the Ambulance Wish team in creating this experience for the whole family to remember.
“When you’re a carer you do a lot of organising and it was really nice to have someone else coordinate a wonderful experience for all of us,” Janette said. “Ambulance Wish organised everything and they made it really easy. Everyone involved gave their own time for this experience and they were so lovely about it. They kept checking in on my mum’s comfort and were so patient with us.”
Based on a service provided in The Netherlands for immobile, terminally ill patients, Ambulance Wish Queensland is the first to bring this service to Australia. Paramedics and nurses willingly volunteer their whole day to make these last and lasting wishes come true.
Zdenka still smiles about feeling the sand between her toes and sharing an ice cream with her family. To those who enabled this experience, she remains eternally grateful.
“The paramedics were fantastic. They made this beach trip really special and I thank them.”

Details will be on the clubs Facebook page.
The new course will enable the club to utilise the jumps for training and competitions from 45cm to 1 Star level. Next Muster Sunday 28th May at 8am.
LEARNING ABOUT ANZAC DAY
ANZAC Day is celebrated on 25th April each year. It is a day to remember Australian and New Zealand soldiers who have served and died for their countries. Learning about ANZAC Day through hands-on and real-life experiences helps us to understand the importance of this national day.

“Anzac Day is to remember, respect and never forget.” Daniel.

We welcomed Marc Orreal, the RSL Brisbane North Deputy President to our Kindy classroom. He told us about the ANZAC Spirit.

“Anzac Spirit is like building a house with bricks. The more bricks the stronger it will be.” Marley.

We worked together to create a Memorial Wreath with poppies and rosemary sprigs. These two plants are plentiful in the fields of Gallipoli.
“Our special ANZAC visitor gave us poppies.” Grace R.
We used oats and golden syrup to make ANZAC biscuits! Originally, these biscuits were made and sent to the soldiers by their family members.
“We made ANZAC biscuits to bring home to share. I shared mine with Dad.” Theodore.
Some of us joined in the Samford ANZAC Day Service by marching along the Avenue of Honour and laying our handmade wreath during the service.
“Papa wears a special uniform on ANZAC Day. I want his hat.” Finn.
We are so proud of our Samford Kindy children actively contributing and taking

Samford Museum
During preparations for the Samford Museum’s recent ANZAC day commemoration, members noted recollections by families telling their memories of war time in our districts, which have been published in Samford Reminiscences books. (SR)

Some of these recollections are reproduced here.
“There was a Commonwealth Government Rifle Range in the Burnside at Kobble Creek, shooting west to east, but as the population grew in the east (what would be Harrisons Pocket and Whiteside) they found it necessary to change the shooting from south to north. That would be shooting towards Burpengary – Narangba area as there was no population on the northern side of the dangerous area. After WW1 and between the two wars, it was changed from Mason’s property, the same targets, but shooting into the mountain area. Later it was disbanded altogether.” SR Vol 1.
“One of my earliest memories is of Mr Alex Gordon from the mountain (Clear Mt) coming to our home to say “Good Bye” he was going to the 1914 war. Sorry to say he did not return.” SR Vol 2.
“Dwyers Lookout at Mt Nebo is named for the Dwyer family. John James Dwyer had spent four years in active service as
a machine gunner during WW1 in Egypt and France. JJ, as he was known, became a Soldier Settler at the Highlands.” SR Vol 3.
“During the war, in 1940s, over 50 Army men camped on our (the Oliver family) property and built a new Camp Mt bridge over Samford Creek, replacing one which was unrepairable.” SR Vol 2.
“In 1942, Jim Denniston (of Branch Creek) joined the Army and served in New Guinea during WW2. After the war he returned to the farm for a short time then went to work

second application, the recruitment officer reminded him he could not go because he was employed in a reserved occupation. The youth replied he was unemployed. The officer didn’t hesitate again saying “You’re in! You might regret it young fellow! So into the Army I went.” SR Vol 5.

