LET’S BEGIN Letter to the Editor How lucky we all are to live in this beautiful valley and all that it has that attracted us here.

Samford’s rural feel and community makes our valley a beautiful corner of the world.

Unfortunately, in more recent years, development has meant that our roads have become busier with many drivers not understanding what comes with a rural area such as horses on the road.

For those who don’t know, horses have right of way, on the road, and on trails.

This means that if a rider asks a vehicle (or bike) to stop because the horse is agitated or upset, they must stop. A rider can ask that a driver turn their engine off.

It is also the law that vehicles are required to slow down and give horses space when on the road.

I am thankful to those who know the road rules and follow them. For those who are ignorant or choose not to abide by them, perhaps this community isn’t suited to you.

SDPPA GRANTS SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS GRANT POINTS THE WAY One of the recent beneficiaries of the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association’s 2022 Community Grants Program was the Samford Scout Group, who used the grant to refurbish the floor of their main scout hall building.

The original concrete floor in the hall was laid in 1986 and since then it has served the activities of thousands of scout and community members who use the building. So, during the recent term holiday break, the floor was ground back and totally refurbished with the application of a modern epoxy flake floor coating.

Within this durable coating, there has been included over 3 million flakes with a mix of 6 colours. Then, in the centre of the floor, a special 5 metre diameter compass point, multi colour image has been added, to help teach future junior scouts about compass navigation.

The end result is stunning and is the work of local company, Marksmen Painting and Decorating. The owner of the business is Mark Smith who said, “I was pleased we could complete this special project for the Samford Scout Group as I was a Samford Scout, my children are now too, and I volunteer as an adult. For all the great

scouting experiences had by our family, it is a pleasure to participate in a project that will bring joy to so many more people within our community in the years ahead.”

SDPPA GRANT MAKES THE WRAP Meals on Wheels Samford (MOW) was very grateful to receive a grant from the Samford and Districts Progress & protection Association (SDPPA) in their March 2022 grant round, to purchase an automatic sandwich sealing machine. The machine uses environmentally friendly, biodegradable packaging and is a very efficient machine.

“It’s amazing the difference one item of machinery can make. Our meals are regularly departing earlier from the SCHUB now, instead of later,” said Dee Medway, who coordinates the service alongside Tanja Ungerer.

The kitchen services 390 clients on average per day and usually at least 120 sandwiches, so having a machine that can manage this process efficiently has been very well received.

“The current packaging method was slow and used less environmentally friendly packaging that could open in transit, causing cross contamination and leakage,” said Dee. The sandwich sealer has streamlined the sandwich packaging process, enabling two sandwiches to be sealed hygienically at once, ensuring it gets to the customers on time and in pristine condition.

MOW Samford is a very busy service. In

June alone, just under 2000 meal items were delivered, an increase of 300 items from the previous month.

Dee and Tanja are so grateful to a committed team of volunteers who arrive each day to deliver meals across Samford and surrounding areas. But they’d always welcome more.

“We are definitely in need of kitchen volunteers for 2 days a week. This is a very light duties role of 4 hours per day, once a week, 9.30am until 1.30pm. Duties include cleaning, welcoming volunteers, and minor administration tasks preparing the delivery runs for departure.”

Community Champion | Paul Hannah With personal passions in writing, woodwork and astronomy, local retiree Paul Hannah has been sharing his skills and interests to inspire the next generation of star gazers and bevel cutters.

Paul moved to Samford for the darker skies where he set up his very own observatory comprising a three metre cube topped with a rotating aluminium dome.

The main scope is a 910mm refractor mounted on a Skywatcher EQ-6.

“With it I can see the spaces between the rings of Saturn along with 4 of its biggest moons,” he said.

Paul began opening up his observatory to local kids, allowing them to share in the wonder of other worlds.

“I was showing a group of kids a few things and we began by looking at the moon. There is a particular knack to looking through an eyepiece. Miss 10-year-old was struggling to see anything at all and her mother said, ‘Why do you do this?’ and at that moment, Miss 10-year-old saw the moon pop up in the eyepiece and said, ‘Oh wow!’ Then I said to the mother ‘That’s why’.”

