Local athlete Elena Stephenson has reached a new sporting peak at the age of 21, recently representing Australia at the World Mountain Running Championships in Chang Mai, Thailand.
Competing in two events, Elena was the second Australian to finish the 8.5km up event, and the first Australian to finish the 10.7km signature up/down event, where she also placed 29th in the world.
“During the 8.5km event I experienced the full effects of the humidity and the heights in the hills with an elevation gain of 1065m, basically stumbling over the finish line,” Elena said.
“However this was an asset as I had one day to recover and fuel my body more correctly in preparation for the main event, and I am very fortunate that this was successful and I was able to compete to my full ability.”
While the elevation is challenging enough, other aspects of mountain running make it an extremely tough discipline.
“Going up takes grit and determination and focus and coming down takes skill and ability to be fearless. If you fall you need to get up as fast as possible,” Elena said.
“I fell in Chang Mai and as I had just overtaken four runners, I had to get up so quickly to retain my position. As a junior I competed in Argentina 2019 in the World Championships and raced with a splint
as I had just torn my ligament. I fell in a river rapid freezing from the snow melting, was pulled up by officials and I got up to complete the race. That’s mountain running.”
A former Samford Stingrays competitive swimmer, Elena turned her attention to running after falling ill with glandular fever which required time away from the pool.
“Purely as fitness I went for a run with my mum, initially not enjoying it at all, but over time I wanted to know, how did these runners run these long distances, so I challenged myself and continued,” Elena said.
Elena’s recent successes include first place at the GC 30 and two second places in the Australian Mountain running Championships in the ACT. She has her eyes set on next year’s world championships in the Austrian Alps.
While Elena has achieved incredible things on her own two feet, she remains grateful for the backing she has received along the way. Professional support has been received from Steve Manning from Intraining and Aaron Knight from ITRA, but she is also cheered on from those who know her best.
“I am fortunate to have a very supportive family that accompany me to events throughout Australia and even to Thailand and Argentina. My parents have always been heavily involved in sport and fitness and one of my sisters is part of the future Matildas program, so I see competition as normal and positive.”

AIR TRAFFIC UPDATE
At the inaugural meeting of the SDPPA Aircraft Noise sub-committee last month, motivated residents voted to create an official aviation group for Samford and surrounding areas - the Samford Area Aircraft Action Group (SAAAG), who will volunteer their time to assist the BFPCA with this fight against aircraft noise and pollution.
While the latest reports are being absorbed, the group are monitoring daily air traffic locally. As an example, based on official stats from the Webtrak 6 App, 142 aircraft flew over Samford on Monday 14 November – and this is only going to intensify.
If you’re one of the properties affected by noise or you’re a concerned resident, the group will meet next on 7 December at 7pm at the SCHUB. Contact Tess Bignell: tess@bfpca.org.au for further information.

When to BBQ at John
Scott Park
A new online dashboard is available showing how people use John Scott Park, which can come in handy in planning a kids party or visiting the park with some raw sausages with the intent of snagging a BBQ.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council provides this information collected by sensors dotted around the park. These sensors use artificial intelligence to recognise shapes such as people, dogs and cars so Council can understand who is in the park and when. Sensors are also used to manage water utilisation in the toilets and some bin sensors help with scheduling rubbish pick-ups. None of these sensors use any kind of facial recognition technology.
John Scott Park is usually busiest on a Sunday, correlating with when bins are often at their capacity.
At the time of printing, the busiest time at the park on any given day is typically 11am, followed by 10am and 4pm.
The highest humidity only affects early birds who visit the park at 5am, while the hottest part of the day is around 1pm.
BBQs are most frequently used on weekends, with Monday and Thursday the most popular weekdays to grill a vege kebab. For some reason, BBQs at the north end of the park are by far more popular on Saturdays, but equal usage between north and south BBQs occurs on a Sunday.
Air quality falls within the good range, however for anyone with asthma concerns, air quality at the east of the park fares better than air at the park’s west-side.
Information can be filtered by seasons, public holidays and school holidays to see how our usage changes throughout the year. The dashboard can be accessed at: tinyurl.com/MBRCJSP