ANZAC Day Memorial Planting
This year, to commemorate ANZAC Day, Bunya’s Christine and Darryl Martin decided to plant a lasting memorial in their native garden. Christine said, “We wanted to remember every day of the year, those Australians who gave their lives in all wars and we felt this was our own personal memorial”. In their local nursery, they found the ideal native plant – the RSL Spirit of ANZAC, a hybrid grevillea.

Samford Area Mens Shed

It comes around every year on 25th April. The nation stands still in dawn services and throughout the day in respectful gratitude and commemoration of the first time that Australian and New Zealand troops set foot on the shores of Gallipoli on the 25th day of April 1915. ANZAC Day is the day that we commemorate those Australians and New Zealanders who fought, were wounded and who gave their lives in military conflict, not only during the First World War but also in all military actions thereafter.
This year was no different. Because of the selfless sacrifice of Australian and New Zealander men and women in all these conflicts, the people of Samford Valley, like the rest of the Australian population, stopped what they were doing last Tuesday and remembered.

The men at Samford Area Mens Shed (SAMS) also stopped what they were doing on Tuesday. After all: there are many men in the Mens Shed movement who also answered the call and took up duties, not only in defence of this country but also in defence of the right of people in other parts of the world to live safely in peace and harmony with each other. The men at SAMS, like everyone else, are able to gather freely without fear of persecution and meet in the Shed not only to enjoy hands-on crafty activities but also friendship, fellowship and shoulder to shoulder companionship and support.
Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along to the SAMS Shed on any Tuesday morning at 9am and see what SAMS is all about. We’re at the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale - just near the high voltage power tower. Want to know more? Visit the SAMS website at samfordshed.org.au or email samssecretary1@gmail.com

STUDENTS TO LEAD COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

High school students at Samford Valley Steiner School are the driving force behind a new festival to be held in September with the theme of the Odyssey.

Drama teacher, Nicole Ostini saw a need for an uplifting, inspiring community event following the past few years of pandemic restrictions. She asked the student body, “If given the opportunity to participate in a student led experience or festival, what world would you want to create?”
Nicole had the backing of the school leadership to run a high school focused festival, but she wanted a student led experience, not just teachers imposing their own ideas on our teenagers as to how they should feel now.
“We knew how powerful student voice can be if given the right spaces and platforms to engage. We also wanted our community, our parents, alumni and friends to be involved,” says Nicole.
Ideas were thrown around, discussions initiated and then Year 12 student, Mehdi Shajirati came forward with the idea of directing a performance based on Homer’s Odyssey, as part of his Year 12 Senior Research Project. The Odyssey is one of the core texts of the schools’ literary curriculum and is a story about coming home. Home to one’s self, to one’s heart, and to one’s people; so a fitting theme for a community festival.
The school has engaged with the wider arts community and will welcome Queensland’s Dead Puppets Society as artist in residence this year. They will assist the students in making life-size puppets for the festival.
It is hoped that the wider Samford community also engages in the festival. Humanities teacher, Delaney Crawley is collaborating with Nicole and the High School faculty to bring this festival to life and will be writing regular updates for the school’s website and Facebook page. We look forward to updating you on this interesting project as it takes shape.

HAVE YOU SPOTTED A KOALA LATELY?

Queensland’s koala populations are classified by the Australian Government as endangered and koalas in the wild face a series of threats to their continued survival. Wild Koala Day occurs on 3 May and it reminds us of the need to protect our wild koala population and to do what we can to support their habitat.
Parks and forests help to protect koala habitat, but much of this habitat in Queensland is located on privately-owned land outside of these areas. The longterm conservation of koalas will therefore depend largely on private property owners managing their land to retain or improve koala habitat. This can include planting or maintaining trees on your property that provide food and shelter.