“One of the many great benefits of astronomy is a sense of wonder. Until you are aware of it Canopus is just another star in the sky, but it adds another dimension to the experience when you know that the light that hits your eyes travelled for 310 years to get here,” Paul said.

“Then when you learn that Canopus is over 10,000 times brighter than the sun and 65 times bigger, that little star in the sky suddenly seems so much more.”

A teacher at heart, Paul’s other passion of sharing woodworking skills with kids came from an initial desire to help others read.

This grew from his previous experience volunteering to improve Indigenous children’s reading abilities.

“One day I put out a notice on Samford Community Noticeboard Facebook page asking if anyone needed help learning to read. I was instantly messaged by a mother who was anxious about her girl recently diagnosed with autism,” Paul said.

“We started with the basics and she progressed from being the worst reader in her class to the best. When we had gone as far as we could with reading, I asked if she would like to make something in the workshop. After that other parents with kids on the spectrum contacted me and I taught them woodwork too. One has since left school and is now working full time in a kitchen manufacturing business. Right now I have two woodworking students and one learning to read.”

Two of Paul’s students each took out 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes at this year’s Dayboro show.

Paul’s own handiwork can be seen locally, including the spice display cabinet at Samford Valley Meats, dog trainer training aids, nesting boxes for wildlife carers and house signs around the Valley.

“All of the profit from these projects goes to buying wood and maintaining equipment so I can teach the kids for no charge,” Paul said.

Not content with delving into these hobbies, Paul also writes plays, with one recently performed at Strathpine, and another slated to be turned into a short movie in the U.S.A. But for Paul, sharing his

LOCAL NEWS DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Wildlife Signage to Increase Awareness In February this year, Council carried out a trial and placed wildlife shaped coreflute signs of kangaroos and koalas along local roads, to see if they could help with the amount of wildlife/vehicle collisions. This trial was successful, with feedback received supporting an increased community awareness - which is great.

Council has received multiple requests from the community as well as animal rescue groups across the region, asking for the continuation of the animal shaped reflective signs to be placed along roads.

I am pleased to say that the second phase of this seasonal trial is going to be rolled out at hotspots that have been identified to have a higher concentration of wildlife vehicle collisions.

The placement of signage between July to September will also coincide with periods of peak wildlife movement, as well as being the months when Council sees an increase in residents requesting wildlife awareness signs to be installed. You will see the bright yellow corflute kangaroos and koalas popping up in July along Gibbons Road, Samford Valley, Mt Samson Road, Mount Samson and Browns Road, Kurwongbah.

During August, the signs will be along Vores Road, Whiteside and in September Mt Samson Road in Kobble Creek. The signs look great, they will certainly draw attention and hopefully they will also help to create a greater awareness of the movement of wildlife around our region.

COMMUNITY GROUPS CELEBRATE 150 Years of Samford State School Community groups have enrolled to take part in Samford State School’s 150 Year Celebrations on Saturday 10 September.

With weather conditions preventing this year’s Samford Show, many local organisations that would usually have had a show presence will instead participate in the school’s upcoming event.

“Samford State School is proud of its founding history with Samford Show and is excited to support many of those community groups that rely on the Show as

their major fundraiser for the year,” Joanna Harris, Samford State School Parents & Citizens Association President said.

“With the cancellation of the Show, Samford State School is going to provide another opportunity for our community to come together to support our charities and groups that continue to do so much for our local community,” she said.

“For any school turning 150 years old, it is an exciting and major milestone in their history. Particularly in Queensland, given the oldest school still operating today opened in 1850 in Warwick; only 22 years prior to Samford State School.”

In offering the Show Society’s help, President Terry Hogan said that such milestones deserved the backing of the whole community.

“Most of our members will either have attended the school themselves or their offspring have, leaving great memories of the nurturing role of our school in preparing many generations to lead fulfilling lives,” he said.