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT
MAIN STREET & JUNCTION STREET DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION
I have been contacted by a number of residents regarding the development application at 2-4 Main Street and 1-3 Junction Street, Samford Village. Questions have been asked regarding the process, timeframe and how transparent the decision is. To assist with some of those questions I wanted to update the community with the following information.
About The Application
This application is “Impact Assessable” and will therefore require public notification during the assessment process. Rest assured, the community will definitely get a chance to have your say and share any concerns you may have with Council. I know this Development Application has already raised some robust commentary from the community, so I wanted to give you as much information as I am legally allowed, for you to have your own opinion, and if you feel compelled, lodge a submission when the submission period opens (more details on this process below).
The technical information is: Application number - DA/2022/4057
Applicant: SVMJ 1234 Pty Ltd ATF SVMJ 1234 Unit Trust Application type - Material Change of Use - Development Permit for Shop, Office, Food and Drink Outlet and Health Care Services.
The application in its entirety can be viewed at your Council’s DA Tracker including all reports (eg Traffic, Storm Water, Environmental etc), plans and associated documents here: https://www.moretonbay. qld.gov.au/Services/Building-Development/ DA-Tracker/9832381
Because I strongly believe in transparency and so you the residents have a full understanding of the process, here is information regarding the DA Process. In basic terms the process for an Impact Assessible Development Application is as follows:
1. The application is lodged with Council (important to note that Council cannot refuse to accept an application and must assess each application on its merits and through the process as set out by the State Planning Act).
2. Council’s planning staff assess the application on the provided information and generally issue them with an ‘information
request’ to seek additional information required to assess the application in full.
3. The applicant generally responds to that within the set period of time required under the Act.
4. The applicant will be required to ‘publicly advertise’ the application. This has to be done formally in the way of an advert in a prominent national newspaper, writing to the adjoining neighbours and erecting the large white signs at the site which provide residents with the details of the proposal and information as to how the community can make a submission.
5. The application, response to information request and submissions are then taken into account by Council’s planning staff and a recommendation to approve or refuse the application will be forthcoming.
condition the developer to add or change elements of the development due to concerns raised by the public.
A properly made submission is one that:
• Is in writing and received by email, mail or in person;
• Is signed by each person who made it (unless made electronically);
• Is received during the notification period, i.e. during the days stipulated in the public notice;
• States clearly the name and address of each person making the submission; and
• States the grounds (reasons) for the submission.
When to Lodge a Submission
The process above is the basic framework, however importantly it sets out the timeframe of when the community will get to have their say. It’s important to make a submission when the public notification period is underway, as this ensures you will be guaranteed a response from Council and also provides you with legal appeal rights should you disagree with the final outcome.
As your Councillor, I encourage that if you feel strongly either for or against, to lodge a submission. This is the only way you have an opportunity to voice your opinion or concerns.
The submission process is as follows, but remember there is a certain submission period and this period will start only when the white notice of development signs are placed on the subject site. So please, refrain from your submissions until that period. You can also keep an eye on the DA Tracker link above where all correspondence relating to the Development Application is placed in an open and transparent manner.
You can also lodge a submission just to ensure a particular issue is noted by Council. For instance, you may be in favour of the development, but you have concerns with some elements ie. traffic management, interface with existing surrounding homes, design and built form etc. This is where submissions can assist Council officers to
A submission can be lodged any time after the notification period commences and before midnight on the last day of the notification period, i.e. between the first day and the last day stipulated in the public notice. If Council receives your submission outside of this time, your submission will be deemed ‘not properly made’, which means your submission will still be viewed by the Council officers and taken into consideration, however you will not receive a response, nor will you have any appeal rights.
When the notification period is open you can lodge your written submission by:
• Email: mbrc@moretonbay.qld.gov.au
• Post: The Chief Executive Officer, PO Box 159 Caboolture Qld 4510
• In person: at one of our Customer Service Centres.
I hope you understand the above and in turn understand I have provided as much information as I can to help you fully understand the process and this particular Development Application. As always, I am happy to answer any general questions you may have about the above process. You can email me at darren.grimwade@moretonbay. qld.gov.au.

Samford Scouts enjoy a varied range of outdoor adventure activities and most recently the Cub Scouts enjoyed an afternoon of canoe and kayak paddling on the North Pine Dam. During the paddle, they learnt how this dam is also known as Lake Samsonvale and was constructed in 1976 to store drinking water for the people of North Brisbane and Moreton Bay. Currently, the dam is at 66% of its 214,302ML capacity which is drawn from a 348km2 catchment area.
Canoeing is actually one of the oldest types of travel – people have been using canoes for up to 10,000 years and although traditional canoes were made from bark or hollowed out tree trunks, the canoes we use these days are fibreglass and unsinkable.