Koalas are strictly leaf eaters, needing to consume up to 500g a day and have strong preferences for certain eucalypt species. In our local district, the primary koala food

trees are Forest Red Gum or Queensland Blue Gum, Tallowwood and the Small-fruited Grey Gum. Trees that can provide a secondary food source of habitat are Ironbark, Spotted Gum, Bloodwood or Brush Box trees. Information on these tree species has been provided by the Pine Rivers Community Nursery at Eatons Hill who can provide plant stock and advice on what tree species should be selected to suit a local soil type or landform.
Besides protecting and increasing koala habitat, we can help koalas survive by preventing dogs and cats attacking koalas, being aware of koalas crossing roads at night, and seeking assistance if you see a koala that may appear to be suffering from disease or injury.
Local volunteer organisations that can provide koala assistance are: RSPCA: 1300264625 (24hr) All native wildlife; Pine Rivers Koala Care: 0401 350 799 (24hr) All

Food gardening tips for May
Finally, it’s cooling down. Here are some tips to make the most of the season in your veg and herb garden.
Ideal to plant are:
• Sugarsnap and snow peas – Use climbing variety to get more sun and yield.
• Chard, coriander, loose leaf lettuce and cabbage – Cabbage needs the highest fertility.

• Potato, radish, turnip, garlic – Allow plenty of space for potatoes.
• Broccoli and cauliflower – High fertility needs and companion plant with coriander.

Okay to plant are:
• Climbing beans – Purple king beans are my favourite.
• Strawberries – Inter plant with leeks or spring onions to reduce slugs.
• Basil – Sunny spot.
In our Gleanr planting calendar, you will discover an additional 90 vegetable and herb crops that are suitable for planting during the month of May in our local climate. Detailed growing instructions are provided for every crop including tips to deal with pest and diseases and companion planting.
Growing food in the month of May is an ideal time for a large number of common veg crops. The excess heat is gone, but as we move to winter, there is the possibility of low night temps, even frost in low areas, but this is unlikely until June.
Key things to consider are:

• Incorporate flowers into your patch such as violas, calendula, sunflowers and nasturtiums. Marigolds are ideal companions for many crops. All these flowers thrive in cooler times.
• Make active use of your compost by using it when you plant seedlings into your patch, this gives them extra vitality in their young and fragile stage.
• Increase the density of your planting and make use of climbing frames for suitable crops.
Bringing beauty to your food garden through flowers, bird baths and mixing the colours of plants within your beds such as different coloured chard or lettuce brings another layer of vitality to the crops and joy to yourself. Allocate a bit of time each day for contemplation in the garden and be sure to have love at the centre of your thoughts.
The plants respond to your good vibes. For more resources on having a thriving food garden, visit the Gleanr platform at www.gleanr.com.au, providing:

TALES OF LIZARDS IN SAMFORD VALLEY

It sometimes surprises people that our group has talks on fauna, as well as flora, but we like to take a holistic approach to the environment, knowing that plants and animals are highly inter-dependent. At our next meeting on Tuesday 2 May in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford, 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start, we are privileged to welcome back Steve Wilson, a Brisbane-based wildlife photographer and herpetologist. Steve has authored or co-authored twelve reptile books which have received four Whitely Awards for excellence in natural history.

For more than 30 years, Steve has worked at the Queensland Museum, educating the public, identifying specimens and raising awareness about Australia’s unique biological heritage and how to conserve it. His presentation is entitled ‘Tales of lizards in Samford Valley’.
Lizards are in our bushland, our gardens and our lounge rooms. Using his stunning photography (he is a former Australian

Geographic photographer of the year), Steve will take us on a tour of the local lizards of the Samford Valley and adjacent mountains, including what some of them really get up to when no one is watching and provide a few clues for identification. This is a talk not to be missed (visitors welcome)!
We encourage attendees to bring along labelled native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash) while socialising.
At our April meeting, Francis Rigby and Ross Neller took us through the trials and tribulations of growing Finger Limes commercially. Their 5-acre farm in Closeburn was established on cleared land using trees grown from cuttings. They use drip irrigation to water the plants and sugar cane mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture. By 2022 they were producing enough fruit to sell commercially at Rocklea markets.
They chose Finger Limes as a crop because they fetch high prices (over $40 per kilo wholesale) and have a long shelf life of 2.5 months if stored correctly (at about 10°C). Their main variety is Champagne Red, which can produce up to 5kg of limes per tree annually. They are now experimenting with grafting and fixing some issues with water supply and nutrients. They plan to introduce some other trees into the plantings to provide shade (Finger Limes grow naturally at the edge of rainforests, so prefer some shade). We thank Francis and Ian for a very informative talk.