While the wet weather rendered the Showgrounds unusable for this year’s show, a number of show features will be adopted at the school’s September celebrations including the Samford Dog Show, pig races and vintage car display.

“Like many other voluntary organisations and businesses, the Samford Show Society is getting right behind the school’s 150th birthday and doing what it can to make the celebration a success,” Terry said.

The Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) will be on hand at the Tuckshop, providing freshly made sandwiches, scones and their famous slices.

“Samford QCWA are so appreciative of Samford State School for including us in their 150 Year Celebration,” Fiona Moody, QCWA Samford President said.

“QCWA turns 100 this year and this will be a joyful community occasion to share

with another centenarian.”

The Rotary Club of Samford Valley will also have a presence at the School’s Celebration by co-ordinating parking and running the bar with the P&C. “The Rotary Club has had an association with the school over 40 years since the club was formed,” Bob Millar, Rotary Club of Samford Valley, Service Projects Director said.

“The club has undertaken projects at the school such as construction of the Tranquillity Garden and Bridge in 2005 and the shed on the oval in 1992. Accordingly, the club is excited to be a part of the 150th anniversary celebrations,” he said.

“The club provided a number of members to serve on both the school and community pool building committee and the Samford Community Centre development. We also provided tens of thousands of dollars towards both projects and a rock bearing the Rotary wheel sits outside the pool gates.”

NATIONAL TREE DAY 31 JULY Why Not Grow a Bush Food Plant?

Samford Landcare has an ongoing tree planting program and is currently preparing plans to create a walking path alongside Cash Avenue and Samford Creek which will feature bush food plants. Bush food plants are edible plants that are native to Australia. They’ve been harvested, cooked and used as medicine for tens of thousands of years by local Aboriginal people and are an important part of living cultures.

The Bush Food plants planned for Samford Landcare can also be easily grown and harvested in our local back yards and gardens, so children and adults can learn about and enjoy these plants. Here are some popular examples you can plant on National Tree Day: Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) Lemon myrtle is a rainforest tree with edible lemon-scented leaves and probably the easiest bush foodplant to grow. They can grow upwards of 4 metres, but can also be pruned to size in a pot. The cooked leaves can be made into a tea or used as a herb.

(pictured) Cinnamon Myr tle (Backhousia myrtifolia) has leaves that give off a cinnamon fragrance when rubbed or crushed, much like the leaves of the curry plant and kaffir lime. The leaves may be used in place of conventional cinnamon spice to flavour curries, stews, soups, roasts, ribs and sauces. In desserts, they add a warm, earthy flavour to pies, biscuits, sweets, pastries and slices and may also be used fresh or dried, steeped in hot water to make a herbal tea.

Scrambling Lily (Geitonoplesium cymosum) This is an evergreen perennial climbing vine that grows to 4 metres. The shoots are rather tasty. Eaten fresh and raw from the vine they taste like crisp asparagus.

When spring comes you can look forward to masses of sparkling white flowers. This is a good replacement plant for weedy vines like Cat’s Claw Creeper and excellent for placing on a trellis and hiding water tanks.

Pink Lime Berry (Glycosmis trifoliata) The small orange fruits of pink lime berry are sweet, juicy, honey flavoured with resinous overtones. These are eaten fresh.

The fruits also make a delicious jam which has a characteristic taste of candied honey.

Pink lime berry is a very easy to grow plant native to North Queensland. It can grow nearly everywhere, but it does especially well when planted in sunny locations.

All of the above plants can be obtained from the Kumbartcho Nursery at Eatons Hill.

There has been increased recognition of the nutritional and gourmet value of native Australian foods and Samford Landcare recently visited local provider, Kakadu Organics in Samford Village, to investigate

National Tree Day Event Paten Park Native Nursery will be celebrating National Tree Day on 31st July. During the preceding week, school students will be invited to attend workshops exploring the significance of maintaining the natural environment before selecting plants to grow in their school environment.

Families are invited to visit the nursery on Sunday 31st between 10.00am and 1.00pm.