Last Wednesday my class and I, and a very important man called Peter, came to us so we could go to the creek and learn about it. Why we went to the creek was so that we could learn about the native plants and how the creek works. My partner and I had to study a plant called the Flame Tree. The Flame Tree is a tree which only flowers when the leaves fall off. The flowers are shaped like little, red, bells. – Joni.
Students Learn about the Local Region
The students in Class 4 at Samford Valley Steiner School have been learning about their local region. Peter Storer of the Samford Eco-Corridor project (and Samford branch president of Native Plants Queensland) led the students in a learning experience based upon Samford Creek which runs behind the length of the school campus. Peter provided extensive knowledge of the plants and some of the animal and bird species and their interrelationships within this creek habitat.
The students worked in groups to observe and draw the species of trees that Peter introduced. This helped extend their learning for the Local Region Main Lesson. The students used the information they had learnt to construct a map of the creek in relief featuring reference to flora and fauna. Some of the students have provided their own reflections on the experience with Peter.
Peter wanted to take our class to the creek because he wanted to show us the type of plants, trees and animals that lived there. We learnt about a Hoop Pine tree, that I now know is a tree that birds like to nest in. The Indigenous name for the tree is Kumbartcho. It made me feel like now I know more about the creek and I can teach people too. – Phoenix.
Peter Storer was pleased to have the opportunity to introduce the students to our local habitat.
“I thoroughly enjoyed working with this Grade 4 class and the teaching staff. The students were enthusiastic and engaged. They answered almost all the questions I
THE VILLAGE PUMP 25 NOVEMBER 2022– Page 5
had prepared and showed a keen interest in their local environment,” he said.

Community helping community is the Samford Support Network’s philosophy and it is always a privilege to receive donations from our numerous benefactors in our beautiful valley.
We recently had the honour of accepting donations totalling $710 from the children of Samford State School which truly touched our hearts. Groups of classmates in Grade 6 spent several weeks designing, creating and crafting items to sell to other children on their Market Day stalls. The proceeds were donated to their chosen charities and Samford Support Network was the very grateful recipient of donations from nine different groups.
We received some beautiful letters, including the following:
We chose you, Samford Support Network, because we admire the way you help people who are in need. We love the way you help anyone, even though you don’t know them. We have raised a total of $132.35, all for you, so you can carry on helping. Kind regards, Evie, Luca and Laura.
The exact reason our group chose the Samford Support Network out of all the other amazing charities in Samford is because you contribute all of your time to help people in need. We are inspired by the work you do and strive to help more people in our day to day lives as well. We are proudly donating all of our profit ($69.95) to Samford Support Network. Yours sincerely, Phoebe, Gen, Emma and Lily.
We chose your charity to donate our profits to because we think you do an outstanding job of supporting our community. Kind regards, Daniel and Josh.
What a wonderful culture Samford State School is nurturing whereby the children strive to help and give back to their community, expending an enormous amount of effort to do so. The parents and school staff can be justifiably proud.
Continuing the concept of community helping community and the joy of giving,
we are using the children’s donations to purchase small Christmas gifts for our many Samford Valley clients and will delight in letting them know the source.

PILATES LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING
Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing opened its doors in 2010. At the time we were one of two businesses offering Mat Pilates. How things have changed over 12 years. Currently in our little village, Pilates classes are on offer from 5 businesses and through MBRC in the parks! I suggest this is a big statement. Pilates works and it can work for everyone.
Since 2010, Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing has grown into a full service Pilates studio offering all Pilates equipment with fully trained and qualified Pilates Specialist Trainers bringing expert knowledge and understanding to each class. Our classes still host no more than three clients on Reformers and other equipment. Mat classes host no more than eight. What a wonderful journey it has been to work with and continue to work with people committed to maintaining good health, physical strength and endurance.
In 2023 we will have 3 trained and qualified instructors available to deliver classes. Using Mats, Reformers, Stability Chairs, the Cadillac Tower along with other small equipment, clients will be guided through specific programming for each group or private class.
In addition to these classes, I am looking for expressions of interest in Beginners Dance classes. These classes will be based on a Contemporary dance technique done to music to encourage strong free movement inside a disciplined technique.
If you are interested in either our full service Pilates studio or the Beginners Contemporary dance classes, please contact Dorothy on 0432 269 472 or on www. pilates-lifestyle.com.au.