PLANTING AREA EXTENDED
Monthly Bushcare

On Sunday 16 April one team of volunteers planted some advanced plants in larger pots along the Eco-Trail below the powerlines and a few more at the top of the bank just behind (this is known as revegetation zone P4, which is being planted incrementally). The trees included a very large Scrub Teak (Toechima tenax), kindly donated by volunteer Ian Ferrier, four large macadamias, Flintwood (Scolopia brownie, which is a host plant for the Bordered Rustic butterfly) and Round Lime (Citrus australis, which was propagated from seed collected from revegetation zone P2).
The photo shows the large Scrub Teak being coaxed into the ground. Other volunteers continued the relentless battle with weeds on the lower section of zone P4 that was planted last year. These included Madeira Vine, Creeping Inch Weed, Dutchman’s Pipe, Neonotonia (‘glycine’) and Guinea Grass.

Our next monthly bushcare is earlier than usual because of the clash with Mother’s Day on the second Sunday. On 7 May from 2pm to 4pm we will be continuing our war on weeds and possibly planting some tubestock already in hand (if we can’t get them in the ground in the meantime). New volunteers are always welcome.
We are still looking for someone to provide afternoon tea and coffee at the picnic site using the Eco-Corridor equipment (vacuum flasks, etc.). In the meantime, we will continue to operate on a BYO basis because our volunteers love to socialise after 2 hours of hard work.
All Systems Go at TMT

With the National Premier League Women’s (NPLW) season just kicking off and the Liberty A-league season just finishing, our team have been very busy in the women’s football space.
Practice Manager Sharn and Receptionist Georgia have just completed their football season with the Brisbane Roar. The 20-round season unfortunately didn’t go their way, finishing 9th. They will both now compete in the NPLW during the off-season of the Liberty A-league.

Meanwhile, Yanek has just finished his season with the Brisbane Roar as head of medical before continuing his work as Head Physiotherapist for the Football Queensland Academy and Future Matilda’s. Zarni has also been busy working alongside Yanek at the Football Queensland Academy as the assistant physiotherapist. She is about to travel to Mongolia with the Junior Matilda’s, assisting the team as they aim to qualify for the Under 17’s AFC Asian Cup in 2024. We wish them all the best for their upcoming seasons!
Volunteers planting the large Scrub Teak Education program
On Wednesday 26 April, we worked with students from Ms Alex Leslie’s Grade 4 class at Steiner School, who learnt about local native flora and fauna along Samford Creek, which runs directly behind the school. This is a practical outdoor lesson related to the curriculum unit on local area mapping.

2023 Brisbane District Bowls Association (BDBA) Ladies Autumn Pennants Grand Final for the Flag (St Lucia Saints v Chermside Gold) and the Plate (Windsor Wombats v Samford Powerful Owls) was played at Ferny Grove Bowls Club on Friday 21 April. Let’s hope for great news of a win in the next edition.
2023 Tyre Power Everton Hill Cup. Unfortunately, Samford Bowls Club went down to Chermside Bowls Club in the semifinal. We were pleased with our season with Chermside the only club we weren’t able to conquer. Chermside will play Aspley Gold in the final.

Samford Men’s Novice Singles Semi Finals. David Englebright won against David McDaniel and Martyn Hewett winning over Ian Edmondson.
Tuesday afternoon social bowls is a friendly group. Mostly gentleman, but you will always find a few ladies willing to give the men a competitive game. Some of these gentlemen are a lesson for all of us on how they continue to play the game they love. They don’t let a bout of illness, visits in and out of hospital or arthritic hands, hips or knees stop them from playing the game they love. There are many aides available to bowlers to assist our members to continue playing - Bowling Arms for those who can no longer bend over or have difficulty holding a bowl; Steady Sticks for balance support; and Lifters for those with back problems. We hope bowlers will take advantage of the aides available as there is so much to gain from a game with friends in the beautiful scenic Samford valley.