Whilst parents are exploring the diverse range of native plants available at the nursery, children can embrace their creativity to produce a rock painting for their garden. Information on bush foods will be provided and there will be a workshop on making homes for native bees. A sausage sizzle (with vegetarian choices) will be available.

GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY - PLANT A TREE With National Tree Day (NTD) 31 July fast approaching and plenty of moisture still in the soil, this is a great time to consider planting some native trees at your place. The Eco-Corridor showcases almost 150 of our local tree species, including rainforest trees, which are suitable for landholders near creeks or rivers, and eucalypts and wattles for those in drier areas.

MBRC Bushcare held a community planting on the river bank at the EcoCorridor on NTD in 2018 (this year they will be at Strathpine, Deception Bay and Mango Hill), but this area was extensively flattened in the 2022 floods and we’re waiting to see how it recovers. In recent months, we have extended this riverbank revegetation southwards. At the June monthly bushcare session, our volunteers planted a further 180 rainforest trees, building on the work we started in April. This new section, which juts into the remnant, is much larger than we had anticipated before it was cleared, and, on the recommendation of Council Bushcare officers, this will become our next major planting zone P4 (rather than

the area by the track to the waterhole).

This strategic change means that we will continue working our way southwards along the Eco-Trail from the Bowls Club, rather than ‘by-passing’ this section as originally planned. We can’t mulch on the river bank, so weed control in P4 will be a big focus over the next two years until we get canopy closure.

In May, our birdwatchers recorded 50 bird species during the monthly survey.

Highlights included watching a pair of Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos foraging

noisily in hillside planting P3 and seeing two raptors soaring overhead (Whistling Kite and Grey Goshawk). The most magical moment, though, was seeing a platypus at the waterhole. It looked just like a small floating log at first, then it suddenly swam and dived.

Our June bird survey resulted in 53 bird species. Fairywrens were a big highlight, with all three local species seen together in a mixed party at the top of the hill: Superb, Red-backed and Variegated. The clear morning looked promising for raptors, which didn’t disappoint, with Squaretailed Kite, White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Brown Goshawk and Wedge-tailed Eagle all soaring overhead. In breaking news, a female Regent Honeyeater has recently been seen feeding on fruiting Psychotria in rainforest zone P2, bringing the total number of birds recorded at the Eco-Corridor to 149 species.

NATIONAL TREE DAY 31 JULY for gluten-free/dairy-free friends, but can be modified for other different diets too and freezes quite well. The handiest thing though, is that you can cook, blitz and then freeze the oranges in cake-quantity portions for use throughout the year. Nice one!

TREES THAT KEEP GIVING Have you noticed how well citrus grows in Samford? Right now, trees in backyards all around us are laden with lemons, oranges, limes, tangelos, grapefruit and mandarins.

With National Tree Day just around the corner (31st July), why not plant a citrus fruit tree?

Okay, so while the timing might not be quite right just yet – the best time is Spring – you can purchase the plant and prepare the soil you’ll be planting into with compost and gypsum. Keep in mind citrus love sun, but dislike wind. If you plant them somewhere near the house, you’ll not only benefit from the lovely fragrant flowers, but also know when the fruit is ripe (hopefully before the birds notice!). Consider using a few different citrus varieties in a hedge – so the fruit can hide a bit in the greenery.

The saying goes that when you plant a fruit tree for yourself, you are also planting for the benefit of future generations. When it comes to citrus, you can plant a tree and they are so abundant that it will benefit your neighbours too!

If you are fortunate to have an abundance of delicious oranges right now, the following recipe comes highly recommended. It’s ideal

ORANGE AND ALMOND CAKE (Original recipe from www.sbs.com.au) Ingredients: 2 oranges, washed (not peeled) 250g caster sugar 6 eggs 250g almond meal 1 tsp baking powder To serve (optional): whipped cream with ground cardamom, and a little icing sugar Method: Oranges prep: Place oranges in a saucepan and cover well with water. Bring to the boil and boil for two hours. Add boiling water to the pot if/as needed, to keep the oranges covered during this time. The aim is to remove the tartness of the skin, as the whole orange is used.