“The
Dirt
Patch” A place to Connect, Exchange and Grow
“The community garden looks like a dirt patch. When are they ever going to plant something?”
Oh I hear you. It sure does look like we haven’t done anything. But let me assure you, behind the scenes so much has been happening.
In the last article I wrote about the steps we followed in our “design phase”. What I didn’t tell you, is that parallel to this process, was a “how are we going to fund these amazing ideas?” phase which naturally led us into a “grant writing phase” which we are right in the thick of now. In the last few weeks alone, we’ve submitted three different grant applications, and we have another two in the wings for early next year.
If all goes to plan, we will slide gracefully into the “action phase” from late January, and the Dirt Patch will begin its transformation into a place of beauty for our community. The first projects include garden edging for a food forest, a children’s sandpit and digging patch, 3 raised garden beds, plus a wheelchair accessible bed. I can hardly wait.
Are you keen to help create our Dirt Patch Garden in 2023?
Please join us at the Dirt Patch (64 Cash Ave North) for our monthly Garden Meet-Up and Working Bee - first Sunday of each month from 9.30am-11.30am (please note there is no meet up in January due to holidays).
Pencil in these dates! Sunday December 4th. Sunday Feb 5th. Sunday March 5th.
Special Request: We have been offered a huge pile of small/medium logs that are nearby, but we need somebody with a backhoe to speed up the job. Do you
know anybody who can spare a few hours to help? You can contact us at: samfordcommunitygarden@gmail.com

REDUCING GREEN WASTE
With the MBRC recently introducing a limit on the number of tip visits for residents with kerbside collection, it is possible to reduce your green waste visits with a few simple tips.
the surface of the soil. The nutrients in the mulch are absorbed by the soil to feed the plants. The best mulch uses a mixture of garden materials. If you only have one type (such as grass clippings) it will still work. If you are only using grass clippings, use a thin layer at a time. Keep it fluffed up to allow rainwater to penetrate.
There are many benefits to using green or organic wastes at home:
• recycling your green waste by composting reduces waste to landfill and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
• composting produces useful materials that can be put back into your garden to improve soil health.
• using green waste as a mulch around your garden can protect soils from erosion, reduce weeds and plant stress, and can help to prevent water evaporation from the soil.
You can start by using your green waste on your garden beds as mulch. This is a quick and easy way to reuse your garden clippings. Mulch can help your garden retain moisture, reduce watering and build soil structure.
Place garden waste in a 10-centimetredeep layer on top of the soil in and around your plants. Take care not to allow the mulch to touch plant stems. As the mulch layer breaks down into the soil, add more mulch to the top layer.
Green waste refers to garden waste such as leaves, grass clippings and prunings. Some weeds can also be used for mulch, but make sure they don’t have seeds.
When you place mulch around plants in your garden, the mulch will break down on
The benefits of mulch are that it can suppress weeds, act as a natural slow-release fertiliser, provide a home for plant-friendly insects and micro-organisms, retaining up to 70% more moisture than mulched soil.
The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit

SCHUB FRIDAY’S WISH NUMBER
ONE GRANTED
A huge thank you to the many wonderful locals who offered Wishmas trees for the forthcoming Christmas On Main Street event on December 3. We could have had a Wish-mas Avenue lined with trees instead of Main Street and its exciting new landscaping. We have two lovely trees from Jennifer McGuinness and Pam Alton: one will be our official Wishmas Tree in Storyland in the RSL grounds, and one will be used at the SCHUB for Christmas gatherings. The generosity of our community never ceases to amaze me.
Thank you also to Wendy Sonnenberg, Lucie Verhelt and Judy Wormsley and the other workers in Creating Kindness who have worked so hard to prepare the wish activity for Christmas on Main Street festival.
On Friday 9th December, all those who have come to Friday Afternoon at the SCHUB, whether through Cuppa and a Chat, Samford Scribblers, DETAIL, Crafting Kindness or the Good Stuff Ideas Forum, are invited to our end of year function where our amazing Jenni Guse will guide us through a shared cooking activity at the SCHUB, to prepare a lovely meal to enjoy together. Talented entrepreneur, Jodie Miller of Fresh Local Provisions is providing many of the scrumptious ingredients. Costing for
the meal will be equally divided among those who come. More details will be in the Pump’s next edition and on Facebook shortly.
This is such a wonderful time of year to connect with old and new friends, to savour the good will that abounds in our community.