GLOSSY LAUREL
The glossy laurel ( Cryptocaryia laevigata) is an understory shrub or small tree that grows naturally in riverine and dry rainforests from Richmond in NSW to Cairns in North Queensland. Bushy in appearance, the plant can reach 6m in height, has a narrow trunk diameter with dark brown bark that is generally smooth although it does have vertically raised bumps.
As its name suggests, its elliptical leaves are glossy – bright green on the upper surface and paler below – with smooth edges and a long, blunt tip. Each leaf appears to have three veins - a prominent mid-rib with two lateral veins. During spring and early summer, small, cream flowers are formed on panicles slightly shorter than the leaves. Their scent makes up for their small size. These are followed by small, orange to red fruit that ripen between January and May. The single, woody seed is pointed with obvious ribs.

Overall, the general features of the glossy laurel make it a good ornamental plant for

medium sized gardens. It is particularly suited to well-drained, shaded and semishaded areas, mirroring its rainforest ‘home’, and can be grown as a screening hedge. Its bushiness provides protection for small, nesting birds whilst late summer sees fruiteating species.

HEALTHY, HAPPY AND SUSTAINABLE PETS
In the next few months we’ll see animals doing their thing at the Samford Show and the Ekka and they all seem so happy and healthy. While we’re not always able to attain perfect breeding lines with our household pets, we certainly want them to be happy and healthy. Indeed, our ‘mixed bag’ dog Goldy is far from pedigree yet at 16 human years is ticking over very healthily - cross paws that continues!
Green Street has a nice checklist which you may like to scan to see how your pet fares with not just being a healthy pet but also helping the planet to be healthy. Just some of the checklist includes:

• Our pet is exercised appropriately.
• We ensure our pet eats nutritional food with minimal additives.
• The products we purchase to assist with pet care are manufactured sustainably (eg. food bowls, leashes, kennels, food).

• Pet roaming is prevented so as not to interfere with the neighbourhood and the environment.
• Where relevant, our pet is desexed so as to stop inappropriate breeding and the growth of the feral animal population.

The Pet Advisory Council of Australia helped out with the list so there’s been some expert advice given to make sure the list is as good as we can get.
If you’d like to add ideas or find out more about sustainable living and sustainable pet care, you could go to www.greenstreet. net.au and join the almost four thousand households and businesses that are putting their best foot forward to reduce their carbon footprint.

Howard NielsenFridays at the SCHUB HUMILITY
The Good Stuff Ideas Forum on Friday 28 April at 3.00-ish is discussing the concept of Humility, a very appropriate topic after ANZAC Day and before Labour Day, days which honour our defence service people and those who struggled to gain better working conditions and fair pay for workers. These humble people thought of others’ good before they thought of their own.
Examples of humility stand out in literature like Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and Albert Barnett (Bert) Facey in A Fortunate Life. The fictional Atticus humbly, quietly maintained his values despite loud racist opposition in the trial of Tom. In the rabid dog incident, he would not let his friends eulogise his expert marksmanship to his children. His commitment to truth saw him refuse to cover up the incidents leading to the death of bigoted Bob Ewell, though they effected his children.
“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”
Australian Bert Facey (1894 to 1982) epitomised ordinariness, decency, caring for others and the enjoyment he took from a life that by the usual standards was far from fortunate. He fought in Gallipoli and later in workers’ unions to make life better for others. Despite the literary prizes his memoir won, he remained true to himself. Join us in our discussion, for humility has many layers to be uncovered.

GOOD FOR FUN AND BUSINESS
For more than fifty years, organisers of the iconic annual Samford Show have been providing fun for local residents and opportunities for local businesses to display their wares and services.

In 2021 an estimated 15,000 patrons attended the Show and bigger crowds are expected to attend this year. If just $20 of what they spent at the Show or in the Village (a conservative estimate) found its way into the tills of local businesses, that’s $300,000 of direct benefit for the local economy in just one weekend. The multiplier effect is obvious.
Consider also expenditure in local shops by the travelling community of operators of the rides and sideshows in the weeks leading up to the Show – fuel, food, the pub, doctors, lotto tickets, vets and many more.