After two hours, drain the water off and set oranges aside to cool to room temperature, then puree them in a food processor (or hand mixer if you have a chopping blade).

Main mix: Preheat oven to 160 deg C (150 deg C if fan-forced) then grease and line a 22cm round springform cake tin. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and caster sugar very well until creamy, then stir in the orange puree by hand, followed by the almond meal, which we’ve usually premixed with the baking powder.

OUT & ABOUT BINDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PERFORMANCE Emma Che Raethke and Sarah Whitehead were neighbours who loved to sew and juggle. An interesting combination that transformed into an interactive, outdoor performance called SeamTogether – a hands-on, making experience. It was a request for advice on how to fix a garment that pricked Emma and Sarah’s imagination, allowing them to combine their two loves to create something for locals to experience and enjoy.

Originally designed for six audience members, both children and adults, with plans to increase this to ten, the 30 minute performance introduces two delightfully quirky characters you would want to be your best friends, as they travel from place to place gathering stories, forgotten garments

and sharing skills to seam together the old into the new. Audiences are invited into their magical menagerie where delightful and yet unexpected things occur.

The Seamstresses received funding from MBRC Regional Arts Development Fund and Regional Arts Fund to work with visual artist Sue Loveday and local artist Lucie Vehlhurst to contribute to a sculptural artwork that is part of the performance, as engaging with community plays a big role in the everevolving performance project. Materials have been supplied by the Buy Nothing Facebook group to use on the set and they were fortunate to receive donations from the community to develop the set and sound design elements of the show.

SeamTogether has been included in the MBRC Park Jam program and Emma and Sarah are looking to raise funds to expand four elements of the work, in preparation for these and future performances. They are hoping this will enable participants to more fully experience the stories they gather from community throughout the project. Their fundraising campaign is through the Australian Cultural Fund.

Tours and Workshops It’s all happening at Millen Farm as we recover from the first half of the year. The field is filled with abundance and colour as our garden beds are once again full of life and produce.

Recently we enjoyed a visit by Shane King MP, Member for Kurwongbah and Brodie Kaplin, Executive Chef at Meals on Wheels.

This is Brodies first visit back after the flood damage and he was delighted to see all the produce growing which will be harvested for them over the next several weeks.

Starting on July 24th, Millen Farm will be hosting a series of 1, 2 and 3 hour intensive workshops with Arran. These will include a tour onsite to show participants how they can replicate intensive growing of food at home.

OUT & ABOUT GREAT START TO A NEW RDA TERM Samford RDA has resumed after the school holiday break and starts Term 3 by thanking Samford Valley Rotary Club, the Everhard Industries Foundation, the Comiskey Family Foundation and the Queensland Government.

Local Rotarians sponsor RDA horse Blue, with their $1,500 annual sponsorship contributing to Blue’s feed and care expenses. Samford RDA’s horse and centre sponsorship programs are supported by individuals, community groups and businesses in the area. They provide vital funding to ensure that the centre continues to provide services for people with a disability.

The Everhard Industries Foundation donated $1,500 to Samford RDA after a volunteer (and Everhard Industries’ employee) nominated the charity as a worthy recipient. The Comiskey Family Foundation also made a very generous donation of $5,000. These greatly appreciated donations

will support the day-to-day operation of the centre at Samford Showgrounds. Currently, Samford RDA has more than 50 participants who come from across Brisbane to access RDA services.

With the support of local State Member and RDA Horse Sponsor, Nikki Boyd, the State Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund has approved a $96,000 grant for Samford RDA to purchase a horse float and a 4x4 utility tow vehicle. This key purchase will relieve pressure on volunteers who currently use their own vehicles to transport horses for medical treatment or to the spelling paddock. It will also provide a vehicle based at the centre capable of picking up loads of horse feed, soil and vegetation when required. The grant will also fund a shade structure to protect the vehicles.