EDIBLE WASTE
at Samford Edible Exchange
Local artist Diane Kime has always grown fruit, vegetables and herbs. There is never any waste as she turns vegetable peelings etc into vegetable stock, and excess fruit into sauces, jams and jellies. Vegetables are parboiled and frozen or pickled. Herbs are dried and ground to be used all year in cooking and baking.
With an excess of cherry tomatoes, Diane made her own recipe for tomato sauce. This can be used as is, or swirled through pasta, mixed with mayonnaise for savoury foods, or added to a beef casserole for extra richness and flavour.
This is the recipe Diane shared with the Samford Edible Exchange and now with our readers.
TOMATO SAUCE
Ingredients:
½ kilo of cherry tomatoes
¾ cup of sugar
¾ cup apple cider vinegar pinch of salt
A few drops of garlic infused oil
About 2 tablespoons of molasses 1 teaspoon of dried galangal ginger
¼ teaspoon each of black pepper, turmeric, dried celery, mixed dried herbs, ground cloves, allspice and cinnamon.
Method:
Put tomatoes in a colander over a bowl. Using hands squish them to release the seeds. Place the pulp in a large saucepan. Now take the juice and seeds and pass
through a sieve, discarding as much seeds as you can. Put the strained liquid in with the pulp.
Add all other ingredients and simmer gently on stove until colour changes to a deep red. Let it reduce down a bit. When cooked and cooled use a stick blender to puree.
Bottle and keep in refrigerator. This mixture will give you about 2 cups of sauce.
NOTE
You can add some finely diced onion, garlic, chilli, leek etc. As I have to follow a Fodmap diet I don’t use these in my cooking at all. You can add a finely chopped anchovy. You can replace the tomatoes with Brazilian cherries.
I grow and dry produce so the turmeric, celery, galangal ginger and mixed herbs are from my garden. The dried mixed herbs I currently use are, rosemary, marjoram, oregano and parsley.

Building Sustainably a Samford Thing
Sustainable business practice is not a Samford-only thing but we have a few in the Valley who demonstrate it in both design and construction. The most recent gathering of Samford Sustainable Business Network members and interested members of the community took place at Murray Bailye’s Arthouse Constructions workshop space at Yugar. The group witnessed an impressive and inspiring space that is the engine room for constructing and reconstructing sustainable built structures.
Another of the Network’s members is Bligh Graham Architects and locals Sonia and Chris were applauded by the Network
members for their outstanding achievement as winners of the David Oppenheim Award for Sustainable Architecture, bestowed recently by the Australian Institute of Architects. A great acknowledgement indeed.
The efforts of Arthouse Constructions and Bligh Graham Architects in contributing to a sustainable planet will no doubt inspire valuable insights, conversations and actions by others. They are just two of the dozens of Samford businesses that make up the growing Samford Sustainable Business Network. If you would like to join, please email info@greenstreet.net.au or call or text to 0407 190 162.

100 YEARS IN THE VILLAGE
Samford Valley Community Church will celebrate 100 years in the village on Sunday 4 December 2022. Having a presence in Samford Village was the motivating factor to dismantle the Methodist Church on ‘Broads Hill’ in 1922 and carry it by horse and dray to the corner of Station and Church Streets (where The Flying Nun Café is now).
The Brisbane Courier 7 Dec 1922 records: “Generous giving and willing work enabled the local committee to reopen the building, painted and otherwise improved, almost free of debt. The Rev. Dr.Youngman and the circuit minister (Rev. J.R. Williams) conducted the opening services. First came the gathering for tea in the Farmers’ Hall, followed by adjournment to the church, where, after singing and prayer, Dr. Youngman unlocked the door and declared the building open for the worship of God.”
The vision of those founding families has meant SVCC has been serving the village, valley and beyond for one hundred years. On Sunday 4 December at 9am, the community will celebrate God’s faithfulness with a thanksgiving service at 44 Mt Glorious Rd, followed by a shared lunch in the shed. You are welcome to join us. Please RSVP to svcc100@svcc.org.au or respond to the event page on Facebook.
See our advertisement on Page 8 for further details.