Recognising this, the organising committee for this year’s Show has decided to set aside a limited number of stall sites to encourage local businesses to get involved. This is in addition to the already over-subscribed number of standard sites for stalls from all over the region.

Until the end of May, Stalls Coordinator Sharon Holloway will accept prioritised applications for stall sites on a first-comefirst-served basis from those local businesses and service providers that haven’t already applied. Just go to the Samford Show Society website to register your interest. For more details, simply scan the QR code to visit the Samford Show Society website and Stall Holder Application page. But be quick – this special provision is expected to rapidly fill.

We have been astounded at the success of “All things Nice”. When I arrived in Samford coming up to 4 years ago now, I was told that Op Shops would never succeed in Samford and that may well have been the case in the past. Towards the end of last year, a couple of racks of pre-loved clothing appeared on the parish stall at the Samford Valley Markets. Their popularity and the donations of more clothes led to the idea that there was now a market for pre-loved clothing in Samford.
We could not have imagined the rate at which this little venture has grown. It has become more than just an outlet for preloved clothing - the courtyard between the church and the hall has become a bit of a gathering place, regularly featuring relaxing over a cuppa and cake, just enjoying the morning and the company, not to mention the opportunity to pick up quality preloved clothing, of which there seems to be an endless supply being donated.
Proceeds from the sales is shared between St Paul’s Church and the Anglican Church’s ministry to the victims of domestic violence. Well done Angela, Rosie and team for your vision and magnificent work.
“All Things Nice” is open in the hall behind St Paul’s on a Monday Morning form 9am - midday and at the Samford Valley Markets. However, it will be CLOSED on the Labour Day Holiday – 1st May.
• Regular Sunday Services: 7.30am and 9am.
• Motorcycle ride group gathers at Samford AMPOL on the first Saturday of the month for an 8:30am or 9am departure. Destinations vary and riders of all experience levels are welcome.
• SPYs – St Paul’s Youth: 3rd Friday of the month, 6pm-9pm for an evening which always includes food and a craft activity.
• Samford Valley Markets: 2nd Saturday of the month, 7am – Midday.

• All Things Nice: Mondays, 9am –midday, Parish hall

Bringing JOY to the community
For the past four years, a group of locals whose ages range from 55 to 90 have been meeting every week for exercise, fun and a lot of laughter. It’s called JOY – Just Older Youth – exercise classes for the 55+. Local business, Enhance PT, offer these low to moderate intensity exercise classes that have been designed specifically for people who are 55 and above. The classes focus on increasing balance, strength and flexibility as well as the improvement of general fitness levels.
“It’s not inevitable that people of a certain age won’t be capable of doing things. There’s a lot of research out there that suggests feeling good about ageing and about ourselves can actually help us to live more positively and longer,” says Miranda, owner and operator of Enhance PT. “Ageing can bring challenges and not all of life is within our control – but there’s a lot we can do.”
Miranda is extremely passionate about keeping our more mature population moving freely, living stronger and living independently for as long as possible.
“JOY classes have had a big positive social effect in that they are a community within a community. Members look out for one another and if someone is missing from class, we will text or phone them to check if they are okay.”
Some clients have reconnected with friends they had lost contact with, while others have formed new friendships and bonds. The social interaction that comes with attending these types of classes can have such a positive impact on both our physical and mental health.
“We have been working with this age group for several years now, which is super important. Injuries after 55 can be lifechanging and exercise prescription must be tailored to suit more mature bodies and be delivered by an experienced instructor.”

Exercise can assist in many age-related changes to muscles, hone and joints and it’s never too late to start. So, if you’re looking for safe, social and fun exercise classes with JOY, they run every Monday and Friday at the Samford Scout shelter shed, adjacent to the Scout Den in Cash Avenue North.
All fitness levels and ages are welcome. www.enhancept.com.au or call Miranda on 0434 401 750.