As well as this major financial support, Samford RDA is fortunate to have a great team of dedicated volunteers – and there is always room for more helpers! Anyone interested in volunteering can attend the next Volunteer Induction session from 9am to 11am on Sunday July 24.

Sam joined the club earlier in the year and has now been a regular feature in our MKN Open Men’s team. When we asked Sam why he wanted to play for the Samford Stags, his response was, “Rachael and I have lived in Samford for 8 years and really enjoying the community. We wanted to be able to give something back. With home games, hopefully not only will the club benefit, but I hope all the local businesses will benefit too with the extra supports and fans that turn out to watch home games.”

Samford Area Mens Shed Right now, the world seems full of conflict and turmoil. There are authoritarian leaders popping up all over the place and some who are being torn down by people who feel that they have just had enough. There are wars and threats of war, and political and civil unrest in places that we would never have believed that such things could happen in those places. Even in our own country, as relatively peaceful as it is, there are things happening that can leave us stressed and worried. Yet, it doesn’t have to be this way.

There are those wise words that say: “Out of the darkness there comes the light”. Despite all that is happening, it’s still a beautiful world. Be comforted in the knowledge that there are more good people with good hearts and intentions than there are bad.

Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) is full of such people. Men regularly gather at the Shed, not only to enjoy shed-like activities, but also to interact with each other in peace and fellowship. SAMS is a safe and friendly place where all are treated with respect and equality. It is a place where the men stand shoulder to shoulder to support each other when times are tough and celebrate together when obstacles are overcome.

SAMS men may not have all the answers to the worries of the world, but at least in the Shed you can put aside those worries and enjoy the fellowship of other men.

YOU CAN’T KEEP GREAT COOKS AWAY Samford Mini-Cookery Show Competition On Saturday 9th July, the Samford Show had a mini-Cookery competition held at the SCHUB. It was great to see competitors staying to listen to the Judge as she cut and tasted every entry. It was a great insight into how it all works and competitors got some great hints on Show cooking.

FLORISTRY WITH NATIVE PLANTS At our July meeting, several attendees brought specimens of native plants and weeds for our show and tell, which got us off to a great start. This was followed by a presentation by Peter Storer on rare and unusual native plants not commonly available from commercial nurseries (including specialised native nurseries).

These included: Skeleton Fork Fern (a very primitive plant, which is not technically a fern but a charophyte dating from the Silurian era); the very dainty, but hardy, Sweet Jasmine; Narrow-leaved Muttonwood, a small shrub from wet sclerophyll forest; Dwarf Plum Pine from the wallum; Fernleaved Tamarind, a small tree from the Atherton tableland; and Flintwood, which is a wonderful local shade tree and host for

the Australian Rustic butterfly.

Our next meeting, to be held on Tuesday 2 August in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start, will include a presentation by Branch member Denise Turnbull who will tell us which Australian native plants are used in floristry, with a demonstration on how to create a native arrangement. Denise is another ‘hidden talent’ we discovered within the group (rather like Roman Buzianczuk and his amazing photography). She trained as a florist at Grovely TAFE and ran her own florist shop at Wellers Hill on the southside for several years. Come along to learn how our wonderful native flora can be used to make stunning flower arrangements.

We encourage attendees to bring along native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments, socialise and draw the plant raffle.

Life at Cedar Creek Public Hall A winter rest pause from major community events is in process for the Hall, while the Management Committee reviews its practices, ‘to do’ list and puts action into grant raising, amongst other items, to continue the Halls rejuvenation progress. As a foundation to this, committee members met with Cr Darren Grimwade and MP Nikki Boyd in June as a ‘meet and greet’ and to explore the kinds of support that might be available. The meeting was informative and encouraging, as well as being much appreciated, and it is good to know that the Hall does not stand alone, despite being a community hall.

The next major events on the calendar later this year will be a children’s celebration of Halloween at the October TGIF, and a Twilight Market in November where we will be encouraging stalls selling handcrafted or recycled items, with materials sourced locally, but certainly in Australia. This market will help start the festive season and will also feature performing arts entertainment for all.