Understanding Sugar.
Sugar is a quick and easy fuel for your body and brain. But as the saying goes: too much of a good thing can be harmful. It’s scientifically proven that a diet high in sugar leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.
How Does Sugar A ect Your Teeth?
Increased sugar intake in combination with inadequate oral health causes dental diseases. Your mouth is full of naturally occurring bacteria which help to keep you healthy. However, there are some bacteria in your mouth that feed on the sugars you consume. Consuming too much sugar creates a decay conducive environment which gives acid-generating bacteria like S.mutans the ability to thrive. S.mutans is the main bacteria that causes decay (holes in your teeth) and irritates your gums.
Protect Your Teeth By Cutting Out:
Fruit juices, soft drinks and energy drinks. Dried fruits, sweetened fruit yoghurt and agave & molasses honey. Fast food burgers. Sauces like tomato and barbeque. Salad Dressings –anything high in fructose.
Sugar consumption
visit our website and tooth decay
What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Teeth and Oral Health?
Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste
Use dental floss once a day to clean between your teeth
Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional clean Quit smoking, it damages your tooth enamel and gums and dries your mouth out which contributes to the acidic environment
The Bottom Line
Healthy gut = healthy mouth. Say YES to a diet rich in.. Plants and vegetables. Lean meats (limit red & processed meats) Unsaturated fats
Vegetable oils
Nuts
Full fat fairy products Consume water after every meal to help wash away lingering food
Say NO to diets that are high in fructose and refined sugars and low in fibre.

REHABILITATING HORSES
Horse injuries can happen in an instant, with the recovery journey often taking a long time by comparison. For anyone looking to help their horse happily trot around again, various therapies are available including Craniosacral therapy (CST) and Equine Positional Release (EPR).
CST and EPR are unique in the world of therapy for horses, as they both focus on forming a relationship with the horse and addressing the animal’s whole body. Combining these therapies can be effective in assisting both acute and chronic injuries.
Local equine practitioner Michelle from Equis Australia regularly travels to Samford and surrounds to rehabilitate horses and promote their wellness, practicing both forms of therapy as required.
CST applies specific hands-on techniques to the horse’s body, releasing restrictions in the musculoskeletal system and in the fascia. This is a tissue that weaves the whole body together like a spider web. This form of therapy uses light contact, with no physical manipulation of the bones and tissues.
EPR is a gentle manual therapy based on the principles of non-force and movement
away from pain to achieve mobilisation, joint stabilisation, soft tissue repair and postural re-education.
In both forms of therapy, practitioners are trained to first assess the animal’s movement, posture, and soft tissue. Hands-on techniques release restrictions throughout the horse’s musculoskeletal system, restoring balance and fluidity of movement and range of motion.
Michelle has successfully worked with common equine conditions such as headshaking, TMJ imbalances, head traumas, lameness, injuries, sore backs, neck stiffness, leg and pelvic injuries. She is also a qualified practicing vet nurse and has participated in equine laminitis research.
Anyone with a horse that is cranky, sore or recovering from injury can contact Michelle on 0439 888 520.

‘Model’ horses feature
The ‘model’ horses at Samford RDA are featuring in their very own calendar.
Vice-President of Samford RDA and equine photographer, Sarah Hellen, has produced the 2023 calendar. It sells for $25 as a Christmas fundraiser for the organisation, and is available from the RDA Centre at Samford Showgrounds or posted via fundraising@samfordrda.com.au.

These three horses recently stepped up from normal duties to compete via video recording in the RDAQ State Dressage Championships. Their riders were Hannah and Lachlan Coote, Ricky-Leigh Koch and Caleb Gordon. All horses and riders performed extremely well, and Samford
CHRONIC HEADACHE RELIEF
Cervicogenic headaches are a common cause of chronic headaches that are often misdiagnosed. A cervicogenic headache is a type of secondary headache that results from a specific source of neck pain. The presenting features can be complex to
diagnose and present similar to many primary headache syndromes such as migraines and tension type headaches that are encountered daily. The main symptoms of a cervicogenic headache include:
• Pain begins in the neck first then a headache starts.
• The headache is aggravated by neck related activities movement or positions.
• A one sided dominant headache.
• Can be associated with restricted neck motion.
• The headache does not shift sides.
There is evidence of long-term benefits of physiotherapy interventions such as manual therapy and exercise directed to cervical musculoskeletal dysfunction for cervicogenic headaches.
If this sounds like something you may have or are concerned about, our physiotherapists at The Movement Team would love to help! Please call 3289 1644 to make a booking, or alternatively you can visit our website online.