Followers of the Hall, be reassured yes, the end-of-month TGIF Family BBQ continues. The next date is Friday, 29th July complete with sausage sizzle and hamburgers from the BBQ. We continue to develop the vegetarian/vegan menu, listening to your suggestions! OUT & ABOUT Samford Museum PICNICS AND DAY TRIPS Dedicated picnic train excursions to various destinations in our region are well documented.

RACQ road patrol supported RACQ member day-trippers on designated RACQ suggested routes on dedicated days, such as the one promoted in the Sunday Mail on 7th Sept 1930.

A variety of scenery through the countryside which was looking at its best was promised as well as picturesque creek crossings where beautiful crystal-clear water was available for boiling the billy.

Panoramic views were promoted from Clear Mountain and other vantage points along the roads. Motorists who made the trip would appreciate getting out into the fresh country air. The round trip was approximately 60 miles (96.5 kms) and the districts to be passed through were well signposted.

The patrol was to leave the Brisbane GPO at 9.30am, travel via Kedron Bridge, via Happy Valley (now Stafford) Road and Bunya Road, over Drapers Crossing and Eatons Crossing to Clear Mountain. He, the patrol, would then make a circle taking in Mt Samson, Cedar Creek, Yugar and Eatons Crossing, to Clear Mountain. The patrol would then proceed via Kobble Creek to Dayboro and return over the same route to Mt Samson.

Much has changed over the years along the patrolled route. Roads are sealed and river crossings bridged. Primary production has been replaced by rural residential living with locals making their daily commute to work along the roads. Petrol prices? Do we really want to know?

On weekends, day-trippers continue to flock to the region to cafes, coffee shops and bakeries for refreshments rather than boiling the billy.

The roads are so much busier now, yet very few designated vantage points are available for visitors to take in magnificent views around the valley and the mountains.

Visit Samford Museum Sunday or Wednesday 10am-4pm to learn more of Samford’s history which has been collected and preserved by volunteer members since 1986. Admission $5 Adults and $1 for school age children.

Many thanks to all those lovely people who came and supported the Library outside Drakes Samford during the school holidays, as we fundraise towards a new building. Following a week’s hiatus after another round of rain, the last two days of fundraising at the end of the school holidays were a tremendous success.

BIG NEWS! Two 40’ High Cube containers have been purchased and refurbished. Painted offwhite, the containers each have 2.6 metre side opening doors for ease of access.

Mainly thanks to ABC Containers for giving the Library such a generous discount and holding the containers in storage for free. The containers have the capacity to hold the entire Main Collection of books, affectionately known as the Keepers.

Being a caregiver is hard. Rarely are caregivers trained to handle the physical, social, emotional and legal needs of the person they are caring for. Every case is different. Being the carer of a stroke victim is very different to being the carer of a Dementia sufferer, or a paraplegic. Support systems and groups exist, but when you are in the caregiver situation it can be daunting to find them.

Fabulous work also to our SGVPC members who attended both the Dressage and Combined Training (CT) State Championship competition at Maryborough Show Grounds in the June/ July school holidays. Charlotte, Chloe and Frankie represented the Club and Zone and did exceptionally well in their chosen disciplines. Chloe and Frankie both placed within top 10 in their age group in CT and Charlotte also achieved some great results in both the CT and Dressage.

OPEN STUDIOS AMAZE ON THE ARTS TRAIL It was a busy month for our members with the opening night for the Open Studios and Arts Trail held on 27 May followed by the very successful Open Studio weekends in June.

The artists were supported by visitors and locals with tremendous response reported.

Sales were up nearly 20% on last year. Over 900 items were sold and Creative Samford members had wide public exposure.

We are heading into the second half of this year with exciting projects in the pipeline.

This includes the potential of a 5-panel mural commission as well as the Creative Samford Fair planned for November.

Quite a few new member applications were received and new members are always welcome to join. A wide range of artistic endeavours are supported with workshops and informal co-operative projects.

We all make the same mistake: We decide to improve our health and fitness. So we start running, swimming, or cycling. We clock up the hours, build the intensity and we make some gains. But six to eight weeks later we’re injured. This cycle of getting fitter and break down is terrible, not only for our bodies, but for our mental health too.

To prevent this, we need a little bit of physiological knowledge. Our cardiovascular system adapts quickly (measured in days or weeks) BUT our bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles adapt a lot slower (think: weeks, months and years).

What does this mean in real life?

We’ll be able to run, cycle or swim further with each session (due to our quick adapting cardiovascular system) but our bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles can break down and become injured (due to their slower adaptation rate).

So how do you prevent this?

Build your strength first. Then build your fitness. Another way of saying “build your strength first” is “prepare your body first”.

Prepare your body for the thousands of rotations your should joint will do in your swims. Prepare your body for the high forces you’ll generate in your running. Prepare your body for the long time you’ll spend in the saddle. Prepare your body with strength training first. Then build your fitness. And break the “get fitter/break down” cycle.

BOOK REVIEWS INSIDE THE O’BRIENS Lisa Genova Lisa Genova is a neuroscientist with an interest in the impact of neurological conditions, author of Still Alice.

Inside the O’Briens is one of the most harrowing and soul-wrenching books I have ever read; but it has given me insight and compassion for those living with Huntington’s Disease. It is not just about an awful disease and the strain on an undeserving family with a catastrophic future, it is also about hope, perseverance and determination to make the most out of life; to hold onto positivity when the mat of security and comfort is ripped from underneath you.

When well-respected Boston Police Officer, Joe O’Brien begins to experience “strange” symptoms (the on-set of Huntington’s) he tries to cover up these obscure intrusions in his life to protect his family and to maintain his dignity and his profession. At first, Joe is not convinced

there is anything to be concerned about as he believes his symptoms are a normal response to many hard hours on “the job”.

It takes pressure from his wife, Rosie before Joe starts investigating.

The story’s themes include a Christian family trying to come to terms with an uncertain future and their unwavering faith; and how knowing our genetic history can influence or not influence major life decisions. For example, Joe’s daughter Katie is a yoga teacher whose boyfriend wants her to move to another country and begin a life with him. She is reluctant to go as she fears what her future may hold for her and her family.

I enjoyed reading this book even though it brought tears to my eyes in many places.

The openness and insight I received from the characters gave me a deeper appreciation for life itself despite its struggles.

Bell crafted a new genre: apocalyptic magical realism…yes there is a dying whale who talks and an enigmatic bear thrown in but don’t let that put you off.

The book tackles weighty issues that on their own could overwhelm the reader, how palpable, heartrending grief can exist unspoken, how shades of coercive love can exist not only between lovers but also between sisters, how love and sacrifice are bedfellows, how to deal with the unreality of reality. At the end of the world things are not as they seem because of deceit and protective self-delusion, so the only way forward is through truth. I loved and hated this book, it left me reeling but I will read it again.

LOCAL HISTORY OF DAYBORO 1956 – FIRST DAYBORO SHOW

Despite the rain, this year’s show went ahead over the first weekend in July. Fantastic to see it back!

The Dayboro War Memorial grounds were officially opened on 8th October 1955. A show ring, refreshment area, bar and toilets had been constructed. To pay for the land, a Show Committee was formed with Norm Kelly, President, Eric Brander, Secretary and Charles Kennedy, Treasurer.

The first Show was held on 13th October 1956, with more than 1000 people attending.

It was such a success that the second Show was extended to a two day event. By the Silver Jubilee Show in 1980, the annual event had grown to a three day Show. It is now a two day show in July each year.

In this photo (top right) Augie Draft is sitting on the rustic seating. The tent at the rear was where Ram Chandra, the “taipan man” had his display. The refreshment area sold takeaway food on the right, the dining room was through the door in the middle and soft drinks and ice-creams were sold on the left. The Ambulance had their chocolate wheel to the left of that.