How can community groups help threatened species?
Our next meeting, to be held on Tuesday 6 December in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30 pm start, will feature Dr Hodgon, Manager Threatened Species Coordination at the Department of Environment and Science, who will explain how community groups can help with threatened species recovery in Queensland.
John will provide an overview of the Threatened Species Program 2020-40, its structure and functions and current work, including with First Nations groups and community groups. Come along and find out how you can contribute to protecting threatened species.
We encourage attendees to bring along native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and
draw the plant raffle while socialising.
Our November meeting had another huge audience to hear Albert Garcia of the Bimer Bonsai Club give a fabulous talk on using native plants for bonsai. His specimens ranged from a 30-year old Small-leaved Fig (Ficus obliqua), which was a traditionalstyle bonsai, to the challenging Saw-leaved Banksia (B. serrata), which can’t be pushed into a traditional bonsai shape.
Other examples of unconventional bonsai included a ‘100-tree forest’ of she-oaks and an Austromyrtus Copper Tops. Albert explained that the special potting mixes used for bonsai need to be free-draining, while holding nutrients. They contain a mix of composted pine bark, kitty litter, gravel, zeolite, pumice, charcoal and diatomite.

VOLUNTEER LOCALLYREAP THE REWARDS
Our local community groups love making a difference, and with organisation interests ranging from environmental conservation to community outreach, there is a group out there for anyone wanting to spend a few hours of their time giving to something greater than themselves.
Volunteering is a well-documented way to foster a sense of achievement in life, connect with likeminded people and allows people to share their talents and learn new skills which can feature on a resume.
her laundry!” Dee and Melissa said.
With four distribution runs five days a week, Meals on Wheels Samford supports between 50-60 clients on a weekly basis from Mount Nebo to Mount Mee and in between.
Natalie Rees, President of the Samford Lions Club sees similar camaraderie amongst her volunteers who find a “sense of pride in helping others, a sense of community and belonging, fellowship and friendship and a broadening of social circles.”
“The people I volunteer with aren’t people I would normally cross paths with in day to day life,” she said.
Recent Samford Lions projects include tree planting jointly with Rotary Club of Samford Valley, and local drought and flood relief fundraising, passing aid directly to affected communities. The Samford Lions Club also supports other groups including The Charity Craft Creators which helps women and children escaping domestic violence, as well as The Samford Health & Wellbeing Support Group.

The group is always keen to hear from anyone interested in bushcare.
“Volunteers always enjoy seeing the results of their labour and seeing just how much work a motivated group can achieve in a short time,” Peter said.
For those who enjoy travel, the Samford Visitor Information Centre welcomes volunteers and are seeking new team members.
“Our volunteers love to promote the Moreton Bay Region and the visitors we see in the visitor information centre are always happy to hear the local stories and find the hidden gems,” Nicky Young, Manager Visitor Services and Industry Engagement at Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism said.
said their volunteers enjoy giving their time as giving back and supporting their community provides a sense of purpose, and they enjoy feeling like a part of the community.
Volunteers say that benefits include, “seeing the joy and appreciation from our clients,” “meeting like-minded community members and making friendships,” and “knowing you are part of an organisation helping people stay in their own homes.”
“Our volunteers don’t just deliver meals, they provide a friendly face too. Just today, one of our volunteers helped a client with
“The feedback we have had is always positive. The general public trust Lions. They know that we will be there sizzling sausages or helping in the community whenever we can,” Natalie said.
Peter Storer, Member of the SDPPA Eco-Corridor Sub-Committee found most Eco-Corridor volunteers want to support what they see as a worthwhile and successful community undertaking. This long-term project involves clearing areas of invasive weeds, replanting with species originally found in the district, creating a natural corridor for wildlife and protecting the river from erosion.
“Some come to learn about our local
“The feedback we receive from our visitors is always how helpful the volunteers are, what great information they provide, and how friendly they are. The volunteers are very passionate, great story tellers, and know how to find the answers to the visitors questions to ensure they have the best time while here.”
These and many other local groups are keen to hear from anyone wanting to give their time for a greater purpose and gain a feeling of life satisfaction in return. Other local organisations include the Rotary Club of Samford Valley, the Samford Museum, Samford Support Network, Samford Landcare and the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association. COMMUNITY SPIRIT
Those who have read these articles in The Village Pump will be familiar with the goings on at Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) and the kind of activities that the men have been up to during the year. We all know about the clever creations conjured up by the wood working group – the “Woodies” and the metal making masterpieces manufactured by the metal working group – aka: the “Steelies”.
Less familiar are some of the other activities that the men of SAMS get up to, such as painting and drawing done by the art group and the photographic pursuits of the “Shutterbugs”.
Not to be outdone, there is a dedicated
bunch of blokes who gain great satisfaction by restoring furniture, and another who have just completed work on a vintage trailer. Fitness and health are not forgotten either as yet another group of men walk the streets of Samford early on a Tuesday morning – and invite anyone and everyone to join them. Did I not mention fellowship at the Tuesday morning get-together, or education, information and entertainment at the monthly guest speaker night?
It is not all fun and games though. There is some “housework” to be done too – such as gardening and cleaning up around the Shed. When Steve “Gibbo” Gibbens sounds the bugle, there’s always a multitude of men with spades, rakes, garden shears and brush cutters at the ready, willing to come to the Shed to give a hand.
Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along and find out for yourselves what SAMS is all about? Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. Find out more at samfordshed.org.au or email samssecretary1@gmail.com

Brendale Evening VIEW Club
Festive Season came early for members who celebrated Christmas at the November meeting. The theme for the night was of course Christmas and the ladies came with smiles on their faces, wearing lots of red and green with a splash of bling and a favourite funny Christmas hat.
Hostess Denise greeted everyone before they headed to the raffles and then to enjoy a meal together, while the spirit of the Christmas season was kept alive by our guest entertainers Jim and Cliff who encouraged the ladies to sing and clap along to many well known Christmas Carols and sixties music – and even a dance or two!
Events coordinators Gerry and Judy drew the raffles and lucky door prizes. There were so many hampers to be won, which included the generously donated items from members - I don’t think anyone left empty handed.
With all this fun, the ladies never lost sight of why they had come together throughout this year and many years before - to raise funds for The Smith Family Learning for Life Program.
The Brendale VIEW Club members are proud of their efforts over the years supporting eight children through the program which helps to educate and provide necessities for Australian children so that they may reach their potential.
This year has been a very successful fundraising year and the fun is still not over as we again come together on 8th December for the Bunnings Brendale Christmas Market commencing at 6pm. Santa will be there along with lots of market stalls. Bring the kids and grandkids along and have a chat. We would love to tell you about VIEW.
You are welcome to a dinner meeting in the New Year to see if VIEW is for you. First one for 2023 will be 17th January, Aspley Hornets Football Club, 50 Graham Rd, Carseldine, 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Bookings essential. Call President Shayne on 0409 991 428.

LOOK OUT FOR THESE SIGNS AT CHRISTMAS ON MAIN STREET
THE JOY OF A REAL CHRISTMAS TREE
Christmas is just around the corner: and you can make your Christmas tree-mendous with a Real Christmas Tree!
The Christmas Tree Express has already sold out of 6ft trees, but they still have 7ft, 8ft and 9ft trees available. You can pre-order your real Christmas Tree now through the new website: thechristmastreeexpress.com before they are all gone!
Our local churches have come together to assist with volunteeers for the event.
These ‘ASK ME’ signs will be bobbing around the street to help you locate the activites you’re looking for, including times for musicians and even when Santa might arrive! A big THANK YOU to the congregations of Samford Anglican Church, Samford Valley Community Church and Nexus Samford.
The Christmas Tree Express is back in 2022! Harry Chapman, a Samford local who is currently studying Finance and Economics at the University of Queensland is once again using his holidays to run this seasonal business to apply his knowledge from the classroom to the community. A real Christmas tree offers old-fashioned festive cheer, and of course, brings the unmistakable scent of Christmas. You may pick-up your Radiata Pine Tree from The Christmas Tree Express base in Samsonvale from the 3rd to 6th December, or alternatively delivery is available. They will also be for sale at Christmas on Main Street on 3rd December.
